St. Patrick’s Day

Hi Girls!  I’m thinking St. Patrick’s Day this morning and no St. Patricks Day Celebration should happen without one of the prettiest Irish Songs I know.

Five leaf clovers are even rarer than the 4-leaf variety which make them the luckiest of all!  So girls, Happy St. Patrick’s Day, good luck to you!!  Close your eyes and make a wish!  If you want to take a moment and gaze over the Irish countryside, it’s so beautiful, and goes so well with the music; it’s so Green!  So appropriate!

And when you make this delicious health drink, the best thing you can do is settle down in front of the TV and watch The Quiet Man, one of the most beautiful, wonderful movies I’ve ever seen; it’s John Ford’s love letter to Ireland; the song Isle of Innisfree that we’re  listening to is the theme song for the movie.

In case you haven’t seen enough green yet, but on a far different subject; one I couldn’t allow to go by without celebrating . . .

HAPPY BIRTHDAY GIRL SCOUTS!

It’s the One Hundredth Anniversary of the Girl Scouts this week.  I could write a whole book about how much I loved being one.  I started out in the Brownies when I was seven (that’s me in my uniform with my Princess Leah/Toni permed hair at the top right of this page); I got those wings when we “flew up” from the Brownies to the Girl Scouts.  Our troop celebrated by taking a trip on the “Great White Steamship” to Catalina. I felt as if I was traveling the world. I loved the troop leaders we had over the years, they taught us so much; they were like “other mothers.” I loved making stew in a can, doing a collage with broken-up watercolored eggshells, making a summer top out of a bandana, camping and singing around the fire, marking trails with rocks in case we got lost, and learning to fold the flag.  They also taught us how to put on a pillow case without using your teeth.  All the little necessities of life.

My badges, all except for one, tell the story of my future.  Some are still pinned where my mother put them until she “found time” to sew them on!  The horse riding badge was something our troop did as a group, we took lessons.  That one didn’t stick; the horses were always smarter than me!  But the others are for Storytelling, Childcare, Homemaking, Pen pal, and of course, Cooking.  All the things I loved. All the things I was doing around the house anyway, as the oldest of eight children. The missing star came off in High School to go on a coat; there should be four. The Girl Scouts meant so much to me and to so many others!!!

And Now . . .

BADA-BOOM!

OK Girls, I’m doing something special today, so I have to go!  I just wanted to send you that little recipe and some ideas for Saturday, the wearin’ o’ the green; next post we’ll let Vanna draw the winner of our last drawing — until then, you can still enter by leaving a comment at the bottom of this post —  and when I get back, I’ll also show you what I did today!  OK? One more thing, in case someone around you can use a little magic in their life . . .

For   ♣  Love    ♣   and   ♣   Luck

Have a wonderful Day!  ♥

I have not watched that movie. I am going to add it to my Netflix right now! I hope that you have a great day!

    • sbranch says:

I’m so happy for you! It’s a wonderful movie and you get to see it for the first time!

      • Sara says:

Thank you 🙂 I am really excited now! When I added it to my Netflix list, I saw that it stars John Wayne! He was my Grandmas favorite. She had him all over her house! His movies, Wizard of Oz, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Snow White were always playing at her house. I am surprised this one snuck past me.

        • sbranch says:

Hmmmm. No John Wayne in Wizard of Oz… I don’t think he was in Snow White either . . . or Charlie and the Chocolate Factory; I wonder who you’re thinking of? John Wayne is a great big Marine, Cowboy type — and the perfect person to play this part in The Quiet Man.

  2. Mooch says:

Love all your posts, especially your Girl Scout posts……so many memories that I had not thought about for a long time…..GS was a huge part of my life too! thanks!

  3. Georgeann from Texas says:

Me, too. I grew up in Brownies and Girl Scouts…so many wonderful memories
of tin can casserole, chiggers, sleeping in a covered wagon tent, troop camp,
my first blueberry muffin, raising money to take a trip on a train to visit the
salt mines in Mineola Texas, learning to make a bed, Mothers Day luncheon,
and my many wonderful friends in troop l79 from Fort Worth, Texas!

  4. Barbara from Wolverine Lk Mich says:

Still have my sash, with badges and pins! My mother gave my uniform to a neighbor girl after I had outgrown it……however in the “button box” remained one brown button off my Brownie uniform….it remained there for years! Last year I knitted a hat for a friend and attached a cute decoration I made for the hat – a “felted” heart that was decorated with buttons sewn on – I told her LOOK for the one special button and tell me when you have found it (since she was in my Brownie troop it was highly appropriate to give to her 🙂 She called me and said – it’s a Brownie button! I don’t know if they are still that way, but this tiny brown button has a little dancing brownie on it. I also found at a garage sale a cookie cutter shaped like a trefoil – couldn’t pass up that baby! Haven’t used it yet but should this week in honor of our beloved Girl Scouts.

