You most definitely were (born to do what you do), and we (your girlfriends!) are luckier because of it!
Thank you for all you do Susan, Happy New Year!

  2. Karen Saunders says:

Good morning Susan…..I’m a ‘Hoot Owl’ (west coast) and you’re the ‘Early Bird’. HA! Are you working on your book or having a glass of tea? When I had my tea party i went to the local tea shop, (she’s from England) and I asked her which tea was her favorite. I said mine was Asaam (sp?) She said Yorkshire Gold is better than that. However….I drink an awful lot of good ol’ Lipton Tea. Have a great day. karen

    • sbranch says:

I’m just about to work on the last 8 months of design for my 2013 Blotter Calendar — then I get to do the book! Have a wonderful day!

      • Janey says:

Yes Yorkshire Gold is the best. In the UK we have different blends for different regions due to the water type. Any tea is better from the pot poured in a china cup and sugar cubes. Delicious.

Happy new year to all our girlfriends worldwide but especially to you Susan 🙂

        • sbranch says:

I’m madly in love with loose leaf Earl Grey tea that has lavender in it. I can’t get past it. My tea tastes have changed over the years, but this is my love now — I save it for afternoon, in the morning I drink organic Earl Grey. Yes, much better in a pot!!!

          • Cindy Garner says:

I love a good cup of Earl Grey Green Tea mixed with Tetley Tea…..I know that as a Canadian I should drink RED ROSE…but I’m a Tetley Girl LOL.
Recently I have become addicted (almost) to Celestial Teas “Candy Cane”- it has peppermint, grey tea….and best of all…..ZERO caffeine…perfect for staying up late and staying cozy warm.

            ~*~Happy Creating Susan~*~

            blessings,
            Cindy♥

          • sbranch says:

            I think I need a cup of tea! 🙂

          • Diane P says:

I wish I liked Earl Grey more… the lavender mix sounds heavenly! But I’m hesitant to try it. I’ve found the only way I like it (so far) is when mixed half and half with Blackberry tea (an idea I found in Victoria magazine ages ago!).

          • sbranch says:

I think tea is an accumulated taste! Not acquired, but accumulated. I will drink the same kind for years, then suddenly, I’m done, and I drink the next kind for years . . . and each of them is slightly stronger than before. Now I’ve started using more loose leaf, and I think it’s because I can control the strength. I love strong milky tea with honey.

          • Mary S. says:

I like strong tea, too, with 1/2&1/2 and honey in it! My very favorite is Spiced Chai, or if I don’t want caffeine, I like Roastaroma, by Celestial Seasonings. My son is like you, Susan – he uses loose leaf. He’s a real tea freak! 🙂

          • sbranch says:

            Mmmm, spiced chai!

          • carol shapiro says:

I discovered Mighty Leaf “Orange Dulce” black tea in a little cafe the last time I was in Charleston SC…can’t say enough great things about this tea…it is beautiful…wonder if I
flavored a black tea with just a bit of leftover orange peel , a clove and a drop of vanilla if it would be almost as tasty! Thks for all your inspiration over the holidays, SB!!! Loved the movie list!

          • sbranch says:

So glad! And if you try that tea, let us know!

          • Karen P says:

Susan, what brand is your Earl Grey with Lavender loose tea? I noticed that there are quite a few different ones. Maybe the brand doesn’t matter?

          • sbranch says:

I found mine in a tea shop . . . I don’t think it matters the brand, this one was just in a brown bag.

        • Margot says:

          Janey,
Have you heard of a tea called Ka Tea? It is a loose tea made for the Royal Wedding. I like loose tea and I would like to know more about the water thing. I have always wondered about that. The water is a bit hard here, but it was very hard where I grew up.

          Happy New Year!
          Margot

    • A cup of tea . . The British panacea to all ailments . . make mine a cup of Russian Caravan . . what more exotic sounding and romantic name to conjour images of exciting wonderment . . so called because it travelled across the Russian Steppes in caravans of camels taking many months from Asia to Europe . . .

      • sbranch says:

what’s it taste like — is it black, is it floral?

        • Diane P says:

Just in case Deborah doesn’t see your question…
(And because I love Russian Caravan tea, too… for its name as much as its taste!) 🙂
It has a very distinctive smoky/earthy flavor – I think people either love it or hate it. The first time I ordered it at a local coffee house, the barista asked me if I was sure that’s what I wanted – I guess some people think it’s too strong. It’s very reminiscent of a smoking campfire ~ I adore it!

          • sbranch says:

Hmmm, I would like it I think, but I would put milk in it probably.

          • Cheryl Danley says:

My favorite teas are English Breakfast and good ‘ol green tea from Japan. I love the English Breakfast( with a touch of cream and agave nectar) for its taste and the green tea for its health benefits. I love all you ladies!!!<3

          • sbranch says:

I also went through a long English Breakfast phase — need to go back for a bit more of that!

          • as Diane says, it is distinctive. Some are much more smokey than others, and there are stories, some fact, some romantic fiction as to how the smokeyness is achieved. Personally, I like to believe it is the smoke from the campfires as the caravans stop and make camp for the night. Far more romantic than the inclusion of Lapsang Souchong as the smokey flavour! I buy mine from Whittard’s of Chelsea. As Diane says, you either love it or hate it, a bit like Marmite then? Which, incidentally, I love that too!

    • Karen P says:

What a fun, informative string of comments here about tea! I have to say I love coffee in the morning and tea in the afternoon and herbal in the evening. I must be sure to try a few of the suggestions offered here! And I think half of it is a pretty tea cup and a dainty spoon for stirring!

      • sbranch says:

The noise the spoon makes clunking in the cup!

        • Pigeon's Mom says:

Susan, your pure enjoyment of the simplest details is so inspiring and fun! It’s the little rituals that make up a homemade life, isn’t it?

        • Bernice Patterson says:

          And the wonderful smell. Bernice

        • Karen P. says:

          Oh, yes!!

        • Coming in a little late, but when I used to drink more tea I loved Lapsang Souchong… a little smoky. I also REALLY loved the Royal Jubilee Blend that Murchie’s, a great tea company based in Victoria, B.C., came out with to celebrate the Queen’s Silver Jubilee in 1977. It’s a really lovely tea. I first had it in 1983 when, at 8 years old, my mom took me to Victoria to see the Queen who was visiting the city for the day. What an exciting day that was! Speaking of Jubilee’s, the Queen’s having her Diamond Jubilee this year, so maybe another wonderful tea will be blended in her honor! Or, how about a Susan Branch blend?

          Take care,

          Jake

          Thanks for reminding me!

          • sbranch says:

There should be a “Love Tea,” for William and Kate — have teas like they name roses! That would keep us busy!

  3. Susan says:

    Happy New Year!

I’m sitting here drinking my tea, thinking whether I should go to bed for a few hours or just bag it and stay up. You, on the other hand, are setting a good “early to rise” example!

Hope I will remember Joan’s words and will be brave in 2012! Thanx.

  4. Lori from Maine says:

Good morning Susan and Girlfriends! I looked at the beautiful moon pictures again. I LOVE following the phases of the moon! One of my favorite things to do is to jump in my kayak (named Bella Luna) at our camp when there’s an almost or full moon and paddle “into” the moon. Following that beautiful light on a flat calm lake with the loons doing their thing….it makes you know you’re alive and all is well with the world. 🙂 Have a wonder-full day! xo from SWH

    • sbranch says:

As I was carrying my tea into my studio this morning, I was overwhelmed with what a wonderful world we live in — again — and your words just add to the long list of the beautiful things.

