Bad Harvest!

The new greeting of good luck, Bad Harvest!  Bad Harvest and Rabbit Rabbit and Happy February!  Well, that was amazing. Downton, I mean. Is that what a bleeding ulcer does? Remind me not to get one. Oops, Spoiler Alert! It’s Season 6, Episode 5 of the best thing TV ever had. Or at least one of the top best things.  MUSICA

downton abbey

Off to the hospital Robert goes. What a nightmare dinner party!

IMG_5496

It started off so beautifully, Granny was busy unleashing the dogs of war, and enjoying the last big fight of her life, Neville Chamberlain, the future Prime Minister of England was there, but then, Oh No! Robert looks so sick, and suddenly he comes crashing onto the table in glorious technicolor. Visually it was terrible, but I also think the sound effects person got his inspiration from Niagara Falls. Then Robert tells Cora, who is now totally splattered with blood, that he’s always loved her, in a way of saying “goodbye.”  I couldn’t bear to take pictures of the carnage ~ I’m sure you saw enough of it too.  Up until that moment, I was LOVING this episode, but suddenly we were plunged to the depths of what looked like certain death for Robert, because obviously no one could live through something like that. Do ulcers gather blood? I mean good grief, a bear eating a man whole could not have much more blood than that. That was slaughterhouse five. Julian saved himself by bringing this mess to a conclusion without leaving us hanging. I doubt if he could have gone out in public if he hadn’t. When this episode finished I was crying and laughing at the same time.Kiss boring goodbye

LOVE DOWNTON ABBEY. Everything was wonderful! Blackmail, love, jealousy, concern, outrage, history, charm, husbands needing training, it had it all!

Then while they were all waiting for the ambulance, standing around talking, and what happens? The Dowager mentions the MARIGOLD secret!!!  And WHO is  in the background lurking and hearing every word?

IMG_5507

MARY!!!!  Didn’t we just GASP?? Out loud with OH NO!

IMG_5529

But she didn’t say a word. Yet. I had a shiver when I saw them coming down this hall . . . but, for a change, it was just a nice coming together of the sisters with concern for their father.

IMG_5532

Five seconds of nobody being mean. Yes, let’s save this confrontation for later… we know it’s coming.

IMG_5538

Mary assumes the reins of Downton. It’s lonely at the top.

IMG_5542

Mary thought Anna knew something about Marigold.  We close with Mary deep in thought, putting two and two together.  You can actually hear her brain ticking on screen. Something tells me she will figure it out just in time for

IMG_5457

Edith’s wedding.  Because we do love those last minute scandal eruptions! For the moment, we have a happy Edith! By the way has she told Bertie about Marigold? We wouldn’t want Mary to tell him, would we?

IMG_5458

Edith’s life is going well, she hired a new editor and has probably the nicest flat in London.

IMG_5463

And she has a nice boyfriend, who seems crazy about her. I love these people together.  They will make a calm sophisticated life together, lots of country life, pip pip and all that, but fun in London too, and he will love Marigold.

IMG_5467

Kiss her!  Kiss her!

IMG_5462

Yay! My wish was granted in a very graceful screen kiss.  I was sorry we didn’t get to go with them to the Cafe du Paris!!!

IMG_5366

But it was fun at the Carson Cottage having our first at-home dinner together, Mr. Carson being waited on hand and foot, just like when he’s at work. It’s hard being King, so many likes and dislikes to express, almost not enough time to fit them all in. Uh oh. Trouble in Paradise. Bubble and Squeak WITH Lamb!!!!  Has someone lost her mind? Those two things do not belong in the same room with each other! Oh boy is she rusty!

IMG_5367We wouldn’t want to throw the baby out with the bath water, because we love Mr. Carson, but he needs some lessons in marriage survival. That little giggle he gave when he asked Mrs. Patmore to help Mrs. Hughes “catch up with her cooking!” In front of Mrs. Hughes. IN the kitchen at Downton. He should start sleeping with one eye open. Mrs. Hughes keeps things inside.

IMG_5346

My little couple were busy bees this episode.

IMG_5357

Always together, playing brothers and sisters

IMG_5358

Tom teaching Mary how to be human

IMG_5385

Mary saying she could NEVER marry down.  Tom saying that his marriage with Sybil was a marriage of equals, that it wasn’t based on money or position.  Grow up Mary. “There’s no such thing as safe love.” The wise brotherhood of Tom. Wonder if she will notice. Sturdy, steadfast and true. You can't have everything quote; susan branch artIMG_5445

Loved this coat. Love that hat too, her first time in a Pub.  That is difficult to believe. How unfriendly would life be without pubs? She’s with her brother again, she goes everywhere with him, despite the fact that he doesn’t “play by the rules,” comes to the point, and throws his sister into the lion’s den.

IMG_5449

Him.  Henry Talbot. I was happy to hear Anna say she was wary of this guy too.  But I have to admit he has a beautiful smile! I did love it when he said, “Blast!” And, he speaks French.

IMG_5420

Branson even took  his sister Mary to watch the car show.

IMG_5422

Boys and their toys. Nobody tell me if you know who Mary ends up with. I love not knowing.  This way, in my mind at least, she’s still going to be with Tom. Despite the ten thousand clues to the contrary!

IMG_5479

Loved when Denker told Spratt she had a “passionate nature.” And he said, “Any more of that talk and I won’t be able to sleep.” I have never seen him so chipper, humming, singing, bouncing on his toes. For a moment we both thought we were getting rid of her, but no such luck.  Blackmail wins the day! That woman has a very strange thought process, going up and giving Dr. Clarkson a piece of what passes for her mind in broad daylight.

IMG_5396

The new little family.  The new Mrs. Mason-to-be, her jealous daughter Daisy, and Daisy’s new non-reading farmer footman husband.  What a darling group. How well they will eat, Picnic Teas and the like. Rather unfair to others to put the entire Downton cooking staff in one cottage! Mr. Mason’s red-letter day! Gets a free farm AND all the cooks! Besides being “tops in pigs” he loves to see a woman bustling around the kitchen.  No stinkin’ Bubble and Squeak with Lamb in this household!

IMG_5391

We had that whole thing with Baxter and Molesley, another opportunity for Molesley to stand by his woman, which he did, admirably, even though it ended up not mattering, but other than that, I couldn’t see why they were taking up screen space. Cut to Edith’s flat and let’s see the rest of it. Let’s go into the linen closet, the hat closet and the pantry where they keep the dishes. Right?  Okay, the shoes too.

linens

I’ll show you mine if you’ll show me yours. . .

Mrs. Patmore was talking about putting together a picnic hamper which I wished I could rummage through and look at the linens, old picnic baskets always had such beautiful linens. And it reminded me of the BYO Picnic Basket (Hamper) party we’ll be having in England next September when the book is finished and Joe and I go back to England on the Queen Mary 2, and take you all along for another virtual trip through the English countryside and, this time, the Scottish countryside too.  This is the big carrot at the end of the stick that I’m aiming for! Can’t wait.

We want to meet everyone in the same place where we had a picnic with our friend Rachel (this is her with Joe) a few years ago.  You can see it’s a . . .

wonderful magical place ~ called Stourhead in Wiltshire, England ~ we’ll be there in September this year (I’ll let you know when we chose the exact date) and hope to meet many of our English and European Girlfriends (and American too! All countries are welcome!) there for a BYO picnic lunch/book signing in these amazing gardens.pink-flowers

stourhead

It’s acres and acres of this kind of beauty designed a few hundred years ago by flowerthe famous landscape designer Capability Brown. There’s an 18th century mansion you can tour, a pub and a wonderful old church that dates to 1291  where Joe learned to ring the bells.  But it’s the walks in the rhododendrons and along the ponds that is the very best.  Very nice carrots indeed. And I’m getting closer every day.

