Who is Susan Branch

usan Branch is the self-taught artist and New York Times best-selling author of the fourteen  best-selling “Heart of the Home” lifestyle BOOKS all published by Little Brown and Company. Plus another four books, including her autobiographical trilogy published by her own Spring Street Publishing. From her studio overlooking her picket-fence garden in Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts, Susan writes and paints about the “home arts” of cooking, gardening, sewing, family, best friends, entertaining and the little things that make life sweet. Her books are “homemade” as in, watercolored and completely hand-written. She has a monthly newsletter she’s been sending out beginning in 1995, called WILLARD, named after her grandfather. Today, mostly because of word of mouth, Willard goes to 82,000+ (mostly) women, kindred spirits and sisters of the heart, all over the world, who’ve signed up to receive it. These are “the Girlfriends,” as Susan calls them…she walks through the studio and says “What do we have for the girlfriends today?” and we know who she’s talking about. Through LICENSING, her artwork has been used to design many products. Besides her yearly wall calendars, Susan’s art has decorated lots of stationery things, from shelf paper to greeting cards; she’s designed pajamas, teapots, hooked rugs, scrapbooks and stickers, and quilting fabrics. Her web site has been up and running for twenty-three years; and it now includes her BLOG. See FAQ for more information on Susan’s products, or SHOPPING to see what what’s new from the studio today.

Everything about your blog is so homey!

    • Thea ebert says:

Hi Susan! I start each morning reading your blog, and it always reminds me of Louis Armstrong’s “What a Wonderful World”. Thank you for letting us in to your beautiful world. Hope your new book will be out soon. Did you make your patchwork ironing board cover?

Thanks again for all the beauty.

      • sbranch says:

I didn’t make it; it was a gift, and sadly, the lady who made it has passed away. I just love it. I looked at it closely, it seems so easy to make, if you have an old quilt you can bear to cut up.

    • sbranch says:

I love doing it, so glad you’re here!

  2. Janis says:

I love everything about your site, your lovely drawings and your sweet musings, but Willard most of all : ) God bless You Susan

  3. Your work is absolutely amazing, loved it all.
I never considered myself an artist, until I read the above saying,
If you do it with heart thats art! thank you for that, it made my day
    Evelyn.

  4. Barbara Thomas says:

I am a long time fan and have always been curious about your last name. Is Stewart your maiden name? Since Joe is Hall, who is Branch? And did Branch have a connection to the street in Arroyo Grande? I so miss your little shop there! I think all of us fans wish we were you a little bit every time we pull out a beautiful recipe book of yours and envy, yes that’s right, I said envy, (down in the dirt, green with jealousy) your dual coast lifestyle!
    Kind regards, Barbara : )

    • sbranch says:

Yes, Stewart is maiden name. Branch was other married name. Not Branches of Arroyo Grande; though I’ve met them; Branches of San Luis Obispo. Dual coasts is wonderful; but being in love with two places so far apart has its drawbacks! You don’t find these things out until it’s too late; you’re already in love.

      • Carolyn Esposito says:

I know the feeling so well! We have a home near the ocean in San Diego and also a home in Ranchita in the back country of San Diego. Notice that I call each of them my “home” because we love each of them dearly and have decided in our retirement years to live in both. We are so very lucky to be able to enjoy time near the ocean and then within a few hours arrive in the mountains with snow all around…

  5. Amy says:

I am LOVING your updated site. I have spent time every day exploring and finding new things each time. Thank You!! You are such an inspiration of enjoying the most important things in life. God Bless!!

WORDS CAN’T DESCRIBE THE NEW LOOK. THE RECIPES ALONE ARE INCREDIBLE!, (ALTHOUGH I HAVE EVERY COOK BOOK) I CAN’T WAIT TO GO ON AN OLE FASHIONED PICNIC. MY HUSBAND AND I GOT A LOVELY PICNIC BASKET AS A WEDDING GIFT, 21 YEARS AGO! THE PICTURES OF THE VINEYARD ARE BEAUTIFUL; THEY BRING BACK SO MANY MEMORIES OF MY CHILDHOOD SUMMERS ON CAPE COD. THANK YOU, THANK YOU SUSAN. HAVE A WONDERFUL AND SAFE SUMMER.

I love the little pot that you use for water. Can you tell me who made it? I admire people that had the for-sight to buy things when they were young…. Even buying furniture! (Who does that?) We were busy going to the Saturday matinee and playing cowboys and indians. Oh well…….

    • sbranch says:

I got it at Disneyland. It doesn’t have anything written on the bottom. I don’t even know why I bought it, must have been the red flowers and the bird.

  8. nikki says:

Thanks so much for provding comfort on a lonely day, laughter on the sunniest of days and a smile always. Your website and now your Blog is a warm and welcoming place, your words greet each of us with warmth and the hominess that in this busy world, we too often, do not have a chance to enjoy.
Following your adventures…….especially those on Martha’s Vineyard have given me so many happy moments. Especially since traveling to Martha’s Vineyard and also to Nantucket is definately on my “Bucket List”.
Susan, you touch peoples lives in so many ways that make such a difference. Thank you for touching the heart of my home!

You certainly can capture the heart and soul of Martha’s Vineyard! I just love your photographs of the Island, both night and day, and I can almost smell the ocean air as I view them. I am looking forward to your next post as I can’t get to the Island this year. 🙂

  17. Ruth says:

    Susan,
I feel as though I could crawl into your website and live there happily ever after.

