Hello from Smallville!

“Hello,” as my dad says, “from Smallville!”  ‘Cause that’s where I live too.  And I like it lit the firehere.  Sometimes the world just seems too big ~ but the bigger it gets, the smaller I get ~ because here in Smallville,  it’s always a nice day. There’s plenty to do in Smallville too … it’s not a boring place.

Things that don’t count in the big world are EVERYTHING here.  When the world tries to get into Smallville and upset the smallness, I shut it out, turn on the MUSICA (listening to this now), light a fire (hearing it crackle), watch the birds busy at the feeders (peep-peep), and do what needs to be done.

toxic world

doing dishes

Like cleaning shelves. Nothing more common sense than this, sometimes it needs to be done.  I give myself a sense of purpose and accomplishment by getting the cooking juices off yellow glasswaremy shelves with a hot soapy cloth; washing dishes (I wash the ones with gold trim on them by hand) and putting them back on the shelves, shiny and clean.  Standing back and looking at my handiwork and saying, “ahhhh, look at that sparkle!”  I’m always happiest when my corner of the world is clean and organized and a new year for me always includes organization, which my mom says, is the key to success.

doing dishes

Some of the dishes are washed by hand, and these just came out of the dishwasher.

doing dishes

It’s before dawn and my audience is very quiet, just waking up, she pussyfoots around.  No loud applause.  Just purring.

And speaking of organization . . .

address book

The other thing I wanted to share with you is an organizing thing that has turned out to be SO GOOD I had to tell you about it.  I had this old (no longer in print) unused address book lying around, so I grabbed it and turned it into a brand new thing.

address book

It’s now my “Internet Address and Password Log Book.”  Before I thought of this, I had all my notewebsites and passwords written, but not alphabetized, on four pieces of paper (adding more pages all the time) that got limper and more tattered and worn by the day; torn on the fold and messy with additions and pencil smears ~ I would have to “re-do” the whole thing every so often.

address book

Now I have a real book I can put everything in. Like here, under C, the phone number and email address for Customer Service at my Studio.

It’s a hard-cover book with alphabet tabs that keep everything I need right at my fingertips.

organization

For instance, under M, for Mom, here are all the websites, user names and passwords I need in order to pay my mom’s bills online.  There are copies of her two credit cards, in case I need them. (These pages look a lot better in real life than they do in these photos ~ I didn’t think it would be very smart for me to show the world my passwords so I sort of squiggled them out; I knew you would be proud of me for the quick thinking.)

address book

Under G is my Google Password, and all my contacts with the people at Gladys Taber, my Gmail and Goodreads Passwords too.  Under S, I have web addresses for all the online places I like to Shop, passwords and usernames for shoes and sweaters and art supplies (sometimes I cross-reference and put art supplies under A, or U for Utrecht); under P, I have my Pinterest and Paypal account numbers . . . under C I have my Computer fix-it people, my Credit Card account numbers and contacts, and so on. I can pack this book up and take it with me no matter where I go! Very handy don’t you think? SO much better than my previous way of doing it.

address book

I thought maybe this was something you might want to do. And, just in case you don’t have an old address book lying around . . .

I do!  Two in fact, you can choose! You like yellow?  We have yellow.  You like blue? We have blue!

Both come complete with alphabet tabs . . .

They’re both in full color, binder style, they come with lots of pages. I blow on my fingernails, polish them on my sweater, say to myself, Brilliant!  It makes me feel good to be organized.

And if you like it too, I have something for you!

A new drawing for these two “Internet Address Books,” one for our lucky winner, and one for the lucky winner to give away to her lucky friend! All you have to do is leave a comment and you’ll be entered into the drawing.  (NOTE: If the blog is mailed to you, you might not see a place to leave a comment, go directly to www.162.240.10.175/~susanbs3/susanbranch/, scroll to the bottom of this post, look for the tiny word “Comments” at the very end in tiny grey letters, click there to comment so you’re entered into the drawing.)  Vanna (she’s our virtual in-house Game Girl and “random number generator,” although she would hate to be called this) is on high alert, ready to do her job in a few days, to choose the winner.

So here in Smallville, all is well, even though it’s freezing outside . . .