IMG_5546

Here’s where I am on the book. Each of those pages is a double page spread . . . they are upside down so no secrets are spilled, but they are all done and being scanned now!  There are 16 chapters in all, right now I’m just finishing chapter 14.  I think it will likely end up about to be about 390 pages. It is getting very scary! Fluttery tummy and all. I don’t want it to end. I love this book. I hope you do too.Let the Fun Begin

IMG_5559

I’ve enjoyed doing some strange sorts of artwork to illustrate this new book.  I have never painted a dune buggy before!  But I write about starting to date again (after getting over a broken heart), and how you have to kiss a lot of frogs before you find Prince Charming . . . here is some frog kissing I was doing, only without the kissing. Trust me, this wasn’t my idea.

IMG_5557

Dating commentary is always fun.

IMG_5548

I included the whole story of why I began to take the train across country . . .

back of the train

How much I loved it and how romantic it was . . .

IMG_5550

And  all the times I’ve had to wave goodbye.  I know what I’m saying doesn’t make sense right now ~ these are just tiny hints, because I want to surprise you.  But one thing for sure, and you can depend on this, I promise no one with throw up a swimming pool of blood at any table in my book. That is my promise to you dear readers.

And now, for my special parting gift, if you love Downton, you would probably like to visit (or revisit) Jane Austen’s house in England, where Joe and I went on our last visit. This is your basic Calgon Take Me Away Moment to start your week off right.  Can’t wait for the next episode of Downton!  See you then Girlfriends! XOXO

Oh my goodness! all that blood! Good thing no one was watching with me, I just shrieked really loud. Well, we all got jerked into “almost reality”. My heart still starts pounding when I think about it. I am glad you could share what came next with us, my mind went numb. On to next week. Thanks Susan. Good Job as always. 🙂 toni b

  2. Jenny says:

So….the actor that plays Henry Talbott was in a sweet little movie called “Leap Year” with Amy Adams. He played an Irish bloke and if you haven’t seen the movie, I think you’d like it. Based on the idea that the Irish have a custom of women asking men to marry them on Leap Day! I watched it recently and thought “why does he look familiar” and then realized Henry from Downton!

    • sbranch says:

I’ve seen it and I loved it! I didn’t put two and two together, that it was him on Downton. Now I want to see Leap Year again!

Hi Susan! Oh my, I wasn’t sure if the Earl was going to faint away without visible signs, but no….. we sure got the visuals!!! I was in the medical field and blood doesn’t really bother me except I’m not really into the spewing aspect. Anyway, it was definitely a very active episode…lots of good and funny things happening. It is sooooo soooo nice to see Edith smile and get on with a good guy and the Bates’ are just glowing. I’m glad that Mary heard the talk, because really, she should have had her suspicions by now if she was paying any attention to Edith at all. However, we all know that she doesn’t really think much about Edith except when she is taking up Daddy’s time! lol….. Thanks for your summary. I so love to read your thoughts and I’m LOVING this season except for the fact that it is our last…but I can’t think about that today, I’ll think about that tomorrow!!!! 🙂

    • sbranch says:

LOL “the spewing aspect” — yes, definitely not into it! Yes, Scarlett, let’s think about it tomorrow!

  5. Judy F., Orange County, CA says:

Well, we’ve seen some dinners at that table but last night’s take the cake! Even though I knew it was coming, I was still taken back by ALL THAT BLOOD! Ugh…Poor Robert. However, seeing the coming attraction for next week, looks like he’s recuperating. Both me and my husband had a bleeding ulcer a few years back and thankfully, it wasn’t like that! Loving Season Six so much and will be deeply sad when it’s all gone.

Anxiously awaiting the new book, Susan! I’ve pre-ordered one for myself and my sister (for her birthday). Also, can’t wait to go along with you and Joe on your next trip to England…that’s the ONLY WAY I’ll be able to go! 🙂

  6. chris consentino says:

wow!! yes, hubby and I were aghast!! I knew something was going to happen, but, in fairness, could not have envisioned that!! yikes. having been thru at least 3 episodes like that with my own dear dad (after he had surgery for a leaking aneurysm…at age 86….and did great….got an ulcer and we almost lost him 3 times due to GI bleeding rather like robert) thought for the day….AVOID ULCERS!! well, anyway….each week I watch the previous episode right before the new one…last nite it tricked me up…I guess I forgot, and it all looked familiar to me…which is when hubby got me a cup of strong, hot, sweet tea!!! mmm. I revived. well, my ?? is…WHAT will we do after LAST episode?? oooh. oooh. I know…go to staples and buy the dvd. mmmm. have a good week, everyone. keeeep painting, Susan!!! brava!!!! xo

    • sbranch says:

Yes, avoid ulcers!!! Very good advice. If I saw myself do that, I think I would just give up on life immediately!! xoxo

  7. Lisa R (northern Az) says:

All I keep saying every Sunday when Downton starts, is ‘please don’t let anyone die!” But what a shocker this was!!! At least he didn’t die. Phew. Loving every single moment!

  8. Joan says:

I read in the Daily Mail last week that (in real life) Edith and the new non-reading farmer footman are “enjoying a blossoming romance”. Isn’t that interesting? But I can’t help thinking … poor Daisy!

    dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/article-3422318/There-chemistry-Downton-Abbey-s-Laura-Carmichael-Michael-Fox-enjoy-blossoming-romance.html

    Enjoy!

  9. That dinner scene was a bit more than I could take. Whew, what an episode! And it looks like you’re coming to St. Charles, MO which is where I live, and would be delighted to see you!

  10. Esther from Pa. says:

Hello Susan! I think everyone was stunned by all that blood. I can’t imagine what was to be learned by this bazaar blood bath! I, too, love the courtship of Edith and her man. I liked this right from the start. I do not understand the
Spratt and Denker relationship. She’s a little bit strange. Do love the scenes of all the ladies dressed up for dinner. The show happens so fast that I want to put the telly on “pause” and take it all in. Thank you for your camera shots because I can just stare at everything in the room. Great job for explaining everything also. Just like a movie critic, only better. Still enjoying the music too! You are a doll to keep us posted. Hope next week is better on the stomach! PS. loved the pictures at the end to remind us of where you are going in Sept. Wish I was squashed in your suitcase…..and I promise not to bleed!!

  11. Debra says:

I was pleasantly drowsing while watching Downton, but that scene woke me up! It seemed to me that the blood-gushing would never end!

  12. Kendra says:

I am bewildered still by the sight of projectile blood flying all over the Downton dining guests!! I am surprised that Jullian decided to take it that far….. and the scene where all the Downton ladies are getting their gloves and furs on to go to the hospital ? Can you imagine. I would be in to much shock to put on my gloves!!!
Part of me hopes that we don’t see Lady Mary find her next husband. I think Matthew might have been her one true love. I fear she is to self absorbed to fall for Tom. Besides it just seems a little strange for her to “possibly” marry her dead sisters husband, the chauffeur.

    • Kendra says:

I’m not sure my comment is coming through.