I was fortunate enough to have met you at your Arroyo Grande store some years ago. The store was closed for the day as you and your staff were re-stocking and putting things away. My friend and I were peering into the windows, sad that we wouldn’t see the shop, as we were leaving for home later that day. You saw us, opened the door to explain about the store being closed for the day. When we told you we were leaving for home and couldn’t come back the next day, you graciously invited in to browse. What a kind jesture. I’ll remember that all of my life. Thanks for being human and kind and fun!
    Ruth

    • sbranch says:

I think I remember! I just know how I feel when a store I want to see is closed . . . so glad I was there to open that door!

  18. When I saw the name of your newsletter it caused me to smile.

I had an aunt who we all called Aunt Willard. For all of my life I never understood why we called her that because her name was Margie. She became one of my best friends in my 30’s but I never questioned her on why we called her Aunt Willard. I wish I had now that she has been taken from us much too early.

I must check out your books! You are new to me and thanks to Madame Samm, I now have a new friend!!

  19. Tammy says:

Some people find it quite amusin–
my addiction to a Branch named Susan.
It started off with several books
full of treasure for good cooks,
and snowballed on to other loot
all of which I find quite cute.
Cards, and stickers, and jammies too
and a teapot to name a few,
of the must-haves on my list-
I’m sure by now you get the gist!
I’m not a girl who’s prone to boast
but this one thing I cherish most-
a birthday greeting in Susan’s writing
don’t you find that quite exciting!
I really see no hope for me,
    I’ll always be a Branch junkie 🙂

  20. Eileen Ciccone says:

I’ve been on vacation for the past week, and away from a computer.

I’m sorry to see “Books I Love” and “My Sewing Room” missing. Those are/were two of my stops, along the way…

    • sbranch says:

Ooops, just a glitch…we put new things up yesterday, and in the process, something seems to have gone awry. Will fix asap. Thank you for telling me, I didn’t notice!

  21. Linda Fowler says:

You are SOOO inspiring to me. LOVE, LOVE “Willard”. Thanks for being YOU.

    • sbranch says:

Thanks for being YOU too! xo Working on a new Willard right this minute! Saying, what does everybody want to hear about?

  22. sylvie says:

j’adore votre blog, peux – t – on trouver vos livres en français ? mon anglais n’est pas assez bon ! thank you very much ! à bientôt Sylvie

    • sbranch says:

Susan
NO, I don’t speak French….Google translate did all this…Sylvie asked if she can find my books in French and I “told her” that I don’t speak French and my books are handwritten, so, no. Don’t want to leave anyone out!

  23. nikki says:

Help! I really want so badly a copy of “Where Women Create…August 2011”!!
I tried to buy it on your website and was told they had no more copies!!! Oh, groan!
Where can I find one??? Don’t know if I can live without it!!! I do so love everything you do and have all of your books (I think) and will check to make sure.
I have bought Where Women Create before and love it!
I hope you can help. Many many hugs to you. You are a ray of sunshine in a difficult world. Love & hugs to you.

  25. Rachel says:

Hello from Dallas! I’ve been in love with your work since I was little and I’d trowel through all your books that my mom has. (I actually submitted an application to be a contributing artist for one of your cookbooks when I was in 6th grade!) I’ve always loved to write and draw and I really identified with your sense of design and creativity. Now that I’m out of college and trying to get a foothold (25 next month!), I wanted to thank you for being an inspiration. I’m hopeful that one day I’ll be able to make a career out of the things I love- cooking, entertaining, family, friends, drawing and writing- and reading your books and blog helps me think that it’ll happen!

I’m sure you’re incredibly busy, but I’ve been shamelessly reaching out to authors, artitsts and designers for any pointers they might have to make a creative dream come true!! I’m looking forward to your new books, and hopefully it’ll cool off soon!!

    Best,

    Rachel

    • sbranch says:

I thought I might write a little about that sometime in the future, if people would like to hear it, making dreams come true . . . I can’t believe you wrote me when you were in the 6th grade. I wrote the Queen of England when I was that age! We didn’t have as many “real” people to write in those days! Love you coming by Rachel!

  26. Lynn says:

Is your California store still open or has it been closed? It was on my short list of vacation destinations!

  29. Sandy Yarber Dixon says:

Great to find your website. I hope you did not have too much damage from Irene. Do you have a brochure? The items you have sound very good to me.

  30. Robin Billings says:

I’ve been checking in with you on your blog and train trip across America. Thank you for sharing yourself with us! Just knowing a more personal side of you makes me admire your work that much more (I already adored your artwork of cats and birds, my personal favorites)! I even shared your pictures from the train with my 17-year-old son because he is a train lover. Thank you again!

  31. Debra Suits says:

My Mom passed away this July at age 90. I taught her to quilt in 1976 and we enjoyed many hours of creating beautiful quilts together. She had taught me to sew in junior high school.

I am reproducing a quilt she had begun, an elongated star pattern. This is like working a puzzle in fabric. Mom loved puzzles; me, not so much. This is a challenge quilt for me but I am doing it in my mother’s honor.

This past year my husband, daughter and I visited London. My favorite thing was visiting the film locations of Midsomer Murder Mysteries, a TV show from England. We were escorted to the sites by a wonderful couple from Hemmel Hempstead. I have fallen in love with all things English. I have a collection of English cottages, many of which are teapots, which I started many years ago and it has evolved. We visited teashops (including Harrod’s) while in England and have found many lovely ones here in the states.

I thank you for sharing with us all your wonderful information and pictutres concerning England. I, too, feel we have many beautiful places here in the U.S. and have enjoyed learning about my own country and visiting some really great places. Plane rides are a perfect place to work on hand sewing of quilt projects!

