THE CARE AND FEEDING OF DREAMS

Isn’t the New Year the perfect time to talk about dreams???  Oh yes! Musica

Be your own little harbor.

Bubble baths are perfect for dreaming . . .

Nap with kitty . . .

Spend time with best friends . . .

Go on a date . . .

Wish on stars . . .

Spread sunshine in your own inimitable way . . .

Make hot chocolate for someone you love . . .♥

Get some exercise . . .

Hug somebody . . .

Write down your dreams.

I have a word to say about this one, because dreams need to come out of the clouds and down to earth before you can get your hands on them.  When I moved into my first little house on the island, (Holly Oak, in the photo in the post below), I didn’t know what my dreams were. I was flailing around in life at the time (even more than usual) and dreams were just too BIG; they were like infinity; I couldn’t begin to choose one; I couldn’t even bring them into focus.  I knew what I didn’t like about my life; I could go on all day long about that.  But the question, “What do you want?” was almost impossible to answer.  I was lucky because I ran into someone who taught me.

I’ll tell you what I learned; it’s such an easy little thing to do; you will probably read this and think, that can’t work. But what better time to go looking for your dreams (or even just remind yourself of them) than the first day of the new year!  Doing this was the first step I took toward writing my first book.  And it starts with the easy part: just get out a piece of paper and write down ten or twelve things in your life that you don’t like.   Such as: I hate my job; I’m too fat; I’m alone too much; I hate my relationship with my brother; I hate the paint in the living room; I hate it that I don’t (fill in the blank: learn to quilt, write a book, practice the piano, learn French, get a kitty, go to England) ; whatever it is, just write it all down.  Now rewrite your list but change it all to choices:  I choose to have a new job; I choose to lose weight; I choose to invite someone to tea; I choose to improve my relationship with my brother; I choose to repaint the living room; I choose to get a kitty.  Notice how just reading those words unfurrows your brow?  Your dreams come into focus, they become smaller, easier to reach, possible; the kind of dreams that give you the life you truly want. It removes the negativity and puts in the true power of YU.  Voila, you now know your dreams.  Knowing is the beginning. Then it’s a series of small steps: to write a book, first you get out a piece of paper; to get a kitty, look up the number of your local animal shelter . . .

Here’s someone’s dream coming true . . . A lovely little video that always makes me cry.

Vanna came out already this morning, half asleep but still more beautiful than a person should ever be in the morning … I almost don’t know why I let her live here!  But she comes in handy for the correct pulling of a name, with the proper flourishes and glamour such a moment should have. Who else wears high heeled satin slippers with little feathers blowing around on the toes and no socks on a freezing winter day?  No one.

She took her time, carefully going to the bottom of the hat, digging around touching them all,  feeling for the “warm” one, as she put it . . . she apparently found what she wanted, and handed it over to me, before taking her tea back to bed for extra dreaming . . .

Before I announce the winner of my first book, Heart of the Home, and before we really get going on this new year, I just want to tell you what a PLEASURE it’s been getting to know all of you this last year.  Connecting with you this way has been beyond my wildest dreams!  Thank you for your lovely comments, for being my girlfriends, and for loving the little things in life.

Life is better with kindred spirits . . . MUSICA

Now, please help me to congratulate our winner, DEBRA (who has a daughter named AMY G. — if you see this Amy, tell your mom to check her email!) I wrote Debra this morning to let her know she needs to make a little more room on her bookshelf!  When she emails me back with her address, I’ll sign her book, and off it will go!

And now my friends, off I go, back to the little awake-dream I’m in every day, writing this, our, book.  I was at Beatrix Potter’s on Christmas Day!!!  It was so beautiful!  I am so enjoying imagining myself taking you there . . . I also designed the cover and chose a title . . . I think maybe one of you suggested it . . . someone did!  Anyway, it fit perfectly, it’s called, A Fine Romance.

Love you!  Happy Happy New Year! xoxo

What a lovely New Year’s post Susan~ Thank you for always being so encouraging, and inspiring. I think many of us feel it’s maybe too late to start something new, but never! A friend gave me a journal a couple of years ago, and on the cover it say’s, “It’s never too late to be something you might have been.” I also have a dear friend who after many years of nursing, took her first art class in her mid 50’s. She’s been a beautiful artist for over 20 years now. Then, there’s you, and your lovely blog. I’m so glad to add you to my list of beautiful women who continue to inspire me.~ Happy New Year dear friend, may it be your most wonderful year yet!~

What a perfect post to read to start the new year. I love your words, your quotes, your inspiration and your artwork. My grandfather used to say this and then my mom picked it up and would say “keep reaching for the stars”….so I love that last picture. Here’s a link to a post I wrote and you’ll see why this meant so much to me. Thank you for sharing. olycamp09.wordpress.com/2012/02/01/her-words-to-me/

