Who Needs Normal?

In bloom, here, as I speak, around the trunk of the Albizzia tree right out back, are daffodils!  There is nothing normal about Daffodils at Thanksgiving . . . Musica, my darling girls?  Oh yes, the prettiest song ever . . .

No, daffodils are definitely not normal, but who needs normal when you can have this:
This is Sasha (our pug-nosed dream) and she is one of our two adorable Studio kitties.  I’ve been wanting to give you a tour of our studio/house here in California so I thought today would be a good day for it.
From the outside it looks like a normal cottage ~ a little old-fashioned and romantic with pure white iceberg roses in bloom and picket fences . . .
We bought this place on the Central Coast of California in June of 2002.  But it didn’t always look like this.  You are about to see what a little paint and elbow grease can do.  Here is the “before” picture ↓
You actually paid money for that?  It had some very good things about it … surrounded with apple trees, avocados, oranges, walnuts, figs and limes, set in a wide ancient fertile river bed (capable of growing sweet peas almost year round not to mention artichokes and lemons) on eight acres in a valley about five miles from the Pacific Ocean.  The land was flat, with wide open spaces, a running creek, lovely sunrises, moderate temperatures, blue birds, and breezes up from the sea, but everything else needed help, desperately. The garage had a corrugated tin roof (and still does but since we painted it green, it looks a whole lot better), gophers and ground squirrels were estimated at 100,000 in round numbers; they drilled holes everywhere providing a happy hunting ground for hawks that circled high overhead constantly. There was an unenclosed goat barn (in the photo, on the right), no garden at all, and rampantly growing weeds; the house was and is a crunchy antique doublewide primarily made from fake faux paneling and linoleum.  And what did we say when we saw all this?  We’ll take it!
We weren’t looking for fancy which was a good thing because we definitely weren’t getting it.
. . . but I did need my picket fence garden . . .
So that’s what Joe did first, before we painted the house.  He had to dig down and line the bottom of the garden in hardware cloth to keep the gophers out ~ you can see the corrugated metal siding on the garage on the right.  Joe covered the metal with white lattice and built an arbor off the side of it.

He built picket fences, planted a lawn, lots of bushes and hedges, flowers, corn and more trees, to make our version of a cottage “built with lilacs and laughter.”  Joe, our employee and friend Alfredo, and my brother Chuck painted the house white and enclosed the goat barn for storage . . .
My sister Shelly, my BFF Diana (the one in our Book) and me, we wore white paper painter’s suits and ate ice creams with Joe as our fearless leader, while we painted the whole inside of the house.  This is kind of what it looked like when we lived here part of the year, before we turned the living room into our Studio.
And at certain times of the year, the garden looks like this.  River bottom dirt is a good thing.  (Wild thing, you make my heart sing . . .)
and sometimes the sky looks like this ….
and just down the road it looks like this around 5 pm . . . free for the taking.
When we landed here a few weeks ago after driving from Massachusetts to California in our Fine Romance Van . . .
. . . as we came up the walk, we brushed past a bush you can smell before you see it . . . the glossy green leaves are covered with my favorite flower in the whole world, the gardenia.  They grow here, outside.  You water them with a hose like any normal plant.  I know.  Doesn’t seem possible, does it?
I picked this bouquet of  “Just Joey” and yellow “Julia Child” roses from the garden to take to the Remnants of the Past book signing.  Two of the best smelling roses imaginable bloom here almost year-round.
My girlfriend just called to tell me that yesterday it snowed two inches on Martha’s Vineyard!  And I can’t wait!

Inside the house, it’s just as you would expect, there’s a kitchen and bedrooms . . . but it’s also our Studio now so there are desks, computers, files, an art table, a copier, products, design projects, antiques that need their photos taken . . . It was spotless when we got here — I wish I would have taken pictures then!
here’s our stretching freckled mascot . . .
and guard cat . . .
Kellee comes every day around eight, sometimes she brings Reese, her yellow lab.  Sheri and Bonnie work part time, Alfredo is always here . . . This is Kellee’s desk.
Alfredo, Sheri, Kellee (Kellee’s mom Kitty makes our wooden toys on wheels) and Bonnie (we celebrate birthdays at the beach).
This is Reese fishing in the creek.
Reese is one more reason why even our studio is a fine romance.
A whole lot goes on at our Studio ~ we may be little, but we are crafty!  There are projects in piles everywhere.  Here we are putting recipe cards with our Heart of the Home Cookie Cutter sets . . .
. . . while under the table, Sammy is ever alert for treats and or kisses . . .
(Oh Suza-anne ♫ ????  Do you see his beauty mark ?. . . Inspiring, isn’t it? 🙂 )
This pile of quilts was waiting to decorate our booth at the Remnants of the Past Show and Book signing . . .
Kellee made two of these great big lamb posters on foam core for the show ~ it’s always a work in progress around here!
And just in time for the show, our Christmas and Come~Sit~Stay Tea Towels showed up.
So of course we hung them on our stove in the kitchen of the studio and I grabbed six of each right off the top for my Vineyard Girlfriends!
And look at this other surprise that just arrived:
We received an early Christmas gift from Romantic Homes Magazine with this little spread on the very last page of their December issue!   See anyone you recognize?  They asked me for a list and some photos of my favorite things. Which is, in and of itself, one of my favorite things.  Like counting blessings in a magazine!
Out back, inside our tiny, handy little goat barn . . .
Joe helps take delivery of  our second printing . . .
Then everyone works to ship our new book, A FINE ROMANCE to our Girlfriends . . .
When a new order of books first arrives, it’s a family affair ~ everyone brings their kids to help for the day ~ and they did a wonderful job!  Such professionals!  Here is lunch with Sheri (on the left), Maddie (Sheri’s daughter), Bonnie, Nathan (Sheri’s son), Eric (Alfredo’s son), Alfredo, Wes (Bonnie’s son), and Kellee.  The “magic” that comes out of our Studio has more to do with hard work and a serious enjoyment for making the world a more wonderful place.
When it was time to take the moveable feast to Remnants, Joe and Alfredo packed boxes and furniture into cars, truck, van and trailer to take to the Madonna Inn.
They brought hutches and bookcases for the booth . . .

. . . hung quilts on the walls of the tent (quilts make the best wallpaper!), put in the furniture and the girls began to arrange everything . . . lambs, Union Jack dishtowels, bags, clocks, Emma cups,
. . . heart teapots, notebooks, spotted mugs, Beatrix Potter figurines, my favorite lavender tea, tea tins, books, dream charms, they hung the new tea towels on the hutch doors ~ we brought it all!
Our new Union Jack bunting arrived just in time!  We hung it up and that was it ~ Time to open the gates and let the shopping begin . . .
I’m way on the other side of this crowd . . . saying hello, hugging, and signing books . . . and this is pretty much all of the show I saw.
Kellee and the girls said it was like a party all day long!  There were over 3,000 visitors to the show on Sunday alone!  And none of us ever stopped smiling!
Here are Kellee and Bonnie in their cute aprons (if you’d like the pattern to this apron go HERE, scroll to the bottom and click on FREE PATTERNS) and their TEAM ROMANCE badges . . .
Sheri kept refilling the bookshelves . . . .
That’s my friend Peg . . . the wonderful Peg who has run our FOSB Friends of Susan Branch Facebook Page from the very beginning . . . She was there with her husband Charlie. I’m wearing my three Dream Charms on a chain around my neck … everyone asks me about them, I wear them everyday — they seem so much a part of the book, the trip, and us. xoxo
Joe went down the line (they arranged the line like at Disneyland, in back-and-forth snake fashion which makes it really easy for groups to talk to each other) and said hello to everyone and took pictures. We could hear all the laughter in the line . . . they were making friends and I signed books until waaay after dark.
With these two new best friends watching all the action.  In my next post I’ll show you a bit more . . . some good surprises happened at the end of the day.
A FINE ROMANCE is up to 182 five-star reviews on Amazon and still growing if you can believe that!! And I know it’s you!  Thank you ♥ ♥ ♥.  I’ve gotten so many notes from new Girlfriends who are just now taking their first trip with us to England and loving it as much as we did.  We’ve had a wonderful visit out here . . . and on Friday (or maybe Saturday the way it’s looking) we start for home! Are you ready to go . . . or do you need a few more days with the roses?  Tell me . . .  XOXO
P. S. Thinking about Thanksgiving!

  1. Another wonderful post, Susan — I loved seeing your California place. Fast question— who takes care of those California kitties when y’all are back on the east coast? Do they come back with you?

Still reading your book, still falling in love with England vicariously. I got such a kick out of seeing Joe’s doll. I have a travel doll, too; remember the Ginny and Ginnette dolls of the ’50’s? (I still have all of mine, including clothing, furniture, and accessories!) I’ve taken Ginnette with me on several trips. She’s only 8 inches tall and fits rather nicely into a purse. I’ve got a photo journal of our travels together — a favorite photo shows her on the back of my husband’s Harley parked near the top of Mt. Mitchell. Fun stuff. You’ve inspired me to take her with me again. It’s been awhile.

Sending blessings from here on Windy Hollow Farm in NC.
    “Miss Potter” 😎

    • sbranch says:

Kellee, Alfredo, Bonnie and Sheri take care of them — they are Studio cats and live here all the time. I do remember Ginny dolls, loved them! Nice to hear from you Miss Potter!

  3. Chris Wells in Knickerbocker, W TX says:

    Dear Susan,
Thank you for another look into “the life of Susan Branch “. It is why we feel you are SO ONE OF US! I chuckled at the statement “we’ll take it!” Isn’t that the words Gladys Taber used when she saw Stillmeadow? The work you and Joe have done, is out of pure love. Not every one has the gift to see what something CAN be, instead of what it is. Now I love your California home even more. I love that your West Coast home is filled with kitties, puppies, and kindred souls. What an incredible almost 3 month tour you have been on. Hope you have loved it as much as all your legends of fans have.
With much love and safe travels.
    Chris and Jim

    • sbranch says:

We’ve loved it Chris. I told Joe the other day I sometimes I feel like Evita on her European tour! 🙂

  4. Pat Stansel says:

Just what I needed, A delightful new post !!, You really can read our minds—–been wanting to have a peek of the Ca. Home. Brilliant idea using it as the studio, beautiful inspiring location—-know wonder your staff is so happy! I’m even in one of the photos 3rd from last under the parking sign.

