Hello from Smallville!

“Hello,” as my dad says, “from Smallville!”  ‘Cause that’s where I live too.  And I like it lit the firehere.  Sometimes the world just seems too big ~ but the bigger it gets, the smaller I get ~ because here in Smallville,  it’s always a nice day. There’s plenty to do in Smallville too … it’s not a boring place.

Things that don’t count in the big world are EVERYTHING here.  When the world tries to get into Smallville and upset the smallness, I shut it out, turn on the MUSICA (listening to this now), light a fire (hearing it crackle), watch the birds busy at the feeders (peep-peep), and do what needs to be done.

toxic world

doing dishes

Like cleaning shelves. Nothing more common sense than this, sometimes it needs to be done.  I give myself a sense of purpose and accomplishment by getting the cooking juices off yellow glasswaremy shelves with a hot soapy cloth; washing dishes (I wash the ones with gold trim on them by hand) and putting them back on the shelves, shiny and clean.  Standing back and looking at my handiwork and saying, “ahhhh, look at that sparkle!”  I’m always happiest when my corner of the world is clean and organized and a new year for me always includes organization, which my mom says, is the key to success.

doing dishes

Some of the dishes are washed by hand, and these just came out of the dishwasher.

doing dishes

It’s before dawn and my audience is very quiet, just waking up, she pussyfoots around.  No loud applause.  Just purring.

And speaking of organization . . .

address book

The other thing I wanted to share with you is an organizing thing that has turned out to be SO GOOD I had to tell you about it.  I had this old (no longer in print) unused address book lying around, so I grabbed it and turned it into a brand new thing.

address book

It’s now my “Internet Address and Password Log Book.”  Before I thought of this, I had all my notewebsites and passwords written, but not alphabetized, on four pieces of paper (adding more pages all the time) that got limper and more tattered and worn by the day; torn on the fold and messy with additions and pencil smears ~ I would have to “re-do” the whole thing every so often.

address book

Now I have a real book I can put everything in. Like here, under C, the phone number and email address for Customer Service at my Studio.

watercolor flowers

It’s a hard-cover book with alphabet tabs that keep everything I need right at my fingertips.

organization

For instance, under M, for Mom, here are all the websites, user names and passwords I need in order to pay my mom’s bills online.  There are copies of her two credit cards, in case I need them. (These pages look a lot better in real life than they do in these photos ~ I didn’t think it would be very smart for me to show the world my passwords so I sort of squiggled them out; I knew you would be proud of me for the quick thinking.)

advice from mom

address book

Under G is my Google Password, and all my contacts with the people at Gladys Taber, my Gmail and Goodreads Passwords too.  Under S, I have web addresses for all the online places I like to Shop, passwords and usernames for shoes and sweaters and art supplies (sometimes I cross-reference and put art supplies under A, or U for Utrecht); under P, I have my Pinterest and Paypal account numbers . . . under C I have my Computer fix-it people, my Credit Card account numbers and contacts, and so on. I can pack this book up and take it with me no matter where I go! Very handy don’t you think? SO much better than my previous way of doing it.

address book

I thought maybe this was something you might want to do. And, just in case you don’t have an old address book lying around . . .

address book

I do!  Two in fact, you can choose! You like yellow?  We have yellow.  You like blue? We have blue!

Both come complete with alphabet tabs . . .

They’re both in full color, binder style, they come with lots of pages. I blow on my fingernails, polish them on my sweater, say to myself, Brilliant!  It makes me feel good to be organized.

And if you like it too, I have something for you!

A new drawing for these two “Internet Address Books,” one for our lucky winner, and one for the lucky winner to give away to her lucky friend! All you have to do is leave a comment and you’ll be entered into the drawing.  (NOTE: If the blog is mailed to you, you might not see a place to leave a comment, go directly to www.162.240.10.175/~susanbs3/susanbranch/, scroll to the bottom of this post, look for the tiny word “Comments” at the very end in tiny grey letters, click there to comment so you’re entered into the drawing.)  Vanna (she’s our virtual in-house Game Girl and “random number generator,” although she would hate to be called this) is on high alert, ready to do her job in a few days, to choose the winner.

So here in Smallville, all is well, even though it’s freezing outside . . .

And everything is coated in this crisp frozen-on snow crust . . .

