PARTY ♥ PARTY ♥ PARTY !

Party Party Party Party Party Party Party MUSICA

We go from party to another around here, from Tea Party to Birthday Party! Lots of our girlfriends are having a birthday month, lots of new babies are being born, but you may have noticed on your calendars, it’s also someone else’s birthday on Sunday, and she would be 147 years old.

H A P P Y    B I R T H D A Y

So what makes sense for today’s blog is cake and presents!  Right?  First we’ll have cake, and then we’ll have presents.  OK?  That’s the normal way for a Birthday Party! And never forget, we are the normal ones!

L A V E N D E R    P O L E N T A    C A K E

This Lavender Polenta Cake is a plain cake alright ~ really easy to make, deliciously moist with an amazing crunch, plus, it’s gluten free — but the recipe, which I got from my girlfriend Siobhan (“Shivon”) when we were in England, calls for ingredients that aren’t “everyday” fare.  Don’t let that stop you, because if you’re like me, and something tells me you are, this cake will become a standby.  The recipe calls for fine yellow cornmeal (or polenta flour) and almond flour.  Our supermarket carries them, but I’m pretty sure that won’t be true everywhere.  You can order them from the lovely Bob’s Red Mill web site.  If you’re not familiar with Bob’s Red Mill, you are in for a treat.  They also have everything you need to cook for a gluten free diet.

The recipe also calls for superfine sugar, which my market does not carry.  But I made my own, I just whirled regular sugar in the blender until it was superfine. Super easy!

No problem coming up with a pound of unsalted butter, allowed to come to room temperature.

In a large mixing bowl, beat the butter and sugar together until it’s . . .

. . . pale and light.

Then stir in the almond flour . . .

. . . and vanilla.

Beat in six eggs, one at a time (Don’t worry, I’m putting the recipe at the end of this as a party favor! )

I’ve made this cake with orange zest and juice, lemon zest and juice, and this time, with lime zest and juice.  All are truly wonderful, it’s up to you.  And btw, if you haven’t used one of these wonderful microplane zesters yet, we have them for you in our webstore, because they are a must-have tool!  No more knuckles in your food!  You pull the razor-sharp edges across the fruit, the zest collects on the top with no pain or strain at all . . . it makes it so easy to measure too.

So you fold in the zest and juice . . .

along with the polenta (cornmeal) flour, salt and baking flour … just pop it all in,

along with dried culinary lavender flowers (just click there to get them on-line).  The recipe calls for three tablespoons — and this is correct.  Don’t worry, it will not taste like soap, just so very light, and pretty in the cake.

This cake serves a lot of people ~ twenty four!  It’s perfect for a party, but you can also halve the recipe very easily and bake it in a 9″ cake pan. I wanted the big cake for our Tea Party but I don’t have the called-for 12″ cake pan, so I bake mine in this 12″ iron frying pan, which works perfectly.

Into the oven it goes until the house is filled with fragrance and the cake is brown.  Let it a cool a while, flip it over onto a serving plate and it comes right out of the pan.

And this is it, close up.  Delectable!  Also addictive.  Here’s the recipe as it will appear in our new book!

It’s your party favor, but there’s more.

And I have some heartstrings for you.  Starting with our Royal Baby Gift Giveaway.

Vanna left for the beach hours ago, but she didn’t forget to draw a name before she hopped into her yellow convertible 1959 T-bird and sped off, sunshine glinting off blonde curls blowing in the ocean air.  What a life that girl has!

Such a happy thing, a Baby Book, filled with love and hope and firsts for everything.  I’ve been loving the stories from our Girlfriends of babies coming, of new grandchildren on the way. I did not envy Vanna’s position of choosing just one winner.  I did ask her to try hard to get me someone who’s expecting a baby into their family.  And she did that.  Oh yes, she did that.

I’m thrilled to announce that the winner of this trio of gifts is a first-time mommy to-be who is decorating her own Peter Rabbit room for her first born child coming in September, a real “birth-day” . . . she’s having her own little Prince, and her name is OLIVIA.  So happy for you dear Olivia, congratulations to you and your whole family!  Let us know when the time is right and we will hold hands on this blog and say a prayer and say, “Pushhhhhh.”  We can be a big help! ♥  (Mas MUSICA)

So now, I have another little gift for you in honor of Beatrix Potter and you don’t even have to pin the tail on the donkey!  If you CLICK HERE, you can print out this name tag on card stock (just put it into your printer like regular paper, the printer will do the rest) . . .

. . . and then when you come to one of our book signings next month (and as we drive across country) you can wear your name tag and we’ll know we’re Blog Girlfriends ~ I’ll know you, and you’ll know each other!  Fun!  (Kellee is going to put this name tag on our EVENTS page, just in case you forget where it is.) ♥  And if this isn’t quite enough, I have something else for you . . .

. . . I’m thinking maybe a nice parting gift for everyone would be something to read?

Because we got a surprise on Friday . . . at our California studio . . .

Oh yeah girls, your books arrived!  Early!  Boxes and boxes of books,  A FINE ROMANCE ~ Falling in Love with the English Countryside! is born. What a cute baby!  Sweet smelling with ribbons and everything!  (I’m secretly screaming inside, how about you?  Did I surprise you?  They surprised me! :-))  The first page you have to read is Page 9 where I mention you.

And now these two darling girls, Kellee on the left, and Sheri on the right, with lots of help from our wonderful Alfredo, our right-hand man (on the truck but not looking at the camera), will ship their little fingers to the bone.  The books will leave the studio as they were ordered … the first of you to order will get yours first.  I have no idea how long it will take to get them all into their envelopes with addresses, so please be patient with us, because these two are the hardest workers in the world and will get them out as quickly as humanly possible!!!  Look how strong they look!

