Winter, Animal Kingdom & Downton

More winter, more animal kingdom, Downton and . . .  MUSICAspring! Not really, just kidding.

phil

Conflicting reports on whether the groundhog saw his shadow or not, abound. So we better enjoy this winter of 2015 while we’ve got it, because we don’t know how long it will last. But we definitely have it now, and boy do we.  Boston got 40 inches of snow in the last seven days.  It’s not as bad here, but more than we remember having before.

squirrels

So we stay hunkered down and enjoy the show . . . because around here it’s mostly animal kingdom. (In fact while I’m writing this, I just saw the turkeys go past the window on their way to the feeders!)

squirrels

Yesterday there were three squirrels chasing each other around the feeders at the same time, up and down the wisteria trunks, over the top of the arbor, vying for space at the feeders, so cute. I could only get two in my lens at once . . .

squirrel play

Wet and snow spattered . . .

Jack watches

Jack’s right there, enjoying the show . . . I put my head right next to his and we watch together . . .

squirrel at feeders

It goes on all day . . .

squirrels on ice

Squirrels making themselves at home . . .

did you see that?

Do you see that?  Are you just going to let them do that?

snow birds

And then, look at the birds waiting their turn on the branches in the background . . .

birds

Love it when I catch them in mid air . . .

snow

There are three feeders and a suet cage outside the kitchen windows  . . . the wall between the windows kind of gets in the way of photos . . . it’s like a giant fish tank for us while we cook or do dishes.  Highly entertaining.

path through the snow

Our house “sounds like an ant farm,” says Blog Daddy, from my description of the paths Joe has dug coming from every door, to the street, to the feeders, the trash area, the barn, and the wood pile . . .

Joe at the wood pile

Joe loves it out there . . . here he’s pulled back the plastic to fill his apple basket with dry firewood. . .

Helping Joe bring in wood

Of course Jack misses nothing . . .

Playtime for Jack

He has a well-rounded day . . .

He loves the fire

He LOVES the fire and will sit and stare at it for hours.  Like mother, like son.

Jackie

I sneak up on him . . .

camera

working on new calendars

. . . and while all this nothing is going on here in Smallville, paint waterI’m working on the Calendars for 2016, asking myself, as usual, on every month, “what would the Girlfriends like to see?” I’m on September of the wall-calendar now . . .

I also have the mini calendar to do, the big blotter, the purse calendar and the little magnet.  I paint and write most of the day.

my paintbrush, doing what comes naturally

wearing them out

I’m wearing out pencils with all the drawing I’m doing.  When they get low, they become “kitchen pencils” ~ they go into the jar in the kitchen ~ as opposed to drawing pencils.

pre-jack

You know how much Jack loves to retrieve pony-tail bands I shoot for him?

jack

He deserves to live forever, one way or another, preferably both. This is me immortalizing Jack.

Jack on the stairs

Because this guy is an original.

He wants it so bad

He could play like this all day everyday.  But I have to get those calendars done!

Girl

Girl has found a new place to sleep.  On the red checked pillows I got at Ikea the last time we were off-island.  But as soon as I come with the camera, she leaves . . . so we are lucky to get this pose from Queen Victoria Girl Kitty.

snowday

And even though it is still like this outside (10 degrees this morning) . . .

hibiscus grows in winter

Upstairs the hibiscus is in full bloom in an east window of the “blue room” — which could also be called “the junk room” . . .

hibiscus

The flowers just keep coming. We don’t do anything but water, and I think this plant is happier here than it was on the porch during the summer.

life is good

And we have a fire everyday . . .  for the sound of crackling and hissing, because it’s warm . . . and to give Jack and me something to zone out on.

Downton Fireplace in the LibraryIf I couldn’t have my own fireplace, this would be my second drinkchoice ~ this one in the Library at Downton Abbey . . . It’s hard to have a favorite room at the Abbey (we’re now such good friends I feel I can call it “the Abbey”), but this and the dining room are my favorite. I think it’s because of the elegant carvings over the black fireplace, but there are also gorgeous red sofas in here, it’s dark and romantic and perfect for “cocktails.”

Mary and Tom and the kidsThis is why I like Lady Mary and Tom together. I know I won’t get my way, because Charles Blake is very charming and he and Mary do have chemistry ~ and maybe there is something wrong with marrying your sister’s widower who used to be the chauffeur.  But times are a’changing, as we are only too well aware, and how about for the children?  I think they would all be perfect together.

Did you watch?  Goodbye Miss Bunting!  Hooray!  I thought maybe she wouldn’t go and screamed OH NO when Tom jumped up to go say goodbye; I hated it when they kissed but then, deep breath of relief, he let her go.  I loved it when Mary said, “Are you happy now?” at dinner. Bye-bye, Miss Bunting, you give Bunting a bad name.

Union Jack bunting

I don’t see why Julian Fellowes didn’t give Tom a perfectly lovely normal feminist to fall for, there had to be one in England at that time ~ they couldn’t all be dinner ruiners.  “Feminist-socialist” does not automatically equal “no manners.”

watercolory flowers

I haven’t mentioned it, but didn’t you love it when Violet was remembering where she met her Russian Prince, the Ball at the “Winter Palace,” and what she wore . . .  “powder-blue velvet with silver lace?”  Made tears in my eyes.  Would have loved to see Violet dancing in that.  Would love to see her being courted by a Prince too. What he might lack in hair laundering I’m sure he would make up for in manners.

Downton Abbey Highclere Castle Series

I’m sure she was beautiful.

Downton Abbey Clothes

She still is, just like her granddaughter.   If nothing else, I would watch for these dresses and what they put in their hair, their jackets and hats.  I love this show!

flowers

Poor Edith.  Someone is going to see her making that phone call in Carson’s office.  Probably Mister dark-circles-under-his-eyes.  Have you noticed that no matter how sick Barrow makes himself, he stays mean and sneaky? No more, but no less than before.  He’s on an even keel when it comes to scheming. You’d think he wouldn’t have the energy for it.  One other thing.  Cora suddenly looks, and acts, like an all-American Girl. Golly!  Poor Robert is confused to the point of needing a time out.  OK, that’s enough, now you tell me, what did you think?

flowers-on-scroll

Bye from cold, icy, wintry, sunny, bright-white Martha’s Vineyard, from Joe, Girl, Jack and me . . . and Smallville, USA. I’m off to get my warm pair of shoes from in front of the furnace!  Be sure to try the Punxsutawney Pudding and Spareribs on the February page of the Calendar, I promise you deliciousness!

  1. Susan ( an Ohio gal in SoCal ) says:

Oh, I need a kitty! My favorite picture here is Jack’s face! And, ARE you going to just let them do that? I’ve noticed before how varied his expressions are. Stay snugged in and enjoy – what else can you do?

  2. Well we aren’t sure what our Candlemas Day forecast is either! We had a proper mixed bag of weather yesterday http://projectbritain.com/year/candlemas.html

I invented a new weather and weather word for yesterday. It is Sleesh ~ your perfectly balanced combination of sleet and slush which we had a plenty yesterday.

Love seeing all your pictures, and everyone has the right idea to sit in front of the fire and I’m sure Joe will be grateful it is lit and warm when he comes back indoors.

Oh, me too! I so wanted Lady Mary to marry Tom; they seem so perfectly matched, but agree, just a little too weird ~~~ in another life, maybe? Time marches on, and so does Ms Bunting!

  3. Lorraine from Westchester Co., NY says:

Loving all the snow – although SO glad to see blue skies and sunshine, even if it IS only 17 degrees outside! Miss my own fireplace, but I don’t think the chimneys of my 1795 house have been cleared since 1895, and wouldn’t dare use any of the three of them (even if they weren’t “boarded” up”). Still, I can dream… Did you happen to see that issue of Victoria magazine (last spring?) when they were showcasing the dresses of the women of Downton Abbey? Lovely!
    Stay warm!
    Lorraine

  4. Pat Mofjeld says:

First of all, I loved your comment about your “junk room”. I think every house needs one of those! Unfortunately in our tiny townhouse, it is a constant battle to keep my “loom room” (I’m a weaver) from turning into a “junk room”…
Re Downtown Abbey, I agree with your comments. I’m so glad to see Miss Bunting go. I noticed the Russian’s hair needs to be “laundered”, too. Really like Charles Blake for Mary–Tom would be good but, yes, kind of strange for her to marry her sister’s husband…Cora definitely was a flirt with her admirer…I am hoping Barrow does himself in before he does any more damage with his scheming, especially to Anna and Bates. I’m guessing this year’s “cliff hanger” in the last episode will be Edith kidnapping Marigold and disappearing in London and a marriage proposal to their niece from the banker she has just met and neither of her parents will be happy with it… We actually bought this year’s DVD but Norm won’t let me watch it ahead… 🙂

    • sbranch says:

Good for Norm, I’m with him. Opening this series by pulling the ribbon veeerrrrry sloooowleeee. You’re right Cora was a flirt, but now maybe Robert won’t take her for granted, I would be SO upset if Joe started telling me my opinion wasn’t worth anything!

