Crazy with Joy . . .

What kind of a crazy person would EVER update her blog if she knew that the previous post would work itself down and become part of internet never-never land?  I really don’t know.  But she would probably like MUSICA when she did it . . .

As you may have been able to tell, I’ve had a hard time forcing myself to post something new.  I never want to let go of that pool of light called “comments” from that last post!   Before last week I never knew for sure what you might think of A FINE ROMANCE.  Of course I did my best, but self-criticism is one of my middle names (I have other nicer middle names, like cake-baker and cat-feeder).  I’ve been on cloud nine ever since the very first one of you got our book.  Thank you Girlfriends, for your thoughts, lovely words and sentiments.  You, who bought the book even when I was still writing it, sight unseen, because you had faith in me.  I don’t know what to say, I’m so touched.

And today I found out we already have NINE reviews for our book on Amazon, and I KNOW that has to be you girls, because no one has the book so far, but you!  I’m so happy you like it, hap-hap-happy!  It’s like giving your niece a sweater at Christmas and finding out SHE LIKES IT.  You know how good that feels?  Well, times that by a million, and you almost know how happy I am.  Doing this book with you has been a pure treat!  Better than I ever imagined.  So much more fun for me.  I wasn’t alone.  Everything felt good.  Thank you Thank you!  Pretty soon we hit the road, driving across country state to state, where I hope to meet as many of you as possible.  We leave the island at the end of August.  And the clock is ticking!

Our book seems to have started without us . . . this is a photo from Kathy, one of our girlfriends, who took her book up to the gorgeous Mt. Washington Hotel ~ a place I went one time and found some of my dreams. I can’t tell you how happy it makes me to see the book out on vacation!  She told me she read it while sitting in a rocking chair on that gorgeous porch with the fragrance of the New Hampshire mountains all around!  Lucky book and lucky Kathy!

So here it is, in case you haven’t seen it, here’s our Fine Romance van, all decorated for the trip.  We put a photo of the English Countryside on it!  I think it’s cute, but Joe is still in eye-roll mode.  It’s good we are balanced.

Please keep your eye on “EVENTS” (in the right-hand column of this blog) to see where it will be stopping and come see us!  Be sure to print out your Girlfriend Name Tags . . . we also have them for the boys now ♥.  They’re on the Events page too.  And we’re still adding bookstores; we have a long way to go, so keep the faith that we will be somewhere relatively (compared to here anyway) near you. ♥  Our first booksigning is on Martha’s Vineyard, next week, the 15th of August at the Bunch of Grapes Bookstore ~ where I had my first book signing ever, all those years ago . . .

So what else?  Well, I designed the covers for our 2015 Calendars so they could be ready for insert into the manufacturer’s catalog while we’re away.  Yes, 2015!  I thought you might like a preview of the wall calendar ( up there )  Pink!  (And yes, I designed a new Blotter for 2015 too!)  This is why I never know what year it is!  I hope you all got your 2014 calendars, cuz it’s 2013 and time to do that!

Besides that, I’ve been getting things ready for us to go. Cleaning the house, getting it ready for winter actually, because that’s what it will be when we get back home, and we will want it cozy.  We even ordered firewood!  I’m spending extra time hugging the kitties and shooting the rubber band for Jack.  I also updated the I LOVE ENGLAND part of the blog and added our visit to the wonderful house in Chawton where Jane Austen lived and wrote.  I wanted to make sure she got some of the prime real estate of love.   And look what else I found . . .

Joe’s Hat!  They just came in . . . the perfect stocking stuffer!  Isn’t my model adorable?  We got them in a couple of colors . . . I wear berets too, they are cozy and warm and do the job for our winters, but I have to admit, they look cutest on Joe!

And something else new arrived the other day (I do believe in continuous small treats!) ~ something I think you will love too . . .

Here’s the mock up I made of it with glue and paper . . .

And now, the real thing!  In my time I have very rarely had something manufactured!  Being as small as we are, all the paperwork and time involved makes it prohibitive, plus they have “minimums” which means you have to order a gazillion of anything, and like I said, we are small.  But I started thinking about my favorite tea, and thinking, I need a cute tea tin, and thinking, I’m going to get one made!   And here it is, the very first one, hot off the press.

Here’s the top.

and here’s the side . . .

. . . and here it is on top of my stove.   Then I thought, even though this Tea Tin would work great for cookies, crackers, coffee, marshmallows or just about anything, we probably need some actual TEA for it.  And because I’m partial to my Lavender and Roses Dessert Tea . . .

. . . because, for one thing, it looks like it comes right out of the garden!  So Joe looked around and he found a tea company that would allow me develop my own blend and soon, very soon, bags of this delicious loose tea I took with me to England and described in our book, will be coming into the studio.  I drink my Lavender and Roses “Fine Romance” Earl Grey tea in one of my favorite cups almost every day at 4 pm.  It is the perfect afternoon tea, because with a little honey and some half and half, it’s just like dessert.

“The heart-opening, wink-tippling” tea tradition I love.

And this is another one . . . my “every-day” tea which we will also be carrying in the web store.  This is the tea I drink every morning.  I like my every-day tea be organic, which is more expensive, but I get it anyway, because as much as I drink of this tea, I think it’s better for my health.  It’s a delicious Earl Grey, with organically grown cornflowers.

We’ll have two kinds of tea in six ounce bags, tucked into the tin ~ OR, if someone just wants one or the other, the teas and the tin will be sold separately.  I’m not really planning to go into the tea business, just these two kinds because they’re my favorites, and for a true lover of tea, I think they would make the perfect gift, either for a friend or for YOU.  (I may not be in the tea business, but I’m definitely in the gift business! 🙂 )

The tins and the tea should be in by the end of September … or is it August?  I forget, we’ll let you know for sure.  My sample Tin is all packed up and ready for the trip! I know I got carried away taking pictures!  It’s actually worse if you’re here, because I take that tin to every room I’m in!  Not used to it yet!  It looks good with the book. 🙂

But to change the subject for a moment, and get us out of the house . . . let’s go up island to the famous old Aquinnah Shop where Joe and I went the other night to watch the sun set . . . past the wonderful rock walls that line the roads . . .

And the beautiful farms overlooking the sea.  It’s been gorgeous these first weeks of August, cool and clear, good sleeping weather, really almost like fall . . .

We left home without a plan, just meandering, and stopped at the Chilmark Church near Beetlebung Corner when we saw the sign out front for their church-made lobster rolls.  We ate them in the car while we drove along.

Lots of people don’t realize how much of the island is just open space . . .

This is the view from our parking space in Aquinnah!

And here’s the view from Joe’s car window…

See where we are?  All the way to the very left side of this map.

We needed to grab hold of as much summer as possible, and this certainly was the night to get some!

A gorgeous sunset.

And now, Girlfriends, we’re almost all caught up … just one more little thing to show you . . .

I told you I’d joined the Beatrix Potter Society, right?  I got an envelope from England the other day . . . You can scroll down in POTTERING ABOUT, and you’ll see they wrote about our book.

We’re now proud card-carrying members and expecting our first Journal and Newsletter in October.  Just one more something to look forward to when we get home.

OK, must go Girlfriends, errands to do today!  Hope you have a terrific day.  I’ve loved every moment of our book writing adventure.  Thank you so much for everything.  Speaking of making dreams come true . . .   XOXO

Ooops, P.S! Rachel, OUR Rachel, sometimes known as Ray, sent this photo of our book actually IN England!!  She also Tweeted this to me today, “Anyone who has lost faith in humanity should RUN to your blog & read the comments.  Amazing women!  Brilliant stuff…xo”

I tweeted back: xo I have known this forever, because of letters I’ve gotten and always had faith because of it. This is the REAL world.