  12. Darlene says:

Happy New Year Susan and everyone! I love the ease of making the list and being able to see it rather than floating around in my mind! My heart is heavy… the having a better relationship part is very important to me…..don’t know how to make that happen without the desire on both parts. I will do my best and perhaps a prayer or two from the girlfriends will help. xoxo

  13. Marsha MacLean says:

    Dear Susan,
How perfect to be reading your blog today here in Scotland, where I have spent the last two weeks with wonderful people…my late husband’s family, who I’m proud to call MY family as well. Your visit to England was such an inspiration and I can’t wait to be one of the first to read the new book! In the meantime, I visited Emma Bridgewater’s shop here in Edinburgh, watched the torchlight procession down to Princes Street, and have been taking pictures of houses everywhere!
I love the advice you’ve given here and am going to begin this new year as a new phase in my search to narrow down my dreams. Thank you so much for all your sweet words this past year. Bless you!
    Marsha

    • Libby Pasztor (Grayslake, IL) says:

HAPPY HAPPY NEW YEAR and BIG OL’ CONGRATS to Debra!! As a recent “winner” of a Susan Branch giveaway, I know that you will sooooo excited and what a wonderful way to start off the new year!!! SOOO GOOD!! Thank you Susan for this beautiful post. I really need to take this to heart. I was thinking that I need to get to know ME.. now… It has only taken me 58 years to come to that conclusion, but I think it is time.. I think I know me, but I also think that I haven’t given much thought to MY dreams lately and that 2013 is the perfect opportunity to start the process. Thanks for all you do. It is my pleasure to have this wonderful blog to come to and connect with all these amazing people. I appreciate that you are so very willing to give of your time and talents to this undertaking. Let’s all enjoy the “flip of the page” as I excitedly get out my new calendars!!! Again, Happy, Healthy, Wonderfully Exciting New Year to you and yours and all the Girlfriends out there!

  23. jeannine leonard says:

Such inspiration to start the new year. Sometimes what we need to hear and put into our lives comes from places we never expect. I thank you for that.
Just put the pork and sauerkraut in the roaster. Our meal every New Year’s Day. It is because a pig pushes their snout forward when they eat, while chickens push backward. We do want to move forward in our lives this year.
Getting ready to watch the best parade after Macy’s of course. The Rose Bowl Parade with all the wonderful floats and flowers and horses. College football this afternoon and then the girls will be getting ready to go back to school tom.
Have a Happy New Year and I for one cannot wait for you to finish this book of yours. Happy reading in our future.

    • sbranch says:

I, for two, agree with you! 🙂

    • Chris Wells from West Texas says:

So that’s why we eat pork and sauerkraut for New Years? I never knew that all these years! Since moving to Texas, I have added black eye peas to the menu (don’t know why we eat those either?) Oh well…here’s to GOOD LUCK in 2013.

      • Hello Chris, black eyed peas are for “wealth” I’m almost 99% sure since my Mothers’ family is from the south and have done that for years and years. We also put a dime in the peas and whomever found it was wished wealth for the New Year. Now, the sauerkraut is for “health”…I hope I have that correct. Happy 2013!!

        • Chris Wells from West TX says:

Health & wealth…I should have the New year covered! Thanks Deborah and Happy New Year! Chris

  24. Snap says:

Many Happy New Year Dreams to you, too!

  25. Rhonda D. says:

Susan, this post is the best thing that could happen to me this New Year’s Day. It is soo inspiring! I think we all feel somewhat inspired on the first day of the new year, but this post put the icing on the cake…gives us something concrete to work with. Thank you for giving so much of yourself and your life to us over the past year. You keep us going when the going gets tough, and when we’re in our happy place as well. Again, a very Happy New Year to you and your family, and to all the girlfriends too. God bless each and everyone of us in 2013!

    • Rhonda D. says:

Congratulations to Debra for winning this beautiful book. I have this book, and I know she’ll treasure it forever. I can’t think of a better way to start off the New Year than this. Happy Cooking Debra!

    • Judy Young says:

Debra, your comments are how I feel exactly and you wrote them perfectly! Susan and Joe, please continue to bless us with your stories, ideas, creativity, books, photos, products and prose…you are the best! I love having you to come home to every day, whether there is a new post or not. You just complete my day!

My husband is preparing the black-eyed peas with bacon and shallots and it smells so good. Back to reality and work tomorrow, but 2013 is going to be very special, and I love your comments on how to make those goals/resolutions! become a reality. Thank you for inspiring me! Happy New Year to all!

  30. Krista Wilson says:

    Susan,
Thank you for such an encouraging post as the new year begins! I used to journal quite regularly, but let the busyness of life crowd out that little pleasure. Well, today I’m picking up the journal again and writing down my dream list first thing.

Blessings to you on this New Year’s Day and the whole year through!