Inside Smallville, it’s 72°, it’s organized (within reason) and as flowery and summer-like as  I need it to be while I paint for our new 2016 calendars.

This is perfect timing! I had just decided to get all passwords and credit card information in a safer place when I read your blog. We have to be so careful with all our private information. Thanks for the chance to win one of the beautiful address books!

  2. I would love to win your address books, they would be so helpful. Thanks for the chance..

  3. Sue says:

    Hi Susan!

You rarely let me down…my Saturdays always get off to a great start when I find a new post from you (even though it’s hard making myself wait for Saturdays to read your blog). I, too, live in Smallville and would love to retire there permanently. Unfortunately, work intrudes come Monday morning and I’m forced to leave my cozy Smallville weekend retreat for the hustle and bustle of Realityville. 🙁

I’d love to win your address books to share with my friend Sylvia. I just spent Christmas with her and her husband in their lovely new San Antonio home and your address book would be a nice addition to their new home office. I’d like to offer a couple tips I use in my regular address book: (1) write the addresses in pencil so you can erase and change if friends move; and (2) I’ve started putting my friends’ daughters info under the letter of their maiden names because I sometimes forget their married ones. Ditto cousins who have been widowed or divorced and remarried. Using pencil to write in your internet passwords is also a good idea since some sites have you change them from time to time. Of course, be sure to keep your internet password book in a safe spot.

Maybe after I’ve run weekend errands I’ll start washing my old dishes. That’s almost a meditative action for a gray day… (and I scored four GORGOUS little dessert dishes at half-off in an antique shop in Comfort, Texas during my visit with Sylvia)

    Have a great week!
    Sue

  4. Jane says:

I just transferred my old address book addresses and info to your wonderful yellow address book this week. Now I want to use your awesome idea in your wonderful blue address book. I need cheering up…leaving our “home” of over 36 yrs. to a condo the end of Jan. and I am so sad and can’t stop crying. I am an organized person usually, but have to admit I am very scattered with most of the info you recorded this way…and can’t find info when I need it because I don’t remember where it could be. Brilliant idea, Susan!! Blessings for 2015!!

    • sbranch says:

It must be so hard. I will face that myself someday, leaving the House of Creativity behind. But I’ve made up my mind to think about decorating the new place instead of the years of love experienced in the one I will have to leave behind. Life has a way of making plans for us. We are so lucky to have these decent choices. Good luck with it Jane. My heart is with you.

    • Julia says:

Jane, an elderly aunt had to move from the only house she had
ever lived in and was having a hard time of it. I recommend
that she read WEST OF THE NIGHT. There is a quote in that
book that helped her a lot. Would like to think it could help
you. I must read it again myself.

      • sbranch says:

I know of a book WEST WITH THE NIGHT . . . and if it’s the same one, by Beryl Markham, what a wonderful book it is!

        • Julia says:

It is the same book. There’s a part in it that
says something like you are who you are and
everything that you’ve had or felt in the old
place you take with you to the new place. You
          don’t leave it behind.

          • sbranch says:

The writing in that book is so beautiful, it was the first time I used a highlighter on a book, just for some of the wonderful passages like the one you are mentioning.

  5. Betty Warren says:

I really live in Smallville, almost. In a little community called Little, KY. And it is the best place on earth.

What a grand idea! No more scraps of paper taped all over everything. Thank you.

  6. Patty in Redlands says:

    Hi Susan,
I changed over to your blue address book when I did my Christmas cards. The old book was a mess and wasn’t a lovely SB creation. I love it! So now I need the yellow one for your newest clever idea. Thanks for the chance to win!

  7. Cyndee Randall says:

Oh, my goodness. Genius! Good bye to post-it stickies all over the place! I checked out the “Jack” (Kitty Love) link. Oh my. Love. He reminds me so much of my dear, late Mr. Darcy. (Also a tuxedo.) They are the best cats! Thanks for sharing!

  8. Suzanne Giljum says:

    Happy New Year Susan
We haven’t had much snow here in St. Louis yet, but when it comes this is a great project for me to do. Thank you for all your wonderful ideas.

  9. Susan Swartz says:

What a terrific idea! I’m going to make this my number 1 priority for the new year!

