A SURPRISE

I promised you “a surprise” in my last post (about a hundred years ago, oh my goodness, I’m so late)! MUSICA (nice old Frank)🎶 I don’t usually start things off with a photo of me, but I had to make an exception to add oomph to my explanation for why I’ve been away so long! In the photo, I’m dressed and on my way to give a talk at Island Writes, but you may notice something not quite right.

Yeah, why is she wearing that black glove? What an odd-looking glove. Hey, that’s not a glove! No. It. Is. Not. It is a (stupid) cast for a broken wrist. A broken right wrist. The hand that does everything. So anyway, I broke it a little over a month ago while packing up things for the yard sale. Tripped over bags, hand-to-floor, caught myself, the end. Which also ended the infamous yard sale for this year. Ended almost everything, because I had no idea what all this hand did until I lost it. Besides typing, writing, and painting, it opens cat food cans, washes hair, signs books, holds a freaking fork, puts on earrings, uses scissors, deadheads roses, DRIVES, and chops onions. Hello. At first I couldn’t do any of it, I gave my brain a new kind of workout by practicing writing with my left hand, but one-by-one I’ve been getting things back. And Look Ma, I’m typing! I think I MIGHT get the brace off Sept. 14, my Doctor keeps little secrets to himself, I’ve learned, but I am hoping! It wasn’t a bad break, no surgery; I glowed like a 7 year old when he called me a “good patient.” It’s the little things in life. Yes, physical therapy will follow, but I’ve been doing exercises to keep my arms strong, so I hope normalcy returns soon. Thank goodness for Joe! He’s been taking such good care of me!

But I promised you surprises, and you’re going to get surprises! 🌸 Our Courage Charm has arrived . . . isn’t it wonderful? Gold with a streak of pink that goes all the way around. Pink, the color of nurturing, for yourself, and for others. The color of love.💝

It comes on its own little card . . . the charm is engraved with the words “Courage, Dear Heart . . .”💞

Thought you’d like to see my bracelet . . . I think I have them all so far!

And this? This is not for sale! This surprise of all four-seasons of my cups (which are all sold-out and no longer available anywhere on earth), is for the lucky person whose name gets drawn by Vanna in the next post! I told you I would have surprises! Just leave a comment, and you’ll be entered! It can be for you, or maybe you’ll want to take it apart and make four Christmas 🎄 presents out of it! Leave a comment!’Tis almost the season! Here comes

And this? This is for everyone! A brand new bookmark for all my Anglophile, Corgie-adoring, Queen-admiring girlfriends and the people they love! Just click HERE, print it on card-stock, have it laminated if you like . . . it makes a very sweet stocking stuffer or book-gift accountrement.(In case you’re new here, the bookmark is tucked into a copy of my book A Fine Romance, Falling in Love with the English Countryside.)

And what else? Oh yes, for everyone that preordered and waited so patiently, I’m thrilled to tell you the new cups are scheduled to arrive in California TOMORROW, on Thursday! And yes, I ordered extra so we would have some to last through Christmas, just in cases.The heart cup is another Courage item. The world is so wild these days, we need as much of this as we can get. And there’s another secret about this cup . . .💞

I didn’t design it! I designed a red cup with hearts on it which Joe thought was a little boring, and said, “Why don’t you make it look like champagne?” I said, naturally, “What are you talking about?” He tried to tell me, but I couldn’t picture it, was running out to lunch with girlfriends, and said, willy-nilly, over my shoulder, “Draw me a picture!” Because I know Joe is an artist even though he never does it. But I didn’t expect THIS. Champagne bubbles made into hearts. Of course I fell in love with it. My boy is a genius!