      • sbranch says:

WordPress “updated” my blog without really letting us know. When they did that, lots of the structure we’d added to it, like our little bird, for instance, and even access to comments, disappeared. It took a while for my computer wizard person to get it back together. He got the comments working for a little bit, but then when he fixed the bird, the comments disappeared again. I’m hoping we are back to normal now, so if you have problems be sure to let me know . . . I really appreciate it!

    • sbranch says:

      All good points . . . it’s a big wait and see!

  13. Regina Carretta says:

Thanks, dear Susan – the video of the car drive through a lane in the UK….plus Fred Astaire singing “Cheek to Cheek”….plus Downton Abbey and all its surprises….what more could we need?

    • sbranch says:

My computer person said he was going to try and rescue some of the comments lost because of the blog update, this must be one of them, because I noticed it was there before . . . just wanted to let it go so you can see what happened. Yikes!

  14. Karen Lotito says:

Rabbit, Rabbit and a Happy February to you, Susan! I think I will have to buy the whole lot of Downton Abbey on DVD and then I can watch all of it, every little bit. The snow is slowly going away here and it feels just a little like April outside. It is always around this time that I long for Spring but I won’t rush things. We may be on QM2 again this year, not sure when but it will probably be for the Fall Canada/New England sojourn as it’s known. We haven’t decided just yet as house projects abound. Enjoy your day and be well & be happy! I am so looking forward to your next book!

  15. Sherri Bassham says:

I so wish you would make a stop in Alabama, Birmingham perhaps? I am such a fan, I would love to meet you.

My copy of the DA dvd arrived on Jan. 26 but as with all of the seasons I do not open it until summer. I savor the show each week….. some of my girlfriends and I are having a finale party-should be a lot of fun and even more tears!

If you ever want to write a book about a pastor’s wife, let me know. I have been married to a United Methodist minister for almost 44 years! Oh, the things I could tell you! lol

  16. Hannah Wend says:

Wow! That was a bloody mess! But I’m sure things will turn out right in the end.

My girlfriend and I have confirmed reservations for your tea/book signing in Wilmette, IL in May. We are sooooo excited to finally meet you! She gave me my first Susan Branch book as a gift years ago, and I’ve collected them all ever since. I gave her “The Fairy Tale Girl” for Christmas and will give her the sequel for her birthday. We are both looking forward to it, and meeting you, too!

  17. Kiki Nakita says:

    Susan,

So delighted you are coming to the Carolinas. While your in Asheville, you’ll have to take an afternoon to wander around Biltmore. We go every year for Easter (my favorite) when the gardens are spectacular. We also go for Thanksgiving and Christmas. Last year they had all the costumes from Downton Abbey, you would’ve been in heaven.

    Excited to meet you,
    ~Kiki~

    • sbranch says:

I’m sure we will get to Biltmore. We went once a very long time ago, but I’m hearing it’s even better now. I was sorry to miss the costumes!

      • Charlotte says:

Susan, check online dressing downtown.com has a tour schedule for the dresses that were at the Biltmore. I saw them at the Biltmore and plan to see them again. Right now they are in Chicago. They will be in Anaheim at the Muzeo Museum and Cultural Center, Feb 2017-May 2017.

  18. No red dot on Washington DC, or surrounding area this book tour either? : (

    • sbranch says:

We tried. Politics and Prose in DC said no. That’s what happens sometimes . . . then we just moved on and I think we put in North Carolina instead.

      • Their loss…and mine too unfortunately. I guess the requests sent to them on your behalf had no impact. You should come to DC for the Library of Congress National Book Fair, and do a talk and book signing there one year. It’s an awesome event with all kinds of authors and illustrators! It’s in September this year, on the 24th. That probably is while you are on your trip “across the pond”, if I remember right. Looking forward to the new book! : ) Have a great day!

  19. bobbie Calgaro says:

I thought I would pass out. I never do well with violent scenes. Even though that was illness it was still violent. But hopefully he will mend and all will be well. I still don’t think you could have lost that much blood in that time and survived. But the wonders of tv prevail.
Love Edith’s new role and her sweet new boyfriend. It’s good to be the younger daughter no over expectations on who you will marry. He’s a real keeper. Hope that he isn’t boorish over Marigolds parentage. But I don’t think he will be. She deserves some happiness.
Once again we are all going to miss this show when it’s done.
I do so hope that they produce your story. It is really sweet too. I think it’s great that they are interested.
But sweetness is all its really about in life. Every time I think I want to be sophisticated or more modern, I realize that it’s too demanding of a lifestyle with no real attachment to what is really important in life. Simplicity, home, and family: which is why I enjoy what you write about, paint, and advocate.
    Have a great week!

    • sbranch says:

“No real attachment to what is really important in life.” Such an important thought. Thank you Bobbie!

  20. Carilyn Wolski says:

Hello Susan! Wishing you a fabulous February!!!!!! Good luck in the final writing days of the Isle of Dreams book……you are almost there…….you can do it……..so talented you!!! I’ve enjoyed your recaps of Downton, I so wish I was a watcher of this incredible TV show. I’m thinking to start watching all of these fabulous stunning past episodes this summer while you are traveling across the country signing and meeting all of the Girlfriends. It will keep me from tears, as I am unable to see you at any of the nearby Michigan locations you will be at, due to family events that conflict. I have the memory of meeting you when you came to Grand Rapids, and that is a little treasure in my heart that I will hold forever dear!!! How happy to hear you will visiting new cities, giving other Girlfriends an opportunity to meet you in person!!!! Take care of yourself and God Bless You for all you do!!!!! (P.S. The February page of the wall calendar is so pretty. Love all of the hearts! It just “pops” against my sage green kitchen wall !!!!!!)

    • sbranch says:

Thank you Carilyn! I kind of love it too. Quite cheerful! Sorry to miss you this time, but we’ll stay in touch!

  21. Kona Georgia says:

All that black mailing going on. Vinka to Spratt & in the end Granny Violet to Lord Chamberlain. What if Lady Mary finds out Marigold is Edith’s… Who cares… Oops! Doesn’t that mean she’s 2nd in line with Mary’s George being first.

    • sbranch says:

Not really, because girls can’t inherit! Something else to be mad about! If George couldn’t take over, Downton could go to a cousin before it would go to Marigold. The cousin could be some distant relative they never even heard of. Actually isn’t that how Mathew got into the picture, because of HIM, George is the heir, not because of Mary. I think.

  22. lin rader says:

So happy to read your update on Downton! I missed it last nite and was bereft thinking I would not know what happened! You are such a darling to keep us posted on this wonderful program. The fashions..the crystal…the china..the décor…ahh so heavenly. However the problems…they are larger than life..and all happening in one family! I really like Robert and surely hope he is not to be written out of the show…but we know there has to be a cliff-hanger to keep us gasping for more! We are gasping…can they hear us? The life of the rich and famous is far more complicated than we can imagine…and we thought we had problems? lol So much more to come and I cant wait!! Love ya

  23. Bob Wilks says:

YEAH!!! You’re coming to Memphis (I’m less than an hour away!)…3 days after my 50th Wedding Anniversary! (…uh, can I use something else for my name tag?)

    • sbranch says:

Pink not your color? Or the whole fairy tale girl part doesn’t quite suit you? LOL! Of course, I’ll just be glad you’re there!

  24. Jeanne DeShazer says:

I had the same reaction, though I knew it was coming. They dropped so many hints! So relieved he’s okay, in a sense…I mean gastrectomy? And then Mr. Carson’s “that’s none of our affair” one someone asked what it was. Not good, but no more fancy dinners for him..