  10. Kimberly Busby says:

What a wonderful idea! Thank you for the chance to win.

  11. Charlotte says:

Great idea. My little pieces of paper all match but they are getting messier with each addition.

    Blessings to you in 2015.
    Charlotte

  12. zooperson says:

Thank you for these posts that make the day so much better. Zoomed over to the kitty spot and love those kitty photos once again. I NEED that address book, I am drowning in slips of paper and stickey notes. : )

  13. Linda in SoCal says:

Love this idea! My old tattered address book should have been tossed out long ago but I couldn’t bring myself to do it. But now I’m motivated to transfer from there into a new address book AND make similar entries as you’ve described. Would just love to have one of your address books, Susan. Brilliant!

  14. Patsy from Illinois says:

I was thinking after I made out my Christmas cards this year that I needed a new address book. So many cross outs of folks who have crossed over or those who have just floated away. Need something new. Please enter me in the drawing. Thanks Susan.

  15. Crystal Raczenski says:

Great idea- I have some of mine in notes on phone under a fake name, but this is a much better idea!! Love to have it!

  16. Lee says:

I would love to do this and be a bit more organized. Stamps under S 🙂 thanks!!

  17. Denise :) says:

What darling little books … of course, it’s in keeping with everything you do! I adore your artwork! Hugs to you and the kitties! 🙂

  18. Carole Kurth says:

Sweet Susan, I nominate you for the Nobel Peace Prize in Organization!!!❤️
What a PURR-FECT IDEA!! I always feel happiest when I’m organized, but this
area of Life has always stumped me. Having a beautiful place like this to write within
is inspiring! Thank you also for your Jack posting–God is SO creative and
loving in sending our pets to us!

  19. Renee says:

    Dear Susan,
Greetings from Largeville! And of course, thank you for creating beauty for me to feast on when I need it. Always, I visit your website when I’m in need of pretty beauty and a birdy singing. Hope you realize our many gifts bring the world to a better place.
I agree with your Mom! Organization is the key to success. You have lit a fire under me, and I’m gonna tackle some less than organized bits in my home where Christmas décor was dumped in a closet this year without regard to what’s what.
We are so cold in Largeville these past few days, that when you go outside dressed like a mummy, your whole head still feels like a rotten tooth upon cold water! Hurts! Hurts to take that mandatory Largeville walk!
I’m on it. Will order an Address Book and use it for all of those passwords I can never remember and have to constantly forward to my email, because I’m unable to retain. It will be nice to have organized the ever growing mountain of techy info. I’ll snuggle it up next to A Fine Romance. Still hoping there will be a Scotland book in your near future (and ours!).
    Stay warm and many thanks,
    Renee

  20. Linda Morrison says:

I have been putting my email addresses and passwords and such in an address book for quite some time. It’s getting pretty tattered and torn. I would love to have a new address book especially a “Susan Branch” one!!!!! Thank-you!!!

  21. Patty from Ohio says:

I knew you would have a jillion posts, Susan, I hope mine isn’t too late. I love to be organized too, all my PW etc. are on index cards I try to keep together but they do like to organize themselves (I believe mischievous faeries like to play with them). I feel as if I am in Smallville, too, so I stay in my world & try to ignore Madison Ave Marketing, whose sole purpose is to terrorize people!
    Love~
    Patty

  22. Grand Pam says:

Would love to share the address book with my sweet sister!

  23. Anne Hegg says:

What a wonderful idea for organizing all those scraps of paper! Please enter me in the drawing.

  24. Dayna says:

The ice crystals are so beautiful, we have none of that here in So Cal. Thanks for the picture. Great idea for the book although my non techie husband still reaches for the phone book. It’s now coming apart, it’s been so well loved & used.