  5. Dawn (Elmhurst, IL) says:

    Hi Susan,
Thanks so much for inviting us all to visit your CA home! It was so nice to see all of the special people and things that we hear about so often. I’m really happy that you and Joe were there when the second printing arrived. You could experience the huge thrill first hand! Everyone’s hard work truly turned your space at the Remnants show into the Heart of the Home for an amazing weekend. What memories you will carry in your heart! This Thanksgiving there is so much to treasure and be thankful for! We feel the same way. You made so many Girlfriends so happy as you traveled west!! Now the happiness continues as you begin to make your way east. Each day you will be closer to Home Sweet Home! ♡
    Safe travels!
    Love,
    Dawn
    ♡♡

    • sbranch says:

Thank you Dawn! Yes, so much to be grateful for. Love sharing the planet with all of you, for starters. xo

  6. Elizabeth in Montana says:

Love the daffodils, love the quilts, love the sunshine, but looking forward to you being back on MV! Today I bought a pretty keepsake box and vintage-looking dimensional stickers to decorate it, to hold all of the birthday cards for my Mom! Thank you all again, I can’t wait to give them to her! 🙂

  7. Elaine in Toronto says:

Beautiful, beautiful post! Enjoyed the tour and meeting everyone. You must have had so much fun at “Remnants of the Past” and what a lot of hard work to pull it together. Wow, Sammy, Sasha, Reese, Petey and little mini- Jack – no one left out.
And roses, gardenias, daffodils – perfect. Stay safe on your journey home and have lots of adventures.

  8. CindyK says:

Looks like lots of fun! Wish I could have been there!
The California place is so you. It has Susan Branch written all over it, and Joe was obviously a big part of making that happen. It’s a gorgeous little place. I remember when you bought it, showed us pictures and all!
Congratulations on the book doing so well! I love mine!! I was in the very first batch, and it really is thrilling to see it go to so many printings now! When do they stop? Will they keep printing as long as it’s selling, or how do they figure that out?
I have not been able to find Yankee magazine here, been looking all over. I will have to check and see if I can still order it from you.
    Have a safe drive back!

  9. Lorrie says:

Such a lovely post. I think it’s time for me to read A Fine Romance again. And this time I want to take my time and look at some of the extras you’ve put on line. It’s such a wonderful book, Susan. Makes me want to use it as a guide book and follow along in your footsteps.

Will you be driving back to the east coast or taking the train?

  10. Hello,
Wonderful tour of the Studio. Thank you.
I am ready to go HOME with you, too. I miss your kitties and MV.
    Be safe!
    Love, Carla

    • sbranch says:

We’re going. I got the stuff to make my favorite cold slaw to take in our ice chest. Making it today. Getting my Honeycrisp apples washed.

  11. Ricki says:

I’m a new friend and feel as if I’ve known you forever. What a wonderful book and I was in one of the suitcases on the “boat” but a little shy so didn’t say much. I love how you take us with you and we all know what a big job it is to keep us all informed for we fret when we don’t hear from you. California has been so much fun but I am so homesick for MV and Jack and Girl Kitty. Be careful driving and know we all love you and are so proud of you. Ricki

\It would take you two months to cover Texas….we would love it.

    • sbranch says:

We are saving Texas until we have those two months! You’re a doll Ricki, so nice to hear from you. You were very good on the trip!

  12. Cindy Maulin says:

hi susan….thank you for taking us on a little tour of the CA estate…..what visionaries you and Joe were to snap up that place and turn it into the gorgeous homespun place it is. your before/after picture is truly amazing…and the photo with the rainbow says it all….just beautiful…I guess there really is a pot o’ gold…..
Just got through bagging up my Jack Daniels Spiced Pecans to give to friends at school tomorrow…I used your recipe cards to carry the instructions; punching a hole in the corner and tying the card to the bag with bakers twine…just adorable….I LOVE those recipe cards and use them all the time.
well…enjoy those beautiful not normal flowers…it’s 34* here, the fire is crackling and the tea is hot…. very normal!!! 🙂 xoxo love, cindy

  13. Sue Francoeur says:

    Hi Sue,

I was there last Sunday. You all did a fabulous job and deserve a vacation! I am even in one of these photos! I can only imagine your longing for your own bed, but I know I speak for a lot of people when I say it was wonderful having you and Joe at this show and at all your other stops. Have a safe trip home and a Happy Thanksgiving!

    xxoo, Sue from Simi

  14. Irene Talaasen says:

Oh, Susan, I wish I could have been at your booth there! Love all the things you had there for sale. Fun to see your California house! and garden and flowers.
    You are an inspiration!
Hugs to you and Joe too and the little Jack and Petey, how cute they look together.
Irene in Colorado who wishes you were doing a signing in Colorado Springs!!!!!!!!

  15. Joan says:

What a “MIRACLE” you performed with the property in California…whoever would know it is the same place.
Loved the blog and I could almost smell the gardenias!!!
    Happy trails to you. 🙂

    • sbranch says:

It’s pretty darn sweet. Put a nice clean dress on the old girl, added a corsage of roses and gardenias and off she went, the belle of the ball. xoxo

  16. Susan P. says:

Susan…..What a terrific day we all had on Sunday….Yes there was allot of laughter as we waited in line…and Joe was so nice to stop and talk and take pictures and get all of our names down on paper to make it easier for you….But I was the lady in the red sweater and he stopped right at us….but as we got to the front about six people away from you, he started right where we were and we were so happy..he said he knew exactly where he left off at the “lady in the red sweater” But what I really want to say to all the girlfriends out there.. that you two and all of your staff are the BEST…All the ladies in the booth took their time and answered all the questions from everyone and were so helpful to us all. Also if you have not met Susan Branch you are missing the sister and or the best friend in your life….She greeted each and everyone with a smile and a hello just as if we were the most important and only person there right at that moment. Yes, I went home a happy person……okay okay yes as my husband put his arm around me and we walked away yes I had tears in my eyes…it was like being in that garden in England, all alone with just her and I…and we knew what each other was feeling and thinking. Thank you….the soap box lady…. Susan P.

    • sbranch says:

Well, now I have tears in my eyes! It was a wonderful day Susan, and you and your husband were part of what made it that way! It takes a village, and we have a good one! xoxo

  17. Val says:

You had me at “Daffodils at Thanksgiving.” 🙂 They’re my favorite flower. To see them this time of year must be magical.

And that is THE prettiest booth/vendor spot I’ve ever seen. Pure sweetness. And I love the “old bag” bags. 🙂

I’m always delighted to see a post from you no matter the topic, but I am sooooooo eager for the holidays this year, like a CHILD, I’m just loving any mention of Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year’s. I’ve had “Carol of the Bells” in my head all week. It is featured in some commercial that’s on TV lately, and that was that. 🙂

Enjoy your California days, and thank you for taking us along. ♥

    • sbranch says:

My pleasure . . . I know what you mean, I have the mantle over my fireplace all decorated (in my mind) …

  18. Audrey by the sea. says:

Wonderful warm vibes coming to us through the computer.
Your studio house and ground are lovely as is the picture of you and Peg, as well as all of the other girlfriends. Kitties too.
“Our booth” looks so pretty the way it was set up. So much effort put in by very happy people…that’s the magic.
    The magic of Susan Branch.

  19. Lisa R (northern Az) says:

Your booth is beautiful! What a fun day it must have been. So happy for you and all the success with A Fine Romance. I’m realizing how hard it is to find beautiful, heartwarming, and fun art like Susan Branch art! I am going to miss your blotter calendar so much!! I can’t find anything that even slightly compares! Oh, I hope they are back in 2015 Susan. Pretty please. ♥

  20. Diana Everett says:

Hi Susan! It seems like yesterday that Morris and I met you at the Learned Owl in Hudson, Ohio! You have really traveled some ground since then. It is indeed time to go home! Enough roses for now…..let’s have some snow and maybe a brief return of fall ( who can tell with this weather anymore?!) . Time to get cozy, nest, settle in…..and enjoy Martha’s Vineyard to the hilt. Safe travels, girlfriend! Hugs –

  21. Nancy B says:

Oh, I loved seeing your booth at Remnants, Susan. All the lovely quilts made such a nice background. Your Come.Sit.Stay. dishtowels are now on my wish list. They are so cute and match my cute Tea Tin. Yes, I use the word “cute” a lot! (see above). It was fun to see inside your little cottage studio and imagine all the hard work that goes on in there. I appreciate all those girls for all they do to keep your blog and shopping site so much fun. Tell them I said, “Thank you”.

    Happy Travels!
    Nancy (from Bakersfield)

    • sbranch says:

I will do that Nancy! The whole time I was signing at Strawberry Patches my eyes were scanning over the quilts in that room, thinking “what if I could have any of them, which would be my favorite?” Such a good game! And hard too, so many pretty ones in there! xoxo Take care.

  22. Elizabeth says:

Wonderful blog post as always, love seeing your East Coast home, so perfect and cosy, everyone looks so happy and friendly. I love your garden, so pretty, Joe is just so clever, is there anything he can’t do? By the way, what is normal? It’s probably very boring whatever it is. Have a wonderful day and thank you for a lovely blog – you’re an inspiration.

    • sbranch says:

I used to think normal was everyone but me. So when I first wrote “we are the normal ones” I was sticking up for me and everyone who loves the things I love and taking back the name for us. It was the OLD normal that was very boring … this new normal, highly interesting! 🙂 Thank you Elizabeth!

  23. Stephanie says:

Thanks so much for sharing this with us! I’ve always wondered about that other house – none of my business of course – but this was lovely to see all that’s going on! Now I see the place and people where my “stuff” comes from. A special thanks to the SB team for always sending things in white paper with little Susan Branch stickers holding it together (I save those!) which is such a charming touch.