  32. Susan Mixon says:

From one Susan to another…Hello and happy Saturday! Thanks to my friend and sister-in-law, you are one of my mostest favorite people. She introduced you and your site to me and I am beside myself with all your beautiful pictures, postings, how-to’s, reminiscings (I love especially the one about your daddy…about Daddy’s hands…up until my daddy passed away at 97, he and I still held hands (I will always be a daddy’s girl) Susan, keep up the wonderful work you do…you put so much cheer into so many lives and are truly an inspiration to me…thank you 🙂

  33. Amy Allen says:

I bought 2 of your recipe books “To My Daughter With Love from my Kitchen” for Christmas. The only problem is I need one for my son. Do you have a recipe book for sons?

    • sbranch says:

I’ve tried to interest this manufacturer in doing one (it’s up to them as I only allow them use of my artwork, they get to choose the product), but so far, they don’t seem to be getting it! Lots of people ask for it, but so far, no luck. We do have sort of generic recipe books, that you could dedicate to your son. Sorry I don’t have a better answer for you.

      • Amy Allen says:

Could you suggest a “manly” generic book – my son is 30. Even though he is 30, he would be “hurt” if I didn’t do a recipe book for him (he does like to cook!)

        Thanks for your help!

        • sbranch says:

Manly, not really, but we have kitcheny ones, with plaid covers ….. not really feminine — just kitcheny. Look in our scrapbook section in our webstore and see if anything catches your eye. They are nicely laid out inside.

  34. Karon says:

My oldest daughter, Jacqueline, will be getting married this May, here at our home. We have a small lake in the back yard and plan to float 1000 candles on it, starting with about 400, then letting a few more out at a time, throughout the evening (and probably into the wee hours of the morning!). Any ideas, things you’ve seen, verses you’ve written, etc. that may go along? We’d LOVE it! Also, we are considering have a Branch shower rather than a kitchen shower! 🙂

    • sbranch says:

🙂 That sounds just beautiful!!! The candles! Not thinking really well this morning! Have to let it molt in the brain awhile.

  35. Lynne says:

I adore your books (and this blog). Your recipes are delicious, especially the Lemon Linguini one. Your illustrations are lovely and I love reading your entertaining ideas. I throughly enjoyed reading the story about you meeting the Beatles in Girlfriends Forever. Thank you for writing such great books!

  36. Sally Baker says:

I am also a fan and have enjoyed reading all the warm messages both to and from you. You are so personable! I too love England and lived/loved there for 13 years!
I bought your “Girlfriends” book years ago at a garage sale and it remains a favorite. I used to do the scrapbook for my quilt guild and I always seemed to gravitate to your paper for its pages.
I just bought your 2012 calendar for my long time friend in England (we exchange them each year and have since 1990) and noticed your photograph on the back. You look so familiar and I am wondering if you attended Ringling School of Art in Sarasota, Florida back in the 60’s. My last name was Lord then and I was good friends with Barbara Linsley, if that name rings a bell.
Thanks for doin’ what you do!

    • sbranch says:

No, I’m California born and raised, moved to Martha’s Vineyard in the 80’s and never went to art school! But I loved hearing you lived in England for 13 years; that must have been wonderful! Say hello to your friend for me . . . thanks for writing!

  37. Maria Laura says:

Hola!! Mi nombre es Maria Laura, vivo en Buenos Aires, Argentina.
Me gustaria saber si aqui puedo comprar tus libros y tus productos, se tenés alguna distribuidora que los venda aqui.
    Muchas gracias!!!
    Un beso
    Maria Laura

    • sbranch says:

Google Translate says Maria Laura is saying this:

Hello! My name is Maria Laura, I live in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
Here I would like to know if I can buy your books and your products, you have a distributor that sells them here.
      Thank you very much!
      a kiss
      Maria Laura

Here’s what Google translate helped me say back to her:

Hola Maria, por lo que me alegro de verte aquí! Mis libros no se venden en Argentina, pero se pueden comprar aquí en mi sitio web. Yo no soy tan bueno en español, pero tal vez usted tiene un amigo que habla Inglés, que puede ayudarle a fin, podemos enviar a usted. Muchas gracias por escribir!

And here is what that means:

Hello Maria, so nice to see you here! My books aren’t sold in Argentina, but you can buy them here on my web site. I’m not so good at Spanish, but maybe you have a friend who speaks English who can help you order them; we can send them to you. Thank you so much for writing!

And THIS is only one reason I love Google! 🙂

  38. Ellen Beeton says:

I just recently found you and I have been spending hours enjoying your whole website. This has been such a joy. I signed up for the your newsletter. I think we will be great girlfriends!
    Ellen

  39. Geri says:

    Dear Susan,
I am writing to thank you for your art, blog, humor, and enthusiasm in all things “homey.” I recieved a calender of yours a few years ago from a friend and I absolutely adored it! After getting out of the Navy a while back, losing my father then my mother a few years later, life was challenging. How refreshing it was to “discover” you and your website about the same time. Seeing your art, all of the pictures of your life, particularly of your home and even more your kitchen. I was tickled to see your mixer–just like the one my mother used for years. The counters in your kitchen remind me of time spent with my mother that is long passed. All of the glasses, dishes, quilts, etc. remind me of my mother and grandmother. They had me in the kitchen since I was 8 or 9. However, these are not the main things for which I am writing, but to thank you for all of these reminders that conjure such feelings and memories that dwell in my heart and soul. Sometimes I am so overcome with emotion by a simple picture you’ll post, such as oiling your wooden spoons and cutting boards–just the way they did and as I have for many years now. Being a part of your world is an incredible reminder that everything that is old is new–and most times better. Thank you Susan!!

