Shield Thyself

Okay, let’s get it over with (I’m a little upset, don’t mind me), but first a warning. I’m about to blatantly talk about Season 6, Episode 4 of Downton Abbey. Shield thyself if thee wishes to remain clueless. MUSICA And for you who are new to this Blog, looking around and deciding it is a Downton Abbey Blog, that isn’t all it is . . . just for now, because so many of us are watching the series with avid uncontrollable interest, especially me, so I just have to talk about it! Click on some of the icons at the top of the blog, and you’ll go lots of other interesting places. So, what has me so upset?  WELL!!!

IMG_5167It starts out okay. Love the dress and the gloves, they go so well with the fireplace and the ornaments on the mantle. Tom looks happy, but then . . . who walks in?

IMG_5182

Eeek! It’s the dream shatterer. (Mary’s dream isn’t shattered, it’s my dream that’s the problem.)

IMG_5170Henry Talbot, the frivolous egocentric race car driver has returned. So nice to be able to talk about someone so badly and know that he isn’t real! I’m sorry, but he is just not my cup of tea. I see him as a problem to the future happiness of Tom and Mary. If she goes with him, they are only half of what they could be. Not him. Her. He could never be as good with children as Tom is. Can you see him as Lord of Downton Abbey? Might as well flush it down the drain. Good thing I’m not Lady Mary’s butinski Mother, I would have to nip this in the bud immediately and send her to Siberia or something.

IMG_5171

Maybe Tom did eat an extra hot dog or two when he was in Boston, is that so wrong? Mary still seems to love “her brother”(how could she say that? Oh, you mean because it’s almost true?) as much as ever and is perfectly willing to share her Downton Duties with him. The connection remains. But the flirting between them . . . not so good.

IMG_5175Even Henry’s aunt, Lady Prudence Shackleton (visiting mostly to irritate Violet), says Hanks’s prospects are “adequate but not overwhelming.” Hmmm. I just don’t like him. Race car drivers are playboys, everyone knows that. Please God make Julian just be throwing us (me) off the trail.

IMG_5261

She tells the playboy how completely uninterested she is in cars and that, as far as she’s concerned, it’s the same as collecting guinea pigs in Peru. He tells her that’s because she wasn’t “taught properly” about “cars” and acts as if he would be the perfect teacher. Please. Am I the only one who notices that he has a very narrow head?

IMG_5260

The restaurant they went to was wonderful. Look at the carpet.

IMG_5264

Just gorgeous. I want to go there for dinner!

IMG_5272

Henry is impressed that Mary works (Tom thinks it’s normal). That’s because he never will. I think he will soon turn sexist on us, which I don’t think Mary will put up with . . . but for now,

IMG_5275

They are flirting, grrr. Must Learn To Accept. It’s only a tv show, it’s only a tv show. My favorite line from Mary this week, “All we were taught was French, prejudice, and dawnce steps.”

IMG_5177

This episode, down seems to be up and up seems to be down and everyone is rethinking their lives, as in “why am I here?” Mary, Daisy, Tom and Barrow all said it. The only person who didn’t of course was the Dowager Countess because a. she already knows, and or b. she doesn’t care. Almost a food fight at the table over the hospital. And Donk “drank too much port.” Hurry up ladies, join the 20th century, we are going to need that hospital!

IMG_5291

The Dowager takes her passport and goes to the kitchen for the “first time in twenty years” and doesn’t even leave a trail of crumbs to find her way back. Brave woman. But the whole upstairs had to go downstairs to join the jolly group in welcoming home Carson and Mrs. Hughes, who now, as Mrs. Patmore says, “knows the mysteries of life,” and despite that is keeping her maiden name to solve the problem of two Carson’s in the house, leaving everyone to exhale in relief that they don’t have to remember what to call her. The newlyweds looked happy, and out came my favorite white bunting again!

IMG_5162

The other people who seem to know where they’re going are Edith and Lady Rosamund. How Lucky Edith is to have her, and did you notice, Edith drives! Of course she does, thoroughly modern millie. Look at the size of that steering wheel.

IMG_5206  Love these two together. Sense and Sensibility. You all probably know that Rosamund is Robert’s sister and the daughter of the Dowager. She is just such an interesting character.

IMG_5181

Love this dress. Love the glass. Love the sparkle. Love the swinging earrings. Love the whole thing.

IMG_5289

Love these two together too. Baby on board. At least one, but two would be better. Hint-hint dear Julian.

IMG_5225

Mary also expressed not knowing where she is going or what she is doing with her life, but note dismay and instant rescue mode she went into when she saw her best friend Anna was in pain. She wasted not one moment, hasn’t got a drop of dilly-dally blood in her entire body . . .

IMG_5237Boom! Get the car Tom while I lie to my parents and Bates, and OFF they go to York. Mary gets her doctor to get up in the middle of the night and he stitches that baby right back in there, and voila!

baby lamb

IMG_5285

Happiness that shows in a million dollar smile. I ask you, if you were going down on the Titanic and you had a choice of getting into Mary’s boat or getting into Edith’s boat, which would you choose?

IMG_5209

I would not get into this boat ever. Another person fretting that he doesn’t know where he is going, but Barrow seems unable to stop himself from doing evil deeds despite admitting that he does care what other people think of him. He shows it by “outing” the charming ex-house maid at luncheon, which hurts no one but himself. As Miss Baxter (who has her own problems, which I am certain Mr. Moseley, aka Dudley Do-Right, will solve, then marry her) said to Barrow, “You are your own worst enemy.” How true. Who said the butler is supposed to talk to the guests? I didn’t hear anyone ask his opinion. I think in real life a butler could get fired for this. If there was a real life anywhere around here.

IMG_5202

Anna with her baby glow on, loves Gwen, and we do too: a. for her good works with Hillcroft College, but b. because she gives all the credit for her success in life to Sybil, endearing her to the Crawley’s forever. Was especially happy to know she was married when I saw how much Tom liked her!!! Whew!

IMG_5239

I think we came this II far from losing Daisy this week.

daisy border

IMG_5241

Everyone was freaking out when she took off her apron and went upstairs to confront Cora, better known as Her Ladyship, to get her just deserts re: Mr. Mason and Yew Tree Farm. She almost ruined everything with her unwillingness to put up with even one more second of perceived unfairness, and was about to attack Cora for promising the farm to Mr. Mason and then reneging. Which we all know she didn’t do.

IMG_4922 But thanks to darling (but ill, soon to be well, we are sure, not to worry) Robert, who intervened and spilled the beans just in time . . .

IMG_5280

Daisy dodged that bullet, and now her Mr. Mason has the farm!!! Another pair of happy people! You Go Girl! I hope they open a Country Bed and Breakfast.

daisy border

IMG_5257

Then Daisy and that cute footman, Andy, made twinkle eyes at each other . . . Andy, who pointedly said,

IMG_5255 “Country life is what I’m after.” This is looking good.

daisies

They can raise daisies! They can name their daughters Petunia, Delphinium, and Bluebell.

baby

IMG_5315

Sad part came at the end when Mr Carson went to say goodbye to his room . . .

IMG_5316

His bachelor bedroom, where I guess he probably lived for 30 or 40 years. I wonder what he is thinking? Life, going too quickly?

IMG_5319

But I loved how he

IMG_5322

kept his little name tag. This is a very sweet man. Mary would even do better marrying him than that playboy. Except Carson already has a wife. Oh well, we’ll just have to see what happens next Sunday!

IMG_5105

But speaking of real life.

IMG_5109

We had the most gorgeous blizzard here a couple of days ago . . . because, guess what?  It’s winter!  And that’s what we do!

