A SURPRISE

I promised you “a surprise” in my last post (about a hundred years ago, oh my goodness, I’m so late)! MUSICA (nice old Frank)🎶 I don’t usually start things off with a photo of me, but I had to make an exception to add oomph to my explanation for why I’ve been away so long! In the photo, I’m dressed and on my way to give a talk at Island Writes, but you may notice something not quite right.

Yeah, why is she wearing that black glove? What an odd-looking glove. Hey, that’s not a glove! No. It. Is. Not. It is a (stupid) cast for a broken wrist. A broken right wrist. The hand that does everything. So anyway, I broke it a little over a month ago while packing up things for the yard sale. Tripped over bags, hand-to-floor, caught myself, the end. Which also ended the infamous yard sale for this year. Ended almost everything, because I had no idea what all this hand did until I lost it. Besides typing, writing, and painting, it opens cat food cans, washes hair, signs books, holds a freaking fork, puts on earrings, uses scissors, deadheads roses, DRIVES, and chops onions. Hello. At first I couldn’t do any of it, I gave my brain a new kind of workout by practicing writing with my left hand, but one-by-one I’ve been getting things back. And Look Ma, I’m typing! I think I MIGHT get the brace off Sept. 14, my Doctor keeps little secrets to himself, I’ve learned, but I am hoping! It wasn’t a bad break, no surgery; I glowed like a 7 year old when he called me a “good patient.” It’s the little things in life. Yes, physical therapy will follow, but I’ve been doing exercises to keep my arms strong, so I hope normalcy returns soon. Thank goodness for Joe! He’s been taking such good care of me!

But I promised you surprises, and you’re going to get surprises! 🌸 Our Courage Charm has arrived . . . isn’t it wonderful? Gold with a streak of pink that goes all the way around. Pink, the color of nurturing, for yourself, and for others. The color of love.💝

It comes on its own little card . . . the charm is engraved with the words “Courage, Dear Heart . . .”💞

Thought you’d like to see my bracelet . . . I think I have them all so far!

And this? This is not for sale! This surprise of all four-seasons of my cups (which are all sold-out and no longer available anywhere on earth), is for the lucky person whose name gets drawn by Vanna in the next post! I told you I would have surprises! Just leave a comment, and you’ll be entered! It can be for you, or maybe you’ll want to take it apart and make four Christmas 🎄 presents out of it! Leave a comment!’Tis almost the season! Here comes

And this? This is for everyone! A brand new bookmark for all my Anglophile, Corgie-adoring, Queen-admiring girlfriends and the people they love! Just click HERE, print it on card-stock, have it laminated if you like . . . it makes a very sweet stocking stuffer or book-gift accountrement.(In case you’re new here, the bookmark is tucked into a copy of my book A Fine Romance, Falling in Love with the English Countryside.)

And what else? Oh yes, for everyone that preordered and waited so patiently, I’m thrilled to tell you the new cups are scheduled to arrive in California TOMORROW, on Thursday! And yes, I ordered extra so we would have some to last through Christmas, just in cases. The heart cup is another Courage item. The world is so wild these days, we need as much of this as we can get. And there’s another secret about this cup . . .💞

I didn’t design it! I designed a red cup with hearts on it which Joe thought was a little boring, and said, “Why don’t you make it look like champagne?” I said, naturally, “What are you talking about?” He tried to tell me, but I couldn’t picture it, was running out to lunch with girlfriends, and said, willy-nilly, over my shoulder, “Draw me a picture!” Because I know Joe is an artist even though he never does it. But I didn’t expect THIS. Champagne bubbles made into hearts. Of course I fell in love with it. My boy is a genius!