P.S. I am so anxious for your new book! I hope your publisher planned on printing a lot — I have a feeling it’s going to fly off the shelves 🙂

So, I am off to get some exercise in the snowy woods, then to write down my dream and then perhaps the napping with the kitty might be nice! Take Care

  35. Minette says:

    Susan.
I am nearly without words to express my delight and appreciation of your New Year’s post. It is exactly what I needed to hear today and the Susan Boyle video brought me to tears again as well as it remnds us all of so many of life’s lessons that need to be remembered. I think so many of us begin to lose sight of our own dreams as we get older and just need a reminder now and then that it is okay to still aspire to a higher level of satisfaction and achievement no matter how old you are. You continue to be such a bright beacon of inspiration for all of us. Happy New Year to you and Joe and hope that 2013 will bring as much of the happiness and joy to you both that you bring to others. The anticipation of the publication of the England diary already makes it a banner year!

  36. Lauri says:

Happy New Year Susan! Thanks for such an inspiring way to start the new year. My Grandma (now 95 yrs old) is an example of “it’s never too late” to make your dreams come true. In her 40’s, after raising a family of 5 children, she bought her own “Better Homes & Garden” store. My sibs and I had such fun playing there as kids. She would give us all the samples and we would decorate our shoebox houses! In her 50’s she learned how to paint which brought her (and us) such joy. I’ve learned so much from her about enjoying the little and big moments of life. I love New Year’s Day and the fresh canvas it brings. Thanks for the encouraging words to start off 2013. Enjoy your day Susan!

  37. Julia says:

Susan, Susan, Susan, how do you do it? Did God give you extra hours in the
day? You inspired me to get back to my quilting that I learned from my
Grandmother at age 12. I’ve had some detours. Time to get back. Thanks
for the uplifting messages. I’m grateful that my favorite quilt shop included
your blog in their email. Happy New Year to you, Joe and the fuzzy babies.
P/S: I got some S.B. things for Christmas but I guess I’ll have to go on
a hunt for that first book!

  38. Kim says:

Wishing you, Joe and the Kitties a Happy, healthy, peaceful 2013, Susan. Thank you for your uplifting words for the beginning of the New Year!

  39. What lovely and hope-full messages this morning! “Make something you can GIVE AWAY…” Especially love that so much – when we start asking ourselves how can we give, and what do we have to give, that helps bring specific dreams into clear focus. And then when we actually do give, that act opens up new space for dreams to become real. And “Put FUN on the calendar…” so nice – giving includes being kind to our very own selves, treating ourselves with generosity too. Happy New Year, Susan, and best wishes from rural Maine. (Over a foot of snow here, I am painting, it is so beautiful outside!)

  40. Jackie says:

Happy New Year! *cheers* What a delightful, beautiful, and inspiring way to begin my New Year! Thank you so much and God bless!!!

  41. Janet OC says:

What a wonderful way to start the New Year – fill it with dreams! May you have many beautiful dreams in the coming year Susan 🙂
    Janet xoxo

  42. Julie Marie says:

Yay, congratulations to Debra!!… how nice to wake up and start the first day of the new year with a fun post from you… I love each and every word… at the top of the post you talk about making plans, anticipation… my sweet daddy passed away several years ago at 91 years young… he would always “make plans” and very often order something little for himself in the mail… new handkerchiefs perhaps, maybe a special book… just something small… but he said if you always have something to look forward to, even a little package in the mail… life is good… I do that myself now… and today, I will start writing my plans in my new “Days” book… I love all of the things you have listed to do… especially the wishing on a star and breakfast in bed!… Happy New Year… I CAN NOT wait for your new book… THAT is my anticipation now!… much love, xoxo Julie Marie PS Is Jack sleeping in today?…

  43. Peggy says:

hAPPY new year to the heart of your home from the heart of mine

  44. Miss Pat in Indiana says:

Happy New Year to you Susan, Joe, Jack and Girl Kitty. My cat, August, is standing in front of the computer screen so this may have to be edited. I think she is looking for pictures of Jack. We just returned from spending Christmas in Westport, MA and I thought of you many times. Indiana was being covered in snow while Mass. was pretty and green until the last Sat. but even that snow was out of the way as we flew home. I love the area where you live, even if I have not had the chance to visit your island. I feel like I have been there from all the lovely pictures you post. One of thse years we will get on the ferry and enjoy the island.
BTW, I didn’t enter the last thingy as I have a copy of “The Heart of the Home” that I bought in the late 1980’s or maybe early 1990’s that you signed for me in 2004 at Conner Prairie. The cover is beginning to yellow, that’s how long I have had it.
To all the girlfirends that have not had the pleasure of meeting you in person,
Susan is just the same in person as the way she writes. Friendly, outgoing, funny, delightful. Don’t miss a chance to meet and talk to her. You will treasure the time with her as I do always.