  5. Kelly B. Pittsburgh, Pa says:

I also have many great Girl Scout memories. Camping in the dead of winter in a cabin at Camp Wood-e-lo-hi, our leaders telling scary stories to scare the be jeebers out of us! Cooking a spaghetti dinner complete with Mexican sundaes for dessert, making sit-upons in Brownies, Christmas caroling and hot chocolate afterwards, earning badges, playing telephone in the circle… So much fun! I still have my Brownie and Girl Scout handbooks and I always think of those wonderful times when I hear “kumbaya”. Thanks for recalling such a simple time – when girls had fun sitting around in a circle giggling in each others ears as they whispered silly message playing “telephone”. Happy St. Patrick’s to you and Joe and the kitties from my family and our cat Lucky (appropriately named after the Four leafed clover we found shortly before we got him!)

    • Patricia says:

Our girl scout camp that I was lucky enough to go to each year was called Camp Is-Sho-Da! Love those names!

  6. Donna Szybowicz says:

    Good Morning Susan,
Looking forward to hearing all about your special something today. Have fun.

  7. Lynn McMahon says:

    Happy Thursday Morning~
I love the movie “Far and Away” and of course ” The Quiet Man”.
I was in labor watching ” The Quiet Man” when my son was born so there ‘s a special memory there. His birthday is March 12 th which is also the day of the official first Girl Scout meeting!
    Erin Go Braugh Girlfriends!

  8. jeannine leonard says:

Thanks for the movie suggestion, It is now on my list to watch this weekend.
Both my girls are girlscouts too. They love it. We just celebrated the 100th birthday of girlscouts last Sunday. Each troop picked a decade, talked about it and did a skit. Then they each sold something for a quarter that went to girlscouts. Ashley had 2000 to 2010 and each girl read about a event of that decade. they sold yellow ribbon pins. Emily had 1060 to 1969. They dressed up in dye tye shirts and bell bottoms. Along with a daisy troop they sang Respect. What a hoot that was. They sold dog tags and different candies of that time. I cannot thank their troop leaders enough for all of their hard work and time they give for girlscouts. Have a nice time today.

  9. Susan Joy says:

You just reminded me that I need to sew a bunch of badges on my daughter’s vest. I’m slacking! I hope you have a wonderful day today. Thanks for the sweet blog.

  10. Maureen MacKenzie says:

Good morning Susan! My husband and I love that movie. The girls in my second grade class that are Girl Scouts (Brownies) love it. Have a wonderful day.

  11. Paulie says:

Just love the wearing of the green. Also love that quote………wishing you the same………returning the thought back to you ……….have a wonderful day!

  12. Jeanette says:

Good morning, Susan!!! Greetings from balmy central IL! Another 80 degree day on tap for us. I must admit, it’s a bit too warm for me. Can’t we just have spring first!?!
Wishing you a delightful day doing whatever you “special” thing of the day is…you whetted our appetite for sure.
    Hugs and love, Jeanette

  13. Holly says:

Susan, I LOVE that you give homemaking credibility! Why is it, in this day and age, that women who actually choose to be homemakers are not viewed in a positive light? Ironically, the women, the ones who fought for the right to be whatever we want to be, are the ones who seem to demean the idea. Sadly, in a conversation with a former co-worker, she shared how she and her daughters were “forced” to clean the house since it snowed and the maid couldn’t come. She said her daughters wouldn’t look forward to snow days as much! Why is it a crime to teach your daughters and sons that it’s OKAY to clean your own home, that it’s not beneath us, that it’s okay to cook and clean and invest time in your home? I think it’s a shame and why I’m so glad you love and promote domestic arts!! 🙂 Thank you!

  14. Noelle Sweeney says:

Thanks for the lovely post Susan! Enjoy your day. Love all of your posts, they just make my day.

  15. Treese says:

Happy ST. Patrick’s Day. I was in Dublin a few years back on St. Paddy’s Day and there was no celebration. They said “Only ye Yanks make a big celebration”. Go figure. I was disappointed. If you haven’t listen to Sinead O’Conner sing “Oh, Danny Boy” it will bring tears to your eyes especially knowing why and who wrote the song. I love wearing the green and eating the cabbage! Yummy!

I will catch the Quiet Man on DVD. The female lead played Haley Mills mom in the Parent Trap-one of my favorite’s.

I was never a Brownie or Girl Scout (I was a 4-H kid) all those badges. It must have been fun. Have a Good Day!
    Treese/Colorado Cowgirl

    • Treese says:

I forgot to add: I did get a little rock at the Blarney Stone (Yes, I kissed it!) that said “May the roof above us never fall in, and may are friends gathered below never fall out”.
      Treese/Colorado Cowgirl

      • Linda Pintarell says:

I, too, remember kissing that Blarney Stone. Never thought I would be able to say that. But it was a must many years ago on a trip to Ireland. Happy St. Patrick’s Day everyone!

    • sbranch says:

Yes she did! You’ll love her in this one too, it’s a very different role!

  16. Kathy from New Jersey says:

    Dear Susan,
So grateful to have the ability to click a few times and waa laa …it feels like a visit with you!!

  17. Claudia says:

I was a Brownie and a Girl Scout but darned if I have any idea what happened to my sash! I wish I had it today. I do have photos in my Brownie uniform. Somehow that was my favorite uniform! Have a great weekend, Susan!