Very appropriately, this is Joe’s first cup ~ Champagne Hearts! He will very likely never do another one, not sure I can figure out how I tricked him into this one!🙃

I designed the bottom and the handle, so it was a group effort. From the Heart of our Home.💖 You’ll have them by the end of next week!👏

This one too! The Martha’s Vineyard cup, arriving at the Studio tomorrow, and in case you’re coming to the Island, it’s already available in the shop that carries my things here ~ which, by the way, has changed their name to Vineyard Arts Gallery, it’s still in the same place in downtown Vineyard Haven, and Robin still runs it. And one more by-the-way . . . another reason for you to leave a comment ➡️ Yes! I’ll be sending some lucky person their very own Martha’s Vineyard cup too! It’s an Autumn extravaganza!

This too! Leave a comment to win this Pumpkinhead cup! So far that makes three lucky winners and you only need to leave one comment to be entered for everything! Why you may ask? Because I can! (Writing now, from day after I published this post: Reading the lovely comments ~ can’t answer so many with bad hand, but reading 🤗, loving, sometimes tears, THANK YOU.💞 This is why. We are the world!) I detect a need for cheer and doing my best in this little world of ours, to make some of it for my Girlfriends! And, to make it more fun, the winner of this Pumpkinhead cup will also get a box of my Inspiration Notecards.

Hope you love them!

Jack also wanted me to let you know, in his own unique way (by draping himself on the thing I’m trying to photograph), that the 2020 calendars have arrived! If you preordered, you should have them!

Other good news, our teapot plates are back in stock! We’ve gotten lots of requests ~ sooo happy they’re finally here!

Great for holiday cookies, as a little serving dish and. . .

also looks great hanging on a wall!

And brand NEW, two night lights!

Blue dots on a scalloped porcelain shade!

And little flowers too!

You can read about them HERE.

I have soooo much more to tell you, but this is my first day back at typing and I’ve just been made a wee bit painfully aware, it’s time to stop! I’m only half done! Wah! Guess I will join Jack doing what we do best!

Still eating yummy whole food!

Have devolved to one-finger typing, left-hand ~ but one last thing, I’m reading this helpful book I think you might like.

Interesting book that reminds us of our lovely humanity . . .

We need to remember in our crazy world . . . also, from me to you💞, want to remind:

    • Gail G., Port Jefferson, NY says:

I am so sorry to hear about your broken wrist. I too know how it is. I broke my arm a few years back and it is definitely an eye-opener to see how much you use it! But don’t despair! Physical therapy and time will do the trick. You will be back to your old self soon.
By the way–that last photo of Jack is so adorable. Cats can make you feel cozy and so content.

Happy Labor Day to you , Joe, and Jack. Positive thoughts coming your way for a speedy recovery.

  2. Elizabeth Morgan says:

    Dear Susan,
So sorry to hear about your wrist!! I had right shoulder surgery a year ago and am also right handed, and was shocked at how restricted and lost I was without the use of my right hand. I couldn’t move my arm or hand much until I was cleared to start the rather long process of physical therapy. PT and home exercises prescribed by the therapists, restored my right arm/hand function to normal so thank God for PT!!! It truly is amazing so dont be discouraged if initially, after the cast is removed, you experience weakness because PT will help you correct all that!!! It is amazing. My husband was my life saver much as your Joe is for you. (Isnt it wonderful to be blessed with such a wonderful husband? A gift to be thankful for everyday in my book…). Anyway, continued love and peace as you recover. I have been a fan of your beautiful work and this WONDERFUL blog for a long time and want you to know how much I appreciate you sharing your life with all of us. You are a bright light in a time in our world when we need more kindness, compassion, and joy so I send you all of that in this post. Peace!

  3. Kristi K Grant says:

Best wishes for a speedy recovery!!! Always look forward to reading your adventures.

  4. Glenda says:

So sorry about your fall, but happy for your recovery! Makes this a double blessing that you would write to us with your cast. Hugs! Glenda

  5. Camille says:

One of the best things about an injury is that we then appreciate something simple that we took for granted. Bless you, I know this time has been difficult, but you look lovely.

I would like to know what brand of shoes you were wearing in the picture. They look so comfortable!