IMG_8957

It’s still beautiful but now it’s sunny and white! You need sunglasses to look at the rooftops!

IMG_5098

And here we are, where we always are these days in our studio working away. I have such a terrible deadline with the printer (three weeks!!!!) . . . which I have to make, if I’m going to get to all these book signing events and meet you!  Check it out . . . More events have been added, and there are still more to come. It just gets better all the time!

border flower

IMG_5086

But I have the kitties and I have Joe. He feeds me, and he surprised me with those roses. Perfect counter action to a blizzard. And I have the story in my book which I love more all the time. Our book. It really is. The roses, by the pink roseway, were congratulatory because I heard again from the movie people who are requesting an option on the new book for a movie or a TV series! They sent a contract! So it’s still on a burner somewhere out there. As the nominees for the Academy Awards always say, in the category of Impossible Dreams, “it’s an honor to be nominated.” I realized the other day that the actress that would play me would probably be about three years old right now, with the speed these things go. So no one should hold their breath! But it is wonderful to know that you are on my side!

Off I go to the dream factory. Hope you all have a fantabulous day! Downton Abbey Forever! XOXO

What will we do when Downton is over?! The beauty of those sets are just dreamy! Here in the Chicago area there was a wonderful show on the beautiful Chatsworth House before Downton began. It caused me to pull out my copy of a Fine Romance a re-read a bit last night before bed. Have a great day Susan. Keep warm!

    • sbranch says:

I don’t know what we’ll do! I guess I’ll have to get in the car and drive across the United States in order to forget! 🙂 Thank you so much Laura, you too!

  2. Nicoline says:

    Hi Susan,
A lovely monday post, yeah! I hope you are coping with the huge amounts of snow that have fallen…Here, last week it was freezing so that you could almost skate on the sidewalks, now its like spring! Blue sky, birds singing and almost 15 degrees in (southern) areas of Holland!
Good luck with making the deadline and best wishes
    nicoline

  3. Elizabeth says:

A movie, how exciting!!! I’m volunteering at the Sundance Film Festival this year. Just thinking Martha’s Vineyard, Isle of Dreams may be on the roster in a few years! Congratulations! And to think I bought your first cookbook back in the 80s.

  4. Chris Wells From Knickerbocker, W. TX says:

WOW! A loaded Downton, a loaded blog, movie rights and a blizzard! Does it get any better in Smallville!? When Mary called Tom her brother I could hear you scream all the way down here!!!! Yes beware of men in fast cars (I can personally attest to that! LOL), maybe Mary needs to have her heart broken to come to her senses! He’s right there Mary…the love of your life right under your nose! Other things seem to be working out, Daisy and Mr. Mason, really starting to like Edith, and I think both sisters are capable in the lifeboat! I would get in with either one! They are stronger than they look! And remember it is only 1920’s!!
My favorite picture of your storm, those tiny, spectacular frozen ice crystals on the window pane. Warms my heart!

    • sbranch says:

I was afraid of that scream being too loud. Now I know I probably was heard from coast to coast! I like Julian, he takes you UP, he takes you DOWN. But where will the pendulum Land in the End? We will see! xoxo

    • Susan Morgon ( an Ohio gal in SoCal ) says:

I think we all screamed as one – Brother?? Noooooo! Open your eyes, Mary!

  5. Ginger from TX says:

So excited to see that you are coming to Austin!!! Never imagined you’d get to Texas, much less Austin. It’s on my calendar ~ can’t wait!

  6. Betsy in Pennsylvania says:

I may be too hopeful here Susan but did you notice the LOOK Mary gave Tom when he was off on the side talking to Gwen? I’m not giving up! I want Mary and Tom together. xoxoxoxo

  7. chris consentino says:

oh, dearest Susan!! I had rather “planned” that you would visit today, so, after reading all the “newest” comments from last week’s visit….I went back up top, just to check. wow. there you are…right on time!! rather unfair of us to count on such, because we all know you ARE on a deadline….but, thank you! oh! thank you! here in the Shenandoah valley, we got tons snow…rather unusual for here. DC got gob-smacked!! wow. gorgeous, but brings its’ own problems! we’re not yet plowed out, so hubby is pacing!! Saturday nite….about 2 or 3AM, he woke me to see the moon washing right over our faces!! wow!! rather a romantic gesture!! and…we’ve been enthralled with a mr and mrs cardinal at our feeders. not tons of them, like you have, but….enuf. well, everyone, enjoy the gorgeous-ness of it all. take care, keep warm, cozy & safe!! cannot BEAR Downton beginning to really END!!!! oh, dear. xo

  8. Regina Carretta says:

Downton is extraordinary! I think our Lord Grantham has a bleeding ulcer, as you notice his bouts of pain happen in stressful situations/conversations….there is a fun after-show on PBS/online from Houston PBS called “Manor of Speaking” – you can watch online…a panel to discuss each episode, and always a guest from “Across the Pond” via phone interview – I think you’d enjoy…..stay cozy….and thanks for the great reads!

  9. Kathleen S says:

I couldn’t wait to hear your take on all of it! I was thinking last night how much enjoyment this one hour show gives to so many people! Transports us just like a good book! Speaking of which………onward!!

  10. matty says:

Tom? Brother? Stop it, Mary! I could have smacked her jowls, as we say here in the South… the very frozen South…. who sent you the remainder of our blizzard…I have to watch each episode twice — once for the story and again for the sets… my gal pals and I are enchanted with lamp shades! hahaha You are coming to Asheville! Yay! That is only three hours from here.. and there is a lovely old inn (The Grove Park — you must stay here!) and The Biltmore (so Downton, American style) and a terrific yarn shop (Purls Yarn Emporium)… You are on my calendar and can’t wait!

  11. Colleen says:

Hi Susan! We had great snow in NYC this weekend. Had the crockpot going 24/7. Loving this season of Downton. The festive decorations in place to welcome back Carson and Mrs. Hughes were my favorite! Just finished “The Fairy Tale Girl”. Couldn’t put it down. Can’t wait for the one! As far as the tv movie – so exciting! Who would you like to see play you? I think Danica McKeller (Winnie Cooper / The Wonder Years) looks a lot like you. : ) Have a great day.

  12. Rhonda P in Woodson, TX says:

My daughter is moving to the Austin area next month!! What good timing! I’m 4 hours away but now I can visit her and see you in person!! So excited, can’t wait till June! Thanks for coming to Texas.

  13. “Uh, oh,” I said when Henry Talbot walked in. “This is going to upset Susan,” while secretly gloating my hypothesis might be right after all that these two might get together.

I was very upset with Daisy. I don’t have the benefit of having watched seasons 3/4/5 to fall in love with her. I do not admire her chutzpah one bit because she doesn’t think before she speaks! And what’s up with Barrow SPEAKING to a guest!? He IS his own worst enemy. There were other ways he could have brought Gwen’s “secret” to Lord Grantham’s attention.

And I’m not understanding Mr. Carson’s strong feelings about leaving his room. It was HIS idea to get married. What did he expect–they’d move into that room? Of course, I’ve never been put in that position to choose between someone I love and a place I love–yet. I’m wondering if you will be revealing your feelings in your book about leaving your little cottage after Joe came into your life. Perhaps your telling of it will help me understand.

  14. Susan K. says:

We will all be suffering from withdrawal pains when Downton Abbey is over. I’m going to have a Farewell Downton Abbey Tea Party so my friends and I can commiserate together!
So excited to see the Austin date! I know you like tea, so when ya’ll are there you should check out The Steeping Room. It’s actually on the same street as Book People. It almost has an Asian feel to it and they have tons of kinds of teas, lunch and dinner (we just had tea and scones that day). And next door to it is Penzey’s Spices with all kinds of spices, herbs and seasonings.
    Can’t wait til June 18th!

