Time for VANNA to go to work!

Hello dear ones! How are you this fine day? I’m good. Time for Vanna to go to work! Lots more to tell you . . . but first, MUSICA! 🎵 And then, more good news!First off, I want to make sure everyone got their WILLARD?  Sometimes he takes a detour into spam files … if you are signed up but didn’t get it, you might check your spam file and see if he’s there. And, if you’re having trouble, a new suggestion from one of our brilliant Girlfriends: put 162.240.10.175/~susanbs3/susanbranch/ into your address book! It worked for her. It’s like a “welcome home” when Willard tries to enter your email box. And last but not least, here’s a link to the newest newsletter! And now, shall we get right to it? The hardest part of every giveaway is choosing the winner. I’m SO GLAD it’s Vanna’s job ~ she is the responsible one, not me. 😜 It’s not my fault! But I wish this was loaves and fishes and everyone could win! Cup-half-full, cup-half-full, at least there will be two winners, and with all my heart, I hope it’s you. Because you deserve it, leaving all those gorgeous comments! Thank you!

So here we go, Vanna is here, perched on the edge of my art table, pink-cheeked with red lipstick perfectly applied, wearing a costume of lime green leotard with yellow-polka-dots, and her yellow daisy-topped bathing cap, perfect for swimming in paper, with just one tiny curl of her red hair peeking out. Poised to leap! Toes curled! Her knees bend and Up Up Up she goes (good thing we have high ceilings) and then, a perfect jackknife in the air, she’s DOWN! GONE, twirling and whirling dervishly amidst thousands of precious names . . . slips of paper are blowing all over my studio like confetti, and suddenly, breathless, she’s up! She’s just handed me the names of our two winners! 👍 And so it is: Behind door #1 there’s a signed (personalized if you like) copy of my hand-painted A Fine Romance (which, btw, if you already have it, makes a very good Valentine present❤️), AND, in addition, my new and very adorable England cup coming in April. Okay, I’m reading, I’m reading . . . . . and so, wasting not another minute, the winner of this luv-lee prize is, ding-ding-ding. . .L Y N N   B A R L O W !!!  (hint: the Lynn Barlow whose website ends in cox.net)Hi Lynn, Congratulations, you now have all the essentials of happiness: something to do: drink tea. Something to love: love cup. Something to give: give book. Something to hope for: you got what you hoped for! 💞

And for our second winner: Behind door #2, my new Home Sweet Home embroidery kit,

. . . AND my new Spring cup, also coming in April! Here we go once again. The winner is

A B B I E   B E C K
 (hint: the one whose middle name starts with an M)

Congratulations, Abbie! I hope we’ve made your day! I’ll email you both so you can give me your address! Makes me so happy. Only a little thing, a giveaway, but at least it’s something to show my great appreciation for all that you do, not only in the lovely comments you leave, but in the lives you lead. Amazing people, Girlfriends, one and all. And here’s another little Valentine thing I thought you might like, because it’s . . . so YOU!

A Valentine Bookmark you can print on card stock, cut out and laminate if you like, and give to yourself and to everyone you love! Just click HERE.So, what else?  I’ve been working like crazy on the new calendars . . . I thought you might like a preview of the 2019 wall calendar! This is January! You see why I love doing this, it’s like a Calgon moment, totally taken away while planning each page, thinking, “how can I make this month special, what would the Girlfriends like?”  I put a video of my Studio “in action” on Instagram yesterday, in case you’d like to tour the mess! I have to get everything done before we sail away early next month! 🚢 Not only the four 2019 calendars, but the summer cups too because we won’t be home until next July! I’m thinking about designing a Royal Wedding cup for the Summer collection. What do you think of that? If I have time before we go, I would love to do it! So romantic. And speaking of cups. . .
FYI to our British Girlfriends, Nursery Thyme has finally received the winter cup collection at their shop in luv-lee Devizes, or, you can find it in their online store HERE. They can deliver to England, Scotland, Wales, and to Northern Ireland.

Yesterday it poured snow, but today the sky is bright blue, the sun is shining, and this morning was filled with a wonderful sunrise that spread golden light all through our house.

Even on my crown! Very inspiring when it comes to dreams. A quiet joy. When the world was all in candle light and lamplight, I imagine people lived in shadows like this much more than we do now. Wavering shadows from flickering flames.

Something else, coming soon! New Castle Cottage kits, art printed on fabric, requires finishing and just a bit of embroidery embellishment. Everything happening at once since I’m trying to run out the door!

But so cute. The tiny company we’re working with to make these kits is called the Posy Collection ~ only two people, three counting Posy’s husband (which of course we DO) ~ we love each other already ~ they are such go-getters!

Posy just came home to Texas from their first show at the National Needlearts Association and sent me a photo! She’s so excited! Makes me love working with them. Nothing like a bit of positivity in this little world of ours!💞

You know Joe and I are sailing into Charleston, South Carolina on the Queen Victoria? 😲 We are! Parking right downtown in the historic district on March 11 (that’s like tomorrow!). At 6 pm that night, we’ll be meeting whichever of you Girlfriends that can make it at the Barnes and Noble Bookstore in Westwood Plaza. Read more about it HERE, and try to come if you can. 💞 Bring everyone! We can say Bon Voyage to each other because the next day we leave to sail across the wild Atlantic!

I’m calling it a spa boat this time. We’ll be on it for two weeks, and I plan to take advantage of the trappedness of it and arrive well slept, well fed, and well exercised! After racing to get ready to go, it will come as a shock to come to a full screeching stop at the gangplank! All the normal things I think about and worry about at home, I have to suddenly give up and learn to think about other things! Ommmm!Petey is beside himself. He LOVES hanging out in England.

If you feel like getting in the mood for going back in time along with us, watch the movie Mrs. Miniver. It’s a lovely movie on every single level, including history . . . but the house!!! That’s the killer. See the kitty on the floor? Need I say more? This is their dining room.

You see the fireplace on the right? Then if you look through to the chintz-covered chair in the living room, you see another fireplace. Heaven. And the stairs to the bedrooms are on the left. I loved how, in the old days, they would put curtains, not just at windows, but also at the entry way to rooms ~ perhaps, at one time, before heating, to keep drafts out. Isn’t it cozy?The stairs. The grandfather clock. Just lovely. Not sure why the hose and buckets are on the floor, but I love the plants on the left, and the plates on the stairs, all so cozy and real. These old movies are what taught me what I wanted in life. Mostly, old houses, curtains, candles, lamps, wallpaper, tablecloths, and family. Wonderful old movies like this one helped me to find my dreams.💞    Greer Garson and Walter Pidgeon and the Mrs. Miniver Rose. You’ll love it.

So, off we go, Oh, Girlfriends of Mine 💞 . . . back to work! Wishing you all the most wonderful of days. Count your blessings, we are all so very lucky. I’ll see you later! XO In case you see something like this: Gotta be ready! 😘

  1. Ann says:

    Not certain, but perhaps the hose and buckets were to put out any fires on the roof from German incendiary bombs? The thingy with a handle looks like a pump maybe.

    Can’t wait till your trip starts and we all go along with you. : )

    • sbranch says:

      Zakly what I was thinking, because later, they needed them! Me too, Ann!