Very appropriately, this is Joe’s first cup ~ Champagne Hearts! He will very likely never do another one, not sure I can figure out how I tricked him into this one!🙃

I designed the bottom and the handle, so it was a group effort. From the Heart of our Home.💖 You’ll have them by the end of next week!👏

This one too! The Martha’s Vineyard cup, arriving at the Studio tomorrow, and in case you’re coming to the Island, it’s already available in the shop that carries my things here ~ which, by the way, has changed their name to Vineyard Arts Gallery, it’s still in the same place in downtown Vineyard Haven, and Robin still runs it. And one more by-the-way . . . another reason for you to leave a comment ➡️ Yes! I’ll be sending some lucky person their very own Martha’s Vineyard cup too! It’s an Autumn extravaganza!

This too! Leave a comment to win this Pumpkinhead cup! So far that makes three lucky winners and you only need to leave one comment to be entered for everything! Why you may ask? Because I can! (Writing now, from day after I published this post: Reading the lovely comments ~ can’t answer so many with bad hand, but reading 🤗, loving, sometimes tears, THANK YOU.💞 This is why. We are the world!) I detect a need for cheer and doing my best in this little world of ours, to make some of it for my Girlfriends! And, to make it more fun, the winner of this Pumpkinhead cup will also get a box of my Inspiration Notecards.

Hope you love them!

Jack also wanted me to let you know, in his own unique way (by draping himself on the thing I’m trying to photograph), that the 2020 calendars have arrived! If you preordered, you should have them!

Other good news, our teapot plates are back in stock! We’ve gotten lots of requests ~ sooo happy they’re finally here!

Great for holiday cookies, as a little serving dish and. . .

also looks great hanging on a wall!

And brand NEW, two night lights!

Blue dots on a scalloped porcelain shade!

And little flowers too!

You can read about them HERE.

I have soooo much more to tell you, but this is my first day back at typing and I’ve just been made a wee bit painfully aware, it’s time to stop! I’m only half done! Wah! Guess I will join Jack doing what we do best!

Still eating yummy whole food!

Have devolved to one-finger typing, left-hand ~ but one last thing, I’m reading this helpful book I think you might like.

Interesting book that reminds us of our lovely humanity . . .

We need to remember in our crazy world . . . also, from me to you💞, want to remind:

    Happy (careful) rest-of-summer!

    Warmly…Marie

    P.S. Jack…can you be any cuter?!

  9. Kathy says:

    Oh, Susan! How unfortunate to break your wrist, let alone your RIGHT wrist when you’re right-handed! You have such a good spirit…persevere…that’s what you do. Hope it heals up nicely and quickly. The give-aways look wonderful, and Joe’s rendition of champagne hearts is very clever. Thank you for the book tip; it looks very interesting. Happy end of summer…autumn is right around the corner. Thankful for all the seasons!

  10. ELISA GARRETT says:

    Always a ray of sunshine in my day to read your blog. Thank you for your spirit, Susan.

  11. Susan Kellam says:

    I hope your hand improves quickly! Sounds like you’re doing all the right things. I’ve had carpal tunnel surgery on my right hand twice and getting ready to do the left. I’m a quilter and hand stitcher so that gets put aside for awhile. I would so love to win one of these great giveaways! They are all adorable and I love the Pumpkinhead best of all!

  12. Deb in Wales says:

    oooops, seems like everyone I know is falling over or breaking something. Your wrist makes it number five or six now, I have lost count. Hope it’s mended soonest indeed, especially as it’s your dominant hand. Thank goodness for Joe to take care of you. I am sure you are a patient patient and well behaved, doing exactly what you must to heal the fastest.