  21. Kelly J. says:

Happy St. Pat’s to you, Susan!! May the Luck o’ the Irish be with you 🙂 Kelly in Eastern PA

  22. Donna Ray says:

Top o’ the morning to you! My corned beef and cabbage are ready for the pot tomorrow and I’m going to try “Irish Nachos”…… waffle style frozen potatoes covered with bacon, green onion and cheese….. can’t go wrong with that combo!
We’ve never seen The Quiet Man…….will have to add that to our evening as well.
Congratulations Girl Scouts!! I grew up in 4-H, but was a Brownie leader for my daughter and friends. I still hear from those now 40-something Brownies about the fun we had……sit-upons, wishy-washies, Alice the Camel, cookies… the joys of discovery and belonging….can’t go wrong with that combo either!
Daffodils on the shore of Lake Ontario…. green and yellow to celebrate! As always, DonnaRay

  23. Donna Hamilton, Arkansas says:

Loved today’s post and wish you well with whatever is in store for today. My nephew received his Eagle Scout award in Boy Scouts last Sunday, but one thing I noticed on all of the leaders uniforms was a button which was celebrating the Girl Scout 100th Anniversary. I thought it was very cool that the Boy Scout leaders were celebrating with their sister organization.
I love St. Patrick’s Day, and I am not Irish, but I was born on March 16th, so I just continue celebrating my birthday on over to the wearing of the Green……
Happy St. Patrick’s Day everyone!!! – Donna H.

  24. Mary Eldridge says:

A local pub named The Quiet Man is one of my favorite haunts. It is owned by an Irishman who was on set during the filming of that classic film. “Herself” Maureen O’Hara has even visited the pub and there is a room named in her honor! Stills from the film adorn the wall and the food is first rate.

  25. Barbara S says:

    Hey Susan,
Happy St. Patrick’s Day to you! I love your blog!!
Hugs from Barbara S. in Cumming, GA

  26. Pom Pom says:

I love the Girl Scouts, too! When one of my students tells me that she is still a Girl Scout, my feelings for her swell! Corrie ten Boom was a Girl Guide and I love that, too!
My Wind in the Willows fellows are spending March 17 in Belfast! So fun!

  27. Gill says:

I grew up as a Brownie, then a Guide, and after sidestepping into Venture Scouts (there were no Ranger guides nearby) I returned as a Young Leader and then a warrented Leader. I lead Brownies and Guides in England, Canada and Australia before getting married. Now my children are in Scouting here in Norway. My father still has his scout beret with his badges and patrol leader stripes sewn onto it- mine cover my camp blanket now in our cabin!

    Happy Birthday Girl Scouts USA!

My home is all done up ready for Saturday too. I change the china on my dresser regularly, and right now, it is all done up in green, white and orange, with shamrocks and leprachauns well in evidence 🙂 I am hoping the weather stays fine for the parade in Oslo!

  28. Denise Brice says:

I loved seeing the photos of Ireland. We traveled there a few years ago and the wonder of that trip remains still. After living many, many years in Germany I was struck by how different Ireland is from the rest of Europe. The Irish are so warm and welcoming, we always had the feeling of home. Remarkable.

  29. Tricia B. says:

Thanks for the wonderful post dearest Susan. I just want you to know that “I love you!!” You are such an inspiration to me and I just want you to know how much I appreciate you and your wonderful blogs and products and the “sunshine” you bring to me and all of us every day!! So thank you!! 🙂
I love the movie “The Quiet Man”. It is one of my all time favorites!! I was a Brownie too!! I remember selling cookies and doing crafts. What a great time in my childhood. My Aunt Joan recently researched our family history and she found out that we are Irish as well!! 🙂 Happy St. Patrick’s Day to you all too!!
Have a wonderful day!! Thank you for just being you!! GOD Bless! Love and Hugs, Tricia B.
P.S. I was in an antique store last weekend and found a sweet, precious, little creamer/pitcher sitting all alone. I picked it up and thought ‘How wonderful are you?’ (I must have you little creamer!!) I thought the design and writing on it looked familiar and so beautiful!!! I got home and carefully washed it and removed the price sticker on the bottom and I was so happy because it is your work!!! I have a piece of your art…it is wonderful!! It was made the year my son was born; 2002 and you have written a delightful prayer on it….so thank you. Your work is a delighful addition to my home. I actually brought it to work and showed all my co-workers. I have your calendar and blotter. I have the best dressed office in town!!! XOXOXOXOXOXOXOX

  30. Gill says:

And I forgot to add that I have just finished reading Alice Taylor’s delightful, gentle and evocative book “To school through the fields” about growing up in County Kerry. I am off to see which others of her books I can find…

  31. Gert~Iowa says:

Oh Susan..as I looked at that 5 leaf clover on my iPad it was as if it was my on laying there…did you find it? Amazing! I can only spot 3 leaf clovers..smie..however my granddaughter can pot 4 leaf ones t if they were the norm.. I must ask her if she has ever found a 5 lef one! Girl Scouts are wonderful..I belonged to the 4 H..being an old farm girl and all…lol

  34. Terri from Swansboro, NC says:

I haven’t seen that movie! Sounds wonderful, going to have to rent it! Thanks for the lovely green blog today! LOL! Thanks for the recipes too… Yum!!

  35. Lisa R (northern Arizona) says:

Oh boy, your sweet post about St. Patty’s day and girl scouts somehow swirled together in my head, making me want some of those yummy Thin Mint cookies! Can’t wait to see what you did today ~ I know I’ll be looking for a cookie stand! 😀

  36. Hi Susan! I have the same fond memories of scouting, and show my support by buying lots of girl scout cookies each year 🙂 My sash looks almost identical to yours! Thanks for sharing the coffee recipe!! YUM!!! Happy Day!! xoxo Debbie

Oh…another fun movie with gorgeous Irish scenery is Leap Year!

