NIBBLY BITS

Nibbly Bits, what the boring old posh people get between their teeth at weddings, was definitely not going to be good enough for Mrs. Hughes. She wanted a BREAKFAST. And a bit of hooey. And me too, I wanted what she wanted! Strike up the MUSICA!

downton

And boy did we get it! Isn’t it gorgeous? Is this the schoolhouse? Because it couldn’t be more perfect. And my favorite white bunting is BACK. They had it at Mary’s wedding too. So festive!

IMG_5018

Yum!

Well, they did it again Girlfriends, I cried all the way through it! The work they put into this show, the details, the creative everything, makes me proud to be a human being. I just love this Downton Abbey. As I’m watching I can’t help but think about the things I’m going to miss.

IMG_4920

Besides the stories and the laughter and the tears, I am going to miss the Drawing Room, the prettiest most elegant room.

IMG_4921

I love the green wallpaper and how good it looks with tuxedoes, dresses, and lampshades.

IMG_4919

And this room, my absolute favorite, because of what is hanging on the walls, and the beautiful woodwork, and the draped table, and the candles. Please don’t go!

IMG_4955And this room, with the long tables and the cupboards, and the wonderful copper pots and pans and the steaming kettle. Because, just like on the show itself, for us too, all good things are coming to an end.

IMG_4930

This was such a sad little part. When poor Mr. Barrow (who only needs a partner of his own to be happy, and also for Mr. Carson to quit shoving him out the door) went to look for a job and he came into this sad house where life as it had been was pretty much all gone away and met that sweet man who lost both his sons in the war, who’d worked in this house his whole life, and was preparing for the good times to return again. So well written, hearing him remember the women climbing the stairs in the old days and the twinkling of diamonds? Tears and sadness for a lost era, where beauty reigned. Remember the garden parties? The hats? A changing world: nightmare for people we love.

IMG_4903

And how I will miss this WOMAN ~ who knows “many happy couples who haven’t spoken in years.”  The Countess of Grantham, known to her close friends like us as Violet or Granny, was in rare form last night. Accusing Mrs. Crawley of secretly drinking her lunch! I fear she will not be getting her way this time, and there may be hell to pay. I have to tell you though, I have a very difficult time telling Lord Merton and Dr. Clarkson apart. Are they the same person with different makeup. Do we ever see them in the same shot together?  Hmmmm. It seems to me one of them has got to marry Isobelle!

IMG_4950

And Edith! Life is getting so good for her!  She better snap this guy up. Anyone who rushes in to help and works into the night, must be in el-oh-ve-ee, Love! Remember Bertie? (Of course Edith would have to go with a Bertie!)  He flirted with her at the shooting party when they went to that other castle? At the time he referred to himself as an “agent” ~ I didn’t know what that was, but it didn’t sound all that royal so I wondered if he was “good” enough for Edith. Well, lo and behold, he owns that castle, he is an Earl or a Marquess or something, perfectly up to standards, and obviously a hard worker too, not a spoiled brat like some people we know. I hope he’s the one. (Edith will have to quit calling Marigold her “ward” — I’m hoping Marigold gets a new title: Flower Girl!)

IMG_4965

Fabulous! Edith took over the magazine and fired that miserable guy ~ and I bet this will be the BEST EVER ISSUE RECORDED IN THE HISTORY OF ENGLISH MAGAZINES!

IMG_4967

But look at Lady Mary’s face when Edith is receiving approval from her father.  YikesIMG_4968

Tra-la, they don’t notice! They are the normal ones! (Although I didn’t like it that Robert coughed in another scene. That struck me as a bit foreboding. I need ALL these characters to get out of this show alive.)

IMG_5026

Look who has a secret.  Look who’s smiling and perky and cute for the first time in the history of this show!!!!  Baby on board! Hooray!baby

IMG_4992

The wedding was perfect. Poor Mr. Carson, all packed up, saying good bye to his bed.

IMG_4995

And Mrs. Hughes, saying a little prayer in hers.

IMG_4972

The girlfriends working everything out in Cora’s bedroom, about how to cover the ugly brown dress so that Mrs. Hughes will look slightly better than just “tidy” on her wedding day. Oops, Lady  Mary thoughtlessly forgot to mention the idea to her mother. Uh oh.

IMG_4976So Cora hurts everyone’s feelings with unkind words like “stealing” which she was very sorry for so we forgive her instantly with her totally loving and heartfelt apology. Cora is a good person and despite what her charming daughter says, I don’t think she’s one bit a snob.

IMG_5005

And now, let the show begin! A perfect wedding . . .

hearts

IMG_5003

With lots of friends, and hopefully  some hooey what ever that is, since Mrs. Hughes wanted it.

IMG_5009

Elsie Hughes and Charles Carson, we now pronounce you man and wife ~ you may go ahead and look like you have just swallowed the cat bird. Or whatever that phrase is. While I’m busy crying.

the happy couple

I wanted to add this photo, where you can really see all the details on both of them! Our Girlfriend Angie sent it to me on Twitter ~ it’s so much better than the photos I’m taking of the TV! Aren’t they adorable? That coat!

IMG_5016

counttimebyhearthrobs

IMG_5029

And then, just as we are toasting the happy couple . . . (coat looks pretty good!) . . .

grit

Who walks into the room and MAKES MY DAY?

IMG_5032

Tom and Sibby!  They’re home! And Tom is looking straight at spoiled Lady Mary!!! And he is going to stay forever!

IMG_5033

I don’t know, I could be wrong, but it seems to me the only sensible ending for this. When all else fails, you have to go with common sense! Even if I’m wrong, I’ve already decided to be happy, so don’t let my longing and wishing upset you. I can take it.

IMG_5040

Plus, here is Sibby hugging Mary’s little boy, George, the heir of Downton Abbey. I’m just saying’.  And that’s it for another FABULOUS week of Downton Abbey. Now I will go watch it (actually I will listen to it) again, and probably one more time, while I paint away this snowy day. The whole time I’m writing to you right now, the snow plow is going up and down Birds in the snowmy street outside my window. Dawn is just now breaking, and my view is of a pure white winter wonderland Christmas card outside. Life is good. Joe is making all of our bookstore dates. The tour (30th Anniversary of first book, btw, who would have thought, not me!) starts off with a tea party and fund raiser, a talk and a signing, a big wonderful event at the new delightful bookstore called An Unlikely Story in the darling little town of Plainville, MA ~ then it’s off to RJ Julia’s in Connecticut, New Hope, PA, and from there, points west, not necessarily in this order . . .  Kansas City, St. Charles, Chicago (for another Tea Party), Cedar Rapids, Denver, Salt Lake, Danville, CA, San Luis Obispo, to Vroman’s in Pasadena, to still another delightful tea party in Prescott, Arizona (more info to come), to Book People in Austin, Texas, and right now testing watercolorswe’re working on the wonderful Parnassus Books in Tennessee, if any of you are interested in that, I’m sure it would help us if they heard from you. I think we also have stops in Arkansas and North Carolina and New Jersey planned also. And More. Keep checking COMING SOON/EVENTS in the right-hand column of the blog for new additions. We’re not done yet. I’m so looking forward to meeting you out in the real world! But FIRST, before any of that, I must complete the book and get it to the printer! That’s my job!  So, back into the rabbit hole I go dear ones. Have a wonderful day, can’t wait to hear your take on Downton, or any other thing for that matter!  Girlfriends Forever!  Love, XOXO, me.

If you do it with heart

I get excited every time I see Cedar Rapids on your event list! Have you ever watched “House of Elliot”? Search ebay if you haven’t. Another wonderful British show, 3 seasons, from the 1920s.the costumes are amazing. Stay warm in your rabbit hole.

  2. Kathy George says:

Downton so wonderful, I tried to put it out of my mind it’s the last season, I am in denial. Maggie Smith was outstanding 🙂 I have been watching the list of event stops to be sure to get to one and make a weekend of it as usual with my friend Carol and our husbands. It will be so much fun as usual. Good luck with the rest of the book on this perfect snowy New England day.

    • sbranch says:

I’m hoarding Downton. It’s really going to be a loss. We’ll be doing something at Titcombs on the Cape at the very end of the tour, just before we get on the boat to go home . . . that’s probably as close as we’ll get to you between now and when we get home from Scotland! 🙂 Thank you Kathy! Hi to George!