The wind whistles and the shutters bang and ice crystals grace all our upstairs windows ~

Inside Smallville, it’s 72°, it’s organized (within reason) and as flowery and summer-like as  I need it to be while I paint for our new 2016 calendars.

I go to your site at least once or twice a week to see if you have posted anything new. I tell all my friends about your site and tell them they will just love it. Your site always gives me a lift. I live in a log home we built quite a few years ago and far from a major town, but I wouldn’t change it for the world. Sometimes its just good to close out the world in our cozy little homes if just for a short time. The address book is so cute and such a good idea as just yesterday I was thinking what could I do with all my passwords and favorite websites that are on numerous scraps of paper and here you go with this great idea.

  2. Margot ~~~ Virginia Beach says:

I like the flowery border that you are painting. It would make a good sticker or stationary border.
I too am freezing and organizing. I do have a little internet book, but I never thought of just using an address book. Ah Ha!

  3. Joanne Yeager says:

I love the address books! What a great idea for internet addresses and passwords! I would like to win these? Thank you Susan.

  4. julie says:

What a great idea! Thanks Susan!

  5. Donna says:

I love it when I come across your new posts. They just make my day. And, thanks for the reminder about organizing…everything in my china cabinet needs a warm soapy wash. Polishing silver doesn’t sound like fun but, for some reason, it makes me happy. Seeing things sparkle and shine makes me feel good, too. Thank you for your beautiful heart warming posts Susan. XO

  6. Jan A. says:

Some organization of addresses and passwords is desperately needed by both my sister and me (just call us the Messy Sisters). Although we don’t live together, we’re two peas in a pod, best friends by choice, and vowed this is the year we simply must get organized. Thanks for the inundation of kitty love!!!

  7. Maryellen says:

I need to organize all those passwords and internet addresses and that is a wonderful way to do it. Great idea!

  8. Lois says:

An address book, what a great idea and yours are darling!!! I have all mine written on a pice of notebook paper and it is a HOT MESS!

  9. Patti says:

I would love one of your address books, or 2! Thanks

  10. Cheryl Walsh says:

What a great idea for organizing all the “stuff” we need to remember these days! I love the keeping smallville positive post- I always organize and clean after I pack up Christmas-feels great for the new year!

  11. Kate says:

Smallville is the very best place to be these days. Comfortable, cozy, warm and as safe as any place can be safe nowadays. I live here daily and thank God each day for my blessings.

  12. Debbi says:

thats a great idea. And I’d love to use one of your books.

  13. Karen in Breezy Point says:

I’ve been using an address book for my passwords for years, but it’s not as adorable as yours!

  14. Nancy from SoCal. says:

I’ve been cleaning also and sending piles to the thrift shop these last few days, seems like spring cleaning happens in January to a lot of us! My two shelter/rescue kitties are one of the best parts of Home. Thanks for the warmth and comfort reading your blog brings me.

  15. Sue Marshall says:

What a clever repurposing of a traditional item! Clever you!

  16. lilea says:

Oh, my. I am so long overdue for this bit of organization. I would love to be a winner. Warm wishes to you!

  17. Chris Wells In Knickerbocker, W TX says:

You are genius Dear Susan! Our passwords are everywhere! I would certainly love to win a Susan Branch address book, but even if I don’t I bet if I dig around the house I will find one somewhere to use for this purpose! Not as pretty….but functional.
The news is terrible, so this weekend, I will also be cleaning and organizing, washing and shining, scrubbing and polishing. It makes me happy. Cats, puppies, fire for warmth, football on the TV and bake something wonderful!
Have a wonderful weekend! Thanks for everything!
    Chris

  18. Robin Coxon says:

I love your blog. It provides me with such joy which is wonderful during this cold, nasty weather here in northeast Ohio. We are not only dealing with the sub-zero temps and wind chills but due to Lake Erie we are blessed with lake-effect snow. It’s nice to go to your blog and get that warm and cozy feeling.

  19. Heather Eddy says:

This is a great idea! I’d have to make sure the book itself stayed secure, but hopefully that won’t be too hard. It’s also nice that it’s binder-style. Very handy!

  20. Kathie says:

Susan, I don’t check for a few days, and there you are! The address book idea is great. My passwords, etc. are a mess also, one of my New Year’s resolutions. We had windchills of -30 today, so I made some Susan B. deviled eggs. Be well.