      • sylvia in seattle says:

        Yes indeed. We had them in our attic in the 1940’s. Those were the days when you could fight back with a bucket of sand and a canister of water with a hose and pumper attached in case a bomb landed on your house! I remember those days so fondly. I felt brave and wanted to be just like Mrs. Miniver – well maybe not that hat she went back to the store for. . . 🙂

  2. Patty in Redlands says:

    Hi Susan,
    Congratulations to the winners! Every sip will be sweeter with those new SB cups. ❤️

    I feel stressed for you trying to get so much done before this next dream trip, and I hate to add to your to-do list, but a Royal Wedding cup?! Love the idea!!

    Take care.
    Patty

  3. Katie says:

    Susan Branch, I just love you. 🙂

  4. Sherry says:

    Thank you, Susan! Just simply THANK YOU! Love this Mrs. Miniver house! Need to watch that again.

  5. Carla says:

    Hi Susan: Happy Saturday! Do you know when the New Castle Cottage kit will go up for sale? Cannot wait!

  6. Carla says:

    PS… I could live in Mrs. Minniver’s home in a heartbeat. Just ordered the movie.

    • sbranch says:

      You’ll LOVE it Carla!

      • Vicki Gray says:

        Yep, Susan Allen Toth’s three books on England helped me find my way around there, over 20 years ago. Many of her tips (and most of her observations) ring true today. My Love Affair With England, England for All Seasons, and England as You Like It. Fun reads!

        • Vicki Gray says:

          I think I duplicated a previous reply. Here’s the new one I meant to send:

          Here’s a juicy factoid about Mrs. Miniver’s star, Greer Garson. Did you know she married the actor Richard Ney (who played her SON) right after the movie was made? Didn’t last long, but must have been quite a shocker at the time.

  7. Virginia says:

    Lovely post and congrats to the winners! Just curious–how DO you manage to take photos of the TV screen or monitor? Just love those stills and you see so much I miss. I bought the DVD of Mrs Miniver at Target some years ago and now must re-watch, looking out only for the furniture!

  8. Nita Nell Hurse says:

    All best wishes for a fabulous journey. Have you “found” Susan Toth…..she is a true Anglophile like you and me…..and her w riting is very good. ?
    Be sure to enjoy some sticky pudding with a cup of tea, while in the land of beauty. Bye for now….will be following you closely!

    • sbranch says:

      Haven’t found Susan Toth yet, I take it she’s a writer, I’ll look her up!

      • Lisa G. says:

        Yes, for heaven’s sake, read Susan Toth! 🙂 There are two of them. My Love Affair with England, is (I think) the name of the first one. (it was a long time ago I read it)

        And while we’re at it, have you read any Elizabeth Goudge? I HIGHLY recommend A City of Bells to you Susan! Please – you will love it, truly! It contains an old bookstore, a wounded WWI veteran, and grandparents and children. All set in a cathedral town with beautiful scenery and all the dreaminess that goes with it. Also, a mysterious stranger.

        • sbranch says:

          Thank you Lisa!

          • Jana Bauer says:

            Yes, Susan Allen Toth is a must. England As You Like It is the other title. She is a great writer, though these books have been out for a long time, I still will go back to read them again.

            Have a luvely trip, lovey! We went to Ireland this past May and have been to England and Scotland (in England,among other sites and places, we also took 8 days and walked the Cotswolds…such a fantastic way to meet people and see the country). Always ready to go back to these countries but southern Italy is our next destination.

            Enjoy your crossing!

          • sbranch says:

            Travel books are such wonderful ways to take little holidays without leaving home!

        • Marilyn S. says:

          And I loved Green Dolphin Street by Elizabeth Goudge! Romance, intrigue, broken hearts, New Zealand!

      • Jo'L says:

        Oh, my goodness, she’s just like us or the other way around! How we (my husband and I) found the way to visit in England.

      • Dianne says:

        Susan Toth is a writer of travel journals- 3 or 4, I think. She believes that you should cover a small area in depth each visit- an area the size of a thumb print. I believe her books are still in print. If not, I’m sure that used copies are available. I would love to wish you Bon Voyage in Charleston, but I’ve already registered to walk in the 30th Annual Shamrock Run in my area. The money raised is donated to a different local charity each year. I can’t wait to travel along with you, as you once again introduce us to all the things that you find so enchanting in the English countryside. You really have an eye for the beauty that nature has to offer. A heart-shaped puddle (Willard)- how many people would have walked by without noticing a thing. If all goes well I will be at Castle Cottage; I’m keeping my fingers crossed!!

        • Dianne says:

          It’s actually easier to find her books under Susan Allen Toth. Just noticed she has several books in addition to her travel books about England

        • sbranch says:

          I was lucky to have my camera with me that heart-puddle day! My fingers are crossed too Dianne, I think it’s going to be a very special day!

  9. Alice says:

    Many thanks, Susan, for brightening up a gray day in Greece — not the country! — a day when life has brought me challenges as well as encouragement. Keep up the good work getting ready for your next adventure! Alice

  10. Margot in Sister Bay says:

    For the Summer mug the boy with the flag and lilacs? I missed out on the House flag with that. I have the flag with the red VW bug.
    We had the most hilarious ground hog parade up here on the peninsula yesterday. It lasts about 5 minutes! Good thing as it was 10 degrees outside. Afterwards we all eat ground hog stew (pork really).
    It amazes me how fast you can get your artwork finished. You’ve done it so long it is like ✍️.
    Warm hugs,
    Margot

  11. Fae says:

    I love the picture at the end of your blog with the cows going over the bridge. Is that one of your paintings? It reminds me of a Louis Comfort Tiffany painting that is in our local Morse Museum.

    Have a wonderful trip to Great Britain!

  12. Trudy says:

    Congratulations to the winners!
    Oh a wedding cup will be great Susan and then give it to the Royal Couple!
    Cannot wait till the time you are in England and Ireland and we can read about your adventure!
    Have a great weekend
    greetings,Trudy from Holland

  13. Congratulations to the lucky winners of the giveaway! I love the bookmark, and here’s a hint: if you have a printer that will accommodate thicker paper, I like to print mine on watercolor paper because they look just like an original that way (and are also VERY sturdy). 😀 The trip is indeed upon you, dear Susan, and I look forward to seeing and reading about your adventures. Of course, Mrs. Miniver is among my very favorite movies. Well, several of the Greer Garson and Walter Pidgeon movies are, for that matter. They are two of my very favorites on screen and truly dynamic together… Mrs. Parkington, Madame Curie, That Forsyte Woman, The Miniver Story, etc. Oh, and have you seen Blossoms In the Dust? It is a heart-wrencher, heart-warmer of a movie. Cheering you on and hoping you are able to dot every “i” and cross every “t” that you feel you must before shoving off. Thanks for being so generous with your girlfriends!

    Blessings and bon voyage…

    • sbranch says:

      Thank you Christi … love the movie tips, and also the watercolor paper! I can imagine how great that would look!

  14. Beckie Page says:

    What an exciting post. I wish I were going with you, but I will as I will be waiting to hear and see everything you post about it. I wish you a wonderful and relaxing time. You deserve it! And who doesn’t love a royal wedding? Or a royal baby!
    All the best to you, your hubby and Petey!

  15. Kat says:

    It has been a busy year and I confess…I haven’t read your blog as carefully as I would like. I have a question…will you ever offer “The Little Things” mug again? I see it is sold out, much to my dismay. Thank you for a reply.

