And here he was at the very beginning. John Patrick Stewart Jr.  Cutest little baby in the world.  I love his outfit! Such a sturdy little sitter!

See those itchy fingers? He can’t wait to get out of that contraption and into the garage where all the good stuff is kept!  I can just imagine how blue those eyes were.

These photos are from a page in my dad’s baby book, and that’s his dad’s handwriting at the top where it says, “Our darling baby.”

That’s Blog Daddy in Hawaii during the war . . . bottom row, second in from right side.  Looking like Frank Sinatra.  It’s still two years before he meets my mom. And I don’t get introduced to him until a couple of years after that.

Happy Birthday to Mr. Stewart! Whatever you’re doing Jack, keep it up
because it seems to be working – 92 wonderful years with those you love
is a blessing. Susan, really now, another project! I can just see everyone
coloring in your pictures with a new set of crayons. If you do it, please
include England, Beatrix, The Vinyard and your kitchen, dishes, Holidays and
    and and …………….

  2. Ginger says:

Happy birthday Blog Daddy! Your daughter is such a gift, bringing love and inspiration to so many…but then you already know that! Hope you have a wonderful day celebrating you.

  3. Cindy says:

Your daughter has thrown a net around all of our hearts and drawn us into her life. It’s been so lovely to explore it and to get to know her favorites (Blog Daddy being right at the top of the list!). However, when I began to read this posting, my jaw dropped down to the table……MY father was born on August 5, 1923 too!!!! Just one more little detail to knit us all together. Bravo to you and her mother. You raised a family with “all the right stuff”. I know nobody’s perfect and we rarely do anything perfectly, but you did a fine job of instilling compassion, joy, a good work ethic and just plain FUN into this one daughter of yours that I’ve come to know (in a little way) through all of her life-sharing anecdotes. I hope that you sat back yesterday and took a trip down memory lane of the blessings that have been bestowed upon you and the blessing that you have been to so many people. Happy Birthday!

  4. Barbara Stillman says:

    HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!! Mr. Stewart!! xoxo

When people say this was the greatest generation, I believe it 100%. My dad lived to be 92 years old too. They are strong , wonderful , respectful and generally very nice people. They live thru depression and war , which would make you think they wouldn’t be that way. Happy birthday Mr. Stewart .

  6. Terri says:

Happy, happy birthday, Mr. Stewart! Love the photos. Hope your dad has a wonderful 92nd birthday!

Happy birthday dear Blog Dad. I’ve said a birthday prayer
for you. You are aging much better than Mr. S. did! I
especially love when you tell about how you built things
for your house and for the amusement of your family. Wish
I had a totem pole. WOW! Julia in SC

You mean a lot to those of us who Dads are no longer with us–indeed a most upstanding generation of men and women with the courage and character to see your families and our nation through some very difficult times. Live well and prosper–Marty

  16. Sharon H says:

Happy birthday Blog Daddy!!! 92 years young – congratulations and I hope you had a wonderful day! The baby pictures are just wonderful Susan, and it’s so great that you have your Dad’s baby book. It’s something very precious to have and I’m sure it means so much to you. My mother was a German war bride after WWII and I still have her little black suitcase she carried with her on her trip to America, and some of her family pictures she brought with her. They mean the world to me. A big birthday hug to Blog Daddy from Sharon in Florida.

  17. Karen Lotito says:

A very Happy Birthday to you dad, Susan! 92 years young-God bless! Your post was a lovely tribute to a very special man in your life. I hope he had a wonderful day!

  18. Lois Rehm says:

    Dear Susan,

I second all of warm and hearty remarks from your blog sisters (and a brother or two) and add my belated felicitations to your dear father. May he thrive in the year ahead and be buoyed up from all the good wishes and love sent his way.

Every time I check your blog, I’m reminded of the old song:

I love those dear hearts . . . an’ gentle people,
Who live in my home town,
Because those dear hearts . . . an’ gentle people,
Will never, ever, let you down!

Your blog is a “home town” for many of us where we are in touch with the dear hearts and gentleness that were more prevalent in earlier decades. Your dad and mom and you are reflections of those times, as are all the gentle folks who
visit your blog. Every time I check in, I am reassured that folks still exist who care about others and remain optimistic despite life’s challenges.