  21. Amy says:

Susan…your address book idea is fantastic! Most everyone now keeps all their info in their smartphones. I am a cave woman and I still have “dumbphone”. I like it that way. I don’t want my phone to grow onto my body like I see with a lot of people who can’t be without their phones even for a minute! So the idea of using the address book in book form really has appeal to me! My passwords and all that stuff are also written on little pieces of paper and stuffed into a desk drawer which is a nitemare to dig thru! Hope I win your darling book so I can get organized too! Love you and all you do for us kindred spirits!!!!!!

  22. Robin says:

Happy New Year Susan! Love your repurposed address book idea. Much better/prettier than my current system of using my old Rolodex file. Many thanks for the Martha’s Vineyards photos. I grew up in Orleans (on the Cape) and your pictures take me home! Thank you!

  23. Cheryl Freeman says:

This is my very first time to leave a comment even though I’ve been reading your wonderful blog for a few years now!! Your internet address book idea is brilliant!

  24. Michele Salazar says:

Bad news and good news…I would love one of those little kitties but I’m allergic
    🙁
Good news…I’m starting watercolor classes at the community college so maybe I can learn to paint some kitties!!

  25. Lee Ann Prowell says:

I want an address book! I love all of your work . . . please keep it up!! 🙂

  26. Terry says:

    Susan,
What a brilliant idea! I love it!
Guess what? I have your original address book and I still use! I love it! But I do love your idea, so if Vanna does not pick me I will be at your store to buy one.
    Terry

  27. Kathy says:

I’d love to win a yellow one.It would force me to organize my addresses.I haven’t done that in years.I’m a big Downton fan as well.Waiting to see if Lady Edith will reveal her secret How will Mary respond?

  28. Renee says:

Great idea. Even if I’m not picked to win I’ll do this anyway! Always looking for an excuse to buy more of your things!

  29. Ann Reynolds says:

Do I really have to get another kitty?

  30. Debbie P. ~ Weedsport, NY says:

    Hi Sue~
I want to wish you a very blessed New Year! It appears with all your projects…the book, the calendars, the blog… that your plate will be full! What a wonderful balance you seem to have struck by living a busy life in Smallville. It’s the best place in the world to live and work, isn’t it?
My little Smallville is growing bigger by the hour but that’s a good thing. As I write, the phone is literally under my nose, waiting for a call from our son to announce the arrival of another dear granddaughter to our family! Labor began early this morning….I’m perched on the edge of my chair, just waiting to jump! This day will be written in the history books of Smallville!
Thanks, Sue for all you share with us! You are a generous soul to share your work and your life! Love you!
    xoDebbie

    • sbranch says:

Congratulations Debbie! You must have your baby granddaughter by now!

      • Debbie P. ~ Weedsport, NY says:

Thank you! Yes! Olivia Grace arrived at 11 pm! George and I met her today and although I may be slightly biased….she’s perfect! It’s amazing how all the troubles of the world just melt away when you’re holding a newborn baby in your arms! …especially if she’s your precious granddaughter <3

  31. Margaret B says:

What a clever idea as the scraps of paper here, there and everywhere are getting quite out of hand.

  32. Diane says:

Love this great idea for the address books! Thank you Susan!!!!

  33. Ann P in VA says:

what a wonderful idea! I am always struggling to keep track of all my passwords and Internet sites.

  34. Cheryl from Redmond, WA says:

What a genius idea. Thanks, Susan. I always look forward to your posts. I’m feeling the need to clean, clean, clean — must be catching!

  35. Barb in MI says:

What a great idea for a new way to use an address book! I need to get organized and get rid of my loose pages of info floating around. Thanks for the chance, Susan!

  36. Brenda says:

Husband and daughter are headed to Dominican Republic tomorrow for a week long mission trip. Sounds like a good time to organize, even though I am mostly organized now thanks to redoing my kitchen & bathroom this summer. But it’s one of my favorite things to do. And BTW, I am in dire need of a new address book, was just realizing this a few weeks ago while doing my Christmas cards. So if I don’t win it, I know where I’ll be getting it from.

  37. Robin Hughes says:

Your blogs continue to be delightful and so enjoyable to read, especially when it is winter and you are all snug and warm in your house. Thanks for all your wonderful posts throughout the year – your effort is much appreciated.