    • Doreen Strain says:

      Hi Lori from Maine!,
When I read your post, memories came rushing to mind. We used to have a summer camp up on a lake also and I would paddle on out in the night (that’s after I got over being afraid of the bats) and I would lay back and look up at the the night sky. I’m telling you…it was like I could just reach out and grab a star!!!!! Funny how I appreciated going out there when I was doing it, but now that I am older and don’t have the means…my
heart calls for the opportunity to do it again. There is just something about just floating around on the water and having nothing but the heavenly sky overhead. Thanks for sharing your post, it made for a very nice visit with some of my memories that had long been asleep. Oh…BTW…thank God for those bats or the mosquitoes would have eaten me ALIVE while I floated around and there would have been nothing left of me when it was time to return to dock. LOL! FOSB 4~Ever! ~ Doreen ~

      • Victoria says:

        Doreen, Susan and Girlfriends,
I can so relate to floating and looking up at stars. What a beautiful reminder of some of my very favorite things. I can just picture floating along on a quiet night with only the sound of little waves lapping against the boat, with a ceiling of stars sprinkled like salt on black velvet…. so peaceful. A big thank you and all of you!

Susan you have provided all of us a happy, warm cozy loving home where all of us kindred spirits can share all the things we love…. We all seem to love the same things. What a blessing!

        Victoria

    • Margot says:

      That is so cool Lori!

      • Lori from Maine says:

Hi Margot! Kayaking at any time of the day is so beautiful. Of course my favorite time is in the moonlight, but at dawn it’s simply amazing. One time hubby and I were WAY up in northern maine camping. I went out alone and happened upon a mama and baby moose feeding. They were no more than 20 feet from me. Baby kept bleating like a lamb and sometimes would take a step or two toward me, but mama made sure that baby stayed away. I held onto an overhanging branch (the current was trying to pull me along) for about 15 minutes watching the pair with golden mist around them, all kinds of birdsong, ’twas amazing! xo from SWH

  5. That one quote encompasses a whole lot doesn’t it? This year is just chock full of possibilities. I used to love to draw when I was younger, I’m thinking about starting up again and see what happens. You inspire me. Thanks for all you do!
    Have a BEAUTIFUL day.
    Kim

    • sbranch says:

Wonderful Kim, you have a beautiful day too!

    • Pigeon's Mom says:

That’s one of my goals for 2012 too, Kim… Drawing again, and learning to paint. My son got some beautiful picture books for Christmas, including a copy of Tasha Tudor’s A TIME TO KEEP, and I’ve been pouring over the illustrations trying to figure out how she made life so magically bright and serene with her art. I picked up watercolor supplies last night and a new sketch pad…want to capture some of that light for our own family and draw/paint our own memories. Time to “be brave” and try something new in the New Year!

      • sbranch says:

Good for you! I suggest you just copy Tasha, until you feel brave enough to go on your own. That’s sort of how I learned.

        • Pigeon's Mom says:

Oh, yup. I’m way ahead of you ;o)!

        • Pigeon's Mom says:

And, not a bad idea, wither, seeing as you came out rather all right in the end–with a darling style all your own (which would be worth copying too, I might add, but never would have said so right here in the open if you hadn’t suggested the C word first! :o).

          • sbranch says:

I think most new artists do it . . . although my first painting was of a geranium sitting on my dining table — then I did 2 perfume bottles, then I copied a greeting card. I even copied oil paintings by great masters while learning! I got bored with copying fairly soon because you can’t really do anything with copied stuff — hard to hang someone else’s art on your wall and call it your own! Definitely can’t give it as a Christmas present, no way you can sell it — ends up being nice, but in the back of the closet. Your own style will really be the only thing that matters. Still life’s that you set up yourself are original! But copying can help you learn the brush, the colors, and see the lines, while developing your own style.

  6. Joan Lesmeister says:

Good Morning & Happy 2012! We CAN do this, & we can even watch the Rose Parade later this morning (so confusing that it wasn’t on the real New Year’s Day!). I’m packing up Christmas, not finished, but maybe now that I’ve checked in with you, and alls well, I can go back to bed! Only 8 months to go on your blotter – you can do that – and it will be wonderful! xo

  7. Doreen Strain says:

Happy New Year Sue from our house to yours and to all of our “Girlfriends” homes too! Susan, I could not agree with you more about your statement about words. I haven’t shared this before but I’m in the middle of writting a book. It’s my first. I’ve had several of the prayers I wrote for our church (Roman Catholic) published. I’ve been told I have the gift of beautiful words and of being able to draw pictures in minds of readers. So….since I have been about 16 (and I’m now 54) I’ve wanted to write a book. I’ve had a story in my head for that long. For about six months I had been writing and when I found your blog and the inspiration you have provided, I’ve been going at it at a good clip. I’ve read what I have written so far to some of my friends and they love it. So, this year 2012, I look forward to finishing my book and looking into having it published. Your story about how you started painting and now do it as an occupation encouraged me to move forward with my hearts desire. I’m a nurse by profession but get called by my the woman within to write. I’m sure you know what I mean. Thank you for being who you are and for giving us all such encouragement and inspiration. I just love being one of the “Girlfriends” and having all of you as friends! FOSB 4~Ever! ~ Doreen ~

    • sbranch says:

So nice to hear Doreen! Love that you’re doing it — more good stuff from the kindred spirits!

    • Lynn McMahon says:

Good luck to you Doreen in getting your book published!

    • Lesley says:

Doreen, every time I read your comments on this blog I’ve thought to myself she has a gift with words. You go girl!

    • Karen P says:

Wonderful, Doreen! Will be standing by for further word on your exciting 2012 adventure!!!! xoxo…kp

      • Nina says:

Doreen you truely do have a gift with the written word! Everytime I read something you have to say I think “that’s what I would like to say or how I feel etc.”
Unfortunatly I know I do not have that gift! lol
I wish you all the luck with your new book, You go for it girl!
        xxxx

    • Carolyn Ann says:

Doreen, you do have the gift of “beautiful words.” I always enjoy reading your posts. So plug away at that book! Happy New Year to all!

      • Marilyn says:

        Doreen,

You, as well as Susan Branch, have the gift of being able to paint pictures with words. Work with that gift. 🙂

        Marilyn (in Dallas)

        • sbranch says:

I try — mostly I just want to be real! Thank you Marilyn!

          • Karen P says:

You ARE real….that’s what we love about you, Susan!

          • sbranch says:

When I write, I have to remember that a “stupid” word might be better than a really special word, because even though it might be stupid, still it might sound more like me than the special word. That’s what I mean about wanting it to be real, come what may. I’m still figuring things out. But I love that Anna Quindlen, a very smart woman, said “A finished person is a boring person.” Perfect!

    • Doreen Strain says:

Oh “Girlfriends…girlfriends…girlfriends! Thank you so much for all your encouragement. I shared with you all about being called by the woman from within. I know you all know what I mean..it’s just that we really don’t talk about her too often. You all know who she is..she’s has that soft, gentle voice that speaks the truth to you. She helps us to make our dreams, realities. Why Susan, I bet you have had many long conversations with your woman from within. Just like I’m sure all the “Girlfriends” can relate to what I’m saying. I think it’s important to listen with an attentive spirit. If we don’t listen to her…for some reason our hearts experience an emotion of knowing we have not done what we really want to do and for some reason…she doesn’t give up. For years she will keep bugging you about something. For me it is writing. For you “girlfriends” it might be doing something very different. It might be learning and instrument or joining a choir or learning to quilt or it might just be to be honest with yourself. Be who you really are. Let the woman from within you lead you all to a life of enjoyment at being who you really are. That’s what I take from her…the message to be who I really am. That’s what you did Susan and look how much we all love you. I know you are proud of yourself….and I also know…your woman from within is beaming with pride. Take time to speak to her often and let her do most of the talking…learn to be a good listener then make whatever she tells you happen! Thank you all again…my inner woman is jumping up and down clapping her hands with a big smile on her face saying…..SEE I TOLD YOU SO….NOW JUST DO IT DOREEN! She’s giggling away…you all have made her very happy. Love you all! FOSB 4~Ever! ~ Doreen ~

      • sbranch says:

Good Luck Doreen, I love the support we have here! FOSB 4~Ever!