With love and appreciation for all you do to spread love and gentleness.

    Lois from Westchester

    • sbranch says:

Thank you Lois, always love hearing from you. xoxo

      • Vicki says:

Sometimes/usually(!), I go back over your comments here, days later, Susan; I just love hearing what others have to say! This one was so poignant for me. Lois hit the nail on the head; your products, art and blog are so comforting. ‘Your blog is a “home town” for many of us where we are in touch with the dear hearts and gentleness that were more prevalent in earlier decades. Your dad and mom and you are reflections of those times.’ So, so true, Lois! Love and gentleness; we all need more of it in this world! I loved reading this; love peeking in!

  19. Laurel in VA says:

Happy Birthday to a great man!

  20. Sue says:

The happiest of birthdays to Blog Daddy! When it comes to “musica,” I immediately thought of the song, “You Must Have Been a Beautiful Baby,” because you certainly were! Those baby pix are absolutely priceless. I hope this is just the latest in a string of many more happy days and, that in eight short years, we’ll all be helping you celebrate the Century Mark.

Thanks, Susan, for sharing this lovely man with us…especially with all of us who have already had to part with our own wonderful dads from the Greatest Generation.

  21. Marsha MacLean says:

  22. Back from a week at Chautauqua and checking blogs right away! Happy Birthday to John Patrick Stewart, Jr. ! Wishing you every blessing!

  23. sondra fox says:

WOW, “I” even remember how to type into your site Susan! Just kidding you. Keep on with your book, dear girl.

Summer is going along well, here on the west coast. Lovely, mild day here today. We’ve only had a couple of really hot spells.

My cat, Sheba, & dog, Max, are babysitting for our daughter’s fourteen year old Chocolate Lab, while my daughter & son-in-law are in Tahoe. The Lab’s name is Presley, named after you know who. We all loved Elvis, still do. Presley is a dear, sweet dog & I’m so happy to have him with us. I try to spoil him some, even more so than my daughter, son-in-law, & grand boys do. This is his second home, so he isn’t missing his regular mates that much, I don’t think.

Happy Belated Birthday “Susan’s Dad” aka Blog Daddy!! Hope you had a wonderful birthday. My Dad’s birthday was the 4th…..and he turned 87. I told Susan and the girlfriends of his stroke on Easter Sunday. Well, he’s doing better each and every day. Even walked on his own inbetween the parallel bars at rehab the other day. And, he’s learning new words to let me know just what he’s thinking…..which I can’t wait to hear more of! Your generation of Dad’s are awsome and you never quit or let us daughters down. 🙂 We love you to pieces. Thank you, for your wonderful daughter Susan, who gives us beautiful and wonderful things in her books and pictures and just her ability to make us smile.
    Again, Happy Birthday!!
    Cheers from Northern CA

What joy has spread far and wide! Good job, you.
Enjoy every minute of your special day.

    Hi Susan,

My Mom was born the week before your Dad and I have a picture of Mom at about the same age of your Dad’s beautiful baby picture and it looks like they are wearing very similar outfits. My first thought was “that looks like Mom’s baby picture” which I just adore. They look like twins!

    Hi Jack & Sue,
What lovely pictures. Of course, I picked Jack out right away in the Navy picture. Cute baby boy, too! Wow, my dad would have been 92 this year also.
It’s hard to imagine he’s been gone 20 years now. I remember listening to country music when we stuffed newspapers as kids. I don’t think you ever did that with us. We all miss the good old days of family vacations and fun!
We love all of your family! Hugs to Jack from me.

    • sbranch says:

Hi Chris! So nice to hear from you. And yes, your dad, it’s hard to believe, 20 years. I do think of him often, and Take Me Out to the Ballgame. I loved your dad. He and your mom bonded our families for life. I think of you and all the Powers as brothers and sisters! We stuffed newspapers with our dad too . . . and sang “In the jungle, the mighty jungle the lion sleeps tonight . . .” I will tell my dad you said hello, he’ll like that! Hope to see you one of these days!