      • Pat Mofjeld says:

Yes, I agree…if Norm told me that, there would be fireworks! 🙂

      • Debra Henderson says:

Oh, you girls are killing me! I have no backbone. I couldn’t resist. I bought it and we watched it! All! I will NOT give anything away. Though I am itching to talk to you about it!!! I am sad to read on the net that next season will the last 🙁

        • sbranch says:

NOOOOO. Say it ain’t so. OK, well next season better be a wedding or a baby shower every episode.

        • Mary S. says:

Really?? I heard that this was the last season!!

          • sbranch says:

We get a sixth season next year and unless there’s a last minute reprieve, I guess that will be the end . . . so there’s time to make everything Happily Ever After; fingers crossed.

    • Deb W says:

A weaver!? I’m a spinner! And I live in a townhouse too. The fiber stash is impossible to manage in such a space!

  5. Biz G says:

Golly! We have just gotten COLD in Maryland, very little snow. Would love being cozied up by the fire with a foot of snow outside. Though February is just beginning and that is usually when we get our “big ones”. Calendar suggestion – how about a Jack Russell terrier for September?? And can he be brown and white? Love your calendars. Thanks for the blogging and I am with you 100% on Miss Bunting. C YA!

    • sbranch says:

Oh my goodness . . . I should just give up and do cat and dog calendars! 🙂 They are so fun to paint!

      • SusanA says:

Ooo, yes, and a blue merle Sheltie with two blue eyes (like my girl Dylan)! I received your calendars and “year in notepads” for Christmas and now I have a little bit of Susan Branch wonderfulness in my purse, kitchen, office…. Can’t wait to see what you paint and write for 2016!

      • Arline in LA says:

Oh yes Susan. All kitties and puppies would be good! And a few teapots and teacups. Maybe some quilts. And sneak in a recipe or two every month, OK? Would hate to miss out on some inspiring quotes because I cut the pages up for my scrapbook, so add a few of those. There, that should do it. Oh, and someday, on some page, sneak in a drawing of my beloved Desert Rose to remind us you are also a California girl, lol. Arline in Burbank

  6. Elisabeth Weakley says:

I’m so pleased that someone else feels that Miss Bunting is an ill mannered up start! (I wonder if this makes me a bad person? Oh Well, it’s safe to feel aggrieved with her since she is figment of the imagination.)
I really adore Jack, he is so very charming.
    Elisabeth

    • sbranch says:

It doesn’t make us bad because you’re right . . . she’s not real! Hooray!

      • Elisabeth Weakley says:

        Thank you I feel vindicated!
I was noticing Jack’s Poirot-esque appearance and thought that he also resembles two other characters, Jack Sparrow(Johnny Depp) and also Nick Charles(William Powell of Thin Man fame) Both great characters.

  7. Donna C says:

Oh my goodness… I really didn’t think there would be a new post from you, but thought I’d check and there it was. I love it when you re-cap Downton Abbey. I feel the same about Miss Bunting…such bad manners…bye bye to her. Out here in N. Calif. my irises and daffodils are blooming…not good…we need more winter.

  8. Cindy says:

I love that Jack is going to be in our calendar! The snow pictures of your house and yard are so beautiful. Stay warm up there!

  9. Suzanne C. says:

Good Morning Susan, Joe, Girl Kitty and Jack,
Its beginning to warm up here in Las Vegas, expected temps today 70, but truth be known I would love to be in 25 inches of snow, white and crisp snow crunchy as a Macintosh apple. With the furnace working overtime and a pot of soup on the stove and a mac and cheese casserole bubbling in the oven. I find you can take the girl out of Michigan but not the Michigan out of the girl. I still long for the sweet slowness of a snowy, cold January. Have a good day stay warm and wrapped in love in Smallville. Love sent….

  10. Suzanne C. says:

And I so want Ms. Crowley to get married….and become lady of the manor!

    • sbranch says:

You mean Isobel? I bet she turns the manor into a hospital/orphanage/nursery-school/food bank! 🙂

      • Shannon (Pennsylvania) says:

I adore Isobel, but I’m a little worried about her! When she arrived at the cocktail party with her beau she told Violet that she needed to sit down at once. Her excuse was that she’d turned her ankle getting out of the car, but I didn’t notice her limping. I just hope Jullian Fellowes doesn’t have a mysterious illness planned for her 🙁

      • Patti from California says:

So true, Susan! That made me laugh out loud!

      • Amy says:

        Hahahaha!! True!

  11. Betty says:

Oh Susan, I laughed until I had tears in my eyes over Mister dark-circles-under-his-eyes. I also love the show and the clothes are fabulous. Yes, Cora is great and I kinda knew that Big Daddy was going to come home from his business trip. LOL!
Thanks for taking time out of your busy day to share photos and quips. Your kitties are so cute and your cozy home is perfect for the snowy days of February. Thanks again for making my life a little more joyous.
    Joyously,
    Betty @ My Cozy Corner

  12. Betsy in Pennsylvania says:

It’s always wonderful to hear from you! It sounds silly but I would like to see pictures of furniture in your calendars……..I told you it sounds silly. When you draw a picture of a chair I just want to sit in it, picture or not. It must be because in the tiny little house we just moved into I am placing furniture, moving it, sitting in it, moving it again. And picking paint colors. Speaking of that did you notice the scene in Downton where Anna goes to get Lady Mary in her bedroom to tell her the police need to talk to both of them. The wall color in that bedroom sent me over the moon!

  13. Bev says:

I hope Miss Bunting is gone but I fear she will be back. Doesn’t Tom make you feel protective? So do you watch the Great British Baking Show that comes on right before Downton? I don’t know where in Britain they filmed this show but it is at a gorgeous location. Some sort of park or large garden. Such a fun show! Stay warm! XO

    • sbranch says:

I do watch that! Was so HAPPY they didn’t send anyone home! That’s my least favorite part! They need a Ms. Bunting on that show so I can cheer when they send her home!

      • Mary S. says:

        Rotfl!!!!!

      • Elizabeth Winterbone says:

I think the Great British Baking show is so charming. It’s a competition but everyone is nice and supportive. It IS hard when they have to send someone home! Can’t everyone win? Ha!

    • Which series of GBBO you are viewing? They have all been filmed in different locations. If no one was voted off it sounds as if it is Series Three, where John Whaite’s accident resulted in no one being voted off that week. If so, Harptree Court in East Harptree, Somerset is where you are loving.
GBBO is one of my most favourite programmes and I just adore Mary Berry. I use a lot of her recipes in my baking. ~~~Deb in Wales xoxo

      • Margot ~~~ Virginia Beach says:

        Hi Debs,
Waving back to you~~~. We had a full British Breakfast a week ago at a local place here in Virginia Beach. Yum!
        Margot

    • Karen P. - Wisconsin says:

I think Martha is so darling on The Bake-off! Glad they kept everyone, too! I am always in awe of their creations! Love that show. I’m told there’s also The Great British Sew-Off (or something like that). Wish they’d televise it!

      • Hi Karen ~ yes, the Great British Sewing Bee ~ unmissable and it starts here for it’s third run on Thursday ~ tomorrow! Oh, I wish you could view it. Patrick is so adorable ~~~Deb xo

    • Bex Crowell says:

We watch the Great British Baking show too and love it much, much more than D. Abbey. It’s real… D. Abbey is so phoney-baloney! I know you all love it, and yes we DO watch, but it’s all tongue-in-cheek, no? So sarcastic all the time. I don’t know how they can all keep from laughing whilst saying their lines…. But the baking show, and that 19 y/o Martha… she is my hero! She has so much intelligence in her little finger… (I already know who wins the competition, too, but I’m not telling…)

  14. It is so cold here in NE Ohio too with a lot of snow. I try not to burn my fireplace till evening. I don’t want to run short on wood. I love your recap of Downton and was waiting for this post! I had a maddening evening on Sunday as my Satellite went out because of the ice. I had to wait till the next day to stream it on my computer!!! I look forward all week to transporting myself to “the Abbey”! I too am praying that Miss Bunting doesn’t reappear!! Right now I’m worrying so about Anna and Mr Bates!

  15. Oh how we laughed at your podgy groundhog when we turned the calender over to February. I will, I will promise to make your spareribs – I love to chew and suck away on bones. As for Downtown we have just finished the series – seemed a short one we thought. Another blogger dug a picture out of her basement which does remind one of Lady Edith – here’s the link if you want a peek. thegardenerscottage.blogspot.co.nz/2015/02/i-live-for-beauty-and-elegance.html.
Keep warm over there! Love Leanne NZ

  16. Lori says:

Hello from my own little frozen corner in Indiana! We had about 14 inches of snow. More is on the way. While I was out there trying to keep one step ahead of the shoveling, I kept telling myself that Susan would make this sound fun! It didn’t work. I guess this Girlfriend doesn’t have enough magic. Just really sore muscles. However, I do enjoy being inspired by your Smallville. Thanks!