  3. Jackie Mc. says:

Oh, how I was a weepy little thing all through the episode, and then when Tom arrived, I gasped and really went on a crying jag! Happy Day, indeed! I am so glad that he and Sibby are back!

  4. Debbie from White Bear Lake says:

Oh my! I didn’t realize until the episode was over that I had been grinning from ear to ear!

    • sbranch says:

Isn’t that the way! Or crying through the whole thing, that was me this time, when I wasn’t laughing!

  5. marty from New York City says:

    Dearest Susan:

It is cold and windy with just a few flurries in the city. The light snowfall last night covered the tops of the water tanks outside my office window –festive little triangular hats in the bright sunshine.

I think that you can either look like “the Cat that swallowed the Canary” or “sit in the cat-bird’s seat”. So long as you are happy, its OK.
There is no point in my gushing over last nights Downton Abbey Episode-it can never be anything but exquisite. We have to give credit to Barrow for his kindness to the aging owner sitting in the ruins of the past in gently refusing the position. I hope that he finds himself and a partner who will bring out the best in him- which we have certainly seen on occasion.
Must get on with the day-how peaceful all looks in smallville. Enjoy! Marty.

    • sbranch says:

Mixing metaphors is my lot in life. I always know I’m doing it, but never take time to untangle them! Barrow is so handsome!

  6. Mary Brehm says:

I just knew your post would be wonderful today! The whole time we were watching last night, my daughter and I kept saying, “I can’t wait to see what Susan will say about it tomorrow!” You did not disappoint. You put into words exactly what I was thinking and feeling as I watched last night. I was laughing, crying, sighing through the whole show. I don’t know about you, but as hard I try to like Lady Mary, I find myself disliking her more and more (and I really do want her to be with Tom, even though she doesn’t deserve him)! Cora redeemed herself quite well. I kind of have a soft spot for Mr. Barrow, I wish he would find some happiness along with Mr. Mosley. Mrs. Patmore makes me laugh out loud! Lady Edith is absolutely radiant and I am so proud of her! I really really really will be so sad when it ends…I am so excited for you and your book tour! What an exciting thing to look forward to. I wish you were coming through my neck of the woods. It looks like I may have to get my hubby to take me on a little road trip this spring ; ) Stay warm and enjoy the magical snow.

    • sbranch says:

I wouldn’t want Lady Mary for my “best friend” — that’s for sure, but I like her in this show. She’s cute, wears the clothes well, and gives me lots of opportunities to go tsk tsk. I want her to be happy! Edith is gorgeous! And yes, road trip! I forget where you are Mary . . .?

    • Candy Charters says:

I also agree that Susan’s comments were just about what I thought they’d be! SUPERB episode! At the end, I was jumping up and down and clapping my hands. My precious husband, who also watches DA with me, looked a me and said – lovingly! – “You are pathetic!” But he total gets it; he gave me the boxed set of Series 1-5 for Christmas, along with the CD set “Christmas at Downton Abbey.”

Tom’s return was just….wonderful! Although Allan Leech’s name has not been in the opening credits for the first 3 episodes, I would guess we’ll see it from now on. And we all should have known he’d show up sometime this series…he did, after all, do the US press tour with Michelle Dockery and Hugh Bonneville, and they did that hysterical bit on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, where they did actual DA dialog with American accents. Tom/Allan had the best line, right at the end of the piece – “Mary, who are you wearing??” Look it up on YouTube!

      • sbranch says:

I saw it! Was so funny, especially Allan who was pure Valley Girl! That’s what they think we sound like! Too funny!

  7. KarenP. (Wisconsin) says:

Could last night on DA have been more perfect?! I think not! So much happiness packed into one episode. That wedding was perfection….Mrs. Hughes looked radiant. I don’t think there was a dry eye across America last night! I about jumped out of my seat when Tom popped in with Sibby! And Mary lit up like the 4th of July! I think you may be right about them! I do worry about Robert, though…..Julian is preparing us for something, I think. I think Thomas may find a father/son relationship with this Sir who lost his sons. He seemed quite drawn to him and they both seem like such lonely souls. So excited for Edith and Anna! Both glowing! I am watching for the second time and tickled to know that you are painting “our” wonderful book as you watch/listen again. I can’take help but think it gives an extra measure of magic to each brush stroke! Happy Day After Downton Day! ♡

  8. Pam says:

I love your Downton Abbey posts!!I don’t know which I will miss more-the show or your beautiful recaps of each episode!!

  9. carmel says:

This is so much fun! The wedding and reception was so beautiful and I never saw anyone so much as break a sweat to put all of that together. Everything was so elegant and touching. Sweet. I thought Mary’s been showing so much of her good side. She did try to tell Cora – it all worked out beautifully. Next wedding will be Edith’s I’m sure. What a keeper he is! Just like your Joe (I mean that). Love Violet and Isobel’s zingers. Livens up things. The show is moving everyone’s story on a rapid pace – must be because they’re wrapping up. I was watching Downton, Mercy House and the Democratic debate at the same time. I have to admit Downton and Mercy House got more air time in this home (I am serious about issues, and will catch up with the debate today). We’re excited about Mercy House in our area because the story line takes place in Alexandria, VA, a charming and historic town nearby. It was all filmed in another town in VA where much of the movie “Lincoln” was filmed. Much of the town and it’s buildings are “as is” so film makers don’t have to do much but shoot. I know it’s not like Downton, but nevertheless, interesting to some of us. All the very best with your tour schedule. You and Joe deserve all the good your new book tour can bring. Thinking about Martin Luther King, Jr. today and all his efforts for peace.

  10. KarenP. (Wisconsin) says:

Did you happen to watch Mercy Street following Downton? I think it’said going to be very good. Great characters.

  11. Eileen says:

    Forget Robert’s cough.
What about the “indigestion” he’s had since last season ?
    I’m just sayin’… I’m already preparing myself… 🙁

    • sbranch says:

I’m not! He’s just allergic to all the new baby paraphernalia in the house! That’s all it is. Just keep away from the Baby Powder and he’ll be fine.

      • Shannon (Pennsylvania) says:

Ahhh, Eileen, Robert’s ongoing “indigestion” worries me, too! Susan, I’ll try to adopt your optimistic view that it’s baby powder alegeries, but I wonder if his condition will play into the ongoing battle between Violet and Isobell over modernizing the hospital! Loved this episode, I believe it just may be one of my favorites.

        • sbranch says:

We’ve had a couple of suggestions that he might have a heart attack and be saved by the newer more modern equipment!

  12. Grand Pam says:

I have already e-mailed Parnassus Books and shall do again. My Joe watches Dowton with me just as I do football with him. One eye is reading something else. We always look forward to your reviews. Hope to meet and greet you in Nashville.

  13. Ann Waddell says:

I, too, am a Downton-aphile! Maggie Smith as the Dowager Countess is my favorite character, and how I will miss her amazing pronouncements! (“What is a week end?”) Last night, I particularly loved when Sibby hugged Marigold-so precious. Children are wise, and know about love. I could go on and on, but mainly I hope that Edith finds happiness, and that Anna and Bates have some good luck. We’ll have to tune in for all of the Downton news!
    Be Well, Ann

  14. Cindy Maulin says:

hi Susan….. You covered it beautifully…. loved this episode from start to finish and will miss it all terribly….I have already re-watched it, memorizing as much as possible…sniff… My husband… who has watched this with me from the start, still has a bit of trouble following along sometimes, so I enjoyed your take on Lord Merton and Dr. Clarkson …last night, when Lady Edith agreed to having a drink with Bertie, he said, ” well… she can’t drink, she’s pregnant!”….. “No” I said “not her…” ” well…. Who’s pregnant then?”…. bless his heart!!! Even though he gets thrown off sometimes…( another explanation came upon the return of Tom…), he loves it and will miss it too. I just had to laugh…. I find it intriguing that much of the storyline has been devoted to change…. things ending… new things beginning…especially that scene with Mr. Carson packing and running his hand over the comforter on his bed…a gesture of goodbye and love… just made me cry….so.. there we are, laughing and crying all at the same time….. which is part of the reason we all love it so… it touches our hearts and souls. I think a complete boxed set of Downton Abbey is in my future! Have a perfectly lovely day enjoying the beauty of a fresh snow while creating from your ” rabbit hole”….. and thank you for this wonderful recap of DA… I loved it and am looking forward to what everybody else thinks…. Stay warm and cozy…. love, cindy

    • sbranch says:

Lately they have these fundraisers on PBS where if you donate $ to them, they send you the complete set of Downton, that way you kill two birds with one stone! Love your husband’s questions!