But wait – I have a major question. If you have 8 acres with avocados, oranges, figs, limes etc. – does the team send you boxes of food out to Martha’s Vineyard when the fruit ripens? I would constantly be asking for boxes of that stuff to be sent!

I thought I’d be a little heartbroken not to be on MV with you this fall (I do love reading about the Halloween party each year) – but this has been a really fun journey – no need to hurry back! 🙂 However – it will be a treat to have you in MV for Christmas. I can’t handle a daffodil in December…

    • sbranch says:

Just the limes and sometimes the avocados! Here, if you plant a daffodil, it just comes right up! It doesn’t get that seasonal thing!

  24. Kathie says:

So lovely, California, where the weather in November can be nice enough for a fair. It feels good on the bones, that warmth. Still, in the north, we love our changes of seasons. We went from dessert to snow last week just by traveling a few miles east to Palouse Divide Lodge for a retreatprairiecottagecorner.blogspot.com/2013/11/palouse-divide-retreat-2013-welcome-to.html I’m afraid we didn’t want to come home! We weren’t away long enough. I need a few more weeks away before the need to come home becomes unbearable. At some point, trips and retreats that go on a long time become a sort of sacrifice. We all appreciate the sacrifice you and Joe are making to bring joy and loveliness to us. We’re enjoying your book, immensely, my best friend and I. She actually doesn’t have hers yet but I’m going to order it for her this week. Meantime, we’re sharing. Have fun, you two, and be sure to get enough rest in between engagements. It looks pretty busy! We love you very much!

    • sbranch says:

The “unbearable need to go home” — It’s not unbearable for me quite yet. I know when it will get unbearable…when we are on the boat. Waiting for the boat to dock is always unbearable when we’ve been away for a while. The guys tying the boat to the dock and putting on the ramps, seem to take forever! Driving up Main Street, rounding the corner, seeing the house, pulling into the driveway, opening the door.

  25. Pat Johnson from Paso Robles, CA says:

Thank you sooo much for sharing your little cottage here in Central California. You most certainly have had the weather for flowers and anything that will grow – much too dry up in Paso and we are praying for rain (none coming in November!!!!). The best part of your life here is much like your life in Martha’s Vineyard – living in the trees but able to take in the ocean wonder. Just a different part of the country….I bet you are looking forward to going home. Both of you have been troopers on this trip – I know it has been exciting sharing and meeting new friends. But as Dorothy said “There’s no place like home.” So jazzed that you had such a wonderful crowd at Remnants – I didn’t get to come as I am busy getting my daughter and her 3 children moved into the house with me. Her husband got a job in the Bay area and they are staying in Paso until school gets out. Needless to say, I am already pooped and we have only just begun. I was with you in spirit and go back to the book every now and again when I need an “uplifting” moment. To say you are the sanity in my life right now is an understatement. Once I get them settled in I am looking forward to a trip to the cabin in Newport, WA. Hopefully it will snow me in!!! This entire “book trip” has been fabulous and have loved sharing in your reports. Go with God – enjoy the trip home – and dream of seeing kitties once again and resting your head on your pillow in your very own bed. And I am so proud of what you have accomplished. Way to go, BFF!!! Hugs to you & Joe! XXXXOOOO Pat

    • sbranch says:

Pat! I looked for you! I’m so sorry you couldn’t get away — you always write such lovely things and I was hoping to meet you. But I can see how busy you are, and it was pretty crowded up there. I will add my prayers to yours that you get snowed in. Take good food with you, thick socks, new flannel jammies, because I feel it’s going to happen. xoxo

  26. Rebekah says:

Yippee! I’m in the photo Joe took of the line. 🙂 I wasn’t sure if I was in the shot when he was taking it. The hubby and I are on the far right. It was so fun meeting you! Thankyou for signing my book! Your a treasure! Love to You and Joe!

  27. paulie says:

Good Morning Susan and Joe !
The magic of it all! Loved this post! Loved the gardenia’s. Bottle that aroma and bring some back please. Loved seeing the cottage and how it all evolved and all of the wonderful staff ! And about everything, all I can say is when someone looks at us and says “Think Big” in order to succeed at a passion, well I do not know how anyone could have thought any bigger nor accomplished so much as you have with so much hard work and love! And there lies the secret. Hard work, enthusiasm, passion and love! You two make such an awesome team!
And we girlfriends and friends have reaped the prizes………along with you. Thank you so much for sharing your joys with us! Have a very safe journey home. Cannot imagine how exhausted you must be by now and hope you will take a good rest when you reach the shores of home. Dress warm ! You’ll need it.

    • sbranch says:

I actually never did think very big, it was just one day at a time, one foot in front of the other, doing what seemed to “need” to be done. If I would have thought ahead, I might have scared myself! xoxo Thank you so much Paulie ~ I hear you, dress warm!

      • Jane F. says:

This is so encouraging! And doable, when you think this way! Just look around today, and do this day’s “needs” — one foot in front of the other! Thank you for that! Can always count on inspiration and real love from the heart, here! 🙂

        • sbranch says:

The whole time I was writing the book I would say to myself every day, Today we move forward . . . we will be two steps further along than we were yesterday and that will be good enough. It was quite inspiring for me too, that kind of thinking! xo

          • Jane F. says:

When I’m writing, I have a spiral 8 1/2 x 11 notebook, I keep separate from my “writing” Writing!! (if that makes sense)! A kind of journal just for my writing, and each time I begin, I write out the question: “OK. What do I know?” It gets me going!! Then I can work on the stories in my “real” Writing notebook!! May seem silly, but that’s how it works for me!! It is very motivating, too to look back on those dated entries and see where I have come. Even on the slow days!! 🙂

          • sbranch says:

Interesting. I love hearing how people begin, the habits of creative people are always fascinating to me.

  28. Becky Maggio says:

Finding a new posting in the early morning hours is always such a sweet treat! Guess where this bayou country girl is? Biltmore Inn in Asheville, N.C. Amazing, breathtaking, peaceful, inspiring….I could go on an on!! Not our first time here but last night was our first Christmas Candle light Tour of Biltmore House and it was “magical”! Another bucket list check off…thanks to my adoring soul mate 🙂 I highly recommend this to all of the girlfriends. I do believe if there had been blogging in the late 1800’s, George & Edith Vanderbilt would have been as loved by the girlfriends as you are, Sue.

Love your cottage in California and everything about it, including your wonderful staff. They must be very special people and dear to your heart. I know you and Joe are now so ready to be back “home” on MV and we are ready to have you there, too. I’ve only been away from home for 9 days and can’t wait to return. Thanksgiving thoughts/traditions are calling, even though I will hate to leave this gorgeous mountain majesty.

Safe travels home to you and Joe. Our thoughts and prayers go with you…always!! Take care…Becky & Papa

  29. mary spring says:

…good morning Susan and (and everyone on the beloved west coast ) !!..this post was definetly worth the wait !..thank you..!! how I miss that area !!..I was born and raised in California with grapefruit trees and orange trees and other fruit trees growing in our own backyard !!..my parents love flowers also, as my grandmother (who lived across the street did)..one of my sisters lives in the middle of their vineyards (our family loves wine..needless to say )…seeing those photos made me want to go back …ahh, dear west coast living !!..thank you,Susan..you work so hard and you seem to spread magic wherever you go !!..take care and withlove, as always..

    • sbranch says:

It’s fun to show the homesick ones glimpses of their motherlands … on both coasts! Glad you liked it Mary. xoxo

  30. Marysol says:

California or Martha’s Vineyard. What a choice to make amid so much beauty.

At any rate, be safe, and try to never catch ‘normal.’

    • sbranch says:

I know. Terrible choices — and then there’s all the gorgeousness in between! We are the new normal.♥

  31. So beautiful — California sounds so WARM 🙂 I grew up with gardenias in Mississippi too, huge bushes of them. They’re also my favorite flower. But I’m eager for you to get back to the Vineyard because I miss reading about your life there. I’m an east coast gal 🙂 I’m hoping to get your book for Christmas — I know I’m late! It will be a treat. Thanks for all you do to make our lives happy and our days bright. It’s a blessing!

  32. Carol (Daisy) says:

Wow. . . another wonderful post, and so quickly!! You are just too good to us, really! Your studio is just lovely . What a wonderful place to be able to ‘work’. It took me quite a while to get through the blog today as I didn’t want to miss one single thing in any of the pictures. It’s hard to imagine all the work that went into making the studio the beautiful place it is now. Your ‘tent’ looked just like the cutest little store. How much fun you must all have had and it looks like the weather was in full cooperation as well. Note to self. . . must purchase a ‘Take an Old Bag Shopping’ tote. That is hilarious!

  33. Julie Marie says:

First thing in the morning, I bring my coffee in and look at your blog Susan… love checking in with you and all of the girlfriends… it so reminds me of when I was a little girl and my mama’s two best girlfriends, Bobby and Dee would come to our house… the three of them would sip coffee, eat a goodie and chat… no catty gossip… just friendly conversation, swapping recipes… etc… I loved hearing their laughter as they started out their day… that is what coming to your blog feels like to me… I love hearing about where the other girlfriends live and what is going on in their little towns too… also wanted to tell you Susan, that you have given me a new appreciation of winter!… I loved it as a little girl, sledding and building snowmen and such… then, started disliking it as I got older… we get sooo much snow here in Utah, and it gets sooo cold!… but, you have made me realize the beauty winter carries with her, and how much nicer the comforts of home even seem… we have a BIG winter storm warning out snow for this weekend, so I am off today to stock up on food and everything we need to stay “cozy”… maybe some new flannel jammies too, like you mentioned to Pat!… hope you and Joe get back home before snow hits all across the country… xoxo… Moi

  34. Julie Marie says:

I think I can hear my mama and Bobby and Dee’s laughter right now… they are “girlfriends” of yours too… I am sure…

  35. Julie Marie says:

Sorry for all the added comments… my mama, Bobby and Dee are girlfriends in Heaven…

    • sbranch says:

My mom’s best friend was a Dee too … they did the same thing, girltalk (but their visits always took place amongst their combined brood of 16 children!) — I always think I learned from the best.

