Hello Susan! Happy Easter to you and Joe, Girl Kitty, and Jack!!!! Your Bunny Cake Recipe sounds wonderful with a twist! We visited my 89 3/4 yr. old father over the weekend on Harsens Island, MI. The ferry ride was delightful, and the water was blue, and ice-free……finally SPRING! Gorgeous weekend, and took pictures on his dock and many freighters were going up and down the South Channel of the St. Clair River! I crocheted small carrot pouches, filled with dark chocolate eggs, and even found little (Lindt) milk chocolate-foiled cover-lambs! I cut out the little lambs you drew on the book signing name tags last summer, and it was perfect tied to the yarn, tying them up at the tops….ideal for Easter. My dad was like a little kid with that homemade carrot!!!!! Even big kids enjoy treats from the Easter Bunny!!!! Can’t wait to read the Willard, it’s like “eye candy” with a use!!!!! Thank you, early! Hope your Easter was H*A*P*P*Y !!! Take care!

It was a beautiful, peaceful, calm Easter Sunday in Overland Park, Ks. We have so much to be thankful for. I love Easter and this year for the first time ever my birthday(61st) fell on Easter Sunday & what a wonderful day it was! It is so nice to come here and visit your blog and hear good news.
Unfortunately, Palm Sunday last week was a terrible day for our community. Please remember the families who lost loved ones in that terrible shooting in Overland Park, Ks. at our local Jewish Community Center and a nearby nursing home. There is such a lovely interconnected in this community, but we are all hurting from this senseless evil act of hate done by an outsider.
I am thankful that I can come to this “happy place” to get away from sadness that life can bring. Let us all continue to do our part to shed light and love where we are planted. Thanks Susan for this bright spot. Feeling happy & sad at the same time.
    Your friend,
    Roseann Copeland

My prayers are with you and your community Roseann. That was truly hideous. I am so happy that this sick individual is removed permanently from society. I’m sorry there isn’t a way to do it before this kind of tragedy takes place. Shedding light along with you Roseann . . . xoxo beautiful beautiful Easter, the time of rebirth and renewal.

  3. Georgie says:

Hippity Hoppity Easter was WONDERFUL!!! I went early (6:30) up the see Mom at rehab to deliver her Easter basket filled with goodies. She was in bed but wide awake. Her smile lit up the room when she saw me holding it. I told her she got up early sooo many Easter mornings to hide my Easter eggs, and I wanted her to have a special surprise here away from home.

Thanks for the Easter Bunny Cake design… and that wonderful German Pancake! A true delight… as are YOU!!!

    XOXO Georgie from NJ

  4. Carol from PA says:

Easter blessings Susan! I made your carrot cake cupcakes on Easter Sunday and they were absolutely delicious! And that is without icing! I had every intention to ice them but they are so sweet and moist without. Like eating candy! And the house smelled fabulous throughout the entire day! Thank you for sharing yet another wonderful recipe!

  5. jean webb says:

Love to make this cake! I have been making it every Easter for over 30 years since I saw how to do it in a magazine way back then. My husband and son look forward to this tradition every Easter. This is a wonderful tradition that I will continue with my grandchildren too! It was alovely Easter here. I hope everyone had a beautiful time filled with family and good food. God has truly blessed us.

  6. barbara lassiter says:

My daughter hosted the family for Easter Sunday lunch after church! As a treat for her son, who is 11 and for her brother’s sons who are 2 and 4, she made an adorable coconut bunny cake. All the food was delicious and the cake was the perfect ending for the meal, adding to the general air of festivity!