  45. Judy J. from W.Warwick, RI says:

And a Happy New Year to you too! Your words were worth waiting all week for. I mean to take them to heart. Thanks.

And now – I will change my mindset – and somehow, someway – I Choose To Visit England & Wales!

    • sbranch says:

Yessss! 🙂 And even if it takes four years, those years will pass anyway (that’s how think about it!).

  53. Jamie...Austin, TX says:

Back in about 1989 or so, I went to the Country Peddler Show with my sister and came across the cookbook lady. She introduced me to Heart of the Home by Susan Branch, and there, across the pages, were my dreams, too. It’s been a love affair ever since! Thank you, Susan! I’m grateful for finding your blog this past year and connecting with my kindred spirits. Happy 2013!

PS: It rarely snows in Austin, but we were in Dallas for Christmas where it snowed all afternoon Christmas Day. Pure magic!

  54. Ann Y. - Adamstown, PA says:

Happy New Year ! What a great post to get our dreams out of our mind and into our life ! Up early – my sweet husband had eye surgery on Friday and I am the “nurse” – and made a list of my dreams/goals for 2013. Then we had pancakes and mimosas …getting a head start on making this year the best ever. Reading your blog gives fuel to so many of the things I want to do…thank you ! Wishing you a year ahead with time to slow down, enjoy, and savor. God bless !

  55. tana G says:

Happy New Year Susan and Joe! I have decided that I want to make the outside of my home look like a house you would take a picture of if you were driving by. A very doable dream!

  56. "Auntie" says:

    Super post, Susan…

    And Congratulations to your winner!

Gentle hugs for the New Year,
    “Auntie”

  57. Deb Surman from Illinois says:

Happy New Year to you, Joe and the kitties! Time to put the kettle on for some tea and cinnamon toast while watching the Tournament of Roses Parade. I spent 15 years as a floral designer, so this is one of my favorite traditions. I’m still amazed when they show all those volunteers and the hard work put in to decorating those amazing floats. I hope they all realize how much their hard work and talent are appreciated. You can’t get too much beauty in life, can you? Also, thanks Susan….now I’m humming ” A Fine Romance” and can’t get it out of my head! I just love when Fred sings that to Ginger, don’t you? Warm wishes for a delightful day!

    • sbranch says:

I love the videos I’ve seen of those people putting the flowers on the floats! Amazing!! I’ve never been..have you? I’m just wondering if you can smell the flowers when you’re in the audience?

      • pat addison (cave junction,OR) says:

yes you can. and it smells heavenly!!! there is nothing like the Rose parade, all those beautiful floats covered in all the flowers of the world and to see the creativity of the designers and the volunteers put together so neatly and beautifully……wish i could go again…well some year i just might!!! care to come come along??? just popped in to say Happy New Year everyone, and now that the parade is over, the tea has been drunk and the cinnamon toast devoured and enjoyed, its time for a nap, we had a late night last night. nighty night everyone, Happy New Year and congrats to the winner. hugs….. 🙂

  58. Marcia A. Sherman says:

I think I speak for many of us when I say there is always that teeny tiny twinge of sadness when it is not my name. It only lasts a split second because of your happiness for the winner, we fall in line with your generosity and goodwill. Maybe next time – and huge congrats to Debra-mother-of-Amy.
I choose to be healthier this year, and to not suffer fools. Last interview I saw with Shirley MacLaine, she said: if she cannot avoid them, she just zones out on boorish people, thinks of other (good) thoughts, and nods her head at what she hopes is the right time. I like it!
Happy happy New Year to all of you there at the Vineyard.

    hi Susan,

You are truly an inspiration to me and I just needed to explain why…
Tough year for a lot of folks, God knows…and a
tough year for me- left my corporate product design/development career behind at the beginning of Dec 2011 to take care of my husband, post his knee surgery, and also dealing with his cancer that returned…he is a full time pastor and I wanted to be the one to take him back and forth from CT to Dana Farber in Boston for a “trial”- ( which failed in March after several months of the trial…) Basically I took an “early” retirement…couldn’t do the corporate frenetic, AND commute from CT to RI each day ( put 155,000 miles on my new car in a year and a half- trashed my new car!) AND be a support to my husband. To make matters worse, we were flooded out of our home in late summer and moved 5 times…most recently into this old (1885) , needy ‘SHORT SALE” Victorian, we just purchased & which, btw, has been a money pit trying to make livable- you might say that my so-called “retirement” is in this house…anyway, it has been a rough year…the blessings have been my faith-my family, and,
thankfully, my husband in now in remission from traditional chemo…praise God from whom all blessings flow!!!