  15. Bets Kirby says:

Hmm – I think ol’ dad will need emergency trip to hospital with the latest technology – that will finally change the dowager’s mind when her dear son is saved. Just thinkin’.
Not sure about Tom and Mary – not sure he could put up with her. But then, I really don’t much care for her. Oh well, as we know, it’s just a story…

  16. Nancy says:

    Susan,
I’m going to disagree with you over Tom and Mary – just a little. Tom loved Sybil so much and she was so kind to everyone no matter who they were or what there station in life. Mary can be rather snobbish – except when it comes to Carson and Anna. She is particularly unkind about Edith and should learn to be more supportive of her. After all, yes, she does drive! Love it. And she is an editor. Quite something for the twenties! I think she (Mary) loves Tom as a brother but not romantically and I believe Tom is still so in love with Sybil that it will be harder for him to move on. (Just my thoughts…..smile?)
The one other little moment I noticed was hope for Barrows. After he tried to humiliate the former maid, Robert said the difference between him (Barrows) and Carson, is that Carson is kind to people. That seemed to speak to Barrows and there may be hope yet – I’m hoping anyway.
I am looking forward to seeing how it all irons out in the end. I believe, no matter what happens, we will all be satisfied – as long as they all make it to the end.
    Blessings

  17. Deb says:

Oh Susan, you are so funny with your Downton commentary! Now I’m really going to make you scream. Have you ever thought about Tom and Edith???? 1) He knows about Marigold and is fine with it, 2) He’s been her friend and supportive through everything (baby, working, jilted), and 3) Wouldn’t THAT just show Lady Mary! After all her put-downs and nastiness to Edith, who could blame Edith if she went after Tom herself! Perhaps we’ve missed a trail of little bread crumbs Julian has been leaving…..

  18. Kathy George says:

I will miss tuning into Downton but we have an upcoming movie or series to look forward to. There is no doubt a movie should be next!!!! So exciting.

  19. Rosanne Murphy (Oregon) says:

You have a printer deadline, just like Edith! I do love how Edith has blossomed. Good point linking Robert to the need for a hospital! I hadn’t thought of that. I was probably too busy oohing and aahing over the gorgeous gowns again. I wonder if you might be a little biased toward Mary’s dashing new beau because of a certain fast-car driving playboy person from your past?? Anyway, Downton is too wonderful for words. Love your roses, and your little pointed one at the end of the post. I have loved how you paint roses every since the Summer Book and have wished for a framed picture of them on my wall. Just lovely, and Joe is lovely for giving them!

  20. Susan says:

Sorry to disagree, but I’ve never thought Tom and Mary would make a couple. He is her brother, as she has stated, and they are family. Henry (not Charles) is a handsome man to take her mind off of agent-type matters. He’s easy on the eyes and he seems to be assured of himself enough to take her on.

I thought it was a great episode. I especially loved the way the visit with Gwen went, in spite of Thomas trying to “wrong-foot” her.

Thanks for your Downton recaps! they are great!

  21. Susan from Michigan says:

Love your thoughts on Downton Abbey. I’m thinking that because Mary’s beloved husband Matthew died in a car accident, she will never embrace the life style of the race car driver. That could open her eyes to Tom. Here’s hoping!

  22. Clare says:

hahaha I’m still wiping away my (laughing) tears – you really hit the mark, Susan…..”dawnce” steps, too many hot dogs, twinkle eyes, a head too thin. Wish you lived next door. Thanks for writing to us while being so busy. It’s truly appreciated and so enjoyed. xo

  23. Becky says:

Good morning from CA. I’m hoping something good and grand will happen for Thomas Barrow to redeem himself to his peers and the upstairs family. Mr. Fellows, hear my plea!!! He deserves it. He wants to be liked and admired (even though he has a history of conniving and scheming) and he is a gay man, in service, in the 1920s. Ouch! Fingers crossed for him.
Now, about Robert. I think his pains are going to be a “red herring” for us. We’ll be concerned for him, when some script twist blindsides us. Ugh! Remember Matthew’s car accident? And Sybil’s death? As the English say….Crikey! Like you, I will really miss this family of characters and the beautiful setting and time period. It was all so simple, slower, and refined. At least Downton is and that is our fantasy/reality.
Thanks for the snowy view out your window, and the cute shot of your fur baby. I have a large orange cat (Charlie Cat) wrapped around my feet as we speak, with his paws encircling my ankles so I don’t sneak off while he is napping. We are lucky to have such unconditional love in our lives. Have a great day Susan! Looking forward to next Monday’s post.

    • Becky says:

I almost forgot to mention my favorite pieces from the wardrobe shop this week. I loved, loved, loved Rosamund’s blue velvet gown and Mary’s dressing gown was so lovely. Note to self; look for a black background, floral patterned dressing gown.

  24. queenmum says:

Oh Downton, how I shall miss thee! But truly…has Cora EVER had such an acidic look as she did when finding Daisy in the hall? Noughty, naughty, Daisy. I thought (about Cora), “Well, you never should have left America.” It was nice to see Anna smiling; I had gotten tired of the tears and looks of woe.
As far as the movie….perhaps the asctress who played Sybil could play you if they hurry and do the project! She would be perfect.
    xox,
    queenmum

  25. Cindy Tuning says:

I know you want Tom and Mary together and don’t hate me for this but it would creep me out. He SEEMS like a brother to her and I just don’t see any chemistry there. However….LOTS of chemistry with that cool cucumber. But don’t worry. It’s just a challenge he sees like winning a race and Mary just needs to get a spring in her sprocket and she’ll see him for what he is and will continue to be her independent self. The lampshades!!!! That’s what I’ve been loving this season. I’m hoping Lord Grantham’s tummy troubles is just an ulcer.

  26. Wendy Louise says:

    Hello,
I am with you all the way on Downton ! I sure hope you are right and we are in for some more
wonderful surprises like when Tom came back, that was so perfect. I love surprises that get me to smile form ear to ear. I just love the buntings too. One of my winter projects is making my own, I have been collecting material for it, so wish me and my sewing machine luck. My machine is an old one and I love it. One of my favorite classes in high school was home economics. I learned so much in that class that has carried me through life. Like cooking, balancing check books, and making clothes. I sure wish they still taught that in school, I think it would help the world if they did. Keep it more grounded in what is really important😉.
Thanks Susan for your wonderfulness, it makes my days even brighter.
    OX, Wendy-Louise

  27. Patricia in Philly says:

    Susan!
I’ve bought my tickets to see you in New Hope! Finally, finally, you are coming to our area! Cannot wait to meet you in person (even though I am fortunate to have a handwritten note from you, dated 1990!)
I think the Deschanel sisters, Emily or Zooey, would make for good “Susans”
in your movie/tv series. And maybe, that adorable wee lassie in Downton who plays “Sibby” could play your younger self! (just thinkin’ out loud).
We had a wonderful time in the blizzard, and your blog shows all the beauty a snowstorm like that can bring.
Enjoy your days at your desk, drawing away, with Jack, Joe and Girl by your side! How lucky you are!
I so look forward to your new book…

  28. freda says:

Good morning Susan I too am loving Downton Abbey . Wouldn’t Daisy and Andrew make a sweet couple but goodness she needed a smack last night . Did you notice Marys hairdo at the resturant with the narrowheaded man lol. Love your descriptions and I would love to see your book become a tv series

  29. Ann says:

A TV series!! How great that would be. Lauren Graham would HAVE to play you. Love the Downton chat, but I did not like Daisy last night. The kitchen maid would never confront the Lady of the House like that. I wish Mr. Fellows would remember things like that.

