A SURPRISE

I promised you “a surprise” in my last post (about a hundred years ago, oh my goodness, I’m so late)! MUSICA (nice old Frank)🎶 I don’t usually start things off with a photo of me, but I had to make an exception to add oomph to my explanation for why I’ve been away so long! In the photo, I’m dressed and on my way to give a talk at Island Writes, but you may notice something not quite right.

Yeah, why is she wearing that black glove? What an odd-looking glove. Hey, that’s not a glove! No. It. Is. Not. It is a (stupid) cast for a broken wrist. A broken right wrist. The hand that does everything. So anyway, I broke it a little over a month ago while packing up things for the yard sale. Tripped over bags, hand-to-floor, caught myself, the end. Which also ended the infamous yard sale for this year. Ended almost everything, because I had no idea what all this hand did until I lost it. Besides typing, writing, and painting, it opens cat food cans, washes hair, signs books, holds a freaking fork, puts on earrings, uses scissors, deadheads roses, DRIVES, and chops onions. Hello. At first I couldn’t do any of it, I gave my brain a new kind of workout by practicing writing with my left hand, but one-by-one I’ve been getting things back. And Look Ma, I’m typing! I think I MIGHT get the brace off Sept. 14, my Doctor keeps little secrets to himself, I’ve learned, but I am hoping! It wasn’t a bad break, no surgery; I glowed like a 7 year old when he called me a “good patient.” It’s the little things in life. Yes, physical therapy will follow, but I’ve been doing exercises to keep my arms strong, so I hope normalcy returns soon. Thank goodness for Joe! He’s been taking such good care of me!

But I promised you surprises, and you’re going to get surprises! 🌸 Our Courage Charm has arrived . . . isn’t it wonderful? Gold with a streak of pink that goes all the way around. Pink, the color of nurturing, for yourself, and for others. The color of love.💝

It comes on its own little card . . . the charm is engraved with the words “Courage, Dear Heart . . .”💞

Thought you’d like to see my bracelet . . . I think I have them all so far!

And this? This is not for sale! This surprise of all four-seasons of my cups (which are all sold-out and no longer available anywhere on earth), is for the lucky person whose name gets drawn by Vanna in the next post! I told you I would have surprises! Just leave a comment, and you’ll be entered! It can be for you, or maybe you’ll want to take it apart and make four Christmas 🎄 presents out of it! Leave a comment!’Tis almost the season! Here comes

And this? This is for everyone! A brand new bookmark for all my Anglophile, Corgie-adoring, Queen-admiring girlfriends and the people they love! Just click HERE, print it on card-stock, have it laminated if you like . . . it makes a very sweet stocking stuffer or book-gift accountrement.(In case you’re new here, the bookmark is tucked into a copy of my book A Fine Romance, Falling in Love with the English Countryside.)

And what else? Oh yes, for everyone that preordered and waited so patiently, I’m thrilled to tell you the new cups are scheduled to arrive in California TOMORROW, on Thursday! And yes, I ordered extra so we would have some to last through Christmas, just in cases. The heart cup is another Courage item. The world is so wild these days, we need as much of this as we can get. And there’s another secret about this cup . . .💞

I didn’t design it! I designed a red cup with hearts on it which Joe thought was a little boring, and said, “Why don’t you make it look like champagne?” I said, naturally, “What are you talking about?” He tried to tell me, but I couldn’t picture it, was running out to lunch with girlfriends, and said, willy-nilly, over my shoulder, “Draw me a picture!” Because I know Joe is an artist even though he never does it. But I didn’t expect THIS. Champagne bubbles made into hearts. Of course I fell in love with it. My boy is a genius!

Very appropriately, this is Joe’s first cup ~ Champagne Hearts! He will very likely never do another one, not sure I can figure out how I tricked him into this one!🙃

I designed the bottom and the handle, so it was a group effort. From the Heart of our Home.💖 You’ll have them by the end of next week!👏

This one too! The Martha’s Vineyard cup, arriving at the Studio tomorrow, and in case you’re coming to the Island, it’s already available in the shop that carries my things here ~ which, by the way, has changed their name to Vineyard Arts Gallery, it’s still in the same place in downtown Vineyard Haven, and Robin still runs it. And one more by-the-way . . . another reason for you to leave a comment ➡️ Yes! I’ll be sending some lucky person their very own Martha’s Vineyard cup too! It’s an Autumn extravaganza!