  25. jane says:

Dear Susan I must share with you how you touched my life yesterday. Last week, I wrote you a comment that my husband is retiring and we are choosing to leave our 41 years of living in Seattle and build a house on an island north of Seattle in which to retire and get away from traffic and craziness. Yesterday, as we crossed the water on a ferry to arrive at the island, I was filled with trepidation that I was leaving all of my friends, some family, and stepping our in faith that we were being encouraged to do this. I opened your blog and read the perfect words of encouragement — Smallville is exactly where we will be — nevertheless close to “civilization” as you are with the Cape and Boston, but: no Starbucks, no fast food, no traffic, etc. And then, I clicked on the Girlfriends link (the night before, I shared a knitting circle and bubbly with ten friends – a monthly occurrence to which I still may go if I choose), and your words soothed me so much and reminded me gently to carry on with making new friends, with volunteering (we’re attending our first new member class at our new church tomorrow), and again, stepping out on this new adventure. Bless you, dear one, for your wisdom, heartfelt and lived by you, that completely changed my disposition and carried me through another day, knowing that attitude is everything, that we must not, as my husband says, “get stuck in a rut” and just to enjoy all of this. I, too, love to organize and clean and iron and garden and know I will love my new life. But you, with your words, confirmed all of that and more for me. THANK YOU!!!

    • sbranch says:

I hear your heart in this and know you will enjoy your new life, your new friends are just waiting for you!

    • Chris Wells In Knickerbocker, W TX says:

      Jane,
You don’t ever lose your old friends, either! It gives them a new place to visit!

    • Donna C says:

Could it be Whidbey Island? What a beautiful place that is! I visited a dear friend there last summer who is fairly new to island living. I loved the ferry ride over. I know it’s a big island and there are others, but if you meet a lady named Marty, you may have much in common….knitting, volunteering, church, and tea-time. Best of everything to you with your new adventure.

    • Julia says:

You will be fine. I lost my husband 8 years ago (way too young.)
So I am here in Smallville ALL by myself. My children and
grandchildren are 6 hours away! I have great friends here and
I take it one year at a time because life is change. I see my
“old” friends often and with email, phones and return trips,
not much has changed. Enjoy! We don’t even have a traffic
light but we do have a bridge!

  26. Kathy Eriksen says:

Very, very clever idea. It seems whenever I travel these days I need to have this information with me. Some is on my phone but your idea for this easily organized storage option is terrific. In the past I’ve found myself writing down this info on yet another piece of paper, stuffed somewhere in my carry-on. All I’ll have to do now is pick up my handy little book and I’m off. It has also occurred to me that, heaven forbid, a disaster where one has to swiftly relocate from hearth and home, this is an easy grab it and go item. Thank you.

  27. Brenda says:

I love how organized you are! And Jack, well what can I say, I fell in love with him. I’ve been trying to talk my husband into getting a kitten but for now I just have to go visit my daughter’s cat Emma. I love her and I know she loves me too.

    • Teri V says:

My address book still has my sister’s address where she lived over 25 years ago! This could be the push needed to give up all the envelope corners and scraps with addresses. My husband is the organized one around our house. He’s been working on organizing me for forty years. He missed my little burnt orange address book! Love your stuff Susan! Keep it comin’!

  28. Heather says:

I love what you did with the address book! What wonderful creativity you have!

  29. Cora says:

Yea for Smallville–nice to live in a place where you don’t face a traffic jam every time you get in your car. Could use the e- address book- right now I need to search through various “special” books to find the necessary passwords. Thanks for all of your sharing.

  30. Tracy Jones says:

    Hi Sue,
I have an address book of yours that I keep all my contacts in. However, I’ve been meaning to collect and write down all my internet connections and such. Great minds think alike! If I don’t win the drawing I think I am going to buy the yellow book. Either way I win AND get more organized! xo Tracy

  31. Lori B says:

You perfectly expressed how my husband and I feel about our little life- we live in Smallville too!
My mother-in-love (who introduced me to you about 20yrs ago) and I were just talking over Christmas about getting our online lives organised. The idea of using an address book is brilliant 🙂

  32. mary from pa. says:

oh! how wonderful, just last week I was shopping in your store site. I noticed the address book, and I thought how I would love to have one..
The little things in life, are so wonderful. Thank you.

  33. Marie C in AZ says:

I love both covers on these address books! And such a wonderful way to organize passwords and addresses–so straightforward and easy. Your posts make my day, Susan!

  34. Ellen says:

Wonderful idea! Desperately need to reorganize my passwords.

  35. Sarah Wagler says:

Love your creative ideas. Your kitty, Jack, is so cute. Reminds me of my sweet kitty, Precious, who I lost in Oct of 2014. I miss her so. Happy New Year to you. Thanks for sharing.