    • sbranch says:

Yes, Daisy had the persona of a fifteen year old girl who’s parents say she can’t go to a party. Love Lauren Graham, but she’d have to cut bangs!

  30. Schotzy says:

I have been enjoying your thoughts on DA so much… ever since my daughter gave me A Fine Romance for Christmas..I do love it so… she grew up enjoying Christmas from the Heart of the Home with all the darling artwork and your charming typeface… so when she saw this book, she knew I’d love it…and I do!!..Then I found your blog and am hooked.. Now regarding DA… I must say Matthew Goode was a perfect DeClan in Leap Year, but as Henry ,,, I totally agree… I dont wish to see another car crash, but perhaps something will happen to grab Mary’s attention and her eyes will be opened to our dear Tom…. so what about an extra hot dog… he is adorable.. but I’m sorry, Daisy drove me mad…. all of her caterwauling… it is a miracle it all worked out for her poor father in law….and perhaps, that other footman and she shall marry and they can all work the farm and turn a nice profit for the Granthams. But anyway, it is going to be a sad day when we bid our favorite show adieu. for those who may not know, the Monarch of the Glen was a masterpiece series from several years back.. starring Julian Fellowes.. set in Scotland, it does have a certain charm.. Thanks so much for your writing.. the time you put into this lovely blog, and we all look forward to hearing from you in all forms of media,….. a movie would be amazing!!

  31. Gigi says:

Yay You! What an awesome prospect — seeing (hopefully soon!) a happy (mostly), positive, fun, beautiful movie of your wonderful life. Your books have always brought beauty and humor & goodness to my life, and I’m so grateful to you for that.
    Brightest Blessings,
    G

  32. Gail says:

I thought Mrs Carson-Hughes blanched when his lordship proposed calling Mrs Hughes. No need to inconvenience the upstairs folks by making them learn a new name.

Mary has no interest in cars but assumes all potential suitors are interested in her landed gentry life. Her self absorption is limitless

  33. Sheila says:

Oh Susan, how exciting for television series, am keeping my fingers crossed for it…(Masterpiece Theater, don’t overlook this one!) Looking forward to seeing you at Vromans…with a big group of girlfriends!

  34. Lori C. says:

You are SO right on about Charles Talbot (the only thing he has going for him is his last name). What a spoke in the wheels he is! Maybe that’s what needs to happen when he’s racing on the next episode! Rawther don’t theenk much of ‘im. Definitely not Downton standards! However, while we’re on the subject – wouldn’t Jessica Brown-Findlay (Sybil) play YOU wonderfully!!!?? Congrats!!!

    • sbranch says:

      hmmmmm. Interesting!

      • Lori C. says:

We’re getting our tickets to the “Tea in Prescott” For June 11th as I type this. Can’t wait. On a side note – the Willow Tree Manor House that this will take place at – is the home that they filmed Junior Bonner (Steve McQueen – Robert Preston – Ida Lupino). Steve McQueen was so sweet! (Melt) – they were filming at our Palace Bar on Historic Whiskey Row – I was 15 years old – and Steve came out and got me and took me back in – and stood me up on top of the bar with him – and we watched them film a fight scene.

  35. Lynn Marie says:

I do think that Mary is just toying with that race car driver. You know when at the table she said she hopes he makes a pass but it won’t get him anywhere…tee hee! Goodness gracious, I didn’t know what to think when Gwen from “downstairs” was invited to dinner. I think she was afraid to speak for fear of being given the boot right back down to where she came from but “the times are changing” and everybody will just have to learn to deal with it. Thanks for the lovely recap. I am off to dream of the movies ☺.

  36. Pat Mofjeld says:

Well, are you taking us all along on your “after-Downton-Abbey-ends-road-trip-across-the-country”? Congratulations on the movie/TV contract. Now we all can be thinking of who will play you. The problem is that Diane Keaton is too old… 🙂

  37. Downton is really very addictive, isn’t it! I am sure I will have withdrawal when it ends. Hopefully another wonderful period drama is already in the works.
It was a perfect sort of snow here in CT as well. Lovely powdery stuff that blew all over making drifts and keeping us snuggled inside. No sleet, no power outages, and very little ice so far.
What wonderful news about your book! Congratulations! It really is amazing the things that can happen! So happy for you both!

  38. Laura Jenkins says:

    Henry Talbot…..Charles Blake….

I know you are angry…but, Mary needs a love interest who is exciting and gorgeous…not her “brother”….she’s too clever and gets bored easily…😂😂. At least Tom will always be in her life….xoxo

    • sbranch says:

harrumph. I am holding out until the bitter end. I can accept it if it goes against me, but until then, I don’t seem to be able to stop wishing.

      • Laura Jenkins says:

wonder if it is in your subconscious desire to refer to Henry Talbot as Charles…that maybe she turned one Charles down, so possibly another! I was smitten with Mr. Goode in Leap Year..so, I find it easier to see him wooing our Mary!!

  39. Janet W. from Mt. Lebanon, PA says:

“…for a movie or a TV series!” — How absolutely wonderful to see you have so many opportunities open because of your talent and loveliness. ***Congratulations, Susan!!!*** Even if you/they don’t go through with it, not everyone can say they’ve had “this” offer. Your blog keeps getting more and more exciting. Which is really your life! *WOW* Thank you for these extraordinary ways you share it with us.

  40. Shannon (Pennsylvania) says:

While watching Downton, I find myself frequently thinking “wonder what Susan’s comment on this will be?” Well, my dear, you never, ever disappoint! “Maybe Tom did eat an extra hotdog or two in Boston, is that so wrong?”lol 🙂 I truly hope the Carson’s honeymoon went well. What a poignant scene it was when he took a last look at his bachelor bedroom. He is a dear, sweet man. Yay movie option for your book! So exciting! And, hubby just reminded me to tell you “thank you” again for your Christmas Coffee Cake recepie. I made one Friday before the blizzard moved in, we polished it off yesterday morning…our justification is that we need extra calories to deal with 30 plus inches of snow!

  41. Lynn Reed says:

Tom is far too kind and sensitive a man for Mary. Charles Blake was the only man to challenge her to get over herself. Bring him back! You are so right, we do view the characters as if they are real! Thank you for my morning pick me up with your blog.

  42. What an exciting post! Just what I needed for a Monday morning! 🙂
Yep, that “brother” word bothered me a lot too. It’s going to be an interesting season. I really want to like Barrow. He’s misunderstood and wants to be loved and a part of things….but just can’t help but be mean.
LOVE the thoughts of a Susan Branch movie!!! 🙂

  43. Kat on Rose Creek Farm in East Texas says:

Love ‘watching’ our beloved Downtown Abbey with you & all our friends! And am quite beside myself that you’ll be here June 18! Road Trip! I know we’ll be coming in from all over! Perfect combination You…Joe…Book People…in Austin Texas. Where the motto is Keep Austin weird! Let’s get this Party started! Keeping you in my thoughts as you work so hard for us.

  44. Grammy says:

Hahahahaha….loved this post! Loved reliving last nights episode with you, you are so funny!!!

  45. Kim says:

Love your re-cap. I couldn’t help think that the honeymoon didn’t live up to Mr. Carson’s expectations. He didn’t look like a giddy groom, he looked a wee bit remorseful.