    ~~~Waving~~~From Across the Pond~~~Deb in Wales xoxo
  13. Laurie A says:
    Thank you for creating a place of cheer in this troubled world. The night lights are fabulous! I’ll be sending good thoughts for perfect healing for your wrist.
  14. Ellen Seeley says:
    I’m glad you’re on the mend dear Susan. I so enjoy hearing from you! Now I’m off to order that beautiful cup designed by Joe…
  15. Sue in Denver says:
    Oh boo! I also broke my wrist recently and had a black cast! I used it as an excuse to go to Fantastic Sam’s twice a week and have my hair washed for me!! Hope you get it off as planned and that rehab goes well!
  16. Susan Havey says:
    Thank you Susan for posting your exciting news even with a broken wrist. You are an inspiration to all of us struggling with the issues of the world but still hanging on!! Happy almost Autumn as you watch the light changes. That Joe is a keeper if ever there was one. Hugs to him and sweet Jack as they nurse you back to Scintillating Susan Sparkling health.
  17. Nicole Pivec says:
    Not your typical tome of a post, but I am still so impressed! Sorry to hear about your hand! So very frustrating, but I’m glad you’re being a good patient; you will be able to attend to all that holiday decorating in no time!
    What a nice selection of goodies. Tell Joe he did a magnificent job (but of course you already have) on his cup. And those kitty paws. The grand “furnale” ( My daughter would walk out of the room on that one, but I couldn’t resist 😣🙄😀)!
  18. Alice Dennison says:
    Hope you are feeling better…. Love the blog as always.
  19. Rachel Scott says:
    Susan……………
    how could I leave only one word? Ha! NOT possible. I am glad to hear that you are healing, and typing, and I am hopeful that you are doing a bit of painting and writing. Having read your last three books probably 10+ times each, and looking though your cookbooks, when I don’t even need a recipe, tells me that I NEED another book from you ASAP. Ok, but only when you can do so pain free. So, get out of that cast/brace, go to physical therapy, and get back “to work.”
    What lovely giveaways….you are so good to us, so generous. Thank you. The night lights are so cute. I have already printed off the bookmark. I plan to attach ribbons to the bottom and send to two pen pals. And, I am looking forward to the new cups arriving on my porch. Tell Joe that I love the champagne hearts.
    The last photo of Jack, with his ears and sweet, white paws sticking out of laundry…..I want to reach though the screen and give him a cuddle.
    Thank you for your lovely, positive post….it is greatly appreciated.
    Love,
    Rachel
  20. Sherry Winchester says:
    Hello, Susan! Speedy recovery to you! As always, a most delightful, insightful blog entry. I always stop whatever I’m doing when I see you’ve posted a new one. A thoroughly enjoyable read! Lots of surprises, lots of new goodies, lots of love coming from you to us! How lovely! Thank you so much once again. I can never say thank you enough! A lovely end-of-Summer, upcoming Autumn to you, Joe and Jack!
  21. Kim Young says:
    The ship of beautiful creative things has arrived! Don’t you just love to see it all in person, right in front of you? The fruition of your hard work and inspiration? Then we get to order it and have it right in our cupboards and on or desks for joy and encouragement everyday!!!
    Joe! Champagne hearts! Bubbling love on a mug and in my FAVORITE color.Brilliant!
    Thank you for the post, I’m sure it was an effort with that clunky cast and wee winces of pain. You powered through for all the girlfriends! ox
    If you haven’t already, I am smack in the Middle of Anne with an E ( Ann of Green Gables) on Netflix. Talk about learning to appreciate the simple things….it’s positively heavenly and a perfect escape with very relevant themes for today.
    Keep shining your light. Its a blessing for us all.
    Kim
  22. Linda Michael in PA says:
    I’m so happy to see a new blog, but take care, dear friend. Don’t overdo it. There’s nothing like wanting to be creative (painting, stitching, sewing) and not being able to do it. Being creative feeds one’s soul. 💜 What a generous give-away! I have all four seasons mugs (CAN’T WAIT to use Fall). But it sure would be great to win them and give as gifts. Also, what did you use to hang the little serving dish? I have one which sits on my baker’s rack, but love the idea of seeing it on a wall. Notes on a Nervous Planet looks like a very thought-provoking book – thanks for the tip. xoxo