This too! Leave a comment to win this Pumpkinhead cup! So far that makes three lucky winners and you only need to leave one comment to be entered for everything! Why you may ask? Because I can! (Writing now, from day after I published this post: Reading the lovely comments ~ can’t answer so many with bad hand, but reading 🤗, loving, sometimes tears, THANK YOU.💞 This is why. We are the world!) I detect a need for cheer and doing my best in this little world of ours, to make some of it for my Girlfriends! And, to make it more fun, the winner of this Pumpkinhead cup will also get a box of my Inspiration Notecards.

Hope you love them!

Jack also wanted me to let you know, in his own unique way (by draping himself on the thing I’m trying to photograph), that the 2020 calendars have arrived! If you preordered, you should have them!

Other good news, our teapot plates are back in stock! We’ve gotten lots of requests ~ sooo happy they’re finally here!

Great for holiday cookies, as a little serving dish and. . .

also looks great hanging on a wall!

And brand NEW, two night lights!

Blue dots on a scalloped porcelain shade!

And little flowers too!

You can read about them HERE.

I have soooo much more to tell you, but this is my first day back at typing and I’ve just been made a wee bit painfully aware, it’s time to stop! I’m only half done! Wah! Guess I will join Jack doing what we do best!

Still eating yummy whole food!

Have devolved to one-finger typing, left-hand ~ but one last thing, I’m reading this helpful book I think you might like.

Interesting book that reminds us of our lovely humanity . . .

We need to remember in our crazy world . . . also, from me to you💞, want to remind:

I printed last year’s bookmark for my BookClub girlfriends. They will love getting a new one. I had a broken wrist adventure myself. I’m a lefty so I joined most of the world and learned to write my name with my right hand.

  9. Judy in A.G. says:

Poor Susan! You have all my sympathy! I broke my right wrist in February of last year. My sweet husband really rose to the occasion. He took over all the cooking, helped me dress (darn zippers and buttons!), even did my hair each morning for 6 weeks. He was far more patient than I was! That was an experience I never want to repeat! Hope your cast comes off soon and you speed through physical therapy. We’re all thinking good thoughts for you!

  10. Christel says:

What a nice surprise! I know how painful it is to have your arm in a cast….got mine broken by a patient 2 years ago, I spent the whole summer in a cast! Not fun! But I’ve learn something and it is well resumed by George Bernard Shaw: “Enjoy convalescence. It is the part that makes illness worthwhile.” I love it!
Take good care of yourself, and don’t worry about us the girlfriends, we’ll be ok lol
    Christel from France <3

  11. Coco says:

Oh Miss Susan! So sorry to hear about your wrist. But honestly, who else could look so cute whilst wearing a black cast? (No one.) Is that the famous Laura Ashley petticoat peeking out under your skirt? Adorable. Let’s hope you were already ambidextrous at kitty-petting… I’m with Jack, praying your paw will be all better soon. xoxox Coco

So sorry to hear about your tumble and wrist break. I’m sure it will heal nicely and you’ll be back to your old self very soon. Thanks for the three chances to win one of your beautiful mugs…..sweet! I love Jack, so cute! A month ago I rescued one of four kittens that were under my sister’s front steps. My niece took two and one went to a shelter to be adopted by another lucky person. My husband has happily re-arranged his barn/workshop for this little guy or girl (we still don’t know). Lil’Kitty, though much improved, is still very skittish and we are waiting for him to come around to us….hope he does soon! Thanks for your inspiration! Love your blogs.

  28. Rachel from PA says:

I’m sorry about your wrist! I had to have surgery on my right wrist (also right handed) because of my RA and it was such a pain. You don’t realize how much you use it until you can’t! Praying for a quick and full recovery. I saw a few people mention this, but definitely do your PT. It will make a huge difference.

  29. Paula B. says:

Speedy recovery, Susan. I hope the doctor has good news when you see him again. I love all the mugs, but, oh, my heart does love the one designed by Joe. What an uplifting post I feel so cheered as I begin the morning on this last weekday of the month. I fear summer is leaving us as everyone will be back in school after the holiday weekend. I am going to miss the warmth of the summer and being able to go and swim outdoors in the pool every day. Counting my blessings though and enjoying the “sounds of silence”.

