Another Snow Day . . .

Good morning Girlfriends . . . go get a cup of tea.  I have mine, plus a toasted English Muffin; my feet are cozy inside my shoes which were pre-warmed in front of the furnace grill; it’s snowing outside my windows, big floaty flakes just like the ones at the end of Bridget Jones Diary where Renee Zellweger and Colin Firth kiss in the snow? (Bad language alert, Colin Firth is a very bad boy.) Our snow is just like that! Only more of it and we are wearing everything we own, indoors (But I’m sure if I was her I would not have felt the cold either).

snow day MUSICA?  Oui! I’m trying to learn how to get the camera to focus on the snowflakes; this picture turned out pretty good.  Life goes on as usual around here in Smallville.  The good news is, my studio is clean; I can see the floor for the first time in weeks.  As recently as yesterday the room could have been used in a promo homefor an episode of Hoarding ~ I haven’t been able to vacuum the whole room for way too long, the floor was covered with calendar page layouts, counter tops were stacked with paper, trash was overflowing.  But yesterday I started clearing it up ~ it’s my favorite thing about finishing a project, I get to make a clean slate.  And when I came in this morning I was greeted with lots of open space, no tripping hazards, nothing on countertops. As a person with a Capricorn Moon, I have neat-freak blood in me; not to have neatness for long periods of time makes me cranky. So this is good. I can begin again.

Canwetalkquote

Are you ready? Downton? Me, too. Loved Sunday night! I should remember (for once) to start with a Spoiler Alert.  I’m about to talk about Season 5 Episode 7 of Downton Abbey.  If you haven’t seen it, you should skip to the part down below about the lambs and the snow.

lambs-art

FYI, next week is the last episode for this season ~ the next Sunday we get what they are calling the “Christmas Special” and then it’s over ~ no new episodes until next January when Season Six begins.  We are going to be forced to wean ourselves, a very unfair thing to have to do.  And next season will be doubly bittersweet.  We will settle in for the winter all cozy with Downton, but the last episode of next year will be the very end of Downton Abbey forever.  I’m already crying.

But let’s not go there.  Let’s go back to last Sunday night . . . Let’s see, where do we start?

Mary's coat

How about we start with Mary? I took pictures of the TV screen, trying to capture some of their fabulous coats.  Look at the detail on the sleeves and collar.  So beautiful, looks like cashmere too.  Did you notice that Mary has just become extremely available?   One minute it’s raining men, and now they are both GONE, she is alone with zero prospects.  How odd.

BUT, this leaves Mary wide open for my surprise ending for the season . . . Mary and Tom.  (I should say: I KNOW nothing, this is just my hope and prayer ~ not a spoiler in any way.)  I think they should get together, because a.) Tom simply can’t go to America for more reasons than one and b.) despite her unbearable self-butterflies in loveadoration and haughty attitude, first, and I think, foremost, Mary is a practical person (hence “throw money at the Pig Farmer family re: the Marigold situation” as most expedient way to go). So is Tom. Practical. And Tom is the lifeblood of Downton.  If he goes, the estate is doomed to rack and ruin, Robert will gamble it away or do something equally stupid, or should I say naive, with Downton Abbey as pawn.  And, like Scarlett O’Hara and Tara, Mary loves Downton more than any other thing.  This gives Tom and Mary the third most important thing in a relationship, something they could love together and separately outside of their relationship. (This is probably much Home sweet Hometoo deep considering these people do not actually exist and there will be no marriage or relationship to be inside or out of? Ignoring myself, I drone on . . .)   So the pluses are that they would have each other, they would have their children (who must, by now, think they are brother and sister) and they would have Downton to care for.  It makes sense.

Could someone please get Julian Fellowes on the phone for me? (btw, we have other questions for him; I mean did he really have to let Isis die to move the story forward?  Was that necessary?. . . yes, girlfriends on phonethe dog had an unfortunate name, but still ~ that was very sad ~ and if he can do that gratuitous heart-breaking removal of a wonderful dog, he can certainly allow Mary to marry her dead sister’s commoner widower).  Anyway, next week Tom could turn to Mary and say, Hey, I just noticed ~ I’m single, you’re single, I’m normal, you’re not but I could help you with that, our children already think they’re related, you love Downton, I love Downton, you’re gorgeous, let’s get married and turn the castle into the kind of place they will use for filming lovely English movies in the future thereby saving it for tours for the Anglophile Americans who love it all so much!  WHAT a good idea!  And didn’t you love the scene with adorable Sybie with Tom on the bridge?  What a natural actress that little girl is ~ those big eyes of hers, so innocent and sweet.

hearts and flowers

Downton-abbey-children-ftr.jpgShe looks just like her father. Mary would love a little girl like that.  And speaking of mothering . . .

hearts and flowers

Good job Cora!!! Wasn’t she magnificent?  Swooping in to save her child and grandchild with perfect common sense and no other thought than, bring them home! Well done you!

Negotiating everything wearing another fabulous coat. Then she brought Isis into the bed with Robert, perfection and strength of character.

loving heart

pink border Then there are Lord Merton’s hideous sons. Larry (poor suffering thing, didn’t you feel terrible when you learned that Lord Larry had to wait in the car) and the other brother, Tim, wasn’t any better. You all remember that Larry drugged Tom (so he would appear drunk) at dinner in an earlier episode and everyone knew it?  I mean, would you invite him back? Never! I thought I’d seen it all with Miss Bunting, but no.  The people on Downton are brilliant at choosing clothes, their coats and hats deserve to be in the hall of fame, they have great taste in art and set a beautiful table, but they are terrible at choosing dinner party guests.

din-din anyone?

wooden-spoon

Mrs. Hughes would do a much better job than they do. They should run everything by her. Lord Merton says his boys are “just like their mother.” Poor guy! And poor Mrs. Crawley (Isobel).  I could not marry anyone who had children like that.  I would be afraid of poison. I would rather move in with Violet, have lots of tea parties, and help her fire her whiny interrupting Butler. But of course you wouldn’t do that if you were Isobel, your heart is too big and you care so much for the downtrodden common folk.

Violet, aka the Dowager Countess, aka Granny, was in fine form as usual.  The scene at tea with Mary (did you love Mary’s hat?) when she said she was going to miss Isobel’s friendship when she goes off to marry Lord Merton? Wasn’t that sweet? Violet has much too much gravitas to waste any time whatsoever with something as mundane and boring as jealousy.

border

Violet the Dowager Countess

pink border

We knew that. Queens don’t get jealous, and Violet is a pure queen. And earlier, in the train station, when she was telling her daughter Rosamund (who was wearing a surprisingly unflattering organ-grinder monkey’s hat) ~  that they had to tell Cora that Marigold was really Edith’s daughter because (go slow here, this will require thinking), since Cora is Edith’s mother, Violet felt Cora “had the right to know” ~ Rosamund (who is  Robert’s sister) said, “How about the father’s rights, are you going to tell Robert?”  Violet (mother of Robert) said with roll of eyes and little corner-lip-tic, “No. He’s a man. Men don’t have rights.”  I’m sure Mr. Fellowes gave himself a little chuckle with that one. Violet also provided Mary with huge food for thought when Mary sistersmade a disparaging remark about Edith during dinner, Violet leaned in and mentioned that, “lack of compassion was as vulgar” as crying all over everyone ~ I gave a little applause there (although it wasn’t totally fair because Violet knows what’s been going on and Mary doesn’t) . . . I can’t imagine a word that would be more abhorrent to Mary than to be called vulgar, especially by Granny. But for Mary, I agree, in general, compassion would be a gift. I say that with love.  For the nonexistent character of Mary.

Mother

There’s more, Rose is engaged!  Love that!  Hope we get a wedding next week, a slow wedding that takes the entire hour with closeups of all the jewelry, the gifts, the food, hems and shoes and hair clips.  Baxter tries so hard to have friends, but as ex-con jewel thief and police informant, it’s hard for her to make inroads and become “one of the guys.”  I like her, I feel sorry for her too. And, I found it odd that lurking Barrow the Butler was so nice.  What’s he up to?  OK, that’s enough, I know you guys would like to get a word in edgewise . . .

lamb

Just a couple more things to catch up . . . as you’ll notice on your calendar, Chinese New Year is February 19th . . . that’s when it officially becomes “The Year of the Lamb (or Sheep or Goat).” People born under the sign of the Lamb are known to be good-hearted.  I was born under the sign of the Pig (of course, wouldn’t you just know) ~ we are known for being light-hearted and from A Fine Romancefalling asleep easily.  Anyway, to me it’s a good sign . . . A FINE ROMANCE will be published in China in this Year of the Lamb.  Isn’t that perfect?  The book will be out in September.  I can hardly wait to see what it looks like written in Chinese!  How will they do this?  My publisher said they would find a “hand-writing Chinese font” to translate it with, they would like to keep it looking as if it’s handwritten.  I Lambie Piedon’t know if I could even tell the difference.  I’ve never had any of my books translated into another language, so I’m very excited to see this.  I’m not planning to carry it in our store because no one I know can read Chinese . . . but in case you want one, please let me know, if enough of you say you’d like to have one, we can maybe do a pre-order for them. I don’t actually know if they would sell them to me, so I’d have to check into that.

YEAR OF THE LAMB . . . is also the year of the never-ending snow storms.  But we don’t mind . . . we fall asleep easily.

We do the pig thing, and eat constantly.