  36. Winnie Nielsen says:

Ohh, the California home is just the cutest cottage ever. What a metamorphosis! The gardens with all of the flowers and roses are so wonderful and the property is quite scenic and lovely. Indeed, you found a diamond in the rough! It was also great to “meet” Kellee, studio kitties, Reese, and watch the behind the scenes work of your business. So much love in every infused into every task! This tour has been nothing short of incredible at each twist and turn of the road. Each post crammed with photos of girlfriends getting a chance to meet you and each other. It has been this amazing from start to finish!

Snow on MV?? Ohhhh, I bet it looked magical with the remnants of late fall still around. Somehow, a light snow and Thanksgiving seem to go together perfectly in my mind down here in Florida. It suggests that crisp air, grey skies, breath showing when you breathe out all folding together to make coming inside and smelling all of the goodness baking in the kitchen that more satisfying! At least that is how I remember Thanksgiving growing up in Virginia (minus the snow, however). The photo of your table setting is a reminder of all the good things to plan for and enjoy in just two short weeks! Yay!!

Yes, count me in with Julie’s reply. I am ready to go home! It has been fun but I am missing all of the beauty of Martha’s Vineyard during the fall and it will be fun to get back just in time for the magic of the upcoming Holiday Season!

    • sbranch says:

It won’t be long. You would love the conversation between Joe and I yesterday …
me: “Did the cord of wood get delivered?”
      him: I don’t know.
me: We’re going to need a fire when we get home.
him: Even if it didn’t come, there’s still enough for a couple of fires.
me: Oh, good. Big sigh of relief. Saved by the bell.

      • Winnie Nielsen says:

For where you live, I would be giving out a sigh of relief too! Brrrr!! For me, if I lived there, the very first thing I would want would be to sit in front of the fire with a mug of hot tea and just stare. With Jack on my lap and Girl Kitty on the sofa back. And just stare in disbelief at all that had transpired since the dog days of August heat and summer! I am an introvert by nature so maybe this reaction makes no sense to you. Hahaha! All of us girlfriends are so different!

  37. Pam says:

It’s been a wonderful trip but, snow on Martha’s Vineyard, you just can’t resist that 🙂

  38. Gert~Iowa says:

Oh Susan..what an amazing post!! Love..love..love your studio!! I thought when I saw your place (before) i knew you could bring beauty to it…as an artist full of creativity! And having Joes in put…nothing was impossible! smile.. There is beauty everywhere….from flowers to sunsets! How blessed you are.

Someday I hope to find Julia Child’s roses…my favorite flower..

    Blessings and drive safe!
    Gert

    • sbranch says:

Paint is one great invention! 🙂 I hope you can get Julia roses too, they smell so wonderful, are the prettiest deep yellow color and so prolific on the big bushes!

      • Chris Wells in Knickerbocker, W TX says:

As my Mother-in-law used to say, “a little paint and paper and we can fix this place up!” What a funny memory….thanks.

  39. Christie Ray says:

So now we can all visualize Kellee sitting there in all her cuteness, when we talk to her on the phone:)) Thank you for the tour of your studio, storage, trailer, tent layout…rolodex-ing ideas;) I LOVE the little shelf for the BP people…darling! And there’s Peg! So good to finally “meet” her! Just a bit of a gasp when I scrolled down to the Gardenias…mother and dad posted a pic of one of their blooms…and it took me back to my childhood home in orlando, fl. I could smell them! She let me babysit her bush and topiary while they went to Africa, and wound up saying I could keep them. I would open the front door this summer, and through the screen door, I could get whiffs of heaven. I must bring them in now for the nights are getting nippy…
Thank you for designing more dishtowels…my last one has been used and loved and used and loved…so …yep…it’s a bit faded;)
The Darling kitties help to make it feel like home…but I say head on home..my goodness there’s snow, there, and a fireplace!!… (coming from a half-hermit-home-body;)
Enjoy your time there, and thank you for taking the time to get us up to speed…the Remnants show looked like it was worth the whole trip just to get to there!
    Hugs and blessings,
    Christie Ray from Franklin, Tennessee

    • sbranch says:

Good morning Christie Ray! Have a wonderful day!

      • You too:) Found the pattern for the darling hat quilt! Yay! looked for your fabrics…did I miss them ? Found the dishtowels, too…AHH-dorable!!

        • sbranch says:

We have several of my fabrics in one-yard cuts left … you might have to call Kellee so she can tell you where to look for them on line. We have so little left, I’m not sure if it’s up or not. I know we have 4 or 5 one-yard pieces of some of the Tea Party Line in pinks and a one that would look good with it, kind of peach with yellow squares on it — also some blue with lambs …cute!

          • sounds perfect!! Itching to quilt….and then next summer, when we’re back on MV, you can sign it;) That will serve as over-the-top motivation!!
P.S. sophia and i have hit the playroom/studio with such passion…pulling out and rearranging. May be a completely hopeless cause, but giving it a whirl. See, your post has my wheels all a’turning:O

          • sbranch says:

Can’t be hopeless, it’s going to be wonderful!

  40. Missi says:

Hi! I love your blog and your books. I just bought your new book for my mom for Christmas.

I love seeing pictures of your homes. How do you split your time between each place?

    • sbranch says:

Thank you Missi! We’re mostly on the east coast these days … we haven’t been back to California in two years, way too long!

  41. Lynn McMahon says:

A living testament to the fact that one should always “do” what one “loves” and the rest will just kind of fall into place! Made your Bread Pudding with Whisky Sauce on the weekend for the first time……..omh……yet another keeper for the Master Book!
    Keep living the dream girl!

  43. Lori from California says:

Eight acres in California five miles from the ocean, of course you bought the place, that’s gold around here. Such a wonderful post, I loved seeing the transformation. I imagine one of the hardest things leaving your home in California is saying goodbye to all your wonderful friends and family. Well, I love whatever you write and am just happy to read it. So whether you stay here in our beautiful California for another day or two or head back to the East Coast right away, I’m with you. 🙂

  44. I LOVE seeing the pictures, thank you for taking the time.

So good to see a picture of Peg, I feel I know her from the Facebook updates. 🙂

  45. Mary in Phoenix says:

Thanks for the awesome post on your house and studio! Love it!!! Also, thank you Susan for sharing yourself and Joe over dinner. What a gift! I still pinch myself that I was the BIG winner! So happy to have had Mary, my best girlfriend of 40 years, beside me … Think that was probably her most memorable birthday dinner ever! She defines friendship in my book … and what you write about in yours 🙂 We smiled and talked the entire drive back to OC. And then I felt that same “deep giggle inside me” all the way home to Phoenix. Must have been meant to be … and definitely S*E*R*E*N*D*I*P*I*T*Y … Just like being on Martha’s Vineyard on the day of your first book signing totally by chance. I feel like the queen of good fortune and happy discoveries! After such a LONG day of book signing, in both the heat and the cold, you were so gracious and generous with your time. I thank you and Joe for a lovely evening and for all you do for girlfriends everywhere. It doesn’t get any better than this. You are a gift and we are all blessed.

I also want to thank Judy for setting up the dinner and having such a fantastic show! Loved watching her run the weekend with such style and grace. She greeted us on our way in and thanked us on our way out with genuine gratitude. And the shop gals + shop daughter Madison were amazing to watch … such busy bees the entire day … and happy all the way! Hope you ALL had a restful Monday off. You deserved it!

“Let us be grateful to people who make us happy, they are the charming gardeners who make our souls bloom” – Marcel Proust. From a blooming soul with a grateful heart ♥ … and a devoted fan since 1986 with the birth of Heart of the Home. XOXO, Mary #1

    • sbranch says:

We’ve talked here on the blog so many times Mary, but in person was the best of all! You and your best friend, also MARY (so easy to remember your names!) were both wonderful — it was easy to see your long friendship and so nice to get to know you both a little bit. We had fun! Thank you for coming … we will wave your way as we pass very close to Phoenix on our way home! ♥

    • Dawn (Elmhurst, IL) says:

Congratulations, Mary!! How wonderful!!!!! Memories you will cherish forever!
      ♡♡ Dawn

    • Kirsten from So. Cal. says:

Dear Mary and Mary, I saw you both in SLO at the show. So glad you won the dinner with Sue and Joe! I always feel like the ones who win are supposed to win! Girlfriend Kirsten of So. Cal.

  46. Jerri says:

    Hello Susan!!!

Thank you for the wonderful post of your California Studio/Home!!!!!!

Wowee!! You and Joe have really transformed that property over the years!!!! I love your cottage/studio……so cozy. Kelly must really enjoy her work environment!!!!

You have a truly wonderful staff (family)!! Nothing like a supportive work family.

Looking at all the books you have received in both your first printing and now the second printing, I was wondering how many books you ordered for each printing? I know you are on your Fourth printing….Have you ordered a total of 50,000 books yet? Or have you exceeded that?

I wish everyone in the world would buy a copy of your book…….it is so good, in so many ways….it touches the heart of the reader. I have given 10 of your books to friends, relations, and clients, as gifts, and each person finds something different in your book, that speaks to them personally. It touches everyone in a different way.

Thank you for sharing your California Studio with us and thank you for being you!!!! I am so glad I found you!!!

What a wonderful Thanksgiving you and Joe will have this year!!!! I hope you and Joe find a cozy inn to celebrate Thanksgiving on your way back to the east coast. Maybe you could make it as far as Indiana or Ohio to celebrate the holiday this year!!!!

    Jerri

    • sbranch says:

They’ve ordered a little more than that now … but the last books won’t arrive until January. It’s all a big guess … after we ran out, we felt so bad, we probably overdid it! But you are the perfect book guardian angel Jerri, thank you so much. xoxo Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours!

  47. Nellie says:

    Happy Thursday, Susan!

My, my! You are all busy little bees! Such activity and creativity! I am in awe! It must be a bit difficult to leave.

Yes, it would seem that winter is making an early appearance. While we have had no snow here where we are, there was some on the nearby mountains. I had wondered about Martha’s Vineyard. It would be fun to be there with snow!