  6. Amy Dray says:

  14. Sandra Thompson says:

  15. Joan Hagy says:

Oh Susan! Must design more and more lovely cups?! My husbang (mistyped that some time ago and now he is always husbang) had said that is enough! Whah!!!! But, silly boy, I have figured away around his line in the sand. I am taking several to my classroom and will have room in the cupboard for a few more!

  16. Julee Reeves says:

Glad you are healing nicely. Looking forward to Fall and seeing your cute ghosty back in the window! Have already got your “Autumn” book placed ever so slightly behind your “Summer” book on the cookbook stand, ready to pop out soon. I’d love the set of mugs. My Mom is 89 years old and I’d love giving her a new mug every season over this next year. We lost Daddy nearly 2 years back and I try to find fun things for her. These would be perfect surprises. Thanks for your wonderful recipes and decor ideas and calendars and so many sweet things. I just printed the bookmark – being an Anglophile, I fell in love immediately and love having it. Thank you!

  17. Mary Eva says:

Hi Susan. Just in case my last post got lost in the sauce and with so many writing to you I can imagine how easy that would be. Thinking about you, just LOVE that picture of you (so cute) and I’m so sorry about your wrist. Nothing can slow you down for long though can it 🥰.

  18. Anne says:

Thank you for all you do that cheers me up and brings me out of the blues that I am more frequently falling into. I’ve walked away from so many little things that brought me joy, shame on me! I’m working my way back to joy and your blog and preciousness is at the top of the list for me as a joy filler. Looking forward to your next communication and a new joy update! ❤️❤️🐝😘🐝

  20. Sherill Anderson says:

    Dear Susan, HEAL HEAL!
I see you will have new neighbors on Martha’s Vineyard.
From the Pacific Northwest where this year we have no forest fire smoke.

  21. Kindred Kate says:

Hi Susan, I hope your wrist is healing! I could hardly wait for your blog to arrive since I had a surprise to tell you. I just got back from spending 2 weeks in England! My niece’s business was sending her there & she wanted a companion- lucky me!
I had to wait on my own for her for 4 days in London but I mastered the Tube, HOHO busses, taxis, UBER, & walked for miles. It rained every other day so of course I had to buy an umbrella.
What impressed me the most was the beautifully restored architecture & the friendly people. I went to pubs & museums( saw Beatrix Potter’s childhood journal, thanks to your mentioning it in A Fine Romance) then had tea @ Fortnum & Mason’s.
When my niece, Beth arrived she became the “master chauffeur” driving on the left on our journey west. Just like you had warned, those hedgerows seemed to be inches from my window- our car kept beeping,” too close! Too close!” But she plowed ahead with no fear(like Joe-aren’t we fortunate to have “drivers?!”)
Did you & Joe ever make it to Doc Martin’s Port Isaac? We stayed in Louisa’s schoolhouse- delightful! We joined in their fundraising celebration for the National Royal Lifeboat Institution( NRLI) by participating in their “welly throwing” contest, eating cream teas, & to- die- for Cornwall ice cream. As I was eating mine, a giant seagull landed on my shoulder & grabbed the entire scoop of ice cream in his beak, which got quite a hilarious reaction from all who witnessed it! We added Land’s End, the Minark Theater, Mousehole, Highclere Castle, Bath & Bibury to our travels. I am so glad I had read A Fine Romance. I would never have known to go to Bibury. It was so charming. ( I just ordered William Morris wrapping paper to cover my journal!) We looked up Siobhan’s Bibury Court but it is “ permanently closed!” Have they moved on? So we stayed at Bovey Castle in the Dartmoor National Park instead- beyond elegant.
I am back in Oregon now, waking every morning with hundreds of English images flashing through my mind. I am carrying your book with me every time I get together with someone when they ask me about my trip. You have captured the essence of England perfectly- brilliant!

    • sbranch says:

Heaven! Yes on Port Issac! Wonderful! Siobhan sold Bibury Court some years ago ~ not sure what’s been happening! Your trip sounds fantastic! Welcome home!