  25. viv says:

I was a nurse in the “dark ages” and remember an intern and I working all night with a gentleman who had an episode much like this one. I’ve been retired over 20 years and it happened early in my career. It is one of the images I can still recall vividly. On a brighter note….I am so looking forward to your new book…and returning to England with you.

  26. Schotzy says:

I loved how Ms. Patmore told Daisy.. well, I suppose Mrs. Carson knows the mysteries of life by now.. something I dont know anything about. ” Then before you know it she is fluttering about after Mr. Mason..and then there is Daisy so definite that he just wants to be left alone….setting up for a “hot” kitchen for our next installment!

  27. The red of that blood was simply hideous. I shut my eyes and waited till I thought it was safe. Now the red of Mary’s lipstick, shockingly applied in public (!), was another matter. I really liked that scene — how things have changed!

  28. Ginnie says:

DA was divine, as usual! And speaking of books, when you are done writing your latest (my pre-orders are in!), get yourself a copy of Bill Bryson’s The Road to Little Dribbling. Sooooo funny and entertaining.

    • sbranch says:

      Oh good! Thank you Ginnie!

      • jane townsend says:

I so agree. I’ve read them all and this latest one had me in stiches!

      • Gill says:

Yes, my whole family (English) are addicted! My father, who knows so many of the places Bill Bryson writes about, was chortling away over the Christmas holidays and kept on reading ” just this one last paragraph” out loud to me! I can’t wait to get on to my own copy!

  29. Shirley Koch says:

Poor Robert! I closed my eyes, wasn’t sure I really wanted to look. I guess I’ll keep them open tonight when I re-watch Downton. And Daisy, I can’t believe she’s jealous of Mrs. Patmor after all Mrs. P. has done for her. Well we are certainly kept on our toes. Love sharing your blog. Thank you so much.

    • sbranch says:

Mrs. Patmore wants a boyfriend, and it’s definitely her turn! I don’t think I could ever look at that scene straight into the face!

    BLOODY HELL!

  31. Carolyn Fitzgerald Rodgers says:

You have sometimes written, “If friends were flowers, I’d pick you.” How about this from the curmudgeon George Bernard Shaw? “I like flowers, I also like children, but I do not clip their heads off and keep them in bowls of water around the room.”

  32. Linda W says:

Susan, actually bubble and squeak is quite good, made from cabbage and meat of your choice. My Sophia makes it often when hearth cooking at many 18th C. kitchens. I’ll scan it in and email it to you.

  33. Kat Fry says:

I always watch Downtown Abbey twice. Once the night and of and then with commentary by Sweet Sue! It adds soooo much! Each episode seems better than the last…impossible, but yet true! Love seeing Book People in “Keep it Weird Austin”! Already on all my calendars…searching for a cool hotel…making a countdown chain…139 days to go! Making a big Event of the Big Event! Jesse, the most amazing hubby ever (45 years! Together) preordered my Book! Loved seeing your work in progress. And your ‘carrot’. As always…Thanks ever so for Sharing with all of us.

  34. Lorrie says:

Wonderful! I know who Mary ends up with and I won’t breathe a word. Love the commentary. Looking forward to the new book, and we’re going to England this summer, too – The Cotswolds and Wales. Such fun to anticipate.

    • sbranch says:

I hope England is ready for us! So many people I know are going! See have to try not to kill each other on the road!

    • susie says:

What a wonderful trip you are going to have. I hope you will be driving so you can go on the backroads, which are like the roads in the video Susan posted. When in Wales, Make sure you go to the snowdonia area in northern wales where they still speak welsh, though they can also speak english. Google welsh men’s choirs and try to arrange to go to one of the practices if possible. Most are free and visitors are welcome, but they are usually one night a week, so try to find out in advance when and where they will be meeting in the areas you will be visiting. The welsh are unbelievable singers. It will be one of the most beautiful sounds you will ever hear. If you want to get an idea of what it will be like, google u tube and then type in welsh men’s choirs to listen to one…a good song is myfany which was sung in how green was my valley.

  35. Barbara in NC says:

    Hi Susan!
After Downton Abbey last night, all I could think about is what you would say about it! 😱
What a total bit of horror….I couldn’t believe what I was seeing! But I was so glad Robert pulled through …whew! I’m also very happy you will be coming to Asheville! Only two hours from Charlotte so I hope to come to the book signing in June. I saw the Downton costumes shown at the Biltmore Estate this past year…they were exquisite! You would have loved them. It would be great if they put them all in a collection in a museum …such treasures.
Well…let’s see what next week brings on DA…

    • sbranch says:

I knew something bad was going to happen to Robert, but never in a million years did I expect that!!! By the time I got out of shock, the phone call came that he was alright!

  36. Barb from Ohio says:

I spoiled my self for the outcome of this season because after last night, I just had to know. Not breathing a word but am loving this season so far, except the graphic content last night. Robert complaining and holding his stomach in every episode so you knew something was going to happen sometime. Happy Edith is finding love, not happy with Carson’s complaining about Mrs Hughes cooking. She probably hasn’t had to cook in years.
One thought I had about the dinner scene was they all must have had a blast filming it. I thought Mary should have been too worried about her father to pay much attention to what she overheard Violet say about Marigold, but you could see the wheels turning. You know she’s going to say something sometime. Wish those two sisters could get along. Nice to see Isobel rising above differences and being so kind to Violet.

    • Barb from Ohio says:

I’m also glad to see Hudson, Ohio’s Learned Owl Bookstore on your travel map. Will be looking forward to seeing you there; have ordered your book!

    • sbranch says:

Sometimes I read the last paragraph in a book when I’m only half way through, to allow just a tiny taste of it, because it’s just too unbearable not to do it!

      • Susan P. says:

OMG I also will read the last few paragraph of a book …okay (to my sisters who might read this) I read the last chapters, and my sisters get so upset with me. But it does allow me to follow better and then I can see the real reaction of the characters as they go through the book..how honest they are or how bad they can be. Even when your book , The Fairy Tale Girl came I started at the first chapter and I just had to jump ahead to the middle then to the end….even though I knew what happened…had to find out HOW….Your writing and art just draws me into your world…also because I grew up during that time too and was in SLO for visits with my sister, that lived there and went to school at the college. Who knows…maybe our paths crossed…I’ll have to read the last chapter of my life to see if they did…hahahaha LOVE YOU AND ALL YOU DO TO MAKE US ALL HAPPY. Love, Susan P.

      • Pat Mofjeld says:

I do the same, which drives my husband nuts! He says he would not want to keep reading the book then but I just can’t wait to see what happens and then go back to reading where I was… 🙂

        • sbranch says:

Sometimes I still can’t tell what’s happening in that last paragraph, but I’m pretty strict about confining it to that. I really don’t want to know the ending, but maybe just if my favorite character is still there at the end!

      • Barb from Ohio says:

It’s not a good practice to get into and cheating yourself of any surprises as they come, but I only know a few things about what will happen eventually this last season. It’s no substitute for watching the episodes and absorbing all the glamour, beautiful costumes and interesting little tidbits along the way, not to mention all the great one-liners uttered by Violet, Mary or even Carson or Mrs. Patmore. It’s why we like to watch the episode a second time to take in everything we missed the first.