Loving those cats! It would appear that they have assumed their rightful positions in the studio.:-) And – I love how it is all a “family affair!”

I keep hoping there will be news of a book signing somewhere nearby as you make your return trip. Independent bookstores are few and far between here in Knoxville, though we have a Barnes & Noble and a Books-A-Million. They are convenient to I-40, if that is the route you choose. Of course, you would need assurance of the arrival of that third printing, I believe.

I looked for the December Romantic Homes, but couldn’t find it yet, so I am on the lookout!:-)

Sending along wishes for a good Thursday! Is it possible that Thanksgiving is only two weeks away?!?

    xo Nellie

    • sbranch says:

I haven’t looked at a map but I’m imagining Oklahoma City is no where near you? We’re going there! Happy day Nellie!

  48. Betsy says:

What a fun post! I loved seeing the quilts, how you set up the displays and of course all things Emma. Now I look forward to you heading home to MV and getting ready for the Holiday Season!!! No one does it like you, your home there is just so comfy cozy looking……I could curl up on your sofa with a cup of tea and feel like all was right with the world. Have a safe journey back. xo

  49. Alison from RI says:

    Hi Ms. Branch!

    — You are so very lucky to have the best of both worlds!! You have your charming and old fashioned dreamy vineyard house, and you have your beautiful fun and creative colorful California house!! How I envy you! (Though I shouldn’t complain! I am very blessed.)
Indeed there was snow here on Tuesday! It was gorgeous and magical as first snowfalls always are.
I know how you feel wanting to get back to the island. For me “the island” refers to Block Island, as it means the vineyard for you. (I’m not sure if you’ve been) but it is MUCH smaller and less exclusive. The first time I went to the vineyard I was SHOCKED because it had a highway, etc. Lol! But my god was it gorgeous and charming! Anyway, it seems whenever I’m away from it, I’m always dying to get back to what seems like my second home.
    PS– Love the cats!
Thank you for being you! Each post is a work of art! 🙂
    – Alison from “Little Rhody”

    • sbranch says:

I have been to Block Island and loved it, so charming and much smaller than MV. But you say the Vineyard has a Highway? I’m trying to think — everything is just two-lanes and the top speed allowed on the island is 45 mph, and that’s the road out in the middle on the way to the airport ~ we call it dead man’s curve 🙂 Plus there are no traffic lights on the island. Just two blinking lights. We still like to think we’re tiny. 🙂 But then Block Island wins — it only has one town and a year-round population of 1000 — we have six towns and a population of 10,000. We are NY City compared to Block Island! Then there is adorable Little Rhody xoxo

      • Alison from RI says:

I think that was the road! It was in the center of the island I remember.
My aunt and uncle own the Atlantic Inn and Eli’s Restaurant on BI, so I’m pretty lucky in that way!
        The vineyard IS beautiful though!!!

PS- Have you ever met David McCullough?

        • sbranch says:

Well, I’m not sure he would say so, but yes! Momentarily. Twinkly eyes, totally charming man. How great to have those ties to Block Island and plenty of excuses to go there. I was there for a booksigning, on a porch on a hill. Was wonderful.

      • Janet in Rochester says:

I heard that JFK Jr was considering Block Island for his wedding – partly because it was so small and private – “away from it all” – and partly because his parents were married in Rhode Island.

        • sbranch says:

You can walk all over it and it has wind-swept majesty at the top, I would think it would be an amazing place for a wedding!

  50. LindaH (northern IN) says:

    Good morning, Susan,

What fun it was reading your blog post this morning! Just like your quote, “The very pink of perfection.” I did not know that daffodils bloomed in the fall in CA, but I am enjoying my fall blooming purple iris here in Indiana! It is fun thinking about what a magical place your CA studio home is, especially since we can really envision it now. I liked that Yankee magazine called you the fairy godmother of domesticity because that is so evident in everything that you touch! Have a very safe and fun return trip east.

    • sbranch says:

I like to think a fairy godmother is a protector too ~ I would LOVE to be a protector of domesticity, it’s such a lovely part of our lives. Thank you Linda!

      • Jane F. says:

I never thought of it that way!! “Protector of domesticity” and a “Lovely part of our Lives”. Yes! It is. No matter what we do, where we live, what our education, career — this is part of all of us!! Thank you, Susan, for being the “protector” for all of us to enjoy and be inspired by. Truly the Fairy Godmother!! 🙂

        • sbranch says:

There is nothing more important than making a home. It’s where love grows, it’s our nurturing, it’s our children, it’s the children in us, our creativity, it’s our real life. xoxo Jane.

  51. Kathie Ferko says:

    Good morning,

Just a note to all the girlfriends…the glass beads do not fit Brighton bracelets…at least not mine…those sneaky people at Brighton only want their beads to be used, I guess! I bought one for myself and also one for a friend…will be wearing on a necklace…still is beautiful!

Loved the blog about the online store shipping process. It sounds like a busy but fun place!

Have a great day…Brr, it is cold here!……Kathie from Limerick

    • sbranch says:

Good information, thank you Kathie. Some have had problems with it fitting on Pandora bracelets too — and then they turn the charm around, slide it on again, and sometimes it goes. They’re hand made, so I guess all the holes are a little different. I solved it all by wearing mine around my neck on a gold chain.

  52. Just popped in from my morning walk to find your darling post. You had me laughing out loud at freckled face Sammy, then tearing up when you said,

“The “magic” that comes out of our Studio has more to do with hard work and a serious enjoyment for making the world a more wonderful place. ♥”

because that’s exactly how I feel about my little corner of the world. I’m convinced we all can make a difference. You definitely do.

Oh, my. That picture of Petey and Mini Jack is just too precious – love at first sight!

Wish I didn’t have to work today so I could savor each and every comment but the good news is there will be twice as many to read tonight when I get home.

I vote for heading home ASAP. I’m ready for kitties stretched out in front of the fire, something baking in the oven, and a walk to the water on a snowy day. Safe travels! xoxo

    • sbranch says:

I take your vote to heart Suzanne, off we go. And yes, I felt right at home with you and yours. Did I tell you that your shop is so light and bright I think you can see it from space? I mentioned that to someone, it might have been you, but that’s how it felt! So pretty and filled with inspiration. I’m grateful for your invitation and so happy I got to meet you Suzanne. xoxo (You know I was kidding about that freckle, don’t you? My cup runneth over. ♥)

  53. Jeanette says:

    Susan,
What a spectacular post!!!! Thanks for the update on ALL the goings-on! Lots, for sure.

All the flowers look so lovely and you’ve made a warm, beautiful home on both coasts – you would! You always provide the best reminders to seek out all the glorious blessings no matter where we are planted! I thank you for that.

All the precious furry baby photos are darling. As animal lovers we never can have too many of those, can we?!? I think not. Reese is such a big sweetie, I laughed at her fishing in the creek. I could just see our youngest girl, Gracie – a soon-to-be one year old rottie, doing the same thing. She’s such a big goof! We call her, “goodnes gracious a fine mess” – for many reasons, and when they look at you with those gorgeous, big, brown eyes you melt in to a big puddle of mush! :):):)

I too am thinking of Thanksgiving and took inspiration from you. I recently found (the day after we met in Goshen) at this darling antique shop in Nappannee, IN – an entire, perfect set of Johnston Brother “Fruit Sampler” dishes for an amazing price!!! I squealed with delight and carted it off home! I’d been looking for a set of their dishes for a long time, not easy to find. I can’t wait to use them. They’re all washed up and waiting in the cabinet. BIG smile!!!

I can see I have some ordering to do at the shop with some new goodies that have arrived. I’ll be making a call later today!

Sending you blessings of this autumn season to warm you and fill you with gratitude for all the goodness you share with us!
    much love,
    Jeanette

    • sbranch says:

It’s a great place for my employees to work too … a real kitchen, a picnic table, a creek for Reese …

Those dishes are going to be perfect! Lucky you Jeanette! xoxo Have a wonderful day.

  54. Priscilla from So. Ca. living in SD says:

Thank you for this post! It is wonderful to see as it is in the area where I grew up and I often visited this area. Makes me homesick.
And it is amazing to see what you and Joe created on this property. Just lovely. I have one question though…. Does Jack know about Sasha and Sammy?

  55. Pam says:

It looks like a wonderful time! The studio looks delicious, every little place filled with treasure. I remember driving out there for the barn sale, it’s such a lovely little spot. I’m glad you’re having a wondeful tour. The party at Strawberry Patches looks like it went great. I am a friend of Suzanne’s and I know she was so excited about it. I love following along. xop

    • sbranch says:

How great you two are friends Pam! Of course you would be! 🙂

      • Susan, my friend Pam is being very modest. She is a top fabric designer for Lakehouse Fabrics and has a huge following to her darling blog, Pam Kitty Morning. Such a talented gal, but what’s even better than her talent is her heart. I call her The Cheer Leader because she is always there to encourage us. You are two of a kind and I am blessed to know you both!

        • sbranch says:

You and I both commented about Pam’s “Sweet Susan” red and white quilt … our comments are right next to each other on her blog! Pam Kitty Morning may be the very first blog I ever saw — she took me on a tour through the creative world of blogging! She also came to our Farmstand Antique Show so I got to meet her too. So much talent!

          • Annette McD says:

Thanks for sharing about the Pam Kitty Morning blog. I quilt as a hobby and have just looked at this beautiful blog. I love your fabrics, Pam. Thank you for some new quilting inspiration. If there are any quilting Girlfriends out there …check it out!

  56. NANCY JO says:

    Hi,
I could go on and on about this post, but to keep it short I will say it was very interesting, and I want you to go home now. What a great book signing success so happy for you.
    Nancy Jo

Such a fun tour of the behind-the-scenes magic that happens to make everything so wonderful!! I always love seeing your CA gardens and roses! Amazing!! The white rose tree reminds me of Alice in Wonderland and the scene where the guards paint them red! Wish I could have been at The Remnants show! My word!!!! All the goodies displayed in one place with the cute aproned girls adding cheer and YOU bringing the exciting celebrity!! Bonnie sent me some of her pics and I just drooled!!! Praying for you as you leave to head back to your Jack and Girl and snow?! Safe travels, sweetie! Will be eager to hear your travelogue reports along the way! xo….KarenP.