Sorry about your hand/wrist. Maybe it was Gods’s way Of telling you to slow down? Anyway, I love your story about how Joe made your cup spectacular. I would call it “A cup of Joe.” Even though I’m a tea drinker, it still sounds awesome. Oh, I did receive my preordered 2020 calendar. I can’t wait to hang it. Toodles.

  46. Carol Maurer says:

Oh, I feel for you, as I broke my right wrist several years ago. Couldn’t so anything either. Found out my husband was a fine cook, housekeeper, gardener and just plain wonderful support of me. I couldn’t have done it without him!!

Have you heard the “Downton Abbey “movie will be coming out in September? Looking forward to seeing it!!

Take care, Susan! Things will be back to normal before you know it.

  47. Irma J Roberts says:

Sorry to hear about your broken wrist! I understand about learning how much one uses (or used!) a broken part! I do love your blog and am cheered when I see one in my email! I love all of your items! Wish I could figure out a way to HAVE all of them! Yes, our world is not so kind and we need something to remind us that it really is a wonderful place. One of those somethings is YOU! Thank you for your happy news!

  48. Barbara Anne says:

So sorry for the fractured wrist! OUCH! There is little so nauseating as a broken bone. Am glad you’re on the mend.

I completely understand about a right hand that does everything. When our older son was a sad kindergardener, frustrated about learning to write, I put my pencil in my left hand and … my handwriting looked like his! I told him it was all about practice. He felt much better, not that his handwriting became perfect overnight. It took practice. 🙂

Thanks for the chance to win the mugs. I just missed getting one of the Winter ones a while back and wished I’d been speedier.

    Be good to you!

  49. MARY K BLACK says:

I am glad to know that you’re healing, falling down is no joke! My niece just loves your artful products, I would so love to gift her in some way. She is mourning the loss of her mom (my big sister) at the young-ish age of 70. Loss is hard. But we find ways to carry on. Thank you for making our world a more beautiful place.

  50. Gwen Ferguson says:

I totally understand your issues with your broken wrist. Two years ago, I tripped in the middle of the night and broke my right arm. You are SO right that you don’t realize all you do with your right hand ( I am right handed). I am just now beginning to do things right handed again. You are lucky to have Joe to help, I live alone( am 70 years old) and it definitely has been an adventure. You will be back to normal in no time, I;m sure. Just take it easy and be careful.

  51. Karen Riley says:

Let’s all make 2020 the official Year of Kindness in ALL areas (including the political) in our sphere of influence!

  52. Lee Hilliker says:

    Happy to know you’re mending!

  53. Nan Rohan says:

Susan, I am so sorry about your broken wrist! Hope the bone heals quickly. You are an inspiration to so many of us. My daughter loves you too! We are eagerly awaiting the publication of Enchanted. No pressure! NaN and Sarah

Your buoyancy and lyrical spirit continue to shine through, in spite of what has befallen you. May you continue to march forward courageously.

    Diana from Southern California

  55. Pam Boivie says:

Dear Susan, You are such a dear…I have followed you for more years than I was married or had children at home…who are now 37 and 33. You share your beautiful thoughts and art with us, and remind us that there is so much more to life than work, and email, and keeping up with our lists. I get choked up every time I read your blog, sometimes putting it off until I can find “just the right moment.” And then I am sorry I waited, because I need to have read it much sooner! I have had a wonderful pen pal friend for several years now, because of you…even our mail boxes have names and share notes…Gail and Maggie! (We got a little crazy with that!) Thank you for all the good times, times of sweet tears and beautiful memories. You are the one who encourages us! (OK, where is my tissue?)

  56. Sharon Stroud says:

      Sharon,
Hope you can completely heal from the stroke. My mother had one when I was small, and she completely healed. A dear friend up here in Maine, did as well. He stuck with the PT, practiced his speech diligently, and conquered it. Very best to you,
      Debbie in Maine

  57. Diane Louise says:

As one of your loyal readers, I too am sorry to hear of your injury. Thank you for spreading cheer as usual, despite your painful wrist. Blessings on your full healing!