  37. Cindy Maulin says:

hi susan!! we spent the day traveling south to meet up with friends in sunny Marco Island, FL, but that did not preclude me from racing to your blog( via iPhone) to find the recap and conversation…and true to form..there it was!!..another wonderful DA recap ….did you not just love every moment?…I did too and will miss it terribly…. Each week I try to guess which phrase you will use as your blog title on the recap and I must say…this week I nailed it!!! “BAD HARVEST”…..love the story and that they are so happy!! My ever- struggling- trying- to- keep- things- straight- at Downton husband exclaimed…” oh..like ‘Break A Leg’ ” He is such a hoot…..I must admit that I was a bit unnerved by the dinner blood bath….I felt like I was watching “The Revenant” all over again…(God forbid!!) They all are wonderful in their roles and I can just sense that each character is winding down and finding their place….sniff sniff..so deserving of the SAG Emsemble Cast Award for Series Drama….I got most of my comment typed in the car, but then it started to rain and I had to sign off as I was pretty sure that Jerry was wanting me to tell him exactly how and how not to drive 🙂 Congratulations on “Isle”….we cannot wait!! A milestone for you and lucky for us….wish us “Bad Harvest” as we make our way to the Sunshine State….. love, cindy xoxoxox

    • sbranch says:

I love every moment. (Except you know what) — but this episode was fabulous. Too good for only one viewing. Bad harvest darling, break a leg! 🙂

  38. sylvia in seattle says:

“Bloody Hell” indeed!! 🙂 The perfect Downton review. I wrote something longer which somehow disappeared, now I don’t care cause this one is perfect. I’ll just say I’m warming to your wish for a Mary and Tom romance. Some situation would have to develop where they are literally thrown together so that Mary discovers just how cozy and cuddly Tom could be after a hard day of estate management, thereby realizing that “marrying down” might not be so bad — and anyway they don’t HAVE to get married . . . Just sayin’. It’s all so much fun compared to “The News”.

  39. Joan Lesmeister says:

Eeek, I’m a week behind, I tried not to look at Downton update! I opened my eyes just in time to see Rachel, and the rest, & the lovely drive through England. You’re almost done…..2 more chapters, we can hardly wait! Thanks for the update, now I’m cracking the whip! xoxo

  40. Debbie from White Bear Lake says:

So close to Minnesota and yet so far away! Sad face.

  41. liz h says:

I knew they were building up to something with Robert. So glad it wasn’t his heart. We’re going to Scotland in September too!. Don’t worry though were traveling by train. Loved todays blog.

  42. Sherry Moran says:

Guess my post didn’t go through.
How do you find the places to stay in England? Do you use a travel agent? I’d love to hear your tips!

    • sbranch says:

The National Trust is brilliant for starters . . . They have rentals and also many historical places you will want to see, and they make it very easy. From there, after you get a little taste for it, there are lots of sites for rentals on line, with pictures too. I did an Appendix for A Fine Romance with links to travel sites, it’s at the top of the blog under I LOVE ENGLAND, or HERE . . .

  43. Pamela says:

I couldn’t wait to come here and see what you were writing!
I have never had to avert my eyes for that show and I had to last night. That was totally unexpected. Very disappointing.
Thank goodness we didn’t have to wait to hear about Robert. I didn’t think anyone could live through that.
So excited for Isle of Dreams! You are extraordinary!

    • sbranch says:

Yes, I definitely had to look away. Thank you Pamela, I’m excited too. . . I’m working on the last chapter today!!! And for the next few days, but I’m getting there . . .

  44. jane townsend says:

I’m loving “watching” (through the blog) Downton again. Nothing misses your eye Susan! Can’t wait for the next episode and “review”.

  45. Trudy says:

You will be more surprised by the next episodes of Downton!
There will be more blood, tears, angry and laughter!!!
Have seen this episode 3 times and looked away every time! They told this scene had to be done in one time so everybody was in a shock by seeing Robert with all that blood.
I wish there will become more of Downton-I did loved all the people who where within the scenes.
And I wish I can be there in England to meet you at the picnic!
Have a great time and good luck with finishing your new book. Look forwards to see it!!
    greetings,Trudy from the Netherlands

    • sbranch says:

I hope you can Trudy, that would be fun! Three more episodes for us, including the last “Christmas Special.”

  46. Sharon Byars of North Carolina says:

Love, Love your comments on our favorite show. Watched an interview with Robert about the filming. By the time they actually filmed it, somehow, he over acted and the blood all over Cora was not supposed to have happened. A very nerve wracking scene for all! You have an amazing amount of stops on your book tour. I have lived in Austin, Tx and Bookpeople is a wonderful store. Also, I moved from Morro Bay never to look back. Was surprised to learn you will be there. So happy you are coming to Asheville ! Hope to see you.

  47. Good heavens! I’ve seen the whole series through to the end. I’m quivering with excitement for you!

  48. Tracey says:

When that episode of Downton aired over here, we were given a warning beforehand that it featured disturbing scenes. In each commercial break we were wondering what it would be, then it suddenly came to me. Daughter was adamant that I tell her my suspicion, but thought I was joking when I told her. I have actually seen this in my former life as a nurse. She was most impressed that I was right. I just wondered how they would cope in the laundry!

    • sbranch says:

That was nice, a warning would have been good. I thought about the tablecloth immediately! Not to mention the dresses. Eeeek.

  49. Rebecca Walsh says:

Good Morning and Rabbit, Rabbit. You have started me on a bad habit. I cannot start the month without saying Rabbit, Rabbit. Love the Downtown Abby summaries since I am not watching them and I love the fashions. Too bad we no longer wear hats and gloves. I remember my grandmothers when I was little would always wear hats and gloves.

    Take Care,

  50. Diana from Ohio says:

When you say you can’t believe all the blood believe it with ulcers! I know from experience this past month. My husband had open heart surgery, had been home for a week and middle of night passed out from loss of blood, found out it was ulcers below his stomach. Had to be given 4 units of blood in the process. It wasn’t pleasant to see that on DA but I do know it does happen if they are not taken care of. Blood thinner caused my husbands ulcers to act up as we didn’t even know he had them. So now they are fixed and he is getting better every day. I thank the Lord every day for his recovery.

I also think Daisy is becoming a harpy! Getting tired of the character being selfish in her attitudes. I think it is neat with Mrs. Patmore and Mr. Mason.

    • sbranch says:

They seem to be making her more immature. Probably before this is over, we will see her comeuppance. Hopefully she herself will fall in love.

  51. Maureen Graham says:

Hi Susan, I just booked my first long train trip! I will be traveling from Jackson, Michigan to Newport News, Virginia to visit my darling sister!!! You are my inspiration. Maureen

  52. Patricia Ruehle says:

    Terrific commentary as usual Susan!
There is an interesting and informative article about the filming of poor Robert’s gastric attack. Go to vanityfair.com and read “How Downton Abbey Pulled off Lord Grantham’s Medical Scare.
How I wish you were including Houston in your book tour. Austin is just not close enough.
Henry and I are hoping to visit Martha’s Vineyard this Spring. Any hints on how to locate good accommodations?

  53. Carol from CT says:

Just read this Downton Abbey tidbit on-line ………
“Although the award-winning period drama still pulls in huge audiences and is not due to be recommissioned until the autumn, the report also said that Fellowes wants to start writing his long-awaited US drama for NBC, ‘The Gilded Age’.”
We might be talking and blogging about that new series some day.
    theguardian.com/media/2015/jan/29/downton-abbeys-future-in-doubt-after-julian-fellowes-fails-to-commit

  54. Jo says:

Sir Julian having his “horror movie” moment, would that really happen?
Loved all but the above and glad that Robert is still with us, after weeks of tummy complaints, I was afraid he was a goner.
Can hardly wait ’til next week, the tying up of loose ends is a delight.
Then, anticipation and enjoyment of travels in America, England and Scotland, life doesn’t get much better.