  40. Kelly says:

I bought a book a few years ago by you titled ” Christmas Memories.” I love it, but we have almost filled it up. I was wondering if the “Christmas Joy” book is anything like this one or if you are still selling the original version?
Thank you so much for all of your great ideas! Our memories have been captured for a lifetime!

    • sbranch says:

Hi Kelly, Christmas Joy is a book about little ways to celebrate Christmas . . . and I’m sorry to tell you Christmas Memories went out of print just a few months ago. I am so happy you have one though — I love the 5 years of memories in one book! Must be darling.

  41. JoAnn says:

    Hi Susan,
I wanted to write and tell you how much I enjoy your blog and your wonderful books. They are more than “books” to me. I open them up and the comfort and warmth jumps out of the pages into my heart! Most days I really, really need that too! Your paintings touch a special part of me that reminds me of being a child and not having a care in the world.
    Thanks and please don’t stop!
    JoAnn

  42. Diane says:

Hi, Susan. Wanted to let you know how much I have enjoyed your work over the years. I’m an art teacher myself and really appreciate your talents. Have many of your books and calendars.
Need your help. I have been using one of your cranberry sauce recipes for years and I can’t find my old trusted calendar of yours! It was from a calendar – I’m guessing from the late 1990s. Had cranberries, apples, lemon zest, and a few other items. My son says “its tradition!” If you could find it in your archives, I’d really appreciate it!
Loved seeing photos of your kittys! Have 2 of my own- Madam Pompidaux and the Mousekateer. Yes, cat people are a little strange.
Have a wonderful Thanksgiving to you and your loved ones and again, any help on your cranberry sauce would be great.
    Diane

    • sbranch says:

It’s in my book Vineyard Seasons . . . do you have that? On page 40.

      • Diane says:

Yes- I have that one and was looking at it. Not the one. Am positive it was in one of your calendars. Sorry to be difficult but don’t want to disappoint my son. 🙂

        • sbranch says:

That’s the only one I have with apple in it. There have been calendars since 1993, do you know which one, I could look, but I know I have 3 cranberry sauce recipes, the new one I put in the latest WILLARD, one in Autumn, and one in Vineyard Seasons. Maybe it was someone else? So sorry!!!

          • Diane says:

The situation is looking a bit bleak. Definately was your calendar- late 1990s- believe had Granny Smith apples. oh, well. Will improvise! Thanks for taking the time to check. Again, Happy Thanksgiving and thanks for all the recipes, inspiration and enjoyment you’ve shared with me and many others over the years

          • sbranch says:

Bleak, so sorry. I checked 98, 99, and 2000, just in case I totally forgot something, but there isn’t anything there, and I didn’t have a calendar in 95, 96, or 97. So sorry! Good luck, probably your improvisation will be better than the original! 🙂

  43. c.k. paz says:

Early a.m. here. The kettle is on; hubby is off to work; still in my cozy clothes, sitting here reading Willard and visiting your blog. The vast ocean of the internet is fabulous as well as frightening; however, I focus on the fabulous and am thankful that you are out there, sharing and caring. Common interests, we are kindred spirits all, strangers though we be. : ) Happy day to each and every one!

  44. Joanie Wendel says:

I wished you lived next door. You would be the perfect neighbor!
Love you articles-books-recipes & etc. Our family is also “kitty lovers” so
it was so interesting to hear about Jack. He looks a lot like our Kennedy.
A home is not complete without a cat! Thank you for sharing.
Blessed Thanksgiving to you & your family.

  45. Roseann Davis-Yurasits says:

    Dearest Susan,

Words can not begin to express the simple joy I experience when I read your ramblings to all your girlfriends, thank you. I wanted to suggest that you write a book about Jack and Girl Kitty. Then when you find yourself playing with Jack or Girl Kitty it can all be for the new book. Playtime with Jack would then be interviewing the star of the book, Girl Kitty would be the insider who knew him from the moment he entered “HER” world! I can see it already & how better to introduce a new generation to the beauty of your world? It warmed my heart to know that Jack found his way to you thru a shelter, such an important lesson to be taught to the young. I am sure you have recipes for yummy kitty treats and toys to catch their fancy. You do need another project, right? Baskets Full of Blessings to share with everyone, Roseann

    • sbranch says:

What a sweet idea, I was picturing the whole thing in my eye!

      • Roseann Davis-Yurasits says:

First the vision, then the creation! Should I look for the chronicles of Jack sometime in spring; just in time for filling an Easter Basket or two? Will the forward be purred in (or should I say hissed) by Girl Kitty? It is sure to be a FOUR paw success! Just the thing to get the tails twitching with excitement! Happy painting!
        Roseann

        • sbranch says:

What I need is a clone for all the wonderful exciting projects I think about!!! Life is good! My dad wants the kitty book too!

  46. Roseann Davis-Yurasits says:

    Hi Susan,

A clone for you & an agent for Jack; Christmas shopping should be easy for Joe this year! You have your Dad covered also, all he wants for Christmas is a kitty book that makes him smile! Life is getting better, don’t you think?
    Roseann

Google helped me write her back: Hola Mirta! Así que bueno saber de ti! Feliz Navidad para ti también. No estoy seguro de que Google traduce esto como usted lo dijo, pero definitivamente puedo decir que Gracias! Tenga un día maravilloso!

Which means: Hi Mirta! So nice to hear from you! Merry Christmas to you too. I’m not sure Google translated this just as you said it, but I can definitely tell you Thank you!!! Have a wonderful day!

Isn’t Google translate wonderful? What a world!

  48. Lee Rose says:

Thank you for the hyacinth quote. Yesterday was the first time I visited your site, and this morning I was so surprised to see my father’s favorite quote. He died 4 years ago this month so to see the short quote about losing someone made me know he was thinking about me.