    • sbranch says:

      It’s not in the plans~ I’m sorry Kat. We offer presale so I know how many to order and then I imagine everyone has what they wanted. I usually add on a couple of hundred extra, but sooner or later they all go. The manufacturer requires quite a large number for their minimum order ~ not sure, after everyone has ordered, I could sell that many again. So they really are limited editions. Again, I’m sorry.

  16. Barb Murphy says:

    Loved the blog. Have a wonderful trip!

  17. Monique says:

    Bet you will love those new paints also..I have a new small set..for florals..Have only tested it..
    So talented Susan..so talented.
    Flipped the calendar to Feb..♥
    The excitement of going is so much part of the fun too.
    Enjoy.

  18. Marge says:

    Susan, you must be in heaven anticipating your voyage on the Queen Victoria. I think that anticipating a trip is half the fun! Speaking of Queen Victoria, did you absolutely love Victoria’s clutch bag embroidered with her dear little Dash and hate the catty French women who made fun of our beloved queen? Good luck with your preparations. 🚢

  19. Lorraine Macholz says:

    Oh how wonderful, happy Congrats to the winners!!! I would love to see a plate with the prayer that you have on the back of the Willard book!!!! It is wonderful! So sweet would make a lovely plate! Just a thought! Can’t wait for your trip. Can not go, but will enjoy it all the same through all that you do!!! Thanks for taking us along! You are fabulous!!!! Enjoy the trip!!! xoxo

    • sbranch says:

      Thank you Lorraine! So happy you can follow along . . . not sure what prayer in the back of the “Willard” Book . . . are you talking about the book with all the old snail mail Willards in it?

      • Lorraine Macholz says:

        Yes!!! “May God in his wisdom and infinite Love, Look down on you always from Heaven above” etc…. such a beautiful prayer for a plate!!! (just sayin’!!)

        • sbranch says:

          I love that poem, yes, it would be beautiful on a plate!

          • Pat says:

            That poem on a plate, it would be lovely. And I love the pansies on the new mug, my favorite! I too am surprised you have not read Susan A. Toth. The books mentioned are available in small PB, you could pack one to read on the ship! Are you really going for three months? So much to see! Looking forward to hearing and seeing all of it with you, starting with The Queen Victoria.

          • sbranch says:

            No, I’d never heard of her! Sometimes, when I’m working, which is almost always, I don’t get out much! I learn so much from you Girlfriends!

  20. Anne says:

    Oh My Susan,
    Pouring snow! We have pouring rain but no matter; all is cozy inside. I love Mrs. Miniver. I almost need to watch movies twice, once for the story and once for the decorating and costumes. I love getting your posts. Thank you for your contests; it is always nice to see what you give away. Congratulations the lucky winners.
    Enjoy the rest of your weekend.
    Anne

  21. Kay Bennett says:

    Hi Susan,
    I loved clicking on Instagram and looking at all your photos. So many sweet memories. You must be counting the days until your new adventure. We’ll be right there with you enjoying everything through your eyes and words. I know, even though you’re so busy, the anticipation of what’s to come is so exciting. You’re wished a safe and enjoyable voyage to my favorite place in the world.

  22. Joann in Ulster, PA says:

    As always, a splendid read and eye candy blog! Thank you! Get packin…and enjoy every minute!

  23. Congratulations, lucky winners!
    Yes, that movie had some great set design. Details! The movie, Practical Magic, had an awesome house set as well. 🏠 Message In A Bottle, from a Nicholas Sparks book, has an adorable, nautical set design too. I spend a lot of time looking at sets in movies. Meg Ryan’s tiny NY apartment In You’ve Got Mail is a dream in chintz and shabby chic. I love looking in other people’s homes.
    I cannot wait to follow your next adventures, Susan. ⚓ Love you.💖

  24. Kathy from Holland, MI says:

    I can just imagine how you will miss that sweet little Jack’s face! I mean , Petey is cute, but he’s not furry! That is always a difficult part of traveling. Looking forward to your wonderful photographs.

  25. Sharon Maier says:

    Your schedule is truly exhausting! Can’t wait to follow along with you in England because you make it so real — just like being there. Thank you for all you do…it’s so appreciated for those of us who are unable to travel any more…
    Sharon in Houston

  26. Bonnie says:

    You will LOVE the Queen Victoria! We went on a Mediterranean
    cruise several years ago and had a great time aboard the
    QueenVictoria. Hopefully the weather will be pleasant
    for you to have lunch in the courtyard. That was one of the
    highlights aboard the ship.
    Wishing y’all a great time.

    Bonnie

    • sbranch says:

      Did they open the roof for you Bonnie? We’re crossing down south, so perhaps it will get warm enough!

      • Bonnie says:

        As nearly as I recall, the courtyard did not have a roof and was
        just open when weather permitted.

        • sbranch says:

          I heard they had a roof that rolls back when the weather is nice . . . not sure if it was the Courtyard, but I thought so. Soon to find out!

  27. JoAnn Logan says:

    I so loved following you on-line your first trip and hope the computers hold out and send back everything you tell them to this time! About to make tea in my “In Love with Nature”mug as very windy and cold here in central Okla – as usual. I look forward to the Posey embroidery collection! Just what I love to sew – thank you.

    • sbranch says:

      Me too, it’s always our biggest challenge, phone and computers. But it seems like things get better every time we go, so we’ll see what happens with ships in the middle of the ocean, and stone cottages in the English countryside! Thank you JoAnn!

  28. Lorraine says:

    It’s always such a pleasant surprise to discover you added a blog post before I receive the email. It’s an overcast day, but it’s above freezing (barely), so I sat down with my hot tea (in my Winter mug), and had a short respite from all that’s going on in the world. Thanks so much. I read a lovely comment above and I will echo her sentiment. I understand you have a million and one things to finish before you leave, but I love the idea of a royal wedding mug too. Just putting it out there.

    I’ll be with you on the trip in spirit, and I’m really looking forward to it. We’re planning to go to Ireland this fall, but it might be bumped back until spring 2019. Regardless, please take extra special travel notes to help us plan.

    Congratulations to Lynn and Abbie. Enjoy your new treasures.

    • sbranch says:

      Don’t worry, I will, my diary will come everywhere with me, so I can write it in real time. Then you will be able to smell the flowers and the sea! xoxo

      • Lorraine says:

        I just took a little time and read some more of the other comment. Oh my… Talk about feeling the LOVE and kindred spirits. You have a wonderful group of girlfriends out there. It’s so nice to feel so much love, positive energy, and contentment – it’s positively addictive and definitely what the world needs more of! Thanks everyone for sharing your love.

  29. Ann Donaldson says:

    Greer Garson is my all-time FAV actress! My favorite old movie–actually, my favorite any time movie–is Random Harvest. A totally warm, albeit perhaps unimaginable–love story. All good stories have a happy ending. It’s so fun to share so many wonderful things; there are lots of them left. Thanks for always bringing them to our attention!

  30. Sheryl Kirk says:

    Dear Friend,
    Safe travels to you and Joe. I’m glad I can come along.

    Also, I think the little pillows are beautiful.