  7. Renee Mumford says:

Being new here, I was gobsmacked to have had a reply only a few hours after emailing Ms. Branch, yesterday, Easter Sunday, to let her know I love her book on England. Thank you again for your reply. It was very nice of you. Easter at the Mumford’s was minus a son who has gone to live where his heart lies, in Colorado. He wanted to begin anew. The other son has just lost a girlfriend and gained back freedom and got custody of the two beagles. He pal’d around with his ancient parents yesterday. We had lamb at The Palm here in Chicago. But first my husband and I walked around Oz Park, and watched the little kids hunt for Easter eggs. I find holidays belong to children and their parents. I’m a bystander now, but do enjoy having family memories too. Glad I found this site! Take care

  8. Connie Rose Woehler says:

Happy Easter Susan! It has been absolutely beautiful here in Southern Indiana too! Thank you for letting us know about the Jingle Shells. I had the pleasure of walking the beach on Martha’s Vineyard a little over a year ago and loved those sweet yellow shells. Put some in my pocket and brought them home. They sit on top of my pot of philodendron by the coffee pot. Didn’t know they were Jingle Shells! You have made my day … again! Love your blog. It takes me back to Martha’s Vineyard each time I read it! Made your Easter Bunny cake for my son-in-law’s Easter Birthday. My grandchildren all loved Uncle Nick’s Easter Bunny Birthday Cake! It is the sweetest cake ever. Look forward each time to reading your blog and can’t wait to read a new “Willard.” I have kept all of my Willard’s over the years as they were such a treat to receive. Thank you Susan for all that you do … You are such a bright spot in this big beautiful world!

  14. Kathleen Morearty says:

    Hi Susan,

    -Kathleen

  15. Jennifer Grady says:

Just read your latest Willard–what a delightful treat! I’m a fan from way-back when. Several years back dragged my husband to a book-signing you did in Hyannis, MA. He was such a good egg he carried my entire SB book collection so you could sign them all. You were just as good as he and signed them all and a few gifts to boot! Best day ever. 🙂 We also crossed paths again in Celebrations in Falmouth and also the cute craft/stamping store in Falmouth. Fun times indeed. I work for another Boston publisher and have often thought I should be at LB doing fun stuff with SB! Your Willard this morning is like a smile in my mailbox. Thanks for continuing to spread your joy. There are folks smiling everywhere this morning because of y-o-u. Happy Tuesday!

  16. Judy Perry says:

It was so nice to find Willard in my mail box. I just returned from my morning walk and was sitting down with a cup’a Joe and needed something to read. As a Floridian, I miss northern springs. But we do have our own version. I found that my potted pineapple was producing a new fruit and the Sandhill cranes and swans are showing off their new babies. And best if all are the wonderful smells from the magnolias and gardenias.

  17. Crystal says:

Love all your notes and paintings! Yours is the only blog I read! Crystal

  18. Celeste Thurston says:

Love the book, I’m 2/3’ds through now. Love your cat with the inkblot nose. And putting “Charleston” as a must see on my garden and house bucket list. I am a singer, jazz being my favorite, so much of your book echo’s with my life. I’m out in as many gardens as I can find to help others learn how-to in my home city of Baltimore. Community Garden’s are the buzz word this Spring- so happy it’s finally sprung here as well.

    • sbranch says:

You will LOVE Charleston … it pops back into my mind constantly — just filled with creative spirit.

  19. Nancy West says:

Thank you, thank you, thank you for the newsy Willard giving us a peek at Martha’s Vineyard (which was on THE BUCKET LIST for this year….but looks like it will HAVE to wait another year? Perhaps 2015 to help me CELEBRATE 65 years on this wonderful Earth?), and then for this morning’s blog, and more sweet, positive thoughts, and for the awesome opportunity to possibly win one of your specially prepared giveaways. (Pretty sure that was a run-on & on sentence, but WHO CARES!
I learned so much of how to appreciate letters from the females in my family who came before me. I think it isn’t something you can understand unless you “lived” it. People actually wrote their thoughts on paper, their joys and their sorrows, and that is how they shared their lives with people, not instantly like we do now by computer and text and twitter. But actually written in ink on sometimes beautiful paper, or a quick note. As I read your Willard, I realized this is just how I used to feel about reading those letters. Thanks for taking the time to write it and make us feel special when we “went to the mailbox” this morning!
    Have a blessed day!

  20. Paula says:

    I. love seeing your photos of spring in New England, I miss the seasons as I now live in Florida. Your blog is so enjoyable, makes me homesick at times, and I can’t wait to receive Willard!