  38. Gerry says:

What a great idea, to use address books for organizing! I would love it! I wondered if you ever made a stacked block, square calendar, where you tear off a page a day. Each page would havea picture–that you drew of course, and a quote, for each day. I would buy! I recently bought the young adult book “Wonder”, by P.J. Palacio, which is a great book our book club read. The author, also wrote a book called “365 Days Of Wonder {Mr. Brown’s Book of Precepts}”, related to the book, “Wonder”. It has a quote on each page, which leaves lots of space for a gratitude thought or some short journaling. I decided to use it for a journal/gratitude journal. Both books are great–worth reading for adults and kids. I wish every middle and high school student would read “Wonder”. I think you would love both books. I hope I did not already mention these books in an earlier comment to you–I don’t think I did! My feeble memory! I have been trying to let people know about them so just letting you know I only am meaning to tell you about them once. In case this is a duplicate comment.

  39. Jen Y says:

    Enter me please!

And if you can’t get a kitty for laughs, a puppy will do quite well, at least at my house she does. Especially a little one that loves to sit on your lap. 🙂

  40. Lois says:

    Hi Susan,
You have the best ideas, I swear. Why didn’t I think of this? I am very glad that you thought of it. I have my info and passwords on a few papers, and they aren’t very organized, but soon they will be! I am always so happy to open your emails and jump into your world for a little while. Thank you for all that you share with all of us.

    xox

  41. Pat says:

Thx again for the wonderful organizing idea! I love to read yr blog-get great ideas and inspiration! Actually using your humidifier idea of the wet towel near the heat vent right now!

  42. Sharon Bader says:

love to be organized so would really appreciate your address book!

  43. Joan says:

    Love the address books. Thanks!

  44. Vicki says:

It’s weird how I don’t get your post in my email box until 478 comments have already been entered?! Not complaining…just glad I get it! Thank you again for a lot of wonderful here; love the kitty stuff at the end and particularly the ice crystals on the window…awesome photo. Good idea about the passwords all in one place; I, too, have an old eyeglasses case full of little scraps of paper with passwords and sites, ridiculously-unorganized creature that I am. Stay warm!

  45. Muriel says:

Even if not an official resolution, new years and organization just go together! The oh-so-cute address books are so much better than my password stack of post-it’s! Happy happy 2015!

  46. Kathryn says:

I think the address book idea is genius! Where I am it’s been very foggy and we still have a bit of left over snow to keep our hopes up that more is one the way. I’m an organizer and cleaner by nature so I understand perfectly your cleaning and using some hot sudsy water!

  47. LaurieW says:

What a great idea. It is cold and windy here today.

  48. Terry Jansen says:

So many things happening to cloud the good in our world. I log onto Susan Branch and find immediate comfort and a good deal of sense. I’ll spend this day in my Smallville and be grateful for it! The address books look delightful and very practical. x

  49. Jeannie S says:

I love the clever idea for your address book! Any tips to get organized are appreciated! Happy New Year and stay warm!

  50. nonnie says:

Thanks, Susan . .great idea. I also love being “organized”. I was thrilled today when I got home . .my husband cleaned out the food cabinets in kitchen and eliminated out of date canned goods . . .why do I save such random things! Anyway, it was so uplifting to see the cabinets rid of excess “stuff”. Kind of like shedding our heavy coats in spring!

  51. Martha says:

Susan, the idea of using an address book for Internet addresses and passwords is a great one. Pretty and practical. I like it!

  52. Marla says:

How nice to start off your post with a fire in the fireplace! Thank you for taking me away from the nightly news program tonight. It’s 5 degrees here so we have our fireplace going too and our 16 year old “kitten” (well, actually…she’s a cat) sitting next to me…she still has spunk at her age and sometimes acts like a kitten. Love your dishes…so pretty! Great idea on the address book too!

  53. Sharon Anderson says:

What a great idea. I love it!

  54. Linda says:

I love your pictures of your cat keeping a watchful eye on your dishes. It seems it todays world we need these quiet moments away from all the craziness of the outside. To recharge, to keep ourselves calm, to remind ourselves we have somewhere to retreat to with tea, a good book and a companion purring on our laps. These, as the song goes, are a few of my favorite things.