  36. Donna C says:

I love that quote in your opening….”getting so much information all day long that we lose our common sense”…..that is right on sister! About a year ago I took an old journal and made it my Internet password book. I felt sort of embarrassed when I took it with me to the computer repair place thinking I’m not very computer savey if I’m resorting to paper and pencil. He said he wished all his customers kept a book like that ! Thank you for all you do to brighten my day.

  37. Kit says:

Oh your address books are so lovely! I would love to be entered. Thank you! Your post reminded me that I need to wash my Roosters and Roses china in the kitchen. Thanks for the push! 🙂 Kit

  38. Cheryl Jasina says:

What great idea! I too have little pieces of paper floating all over in my desk drawer and tattered pages as you with my old notebook. Here in frozen Michigan, I, as you, am “nesting” the best word in the English language or any language is HOME! Thank you Susan for all your inspiration! You are a true blessing!

  39. Donna says:

Hi Susan! I love the idea of using your address book as a place to store passwords, etc….I have set it up on the computer, but what good does that do if something happens to your computer and then you can’t access the passwords when needed????? Anyway, would love to win this giveaway! Sending blessings your way!!!!!

  40. Josephine Gadaleta says:

    Hi Susan!
Love your blog! It’s cold here in NJ too! Your address/password book idea is brilliant! What a great way to keep everything organized and it one place. Looking forward to an organized new year! Thank you Susan!

  41. Jennifer says:

I love your blog and your books, can’t get enough! I also love your address books. I still use them as address books 🙂 I think I’m the last person on earth who still likes to write and receive letters in the mail. 🙂

  42. Carol C says:

How timely!! As I was doing Christmas cards this year I noticed how full of crossed out addresses the old book was AND it had been worked over by the Chewing puppies. So, I ordered your yellow address book to reorganize. I think your idea is a good one but will probably list mine on the frequently called numbers page and put it behind P for passwords. Thanks for the idea and now in to wash the teapot collection!

  43. Maryann says:

I just re-wrote mine…. love to be organized also, from addresses to closets and drawers. A Place for Everything and Everything in its Place!

  44. I have about six 4″x6″ cards -getting more tatterdemalion by the second – used for all these silly passwords…….Your idea is inspired! I can keep addresses on my computer, but don’t want these passwords there.

And your blog brings happiness to me during all the vicissitudes of life. Thank you!

  45. Maryann says:

I just did that myself! I love organization…. from addresses, to closets and drawers. Everything In Its Place – and A Place For Everything!

  46. Rosemary from Portland, Oregon says:

What a great idea, Susan. I have been using the inside flap of a notebook and not in any particular order, as I always have to add new ones. Thanks for all the color and inspiration you bring to all of us! and Happy New Year!

  47. Theresa says:

    Susan,
As always, your posts make my day sweeter! I really need a new address book! Mine is falling apart. Even a practical, useful object should be cute and fun to use, and yours are certainly cute!

  48. Cheri Tuthill says:

Always love your ideas! I have one of your pocket calendars and that helps me keep organized as well! Thanks for be such a caring friend-

  49. susan says:

What a great idea. I have an old Martha Stewart mini binder hanging around. I think I know what I will doing this afternoon. 🙂

  50. Diane R says:

Susan, your blog is a total joy -I enjoy every aspect of it. You are a creative inspiration!

  51. Deb E in PA says:

    Hi Susan,
I enjoy your blog posts so much! Like a letter from a friend, such a nice surprise in my in-box. Great idea for the address book. I ordered one of your address books last year and I’m finally going to re-do my current old address book, hopefully before I have to get it out to do this years’ Christmas cards!
I have a question for you….how long do you leave your Christmas tree up in your house? Just wondering.
Have a very Happy New Year!

    • sbranch says:

I like to put our Christmas tree up just after Thanksgiving, and have it all down either just before or sometimes even on New Year’s Day . . . I like to have a clean slate for the New Year. If I let him, Joe would leave the tree up until the end of March!

  52. Rogue Cook says:

I love the original address book and still use it everyday! Would love to have a companion for it. Love your blog!

  53. Nancy Petrie says:

What a great idea! So useful! Thanks for thinking of us Girlfriends!