  46. Mary S. says:

Another fun, excellent recap of Downton! How I love reading your comments – I laugh all the way through them, they’re so delightful! Thank you again, Susan! And I love seeing the beautiful pictures of your snow, and Jack, and your beautiful roses! Love from Mary S. In Fresno, California

  47. toni baumgard says:

You did a wonderful job of covering it all! Left me nothing to say except thank you. Thank you also for those wonderful book marks. I am in the process of making 18 of them (Ribbons and Glitz) for my Girlfriends in my Greeting card Group. We make the most beautiful Greeting Cards and have a lot of fun! I treasure Girlfriends and am happy to be part of Susan’s Girlfriend Group. toni

  48. Lacy says:

Remember it is only a television program. (smile)
Mary, Mary, Mary ~ what to do with Mary. She’s never been one to have her head on straight since her nose is always in the air. Mary has a nasty, hateful streak in her that shows whenever Edith is around or when others are receiving her papa’s attention. I believe it’s very clear she will end up marrying Charles Talbot. After all they are a matched set.
Dear Tom can do far better than Mary.
I must say that in fantasy you can create twists and turns to suit the writer and entertain the viewer. Julian Fellows does all that and more. I will certainly miss our Downton Abbey.

  49. shanna says:

So, I’m sure that I missed something earlier in the series, but why is Mrs. Hughes’ maiden name Mrs.? Was she married before? If so, then why would she not know “the mysteries of life” by now?
    Anyone?

    • I believe that “Mrs.” is a courtesy title for senior female servants.

    • Debby says:

Shanna, I have wondered about that too. Mrs. Huges was not married before, and Mrs. Patmore has never been married either. It must be some English rule that you address women in certain jobs as Mrs. Maybe someone in the know will tell us. Debby

    • Regina Carretta says:

Shanna – I believe that in that period of time, it was part of the proper rules of the upstairs/downstairs set-up, where the title for women ladies’ maids was “Mrs.” … remember O’Brien was also referred to as “Mrs.”….whether they were married before or not…

  50. Kelley S. says:

Happy Monday! Glad you, Joe and the kitties are OK in the middle of The Blizzard. Isn’t it exciting that most of us girlfriends (except the West Coasters) are tuned in at the exact same time to Downton Abbey? It’s so much fun to know we are all glued to the TV, giggling and gasping at every little thing. I love your recaps, and this one is no exception. I predict that Robert will have a life-threatening but survivable health crisis that resolves the hospital harangue. Who knows? Maybe Anna will have Baby Bates in a new hospital! To answer your question: I would get in Mary’s lifeboat because Mary always gets her way, and that means she’d get rescued. With Poor Edith’s luck, her boat would sink. :LOVED Gwen’s memories of darling Sybil. Certainly brought tears to my eyes. Totally agree that the car man is most inappropriate for Mary. Still not tired of the pecking between Danker and Spratt either. Danker is way more fun to hate than Thomas, and Spratt always looks so put-upon. Can’t wait for the next episode. Must watch this last one at least two more times.

    • sbranch says:

I think Edith is capable of sinking the boat herself, but that would never in a million years happen to Mary. Mary reminds me of Scarlett O’Hara. As God is my witness I will never be hungry again!

      • Cindy Tuning says:

I think if Mary was on the Titanic, she would have sprung into action the second she felt the speed increase to full speed ahead and march up to Captain Smith telling him he’s living in a fools paradise to think he can bring that ship in to NY ahead of schedule considering the iceberg warnings.

  51. Susan… Wonderful post and so many things to say but I’ll stick with just one… Doesn’t ANYBODY remember that Mary’s first husband died in a CAR CRASH?!?! Shouldn’t that be enough to disqualify this speedy interloper??!? Really! 🙂

  52. NANCY JO says:

    Hi Susan,
Yipes, three weeks. Well we all know you can do it. Now a possible movie! You just never know what life will bring. Getting up every day is pretty exciting. SO BIG QUESTION. WAS MRS. HUGHES MARRIED BEFORE?
    Nancy Jo

  53. Beth L. says:

I wonder if this “egocentric race car driver” Mr. Talbot will be sub-consciously off-putting to Mary as he holds an ominous thread of connection to her dear Matthew’s manner of death….(just giving you a tangent to hang onto!).

And my favorite DA quote this season was from last week’s episode…
… when Mary apologized to Carson for trying to bigfoot the wedding, to which Mrs. Hughes remarked, “M’Lady, Mr. Carson would forgive you if you hit him with a brick.” haha….so true.

Excited to see you’re coming to Asheville!!! You’ll LOVE Biltmore…our DA!!!

    • sbranch says:

I will take all the tangents I can get! We are still working on Malaprops in Asheville, hope it all works out.

  54. Susan Morgon ( an Ohio gal in SoCal ) says:

Oh, how I enjoy your weekly recap! It’s so much fun to read, and I love how you interact with us all. You’re the best! Now, I am not giving up on Mary and Tom, not just yet. It just takes Mary a while to see what’s right in front of her. Did you notice when the family discussed giving the farm to Mr. Mason, that when the subject of telling Mary came up, Tom said he would handle her? Perfect! She needs a bit of that, doesn’t she? And next week, who is with her at the race? ( Things never go well for Mary’s men in cars ) Tom! He is always there. I hope it’s a bit of foreshadowing. Twinkle eyes – wasn’t that cute? Daisy needs a fellow too. I have to laugh at the family, though. How hard is it really to remember Mrs. Carson. It might take a bit of a while, but if I were Mrs. C, I would not want to be called Mrs. H! So we have another week behind us. What will we look forward to when the series is behind us? Well, there’s that series or movie offer you have. Something else for us to dream about.

  55. Kathleen from Philly says:

All morning I’ve been checking to see if you had posted on Downton yet. I heard that scream in Philly, echoing my own. I think Julian had Mary say that just to throw us all off the scent. I get momentarily confused when I see the actor (who plays Charles Talbot) flirting with Mary because he was a love interest on The Good Wife last season. Throws me off, such a flirty cad! Otherwise, I think all the stories are slowly leading to a hopefully satisfying conclusion. I loved hearing Gwen recounting Lady Sybil’s part in her success. I’d forgotten all the little bits but Sybil really was the catalyst there. Nice twist to the story, Julian! That is what drives the story here, all the rich details. I do feel a little sense of urgency in the plots but I guess that is necessary to wrap it all up in due course.
Well, Philly finally got a big snow so it was very pretty here this weekend. I love the quiet when it snows so much that the only thing you can do is wait it out. I think our lives need more of that quiet. It compels me to cook and knit.
Made French onion soup one night, fish chowder the next and then had the neighbors in last night for a baked ziti casserole after the big dig-out.
Best news of all, I have my ticket to the New Hope signing in May! Neighbor Carol & I plan to make a day of it. She introduced me to you, for which I am forever grateful. xoxo

  56. carmel says:

Try not to worry and have some confidence that from Mary’s recent comments like it’s better to be single than marry the wrong man (paraphrasing) that she won’t chose that awful Charles. I’m thinking that she may be the one who may not end up with wedding bells ringing at the end of the season, but will be just fine. I loved the restaurant and carpet too. Exquisite! I thought of you when I saw the wedding bunting up again. What a sweet home coming. I’m sure I’m alone in this but Daisy often gets on my nerves and I can’t wait when the story shifts to someone else. At least you’re not watching “Mercy Street.” I was so upset during parts of episode 2 last night. And the story is based on true events from journal writings, etc. from people who staffed that hospital. There’s no doubt that meeting important deadlines are difficult. However, you always not only meet them, but the results as we all know are absolute top quality. I am looking for a quote from St. Francis de Sales that has always helped me. When I find it, I’ll pass it along. And Downton’s characters may be fictional, but it’s hard not to care about them as if they’re very close friends. You’re not alone.