Now I know how you do it all! Joe and your team LOL! But I still don’t know how you do the ‘all’ – you have have redefined the term ‘cottage’ industry. I am so happy for your success with A Fine Romance! It is a perfect gift, even if you don’t have a plan to visit England in the near term. It’s good for dreaming and for reminiscing. Have a wonderful week. Oh, I was visiting one of my kids and they are fostering a cat that looks just like Jack! This guy was the sleepiest fellow ever, even with three dogs chasing their tails in front of him. xo t

  59. Cathy McC. says:

Oh Susan, you look and sound so totally fulfilled. I felt that so strongly after your last post, and even more so after this one. It’s truly God’s blessing to have such friends in this world — and I thank you for all the doors and windows you’ve opened to me. Give hugs, spread joy, and pack up and head back east, in time to give Thanks for all your blessings. Special thanks for sharing all those wonderful pix of California life! Happy trails to you! Ethel

  60. Peggy Cooper says:

My Dear Susan – thank you! I woke up this morning feeling a little down. I hate feeling down so tried to think of what I could do to cheer myself up, and lucky for me, here was your new post. So I got a second cup of coffee, settled myself in, and savored all the wonderful pictures, and then read all the comments from the girlfriends. Now I feel so much better and I’m ready to take on the day with a smile on my face. Thank you for the never ending inspiration you and Joe create for all of us. Happy traveling back to your cozy home and snuggly furry children. We’ll be waiting to hear all the news of your travel back.

How lovely! What a charmed life you have created, built and live, Susan! I sooooo enjoy reading all your posts -and since it’s 30 degrees here in Virginia (brrrr….), I love the warm and the blooming flowers 🙂 The California kitties are beautiful!!! 🙂
Looking forward to Thanksgiving – so happy that your show was such a success – and thanks for sharing your team and all your happenings with us!

  63. Janet in Rochester says:

So enjoyed seeing the “Remnants” show we’ve heard so much about – what a gorgeous day you had. And what a treat to finally see the Studio! It looks just like I imagined a studio of yours would look like. Homey, comfy, cozy and kitty-filled! Kellee, Sheri, Alfredo & Bonnie must love coming to work. And Reese! I love Reese, the fishing Lab! He’s sort of “West Coast Iris!” He must be a good big brother to Sammy & Sasha or he wouldn’t get to come along with Kellee. If you ever get a photo of the three of them sometimes, please post it – too cute! Have fun packing up your traveling treats [still salivating over that citrus salad you packed in jars when you left the Vineyard] – and please be safe & careful on the road!

    • sbranch says:

Every morning the cats run out the door like they are shot from a cannon. They sashay back in about four times in a day, the last time around 3:30, they come to stay. Reese on the other hand, is at Kellee’s feet the whole time. I’ll see if I can get them together, but today, we pack!

  64. Oh my goodness. I want to be on the team and help at the cottage!!! Looks like so much work but so much fun in a wonderful atmosphere.

    • sbranch says:

It really is a wonderful atmosphere. Between getting lunch from Taco Bell and petting Kitties there is still time for serious work and planning. Can’t ask for more than that!

      • Chris Wells in Knickerbocker, W TX says:

Can you imagine if every work place, had a dog or cat? I for one would be much more excited about going to work! What a stress reliever. And think of all the extra homes there would be for all those homeless kitties and puppies! In a perfect world…..that’s the way it would be!

        • sbranch says:

Nothing more wonderful when you travel than walking into a store and finding a pet there. Makes me instantly love the people who own the store! Loved the pubs in England where there are dogs under many of the tables. The hotels here on the Central Coast are the wave of the future. Almost all of them take pets!

  65. Annette McD says:

Behind every great woman is a man with a post-hole shovel. The transformation of your property in California is AMAZING. I love your illustration of the garden plan and how Joe made it a reality. Your two make a great team. Thank you for yet another peak into your world.

Hi Susan, Joe and all the California girlfriends~Loved your post today…thanks for keeping us up on what you have been up to…YIKES!!!…you had to really pack things up for the Remnants of the Past/I love that name show!!!…now you are probably thinking about packing up again and heading east where the trees are almost bare of their leaves and where the snow has already been gracing sidewalks, driveways and yards…the snow hasn’t stayed around long, but has really gotten us moving to get boxes from the garage~that unpacking story is getting soooo old~so we can get our cars in…it is a gorgeous day here in northern Michigan…chilly with the wind blowing and whipping the waves on Little Traverse Bay into whitecaps…are you doing booksignings on your way east???…wish you could stop here…maybe someday…sending wishes for a safe and happy journey back to Martha’s Vineyard…xoxo…

    • sbranch says:

We’re doing a couple along the southern route … Albuquerque and Oklahoma City — It looks like winter is reaching down through the lower states already. Thank you Rae Ann!

  68. Barb from Ohio says:

Hi Susan, so happy to see some new pics of your beautiful home/office in California. You and Joe did such a wonderful job of transforming the place into a beautiful home and gardens. Love the kitty pictures and daffodils blooming around Thanksgiving? And I just planted some daffodil and tulip bulbs for next spring, but they’re my favorite spring flower and I’d take them in November any day if possible.
I loved the pictures from the Remnants of the Past show, looks like you all had a blast but were busy all day. Glad to hear you are going to be on your way back home soon. I’m sure you’ve enjoyed every minute of this traveling/book signing, girlfriend meeting experience and getting to see your Mom and Dad and old friends too, but going home, especially hopefully for Thanksgiving has got to be utmost on your mind now. Thanks for taking us all along with you with updates on this blog, pictures and highlights from all the places you visited and making us feel like were were right along with you. And thanks for traveling out to us and making it possible for many of us to meet you and get our book signed, chat with you and other girlfriends we met while waiting. Have a safe enjoyable trip home, hope the weather co-operates and have a very blessed Thanksgiving!

  69. RobinLynn says:

Oh, Susan. What an incredible piece of Heaven you have right here on Earth in this little corner of the world. I loved visiting Martha’s Vineyard when I was on the East Coast 2 years ago, but Cambria has always been my “special place”. It is where I spent a lot of my birthday weekends. Thank you for sharing your home/office with us girlfriends. I was blessed to meet you and Joe at the book signing at Strawberry Patches in Bakersfield. Our girlfriend Suzanne and her team did an INCREDIBLE job. I really wanted to go to the Remnants of the Past show but knew I would not be able to stand that long to meet you. I hope you enjoyed your WingNuts or are you saving them for the trip home? Wishing you and Joe a safe trip back to your MV home. There’s no place like home! Love to you from my little nest in Orangevale, CA. Blessings, Robin

    • sbranch says:

I hid them from myself, in my drawer, to pack for the front seat of the Fine Romance Van! xoxo

      • Oh. My. Those Wingnuts! I was lucky enough to get a bag of them from Robin too. Bill came by the store to gather the champagne glasses the day after the party and I opened my bag and shared some with him (he’d worked so hard it was the least I could do). Right then and there we decided I needed to look into selling them in the store. They are a little sweet, a little salty and a whole lot delicious. You and Joe are going to love them – do share he’s worked hard too!

        • sbranch says:

Well, don’t think for a moment that I didn’t dip into them for a taste! Of course I did — but then I thought, too good for “every day” we are going to want them in the car, and I hid them from us, in the saved car-food department of my drawer. 🙂 Joe? OK!

  70. Maria in Long Beach, CA says:

Susan, can I run away to the central coast and work for you…for FREE?! I’ll bring my 19 year old son(who loves the outdoors and says he wants to be a writer). 😉
This was yet another beautiful post. Meeting you Sunday was such a thrill! And your booth was so beautiful! Any chance of getting more of the “Truly Great” bags? All my friends are oohing and ahhing over them. I checked your site and there weren’t any.
I also think that a smaller version of Petey and Jack would make great Christmas ornaments 🙂
And finally…while I love seeing the roses, I’m ready for some snow and Martha’s Vineyard!
Continued safe travels to you and Joe(who truly is a doll) 🙂 <3

    • sbranch says:

We’re going Maria, and from what I hear, there should be lots of snow back east this year. I’ll ask Kellee about the bags … not sure if we’ll get them or not.

  71. Maria M. says:

Such a great look into what goes on behind the scenes! I feel *I* need a vacay just after reading all the work that has gone into the studio, the gardens, and then the SB brand. Your team is to be commended for pulling it all together. And what a job you all have when the book shipments arrive–yikes! That being said, I can see the warmth and friendship you share in California… a fabulous place to “work”.
I bid you and Joe travel mercies as you begin heading east again, and wish all the girlfriends a great time as they find you along the way at the book signings.

  72. Shannon (Pennsylvania) says:

This is such a delightful post. Loved your description of your CA home…a “crunchy vintage double wide with faux paneling and lineolum”! It made me think back to the first home hubby and I shared. I was 19, he was 20, it was 1966, and he was just back from serving with the First Air Cav in Vietnam. We got married in August, two weeks after he returned home. He was assigned to the 82nd Airborne at Fort Bragg, NC, so shortly after our wedding we packed our ratty old car with wedding gifts and a Sears catalog and sat off for Fayetteville, NC. Sparrows in a hurricane…that was us! We found and rented our very own crunchy vintage SINGLE wide, complete with the aforementioned faux paneling and lineolum and smelling strongly of mildew and sauerkraut…and we were in heaven. Here we are, 47 years later, and I would not change that time of our lives for anything in the world. Anyway..favorite pics in this post…Joe contemplating the spot where the garden will go (honey, are you sure this is a good idea?) and the one of Petey and mini Jack. Love how they’re eyeing each other! They were made to be best buddies, although Jack looks just a tad apprehensive!

  73. LynnMarie says:

I just got back from the dentist and was not looking forward to the housecleaning that was on my agenda for the rest of today and LUCKY ME when I checked my FB I saw a new blog post was up. I immediately made myself comfortable and enjoyed every picture and every word. The show looked absolutely lovely and I was envious of everyone that got to come visit your booth. So now I am going to head on over to the on-line store and order myself some goodies. Thanks so much for all the inspiration you give to us “girlfriends”!