  55. Annie says:

    Susan,
Hopefully I will win one of these books because I am going to use it as a door prize for my book club meeting. I picked your book It’s a Fine Romance AND Northanger Abbey by Jane Austen. We are having a tea party. What a great door prize this would be. Thank you for being so generous! Ann

  56. Jacquie Sewell says:

Brilliant idea Susan. My list of passwords and secret handshakes is getting a bit tattered and it’s definitely not as attractive as your address book. If I’m the lucky winner the second book will go to our mutual BFF Barbara Tabb (of Michigan – where it is currently very cold and very blowy – great day for a cuppa in front of the fire!) Blessings to you in 2015. Jacquie

  57. Josie A says:

Were you in my kitchen with me the other night? When I was paying my bills? I didn’t see you. Wish you would have said hello. I would have made a cup of tea for you, too. You must have been there and heard me muttering while I was taping pages back into my little yellow spiral notebook that has my un-organized passwords in it. You must have heard me when I said I needed to find a new one, and by gosh! I was going to organize it this time! You must have seen my frustration and that gave you the idea!! Next time you visit me, please say hi. And if you tell me ahead of time, I’ll bake a little something to go with the tea!

  58. Amy O'Quinn says:

What a wonderful idea…and a lovely one as well! I need as much help as possible with organization! Love your blog and your newest book!
    Blessings from Georgia…
    Amy O’Quinn

  59. Linda Smith says:

Thanks for a chance to win. Your address books are beautiful like everything you do!
    Keep up the great work.

  60. T S Cole says:

What a great idea! I use a rolodex for all of my internet items. Remember those? I really could use an address book. I have mine from my wedding shower from 1985 and it is in pieces, so I would really use your address book as an address book.

  61. Mary Anne S says:

And I thought I was the only 1 with all those post-its all over the place! So glad to know I am not. Sue, this is a genius idea and I am sure your address books will work wonderfully for the job. Thanks for sharing with us.

  62. Kim says:

Oh Susan! I think you should design a new address book, or a new sort of “web/computer” book. That way we could all have one! I am definitely going out tomorrow to get myself a new address book just for this purpose, at my local stationery store! Brilliant idea

  63. Cori says:

I so need to be more organized!

  64. Stephanie says:

Love the Address Books and what a great idea to store passwords etc! I have a small one that I got years ago (yours) that I still use because I still send snail mail, thank you cards etc. Yes! I too am thrilled that Downton Abbey is back!!!!!

  65. Nancy in Carnation says:

TERRIFIC idea!!! I am due to replace my old address book and now I am planning to order TWO…or…ahem…I was going to order two…unless…of course, Vanna draws my name! 😉 Thank you for all your blogs…I love ‘visiting’!

  66. Nan says:

That’s a brilliant idea and even if I don’t win I’m going to put my old adress book to work! Thanks and Haooy New Year to you! xoxo

  67. rjchiodini says:

love the idea of organizing my “pile” with one of your darling address books….please and thank you!!!!

  68. Brenda Swanson says:

I love this idea! January is my favorite time for home organization projects.

  69. Lissa Whittington says:

Susan, Thanks so much for offering these lovely address books. Anybody would be happy to receive them. You are such an inspiration to us all. In my neck of the woods it has been very cold but nothing we can’t handle. There are so many bad things happening in the world that a little cold is not going to hurt us.

  70. Jeanne Hedin says:

I actually have your suggestion (address book) written on my to-do list for this month. My current 20 year old book is bulging with bits and pieces, passwords taped on, new addresses tucked in and scratched out. I will wait to see if I am the lucky duck in this drawing before tackling this project! 🙂 Regardless of who wins . . . great idea to pass on. 🙂

  71. Barbara Sue says:

Hello to you, Smallville! What a great idea! I would love to have one of your books ( yellow, if I had my druthers ) but even if I’m not that fortunate, I’m going to follow your example. Thanks!

  72. Deanna Boatright says:

Thank you so much for the wonderful idea for organizing all my addresses and passwords. This is my year for organizing my home. My son and his wife came to visit on Christmas night and spent a week with me to help organize my garage so that I could have a new home for my new car. We worked very hard every day and it was a success. I’m sorry to say it has been several years that the garage was never used for it’s real purpose. I’m now working on releasing several items in the home to the universe that others will be able to enjoy. This is helping me really enjoy my favorite things. My passwords and addresses are a real mess. I would love to win the two beautiful address books and give one to my loving daughter-in-law for all her hard work in organizing my garage. I’m a very lucky woman to have such caring children.