So of course, we are celebrating birth-days and dreams come true.  Our Twitter Girlfriend Janie made us a Dream Banner to match the Bon Voyage Banner she gave Joe and me when we went to England (you’ll see it in our book, in the stateroom on board the ship).  She made just a few for anyone who might want to focus on a dream for themselves.  They come with their own little envelope, and they’ll be in the web store on Monday.

And the last gift today, in honor of Beatrix Potter and Olivia, and all of you with new babies in your lives or hoping for one, or dreaming of one, or remembering what it was like to be one ~ these are the two games we used to play on our babies faces when I was little and the oldest of eight children.  The babies love it.

That’s it Girlfriends, for today, just another day in paradise.  Happy Birthday Beatrix! Congratulations Olivia!  Click teacups! Eat cake!  Happy weekend!  See you soon!  xoxo

  13. Kirsten from So. Cal. says:

Hi everyone! Well, I haven’t been here for quite awhile…..so you didn’t ruin my surprise… my BOOK came today!!!!!!!! Hurray! I couldn’t wait to open it. I was a little tiny bit disappointed to see that the dust cover was ripped a small tear near the binding. Then I opened the cover and saw that my copy was torn at the binding also. Looks like it may have been caught in a postal machine? It hasn’t stopped me from starting to read it! This is one of the most beautiful books I have ever seen! I’m sure all the girlfriends agree. Susan, you’ve really out done yourself!!!! I will also look forward to seeing you in So. Calif. I wouldn’t miss a chance to see you again!

    • sbranch says:

Please let me know if the book is too badly damaged to keep Kirsten. When I see you, we can exchange it. Happy it got there, hope we don’t have too much of this kind of thing!

  14. sondra fox says:

Hi Susan & Girlfriends, Most of you know that I usually write a long comment on each new blog. If you read what I have to say, you’ll know & perhaps remember that my dear husband has been fighting cancer. Larry is his name. He passed away Mon. night, releasing him from the horrible cancer that enveloped his body. He passed while at home with loved ones all around telling him how much they loved him, what a good father he was, how he’ll be missed, and so forth. Many of you have said that you’ve been praying for him. We appreciate all the prayers you’ve offered up for him. A nearby neighbor told me he saw two lights above our house at about the time Larry died. He looked again later & the lights had disappeared. He said he thinks the lights were angels coming after Larry, leading him home. This from a guy who is skeptical on all things that can’t be proven. He’s an engineer, just like our Larry was.
    (Sandy from Chihuahua Flats)

    • sbranch says:

Oh Sondra, that makes me so sad to hear. I am sure his release is yours too, and he is at peace. I don’t think it could have gone better, with his loved ones nearby and YOU and the memories. What more could any of us ask. Blessings to you. ♥ “Heaven is a place nearby, so there’s no need to say goodbye.” xoxo

      • Gail says:

        Dear Sandra,
I was so touched by your story of the lights above your home – surely, Larry’s angels.
It is always so hard to lose a loved one, but we go right on loving that person just the same as always. Love never dies.
Sending Love, Hugs and Prayers to you and your family.

        • Carilyn Wolski says:

My deepest sympathy to you Sondra….may God give you strength during this difficult time. Always keep the “happy” memories (of him) close in your heart….those can never be lost.

    • Sandy, may God’s peace continue to sustain you in the coming days as you discover more and more of His grace amidst life’s unchartered waters.

    • Debbie P ~ Weedsport, NY says:

      Dear Sandy~
I remember you telling us about your husband’s illness and I’ve prayed for you and your family. This must be the most difficult thing…saying good-bye. And yet, a blessing to have been able to be with Larry through it all…nothing is more intimate and more loving than that. Everything and everyone that we love, becomes a part of us and so he will live on in your heart, Sandy. Sending you peace and a big hug.
      xoDebbie

    • Lee Rose says:

Sondra, so sorry for your loss.

    • Julia says:

      Sandy,
You and your family have been in my prayers along with the other
girlfriends who are in the midst of troubled times. I have been
where you are and one thing I know is that the spirit of a person
never dies. They just live in a higher place. The later sad
memories will fade and the happy memories will take their place.
      Still praying for you. Julia

      • Joan Lesmeister says:

Prayers for you and your family Sondra.

      • Deborah Heater (Indiana) says:

Sondra, I am so sorry for your loss and prayers are being sent to you and your family. Your description of your husband’s passing made me tear up (my family is in the midst of sadness with my Dad’s frail health). I always give the same message to the family upon a death in their lives “May all the Special Memories give you Comfort at this time”…..I’m hoping this is true and I have been going to pictures of Dad this week and I must say it does make me feel better and they are priceless. Blessings

      • Shannon (Pennsylvania) says:

Oh Sandy, you and your husband have been in my prayers since you first told us about his illness. Your brave, strong, sweet spirit is evident in your posts. Larry left this world in the best way possible, surrounded by those he loved and who loved him back. I have not the slightest doubt that those two lights were indeed his own angels, sent to lead him home. Peace to you, dear girlfriend.

Praying for you, Sandy. May God bring you much comfort.
I heard a saying along time ago:
If God is with us and our loved one is with God, then our loved one is never far away.