  55. Robin in New Jersey says:

Oh Susan! I love reading your take on Downton. Monday, online somewhere, I read about the making of the bloody scene. See if you can find it somewhere, it was very interesting. They “practiced” on a set and then did the actual scene after seeing how far the “blood” would spatter. They did not correctly estimate and it got on the vintage dress Cora was wearing. 🙁 My girls and I were watching and we all gasped in horror and shock. So glad Tom is going with Mary to all these car things. Still hoping they end up together. 🙂 Hoping I can get to you book signing when you are here in Jersey.

    • sbranch says:

      I do too Robin!

    • KarenP. (Wisconsin) says:

I am starting to think that Tom is playing the romance advocate (i.e Cupid) for Henry and Mary but secretly has a deep “non-brotherly” love for her and it will all unfold rather abruptly and rather passionately at perhaps the finale episode. 😉

      • sbranch says:

Me too, me too, me too…. he probably hears the part about not Marrying down too, and takes it a bit to heart. Someday, in a perfect world, she will see the difference between marrying up and marrying down.

  56. Denise says:

Hello Susan! Have never had the pleasure of attending one of your book events-but with your upcoming visits to Plainville, MA and Madison, CT-I may have to attend BOTH, as they are only about an hour away. Yippeee!

  57. Carol from CT says:

    Dear Susan,
I wonder if Julian Fellowes ‘parted the Red Sea’ as a satire on the strictness of the Edwardian dinner table and dinner etiquette we’ve heard so much about! The world-wide at the point of take-off had to have been a perfect unison. All I can do is shake my head and remember how Julian Fellowes can capture and freeze his audience. Notice Mrs. Patmore’s continuing interest in Mr. Mason? I was tickled to hear the phrase ‘bubble and squeak’. I have the Emma Bridgewater Black Toast dinner plates that read, “bacon and eggs bubble and squeak”. We use them every day with delight. I read about b&s and discovered it’s a fried dish with cabbage and leftover vegetables and meat from a previous meal. The noise the cooking made was used as the name. I think it’s now a label for combining and cooking any leftovers for the next meal. We all have our own concoctions of bubble and squeak, don’t we? Lord Grantham certainly had his own bubble and squeak in this episode! Crikey and Blimey!
Love, Carol from CT … tra la

  58. Carol from CT says:

More on Julian Fellows….”The ‘Downton Abbey’ creator and sole writer discusses waving goodbye to the Crawleys, a ‘Downton’ film and his upcoming project with NBC. The end is finally in sight for the Crawley family following Thursday’s announcement that the upcoming sixth season of Downton Abbey will be the last. But for the hit show’s creator, executive producer and sole writer Julian Fellowes, there won’t be much time to sit and reminisce, as he’ll be diving straight on with his long-awaited NBC project, The Gilded Age.
Having previously stated that he wouldn’t start work on the show — set among the upper echelons of society (where else?) in late 19th century New York — until he had completed Downton, with the latest news he has now admitted that he’s “started thinking about it. “But I do want to be off with the old love before I’m on with the new,” he tells The Hollywood Reporter. More of same article…..hollywoodreporter.com/news/julian-fellowes-nbcs-gilded-age-784885

  59. Troy Louise says:

Love your recap of Downton. It’s the only TV show I look forward to watching, and am dreading the end of the series. It was a bit over the top with all of Robert’s blood, but so glad he is going to be okay. What would all of his little grandbabies do without their “Donk.” I just really hope that poor Edith ends up married to her new guy. I am looking forward to your new book – that should help ease us out of Downton.

  60. DENA says:

OK This the third time I’m writing this , for some reason its not being sent.
i did read your takes on downtown abbey, Till now I had surgery on rotator cuff , right arm so i ordered the series 1-5 to see what all the talk was about, and taped the 6 season till i saw 1-5. The dvd’s arrived the day after surgery, and it was hard to stop after i got started watching them. The big secret of marigold is so crazy, how they didn’t figure that one out, she goes away for 10 months, so attached to see the child. DUH , think a mother would know! And why she didn’t just tell them , they took it very well, Just say and get over, it will come out eventually , AND The blood was an OMG moment, especially when he was spitting it out on all the beautiful clothes!! and so sweet to tell his wife he loved her. BUT with the surgery i had i did the same thing) you never know! I Loved reading your take on the shows. I have enjoyed them. Now that i don’t have to concentrate on the story, I’m rewatching them so i can look more at the clothes, hats, lamps pictures on the wall , EVERYTHING, so exciting to admire! One thing i really loved was the long fresh egg holder that was on the kitchen prep table, reminded me of you, i could see a small version of it in your kitchen. Well patiently waiting for next week and your point of view on downtown Abbey. Keep wanting to say downtown. Also your teasing us with some glimps of the next book, i already preordered mine .

    • sbranch says:

WordPress, unbeknownst to us, “upgraded,” causing all sorts of trouble. Hopefully, it’s better now. I know, I wanted to yell, save the tablecloth! The kitchen always gets me. I love it in there.

  61. Lynn says:

I might be in Scotland in September this year, when you are! How fun to maybe run into you there! Downton was wonderful, even with poor Robert.
    Do not wantthis to end…

  62. Betty Kirby says:

I’m ready to cry, Everytime I think of my very most favorite show coming to a close! Nothing has ever come close to holding my attention . It’s just so very sad, all the characters are lovable, except Barrows! But love, love , the wit of Maggie Smith. The old girl has the best lines!

  63. Kathie says:

The English are so pleasant, really. I just seem not to be able to get enough of them. My latest quirk is watching Father Brown Mysteries. They’re old; and wonderful; and English. Am enjoying Downton so much, too, and agree with you so much. We’ll breath inspiration across the seas to Julian so it’ll be Tom and Mary; Tom and Mary; Tom and Mary (just like Babes in Toyland); even though we know he’s already written it and it’s in the can. We’re so excited about what is going on with you becoming a big screen entity, getting the next book, planning your book trip and journey abroad. I can’t do all these things so you’re doing them for me. Hugs of appreciation, no end, dear. Kathie in Odessa

  64. Inkslinger says:

Hi, just found your site by total accident. I arrived on your post about how you started to paint. Truly inspiring. I think everyone should try something new every year. My wife says I have far too many hobbies/pastimes, but if you don’t try you’ll never know. I’m not a follower of Downtown, but I did watch the very last episode. I found it absolutely thrilling and now I’m keen to watch the whole thing from beginning to end. I’ll have to buy the box set.

Anyway just thought I’d say hello.

    Great site.

  65. winnie Nielsen says:

Susa, my response yesterday never posted either. I see where someone else had issues as well. Anyway, Sunday night was a nail biter for me the entire time! There are so many twists and turns right now in the show that it is hard to get a vibe on what is actually going to happen. Julian Fellows definitely has my undivided attention ALL WEEK long! For the life of me, I just don’t have any idea how things will end. All these hints, but nothing concrete to hang my hat on, so to speak.

I had not heard of Mr. Fellow’s next project but it sounds exciting and I look forward to learning more as details unfold.

In the meantime, I am so GLAD that we have your new book to look forward to this Spring!! When Downton finishes, it will be nice to have something to anticipate that we can all share here together. Perfect!