  74. Rosemary says:

First of all, there was a minor snafu with my order of the 2 beads..MV and Girlfriends…but the lovely people in your pictures today have been over-the-top
gracious and helpful to get it straightened out. I mean CUSTOMER SERVICE to the max…so helpful. I know you know that, but I just want to tell you from experience.
Years ago♥, when you were in Wichita, KS for a book-signing, we met you and enjoyed our every minute there! I cannot imagine how ready you will be to get on the ferry to MV soon. Not many people would have given of themselves across the country as you have. It is just remarkable! I, for one of a million, appreciate you so much. It is so fun to see the California operation and the wonderful people who work for you there. I think that would be a great place to work!
Those roses! Had to pick my Queen Elizabeth roses before the freeze at 27* the other night. They just get more beautiful as they open…pink.
So, travel safely and park the van for awhile when you get home. It will seem good, and you can have Thanksgiving at home? Hope so. Blessings to you.

    • sbranch says:

I love Queen Elizabeth roses, the prettiest pink … I should plant some on the island next year. Thank you for the compliment for our Customer Service “department” 🙂 — I read it out loud to the girls and they loved it too. It’s been a wonderful trip, but it will be good to be home. xoxo

  75. Nina says:

Hi Sue I just love this post! Seeing your little cottage on the west coast is lovely! Thought you might like to know we have them here in England too! But we call them Park homes. I absolutely LOVE the picket fence garden too!

Well its been a while since I’ve commented but I wanted you to know I have been following you all the way on this book signing trip (starting of course with the first one my sister, BF and I came to on MV. It is so exciting catching up with the girlfriends and seeing all the wonderful photo’s!

Also I have news around a year ago I wrote on your blog telling you we were having to leave our beautiful barn home & downsize, I was heartbroken at the time but you were so encouraging not only here on your blog but through your books etc. Well today I have news! We are moving again!! But this time its because we want too not because we have too!
We move Dec 7th and I am soooo excited! Our new home has a wonderful established garden with apple, pear, plum & greengage trees and loads of bushes & flowers. I can’t wait till they all come through it will be like receiving little surprizes!
Well must go now got start packing! Loved the little “hint” of thanksgiving photo at the end of your blog by the way! xxxx

    • sbranch says:

Of course you would call them Park homes, because you are so darling and can’t help but come up with pretty names for everything! Ohhh, Nina, I’m so excited about your new place. I think the trees are really more important than the house! To have an old tree — that’s the luckiest thing. The spring bloom will be gorgeous. Happy decorating!

      • Nina says:

O Bless you! Thank you Susan, trees are very important to me too! I am known to my family as the tree hugger!
I am so looking forward to decorating my favourite colour is red so there will be lots & lots of that! xxxx

  76. Linda says:

I just LOVE your blogs! I click on them every day to see if you have written anything new and then read every single word and look at every single flower, book, quilt, animal, “Joe projects,” decorating, etc.–just can’t get enough! I’m a friend of Debbie V there in SLO. Remember her? Therefore, I know the area where you are living when in CA. A beautiful place. Thanks so much for all your efforts to entertain and thrill us. Thanks, too, for all the hard work of your helpers! Next blog may be in the snow–or a road trip back to the snow!

  77. Christine says:

Looks like a wonderful show! I am sure you are ready to get home to the most familiar but we are having amazing weather here in California. Enjoy the roses while you can but don’t wait too long as the cross country drive can get very bad!
Again, loved seeing you in Pasadena!
You put a smile on my face and in my heart every time I read your books, your blog, your Willards.. Thanks from the bottom of my heart!

  78. Heidi says:

I love seeing your studio and all of the helping hands (and paws!) that go with it! Like Santa’s workshop only better. 🙂 I just want to say how much my granddaughter is enjoying the ducky on wheels that I bought her (and I see that Kitty made). When Anelie comes to Grammy’s house, (she’s almost 2 now) she takes ducky for a walk and I’m just bursting with smiles and love as she and ducky go pattering and clunking down the hallway. Old-fashioned toys are just the best!!! ♥

    • sbranch says:

That’s so nice to hear … I read it to Kellee so she can tell her talented mom! Thanks Heidi!

      • Elaine in Toronto says:

Kitty, I bought the Holstein cow as a welcome baby gift for my friends new little grandson. New daddy is an engineer and was quite impressed with the fact it was a wooden toy. It was also a nod to this little one’s rural roots in Poland, two generations ago.

        • sbranch says:

The cow started it all … if you have my Christmas book, look at the title page … there’s a baby pulling a cow on a string — I asked Kitty if she could make me one (because she’s amazing with wood!) — and she did!

          • Elaine in Toronto says:

Hi Susan, yes I have both your Christmas books – the big and the little one and I’m familiar with your drawing. Nice to hear the story behind the creation of the toy. I almost kept it because my parents had a farm in Holstein, Ontario and when I saw it, it brought back special memories. Thanks.

          • sbranch says:

Black and white cows are as pretty as black and white kitties — and look really good in the snow! xo

  79. ElFe says:

    Dearest Susan,
Loved looking at your studio! I’m so glad you didn’t take “pristine pictures” when everything was in place–it looks so much more inviting the way it is. It put me right there, as part of the action; AND it looks just like my house when I have a project going! (I’m always a little suspicious of people who show me a perfectly ordered space and try to tell me that a lot gets accomplished there!)
I am so ready for you to be at your home across the country–with the snow and more snow–getting ready for the holidays. I just love this time of year and tend to hurry it along as soon as possible. We don’t get a lot of snow here in Oregon; but the gray skies are more helpful than our Arizona sunshine was. So thank you, sweet girl, for sharing all that can be and positive and uplifting–and the wonderful world you’ve created. You are a treasure.
    ElFe

    • sbranch says:

I feel the same way … it’s like that quote “If a happy kitchen is a messy kitchen then my kitchen is delirious!” xoxo Thank you ElFe!

      • Janet in Rochester says:

I have one in my Quotes journal along these lines that I love – from Phyllis Diller. So cute. “If your house is really a mess and a stranger comes to the door, greet her with “Who could have done this? We have no enemies…” LOL!!

I don’t remember where I first saw this – I wonder if it was in one of your books, Sue ?

  80. Bobbie P says:

    Susan,
Thank you for the beautiful blog, always a delight and brings a smile to my face!!! I loved the tour of the Studio, interesting, cozy and beautiful!!! Everything grows beautifully out there.
I love the tea tin and towels. a must on my Christmas list or maybe before.
I’m still ready the book and loving it!! I’m saving it and enjoying every moment. Thank you for taking us along. You are the best and really bring a smile on this girl’s face (lady maybe) .
Have a safe trip home and say hello to Joe..he seems like such a nice guy too.
    xxxx 🙂

  81. Teresa says:

What a wonderful post, again! I had asked my local library to order your book and they agreed. The book is on my account as a “hold” so I know it has been ordered, but I have been waiting for what seems like forever. I guess I should follow up with them, but I don’t even know if they would know what the delay is. Do you have any advice?

    • sbranch says:

I think now would be a very good time to check back with them — we’ve been sold out of books for a while, but they came back in last week, and now probably the stores and the distributors all have them.

  82. ElFe says:

Forgot something–speaking of Thanksgiving, would you make us a Thanksgiving bookmark sometime when you’re not doing 7,000 other things? If you did one already I must have missed it; so if that’s the case, could you offer it again?
    Love/Hugs,
    ElFe

  83. Susan, Susan, Susan…..
I think that was one of the best posts ever!!!! What you have done with that place, amazes me! The gardens, the painting, the work! Isn’t it wonderful that your Joe has been so supportive and always helpful with your projects. He is such a big part of the whole thing! Hurray for Joe. I enjoyed this post so much, and now have to go back and read it again, then I might have to go shopping at your store, and get some beads, and ………….. more. How do you keep up? You are an inspiration, girlfriend! xxoo. JO

    • sbranch says:

Yes, I think part of what we recognized in each other was that we would help … just didn’t know how much at the time! Keeping it up because it’s fun! 🙂

  84. Carilyn Wolski says:

Hello Susan! What a beautiful post of your gorgeous home in California!!! Thank you for having an “Open House” for all of us blog Girlfriends to see inside and sneek-a-peek of your West Coast resisdence! So, quaint! Your white picket fence garden is divine, your Gardenia is so pretty, and your roses are so delightful!!! It is an instant pick-me-up, as the weather here in Dearborn, MI is cold, windy, and yesterday we had a dusting of snow covering the leaves on the lawn, like frosting on a cake, until the sunshine melted it gone!!!! Please advise me on how to print out the FREE apron pattern, because when I measured the 2″ square on the computer screen, I had a 4 1/4″ square. I’d love to make a few as Christmas gifts, but am nervous to go ahead and print out the pattern, since my on-sscreen measurement was larger. Thank you so much for your help, and wishing you well each and every day!!!! P.S. Do you think Jack is getting jealous of the two studio cats? The one with the birthmark could be his cousin!!!!!

    • sbranch says:

Just print the page that shows the square and measure what’s printed to make sure that’s the right size. I think it will print properly to size — our screens all show things differently. Jack doesn’t know about the studio cats and I’m doing my best to keep it that way! 🙂

      • Carilyn Wolski says:

The pattern printed out fine. (The “printed” square measured exactly 2″.) So excited! Can’t wait to make one or two for gifts using up my “stash” fabric! You truly are my Creative Angel…a free sewing pattern…….such a special gift!!!! Thank you very mush Susan!!! Nightynight.

        • sbranch says:

You’ll have fun with it. What I like about it is that the way it’s cut, it gives everyone, even the waist-challenged such as myself, a curve. 🙂

  85. Karen says:

Oh Susan you and Joe work so hard! You have such a wonderful group of friends that work hard with you too. They are awesome(of course just like you and Joe!) Everything looks so beautiful. I love A Fine Romance by the way. I can see why everyone wants a copy. Thank you for all this bright sunshine you bring into my life.

