birthday

wishes

So many things  to be grateful for and I thought today would be a really good day to talk about them.

my favoriteLet me first say that if I put every one of my blessings in this post, reading it would become a full time job because they pretty much go to the moon.  But I have to start somewhere!  My favorite magazines have arrived and for my own birthday present to me, I’m taking them to lunch this week.  Me and them, alone, at a corner table, with a knife to hold them open so I can eat Sesame Noodles and read at the same time.  One of my most favorite luxuries, reading all alone in restaurants (a sidewalk cafe on the Champs Elysees?  Oui!)

JackAnd him, my shadow, he’s more than a luxury, he is my must-have.  And the very best present I could ask for, he and Girl have been playing this last week, chasing each other up and down the stairs, you can hear their feet running back and forth upstairs, ambushing each other, jumping off the beds.  It’s wonderful!  So good for Girl and just what I was hoping for her when I brought Jack home.  I hope it lasts. Jack is 2 1/2 years old and this is a first!

sunrisesSpring has come to Martha’s Vineyard!  The early morning light is exquisite.  Pristine, fresh, clean, and a miracle if ever I saw one. Especially after this winter!

forsythiaI have huge amounts of gratitude for Mrs Bowditch who lived in our house from 1949 until 1980 and was so good about planting for spring bloom. I got to meet her once.  She’s been my inspiration.I hope she knows I’m taking good care of her house for her.

come and get your happinessOur daffodils are in bloom.  Thank you!

Nature!

the walk

We have nature’s address, it’s out through the woods along a dirt path that takes us here . . . no leaves on the trees yet, but the sun is lovely and the breeze smells wonderful, and you can hear the waves.

crocus

Crocus! Pure miracles.  First there is snow and then there are crocus!

gifts

I’m grateful for talented Kellee who made me this kitty last year. xoxo

kids say the darndest things

And for little children who write me beautiful letters with borders.  Thank you Little Children! xoxo

diaries

I’m grateful for these, my own research department, my diaries . . . Yes, I know I’ve been MIA from our dear blog, and I’ve missed you!  But every time I’ve tried to do an update (and I have tried!), I think “Oh, just let me add this one more little thing to my new book and THEN I’ll go do a new post” . . . that’s when I fall into “the zone” and have to say help I’ve fallen and I can’t get up.  But no one comes, so what can I do?

research!

I can’t save myself, and honestly, I really don’t want to.  I like it in there.  I’m driven in the best possible way.  I wake up and RUN to my paper and pen before all my morning fresh-from-dreamland thoughts disappear.  I have 418 pages of our new book written, Girlfriends.  Of course, probably 50% of it is what English people would call “a crapjob” ~ but that’s OK, first I have to get the whole entire thing down on paper, and we’ll worry about crap removal later on.  I promise, it will be distilled, only the juicy bits will be left when I get done.  It’s almost my birthday and  I feel so grateful to have this passion.

Daddio and Joey-0

And then this . . . digging through my photos, I found this one.   I am SO grateful for these two cutie-pot-pie Leos in my life, the Blog Daddy, John Patrick Stewart Jr. (hi Dad!) and my partner in crime, Joseph Buckminster Hall.

little family

And I’m so grateful I was ever a part of this group of little people. ♥

Gladys Taber

I love sharing my birthday with Gladys Taber.  I love being born on the same day as someone who was a light to the world.

Stillmeadow

I’m excited that Joe and I will be at the Friends of Gladys Taber meeting in Connecticut in June — I’ll be speaking and signing A Fine Romance and we get to tour her house Stillmeadow for the very first time!

High school

And right after that, I come home to this . . . these are my high school girlfriends (last fall in California) . . . and they are ALL coming to stay in my house for four days in June! I’m grateful I have this to look forward to!  We have stories, we laugh, we have fun!  They are like sisters to me.  I have some house fluffing to do!  (And with my “passion” in full bloom plus old man winter to sweep out the door, this house needs it! 🙂

I’m thankful for this, because this means YOU.

girlfriendsCounting the blessings of my last year, one of the best of all was going out to meet so many of our Girlfriends.  Look how cute Lucy and Ethel are!  I’m telling you, this was a ball!

flowers

in CAA Fine Romance was such a blessing ~ it took me here  (both of those horse pictures are still on the door of my studio, one from Jessie and one from Sydney) . . . and it took us all here   To Beatrix Potter’s house in the Lake District.  M A G I C A L , I almost can’t believe we were there.