    • Bonnie says:

Sandy, Time will heal the hurt, that ache in your chest that just doesn’t lift. It took a year and a half before it left my chest after by husband Jim went to heaven, released from diabetes that was destroying his body. What a joy to think of Larry and Jim in heaven, there to great us when we make the journey! The thought brings tears of joy to my eyes! May God ease your pain and may the sun shine upon your face. Love, Bonnie

      Sending prayers and hugs,
      Deb

Sandy — it sounds like Larry has a wonderful, loving family and the very best release from this life. I love the idea that angels might come for us to lead us home. He is experiencing so much love right now and new things. He is really fine and will want you and your family to rejoice in his life. He is not gone — just away.

      • sondra fox says:

Thank you Girlfriends for your wonderful friendship. I wish we all lived around one another so we could enjoy a cup of tea together. It made me feel so good this morning to see & read all the comments this morning on the passing of a wonderful person. Love to all of you. (Sandy from Chihuahua Flats)

      • Pat Johnson of Paso Robles says:

Sandy – Please know that I carry you in my heart. I know this is a tough time and, you are right, that family will hold you together. I know Larry was a very special husband and you have shared wonderful years together. I was happy to know that the family was together when this happened. I lost my husband, Fred, in December and all the kids came as soon as they knew what was happening. We all sat around in the room with Fred and talked memories and laughed about funny times and just were a “family” during a difficult time. They say that the spirit goes when you die, but I am sure he stayed around to enjoy all of his family and children. I miss him each and every day and am so thankful that he was a part of my life and the memories remain to make me smile. Take one day at a time and remember – it is completely all right to cry. Hugs……Pat from CA

  15. Judy J. from W.Warwick, RI says:

I signed in to my e-mail this morning and found out that my book has shipped! I’m jumping up and down and squealing like those crazy people on game shows!
    Thanks for making my day!

  16. Dena says:

just wanted to tell you i baked your lavender cake, when i read it , i wondered where am i gona find lavender, after i read it that morning, i had went shopping at my local T J MAX , THERE it was ,of course bought it, then i stopped at my local Winn Dixie to get a few groceries i needed, There it was !! the Almond Flour !!!! same brand !, Big Lots had some of his products , but not the almond flour, So i took it as an omen, I had to try your cake, it was soooo good !!!!, I couldn’t wait, I ate it warm , yum, Then i had it for breakfast with my coffee, IT is addictive !! Every time i went near the kitchen i had to eat a piece, Its sort of like between a sweet corn bread, and cake, with a touch of crunch from the lavender, I had to start giving pieces of it away, before i ate the whole thing. Wondering if you could put that lavender in rice when it is cooked, like the jasmine rice,My friend made jasmine rice, and served with her chicken sausage combo it was great, never would have thought. Well that recipe is a keeper, and goes into my favorite recipe book. Thanks again for your recipes, I always love trying them.

    • sbranch says:

So glad you liked it! You could put lavender in rice, no problem, be careful though ~ too much really does make things taste like soap. But just a little would be beautiful and fragrant.

  17. Laura Ann in Vermont says:

IT’S HERE!!! All the way from Arroyo Grande, CA to the Northeast Kingdom of Vermont in two days!! And it’s even signed! Susan, you are the sweetest person ever. The book is beautiful!! Gotta go–things to do, er, read!!

  18. Maureen MacKenzie says:

Yea! Your book just came in the mail today. It’s beautiful…I’m so excited…can’t you tell?!

  19. Debbie says:

Can’t wait for my book to arrive. Love this post…Anything with the word corn in it lights up my eyes.

    • sbranch says:

      Corn?

      • Elaine in Toronto says:

I think Debbie means the corn meal in the polenta cake, lol. Am wondering if the international orders, ie orders to Canada and other countries will go out the same time as the U.S. ones in order received or after all the domestics orders are filled? Just asking. I don’t mind waiting. Sweet anticipation.

        • sbranch says:

Aha! That corn! 🙂 The orders are going out in the order they were ordered. (Editors would not care for that word usage!) Doesn’t matter to where. The PO seems to be doing a very quick job of it, but I’m not sure what happens when there’s a border involved! Hopefully, soon. I really think the girls will have all the books out by, maybe the latest, next Tuesday.

  20. Debbie in Connecticut says:

My book arrived today! It is beautiful….and thank-you so much for signing it, that is an added treat. I’ve never had a girlfriend who’s been published before!
Thanks again, it was well worth waiting for!

  21. Anne Branco says:

Received an e-mail that my book is shipping! Can’t wait, can’t wait, can’t wait!!!

  22. Hello Girlfriends!
I live in Ohio and I just got my book today!!!!!! This book is incredible Susan, it’s like one of those huge gift shops filled to the brim with everything you love. You don’t know where to look first and you know you need to go back time and time again just to see everything. I ordered another one yesterday for my moms birthday in August, she is going to fall in love with it. Before my dad died, it was her dream to go to England and they did several years ago. Ever since she’s had tea parties, bought books on England, subscribed to Victoria magazine….I cannot wait to give it to her. Congratulations Susan on a masterpiece!!!! Now I must go and find a place to start in this book…should I read it like normal, no, too antsy for that….must start in the middle I think!
    Kathy from Ohio

    • sbranch says:

Ohio! Perfect for your mom! Sounds like she went through sort of what I went through, you get a little, and you just want more! Thank you Kathy!! Happy Birthday to your mom!

  23. Well, I just read page nine and the dedication to your blog girlfriends and the tears started coming. Tears of happiness and joy and relief I suppose. Any other girlfriends have a similar reaction? I’m proud and happy to have been allowed to experience the birth of this lovely book. Job well done dearest Susan!

    • sbranch says:

I’m proud and happy to have had you with me all along. It made the journey so much more fun! xoxo Thank you Deb!