      • Debbie from Valencia, CA says:

So inspired by your words Doreen. Best of luck to you in writing your new book. Let us all know when it is published. Can’t wait to read it. Happy New Year to all our FOSB friends and Susan. So much to look forward too. Yippee!!!

  8. Becky says:

Good Morning from the Midwest! I am sitting here with a cup of coffee by the light of my Christmas tree for the last morning. Soon I will take down the decorations and organize them. I was suppose to do this yesterday but found reasons not to do it. Love the moon pictures teaching my 1st graders about the phases. Everyone have a wonderful day!

    • sbranch says:

Thank you Becky — I was just thinking how beautiful our tree is, normally would have it down by now … harder to let it go this year! The lights!

      • Debbie P says:

Keep it up, Susan…after all, the 3 wise kings are on their way…let the light shine til they get there!

        • sbranch says:

          We can do that!

        • Buzz'n Bea says:

I keep my decorations up until Epiphany, Jan 6th. Sometimes it is called the “12 Days of Christmas,” “Christmastide,” or “Twelfth Day.” Have a blessed New Year everyone.

          • sbranch says:

We still light our tree out in front of the house — we went for a ride to look at lights last night, so many are still up!

  9. Christine from Lafayette, CO says:

You are such a bundle of energy! Working on 2013 and we’re only in the second day of 2012! 🙂 I’ve found as sad as it was to put away all the Christmas decorations and close the book on 2011, its the only way I can seriously look forward to the new year: like, where will Susan take us this year? What delicious recipes will she share? What sweet, innocent and simple treasure will Susan bring to light that the rest of us have overlooked? And I can hardly wait to see “our” little Jack take on the outside world! ooohhhh! so much ahead of us! We can all thank our lucky stars that Susan Branch is leading us into a whole unscripted New Year! xoxo

    • sbranch says:

Love this blog, lots of fun ideas, delicious recipes, full moons, and love to share them! Thank you back Christine, I think the girlfriends are my greatest source of inspiration!

  10. Shelley Bresett says:

    Hi Susan,

Happy New Year from Southwestern Ontario Canada and a Happy 2012! You are such an inspiration. Thank you for sharing your beautiful artwork and delicious recipes. I love, love, love the pictures of Jack and Girl Kitty. I have a few cats of my own so I can relate to the perch by the kitchen window! I believe that 2012 will be a great year for all of us!!
Have a great day! Shelley X0

  11. Amy from Wisconsin says:

Happy 2012 Susan and ALL of the Girlfriends!
This morning I hear the wind outside howling and the snow we received yesterday blowing around while my golden retriever lays to the left of me and one of my two black and white kitties lies in the basket to the right. (the other black and white kitty is in the kitchen “encouraging” me to get moving!).
I work at our school in the special ed. department and we return today from our short Christmas break. How these animals know-amazes me!
I just got done writing on scrap pieces of paper my “regrets” for 2011 and put them into a small paper bag. I will burn them in our fireplace tonight!
I am determined to have less regrets in 2012. I will NEVER regret finding your books, your artwork, and your blog Susan!
    Have a wonderful 2012 everyone!
    Amy

    • sbranch says:

Thank goodness, I would hate to be put in a paper bag! Be sure to write down all your dreams! Thank you so much Amy!

    • Margot says:

      Hi Amy,

I am missing my WI snow!!!

      Margot

      • Lynn McMahon says:

The snow we got last night all blew away here in SE Wisconsin!

        • Margot says:

          Hi Lynn,
My mom is in Jackson, WI. Thanks for the report. We got down to 22 the night before last. Cold and dreary here at the beach, but rarely snow.
          Margot

    • Karen D says:

Hey! We do that too! Only it is usually all our “bad habits”. We write them on papers which we toss in the fire just before midnight. They go up in the smoke to leave with the old year. Then we open the doors as the clock strikes to welcome in the new year!
But it doesn’t really work. Those bad habits run right back around to the front door and come right back in! That’s probably because they are bad. If they were good, they would do what they were supposed to do! ;D

      • sbranch says:

LOL “But it doesn’t really work!!!” I’m laughing so hard. No, we are sort of too human for that! I love the thought of it, and we have to keep trying!

    • Doreen Strain says:

Hey Amy, if I knew you were going to be burning regrets tonight, I would have mailed you a box filled with mine to add to the fire…but then again…it’s not safe to have a barn fire in the house. LOL!!!!! We all have those regrets, some more than others. The nice thing is every twelve months we can start all over again. Your right…one of the best things you did this year was to find Susan’s blog. By doing so…you found all of us and now we have you too. We’re a great bunch aren’t we? I think you should make your fire tonight, pour yourself a glass of wine and toast the New Year in as you kiss all your regrets good bye. BTW….my regrets would have sent sparks all over and the flames would have been multi-colored..hahaha! FOSB 4~Ever! ~ Doreen ~

  12. debbie says:

Good morning! I am having a cup of coffee and enjoying the lights on my tree for the last time as today is the day to undecorate, which is my least favorite day of the year. BUT, the Rose Bowl parade is on later and it is SNOWING!!! YAY!!
Here’s to the best year ever!!!

  13. Sue Connolly says:

    Morning Susan,
Toot the hornes, blow the whistles and ring the sleigh bells because it’s a new year and still Christmas time. 12th night is Thurs. so the season isn’t over yet. My decorations and beautiful tree won’t even think of being put away until after the 12th day of Christmas. That is also a great day to have my friends in for tea and they can see my place all decorated. You know we all are so busy doing things before Christmas that now is the time to relax just a bit if we can. LOL (I even have Christmas music on yet)
Love all the pictures of the moon. I love the moon light even if I can’t sleep with it. Had to laugh after reading your blog. and thought wow how funny, she just “mooned” us, but it was in such a nice way. O.k. I’m also “touched” by the moon. 🙂
For the first time I hung up a Susan Branch calendar. Now I have a bright spot right at the door as you come in or go out. I love it and will be getting only your calendars from now on to hang there. They are wonderful. Thank you for all you do.
Keep warm! It is going to be down right cold for a day or two. Burrrrrr! My cat and dog are already in front of the woodstove keeping warm.
    Girlfriend Hugs
    Sue

  14. Jacqui G says:

Wishing you and Joe the most wonderful New Year! So exciting…the possibilities that lie ahead… and yes, I’m not afraid to plunge bravely into 2012! xoxo Jacqui

  15. Susan Havey says:

Happy New Year, Susan! I, too, am enjoying my morning coffee with my Westie, Nessie, at my feet. You are such an inspiration with all your creative talents and ideas. All of us look forward to each new day and this new year to learn and share what gifts you have for us. I am amazed at how you keep the juices flowing to help us all appreciate our world and the beauty in it. It’s too easy to forget the joy of living with all the media focusing on the negative. Here’s to our Good News Queen, Susan Branch, who fills us with love, laughter and lots of ideas.

  16. Lynn McMahon says:

 Happy New Year  from windy Wisconsin!
Last day before we go “Back to reality” back to work, back to school….and Go Badgers! Go Packers!  Have a great day girlfriends!

    • Karen P says:

It is a wonderful time, indeed, for our Badgers and Pack isn’t it, Lynn!? Happy New Year!

      • Lynn McMahon says:

It is! The game yesterday was one for the books!!