  15. Barbara Critchlow says:

    Dear Susan,
I love you and the blogs and the reflections on Downton Abbey! Mrs. Hughes wanted the “down home” party with everyone contributing stories, songs, playing guitars, banjos, dulcimers, accordians, fiddles, drums. They’re Caleighs in Scotland, and I presume Hoolies in Yorkshire. Please be sure and alert your girl friends in England and Scotland to take you to some of these on your next trip to Britain. Everyone sings and plays music and dances the night away. Thank you for the joy you give to us!

  16. Nancy Fenemore says:

Oh how sweet was the wedding dress outfit, once it was all ironed out? Things are certainly looking up for Lady Edith…………hopefully she will find some happiness. I love, love, love Violet…………will miss her the most! Have you seen the movie “My Old Lady” with Maggie Smith………..where she remains a permanent resident in a Parisian apartment that has been willed to an American…so good……….and then our PRECIOUS Tom returns………….so happy to see him back at last………….Mary & Tom??…….Tom & Mary??……we shall see.

  17. That is so funny, I get those two men confused, too! Loved the wedding and the reception and Tom & Sibby!

  18. Betsy in Pennsylvania says:

When Tom entered the reception hall (school) I was so surprised and of course my eyes filled! I love his character. He is so warm and sensible. If anyone can settle Mary’s dark side it’s him. xoxoxo

  19. Sandra says:

Don’t be sad that this is the last series of Downton! You will have the marvellous Christmas special to look forward to (you will love it!) and then you can buy the DVDs to start all over again!

    • sbranch says:

I’ve already got them in my hot little hand!

      • Care Kester says:

Oh, Susan! Are you telling us that you HAVE the DVD set for Season 6 but you are watching it real time? Oh, if that is true then you are as strong and self controlled as Joan of Arc! Ha! I did it. I got the set and I can’t stop watching it. It is marvelous and I’m even dreaming about it at night. Yes, I just loved the wedding……glorious!
I’m already planning my trip to Brewster in July for the Beatrix Potter birthday party! I LOVE the anticipation…..

        • sbranch says:

Yes, I am. I have it right here. But I love the slow unfolding! Well, but not quite Joan of Arc! LOL! Nice dreams you must be having! Oh good! You’re coming to Brewster, I can’t wait for that one. A chance to talk about Beatrix. My cup of tea!

          • Care Kester says:

Yes, talking about Beatrix is one of my FAVORITE cups of tea too! I so adore her! Planning my Peter Rabbit Garden right now for this Spring/Summer project. Yippee!

          • sbranch says:

What a fun idea. As long as your local bunnies don’t get the wrong idea!

      • Deb W says:

Them…… does that mean they have not included the ‘Christmas Special’ in the DVD of season six for us in America? I was trying to figure it out on Amazon – whether it was all-inclusive or not, but not having much success.

        • sbranch says:

No it’s there, I’m sure. Because the show plays in England and ends at Christmas, they always call the last show the Christmas Special, but for us, it’s just the last show. Either way, I’m sure we’ll get it on the DVD.

  20. Barbara Weaver says:

Coming clean here. I watch the 8:00 Downton rerun on Sunday night which puts me a week behind in the episodes. I find it very hard to stay up past 9:00! Just a sleepy head, I guess. BUT I enjoy seeing your Monday posts because they give me a good preview of what’s next! Keeps me on my toes until next Sunday. Looking forward to that wedding! We knew Tom would be back…the plot thickens. I always enjoy your blogs!

  21. Theresa says:

Hello Susan! I love reading your Downton posts. Wasn’t the wedding wonderful? Mrs. Hughes wanted a little “hooley”…an Irish party usually with music (I looked it up). No wonder Carson looked a little askance at her suggestion!
    Happy watching!
    Theresa

  22. Marla says:

I loved the show last night and finally seeing Edith come alive was one of the best moments of the night for me. Another moment was when Mrs. Patmore ordered the dress, such a sweet gesture, and how they all rallied around making the dress look better than it was. I’ll miss all these characters at the end of this season. Like you, I enjoy all the details of the set. They have amazing set designers. Any chance you might sell bunting banners in your shop, Susan? 🙂

    • sbranch says:

I went and had some made from a person on Etsy for myself, and asked if she would make them for YOU, but she never got back to me and I’m afraid that they would have cost too much. But go look, and see if you can find her, maybe she’s still doing it. I’m sorry, it’s been since Mary’s wedding since I ordered mine 🙂 so I don’t remember her name. Just look for white cotton bunting.

  23. KarenP. (Wisconsin) says:

I get confused between Lord Merton and Dr. Clarkson, too! Ha! Two perfect options for Isabel….lucky lady!

  24. Sally says:

Hi, Susan – I’m new to the “girlfriends” but am a kindred spirit, and I’m so enjoying your blogs, Willards, and BOOKS! I, too, am a Downton FANatic and thought about you last night as it came on, feeling happy that you were taking a break from the hard work you’re putting in for the book (for us! Thank you!!!) and watching that beautiful TV program! It’s fun to be a part of a group of fans! My best friend is having a Downton party before the last show. We did one a few years ago (start of season 3, I think), and it was so fun – costumes, special menus, “titles” (we were Duchesses), and TEA, of course. Personally, I’m hoping for Charles Blake for Mary – they seem well-suited, because he can handle her as an equal. And I REALLY hope no one dies this season! Can’t we have a happy ending?? My husband threatened to quit watching after season 3’s losses – but you know that didn’t happen. (Smile!) Anyway, THANK YOU for being you and for sharing your life and being such a source of joy and happiness – you’re like a Downton Abbey yourself! So excited about your next book (my order was placed some time ago) , and I can not WAIT for the Scotland trip! (I’ve read Fine Romance 4 times over the last three years.) Will be watching your book tour and hope to find you nearby. Right now, Cincy’s the closest. God bless you, Downton Sister!

    • sbranch says:

Thank you for calling me a Downton Abbey. What a compliment! 🙂 So nice to meet you, Downton Sista friend of mine.

  25. Julie V from Springfield, MO says:

Another wonderful Downton Abbey- love everything about it! I am wondering what Masterpieces is going to do to fill the void that is left once it is completed. I am confident that our British friends will come up with something delightful for us. Are any of you starting to feel sorry for Barrow? I never thought I would but I am. Tom is back – I knew something was going to happen when Lady Mary mentioned her letter from Tom. BTW – Lady Mary is getting quite bossy with everyone. So pleased that Edith got some approval and hope that Bertie is the one for her. Someday when I have grandchildren I think I would like for them to call me Granny – with a British accent of course!
    Have a wonderful day!:)

    • sbranch says:

I used to think Barrow was the personification of evil, but he is being rehabilitated, and I’m very happy to see it. He is SO handsome, I like to see him happy! Better get your children to move to England now in order to prepare for children to give correct pronunciation of your name! Also you can visit them!

  26. Julie Marie says:

You are coming to Salt Lake City Utah!!! I am sooo excited!!! I will finally get to meet you, I live about 30 miles north of there and I can NOT wait!!!… xoxo… Julie Marie Do you think I am just a tad excited Susan???…

  27. Last night Downton Abbey was perfection! Some of the interior and exterior shots were set up exquisitely. Robert in those arches! Edith and Bertie on the street in London, Thomas against the white of the other house. the “groaning tables” in the school house… I could go on. The episode deserved a special award for cinematography and set design.

After it is all over and we are going through withdrawals, something to help hold on is a book “Lady Almina and the Real Downton Abbey” (by the REAL Lady of Downton) . We will have to have something to do between the end of Downton and the arrival of “Martha’s Vineyard Isle of Dreams”! Anyway, this book tells the story of that beautiful green silk fabric on the walls of the drawing room. I will just say that only a Rothschild probably could afford such gorgeousness!

I really don’t want Downton to end but I’m thinking Julian Fellowes may have some other treats in store for us! I hope so!

I loved your little picture of the snow. My son who is my Downton watching partner heads back to school in Boston this week so we can see what he has to look forward to after leaving Texas! Brrrr!!