A fine romance at Castle CottageAnd tomorrow, on my actual birthday, I get to go to lunch with my best girlfriends here on Martha’s Vineyard ~ flowermaking me grateful for a Spring Birthday ~ the perfect excuse for a girlfriend lunch.   And then we’re all going to the nursery together!  Our nurseries close in the winter, so this will be a treat, our first visit this year!  Sometimes my California girlfriends wonder why I would want to live in a place that has such a cold winter, and this is part of the reason.  It’s  thrilling to go to the nursery for the first time, seeing the first flowers, smelling the warm sun on grass.  It’s a miracle every year.  The more miracles, the better.

To remember on your Birthday

And this weekend, I’m going to write us a new Willard!  Oh yeah, I think you deserve a birthday present too . . .  make sure your addresses are all up to date.  It won’t go out for about a week and a half, I’ll be sure to let you know.

magicOne more wish, my birthday wish for you is that you go through your days gracefully growing more beautiful and wise, never missing a sunset or the opportunity to count your blessings, I hope that’s how we stay forever young. xoxo Love you . . . Wham, *❊ BAM,✱ whoosh,✶* sparkles *♫*✱•*¨*•.☆.♪•*¨❋**••*¨ ✱*•★.* ♪* ✱ •*¨✸*•.★.♫•*¨☆✱*•*♥. . .  feel that?

Happy Birthday, Susan! Have fun with your magazines and girlfriends and your trip to the nursery. Sounds like fun! Tomorrow my two daughters are taking me on a trip to celebrate my 75th. I’m absolutely thrilled to reach this milestone and to have this time with them. They had planned for us to have High Tea on the Queen Mary, but we had to cancel that. (The Grand Prix is in Long Beach this weekend.) So instead we are going to Corona Del Mar and will have tea there for our get-a-way. My real B-day is Monday. They are both teachers so this week-end is better than next. (Easter) I’m so blessed!

    Many blessings on your Birthday!
    Nancy (from Bakersfield)

    • sbranch says:

Oh Nancy, how lovely, I should have known you were an April baby when I met you. Yes, stay out of Long Beach this weekend, but so many other wonderful places to choose from. Say hello to your girls for me! Happy Birthday!

We celebrated my husband’s birthday today with two lovely granddaughters & daughter & finance…plus chocolate cake. 11. KAREN from Charleston SC says:

Oh Susan, Your photo of Beatrix Potter’s home across the road from her Hilltop work home evokes so many happy memories for me!! It was almost a year ago my hubby and I visited this grand site, all green with splashes of white sheep all over the hillsides surrounding Lake Windemere. We thought we had been transported to heaven; such serene surroundings!!!

My hubby’s birthday was 4/4/44, which always brought chuckles from the most serious of faces. Sadly, he passed away just six weeks after we arrived back home from our England Trip. However, the trip and the voyage home on the Queen Mary 2 was all he could talk about to anyone he could persuade to linger in his hospital room long enough to hear his stories of human English angels who were so kind and who came to our rescue time and again with our luggage, etc.

Thank you once again for persuading us to take the plunge and travel on “The Queen”. It was the best memory he could have kept with him until the end of his life. He loved everything about that magnificent ship!! I only wish he could have read “A Fine Romance”!! He was a romantic at heart, so would have loved every single page!!!

Thank you for the joy you keep bring me!!
    Karen Ruth

    • sbranch says:

Oh Karen, I’m so sorry to hear your husband is gone. I remember you planning this trip, how wonderful that you were able to make that amazing memory together. This is one reason I refer to A Fine Romance as Our Book, now it can be a sort of memory book for you too. Life is a voyage in and of itself isn’t it? Sending big love . . . xoxoxo

  12. Delores Berg says:

    Birthday greetings from Sweden!
My daffodils are also blooming and spring has certainly arrived here in the far north!
Thank you for your inspiring blog, it is a joy to read! (and gives me a glimpse into your life in the US)
I wish you much joy in the upcoming year!
This year my birthday book for friends is ‘A Fine Romance’ . Thank you for creating such a marvellous book!