  30. LuAnne says:

Be gentle with yourself, the world needs you💕

  31. Judy from Maine says:

Oh, a broken wrist, a hardship for sure, but as with everything you seem to be dealing with it with a smile in your heart, that you share with us all. Thank you for being you.

Thanks for sharing all that you do. The book you are currently Notes in a Nervous Planet will have to get on my shelf. Both my children suffer from anxiety and on occasion depression which sometimes makes me suffer because as a mom, I feel everything they do. I purchased one of your mugs “Have I Told You lately that I love you” for my husband and he adores it.
Hope you heal quickly and are able to do all that you need and love to do! God bless!

  41. Rosemary T says:

My neighbor and best friend brought the sweet bookmark over to me yesterday that she had printed from your blog post. I had not checked in awhile and so….was happy to see some words from you but so sorry about that wrist. Must not do those things like falling. Please recover completely and soon.

  42. Meg says:

Sending healing thoughts for your wrist. If it’s not too uncomfortable, encourage Jack to lie near it and purr; cats heal themselves with the vibrations of purring, and no doubt it will help you, too! (Or, at the very least, it will make you feel happy and forget about your wrist for a bit.) The island should be quieting down after this weekend; enjoy!

  43. Doreen Strain says:

HI Susan…it’s been a long time since I’ve visited. Not sure you’d remember me but since my husband passes four years ago, I’ve been trying to find my new normal. I’ve been saying over and over again…something is missing…and this morning I woke up thinking of you…So here I am bringing normal back into my life with your blog. We’ve had many written exchanges in the past. Life has a way of mixing thing up…(as I can see from your beautiful cast.) Happy to be “back here” and experiencing some of my “normal” back again. Have a great weekend! I’m awaiting “Dorian” here in Florida!

You have fought your way through terrible grief to find the light again. I have so much admiration for your courage. Life turns us on roads we’d rather not go, then it’s up to us. “The most beautiful people I know are those who’ve known defeat, known suffering, known loss and have found their way out of the depths.” Elizabeth Kubler Ros xoxo

  44. Gwyn Whelband says:

Ouch! Sorry about your break, please remember to do your exercises, hugs Gwyn.

  45. Broken bones are no fun. Is this Natures way of slowing us down? I always think there is a reason for unpleasant things to happen. A change in course, having a spot of time to thinks about things we would not take time for. I don’t know the answer, but I try to think of the bright side of things and if I can, adjust! Really hope your recovery is pain free and you have the time to enjoy the coming autumn season. I am glad you have Joe and Jack to help you and keep up your spirits as you recover from your fall.

  53. Linda Allen says:

    Hi Susan,
I called my special guy (45 years) in so I could read him the part about you breaking your wrist & he said “Are you crying?” and I said “No” but then realized I did indeed have tears welling in my eyes & a big old lump in my throat. He was amused & was trying to take a picture. Anyway, I was thinking that you are exactly right! We don’t know how precious even the simple things are until we no longer have them. That right arm also rubs kitties & flings ponytail holders. Stirs soups on your cute stove & runs it’s fingers through Joe’s hair. Not that you can’t do all those with the left hand, but it’s not the same. Your sweet, funny, informative, imaginative, caring, lovleee posts always fill my heart with emotion. I know we’ve never met, but I think of you as one of my best girlfriends! Thank you for filling my life with JOY! The books, the cookbooks, the calendars, the vases, the tea, the mugs & all the other “Susan” stuff that make me smile. I do hope to meet you one day! Martha’s Vineyard has been on my Bucket List for years! Praying for your speedy & complete recovery. Be careful, Girlfriend. We’re not “spring chickens” anymore!
    Love from Richmond, VA

    Hi Susan,
I broke my right arm late April. I finished p.t. this week and will have full mobility by April, 2020! But it is so much better. It was not for the faint of heart. I live alone with my rambunctious Black Lab, “Olive” in a 200 yr. Old farmhouse on 5 acres in Vt.,
It’s true, what doesn’t kill you, makes you stronger. The lesson I think I learned is to slow down! Good healing.

  69. Cari says:

In case someone hasn’t added it yet and is wondering:

“I believe I know the only cure, which is to make one’s center of life inside of one’s self, not selfishly or excludingly, but with a kind of unassailable serenity—to decorate one’s inner house so richly that one is content there, glad to welcome anyone who wants to come and stay, but happy all the same when one is inevitably alone.”