  73. viv says:

What a great idea. I have a little paper notebook for passwords, but it’s all tattered.
Thanks also for the quote regarding too much information. I’m not sure where the fine line lies between knowing what’s going on in the world and being overwhelmed by all that’s happening in the world. I like the idea of keeping our own “Smallville” a haven for our family.

    • sbranch says:

I think the most important thing is having knowledge of how our government works. After that, you sort of know by common sense what is in your own best interest. And once they start repeating themselves three times on the news, making stuff up because they don’t really know what’s happening, it’s time to go to Turner Classic Movies. Rules of the road in Smallville.

  74. Dolly Mullowney says:

I so love January! It gives me the time to regroup and reorganize after the busy holiday season. I feel like I have a fresh start on life. And one of my to-do items this month was to find a new address book – yours is perfect.
Hope you have a fabulous 2015! xo

  75. Sharyl B. says:

Oh, I would love to get my passwords organized too. Mine are just on random pieces of paper. I also have two kitties. They’re both black. We got them at the same time 6 yrs. ago because I thought they would love growing up together. Well, guess what? They don’t like each other. Maybe it’s because they are sister and brother and you know how siblings can be. But, it’s OK we love them anyways and they bring us a lot of joy. We don’t let them outside anymore because there are too many wild animals around here. Many kitties go missing here. Oh, by the way, we also have three big dogs. Love them all!

    • sbranch says:

I got a brother and sister kitten set once . . . they loved each other as babies, but grew apart too. But there was never any hissing or anything; in kitty world, I call that “getting along.”

      • Sharyl B. says:

Yes, I would call that getting along too. Mine do hiss at each other and when they did go outside, the boy would chase the girl up a tree.

    • Chris Wells In Knickerbocker, W TX says:

      Sharyl,
Three of my cats are siblings, 2 males and a female…..they just love each other. Our fourth cat a female, gets along with the two boys, but not the female…..much growling and hissing, but no battles thank heavens! Your cats blow my theory about litter mates always getting along. Guess they are like humans….we don’t always like the relatives we were born with! 🙂
Not sure you will ever see this with the amount of comments!

      • Sharyl B. says:

Yes Chris, I guess they are like humans. They have to live in the same house, but they don’t have to like each other.

  76. Carol says:

What a perfect answer for all those passwords and other important numbers. Love how you think outside the box and repurpose something. I LOVE to be organized and always feel so satisfied when I am and feel so out of control when I’m not. Would love your Internet Address and Password Log Book. Keep your organizing tips coming. I’m staying warm and snug in Smallville today also.

  77. Maureen says:

Oh Susan, you are so very clever! I have little bits of paper all over my office with this information on it…mostly little yellow stickies! If the door was open and a little wind got in I would be totally lost!

So basically I really need this and of course, I am sure I have a friend who needs one too! Please Vanna…pick me, pick me!!

  78. Valarie A Whitcomb says:

Address Book – great idea – could definitely use one!
Love the kitty postings – and the crackling fire –
Virginia is cold – but not so snowy where I live.
Thanks, Susan, for always cheering us on!

I want to relocate to Smallville! Love the idea of using the address book for websites and passwords. I typically keep those in a boring spreadsheet, but this is a much cuter idea. Thank you and happy 2015!

Well for goodness sake. I spent today cleaning special holiday dishes and putting them away. Sparkly is happy! Cold days (even in Florida) are good days to clean. And I did some sewing for our very special new great granddaughter, Riley who is now 6 weeks old. Nice warm, soft minky sleeping bags to keep her toasty warm up in Virginia. Have a snuggly weekend 🙂

Speaking of kittens…When our son moved away to Colorado for school, you could just tell in his voice that he was homesick and lonely. He came from a home with horses, dogs and cats, and now had none. My friend also lives in Colorado, about an hour from him,a nd her barn cat had kittens! So he adopted TWO of the little terrors! They kept him from putting up a Christmas tree, and generally like to rule the roost. But he was so much happier once they came into his life.
I like the address book idea. I keep all my passwords in an excel file that gets updated all the time. Then I print out a copy and keep it at my desk. I might just try your address book for home!
Thank you for all the lovely ideas.