  37. Terri from Swansboro, NC says:

Forgot to ask, where did you get that FIVE leaf clover? I have NEVER seen one, how cool is that!! Thanks for sharing…

    • sbranch says:

My girlfriend sent it to me from Austria! Into my diary it went!

      • Terri from Swansboro, NC says:

Austria really? You know all the times I was in Austria, I didn’t really see any clovers! And I was in the country sides and by the beautiful lakes. GOOD for you! I would have put it someplace special too!

  38. JudyCinNC says:

“Agus cuid eile an lae dhuit fein.”
And the rest of the day to yourself, Susan

Hoorah for the girl scouts!!! They helped many girls transistion into themselves. and I loved being a Brownie – JC

  39. Joy Pence says:

I am going to request that movie from the library, I too have never seen it. I bet you were a cute girl scout!!!

  40. Francine says:

Hum…..wonder what “something special” you’re up to today!?! We had some lovely weather yesterday! Not bad today either! I have been going over to my grandkids house (2 blocks away) and getting into some Leprechaun mischief while they’re at daycare!!! Tee-hee! We made a Leprechaun trap over the days I watched them this week, and I sewed a tiny pair of shamrock pants (that they don’t know about) – today the trap gets sprung and the pants left sticking out of the trap – ha! Thanks for the little bit o Irish cheer!

  41. Marie (Long Beach, CA) says:

    Hi Susan and Girlfriends,
It’s a good thing I was already drinking my tea when I started reading this wonderful post, otherwise I may have been tempted to have an Irish Coffee! The recipe sounds delicious. The Quiet Man, is one of my all time favorties! It’s one of those movies where I don’t want to change a thing. It’s perfect. Thanks for jogging all the terrific memories about Girl Scouts, such good times. Love your dad’s sense of humor, too cute! Can’t wait to hear about the “something special” you’re going to do today, I just love surprises! Happy St. Patrick’s Day! ♣ ♣ ♣

  42. Joan Lesmeister says:

So early, but here come the tears – the beautiful music, the pictures (I’m ready to grab my suitcase & fly off to Ireland!), and the wonderful blog! Happy Birthday Girl Scouts! Happy Thursday & St. Patrick’s Day to all! Thank you Dear Sweet Sue for this blog & have a fun, special day!!! xoxoxo

  43. I love St. Patrick’s day, always have, even though I have to go back seven generations to to find Irish ancestors that immigrated from Ireland. Lovely pictures of the Irish country side, so much green. My daughter and I would love to visit there someday. I bought The Quiet Man for my husband a few years ago because he likes John Wayne, but I think I love the movie more than he does. Maybe I’ll drag it out Saturday and watch it. My daughter was a Daisy, Brownie and then a Girl Scout through sixth grade, and she still has her brownie vest and green girl scout sash with all the badges she worked so hard to earn. Somewhere I think I have a baggie with some badges I never got around to sewing on, which I should do so they don’t get lost. Loved those Thin Mints!

  44. Susan in the country says:

I’ve missed your posts for the last couple of days! Love stepping back in time with you and your wonderful drawings. I tracked down and bought all your books because I love your artwork…..just too wonderful!!!

  45. Ellen says:

My badge sash is treasured, too. I loved being a Scout! Happy 100th anniversary to all of us!
Have a happy St. Pat’s Day!
    Ellen from WNY

  46. Kim says:

I’ve glued my Girl Scout Cooking Badge to a magnet and keep it on display in the kitchen……just in case there are any doubts.

  47. Elizabeth from Pasadena, CA says:

And as said in Ireland, ” keep your bright side out”. Have a wonderful day!

  48. peg says:

Sue….my badge sash is….somewhere! I had the Dabbler badge, Cooking & Nutrition badges, Photography badge, First Aid……you are so right…early indicators of what I love today! Great memories for me, too.

Have a great St. Pat’s Day! xo peg

  49. Lin says:

I still have my Girl Scout sash, too! Like you, I started out as a Brownie and went all the way up to high school, and earned my curved bar, too! Recently I found an old Girl Scout handbook, and it was a trip down memory lane! Do you remember cooking breakfast on the upside down can with a door cut in the bottom and a few holes near the top? Were they called buddy burners? Oh my, that was a LONG time ago!
    Happy St. Pat’s Day, Susan!

  50. Sheila Brazzell says:

Top O’ The Mornin To Ya Susan,
I too was a Girl Scout. I don’t have my uniform but recently moved my mom out of her house of 60plus years and found my GirlScout manual. I’m going to take it out and flip through it today. So many great memories of those years!