Talk about JOY! Reading A Fine Romance is pure joy. I am reading it a few (5-10) pages at a time so it will last longer and I love being surprised at each new page, each new story. It is a masterpiece, really, a handwritten book with charming illustrations. Every time I open it up, I hold it up to my nose and breathe in the smell of a good book. I am a little obsessed, I admit. Thanks for showing us a picture of the van, I will be on the lookout for you!

  2. Barbara Sturtz says:

I was going to give A Fine Romance to my daughter for Christmas but I couldn’t stand not giving to her now…….we hugged and laughed and hope to see all the wonderful places in our book…..your sunsets are breathtaking!

  3. Lina says:

Susan, I devoured A Fine Romance in two days…I wanted to go slower but I couldn’t stop myself and well, I own that book and can read it again and again! I actually wrote about my excitement on my blog and also mentioned that I was looking for your Autumn book…and my sister-in-law found it and bought it for me! So I’ve been in heaven. I can’t wait to see you on the west coast (Madonna Inn) on November 10th! By the way, you mention your small California farm in Autumn..do you still have it? Still plan to retire there? I’m sorry, many questions!
My husband and I visited Martha’s Vineyard in September of last year and visited Aquinnah…it was so gorgeous and yes, I was surprised by all of the open space on the Island! I took a million pictures of everything. I see why you are so inspired by your surroundings.
Here’s a link to my blog post about A Fine Romance…it’s not a review but I’ll get to that very soon!

I am so looking forward to seeing you. Hope you are coming to Austin or Houston as planned! Me and my Mom got your book and it’s even better than expected! YAY! I also got my 2014 calendars and so happy to hear about the 2015 blotter. I was bummed there was not one for 2014. I have it in a special place in my house and only that blotter works there soooo for 2014 I will have to think of something different for that spot. It will be lonely without your blotter. 🙁 Have a terrific trip!
    Hugs,

Susan! I received the book on Saturday and held off until Sunday to ready because I KNEW it would be special and I wanted to savor the anticipation. I picked it up Sunday morning with the intent of reading a chapter or so and then putting it down to make it last. However, it was so fabulous I couldn’t put it down and finished it in one reading. I’ve always wanted to visit England and it just hasn’t been in the stars to go yet, but your book, that fabulous journal you wrote, it made me feel as if I’d been. Your words made me laugh and even a bit weepy in some spots; you made it so very real for me. And your illustrations and photos – so lovely and perfect. I followed the blog while you were traveling and still the book exceeded my expectations. Thank you for sharing your wonderful trip with us ‘girlfriends’. I’ll visit England one of these days and your wonderful journal will travel with me. I’m planning on attending your book signing in San Luis Obispo and can’t wait to tell you in person how you’ve inspired me in my own life and brought me such joy with your words and art.

  7. Mary Pat says:

Oh, joy! I have my copy, and am forcing myself to read it in small doses so it will last as long as possible! I keep looking at the endpapers and getting lost in them! Thank you and Joe for taking the trip! Thank you for making such a treasure of a book! Thank Joe for supporting you! Thank you for being you. You make ME happy!

  8. Cindy says:

Received your book yesterday and loved it! Couldn’t put it down! So glad to hear you will have the lavender tea! The book is everything I thought it would be!
    Thank you! Thank you!

  9. Terri (in Richmond, VA) says:

Oh Susan, I am so happy for your happiness, and am glad that it has made you even more creative. And we get to benefit from your happiness and creativity. What a wonderful circle. Your book has been a constant joy since I received it! I plan to give it for Christmas gifts. More sales and more love to pass on. Thank you!

    • mari1017 says:

      Terry –
I’m in Norfolk VA – did you happen to contact any bookstores in Richmond about having Susan Branch for a book signing?
We have Prince Books here in Norfolk, but I’m wondering if Richmond is more central for more readers and Susan Branch admirers 🙂

      • Terri (in Richmond, VA) says:

I will see what I can find. I would love for Susan to come here, but was planning to travel a ways to go to a book signing.

        • Margot in Virginia Beach says:

          Hey Teri,
I am so trying to get something in Wmsburg. The English theme is there. LOL Mari told me about Prince Books too. I also tried OBX. They have two privately owned bookstores. I think if we all called the same store it could work. I like The Scotland House in Wmsburg. It is not a bookstore, but it DOES carry books. If we all call the same place maybe they will get the “bug”, and they have said they want a call from the author.

          • sbranch says:

Excellent idea Margot … the more a store hears, the better chances we have! So thank you for your good thoughts!

  10. Debi says:

The tin is darling! I can’t wait to get them. It is adorable. I can think of so many people who would love them as gifts, too. Thanks again for the wonderful book – it’s already a treasure. I’m hoping you come our way for a book signing. I have contacted some bookstores nearby so we’ll see. Guess I should take my copy in and show them what they are missing 🙂 Have a wonderful cross country trip. Travel safely and keep us posted.

  11. Judy Wooley says:

I am about half way finished with your new book and I feel like I am on the trip with you. I have all your books and love them so. Thanks so much for writing them. Judy

  12. Toni says:

Just LOVE the book! From the smell of the fresh pages, to the squeaky sound of the cover – what a treat. Your beautiful photos and lovely paintings – the foxglove on pg 109 – it’s just a treasure. It was wonderful traveling along with you – and now to have this memento. Thank You!

And the quotes -“There is a time to laugh and a time not to laugh. And this is one of them.” Inspector Clouseau Just love it!

  13. Mona in Riverbank CA says:

What a way to spend your summer and fall, traveling cross country with your cute Joe meeting all the girl friends you never met before, talking over the book and making great memories for everyone! And then home for the winter to cozy in with two kitties who will have missed you terribly.

I love my book – it is so special to me. My ancestors are from England, and though I may never get there, you have brought England to me. Right now the book is sitting on my shelf (right next to the Summer book) where I see it every time I walk by.

We love you, Susan! Thank you and thank you and thank you!!! =^..^=

  14. Gina Ortega says:

Susan, I love your blog and love all you write about! But I’m wondering why you and Joe don’t spend the fall in New England and the winter in California?

    • sbranch says:

We have become New England People .. actually Joe has always been one, but I’ve become very attached to the seasons. I miss them when I’m in California.

  15. Lynn Marie says:

Am I the first to comment! Oh my goodness, I feel very privileged. I am sooo enjoying the book. It my book to go off somewhere quiet with, get cozy, and dream of the English countryside. Thank you so much for your vision of taking us along on your trip.

  16. Susan Miller says:

Love Love LOVE “A Fine Romance”…even with no reading, it’s such a treat to just look through the pages and take it all in….I have just started reading it and am just so excited! I hope you are heading down south on your tour as we would love to see you!!!
Thanks again and have a GREAT book tour! 🙂
    Susan

  17. Arlinda says:

I love the beret. After this post I’ll be heading to your store to order one for me, my daughter and husband. He isn’t a beret person but you never know.

My husband, this past weekend, heard me and my 10 year old talk about “A Fine Romance” and the awesome trip you and Joe took us on; that he asked me to read it to him while on a drive to visit my parents. I knew he was loving it because after I read the part about how you and Joe met and all that came after he turned to me and said, “Wow, Joe is one of the good guys.”\

He wouldn’t let me put it down. LOL When we got to my parent’s house he seemed upset because I was only half way into the book. After our visit, as soon as we go into the car, he turned to me and said, “Can you find where we left off?” He surprised me a short time after when he turned towards me and said, “I just realized, I love you reading to me.” (I melted a little) That was sweet.

“A Fine Romance,” IS a magical book, just like it’s stars. Thank you Susan and Joe. XOXO

    PS Love the van!