However, I have been feeling diminished- yes- that’s the word- since I think so much of my identity was related to my career…anyway, your blogs throughout this year have been the “lightness” that I truly needed. It isn’t that I haven’t been active-I’ve worked out, I’ve gardened, I run the Sunday School program for our church and I volunteer with various church events and outreaches-I am blessed with
family, though they are scattered… but I needed that “Calgon, take me away” moment (do you even know what I am referring to re Calgon?!) every once in a while, and that’s what your blog did for me this year- it took me away…quite literally- to happier recollections, happier times, new “food for thought”…it just lifted my spirits…

When I was feeling somewhat overwhelmed last winter, I would pull out one of your books, or go on line and see what the latest Susan Branch blog would be up to…I would email my friends to be sure to log onto it- because, it inspired and it always lifted my spirits and made me smile….so, THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!! And your blog today, well, it reminds me of all the “hands on” things that I couldn’t do when I had my demanding career- that I always intended to do or do BETTER than before…knitting, for example…I have taken that up again, but have never learned certain techniques—well NOW might be that time… and my embroidery machine…for crying out loud it has been nothing more than an ornament since I bought it a few years ago-there was no time for it… Now, today, I am determined to devote some time to getting to know it… maybe even try to dream or envision a “hand’s on” business down the road…Ruth Gordon used to say, when she was asked about her age ( and I think she was in her seventies by then) that she was a “seventeen year old” kid inside…I always liked that.
I pray for continued good health and blessings to you…you just keep on doing what you do, Susan Branch, and we will keep on smiling….

Happy New Year, Susan! A perfect post, Now off to watch the Rose parade on TV with doggie and a cup of coffee.

  61. Wendy says:

Happy New Year Susan. So happy to find you wonderful post this morning. I am ready with pen and paper to jot down all your inspirational ideas to get me moving in the direction of my dreams this year. Your books and calendars have been a big part of my life for many years, now I get to “hear” your voice through your blog. Your genuine love for all of us girlfriends is wonderful. Thank you dear friend for giving so much of yourself.

  62. Lee Rose says:

    Happy New Year everyone!

Susan, I was so excited when I hung your calender this morning. I read every word in January, but didn’t peek ahead.

Thank you for the inspiration. It was just what I needed.

  63. Ann says:

WOW!! Thank you so much Susan for such a fabulous and inspiring start to the New Year. I wish you and Joe a very happy 2013 filled with blessings. Thank you for sharing yourself with us and I will look forward to more of your ‘food for the soul’ as the year unfolds.
With love from Ann in Thame xx

  64. Pam Fortune says:

    Hi Susan
I already wished you a Happy New Year so I will just say what a marvellous inspiring Blog. I have been wondering for a while whether I should think of a new direction but I am not sure what, so 2013 maybe the start of something new. It is interesting that you used Iris Murdoch’s quote about having lots of little treats and my daughter Fleur keeps telling me to organise something to look forward to. So, I am starting with an organised day out each month, where I shall catch a bus to who knows where? So that makes 12 adventures to look forward to for I always use my car. I will keep you posted about my adventures and where they lead me. Best wishes for 2013 adventures for you and the girlfriends.

    • sbranch says:

I realized at one time that we put our dentist appointments on the calendar, but sometimes forgot to put fun on it. That didn’t seem quite right! May your fun outweigh your dentist appointments! 🙂

      • Pam Fortune says:

It will because I have false teeth! I am seriously thinking that I will catch a bus and try, by changing buses, and eventually arriving in Harrogate, a spa town in North Yorkshire. I shall then probably be ready for lunch at the famous Betty’s cafe which is the creme de la creme of cafes. But who knows it may change but I will keep you informed.

  65. Cindy says:

‘Tis the New Year! My focus is to develop a more thankful heart this year….and in so doing, I decided to drop you a note to tell you how thankful I am that God made YOU! Just the way you are – with all your uniqueness, quirks, playfulness. I am thankful for the life you have chosen to live even when life was not so wonderful. I am thankful that you chose to share your life with all of us out here in the blogsphere…..sitting in our robes and jammies, enjoying your life that helps us put a new slant on ours. Thank you for helping direct our focus to the little things (a.k.a. “smooches from God”) that tend to be overlooked and under-appreciated: the snowy watches of the night, the smell of freshly ground coffee, the love of a dear pet, the friend who’s always been there. I could go on and on. But I realized this morning that you help us see what is to enjoy and be thankful for in OUR lives and how “perspective” makes all the difference in a life. You are a dear and we are blessed to know you even in an e-mail sort of way!

  66. Winnie Nielsen says:

Susan– Happy New Year to you and Joe and thank you for so many wonderful posts and inviting us girlfriends to share your life ‘s adventures! This post was just so perfect today for me in many ways. My Dad used to say that you can’t build castles in the sky until you put something on the ground first. What I like about your phrasing is that we CAN make those first steps on the ground by simply rewriting the script from I hate, to, I choose to. It does sound so simple but we both know, it is hard to do and it takes time to develop that ability to understand about writing our own paradigm . Your words and pictures are so encouraging. Today, when I hung up my new 2013 Susan Branch calendar, I was reminded of what a blessing it was to me to find your blog this year and reconnect to your story that started for me years ago with your first books!! It has been awesome!!