        • Margot says:

I don’t always get the games down here. I wasn’t sure how the Badgers were doing. I heard one weekend even the Brewers won. On Wisconsin!!!
          Margot

          • Lynn McMahon says:

Unfortunately the Badgers lost pretty much on the last play of the game. As for the Brewers they made it all the way to the National League playoffs but they lost…but….the Packers and maybe a Superbowl repeat!! I almost forgot we still have the Milwaukee Admirals..a great year to be a sports fan in Wisconsin!!
            Where are you from Margot?

          • sbranch says:

Love it, we have sports talk, what a blog! 🙂

          • Lynn McMahon says:

We have “all the bases covered!” Sorry I had too!

  17. Martha Ellen says:

Happy New Year girlfriends! I’m enjoying my tea and a wonderful cake made with leftover cranberry sauce-Yum. We disassembled all the Christmas yesterday and now looking at blank canvases to spruce up. I know it’s going to be our best year yet! Enjoy the day Susan. Thank you for all you do for us! xoxo ♥

  18. Nana Diana says:

Amen! NOW if each one of us could figure out just exactlly WHAT we are supposed to do. Maybe that is the goal this year-to find out exactly WHAT I should be doing when I grow up (in this 60 year old life!;>) Hugs- Diana

    • sbranch says:

That is the big question!!! I’ll write about that someday, I hunted and hunted too, I know the feeling!

    • Lynn McMahon says:

      Let’s just not grow up!!!!

      • Cathy in Golden, CO says:

I need some inspiration too!!!! – on what to do in my 60 year old life. Can’t wait to hear/see some suggestions!

        • Laura says:

Be like Miss Rumphius and make the world a more beautiful place!

          • debbie says:

Hi Laura, I had to “google” Miss Rumphius. How have I never heard of this book? How utterly charming and what a wonderful life philosophy! Thanks for sharing 🙂

          • Laura says:

Hi Debbie:). Barbara Cooney is such an amazing author and illustrator….she wrote and illustrated the totally wonderful Emily about Emily Dickinson and Eleanor about Eleanor Roosevelt….for children, but I love her stories! Miss Rumphius is my favorite of all! AND..Lori…Miss Cooney was from Maine…sigh..we love, love, love Maine!!!! Miss Rumphius spreads lupine seeds she carries everywhere in her pocket!

          • sbranch says:

I have to put in my 2 cents — Love Miss Rumphius!!

          • Laura says:

Susan, you ARE Miss Rumphius! Xo

    Fondly,
    Marie in Long Beach, California

  21. Janet says:

Happy New year Susan from Macomb Michigan !!!! I really hope that the New Year Holds nothing but the “Best” for you and Joe and the new kitten.

  22. Gert says:

Oh yes my dear you were born to do this….you are such an amazing writer & makes us all feel as though we are part of your world!

Bless you & I just BELIEVE this will be a wonderful year!!
    Gert

  23. Jeanette says:

Susan, I was thinking about “wishes” from your moon post and thought, rather than set intentions for 2012, I made a list of wishes for this year for all the important focuses for my life! Not a daunting list, very accomplishable, I believe. And, my ‘word’ for this year is Believe ~ I’m excited about the potential it and the coming year beholds. “Wish”ing you everything you wish for yourself!!! Happy, Happy New Year. xoxo, Jeanette

    • Doreen Strain says:

      Hi Jeanette!
I love it “BELIEVE”…believe in yourself. Believe in all things that can bring happiness to your life. The New Year does behold the potential for all your wishes to come true. Happy New Year Jeanette! I’m going to add the word Believe to this years vocabulary too! Thanks so much for the idea! FOSB 4~Ever! ~Doreen~

      • Jeanette says:

Doreen, You are so welcome! Happy New Year to you too. Let’s keep posted on what transpires. I Believe 2012 will be an outstanding year!!! We always have to Believe, don’t we?!?Best, Jeanette

        • Doreen Strain says:

Sounds like a plan Jeanette! Let’s all keep each other posted on all the wonderful things that happen to us this year…big or small! Sometimes it’s just the simple abundance of it all that causes us the happiness…don’t you think? FOSB 4~Ever! ~ Doreen ~

          • Jeanette says:

Absolutely, it is the small things. One reason why I’ve kept a gratitude journal for so many years. Causes you to reflect and be attuned to the little details and how precious they are. Many happy days ahead to you!!!

          • sbranch says:

It’s like counting your blessings — I’m always so much happier after I do that!

  24. Paula B. says:

Carpe diem, Susan. I think that is the motto you live by each and every day. Thanks for the thought behind the post – these are tough times we are living in and many of us are facing real challenges like never before in our lives, it’s going to take some courage and inner strength to get through some of them. I so appreciate all that you greet us with every day. You bring such joy in the lovely simple pleasures of life. As always, thank you.

  25. Marie (from Virginia) says:

Happy New Year, Susan and Girlfriends! January, here you are again! My organization month, my hibernating month, (with books, movies, and letter writing) my over-zealous cleaning month, is visiting again. Geeze Louise, January has always been a potpourri month for me. My kitchen is what I tackle first. House guests mean well, but they just don’t know where everything “lives.” It’s nice to get everything “home” where it belongs. January 2 has always been my day to say good-bye to Christmas decorations for another year. January…a long month for all of us to cram in what we need/want to do. I’m grateful for it. Oops, I went into novel mode.

Susan, thanks for what you give us with each and every post. You make us strive to make our own little world a better place. I’m grateful for you and what you share with all of us.

Susan, I wish you and the Girlfriends, everything you wish for yourselves, in this coming year.

    Bliss!
    Marie xoxo

  26. Lisa G. says:

Now, that is definitely something I want/need to remember – how did you know??
    Many blessings to you –

  27. Sandra Gillanders says:

Thank for the all the wonderful blogs of 2011, looking forward to 2012! Been a difficult year for many of us, thank goodness you are here to brighten the days. Happy New Year! Here’s hoping Girl Kitty and Jack form a lasting friendship this New Year!

  28. EsSuzy says:

Dear Susan, I like what Susan Havey said above, you keep us focused on the joy of living. Yes, you do and sometimes we all, I know I do, need that encouragement. Well, after 2 years of glorious retirement, I’m going back to work tomorrow! Just part time, 2 mornings a week, but I think I have to follow my calling to teach children for a while yet.
Also wanted to let the girlfriends know Baby Boom is going to be on TVGN at 8pm tonight for those of us who havent seen it and are still ignorant about Netflix. But if you have a dvr and haven’t used the smartsearch feature, I highly recommend it!
More about the moon, also…I’m glad to know I’m not the only one who is awakened by the moon shining in the window…wunderground dot com has a great astronomy section, in addition to weather info, and will also tell you needed things like tomorrow the day length will increase 53 seconds. Sometimes, in the winter, I really need that information! And… farmers almanac website has a lot of moon info as well and one can also follow them on twitter for moon and gardening updates.
Just had to share some, Susan, because you share SO MUCH with us. BTW, thank you for introducing me to listening to youtube while I’m on the computer…so pleasant and I never had even tried to do that before last month.
    TGIM!!! Love, Susan L XO

  29. Karen P says:

Joan of Arc certainly was one who understood what it meant to plow ahead knowing her mission was something she was born to do! What inspiration for the new year! Blessings to you Susan and all our girlfriends (and Jack and Jake, too!) xoxo….kp

  30. Sarah Maldonado says:

Merry New Year, Susan and girlfriends of the world! The sky is blue, the air is crisp, the fat housewrens and now olive colored goldfinches are gathered at the feeder while the squirrels chase one another up and over the fence and trees. All is right with the world as we anticipate the possibilities of the year ahead. Thank you for all the inspiring words, the art that makes me smile, the musical interludes, and sharing our comments with one another to enable us to have a big tea party on the best days and virtual hugs on the worst days. Time to accomplish something to remember the day! 🙂

  31. pat addison says:

good morning Susan, good morning everyone, its early here..soon it will be time to let the chickens out for the day and feed them, and gather some eggs for breakfast. get to watch the rose parade later at 8 am, don’t you just love all those beautiful floats covered with flower petals??? absolutely gorgeous!! have alomost all the christmas things down and put away, the tree is bare and we left it up for the cats to sniff and explore. have to wash the windows, and run the broom and vaccuum cleaner around to get all the pine needles. we used to love it when mom cleaned up all the pine needles in the vaccuum, then we would want to vaccuum our rooms and have that lovely pine scent in our rooms. well its a brand new day and a brand new year, and i hope its a good year for everyone. enjoy the rose parade. hugs……….. 🙂

  32. mari says:

Happy 2012, Susan 🙂 May the year ahead be filled with all the wonderful and creative things you heart can hold! I’ve been up since before dawn, but not on computer 🙂 having coffee, enjoying the Christmas decorations for one more day before they come down tomorrow. Now looking forward!