    • Arlinda says:

I must have that Tea Tin and Tea! Looking forward to it. Hopefully I can preorder it soon!

    • sbranch says:

Obviously one of the good guys. 🙂

      • Arlinda says:

I hope you’re well. I wanted to thank you. I just received a package with my order of “Joe’s Hat”plural. My daughter and I love it. Both of us put them on at the same time, tilting the hat towards the left (beautiful), then towards the back (gorgeous), then covering one ear, titlted towards the opposite side (very chic). LOVVVE it. We’re looking forward to the hat wearing days and night. XOXO

We looking forward to your Tea Tin. We hope it’ll be available soon.

        Thank you Susan.

  18. Paula Gardner says:

I have my book….trying so hard to read it s-l-o-w-l-y…..it is one of the most beautiful books I have ever owned! Thank you!

  19. Bets Kirby says:

Received my copy of A Fine Romance quicker than I expected and have been savoring it – not allowing myself to just read it straight through, but taking time to read quietly, stopping to “just think” for awhile; then put it aside til the next day. It’s lovely – like going on a leisurely trip. We’ve always said a trip starts when you leave the driveway. I’m so glad I ordered this “trip.” ! ! ! ! !

  20. Patricia says:

    Hello Susan and Joe,
Happy trails to you! Nothing quite like a road trip! Sounds like another book idea, this time in the good ol’ USA. No, just kidding! But you have done such a beautiful job! I am savoring A Fine Romance. And the two teas with tins! Oh my, I have to have them! Earl Grey a la “Susan Branch”? Yum, yum!
Be safe out there in the big, wide world.
    Blessings to you

  21. Doreen Strain (Florida) says:

Susan, I love the tea tin! I’m going to add it to my Christmas list!!! (If I can wait that long for it! You know how it is!) The pictures you took out on your day trip up island are beautiful. I’m like you, we moved down here to Florida, and I’m so missing New England. Six more years til retirement and then we are going to buy a homestead up near the VT/MA/NY border. I just can’t wait! Until then…I’ll have to settle for a few trips up north to our log cabin in Chatham, NY. We’re planning a trip this fall to see the leaves. Nothing like New England in the Fall! Safe trip, make sure you have a warm sweater and take lots of pictures along the way to show us! FOSB 4~ Ever! ~ Doreen ~

  22. Lael Michele says:

Wonderful, wonderful wonderful! I am in love with your book….so far! I dont want it to end, so I only allow myself to read a handful of pages before bed each night in order to savor it’s sweetness! It is just as lovely as can be. Im looking forward to your book signings and anxious to see what locations will show up next! If you dont end up closer to Seattle, I am planning to make a trip to visit family in San Diego, and drive my bum up to San Luis Obispo to meet you there in November! Either way, I am coming! 🙂 Thank you for your hard work Susan, not a one of us take any of it for granted!

  23. Cindy Maulin says:

hi susan!!!!!! oh my gosh!!! what a thrill these last two weeks have been with everyone receiving their copy/copies of ” A Fine Romance”, reading them all together…AND…then getting to read everyone’s comments here on the Girlfriend blog…. I KNOW and can feel your excitement and gratitude….what a special time for so many reasons….. and now…MORE!!!!! The tea tin is absolutely darling and I bet the tea that’s inside is delicious…it’s SB approved!!! Can’t wait to get my hands on that…and what a sweet holiday gift it will be….. I was so happy to see the pictures of Aquinnah….we made that same trip in July and just loved seeing that part of the Island…. so serene and beautiful…..as we were standing on the look-out taking pictures of the Gay Head Lighthouse, a gentleman informed us of a “little known fact”…he told us that around the curve on the backside of the lighthouse below the cliff and out of sight, that that area is reserved and used as a “nude beach”!!!!!!! Now, we are not sure if just himself knows about this or is this public knowledge or what!!!! What a hoot!!! Loved our trip there……. Also, I wanted to remind you that I am still in contact with “Main Street Books” in St. Charles, MO which is right next to St. Louis, MO; a popular and charming shopping area with historic buildings housing shops and restaurants concerning a signing there. The owner has been out of town, so contact has been a little slow….not giving up…. we are missing MV…..the best lobster roll we had while on the Island came from Grace Episcopal Church in VH, so I am seeing that this must be an Island thing….sooooo gooood……(not to mention the pie!!)…. have a wonderful week-end susan and joe.. xo love, cindy
ps…Joe… you were born to wear that hat!!!! c’est merveilleux!!!! 🙂

    • TJ in VA says:

      Hi Cindy,

I think it is common knowledge regarding the nude beach at Gayhead. Your comment reminded me of a funny incident we experienced years ago on my first visit to MV with girlfriends, my cousin, and her 14 year daughter. On the way to Gayhead, we stopped at a country store for sandwiches, fruit, and drinks. There were other families also making purchases for their beach picnics. My cousin was excited about the therapeutic mud at the beach, but we never expected anything but a family day at the beach. So we finally arrive, park along the side of the road, and walk over the sand dunes trailing other families. We did a double-take when we noticed the first nude man…he was crouched in a position that reminded me of the “The Thinker” sculpture. We also noticed that there were more and more nude people further down the beach toward the mud bath area. Well, we decided to stay put near the section of beach where people were clothed in bathing suits. Later in the day, my cousin and a few other friends walked to the mud bath area…cousin was wearing a beautiful pink suit that was never recovered from that adventure. Most memorial and hilarious was watching a mid-aged couple arrive on their boat, both of them dived naked into the water, swam to the beach, and walked toward the mud bath…much later, they returned covered in mud to find that their boat had almost floated onto the beach…so funny watching them and another nude guy trying to get the boat afloat. The good news is that they succeeded. After witnessing this escapade, it was time to end our day at the beach…cousin suggested to her daughter that she might not want to share this adventure with her dad.

      • sbranch says:

Ahhh the 70’s — the island was quite the enclave for free-spirits — when Aquinnah was called Gay Head because of the gaily colored cliffs — I wasn’t sure if it was still nude up there, but I wouldn’t be a bit surprised.

        • Cindy Maulin says:

That’s a great story TJ!! We weren’t really sure what to make of the gentleman’s claim, but we all were leaning towards the side that he was telling the truth…and this confirms it!!! He didn’t make mention of the Martha’s Vineyard magical mud however!! 🙂
so funny!!! We loved our trip there and Susan, you captured that gorgeous sunset perfectly…..just beautiful…. xo love, cindy

  24. Janie Phillips says:

I barely finished breathing a sigh of contentment after the arrival of A Fine Romance and already you have me hardly able to wait for this darling Tea Tin and the tea to go with it! The anticipation will make it all the sweeter, but I really hope it’s due in at the end of August rather than September because I want it quite a LOT! It’s the cutest thing ever (with the possible exception of your beret model ;)).

I have a feeling that you’re just getting started with all the nice things you’ll be hearing about A Fine Romance. It surprised me a little bit to hear that you weren’t sure how it would be received, because I never doubted you for a minute, but I can understand that you didn’t KNOW until you knew. I love that you gave the world the wonderful gift of this book and that the world is giving you a gift in return. I hope it just gets better and better as you go on your book tour and I’m pretty sure it will. I can’t imagine what it would be like to meet so many adoring girlfriends, but it seems like it would take a lot of energy, so eat your Wheaties and get your rest. I don’t want us to overwhelm you (although we’re the ones who may be hyperventilating :)).

    Love you,
    Janie
    xoxo

    • sbranch says:

It’s the tears in my eyes I don’t know what to do with! That’s the real problem! I’m just so touched! xoxo Thank you Janie!