      • Pat Johnson of Paso Robles says:

Tears of joy, for sure! After thinking about MY reaction and then reading how others reacted, I realize the pride I feel and the act that our BFF has made all of us feel so very special. Read on, Deb, and I will think of you as I read. XXXXOOOO Pat from CA

  24. Connie Martin says:

Hi Susan, Oh my gosh!! My book just arrived. I cannot tell you how excited I am. Okay, maybe you know. I was so excited to see the autographed bookplate inside. You are the best. Tell Kellee and Sheri and Alfredo they have done a great job. I just got my email yesterday and my book today. I am leaving for vacation tomorrow and was hoping, but not expecting, to take it along, oh, I am so happy. I love the last picture of two sweethearts, a perfect ending. Love, Connie – I hope you come to the Country Living Fair in Columbus!

  26. Cheryl McAfee says:

Oh frabjous day! A Fine Romance (I always seem to sing the title) arrived! I happened to have taken a few days off work since my daughter and granddaughter are visiting, and snatched it up the moment it hit the doorstep.

I’ve read about a hundred pages, and just had to stop and tell you it’s just as wonderful as I thought it would be. I love how you started off by telling us the story of how you and Joe met. And then whoosh…..we’re off to sea with you! I always want all the details, so I love how you even painted the layout of your stateroom for us. Oh, Susan, you were so thoughtful to take us along with you, and to have produced this lovely book so we can re-live the trip over and over again. I will first devour it, then enjoy it again more slowly with a pot of tea (Queen Mary or Prince of Wales, my neck-and-neck favorites) and perhaps a scone with lemon curd.

I do hope your book tour includes a location in Missouri, or somewhere close so I can come appreciate you in person! 🙂

Thank you again for the joy you spread to us.

Oh joy! What a surprise, my book came today! I haven’t even read messages or been on the computer for a few days, so I wasn’t prepared for this! I wish I didn’t have to work tonight, so I could stay home and read this sweet little beauty!
It is just so darn cute! I need more exclamation marks!!! LOL!

    Thank you so much, Susan!

  29. Julia says:

You really, really do love us!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Dedicating the book to your blog girlfriends. So sweet.
We did enjoy the trip and I’m driving 6 hours tomorrow
just so I can meet the mailman. When we were talking
about the dolls that we had someone didn’t know about
Miss Revlon. She was the forerunner of the Barbie.
We lived out of the country when I got my Miss Revlon
and we could not get the clothes so my mother made some
for me. She made dresses and tiny little underwear –
undies and bras. Wish I still had them. I also finger
danced with her shoes. She only had the one pair that
    she came in.

  30. Shannon (Pennsylvania) says:

IT’S HERE, IT’S HERE!! And Susan, it is beautiful. I read page 9 first, then the dedication page 🙂 Joe is a doll, isn’t he? Well done, sweet girlfriend, well done. I’m going to savor every page, every photo, every drawing….so happy!

    • Shannon (Pennsylvania) says:

OK, so much for savoring every page….I just tore through the love story chapter. Oh my goodness, girlfriends, I don’t know how the book can get any better than this. Now I’m going to force myself to s-l-o-w down and make the reading of this delightful book last as long as possible. Joe, Susan, you were absolutely made for each other. Love and blessings to you both 🙂

    • sbranch says:

Oh yeah, he’s a doll. Thank you Shannon.

  31. Elaine McCallum says:

  32. Giovanna says:

    Susan,

It’s here!! I just took a walk to my mailbox, which is down the road, and was thrilled to find my book inside….or should I say your book 🙂 OMGoodness, it’s beautiful….every page a work of art! Thank you so much for the dedication. I know I am only one of millions of your Blog Girlfriends, but I feel so special that you put so much of your heart and soul into this little treasure.

Your talent, your warmed, your love for all things English and your generous spirit in sharing is so clearly designed on every page.

    Thank you so very much,
    Your friend always,
    Giovanna

  33. JoAnne Daniels says:

I got a double surprise today — I know you said A Fine Romance would be coming early, but I was excited to get notification this morning that it had been shipped to me. I’m thinking, it’s coming from CA, so probably a few days —
BUT NO! Imagine my surprise when I went home for lunch from the library and found this wonderful package sitting in my mailbox!!! I scarfed down my salad as I hungrily paged through the book — IT’S WONDERFUL! I had to head back to work for the afternoon, but I can’t wait to start reading. I brought it to the library with me (I’ll make sure they order some copies) and showed it to my friend who is traveling to England the end of August. She said she was surprised that I didn’t call in and say I wouldn’t be back this afternoon! I told her she could look at it but only after I’d had my fill.
I have another friend who loves all things English and I hope she can come with me to the book signing in NJ. I know mine is already signed but you could scribble in it some more!! This has made my day — because I have access to mylar jackets, I’ve already covered it to prevent it from becoming torn or dog eared while it’s still new. I will certainly treasure this “gift” from a most generous woman — thank you Susan.
    JoAnne

    • sbranch says:

I like the attitude of your friend who thought you should take the day off work! 🙂 cute! Thank you JoAnne!