  17. Mary says:

love that it’s snowing on the pic of your house in the snow. what a gorgeous photo ! so far here in St. Louis, we have had three tenths of an inch……and my grandson got a sled from Santa ! hoping that we get some ( but not too much !) haha ! stay warm ! love seeing the pics of the kitties…thank you !

  18. Sandra says:

We are more advanced in Downton Abbey over here, so I won’t breathe a word, but you’ll LOVE it!
Mr. Selfridge has just started up again too… drama and more drama. Is that all they’re going to feed us on? Dear me!
Your hibiscus is simply gorgeous! How lovely to have that blooming inside in the midst of winter!
Jack always makes me laugh! He has such a special personality! I think I’m coming over to warm my toes in front of the fire, right next to him!

    • sbranch says:

The thing about Mr. Selfridge that I don’t like, is Mr. Selfridge. I really haven’t been able to warm up to the actor playing that part. I don’t know why!

      • Karen P. - Wisconsin says:

He’s not a warm character. I think he’s meant to be disliked a bit. I get very frustrated with him!

      • Bex Crowell says:

Selfridge — same with me Susan! I didn’t watch the show because I never could stomach that Jeremy Pivin (?). But that said, we saw a documentary about the real Mr. Selfridge last night (it was where an episode of Midsomer Murders was scheduled to air) and it was fabulous. The real story behind the real man… who built that incredible fortune and store and then died penniless. What a story!

      • Deb W says:

I’m with you. Don’t like Mr. Selfridge. Also the costumes and hair styles (including Mr. S) are often are ‘wrong’ – too modern.

        • sbranch says:

Wrong and sort of giant, like wigs that don’t seem real. I haven’t watched it very often. I keep thinking I should try again.

      • Pat Mofjeld says:

        He doesn’t feel sincere or trustworthy to me…he is a womanizer… 🙂

      • Laura Ann in Vermont says:

I feel exactly the same and that’s why I quit watching.

        • sbranch says:

Ah, I’m not alone. And the idea, the premise of putting a show in a department store is such a good one. Makes me think if they can make a huge long series from his life, why can’t they just go ahead and do Beatrix Potter’s life?

          • Patti from California says:

You are definitely not alone. I quit watching after the first season. A Beatrix Potter series would be so great! – I’ve almost worn out my “Miss Potter” DVD!

          • sbranch says:

Me too. I try to save it for when I “need it.”

          • Barbara Page says:

Yes, yes! Do a series on Beatrix Potter!!! I could hardly tear myself away from her lovely Hilltop Farm when my sister and I were in England in October. I kept hoping I could sneak in a quick picture in that dear little home…but alas, I am a rule follower.

          • sbranch says:

Me too. No pictures inside. That’s OK, I’m sure that neither you nor I will ever forget.

        • Carol Maurer~~~~ Kennewick, Wa says:

Hummmm…. I am totally in the dark with this Mr. Selfridge? I’m taking it it is a TV show?

          • sbranch says:

Yes, it’s a “truish” story based on the life of American Mr Selfridge and set in the London department store he started, humbly called “Selfridges.” 🙂

      • Sandra says:

I know what you mean about the actor who plays Mr. Selfridge, he seems to be miscast. On the other hand, I love hearing all about the big store which I always visit every time I go to London.

As for the film “Miss Potter”, I was very disappointed that Renée Zellweger played the writer and illustrator. As much as I loved her as “Bridget Jones” (in the first film, the second was not so good), she definitely did not suit the role of all I imagined the real Miss Potter to be!

      • I don’t like his character one bit, but I’m not going to let that stop me from watching the show; I love the clothes ~ they make me think of how my grandmother may have dressed ~ and I quite like some of the other characters and how their story lines are developing, especially as how the Great War impacted on the lives of so many in such different ways. ~~~Deb xo

  19. Mary S. says:

Susan, I think that Edith and the farmer should tell the farmer’s wife, mrs. Drew, that the baby is Edith’s! Unless they think she would cause trouble, I think that it might solve some problems, I’m not sure. What do you think about that? I also thought it was so funny when Lady Violet talked about her maid maybe leaving because her mother is infirm and she said, “Oh, what about me? I’m infirm! And Isabel said, ” You are as infirm as Windsor Castle!” And what about the police, why do they keep badgering Mr and Mrs Bates? All they are is servants in a house where Mr Green worked and visited for a while before he died. It just seems kind of weird that they keep badgering them and they don’t have any evidence at all! I am loving every minute of the show!! I’m just sorry this is the last season. :'( Love from Mary S. in Fresno CA

  20. Mary Whiting says:

    Hi Susan,
Ms. Bunting was not a good match for Tom. He deserves an intelligent woman, one with her own thoughts, etc. but one who does not have a chip on her shoulder at all times. I wanted to say, “Look around you and enjoy, for Pete’s sake….you are in Downton Abbey!”.
Susan, I LOVE the library, also. My goal, when my husband and I visit Highclere Castle in early May, is to have my photo taken on/near those red velvet sofas. I love them!
I will do my best to have your book there and post a photo in that room. And the dining room if we are lucky. Stay warm.

    XO Mary

  21. Chris Wells In Knickerbocker, W TX says:

Hmm? A Susan Branch Dog Calendar and a Susan Branch Cat Calendar in addition to the regular calendar! What a great idea! I see potential here! Are you sure you can’t clone yourself? I haven’t seen this episode of Downton yet, but not too much was revealed.
But had to laugh…..only Joe would have the forethought to cover the wood pile!! That man is a planner!
Stay warm and enjoy what’s left of winter…..the days are growing longer.
    Love from West Texas
    Chris

  22. Rosanne Murphy (Oregon) says:

When the insufferably rude Miss Bunting drove away, I felt like cheering! Of course, the show has to have a villain or two, so Mr. Barrow continues in his nefarious ways. Oh yes, the clothes are perfection! It’s the same with the Miss Fisher series on Netflix. Have you seen it yet? The delicious wardrobe is a character all by itself. Such fun! I love your kitties. Girl has such an air of serenity about her. My kitty is very playful, completely cuddly, and such a comfort always, though my girlfriends think she’s a figment of my imagination because she hides when there is company. When she first moved in, I woke one morning to find she’d gotten into my yarn basket and woven yarn all around and through the dining room chairs. I knew then she was the perfect cat for me – she knits!:)

  23. Esther Hayes says:

    Hi Susan,
I have a sister-in-law in East Sandwich and I emailed her this morning thinking of all her snow. I, too, got into your blog thinking you are too busy to blog, but, lo and behold, there you were. How dedicated and loyal to your girlfriends. And thank you for your blog. Seems like everyone is on the same page about Ms. Bunting. I thought Robert was going to have a heart attack at dinner, and that would be another show. How much are they going to push him with Cora playing around with that other guy coming into her bedroom. What is she thinking? To change subjects, I read a book called “Dewey, the library cat from Iowa” and that cat loved those “things you shoot”, but this cat ATE them!! lol It’s a great true story. Thank you for putting JOY in our lives. Love Gladys Taber’s saying about your birds (As long as I have a window, life is exciting). Now I will make my afternoon tea. Have a beautiful day………..Esther

  24. Linda from Sudbury says:

We just finished digging out from another 14 inches of snow. More is coming Thursday. I think the weather people are afraid to talk about it!!! We just want the Patriots’ parade tomorrow to go on as scheduled. I love your bird pictures. We shovel paths to get to the feeders. I also put peanuts in the shell out in a hanging tray. Everyone loves them including the birds. We also have a birdbath heater. They do appreciate having fresh water at this time of year. Today we had a robin visit the steaming water. Spring just CAN’T be far behind!!!

Hi Susan, Greetings from the South. Glad you are staying warm….what beautiful pictures. I love how you take in the beauty of it and don’t complain. I also love your interpretations of Downton…..love it every week. I was very proud of Robert when he socked that guy making a pass at Cora…..love your wording about hair laundering…..too funny!

  26. I LOVED it when Robert hauled off and smacked that guy trying to take advantage of his wife! I was cheering!!! She was that ignorant that she didn’t know she was leading him on?