  21. Hi Susan,
I loved reading Willard and your blog. It’s like Christmas to me when they arrive. Can’t wait to make your lemon roll to share with my mother and siblings. Your give-aways look wonderful as always. Keep writing. We all need it so much. With kind regards,
    Constance

  22. Karen Kingsbury says:

I just wanted to say, “Thank you”, for sharing all of your talent ( writing, photos, artwork, music, sounds ( ie. bird tweeting, songs), childhood memories, travel experiences, life…) with us. Whenever I see the “Susan Branch” email, with Willard, it makes my day. I forward it to my 85 yr. old mother & sister who lives in France. They enjoy reading/exploring your letters/website, too. This morning, while reading your blog, I thought of my father, who passed away 31 yrs. ago at age 60, when I read your quote about Ella Fitzgerald. She was his favorite singer of all time. (He was very musical & passed his genes onto my brother, who’s a professional guitarist in San Francisco.) I’m sure you realize, from all of your years of traveling around & meeting people, that you affect SO many lives with all that you have done & continue to do. THANK YOU, Susan Branch!

  23. Jodene Dunphy says:

Oh, thank you for sending the Willard! I don’t have a Facebook page and I’m not very good at keeping up with blogs. But, to receive your Willard in my email box this morning was a wonderful delight. I’m on vacation from work this week – a “stay-cation” in San Diego with my two boys who are out of school this week. I poured myself a cup of coffee and read the entire Willard without rushing. I did not know you had a new book out last year and I have ALL your other books. I am going to order one, or two or maybe three for my sisters. See what one can do with a little time off and a new Willard. Thank you, Susan!

    • Juli says:

Jodene I’m not a Facebook person either but if you just tap it on the right side of her blog ‘FOSB’ (for Friends of Susan Branch) on Facebook it takes you right there 🙂 you don’t have to anything 🙂 (its between a box with a flower and says something like you’re going to love this and ‘Tweet’

  24. Bea Tapparo says:

Hi Susan: Waiting expectantly for Willard. Love the new give away as I do everything you do. Happy Spring to you!

  25. Dot Freel says:

I loved Willard and your blog so much and had been wondering when it would come out. I wish I could order everything from your website that you mentioned in both. For so many years, I have always loved everything you make. You make me appreciate life even more than I do. Your life seems idyllic to me and reading about it makes me happy.

  26. Colleen Starr says:

Hi Susan, what a blessing you have been in my life. I have followed you for years and am a huge Gladys Tabor fan also. Thank you for reminding us of how life really should be. P.S. Loved your book and mom does also.

  31. Charlotte says:

“Hey there!” Most delightful spring to you and yours. Thank you for lifting my thoughts to days gone by and the simple joys of life, so often forgotten in the sometimes not so important after all. May God bless you and keep your trust in our loving Savior. (He changed my life!) Thanks, again. ~Charlotte

  32. Hi Susan; Thanks for the lovely Willard and Easter ideas. Can you tell that we’re close by? We are visiting my daughter and her family in Hingham, Ma. so I can almost reach out and touch you. They are rehabiting an old Victorian and they hope to be living in it this summer. Maybe when we come visit them in the “new” house we can take a boat over to your island. I’d love to do that one of these times. Meantime I can ask you to include my name in your “make up” prize.
    thanks,
    JoAnn

  33. Janice hearns says:

  38. Ellen Specht says:

    Dear Susan Branch–

I love your blog, your Willard newsletter, and own almost all of your cookbooks……
but oh, I do love, love, love A Fine Romance which made me feel as though I was travelling with you and Joe and visiting all of those wonderful places. The combination of your charming watercolors and lovely handwriting, the photographs, and the places you visited is irresistable. Can you publish your next book in a larger format? I like to see your watercolors with more white space around them like jewels in a crown! Love, Ellen Specht

    • sbranch says:

I’ll keep that in mind . . . I wanted AFR to be small like a diary, but I was thinking this one might be an inch or so bigger.