      • JoAnne Daniels says:

It hasn’t been 24 hours (with a night’s sleep in-between) and I’m almost done with our book. I read over half last night and decided to get a little shut-eye and savor the rest today…am I ever! I like the comment about the way the book smells…you don’t get THAT with a tablet!! I showed our book to my friend Doreen and she said “Oh, there’s so much eye candy”! It’s so READABLE — I just wanted to keep going, page by page. I pretty much started at the beginning (thanks for the dedication to The Girlfriends) but I couldn’t resist the temptation to skip ahead! Your illustrations and photos are delicious. I plan to try a recipe or two as well, and I love your tips for traveling in England. I don’t know if I would have thought about the fact that, not only are you struggling to stay on the left side of the narrow roads, but that if you had a stick-shift, you’d have to master that with your left hand as well! Kudos to Joe for getting you back in one piece….I could just picture your antics trying to pick up the camera lens from the middle of the narrow road — it would have made a great video for YouTube! I’m getting towards the end now and I hate to finish it, actually! It’s just like those wonderful books you get lost in and never want the story to end. Thanks again for a great read — you’re the best girlfriend ever — and thanks to everyone else who helped make it possible for A Fine Romance to arrive at my doorstep. Cherri-o!
JoAnne in rainy NJ secretly pretending that she’s in England!

        • sbranch says:

Rain is a big help for pretending JoAnne, thank you SO much! xoxo

          • JoAnne Daniels says:

Susan — I was wondering if you’re familiar with a book titled “Hedgerow” by Eric Thomas & John T. White? It was published in 1983 but can still be purchased from Amazon. I bought a copy for myself years ago because I was in love with the watercolor illustrations. In some ways it seems like a children’s book but it has a lot of information about the history and make-up of England’s hedgerows and why they are so important to the environment. I’m thinking you will love the illustrations!!
            JoAnne

          • sbranch says:

I wonder if it’s the one Joe bought in England? I will look for it JoAnne, thank you!

  34. Jackie Bienemann says:

  38. My book is here! Only took a break to get my Susan Branch sticky labels so I can mark the quotes I want to write in my journal! I’ve not yet reached the Preface page! What other book would I read the copyright information! Don’t want to miss a word!

  39. Tricia Neron says:

My husband and I just got home from a long hot day at the Roger Williams Zoo with our son. It’s an hours drive and we are all spent, I am dragging myself into the house emptying back packs and putting away juice boxes. When all of a sudden my husband comes in the house with the mail, and low and behold he is holding A Fine Romance. Before he can even say a word, I drop everything squeal with delight, he and my son are wondering “what the heck is going on” and I am flipping through the pages, beaming with joy and laughter. “No one is to disturb Mummy tonight boys”. I will be in my bed, under my fluffy covers with a cup of tea. Heaven, all I can say is heaven.

  40. Mary S. says:

I got my book, I got my book, I got my book!! I hadn’t read this blog yet, so when I went to get my mail today, I saw the package but not where it was from. I thought, Hmmmmm, did I order a book? (I’m always ordering books!) So I brought it in, then looked at the return address – Susan Branch Studios! Could it be The Book?!?!? No! Not so soon!!! With trembling hands, I tore it open! Yes! It is!!! I am sooooo excited!! I am going to try to save it to read on our vacation at the coast in a week and a half! It’s beautiful!!! XOXOXO And I am going to print out the name tag to wear when we see you in San Luis Obispo in November! Yay!!!
Love from Mary S. in Fresno, CA

    • sbranch says:

      See you then Mary!!

      • Mary S. says:

Ok, I couldn’t wait for our vacation to start The Book – I started it last night! It’s sooooo wonderful!! As usual, you make me laugh and cry, but when I got to the part about your cute belt falling off and “…it felt like my underwear had fall down!” I laughed so loud I almost woke up my husband who was sleeping next to me! Awesome!!
Love from Mary S. in Fresno, CA

  41. Barb in MI says:

I’m busy preparing for my tea party tomorrow. I put the scones in the oven and walked to the mailbox and… there it was! Your book has arrived and it is a treasure beyond belief! I’ve been skimming through, enjoying your artwork, photos, quotes, and maps. I can’t wait to show my girlfriends tomorrow – one of whom is married to an Englishman. I also can’t wait till I’m not so busy preparing for the party so that I can really get into the book! Thank you for sharing your dream with us and taking the time to sign all of our bookplates. You are one special lady!

  42. shirley burt says:

    Susan,
I am still waiting for my notice that the most anticipated book has been shipped. Patience is hard, but while practicing that patience, I must say , “I adore your pedestal cake plate the much talked about cake is resting upon .” How lovely to have one with the angles to make it look even more special than it tastes. That would be almost impossible.
Thank you sweet Susan, you have a most generous heart.
    Love and bunny hugs,
    Shirley

  43. Pat Johnson of Paso Robles says:

IT CAME TODAY! IT CAME TODAY! “A FINE ROMANCE” IS HERE!!!!!! The door bell rang and I was still in my nightgown – looked out the window and no one was there – strange – and then my brain kicked into gear and I thought “wait – could it be….????” Opened the door and there was the box and I started to cry tears of joy and appreciation for my BFF who gave me the opportunity of a lifetime – My dear Susan – AFR is more than I could have ever imagined!! I have goose bumps and tears STILL…… I opened the book and the memories floated out and filled me with excitement (hadn’t read it – it was the essence that permeated out of the book and into my face – is this drama, or what?) . I read the Dedication (Oh, that Joe is so marvelous & sweet) and page 9! That is all….because I will put it in my suitcase to read at the cabin!! And when the Highway Patrol stop me for speeding – I will just introduce him/her to my BFF Susan Branch!!!! I will NEVER be able to thank you enough for the trip and the book – BFF – I LOVE YOU!!! Great-Granma Pat Johnson

  44. Lorraine From White Plains, NY says:

It’s a gorgeous day here in New York, and I didn’t think it could get any better – until I found your book in the morning’s mail! Yay! I’ve been having such trouble lately getting my mail delivered (my house has only been on this same corner since 1795!) I was afraid it might end up on the island of lost parcels (just south of the dead letter office). Big WHEW! Taking the rest of the afternoon off to start reading. Just so happened I finished making a batch of almond shortcake to go along with my tea and your book… bliss!