Here’s our view through the storm door out front . . . There is a mountain of snow pushed up against the curb, the truck is on the other side of it.

The view from the kitchen window is like a Christmas card. I have say, even after all these years, I never look at a scene like this without marveling, oh how gorgeous.

It’s not a snow day, it’s a snow month.

mama CardinalThe beat goes on for these guys.  As long as we keep the feeders full, they are fat and happy.

OK, everyone, hope you enjoyed everything today ~ off I go.  Hope you are all keeping warm and enjoying your winter.  Have faith, it can’t last much longer . . .  Love you . . . Byeeee XOXO

    LOL – love your synopsis on why Tom and Mary should marry, especially “I’m normal; you’re not but I could help you with that”. Love it! Thanks for a good laugh – and for all the wonderful pictures. Have a great day! Linda in PA

  2. Christine Devoe says:

    Thank you for this lovely blog post. We are having our (probably) only snow day of the year in Charlotte, NC for the half inch of ice that fell overnight. I was hoping for a cozy new Susan Branch post to read, and there it was! Always so enjoyable! Love the Downton discussion…..I too think a Mary and Tom marriage makes sense. Poor Isis with the unfortunate name! Hope you are keeping warm up there and not laughing at us southerners too much!

  3. Karen says:

    Organ-grinder monkey hat!! I will be laughing about that for the whole week – just writing it down makes me burst out laughing! *and it is, of course, spot-on! And yes, I agree: I saw the Mary and Tom thing way off – but it had to takes it’s time.

  4. Jennifer says:

    I couldn’t agree with you more regarding Tom and Mary. I’m keeping my fingers crossed and hoping Mr. Fellowes listens up! I’m devastated to hear it’s coming to end for another year. I’m such a fan (of you and the show) and so thrilled that you write about it here my lady. ☺
    I’m loving your bird pictures too. I’ve been trying to get some myself lately and having some success. Our weather is a bit more pleasant here in coastal BC. Here’s to some warmer days headed your way soon.

  5. Hi Susan!
    It was such a treat to read your long, lovely letter!! I truly hope your plans for Lady Mary and Tom work out. It would be so wonderful! I have a great idea, too! This is the perfect time to share an in-depth tour of your studio with us. It would be such fun to see the things that inspire you the most, and how your studio has evolved over the years. I just LOVE peeking into people’s creative spaces! So inspiring!
    Happy painting!

      One of these days, Dawn, I should do that . . . I’ve put lots of photos up over the years . . . it’s really a room of mostly books.

  6. Hello Sweet Susan ~~~

    Still not properly winter here in The Shire ~~~ still waiting for cold and snow so can I please have some of yours?

    There is me thinking I was the only one who {secretly} took photographs of costume dramas off the telly ~~~ but shhhh! ~~~ Oh! the secret is out now. hehehe 🙂

    It is hard to believe that you are all nearly caught up now. How quickly time flies when Downton Abbey Season is upon us ~~~

    It is Shrove Tuesday, so I am full to the brim on pancakes ~ or Pancake Day as some call, it here in the UK I think is equal to Mardi Gras? Yes? Lots of yummy crepes smothered in butter, lemon juice, and sugar ~~~ naughty but Oh! so very nice! 🙂

    Stay warm by your lovely fire drinking tea and eating muffins; I’ll let you use my vintage stoneware hot water bottle if you like ~ it belonged to my great Grandmother.