    Wishing you a rainbow
    For sunlight after showers-
Miles and miles of Irish smiles
    For golden happy hours-
    Shamrocks at your doorway
    For luck and laughter too,
And a host of friends that never ends
Each day your whole life through!
    Happy St. Paddy’s Day,
    Sheila

  51. Top o’ the Mornin’ to ye! When you are half Welsh and half Irish (and half English as well don’t forget) it is a busy month for Patron Saints!
Happy Centenary Birthday Girl Scouts! Here’s to the next 100 . . I will never forget my new Girl Guide unform arriving the night before Prince Charles’s visit to my village . . I stood so proud, the newest sworn in Guide in the guard of honour as he approached the cathedral.
Thank you for the link to the magical images of Ireland . . not unlike Wales, but then we are only about 50 miles or so away seperated by Saint George’s Channel (ha! another Saint)
Isle of Innisfree is one of my favourite songs . . always makes me cry, I don’t know why . . is it the melody or the words? Such a pretty song, and maybe it is because some folks say I’m a dreamer . . .

  52. Country Gal says:

Oh I love Irish coffee ! Lovely post . Hope you all have a wonderful St Patty’s day !

  53. Elizabeth says:

My second grandson is due on Saturday….to this transplanted, Irish bred family, it would be so much fun if he arrived as scheduled! Although, at this point, Mama is not so worried..anytime now has been fine by her for a while. Can’t wait to rev up that rocker again; the older is 4 now and not so inclined to sit and rock these days….pillow fighting is more his thing these days!

  54. Katy Noelle says:

Oh, how I LOVED going to Catalina Island, when I was young. Of course, we went over on that big white boat but, also, a few times, we sailed over in our own boat. Such good memories of tandem bikes, the Wrigley mansion and those little golf carts going up those steep canyon walls on those curvy, little switchback roads – eeeeek! (“Are you suuuuuure that you remember how to drive a stick shift, Mom????”)

Now, there’s a(nother) funny coincidence, here! I was just reading in another blog about a healthy green drink but it had more to do with juicing lettuce leaf. Actually, this blogger lives on a very green island, indeed – Kauai! Can you imagine, with all of the rainbows there, what a tough time they must have with leprechaun population control?

Finally, hiding the gold chocolate coins is a brilliant idea – thank you! =]

St. Patrick’s Day is such a fun holiday – kind of a ‘whatever we want to make it’/free for all holiday. I’ve already started celebrating with some Anuna CDs and watching ‘the Secret of Roan Inish’.

    Thanks for the fun!!! =]

    Katy xo

  55. Patricia from Philly says:

Top o’ the mornin’ to ye, Lassie Susan!
Aren’t you so glad you kept your Girl Scout sash? Mine looks almost identical to your’s, except for the troop number! My favorite was the Pen Pal badge; I was thrilled when I got that one. Years ago, I was about to toss the sash out; didn’t see why I should keep it. I don’t know what was going on in my head that day, but my husband stopped me and said “No! That sash is the fabric of your days in the Girl Scouts! All your accomplishments are on that sash!”
I cannot tell you how glad I am that he stopped my moment of insanity! (Must have been a major “clean-out” moment!)
Can’t wait to see what you have for us later on! Enjoy your day!

  56. Karen says:

LOVE your blog….I try to check in to your website every morning…..just to start my day off on a positive, happy note!

  57. Wendy Louise says:

I Love St. Patrick’s Day, the family tradition of New England boiled dinner, and I always greated my children off the bus that day with the story of a Leprechaun running through our garden and dropping something. They would go looking and find a pot of Gold! Gold chocolate coins ! Oh how they loved that or I would hang gold coins from the apple tree, it was so pretty with them hanging and so much fun for them to pick off the tree. I miss those days but maybe in the near future there will be grandbabies! Thank-you for this green blog, I’m off to the market for a New England boiled dinner! OOXX

  58. Dolores says:

I love The Quiet Man! It is so beautiful and always spoke to the Irish in my soul! It is on my list for St. Patrick’s Day!
Can’t wait to see what fun things you did today!
    xoxoxo

  59. Tora says:

Susan you made my day! I’m off today to find a lovely brisket and start my St. Paddy’s Day Dinner. As for The Quiet Man, I started watching it when I was about 10 or 11 and fell in love with it. I adore that movie and watch it every year at least once! Happy St P’s Day darlin!

  60. Susan Craft says:

Today you have brought back memories I haven’t thought about in years. When I was six years old my mother’s sisters gave me a Toni home permanent. My hair turned out a frizzy mess and I was so embarassed. I’m laughing now but it wasn’t funny then! I guess you could say I got lots of practice for many teenage bad hair days to come!
My Mom was a Girl Scout leader and I made so many wonderful friends through Scouts. We sang camp songs so many times that I can still remember the words today. What a wonderful time it was growing up in Columbus, GA in the 1950’s. Thanks for the memories.

Love getting your movie and book suggestions. I have not seen The Quiet Man but will do so now. Just saw “Bride Flight”. incredible story of three women. Have a wonderful weekend.

  63. Rosemary says:

Ahhh yes, Girl Scouts and Brownies! Hadn’t thought about the sit-upons in forever! And the tin can stew…which I liked! When I was in Brownies…age 7 in 1952…I sold 52 boxes of Girl Scout cookies and earned a trip to the roller skating rink with my Brownie leader and to my chagrin, fell down while skating and brought her down with me! Mortified! I am pretty sure I was a scribe while in Girl Scouts. My daughter had a brief try at Brownies but it did not stick. Great recollections! Thanks.