  57. Barb from Ohio says:

Ups and Downs on Downton last night! I’m not surprised they brought Talbot back, think there was good reason he appeared in those few episodes before. Don’t really like him very much either, so he’ll have to do something spectacular to win us over where Mary is concerned. I’ve always liked Edith more than Mary, always have been cheering for Edith, glad she’s taking hold of the magazine, planning a woman editor! Scandalous! Mary has been wonderful toward Anna, as well she should be. So glad she helped save that pregnancy so we could see such joy on Bates and Anna’s faces. I keep thinking Mary’s attitude toward Edith will soften when she finds out the truth about Marigold; fingers crossed.
I was on needles and pins for Daisy for a bit, but Lord Grantham gave her the news just in time before she put her foot in mouth. Cora seemed to know Daisy was going to give her a tongue lashing. My daughter likes Daisy and didn’t want to see her have to leave either. Might be something there between her and the footman. He likes country life he says, well, if he could marry Daisy eventually they could run that farm after Mr. Mason is gone, way, way in the future I hope.
Wonderful reminiscing and tribute to Sybil they all gave after Barrow outed Gwen. (no pun intended) He really seems to continue to do things just to tick people off, can’t help himself. Lord Grantham noticed and told him so! I first thought Gwen didn’t want her husband to know she’d worked there once, since she has come up in the world, but she went on to tell the whole story about that and Sybil helping her. Surprised the family, especially Lord Grantham. Carson reflecting and closing one chapter in his life, taking his name tag from the door, tugs at the heart!

  58. Hi Susan,

I would love a movie about your life but only if you played you. No one else would interest me. Please see what you can do about that!

  59. Heartsdesire says:

Great post today, Sue, and I agree with everything you said. I love that Lady Edith is turning into such a free spirit. Driving a car, editing a magazine. She really has come into her own, hope she meets someone that doesn’t take any of that away from her. Lady Rosamund is a good influence for her as she seems very independent herself. How sad that there are only a few more episodes of Downton left. I’m going to miss everyone. Poor Robert, what is going to happen to him? Hope he makes it to the end. And Mr. Carson was so sweet looking over his old room. Lucky Mrs. Hughes to have him for a husband.
Loved looking at your snow pictures, especially the kitchen window with the frost flakes. Can you imagine what Jack would do if he was allowed outside. Good luck making your deadline and happy, happy snow day.

    • sbranch says:

Yes, I so agree, lucky Mrs. Hughes. I know he will be her guardian angel! I walk Jack out most days, just so he can see. The wind, the snow flakes, the whiteness . . . He is shocked and reaches for the door jamb to pull himself back in. Makes me laugh every time!

  60. denni in MN says:

Susan, oh, Susan – Can you believe that Mary actually said ‘Brother’ when referencing Tom? Ouch!! We can only pray she comes to her senses!! What a treat the hospital battle is with all the verbal banter we get to enjoy. The Dowager isn’t done, yet!! And, neither is her daughter!! May the next 3 weeks go smoothly for you, all cozy indoors, to complete your book. (Soon to be: Movie Script!) Best Wishes!!

  61. Laura in Sacto Ca. says:

The handsome race car driver is a total snob. I hoped they would bring him back this season for a love interest. Those two need to get a room. They have super chemistry. But my heart tells Lady Mary to love porky Tom.

    • sbranch says:

I so agree. Everything in life has come easy for him. For Mary too, but I think the difference is that she sees it. They do have chemistry. Irritating. Yes on Porky. Gotta be that way for the good of almost everything.

  62. Lorraine from White Plains, NY says:

I think when Downton is over, we should synchronize our DVD players and re-watch every episode — only one per Sunday! — and then talk about it here on your blog as though we haven’t seen it before and have no idea what’s coming next! Just think how much longer we’ll be able to enjoy it! Whaddya think?

  63. Paula says:

Hi Susan! I was hoping for more of you re-caping Downton, love it! I keep trying to just enjoy the time we have together with it and to stop dwelling on….It’s Ending!! I agree, don’t really like that Charles, he seems like the same sort of guy as the older guy she was going to marry, only tied up in a younger, racier version. Was wondering if you knew in the Feb. edition of Good Housekeeping Magazine there is a little spread on Joanne Froggart (Anna), she looks so cute, they have her in different adorable outfits, great locations. So pretty with her long hair down. So excited about the possibility of a movie or series on your new book!! My imagination if going, they’d have to include A Fine Romance cause that’s part of your MV life, right? Also they could do flashback episodes to the Fairy Tale Girl times. Just Wishing, Congratulations!! Sweet guy you got surprising you with those roses, beautiful color. Take care, don’t work too hard.

    • sbranch says:

Actually, they ARE including it, in fact all three books!

      • Paula says:

That is so wonderful for you (and us!). You must be so excited, very happy for you. You deserve it, you bring so much happiness through your blog and of course the Books!

        • sbranch says:

Thank you so much Paula. I’m really not holding my breath. But it would be so much fun to go through this process.

  64. Betty says:

Thank you, thank you, thank you, for recapping Downton Abby…Last night’s show flew by. I love your names for Daisy’s babies, and the fashions are perfect in every way. Please keep writing on Monday after the show. I laugh all the way through your posts. Keep writing and I will keep reading.
    Joyously,
    Betty

  65. Jennifer says:

Hi Susan! How I love your commentaries on Downton each week! I had to laugh last night. As I was watching and heard Mary refer to Tom as her brother, I thought to myself, “Oh, I’m sure Susan did NOT like hearing THAT!” Thanks so much for the love, time, and work that you put into your posts and blog! It always brightens my day! Stay warm! 🙂

  66. Sue SS says:

Tom is really much too nice for Mary. She would eat him up and spit out the bones as my mother used to say. I still question her involvement with a race car driver after her dear Matthew died in a car crash, but I assume JF knows what he is doing. Now, Edith, what can he do for Edith?

    • sbranch says:

I see that he has a quiet strength that nobody could chew up. Edith… the hair and clothes, the job, the apartment, the child, we are heading in the right direction!

  67. Trisha says:

Dear Susan, Thanks for the great comments about last night’s Downton episode……what exactly is Julian trying to do to all of the loyal fans? I feel the same way regarding Charles Talbot…….not my favorite person for Mary! Daisy is driving me crazy but thank goodness for Lady Rosamund! Love the relationship that she has with Edith. Wanted to know if you would like me to drop in the mail for you a copy of “Lady Almina and the Real Downton Abbey”. ……have finished it and it was an interesting and fascinating story of the legacy of Highclere Castle. Let me know and I can drop it in the mail whenever! Congratulations on your movie offer……how exciting! You must be thrilled and probably trying to imagine who would play the lead characters……does Joe have any thoughts? Well I will let you get back with your work and looking forward to your first stop in Plainville and also the finished product! Take care and carry on!!

    • sbranch says:

Joe has lots of thoughts! So nice of you to offer your book, but you should keep it! I’ll see it in the future when the book is done and I have time to read again!