  28. Cindy from West Chester Pa says:

You probably heard my gasp, all the way up there on your snowy island, when Tom walked through the door. I truly think he is what Mary needs and hope it goes that way. Aw, a girl can dream can’t she. I thought of you also and hoped you would post today. And you did! I will miss this show terribly when it ends. I may have to dress in black for awhile to properly mourn its passing. By the way I loved how Mrs. Patmore went quietly around, like a wedding secret agent, and straightened things out for Mrs. Hughes. Love her.
    Have a wonderful day!

  29. Ardi Butler says:

Up until this episode I have loved Granny. Her comments, though smug, has always been witty. Now she’s downright bitter and nasty. But seeing Branson and Sibby was so wonderful and quite made a balance for the back-biting aspects of this hospital issue. Loved every moment of the wedding. And little Daisy – poor dear, doesn’t know when to keep quiet. I think Branson will move into the Drew’s estate house, not Mr. Mason

    • sbranch says:

Tom has Sibby and Sibby is a Crawley, (too), so I think he will have to stay in the house… plus he needs to run it, but we shall see!

  30. Sarah in Tucson says:

Susan, I wanted to tell you how much I love your books, calendars, blog & everything you create. You truly make this world a more beautiful place. I’ve been collecting your books since I was a teenager & my Mom & I love to talk about them & what recipes we will try next. My Mom was able to go to one of your book signings but I haven’t been able to yet so when I saw that Prescott was on your list, I was so excited!!! Thank you again for everything you do & sharing your creativity with the world 🙂

  31. Gill Smith says:

Hi Susan, so glad you are all enjoying Downton over the pond. Yes it’s been so huge over here in the UK too. The Christmas special was wonderful…..I won’t spoil anything for you! We are all thinking what on earth are we going to do on a Sunday evening now?????
Weather here in North Devon is cold, although we have yet to have snow, in this part of the world.
Wouldn’t it be lovely if you could visit Highclere, where Downton was filmed, next time you are over here?
I visited last summer, and wasn’t disappointed!

    • sbranch says:

We will try! We did once before but they were closed for filming . . . that won’t happen next time, I’m sorry to say! FREEEEEEEZING here today. My poor feet are so cold, I’m going to start my revolving slippers, one pair in front of the furnace warming to exchange with the freezing ones on my feet. Be sure to tell me what we can look forward to on Sundays now . . . I’m sure you will know first! I’m coming to Stourhead, in Wiltshire, to meet my European Girlfriends for a BYO Picnic Basket Party next fall. I’ll post the details when we get closer, but keep me in mind in case you’re in a traveling mood. Have a wonderful day!

  32. Pom Pom says:

I loved Tom and Sibby at the end! I worry about Daisy. Granny’s staff worries me, too. I like the way Robert remains calm but I don’t want him to have a heart attack. The kitchen is my favorite room! I ordered my book! Happy writing, Susan!

    • sbranch says:

Granny’s staff! Good lord, what a pair. I got afraid when I saw her move in close to him this time. I thought, oh no, not these two!

      • Deb W says:

I could have done without the Spratt / Denker story line. Their characters are relatively new, and with so many characters we have loved from the beginning, I want all the time to go to wrapping up those story lines – happy endings, please!

        • sbranch says:

Well, I guess it’s good filler, and they do stir things up a bit at Violet’s house. But Denker is just plain trouble.

  33. Becky says:

I clapped during the ending! I was so thrilled to see Matthew and Sibby come into the school house! I immediately texted my niece about THIS episode! She was about to watch her recorded version. So glad I had not “spoiled” it for her! And, yes, I hope Edith will be able to say “my daughter” soon! When it finally dawned on me that Elsie and Charles are in my age range, they suddenly seemed so young!

  34. Lynn Marie says:

I am with Eileen on “what is wrong with Robert?”. That cough and the indigestion! And remember he had that heart attack scare either last season or the one before?!!! I am going to treat myself to the boxed Downton set sometime this year and then next January when I am crying the blues because it is all over, I can pretend it is not and start all over from the very beginning.

  35. moniek says:

Thanx for your lovely blogpost, here in the Netherlands we already have seen it all including the final. I miss is so much that I ordered the DVD box. It was a great series ! Enjoy your next episodes in the US !! Let us all hope there will be a film one day.

  36. Grace says:

Season 6 gets better with each new episode. Lovely to have the Bransons return. Hopefully Tom and Sibby will have Marigold smiling and talking before the series end. Mrs. Patmore has been terrific as Mrs. Hughes’ unofficial wedding planner and all around staff therapist. Spratt and Denker’s scenes provide great comic relief. The clothes continue to be fabulous. When will the fashion industry come up with an affordable line inspired by Downton Abby?

Looking forward to heading south to the Cape this Spring for th release of the Fine Romance Trilogy – Book 3. Happy MLK Day – “Let Freedom Ring”!

  37. Isabel says:

It is ironic that I did not watch Downton in the beginning. Then when I started to watch, it felt like there was so much I did not know and so much to catch up on, so I stopped watching. Wouldn’t you know that when I decided to give it another try, it is their last season. I have watched from the beginning of this new season and I LOVE IT. It did not take long at all to get attached to the characters. I just LOVE England and everything about that era. There are a few other English shows (I hope they are coming back). Home Fires, (I noticed a character in Downton is also in Home Fires) and the one with the midwives. It’s funny how we get attached to these characters and can’t wait to see what happens in their lives and stories. Part of the reason, I think, is that they are portrayed so well, they become real to us. To me, anyway. Unfortunately, I am stuck down in Florida and don’t think I will be able to get to one of your tours, though I wish I could. Maybe another time. I can always hope. Can’t wait for your new book.

  38. Diane Newton says:

I am so in love with Downton! And I’m so sad it’s ending!! I love that you talk about it after the show! And now look forward to read your “review”.
I am so excited to see you in Cincinnati at your book signing! Or I may have to go to St. Charles, where I had a quilt made for my daughter when she was 2 yrs old. Nostalgia!!
I’ve read “A Fine Romance” and now reading “The Fairy Tale Girl” (which my daughter gave me for Christmas, along with the “Sticky Notes”, and my annual “Susan Branch calendar”!) and I only read a few pages at a time because I don’t want it to end! Can’t wait for “Isle of Dreams” which I’ve requested for Mother’s Day from my very sweet and much obliging daughter.
    Have a wonderful day!!

  39. mari1017 says:

Oh, Susan… what a post ♥♥♥ I have very little free time these days. My mom has a difficult time in the colder weather between the darkness and the dementia and my sister moving out of NY to Vermont (new beginning, gorgeous new house, land!!! YEAH ♥♥♥), so I have my hands full for now. I’m two episodes behind! If it wasn’t for you and my cousin, I wouldn’t know what was happening! Thank you for you wonderful post and taking the time to write and publish them. LOVE LOVE LOVE the music!!!! I could leave this on all day 🙂 Despite all things cold and a snowstorm predicted for end of the week, my heart is truly full with life and service to my lovely mom and home. Thank you a million times! I just wish I was close enough to get to actually meet you on your tour! lol Still have those First Editions of all your books from Boston and living there. I do miss the freedom I used to have to go where and when I wanted. But I wouldn’t trade this time with my mom and her care for all the world! And she smiles at your calendar every day – she loves your work too! XOXO Have a blessed week!

  40. Jeanie says:

What about Wichita, Kansas? Our wonderful treasure, Watermark Books! We get wonderful authors like Jan Karon and Lydia Bastianich and Anne LaMott and Elizabeth Gilbert to name just a few. Please come!!!

    • sbranch says:

We went there on our last signing trip. It was great, but we thought we should spread ourselves around this time.

  41. Jeanie says:

To Downton…I don’t like the idea of Tom and Mary. I love Tom and Mary is not my favorite character. She is so unkind and I don’t like her as a mother for Sibby. I love the storyline with Edith, who is one of my favorites. It is so fun to see her transformation to a cosmopolitan business woman. I have always loved Cora and I love Baxter’s compassion towards Thomas. I don’t like the storyline with Andrew and Carson’s cruel behavior towards Thomas…it just seems mean.