  64. nanette from Alabama says:

Loved the photo of your flowers and little chickee! It was a day brightener! Hope you enjoy whatever “special” thing you’ve got on your list for today and please do share it with “the girlfriends!” We’ll be waiting to hear all about it! HAVE FUN!

Susan, do you remember this Brownie song. I’ve got something in my pocket,It belongs across my face. I keep it very close to me in the most secret place. I’m sure you can not figure out it might take a loooong, long while, so I’ll take it out and put it on, it’s a great big Brownie SMILE!

  67. Norma Herrin says:

my girl scouts could not believe what girl scouts used to do way back when. my daughter hates it when i break out with a girl scout song lol 🙂 “way up in the sky…….” hehehe

thanks for the lovelies this morning! have a great day.

  71. Christie Ray says:

I love this post! Brought back memories of our trip to Savannah, home of the founder of the Girl Scouts….she was 46 when she started this club for girls. I was 46, at the time, and remember thinking…good gracious, her life was just starting at that age, by doing something so extraordinary. I realized, you’re never too old. And here we are at 50, on our very own extraordinary adventure!
My husband handed me the April 2012 issue of reader’s digest, opened to the article “The Case for Recipe Cards” and said, it made him think of me (and Susan Branch’s crusade to cherish the old recipe box…handwritten recipes, notes, photos, remembrances ..for generations to pass down:) I had to come and share, dear Sue. Xavier is ecstatic over the dancing chicks that came in a lovely package yesterday…along with the breakfast mug…one happy Grammy:)
Have a wonderful St. Patrick’s Day and blessings to Joe and the kitties,
    Christie

  73. Kerry S. from San Pedro, CA says:

    Good morning Susan and friends!
I visited the Lowe house a few years ago during a trip to Savannah. Hearing about that amazing lady was an education in itself!
We’re having “Emerald Isle” weather this morning on the CA coast – overcast and drizzle. Supposed to finally get heavy rain this weekend! So I’ll stay home and make. . .chili to celebrate the day! LOL
Love The Quiet Man film too!
    Cheers to all!

  74. Marilyn says:

Loved your post this morning, Susan especially when you mentioned Toni perms!! Do you remember the perm they had designed for children – Tonette. My mother hated the fact that I had straight hair and made me edure those Tonette perms.

Of course, back in the day, everyone’s hair was forced to be styled and curly. Remember spoolies, bobbie pins and brush rollers?? 🙂

I hope everyone is enjoying a beautiful Spring day!

    Marilyn (in Dallas)

    • Linda in Texas says:

Oh, Marilyn, I remember spoolies–those things were the devil to try to sleep in. lol Same with brush rollers. Oh the things we gals endured to look beautiful.

    • Carol K in Central NJ says:

Marilyn, we were in the same boat. My mother was always giving me Toni perms too because my hair was so straight. That chemical smell was just awful. I had a Toni doll at one point but God only knows what ever happened to her. She was a cutie.

    • Chrissy Thrower says:

      Yeah, Spoolies!! 🙂

    • Martha Ellen says:

I remember those perms Marilyn! My Mama used to give me and my two sisters Tonettes. I especially remember her rolling our hair so tight that we complained! She always said ” beauty must suffer”. Looking at those pictures I’m not sure we were beautiful!

    • Jacquelyn Wirthlin .... Las Vegas, Nevada says:

Marilyn, what fun remembering the Tonette perms! I had so many of them…also the spoolies, bobbie pins and the brush rollers (the size of juice cans by the time I got to high school). My head still hurts from sleeping on them! Thanks for the thoughts and you have a wonderful spring day too!

      Jackie

      • Lori from Maine says:

I hated getting perms!!!! They smelled so awful and I didn’t want my hair all curly! Oh well, now we have flat irons and can make our hair as straight as we want! 🙂

  75. Linda DeFazio says:

Love your blog! I was a brownie, a girl scout and then a co-leader when my BFF’s daughter was little and then when my daughter was young! What fun! I remember when our troop went to Washington, D.C. for a camp trip. I still have such funny memories and pictures from that! I also have old barrettes and buttons, badges, cookie cutters, etc. I may even make another sit-upon, just for FUN! Happy Green Day and Spring! Blessings, Linda

  76. Pat Mofjeld says:

Happy St. Patrick’s Day back at you! Have a cornbeef roast in the refrig as well as cabbage, carrots, and new pink potatoes to make a St. Patrick’s Day dinner…Cream de menthe over ice cream for dessert…there is a wait on both movies at our local library but I added my name to the list. I really like getting movie suggestions of good movies here–haven’t had a bad one yet! 🙂 Incidentally, I love your dad’s Irish joke–again, something my dad would told me… 🙂 Would you believe we are having 75-80 degree weather–the middle of March in Minnesota???!!! And thunderstorms predicted for the weekend–Betti will not be a “happy camper”… 🙁 Last year we had subzero temps right now and lots of snow still piled up…

  77. Geri M. says:

I love your blog, Susan. It is so “real”. I think that is why we love you so. I, too, was a Girl Scout. So much fun to read about your experiences with scouting. And, wondering what “special” thing you are doing today…

  78. Kate garfield says:

“The Quiet Man” brings such good memories! My mother just loved John Wayne and Maureen O’Hara together! I think that is the perfect St. Paddy’s Day movie. Enjoy your weekend!