Congratulations to Debra — this will be a book she will read over and over because, like all of your books, they are beautiful, inspirational, and fun to read 100 times over!!

  67. Eszter says:

    Dear Susan!

What can one say upon reading your latest musings? Not much except THANK YOU!

Have a blessed, healthy and happy New Year!

hours with your blog and your book and your encouragement. You are
truly blessed with your gifts. Thanks so much and I look forward to
reading; your blog throughout the year. love marilyn

  69. Happy New Year Susan! Your words inspire many…your words inspire ME. You model for us a way of living in a state of wonder and appreciation and kindness. I am opening my eyes to see the wonder and beauty right here, in my little life. Have a blessed day (and year!) there on your beautiful Island (I visted MV in September and LOVED IT). ~Lina~

  71. Mary in Phoenix says:

Happy New Year to all! Watching the Rose Parade just like I have for over 50 years and feeling a bit nostalgic as I remember the years we slept on the sidewalks of Pasadena to see the floats up close and personal … an unbelievable sight, and incredible fragrance as they pass by! Thank you, Susan, for your boundless blessings, infinite inspiration and endless encouragement. All the best for a memorable 2013. “Write it on your heart that every day is the best day of the year.” ~Ralph Waldo Emerson

  72. Sherry Palla says:

  74. Debbie Johnson says:

    Happy New Year Susan!
I always get so excited when I see a new Willard or a new adventure on your blog. You are always uplifting and a JOY to us girl friends. And this one for the new year is no exception. What a perfect way to start out on this brand spankin’ new year…dreaming and stretching for the stars.
I am going to do just that.
    Thank you!
    Love you,
    Debbie

  75. Sheryle Towle says:

Dear Susan, Happy New Year to you & Joe. I just took down my 2012 SB calendar & hung my 2013. My daughter buys me your calendar every Christmas. Thank you for inspiring us all; you always make me happy & you are always in my 1952 kitchen. Can’t let a day go by without you. Enjoy your winter on MV & keep warm! My chair is quite close to our woodstove here in Maine. Now…I must start my journal! Fondly, Sheryle

  76. Peggy Cooper says:

Oh Susan, it’s going to be a very good year – I just know it. I opened my eyes this morning to see the sweet little face of my kitty Katniss that I rescued from the alley, who is getting so big and healthy. I stayed in bed a few extra minutes thinking about New Years resolutions, and deciding I wouldn’t be writing any of those, but instead would write about what I would like to do – the dreams I wanted to come true. I’ve been anxiously awaiting today to use my new calendar and book of days, and hoping you’d have a nice long new post this morning. And a wonderful new post it is – just perfect. It’s very cold today, with a light dusting of snow on the ground, so a perfect day for staying in and writing and dreaming and cooking and eating and being grateful for this wonderful life.

Thank you for keeping us so inspired – and Happy New Year to you and yours, and to all the girlfriends.

  77. Melina Bush says:

Always the right words, pictures, and music. The video of Susan Boyle made me cry once again, the words you spoke made me seek out a place to dream without limits. I’m reminded of a John Denver song where he sings “…and dreams don’t cost a thing.” Wish I could remember which song it is, maybe I’ll listen to his CD’s again today.
I’ve loved sharing 2012 with you and look sooo forward to ’13 and the new book.

  78. Sharon Byars says:

Your posts this past year have made my days better. You are a true inspiration! Happy New Year and looking forward to your book. You are telling us to “go forward” and do not be “self limiting”. Every day is a treasure. Now off for a nature walk on the beach to count my blessings.

  79. nancy jo says:

    Hi Susan,
I hung up my new Susan calendar this morning, and got out my ‘DAYS’ book, also a Susan. Thank you. NOW if I could only have a Kitty! First time in my life I have been without one. But, it seems I have developed an allergy, so to have one would require a truck load of kleenex. Oh so sad. I’m ok now.
Looking soooo forward to the new book.
    Nancy Jo

  80. Mary Nolan says:

Thank you for being so inspiring Susan!!! Wishing you the grandest, most blessed 2013!

  81. Kerry S. from San Pedro, CA says:

Happy 2013 to you, you, the kitties and all the visitors to “our” blog!! Susan – what a great idea – just reword a negative to create a positive! What a great idea to work on this first week of a new year!
Just wanted to compliment you on the illustrations on this years wall calendar! I have all my stickers out to add to the calendar but not so many needed as I discovered when I turned to each new month – Susan had been there first!! You must have peeked at my past calendars! 😉
Watching the Rose Parade without having to take husband to airport to go to work is one of the best ways to start this year! Have a wonderful day everyone! XOXO

  82. Denni from MN says:

May each day of 2013 begin with the same Joyful feelings after reading your blog on this first day of the year! Susan, I’ve been anticipating what you would bring us today and it’s every bit, plus, the talent you share with us each time. May you and Joe, Girl, and Jack have a very Happy New Year! As I go to work later today, I’ll keep in mind those dreams of what’s ahead in life. Congratulations to Debra with winning!