  23. Eileen says:
    Hi! I love that picture of the screen door with Jack sleeping. There’s something about old doors, especially the kind with the little hook latch. And I love cats, and ironing boards (if that’s what that is?) and that floral cloth, and the dappled light, and the view outside the door. sigh.
  24. Paulette Feld says:
    Keep up the exercising, but no matter, when that cast is off, it will feel different and vulnerable. After the boot was off when I broke my foot 10 years ago, I felt like everyone was going to step on my foot! It took a few days to get over that feeling.
  25. Vicki South of Arroyo says:
    I’m so sorry you’ve hurt your wrist. Thanks for trying to post; it’s a good post with lots of news. Healthy healing wishes to you, Susan! I’d wondered what was going on; it seems you’d disabled comments from the last post; I don’t Twitter, but I decided to check it as a ‘non-subscriber’ and I did catch your comment about the injury, which then explained everything.
    When I was a kid on a homemade skateboard (oversized, with many wheels, a two-seater; we used it like a sled up and down our hilly SoCalif neighborhood sidewalks, sitting on it, not standing as would be the usual; a crazy contraption), my right hand, holding on for dear life as I sat precariously on this downhill-racing ‘board’, got caught in the wheels and it tore off a couple of my fingernails (no broken bones). The phone call to the doctor was to wash off all the street grit with sudsy soap and then pour Bactine over the wounds. I’ll never forget it because I thought I was going to die right there with Mom at the bathroom sink; she persevered but, man, was I screaming.
    I couldn’t use my poor little overall bruised, raw hand for anything and was feeling cry-baby & helpless, so Mom got me to trying to write and draw with my left hand asap to get my mind off things (can’t remember after-‘pain’ but the right hand must have continued to hurt like hell; they didn’t have Tylenol back then; I wonder what they gave me for pain relief?!!). I did pretty good with the left hand (coloring with my colorbooks and sketch pad; block printing; we weren’t doing cursive/penmanship [handwriting] yet) because I think I was actually meant to write with my left hand from the start of my life although, back then in the 1950s, they would discourage it and switch the pencil back to the right hand. (I remember this from kindergarten; that they’d do that; I wonder why?) I was naturally (later) a left-handed golfer and batter and amateur tennis player; I always reach for things with my left hand first.
    Still, I shudder to think, today, of not being able to use my right hand for the most basic home & hygiene tasks; feeling some of your frustration just thinking about it, Susan. Clearly, this has delayed progress on your writing/book. Must be so flustering for you. Here’s to a good report from the doctor upcoming (and off with the splint/cast – – my 88-year-old neighbor broke her wrist earlier this year in a fall on asphalt, and she’s behind the wheel of a car again [don’t know how I feel about that, in general!] and picking weeds in her yard, good as new).
  26. dianne says:
    lurve those cups – all of them!!!
  27. So sorry to hear about your broken wrist. Thankfully it wasn’t any worse.
    Love your new designs for the cups. Joe is quite the artist. Take care and hope to see you soon with that cast off.
  28. Melissa says:
    There’s nothing quite like the first cuppa of the day in a Susan Branch cup.
  29. Gill says:
    Hope your wrist heals well and you feel better soon!
  30. Brenda Brady says:
    Sorry about the wrist! Hope you’re out of the cast and back to normal real soon.
  31. Susan says:
    To the sounds of silence I would add snow crunching on a winter night. Hoping for a lucky draw for me.
  32. Brenda says:
    I had wondered why you were quiet for so long but put it down to the busy-ness of summer. Poor you. It’s good that you are on the road to recovery. Lovely post.
  33. Nora Cavic says:
    Welcome back! And sending you good vibes for a speedy and full recovery! xoxo