  13. Margie says:

Happy Birthday Susan!!! I truly hope you have a wonderful day. Enjoy your lunch and the visit to the nursery. Our nurseries close for a period in the winter too. I met one of my girlfriends at one of our favorite nurseries on Thursday and we were like two kids in a candy store. Not only do they have flowers but they have the most adorable gift shop so of course we had to spend time there too. Here in Ohio they say we are about 3 weeks behind in the growing season. I have to tell you I received your new book A Fine Romance from my husband on the first day of spring. I just love it and after such a long winter the book is perfect. The drawings and pictures are just breathtaking. Thank you so much and can hardly wait for your next one to arrive that you have been working so hard on but thank you for sneaking some time in to blog because I so enjoy reading them.

  14. Lisa Jorgensen says:

Happy Birthday Susan!! You are a “light to the world” also, and we are all the better for it.
What a great photo of your Dad and Joe! Hope you have the most beautiful day and year, and all your birthday wishes come true.

I think Mrs. Bowditch would totally approve of how you are taking care of her/ your beautiful house, not to mention the happiness and laughter that flows out of the doors and windows. Imagine what she would think of Jack and Girl romping up and down the stairs. It’s perfect!
Have a quiet alone Birthday and a loud MV girlfriend party. You must have a balance after all.
Please hug your diaries for us and steady on as you write your newest book.

Zing-Zing!! That’s how I felt when I saw the picture of Alex’s sweet little handwritten letter with the chicken border. How could you know it was his masterpiece and the most he had written that year! I just sent your book to my mom and wrote her a message about the note you wrote to my class just 4 days (!!!) before you set sail!! I keep the note in my desk drawer with the pencils and pens and markers and lunch count tallies. Thank you for seeing the beauty in handwritten notes, in flowers in bloom, is timeless tunes, in quiet places and in celebrations! Thank you for your gratitude everyday!
    Slainte and Happy, Happy Birthday!!

  22. April Anderson says:

Have a wonderful birthday, Susan! Mine’s next week on the 18th. 🙂

  23. sylvia Faye says:

Susan your posts always brings that little bubble of joy into my heart. So many people find life a drudge and you are still the ‘little girl’ who finds wonders in just the everyday things of life….Jack, flowers, letters, girlfriends, your parents, family, walks with that ‘special man’ in your life, good homemade food, and most of all it puts a spring in the step of each of us, your blog, girlfriends.
My father’s birthday was in April (17th) and I loved him so dearly as you do your father. Maybe being born in the spring lasts a lifetime in ones heart and soul.
May tomorrow be warm and sunny as your own disposition. I will remember you in my rosary and pray for abundant graces to wing their way to you. Do blow out all the candles and thanks for this post and looking forward to Willard.
With a joyful heart, bon soir!

Happy Birthday Susan! Have a wonderful day. Our daughter, whose birthday is April 9th, was expecting her fourth child on April 12th. She already has three gorgeous little boys, 7, 4 and 2 1/2 but her beautiful daughter decided to come a couple of days early and was born April 10th. Three little boys and now a little girl. We are ‘over the moon’ happy with her arrival. I’ll think of you tomorrow and hope that you are having a perfectly spectacular day. You certainly enrich mine every time I read you blog. Best wishes.

Happy Happy Birthday Susan. Your energy and enthusiasm is infectious. It is finally spring here! The gold finches and chickadees are chirping away and I am going out to rake and maybe by some pansies. Love their little faces. My little kitty (his name is Cheddar Cheese) is positively boiling over with spring fever! He has been ricocheting all over the house from window to window meowing and yowling so loudly. I have a little harness for him and let him outside for the first time since last fall. He was so darn cute…all bluster inside and then a total whip once he stepped out the door. There are tons of chimpmunk holes in the ground and he sticks his paw in and it goes all the way up to his shoulder…so funny. Enjoy your day and once again, thank you for being you. Your friend, Mary Brehm

Happy, happy birthday, Susan! I was thrilled to see you and your high school girlfriends…there were six of us as well, from eighth grade on. One has passed away from cancer, one is somewhat AWOL, but four of us are headed for Bermuda on a fabulous cruise in June, our fourth “Great Girlfriend Get-away.” Aren’t we fortunate to have that continuity of friendships in our lives? Those friendships are what sustain us through the highs and lows that life throws in our pathways, and we are so much the better for the strength and love they give us on our journey.

Wishing you a wonderful day with your friends – – I have counted you a friend for decades now, even though we have never met 🙂 We have moved often over the years with my husband’s work, and in homes from the west to east coast you have been painted on the walls in quotes in the laundry room, painted little bottles of perfume with your quotes in my dressing area, and even a whole wall in a breakfast room with bees and beehives with the whole scene of “a wrathful race, but Oh Honey” page from one of your books. I will count you in my blessings today, I continue to love the inspiration you share, so…THANKS Girlfriend!! And Happy Birthday!!