  25. barbara miller says:

I thought I lost you! I went on and puff you had disappeared. not sure what happened…but I am glad to reconnect! I was with a friend two weeks ago and she bought me the grandma memory book and I sat and wrote and wrote.it came so easy to just answer your questions. I found two of your notebooks [journals?] in a thrift store and gave them to my friend and her daughter and they were happy. I am saving my $ to buy your latest! thank you for your blogs!

    • sbranch says:

You are welcome. And answering those questions is going to make your future family so very happy!

  26. Barbara in NC says:

Hi Susan…I tried to only read a few pages a day of your wonderful book so it would last longer, but I have no self-control! I just got swept into the trip again and couldn’t put it down.
It’s such a special book with all of your quotes, pictures and illustrations…it is a real love letter to England and I’m sure it will be so well received there, too!! You should be so proud..
(I think Miss Potter would love it, too!). I hope you get to North Carolina but if you don’t, I hope your tour is a blast. Have lots of fun…love the van! P.S. I just have to ask, what do you and Joe think of that reality show “The Vineyard”?

    • Margot in Virginia Beach says:

      Barbara,
Where are you in NC? I am in Virginia Beach. I am trying to set up a signing at Island Books on the OBX.
      Margot

      • mari1017 says:

        Margot –
I just replied to Terri in Richmond about a Virginia area book signing. I’m in Norfolk – we have Prince Books, but I’m wondering if we all consolidated our requests to one bookstore, we might have more success in bringing Susan to Virginia and our area.
        mari

        • Margot in Virginia Beach says:

          Hi Mari~
I wasn’t sure if you girls saw what I was up to. I think I mentioned Wmsburg to Teri on this blog. I haven’t had much luck. Is Prince Books a NEW bookstore? We have nothing here in VB, but B&N. The B&N in Wmsburg told me that they need permission from the corporate office unless it is an author from VA. Plus, they were worried about returning extra books if they couldn’t sell them. I also called two bookstores on the OBX, but the one would only do the signing during the tourist season. My last name is Birkett and we are in the book. Coffee???

  27. Barb says:

This is so simple but to state the obvious – We LOVE Susan Branch (& Joe and the kitties, too!)

Thank you a millions times and more for your wonderful joy of living and sharing it with us. You inspire me to live a happy, joyful life every single day.

    XOXOXO

  28. Linda in Texas says:

Susan, A Fine Romance was waiting for me when we got back from vacation. What a treat and a perfect ending to a fun vacation. I love the book! I’m going s-l-o-o-o-w because I want to savor every part of it. Thanks for all you put into making it reality.

And I love the van all decorated for the book tour. Tell Joe his eyes will stick that way and he won’t be able to drive. 😉

I hope you have a wonderful book tour, unfortunately, you won’t be near me, but I wish you the best. At the end of the month, I will be going on vacation to Mackinac Island and plan on having lunch at the Grand Hotel. I will bring along “A Fine Romance” and re-read it when I am there.

  33. Debbie HAVILAND says:

    Hello Susan,
After spending two weeks in Florence Italy and another week in
Vermont, I came home to discover that your much anticipated book,
A Fine Romance, had arrived at my door step.

I could hardly wait to open it.
I loved every single page and felt like I was back in Europe again.
This time in charming, delightful England.
Thank you so much for creating this treasure of a book!!!

I know I will find myself reading your delightful stories over and over again
While I enjoy your charming paintings and lovely photos.

Wishing you all the best as you travel around the country
With Joe, promoting your new book.

  34. Another Susan says:

A few moments ago, I heard someone deliver something to my porch. I checked–a small package from Amazon. Contents? A Fine Romance. Yay!! Time to put the kettle on and sit with a cuppa while I begin reading. It looks beautiful! Thank you, Susan!

    • sbranch says:

Did you really get that from Amazon? Because my publisher has not sold the books to them yet. So it makes me wonder!

      • Another Susan says:

Yep. I’d ordered it back on July 14th and they said it would ship once they had it in hand. I got an e-mail on Tuesday saying it had been shipped, and I received it today.

        • sbranch says:

Wow. We have not sold them to them. So that’s extremely weird. I wonder where they’re getting them! Kind of shocking. But I’m sure there’s a good explanation!

          • Anna Marie says:

I thought it was odd too. I was notified by both you and Amazon that the book would arrive. It was shiped thru Amazon. Oh well, as long as we got it!

          • sbranch says:

Do you remember who you ordered it from? Because, honestly, we haven’t sent any books to Amazon, so it’s a curious thing how they could send it to you.

          • Elaine in Toronto says:

Maybe check for your signature? Might be a clue.

      • CarolK (The Garden State) says:

I was on Amazon the other day looking for books about B. Potter and your book IS there! I’m glad you suggested all that reading material on BP. So far every one I want to read I’m borrowing from our local library. Susan, I’m so excited for you and thinking how wonderful its going to be for you to meet all your adoring fans. I’ll be one of them if you come to a book store near me. Happy Trails to youuuuuuuu………

  35. Susan, I was excited to receive your book, and loved the signed sticker in the front! Actually, I loved the front, the back, the inside and everything in between. Reading this book, after following you through the beginning on your blog last year, till you pulled back in past the Statue of Liberty, was a warm and happy experience. I loved all you wrote about nature and “handmade” countries, and keeping the home arts alive. The visit to Beatrix Potter’s Hilltop with your illicit romp in the rose bushes to pick a lovely bloom was very emotional. Your experience mirrors, I know, how I would feel there.
The food, the teas, your friends, the castles and gardens, the hilarious (to your readers, maybe not you and Joe)driving adventures…I just can’t even say enough about how cozy, beautiful, sweet, funny, charming this book, this precious diary, is to me. Your art, quotes, poems and thoughts definitely make me realize that you and me and all the blog girls are kindred spirits!
Thank you, Susan. Thank you, Joe! I will treasure this book always. Hugs from Robin Larkspur!!

  36. Susan ( an Ohio gal in SoCal ) says:

Susan, I’m so glad you are enjoying all of the comments. You certainly deserve them for the beautiful book you have given us! Enjoy, enjoy – may your tea cup run over! After I read this blog entry, I hopped on over to Amazon to give a review of the book, and wow! It’s sold out already! I do hope to be able to be at San Luis Obispo, but it’s not for certain. I’ve introduced an Ohio friend to your works and she has put the Learned Owl visit on her calendar. There’s always room for another girlfriend!

  37. Kathy says:

Oh my, I guess you have helped me post my first comment ever!! Yes I am the lucky Kathy that got to read this wonderful book at the same place our author was for inspiration. I enjoyed every minute. Thanks for your talent and inspiration. Hmmm posting is fun. BTW- I will be seeing you at your NH book signing. Can’t wait.

    • sbranch says:

Good girl Kathy, I was hoping that would pull you into the fray! Thank you for the beautiful photograph! You’re coming to New Hampshire! How wonderful! xoxo

  38. ReNae says:

I am so so happy for you!!!! Happy for us too that you did this book!!! I just keep picking it up and looking thru it….Beautiful!! I love the tea tin!!!! Oh my gosh!!! I want to pre order the tin!! You add so much charm and delight to our lives…delight don’t use that word much but that is what came to my mind…and oh yes can’t wait for your tea!!! Have a wonderful time on the road…safe travels…..