  42. Trisha says:

Good morning Susan, Love your comments about last night’s Downton episode…….was thinking of you as Tom walked in the door……knew that you would like that new twist! What is your feeling about Isabel…..wonder if she will end up with either the Lord or the Doctor? Edith and Bertie need to run the magazine together in London…..my favorite of all of them is Violet and will miss her the most! Maggie Smith is one of those people that you would like to have over for dinner or perhaps high tea!!It will definitely be hard to end this perfect series……going to miss all the wonderful and interesting characters……the fantastic acting and the beautiful sets! Enjoy your busy day as you work on your book…..am about to go outside and sweep away the fluffy snow from the walkway and driveway in the cold sunshine and maybe spot a cardinal or two!! Take care……and can’t wait til Plainville! P.S. I have “Lady Almina and the Real Downton Abbey” if you would like me to send it along…….I could drop it in the mail to you…..

  43. deborah t. norling says:

I was happy to see Tom and Sibby show up at the wedding reception..however, I felt it took the wind out of the sails of Mr. and Mrs. Carson’s special moment..(then again, the Downstairs Folk would be used to fading into the background when the Upstairs Folk make an entrance ) and while I agree Tom and Mary together makes sense in the long run…Tom is so gentle and kind and Mary…so snippy and spoiled….I do like certain aspects of her character…but..I can’t really say..I like her !

  44. Barb from Ohio says:

I loved Downton last night and everything in it! Finally Mr Carson and Mrs Hughes are married, so they’ll have to get used to calling her Mrs Carson. Where are the two of them going to move into, I didn’t catch it in the show if they said? Great reception at the school house and it seemed perfect. Glad Mrs Hughes, er Mrs Carson stuck to her guns and held out for it and not having it in the house even as beautiful as that would be.
When Tom and Sibby walked in, my daughter and I both squealed out at the same time, and it seems they are staying for good. I’d hoped they’d bring him back, but didn’t think it would be this soon this season. Yep, Julian Fellows definitely has something planned here! Glad to see Edith has a good guy interested in her, she had better grab him fast.
I can’t help feeling sorry a bit for Thomas, even though I never liked him because of his past nastiness and bullying of his fellow workers. He just wants to be happy like everyone else. I wonder if he’ll end up going back to that house he inquired about last night. Daisy seems to have high hopes for Mr Mason and the Drewes vacated house, but I’m afraid it might be premature, given Cora’s reaction to Daisy’s enthusiasm. I need to watch it over to see what I might have missed, but loving it so far.

  45. Mary Jane Gruber says:

Good morning, Susan. So glad to read your blog this morning. I thought Mrs. Hughes said she wanted some “honey”. Now it makes sense. She wanted some “hooey”. We’re heading to Monterey, CA this spring so I’ll sure be checking your book tour and trying to get near one of the stores. (I think I can get Jim to detour within a 100 miles or so.) I found another quote for you. This one is by the late French writer and filmmaker, Jean Cocteau. He said, “I love cats because I enjoy my home; and little by little, they become its visible soul.” Hoping you have a good week.

  46. Elizabeth says:

Oh my goodness! So much open-endedness with the potential for so much happiness! I hope to be invited to a wedding breakfast some day that looks just like that one! The food must have been divine. Edith, Mr. Barrow, Moseley and Baxter really do deserve an extra measure of happiness. But what will happen with Mr. Mason? Daisy is getting ahead of herself. I hope it turns out all right. Then there is Denkers and Sprat. How will she blackmail him in return for keeping his secret? The exterior shot of Sir Michael’s home reminded me of Castle Howard in Yorkshire.
On another subject. I am thrilled you are coming to The King’s English in Salt Lake!! I live within walking distance so I’ll be there clutching my copy of your book! (I’ve preordered)
Thank you for getting my day off to a fabulous start!

  47. Asha says:

Susan Branch AND Downton Abbey! What more could we ask for?! LOVE your “replay” of the episodes, Susan. I thought it was interesting to see Mary and Edith’s reaction to Tom’s return. They both were over the top, especially Mary. The wedding was beyond perfection! Extremely well done! I am so excited to have your book tour to look forward to after DA ends. See you in CT! Love you 🙂

  48. Jacqueline (Minnesota) says:

    Dear Susan,
A quick look at the atlas tells me that I’m 5 1/2 hours from your Cedar Rapids visit. If there’s a fishin’ hole nearby I’m sure I can talk dear hubby into a road trip! I’ve got 4 months to help him realize what a wonderful idea this is! Or better yet, Mr. K can stay at home and fish and my dear sister and I will take the road trip. Thanks for a lovely peek into your day. My Minnesota is currently at -10 with a windchill of -25. A good day for staying tucked inside.

    Be blessed!

  49. Rosanne Murphy says:

I love this season of DA! Last night was so heartwarming, and the clothes! Did you notice (of course you did) the delicious gown Cora had on when she offered her coat to Mrs. Hughes? And I love Mary’s sort of flapper look. Tom for her, yes, but then there is that ever-so-handsome guy we saw last season who is in the previews! Robert better not get sick! I’m just saying.

  50. Ann Woleben says:

Thinking positive thoughts for Lady Mary and Tom – so glad he came to his senses! Who would want to leave Downton Abbey? What are we going to do when Downton Abbey has ended? Read your new book, of course! Stay warm – drink tea – keep painting.

  51. Lori C. says:

Susan – thank you – thank you for posting what happened on Downton last night – as I and my friend missed it! And I know her husband wouldn’t do it justice trying to explain it to us. Will have to wait to get it on DVD!

  52. Annie in IL says:

I will be seeing you on May 10 in Wilmette, IL for tea and ‘nibbly bits’ and signing of books and whatever else delightful thing comes up!!!
Since what Mrs. Hughes wanted was a hoolie/hooley which is Irish, wondered if this is where ‘hooligan’ was derived from?? Per my DNA, I am 31% Irish and I think there were some ‘hooligans’ in the family!!!
The once-wonderful, nearly empty home of Sir Michael (?) broke my heart, and the situation obviously moved Barrow – especially the loss of the two sons.
I, too, keep trying to forget that this is the last season; can hardly bear it!

  53. matty says:

omgomgomg… I started bawling halfway through and screamed when Tom walked in… I can cry right now just thinking of it! YES! Tom can manage that brattish Mary! YES! Mr. and Mrs. Carson were just wonderful! YES! Baby!!!! NOOOO… Lord Grantham can’t have anything wrong with him! “Heartburn??” Get thee to the hospital which will have a specialist and save his life and Granny will have to admit she was sooooo wrong!!!! And Edith will marry Bertie… and everyone will be happy and grow old sitting on the porch watching the grass grow!! I love them so much, how will I live when they have gone on to their world and left me in mine without big houses and perfect lampshades and hats and gloves?? Sigh….. I want to see how it all ends… and dread it, too…. <3 M

  54. I refuse to believe it’s really going to end and keep ducking under my blanket of denial. I don’t know what I will do without this show! I’m going to mourn and wear black for days. Okay, maybe that’s a bit dramatic, but I’ll feel like I’m in black!

I’ve been gobbling up every line and scene too. All so deliciously good!! I’m terrified that it won’t end (if it does – again denial) how I want it to end. I selfishly want perfection…is that so wrong? I keep waiting for the other shoe to drop and hold my breath!

Blessings on your tour ahead. Safe travels all the time through and LOTS of fun!! Reminds me I need to pre-order Isle of Dreams. Can’t wait! I think that just may balm my Downton grieving soul. xoxo

  55. Becky says:

Good morning Susan and girlfriends. Yes, yes, and yes again to everything that has been previously stated. This was truly one of my favorite episodes for all of your mentioned reasons. The beauty and the civility of that time period is not lost on us! I will reiterate that I do wish Mr. Carson would be kinder to Thomas. Thomas’s shenanigan’s were “so last year” and he deserves a chance to redeem himself. Hmmmm, might make for a great story line. And the wedding breakfast reception was understated elegance; grandly beyond and above any event in the great hall. We are lucky people to be witnessing this story unfold before us. Parts of it are rather like a prayer, a connecting with goodness and kindheartedness that is sometimes missing in real life. I’m happy to be along for the ride!

  57. Jane S says:

I think of you a thousand times when I watched this last night! Robert’s cough, I think he claimed to be indigestion. I thought there’s going to be more to this! 🙁 And the way that old man describes the way the women climbed the stairs at evening’s end! It’s just the little things that make this show so great. Also, I love Mary and Anna’s friendship. When Tom and Sibby came in at the end I thought, “Susan must be crying with joy!” Thanks so much for the recaps of this show!!!