  45. Jill says:

    Dear Susan,

I was SO excited to receive my book today and although I knew it would be wonderful, I have to tell you that as I opened it up and read a few random sentences I had to actually sit down. The book, for me, clearly reflects not only the fondness you have for all things British, but more importantly your love of life. It pops off the pages!! Whoosh! Totally hits me between the eyes!! What a wonderful gift you have. Thank you.

  46. Jen says:

Oooh! Oooh! Oooh! Your book came today, and I am sooo excited, oooh! I plan to savor it like . . . the last chocolate chip cookie!

  47. Millie Ray says:

Oh, my goodness! What a joy, the book arrived today, and I’m enjoying it slowly, to grasp every little thing you write. You are so talented. I just finished a book last night and was going for another today, but then I got the mail!! The inside cover is so inspiring and perfect for the contents, and the special sticker on the title page is precious, thank you for the most revered book in my personal library. Central Kentucky is overcast and dreary today, but you brought us some sunshine.

  48. Donna Ackermann says:

Susan, omg!!! What a wonderful surprise in my mailbox today. The book is absolutely beautiful. It even smells good. I will treasure it always and plan on ordering a few for bffs. I think I will have to put my Dan Brown aside so I can start reading your gift to all of us. I knew a shipment had arrived, but I didn’t know my copy would arrive so soon. Actually didn’t remember when I ordered it. I probably will never get to make his journey, but making it with you in this book is second best. You have outdone yourself! Thank You!

  49. Carolyn says:

    Hello Susan,

This afternoon, when I got home from work, there was a package in my mailbox. “WOW,” I thought. “That was the fastest shipping ever!” I had bought a book on the half.com website on Monday, and couldn’t believe it was already here. I set the mail outside, watered the flowers, had a snack, did some computer work, and then thought, “Oh yes, my book.” In my head, I had already begun to compose the positive feedback response that I was going to leave for the seller. Well, imagine my surprise and delight when I opened the package to find that it was YOUR book! Yes, I KNEW it had shipped, and was SO looking forward to its arrival. But somehow, it had slipped my mind. I have been taking two graduate courses since May 21, plus have been working full-time all the while. I am so exhausted I can’t think clearly anymore! Anyway, just wanted to say thank you for making my day. I have a presentation to give in class tonight so must get going. “A Fine Romance” is on the TOP of my “List of things to do after August 12.” (The last day of the semester) So nice to have something to look forward to. THANK YOU!

    • sbranch says:

Aren’t surprises wonderful! Congratulations on all the hard work you are doing with your schooling, good for you Carolyn!

      • Carolyn says:

Thanks, Susan! It hasn’t been easy, but it will be well worth it.
I neglected to say two things in my original comment:
        1. I am going for my Masters Degree in Art Education.
        2. Your blog is one of my favorite escapes. I love your happy, sunny world! When I am feeling overwhelmed and in need of a lift, I will think, “I wonder what Susan is up to?” I head over here, step into your world for a while, and all is well again.
I am in Massachusetts, so I hope to see you on the road 🙂
        Thanks again,
        Carolyn

I quickly took care of all of the absolutely necessary things, made myself a cup of coffee (in lieu of tea), and sat down to enjoy your lovely journey. I would not let myself casually flip through this book, but carefully started at the very beginning. It is, sigh, wonderful….I will take my time to savor it in the coming days. THANK YOU for sharing your beautiful world!

That said, no supper for husband, no dog chow for the Scotties, I am off to curl up with what looks like a wonderful read.
Too bad this is the weekend of our annual girl’s trip to Grand Lake, CO, so maybe I will take my book along and see if I can get in some reading time. I willshare the book with them, so if I do not get it back, there will be dire consequences!!!!

  64. Carol Moon says:

    Dear Susan,
I’m sitting on my couch looking out on our lake in Knoxville Tennesse with your book in my lap. I am wanting to go slow and savor every page, and yet I keep flipping from page to page in awe of all you wrote, and all you painted, and all of your warm and heartfelt prose on every page. Then I close it, and say to myself, “Start at the beginning!” So I do–and then flit ahead again, seduced by more beautiful pictures! It feels like a gift just came in the mail, especially for me!

Thank you for making us feel such a part of your travels, and thank you for letting us have a peek inside your love story. I grew up very close to you in Southern California in the 50s and 60s and your memories are my memories, from the beach, to camping in the mountains with our Chevy station wagon ( only 2 kids though so nobody had to sit in the way back) to your cheese cake recipe and onion dip~ seems like our mothers must have known each other! So thank you for helping me recapture my childhood memories. And thank you for this wonderful gift from your heart! I will savor every minute of it!

    Warmly,
    Carol

    • sbranch says:

Carol, that’s exactly how I looked at it when I first got it — in a sort of delirium! Love those good memories!

I’m going for a cup of tea now and will fall right into it. Thank you for this gift from the heart. It will always be appreciated. xxoo

  67. nancy says:

Couldn’t believe the book came today after just getting notification yesterday that it had shipped. It’s a rainy, warm day here in Michigan – just the perfect day to “cocoon” with THE book! It’s just wonderful! I really need to follow #3 and #4 of the New Rules and go to England too. All of your very early mornings of writing were well worth it. Thanks for all of your efforts!