  34. Sheri says:
    I’ve missed your posts and I’m so sorry about your wrist! Love the story about Joe’s cup. 🙂
  35. Loris Mills says:
    Ouch! for your right limb there. I hope it heals well and quickly.
    The new cups are all so beautiful. Head scratches and love to that sweet Jack kitty. 🙂
  36. Karen Whitehead says:
    So happy to see your post and know that you’re doing OK!
  37. toni says:
    So good to see you again! Looks like the wrist is on the mend. Take care sweet girl.
  38. Sheri from Idaho says:
    Oh, Susan, you have such a good attitude about mishaps like these. Inspiring. I hope you are healed up soon. You look adorable in that outfit. Pick me, Vanna!
  39. Monica says:
    So happy you’re back and on the mend! I just have to tell you I had my first “Pimm’s Cup” this weekend at a lovely Irish pub in Gettysburg, PA. Now I know why Joe loves them so much – they’re light and delicious!
  40. Karen says:
    Feel better…take care do yourself.
  41. Sharon Calvert says:
    Speedy recovery!
  42. Sylvia in Seattle says:
    Owee! So sorry about the broken wrist. I fell several times last year, but so far no broken bones. I have lots of padding. After quite a bit of analyzing of the situation, I figured out what I was doing wrong (Tripping on the bottom of my cane!) Hitting the floor suddenly (more than once!) can make one quite cautious! Wishing you a speedy recovery and smooth sailing from now on. Love Joe’s cup 🙂
  43. Judi says:
    Sorry about your injury and happy to hear that you are on the mend! I would be honored to be entered into the 4 season mug drawing…but, even more…the PUMPKINHEAD MUG. Love them ALL!
  44. Pat Bates says:
    Susan-
    So happy you are at least “semi-ok!” I was really getting concerned, not seeing a blog for so very long. Please let J & J continue to take good care of you after all, you deserve “LIFE’S BEST.”
    P.S. Guess that yard sale just wasn’t in the cards!!!😢
  45. Monica says:
    I hope your summer was good in spite of the broken wrist – so happy you’re back and on the mend – we’ve missed you! I had dinner at a lovely Irish pub in Gettysburg last weekend and had my first Pimm’s Cup – and it won’t be the last! It was so light and delicious, and made me think about “A Fine Romance.”
  46. Edith McAdoo says:
    Praying for rapid healing. Missed you!!
  47. Nancy Hussey says:
    Susan…so sorry to hear about your wrist mishap ! Hope you are healing very well and back to full use soon !
    Do you think any of your mugs ( the champagne hearts ( will be available in any stores on the Cape ? I just love it !! Happy almost Autumn !!
  48. Glo Utzman says:
    So sorry about your accident, but happy to see that you are mending well. I see that Jack continues his job of being completely adorable. Could just kiss those soft, furry paws!
  49. Debbie Boerger says:
    Oh, my dear, I totally am there with you re: hands. I had the Dupuytrens + carpel tunnel done on my right hand in February. Had a cast on it for 8 weeks, then an awful big blue whale removable cast for another period. I’m into my 7th month on that hand, and it is still quite painful. And….the Dups is back in my middle finger, same hand. Had another shot in it on Monday. Shot hurt, but it has relieved the pain somewhat. Will have yet more surgery in October. Something about ruptured something or other. Don’t care, just fix it!!!!
    And that isn’t all. I had my left hand repaired surgically 2 1/2 weeks ago, now in a brace after plaster splint removed. Could cook, but only with lots of sous cheffing from Tom. He also had to do the washing up. I managed to bag which ever hand was to be kept dry and do a one handed hair wash. But, Boy! do I miss my long soaks in my big old clawfoot tub. Takes 2 good arms to get out of it. Little things such as washing certain areas of your bod are really difficult. Bet you are raring to get into your tub.