  54. Linda... Gardnerville, Nevada says:

Hi Susan … Happy New Year!

  55. Andrea D. says:

Oh my goodness! Susan, your idea for a password log is just fantastic! Thank you so much! Happy Winter… much love from New York. 🙂

  56. Rebecca Thornton says:

Wonderful idea and the yellow one looks like spring! Love it.

  57. Pat in rural Ohio says:

Gosh – why didn’t I think of that for my passwords! Since we’re on the topic of books, my dear friend Bunny gifted me (and her) with your new ‘Autumn’ book this fall. I asked my husband what kind of cake he would like for his November birthday and he answered, ‘chocolate.’ I went to page 98 and made the ‘Birthday Cake.’ Wow – how delicious – needless to say, he was very pleased!

  58. Pat Holland says:

Dear Susan, Thank you for the wonderful “full moon” bookmark. I print and laminate them for each of my grandchildren, some friends and myself. Everyone really appreciates knowing the names of the full moons and when to look for them. And, thank you for the opportunity to win the address books. I hope that you and Joe are having a good start to the New Year. Pat Holland

  59. Betty Townsend says:

What a fantastic idea! I need desperately to redo my internet addresses and this is an excellent idea to accomplish that task. Thank you for sharing!!

  60. lani nelson says:

Susan, Got it. I was having a longing to watch Gosford Park on itunes. As I went on the site- Password?????? Forgot of course. Had to go bother my poor husband again for help. I shared with him your idea and I am off to our local stationary store Monday. We too have a piece of paper that is well worn and a MESS! So THANK YOU!!! Lani

  61. Monika says:

I really like that you thought of this new dated use for an old dated item and not just tossed it out. Thank you for passing on these thoughts.
Have a most peaceful day – Monika

  62. Cindy says:

Even though I technically have my password pages in a notebook, they are just 5 random punch-holed pages STUCK in a notebook—-not alphabetized and certainly not in any notebook as cute as yours! Sign me up for that drawing!

  63. Cindy Maulin says:

hi susan!! Brilliant beyond brilliant idea ….I am a lot like you… jotting down info hither and yon knowing I will remember it all..( ha! ) but husband is the worst … scrawling phone numbers, emails, passwords along the side of the newspaper, next to the NY Times crossword or on a page in a magazine he’s been reading and then beyond himself when he doesn’t know what happened to said information and asking what I did with it!!! win or not.. intend to do this one way or another….. loved your Kitty Blog too… as animal lovers we have always shared their homes …from our very first goldfish to our beloved canines to our lovable devil kitty… we have been blessed to be in their presence … “Animals are reliable, full of love, true to affections, predictable in their actions, grateful and loyal… difficult standards for people to live up to”…..Alfred A. Montapert – author of ” The Supreme Philosophy of Man…The Laws of Life”……. pretty astute I’d say!! Well.. I am inspired to get in there and get after my kitchen pantry shelves so off I go …. but first a chilly walk to the park in search of our eagles… have not spotted them yet know just any day now… #anticipation! take care and stay comfy cozy warm and happy…. love, cindy

  64. diana navarre says:

Love the art work and the clean dishes!! Always such a good feeling when it is all clean!!

  65. janejane says:

  66. kat says:

I’ve thought of that idea myself, but couldn’t ever find the good “old fashioned” book for it. How wonderful you have them, and that there is a chance to win one! Thanks!

  67. Rosemary says:

Oh, Susan, how I look forward to your blog posts. Whatever the weather or season, your posts are always filled with sunshine, joy, and coziness. The organizer books are adorable and I am already thinking of a zillion things I could put in them to keep me organized. Please enter me in the drawing.

Some days I think you live inside my head – or inside my thoughts at least. More and more, I’ve been retreating to Smallville as I consider it the only way to survive the ‘Real World’!

There is SO much we don’t need to know – or should I say we don’t need to dwell on – and your cleaning chores and organizational tips are perfect ways to ‘distract’ us from those things that only cause stress and anxiety.

I keep a somewhat tiny ‘notebook’ with all that password ‘stuff’ – and I really need to work on it – discard the things I’m not getting into any longer – and get it all into a binder like this. So thank you for this reminder!