  49. Kim Anderson says:

    Hi Susan,

My first time on your site and it is beautiful. I am a moon child (7/7) and I loved the pictures of the moon and the music which accompanied it; it touched my heart. I turned 70 in July and the theme was “Bella Luna.” You have a new reader and friend. Carol (Norhtridge CA)

    Susan.

There is so much in my heart that I would like to tell you, it seems like you heard it all. When I read your Willard, it beings me up to a high level of happiness. 53. Susan says:

I have always loved your art work and your books. Several years ago I decided I was going to redo our wedding photos in one of your scrapbook albums. Well I bought all of the things I needed or so I thought! I opened the box with the album in it the other day. I only had 6 sheets of paper. I sent out a “cry” by way of TX to my girlfriends. One of them replyed…..I have 26 sheets of Susan Branch papers. She said they are yours, use what you want. Girlfriends they help you when they can. She was quick to remind me ” I told you in 2003 when this paper came out that you better get more”. Sometimes girlfriends are not so kind. 🙁

  54. Lisa R says:

    Susan,
Just went to the post office, and there was my new Susan Branch Blotter Calendar! I tried not to speed up my country dirt road, but could hardly wait to get home and open it! Oh my joy!! It is beautiful in every way. Love the note section so much, and the darling drawings on those fun birthdays that are never on any other calendars but yours. I have your beautiful wall calendar too, but this one takes center stage on my craft table. It will keep me on track, give me daily reminders, and bring smiles to my day just enjoying it. Really, really, really Love it! Thank you so much Susan! You are a dream girlfriend.♥

  58. Lori Ann says:

    Dear Susan,

I have been reading your books and ‘stalking’:) your website and blog for many years now. I feel like we are best friends and I don’t even know you. I’m not sure you realize how you you make us feel ‘at home’ whenever we visit you in your books or on your blog. I have learned so much from you, from gardening to cooking to traditions to friendship. Thank you for sharing your wonderful life with us. You are such an inspiration to us on how to enjoy the simple things in life. You are a true ‘soulsister’ to all of us who follow you. I will forever be grateful for all the wonderful ideas and recipes and the warm fuzzy feelings I get from your books and blog. I hope all the blessings you have given to us are returned to you tenfold.

  59. Cyndy Szarzynski says:

    Hi Susan,

I have been enjoying your blog, Willard, website, books…you are one of those wonderful people who seem to connect to just about everyone, including me.

Will you be attending the 2012 Friends of Gladys Taber Reunion this June 15-17, 2012 in Eastham?

It would be an honor and a pleasure to meet you….if only for a moment.

    Cyndy

  60. Carla Henn says:

Susan; I too love Glady’s Taber, I am collecting her books. I have tried SEVERAL times to join the fan club so I can receive the newsleter, BUT it never seems to go through because I don’t hear back from them. Do you have/ or others who are members have an address or POBox so that I can join the fan club?

    Thanks for you help.

    • sbranch says:

I forwarded your comment to the FOGT; someone should contact you and get you signed up! Let me know if this doesn’t do it!

  61. Carla Henn says:

Thank you thank you thank you!!!!!

  62. Phyllis says:

I just turned 60 this past January. The really weird thing is that even though I saw all of your old pictures and stories and events that seemed contemporaneous with my childhood, I somehow thought you were much younger than I. Maybe it’s that happy gene thing you have going, but you have such a youthful spirit. I’m learning, I’m learning…

    • sbranch says:

🙂 If I don’t look in the mirror, I’m 24! But then if I was 24 I would have no picket fence garden, I wouldn’t know how to paint, and I would never have been to England. It takes some years to get the good stuff! xoxo

  63. Many years ago, a friend gave my a Susan Branch cookbook that I treasure. All these years later, I discovered your blog. The more I read your posts, the more I feel like I have known you at sometime in the past. Thank you for today’s post…to a place that I have a connection to…Hingham, Mass. What a great walk down a New England Main Street!
    xoxo

  64. Jill says:

    Dear Susan,

I love when your newsletter comes! I always check new things and your Vintage Finds. I was thrilled to see that you had a copy of ” A Guide to Garden Flowers”. I have the exact same book. My dad had it with his garden books ( he is (90 yrs. now) It is such a pretty book. Tiny as it is, it has such beautiful drawings of flowers and anyone that gardens would be drawn to it. I love it and especially because my dad had a copy and gave it to me.

  65. Julie Thompson says:

Hi Susan,Oops, I left you a message in the Willard section. Maybe you could have someone put it here.So sorry! JulieB.T.

  66. Kim says:

Hi Susan. I just have to tell you that I look at your website during lunch every day at work (yes, I do not leave my desk, though I know I should, for sanity sake if nothing else). It brings me back “home”, to all the things in life that truly matter. You remind me that you should stop and enjoy the “little things” in life whenever possible. You are such a blessing. Thank you so much for being you. You add warmth in my heart and a smile to my face. My kindest regards, Kim

  67. Cathe Ekas says:

Susan, I have been making a “Susan Branch” scrapbook for a long time. I put the cute quotes and other things from your blog in it. I have old stickers and papers. I just ordered the new stamps. This is just for me because I admire you so much and it is also to showcase my creativity and Calligraphy when I record other quotes. (Always giving credit where due). I hope there isn’t a problem with it? Have a wonderful holiday. Cathe

  68. Anne Marie says:

I just purchased your Homemade recipes scrapbook kit. I was wondering where I can purchase refills for it. Sorry I did not know where else to put this.