    • sbranch says:

You’re so welcome! Yes, I love Mary and Anna’s friendship too. Loyal and trusting. I like to see Mrs. Patmore and Mrs. Hughes-Carson together too.

  58. Debby says:

Sorry if someone already said this, no time to read comments right now, but never fear Susan, my prediction is that Lord Grantham becomes ill and the new hospital saves his life and the Dowager comes round to accepting it. And you are right,Tom came back for Mary. Even tho she doesn’t deserve him. Also Isobelle likes the Dr. and we know that he likes her. In the last comments someone said that Mrs. Patmore and Daisy’s father in law should get together, perfect. Now Alfred needs to save Daisy!! And well done Mrs.Huges/Mrs.Carson, standing up for what she wanted. Cried through the whole thing. Love, love, love. p.s. Mr Carson needs to lighten up on Thomas!

  59. Virginia says:

Another riveting episode and Mrs Hughes looked so lovely. That coat *made* the plain dress. And Cora gave it to her to keep forever…good for you, Cora. And who could ever have thought she was a snob–I never saw a sign of it–she was just having a bit of a meltdown after a VERY stressful afternoon. Haven’t we all? And Cora was the one sensitive enough to realize that Downton may not have been the bride’s choice which she mentioned several times.

I must say I don’t see Tom and Mary together–great friends and co-workers but not in love. And I confess I have been a teeny bit disappointed by Julian’s writing for Tom. From a freedom fighter in the Irish War for Independence to an auxiliary member of the British aristocracy? I haven’t been able to buy it tho I put my reservations on hold to enjoy the story line.

And I too have had a terrible time telling the difference between Mrs Crawley’s two suitors. The doctor has a mustache…both handsome and kind, decent men. She can’t go wrong if she ever decides to marry again.

Thank you Susan for letting us all vent our theories and share the fun. Not thinking about The End–just enjoying the moment.

    • sbranch says:

I think Tom fell in love with the family. Love conquers all. But he keeps his integrity and doesn’t kowtow — he doesn’t pretend to be anything but what he is, a good proud guy. But of course, not real. The only big drawback.

  60. Chris Wells From Knickerbocker, W. TX says:

Wasn’t Downton just the best last night!? I was already crying watching Mrs Hughes and Mr Carson get married and then in walks Tom!! I was so sure he was gone! Perhaps to launch Julian Fellows new venture. But now he is back. Mary has been such a pill lately and so full of herself, she really doesn’t deserve Tom. And Edith got to smile in this episode! I will watch it again tonight on my IPad with my headphones, I will hear it better that way. Sometimes I tend to miss the dialogue when I watch it on TV the first time. I don’t know what we are going to do when it’s over. Oh well for the time being I will take Kathy George’s advice and be in denial!!

    • sbranch says:

Yes, denial is the place to be!

      • Chris Wells From Knickerbocker, W. TX says:

Just re watched it last night and laughed out loud when I heard Mrs Hughes say “nibbly bits”! I missed that first time around! LOL

    • Deborah in Odessa, Tx says:

Hi Chris….I wanted to thank you for your offer in last post. I read it last night. I did answer. I have a daughter in Bastrop and a friend in Cameron…now that I know dates I am sure I will get to see Susan. I hope to see you there. We need to wear big ol’ name cards. See you then I hope.

      • Chris Wells From Knickerbocker, W. TX says:

So glad you have a layover spot! I will be there with name tag on!
        Will look for you!

  61. jackie bienemann says:

I couldn’t wait for my lunch hour today to read your post after Downton Abbey! So happy for Edith and hopeful she will find happiness and also noticed Mary’s scary look, loved the wedding and I really loved when Tom came into the schoolhouse. My first thought was Susan will be so happy and hope you are right about him and Mary. She needs him in her life to tone her down, she is getting a little bossy, but still love her. And so happy about a new baby, I hope that happens. I agree nothing bad should happen this season! I want a happy ending!!! Can’t wait to see you in Cedar Rapids again. It is about 2 hours away from me and so worth seeing you and Joe last time.
Thank you Susan for your wonderful posts!

  62. Beth says:

What a wonderful DA and your post recapped it purr-fectly. And isn’t Mary Agent of DA? If so being agent isn’t a bad job at all.

I missed that Bertie is English “Upper Class”…I need to refresh my memory on that one because I think/hope that he’s Edith’s perfect mate (altho didn’t we see Edith crying and pracitally pulling her hair out in her bedroom in the season previews? That doesn’t bode well…maybe she’s just venting about something awful Mary did which would be completely understandable).

I, too, will miss this show soooo much but am savoring every minute of the last season.

  63. Lisa says:

I think the saddest part of last nights episode is when Moseley says ” I fear I have missed everything”. But as he does, thinks about everyone else, he says ” but Daisy does not have to”.

    • sbranch says:

I was hoping for him and Baxter, and I don’t think it could be him and Daisy, but sometimes I wonder. I agree, that was SO sad.

      • Michelle says:

I think Molesley (That’s the spelling – I double-checked!) will wind up with Baxter. (I certainly HOPE so.) That said, I feel his keen interest in Daisy is strictly “academic.” As the schoolmaster listened intently to Mr. Molesley, I began to hope that he’ll land a position with the school. (Or at least a good recommendation based on his work with Daisy.)

As my Mom and I say every week, we look forward to your write up! xo

      • carmel says:

Oh, I’m hoping for him and Baxter too! Another happy ending would be wonderful. His remark made me very sad too. Well, we never know … it’s never too late NOT to miss everything.

    • I felt sad too that Moseley said that, but I love that he is watching out for headstrong Daisy and pushing her toward MORE than being a house servant since he understands what happens if a person doesnt live up to their potential. He is too sweet! 🙂

  64. Carol Maurer~~~~ Kennewick, Wa says:

Good morning Susan and all girlfriends everywhere~~~
Loved the wedding on Downton Abbey last night! Was surprised at the length of the table. My oh my! Was so surprised and happy that Tom is back! Of course, I think we were thinking that he would come back. I was telling my husband of all the things that we thought would happen and/or be on the show. So far so good. Loved the coat that Edith wore. Also, I liked the hat that she wore. Did you notice just how cute it was?

We are in thick fog this morning. It didn’t start out that way….. the sun was out, but not for long. I’m thinking that by this afternoon the sun will find its way back again. All the snow from your window is so pretty. Showed off the Red Cardinal very well. I opened up the curtains this morning to see a dove on the back fence. We aren’t feeding the birds this winter very often so was surprised to see it.

I’m thinking that you are heading down the tail end of writing your latest book. Looking forward to reading it. I so enjoyed “The Fairy Tale Girl”!

    Must be off now.
    xoxox,
    Carol M

  65. Carol Maurer~~~~ Kennewick, Wa says:

I was thinking of Mrs. Hughes when I wrote about Edith… Dah! The hat that Mrs. Hughes wore was really cute.

    Carol M

  66. Sara Hanson says:

Please come to Denver, I’d love to meet you in person!!! And Downton Abbey was simply superb last night! The wedding and reception were so well done. I hate that it’s all coming to an end! Anyone else feel like the seasons are always over too soon!

  67. Cathy Wegner says:

Whenever I hear that music, I get chills! I love that Tom came home and the wedding was so sweet. How are we going to get along without Downton!

  68. Gasp*Cough*LOL*Sob*Smile. Pretty sums up all the emotional outbursts while I was watching the show. The world is (once again) “spinning in greased grooves.” (as John Steinbeck said in Cannery Row) Aren’t we just so glad?!

  69. Barb Leib says:

Last night’s episode was my favorite (so far). I agree that Tom and Mary belong together – he would definitely soften her edges! And poor Edith deserves some happiness.

  70. Robin in New Jersey says:

Tom walks in and a big, huge, GASP went up in our family room among my three daughters and I. Now that was a well kept secret and such a nice surprise!! Oh, Susan, I am with you, Tom and Lady Mary must get married. I am so enjoying this season. Violet didn’t have too many zingers last night. And oh dear, I hope that wasn’t a foreshadowing of things to come when Robert coughed. I wonder what Mary will do when she finds out Edith has a child. Cora was so kind and sincere, I want to be like her!

After the show, I went to bed and picked up the book on my nightstand and read for over an hour. It just happens to be your book, Fairy Tale Girl! I am enjoying it so much. YOU are an amazing woman! Did you hand write all the words? Or do you have a font on your computer that you use?