  79. Jandina Konop says:

Oh my gosh! I too still have my Girl Scout uniform, sash, hat, and the works, and my books too! What a truly wonderful time I had in Girl Scouts. Camping, singing, learning to cook over campfires. Oh! and making Bannana Boats for dessert in the coals of the fire. YUM!!!

  80. Rebecca L. says:

I was fortunate enough to visit Ireland for 2 weeks, good grief it’s been about 20 years ago now, it was beautifully green. Very nice people, very narrow country roads and my first and only encounter with peat burning in the fireplace. Ah, The Quiet Man, I love Maureen O’Hara.

    Happy St. Pats!

    (Riverside, Ca)

  81. Christine Anderson says:

The Silent Man, Wonderful Movie! Maureen O’Hara at her best 🙂
A Happy St. Patricks Day to you!

  82. Sandy Richmond says:

I was a Brownie and Girl Scout too.. For our “fly up” ceremony, we made small wooden boats (worked on them for weeks),painted wishes on them, and attached little candles to them. Then one night at sunset, we took them to a lake (I grew up in MN) and the leaders lit the candles, and we let them “set sail” into the lake, carrying our wishes. It was very moving for me at whatever little age I was. Girl Scouts was the only time I ever participated in a taffy pull too- funny how those little memories stay with you.. I’m enjoying the beautiful unseasonal weather here in MA- and heading to NYC for this weekend. Fun!

  83. Carole K says:

    Hi Susan,
I love reading your blog! So full of remembrances we all share! I never was a Brownie; I was a Blue Bird (forerunner of Camp Fire Girls). Those days after school at Marsha Cooper’s house were so much fun…her mom was so creative. When it was time to move ‘up’ to Camp Fire, I dropped out because I’d started taking piano, and my mom thought it might be ‘too much.’ oh, well.

Quiet Man is a classic, and those who haven’t seen it, may be shocked that John Wayne is the lead character, but what a fantastic portrayal he gives! He and Maureen O’Hara: that’s a movie-magic team.

enjoy today’s ‘something special’ and thanks for the Irish Blessings!

  84. Barbara from SoCal says:

I never knew there were five leaf clovers! 🙂 Hope your St. Patty’s Day is a wonderful one.

My 3 year old granddaughter gets a gold chocolate coin every once in a while when I babysit her. She knows where the little treasures are hidden in a drawer and always asks if she can have the “special coin”.
    Loved your post! As always.

  85. Donna Ackermann says:

susan, you make my day. I love reading your blog. I too have wonderful memories of years spent in Girl Scouts. We had some wonderful leaders. I was fortunate to attend the International Girl Scout Jamboree in Colorado Springs in the late 50’s. After boarding a train in southern Il., we pulled into St. Louis, Mo to find the entire Union Station filled with Girls Scouts. From there it was non-stop to Colorado. Upon our arrival on the return trip my mother was in a panic because everybody was crying. She asked what happened? Our answer was we will never see any of these girls again, but what wonderful memories.

  86. Peggy Cooper from Pueblo, CO says:

Ooohweee! I have friends coming for the weekend, and now I know what we’re going to do Friday night. Drink Irish coffee and watch “The Thin Man” – one of our favorite movies. I know it’s politically incorrect, but my husband and I can’t help but laugh loudly when the old lady hands him the stick and says “Here’s a nice stick to beat the lovely lady with” :o) On Saturday my husband will put on his kilt and I’ll wear my plaid wrap, and we will all head to the Shamrock Pub for a pint and some Irish viddles. Luck o’ the Irish to ya! Peggy O’Mahoney (maiden name).

  87. Pam T. says:

Such fond memories of Brownies and Girl Scouts! Last summer when we were home for our annual visit, I was clearing out some of my “treasures” from my Mom’s basement and found my old “Ditty bag” and all the utensils, etc. for our camp days, as well as my “sit-upon”. I had completely forgotten about those! My sister-in-law was there and reminded me and we had a wonderful laugh about all things Girl Scouts. She is younger than I, but we grew up in such a small town, that we all were in the same troup at one point or another. It was so much fun to relive some of those memories with her. Our husbands (she is my brother’s wife) must have thought we had lost our marbles, but it was so much fun to remember and laugh. Of course, neither of the guys had the faintest idea what a “ditty bag” or a “sit-upon” were. That just made it even funnier. 🙂 Thanks for the memories, Susan, and Happy Birthday Girl Scouts! (p.s. I still have my Brownie pin too!…my mom found it and sent it to me a few years ago)

  88. Barbara (WA) says:

On St. Patrick’s Day, 31 years ago, I brought my baby boy home from the hospital. And my oldest son came home on Halloween!

    • Barbara (WA) says:

PS: I was a “Pioneer Girl” growing up. Wonder if any of the girlfriends were in that club, too?

  89. Angela says:

    Hi Susan,
I pulled my Brownie/Junior Girl Scout handbooks out this week and looked through them to celebrate the 100th anniversary in my own little way. I don’t think I’ve looked at those books for at least 11 years or more. What a walk down memory lane! The songs, the GS Promise, GS sign, GS handshake and Friendship Circle. I remember all so well. I had forgotten the badges I earned, Do-It Yourself, Child Care, Pen Pal, Art in the Home, Around the Town. I was impressed with my younger self and what I had achieved. So many memories came flooding back. I never knew what a S’more was until the Girl Scouts and learning how to build a “Buddy Burner” and “Vagabond Stove” out of a tuna can and juice can just so I could cook a cheeseburger for myself was so much fun! It makes me wonder how impressed my 8 year old would be if he knew of my saviness when I was his age. I could go on but I will spare you. It’s great to share these memories with each other!