    Love n Hugs,
    Sheryl

  31. Nele from Michigan says:

    I truly do not know how you keep up.. blog, Willard, mugs, calendars, answering emails… I am one soul among many that counts you among my blessings. You always make me pause in the hustle and bustle to look around me and appreciate the beauty of our world.. Going on an Atlantic crossing is on my bucket list… someday.. :-). Thrilled to be going along with you!!
    Nan

  32. Carol in FLemington says:

    What a blog! I did read Willard thru a link on FaceBook or was it Twitter….so much social media I can’t keep track of where I’ve been. Congrats to the winners, wish it was me but maybe next time. The Queen Victoria looks like such a neat ship. Will we get to see it leave NYC harbor? And, so cool going to SC first before the ocean voyage. I’m so excited for you and Joe and Petey.

    • sbranch says:

      We leave from Florida this time, and so far I haven’t be able to locate the harbor or a camera that shows it! Thank you Carol, I LOVE having everyone along for the ride!

      • Carol in FLemington says:

        I will ask my IT hubby to research it and see if he can find a real time cam shot of either harbor. He’s good at those kinds of thing. It sounds like a unique trip all around.

        • sbranch says:

          OH Thank you!!! I tried so hard to find it, I’d love to be able to give out a link for it! Thank your husband for me too! (Even if he can’t find it!)

  33. Diane Skinner says:

    I love reading your blogs and seeing all of your photos and little watercolored additions
    And am now getting your Willard’s ! So cheerful and interesting! I can’t wait to hear about your huge trip and know about your adventures in Ireland! It must be heavenly to be contemplating such a wonderful journey. Happy trails to you and Joe!

  34. Dawn says:

    What a fun blog post… the drum roll of the drawing, the adorable bookmark, the movie tip, the stitchery kits, the reminder to have your camera ready, and (my favorite part) the artwork on Silence, poetry with your paintbrush.

  35. Mary/Indiana says:

    Only one more month? You lucky Girl! Glad to be tagging along living vicariously
    through your a Blog! I will follow you…Follow you wherever you will go, there isn’t an ocean too deep…..Lol

  36. kathiellen says:

    Dear Susan,
    I am happy for the winners of your give away!…also happy for all of the girlfriends and myself! We are winners every time we read your books, posts, Willard’s and enjoy all of your beautiful talent and trips that you so lovingly share with us! I hope that You, Joe and all the Girlfriends have a wonderful time in South Carolina! I love the Valentine bookmark!…Thank you! I can hardly wait until your Castle Cottage embroidery kit is available! It is adorable! Will you ever be selling the Kitty Love bead again? I missed it when it was for sale and I would dearly love to buy one! I was so happy that you brought back some of the beads that sold out…I love them all!! Have a wonderful Valentine’s Day!!! ❤️

    • sbranch says:

      Tell sheri@162.240.10.175/~susanbs3/susanbranch/ that you’re interested in the Kitty Love charm … she keeps track, and when we get a few requests, we may be able to do it. Like the cup manufacturers, they also require a “minimum order” of quite a lot of them so we need to make sure there’s a call for them. Thank you Kathiellen!

  37. Betsy says:

    Congrats to both the winners! I love that movie Susan, it’s one of my favorites. The day after we watched it we went to see Dunkirk. Have you seen it yet? It’s wonderful what can happen when people pull together. We sure could use more of that right about now. Have a lovely weekend. xoxoxoxo

      I can’t see the movie Dunkirk. It would be too much for me. I can’t tell the difference between a movie and real life, I don’t see makeup or special effects! I’d never be able to sleep again. The story, the history, however, is SO BEAUTIFUL and amazing and touching, a world of heroes.

  38. Leigh DeJarnatt says:

    When I read your blog, I fine myself wanting to ‘like’ or ‘love’ everything you post! You’re writings and pictures make me feel happy!! And I have your calendar cheering me every day 🙂

  39. Sandra Garber says:

    Loved this as much as always. So peaceful. I am so sorry that I will be leaving S.C. And heading back to Virginia at the end of February. I would love to come to Barnes and Nobles and meet you. I keep hoping you will one day be close to my area.

  40. Amy says:

    Ooooooh Susan! We are soulmates! I love old movies, too, and how delightful cozy they were decorated in those days! I fashion my house in much the same way.—-lace & Priscilla curtains, rose floral prints on my furniture, bouquets of flowers, warm fireplaces, lots of teacups and teapots! I could go on and on! I love all your books and adventures and your descriptive writing puts me right in its pages! Love you sooooo much! I also adore England and I feel like I lived there in another lifetime. Have a blast on your next adventure and, oh YES, a royal wedding cup would be ever so delightful! Xxxooo……

  41. Sandy Garvey says:

    I love getting your email updates. I’m so excited to “travel” with you on your ocean voyage. Your calendars are delightful. Hope you get everything done before you leave. Have a super great trip. 💓Happy Valentine’s Day!

  42. Kathy says:

    Thanks so much, Susan. You always lift my spirits!

    Kathy

  43. Sally Roth says:

    Yes, please design a Royal Wedding cup. I can just imagine how beautiful you’ll make it!
    How is it that you and I love all the same things. I so enjoy your posts because they remind me and give me extra joy!
    Thank you and bon voyage.

  44. Kitty DeMento says:

    Dear Susan:
    My order arrived and I must tell you, the painted cups are even MORE beautiful in person!!!!
    Good Heavens they are amazing. A nice substantial size.
    I’m about to begin your third book. I can’t wait!
    My daughter is now obsessed with you and is reading your first two books and using your cookbooks.
    Do you have any idea how much sunshine you spread?
    Thank you for everything!!!
    Kitty💖💖💖

    • sbranch says:

      Kitty, you do a pretty good job of spreading sunshine yourself. Hugs to both you and your daughter. Thank you about the cups. Thank you for everything! xoxo

  45. Rosalind Murray says:

    Mrs. Miniver is such a classic movie. I have a daughter heading to college next year, and I want to watch it with her before she goes. Times were obviously difficult, but folks seemed to hold themselves to a higher denominator.

    • sbranch says:

      Dignity. And the culture was more about the things money can’t buy, honor, inner peace, manners, respect.

  46. Memarge says:

    I know how busy you are BUT will we have another letter before you and Joe go on your journey? Everything about your blog is stunning and fun. One of these days I hope to win something pretty from a giveaway. 🙂 Have an enjoyable visit to England and Scotland!

  47. Ann Woleben says:

    I love the old movies as well and the charm of the houses, spacious and inviting.
    I am retiring in June after 42 years in the classroom/library! My husband asked where I would like to go for a special trip. My answer – Martha’s Vineyard! I can hardly wait to tour the area and perchance, to walk by your lovely home. Safe travels for you and Joe~

    • sbranch says:

      Good for you Ann! Congratulations on your retirement! You’ll love the Island, I’m sure you know that. Lovely to have the freedom to pick up and go!

  48. Vickie in Olympia says:

    We use curtains in the doorway for when we use the fireplace. It keeps the thermostat in the hall from turning the heat off in the rest of the house😊 I thought I was being so clever until I spotted them in my favorite old movies. The subconscious is a wonderful thing. So looking forward to our trip. You may need to leave a scarf or two at home, I haven’t been doing well on the pretrip diet and might not fit into the same corner of the suitcase. 😉

    • sbranch says:

      We stayed in a cottage in England that had a heavy velvet curtain hanging inside in front of the door to the yard. Pulled it every night and it kept us cozy! There will be room for everyone!! xoxo

  49. Gayle Casias says:

    Susan, I too love old houses. We live in a house built before 1870. I love old cherry or Mahogany furniture as well.
    I love your house and the setting is beautiful.
    Have a safe journey to England and Ireland.
    Gayle

    • sbranch says:

      Thank you Gayle! Our houses were probably born together, sisters of the ages ~ ours remembers her opening day in 1849.