Whatever this year holds for each of us, we are here for each other! Thanks for this wonderful and inspiring forum!!!

  33. deborah says:

Right back at ya Susan! And to all the wonderful people here as well!

  34. Nellie says:

Happy New Year to you and Joe, Susan! I do actually agree with the others who have said that you were born to do what you are doing, enriching our lives with so much joy with your words, photos, and images.

Earl Grey is my husband’s choice of tea, and was mine this morning. What I really love is Ashby’s Christmas Spice Tea, but couldn’t find any around here to replace the supply we depleted this year.:-( I could drink it year round!

Christmas is all packed away until later in this year, with the exception of the Nativity sets, which are left out until after Twelfth Night – Epiphany.

    We’re ready for 2012!

    Have a great day!

    xoxo

  35. Treese says:

I love Joan of Arc; that armor; that big bay steed. A true hero. Here’s wishing everyone a blessed, safe and Happy 2012. Oh Susan, I loved A War Horse; Steven Spielberg always has optimism threaded into his films. However, the film War Horse is nothing like the book. The horse “Joey” tells the story in the book; he doesn’t in the film and there really are little similarities between the book and film. The film is a heartbreaker and a complete box of Kleenex movie so heads up for those who are going to see it.
    Treese/Colorado Cowgirl

    • sbranch says:

Scares me! Never like to even think about animals in any danger at all! War. Horse. Says it all! Thank you for the review for those who are seeing it!

      • Sarah Maldonado says:

Oh, I’m the same way. I still worry about Toto in the Wizard of Oz when I don’t see him in the scene…just worry too much about the animals to watch animal pictures even if it all turns out ok in the end. but I’m sure it is a great film and all will enjoy it.

      • Treese says:

        Susan
It seems like some “Children’s” books present cruelty to animals. My grandfather didn’t let me read Black Beauty until I was 15 years old. I think the author Anna Swell attempted to write a book in 1877 about animal welfare. I didn’t see the kindness, sympathy and respect. I read man’s cruelty not only to animals like Beauty and his stable mate “Ginger” being worked to death. The book also displayed man’s inhumanity to each other. The War Horse is sad but, Black Beauty-that book-is just depressing! I walked out of the 1994 Black Beauty film because it broke my heart. However, you are correct the War Horse is not a happy story. The positive part of the film is the cinematography of the English Countryside is breathtaking.
        Treese/Colorado Cowgirl

        • sbranch says:

I always love the Oprah quote — “We did then what we knew how to do, now that we know better, we do better.” That’s my hope for the world! (and me!)

          • Cathy in Golden, CO says:

            That’s settled – I can’t/won’t see that movie!!!

          • sbranch says:

I just know my very strong inner chaperone doesn’t want me to see it! 🙂 And believe me, it’s not easy to turn down a Spielberg movie!!!

    • Doreen Strain says:

Thanks for the warning Treese! I used to cry over Flipper so I’m sure I’d need a crying rag if I went to see War Horse. I don’t do well with film about animals…so afraid they had to go through so much just to make the movie…sometimes it just makes me sad that the poor dog, cat, horse, bird or whatever isn’t sitting in a cozy home just hanging out being loved by a family. FOSB 4~Ever! ~ Doreen ~

  36. Karen C says:

    Happy New Year Everyone!

Thanks to you girlfriends, I have now put the Rose bowl parade on, and have been inspired to get on with the day. Better late than never I always say. Not sure what I was born to do but alas I carry on. Thank you Susan for your wonderful blogs. Sending you positive energy to create your 2013 blog.

    • sbranch says:

I think all of us were born for one reason, to lighten the load of the others around us. I’m sure you do that, so there you go, you are doing what you are born for!

      • Karen C says:

Thank you Susan, you are so right. Maybe it is more simple than we might think.

      • Karen P says:

I have a quote that I have framed on my desk that I love. It says, “To be truly happy, don’t do whatever you like….LIKE whatever you do!” Find joy and contentment in the mundane as well as the exciting things in life!

        • Doreen Strain says:

Karen, then you have the not so mundane but the stormy times. And for those times, I have this quote on my desk at work that I love. It says “Life is not about waiting for the storm to pass…It’s about learning to dance in the rain!” and I always like to add when I read it….”In my piggy feet”! When I was a child we used to play in the rain during the summer and jump in the puddles in our bare feet. Life can be so much more enjoyable when we practice to allow our hearts to be childlike. I love the idea of having a journal for the things we appreciate in life. Writing them down really does make you take more time to think about them and truly appreciate them. Like I’ve said before, sometimes it’s the little things that give us the greatest joys…the simple abundance of it all is the gift we receive and it’s even a greater blessing when we realize it! FOSB 4~Ever! ~ Doreen ~

  37. Margot says:

Joan of Arc certainly had a great faith!!! A foremother to show women can do anything they set their mind to, with some risk involved of course.

  38. Karen C says:

    I meant your 2013 blotter.

  39. Pat Mofjeld says:

Blue skies and sunshine here but cold winds and highs to mid-20’s today and a brilliant white outside with the snow we got New Year’s Eve. Yes, that is the issue: Having faith to wait and watch and trust that an inner voice will direct oneself in the right direction. Sometimes it happens soon, sometimes later, but I trust it does happen…I’m waiting… 🙂

  40. Karen C says:

    I’m waiting too!!

  41. Glenda says:

    Susan,
Yesterday was so busy with church and a nice lunch afterwards at a restaurant my Beloved and I both like. We were both so sleepy from the night before though. After the midnight ball dropped, hugs and kisses and a toast, we both got busy. My Beloved is writing a book and I was reading one. We both went to bed in the wee hours of the morning. We did have our black eye peas (for good luck), collards (for money), and okra for our New Years dinner.Would love to know where this Southern tradition got started. Nice day. Today we took down all decorations and packed them away (think we might need the rest of the day off 🙂 and I finally got to hang up YOUR calendar. I just love it an treasure each month. Thank you….looking forward to your new book in the new year!

  42. Marilyn says:

Happy New Year to all from deep in the heart of Texas!

It’s a sunny, cool, crisp day with not a cloud in the sky. It’s the kind of day that energizes your body and mind.

Here’s hoping that 2012 is filled with sunny days that make you want to go out and conquer the world!! 🙂

    Marilyn (in Dallas)

  43. Another perfect day! You’ve been such an inspiration to me. May your 2012 bring you many rewards!

  44. Mary Ann says:

Well the tree is now down and sadly dragged to the curb for pickup tomorrow. I did enjoy watching the Rose Parade while wrapping all the ornaments away for another year. I will leave up the little artificial tree and the huge snow globes for another week or so because this is my last day of vacation and I want to spend a little time with my quilting muse. Happy New year dear Susan and all my new friends.