Still no snow here in Jersey. Just a bit of a snow shower yesterday.

Thank you for bringing us into your lovely world out there on Martha’s Vineyard. It is now a dream of mine to go there someday and visit!

    • sbranch says:

All of my books so far, including A Fine Romance have been completely handwritten. But I did finally get a font made from the handwriting I used in that book, and used it for The Fairytale Girl . . . course there’s lots of my handwriting still there, all the quotes, some of the captions, for cuteness. I thought it might make the process faster so it didn’t take me two years to write a book, but I’m not sure it’s working out that way! Glad you’re enjoying the book!

  71. Manette Anderson says:

I too was so happy to see Tom! All will be right with the world now that he’s back. But not as happy as I am to know you’ll be in Denver. I’ll be driving 3 hours over two mountain passes (thank goodness you visit will be in May) to tell you in person what a wonderful influence you’ve been on me and through your recipes my family. Thank you in advance.

P.S. I fear we’re getting some foreshadowing of the plt line regarding Robert.

  72. Denise :) says:

With so much resolution in last night’s episode, I could almost not ever watch it again and feel satisfied that it all ended happily! *Almost* mind you — but last night was swell! 🙂

  73. sylvia in seattle says:

I’m glad to know I’m not the only one who gets Dr. Clarkson and Lord Merton confused. They could be twins. And do we know Carson and Mrs. Hughs first names??? If this were American TV they would have a spin-off show for sure. She looked stunning in that beautiful coat and hat. He looked pretty good as well. I must say Mercy Street was more than a bit of a culture shock! I’ll try to warm up to all that blood and gore for history’s sake 🙁 . I’m looking forward more to Maggie Smith’s new movie about the Lady in the Van 🙂 My gosh what did people DO before movies and TV . . . Of course I do remember life before TV, but I kind of forget too. Oh wait a minute, there was RADIO 🙂

    • sbranch says:

Yes, it’s Elsie and Charles. I’m not going for Mercy Street, just too much blood and sadness. Yikes. I can watch the news if I want that.

  74. Norine Molnar says:

He must marry Mary!!! He must! There is no other way. They are perfect. Plus, I saw some British magazine asking if they’d do the right thing and give the people – as in us – what they wanted…Tom and Mary. I took that as a sign! And, they said everyone was really happy with the ending, and I know some people here wouldn’t be, so I think that’s a sign, too!

    • sbranch says:

I so agree with you, he must marry Mary!!! I try to be calm when I’m writing the blog, but when I hear your words, I’m fortified!

  75. Harriett says:

I am not a Downton regular although I am a Susan Branch devotee and groupie. Loved this post! I will be “on demanding” this episode tonight snuggled on the couch under my throw; wish I could be in Mrs. Hughes wedding outfit at the same time. Loved the coat. We live in NY but were on the Cape this weekend in Falmouth, too bad we didn’t scoot over on the ferry to thank you in person! Ha, ha. Keep up your wonderful pictures and posts, chick-a-dee.

  76. deborah t. norling says:

Is anyone watching..”The Paradise” ? it airs Sunday just prior to Downton….it’s a re run but I missed it first go round….it’s very good..! and has several of the usual “gene-pool” of British actors…..several were in “Larkrise to Candleford” ( where I originally saw the actor who portrays..Mr. Bates on Downton ) .

  77. I was sobbing with happiness right along with you, Susan! The writer seems to be trying to make up for all the heartache we’ve had in past seasons, and I’m SO glad! One of my favorite episodes – I was so happy to see Tom and Sibby, too, and I hope your theory about them getting together with Lady Mary and George is right – wouldn’t that be a fairy-tale ending for all of us?

    • sbranch says:

I love a person who does his best. I think we all warm to that, and Julian Fellowes does his best!!! His last season will likely be his best! The man understands the concept of the fairy tale, of romance, and of beauty.

  78. Care Kester says:

I just read everyone’s comments and I find it very amusing and comforting that I am not the only one totally consumed by this beautiful and alluring show! Some of the Girls are having a Downton Party and that sounds just glorious! I wish I knew someone to have a Downton Party with….and I hope you all have the Downton Abbey game and play it…….oh gosh, teacups and nibbly bits!

  79. Glenda says:

I do so hope you can make it to Dallas sometime. I stopped by your old San Luis Obispo shop years ago, but you were on a cruise. You were the only reason we stopped there, but it turned out to be a really nice part of our trip anyway!

  80. Kathie says:

Tom came back quicker than ever we thought he would! How nice. And Mrs. Hughes…..er…..Carsten’s hat was oo-la-la. And all the rest, so nice. Barrow is getting good advice and it breaks my heart to see him ignoring it. Time will tell. I doubt we’ll get out of this without some sort of heart break, somewhere, beside the one that Downton is going away altogether! So glad for your snow. We would like some fresh snow….but also, the seed catalogs are making our hearts yearn for spring again. Your book trip is huge! A great way to see America, what?

  81. Miriam says:

Living in England I’ve obviously seen the whole series, and not wanting to give anything away, you are certainly in for a treat – lots of ups and downs before the final curtain!

I shall miss Downtown terribly, though at the moment we are enjoying seeing Lily James (Lady Rose) in the BBC adaptation of ‘War and Peace’ which is helping to fill the Downton gap – I hope you get to see it in the US.

  82. Loris Mills says:

Are you doing a book signing in San Luis Obispo? I don’t see it on the list and my sister and I are hoping, hoping, Hoping 🙂 I had to work when you were here last in Cayucos….couldn’t get anyone to trade with me 🙁
Or you could come right here to Cambria 😉 we would treat you to lunch and a walk with the dogs on the ranch.
    Happy painting 🙂

    • sbranch says:

We’re working on SLO right now, looks like something with Coalesce Bookstore in Morro Bay . . . but we’re still learning what kind of an event it will be. Love Cambria, but who doesn’t!

  83. Linda Miller says:

Susan, you do have a grand recap of Downton Abbey for us! Love your thoughts on the characters, clothing, estates, and decor. What shall we all do afterwards??

  84. Brenda Caldwell says:

Susan, I had to read the part about your plans for coming to NC twice, (really 3 times!) That would be wonderful! Stay warm and I know you are enjoying the snowy wonderland up there : )

  85. Jennifer says:

I love your play by play of Downton (and the wonderful shots from your tv). I look very forward to my Monday mornings now for your new posts and detailed comments. I wore a huge smile throughout the whole show last night. It’s pure happiness and I will miss it terribly.

  86. Fancynance says:

Ok, you HAVE to LOOK at your map and tell me what route you are planning to take from Austin, TX to ????? Arkansas. I live in the northeast corner of Texas. I am planning to come to Austin to Book People, because that is where my daughter lives. But it is a “fer piece” (that means a LONG WAY) from AUSTIN, TX to ARKANSAS. There are delightful, smallish sized towns along that route, if you are interested in finding a couple more book stores? WACO, TX (home of the Fixer Uppers from TV), TYLER,TX with their beautiful rose gardens, LONGVIEW, TX, where I live, and TEXARKANA, TX & AR (right on the state line of both states!) just to name a few! I have a feeling it will be a long time before you come back to TEXAS . It is such a big state, it would be a shame for you to make only one stop in Texas!
Will you post the date for Austin as soon as you know it? And what town in Arkansas are you considering?
I love road trips. I think I am living vicariously through you – planning your trip – travelling in that precious van!

    • sbranch says:

After Austin we have just a few days to get ourselves to Mississippi, and then to Nashville. The whole tour is like that, bookstore, drive, bookstore! We’re just hoping that we can meet our Texas Girlfriends half way, like we come from MA and they meet us in Austin. Easier said than done, but that’s what we hope! The date in Austin, is Saturday, June 18th at 2 pm. And I guess I made a mistake about Arkansas, and it’s really Mississippi! I get confused! Yes, Joe and I love driving across country, it’s a wonderful thing to do!

      • Fancynance says:

Oh, I will not mind the drive to Austin to see young all. 5 1/2 hours. But when you said Arkansas, I actually thought I might drive to see you more than one time. I wouldn’t even rule out Mississippi or Nashville! And yes, someday I hope to come to Martha’s Vineyard. I would much rather drive than fly. It would take awhile, but I would love to see all the sights. Can’t wait for June!

        • sbranch says:

Bring a friend, turn up the music, make cucumber sandwiches, and the 5 ½ hours will fly by! Hope to see you there!