    We’re still going over to Nova Scotia for a get away. 4 nights in a lovely old BnB in the village of Louisbourg, way out on Cape Breton. the French Fortress Louisbourg is near, and has the flavor of Williamsburg, without the original buildings. We’re staying in the home that belonged to the man who urged the rebuilding of the French fort in the 1800. Even staying in his master bedroom, The Draper Room. Then we’ll go back to visit Bra d’Or, on which sits Alexander Graham Bell’s home and museum. Also a very realistic Scottish village, with dwellings from the poorest of the poor in Scotland, on through the ages. Wonderful docents in costume who know everything. Also the things they did to support themselves. Will be fun. We do love Canada, even though we’ve done some of these things in camping mode years ago. Canadians really are as nice as they are said to be 🙂
    Take care, Dear Lady. And thank you for the fabulous cups!!! I’m getting the red heart one.
    Debbie in end of Summer Maine
    We’re all so glad you are almost there with the healing. I hear that broken wrists are the most painful things. And add insult to injury by not being able to use that hand. I have also learned why ancient people had such worn front teeth….they are great for holding and opening things, such as those packages of nuts or dried fruit that sort of zip up.
  50. Nancy Hussey says:
    Susan…so sorry to hear about your wrist mishap ! Hope you are healing very well and back to full use soon !
    Do you think any of your mugs ( the champagne hearts ) will be available in any stores on the Cape ? I just love it !! Happy almost Autumn !!
  51. Susan Brazeau says:
    So, so sorry about your wrist. I broke my left wrist (I’m right-handed) in June. Second day of vacation … in Scotland … required immediate surgery … two nights in hospital in Dundee … left with a metal plate and 9 screws! I’m lucky to have a Joe in my life – his name is John and he took great care of me too. We carried on with our trip and met the most wonderful and kind people along the way. Civility does still exist – especially in Scotland. Wishing you a full and speedy recovery.
    Susan
  52. Jane Mccarthy says:
    I am so excited about all your new drawings and give-aways! I love your cups so much–they are a big part of every day for me. I use a fresh cup no matter how many cups of cofee/tee I drink—-because I can!! And the Red Letter Day gets the most use, because I’m always wishing for a red-letter day!! Bless you Susan, for all the soothing and comforting thoughts you send our way!!
  53. susan Piddington says:
    Dear Sue
    I’m so glad to hear that you are getting stronger every day. I also envy all the weight you have lost, I struggle to lose one pound much less 30 or so. I love all the new things you are offering, and hope I win one of them. Have a great fall. Love Sue
  54. Diana says:
    Wishing you a speedy recovery! Beautiful cups, love them all.
She encouraged me to leave you a note but I shied away. I did tell her to tell you that the girl from Durham Ct. loves you. Thx for all the peace and joy you bring me.—-Carol
  65. Beth E. says:
    As much as I adore your mugs and would love to have one (or a set!), I absolutely love the bookmarks, too! I print every one you make available. I’m also a little crazy about the nightlights! 🙂
  66. Jane says:
    Oh, my dear Susan – Big fat BUMMER on the wrist thing! But, here you are, happy and cheery as ever, making us feel loved and important. Be kind and gentle to yourself and follow doctor’s orders so you can get back to work on that special book! My big news is that I am off to England with a dear friend the end of September for twelve blissful days — staying in a flat in Kensington and venturing out to Blenheim Castle, High Grove, AND the potteries! (You and I have the same Spode Pink Tower!). My darling husband of 46 years said, “You go!” And so I am. We haven’t been apart for more than a week since 1986. We;re shop, shop, shopping, tea at Forthum and Mason, AND the Downton Abbey movie in London, and on and on. As I write, I’m making brown sugar shortbread in the shape of acorns AND I’m going to print out a bookmark for each of us. THANK YOU!!! I will pray for complete healing on that wrist. Be well, dear heart!
  67. Kathy H says:
    Wonderful to have a blog post from you but so sad to learn that the reason for the long silence is your broken wrist. I hope your healing continues smoothly and you’ll soon be able to do all your favorite things. Maybe you’ve had more time to read this summer? Thank you for sharing your life with us.
  68. Jenny says:
    Raising her hand 🖐 and asking to be cheered up!!!!!
    Best to you and yours and good luck to all of us!
    Jenny