  27. Oh Susan, I just love the blue and white teapot you painted! It would be delightful to have one just like it on a cold, snowy day like today! Our weekend blizzard blew in 20 inches of snow. Yesterday I took a walk through the garden with my camera, knee-deep in snow. The snow is so sparkly in the sunshine! Today I am enjoying it through the window, all warm and cozy inside. I agree that Lady Mary and Tom would make a wonderful couple. I just know that the wrong person was eavesdropping on Lady Edith’s phone call. So worried for her… I adore your final photo ~ a perfect picture postcard from Smallville!
Stay warm and cozy, dear one!
    Love,
    Dawn

Hi Susan~It’s still winter here in northern Michigan too…huge fluffly snowflakes were flying this morning…15*…we watched Downton Monday because of the super bowl…I’m soooo glad the guy who came to take pictures of the painting L~E~F~T…but now I think there will be iciness/icy-ness between Cora and Robert…I too think Barrow must have seen Edith making the phone call…can’t wait til Sunday…HOORAY for your blue junk room!!!…I picture you being ultra~organized, but I’m so glad you have things lying around…I don’t have the luxury of having an entire junk room…wish I did because I have bunches of goodies I can’t part with…sooo many books that I decided I would start going to our local library…I went this morning and brought home a very large pile of books to keep me busy in this cold weather…stay warm and cozy…xoxo…

  29. Donna Hamilton says:

This week’s Downton episode was one of the best yet. I love how Tom Branson said goodbye to Ms. Bunting — like I told you not to go there, but you just wouldn’t leave Lord Grantham be!!!! I think that Tom has become one of the family and he might not agree with them 100%, but he is smart enough to keep his opinions quiet or to himself. Tom has become a nobleman, it not by birth, then by association and love for the Grantham/Crawley family. It even seems that the Dowager has warmed to Tom. As for Isobel, I think she will marry for love, but not necessarily Lord Merton, maybe the Doctor?
About your weather, I am somewhat jealous. Here in Arkansas we usually do not get snow, we get ice and power outages. Your world looks so lovely. I need a snow day, just one, because if it snows here (just an inch) everything closes and we all stay home. I could use that right about now.

  30. Linda Pintarell says:

Keep watching the weather out your way…you certainly have had your share of winter snow and cold…and I know how you love it! It’s beyond Spring like in Southern California…heading into summer temps. We so need rain…it just doesn’t happen…it just rains all around us in San Diego…and misses where I love almost completely. Grrrr…as my grasses and plants need moisture! LOVED all your pix…thanks for posting and letting us know how it is going out there.

  31. Monique says:

I love seeing you in my Inbox..

Jacques does paths everywhere also.. but uses the snowblower..The path to the back..our snowshoes make:)
I love seeing your drawing/painting process..
I was thrilled to see Miss Bunting leave and also said No….when Tom left to see her.
I love seeing Mary and Tom together.
Cora ..is annoying me:) Just slightly..but she has been just a little too coy..:)
    While Edith suffers..
I watch the Paradise..and Mr Selfridge..

    Call The Midwife..all favorites..
Have you ever watched Last Tango in Halifax? Really good..last night we watched the last show of Season 2 I think ..the wedding:)
    Barrow is abominable.
Someone is definitely going to hear Edith ‘s conversation on the phone..
In the low minuses every morning here..a fire every day.
I love my glass of red wine in front of it before dinner~

  32. Joann says:

Oh Susan…I’ve been watching your storms. I loved it when the FINISH LINE got cleaned off on the streets of Boston…that’s so lovely. So American. Such Pride! Yes, Downton is filled with twists and turns, but their beautiful skin, their lovely use of the English language, and the dresses….oh the dresses!! I love the proposal…….but despise Tom’s arrogant nature now. Humphhh! Loved your line about Miss Bunting….yes, gave me chills she did! Nice that she’s a teacher and all, but horrible attitude she has! Bye-bye!!

We were socked in at Christmastime with one of those magical snows, but now we’re pretty brown again. We’re fighting voles in the garden. Never had them before…vicious little creatures! More to come on that! I’ve got two parts of my England cruise up on the blog if you’d like to see. A Fine Romance came along. Had to cancel our visit to England, however, as my mom was diagnosed with lymphoma just prior to the sailing. So we landed in Southampton, spent one night at a magnificent b&b in Milford-on-Sea and then flew home. But your book came along everywhere….across the sea and on to tea!
Stay warm…. love Jack’s antics!! Love your filled bird feeders, too!! My birdies have finally found me….it’s been months since our move and no birdies. They found me now!! Time to buy more birdseed! xoxo

    • sbranch says:

Voles! Devils! So sorry you had to cancel part of your trip, I hope your mom is doing well. But your pictures of being on the Queen Mary 2 took me right back. I was so happy for YOU of all people to have done that. You are such a romantic! Takes a while for the birds to find us, but when they do, they tell all their friends and you become very popular! 🙂

  33. Sandra says:

Is it just me or did the font change throughout the blog? Difficult to read in spots.

    • sbranch says:

They “updated” the blog over the weekend. I’m not sure what is going on but I’ll try to figure it out. I really don’t like updates! It was hard enough to learn it the first time! 🙂

  34. Heartsdesire says:

What a sweet picture of Jack. I’m glad you’re immortalizing him, he deserves it.
Downton was wonderful as usual, so glad to see the back end of Miss Bunting. But she did add some spark to the show. I too, would like to see Lady Mary and Tom together, it could happen. I feel so sorry for Lady Edith. She should just bite the bullet and tell the family that Marigold is her daughter, they would certainly be shocked, but perhaps then she could be happy. I love Violet’s acerbic wit, especially when she applies it to Isabel Crawley. They are so good together. Hope your temperatures warm up a bit and you can get out for your daily walk.

  35. I worry about poor Anna & Mr. Bates. That Mr. Greene will somehow continue his horrid ways even from the grave. I was so disappointed in Cora all of last season, I felt like she was in a haze or something. This year she seems to be wide awake at last! The clothes and the accessories are more amazing with each week. And when The Dowager spoke of the ball at the Winter Castle, my mind went immediately to Dr. Zhivago.
Our hibiscus is blooming indoors like crazy, too. The flowers make me happy against the snow outside the window. Only 45 days until Spring. So either prediction from the ground hog ~ 6 more weeks of winter OR only 6 more weeks til Spring are virtually the exact same thing! 🙂

  36. Nancy says:

Love, love Jack’s portrait with the band in his mouth!

  37. Jennifer W says:

Here in Orlando, FL we are at a frigid 66 degrees. We are such babies when it comes to cool weather. Later this week it is supposed to be in the forties!
I love Jack’s little face. I could just cover it will kisses! Haven’t started Season 5 of Downton Abbey, hopefully this weekend. Did you watch any of The Paradise? I love that show, it has 2 seasons. I guess due to the popularity of Mr. Selfridge they are not going to make a 3rd season. That really stinks because it truly is a wonderful show.

  38. Erin says:

Susan, my mom sent me this blog post and I enjoyed it. There were two things I really liked about it. First, I am a big Downton Abbey fan and I agree, Miss Bunting had to go! I really love historical dramas, and get to see Alnick Castle this summer, where apparently they have done some DA filming this season.

Secondly, my Siamese cat LOVES those hair bands! She carries them around just like Jack, and plays fetch with them. She can go for an hour with me on the couch reading and her dropping and nudging and waiting for me to throw the hairband again. Cats really like the simplest things!

    Erin

  39. Trudy says:

Wish that Tom and Edith will be a couple.Think he is more Edith’s type of man than for her sister.
Love your photo’s of the squirrels outside the window.
Last winter there are 2 squirrels visiting the feeder I hang for them.
    Stay save
    greetings,Trudy from Holland

  40. Lynn McMahon says:

~~Good Afternoon~ I must be the only person on the planet who likes Miss Bunting’s character~Granted~ she is unrefined and DEFINATELY NEEDS to be respectful when she is a guest at someone’s home~ she but at least she isn’t a hypocrite!!~

  41. Karen P. - Wisconsin says:

I love seeing everyone’s beautiful snowfall pics! We have next-to-nothing here. Hoping for a clear sky to see the Snow Moon tonight! We have a trio of squirrels that I’ve been enjoying all week….chasing….playing….up and down the trees. So cute! I love the painting of Jack with his rubberband In his mouth! Too cute! I like that Mrs. Patmore is getting into the storyline more. Now she is buying a little cottage. Somehow I think Edith will end up there with Marigold…or hire someone to care for her there. I think she should just “suck it up” and own up to the fact that Marigold is hers and face the shame so she can be happy and have her daughter! For goodness sake! Anna IS a suspect in Mr. Green’s death, it appears! I wondered if that’s where things are heading. Hope not! Tom and Iris is what I think will come next. Mary is too “stiff” for Tom….not down-to-earth enough…in my opinion. I love that pic where he’s holdinv George’s finger. Melts my heart! Good riddance, Miss Bunting! But she’ll be back, I fear, just as Tom is getting his life together with someone else. And so goes my humble rantings….. 🙂 enjoy your winter wonderland! ♥♥♥

  42. Sandi says:

Couldn’t help but notice your drawing pencils are “Ticonderoga” brand. That’s the preference I put on our classroom supply list for 3rd grade! No other brand compares. 🙂

  43. Miss Bunting’s departure was, I am certain, met with cheers from the entire viewing audience. I didn’t even like that constant “I dare you to contradict me” look on her face. Violet’s past —– ahhhh, what a perfect idea the writers have! I would bet that almost every woman has a memory of a dance, a dress, a beau. I know I do. I’m anxious to see what happens with this. I love where the Russians are. Secrets just as smoky and deep are coming out of it. Poor Edith will most likely continue in that mode; I noted this time that her face seems pinched with misery. Poor thing. Lots to anticipate in the next episode.