  69. Barb Parsons says:

Susan: Even though I have had your calendars in years past, I just found your blog and website through a quilting magazine and am enchanted by the drawings and pictures and all the loveliness. Thank you so much for a delightful “trip to England” and tour through your Peter Rabbit room. So many of the things that you show and talk about are the things that I love too. We too have a “cottage” by the sea and are so blessed to live here. I will be back, for sure, and have sent your blog to my niece — I know she will enjoy it too. Bless you! Barb

  70. Joan Hoult says:

    Susan

By some crazy chance you didn’t live in Utica, Michigan as a Kid, did ya? You look like a Susan Travis I now as a kid 5/6 years old.

  71. Christi Crown says:

Susan!!! I’m just piddlin’ on your site and thought I’d tell you how wonderful you are. 🙂 I also had to re-sign up for Willard as I’ve gotten it since when it used to come to me in the mail (I really miss that snail mail, but understand you’ve just got tooo many fans now to do it that way. Even still have a bookmark I use that came with one – oh and I have all those hard copy Willards too!).

Anyway, you’re the best and you should hear that often! Keep it up!

    Christi

  72. Susan,
I just found your blog a couple of days ago, and I am totally hooked already. Been a fan since the 80’s, have your first cookbook, along with several others…..always considered them works of art, and kept them separated from the rest of my cookbook collection. Now, because of health reasons, no longer cooking …. gave my precious books to my eldest granddaughter when she moved into her new home. She is much like me, and admired the artwork as much as the recipes. She is also a talented young woman who paints, and has her own photography business, while being a full-time nurse, and newlywed….(and loves to cook.)

Anyway, I will be at your site every day…with a huge smile on my face, because I can still enjoy your talents, and shop without leaving my home,
which is difficult to do nowdays.

Continued Blessings to you my friend, and thank you for sharing your enormous talents so graciously.

    Warmest regards,
    Barb

  74. Danella Farrell says:

A few years ago I really enj;oyed a website named Wembley Cottage. After awhile I was unable to find it and was so disappointed. Was that website yours? I so enjoy your site and blog. Like going on vacation every time I visit.

  75. sue muehlman says:

You’re blog is like stepping back in time, to a softer, easier, more romantic period
that seems to be disappearing at a rapid pace. Looking at youre pictures, artwork and reading your tales calm me down on a hectic day, and lighten my mood when I tend to feel sad. Thank You.

  76. cheleen says:

if i buy the personalized recipe keeper can i order extra refill pages too?

  77. Leigh says:

Welcome home ol’ girlfriend! Nice to have you back!!

  78. Robyn Genau says:

I would love to have more of your books. Can Ipurchase them directly from you?

  79. Tara says:

I read your blog every day even though i read things over and over. I is very calming and comforting. Your home is sooo sweet! Im trying to replicate as close as possible to the style of your kitchen. Would you post more pictures of your home sweet home!!! I just wanna live there!

  80. HELEN BECKUS says:

    What about Grandma? any pictures?

    • sbranch says:

Hmmm, I should do my grandma! Ny grandma’s the beautiful one in that first picture (in the scrapbook), in the same picture, my mom is wearing a white dress and pregnant with me.

  81. Robyn Genau says:

    Susan,
I was looking at your 2013 calenders online and there were two. One was with flowers and the other was maybe with a kitchen look. What is the difference?

    • sbranch says:

Hmmm. There is a blotter calendar … each month is on one page, and when each month is up, you tear the page off to go to the next month, it’s larger than the 12 x 12, it can lay on top of a desk, but there are also holes in it to hang it on the wall. The 12 x 12 is a regular wall calendar; this one you turn the pages, you don’t tear them off. Hope this helps!

  82. Lisa F says:

Hi, Susan, Just wanted to say hi. I had trouble finding your calendars last year. I waited too long. But this year my daughter found the 2013 calendars early and she gave me two, one for home and one for work. I’m so happy I have them early. It’s also nice that you are giving back to all of us by adding an extra one to orders of two or more calendars.
I have admired you and your work for years, thanks for just being you.
My sister made me a quilted table cloth out of some of your fabric, wish I could show it to you. Take care and enjoy the fall weather, soon it will be winter. It’s almost time for cocoa and homemade marshmallows, which I have made from your recipe. They are so good.
I will be teaching my daughters boyfriend how to make the marshmallows. He can’t believe I have made them before.
Enjoy your evening and hi to Joe.

  83. Hi Susan, so enjoy your daily to weekly photos and thoughts. Love a lot of the same things you like. For instance, vintage linens, everything kitchen, like bowls cookbooks and utensils, etc. thanks for all I your wonderful books. Pick them up to read and enjoy with a hot cup of coffee. Love the videos you and joe take, on your road trips. Happy fall and Halloween! Donna

  84. Dear Susan, In the aftermath of so much “Hurricane Sandy” destruction, I turned this morning to your blog, almost in a fearful state of mind, lest I find out that your island paradise had suffered great damage. Very glad to see that you were spared the brunt of Sandy’s wrath. And by the way, this site is my soothing moment during most days of small domestic “blitz”, let alone during massive crisis moments. Thanks for putting up this small spot of domestic bliss!