  39. Barbara Hansen says:

I am thrilled to tell you I’m enjoying the book so much! We didn’t get to take a vacation this summer so in a way I still am, with you as my tour guide. Hoping your book tour goes well. You probably won’t be any where near Omaha, NE… as you cross the country enjoy yourself. Thanks again, Barbara

  40. Heartsdesire says:

I am soooo looking forward to our book. I just received an email yesterday that it is on its way. Oh boy, I’m so excited. Love that sweet tin, thanks for designing something so cute. I’m hoping it arrives in your lovely store later this month. I don’t have the handsome stove that you do, but I do have a lovely place in mind for it. And the tea, I will definitely be ordering some. At 4 p.m., I’m usually watching the Young & Restless ( an old habit of mine) and 4 o’clock tea is a must have (with a “biscuit”of course).

  41. I can’t wait to purchase your new book, Susan, when it becomes available from Amazon, as I was given an Amazon.com gift certificate for my “new decade” birthday! I know I’ll love it–I’ve loved reading about your trip to England on your blog and all about the book as you made it. You are so talented and productive –I wish I could do half as much as you do! I love the French beret your Joe is modeling and the new tea canister is absolutely adorable! I am intrigued to try a rose and lavender tea as they are my favorite flower/herb and the tea must smell as delicious as it tastes!

One of my fondest memories is of my husband and I driving all around Matha’s Vineyard years ago, and your photos brought those memories back. The island was bigger than we thought! It took us all day to make the drive form Oak Bluffs.

Happy, happy days ahead and continued success with A Fine Romance!

    Hugs,

    Pat

  42. Lorraine says:

Well, I’m re-reading A Fine Romance… I couldn’t stop myself from devouring it the first time (and it was easy to do) – so now, I’m taking it along with me everywhere I know I’ll have time to read a few pages and savoring it. It is truly a delightful book. My husband’s family is from England and we’ve been there – but there is so much more to see (sad to say I have never been to the Lake District. Not sure how that happened…). This book makes me smile – and sigh a happy, contented sigh. (Ahhhhhhh…..) And the book is even better with a good cuppa tea. Life is good.

So you can imagine how happy I was to see that you chose my favorite drawing of yours to put on a tea tin. My oh my, what a wonderful day… I am quite certain that one will not be enough. And I was thrilled to see it on the cover of the 2015 calendar. Woo hoo!

Still hopeful you will be somewhere near or in Chicago (love the van, by the way – too fun). I keep checking the events section. Fingers crossed.

Thank you for the wonderful blog.

  43. Penny Harrison says:

“Fine Romance” leaves me awestruck! I have not finished reading it yet, but to see all the attention and love put into hand writing every page – you have inspired me to go get some handwriting practice books and improve on my own! And now MORE good news – I love tea tins and have a couple from England! And I love tea! CANNOT WAIT til they are in stock in your store – will make great gifts, too! Thank you for all that you share of yourself!
    Penny

  44. Marilyn (Ohio) says:

Me again, Susan, reiterating my email about how much I enjoyed A Fine Romance. In fact, I think my brain is still in the book! Can’t get it out & don’t want to 🙂
I’m going to have a cup of tea now, but just PLAIN old Earl Gray (Grey?) !

    • sbranch says:

Grey, as in Lord, as in this interesting history. Thank you Marilyn, I’m staying in too!

      • Marilyn (Ohio) says:

Thanks, Susan, for the link – interesting. I actually drink coffee in the morning, but sometimes later in the day, a cup of Earl Grey seems more appropriate. I’m going to look for a Lavender Earl Grey.
        Wishing you safe, successful travel….

  45. Janice Nelson says:

Well, we just returned yesterday from 2 weeks in Paris. I was so sad to have left that beautiful place. But, to my surprise, when we picked up our big sack of mail, there was my book! A Fine Romance. I was so thrilled. And I love it. It made me so happy. Thank you Susan Branch. You add sunshine to my life.

  46. Lynn Hamilton says:

hi Susan, chuckling because my name is Lynn Marie also and I see you’ve already received a post from Lynn Marie 🙂 I received the two copies of your wonderful book I ordered from you online store; I love every bit of it!!! Am still deciding who will receive the second copy. My husband and I cruise as much as we can and sailing on one of the Cunard ships is definitely in our future! I love your book; the illustrations, comments, tourist information, recipes…….you really, really worked hard on this book and I enjoyed reading about the ‘making’ of it as well on your blog. And I LOVE Petey….I need to find him to travel with us on our next trip!!! Thank you from the bottom of my heart for sharing your adventure with all of us!!! Enjoy the book signings and safe travels~~~No matter where you travel, there will always be an England!

    Lynn Marie Hamilton,
    Rochester, NY

  47. Kristin in Burlington, Washington says:

A thousand thanks for your beautiful book, for sharing your adventures with all of us! I received your book in the mail on a very special day, the first morning I heard geese fly over. Of course, I now mark this date on my Susan Branch calendar every year. I savored every page, forcing myself to put it down so it would last longer (only 3 days). I know from experience that like every Susan Branch book, it will be a pleasure to read again and again. You are a blessing and a joy (Joe, too!), and I can hardly wait to take my dream trip to England someday.

  48. Carol C says:

The van IS adorable. What a great time you’ll have touring the USA in it. Hope you make it to TN (or somewhere close!). Now the tea! I have a tin from Tasha Tudor’s tea that I keep tea bags in and now I’ll have yours. Jim just finished building me a buttery in the basement and the tins will be wonderful on the shelf! So glad you came up with that idea! Loved every minute of AFR and am ready to reread. Life is so good and you help make it that way. Thanks!! 😀

  49. Ruth Thomas says:

THE BOOK………THE BOOK IS FANTABULOUS! I am almost done reading it, but will read it again just so I don’t miss anything. I’m so hoping you get near Indianapolis for a book signing. As for the tea tin, how wonderful. You just needed to make some tea cups like the ones on the tin to go with it! But, the book is just like everything you do – meticulous, creative, inspiring, brings the reader right along with you; your artwork is glorious. There isn’t much more to share except start ideas for the next one! I’m so glad I pre ordered mine and we got them EARLY. Love it! Thank you a million times over.

  50. Diane from Poulsbo says:

Dear Susan, I have finished the entire book and am still carrying it around with me. It is such a wonderful keepsake! I love the newly decorated van for travel! All it needed …in my humble opinion…was a picture of Joe with his black beret …but then I scrolled down a bit further to see that Joe’s berets are now for sale! LOVE it! I am in love with the brand new tea tin and plan on buying a couple as soon as they arrive. They are simply perfect for tea all year long, and I know my daughter will want one for her tea in her college apartment too! there is so much I could write…and usually do..lol…but I will end it here and just say how happy I am for you! Congratulations again and xoxoxo! 🙂

  51. shirley burt says:

    Susan,
Home from the doctor’s office, and so excited after reading part of the most perfect book. Thank you, Thank you. The beginning was so beautiful—-filled with your new Life. Knowing how you and Joe met and fell in love——-so very lovely. This blog filled with all things wonderful. Will be ordering the tea and tin.
Keep creating. We are so lucky to know you.
    Love and bunny hugs,
    Shirley

  52. Phyllis Blair says:

Your book is beautiful! Thank you for all you do to make life just a little brighter.

  53. Kathleen Forde says:

Well done Susan… what a beautiful book filled with so much love for all you were experiencing. I was overjoyed, to say the least, when my books arrived! And the clever way you signed them – I love that! I am giving my other book to my best friend who travels to England all the time and i just know she’ll love it! The book is WAY more than I ever expected, every little word and drawing are just so precise and so precious. Congratulations to you for bringing your dream to fruition and blessing us with the results!
Can’t wait to order your new tea and tin too : )

  54. Brenda says:

Oh I sure hope that I do not have anything else I need to do on September 7th! You will be at the Grand Rapids, MI bookstore and that is less than a hour away from where I live. Crossing my fingers that I can go and meet you! Cannot wait to get a copy of the book. I read all the installments of your trip and would love to live it again through your book. My computer has been very crappy the last few months so I have not visited and commented as much of late. But I am getting some blogging time in on my hubs computer tonight and decided to spend some time with you. The music was wonderful! Thank you!