    ― Edith Wharton

  76. Mary Jane Hardy says:

I am so sorry to hear you broke your wrist, Having your hand out of commission is no fun. Just got over that myself. Ok, I have to tell you why. I have a stray cat that has been around here for about 3 years. We live way back off the road and he has decided this is his main base. I feed him when he comes around. It was a blistering hot day in early July and I decided to feed him and give him water. Well I took it out to him and sat down in the grass for a minute. He came over and was rubbing up against me I was petting him, all was good, until I ran my hands down his side. All of a sudden he whirled around and bit me on my left hand, he must of been hurt . Blood running all over the place. Long story short, I ended up in the hospital for 3 days, series of rabies shots (for weeks) had cellulitis, took most of the summer to get totally better. Everyone wanted to shoot the cat. I said NO. I knew he didn’t have rabies. He had been hurt. But just got my hand use back. (oh, forgot to add that my husband had just had knee replacement surgery!) Just got finished feeding kitty again. So I do feel your pain not having the use of your hand!! What a summer lol !! You will be well soon and back to normal before you know it. Sure makes you appreciate both hands though doesn’t it!! Here”s to a wonderful Fall for everyone!!

    Love, Mary Jane

  77. Debbie says:

So sorry to hear about your broken wrist, and hope it is mended soon! Love the bookmark and printed one out for a friend who lives in Scotland, and decided to deliver it personally with a book I found for her called ‘Around Britain by Cake’ by Caroline Taggart. I bought this book for Martyn a few years ago as he just loves cake (all kinds!) and he loves it so I thought my friend might like it too. I know she will love the bookmark which I have just slipped inside the cover for her to find! She has heard about you because we went to visit her after the Picnic at Castle Cottage last year. I have put the book in a little book bag I made for her!

From now on whenever I drink champagne (sparkling wine), which is quite frequently, I shall think of hearts rising up to burst open with joy and love! True inspiration!

    Love you girl!

Absolutely love the cups. I love living in an area of the country where we experience all the seasons. Not always happy with the weather, but a nice mug of tea helps.

Oh, Susan! I feel your pain! May 18th I did a stupid human trick. I tripped over the ball hitch of our truck while waiting to view the big train engine in Laramie. Spiral break on my upper humerus bone! After months of my amazing husband taking care of me, I’m finally out of the clam brace and working hard in physical therapy! Wednesday was my first day fishing. (Now I can say I got on the boat once before the end of summer!) Caught a 7 pound Northern Pike! Of course I let him go, but what a way to celebrate my arm healing!

So sorry about your wrist! It’s amazing how much we need hands, shoulders, knees, etc. when we can’t use them for whatever reason! All the parts are supposed to work together! But I agree with Christel’s George Bernard Shaw quote: “Enjoy convalescence. It is the part that makes illness worthwhile.” We should all remember that. I love reading your posts, blogs, and Willards (yes from back in the day). Thank you for everything.

Just started reading your “a fine romance” travel journal and loving every page.! Hoping for those precious cups!!!

Posted a comment yesterday afternoon that went “poof” right before my very eyes ! Second draft is always better than the first! ( I am not as concerned about being entered in your raffle of lovely multiple giveaways–though I am quite enamored of your Jack O”Lantern mug–as I am in sending you prayers for continued healing!) SO glad you are near the finish line in recovering from your fall. You’ll be drawing and water coloring again in no time!! Trust me, everything will be all right!! All Girlfriends are rooting for you. BIG hug! BIG LOVE!!

  98. Jean Russo says:

So sorry to hear you broke your wrist but it will heal. Maybe it was trying to tell you to slow down because I bet you are very busy!

  99. Maya says:

Your mugs are so beautiful. I hope you get better soon and keep writing and creating. And thank you for enduring the discomfort and pain while writing this post. 💕

    Dearest Susan,
Am late to the party…oh my goodness your poor wristicles!! 😖. Do hope you’re not overdoing things with it. At least if it is a hard cast, you probably can’t strain it too much. Poor you. Poor Joe! At least Jack can have kitty cuddles with your left hand!!

Loved everything in the blog apart from your poor wrist. The new mugs and trays and bits and bobs. The colourful pictures. The beautiful Jack!

    Keep recovering and resting!