    ~~~Waving from Across the Pond~~~Deb in Wales xoxo
  7. Michele Deppe says:
    You are truly living in one of those adorable Snow-Shake-Ups! Thank you for the exquisite photos!
  8. Robin in New Jersey says:
    I love your critique of the show. I too think Mary and Tom should get together! I remember one episode when they were upstairs in the hall and they said goodnight and kinda looked at each other, and I was like, there you go, you too belong together! My girls (ages 15, 17 & 19) think I am crazy. They said, “Yuck! Marry your sister’s husband?!” Isn’t the Christmas show usually a 2 hour show?
    Your little birdies are so cute. We used to have a bird feeder on our deck, but finances got really tight a couple years ago, and we had to cut out birdseed. I really miss watching them.
    Boy, do you have a lot of snow!! Man, that’s crazy!! We have quite a bit of snow, got 3 more inches this a.m. We are in the midst of freezing cold temps, even when the sun shines bright.
    I love the bird at the end of your post with “Faith.” It’s so pretty. Thank you for sharing your loveliness with all of us. You just made my day a little better.
    • sbranch says:
      Yesss, that hall scene is what got me thinking. I thought, hey, why don’t you kiss her and shock us all!
  9. susie says:
    Susan, I know it won’t be winter forever…but oh boy, sometimes I feel it could be. I saw a robin today. I know they don’t leave our area entirely, but this is the first one I have seen since fall. I am taking it as a sure sign of spring being so near. Blessings to all at your house. Love the birds and cats.xoxo,Susie
  10. “…and if he can do that gratuitous heart-breaking removal of a wonderful dog, he can certainly allow Mary to marry her dead sister’s commoner widower.”
    Susan, I think that I have now found the best quote EVER from your blog! In fact, that whole paragraph had me laughing!
    Out West we are snow free… In fact, it’s supposed to be in the 60’s today! Now, some might welcome that in their present situation, but I for one could use some snow! I must also say that your snow photos make me want to take the day and read Gladys Taber!
    Finally, we share that neatness thing… My desk is also stacked with illustrations and scattered with markers and eraser remnants… And, after a short while, it drives me crazy and I must stop to clean!
    Have a wonderful day and stay warm and cozy in Smallville!
  11. By the way… Have you found yourself becoming addicted to “The Great British Baking Show”? I’d never even heard of Mary Berry and now I can’t get enough of her and her recipes!
    • sbranch says:
      I worry too much about the people, especially Martha! But I heard she went last week, so maybe I can watch again. I love the desserts!
      • Oh, I know what you mean! It is tough to watch, especially when you have favorites. I guess I’m a softie, too!
        Yes, Martha is gone, but she had a good run and has a good future, I’m sure!
        • sbranch says:
          It was a great opportunity for someone so young. It will probably guarantee her future. I just did not want to see that little lower lip go sticking out.
  12. Kelley S. says:
    Love this post! My best friends and I had a long exchange of emails today debriefing this latest Downton episode. As I read your post, I thought, “Yep. Totally agree. Spot on.” Must confess that I “may” have snorted cocoa at the organ grinder monkey hat. As we frequently say in the South, “Bless her heart.” Our group of girlfriends are traveling to the Biltmore House in Asheville this May to see the Downton Abbey costume exhibit IN THE HOUSE! It’s more than my excitable self can bear. By the way, wasn’t Rose’s pink dress just lovely? I read an article last fall that Isis would have to depart the show because Lady Carnavon does not want to film with dogs in the house. Pour Isis got fired in a way. She is a such a dear, too. What self-respecting English country house doesn’t have a dog? For all of you who are in snow and ice, please stay safe and warm!
    • sbranch says:
      Ohhhh, haven’t heard that about Lady Carnavon. I agree, I thought those folks ALWAYS had dogs! 🙂 See how much I know?
  13. Linda R says:
    I draw an angel card every day and today it was Joy. And I had such joy reading your chat today. I laughed out loud a lot! Wish Tom and Mary would marry too. And my mother said all those things to me, but not at one time.
    thank you for being you, a kindred spirit for sure.
  14. Nicoline says:
    Dear Susan,
    what a treat you gave us today, a LOOOONG post, what FUN! I love your thoughts on DA. Its finished here, so I know what will happen next, but I won’t spoil it for you…. Boo hoo, just 1 more season to look out for.
    You certainly have gorgeous birds in your garden! Is that a wren?
    I would LOVE a Chinese copy of your book! Although I cannot read Chinese, I would like to add it to our collection of ” Chinese related books”. The reason for that? My husband and I have a lost a part of our hearts to China, because it gave us our 2 Chinese sons!! We have travelled to China several times and made friends there and it would also be a wonderful present to give.
    And Jack? Too cute for words!
    Best wishes from Holland, where the snow drops are appearing in gardens
    Nicoline
  15. shelley from Home says:
    I so love your blog I love all your thoughts of Downton. I agree with everything I loved Violet this week. I also loved Cora’s coat. How about the Daisy and friends going to the farm? I loved that they had such a wonderful day. So sorry we will have to wait a year for next season. Have you ever watched the Road to Avonlea series I have all 7 seasons on DVD you should watch some episodes you would love it! Stay warm!
    • sbranch says:
      Did you see the other time Daisy went to the farm and had a picnic? She wore the most darling hat. I wasn’t wild about her outfit this time. But I think that farm is wonderful. I’ll check out Road to Avonlea.
    • Jennie Lou says:
      oooh! Avonlea! I adore it! And dig out the Anne of Green Gables with Megan Fellows and Coleen Dewhurst! You will be inspired, charmed and a fan for life.
  16. Patsy in Nixa, MO says:
    Must you marry Tom off to Mary? I’d chosen him for Edith when they take their daughters off to America.
    Mary will be much too busy to marry when she takes on Edith’s publishing company, in addition to running Downton Abbey.
    And Downton will be sold to Cora’s brother, as he will have married the cook who went with him to America, and she will want to return and flaunt her newfound wealth.
    And speaking of Larry, wasn’t it nice to have someone to hate besides Barrow?
    I guess Carson will marry Mrs. Hughes and they’ll move into the little house they’re planning to buy. They can be neighbors with Mrs. Patmore. Of course,
    Baxter and what’s-his-name-who-complains-about-the-head-footman’s chores will marry and live down the street.
    Isobel and Granny will take care of Mary, her son, and Lord Robert, because Cora will be off narrating a new PBS series since Millionaire American Princesses was such a success.
    Who needs Julian Fellowes? Our imaginations are as big as his.
  17. Lynn says:
    So sad to hear that Downton will only have one more year! I thought the scene with Robert, Cora and Isis was so touching! Of course, the dog had to sleep with them. Are they killing her off just because of her name? How very sad! Both my husband and I cried. Hopefully, Lord Robert can get a new puppy.
    And Tom and Mary make perfect sense. Tom really does not want to go to America. Thank you for the summary – we just watched last night.
    So sorry to hear you are snowed in, but glad you are snug and warm and clutter-free. Love this blog and you!
    • sbranch says:
      I don’t think it’s really the dog’s name at all . . . it’s that the dog is supposed to be old now, and I guess they felt they had to do it.
  18. queenmum says:
    A wonderful critique of Sunday’s Downton Abbey! I, too, thought that the writers had no business killing off poor Isis. I felt worse than when Matthew died! This show will truly be missed.
    By chance do you watch the British Baking Show which airs before Downton (at least on one of my PBS stations)? It is great fun to watch, but makes one hungry!
  19. Your synopsis and comments on DA are, as always, spot on. The dog thing bothers me. Is this the only way they can get rid of a character? I suppose I am still irked by Matthew’s car accident two seasons ago.
    A few things I’d like to see in future seasons:
    1. Violet and the prince getting together or at least talking about their truths
    2. more about Mrs. Hughes’ past
    3. more development in Rose (I know she’s young, but she’s so silly. I liked her black friend and was sorry to see that relationship break up!)
    4. more weddings, parties, and assorted fancy-schmancy things
  20. Tricia says:
    Dear Susan,
    Loved your Downton Analysis, and I agree it should be Tom and Mary looking after the future of the Abbey. That said, something else occurs to me: If Tom went to America, and he could become part of the core cast for the “Gilded Age” series (set in America) for which Sir Julian is supposed to write the script. Then all the Downton folks could come over to visit and we wouldn’t lose them forever, and wouldn’t that be fun?
  21. Frances Fowler says:
    First of all, I love the picture of Jack’s “bunny feet”. Second, I scrolled up the picture of your storm door, thinking that, since you can’t see the asphalt, this might be exactly what some woman saw in the 1800s when she looked out the door to see all the snow covering everything — it’s so beautiful! And lastly – what, I say WHAT shall I do without Downton? Every character will live in my heart and mind just as they do now. I agree that Tom cannot go. Without him, the Granthams would be living in that “small” family home, their version of a cottage, unable to keep the abbey. Mary and Tom would be perfect, even if somewhat confusing for little Sybbie (Aunt Mommy Mary!). Will Edith be a career minded single mom way before it was ever considered socially acceptable? And who will steal Mary’s heart? Will Isobel happily marry and give her two horrid stepsons the boot? Tune in next season…..oh, I just can’t think of it (she said, sobbing uncontrollably).
    • Frances Fowler says:
      I meant to say…scrolled up the picture outside your door so you couldn’t see the power lines. And something I’ve wondered the entire duration of Downton: Don’t the ladies, in a house that must be cool and drafty even during the summer months, get cold in the (gorgeous) sheer evening dresses? Almost all are sleeveless with lots of exposed neck and shoulders. I get chilly just thinking about it! I am mourning Isis 🙁
      • sbranch says:
        Very good question! I’m in here with the heater going, two sweaters, a scarf around my neck and another one on my lap! They must be freezing!
        • Jennie Lou says:
          Don’t you remember your Mother saying how you had to “suffer for beauty”? She always said that when we were doing things like wearing brush rollers to bed, shaving and learning not to twist our ankles wearing high heels. Cold weather would never keep our fashion plates from wearing the latest thing, besides, it was a mark that you could afford to keep the castle hot in winter. Notice the long sleeves below stairs. Isis may have been named for the wave of Egyptian culture that was so prevalent in GB at that time – thanks very much to Lord Carnarvon’s link to King Tut (and a nod to the current family?).
    • sbranch says:
      Edith was the first woman to learn to drive on Downton — she actually is ahead of her time. Just so many sad things keep happening, but now she has Marigold and that’s making everything better already!