  45. kimi says:

    Happy New Year Susan…

Yes! we were all born to do something in this life, to come together as a people to love care and give each other our talents and make this world a better happier place filled with Gods love and you too Susan Branch! xoxo “This world needs good people in heart and in soul they go together these are gifts and your a gift thank you for opening your world with good clean fun!!!

  46. Sandra says:

Fabulous quote from a fabulous woman.

  47. Juliana says:

Thank you for yet another inspiring quote! The holidays here were so crazy, and busy with me working extra hours that we are still enjoying our decorations. Having company over Friday night, so we won’t be “cleaning” house till next weekend. I need that extra time to enjoy the tree, one of my favorite things, with all the memories. All my children came home and now they will be going back, one by one, and it will be time for a fresh start! January is like a clean slate to me. Putting away the decorations always makes me want to reorganize the house. So we just got new slipcovers and curtains for the living room – seems so nice and clean! Now going to make some pillows to match. Happy, healthy, creative New Year to you and Joe, Jack, Girl Kittie and all the Girlfriends!!!

  48. Linda Wattier says:

Just sitting here having a salad and trying to decide what to work on this afternoon. Feeling really motivated after reading your blog. Want to start working on pictures, organizing and scrapbooking. Your blog is like a dose of medicine. Happy New Year Susan and gilrfriends. Hugs from South Dakota.

  49. willy says:

happy 2012 to you, dear susan, though i don’t KNOW you, you certainly make it easy to feel that i do! Thank-you for all of the wonderful, inspiring, beautiful posts, products and books that you create with such a HUGE HEART!!!! I figured that the new year is the perfect time for me to actually send you a message, since you often make my day so much sweeter! THANK-YOU all through the glorious year!!!!!

  50. Jerri Ellen says:

    Hi Susan!

It’s good I prefer ice tea because it is in the mid to high 70s AGAIN here in southern Cali. I am hooked on Paradise brand passion fruit tea. I just ordered the cocker spaniel mug you have for sale in your online store. My Hobo looks just like that dog. I’ll be drinking my ice tea in the mug. Also, had to order the heart-shaped ice cube molds. My icemaker is on the fritz so I am making ice right now with ice cube trays. Such a drag, but your trays will make it more fun. See how I turn a negative into a positive??? Well, I try!

    XOXO
Jerri Ellen from San Juan Capistrano

    • sbranch says:

You’re doing good! Love it, heart shaped ice in passion fruit tea in a cocker spaniel mug? It’s the little things in life! 🙂

  51. You were born to do what you do with panache and flair, which is bringing girlfriends together across the world in friendship and harmony! Thank You Susan! You always make me smile!

    • sbranch says:

I always knew they were out there from the wonderful mail I received, but until, first the computer, and then especially the blog, there was no way to introduce us to each other!!

  52. Sue says:

We are all so lucky that we were born to share with each other. Thank you for bringing us all together. I am looking forward to a “girlfriend” filled year.
    xoxo

  53. Nancy says:

Happy New Year to you, Susan, and to Joe, and Girl Kitty and Jack!

I’m the oldest sister, that’s for sure! I have a youngest sister best friend who keeps me under control! 🙂

  55. bobbie fey says:

“I Am Not Afraid ” jumped out at me like a bolt of lightning. For some reason this message has special meaning in this time of my life. Your blog makes me feel young at heart and hopeful that goodness lives. Ageing is not fun but you are! Keep inspiring us and have a very Happy New Year!

  56. Donna says:

Happy 2012!! I just love your blog, and I love reading all these comments, too. I learn and enjoy it so much. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!

  57. Mary Ann says:

Good afternoon and Happy New Year everyone! I’m sitting here sipping my hibiscus tea. Very relaxing! Tomorrow we will begin to dismantle most of the Christmas decorations. The house looks so naked and it takes me a week or so to get used to the bare look. But the tree will stay up until Three Kings Day on January 6.

Susan I tried to send you an email about Jacquie Lawson cards. Her website is jacquielawson.com, and she’s in England. For those of us who are Anglophiles or just love a quieter time and are a bit nostalgic, her cards are great. Anyone else familiar with her cards?

    feliz año nuevo!

  58. Jacquelyn Wirthlin says:

What wonderful positive comments, plans, and goals for the New Year! A slow start this morning with eldest son heading back to eastern British Columbia, Canada, after wonderful holidays with us in Las Vegas. He is fortunate to have a good engineering position up there but difficult to wave goodbye knowing it will be a long while before we visit again. Seems like I was worried about way too much as we met his lovely girfriend for the first time and really loved her! She lives in the San Francisco Bay area and misses him a lot as well …
Reading your quote, Sue, and all the wonderful wishes from the Girlfriends out there redirected me. I want to wish you all a very happy, healthy, and prosperous New Year. The best to everyone.

  59. Evelyn says:

Happy New Year again Susan! I’m feeling a really good vibe in the air since midnight on New Year’s Eve. You know, your sentiment today is so appropriate. I’ll be widowed 5 years in the 11th when my beautiful husband left this world. I never in a gazillion years thought I’d ever reach the point I’m at right now. I was lost, lonely and terrified and truly didn’t think I’d survive. But here I still am. Not so scared anymore. Life certainly has a way of working itself out.
Btw, I love Celestial Seasonings pear vanilla white tea…so delicate and delicious. It’s been my mainstay tea for several years now. I’m also an Earl Grey lover too.
Stay cozy, the weather is turning wintry here.
    Evelyn from Philadelphia

    • sbranch says:

Look at you! Nothing stays the same. It’s so nice to hear from you Evelyn. It’s cold here tonight too, we have a fire and an old movie to watch.

  60. Ellie says:

We were all born and meant to do something!….You do what you do, she does what she does, and I do what I do…..We all have purpose and meaning in this life!..May we all discover what we are on this earth for and may everyone have the best and most banner year yet!!….Happy New Year!

  61. Jeanne Hedin says:

Happy New Year, Susan . . . you spreader of sunshine (and moonlight, too :-))! And Happy New Year to all the Girlfriends!

  62. Wendy says:

Happy Mew Year, Susan!! (Yes, I said “mew” on purpose. 🙂 )
Want to thank you again for all of your inspiration and all the hard work you put into your blog. Home-cooked meals, cute decorating, appreciation of the smallest details, classic movies….you have inspired me to enjoy the finer things in life. God bless you and your family in 2012!!

  63. Joann says:

I’m not exactly sure why, but as soon as I read that, I burst into tears….Joan of Arc is my patron saint. When I was a little girl and I was told that and I also learned that she burned to death, I cried then, too!!! ha-ha-ha

I think I’m crying partly because we’re in the midst of such change and we haven’t been able to find ‘it’ that we’re looking for…..and we have limited time that we can stay in the rental house…and so on and so on…..

I KNOW I was born to do ‘this,’ but what? Still to tell……

    Happy New Year Susan….

    Love and Hugs,

    Joann in Colorado

    • sbranch says:

I’ve been through that kind of frustration, looking back I call the period “the foundation for the creation” — whenever I was trying hard to make something happen, and couldn’t, it seemed I was working on it, even when I didn’t know I was, that there was movement, even though I couldn’t see it. Very frustrating time, but it really does seem to be part of creating. You are born to do this, your sunny smile is proof to me that you will be wonderful at it! Happy New Year Joann!

  64. Doreen, best of luck with your book it seems you are answering the voice within you and it is never to late!!! I had a dream years ago to be a photo journalist and travel across the World and give a voice to people who otherwise would remain silent….well, marriage/child came along and the dream is fading but still alive? My family is always begging me to write a childrens’ book but it just seems so daunting…..I think being able to touch people with our words is a Gift from God…some like Susan do it on a large scale; and others like myself are content to share with family/friends and bring happiness with a written note or poem….who knows maybe this New Year will inspire me to start that book…..in the meantime I am content to share our lives daily thanks to wonderful Susan and all of her generosity.