All my psychic energy is aimed at Hurricane Dorian. Turn, Turn, Turn. Too late for the tiny Bahama islands I sailed to with a much loved uncle…on his boat.
But there is a whoosh of good news from all the models. Will still be a mess, but probabilities are not saying a direct hit. My “old” husband lives on his boat in Stewart, which was and may still be in the bull’s eye. The “new” husband and I live in Winter in Tampa. So…..we may have dodged this bullet….this time.
    Debbie in Maine

  71. Tedi says:

    Heal well dear Susan!

  72. Sharon D. says:

Dear Susan, I am so sorry to hear about your wrist! Prayers for healing and strength. You never truly appreciate things until you no longer can utilize them. I had shoulder surgery last Autumn and it is amazing how an injury can limit you so much. Here’s to a speedy and healthy recovery <3 I always get excited when I see a new post from you, thank you for brightening my day 🙂 I love, love, love your artwork!

  73. Love your post. It brightens up my day.greetings from the Netherlands

  74. Cathleen Livingston says:

    Hello Susan!
Seeing you with your broken wrist reminds me of the time I broke mine.
I was teaching Art to 5th graders at the time and standing in front of a group of them with my back to the hallway. As the dismissal bell rang I stepped backwards into the hall, caught my foot on one of those huge paper roll holders fell back into some lockers and right onto my own wrist. Although it hurt a little I continued to work for 3 more days until it hurt enough to realize it “must” be broken. Like you, just a cast, no surgery but I don’t think I’ve taken a step backwards ever since and I always hold the railing going down steps.
Also wanted to say I will be coming to Martha’s Vineyard in mid September and am happy to hear there is a store carrying your beautiful items in Vineyard Haven. I will be staying in Edgartown and wondered if there was any place there also carrying your line?
Wishing you a speedy and complete recovery!

  75. Sandy says:

I love the beads, the cups, you!! Thank you for sharing your world!

  76. Lucia Ann France-Bryant says:

So sorry about your wrist. Left hand gets a workout. Can’t wait for Downton Abbey, also, I wonder when is “Midwife” is coming back on? I’m going to recommend the book for my bookclub on Friday. Hope you feel better soon.

  77. Sarah Maldonado says:

Well, all things happen at the right time…when you first listed the new mugs for pre-order, I ordered two of the champagne heart mugs. My hubby was undergoing grueling chemo treatments and not knowing when we would be done, i wrote in comments that i hoped to use the mugs when they were ready to toast his return to health. The mugs are ready, my notice they are in the mail came, AND my husband completed chemo and radiation this week and scans show he is in remission! Happiness abounds. There are words in the song Oklahoma Sky, (I am from Oklahoma), and the lyrics say, “love’s always on time”….everything comes at the right time! ❤️

  78. Lynda Brooks says:

Dear Susan, Oh so sorry to hear of your broken wrist! What a dreadful thing. It seems like this summer has been full of dreadful things for us too… so much bad news. We are hoping for a change in luck with the autumn, but then hurricane warnings are heading to NC where we are. Praying for positive change. Thanks for your blog post – always a day brightener!
    Love from Coastal Carolina

  79. Esther Heller says:

    SB,

Wow! Look at all these comments! I love the heart cup, and the note cards look charming. I hope you are feeling better soon and back to doing all the things you love with a functioning right hand.