  44. Karen P. - Wisconsin says:

Oops! Not Iris…….Rose! I always get her flower name mixed up! Can’t wait to see her as Cinderella! She’ll be perfect! And Daisy as one of the mean step-sisters!!

  45. Diana Moore says:

Loved the pictures of wonderful kitty. However did you apply snow to your picture of your
home. That looks beautiful. Help please. Thank you.

You know, if you get to the Biltmore, in Asheville, North Carolina, they have a Downtown Abbey costume exhibit going on- it opens Feb 5-May, 25 2015.
Hopefully our tiny museum in Anaheim, CA will be hosting this exhibit sometime in the near future…
I want to snuggle up with girl kitty and, of course, Mr. Jack–your blog always lowers my blood pressure!

  48. Donna says:

Miss Bunting is certainly annoying but I can’t say I really dislike her !!

Here’s one of my favourite “cat quotes”: ” I love cats because I enjoy my home; and little by little, they become its visible soul.” — Jean Cocteau. Just thought I would remind you of it as it is so true. Love your snow pictures – we don’t have much out here on the west coast of Canada.

  49. LOVE your last picture of your house with the snow falling, so fun!
Here in The Netherlands we have a tiny bit snow which melts away real quick and the whole country is deranged. ( had to look that word up) Trains have problems, heavy traffic more than ever, it must sound hilarious for you if I see your amount of snow…….
    enjoy your warm shoes!
    Petra Matthew

  50. Nancy from Iowa says:

Ahhh, Downton….I so agreed with your feelings. I felt so glad that someone else feels exactly how I do about certain characters. Especially Bunting….I actually found myself hissing at her when she appeared on the last episode and cheering out loud when she left. I have a funny feeling we haven’t seen the last of her, but I hope we have. I never thought of Tom and Mary as a couple, but now that you mention it, hmmm, sounds kind of good. Although I wonder if Mary isn’t a little too spoiled for him. She seems a little to used to the good life. But then maybe they could help each other by strengthening each other’s weaknesses. You may be on to something there, Susan.

  51. Diane Jeffries says:

I too have a hibiscus blooming . It’s in the basement next to a window.
I get such a lift when I venture downstairs and catch an unexpected flower.

  52. Vivian in TN says:

That Jack, he is beyond cute! Wish I had one exactly like him.

Wow! I never noticed Tom that much until he was telling Ms. Bunting goodbye, but when he took her umbrella and kissed her, then walked to her car? Whatever it’s called, gave her the umbrella and stood in the rain, I was overcome with his gentlemanliness…..I am twice his age, but now there is a catch. Haha. I love men with impeccable manners…and does he have them.
As for Robert jumping Cora’s friend, I felt that was out of character for Robert. I would have thought he would turn up his nose at such, but that may have been the way they did it back in the day. Also tossing his napkin, not good. As for Edith, for goodness sake, own up that it’s her child and get on with it….maybe I’m living in this century and not that one.

I love the flower garden where Violet and her daughter were having tea. Also inside Violets house, but her valet just looks like he is sneering. Not too fond of him. Oh, and Mr. Bates, read one of your comments once that they didn’t like him, I think he’s kind of sexy….in a British kind of way.

Love, love your blog, and actually try to read all the comments unless they get into the thousands.

    • sbranch says:

At least they didn’t duel or something! He’s definitely got a temper! Imagine how funny it was for them all to film that segment! How could they not laugh?

  53. Jacquelyn -Las Vegas says:

What a beautiful post. Feel almost guilty enjoying the Arizona sunshine here in the ” Valley of the Sun”. You folks have really had a winter and the “rodent” didn’t help much with his prediction …

Seing your work in progress is so inspirational. Retrieving my sketch book directly.

Also love your take on “The Abbey”. I cheered out loud when the “Bunting” headed out for her new position. “Don’t let the door hit you, my dear” … Lol. Hope you and Joe are warm and comfy and I hope spring is right around the corner. Thanks Sue.

  54. Lyndia from Corte Madera, CA says:

LOVE, LOVE, LOVE peeking into your daily life. Photos tell it all. Snow, birds, kitties, your detailed artwork (really love that) makes reading your posting just plain fun and I continue to want more. I’m always glad to see you’ve made a posting. Bottom line is Ms. Bunting is just plain mean. Glad she’s gone!

    • sbranch says:

      Thanks Lyndia!

    • Janet Hundley says:

I’ve started watching and taping the baking show. So much anxiety and angst, but fun. Love all the Downton comments. I hope what Lady Mary gave Anna for safekeeping (in the brown bag) doesn’t come back to haunt her…Anna that is. Mr. Bates seems to wonder what went on with her and Mr. Green…this could give him ammunition to fuel his suspicions. I agree with Susan and hope Ms. Bunting is gone for good, that Robert will see the error of his ways and there are weddings and baby showers galore! I’d also watch for the clothes, jewelry, scenery and grammer even if the acting wasn’t good…which it is.

  55. Renee says:

Dear Susan: Many thanks, many, many. How pretty your falling snow looks! Glad it’s cyber snow…We are still digging out. There goes another dumpster semi-load of gorgeous white Chicago snow. Beep!Beep! Back the truck up. It’s like a snow construction site around here. They brought in a huge front loader today. The neighborhood kids are going to be disappointed when they arrive home. The kids were using the thirty foot high mounds for sledding. Ah! Downton! This is a horrible thing to say, please take it only as it applies to the show – but – I thought Miss Bunting was a little squirt of a thing. 4’8″ maybe? And yes, she did not know how to edit, or mind her manners. Do you think she is gone for good? I love that she inspired Daisy to embrace the great wide world, and learning. No character at Downton seems totally good or bad to me. Even Barrow, poor thing is medicating himself so he will ‘like women’. Whoa Nelly. Hm. And yes, love that Cora got some much needed praise, (the ex-footman from Gosford Park! Ha!). What a wonderful show! It is as good as the old time Upstairs/Downstairs. Once again, thank you Susan. Stay cozy near the fire! Renee

  56. Beth from San Diego says:

Hi Susan. I love Lord Merton and Isabel – they seem so perfectly matched and he loves her – and he has turned her head. She really thought her life was over when Matthew died – I don’t think we were empathetic enough – he was her boy-trust me, our boys are so special. Now she has a chance for some happiness. They have so much in common. Lovely.

  57. Luanne Simon says:

I tried the Pineapple Spearrib recipe from the calendar. I used country style ribs. They were yummy! I may add a can of crushed or chunk pineapple next time.

  58. Lorraine says:

I would like to echo everyone’s sentiments – farewell to Miss Bunting. Bad manners to the nth degree. Also, I am glad I’m not the only one who thought it would be lovely (in a strange sort of way) to have Tom and Mary get together – but I can’t believe that will happen. Yes – fingers crossed for Isobel and Lord Merton. I think that would be lovely. What do you think will happen with Daisy? They are really building up her education – is it going to lead to her leaving? Hmmm…. And hopefully Mrs. Patmore’s investment will be safe. I kind of liked it that she didn’t take Carston’s advice. He seems to need Mrs. Hughes to help him figure things out. Is there romance in the air for them, as well?

About Edith – is that the plan to kidnap Marigold? I couldn’t quite get everything they said – I heard about her going to a school in France but didn’t understand how they were going to make that happen. Sounds like a doomed plan. I still think Edith’s aunt is really her mother (can’t remember her name). She is so concerned about Edith, much more than her “parents” are… Always something to think about.

And Thomas needs to follow Miss Bunting lead and hit the road. He’s just too mean.

Lovely snow pictures – we have about 11.5 inches here and more today (but not much). Thankfully, we haven’t had the extreme cold. It is much easier to enjoy when you can be outside for more than a few minutes. Stay warm…

    • sbranch says:

I think in those days, whatever the “quality people” wanted, they got! We’ll see. Not fair to steal Marigold from mom who loves her!

  59. Terri says:

Susan, have you ever considered doing one of the “page-a-day” calendars? I would so love to have that to look forward to every morning. I own several of your books and your large calendar, I have sent each of my three granddaughter’s one of your books, but still, I want more…daily!! One of my granddaughters and I are into playing with watercolors, may I ask what is in your palette in the pictures…what type or brand?

    Terri

    • sbranch says:

I buy all kinds of watercolors . . . tubes and even children’s paint sets. I’m really not picky. Page a day — the only reason I don’t do them is because of time . . . 365 days would take a while, plus I think people would want it to be different every year ~ so I weighed my time and thought I’d rather write books!

      • Terri says:

You wouldn’t really need to do new drawings, they are small and can be taken from all your other work, your work is so cheerful and makes me smile, that is what I look for first thing in the morning!

  60. bobbie Calgaro says:

Downtown gets more interesting as time goes on. It will be interesting to see Who Lady Mary ends up with. Tony is not going to go down easy and since her reputation is on the line again………… Hmmmm. I agree about Miss Bunting, how can she be so rude to people who have welcomed her into their home. There are ways to disagree without being disagreeable.
I wanted to let you know that I am so excited. The clothes are coming to Biltmore House and my husband is taking me to see them. Biltmore is one of my favorite places and having the clothes there will be a real treat. If you ever get a chance to come to NC, you must see America’s castle. It is fabulous.