  83. Sara NW Georgia says:

Happy New Year!!!!!! Time to hang up the new calendar! Thank you so much for sharing that Susan Boyle video. I love her! However, that was the first time I have seen that video and it did bring me to tears!

  84. judy c says:

Would love to start the New Year with this suggestion – what a great way to develop my dreams. Wishing you a year of wonderfullness – full of dreams and joy… judy c

  85. Susan says:

Thank you Susan. I SO, SO enjoyed reading your dreaming thoughts on this, the very first day of a brand spanking New Year! Who taught you, may I ask?Joe,perhaps? If that’s true, he needs an extra good hug today. Happy New Year!

    • sbranch says:

It wasn’t Joe because I didn’t meet him for probably another five years…it was just a passing person, guardian angel type.

      • Marianne in Hidden Meadows, SoCal says:

“Guardian Angel” — Yes!!! Isn’t it amazing how they just seem to pop up when you need them most, and we often don’t realize they were a true angel until much later? And sometimes we’re the angels and may never know it. Loved your post today, Susan. And another “It’s never too late” inspiration for me is Grandma Moses who I’ve heard didn’t start painting until around age sixty, which means I have two more years to get started 🙂 Well, it’s 10:30 AM here in SoCal, and YIKES!! – I’m still in my PJ’s. But that’s OK, I’ll just make today a quiet “dream day”. Thank you Susan for inspiring us to sometimes, just dream…..

        HAPPY NEW YEAR, GIRLFRIENDS!!!!

      • SusanY in NE Atlanta says:

All of this is so interesting …. I am trying to help a young friend who reminds me so very much of you. She is a very talented artist but newly divorced after spending the last six years putting her ex thru medical school. At 35 she thinks she is too old… Truly the worst part is she cannot find a job in this terrible economy. I encourage her as much as I can, but would welcome any other advice you can offer

        • sbranch says:

Poor thing. You could tell her that my divorce was final when I was 34 — I forgot to plan for any kind of career, I was too busy being a happy housewife. I also felt old, which probably comes from having the thing you thought your life was based on, die. But five years later, when I was 39, my first book came out, and I met Joe the same year. Tell her nothing ever stays the same! I look at my ex husband now as my guardian angel.

          • Mary S. says:

Thank you for this blog on this lovely New Year’s Day! Hearing “Auld Lang Syne” always makes me cry, and so does the Susan Boyle video! I’m feeling a little blue anyway, as my daughter and my grandchildren left on the plane this morning, so tears come easily.
            I love you, Susan!
From Mary S. in Fresno, CA

          • sbranch says:

            xoxo Mary, Happy New Year.

          • Sylvia WA State says:

Now that got my attention! I’ve always thought of my three kids as guardian angels/teachers — and that is true. All lovely adults now. Hmmmmm. The erstwhile runaway father/ex as guardian angel? I’m going to give that notion a try. Maybe it’s a cure for low back pain :-). Worth a try.

          • sbranch says:

            🙂

  86. Kerry S. from San Pedro, CA says:

    P.S Congratulations to Debra!
I love the name of the new book too! Like others have mentioned I’ll be humming the song the rest of the day! 😉
Thank you for being a continuing positive inspiration Susan!

  87. Jen Y says:

I absolutely love Susan Boyle. I never tire of seeing this clip & it brings me to tears before she even begins singing, knowing what’s about to happen.

I recently discovered your blog though I’ve been a fan of your books for a very long time. I’ve spent quite a bit of time browsing your archives & love your gardens! What treasures! Thanks for sharing with us.

  88. Jeanette says:

    Hi, Susan!

May the coming year overflow your heart with happiness, peace, love, creativity, beautiful memories, the purr of content kitties, wonderful smells wafting from the kitchen, birdies swooping in to regale you in song, a tea kettle always singing, the sweet fragrant smell of flowers in bloom, friends to keep your heart warm and smiles knowing all of us girlfriends love and adore YoU!!!

Happy New Year everyone! Susan, you inspire and cheer us on to be our real selves, whether 17 or 71. It tickles me when you talk about fun outweighing dentist appointments! I so agree! I am looking forward to the Fine Romance book and know it will make me smile and remember that dreams are meant to be lived out here on Planet Earth. Blessings to you and yours!