  81. Dawn Tuthill says:

Glad to hear your hand is starting to get better. I had knee replacement surgery almost 3 years ago. The recovery time was 3 months. The first month was difficult. The first week I pretty much stayed upstairs and my husband took care of me. Then I stated to go downstairs and stay down most of the day (to avoid going up and down the steps). Then I had a walker upstairs and one downstairs so when my husband was at work I could go by myself. No way I could carry the walker too. When I could finally drive myself to physical therapy(take pain pills after I got home) I started feeling normal again. It will never bend as far as it used to, and my balance isn’t perfect carrying heavy loads down the stairs, like laundry which I go backwards holding the rail then bring laundry a couple steps down to me and repeat to bottom, or carrying my grandson which I hold the railing with one hand and go step by step. As long as I’m not carrying anything much I am fine and it is mostly good.
I hope you continue to heal well and can get back to your writing and painting, after all what would the world be without our Susan Branch pretties! How sweet that Joe came up with the cute champagne design for the cups. I’m still hoping that one of these days you will make more of the fairy tale beads. It would be perfect for Christmas (even next year). You gave me such a laugh with that book your reading and the guy getting hit by the driverless car. I always look forward to and enjoy reading your blogs. Thanks for this new one and definitely be careful not to overdue. Hopefully physical therapy will go well and you will be felling better. I’m definitely looking forward to your next book and hearing more about your latest trip. Maybe now is a good time to go back and reread fairy tale girl to refresh my memory.

    Dear Susan,
This is a thank you for all you’ve given me. I saw your Christmas book years ago when
It came out and bought it as fast as I could. I do not ignore cottages in the pine trees with
Snow all around. I was a goner. You gave me the courage to go to The English countryside,
A picture on your blog of a lovely couple in plaid sent me to Scotland. I actually walked in
Beatrix potter’s house and garden, chased sheep everywhere I went, had more tea parties and
Decorated the table with star bobech, soothed my soul in Gladys Tabor and even went to her
House and you were there. I didn’t stop to talk because I had met you in Evanston and wanted to give other people a chance to meet you. I loved the same movies, music and took
An art class in college and drew a Barbra album cover (no competition here). I also am still 12 inMy heart even though I am 73. I have all your books and am looking forward to your new One but it turns out I have stage 4 cancer and will not be able to read it. I may make it toThe Downton Abbey movie. I will have my daughters buy your book for my girlfriends.
Keep telling people what is going on with our country. To all your girlfriends, if you are
Thinking of doing something, going somewhere, do it. You won’t regret it. ❤️

The blessing of this note from you Nancy, means the world to me. No words, just tears and virtual hugs and love to you and your daughters. It has been a pleasure “knowing” you all these wonderful years, and having all these wonderful adventures together. Little things that have made our lives so sweet. Twelve was such a short time ago. Your words are the beauty of life. All my love, Susan

Nancy, First PRAYERS for you, but don’t give up. I had a neighbor with breast cancer at 80, and she survived and bless her soul she lived to be 94 years young this past June. Your comments are so full of love and HOPE and adventure. Thanks for reminding me to stop and do those things that I always put on the back burner. I won’t regret. Nor will you.. believe in the power of prayer… and any twelve year old knows wishing on a star and dreams do come true. You have made goals, to see the Downton Abbey Movie and read Susan’s book. BELIEVE AND YOU WILL. Dear Girlfriend, I know you are enjoying each moment of the days ahead of us…as I look at the Sunrises and the Sunsets I will be thinking of you and having a little talk with God about you. Love, Susan

    • Charlotte P Mcclure says:

Dear Nancy: I so wish i could know you personally… you sound like such a lovely person! I think anyone who is drawn together through Susan Branch has to be a wonderful, kind person. What a loving thing to have your daughters gift Susan’s new book to your girlfriends…it will bring such joy to both your daughters and your girlfriends. Thank you for your wonderful advice to do and go while we can. Your comments to Susan will never be forgotten by me. Enjoy Downtown Abbey!

Susan, I am SO sorry to hear about your wrist but incredibly glad to hear it is on the mend! “Notes on a Nervous Planet” sounds fascinating as I often wonder how the fixation with technology will affect human connection long term. Social media is certainly a double-edged sword with its ability to be both divisive and unifying. At the end of the day, there is absolutely nothing that can ever replace the real thing of face-to-face interactions with people. Thank you for such a generous giveaway and spreading so much joy each day! Sending all the good vibes your way and can’t wait to hear more from you soon!