  50. Rosemary Badders says:

    Susan, I don’t always leave a comment, but I just read your blog and saw that you are working with “Posy” needlework. I have bought some of her kits in Williamsburg, Va of silhouettes of some of the Presidents (George Washington ,John and Abigal Adams). I wanted Abraham Lincoln to do for my husband for his Lincoln collection but couldn’t find it. I called her and she was so sweet. She sent me the pattern for Lincoln and Martha Washington too, no charge! I just had John and Abigail framed and Lincoln made into a “portrait easel”. I’m going to take a picture with my granddaughter’s polaroid camera to send to her. I will be excited to see all your kits when they come out.

  51. Jan Johnson says:

    Those new mugs are so beautiful. I am wrestling mightily with myself over that thatch roof cottage mug! No room for extras right now, but that is the biggest temptation I’ve had in a long time LOL! You need to do whole sets of dishes – plates and bowls. Those mugs are just so appealing. I would love to eat off your pretty watercolors every night. Oh and more tins! That stacked teacup tin is just wonderful. We love putting up your calendar every year and enjoying the art all year long.

    Your blog is just a happy place to come to! It’s like you made it just for me – an anglophile, art lover, quote lover, cat lover, old house lover, old movie lover, old music lover, old dishes lover, flower lover, recipe lover. Thank you for all the wonderful blog posts to get lost in in this trying time.

    • sbranch says:

      Kindred spirits! The meaning of contentment to most of us, perhaps with little particular additions, like who knows, motorcycle rides, horse-nose rubbing, ocean canoeing! xoxo

  52. Margaret Harke says:

    Thank you so much for sharing your life with us all. It is inspiring and encouraging. Dreams do come true! Looking forward your sharing your trip.

  53. Laura in Atlanta says:

    Susan, first time commenter here. So excited that my husband and I have just finished building a trip around the picnic! And we are going to an event at Highclere Castle on May 17th, AND we are going to Devizes to visit graves because my husband’s ancestors are from there, believe it or not. Looking forward to meeting you and all the other girlfriends at the picnic. Wishing you safe travels.

  54. Noelle Sweeney says:

    Hello Sue: Congrats to the lucky winners and lovely post as usual. An email from you always makes my day so special,always makes me feel good and special and happy, you truly have a gift! Thanks so so much. Enjoy your trip, sounds amazing.. can’t wait to follow along.. Noelle

  55. Barbara (Farm Girl) says:

    Leather fire buckets, were a ubiquitous part of urban life in 1900’s.

    “In many communities they would be required,” says Winkle. “You would keep them in your front hall and throw them out into the street for people to use in the event of a fire. They were painted with names and addresses. When the fire is over, they all get taken to a church or other central place and people would pick them up.”

    Explains the bucket in the front hall of the movie. Congratulations Abbie and Lynn. Have a wonderful, safe journey Susan and Joe!!

    • sbranch says:

      We have an old wooden bucket, painted red, with black lettering that says FIRE on it … hanging from the rafters in our pantry. Can you imagine, a bucket of water to put out a fire? Yikes! Thank you Barbara!

  56. Debby Suovanen says:

    Congrats to the recipients of your giveaways! So excited for them. And I’m looking forward to Mrs. Miniver. I love the “classic” movies, but I haven’t seen that one. The details in the houses are so wonderful! Have a great trip and get lots of rest. We’re all ready for a new book! (Hint, hint)

  57. Geri says:

    I have always wanted to cross the Atlantic and am looking forward to reading about your travels. Have a great trip!

    • sbranch says:

      Fingers are crossed for good computer connection. They do have wifi, but it can be very slow, and suddenly all your work can go missing. But I manage to eek out a little bit. I think this time I will try for less photos, but more often!

  58. Debbie Dority says:

    Congratulations to the winners! Love that Vanna wears a swim cap (wink wink) reminds me of mine long ago, lovely aqua with white and yellow flowers. The pouring snow was so pretty, but like I’ve shared before, when snow/sleet/ice happens in Arkansas we all lose our minds and storm the stores for bread, milk and toilet paper. We are kooky that way. Can’t believe it’s almost time for your trip, thank you to you and your permanent Boyfriend for taking us along! My sweet daddy always called the happy feelings and excitement just before a trip being “journey proud.” Travel safe!

  59. Patricia Edde says:

    Susan, I am in love with Petey, does he by any chance have a brother?
    I am a fan of so many of the 1940’s movies, everything looks so elegant in black and white (I am of an age where our senior high pictures were in black and white and I think we looked pretty cool, flip hairstyles and all). One of my favorite films is “The Ghost and Mrs. Muir” with Rex Harrison and Gene Tierney. The cottage is beyond lovely and cozy and when he calls her Lu-Chee-ah (forgive my phonetic spelling but the pronunciation is what makes it soooooo divine) and m’dear I go all googley eyed. I loved the chintz and pine furniture so much that I have done my home in it. I think I lived in an English cottage in a past life – if I had lots of money, I would live there in a minute.
    I loved the picture of the sun filtering in through your window onto the hutch you have, so beautiful. I have always said that I don’t care what the weather is like as long as there is sunshine – and with the temps below 0 with the wind chill yesterday but the sun out that held true, although I did wish that I had worn socks with my shoes because my feet were mini icebergs until the next morning. Why didn’t I wear socks you ask, I blame it on a temporary brain freeze leading to a rapid drop of IQ.
    I wish you and Joe a cork popping von boyage, a safe journey and the time of your lives during your stay and Jack lots of fresh fish and rubber bands. I can’t wait for the shares. Thanks for everything Susan.

    • sbranch says:

      Thank you so much Patricia! And yes, I think there are lots and lots of Petey’s brothers out there! I’ve seen some in antique stores, but we have our boy, so we are set! Wear your socks!!!

  60. Barbara from northern California says:

    Congratulations to the very lucky winners!

    A Royal Wedding cup – now that is a supercalifragilisticexpealidocious idea!

    Mrs. Miniver is excellent. I had a little Greer Garson film festival all for myself early last year. Read one of her bios, too. She was a strong and enterprising woman.

  61. Lorna S. says:

    Hi Susan,
    Thank you for such a warm and lovely note today. It is my birthday and you added to the celebration. I’m planning on coming with you and Joe for the next chapter from across the “pond.” I’ve started to gather my own watercolors and sketchbook/journal for the trip too. I’ve got the maps and will be following along and making quick sketches from the photos you share – all for my own pleasure, as I no longer travel far from home.
    I’ve pulled out my Mrs. Miniver movie and will watch it this evening and love every minute of it. Walter Pigeon was a dear friend of my Grandfather when they were boys together in North Sydney, Nova Scotia. He was a lovely man and just as gracious in real life too. He took a day off of filming to spend it with my grandfather when they were both in the same place at the same time. And when he was called back for a scene he told them he couldn’t as he was with a “very fine and important gentleman” and he knew “the director would rather he take the time away from make believe than to ignore someone so valued in real life.”
    I think the Royal Wedding cup would be a charming addition, and am looking forward to the Castle Cottage Kit.
    Be well, stay warm and healthy and enjoy the packing and anticipation.
    Lorna

    • sbranch says:

      HAPPY BIRTHDAY LORNA! Lovely story about your Grandfather and Walter Pigeon. I love him so much it’s wonderful to hear he was as warm in real life as he was on the screen. So happy you’re coming along, love how you’re getting ready!