  87. Bev says:

Such a fantastic episode last night and my husband and I thought Julian Fellowes must have read your blog when he brought Tom and Sibby back!!!! I am with you Susan Branch…tom and Mary just have to get together!!! Ohhhhh…we can hardly wait for next Sunday eve…counting the hours!!!

  88. Vivian in Tennessee says:

Where is your stop in Tennessee? Hope it’s near me.

I love, love Downton Abbey this season….best season yet, I think. And I agree with you about Lady Mary and Tom…they just have to get together. Violet is superb this season, except I could do with a little less arguments. She has some of the funniest lines on the show,

Loved the wedding and everything looked so beautiful. Mrs. Hughes’ coat did look very good with her dress.

Can’t wait for your next book.

  89. Karen says:

All the time I’ve been reading your blog I didn’t scroll down to see there are comments at the end until today. I caught myself smiling last night during DA. Today I told a friend that if Edith and Anna don’t get a happy ending, Julian Fellows will be in trouble from all the fans of the show! I haven’t always been attracted to period shows and missed the first few episodes when DA began. I only casually turned it on because of all the buzz but was immediately hooked. Now it is one of my most favorite shows–ever!

  90. Kathryn says:

    Susan,

No one was happier than me when Tom walked in last night. I have been rooting for him and Mary for a long time. Julian couldn’t possibly tease us like this without giving us a happy ending. Right? How are we going to survive after Downton Abbey ends? A glorious story. I want to see all the parts the British saw and we didn’t.

    Kathryn in Los Angeles

  91. Jodi says:

    Winter Greetings Everyone!

I love DA and last night’s episode was one of the best! I love Tom and also feel he is too good for Mary, but I think he might improve her!

When the sad day comes and DA is over, I would like to suggest a wonderful show called “Monarch of the Glen”. It is not a period piece, but is set in a beautiful mansion in SCOTLAND!! The Dunvegan Castle and surrounding countryside. The settings and accents and kilts more than make up for the sometimes predictable storylines. Julian Fellowes (yes that one!) and Richard Briers star in the show. My darling husband kindly keeps track of my shows, but I believe we watched it on ROKU and it is available from Amazon.com as well. I will be checking on Mercy House myself.

  92. Sharon Maier says:

I think it’s wonderful that so many of us think alike on Downton’s happenings and characters, and your summary, as always, is right on the money. Very reassuring that those two men I’ve been mixing up isn’t just me! Wasn’t Tom’s arrival just brilliant? And he looked magnificent. So much is going on now that the end of the episode is always a shock. What a joy it is to see such a “masterpiece,” and how we will miss it… See you in Austin, Susan…
    Sharon

  93. diana krieg says:

Hi there Sue ! So love getting your sweet take on Downton.I’ve been passing it along to some of my moms friends who adore it as well. The show is just as precious as ever .I too just LOVED all the white bunting and the Return of TOM !!. Please try to squeeze in another visit & book signing at moms again ?? The PA ladies are asking and would be so happy! I’m in the middle of watching a great netflix series called A place to call home .. an Australian drama.. just wonderful! Miss you & Joe. Lots of love – Diana

    • sbranch says:

Diana, so nice to see you here! Give your mom a hug for me please. I know we’re on the same page with Downton, hasn’t it just been great? Not sure we’ll get into your neck of the woods, maybe closest is Danville . . . not close enough I’m sure. Will look up the Place to Call Home. Thank you! I hope somehow we’ll get to see you in the 20 minutes we are in California! Never long enough, XOXO Love you, hi to the girls and hi to Jan!

  94. Julie Buck says:

Mosely and Baxter would be wonderful – he is a bit of a gloomy gus, but I think he must have been aware of what has been passing him by almost his whole life. I feel so sorry for Barrow, too – since we discovered that he is gay and is trying to find a way to fit in to a society that labels him a criminal, I have much more understanding for him.

Oh, I loved DA this week – I’m so glad that Mrs. Hughes (I mean, Mrs. Carson) got her way with the wedding, and wasn’t it lovely? So much more for the happy couple than the “nibbly bits” would have been! I’m off to look for my own white bunting, now! But I was thinking of you as we watched last night – and isn’t it funny? My husband, too, has a devil of a time telling the difference between the Dr. and Cora’s ex-fiance – he was constantly asking “Is that one a doctor?” and it was always the wrong one. And “Which one was she engaged to but his children were mean?” I still think she should be with the Doctor – I find him much more charming than the other fellow, and I do think everyone should follow my lead… hee hee.

Wasn’t it wonderful to see Edith so busy, so capable, and so confident? I love that she is sensible, too – not just rushing in to take over on a permanent basis, but taking the time to be sure. After all, she has her … ‘ward’ to think of too… But she was just glowing! She obviously has found her niche, and I think she realizes she can be happy just on her own, if she wants. That’s usually when love finally finds you…

Susan, if you find a way to get to the Northwest, I’m having a tea party for you – no ifs, ands or buts! I’ll find a way to make it happen. There is another wonderful independent book store up this way – in Bellingham – Village Books: villagebooks.com/ I’m writing to them now to ask that they get in on your tour… that is the most delightful place in the most delightful part of the state, country, continent! You MUST come – you just MUST!

    • sbranch says:

I’m with you, I think everyone should do it the way I want them to! I think we are going to miss the northwest this trip, we’ve sort of moved on time-wise, and have so many miles to go, but thank you truly for trying and for thinking about me. I will try again!

  95. Judy says:

I feel the same way about Tom and Mary….he understands her and I think he could handle her strong will.
Last night’s episode went by too fast for me. I am loving this season and I agree I think that something may happen to Robert,(heart attack) sniff sniff, and then Mary and Tom will take over the estate and live happily ever after.
I love reading your blog <3
    Judy from Oak Ridge

  96. Mary Baldwin says:

I thought there were lots of “fruitions” going on in last nights episode, so it felt more cohesive vs. being left hanging, …especially when TOM came into the room. I cried:-)

  97. Sara S says:

This episode was so bittersweet for me. It’s all about transition. So thrilled for the Carsons (!) and that Branson is back. BUT…IAM SOOOO afraid that Lord Grantham is going to kick the bucket (that is the proper English term for it, I do believe). Then, it will really be up to Lady Mary AND Branson. I don’t think a romance or at least fond partnership is out of the question for them. No, Cora is not a snob…but she IS part of the old aristocracy and that came out in her little tantrum she had. (She would NEVER have acted like this with the upstairs people) This was ironic, because her frustrations were really directed towards a hesitancy to embrace change at the hospital! Frankly, I enjoyed it in that it highlighted the fact that she is also human. And Mary called her mother a snob, but I’m sure that in addition to wanting the best for the Carsons, she was also a bit offended at Mrs. Hughes’ snub. Deep down that is. I think these old ways just die hard…and when you see the beauty that these people enjoy every day you can see why. The run-down great house that Barrow visits was heartbreaking. The place is in shambles…but heaven forbid a Republican work there! It must have been so hard, to know what to grasp hold of tightly forever…and to know what to let go of. Thank God they kept TEA!

    • sbranch says:

I would NEVER have acted like that either, ever. Although I’ve had to attack a sister or two in my closet. So?

  98. Julie says:

See you in San Luis Obispo, woohoo!

  99. VickeyB says:

Mrs. Hughes said she wanted a bit of a “hooley.” That’s Irish for “big, loud party.” Which is exactly what she and Mr. Carson deserve, don’t you agree?

  100. Cindy K says:

Susan, I thought of you as soon as Tom and Sibby showed up! How excited I was!! Everything seems perfect now. Tom looked so happy! And I did indeed see all the “clues”. I’m guessing Mary and Tom will get together but we won’t see a marriage. But we’ll see! The Carson wedding was fabulous! And I’m so glad Mrs. Hughes got her way on how she wanted it, and no one’s feelings were hurt. What a wonderful episode to ponder!
I must add that I am disappointed that you will not be coming anywhere near Minneapolis. I haven’t been able to make any of your tours. I guess I live in the wrong place, lol. Maybe one day!

    • sbranch says:

It’s a long way up there Cindy, I wish we could . . . we’re getting as close as we can but I’m sure it’s still a long way to go. I think the Carson wedding was much better than Mary’s first wedding which I thought went WAY too fast, although I did love the drive through the village!