    • sbranch says:

I think about 3 and 4 all the time. 4 will be taken care of soon, as we drive across the country! Thank you Nancy!

  68. Gail G. says:

    Hi, Susan,
I received your book this afternoon, and finally was able to sit down to enjoy this treasure that you have given us. Special thanks to Kellee and Sherri too for getting it to me so quickly.

I finally forced myself to get up and finish making dinner. LOL. I am just enthralled with your book. My husband and I have been to England twice, but never by ship. We are in love with the countryside, and consider ourselves true Anglophiles.

From the wonderful story of your romance with Joe, to the crossing over the Atlantic (we’ve been on terrific cruises, but never a “crossing”), I feel like I have a front-row seat to your adventures. My memories of being on a ship, coupled with your descriptions, make me feel part of the experience. How fabulous for us all to live this adventure! I am on page 91 already, and know that I will be rereading your book many times over.

Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

    Sincerely,
    Gail from Port Jefferson, NY

    • sbranch says:

And back to you from the bottom of mine. Kellee just commented on FOSB “It makes my heart happy to read all your comments.” I know exactly how she feels!

There’s a rip-roaring thunderstorm brewing outside, so that adds to the..EEEP!!! an enormous boom that just shook the house. So that adds to the wonderfullness!! Sitting on my front porch with a lovely cool breeze lying in wait for the UPS truck to roll up. Checked the UPS website and it states it’s out for delivery – yipeeee!! That UPS driver may very well see a bit of crazy and feel seismic-like activity with all the jumping around I’m likely to do. I’m just saying, I’m not crossing the threshold of my house without “A Fine Romance” in hand 🙂

  75. Deb from Dixie says:

Your book arrived today and it is so beautiful!!! I am waiting until I have more than five minutes to myself before I start reading it, as I know I won’t want to stop. Thank you so much for taking us along on your trip AND thank you for signing all the little bookplates for the books. It is the icing on the cake!

  80. Lorraine from White Plains, NY says:

Wonderful! Just…. wonderful! I think you will be single-handedly responsible for thousands of reservations on the QM2 and a virtual onslaught of Yanks invading England in the coming months and years. I’d better make my reservations for a crossing now! Congratulations, Susan. Your excitement and wonder and LOVE shone through each page. I’m exhausted, having taken the the two month tour in a matter of hours! But, well worth it. Now, off to bed… perchance to dream, of England in the spring….

  81. Lorraine says:

It came today!!! I got the email that said it was on it’s way – and it came! Oh happy day!!! Happy, happy day! I have been carrying it with me everywhere I go since it arrived. So excited. Savoring each page, each picture, and smiling a lot… I’m up to page 57. Ahhhhh, now I’m set for a “crossing.” It’s wonderful.

Girlfriends – if you haven’t ordered one, please accept this advice and do so right away.

Sure hope you’re coming to IL so I can give you a hug. Life is good. Thank you.

  82. Karen says:

Guess what came in the mail today? Yeeeeeessss! My husband got a book he ordered yesterday and I got mine today (and I wasn’t expecting it until maybe September)! And guess how we’re spending our evening? Love it, love it, love it. You’ve been leaving a tempting little crumb trail in your blog, and now I’ve got the whole thing. Such fun.

  83. Margot in Virginia Beach says:

I got a blog this afternoon dated June 5th about an index. Is that correct??? I am waiting for THE e-mail about my copy.
I have exciting news!!! I went to two places in Williamsburg to create interest in your book, The Scotland House and the B&N, which is the campus bookstore for William and Mary. I talked to Sheri before I left the house and I made up cards with the pertinent information to contact. Next week I am going to a bookstore in Kitty Hawk on the Outer Banks. I am also going to call a bookstore in Appleton, WI, which is near quite a few girlfriends there. Hopefully, you will get some calls. (The guy at B&N said he sees that the book is to be released in September, and I told him it is rolling off the presses now. He will be talking to his events planner.) It is tought to find private bookstores anymore.
Anyway…Woo Hoo!!! You’re on a roll now girlfriend!
    Margot

  84. Darlene says:

  86. Cynthia Avalos says:

Susan, I’m reading your book and have to force myself to put it down. I want to “savor” it! I love to read anyway, but you make me feel like I’m right there with you so it’s hard to put down! I want to make it last!

  87. Nancy says:

My book came today….my book came today…..my book came today! Thank you

  89. Yvonne in NC says:

My book arrived today! So happy!! It seems just like yesterday that we took this journey through England together. Hard to believe it was a year ago. I’ve looked through every page with delight… now I will start at the beginning and read each word… relishing every page of “our” book. Thank you so much for such a beautiful book. I love it!!!!

  90. Ting Enriquez says:

    Hi Susan!

I’m from the Philippines and my sister and BIL in Chicago ordered a copy of All Good News and A Fine Romance for me. They already received the AGN and received notification that my copy of AFR is on the way. They will then be sending me both books soon. Before Christmas, I hope. I am so excited and I know it will be worth the wait. I just love your works. All the best and more power! 😀

  91. Vickie Getty (Little Rock, AR) says:

They arrived today! My daughter and daughter-in-love (law) are getting a copy too. We will spend time on the front porch, in the swing, ooohing and ahhhing I’m sure! It starts with the signed bookplate, all the illustrations and photos. Oh my goodness you have OUTDONE yourself! How in the world do you do it all? Thank you for sharing the beauty of your talent!!!!!