  69. Debby says:

Susan, congratulations on the movie/tv series contract. I mean come on!!!! Someone got smart because your book is perfect for either. I can just see the scene at the table when your parents are talking in arf and arfie about the bomb shelter. And then your dad filling it in with the the trash. I can just see it. And meeting the Beatles and the trip with the the tiger. Perfect.
Okay, Downton Abbey. Question? Where are the Carsons living now? Don’t worry, Fellowes is just playing with us..I don’t think Mary is going to fall for the car guy. But how could she marry her dead sister’s husband??? Loved the lady/house maid scene. She was so sweet and Thomas was so bad…again. Remember, Edith learned to drive some type of machinery on the farm that she was helping out on, I think on the second season? Lot of people introduced and brought back this episode. Daisy and the new footman would be good, I did see them dancing at some celebration, maybe when they celebrated Mr and Mrs Bates getting off the murder charges. (I still want Alfred to come back and save her tho. Doesn’t look like that is going to happen.) how much snow did you get? Congratulations again, I’m proud of you👏👏👏 Debby

  70. Louise says:

    Susan

I have only one thing to say about Downton Abbey last night, I nearly fell off my couch laughing so hard, when Mrs. Patmore said about Mrs. Hughes “knows the mysteries of life”. God I am going to miss Downton Abbey , I love it so much.

    Louise

  71. sylvia in seattle says:

I’d like to be a fly on the wall when Julian Fellowes is having cocktails with friends, laughing about how he toys with us! Such power he has. Tom is too nice for Mary. She would chew him up and spit him out. Just sayin’. How many more episodes do we have to get it all wrapped up??? I hope not too many things are left dangling . . . Was MRS. Hughs married before? Or did they just call her MRS for some unknown reason. That dinner scene was so much fun. Maggie Smith, the real person that is, inspires me. She just keeps on keeping on.
Love the snow pictures. SO envious – we are drowning out here with RAIN. BUT THREE WEEKS! YIKES! Good luck. ROSES. You are a lucky woman, but you know that I’m sure. I buy myself tulips quite often. What can I tell you.

    • sbranch says:

I have a theory that strong women, instead of butting heads with strong men, would actually be happier with someone who has a quiet knowledge of who he is and no need to show his power. It’s just a theory. Less head butting.

I don’t remember if Mrs. Hughes was married, I really don’t think so…but I think Mrs. was something they called people of a certain age. I could 100% be wrong!

      • Regina Carretta says:

        – I believe that in that period of time, it was part of the proper rules of the upstairs/downstairs set-up, where the title for women ladies’ maids was “Mrs.” … remember O’Brien was also referred to as “Mrs.”….whether they were married before or not…

  72. Christabelle says:

Bless you, Susan, for knocking out your latest recap at breakneck speed and doing so brilliantly!!! I could not believe when I went to check your blog that you had already done so. I think your anger/concern inspired you. Tom ate a hotdog or two, too many, and which lifeboat would you choose … priceless stuff!!! I think we all look forward to these recaps every bit as much as we do to the actual episodes. Brava!

  73. Georgie Bonsanto says:

    Sweet Sweet Sue!!!

A Television Series… A Movie… You have set the bar for dreaming BIG! Wheee!

How EXCITING! Just to have the offer is like going to the moon and back! Happy Dance right here in my kitchen 🙂 How wonderful of your dear DEAR Joe for getting roses to Celebrate. Isn’t he just the absolute BEST! We all know that anyone with the name Joe is a great catch!

Our thoughts are with you these next weeks as your paints get mixed and fly to the page by your expert hand! Take care of yourself. Do things that make you happy when you get up and stretch (yes… do get up and move around a bit). Have a piece of Hot Milk Cake and sit by the fire. Mmmm.

Know you are loved by all of us here. XO
We are all cheering you on. XO

    Georgie

P.S. Thank you for the DA updates. I love the idea about Daisies! And… I too am cheering for Mary and Tom!

  74. Jill says:

You might request Joanna Froggett to play you in the book into movie. That way, you could meet Anna. She could do an American accent, I’m sure. And for Joe?

  75. Jen from Michigan says:

Oh! A MOVIE!! A T.V series!! I have goosebumps!! I will keep my fingers crossed, and stars wished upon for you!! What a darling show it would be!! Squeal!!!!!!

  76. Tom eating too many hot dogs??? I had to laugh out loud. I thought the same but wasn’t sure. So happy Anna’s having a baby! I love your recaps. You go into a lot of work taking all of those pictures. I will miss this good and decent show.

I live in San Diego where it’s going to be in the high 60s today. I can’t imagine living where it snows!

  77. Charissa says:

Ha! Your post had me laughing all the way. I knew last night that the second that Talbot pranced in you were going to be upset and I knew you would really lose it when Mary used the word brother. So I laughed last night too. I was so upset with Barrow for reverting to his old ways, but my heart still goes out to him. He’s hurting:( And if Carson gets any more dear my heart might burst. Roses…. sweet Joe. I am so thrilled that you heard back from these Hollywood people. Can you imagine??? Your story is perfect though and I am so happy that someone else saw that too. Congratulations!!!! You must be so proud to even have been nominated:) How thrilling!!!! A fairy tale ending for The Fairy Tale Girl. Both the book and the person:):):):) xoxo

  78. KarenP. (Wisconsin) says:

First of all, I get SOOO excited when you talk about a movie of your book (s)!!! Who would play you, I wonder? Have you thought about that? I was wondering what you were thinking when Mary called Tom “my brother!” Did you notice, though, how close Tom and Edith are? Hmmm…..? I haven’t made up my mind yet about the race car driver. I just still love him from the movie Leap Year in which he was such an adorable man so I’m hoping it translates the same here. Mary is “working” the property management deal but she still loves the posh life and Charles can offer that to her. We shall see….stay tuned! I like Rosamund, too….how did she come out so level-headed and sweet with a snobbish mother like Violet!? (I love Violet, though…who doesn’t!) And my other fave is Miss Baxter. …such a sweet person. Thomas really likes her….she’s probably his only friend….not even HE is his own friend! Andy and Daisy…yep…that little gleam in her eye as she was thinking….hmmm? Wants the country life, eh? They will marry and run the farm with Mr. Mason. So much fun speculation. I do hope everything go’s ok now for Anna! Happy Day After Downton! xo

  79. Sandy H says:

that frosted window is magical! see you in Austin… can’t wait!

  80. Rosanna says:

Oh now Susan – don’t please don’t fret so much about Tom – and please don’t pair him up with Mary! No, no, no, oh no – not Mary.
While she may be softening a bit around the edges, she will never be Sybil – and that is exactly the point. While we would all like people to be happy again after losing the love of their life, it just isn’t always going to happen. But I’m sure Julian Fellowes will not leave poor Tom out of some happiness in the end.
I’m thinking the lunch visit with former housemaid Gwen with her story of yet another Sybil ‘miracle’ only highlights that Mary is NOT a good substitute!

All! I am concerned about Robert’s “discomfort” or whatever is going on with him! Remember the line last night where someone (Mary, I think…) suggested (jokingly) that Violet might outlive him?? I am TERRIFIED (!!) he may be this season’s casualty….let’s hope not!!

  82. Patti E. says:

I already put in my notice at work for a vacation day in May so my daughter and I can drive from Minneapolis to Cedar Rapids for the book signing. I can’t wait to meet you! 🙂

  83. Lori - California says:

I love your re-cap of last nights episode. Things are moving so fast and I wish they could slow down a little (delay ending the final season). I have some thoughts on what’s happening so far:
Tom and Mary – I really think he is too good for her (I know you want them together but I’m hoping they don’t).

Charles and Mary – I can’t see her having a future with him, especially since he is a racecar driver (I would think fear of losing a husband again, to a car accident, would be a thought in her mind). What does he have to contribute to their lives? I was so hoping Mary was going to end-up with Mr. Blake (I thought they seemed to have a little chemistry).