I have a question I’d love to have you address: artistic time management. Please, tell those of us who work (even part time), and strive to also be artistic, how you get all that you, do into one twenty-four hour period? Do you have a daily schedule that you adhere to? I know how long it takes to try to do a daily blog with photos etc. There’s a lot of organization behind the scenes here. And, with so many things conspiring to intrude into an organized life (like hurricanes), how do you keep to your art when so many other life details (like new kitchens) can throw off the timing of your day? Thanks. Nancy in Pittsburgh

    • sbranch says:

It takes a kind of focus that some days I just don’t have, I know what you mean! Very difficult to say no, but there is not another word that better describes what you have to do in order to get a lot done. It’s all about priorities. If I wasn’t making this book my priority I would post more, go on more lunch dates with my girlfriends, have a more organized life, get all my music onto my iPhone, wear cuter clothes, design more products, write more thank you notes, travel to California more, and be thinner. But I choose the book right now; which means that some days I have to fight for it. And put those other things on the back burner until it’s done. I’ll bet our girlfriends have other ideas on how to prioritize . . .?

      • Vicki in Cincy says:

Hi! I work full-time and want to have “a life” that does not revolve around work. What I do to prioritize is make a mental list (or written, if too many!), and the most important gets done first. I have in my mind about how long it takes to do each one (I time the ones I hate the most, it gives me incentive) and then mentally have a time when I want to be done with that chore etc. I can get a lot accomplished that way and can ‘schedule’ my free/fun time!

  85. Teresa Johnson says:

Just found your blog this month and thoroughly love it! May I suggest an excellent holiday movie for the girlfriends–“Scrooge” the musical version with Albert Finney. Its a holiday tradition at our house.

    • sbranch says:

All you have to do is say the name out loud to Joe and he will cry! He’s in love with the old Alistair Sim version he saw as a child. No Christmas would be complete without it! Welcome to our blog Teresa!

  86. I love your calanders and your other trinkets, crafts, recipes, quotations, etc…… I am not happy because I can not find any calanders of any sort of yours in the stores. Any store. I really would appreciate if you could let me know of any of the Michigan stores that carry your product. I live in Lansing and Mount Morris, Michigan.
    please help,
    Jackie

    • sbranch says:

We have a web store right here on the blog — because I never know who is going to carry my calendars and things, whatever we make, we get some of it for our own store. Just click at the top of the blog under shopping and take a look around.

    • Christine DeGraves says:

In Michigan Meijer stores carry Susan’s calendars they usually always have them wall -pocket and mini calendars.

  87. Jennie says:

    Hi Susan,
I have a very small kitchen with your print “Things taste better in small houses” adorning my vintange stove. Unfortunately, the glass frame broke years ago and now the print is well worn. I haven’t been able to find a new one so thought I would ask you directly. Do you have any for sale anywhere? Thank you.
    Jennie

    • sbranch says:

Not that I know of, you can check my web store, but that was a good one … we wouldn’t be able to have them framed, but would it be good if we had prints in the store? Maybe we could do that.

  88. Sharon says:

I LOVE Willard — the newsletters always make me feel so warm and homey! Even though I don’t do all of the things anymore that you talk about, I have fond memories of baking with my children, scrapbooking (with Susan Branch items!) So thank you so much for keeping a younger me alive!

  89. caroline De La O says:

Dear Susan I find such joy in all that you do, and I think you are so lucky in many ways especially because of jack.

I might have missed it but have you ever thought of making a tea pot that looks like Jack, maybey with his arm as a spout.

    Caroline

  90. Bonnie says:

Being a kitty lover and a ‘home’ lover vs ‘house’ lover, I thoroughly enjoyed your blog regarding your love of homes. I thought I was the only one! When I read your blog or Willard I am transported to a special place of warmth and love and caring. All time stops and I experience a flood of wonderful memories ! Thank you so very much. Signing up for your blog and Willard was one of the best things I did in 2012. I will own a Susan Branch cookbook in 2013!

  91. Dreama says:

    Love your blogs !

  92. Sheri Capehart says:

Love the sunshine you bring everytime I read your blog. My husband and I love to travel England, but have not been to the Lake District. It is now on our list for our next trip – thank you for your inspiration.

Also, there was a tea kettle in your on-line shopping some time ago; will it be offered again?

  93. Maria in Long Beach,CA says:

    Dear Susan,
You have heard from me in previous posts, but when I saw the title “who is Susan Branch,” I had to tell the world who you are to me.

As a child, I spent summers and a couple winters in Upstate, NY. One summer we rented a beach cottage on Cape Cod, but I came down with the chicken pox and had to stay indoors and watch my sister have all the fun. Even so, my love for all things New England was born and has never left me, much in part to my dear great-aunts Marge and Kitty.

At age 17, my family and I took a trip to Mexico and I convinced myself that it was a horrible flight and that flying was a terrifying ordeal. I am 47 years old and have not flown since…30 years!!!

I discovered your blog about three months ago, and your “happy gene” and inspiring words have allowed me to say “no more!” to fear. This June/2013 my sister(who loves to travel and will hold my hand)have booked our flights to Boston, reserved our rooms on Cape Cod in Orleans(because I have also become a fan of Gladys Taber, thanks to you…have acquired all her books and am slowly making my way through each of them)where we will stay three nights and then ferry over to Martha’s Vineyard for three days/two nights until we return to Boston to catch our flight home to CA on 6/9.

I’m so excited!! I’m pretty sure you won’t be there during June(if you need two house-sitters who love cats…I have three…we’re available 😮 ), but I wanted to make sure I let you know that you truly are a gift from God to me and that your beautiful words and photographs have made me realize that I can no longer sit back and not live out my dreams.

I’ve lost both my parents(both too young to go, in my mortal opinion)to cancer in the last four years. It’s been hard for me to find my “get up and go” again. Your blog has been a major force in restoring this desire in me.

My next trip? Travel to the East Coast, catch the QE2 and head to England. Hmm…I cant’ remember where that idea came from :O I’ve already ordered my copy of “A Fine Romance.” Can’t wait!

In closing, God bless you, Joe, Girl and Jack always! If you are in MV in June, I’d love to just give you a big hug!