    • sbranch says:

You are either the 3rd or 4th of our Girlfriends who will be there! How fun for you all . . . I was saying in another comment, you should wear something so you can all find each other!

  61. Becky says:

Haven’t been able to watch Downtown Abbey yet, notice the yet, but reading the recaps on your blog makes me want to in the worst way. Even my husband is thinking maybe we should check it out:) Your snow looks so beautiful. We have snow too, but here in a midwestern valley with very few trees it isn’t quite so peaceful and cozy looking as it is at your house. The fire crackling in our woodstove, and the comfort food we’ve been devouring add a coziness that contrasts perfectly with the wildness outdoors though. Thank you for sharing your fire, lovely cats, and those delightfully addicting recaps of Downtown Abbey.

  62. Maryann Howell says:

So so happy Miss Bunting is gone! I was sort of hoping that Edith and Tom might get together. Together they could run the publishing business and I’ll bet Tom could figure out a way to help Edith get to keep her little marigold. Think that Marigold is such a darling name. Also if you love downton costumes and the hair and shoes which makes it so much more fun to watch than just a wonderful drama you should check out the Miss Fischer murder mysteries. Filmed in Australia and takes place in the twenties. Oh its so much fun! The costumes and hair ! Delicious! Love my desk blotter so much! please make another for 2016. I have my Calendar in the kitchen . Love them so much!!!

  63. Susan,
Since I live in an area that doesn’t get snow I am thoroughly enjoying your snow days, the wonderful tales of critters, sweet kitty antics, and fires in the grate. How wonderful. I have always romanticized a beautiful snow covered landscape and you’ve all but made it real for me! 🙂
I’m so happy you are safe and warm.
    Karen

  64. Judy Mapston says:

Yes, Downton Abby is one of my favorites too. You are “right on” with your comments about it! Too funny! I so love the dresses and hair pieces too. I want someone to pick out my clothes for me to wear to work everyday and make me look beautiful!! Love the snow where you are. Miss that! We are in boring weather “San Diego”. ha ha. I know some would love it. I prefer 4 seasons.

  65. Judy Ellington says:

Love all the photos and Jack’s portrait! Your new blogs are my favorite thing to find when I open my computer! Would love to find a little water bowl like you use for painting, any chance some are still out there somewhere?

    • sbranch says:

I don’t know, I got that pot at Disneyland in California about a month before I painted my first painting.

  66. Leslie Freeman says:

Susan, I love your reports from Smallville. We live in one in Maine. It teaches us to enjoy the simple pleasures – especially at this time of year.

Regarding Downton, Some of the themes are wearing thin. I think Bates and Anna have been miserable long enough! I also have a feeling that Thomas will steal jewelry from Cora and set up her lady’s maid…. he is such a slimy character. But off we go, tuning in every week!

Thanks for your joy of life and your art, it brightens the dead of winter! (or any time for that matter)

  67. Amy Warren says:

Ms. Bunting was awful, so glad she’s gone. But with this new plan of the Dowager’s, I feel bad for the Drews..for them to have to lose Marigold when they are the only family she knows. Why couldn’t they have sent Edith to America to begin with?! I would love Mary to wind up with Tom, and did you hear the latest? Julian Fellowes has confirmed next season will be the last. Sob!

      • Lorraine says:

I read somewhere that Julian Fellowes has committed to doing a show for the US – similar to Downton but for US upper class in the late 1800s or early 1900s (can’t remember)… That could be interesting too but will miss Downton.

        • sbranch says:

Yes, very interesting . . . I’ll love that too . . . anything with history in it makes me happy!

          • Lorraine says:

If you Google “Julian Fellowes new tv series” you can see info about the project. It’s called The Gilded Age – set in NY in the late 19th century. It was commissioned by NBC Universal. Sounds promising…

          • sbranch says:

The Guilded Age! I was just telling my dad about it . . . sounds wonderful! Especially and because of Julian Fellowes!

  68. Love, love, love your drawing of the groundhog. He is so adorable, I just want to pick him up and hug him!!! Your comments about Ms Rude Bunting are dead on. . . hope she is gone for good! And I too wish Mary and Tom would get together – they are perfect together!!!! Thank yu for posting all your wonderful pictures of your cozy home. I love watching the squirrels and birds, in fact must run out and buy more seed as the squirrels have really pigged out. . .my poor birds!! Stay warm 🙂

  69. Faye Fern says:

Love Girl sitting on the red checked pillow and you truly are living in a winter wonderland!

  70. Ali Honeyfield says:

I am loving all your cold snow photos. I live somewhere it will never snow so am mesmerised by your photo with the snow falling. One could stand all day just watching it.
Jack is very cute – it’s his little curled moustache I like.
On our TV news we saw the ground hog doing some ear biting!
Does the weight of the snow break precious shrubs in the garden?

    • sbranch says:

Yes, that is a good question. Joe went out with the broom today to get some snow off the bushes, they bed under the weight.

  71. Jackie says:

What a beautiful picture of your home with the little snowflakes coming down. I decided I needed a cup of tea after reading your post!
Ahhhh… I am so eager to find out what happens next on Downton Abbey. We make sure to tape the show even though we watch it, just in case someone interrupts us and I would miss something. All of the characters are intriguing and keep me guessing possible scenarios. I was glad to see Ms Bunting go and I hope that is the last of her.
Enjoy the beautiful snow and stay snug with your crackling fireplace!

  72. Susanna says:

Looks like everything is all cozy for winter at your place.
I love Downton Abbey, too. I’ve always liked those PBS British shows, and I’m surprised to find myself in rather large company with this one. I would love to be on it! For now, I watch it every Sunday night. It gives me a good feeling before the hustle and bustle of another week begins anew.

  73. Bobbi says:

What an entertaining post filled with sweet photos. Love the cat pix, the knit winter cap awaiting a head to keep warm, and most of all today, your fireplace pictures. I can almost feel the warmth. I just have a gas fireplace now, and it’s just not the same, although much easier!

  74. Beth D. says:

But but but…what about when Robert walked into the house EARLY just as that oily art historian was walking into Cora’s bedroom! I was sitting on the edge of my seat with my hands over my mouth gasping! My dear man was laughing at me and I removed one hand long enough to wave it at him and shush him!!! LOL, I’m with you Susan, I LOVE DOWNTON ABBEY!

  75. Joyce (Joy) Cunningham says:

Oh Jack you have my heart…you little charmer you. May you live forever! Yes Susan, a Kitties and puppies calendar, please! 😉 We are enjoying your winter wonderland there. Thank you for all your beautiful snow pics and your Hibiscus blooming in February…oh my what a gift! Here in the Pacific NW we are in mid 50’s and raining today. No snow in sight. Loving Downton Abby but is it true that this is the last season? I will miss it terribly….if it’s true. (?)
    XXO…Joy

    • sbranch says:

Don’t know, but that’s what one of Girlfriends is telling us, so I think we have to believe it . . . don’t worry, it’s a long time from now.

      • Susan from Bainbridge Island, Washington state says:

No no…THIS season is not the last…next season, they say, will be the finale……so sad…I adore Downton A………..I am with you Susan, I love everything about the rooms, the paintings, the books in the library, the architecture, the furniture, their formality, the clothes, the hairdos, the tea cups, everything downstairs in the kitchen…just !!! I would love to see Violet show up at some ball in that light blue velvet gown with the silver lace and dance again with her Russian Prince…wouldn’t it be so lovely for her…..I am such a romantic at heart!…………..Maybe that all could happen at Isobels wedding!! hmmmmmmmm.

        • sbranch says:

Oh no, I read that wrong, you’re right, this isn’t the last season, next year is! Whew! Thank you Susan!

  76. Karen says:

I do so enjoy your calendars and have repurposed your artwork in them for crafty gifts to my college aged daughters! The sentiments, color, and coziness of your creations make perfect remembrances of the safe haven of home…and that is something I pray my daughters never let lapse from their mind.
As for Miss Bunting…I too found it a shame that the one lady to spark renewed enthusiasm in Tom had to be one of an ungracious spirit. But, I fear Miss Bunting may return in one capacity or another…if they can get her back to Downton before the ending of the series following season 6. I have been so disheartened by that news!
    Warm wishes,
    Karen

    • sbranch says:

Thank you Karen, that is so nice to hear. As for Miss Bunting, I blame Julian Fellowes. He wrote her and foisted her off on the rest of us, but mainly Tom!

  77. Kathy Phenix says:

Love your take on Downton dramas! I agree with most but don’t see Mary and Tom getting together. I think Lady Mary is too aloof and consumed by being LADY Mary. I hope Edith gets some closure on where her “baby Daddy” is and if he’ll come back to her.
Meanwhile, in real life, love, love, love Jack and his little life. I want to come back as a cat. A much loved indoor cat. of course. He does have it all. Watching birds and squirrels argue over food, chasing elastic bands that fly through the air and helping “Mom” draw and paint. And then curling up in front of the warm fire and taking a little nap. Could it get any better??
Stay warm and healthy. Love from sunny Florida.