  22. I agree about Tom and Mary! I’ve been wishing for that. And I really hope I never have to see miss bunting or those two sons ever again!
  23. Paula A. says:
    I’ve been thinking about the same thing with Mary and Tom! After all, our husband should be our best friend and I think they already are. Love the bent icicles!!
  24. Sandi Skeels says:
    Another outstanding blog …made it thu that last bout of snow here in northern middle Ohio …we are still in the minus minus minus ..another storm coming..at least the winds are GONE ..that was ever so wicked…prayed for all that ”had ” to be out ..and HOPED pet critters were brought inside..KNOW you all are having a ”beaut of snows/winds/icy~ness”and still getting slammed.
    Downton Abbey thoughts of yours were SO on point! HARD to remember next week is the last for a long time….Oh ..so sad for Isis …was mentioned earlier about a month ago on TV ..so I knew that something was going to happen story~line wise…I thought at the time …just don’t say his name outloud …but gasp ..they didn’t listen to me …
    Stay safe peoples…smiles and sparkles ..blessed be…. Watching the birds at my feeders …while I sip my soda (or pop)
  25. Gina P. from NY says:
    Dear Susan:
    Sunday’s episode of Downton was fantastic. I agree with you that Tom would be a good match for Lady Mary – perhaps he could finally “tame” her, where no one has succeeded before! He is steady, honest, honorable – not sure if their politics coincide, but that can be worked out… and blending the two families would be great for the children. I just wish she and Edith could come to some kind of understanding before the series ends. It’s sad to see two sisters who dislike each other so much!
    By the way, it’s been on the internet that Michelle Dockery, who plays Mary just got engaged – apparently to a young man that Allen Leech (who plays Tom) introduced her to! What a coincidence, right?
    I also want to see some happiness for Bates and Anna. I like those two as a couple. Hopefully, there will be no more “secrets” that will harm their relationship, but I am suspicious!
    Wow, you have a lot of snow up there! We have skirted some of these latest big storms. Stay warm and cozy!
  26. Elaine Depo says:
    Last person on the planet who has not seen even ONE episode of the beloved series is writing this letter! I need to get my act together, get to the library, and catch up with all of you! Susan, are you familiar with “The Victorian Trading Company?” You can look online or print catalogs as well ~ a-maz-ing hats! I always think of you whenever I browse ~ so many in that wonderful style you love and look terrific in. Loved the post ~ as always!
  27. Julie says:
    Such sweet bird photos! Love your photography!
    You are too much fun, going on about these characters! Personally, I should like Mary to end up with some stronger type who can whip her into shape a bit (not literally beating, mind you). And oh, the fashions!! Aren’t they grand?? Thanks for the still photos of the coats. How fun to get to dress up like that… Can you imagine being on the show but having to dress like the folks downstairs while everyone upstairs is looking so sublime??
    • sbranch says:
      The downstairs costumes are pretty wonderful too, but they don’t change. I bet when these folks get home, they can’t wait to get into jeans and T-shirts!
  28. Sandra says:
    I love all your snow and your fat, happy birds and Jack being carried to the door like a babe in arms with his back legs in the air!
    I won’t breathe a word of what happens in Downton next as we are ahead of you. I prefer Edith to Mary and I’m hoping both girls will be settled in loving relationships before Julian Fellowes stops writing!
    So it’s the year of the lamb (or goat or sheep) and it’s my sign in Chinese astrology, so maybe I should celebrate on Thursday!
  29. Pamela Tasker says:
    Love your post today…nice and long…..love long…..I just want to keep reading and reading with snapshots here and there…and the musica ! oui! You are spot on with Downton. I too feel there is something between Tom and Mary… and I think Mrs. Crawley is going to change her tune about Lord Merton! She would have much more fun having tea with the Dowager Countess…at least I would have more fun watching them! And yes poor Isis. I saw that coming last week for sure…what’s in a name?….I will have to say I am head over heels when I see your beautiful watercolor drawings….the little lammie pies, and the beautiful birds! I would so much like to have them hanging on my wall….especially the little bluebird I have seen flying with the American Flag in it’s beak. And Jack would make a very fine model as well ! lol…I think your artwork should be made into punch needle patterns!! I will buy the very first one! Thank you for the chat stay warm and until the next time……I will leave you to it……Pam, Dexter, MI.
  30. Kate says:
    OK, LOL, LOL and still LOL at the the Dowton Abby review – it was perfect and I can’t wait to read it to my husband, who will howl. The only thing I would add was his comment at the end of the show… “Mary’s developed quite an attitude these days…” Ha – that’s putting it mildly. But I did not know that next season is it… that can’t be… what will we do??? And yes, Tom and Mary would be PERFECT together – hope SOMEBODY over there is listening… they need to at least throw us a bone that makes us happy since all we will have is memories before too long…
    Loved your snow and bird pictures – snow is my favorite! But only if I am inside and the fire is roaring and the flakes are falling and no one is requiring anything of me… It’s just so peaceful… But we ‘out West’ barely saw winter… and have to live through you and your lovely description. Contratualtions on your book being sold in China! Happy Day to you and Joe and your fuzzy ones…
  31. Amy Warren says:
    I so look forward to your Downton recaps, they make me laugh out loud and are brilliant, as the Irish like to say. Congratulations on having your wondrrful book published in China. FYI..Up here in Quincy, MA, we have an enormous Chinese population, so much so that at election time, all voting materials have to be in both English and Mandarin Chinese. It’s apparently the law that if a certain percentage of the registered voters list another language as their native tongue, you must provide it in both languages. Not sure whether this is a state or federal law. Exciting to think you will be reaching a whole new set of fans. Send a copy to the Thomas Crane Library!
  32. Anna S says:
    Oh it’s about time someone put Mary in her place!! I actually yelled ‘yes!’ When Violet let her have it! (In her regal like way lol) even better that it came from Granny! I didn’t realize next year is the final year though…my heart sank when I read that…I know all good things must come to an end, but chocolate hasn’t so why does Downton Abbey? :~(
  33. Daena in NJ, USA says:
    I thought I was the only one who thought Mary and Tom would make a sensible (?) marriage. There’s a group of us!
  34. barbara Sturtz says:
    Love, love, love Downton Abbey too and I am sad it has to end next year. Thank goodness for CD’s. Everyone around here thinks I’m a little cracked because I like winter and snowscapes….as long as it’s not brown and slushy!
    I so enjoy your blog, Susan, and the pics of the birds are wonderful too. Bundle up and stay warm 🙂
  35. charissa Stover says:
    Reading with your apricot tea and rosemary shortbread on a fairly cold day here in Texas. We rarely turn on the heat(we wish we lived in a colder climate) and the temp inside reads 61 We love the cold 🙂 Yes… I am wearing my jacket inside. I am so upset that it is the last episode!!!!!! I have decided to rewatch every season until next January so i can remember every little detail and outfit. I love all your pictures and live vicariously through them. Thanks for sharing all that you do. I always feel so cozy after one of your posts:) So excited for you to be published in Chinese. What an accomplishment. They are going to eat you up;) The Year of the Lamb… how perfect!
    • sbranch says:
      Sweet thing to say Charissa — and I love your apricot tea and rosemary shortbread . . . sounds musical!
  36. Fabienne says:
    My Sunday’s will never be the same when Downton ends next season! Love all your ideas for storylines. I pray Isobel does not marry. I thought dr. Carlson liked her so much but he didn’t put up any fight for her….they would be the perfect match! I agree, poor dog has a rotten name and now has to be eliminated. Soon Edith’s secret will be out, but happy for her.
    LOL when Violet told Mary off. Out here in CA we are having springtime weather…will send you a little bit of warm sunshine. I adore the bird photos…we too feed our wild birds and call them our pets….they are self reliant when we want to go out! Enjoy the clean room!
    • sbranch says:
      How they thought they could have a decent dinner party with Lord Merton’s sons attending is beyond me. Have a wonderful California day Fabienne!
  37. Julia says:
    Enjoyed your Downton run down. I don’t think Isis is being shown the door due to his name. If you think about it, about 12 years has gone by and that is a long time for a Lab. I feel it is more of a natural progression for his “character”. Maybe a new puppy for Christmas episode? That would be fun. I think I could read a book of Violet’s quotes! The one about vulgarity and compassion was classic and so true. She is a gem!
  38. I can’t remember the last time we had snow, maybe 8 years ago, but your blog post made me officially cosy! I brewed a pot of tea and fired up the UK version of the Downton episode to watch it for the fourth time. Don’t hate me, I bought the DVD last month! As for Tom and Mary, I was thinking it would be better for Tom and Edith to marry. This episode made me officially hate Mary. She’s NOT normal. She’s horrid! Off to feed my birdies …. you’ve inspired me once again!
  39. Cindy from West Chester PA says:
    I too agree with Tom and Mary getting together. So sad about Isis, but I thought it was handled very sweetly. I think Cora is the true heart and soul of the family. This week’s episode showed a stronger side of her. She will not be dismissed or cast aside when it comes to her children. Especially since women didn’t have much say in those day. Loved the scene with Cora, Violet, and Rosamund. When Cora said she is going to go to the magazine and see if she can find out where Edith is Violet replies ” I am not going. But I’ll have a horrible day worrying. Trust me”.
    Cora: How can you imagine I will ever trust you again?
    Rosamund: She doesn’t mean it Mama.
    Violet: On the contrary, it is the most honest thing she has ever said to me.
    I love the dialogue on this show. It is a rich as the fashion and atmosphere.
    You inspired me last winter to put out food for the birds. I have been doing it everyday. Once again it is the simple things that bring such joy. I can tell be their singing, regardless of the wind and snow, spring is coming. Maybe it is just hiding around the corner waiting to make a grand entrance.
    Stay warm and thanks for the blog today.
    Cindy (piemom00) from West Chester
    • sbranch says:
      SO happy for your birds! They sure need us right now . . . everything they might like to eat is covered in snow!
  40. Sarah says:
    I think I’ve told you about the show, “Manor of Speaking” that is on our PBS station after Downton airs. One of the tweets this week from a viewer said, “Julian Fellowes, I survived Sybil’s death, Matthew’s death, I would welcome Edith’s death, 🙂 but ISIS? How could you?” 🙂
    That dog has been alive since the sinking of the Titanic, though, and we are now in 1924, so I guess it is inevitable. One viewer reminded us to just remember Isis is being played by a healthy dog who is acting her paws off! 🙂