    XO Maria

    • sbranch says:

Well you put tears in my eyes Maria, makes me so happy to hear that, you are a brave girl!! I’m so proud of you, you will have a wonderful time! xoxo

  94. Maria in Long Beach, CA says:

With each passing day, I become more excited and less fearful. I’m telling you…God directed me to your site. Thank you SO MUCH!
So telll me and my sister what we SHOULDN’T miss on Martha’s Vineyard. I already missed out on the Charolotte Inn. Booked. We’re staying at the Ahsley Inn. Good choice? I wanted to be in Edgartown. And on the Cape, where do I get the best of Galdys Taber?. Why is it called “Martha’s” Vineyard, by the way? Where should we dine? Too many questions, as if you don’t have enough on your plate. If you can answer, great. Can’t? No problem.

    • sbranch says:

Go to the top of the blog, lots of questions answered right there — lots of photos of the island too! The Ashley Inn is wonderful — you will love it, you can walk everywhere in Edgartown. You can find Gladys Taber books, when you’re lucky, in second-hand bookstores and antique stores.

      • Maria in Long Beach, CA says:

Oh, dear Susan, I know everything happens for a reason, but guess who broke her right ankle Wednesday morning and was supposed to be flying out tomorrow to Cape Cod and MV? I slipped and fell out of the shower! I’ve never broken a bone in my past 48 years. Why now? I’m sure one day the answer to that question will become clear. My sister and I have decided to cancel our trip because I’m in so much pain. I can’t imagine having much fun trying to limp around with my leg in a boot that weighs about five pounds while also trying to become proficient in the use of crutches. But this is just a temporary setback, and we are already re-planning our visit. My question to you is: would a trip in October be as nice; say, around the 15th? We love the idea of Fall colors too, but looking at your beautiful post of the gardens makes me wonder if this should be another year in the making. The flowers, the colors…so magnificent! I imagine it’s probably less crowded in October, but I’m also worried that a lot of places close down. Shopping was big on our list, as was taking tours, visiting historical sites. The beach is not a concern as far as sunbathing because we can do that here. I wanted to hear from someone who actually lives on MV and will give us the best advice. Thank you!
P.S. The wonderful innkeepers, both in CC and MV, refunded all of my deposits on such short notice. Such nice people!

        • sbranch says:

Oh Maria, I’m so sorry! Best laid plans . . . but I can hear your disappointment. October is a beautiful time on the island, maybe the prettiest of all. Try for a little bit earlier than the 15th — closer to the first if you can so it isn’t too cold. Sometimes it gets very blustery around Halloween, so I’m just making sure the leaves haven’t all blown away. But it will be beautiful, crisp, change of season, so different from California … you will love it. Everything would still be open too, and uncrowded. I’m happy to hear the innkeepers were good about it! Hope you feel better soon!

          • Maria in Long Beach, CA says:

You never cease to amaze me at how quickly you respond to posts. And I know how busy you are. I will definitely change my vacation to early Oct. And I’m sure I’ll fall so in love with the island that I’ll be back in the Spring.
Btw, when I was grumbling on my bed right after the break, I said to myself, “I need Susan’s happy gene.” Thank you so much. You’re a wonderful woman. Can’t wait to get my book. Planning a trip to England for my 50th, so I’m convinced you wrote this just form me. Much love!

A couple of years ago, I leaned heavily on an unsupported table, fell and broke my wrist, needed a metal plate put in there — my left wrist, thank goodness — but I understand how the unexpected and uninvited can throw an irritating monkey wrench into best-laid plans.♥

Hi Susan, I need to ask you about your O’Keefe and Merritt stove, I’m contemplating getting one myself as we are going to be doing our kitchen over this spring and honestly after going out and looking at the modern stoves out there I really am not crazy about any of them. Here’s my questions: Can you bake in both ovens?, how do you vent it? Do you use that grill on the oven top? Are you happy with the way it cooks/bakes? All of the stoves I’ve researched seem to all be in California, so shipping will be costly but I really want a good dependable stove that just has that warm nostagic look. I just love the way yours looks in your kitchen. Thanks so much for any info you can give me! -East Longmeadow, MA

Yes, you can bake in both ovens at the same time at different temperatures and they work like a dream. There’s a vent that goes to the outside, your plumber will know about that. No, I don’t use that grill — but some people do. It’s not chrome, it’s nickel and I like to keep it shiny. You shouldn’t use anything scratchy on the nickel, it cleans with simple hot water and cloth or sponge. You can get this same style stove with six burners if you would rather. It’s like cooking in a very heavy pan, which is why everything cooks so wonderfully. When our electricity goes out, our gas stays on, and cooking takes place in the darkest New England storms. We shipped our stove here from California too, and we thought it was totally worth it. Have had it now since around 1990, like having a big marshmallow in the kitchen. You will love it. The shelf alone is worth the price! 🙂

Thankyou, thankyou so much for the info! I so love this stove, it has so much charm and character. I’ve never cooked with gas before but I think I’ll do fine with it. I’m thinking with shipping to MA. it will be about 4,500.00 which is not bad considering what I have seen some of these stoves going for all restored. I know I would love the shelf too as I love to decorate for the seasons. Right now I have a collection of old creamers on the back of my stove. Well this was great information I feel alot more confident now, especially trying to explain to my hubby that older is better sometimes….including me!!! I’ll let you know how I make out…. 🙂

It’s probably here, I just haven’t gotten to the approvals for them yet. Because of the spam we get, I have to click each one through, which is good because I like to read them anyway. Look for it a bit later, I’m working on it! Thank you Maria — love to have you here!