He sounds like really good husband material! I wondered about keeping passwords ON the computer ~ but that’s because I travel a lot and worry if my computer was stolen, they would also, conveniently, get all my passwords at the same time. I guess it wouldn’t matter if I had a stationary computer.

Organized? I can’t WAIT to be organized again! I’m in the midst of a kitchen redo and living in chaos. That idea for address books is wonderful! I’m always chasing down bits of paper. By the way, Susan, your kitchen has been, in part, an inspiration for my new kitchen, mostly white and wood with a bit if vintage! Max, Muggles & Mick wish Girl Kitty & Jack a “Meowry”wonderful New Year!

I flashed back to when we were redoing our kitchen, you used the perfect word, chaos. But it’s so worth it in the end!

  83. Jean Carrington says:

I love the address book idea. I know people who have journals that they use, but this is organized!!!!

  84. Elizabeth says:

Oh Susan, you are such an inspiration to me! I love your charming blog and felt connected when I saw your clean dishes. I just polished up my every day silver cutlery and feel so good looking in the neat drawer of shiny knives and forks. I would love to use those address books and give them a good home. Sending best wishes for a lovely new year from Wichita, KS!

Stumbled upon this from my own Smallville this evening. I Love this idea-thanks for sharing.

  86. Patty says:

This is such a great idea! And I know just who would get the second one if I was the lucky winner!!

  87. Linda Pintarell says:

Thanks for a great idea, Susan. I want, want, want to get organized. Trying hard, but something seems to come up…like nice, sunny day outside…and out I go. Since I live in Southern California it happens often. Guess what…last year I waited for a rainy day to clean cabinets…it didn’t happen…and that is not a good thing. We NEEDED the rain very much (and my cabinets needed cleaning). Trying again this year. Happy 2015 to all the girlfriends.

  88. Mary Pat says:

Oh, Susan! You brighten my days! We still have our Christmas decorations up waiting for my sister to visit with her husband next weekend! After she flies home, I’ll have my chemotherapy treatment, and come home to a house needing your magical touch! Reading this has given me the push I’ll need to get everything sparkly! Thanks!

Hello, Smallville! I’m writing from Cozyville! Want to hear what went on around here today? Discovering that I was bleary-eyed-weary from looking after our dear dog (who has lymphoma) all day and all night and all day long, my sweetheart sent me trundling up to the guest room “for a little nap”. I tucked into the guest bed, under the very best quilt, with the electric blanket turned way up and a cat snuggled right in, and then that stinker did not wake me up in the suggested two hours. Nope. He let me sleep for eight solid hours. All day long. Such luxury here at my house. How can I help but enter to win one of your charming address books? Today is surely my lucky day.

  90. Laurie Mitchell says:

I have one of your older address books that I have used for many years. I like the pages at the beginning where you can wirte the phone numbers that you call most. I just used my address book in December for my christmas cards. I also use your day book and have your calendar on the wall in the kitchen. Laurie from Cape Cod

My daughter calls our little town in NH where she grew up plesentville
Which I take as a great compliment.
she said” I didn’t realize I grew up in Pleasantville until I moved away.”
What a great idea for all those passwords and information.
thank you for the give away.
    Cathy

    • sbranch says:

There really is a Pleasantville (probably more than one) in California up near San Francisco, and it’s a very pleasant little town! How nice your daughter feels that way about where she grew up!

I absolutely LOVE your idea of using an address book for passwords! I too have pages of typewritten passwords, I’ve made copies, but they fade as they get older, the corners are all turned up, my penciled notes are smudged and where I’ve folded it in half to stuff in my purse upon occasion, I can’t read what was written on the fold line. I also have that same address book you used, and in fact wrote my Christmas cards from it once again this year. I know that I’ve had it since at least 1998 because that’s when I started writing down the years in which I sent and received cards. So, I could definitely make great use of two books – one for passwords, and one really for addresses since my sixteen year old book is full of crossed-out names and addresses as friends have married, divorced or moved, and I’ve pretty much run out of pages. Thanks for such simple and unique way of keeping track of all the dozens (hundreds?) of passwords we need just to function every day!