  65. Vickie says:

    Susan,

Happy New Year and thank you for being such a bright light in our lives. I wish everyone a wonderful 2012!!!

Happy New Year Susan!!! Thank you for the beautiful “full moon” bookmark! I can’t wait to track the full moons throught 2012! We’re keeping all of the Christmas decorations throughout the week, until next Sunday….am I lazy? I just love enjoying them until the Epiphany…just alittle bit longer. Hopefully, we will get an accumulation of snow soon…Mother Nature needs to decorate the outside to create some winter magic…our cross country skiis all getting dusty! Ginger Peach tea is my favorite, with a splash of honey! Keep warm!!!

Keep doing what you’re doing, Susan! I’m lovin’ it. And thanks for the moon phases bookmark. I had mine laminated.

  69. jane zamudio says:

Happy New Year to my favorite calender, blog, movie lover gal! I went to an antique shop today, bought a tea pot that sat on the shelf “waving” at me as i strolled by. I went home cleaned her up, boiled some water, then had a wonderful pot of peppermint tea! I have to say, we had a wonderful hour or so together! My mother used to say, that there was nothing that couldnt be worked out over a pot of tea!. Thank you so much for reminding me of those wonderful words of wisdom!!!xoxoxo!!!!!

  70. Regina says:

Happy New Year, Susan, and all the rest of our girlfriends. I am still so amazed how we all sound so much alike, loving a hot cup of tea in the evening to warm our souls and having such positive energy and inspiration to carry us into the new year. It feels so good to be alive with all the possibilities before us. My daughter got engaged on Christmas morning so we have wonderful things to look forward to this year. She lives several states away and the wedding will be where she lives, so we will be doing lots of phone calling and emailing.
I’ve been cleaning my bedroom, rearranging my books and magazines and trying to declutter. I’ve kept some of your calendars from past years so I’m pulling them out to read again. They’re like a book! I just love them. Christmas decorations all put away, and we’re still waiting for our first snow here in the Midwest! Unbelieveable that we haven’t had one yet. I do miss it. I don’t think anyone can argue about the beauty of trees and fenceposts covered in snow. Doesn’t look like we’ll see any this week. At least we have beautiful sunshiney days. Blessings to all of you in 2012.

    • sbranch says:

I know, I’m torn too — miss the snow, but life is sure easy like this!

    • dottie says:

I also hold onto special calendars from past years — hubby scoffs but i’ve found many memories are contained in those hasty notations in the little boxes — some good and some not so good perhaps but serving as the kick for our recognition of the good , the not so good and the progress made from both kinds of days! And that’s a reminder that when things are not so good — they will get better.

All good things to all the girlfriends here in the coming year!

  71. DonnaRay Evans says:

Gollywiz, I haven’t checked in with you all since we were worried that Jack would topple the Christmas tree and WOW, what fun and inspiration and good feelings I’m filled with now after reading all the posts and girlfriends’ responses. I stayed away too long……won’t do that again…..because it feels so good to be excited and inspired with the words and images you share, Susan, that are then embroidered by the girlfriends. Thanks, you all, for the laughter and motivation and ideas! Love being in your company. As always, DonnaRay

  72. Patty says:

Loved being reminded of the courage of Joan of Arc!
BTW Susan, I see Thursday snow is headed for your area…Pictures please!?

  73. Kay Swanson says:

Happy New Year 2012! A friend of mine gave me a darling little teapot for Christmas, so I am now oficially a “tea” drinker! It’s been fun trying different kinds…so far, I’ve not been disppointed in any I’ve tried. After reading your blog, I have new kinds to consider! Thanks! Oh yes, I’m hoping you might consider doing twelve 5×7 monthly calendars that would fit in a lucite easel I purchased in Cambria, California, years ago. Other artists design them, but none would compare to your artwork! I’d love having one on my desk where I work each day! I’m sure others would welcome it, too!

  74. Kelly J. says:

Thanks for Joan’s words of wisdom! I’m heading out into a cold morning after an eleven day Christmas break :/ Thanks goodness for coffee and warm sweaters 🙂 Have a great day, Susan!

  75. Watch out what you wish for..SNOW and temps. are 14 this morning. We travelled back to our old neighborhood yesterday for a New Years dinner with dear friends…we had a dusting overnight, and then it was just squalls off and on before we left….while we were visiting 75 miles from home; here came a blowing heavy snow so we decided to leave early. The interstate was like an ice rink and cars were not only off the highway; but, some were turned over and through fences with ambulances all around. All I could think of while being a nervous wreck was all the girlfriends begging for snow….this was a fluke in IN and there were so many accidents across the State. I just prayed that no one was seriously hurt and that we would arrive back home safely which we did. There is a big difference between a serene beautiful snow which we all want, and a treacherous snowfall that causes havoc like yesterday that we do not need? Wishing a peaceful, beautiful, snowfall for everyone!

  76. Lori from Maine says:

Good morning everyone! I’ve been a self-proclaimed “tea snob” for years. I think I started with tea at around age 14 (and I’m 57 now). At the moment I’m drinking a cup of “PG Tips” tea. It’s wonderful! Plus it comes in the nicest cube-shaped box. I save the empty boxes for gifts, it looks so cute when it’s wrapped. (reduce, reuse, recycle 🙂 )The Christmas decorations came down yesterday and hubby and I spent quite a while packing them away last night. There are a few strays here and there. Time for a good cleaning and redecorating…lots of candles for winter! It’s a beautiful day here on the coast, bright blue sky, a few clouds and cold. Have a great day Susan and girlfriends everywhere. xoxo from SW Hbr.

    • sbranch says:

I have PG Tips in my tea drawer, not so much for me, but for best friend Lowely, who only drinks PG Tips and is my tea drinking partner!

  77. Terri says:

Yes! May we all do what we were ‘born to do,’ this new year – without fear! Happy New Year, Susan and FOSB!

  78. Lynn McMahon says:

    Don’t you just love us!
We were ALL meant to be girlfriends we never met! (One of us said that!) Aren’t we clever!

  80. Marie (from Virginia) says:

Way to go Doreen! Susan~another example of what you do for us. You give in big ways (encouraging Doreen to follow her passion) and in small ways, that I personally take through the day, to bring joy to my heart, and hopefully to others.

Love this “club” I belong to!

    Bliss!
    Marie xoxo

  81. Heidi says:

    Hi Susan,

Your blog is delightful – so much fun reading all of the posts. It’s like chatting with friends who have the same thoughts, feelings and interests. My tree is still up – will miss the lights so much. A friend gifted me with a Snowman made from a gourd. It has a small light inside so that will bring some cheer once the tree is down. I’ve also been enjoying Candy Cane tea by Celestial Seasonings. A couple of other favorites are Comfort and Joy tea (seasonal) by Republic of Tea and Ginger Peach tea by Revolution. I attended a Christmas tea/luncheon at a tea room. They set tables of four. We were each served a pot of tea and encouraged to share the pot with others at the table. A fun way to try different teas! They had the neatest thing on each tea pot – I can’t remember what they called it – maybe, drip stoppers – but the item prevented the tea from dripping when poured.

Thank you for mentioning cream of rice cereal in a previous post. It’s a comforting and easy to eat and prepare breakfast, especially since recovering from a bit of food poisoning.

    Sorry for the long message.

A very Happy, Healthy New Year to All!