    Team Tom and Mary! 🙂
    • sbranch says:
      Terrible! LOL . . . we are so bad! But it’s easy to be cavalier with non-existent people! Team Tom and Mary!
  41. Karen says:
    I do so hope that Mary and Edith happen upon a shared bonding moment before the series has ended. I just know that Mary has the potential for compassion and I long to see it manifested! Violet’s chastisement was spot on, but I have faith in Mary.
    Your bird photos are just lovely! Are you using your phone to capture these jewels?
    I would love to get some tea recommendations from you. I have been drinking Two Leaves and a Bud tea for the past couple of years, but would like to experiment in something new…any suggestions?
    Thanks for sharing your hospitable gifts!
    • sbranch says:
      I agree, I do see potential. For tea, go to my webstore. I found a tea manufacturer who let me make teas of my own . . . there are some really wonderful ones there. I’m crazy about the Earl Grey with lavender and rose petals . . . but there are some others.
  42. Nancy says:
    Oh Susan,
    You are right about Tom and Mary. My gal friends think so too. You had the perfect plan for them and Dowwton. We are sure going to miss the program on Sunday evenings. We have to remember good things are coming..
    Spring and the Red Sox!
    Love your pics of the snow and birds.
    Nancy
  43. Bonnie says:
    Once again I read and smile, except the thought of the end of Downton. I do like to watch the Selfridge series and I guess it is replacing Downton. Love the bird and snow pictures as I sit in Texas at 47°.
  44. Vicki says:
    The word I find is magnificent. Your photos are magnificent. The snow is magnificent. C’est magnifique. (I bet that’s spelled wrong!)
    Congrats on future fame in China.
    Will you watch the Oscars this coming weekend? Are you into that?
  45. Elly says:
    Thank you for another wonderful blog entry! I enjoyed reminiscing along with you about Sunday’s Downton Abbey episode!
    I am trying to stay warm, but it has been difficult, to say the least. You know it’s cold outside, when you set the thermostat at 70, but the temperature in the house stays at 60. You have a space heater going, on the four season porch, and even though you have it set for 65, it registers 44 degrees Fahrenheit! 🙂 Baby, it’s COLD outside!! It’s toughest on teachers and the schoolkids, who have to stay indoors for recess, because the windchill is minus 12-14 and colder the rest of the week. Oh, the joys of Winter! At least we know Spring IS on its way, and is just around the corner! It can’t come soon enough!
    I am looking forward to doing some Spring cleaning soon, throwing open the windows and airing everything out!
    In the meantime, I will just DREAM!!
    Enjoy the rest of your week, Susan!
  46. Lynn McMahon says:
    ~ Good Afternoon~
    I have to say I love almost every single bit of clothes the women of that show and era wore ~ I have pictures of my grandma in some beautiful clothes from the 20’s but not quite as ~fancy~ She too bobbed her hair and she too did NOT look like a monkey! (the stylists quote from the episode before ~when Mary got her hair cut) ~ Poor Isis~ my heart melted when Cora said to put her in bed between them~ made me cry~ And Edith and Isobel ~ and Tom~ I think Edith and Tom should be together! ~ she yearns to be a real mother to her daughter and can’t ….yet ~ I just don’t see that quality in Mary ~besides she’s just not as nurturing and seems to like to play the field? ~ I wouldn’t want Tom to get hurt!~ Tom and Edith both are broken hearted and they feel like misfits~ maybe together they could take a little “stiffness” out of the others?~And then there’s Isobel ~ I don’t think Isabel was really feeling “in love” it was feeling more like her last chance at love? ~ Those boys would make her life miserable the way the carry on~ At least Rose is happy…..oh well ~ We shall see……!
    • sbranch says:
      I’ll take it any way it goes. Fun to try and figure it out!
      • Diana says:
        I agree with the the the Tom and Edith situation. He was always so kind to her and supported her when she wanted todo different things, so I’m hoping they can make each other happy! Yeah for Rose, boo to those horrid without a bit of manners sons of Lord Meryton. He should have stood up for Isobel, so I don’t see her going on with the wedding. LOVED that Grannies can set Mary in her place. I just don’t get why Mary continues to be so mean to her only sibling! Oh the view across your street is gorgeous. I love that house!!!!! I would enjoying seeing the inside! I could be a house peeping Tom. Lol. Loved your post! Keep your fire going and the kettle on, am savoring our first bout with winter snow! Happy Day!
    • Margot~~~Virginia Beach says:
      I agree, I hate to see Tom get hurt or critized everyday of his life by Mary.
  47. Chris Myers says:
    Love everything you do! The pictures of the snow look wonderful! Living in England I can only dream of snowdrifts. We do have drifts of snowdrops though at the moment and I do marvel at them! Tea and crackling fires keep me cozy and then reading your posts keep me smiling. Thank you. Xxx
  48. Lynn Hamilton says:
    How fun to read your review of Downton~perhaps in addition to being an artist, writer, chef, kitty-lover, photographer, hostess of tea parties, sharer of wisdom, and reminding us to find joy in all the little things we sometimes tend not to observe, you could be a British television reviewer and you and Joe and the kitties would live in England and revel us with all your adventures 🙂 and your astute impressions of all things British, television programs at the top of the list. I can relate to all the white in your photographs, too. Here in upstate NY, we are definitely not experiencing a wimpy winter although your Smallville certainly has been buried~I keep your encouragement about Spring in my heart~while trying to enjoy the layers of clothing and bundling before I venture outside. Thank you for sharing your thoughts and photos with us~
    • sbranch says:
      Now see that’s it, my new calling! 🙂 How fun that would be, to be a person who just sees things and writes about them. But of course I only want the good things so I get to say nice things and break no hearts!
  49. Heartsdesire says:
    Oh my, dear Jack looks so sweet in your arms, so comfortable. There’s a lot of snow to look at. Loved your run down on Downton. Isn’t it sad that there is only one episode left this year, and next year will be the end? I wonder what they will replace it with. I think you’re right about Mary and Tom, they make a great pair. And what did you think of her new hair cut? I think the death of Isis brought Cora and Robert more firmly together. Now they can get on with life and forget about the man in her bedroom. Your birds look very fat and sassy, wish we had those beautiful cardinals here on the south coast of Vancouver Island. We do have lots of birds around now: robins, chickadees, the odd hummingbird, but none as colourful as those cardinals. Lovely to have your studio cleaned up. I always have to put everything away when I finish a quilt before I start another one. Hope you are able to stay warm and cozy inside, and the snow melts at a reasonable rate so no one gets flooded.
  50. Carol says:
    I love reading your blog and seeing pictures of the neighborhood. It reminds me of Little Women for some reason. I am sad that next season is the last one for Downton Abbey. I’m pretty sure Anna is going to end up in prison, not Mr. Bates. I love all the costumes and styles. Rosamund hasn’t really worn a flattering hat all season! Do you think the princess will be found?
  51. Gail Golden says:
    Greetings from sunny, balmy 70+ degrees Florida. (don’t hate me). Yes, that episode was soooooo good. That coat Edith wore, and the hat, were magnificent. I just drooled over the beaded dresses at the dinner party, and I adore those jeweled headpieces and the necklaces that hang down the back. I loved it so much that I watched it a second time. I have a crush on all of the china, silver, and crystal….oh!
    Now…I’m with you about Isobel. She will be making her life miserable if she marries Merton because those brat boys are spoiled! They’ll never accept her. And the look on her face said it all when he said “they take after thier mother in every way”. I thought, “Why doesn’t he tell those boys to get in the car and leave him alone?” (signs of trouble ahead, I”m telling ya)
    I think Tom and Edith would be a better match. Mary is just too self-centered. She could go to America and start a new life with him and Marigold.
    Violet is my absolute favorite of all the characters. Her quips are sublime!
    Thanks for the heads up about next week being the last episode of the season. I will relish it and pine away until next year. But, I can also watch the shows over and over again on my ROKU.
    So glad you posted this….I have no one to talk to about this show. (Hubby endures it, but doesn’t share my fascination.) I feel better now…
    So glad you posted. Watching the news of the snow storms in your area and thinking of you and Joe, hoping you were ok. I always look forward to your posts and your musica.
    Blessings,
    GG
    • sbranch says:
      One more week after next week . . . two more episodes . . . two, very important, not one! Yay! Did I just make your day?
  52. Kathryn Rehrig says:
    Snow, snow, snow…living in the shadow of Syracuse, I understand what it’s all about but my 72 year old self still loves snow, I can’t help it, it makes everything so absolutely gorgeous especially when the sun shines and casts lovely shadows on everything. So good to know someone else loves it too!
    Your Downton Abbey analysis cracked me up. I love them all too and isn’t it amazing how all these made up characters actually live in our minds. Cudos to Mr. Fellows for creating such an amazing show. Tom and Mary? It never crossed my mind; I am so distraught that he may leave for America but what a wonderful solution to EVERYTHING!
  53. Paulette says:
    Loved this post! Rooting for Mary and Tom myself. Love all the beautiful photos of the birds and the SNOW! It is frigid here in Ohio as well. We will welcome Spring this year just that much more!
  54. Penny says:
    I had to jump past all the ‘Downton’ chat because although we have had Series 5 here last autumn, I am only catching up with it on DVD now, and have only got to episode 4! Hard to tear my eyes away from your words but I forced myself! Your winter birds are so pretty. I put out bird food too, but the big, ugly, greedy crows come and chase all the smaller ones away, and guzzle all the food. I stand guard at the window and when I see the crows coming I rap on the glass and shout ‘Picturesque Birds Only!’ in my crow-scaring voice (very loud, quite fierce). Glad to hear you and Joe and the cats are enjoying the snow and managing to stay cosy too. I like the idea of stove-warmed shoes. My dad used to ‘cook’ his hat in the microwave for minute or so before he ventured outside on cold days. It worked very well until my mum caught him! X
    • sbranch says:
      LOL Yes, only the picturesque birds allowed. A few hours ago I was holding Jack up to the window, he was mesmerized by something, we were upstairs, and suddenly about 8 seagulls took off from our driveway under the bird feeders. That was very strange. I found out Joe had put some crackers out there . . . we’ve never had a seagull in our yard ever before that I know of, how did they find us? Do they just smell crackers?
      • Penny says:
        I think seagulls are just SURVIVORS! They steal food wherever they can find it, it’s not uncommon for them to steal sandwiches from the hands of people having a picnic on the beach. My youngest son still remembers having in ice cream cone swiped from his hand as a toddler by a smash-and-grab seagull! They are ruthless scavengers, and will travel to get food. Perhaps the bad weather has brought them to your rich pickings at the bird feeders? X
        • sbranch says:
          I know, but the crackers were in a sort of “gully” between the two-story house and the two-story barn, they were light beige, the ground is white, we have never put food there like that before, ever, and we never see them around (except of course, we’re an island, so we actually see quite a lot of them, just not around the house!). How did they know? I guess they make it their business to know!
  55. Kathryn Rehrig says:
    Snow, snow, snow…living in the shadow of Syracuse, I understand what it’s all about but my 72 year old self still loves snow, I can’t help it, it makes everything so absolutely gorgeous especially when the sun shines and casts lovely shadows on everything. Take care and keep warm!!
  56. Esther says:
    We are enjoying our first!, yes first, big snow of the season here in the Missouri Ozarks. Usually we are done with snow by now. I always enjoy your Downton recaps, it is going to take some doing to wrap that whole story up isn’t it ? Enjoy your cleaning before you get on with the next project!
    • Patsy in Nixa, MO says:
      Hi Esther,
      Not sure where you are, but this was our first snow, as well. I post a photo every day for my friends and family. Today’s was “Snowplows – the solution or the problem? Hmmmmmm!” I was fine until the snowplow came through and now I have snow piled all across the end of my driveway. Started melting today, so hopefully I can get out to buy a trunk load of cat food tomorrow. That’s one thing I make sure is never in short supply.
      • sbranch says:
        Yes, we have to shovel the work of the snowplow every day. Notice I use the word “we” — ha ha. So wrong.
        • Rhonda D. says:
          I bought a very funny book about living in New Brunswick. It was written and illustrated by a cartoonist. One page said “you’re mad when the plow doesn’t show up” and the opposite page said “you’re mad when the plow does show up.”
  57. Kathy Phenix says:
    Wonderful post. Wonderful summary of Downton. I had tears in my eyes when Isis was offered a bed between Cora and Robert. So sad to watch a furry family member breath her/his last. Hopefully, they’ll have a funeral for her next week so we can all have closure.
    I am really feeling bad for all the people of New England, my birth place. How are you tolerating it all? You and Joe are lucky in that you don’t have to leave home to get to work but I’m sure it’s starting to wear on you anyway. My husband was just commenting that he remembers some very bad storms (retired CT state trooper) but “the sun always came out” in a few days and it melted away. This isn’t melting at all because of the extreme cold. I pray that it ends soon for all of you. Kathy in FL
    • sbranch says:
      I’ve been so busy I haven’t had time to register anything other than how pretty it is . . . It’s good to be trapped when you have a lot you want to do!
  58. Judy Smithmyer says:
    I believe last Sunday’s DA was my favorite this season thus far. I so agree with your take on DA. My wish is for Mary and Tom to be together as well, but she is so hard to please…could he truely make her happy?
    And thank you for giving me something to look forward to each week with your commentaries of DA and wonderful snowy pictures of birds.
    I live in the south but am from the North, so this makes me feel nostagic.
  59. Pat Mofjeld says:
    Another question is this: Will the mystery of who pushed Mr. Green ever be solved? Y’know, the other person who knew what a creep he was, was Mrs. Hughes!!! 🙂 The name of the dog–yes, unfortunate in these times–but is there a meaning of that name that I am just not aware of, like is it from classic literature or something? I think someone should collaborate with Mr. Fellows and do a reverse–write a book of Downton Abbey! They would have to do it carefully but then it could continue on after next year’s series… 🙂
    • sbranch says:
      I think there might be books on Downton Abbey . . . in fact I think each season may have its own book. Unless I dreamed that too.
      • Patsy in Nixa, MO says:
        More on Isis. I looked up the dates and Aida was first performed in Dec. 1871 – probably too early for a connection. I stand corrected. I read that Verdi was actually supposed to compose a hymn for the opening of the canal. But the first performance of Aida was in Cairo.
        Now, remember that the real 5th Earl of Carnarvon was involved in the discovery of King Tut’s tomb? That was 1922. When do you suppose Isis was born? Isn’t this fun?
        I guess if we really want the answer, we have to ask Julian why he named her Isis.
    • Patsy in Nixa, MO says:
      Yes, there is another meaning for Isis. She was the Egyptian goddess of wisdom, health, and marriage.
      If I’m not mistaken, in the last act of Aida, when Aida and Radames are going to die in the tomb, Aida was praying to Isis. Aida was produced to celebrate the opening of the Suez Canal, so maybe all things Egyptian were still in vogue when the puppy was named? Or maybe because of the discovery of King Tut’s tomb? I’d have to look up the dates, and then I would lose my comment. By then I’d have a senior moment and forget I was even working on a comment. I’ll make myself a note to work on this.
  60. Micaela Sullivan-Fowler says:
    I saw your post regarding a cup of tea come across Facebook, and ran into the workroom and microwaved water; found an old tea bag, some old non-dairy creamer, grabbed a stale cinnamon rice cake- ran back to my computer, looked up the blog post and thought…”Susan can even make a second-rate work produced cup of tea taste like heaven.” Thanks for the afternoon break, the synopsis and the photos. You’re better than a snail mail card in my mailbox…
  61. Sharon says:
    I love your Downton recaps! Always laugh-out-loud entertaining, and so insightful. This one is a treasure. Only one more season? Say it ain’t so… Anyway, yes, I would be most interested in getting a copy of A Fine Romance in Chinese! If it can be made to happen, that would be a lot of fun! (I hope you’re practicing writing your name in Chinese, for the signed copies?) And your “Haven” is sooo very beautiful in the snow; your wonderful photos are a real treat for a San Diegan to see. Stay warm, and thanks for your postings!
  62. Laura Croyle says:
    Noooo! Say it isn’t so! Next season will be Downton’s last???
  63. Angela Roberts says:
    Snowed-in here near Cumberland Gap, TN. Love your blog and Downton hopes and observations. Violet always gets the best lines. So glad the USPS made it through today to deliver my Susan Branch 2015 Calendar! Love love it!!! I am also loving your book, and am almost to Beatrix Potter’s Farm. We visited some of the same places that you did, but our memories were made in September 2011, just before you went. Keep on creating in your newly organized study.
  64. Audrianne Hill says:
    Dear Susan,
    You were too kind when it came to Mary Crawley. I thought her behavior just awful. She has never shown Edith an ounce of compassion or empathy about anything.
    I was thrilled when Lord Merton told his son to leave the table and wait in the car and then Tom called him a “bastard” to boot. I don’t know who showed more lack of manners – Larry or Miss Bunting – both doing out of spite for the class into which they were born.
    I thought Violet’s comments regarding her friendship with Isobel to have been so sweet and real, and her honesty toward Cora’s comments regarding whether Cora could ever trust her again to be spot on. Cora should have been in on things from the very beginning (however then we would not have had a storyline).
    On a completely different note – each time I hear that another storm is heading towards Boston, I think of you. I admire your ability to stay positive. Me, I have thrown in the towel. I am done with winter. Thank goodness Spring is only 33 days away.
  65. Chris says:
    Dear Susan, You always give us more than we expect to read. Being born & bred Bostonians we are spending this winter putting all our efforts into staying innocent of the bad thoughts friends and family are thinking cause we moved to The Sunshine State. We put our guest room up for bids but so far no one can make their way to the airport before the next round of flight cancellations. I can just see the line of people moving in and out when the snow breaks while I keep busy changing the sheets! In the meantime there are almost no lines at Disney World and all the hotels have vacancies.
    Since Florida is all sand, I usually have a strange fee for guests – they have to bring me a rock (I have some from as far as Austrailia) but since rocks in New England are as scarce as they as in Florida right now, a couple lobsters would be a nice substitution. :-).
  66. Megan Hyatt says:
    Isis is the Egyptian goddess of health, marriage and wisdom. What is so unfortunate about that name? Spare a thought for the people named Isis, we need to move past an obsession with terrorists and stop pillorying people who now find their name has been hijacked by a band or idiots.
    • Denise S says:
      Megan, I am late in this comment but I wholeheartedly agree with you. If we actually believe that the dog needed to be eliminated because of an unfortunate coincidence in name then where are we?
    Hello Susan, is it OK to have snow envy? Gorgeous photos♥ I’m ahead with Downton and bought the series while in UK at Christmas time♥ Last week the Christmas episode from Amazon UK arrived, sigh I was very sad knowing I have to wait another year for the next series:( I have to say Downton is my all time favourite TV series♥ Ha ha I won’t give away any of the plots! I’m devastated that the next series could be the last. Fingers crossed you are able to speak with Julian:) Hope spring isn’t too far away. We really don’t get seasons (sadly) where we live:( Have a wonderful week ahead. Linda xx from Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia – our motto “beautiful one day perfect the next”
  68. Betsy in Pennsylvania says:
    I probably sound crazy but I was hoping Tom and Edith would get together. Edith is a good soul and the lost sheep of the family. She is kind and would never be as mean as Mary. When she looks at Marigold you see total love. Tom could help her see the value of Downton. She also now owns the publishing company left to her which would help support Downton. Edith needs someone to love her. It was wonderful to see an update from you and the beautiful pictures. Thank you Susan, stay warm. xoxoxo
  69. Patti says:
    I too enjoy your blogs so very much and agree that Mary and Tom are appropriately suited for one another…for all the same reasons you stated! I am so sad that next season will be their last…I think Mr. Fellowes is making a mistake.
  70. Lauren Naudain says:
    Hi Susan…you are having the most amazing “New Englandy” winter–all tucked in with your best guy and your snuggly kitties, crackling fires and good food. Nice job girlfriend, with the endless, beautiful snow storm plan. Now, on to Downton. I enjoyed your review more than the show, Susan. Good stuff, my dear and a “heck yes” (no potty mouth here) 🙂 to everything. I too loved Tom And Sybie playing Pooh sticks, and I do think Mary is a better person when married to a good man. Cora was a firecracker… her anger at not being told, the way she fearlessly got her daughter and granddaughter home, and, (my heart breaking) tucking Isis into their bed so she would not be alone or afraid. So… thank you, Susan for a really entertaining spot in my day. Such fun!
  71. Margot~~~Virginia Beach says:
    That little cubby bird is like the one who sings to me early in the morning! I love him. I haven’t seen my cardinal couple lately.
    Keep warm!
  72. Sandra Mailey says:
    Such a treat to “click into the blog ” and find a new post!! Somehow I think it might sound rather pathetic, but it just makes my day! I should probably “get a life”.
    I’m trying really not to think about life without the prospect of a new episode of Downton Abbey. We all knew it couldn’t last forever, but it’s sad to contemplate the fact that the end is in sight. We all know that these people are fictitious, but they do seem so real that it will be difficult to say good-bye to them. I know I will continue to wonder where they are and what they are doing. Oh well, life must go on, and we don’t really need to come to terms with all this until next March. Let’s not think about it now…
    Let’s hope you have made it through the last “winter blast” for this year. It can snow a bit from time to time until Spring arrives next month, but maybe the winter will be a little more ‘regular’ from hear on out. I’m sure you are enjoying your clean studio, and are gearing up to work on the new book. We are all so looking forward to reading it!!
    Have a wonderful week! XOXO
  73. Oh, Susan! I LOVE your post, read every word and will come back and re-read some parts. Hilarious parts. I ADORE Downton and Jack! Lol Be warm.
    Hugs,
    Linda at Beautiful Ideas
  74. Lee Rose says:
    And Tom and Mary’s great grandchildren will keep Downton going by selling organic scones, honey from the estate hives, and sausage from the free range pigs.
  75. Susan Martin says:
    Thank you for such an entertaining blog post! I am so liking the whole “(This is probably much too deep considering these people do not actually exist and there will be no marriage or relationship to be inside or out of?) I’m the same way, be it with movies, books, or TV. I get so invested in the characters; probably all the girlfriends are this way! We’re a fun, funny bunch!
    And I agree with Jennifer – great bird pictures! So close!
    Stay warm, and again, thank you!
    Susan in PA
  76. Chris Wells In Knickerbocker, W TX says:
    I love your synopsis of Downton! I really hope that it turns out the way we want it to…….but my biggest concern is what in the world are we going to do with “NO DOWNTON”. And that sweet little 17 year old Martha was cut from The Great British Baking Show. She reminded me so much of my Granddaughter who is always cooking and baking. She and I made Mother Effie’s bread a couple of weeks ago! It was so good!
    Your winter is beautiful…….but it really is time to move on….my clematis has tiny little yellow buds…..spring is trying really hard to get here, and underneath all your snow the snow drops are waiting!
    Stay warm.
    Chris….where even we had a dusting of snow this morning in West Tx.
    • sbranch says:
      OH NO, they cut Martha? I’ve been so afraid that would happen that I tried to not look at the show! Darn it!
      • Chris Wells In Knickerbocker, W TX says:
        I knew she could never make it to the end…..but 17 years old…are you kidding me?! How talented is that young lady! And such a sweet girl; her parents must be so proud of her. I could bake by the time I was 17, but not like that young lady! I dislike the technical portion of the contest. It seems very unfair to me to not give a complete recipe and say “figure it out”…..harrumph!!
        • sbranch says:
          I could bake too, but I laughingly call it ‘Baking’ when I see what Martha did! How did she learn that in her short life? Her mom must be very special.
        • Margot~~~Virginia Beach says:
          I agree with the “figure it out”. Give me the recipe!!
  77. Betsy Cronin says:
    Thank you Susan for a much needed cozy blog post today! Yes, it continues to snow on us and I’m told that more is on the way. But perhaps it will miss…if we are lucky that is. I love your Downton recaps, however, I do think that Lady Mary has re-discovered a bit of her “crusty” lately. Matthew was able to tame that a bit, and while I applaud her embracing independence, it doesn’t seem right that she should be so nasty to Edith all the time. I mean, of all people to know what it is like to lose a love, it is she! At any rate, she always looks fabulous! Love the hair. What about Mr. Bates finding the “secret” that Anna was keeping for Mary??!! I am so glad it turned out for the best- and even better now that we know that Mr. Bates never got on that train! But WHO?? Poor Isis – so sad- I must confess I cried during the last ten minutes. You know, I did hear that someone has approached Julian Fellowes about taking over the writing of Downton so it can continue. Who knows? We might not have to say good-bye after all! ~Betsy
  78. Bobbye Moore says:
    Oh that Mary and Tom would “find” each other; but wait, what about Edith? She said she would talk to him…….would she do more? Could he be a father to Marigold (and who names their child Marigold?)? And Isis was Isis before these horrible people started doing unspeakable things. How sad that there is only one more episode to wrap all this up.
    • Lynn McMahon says:
      Hi~
      Flower names were very popular in the early 1900- 20’s . Mt grandma’s name was Rose~ really Rosemary and her sister’s name was Lily ~ I wonder if she would ever call her Mary?~ I don’t think she named her that with the thought using the shorter version) after her sister…..?
      • Bobbye Moore says:
        Surely she didn’t have Mary in mind!!! I, too, like most flower names; but Marigold…..not so much.
  79. Gina D. says:
    We call that kind “Charlie Brown snow!”
  80. Linda Tuskey says:
    I have been despairing that not one friend of mine is as eager as I am to talk and speculate about Downton Abbey. Thank you, Susan, and you, Girlfriends, for being my chat buddies. Please share any of your surmising and your joy in those clothes.
    The scene with Tom and Sybie at the bridge is right out of Winnie the Pooh! I had just read it to my granddaughter. A precious scene revealing much about Tom and his wishes for Sybie. I do not believe he will leave.
    Maggie Smith has as much skill in what she doesn’t say as in what she does. When her easily annoyed butler leaves the room, her body language and expressions are priceless. Her leaving the Drews’ house scene with no words told us a lot about her attitude and her strength.
    I have been trying to check out Gosford Park at the library for weeks, but the many copies are always gone. I guess there are many of us who want to see Maggie Smith in that, too. Julian Fellowes modeled that Maggie Smith character after his great aunt as well as the dowager character.
    I hope there are surprises in these last two episodes of Downton, something we can’t foresee. Isn’t Fellowes clever to have a Jewish character in the story since we are approaching the horror of Hitler’s Germany? Edith’s beau was killed in a brawl related to Adolph Hitler for which Hitler was sentenced to five years in prison, of which he served only months, as was predicted by Lord Granthem.
    Garath Neame, Downton’s executive producer, has said that all of the parts of the Downton experience are top quality – setting, characterization, story, costumes, acting, production. He is absolutely right and we are the beneficiaries.
    But who killed Mr. Green? Not Bates. Thomas? Some unknown person? Larry Merton?
  81. Helen says:
    An interesting DA twist in real life…..Michelle Dockery (Lady Mary) just became engaged and her now fiance was introduced to her by Allen Leech (Tom). Can you just imagine if Lady Mary and Tom bring on the kissing……..and they are explaining to her fiance/his friend…….oh bosh…..no need to be jealous…..We are just playing our parts! 🙂
  82. kay says:
    Just finished reading “A Fine Romance ” and loved it ! Thank you so much for a great book.
  83. Rochelle says:
    I’m spending time with my dad while his wife is on the hospital. Reading your blog has been a daily companion in the hospital’s cafeteria. Thank you for bringing me a breath of joy in this hard time. Love and kisses!
  84. Pom Pom says:
    I love your rundown on Downton and I agee with it all!
    The birds! They are so lovely! We don’t have cardinals
  85. Holly says:
    Hello everyone! Susan! I too have had a secret hope of Mary & Tom. It’s the only ending that would EVER work, and one most of us would LOVE! Right? of course!
    Your photos should be Christmas Cards, and you could write the messages and have a cute drawing inside. There you go… another product! Anyway, I do love seeing what it looks like there. It’s snowing again in Indiana today. It’s so cold that my bunnies in the barn need me to replace their water several times (4) in 24 hours, because it freezes so fast. I only have 9 beautiful (angora, dutch, california, & mixed) bunnies that I just adore. I brought a small buck into the house last night because he lives alone and seemed too cold. The girls live in pairs and are much warmer. My 3 cats are loving this bunny, but they think he’s another cat. They are playing together…. so cute!
    My sympathy to all the New Englanders. I too feel bad for those who must get to work. Luckily I work in my quilting studio, right here at home.
    I adore your synopsis of Downton! The elegance of the costumes is amazing. I wish people still dressed in real clothes. Not the slinky half-naked dresses that some want to wear today. The details in the clothes really make the show authentic. Loved the blog today!
    • sbranch says:
      The pleats in the coats? I wish there was more of that . . . and less spandex.
      • Margot~~~Virginia Beach says:
        Me too! My mom would make new coats for us from old ones of adults and coats with new material too. I had a pink one. The other day I saw a woman wearing a pink coat that looked like a similar material. She said she found it at a thrift store. I liked the fabric in the Sixties, before the double knits came out.
  86. Judy Jennings says:
    Susan! I just now discovered the Downton Abbey special, with all the actors spoofing their own show. Did everyone know about this except me? I found it on a friend in England’s Facebook page and copied it to mine. It was filmed as a fundraiser and you will LOVE IT. It is full of surprises (it runs about five minutes I think). If you Google “Downton Abbey Text Santa” it will come up and you can watch it. It’s from last Christmas 2014. PLEASE watch it. I’m amazed that they filmed something funny, spoofing themselves; I’ll bet they had fun doing it. I’ve watched it about ten times! Please watch it!
    PS I’m your biggest fan.
  87. CarolK says:
    What fun to hear everyone’s take on DA but I don’t think Mary is sweet tempered enough to be partnered with Tom. If they got together I could foresee a very messy d-i-v-o-r-c-e down the road. I can picture Tom and Edith though. They would make a sweet, loving couple and great parents. Just saying…….
    • sbranch says:
      At least he would know what he’s getting into. She doesn’t pretend with him, although she is extra sweet whenever they talk to each other. But I’m also fine with Edith! Love is love, and let’s have a lot of it!
  88. shirley burt says:
    A delightful way to spend some moments on the computer. Snow stories with amazing pictures with adorable birds included, Downton Abbey discussion about storylines and fashion, and spending moments reading everyone’s comments. My reward for embroidering the panels for the Over the River and Through the Woods future quilt. Only “Over” to complete, but eyes are tired of sewing 6 hours today was long enough. But a clean studio for you-Yippee-it is like my sewing room, it becomes unbelievably messy during, but once it gets clean, it becomes a symbol of Yes, something is completed. Well done, Susan. So happy to see you, Joe and the fur babies staying safe and warm, and the feathered friends well fed. Thank you, thank you for sharing bits of your life.