  39. Pat Heenan says:

Thanks Susan, love Willard for many a year now.. What joy.. Did not know the
name of that shell, seen many. We lived in South Yarmouth for many years, loved the Cape..now back in NH, miss the usually easy winters and the quietness
that comes over the Cape on Labor Day afternoon !!!!
Thanks for all you do, love it.
    Pat

  45. Karen Hoven says:

Happy Spring, Susan! I always love reading the Willard and appreciate all of your details about the arrival of my favorite season on Martha’s Vineyard. I have collected all of your Willards for many years. I remember going to my mailbox and finding a new edition, walking through my garden to the kitchen, making the perfect of tea and reading the letter VERY slowly. I have them all stored in my bookcase so can be “with you” without turning on a single “device!”
Have a wonderful Spring…can’t wait to learn more about the new book!

  46. Helen says:

Of all the gifts nature gives us the most wonder-full are the treasures from the sea…….what is more exciting than bits of agate, glass and wood that have been made silky smooth and/or shaped into unique and unimagined figures. Thank you for helping us always to appreciate the gifts of nature.

Thank you the wonderful afternoon “read”, blog and Willard! Time for tea!

  50. Beth Starr says:

Hello Susan, My Sisters, Mom and I have loved your cookbooks for years. My Mom passed away last October, so this Easter was a tough one, not having her around. But her traditions and love live on inside us. I loved seeing the Easter basket that your Dad and Jeannie sent you. How special is that. I want to remember to do that for my kids when they are married and living away. What a cute and great idea. Wishing you a very happy Spring! Thank you for your notes and beautiful artwork. Beth

  51. Debby Scire says:

Welcome back! What a lovely surprise in my mailbox. I have missed you. However, I must say it was well worth the wait. I read through three times and savored a different tidbit of my Willard each time! I copied recipes, watched birds, drooled over shells (LOVE the shells). However, since I am a lemon lover, my first order of business will be to make the lemon roll! Yummy, slurp, aahhh!

Thank you for sharing that recipe, and again – WELCOME BACK!

    Debby S.

    Happy Easter, Happy Spring–thank you.

  57. Valerie Orleans says:

What a fun read this morning. Each year, I host a “Mother’s Day” tea party and invite all the women in the family–grandmothers, mothers, sisters, daughters, nieces, cousins…and we drink tea and eat scones (and other goodies) and laugh and laugh. I think I’m going to try to lemon roll this year. Wish me luck!

It was just a few days ago that I wondered what happened to Willard; it had been so lonnnnnng! Lo and behold, opened up my email box today and there’s Willard! I’ll tuck away the cake recipe until my weight-loss program is ended — but I can eat some Stuffed Eggs now!
Here in Arroyo Grande, CA it’s harder to see the changes of Spring so, thanks for the glimpses from Martha’s Vineyard.

Your comments, recipes and pictures are such a blessing to me after a few very difficult years (loss of my son). Thank you so much for sharing with me; you help me get through my days.

Loved the Bunny cake for Easter and am making the lemon cake for Earth Day! Wow! You are so great at sharing recipes. I’m yearning for the sea and for the books. I haven’t been able to buy A Fine Romance yet and would hope for Vanna to pull my name!! I collect old books, so I’d love those, too. Please, Vanna! Happy Spring to you, Joe and the kitties!! Look forward to your post every day!! Love, Janyce

Re-discovered you last Fall in the Lake District when other BPS members mentioned (actually, they were going on and on about it) your wonderful, fun book. Especially loved the Beatrix Potter mentions… Now, look forward to your blog and everything else Susan Branch.
    With best wishes,
    Margaret

I’m thinking of using that sponge cake recipe (minus the lemon zest) with a recipe I have for a fluffy mocha cream filling, sprinkled with cocoa instead of the powdered sugar! Your recipe seems simpler than other, fussier recipes! Yum!

Greetings from across the water. Daffodils are abundant here in Newport, oh so pretty.. I had lovely yellow tulips given to me, but my orange tabby cat, Heidi, found them delicious and I had to gift them to a neighbor. I’m going to make the cake, looks so good. Happy Spring to all.

Hi there Susan! You are such a wonderful person.
Just think of how many people you have touched
Anyway, I love seashells and have an idea for you I always
did with my little boys on the beach. We would make our
summer necklaces with seashells that had a hole in them and
Put them on string So glad to hear from u again