  55. Pam G says:

I ADORE the book, Susan. It is so wonderful and so much fun-I read a bit every day to make it last….and last….
Love the tea tin and the lavender tea sounds nice, esp. for a winter brew (or a gift).
Your van is great. I only wish I would see it tooling through the Finger Lakes aka Little Switzerland aka The Tuscany of the USA. I just don’t know any nice bookstores around us….sigh…..
    Back to my book now

  56. Victoria Robertson says:

Have sitting in my closet 16 copies of A FINE ROMANCE to give to special ones at Christmas! I devoured my copy and literally wept as it ended But O JOY, all I need do is open it again in the snowy days of winter! THANKYOU

It really is a work of art and it’s obvious how much of your heart you put into it. I look forward to every page with anticipation! Thank you so very much! Tracy xo

We are all so blessed for you to share your life with us!

  61. Dear Susan,

Someone here commented on your previous post and kindly gave a link to the Morgan Library and Museum showing Beatrix Potter’s picture letters that she wrote, complete with illustrations. How we love them, they are delightful! How thrilled the recipients of such letters must have been!

Reading your book “A Fine Romance” is like receiving a personal handwritten picture letter from you… and how fortunate we are to be able to savor it and the Englishness of it all! Your photographs and illustrations are lovely!

England is very dear to us, too! It is where so many of our ancestors lived.

We love Beatrix Potter and celebrated Beatrix’s birthday, as well!

Best wishes on your “A Fine Romance” Book Tour!

Thank you for writing such a splendid book, a keepsake of all your English travels!

Diane and daughter Sarah from the Corgyncombe Courant

  62. Tanya Wingate says:

Brenda, I live in Trufant an hour northeast of G.R., where do you live?

    • Brenda says:

Tanya, you will not believe how close we live. I flea market in Trufant. 🙂 I just live north of Howard City.

      • Brenda says:

Tanya, When I said I flea market in Trufant, I ment I go to the flea market in Trufant when I have time on my Thursdays off not a seller. Thought I would make that comment clearer. Love to buy flowers there for my gardens. Will you be going to the book signing, maybe we will meet there.

  63. Yvonne Shafer says:

All I can say is, I LOVE IT! I read A Fine Romance in one day and then went back to savor it by taking a few days to absorb what I read! I think you managed to capture the soul of the countryside and the people there. I love your whimsy and fun outlook on adventures. I’m a long-time, since day one SB fan and look forward to whatever comes next!

  64. Frances Fowler says:

I cannot wait for either tea or the book — I’ll take both together, please!

  65. Cyndi in NC says:

As always I loved reading the blog and going to the various links. As a tea lover I’ll have to try you tea, I have a cup of green tea as I write. I’m in Arizona visiting my husband who is temporarily working here. The pictures of your island are beautiful. It’s always nice to see your world. *S* I’m hoping to see the meteors on the 11th to the 13th as it should be clear and bright here in the desert. I must admit sunrise and sunset are striking here as well. I always enjoy my visits here but will happy to get home also. Again as always the blog is a high point of my day. *S* Hugs to all the girlfriends, the kitties and of course one for Joe who looks marvelous in his beret!

  66. Vickie in Olympia says:

I finished a Fine Romance yesterday while sitting on a rickety wooden chair in a shady spot out on the lawn. It was the perfect way to end it. But as I said many months ago, “When will the next adventure be out?” We are insatiable girlfriends. Your writing inspires, delights and leaves one with great contentment. Thank you so much for opening my eyes to a new way of life of looking at small things with great appreciation. I find myself thinking of something you have written, drawn or baked nearly everyday. You are a wonderful mentor! I think I will go reread a chapter or two.

Love and “sparkles” Mary

  69. Karen Carpenter says:

    Hi Susan,

I received your new book in the mail last Friday, the day all my children arrived for a big family fun vacation. We spent 4 days having fun together here and then off to Mackinac Island and I took the book with me! I love it! I shall treasure everymoment reading it. What a spectacular job you did, I feel like I am there with you. Congrats!

    Hugs, Karen

  70. Margot in Virginia Beach says:

This is all so exciting!!! The tea sounds lovely! A hike with a hat and a cup of tea upon return. Is that hotel refered to as “Castle in the Clouds”. My son and I were hiking up to Mt. Washington one summer and he turned back 1.7 miles from the top!!

    • CarolK (The Garden State) says:

Margot, Castle in the Clouds is totally a different place. You must visit it some time. It’s the neatest house high up on a mountain overlooking Lake Winnie and a few other lakes below.

      • Margot in Virginia Beach says:

        Hi Carol K.,
Thanks for the info.! I live in VA now, but I was hoping to climb Mt. Washington in September as my hubby was supposed to go to Boston with his ship. He gets a suite while the ship is in dry dock. However, the schedule has changed, again.
        Where are you in NJ?
        Margot

  71. Kathie Ferko says:

    Hi

I am loving the new book…all the pictures and drawings are lovely..Then there are the tales…it is so wonderful. Just another of your books to add to my bookshelf…. all lovely keepsakes! The tea tin is sooooo cute Another thing I must have…and what cute presents they will make for tea loving girlfriends.

What are the dimensions of the tin? It was hard to tell from the photo.
Are you coming to Pa for any book signings? I can hope!
    Bye for now,
    Kathie from Limerick, Pa

  72. Christine says:

I LOVE the painting of the island! Is it in one of your books, or for sale somewhere? My sister is one of the island’s esteemed physicians, and I would love to have your map framed for my mom. She’s almost as much of a MV fan as you are 😉 I commented a couple of months ago about your awesome MV plate, and so far I haven’t found one, but I am hopeful that I will. My sister lives on the island and she’s not at all sentimental about it, but Mom & I…. well we want anything and everything with MV written on it so we can be surrounded with things that remind us of our visits there.

I can’t wait until September (my birthday) as I’ve hinted heavily to anyone who will listen that you have a new book out. Can’t wait to read it – it sounds lovely!

    • sbranch says:

I wonder if I know your sister Christine? Say Hi to your mom for me too!

      • Christine says:

I told my sister (Beth) that she should try to meet you – she thinks I’m crazy and that the famous people on the island don’t want their fans hounding them…. so you haven’t met her yet. Hopefully you won’t meet her at work, since that would mean you were at the hospital- but maybe one of these days you’ll run into her at Chilmark Chocolates (our favorite store!)

  73. Jane S. says:

Hi Susan, I just finished reading my copy of A Fine Romance…I loved it so much I read it as slowly as possible, stretching it out over 3 days. Some of the places you visited were places I’d been as well, and it reminded me all over again of how wonderful my own holidays were. You’re so lucky that you had a week on board ship to adjust to leaving England and being home again. I flew, so leaving was traumatic! I went into the bathroom on the airplane and cried 3 different times!

Earl Grey is my favorite tea so I’ll be eagerly awaiting the arrival of the tea & tin in your shop.

    Cheers,
    Jane S.

  74. Lee Rose says:

I finished “A Fine Romance” and just loved it. It is so nice, in this world of cynicism and sarcasm, to read a book that is enthusiastic, sentimental, and shares a true love.

I laughed out loud picturing you trying to pick those flowers without getting caught, and got teary eyed at your description of the wonderful people of England.

If Virginia is one of your stops on your tour I will be there with my badge on.
Oh and I LOVE the picture of the book in England. Brilliant!