    • sbranch says:

No, I’ve always thought that I would like to come back as MY cat! All that snuggling and kissing would work for me!

  78. Florence Arey says:

Hi Susan….I’m new to this but have always loved your artwork and cook books, which I own. Now this too to enjoy!!! I’m a happy girlfriend!!!!

  79. Laurie says:

i totally agree with all your Downton comments. Not to change the subject but are you watching T Great British Baking Show that airs before Downton??? Omg.. Itn is a feast for the senses! The music, the colors, everything including Thant dreamy Paul Hollywood… Swoon! It is an amazing g show I look forward to watching every week!

  80. Margaret Harke says:

Here in the San Joaquin Valley of California, spring has come in the form of 60 + degree weather, robins in my yard eating the ripe fallen olives, daffodils and flowering quince blooming. This doesn’t mean that all of our cold weather is over. We have had freezes in March, but it does mean that the worst of the cold weather is probably over. All we need now is rain, rain, RAIN! Lots of lovely spring rain!
Yes, I agree, good bye Miss Bunting! What a mean spirited rude woman she was.Hope we have seen the last of her. Tom deserves better.
And Mary, what is wrong with her? She just wants all the men to love her, but isn’t willing to make any kind of commitment.
Each week of Downton Abbey just gets better and better, but I know all too soon it will be over for this season, probably in about 3 weeks. Can they solve all the problems in that amount of time?

  81. Mary/Indiana says:

I’m so enjoying your snow from afar…….just cold here in Indiana with only a dusting of snow!
Downton was so good on Sunday (good-BUH Ms Bunting!) but I’m worried for Anna and Mr. Bates……..the police keep coming around and making me nervous! Your wild Turkeys may be a good September calendar picture….you could paint them skinny and then paint them fatter in November! LOL. Just Kidding!

    • sbranch says:

Really! That Mr. Green had to have spent MUCH more time in places other than Downton. Why don’t the police go THERE! (PS you are bad 🙂 )

  82. Anne in NH says:

Love everything about your house and environs…cats… birdies and squirrels. (we have many, also) and well…about Downton Abby…wondered also why Edith left the door open. Too many dark corners for lurkers! I think the next time she goes to the farm…they have left …taking Marigold with them! By the by…how did you make it snow in the picture of your house? Stay warm!

  83. Kelley S. says:

Love your snow pictures! Would love to be snowed in by the fire. When my tuxedo kitten, Jasper, sits in the big window to watch the birds and squirrels, he makes the funniest little trilling/clicking sound. Does Jack do that?
Like the other girlfriends, I’m so glad Miss Bunting is history. Hopefully Tom learned some lessons with that one. Didn’t you love it when he called her out for insulting his late wife and daughter when she made rude remarks about “those people”? I think we should call Julian Fellowes and beg him to please give Edith something productive to do and a m-a-n. All her moping about is getting old. My favorite will always be the dowager. She really knows how to pin people. In this last episode, I really loved it when Mrs. Hughes and Mrs. Patmore worked on Mr. Carson. He can be a fuddy-duddy, but I love him. Wish he was running my household right now! Adore the British Baking Show. I thought I was a pretty good baker until I started watching them. Out of my league. Stay warm and keep the news coming from Smallville!

    • sbranch says:

Really! Is that really “baking” — it strikes me as structural more than anything.

      • sondra fox says:

Kelly, I have a Himalayan female cat, named Sheba. She’s an indoor cat. I leave sliding glass doors open for her to enjoy some of the outside world, while sitting inside. She sits & watches birds & squirrels. She makes similar sounds, as your cat does. Sounds that I only hear her make when she’s viewing birds. I’m sure if I’d let her out she’d be a hunter. (Sandy from Chihuahua Flats)

  84. Linda Matson says:

Oh, Susan! We SO think alike. If I wrote the scripts — Mary will realize that she and Tom are a good match. The times are changing! And, forgive me if I am wrong, but many times, when a woman was a widow, her husband’s brother would marry her. In this case, Mary is a widow, Tom is her dead sister’s husband — they would make an excellent combination and could run Downton together. I hope the writers of Downton will take the risk of doing this!!

  85. Julia says:

Hi, am I the only one having trouble getting your blog? I can’t get it from
my own favorites. I have to go through someone else’s blogsite. Crazy.
Anyway, thanks for the little snowstorm that I can play pretend with. That
I am there. Also, went to a Super Bowl party and missed Downton, But I
see I can count on the girlfriends to catch me up and I’ll have fun this
    weekend watching 2 episodes.

    • sbranch says:

Not sure what might be causing that, Julia, but I have to say, last week we had some trouble with the provider, but I think it’s all back to normal now.

      • Julia says:

Thank you a bunch. It did start last week and I was able
to fix it myself. Once in a while I’m smarter than I think
I am. I couldn’t abide not having YOUR blog. It’s one of
the joys that I look forward to.

  86. Denise in NY says:

How is it that your latest post is always my favorite?

I love photos of the squirrel, the birds, and Sir Jack! My Aussie used to beg us to let him out so he could bark a squirrel up a tree.

Oh, I can’t stand Miss Bunting! Obviously she didn’t grow up around her Grandma or Aunties because she has the most horrid manners! I learned all my manners from my Great Aunt: How to sit with a dress; to do mental math and only take my portion and not more as a guest; and not to take from the candy dish unless offered. My dear Aunt Grace would have said that Miss Bunting grew up in a barn.

I love that Downton Abbey has included a Russian Jew to its story. My husband’s family had to leave a very nice life in Russia because of the Pogroms, but my husband and son are here because they did..

  87. Sharon Penney-Morrison says:

Weeelllll, what do I think? I think Mister Flirt Alot with Cora, is not that handsome! Not sure why she is flattered, except for the fact her hubby does not romance her. Shame on him!! Edith just needs to bring her kid home!!! They will get over it, anyway I think Edith’s lover is probably married and giving her the run-a-round. Mister Barrow….poor, poor man. What is he injecting himself with? Truly I am at a loss. Tom and Mary? Oh, that would be delightful, but not appropriate in their circle of snobs.
Love the show, and watch it every Sunday evening.
I would love to see more mice, squirrels, and little critters on your calendars. I buy 2, large for my kitchen, and small for my studio.
    hugs…keep warm

  88. Janet in Rochester says:

Sue, your writing about the 2016 calendars reminded me of something I’ve meant to mention. I always buy myself the mini-calendar each year, because its size is perfect for the side of my fridge and I can always see it from the dining room, where I usually work during the day [I give the mini-version to my sisters, SIL and niece every year too]. But this year I was gifted with the big calendar too, and a few weeks ago I noticed that these two calendars are NOT the same! There are different drawings for each month between the two! I’d always assumed the “mini” was just a smaller version of the big calendar – what a great surprise! I even checked to see if I had accidentally gotten different years but both were 2015s! Wow, in my book, that is “over-and-above-the-call-of-duty.” You could easily have done just one set of paintings to be used for both, but you didn’t. And after all the calendars you’ve done over the years, it must be getting “challenging” to come up with new ideas each year, so remembering that, it’s even more impressive. PS the big calendar will be inserted [page by page] under the glass top on my desk. Much more pleasant to see than the wood. Love your spot-on drawing of Jack too. PS – Rochester finally got a “goodly” amount of snow yesterday, between 12-18 inches. We look remarkably like the Vineyard right now, and I can’t wait for it to melt and reveal now-sleeping crocuses. Take care and keep warm – more snow coming! ❄️❄️

    • sbranch says:

I could make them alike, I thought about it, but decided, no. Only because I like everything to be special.

      • Rhonda D. says:

And that is just one of the many reasons we love you Susan….you make everything so very special. Now I find myself trying to make things in my life just a bit more special. You’re a good teacher!

        • sbranch says:

So great to know that we do have the power to do that in the little important ways that add up to a lifetime of special things.

      • Cheyenne Renard says:

Take care dear Jane , now that you have snow. I know i dont have to worry bout it here in the desert. Its been cold n damp but usually by the end of Feb it starts to show signs of spring. Did you see where the ground hog bit the mayor it scared me but the mayor just looked at the ground hog and said some thing like oh well. Take care i sent you a email back . Love and blessings i will have to get both calenders Love Cheyenne from Henderson Nv

  89. Robyn Brown says:

Thank you for a lovely visit in the snow. I skipped the parts about Downton because I’m behind. I didn’t want any spoilers. I have DVR’d them but haven’t had a chance to watch them yet. Work and school keep getting in the way (sigh). But I’m getting there.
I do love the clothes they wear and the furniture and oh, just everything about the show. As much as I hate the B’s (Barrow and Bunting)the show wouldn’t be as interesting without someone to hate.

    • sbranch says:

I’m so glad you skipped it — so sorry, Robyn, I always imagine I’m the last on my block to see it.