    • sbranch says:

I can’t help but think of that old quote, the love in your heart wasn’t put there to stay, love isn’t love til it’s given away. xoxo

  92. Gail Buss says:

Dear Susan, It’s been hard to get on the email because we have out of town company and by bedtime I’m so tired but I just read that “my book” or should I say “your book” or “our book” has shipped and I just can’t wait to get it. Can’t wait to see if I can find the special types of flours for the polenta cake which sounds out of this world. I’m sure you are so very excited too. So much work and now its finally ready. I just know you will have a wonderful time at all the book signings, and I wish you a safe journey on your trip across this great nation of ours. Btw, I tried the Linguine with White Clam Sauce and it was very good and my daughter loved it. Special congrats to Olivia on winning. And, special prayers for the Sandra Fox family. May he rest in peace. Gail Buss

  93. Barb From Ohio says:

    Hi Susan,
Your book arrived today and I’ve been pouring over it all afternoon and evening. I shouldn’t be reading it so fast; should be taking my time and savoring every page, because it’s that good! You’ve put so much beautiful artwork, photos and the story of your adventure in England into it, it’s hard to put down. The descriptions you give along with the paintings and photos make me feel like I was really there myself experiencing everything you saw and did. I’m on page 160, and I’ll probably finish it tomorrow, but I know I’ll be going back to re-read it all over again.

  94. Dawn (Elmhurst, IL) says:

Oh Susan, our treasure arrived in my mailbox today! So exciting… I even took a picture of the package before I carefully opened it!! With a cup of tea and gingerbread scones (heart-shaped, baked yesterday in anticipation!), I started to read… with tears in my eyes. Thank you so much for sharing the story of how you and Joe met. It’s soooo sweet!! It felt like we were right there with you on the crossing. I was holding my breath as Joe drove for the first time! (I don’t think I’ll share that entry with John. He’s already mentioned how scary the driving might be!) At the moment, we have just visited Charleston. I am truly savoring every word, every brushstroke, every photograph!!!!!! Susan, you are the most wonderful storyteller and a dear friend to share this magical adventure with all of us!! I wish I could read more slowly, so that the book would last forever. But I am captivated… and can’t put it down!! I know that I will reread it so many times. Each time I see a little star, I smile. On the second reading, I will follow all of the links. You have thought of everything!!
Thank you and Joe for letting us share this special adventure! We love you!!!!
    So many hugs,
    Dawn
    ♡♡

    • sbranch says:

Thank you, Dawn, it is wonderful to finally see reactions! Every author puts their heart into their books, but you never know how your book might be received. It’s downright thrilling to read comments like yours. xoxo

  95. Okay…I’ve regained my composure now after my previous excitable comment due to very loud thunder and your new book. I just want to say how MUCH I love it! (I’m up to page 62 now). Some parts make me laugh out loud and all parts make me smile…it’s a real page turner, for sure! So much for savoring it like a box of chocolates! I usually eat them all at once anyway. 🙂 My kitty Lulu Belle and I both love the red ribbon bookmark even though she would like to destroy it as she sits on my lap. And I love the way the binding goes “creeeak” when I open and close it! This book is such a treasure, and I can imagine all of us who got our books in the mail today reading it right now…and then the next group will get theirs and read it at the same time, and it will sort of be like all of us doing the “wave” book-reading style! Thank you, Susan for sharing with us your words, your art, your music, your heart! ♥ What a beautiful book!

  96. Martha Ellen of VA says:

Susan I received your lovely book this afternoon! I have been reading it ever since. That’s why I’m still up at 2:51am!! Congratulations to you! I love it! xoxo ♥

  97. N. Jean says:

Oh my! The book arrived in the mail yesterday. I took it out of the mailbox and was so excited, I opened the front cover and was delighted. I am reading it slowly and began with the story of you and Joe. I loved it. So looking forward to the next chapter!!

  98. Jackie P says:

“The” book arrived yesterday! I worked late and by the time I finished with dinner, etc., went to bed late BUT, stayed up until 12:35 a.m. reading your book. Am halfway to England now! Congratulations. It is a treasure.

  99. ChristinaB - Yardley, Pa says:

My copy arrived yesterday and I quickly went on my screened in porch to sniff the wonderful scent, touch the pages and move the ribbon marker around. It’s such a treasure, Susan! Then I promptly started reading about how you and Joe met. I really want to savor the book through the rest of the summer.
I’ve contacted customer service as I had pre-ordered my book back in February and there wasn’t a signed bookplate enclosed but more importantly, I received TWO copies and only ordered one. I’m waiting to hear about returning the extra one. But thank you for such a treasure.

    • sbranch says:

Hmmmm, that’s interesting! 🙂 I’m sure they took good care of you Christina, so sorry it was a little mixed up!

    • Margot in Virginia Beach says:

What if you could pay for the extra book, and keep it for a gift for a girlfriend or family member for Christmas???

  100. Deborah Heater (Indiana) says:

Rabbit, Rabbit….and HAPPY BIRTHDAY to my Angela!!! I have been thinking this morning about every birthday party theme, cakes, just the joy of her birthday over the years. I won’t be able to see and hug her today which makes me sad; but, we are driving to KY to visit her at work on Saturday as a surprise. Angela is a server at a Tex Mex Restaurant and now that she is working for tips and I could tell you horror stories about that…..we are going to sit in her area, treat her with respect, and Dad will give her the tip of her life so she will always remember it!!! I know it isn’t “real life” and believe me she knows that BUT I’m missing her birthday and surprising her will give me joy. I’m so happy to read all the excitement with the girls receiving their books and I’m getting excited waiting for my email notice. I’m sure some have already finished reading your book and finding it very hard not to discuss it with you. Please tell Kellee/Sheri (your elves) we all appreciate their hard work.