  86. Ann says:

Loved seeing your CA home. I have always admired your picket fence garden since I first saw a pic in your early books. Have a safe trip home to the Vineyard. It’s winter in the Northeast!

  87. Cindy says:

Can I just say how blessed I was to see your topsey-turvey kitchen in California??? I like a clean, pleasant place as much as the next person, but somehow it was refreshing to see your house looking….oh, I don’t know…..so like mine when I get home from a long trip….. 🙂

  88. Be still my heart….daffodils, gardenias, roses, oh my! And in November! Your CA home looks wonderful as any home you live in would. Love your new CA kitties. Adorable! I enjoyed seeing you honored in Romantic Homes. I squealed as I turned the page and saw it (and sweet Jack!). I said, “Yup, that’s my buddy, Susan Branch, wouldn’t you know?”. Enjoy your trip back East. Savor the western warmth and bring a little with you along the way. xo

  89. krista says:

Hi Susan: Three of us journeyed up the Central Cali Coast to the Madonna Inn last weekend–it was glorious. We saw you and Joe (also signing books!!) and the Fine Romance van and shopped in your store. Since our books were already signed, we didn’t stand in line in the hot sun to meet you. You must have had a very long day because we saw you and Joe again in the Copper Penny that night, maybe with the lucky person that won the drawing to have dinner with you! It was a really fun weekend. The Coast welcomed us with the most gorgeous weather. Thanks for sharing these photos of your studio and the people who help make it all possible. Krista

    • sbranch says:

We had dinner with the winners in the coffee shop at the Madonna Inn … is that called the Copper Penny? I never knew that! LOL! I’m so glad you were there — yes, it was quite a wonderful weekend and many ways, weather too!

  90. Rose Huskey says:

    Good Morning,

The lovely quilts that make their way into your postings are a delight to see. Have you ever considered doing a book on them? It would be a treat for all of us – and certainly an inspiration for the quilters among your girl friends.
You bring much joy to those of us who love both your work and words.
    Rose

    • sbranch says:

Ohhh I’d love to. The colors in these old quilts have always been my inspiration for my watercolors. Thank you Rose.

  91. Jane F. says:

Oh, Susan! What a great blog!! And Petey and “little” Jack~~!! What a great team they make! You and Joe have worked soo hard to make two homes absolutely beautiful! What a joy for the rest of us and an inspiration beyond words!! Good job, you two!! I was so hoping to catch you on your dash across the country, and almost thought I would come to OKC, but it would mean leaving dear Gene and overnight is not in the cards just yet. He is doing well but still needs a lot of my help. And I’m glad to give it!!! We just passed two corners on projects DONE!! (I’ll DM you soon with details–which you do not have time to read!) lol My dear friend Ann (of English Church!) is unable to come, too — the wedding business just keeps going and going!! We talk about you together all the time! All good stuff!! The joy you spread!! Your ears will be burning when you pass through/near Arkansas on your return trip!! And even though we didn’t get to see you this trip, we are all here always kindred spirits inspiring each other each and every day. You are sooo right!! Who needs Normal? This summer has been anything but, and yet wonderful doors are opening all the time!! I can’t wait to see what will happen next!! Blessings as you travel!! I know we are going to see snippets of little pockets of our great country as you wind your way across the wide open spaces; hill and dale on your way back to sweet Martha’s Vineyard and your dear kitties!! I’m sorry to miss you both … but I do understand. Life is what happens when we are busy having fun! I’m looking forward to the drive, I’m sure it will be just the way you wrote it! Love to Ann and Gene!

  92. My goodness, Sue, I am feeling so tired for both you and Joe! I hope you can come home now and put up your feet and relax back on the Vineyard…..I am in New England and it is nice and cold and feeling like Thanksgiving is on its way ~ I loved the article in Yankee Magazine! and love every ounce of enthusiasm and wonderful effort you make letting us into your world ~ I bought 5 more copes of A Fine Romance for Christmas presents, had my library order a copy, and our local small bookstore as well…..What a little jewel it is ~ full of delight, love and generosity ~ You and Joe are both really special and I love feeling that I am sharing in your adventures! Thank you ~ Sandy

    • sbranch says:

Sandy! My guardian angel! Thank you so much! xoxo We’re on our way … I think it will be a beautiful trip home.

That’s us in picture 39 at the Remnants of the Past show (behind the lady in red)- My husband and I waiting to make our purchase… He made me buy my own lamb (now he says he needs to find a cast iron border collie:) – so now we have two :)… Beautiful booth- such a joy to see “everything Susan” all in one place!!!! Thank you!

    • sbranch says:

LOL, cast iron border collie would be perfect to keep your lamb herded up close to itself! 🙂 Thank you both Mitzie!

  94. Sandy says:

Oh Susan, I know it’s a commandment and all that, but I can’t help myself……I COVET YOUR LIFE!!!!! What a beautiful home you have in California. Looks like you found the pot o’ gold. Thanks for the tour and have a safe trip home.

    • sbranch says:

LOL Sandy! Don’t forget I don’t linger on the part where the shipper delivers the products to the wrong address, or where we find tiny holes from something chewing on the doublewide! I don’t linger on them because the roses are so much more fun! Thank you, going home the slow way!

  95. Willa says:

Oh yes it did…..my heart “sang” when I saw a new blog entry in my inbox!! Terrified of dentist I had an appointment this morning; I was so brave, BUT my reward for being such a good girl was not a new toothbrush and a sticker – NO! It was coming home and finding this wonderful note from you, one of my BFsF, so I quickly made myself a cup of tea and sat down in my favorite chair next to one of my three favorite cats and read it “from cover to cover!” Thank you Susan for being my present today!! Safe travels home.

  96. Heartsdesire says:

Your California home looks so cozy, especially with those two adorable studio kitties. And what a staff you have. How lucky you are to have all these responsible people around you, looking after things when you’re not there. The roses are beautiful, and I can’t imagine anything as awesome as a gardenia in your front yard. The fragrance from these beauties is fabulous, I could almost smell it. I’ve loved reading about your time on the road, but I can hardly wait for you to start back to the east coast so we can see the adventures of Kitty Girl and Jack. Also, your house looks sooo beautiful with snow around it, all decked out for Christmas.

  97. Debby Suovanen says:

I love your cats! Where do you find such beautiful babies?! Well, you told us the story of Jack. Now we got to meet Sasha and Sammy and they are just beautiful! Can you tell that I’m a cat lover?! It was so nice to see your California place and to meet your “family” out west. I looooove the birdhouse in your garden! Did Joe make that for you? Well, I would love to see more of your house and the Central Coast of California, but I think it’s time for you and Joe to get on the road for home. You’ve given so much to your girlfriends, and we have loved it all!! Now it’s time to go back to your “Winter Wonderland” and the babies that are missing you back home. Thanks so much for sharing all that you do, but you need to feed your soul, too.

  98. Kelly H-Y says:

Oh my goodness … can I work for you too?! I can be your Northwest branch! 🙂 Hard work and creativity all rolled up into one … love it! Wonderful, inspiring post! Congrats on your HUGE book success!!

I had to have surgery once when I was in my 20’s. They gave me this twilight stuff that made me drowsy but talkative. It would have been a perfect youtube home-from-the-dentist kind of video. I looked up at my husband who was walking behind the hospital bed rolling me down the hall and holding my hand and talked about my dream. Of having a sewing store, where all my girlfriends would come and sit and sew all day together. It would have a TV where we could watch General Hospital every day (and this was before the heady days of Luke and Laura in the department store!) and big comfy arm chairs, wallpaper and cute curtains that I made and a store kitty. Now my studio is a little bit like that, although we’ve weaned ourselves off of General Hospital and do more than sew. But it has that old time dream feeling!

      • Mary in Phoenix says:

Mary and I decided we would come work at your studio in a ♥beat. Just not sure what to do with our husbands, kids, homes, etc. Luke & Laura … too funny! I remember those days of watching GH during breaks with my work girlfriends 🙂

  99. Sylvia in Seattle says:

It’s been great fun seeing the before and after shots of the California ranchito, the scene at Remnants of the Past, and the crew of excellent amigos who do the grunt work necessary to maintain all and everything.
I like the suggestion for a quilt book by yourself and wonder what you might come up with. One can get lost in the old fabrics and designs. My collection of old scrap pieces are my muse in the sewing room.
Wishing you safe travels as you wend your way back to the other coast.

    • sbranch says:

The best thing about doing a quilt book, for me, would be the colors … I love the colors of old quilts … something so Beatrix Potter about them!

      • Sylvia in Seattle says:

I took pictures today of an old (1941) crib sized kind of tattered quilt with 12 embroidered Peter Rabbit scenes all bordered in blue sashing. I just love looking at it. I found it some years ago in one of my antique mall meanderings. I will send them to you if they turn out okay for inspiration on that quilt book project :-).

  100. Hi Susan,
I live in Southern California in Ojai where it gets too hot to have roses that beautiful this time of year….so yours are woner-filled to gaze at! I can even smell them. Are you going to put some sheep in your California barn? …. just a crazy thought! Love your BOOK and story of you and JOE and The Romance! When my husband retires I soooo look forward to having a little time with him and living some of the dreams we have had together but been-too-busy-raising children to make come true – I like it when you remind us “it’s never too late to make a dream come true!”
    Love, from your girlfriend,
    Dixie

    • sbranch says:

Never too late Dixie! xoxo Ojai is so beautiful too!

    • Jane F. says:

Hi Dixie: One of the Girlfriends, here! I love Ojai. Used to visit often in 1980’s. My husband’s mother lived there. I adored the tea shop. Is it still there? The first time I had “real” English tea!! We moved to Arkansas in 1991, so he could paint here. Lots of natural beauty, everywhere!! But special love for the “Old California” feel of Ojai and Santa Barbara, San Diego, central coast — the missions, etc. Was a great chapter in my life!! I’ve been blessed with lots of them! Grew up in Boston area and summers at shore and Cape Cod, so Susan’s Martha’s Vineyard life has special meaning to me, too!! xo