  75. Cathy from Golden, CO says:

Oh my goodness! I received my box of 3 books today! YAY! I am so very happy AND I have two unsuspecting friends who will be ecstatic! I have only just begin perusing your book but I must say it’s beautiful and looks fabulous! What a treat – I can hardly wait to begin!!!!!!

    • Cathy from Golden, CO says:

YES! – I FORGOT TO SAY I LOVE YOUR TIN! IT AND THE TEA WILL MAKE GREAT CHRISTMAS GIFTS!!!! THANK YOU FOR THAT ALSO!

  76. Joan McCusker says:

What a “Grand” Post! The photos of the MV Sunset…how glorious. I keep reading the events section, any chance of a Book Signing in Northern California? Hoping to see a familiar locale or name I know…? Maybe I’ll have to try for SLO…thank you, as always, Susan.

I want a Tea Tin too. Can’t wait. Thank you for the journey.

  78. Georgie says:

Oh Susan! I had a response sent this afternoon from work… maybe they blocked it (sigh) I probably can’t re-create it 🙁 I so wanted you to see it.

I do want to let you know along with all of the girlfriends just how much YOU are appreciated! Your circle of Girlfriends has exploded!!! ENJOY and as Janie said, eat your Wheaties and take care of yourself.

In one week my dear copy of A Fine Romance will have met you…in person!
    Can’t wait!

When I received my book, I slowly opened the package with such anticipation !
Opening the first few pages, I saw that you had signed it which brought a smile to my face.. Susan, you have written, illustrated, and captured the very essence of
the English countryside and all its charm. I am saving it for a quiet, lazy weekend
day to begin my journey through England again. It is a real winner in all aspects!
Thumbing through the book, I was overwhelmed by your labor of love…details are
marvelous, illustrations breathtaking, and that perfect handwriting! A true work of art! Thank you, Susan, for making this little gem!!
    Love, love your book!
    Linda

  81. sbranch says:

Hi Girlfriends! I have a problem. I have almost 200 comments on here that are waiting for me to “approve” them. I keep reading them and reading them, but I will never get through them if I comment, yet they are so wonderful, I WANT to, so what I end up doing is reading them and not commenting and not approving them either, because I think that later I might be able to comment. OK, you see the dilemma. So from this moment on, until I get these approved, I’m not going to comment, just going to read, and hope you understand that I could only say thank you a hundred times because that’s what I have in my heart. xoxo Thank you so much!

    • KarenP (Wisconsin) says:

You are such a darling dollface! Most bloggers that I follow NEVER respond to a single one of their followers’ comments! And you try to comment on almost every one of your thousands! Don’t know how you can keep it up!? xo…..Karen P.

      • sbranch says:

It’s the most difficult part of blogging, when the comments come in too fast for commenting. But it never stops me from reading!

  82. Pat from Long Island says:

Hi I hope I’m sending this to the right place.. I have not received my Willard for the past two months. I re-submitted my email but I was hoping to receive the July Willard. Any chance? I do enjoy reading it. Thank you so much, I know you’re very busy, I hope I’m not asking too much. Thanks again.

  83. maybaby says:

Oh Susan, my very dear friend passed away unexpectedly on Monday evening, and coming home at night to your book, after helping the family with anything I can, has been my respite and my calm. I had already read it, but now I find myself drawn in to it’s pages again each night. It is like a comforting hug to me, from a friend. Thank you again, so very much, for writing such a beautiful book and sharing your life with us. I so hope you come in that ADORABLE van to Minnesota.

  84. Pat Beckman says:

Love the tea tin…have been asking and there it is..soo many neat things on the web store…my hubby is going to have a hissy, ” do you have to buy every thing She sells”.he so good to me , hauled us all the way to MV last fall and walked up and down your street…he said I’d get arrested for stalking…I said they wouldn’t dare arrest a 75 year old gray haired grandmother…he warned me not to push my luck..I have been a fan forever.
Hope to get to Wilmington Ohio.
    Thanks
    Pat…ohio

  85. Patty in Michigan says:

Susan, All is well again with a new post from you….and a great one too. Joe is too cute with the hat; love the van; and the tea tin. I have to get that when it’s available. Already thinking how cute it will look on the kitchen counter. It will make me happy just to look at it. What a blessing you are! Many blessings to you and Joe on the road.

  86. Winnie Nielsen says:

It all just keeps getting better and better!! Your wonderful book and now the teas and tin? This is going to be so awesome! What a perfect addition to all things British. Susan’s Lavender and Rose tea in an adorable tin to enjoy while re-reading the book for the 10th time?? Thank-you , thank-you for yet one more exciting offer to look forward too. Best of luck in your upcoming tours. Love that van and your Joe in his beret! I’ll be watching the events list in hopes you get somewhere close to me!!

  87. Carole Beth says:

I love love love your book. Such an easy read and all the illustrations were wonderful. Thanks for all the pictures. I am a photo-taking traveler myself and adore pictures. My dream trip is Great Britain and one day that dream will come true. I received the book on my birthday (8-1), starting reading it at lunch and had to finish it that night in bed. I think I had a smile the whole time I was reading. Such a lovely book. I sure hope you get close to Nashville for your book signing, but if I must, I will travel to get to the closest one.

I am cannot wait until your tea tin and tea are ready for ordering. Thanks for always giving us something to look forward to and keeping in touch with your girlfriends. Your girlfriends appreciate it!!!!

Susan, bless you and Joe on your upcoming book signing trip. Safe travels …

  88. joann says:

    Dearest Susan,

I was so sad when others started to receive their book and I had to wait a bit longer, but it was oh so worth it. I bought two of them: one for me and one for my daughter (the bride-to-be) since she’s having Fine Romance of her own right now. At 32, as you know, she has found ‘the one,’ and he truly is! On August 24, while you’re signing your books, I’ll be walking her into the backyard of her new home to be and into the gardens that we’ve been working on all summer….. to the arms of her future husband-to-be.

My own sweetheart will be the officiant, and her two sisters, along with 3 close friends, will be her bridesmaids. It’s a day blessed by God and we’re making lots of delicious foods (ourselves, I might add) for the event.

Anyway, last night, after she got off from work, she stopped by my house where I fixed her some spaghetti squash straight from her own garden. A side of pickled beets, some hot tea and a couple of cookies….and then handed her the wrapped book that had arrived in my mail yesterday. I had opened mine, but waited for her to open hers before I did too much reading. My daughter quickly settled into the sofa, snuggled under a blankie and began to read aloud.

I was mesmerized….like a child getting a bedtime story, my own daughter was reading my the first chapter of your book. We both stopped and gasped….and she showed me pictures you had drawn as you came to various parts in the story….and Joe’s little interjections about his perspective….

Again, we have so much in common…..finding true love the second time around, having a huge heartbreak, thinking that maybe, just maybe, I would not find a sweet man…..and starting anew, re-inventing myself…or I SHOULD say, allowing ME to come out and be just who I am all along……

She and I will treasure your book and we’ll read it again and again. We’ll quote it, laugh about it, and it will bring us to tears sometimes, too. My daughter said to me, “Susan could be your sister Mom; she really could.”

So Aunt Susan to my daughters…………may you be blessed with the strength, energy, talent, and love to keep writing and creating…….for we are all blessed by your gift.

I have talked to Old Firehouse Bookstore and to the Tattered Cover. I know for a fact that the Old Firehouse Bookstore has sent in a request for your presence. I can’t build the bed and breakfast fast enough. But you, my sister of the soul, are a huge part of it. You’ve been a part of my life for well more than twenty-five years……it’s been a journey for sure!! Thank you for holding my hand along the way; sometimes the road was really rough. We’re tough cookies we are……….. but soft on the inside.