Mary & Edith – Makes me sad how mean Mary still is to Edith, she treats Anna more like a sister than Edith. (I would choose Edith’s boat for sure).

Anna & Bates – couldn’t be happier for them and yes, twins would be wonderful.

Robert – Oh, teddy bear Robert – hopefully the hospital modernization will have the technology/equipment/Dr knowledge to fix whatever is ailing him. If he dies I don’t think I could forgive Mr. Fellows.

Daisy – I’m glad she found her voice but worried that awful Ms. Bunting impressed her to much. I love how much she cares for Mr. Mason. Yes, Daisy, Andrew and Mr. Mason own a B&B!!

Barrows – UGH! I thought he was getting a little better but this season he has turned to his old conniving ways.

Baxter & Mr. Mosely – Poor Baxter, she is trying so hard to turn he life around and then he past come backs to haunt her. I’m glad she trust Mosely and think they would be great together.

Edith & Rosamund – love how they are so close (? d you think they look similar/alike – more so than he “parents” Robert & Cora)? Edith has come a long way and I am rooting for the happiest of happiest endings for her and little Marigold.

Violet & Isobel – I thought Violet would jump across that table and strangle Isobel (I chuckled through that whole scene).

In a dream world DA would never end, the stories could go so many different ways.

Like so many, I am home for a glorious snow day! We were about 45 miles off the blizzard band, but we received enough snow to have logs burning in the fireplace, hot tea, and time for reading, needlework and a snooze. I made my first prayer flag, using fabric, trims, my Nana’s buttons and other ephemera collected in thrift and antiques shops over past months. FUN! I could hardly wait to read your weekly Downton commentary. Charles Talbot is a snobbish bore and I would not want for him to “teach” me about “cars.” Tom is so much better. I’m glad you mentioned his weight gain. At first I thought there was something wrong with our TV screen. Weight gain and all, he can give me a “car education.” Someone better hurry and make a good decision about the hospital because I think Anna and Robert are going to end up there. How many more episodes? Not enough. Will there be a fairy tale ending? I hope so. What will we do when the last episode is over? Read your new book! I love, love, love your “take” on Downton. Perhaps your book/movie deal could take the place of Downton…

  85. Cynthia Avalos says:

I was hoping to hear from you today because of your Downton comments! I had to laugh out loud at some of your comments. I loved it. I hope Julian Fellowes plans on writing something new, equally fun to watch!

  86. Sharon in So. Calif. says:

Oh Susan, how I love your analogies of Downton! Could not stop laughing at your description of Henry, “The Dream Shatterer with a Narrow Head”!! LOL, I do not care for him either but I am one of ‘those’ who do not want Mary & Tom together. I just can’t get into the marrying of siblings husbands, even if ‘former’. Oh A MOVIE, I am thrilled beyond words ♥♥♥ “Congrats” is not a good enough word for this news, maybe OMG or am I dreaming I just read a movie contract in your blog!! WOW! So sorry for all of these ! points, really. Dreams really do come true, only because YOU deserve it. Much love to you from one girlfriend in So. Cali, oh next week we are supposed to be 78 degrees, geesh…….. kisses to Jackie & Girl too♥

  87. Hello,
I just love talking Downton with you. 🙂 It just makes me smile to go over the episode again.
Best to you with the deadline. Sending a HUG!
    Carla

  88. Suellen Dehnke says:

I thought of you too when Mary called Tom her brother. Haha. I love Tom but I’m not one of the many who want a match-up there. The new guy is SO smooth. I think it’s going to take someone like that to be a match for Mary. Someone strong and talk, dark, and handsome. No I didn’t notice his narrow head until you mentioned it. Now I’m sure that’s all I’ll see. LOL

  89. Sue says:

Hi this blog has been sent to by my pen pal in Colorado. I’m in the uk so have come to the end of DA. I don’t know what I will do with myself next Autumn without DA. I understand there may well be a film or movie as you folks say. I’m visiting Highclere house in July which I’m really looking forward to. Thank you for a pleasant time spent reading your thoughts. xxx

  90. CM says:

I luv & look forward to your weekly Downton re-caps almost more than the actual show! LOL.
What what??New Book-Movie-TV Series??? ….sign that dotted line!
Thank you for your uplifting blog! Stay warm. ~C

  91. Janet Hellmann says:

So happy to see you will be visiting New Hope, PA. So far, I think that is the closest you will get to Staten Island, NY so New Hope, here I come. I used to go there all the time when my children were little, now they have little children of their own and it’s time to go back. Can’t think of a better reason than to meet you in person!!!!! It’s on my calendar. I really enjoy the Downton comments. A show that will truly be missed by so many.
Enjoy that snow, it is so beautiful.
    Janet

  92. Ann Jane Koerber says:

Roses…..in the dead of winter!! What a guy you have dear Susan! A movie? Really? How very very exciting just to think about it. I think you are the perfect one for the role of “you”; however if you are too booked up I think Meryl Streep should play the part of Susan and Robert DeNiro the part of Joe. We are in chilly Naples FL for another month but there is no place like home! See you at one of your tour stops! Xoxox

  93. Kathy says:

When I was taking my noontime walk I was thinking TODAY would be a great day to get a Susan Branch blog post and find out how the weather hit there . . . and voila! Here it is! Someday I’ll actually start watching Downton from the beginning and then the Downton part of all this will make sense! I do love the photos though, even though I don’t know the story . . . YET!

  94. Donna Hardin says:

Couldn’t wait to hash Downton with you today! I am almost certain I hear you yelling at the t.v. When Charles showed up and all that flirting was going on! Lol

I find myself loving this season the best so far!

    Until next week…

    Donna

  95. Nellie says:

Golly! So glad I’m not the only one who sees Mary and Tom together in the end. They are perfect for each other. Charles is dreamy but not the one for our Mary! Carson would never approve of a RACECAR driver in the family. Indeed not.

  96. Grier says:

    Hi Susan,

I don’t like Henry either as how can Mary go for a guy who drives fast cars after what happened to Matthew??! I don’t think she and Tom should get together as he is her “brother” but I do favor Charles Blake. Remember him? I think it will be Henry though, like it or not. I loved that they brought Gwen back, really a nice segment and loved that she gave Sybil credit. It made even Mary stop and reflect for a minute or two. I love Edith’s storyline this season. The clothes are to die for too!

Enjoy your snow! Looking forward to your new book!

    Grier

  97. Jan Lane says:

Love Downton Abbey. We sit and watch it whilst drinking Earl Grey tea.

I don’t quite see Mary with Tom. I personally would like to see Edith with Tom, and Mary with that fellow she was in the pig pen with. She actually seemed approachable, happy, and real. Sometimes I feel that Mary considers herself to be so far above everyone else, that she would also make Tom feel inferior. He is too nice for her, as lovely and refined as she is.

I wish that Julian would create a spin off series, as there is so much that could be created with these fascinating people. I would like a story of real strength in the face of tremendous change, which would come with the changing times. World War 2 had a huge impact and it would be interesting to follow the folks of Downton Abbey as they embark upon the changes required.

Stay safe and warm in your lovely cosy home. Our snow has melted and we have sunshine here.

  98. Loretta Perkins says:

Love these commentaries on Downton, adds to the charm of watching the show!

  99. Lee says:

Susan, thanks for the play by play. I am surprised no one has brought up that Matthew was killed on his birth in a car accident. Maybe Mary will think about that later.
It was so nice to see Daisy smile….she hardly ever ever smiles. She played one of the step sisters in the current movie Cinderella. She was so cute.
    Until next week. blessings