    • sbranch says:

Normally, I can almost always figure out what is going to happen in a movie. Within reason . . . but not with Downton! Even when I think I know what’s going to happen, ie Robert’s illness, I could never guess the WAY it happens! It’s magic, what Julian does. My book. It’s a hundred pages longer than the last one. So it will take a little longer to read and not go by so fast! I can’t wait to hear what every one thinks of it, but even as I write that, I get a little fear shiver! Very exciting time for me. Thank you Winnie!

  66. Regina Carretta says:

second time sending (what does “awaiting moderation” mean?)

    trying again –
Thanks, dear Susan – the video of the car drive through a lane in the UK….plus Fred Astaire singing “Cheek to Cheek”….plus Downton Abbey and all its surprises….what more could we need?

    Just a test…Wednesday AM

  68. Susan Morgon ( an Ohio gal in SoCal ) says:

Testing….fingers crossed that this will post! Weren’t there so many interesting tidbits in the last episode? During the scene where Mary and Tom were walking the grounds, my husband said,” Are we seeing the next dynasty of Downton beginning?” I enjoyed telling him that we were way ahead of him and had been discussing the possibility for awhile. He was amused to hear that we think Henry’s head is too narrow! And now we have Tom going all brotherly in his advice. I thought the comment that Anna made as she and the mister were discussing Mary was quite interesting. If I could only remember it! I really thought I would! But it seemed to me that the comment would apply to a man like Tom. The dinner scene, oh my! Except for that part, I thought Robert’s illness would be more drawn out, requiring more equipment, etc. than the local hospital had. Still, it might have been enough to put an end to the controversy. One last comment on DA – I wonder how long it will take Mrs. Carson to give Mr. Carson what – for! He forgets that his wife isn’t a staff member who needs further instruction. As always, your recap was fun to read. I especially enjoyed the artwork you shared from the book. Can’t wait!

    • sbranch says:

Thank you Susan! We are on the same page Downton-wise! And your comment is here, a good sign! Hopefully it’s working for everyone now! Thank you for the test!

I hope you’ve never seen anything like that!!! (If you have, please don’t tell me!) And, thank you for being there, because people in your line of work are true heroes, I could never do it. As for England, everything is close together, the whole country is about the size of Louisiana. It’s hard to say because they are both amazingly beautiful places, but I would have to go with the Lake District (you could drive through the Peak District on your way).

EEEK! I am so excited to see that my home state is on your upcoming events list!!! I’m surprising my Momma with a day trip to come see you, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. I know we BOTH will be looking forward to meeting you on May 13th!!! P.S. I couldn’t read most of this blog post, b/c I still have this episode of Downton Abbey, waiting for me on my DVR!!! I plan on watching it tonight 🙂

Dear Susan–I sure wish you were going to Ireland too. I spent 2 weeks there in Nov. and was just amazed at how beautiful and peaceful it was there. The people and food were lovely. The tea and breakfast, with porridge, oh so good.
The sheep and stone walls were something Ill never forget. Since I was on a Catholic pilgrimage I was amazed at the country’s history. Pam

  76. Charissa says:

Just another test… Quelle horreur!!!… the blood and the blog problems;)

  77. Teresa O says:

Simply love your recap of Downton Abbey; it’s almost as much fun as watching the show. I stay on PBS on Sunday nights because right after Downton comes Mercy Street which is a fine show, also. What I’m most excited about is that you’re doing a book signing or 2 in Ohio. I’m so hoping I will be able to venture to the Learned Owl in Hudson, Ohio. Living across the state makes it a bit of a jaunt but oh how I hope to make that trip.

  78. Virginia says:

I don’t think things are working right yet. I have sent three replies before this–none said ‘awaiting moderation’ and all disappeared. And you probably won’t even see this if it disappears too.

  79. So enjoying your Downton updates. Sent them to my daughter. We’ve been hooked since season one. Hang in there on the book. Books are hard. ~~Dee

    • sbranch says:

They are hard. They are the light and they are the deepest dark. Joy and misery all wrapped into a nice little package. Mostly joy. Thank you for the moment of commiseration. 🙂

  80. Stephanie W says:

Was wondering if you knew that Daisy Mason (Sophie McShera) also plays a part in Galavant? I just watched Galavant on DVR last night and there she was. Good to see that she is working elsewhere.

  81. Marianne Doyle says:

My husband and I have said, “Rabbits, Rabbits, Rabbits” the first of every month before getting out of bed for 47 years and it really has brought us good luck! Give it a try!!

  82. Ann in UK says:

Regarding Robert and ‘that’ incident at dinner – I am quite sure a person as well brought-up as Robert would most definately NOT have allowed himself to spew-up across the dining table! He would have covered his mouth with his napkin and moved or at least turned away from the table. The English upper class are well trained in self control. I found it quite disgusting to see.

    • sbranch says:

We had a president that accidentally threw up at a state dinner in another country. He was sick. I think sometimes there are eruptions that people can’t control. Please God let it never happen to me!!!

  83. Rosemary says:

The fun thing is, I got a text from my bff this afternoon and she said ROAD TRIP. JUNE 18. AUSTIN. Something’s up! Of course I said yes, then said what are we doing in Austin? We will drive from North Texas to be there at Book People!
Your recap of Downton Abbey is as entertaining as the show itself! Which extends the life of the show in a wonderful way. I just cannot see Tom and Mary…yet, she is possibly one of my favorite characters in her snobbery. We surely hope for happiness for all of the characters and it is starting to take shape. Love the Gilded Age possibility and the Biltmore reminds me so much of the Abbey….the upstairs/downstairs aspect. The downstairs was my favorite, I think.
So happy for your getting to return to England and sharing it with us. Our trip last May was absolutely the most wonderful and would love to go again. So, now I get to go with you. Happy Days! are here again. Thanks, Susan, for any and all writing you do. Cannot wait for the book.

    • sbranch says:

I love her too! She’s a brat, but she can’t help it! Yay, you’ll be at Book People! SO nice to know I’m not going to be alone out there! 🙂 xoxo

      • Chris Wells From Knickerbocker, W. TX says:

You won’t be alone…..it’s A BIG STATE! We are coming from everywhere! You are so worth the trip!

  84. Ann Woleben says:

Susan, your Downton commentaries are priceless! I’m still getting over the dinner party scene. Boy howdy! What a mess! Everything on this series is moving too quickly now. I really don’t want for it to end. I was so disappointed when I did not see a red dot in Virginia for your book tour. What can I do to entice you to visit our state – mint juleps, warm breezes, southern accents and really nice people. Getting excited about your new book – just in time for my birthday!

  85. Stephanie C. says:

Dear Susan, I always look forward to your comments on Downton Abbey, but when I began reading about all the blood at the dinner table, I thought we obviously didn’t watch the same episode. But then as I continued reading, it occurred to me that I had fallen asleep! Thank goodness I was able to watch it again to see what i missed, WOW, That was quite dramatic! I just Downton Abbey and will hate to see it end:(

Now, about “The Fairy Tale Girl”, I have been savoring every page, every chapter and didn’t want it to end. I laughed and I cried. I LOVED it and can’t wait til the new book is out!!! It’s amazing how much we are alike:) I really enjoyed reading about your life. From one Fairy Tale Girl to another, love you Susan.