Love you Susan!!! Congratulations on a wonderful book………..you delivered your best yet!!

    xoxo
    Joann

After my comment I thought I will just check to see where Susan and Joe will be going on the book tour. Not even thinkin that you would be any where near Michigan. Then there it was “Grand Rapids”!!!!!! Did a happy dance. So it looks like we are going to meet. I will see you on September 7th with book in hand and a hug! Yeah!!!!! – Patty in Michigan

    • sbranch says:

I just realized I have the address wrong, we will be at the Alpine Ave location! See you there Patty!

  90. Lorrie says:

Yesterday I received a nice email from your people in California telling me my copy of A Fine Romance had been shipped. “Oh, goody,” thought I, “it should be here in a couple of weeks.”
What delight when, this morning, whilst painting my front door, the postman dropped off a package in my mailbox. I saw the return address and thought, “can’t be.” But it was! Your wonderful book arrived in Canada, land of tardy postal service! Hooray, hooraw! I paged through it quickly, but the sun was shining and the doors needed painting, so I’m saving it for when I can sit down with a cup of tea and really savor the experience.
    Thank you from Canada.

    • sbranch says:

“Land of tardy postal service” ! 🙂 It’s in Canada! Thank you Lorrie!

      • Elaine in Toronto says:

Hi Lorrie, what part of Canada are you from? My books also came the day after I received the email that they had been shipped. So surprised and happy. Now for some serious reading. Let’s work together to convince Susan and Joe to come to Canada for a book signing.

  91. Debby Suovanen says:

Oh, your island is so beautiful, it makes be want to travel there to see it in person. I’m originally from San Diego, California and living in Oregon now and I understand what you said to one other commenter about enjoying the seasons. That is one reason I love it in Oregon – each season is different. Although sometimes in the winter when my daughter tells me about going to the beach and I’m enduring temperatures in the low 40’s, well….it’s tempting!! I went to Amazon.com and you now have 28 reviews and they are all 5 star and wonderful! I agree with all of them and I had to write one of my own. I truly love your book. It is a work of art – indeed a stand out from the majority of books these days. Also, I would love to order the tea tin. You said it would be in late August or Sept. I didn’t see it in your webstore. Is it not available for pre-order? Isn’t it terrible that we have to wait!! You showed us your lovely products and we want them NOW!! But seriously, if I have to wait to order it, I guess I will. Thank you so much for sharing your lovely artwork with us.
    Debby

    • sbranch says:

I figure if I have to be patient, I want to get others in on it with me! 🙂 Easier to wait with a group than all by yourself! I’ll ask Kellee if she can put up the tea for pre sale!

  92. Connie K says:

I’ve had to hide my copy of A Fine Romance from myself. I’m taking it with me on my very first cross-country train trip in 2 months, and want to savor it along the way. Can’t wait! In the meantime, I am going crazy over the tea tin – I hope we can pre-order those too. I know what I’ll be getting friends for Christmas!

Congratulations on a dream come true – what a beautiful accomplishment!

  93. Isabel (Orlando) says:

    Dear Susan,

I have finished your book the first time and just can’t stop picking it up and going through it all over again.

It seems the “girlfriends” all feel the same as I do. Was so happy to see your blog after several days.

You are so lucky you can take advantage of both coasts and the seasons. I am from the Northeast but am stuck in Florida. Hope you can get down here in the winter, as you mentioned last time I posted a comment. Did not realize you were going to be on the road for so long. But I LOVE your van. How will you be able to stand to be away from Jack and Girl for so long?

I love reading all the comments on your blog. There are truly so many wonderful people out there, with the same thoughts, hopes and dreams. Wish we could all meet at a GIANT get-together somewhere. One thing we know we have in common: we all love you and recognize and appreciate, not only your talent, but your beautiful soul. You can see the love in everything you do. Every time I see your art, I am amazed at how you hand write so much of what you do. That’s what makes it truly from the heart. All the time you take to make everything so special. I, also, LOVE your tea and tea tin. It would be perfect for me to give to a couple of my girlfriends for when we go to lunch at one of our local tea rooms. Can’t wait until it is available. P.S. love the way Joe looks in that beret.

    • sbranch says:

It’s going to be awful to be away from the cats. I know we’ll keep busy, and the time will go by. I have a wonderful kitty sitter. I’d take them if cats liked to travel, but I know I do them a big favor by keeping them at home. That’s what a kitty mom does, she protects her brood from the big noisy careless world.

Thank you for your lovely comment Isabel xoxo

I am so very happy for you, Susan. Oh joy! I will pray for you and Joe as you hit the road entrusting the Blessed Mother to care for you both. And I am so thrilled about the 2015 blotter calendar! If I were there with you, Joe and the girlfriends on the day of your departure, just picture us bringing you travel treats and throwing rose petals and glitter as you drive off. All the very, very best on your tour. You know we’re all with you in spirit.

  95. Fran says:

I was beginning to worry when so many days went by without a new post from you. I was keeping my fingers crossed that you weren’t ill or had an emergency. Well, imagine how happy I was when your new blog was here waiting for me when I came home from work. Almost as happy as the day my 4 copies of A Fine Romance arrived! The book is all that I’d hoped for and more. I had to read it cover to cover the moment I opened the box. Now I will go back and re-read it SLOWLY to relive each moment of your fantastic journey to England. You’ve given us girlfriends such a gift starting with all your fantastic blogs on the journey and now this most wonderful book. Thank you, thank you, thank you.
As always todays blog was fabulous – love the new tea tin, tea, and Joe in his beret. Good luck on your tour – wish you were coming to southern California.
    Keep those blogs a coming!
    Fran

Oh, Susan! This has been such a hard week. My wonderful, magical, special Grandma passed on Monday while I was holding her hand and thanking her for everything she has been to me and telling her how much we love her. She is off with her sweetheart, my Grandpa now, but oh, I am going to miss her. Your book came today…what a gift to me in the midst of missing my Grandma. Thank you for sharing your heart…i just started reading your love story and it is beautiful. I am so happy because we live in the Detroit area and I see that you will be in Grand Rapids on Sept. 7. My husband was ready to drive us to Chicago (sweetheart….he is my Joe), but we will be able to drive to see you in Grand Rapids and not have to get an overnight sitter for our corgi. I will be the girl who cries and falls into a puddle at your feet…don’t be scared…that’s just how I show my whole-hearted love! Your book is an absolute treasure…it is going to live on my nightstand with Gladys Taber, Anne Morrow Lindbergh and Katrina Kenison….your beautiful book came at just the right time. I am going to try to read it slowly and savor each and every page. Thank you for all your hard work. See you on the 7th….xoxoxo. Ps…your van is the cutest van in the world

    • sbranch says:

So very sorry about your grandma. But I have to say, you helped her out in the most beautiful way. I hope I am so lucky. We’ll see you in Grand Rapids Laura xoxo

  99. Deanah from Suffolk Virginia says:

I am just about to get in bed with your book, and travel to England……..Oh sweet dreams!

P.S. my 13 year old daughter shares the love of reading your post and books with me, even Gladys Taber, but to my surprise she was just as smitten as I was with your love story at the beginning of a Fine Romance. I think you have made us both believe in real soul mates even if it takes a try or two.

Thank you for being such a inspiration to real life with grace.

  100. Nettie says:

My goodness there is nothing I can say that hasn’t been said….we love you we love your new book and your Joe is pretty darn special too.
I want to buy your book for all my friends cause I love it so but just can’t so maybe I will lend it but that will be hard.
Leaving on a two week vacation in Ontario Canada so will be taking the book along to keep me company at the lake. Where we stay has quite an English influence so it will be fun to be reading the book while there.
Can’t wait to see that van in my neighborhood .