    Heidi

p.s. Any chance of a Susan Branch planner? It would make the work day quite cheerful:)

  83. Bee Stevens says:

Thanks so much for the moon post and bookmark. Love reading the comments-
who knew there were so many kindred spirits about. I just had a cup of tea
with friend and loved it – it was Twinings – Prince of Wales Tea. Happy 2012
    to everyone.

  84. Bee Stevens says:

    Sorry I forgot 2 things – I too would like a 5×7 calendar for a lucite stand,
I had your last year and loved it. I also recommend the website Jacquie
    Lawson.com for online cards.

  85. Jim and I spent our morning taking down all of our decorations and packing them and putting them away!!! I miss the lights but must say it is a great relief when they are all put away for another year….then came the not so fun part…CLEANING THE HOUSE…and putting all the “normal” things back in place…we put on the music and got busy. I just want to remind everyone that Meteor Showers can be seen between 3am-5am Eastern Time Wed. look in the N.E. the news just said?? Now, since we are having temps. in the teens here I do not think I will make that show….but, all you girls living in the warm States be sure to let me know how it was!!!! Susan, your Moon pictures go right along with this event…will you be out watching??? Enjoy

    • sbranch says:

Not out, but watching! It’s 15 degrees here at 4 am, I don’t really want to see it THAT bad, but I turned off all the lights in the windows to watch the stars from the warm inside — I saw just one shooting star, and then my face was cold, so I stopped!

  86. I really do think that I am born to do what I’ve started doing… but is still a little fear-instilling! Here’s to new adventures for the New Year!

  87. Doreen Strain says:

Hey “Girlfriends”, I’m going to spend this Saturday going through all of my recipes and setting up my new Susan Branch cookbook that I got for Christmas from Santa. I’m so excited. I’m planning for it to take me the whole day. I even went out and bought myself some new tea to have while I’m doing it. I’m going to treat myself to a nice lunch and really enjoy going through my recipes and copying the ones I have used and loved from some of Susan’s books. I want to really make the most of using it. I have recipes that are in both my grandmother’s and mother’s handwriting and they are both now passed on so they really bring a smile to my face and a tear to my eye.I’ve decided that this year…I’m going to take more time in making things nicer for myself and to take the time to enjoy it than just getting it done in order to have it over and finished with. Doing the task should be part of the fun…don’t ya think? What are you all planning for this weekend? Sue…what are you planning on doing?
    FOSB 4~Ever! ~ Doreen ~

    • sbranch says:

I’m REDECORATING! For “winter!” You have a fun plan!

    • I also agree that doing a task no matter how mundane should be done with a song in your heart and knowing that when it is finished the accomplishment should be your reward?? Also, drinking your favorite tea or beverage of choice is part of the process and makes the job go a little easier….This weekend we will start by getting the outdoor decorations put away since IN is talking mild temps. in the 50’s vs the 14 we just went through?? Odd weather this Winter isn’t it?? I think we will just relax and enjoy our kitties and put something great like a sirloin beef roast in the crockpot and just let the weekend unfold. Hope everyone takes out time to just reflect on what truly is important in your life….once you have done that then everything else is just part of the journey….wishing everyone a smooth ride!!!

  88. Trish says:

Thought I would send the latest Simon’s Cat image! Nothing says “New Years” more than kitties tearing up a home! 😀

  89. Jack says:

Sue, as a casual observing, guy type — it’s amazing to see this togetherness being generated and expressed by so many ladies from your stories about the simplest things in life and everyday living. Apparently there is a powerful instinctive demand within women for expressing warmth and purpose — which inspires additional strength of purpose in identifying with coping on an everyday basis …… with all these hundreds of comments arriving, day in and day out, there is not a word of negativity ……. no one uses this forum to express their dissatisfaction ……or concerns, it’s a simple unspoken understanding of a fundamental view shared by all that comment on your stories “of stuff” which provide the inspirational motivation for focus and purpose that I see happening here. Your blog provides a “house” for everyone to visit. Keep up the good work, we are proud of you. Dad

    • sbranch says:

What a sweetie pie thing to say Dad! I love our “house” and especially because you’re in it! XOXO

      • Joan Lesmeister says:

Well no wonder you have such beautiful words flowing out of you and onto paper Susan, you have a genetic predisposition! Lovely comments Jack, for your lovely daughter. And, the reason I spend so much time on this blog is because of the positivity (good word?), no negativity! xo

  90. Karyl Dawn says:

Happy 2012 Susan!!! Thank You for writing this post… I truly needed this as I am all grown up and no real path chosen. Unemployed and not feeling it! You are a great inspiration and enjoy your blog so much. I too am the oldest sister and nice to meet another kindred spirit!
Love Tea and it is National Hot Tea Month!!!! Enjoyed reading of all the different kinds!
Usually have the Christmas Decor put away along with watching Rose Bowl Parade, but decided to wait for the 12th day of Christmas and the Epiphany and enjoy the Season a little bit longer this year!!!
Looking forward to all the New Year holds!!!

  91. Nnacy Jo says:

    SUSAN,
Does anyone outside of family friends and the cats know what your next book is about?? I know I will be first in line to buy it as soon as its out there.

Love the tea pot with all the hearts….but better than that your attitude about making a mistake…we all do it!

    • sbranch says:

Love the quote “A finished person is a boring person!” I will never be boring! 🙂 At least this is what I’m telling myself!

      • Ruth Wartick says:

        Susan,
Thanks very much for all of the lovely tea talk! You have given me encouragement to put away the Christmas decor (now that Epiphany is truly over) and plan a tea party next month! My daughter gave me your beautiful book on sweets for Christmas, so that she provide lots of ideas.
God be with and lead you as you dig and delve into 2012!
        Blessings,
        Ruth

  94. Always enjoy reading your fun e-mail. My cousin Laura got me started on your creations, which I enjoy. Like someone said earlier you were created to do this. I just got through speaking with my friend Jan that I gave your “Love” book to when she was married about 5 years ago as part of her wedding present; and then saw the e-mail about the book, which I have looked for and cannot find anywhere. I would enjoy it sooo much. Coincidence as I have not spoke with my friend in a long while and then here is the post about the book. My nieces 17th birthday is today and I am almost done taking down all of the ornaments on my Christmas tree. Always enjoy the lights so much that I keep a few lights around on an indoor wreath and also have branch lights on the mantel to feel festive. Happy New Year to you in 2012!

Funny, just the other night I was awoke by the light in the backyard… couldn’t figure it out… FINALLY got up to check what was going on… and it was the BIG beautiful MOON! Then today read about YOUR Moon… wonder if we were seeing the same one! Funny … Thanks for your insights! Love them~ Anna

In the midst of dreary January, you have perked me up with Valentines!!! You are the best!! I almost think I can be as creative as you are! ALMOST!!

  99. Deb S. says:

    Susan,

I’m enjoying all of Jack’s adventures. I don’t know if it’s just coincidence but the last few times I’ve brought Willard up and he appears, my cat, Elizabeth Bunny, jumps up and paws at the screen. She is an alpha mischief maker, maybe she see’s a connection! As I’m writing this, she’s laid out on my map of the Vineyard as I have been planning our Mom/Daughter girl trip in June. Any advice for a casual off-the beaten path picnic on the island? Heal quick wishes to Jack…he will be up and running in no time.

Keep us updated on Jack… E.Bunny is looking for his next cameo 🙂

  100. Bonita McGonagill says:

    Sue –
I thought of you as we were taking the train to Portland for Christmas. I had never ridden the train before, and we had a great time. We saw areas of the country that we wouldn’t normally get to see while relaxing in our seats. Much better than taking the plane and going through security. Hope you and Joe had a great holiday and we get to see you in 2012.
    Love,
    Bonita

    • sbranch says:

Hi Bonita! How nice to see you here! So happy to hear about your train trip . . . they are pretty wonderful! Hope to see you too!