While I consider myself an organized person (some say I’m obsessive-compulsive 🙂 ) I always learn new things like this from you – so thank you once again for making my life a little easier – and just much more pleasant in general!

  69. Beth Keser says:

Love this post! I am cleaning and organizing today and stopped for a coffee break and read this! I am still putting away Christmas and trying to organize that stuff too! Thanks for more inspiration 🙂

What a totally awesome idea to use your address book for passwords etc. etc.!! I have been working on get all of mine together – so incase of an emergency or such that my husband/kids would know what to do and where to go for info!! I would love to win this to really get them all organized and so prettily!!!

I love hearing all about your kitties…. we have 3 adopted ones in our house now… through the years we have rescued two kittens from outside… and adopted 5 through our Humane Society – two of them being older cats. Such love and joy they have given us. Actually, Spottie (who was black & white) was left by his mommy in our yard… she had been bringing him here for weeks – and I fed them… one day he was here all by himself and no Mommy…. we think she knew we would take good care of him and bring him in the house. That we did! My son and him bonded so much that when Taylor went off to university, so did Spottie!! He was 19 years old when Taylor had to put him down from cancer. Such a sad time for my son (who was 29 years old at the time) They truly are our furbabies!!!

Great idea, Susan. I think I can also use it to keep organized with all the mail I am now receiving as I am retiring in 5 days and am receiving so much mail from Blue Cross, Medicare, social security, etc . It is confusing and overwhelming!!! Bought the candles from the nuns and your book. Love them both.

  72. Patricia says:

I can’t imagine that no one is selling these type of “address” books – I’d love one and would give the other to my daughter who has more names and internet connections and passwords and whatnot written on pieces of paper and old envelopes and in a file on her computer desktop – but what happens if your computer crashes, your cleaning lady tosses out the bits and pieces of notes…

Thanks for thinking of us, yet once again.

  73. Susan Austin says:

The best to be would be an address book from thee!

  74. Yvonne Bumanglag says:

Awesome idea ! Love your work 🙂

  75. Sara says:

That Patricia Stewart is one smart cookie, Susan, and so is her daughter… and not only for being so organized but for being so very clever too! 🙂 Sara 🙂

  76. Laurie says:

Thank you, Susan, what a great idea! I have designated 2015 the year that I absolutely have to become organized, and this useful idea will help tremendously. And your wonderful mom is right, organization is the key to success.

  77. Judy Tracy says:

Love your ideas. Already have a thick notebook size book for my regular addresses. Also have a notebook that I file Google maps in after I’ve gone some place, and then I don’t have to reprint it the next time (like quilt show locations). The notebooks are covered with batting and fabric so they are easily identified.
Just picked up one of your recipe savers notebooks as I use them as wedding or shower gifts in the family with old pictures of family members associated with certain recipes. You’ll spur me on some more:>) Thanks, Judy

    • sbranch says:

You are SO organized! I bet your herbs and spices are all alphabetized, right? Mine are, but you’re way ahead of me when it comes to Google maps! Love what you do with the recipe books, making pure keepsakes out of them. xoxo

  78. Claudia says:

Love your ideas for an address book! Hope to win your give away!

  79. CarolK from NJ says:

I happened to mention to my husband you blog about Smallville and he said, Superman lived in Smallville when he came down from Kripton. And I thought, why not.

  80. Diane says:

Love love your post on Kitty Love. That’s why we have 4 kitties and a Golden Retriever!
Your suggestion to organize passwords is great. I’m constantly forgetting mine and have to reset them (getting older you know) but also it would be good to record them and have them in one place just in case , God forbid, something happens!

  81. Helen Hougland says:

From my Smallville in Kansas to yours, I thank you for the insightful and kind remarks about the joys of living small. I agree with all of it! I have my trusty little folder next to my computer with about six sheets of typing paper filled with passwords that are alphabetized but have new additions penciled in here and there. What a botch. I would love to win one of your pretty address books to greatly help me organize my life in 2015. This would make things tickety-boo!

  82. Jackie says:

Your internet logbook idea is terrific! I’d love to win the prize….. then I (and a friend) will have another way to simplify life. What a grand thought.