Dear hero of mine, North Star, natural navigator/gravitator (such a word?) to that which is good and worthy; a shining beacon; a veritable lamppost shedding light into the soul where it has temporarily dimmed and a gentle yet guiding force whose very presence in this world makes it a kinder, gentler and more compassionate existence.

To your parents, a heartfelt thank you for bringing you into this world and providing you with such a hearty foundation.

May you have more fun than human beings should be allowed to have and may it rival that marvelous day which will live in infamy when you met the Backyard Beatles in their knickers!

    Happiest of Birthdays Dear Susan!

Happy Birthday, Susan! Your birthday wish to us is beautiful. Brought tears to my eyes this stormy morning in Minnesota.
PS Saw my first purple crocus yesterday morning! Yes, indeedy, Spring is here!

Happy Birthday to you, dear Susan! And Happy Spring! Your last paragraph is truly powerful — a beautiful and memorable blessing.

  71. Mary Beth McGrath says:

Happy Birthday, Susan! Spring is here in mainland Massachusetts , but no forsythia in bloom yet. I am counting the days until our first trip to open the cottage on beautiful Prince Edward Island! Have you ever been there? You’d love it. As an added bonus, we just heard that Prince Charles and Camilla will be there during our trip! So nice of them to take our schedule into consideration. My first “royal sighting” on PEI was Her Majesty when I was almost 12. Have seen all but Princess Anne, however I’ve had many encounters with Anne of Green Gables, who is PEI royalty! Enjoy your day.

    • sbranch says:

I have never been there! Isn’t that terrible! Must work harder on that!

      • Sherry Palla says:

That’s where Anna of Green Gables was written, wasn’t it??? Loved those books!

      • Mary Beth McGrath says:

It is a magical place. To even the score, I have never been to the Vineyard! Let me know if you need PEI info – been going every summer since I was 5.

  72. Michele Gavaletz says:

Susan, you are a national treasure. I hope you have the happiest of birthdays. You truly deserve it. After reading all the comments, and seeing all the joy and happiness you bring to all of us, your birthday is the perfect time to let you know how important you are to all of us and the connection we feel toward you. Thank you for being a part of our lives. Have a great time with your high school chums – I get together with mine as much as we can. There is nothing like the childhood bonds we share!

  73. Michele Perkins says:

    Glorious, Daffodil, Birthday Wishes Susan!

It’s a fabulous day here in So. Woodstock with the sun shining and the birds busy having breakfast and feeling the warmth of Spring that has FINALLY arrived! Have a wonderful, fun-filled day and bring home lots of goodies from the nursery. There is an open house today at a nearby nursery that I am heading for shortly and can’t wait to pick up some cheery little pansies to brighten our doorstep!

Many, Many, Warm Birthday Wishes Susan!

    Hugs, Michele

  74. Becky in the mountains of West Virginia says:

  76. Barb from Ohio says:

Happy Birthday Susan!!! Hope it’s bright and sunny on the Vineyard as it is here this morning. I’m out to clean off my flower beds today as the daffodils, crocus and tulips are trying to come up through all the dead leaves. A few other perennials are poking some leaves up through the soil, so it does feel like spring today, finally! I hope you have a wonderful day going out to lunch with the girls and find something pretty to buy at the nursery. Have a great birthday!

  77. Susan Joy says:

  79. maryb says:

happy birthday susan!! this is a dangerous time you know-when the greenhouses and garden stores put out all the plants and seeds and it’s really too early and still too chilly to plant but you can’t help yourself!! today we’re repairing birdhouses and putting out nesting material and i think we’re going to buy a bat house! 3 of our pond fish made it through the winter so all is good! have fun celebrating!! mb

    • sbranch says:

I know, it is dangerous. After years of doing it too early I made a pact with myself not to plant until June first — otherwise everything gets tattered by the winds and doesn’t grow very much anyway. It’s hard to wait! But I have a good time just cleaning up the winter debris, making the beds nice, composting and all that good stuff. Anything to be outside on a nice day.

  80. Sue Rideout from Maine says:

You speak a lot of Gladys Taber, a person I know little of. But I am very familiar with Susan Branch and let me just say, dear lady, that YOU are a light to the world. You always brighten my day and change my outlook and attitude for the better. The irony is that it may be your birthday, but we get the presents!! You are our gift.