    • sbranch says:

Thank you Stephanie. I’m in that finishing sort of “fear world” that happens when you’ve spilled your guts and are thinking, “what an idiot.” So your words came at exactly the right time! THANK YOU! I know it’s going to be just fine! 🙂 xoxo

      • Susan Morgon ( an Ohio gal in SoCal ) says:

Just a little extra reassurance – we are loving your story and can’t wait to hear more! Share to your heart’s content! Hugs!

  86. What fun last Sunday night was for Me,so much excitement.I just couldn’t believe the eruption of blood Dear wonderful Robert had to endure in public. The scare of it all for everyone in the room.I was sure surprised that the director and Creator held nothing back. Then when the family started talking about other subjects, that too blew Me over.I just now thought… I should include Your tour stop to Pasadena on My regular calendar. I have time to plan a long weekend with My hubby in the area.

  87. nellie says:

Well, this is a test! Second attempt to comment didn’t make it either.:-(

    • sbranch says:

Well here’s one, let’s see if it goes up.

      • nellie says:

Yes, it did make it, but now I can’t remember what I wrote the other two times.LOL

Already time for Downton Abbey tomorrow night! Couldn’t believe the scene at dinner! Mercy me! Hope Robert has had a good recuperation this week!

It is most exciting to read that you are making such excellent progress on the book!

This place where I am typing is very different from the other spaces I’ve had previously. I don’t know if that’s due to that automatic “updating” my computer has done, or if it’s a real change on your blog. Hopefully this one will make it, too.

        xo Nellie

  88. Debbie Noyola says:

Hope the 3rd times the charm. Just trying to let you know that I love, love, loved your books. I checked out The Fairy Tale Girl & A Fine Romance. Read The Fairy Tale Girl first, didn’t want it to end, then A Fine Romance. I’ve been to New England but never England proper. It sounds dreamy. I love quaint cottages, peaceful countrysides & thoroughly enjoyed “seeing” it through your words, photos & illustrations. I turned them into my local library today, albeit reluctantly! I can’t wait for Isle of Dreams.

  89. Bebe says:

Thank you for your blog posts! You never fail to make my day– especially with the artwork and the lovely trips through England– an artist’s dream!

  90. freda says:

Thank you Susan for this post, loved it and love Downton Abbey.I pretty much have the same feelings as everyone else about this episode and will miss it when it is finished. But I just want to say I was hoping that Mary would go to Ediths room and confront her about Marigold. I hope Mary will have compassion for her when she realizies what she has been through and that they will become best friends .Afterall there is no girlfriend like your sister.

  91. Margot in Sister Bay says:

    Testing…123

  92. Wow! It finally worked. I had a couple of sleepless nights, so I wrote knowing you would be up too…BUT the comment didn’t post. Hey, there is always snail mail.
I am so happy that you are in sight of the finish line with the book!!!
As one girlfriend wrote…Mary putting on lipstick in public, gasp! My grandma was in the same age group as Mary and Edith, and first of all it still wasn’t so accepted that the average gal wore lipstick…and secondly, none of her purses had mirrors in them. I think women use compacts then.
And no a bleeding ulcer is not that dramatic! Crazy!!!
Enjoy the snow I sent your way.
    Warm hugs,
    Margot

    • sbranch says:

She could do the lipstick in front of her “brother.” Erk. Thank you for the snow, it’s coming down like crazy out there and very beautiful!

  93. Annie in IL says:

This is sorta off track of ‘Downton’, but not totally. Did you know there is a zombie movie of our beloved Jane Austen’s wonderful ‘Pride and Prejudice”???AND to top it off, Lady Rose is in it as is Charles Dance!! I found the whole idea revolting. What is it with this zombie stuff?? I’m just too old, I guess.
“Galavant’ is a take off on the knights and ladies of yore. Our dear, ill, Robert was in an episode at the beginning of this season.
Also wanted to report my dearest husband purchased for me the elusive “Harvest at Stillmeadow”. It is an ex-library copy and is sun-bleached and stained from Scotch tape, but I’ve got it. Usually found very expensive copies; he said this one was ‘reasonable’ and it is a 1940 edition. Gladys lives on in our hearts.

    • sbranch says:

I don’t get it either. Zombies. What for? Congratulations on the Gladys book. Hard to find and so fun when you do!

  94. Peggy Sweeney says:

I truly and I mean with a heavy heart truly, miss England! Thank you for the sweet reminders of how wonderful it is.
Well, I am completely obsessed with watching chef Alice Waters , I am doing research right now on how we can improve school lunches in our schools, any how, I came across Alice, she is so lovely ! I had to tell you about her because she reminds me of you in a lot of ways, she is also from California, maybe that’s why I am so drawn to both of you because I am a California native myself.
Hope your enjoying the snow ! 😃

  95. sylvia in seattle says:

Egad, Charles Dance and Lady Rose in a ZOMBIE MOVIE 🙁 Horrors. But darn, now my curiosity is aroused and I may have to check it out . . . Heretofore, I have avoided them utterly. Just too weird and I don’t understand this fad.

  96. Jan from Northern CA says:

I bought the series…..what series you ask….Well Downton Abby of course….lol. Started watching it on Thursday January 31st……almost finished season 4…..holy cow! It’s hard to stop……but I have work to do……my office is in our house…..but it’s hard to get back in there when you want to keep on watching the drama….and boy is there drama. Does anyone get a happy ending ever in this series?? I know….keep watching. I’ll be caught up with you all pretty soon.. 🙂
    Cheers
    Jan from Northern CA

    • sbranch says:

SO glad you’re getting into it Jan. Maybe the smartest most interesting thing I’ve seen in a long time. Going to miss it so much!

      • Jan from Northern CA says:

        Well……finished Season 5!
Guess what I found at Walmart today! Season 6!
I thought it was going to be a bit before I’d get to see it. I wouldn’t have been able to see it from the start on PBS. How did they release it ahead of time?
Well, back to it…..will try not to stay up too late tonite….lol.
        Cheers.
        Jan from Northern CA

  97. Barbara Flannery says:

Susan, I just love reading your blog and your comments on Downton Abbey, as the comments are the same I am thinking when watching the show. What are we going to do if Mary and Tom don’t end up with each other. How could she end up with anyone else after Matthew Crawley!!!!! The episode nearly killed me when he was killed. How could they? I just cannot believe that this is the last season of the show. Thank you so much for writing your wonderful blog, I run to it every chance I get!!!!

  98. Crystal says:

    Dear Susan,
I have been enjoying very much reading your old blog posts. Especially when you talk about Downtown Abbey as I love that series. I was wondering if there is any chance of your coming to Minneapolis or St. Paul, we have many wonderful bookstores. I would love to meet you in person as I feel that you are a kindred spirit. Sometime in the future I hope to visit Martha’s Vineyard and surrounding area, it sounds lovely. Bye for now, take care.
    Thanks
    Crystal

  99. Gill Smith says:

Testing from UK for the third time. Gill

  100. Gill Smith says:

    Wow it worked!!
Hi Susan, just writing to say how excited I am that you are hosting a picnic, here in UK in September!!! eeeek……that’s me getting excited!!!
It’s not too far from Devon, and my husband is willing to drive me, so I get to meet you!!!
Just hope the date allows…..fingers crossed. Gill xx
PS we are lost here now in UK, no DOWNTON on a Sunday evening. I am watching another good programme, Call the Midwife, set in the 50s. Love it, but it’s not the same😞

    • sbranch says:

Not the same, but good! And REALLY good that you are coming to the picnic, which looks like it will be Sunday, Sept. 18!