  90. Jamie from Virginia says:

Happy New Year, Everyone! What a great post today. The lovely painting of the little red-headed girl painting took my breath away……it was ME!!! It has stopped me in my tracks. Did my mother send you a photograph of me? 🙂 Susan, you are such a talented artist……but your true gift is your ability to inspire others, to inspire others to believe in themselves. Thank you.

Love the name of the England Diary. I hope we all have a great New Year!!
    ~ Jamie

  91. Gini says:

Happy New Year Susan! WOW! That Susan Boyle video gives me goosebumps! I had to watch it again just to hear those first few words of the song & see the reactions of the judges & audience. I’ve been thinking about dreams & the start of the new year all week, since Christmas & am seriously planning some small steps that I hope will lead to large changes in my life. Thanks for all the inspiration & joy you have shared with us all. I look forward to your blog in 2013!

Thank you from the bottom of my heart!!!! xoxoxo

  93. Nellie says:

Congratulations – and Happy New Year – to lucky Debra!

This is such an inspiring post, Susan. I wonder how many of us go through life without dreams.

The black-eyed peas are simmering on the stove – in ham broth, this time. Steamed cabbage and cornbread will complete this New Year’s Day “feast.” Come join us!

Sending along the very best wishes to you, Joe, Girl Kitty, and Jack – and all your friends and family – for a Happy New Year full of peace and joy!

    xo Nellie

Happy New Year, Susan and Joe! Wishing you a whole new year filled with small moments that make your heart sing! Knowing the title makes “our” book feel so real. Can’t wait to read A Fine Romance! Maybe this will be the year that so many Girlfriends have the chance to meet you (and one another!) during a book signing tour. We are truly grateful for all of the love and inspiration you share with all of us!

    Happy New Year, Everyone!
A wonderful, inspiring post to begin the gift of a new year. Thank you, Susan! And the Susan Boyle video is the definition of “dreaming your dreams”…. I get teary-eyed every time I watch it.
    Blessings to you all!

  97. Nancy says:

Happy, Happy New Year Susan & Joe, Girl Kitty & Jack! Your post this morning was just what I needed…it is cold and dreary here and I admit it was becoming my mood…..my mother (almost 99) passed away on Dec. 19th and I have finally had time to reflect after the services, Christmas Open House, out of state family in the house, and Christmas and New Year’s Eve. I am determined to get up, turn on more lights, and do something fun this afternoon. 😉

    • Cathy McC. says:

Proud of you, Nancy, for getting up and getting going! Your mom would be proud, too. Inch by inch , , ,

      • Nancy says:

thank you…..not easy but I’m getting there! 😉

        • Nancy, so sorry to hear about the loss of your Mother. You must feel so blessed to have had her almost 99 years, and I pray that all the special memories you shared with her will give you comfort during this difficult time. Blessings

  98. Karen Saunders says:

Well, here I was, excited to sit and sip my morning coffee and read your ‘new’ blog, (which I had been checking hopefully every day) and there it was!!! And then you made me cry too at the video. I know people read other people’s blogs, even you, but I only read yours. I truly don’t know how you do all you do. Cook, paint, give parties and write your blog. And in the summer you garden!!! (Does Joe know what you look like??) I bet your friends hate it when you’re doing a book, but know that we’re all very thankful. You’ve influenced my life quite a bit. I have an e-book on Amazon…..Check! (one mark off the bucket list) Thanks to your encouragement. Thank you.

    • sbranch says:

It’s true, no one likes it very much when I do a book! 🙂 But I have to! Congratulations Karen!

  99. Carol Maurer from Eureka, CA says:

HAPPY NEW YEAR to you too, Susan and CONGRATULATIONS to Debra!!!! I know she will enjoy the book!

I’m so excited to start this new year! Later on today, I’m going to start taking down the Christmas decorations. Always such a great start to the new year, but a little let down when all has been taken down. That feeling doesn’t last long.

Happy New Year to all the girlfriends out there Susan’s blog land 🙂

    Carol M

    • Cathy McC. says:

I used to have that let-down, too, Carol, so I decided that after I take Christmas decorations down, I put snowmen up — leaving them up til a bit after Valentine’s Day. Many of my snowmen have been homemade by family and friends, so they warm my heart on chilly winter days! Try it, for fun and JOY!

      • Carol Maurer from Eureka, CA says:

Thanks, Cathy for the inspiration. I did that one year as a matter of fact. Really does work. For some reason, I always think Spring is just around the corner. Funny, Winter is just beginning. But, here in Eureka, Ca, the sun can shine a couple times or more a week and you actually can feel the warmth from the sun. As I look outside the window, I’m getting geered up to cut back a few bushes that really need it. Around here, gardening is a ‘year around’ job.

  100. CindyK says:

What a wonderful post for the new year! It gives one lots to think about, and a definite path to take. Thank you for that!
Congratulations to Amy’s mom for winning the awesome book!!