  83. Kathy says:

What a great idea for unused address books! Su-per Genius! 🙂

  84. Nettie says:

Thanks for all the lovely photos! Your posts are wonderful and I look forward to getting them. They really brighten up these dull January days.

  85. Mona in Riverbank CA says:

Thank you for your lovely winter photos!!! I miss that here in central CA. As you know, it is technically winter, but feels more like second autumn followed by early spring. 🙂 You’re the best Susan ever – your blogs fill a spot in my soul! =^..^=

  86. Diane says:

Oh Susan, what a great idea to put passwords, etc. into an address book…especially one so lovely as yours!! Right now, my passwords are on a dog-eared index card that is really hard to read because I have put way too many on it. I’m really hoping that I’m the lucky winner of your give away.

…but for now, I’m off to read the Kitty Love part of your post.

Love from Diane in North Carolina

  87. Grammie mary says:

happy new Year Susan and friends!
Susan, I posted a comment earlier, but had to leave, so not sure if I posted it, so here is another one. Thank you. ( Mary from Pa. )

  88. Suzanne says:

    Hello,
I too have passwords on a list (printed from my computer). I actually have one for home and one for my school websites. Winning two would be the perfect solution. Thanks for warming us up with your love on such a frigid day!
    Suzanne

  89. Lee Ann Alspaw says:

Great idea! I’m always forgetting my passwords for different websites. I could really use this idea to organize myself.

  90. Jennifer Raddatz says:

Such a good idea!! Of course more special with such beautiful artwork surrounding it!

  91. Helen says:

Hello Susan, I find your blogs very therapeutic. I love your artwork and you make me appreciate my home and life here in England even more xx

  92. Ruth Ann says:

It’s nice to know that someone else enjoys making dishes sparkle. Thank you for cheering me up, Susan. God bless!

  93. Donna says:

Maybe if I am the lucky winner of the address book, I can finally remove the
collage of password post-its on my bulletin board. Thank you!

  94. Susan Roubal says:

I love the old address/new password books. I routinely use my ‘old’ address book (and could use a new one) and have many new addresses pasted over old ones…I am trying to singlehandedly keep the USPS alive and well by writing old fashioned letters!

BTW, Susan, have you ever considered making some ‘old fashioned’ letter paper, you know stationary for letters longer than a note? Printed on very fine quality paper with your lovely designs, I would be in the line to purchase some!

    • sbranch says:

I had some beautiful letter paper at one time, in a gorgeous box, but it is long gone. I still have a part of one box left . . . I should show you sometime.

  95. Christine says:

Yes, organization is certainly the key word around here. Working on it now. Your address book sounds like a nice helpful idea for that also. Below zero temps all last week here in Michigan, so a good time to stay inside and work on some of those piles that need organizing. My world is pretty small right now too!

  96. Kathy B. in AZ says:

Hello Susan in SMARTVILLE! Love this idea! Thank you for sharing this….(and thank you for the Full Moon bookmark too!) Big cheers to you and all in Smallville!!

  97. Teresa G., Lafayette, CA. says:

BRILLIANT! I have your wonderful address book, but how boring am I, there’s addresses in it! Love your idea! I’ve spent the entire first part of this year working on getting organized. This is the year I say good-bye piles, good-bye messy closets. I’m getting pretty restless with this whole notion, and I’m knee deep in junk and treasures, but you’ve spurred me on! Your mom is right and I want to be successful so I’d better get organized! What a lovely surprise, Susan! Thank you!

  98. Karen Chandler says:

A charming archive for passwords…I must do this !

  99. Mary Carmen Duque says:

Precious organizers! I am charmed with the two both the blue and the yellow one. Thank you very much for sharing his advices Susan is a marvellous idea to have an organized home.
    An embrace.

Loved seeing all your beautiful dishes! And your address book idea is just brilliant. Please pick me, Vanna!

About that crust on the snow….long, long ago in Maine when I was little, we had a weather event that made a really strong crust on the snow. My brothers and I strapped on our skates, and away we went, skating through the woods, the fields, down our (usually) dirt road–oh, it was magical to fly everywhere on skates. There’s
a crust on the snow now in Maine but alas it won’t hold the adult me. I just hope somewhere in New England children are skating on the snow–