  62. Heather says:

    Bon voyage, Susan! Those of us staying Stateside will be cheering you on from afar, and eagerly anticipating your updates. Have you seen “The Ghost and Mrs. Muir”? Another romantic old favorite with a fabulous house. Sigh. Enjoy every minute of your time in England!

  63. Ruth Winkler says:

    Dear Susan,
    Bon Voyage. I can hardly wait to board with you both, via your blog.
    I think Mrs. Miniver is a wonderful movie and have watched it many times. I get all teary eyed with the special scenes with the station master/gardener of roses. How precious is that.
    And thanks to all for the list of movies which I shall pursue. I also recommend Random Harvest, with the dream cottage in the country.

  64. Jane Franks says:

    Utterly charming, Susan! Congratulations to the winners! And getting excited about your trip. How wonderful you get to make a stop in SC before sailing away; giving some of the girlfriends down there an opportunity to meet you! I’ll be taking breaks to watch you on your journey. So much going on here! Finally got my new auto insurance finalized; most of the first of the year financial stuff done; now a trip to the computer shop to untangle “something” keeping me from getting into my Word processing program and a few others! Thankfully I have a very reliable group of wonderful people who will get my poor sick computer up and running again. Thankful I at least have email and can get online. Then. . . back to the creative life and our book! The first one is done!! Should be back at the drawing board in a week! Can’t wait!! Very much looking forward to the England cup! They are all just amazing. Enjoying MV and Winter very much! Thank you again for all you do to help make our lives enchanting and bright. Jane xo

    • sbranch says:

      Oh Jane, thank you back. Always love to hear from you . . . you’re keeping it all going! Love the check-off list, and getting back to the creative life. I have to do that too, take time-outs for real life! Always a relief to get things done, and then back to the paintbrush and the writing!

  65. Penny says:

    Love everything you share with us Susan ! The embroidery pillows to complete are adorable! Love the cups your creating ❤️. You are such an inspiration always. 😘 Penny

  66. Bobbie Calgaro says:

    Looking so forward to your trip. It is so much fun to be an armchair traveler with you. It is such a joy to see things through your eyes and to see the England most people don’t see. Have a wonderful trip.

  67. Charlene Scholey says:

    Susan, you make my day when I open my email and find Blog from you. Wonderful,wonderful. Your excitement is fun cause it makes it seem like we really are going along in person. I love Charleston so much and it’s a grand place.There is a beautiful old church there where the sea captain who wrote Amazing Grace worshiped, and then went back to England and composed the hymn. We will keep you and Joe in our prayers while you are away. Travel safely.
    I love you❤️💕💖

  68. Shelley B. says:

    I would love to see a Royal Wedding Cup, Susan! Looking forward to a virtual vacation to England with you and Joe! Especially looking forward to pictures of your cruise! Enjoy and Thank you taking us along!!!

  69. VickeyB says:

    Isn’t it the truth about needing a camera IMMEDIATELY to hand when you have pets?!

    When my little cat, Frankie, is doing something too cute to stand, I will often run for the camera. But, of course, he is on to me, so as soon as I get back with the camera, he is all serious dignity again. So frustrating!

    I love “Mrs. Miniver;” but, you must admit, the scenes about the Mrs.Miniver rose are pretty heart-rending.

    Can’t wait to follow along with your adventures as you sail away to England. Thanks for these wonderful posts. I’m sure you know how much all your Girlfriends look forward to them!

    • sbranch says:

      Sometimes Jack does something and BOTH of the cameras are on the opposite side of the house. Drives me crazy! Need a phone pocket on my work clothes! Did you notice how Downton Abbey totally lifted the Mrs. Miniver Rose scenes, the entire thing, from the movie? I didn’t like it! They forgot to do a nod to the movie. The little stationmaster Mr. Ballard, what an adorable character. Love Henry Travers, he can make me cry by just looking sweet! And Mrs. Belden, oh the humanity, all there in that wonderful movie!

      • VickeyB says:

        Oh–I did not recall that scene from Downton until you mentioned it. Naughty Julian Fellowes not to credit the original!

        • sbranch says:

          Yup, because I loved Downton so much, AND Julian, it put a little nip in it. It was SUCH a wonderful scene from Mrs. Miniver, iconic, never to be done again.

  70. Gill Smith says:

    Congratulations to the lucky winners!! How wonderful for you both.
    Ahhh Mrs Miniver, may just curl up and watch this again, on this cold Sunday here in Devon.
    Susan……remember to breathe…….ha ha

  71. Kelly from Walnut Creek, California says:

    Curtains in the entryway to rooms…you reminded me of the delightful scene in ‘Young People’ starring Shirley Temple. She uses the curtains in the entryway separating the entryway from the living room to break into song and dance. Have you seen it, Susan?
    And by the by, I love ‘Mrs. Miniver’. One of my favorites. Will settle in with a proper cup of tea and enjoy the movie over this weekend. Thanks for the reminder.

    Love the images of your new mugs, just may have to order another one from this new collection. Your mugs are truly rivaling my Emma Bridgewater collection! Love them.

    I hope you and Joe are well. Can’t wait to set sail with you in a few weeks. Thanks for taking all of us along with you.

    Sending all positive thoughts and best wishes,

    Kelly ❄️🌷🌻❄️

    • sbranch says:

      Thank you Kelly! Yes, I saw Young People, I’ve seen everything she was ever in! I’m a Shirley Temple kind of gal!

      • Kelly from Walnut Creek, California says:

        I had the opportunity of meeting Shirley Temple Black in Palo Alto, Ca. while she was shopping with her daughter at the Stanford Shopping Center. My father and I circled around the department store floor before getting nerve up enough to ask for an autograph. She was so kind and lovely generously giving us an autograph and wishing us a nice day. Have never forgotten that moment. It was very special.🌷

        Love,

        Kelly

  72. Cindy Huk says:

    What does one do when they wake up at 3AM? Check your blog, of course! Love the parting pic of your boy, so sweet – but with that gleam of mischief in those eyes. Thanks for your continued words of tranquility all these years.

  73. I love the film Mrs Miniver. Have done so for all my life. My husband was born just before the War started. His dad went off to fight and his mum moved them out of the East End of London to his grandparents in the countryside of Harold Hill (which is now a London Borrough). He remembers an incendiary bomb falling into the attic of his grandfather’s house and them having to put it out so that would be the need for hoses and buckets. (The Germans used to dump any bombs they hadn’t already dropped on London over the countryside as they made their way back to Germany.) He was seven before he saw his father. He remembers the sounds of the bombs falling in the distance, and he had a Mickey Mouse gas mask and there was a bomb shelter in the garden. His mom used to come to school and pick him up to bring him home when the air raid sirens would go off. Scary times I would think, but it was just normal for him at that time.