  90. I can sigh at last because of your new post, teasing us with Spring and all. It was another fabulous, did I mention ‘fabulous’ post. Thank you Susan! Loved seeing Jack and QV Girl Kitty. Such a diva! Now about Downton:

I am wondering if Edith would abscond with Marigold and Tom to America to start life anew. Hmmm…something has to give. She isn’t the only one with secrets after all. Now Cora, you little tease. Poor Lord G. is besides himself. Mrs. Hughs, Anna and Lady Mary could all win an Academy Award with their performances before the law. Tense. Even I am believing them!

Off to check on dinner. Stay warm and cozy. (PS: I am so excited! I ordered the white Swedish hearts from SBHOTH.) Little bits of happiness, with love, from me to me.

  91. Robyn Brown says:

p.s. have you watched any of The Paradise? I enjoyed that very much!

    • sbranch says:

      A little!

    • Jean says:

I chose The Paradise, based on a novel by Emile Zola, as my Brit Drama to watch, over Downton Abbey this season, believe it or not! From 1971-1975, I adored watching Alistair Cooke introduce Masterpiece Theatre’s Upstairs, Downstairs, starring Jean Marsh! I find Julian Fellowes’s writing pales in comparison. His eye candy of dresses, hats, jewelery, and glorious table settings are divine, but as for character and story line , give me Emile Zola’s writing any day!

As for Mary, girlfriends, please don’t be so harsh! Recall how Barrows led the way to her bedroom for a foreign royal to force himself upon her before dying in her bed! Edith further hurt her own sister , when upon learning of this, wrote to the royal’s embassy informing them of this truth, thereby further tainting Mary’s reputation and prospects for marriage! It was unfortunate Fellowes could not continue with Matthew. The contract for the actor who played him was up, I understand, as they were such a good couple!!! It was here I began to
stop watching and found The Paradise with its love story!!

      • sbranch says:

Interesting . . . love hearing your take on it . . . I love Mary and used to really NOT like Edith, but now she is SO pitiful that I can’t help but wish something good would happen to her!

  92. Karly says:

    Susan!

I am thrilled to learn that I am not the only human being alive that believes that Mary and Tom would make a great couple. I mean, they’ve already overcome their adversities toward each other, they essentially are business partners and work well together, and they have two of the cutest darn children that I’ve ever seen. Match made in heaven, no? Unfortunately, like you said, I guess maybe it wouldn’t make sense for Mary to pursue her dead sister’s widow … Regardless, I couldn’t be more thrilled that Lord Gilligham is out of the picture – I had a feeling he was sketchy from the start!

I adore all your Downton comments and recaps as it makes me feel like I am talking to one of my girlfriends about it.

Stay warm, and cheers to a great week!

    • sbranch says:

Plus they are both serious people. Who care about the future of Downton in a more profound way than the others do.

  93. Charlene says:

Hi, love DA too. I love the clothes and the house and the cast. Edith should take her child and forget what everyone says. She is smart and has a job and can care perfectly well for herself and the child. Glad the school teacher is gone. Think they can come up with little better character for Tom. He needs to find another Sybil. Mary is not sweet enough for Tom. I am not a big fan of Cora. She is a little mousey for me. However, I think Robert is over the top with is chauvinism , it is her money that helped him have DA to begin with. If you like the fashions on DA another show to watch is Miss Fischers(?) Mysteries on netflix.

    • sbranch says:

You are so right, she is smart, has a job, could get a cute apartment in London! You are perfectly right about it being her money. Will look for Miss Fischer.

  94. Cindy Tuning says:

Does anyone else think that this season of Downton is just a tad bit boring? The clothes are my favorite part of this timeline. The details of that era are magnificent. The snow is lovely but I can’t wait to see snowdrops and violets popping up from the ground. Until then store bought flowers and PBS will have to do!

  95. Michelene says:

I, too want Lady Mary and Tom to get together. And I second that good riddance to Miss Bunting! But poor Edith. Doesn’t anyone care for her. No one ever has much nice things to say to her. I feel very sorry for her. She is so alone.

  96. Marla says:

Susan, You have the perfect location for your bird feeders under the arbor of wisteria. What type of wisteria do you have?

Your squirrel photos are adorable & so is Jack watching them. Last winter we had a blonde squirrel, named her “Blondie” (of course!) & had fun watching and photographing her.

I just came in from filling our bird feeders & suet feeder. Funny how fast the birdies fly in as soon as those feeders are full. I had a vocal chickadee in the tree alerting the neighborhood gang that the buffet was open for business!

About Downton….I can’t believe Edith can keep little Marigold a secret much longer…or can she? I don’t trust that vile Thomas and hope he doesn’t cause harm to Anna and Mr. Bates. To end on a good note – I’m with you on loving the fashion. The picture you posted of Mary’s dress & headband is gorgeous!

    • sbranch says:

“vile Thomas” 🙂 Our wisteria is purple. It was here for years before we bought the house in 1989. If it has a name, I’m not sure what it is. My favorite thing about it is that in the spring, when it just starts to thaw, seeds pop off of it and hit the glass of the windows!

  97. Elizabeth says:

I wish we had even half the amount of snow that you have. Here it is February 3rd and I have crocuses blooming in my yard and today it is 57 degrees! Salt Lake City is going to be hurting for water come summer time.
I love Downton more with each episode. The clothes (men’s and women’s), the Abbey, the drama, it just gets better and more enthralling. I’m frightened of what’s brewing for Edith and Marigold, I don’t think it will go well at all if Rosamund and Violet go through with their plans. Thomas might be a necessary evil. A villain is needed to keep things from becoming too sweet. I find it interesting that whenever someone tries to be nice to him he figures they are as mean as he is.
Stay warm and keep flipping hair ties for Jack!

  98. OH! Susan! Your posts are like Downtown! I love to look at them. Question- do you have filler pages for some of your older scrapbook journals? I need a few more pages…..

    It is the squar-ish size.

Then another question. I love your art. In fact there is a suncatcher star I ordered off of an etsy site that has the norwegian look to it and reminds me of your border.

The site is called Piggy and Dirt and they can take material and lacquer it behind a star and there you have your custom made star.

Do you have material or a way to order your border in paper and then I could send it to them to have a custom made star?

Also, it is my bday month. Leap Year. What kind of art would you do for us poor souls with no bday except for every four years? I was always sad when everyone thought my day was in March.

My heart was belonged in February!!! So I would pout. I want to make a custom Leap Year B-day. I just wonder what it would look like and need your input!

Oh! And I had to take a picture of your ground hog on my wall on the calendar because that is what I am looking like after being on prednisone so long!

Sad. Ugh. It’s raining here in Idaho and I’d kill for the snow you are getting so my son could have some nice powder to ski on! What is the deal? This weather is crazy. We are the ones known for snow! : )

    Amanda

    • sbranch says:

I have a nice thing for you Leap Year Babies next year, because it’s YOUR Year! Finally! Now you don’t have to be 9 anymore!

    • Tawni urrutia says:

Hi Amanda! I have a February birthday, and I have so many friends that are februbabies too. We all say leap year Feb 29th people, are part of the Feb Fam hands down! So Happy Birthday month to you!❤

    • Tawni urrutia says:

      Good evening Sweet Sue!
I love all the action at your feeders! We have the cutest little goldfinches here. They are adorable, but whoa they really put the food away…they fit in perfectly with us!
So I’m wondering this about DA, an episode or two ago Cora told Mr. Art Dealer Scumbag that her father was Jewish. Now we meet Rose’s new man…Jewish. And, the additional plot line about the Jewish expulsions from Russia. Combine that with the little hints of the “thugs” in Germany that apparently have something to do with Michael’s disappearance and I think I’m seeing an ominous collision! As for Ms. Bunting, goodbye, good luck, good riddance! My hearts hope for the next DA wedding is for it to be Mr. Carson & Ms. Hughes!
I love this forum for all the girlfriends to hash over this gorgeous show!
      ❌⭕❌⭕,

      • sbranch says:

Me too, I was all set and ready for their courtship when Downton ended last year with them barefooted in the water together!

  99. Raquel Silies says:

So glad to know that I am not the only one glad to see the backside (not literally of course) of Ms. Bunting. She and Tom were quite ill-suited in my book. I do wish happiness for Mrs. Crowley though. Not sure about a Mary-Tom union, think it would be rather creepy myself. Would so like Edith to find someone. Oh, just can’t wait until next week. Hope Barrow gets his comeuppance.

  100. Lynn Marie says:

Oh my goodness…….the scene on the stairway with Barrows and Baxter when she asked if the shots were helping and he said,…”Well I still don’t like you.” Couldn’t you just slap him one?!! And she has been nothing but nice to him–of course maybe there is a reason for that–maybe she has got something of her own to dish out after all his meanness to her. On a Downton Abbey side note: did you all know that there is a Downton Abbey fabric line?!!!!! I saw it last week at the fabric store and my eyes almost popped out of my head. What to make? I will think of something.