  90. Linda in Texas says:

I always wanted to be a Girl Scout, but alas, it never happened. sigh.

Have a wonderful time on your big adventure. Can’t wait to hear about it.

  91. pat addison says:

Top o’ the morning to you susan, everyone. Happy St Patrick’s Day from our household to yours. may the leprechauns be kind to you and may they bring you plenty of gold and good luck to last you all your years!!! i love St Patrick’s Day, and i love The Quiet Man, my favorite john wayne movie. its not St Patrick’s Day until The Quiet Man has been on TCM!!!! Happy Birthday Girl Scouts, i never got to be a girl scout, i was a brownie and after a year or 2 our leader quit and no one would take over so our little group sort of broke up. loved being a brownie, and i get in trouble every march when they start selling their cookies, i love those cookies so i buy as many as i can. and here is an old Irish blessing for you and Joe and the Kitties: may you always have: walls for the wind; a roof for the rain; tea beside the fire; laughter to cheer you; those you love near you; and all your heart might desire. Happy St Patrick’s Day. hugs…… 🙂

  92. Cathy R says:

Hi Susan, I can’t remember if I entered the drawing but wanted to tell you THANKS for introducing me to Alan & Foster ~ I do live a sheltered life in the hills of Idaho. I’m listening to their youtube mix right now ~ delightful. We have a lucky Irish friend ~ his birthday is on St. Patty’s day! Thanks also for your delightful blog, it puts me in the ‘know’and brightens my life! Top of the morning to ya! Blessings, Cathy

  93. Jennie says:

Yay for St. Patrick’s Day! Green has been coming into my house and garden for the last week- well, into the garden due to torrents of rain!

Your dad’s joke cracked me up- and I’m hard to crack!

I was a Girl Scout myself up through the fifth grade. I loved it- especially the green circle-skirt my Grammie sewed for me to wear to the meetings every Thurs. ( you know- the kind great for twirling in! My best friend was so jealous!) I was doing so much by the time I was twelve I was forced to choose between Girl Scouts, playing the trumpet and learning ballet. I chose the ballet, which I did up until my first child came- but I do miss all the songs and camping and crafting and cooking and creating we did. However- I DON’T miss selling those cookies!!!! 😉

  94. Karen P - Wisconsin says:

Happy St. Patty’s Day to you, too, Susan! Thank you for the little mini trip to Ireland….one day I WILL get there for real! I loved seeing your Girl Scout sash! I loved mine so much but, alas, I don’t have it. My mom never kept anything (no room in our small house with 8 people in it!). Fun days to look back on….Girl Scout badges!

  95. Lori C. says:

Only John Wayne could say “Mary Kate Danaher” the way that he does.
And I just love how Maureen O’Hara wants her dowry – her pewter and furniture and lace, her “years of happy dreamin’ in all those things of mine … I want my dream.”
I purchased a little pot of shamrocks and have them sitting in front of my own lace curtained front window.
Hoping all your dreams come true.

  96. NANCY JO says:

    Hi Susan,
Well out the door is a mystery. I should live next door to you , could keep better track of what you are up to.
Anyway, reading the Taber newsletter, had to order the BOOK, “THE RIB AND ADAM”. Do you have that one? Looks like my kind of book. Pretty sure I need some back isues of the newsletter too.
    Happy Spring,
    Nancy Jo

  97. Carol C says:

I loved the Brownie/GS remembrances. I was a Bluebird/Campfire Girl. In my school you were one or the other, everyone was in one. We earned beads instead of badges and each category had its own bead shaped and colored different from the others, We sewed them on navy vests in the patterns we chose. They were really special. Have no idea what happened to my vest. I’d love to have it now.
Does anyone else remember Bluebirds with our blue billed hats and vests with red fronts? When we flew up to Campfire we wore navy skirts, white blouses, red neckerchiefs and our vests. We sold peanut brittle for 50 cents a box instead of cookies. Loved the projects, too!

  98. Barbara S says:

Happy St. Patrick’s Day everyone!! Susan, I love this post!
Hugs from Barbara in Cumming, GA

  99. Pamela A says:

I too started my Girl Scout quest as a Brownie and made it all the way through the “Seniors”. Those were the days…so much fun. I had some great leaders that shared their knowledge and time giving and giving. They shared there homes so we could learn to cook. I remember we had a spaghetti dinner as a fund raiser and served yellow (lemon) and green (lime) jello – we really thought we were the cat’s meow, maybe we were. So many memories of camping, earning badges, selling cookies… Happy 100th Birthday!

  100. Patricia says:

My mother was the first baby girl born in her town on the anniversary of the Girl Scouts in 1950 (March 12). She got her picture in the paper as an “honorary girl scout” (we still have the clipping) and for several years growing up she had her photo in the paper each year in her girl scout uniform. She has several stories about the things she got and things she was asked to do due to this distinction of first baby girl born on girl scouts day! 🙂