    In our house we still have the lintel on the ceiling between the dining area and lounge area where a curtain would have been hung. I think in the days before central heating these were a necessity to hold the heat in a room. I think they hold a certain charm. Looking forward to the picnic in May! Fingers crossed I will get to this one! Tis only a few hours away. xoxo

    • sbranch says:

      Thank you for those memories Marie. So touching. I hope you can make it to the picnic, would love to meet you in person! If you do, be sure to say “Marie from Chester” so I will know, OHHH, THAT Marie! xoxo

  74. Martha says:

    Can’t wait for the Castle Cottage Kits! Also can’t wait for the 2019 calendar. Love all of your calendars.

  75. Deb in Wales says:

    Good Morning Susan!

    I’m so sorry, I missed the last entry, Mum was in hospital very far from home and it took all my time and energy for that time.

    Mrs Miniver is one of my all time favourites, dare I say for over 50 years? I was a child when I first saw it and was drawn in to the story in a very deep way ~ maybe because the Second World War was still fresh in the memories of my parents and Grandmother, and I picked up on things in a way a child absorbs like a little sponge. Even then, I cried buckets!

    Speaking of buckets ~ the hose and buckets are on the floor by the stairs to help quickly extinguish any fires that would happen if the house was hit by a bomb. That was a fact of life back in those days, and everyone kept themselves as prepared as they possibly could. It’s actually a great touch of authenticity to the timeline on the part of the director. I don’t think any of us who didn’t live through WWII first hand can even begin to think what it was like. The stories my forebears have told, and my two cousins who lied about their ages to get into the Land Army!

    Always, always carry a camera! Even when out shopping I take a small one, you never know what you will see.