    Love and bunny hugs,
    Shirley in Aledo, Tx
    • sbranch says:
      I love embroidery, always have and always will. I can just picture you. It was my first creative love. I used to get the bibs with the printed blue designs and embroider them for my baby brothers and sisters.
      • shirley burt says:
        I have only recently taken embroidery back up. My mother, grandmother, great grandmother all did embroidery so must be a genetic thing I am happy to say. I started my Over the river quilt embroidery when I was visiting in Leicester, England in September. I just completed the last panel today, tomorrow piecing the flying geese blocks and star blocks. My next embroidery will be teapots and hankies as the tablecloths. It will be so cute. Yes, yes, I started with the printed bibs. Such fond memories.
        Stay warm. The daffodils have bloomed in the back yard and looks so bright and cheerful, saying the cold will not last forever.
        Much love and bunny hugs,
  89. Beth says:
    Great post…so fun to read your take on all things DA. I didn’t know we are only 12 episodes (or so) from DA ending. SO SAD about that!
    I do have a question: Ded anyone else feel bad for Mrs. Drew? To have a child she raised quite literaly torn from her arms. Sigh!
    Btw, I think Isobel will back out of the marriage…certainly wouldn’t blame her! What brats those boys are!!
    I have started watching Grandchester (on after DA here in 75˚ CA) and I love it. Certainly worth a try if you haven’t yet (but then, you do need to like mysteries, which I do. The British do them so well…).
    • sbranch says:
      Mrs. Drew — so unfair! Yes, much as I like Lord Merton, I would not marry him with those horrible children living in the same house with us. No way!
      • shirley burt says:
        I agree with both statements. !!!!!! Run back to that sweet doctor and forget the Lord. And how sad for Mrs. Drew. She loves Marigold so much.
  90. Mary Lawrence aka Mi Mi Elizabeth says:
    Oh Susan it’s like you read my mind! I told my husband I hope Tom and Mary end up married. It will be a plus for everyone. I would love a copy of your book in Chinese.Tasha Tudor had a few books translated into Japanese. I have them and they seem to be more beautiful than the English translation. lol The Chinese fonts are so beautiful. I, like you are now snowed in. I love the quiet and being snowbound. I so enjoy your blog and look forward to it. Mary Elizabeth
  91. Linda Pintarell says:
    Beautiful snow pix AND birdie pix. They look well fed! Don’t know if I can watch DA now that I know about the dog – will need to pick a day when I need a good cry alone. I don’t cry gracefully and it’s a choking sob – and I ALWAY cry if a dog dies. So it might be a few days.
    I’m feeling for all those that are suffering from the COLD. Having been born and raised in Southern CA, I have no idea what it must be like. I would like the snuggley, inside by warm fire for a few days, BUT… Anyway, stay safe, Miz Susan…and warm .
    • sbranch says:
      Isis has a very small part in this episode. We don’t see suffering, he’s wrapped in a blanket and it’s very short. You can just tell yourself it isn’t happening, and I think you’ll get away with it. That’s what I did and I didn’t even cry; as far as I’m concerned, it didn’t happen.
  92. CathyG says:
    I can’t believe next week is the last episode of the season for Downton Abby!! Seems like it just started! It is over way too soon. And I will be so sad when it’s over for good next year. Love, love, love the show.
    Love your pics of a snowy Martha’s. We got our first snow yesterday, here on the coast of Maryland. I am so ready for warm weather.
    Love your kitties! I have a black and white 15 year old baby girl. Plus 3 others – all black, grey tabby and an orange tabby. Never a dull moment!
    Stay warm!!
  93. Mary-Agnes from Long Island says:
    Loved all your photos, but my favorite was the picture of the lady cardinal chowing down, with another bird about to set down to join her. Beautiful shot!
    As for Downton Abbey, there’s been no definite say on whether next year will be the last season. About 2 weeks ago, Variety reported that the show’s executive producer more or less said that they were just concentrating on what they had to do now.
    Poor Isis! I knew where this was all heading and I still got teary-eyed at the end. Hurray for Cora! “Let her lay here between two people who love her and who love each other.” So lovely and sweet. And Isis probably got her name from the Egyptmania that swept England in the 1920s due to Lord Carnarvon and his part in the discovery of King Tut’s tomb. Fun fact: his current descendants are the current owners of Highclere Castle, where Downton Abbey is filmed.
    And poor Edith! I know she brings a lot of this on herself, but when Robert came in carrying Isis, everyone ignored Edith as she tried to explain her plan to bring Marigold into the family. I think Isis got more sympathy than Edith did when she received official word that Gregson was dead.
    And regarding that, a side note to Julian Fellowes: I adore your show, but why oh why do you keep pulling the rug out from under your loyal viewers when it comes to big scenes? Mary and Matthew’s wedding: we didn’t get to see them in the church saying “I do.” Mrs. Drewe’s meeting with Cora to tell her about Marigold was only mentioned and in the next scene was discussed with Violet and Rosamund; I thought I had missed something. And Edith receiving the official news of Gregson’s death: we didn’t actually see that happen, despite the build-up.
    Tom and Mary a couple? I don’t think so, despite the fact that I like Tom a lot. I think they’re very supportive of each other and respect each other, but that’s as far as it goes. Still, I would rather it be him than either of the bland so-called suitors Mary had this year. Neither of them thrilled me. I don’t think Mary could settle for a man who wasn’t as least as strong as she is. And thank you, Lady Violet, for putting Mary in her place by telling her that a lack of compassion was almost as vulgar as an excess of tears. Mary’s been much too cold and self-centered this season.
    I felt badly for Baxter, but at least Thomas was being nice to her, getting her to go on the trip to the farm with Daisy and Mr. Moseley, in appreciation for what she did going to the doctor with him, despite her knowing he wrote the “anonymous” letter that got her in trouble with police and forced her to speak out against Anna and Mr. Bates.
    And just who did kill Mr. Green? Perhaps Mr. Bates did it all along? He could have bought TWO railroad tickets that day, used one, and kept the other untorn one for an alibi. 😉
    • sbranch says:
      I will never forgive him for the short shrift on Mary’s wedding! They go to all the trouble to put up all that gorgeous white bunting for the trip through town, and barely show any of the wedding. It killed me!
  94. I LOVE you sharing Downton like a bestie! I didn’t know next season is the last…boo hoo! Tom and Mary must be married by then! Can;t wait to hear what you think of the season finale.
    What about Oscar night, are you excited by any of the movies or performances?
    xoxo
  95. Grace says:
    “Downton Abby ” has a real life love story. A few days ago Michelle Dockery (Lady Mary) announced her engagement to John Dineen, an Irish financier. Alan Leech (Tom Branson) introduced Michelle to his friend, John. Isn’t it great that Alan Leech played Cupid for Michelle and John?
    I hope that you will show us a page or two of the new Chinese edition of “A Fine Romance”. I cannot speak or read any Chinese but the fonts will be lovely with your beautiful art work.
    Your blogs are a ray of sunshine during this crazy winter.
    • sbranch says:
      I’ll definitely put pictures of it on the blog. It’s going to be quite a red letter day for me! Thank you Grace!
  96. Rosemary says:
    My goodness! I have had a revelation as I read your review of Downton. TRULY!!! You could write a continuation of Downton when it does come to an end (yes, I am grieving, too, already). You have the knowledge of the UK….the writing ability, the imagination, the attention to detail, the sense of humor, the gorgeous use of the language, the imagination (yes, I repeat) and not the time but we can figure that out. Please, do us the favor. I am wanting to go along with the Mary and Tom thing but cannot see “into it” as someone we know says. Susan, please do consider this proposition. I am fairly serious. Yes, the hat…I did exclaim on that hat as I watched.
    I hope you are continuing to be okay in the astounding weather developments. Glad you are not on the road somewhere. We are thinking about you. Beautiful bird pictures…all fluffed up. They sure do depend on your kindness.
    • sbranch says:
      Ha ha, yes, I could just keep writing about them as if nothing happened! 🙂 I bet someone will think of that and do it!
  97. Michaelene Hanrahan says:
    I am probably one of the few folks in the whole world who has only recently started watching Downton Abbey. I am catching up with DVDs from the library and have been completely sucked in by the whole thing. I love it and can’t wait to get on to the next episode. But I’ll tell you, my personal favorite is Doc Martin!!! Do you watch it? It doesn’t have the elegance of Downton, but it is so, so charming. Portwen is an adorable seaside town in Cornwall. It is so homey and beautiful that I know I could live there. And the SCENERY!!!!! Every week, it takes my breath away. Cliffs and the sea, and pastures with lambs and chickens and then some forest. Houses just hanging onto the sides of the hills and not a flat road in the whole town. And everyone having their cuppa.
    And Doc Martin himself!! Such a stodgy, fussy man that you can’t help but love him, like Louisa does. The show is set in present day, with computers and cell phones and all, and it STILL feels old-fashioned to me. Can you tell I LOVE it??? It feels like A Fine Romance to me when I am watching.
    Thank you for letting me go on about the Doc. I so appreciate you Susan and the glimpse into England that you have given us. Blessings to you!!!
    • sbranch says:
      You’re really not alone . . . Downton finds new converts every day. You’re really lucky, look at all the fun you get to have now! Yes, love Doc Martin too! Portwen! Gorgeous little town.
  98. Hahahah… organ grinder hat. I thought it was an odd thing — you describe in perfectly. and oh yes, those coats are wonderful, just wonderful.
    Methinks Mr. Fellowes got the very clear message that killing off key characters was not on… so dear Isis had to fill the part this season, which, I must say, she did quite well. A good little actor.
    Your post gave me the feeling that the ‘girlfriends’ were all sitting around with you at your kitchen table drinking tea, as the Downton details were rehashed and studied over. It’s your gift… and we love you for it.
    Hugs,
    Brenda
    Just saw an advertisement on TV for the new movie about Cinderella. Lady Rose is playing the lead role! ( I think her name is Lily James) 🙂
  100. Melissa Connolly says:
    Isis’ illness is so sad. I read that the actor who plays Robert suggested the story line to Mr. Fellows to mark the passage of time. I love to read your blog; it is like a present I get to open and savor every time a new one appears. Thank you!
    • sbranch says:
      Pet loss is something that happens to us all. Pet love, too. It’s good to have that kind of thing on TV — there are still some in the world who don’t understand that feeling, it’s a teachable moment. Thank you back Melissa!