    ~~~Waving~~~from Across the Pond~~~Deb in Wales xoxo
    • sbranch says:
      I love learning about what went on there, books, movies, old videos ~ loved The Darkest Hour. Everyone was so brave, living like that, and never giving up, and everyone involved. I also have an uncle who lied about his age to join the Navy and go to war. Waving back Deb, I’m glad to think that your mom is back home, hope that’s the case. xoxo
      • Deb in Wales says:
        Thank you, Susan. Yes, she was home just four days later, thankfully. It’s amazing how things have improved, but also glad that she was out of there quickly with all these nasty winter viruses doing the rounds.
        Dunkirk Spirit! That’s what held us together during those dark days of two world wars. I’ll put up a photo on Twitter of my Nanna, aged barely 18 and her “baby” brother Jim, who lied about his age, in his uniform ready to go to the trenches of WWI. He looks barely out of diapers! Seriously. The other side of that story is that my Dacu was furious that he was too old to go and fight for King and Country during WWII, so he joined the Home Guard. Why are so many men just so crazy to go off to war? What puzzles me is what a gentle and peaceful man my Dacu was, would never hurt anyone or anything, but ready to go and fight “the Hun” for King and country, just like that. Ours not to reason why.
        • sbranch says:
          I think they didn’t really know what war was in those days (you can see I go right to the reasoning why!). Now we do know, we have all the films to show it, and hopefully we will keep ourselves from tottering into such destruction based on the whims of massively stupid men. If they want to fight, they should go get in the ring together and leave the rest of us out of it. As you can see, I really have a thing against war! The world HAD to go against Hitler, absolutely, wish we could read the future and do something about people like him before it’s too late, before they get so powerful the entire world is affected. Prayers for the beautiful earth of ours. xoxo
          • Deb in Wales says:
            I understand, at one time, long ago, disputes were settled over games of chess and/or backgammon. The kings and princes ‘fought’ in this way, and the outcome abided by.
            I abhor war, but agree that we have to stand up against people such as Hitler.
            We must also remember that, as history tells us, both World Wars were going to be over by Christmas ~ but no one said which Christmas!
            This whole ‘stiff upper lip’ and not speaking of the horrors witnessed in earlier wars, such as the Crimea, or Napoleonic wars, protected the innocent children {and men} who willingly stepped forward into the unforseen horrors of the two World Wars.
            Time to paint something beautiful, I think. I’m off to my kitchen to bake a cake and practice the pancakes for Shrove Tuesday, which loometh!
          • sbranch says:
            Not so sure the silence “protected” them . . . I think my high school friends who fought in Viet Nam were shocked to their core when they experienced the realness of war. At least they came home, but damaged for life, joy buttons all gone. Happy pancakes and Shrove Tuesday dear Deb.
  76. Marie says:
    Mrs Miniver is one of my very favourite movies. I think that some of your other girflriends already mentioned that the buckets are for fire fighting, in the event of an incendiary bomb. The long-handled set-up is a stirrup pump, which is a hand operated pump with a footrest. Ah, those interiors are wonderful – I’ve dreamed of having a long case clock – one day…
  77. rhea says:
    Good morning Susan;
    Another wonderful gesture…………the giveaways. So fun and sweet. Congrats to the winners! Of course your cup idea would be perfect and would fly off the shelves in a blink of an eye. You could do it after your trip too so you don’t overwhelm yourself with too many deadlines. Plus you’d be all inspired from the trip! I can’t believe how long you guys are going for this time. How exciting and brave!! I always plan these long adventures ( in my head ) but know from experience that I get homesick after week #2 which is ridiculous but so true. Not my hubby. He can go go go just happy as a clam and he’s 11 yrs older than me! My goal is to work up to it slowly and hope for the best, but no promises 🙂 Im making your chicken enchiladas today for the Super Bowl. Yum. The weather is perfect for the game, food & fire with Marleygirl beside me. Apparently its going to stay this way for 6 more weeks according to the groundhog even though it was snowing when he saw his shadow. Im thinking his shadow was caused by all of the flashing bulbs from the photographers! At least thats what I keep telling myself as I select my seeds to order this week from my catalog. So ready to get my hands in some dirt and not have to do that scootchy walk in the ice anymore!! Enjoy your day with your hubby and kitty.
    • sbranch says:
      I have to design three months ahead of when I want the them to come out, because that’s how long it takes to make and ship them to the Studio! I’d like that cup to come out as close to the wedding as possible while we’re all still celebrating and basking in the glow, which is the end of May … so if the summer cups come to us in early June, I need to design them now. Planning is my middle name! I get homesick too Rhea, I know just what you mean. But I soldier on, and then the memories keep me for a very long time. Have a wonderful day!
  78. Margie says:
    Thank you for the moon bookmark! I can never remember and I spend a lot of time in the moonlight. Curtains in the entry, a kitty on the hardwood, what more could you ask for? A ship at sea? Thinking of you as always after all these years.
  79. Sarah L. says:
    So excited for Joe and you on the upcoming trip. My hubby and I will be in Charleston, SC for a little vacation but will miss your book talk by one week. Darn! I’m just finishing your Martha Vineyard book and don’t want it to end. Keep the books coming! Thanks for sharing your talents with all of us.
  80. Jane says:
    Oh, darling Susan – Just sipping on my morning coffee, fire blazing, candle burning and discovered your recent post. It’s like the olden days! Sweet thoughts (no politics), inspiring, cheery, hopeful and heartwarming. Here’s a fun idea for all the Valentine girls. I’m in a quilt group at our church. We meet each week and send off simple, tied quilts all over the world through Lutheran World Relief. I am 68 years old and one of the youngest. Most of these women (20 or so) are in their 80’s and some in the 90’s. Some of our members must move off of our charming island to be in assisted care facilities as our little town can’t accommodate them. So, two have moved this year and we are doing a Valentine explosion in their mailboxes! Each one of the group will send an individual greeting on the same day and our friends will open their boxes to pink and red envelopes with love and greetings from each of us. And, your bookmark will be enclosed in each of mine! Thank you for sharing! I love you, dear friend! Xoxo. Jane from the Train
    Lovely blog. My husband watched The Bishop’s Wife with me at Christmas, we both loved it. Now I will have to look for Mrs. Minerva. The house is wonderful from your photos. You are a clever girl with all the things you do and your blog. You cannot imagine the warm fuzzies you send!
    have a glorious trip….your inspiration is alive and well….3 of us are planning our Scotland-Ireland spring trip…..I always seek hidden gems to visit – found Dr. Neil’s Garden, in Edinburgh….drneilsgarden.co.uk/…….staying at B and B’s who serve porridge for breakfast, and who own small furry dogs and cats to wonder the hallways….Twice as Nice, a vintage shop in Galway is on the list….the Writer’s Museum in Dublin…….spread peace and joy on your journeys to our brothers and sisters across the pond…..you are our ambassador of color, and warmth, and love for humanity…..
    Hi Susan!
    My daughter cat sat in a gorgeous home overlooking a lake and they had curtains at every doorway. It felt so dramatic – like we were in a movie. I didn’t realize that was done long ago. Thanks for the new knowledge.
    I dream of taking a ship to England. My husband says that we will one day soon. So I visualized myself sitting at that table overlooking the ocean. Thank you!
      I think the more fabric you can introduce to a room, the cozier it becomes! Anyway, the old movies make it look like that!
    I love your blogs.
    Hi Susan, Congratulations to you lucky (blessed) winners! Thank you sweet Sue for taking us along again on yet another sail across the pond! Going to try real hard to come down from my blue ridge mtn home to Charleston to wave you off! Love the Jan 2019 page!
    Good morning from San Diego Susan. I just have to say that I love your posts, but just as much love reading all the wonderful comments from the girlfriends. They are so kind and smart and such kindred spirits. I know you are hard at work before you go, and that you will rest well on the trip over. I have never seen Mrs. Miniver, but I think I shall try to find it and watch it. I have been watching the crown and loving it. Safe travels to you and Joe. I know you will miss Jack, but that steadfast kitty will be holding down the home front in your absence. Bon Voyage.
  90. Congrats to the winners! We ALL win with your posts though.
    I think I have a bit of winter time blues, lack of sunshine or something, so your words and pictures, you viewpoint, is good medicine for me.
    Have loved Mrs Miniver for 30 years, since TCM began, anyway. It’s great to share it with you and all the girlfriends; I love the comments and getting new info on books and places to see.
    Love it all, Thanks!
    Congrats to the winners! Wedding cups, hooray! Saving like crazy for the Jack and library books cup. Matches me completely with my 18 year old tuxedo cat Zoe! May try those enbroidery kits, so cute. Calender looks great. I love turning the page on my calender to the next month❤️
  92. Tisa says:
    Always such a cheerful sight to see your blog email in my inbox 🙂 Happy Sunday….and happy painting! ♥♥♥
  93. Debby says:
    I love to read your postings! It is pouring snow right outside my window this morning. I am curled up next to the fireplace and it feels like all is right in my little corner of the world. I have hot cocoa and Susan Branch books.
    I can hardly wait for “our” next adventure!!
  94. Barbara Anne says:
    Hi! Love this blog, your happy ideas and lovely photos. Oh, I love Mrs. Miniver, too. What an amazing movie and that house … bliss.
    I just read someone’s blog who mentioned what she called “the 2nd best pub” that’s called The Hatch, located in Sussex, in the tiny village of Coleman’s Hatch in the middle of Ashdown Forest. You can get there on the A22 using a turn-off about halfway between Uckfield and East Grinstead. Wouldn’t want y’all to miss this highly recommended place if you’re in the neighborhood!
    Hugs!
  95. Sue says:
    Your post was a delight to view and read! The teacup embroidery sets my little heart aflutter!
  96. Jana says:
    What a lovely way to open the day: open a Susan Branch blog post!
    It is gray and overcast here today (eastern Tennessee) and I am in the mood for a kind-hearted movie and a pot of tea.
    How thrilling to be preparing for a long trip away in a beloved place. When I’m getting ready for any trip, I always remind myself, “I have all the time I need to accomplish everything that’s important to me.” And a big exhale!
    May you and Joe have safe travels, hear kind words, and receive good service wherever you go! The faeries are paving the way!
      We have two weeks on the boat to acclimate ourselves from full bore ahead, to dead stop. Going to be interesting! Thank you Dear, for the good wishes. xoxo
  97. Lynette Strohbach says:
    Bon Voyage Susan!! I hope you have a wonderful and safe trip, and don’t forget to wear your seasickness bracelet before you leave! I am hoping for another book about this trip, I have to keep re-reading your books, I can’t put them down! Say hi to Castle Cottage for me, cause I too am a painter and writer (amateur) and love Beatrix Potter!!
  98. Hi Susan! Congrats to the winners!!! And thank you so much for the Valentine’s Day bookmark! You are the BEST! I cannot wait till we all get to go on your dream trip with you! HUGS and best wishes! Oh, and I have not seen Mrs Miniver – I am going to look it up and watch it while the rest of my family watches the Super Bowl today!!!!!
  99. LINDA LORENZ says:
    Dear Susan,
    Love Mrs Miniver! My Mom and I watch old movies on TCM almost every night, Mom with her hot tea and me with my hot chocolate! That is till SPRING!
    BRRR! So cold here in Ohio! Darn that groundhog!!
    Have a great trip, and take lots of photos!!! Luv, Linda L
    Susan, I too have loved Mrs. Miniver and have watched it too many times to count. I could not watch “Dunkirk” either. War is so horrible; I wish we could live without the threat of tyrannical leaders who think they need to control the world and don’t care how much they destroy or how many they kill to do it.
    I’m not always able to read your blogs or Willard when they come out, so I save them until I have some time to enjoy them and like another woman, sometimes that is at 2 or 3 in the morning on the nights when I have trouble getting to sleep because of too much overload.
    I look forward to “going along” with you on your voyage to England again and have so enjoyed the last 3 books. But moist of all, I am so grateful for your little book, Gratitude and have to order more copies to give as gifts. I actually realized that I needed one more to give to a special person in my life and ended up sending my new copy as a gift to them, so now I need another copy too. Hope they are still available when I go to order them today.
    Funny, I have Susan Allen Toth’s book “My Love Affair with England” on the top of the pile of my books to be read—have glanced through it and know I will love
    it. I bought a used copy of it in a sweet little used book store 2 years ago while in Eastham and Orleans for a Friends of Gladys Taber Reunion and finally I will be able to read all of it just before you leave for England and delight us with all of your pictures of journey on the Queen Victoria and the country side and your wonderful writing that makes us feel we are right there with you. The paperback I have was published in 1994 (paperback edition) by Ballantine Books, New York. Now off to buy more of your books and other items!
    Loved listening to Bing Crosby while reading the blog and the comments!
    Safe and happy travels to you and Joe!
    Carol Y.
      Your first paragraph, so perfectly said. One guy is capable of so much destruction, and there we all are, no matter what country, moms and dads, gardeners and readers, subject to their lunatic whims. Thank you so much Carol, love having you here! xoxo
