A SURPRISE

I promised you “a surprise” in my last post (about a hundred years ago, oh my goodness, I’m so late)! MUSICA (nice old Frank)🎶 I don’t usually start things off with a photo of me, but I had to make an exception to add oomph to my explanation for why I’ve been away so long! In the photo, I’m dressed and on my way to give a talk at Island Writes, but you may notice something not quite right.

Yeah, why is she wearing that black glove? What an odd-looking glove. Hey, that’s not a glove! No. It. Is. Not. It is a (stupid) cast for a broken wrist. A broken right wrist. The hand that does everything. So anyway, I broke it a little over a month ago while packing up things for the yard sale. Tripped over bags, hand-to-floor, caught myself, the end. Which also ended the infamous yard sale for this year. Ended almost everything, because I had no idea what all this hand did until I lost it. Besides typing, writing, and painting, it opens cat food cans, washes hair, signs books, holds a freaking fork, puts on earrings, uses scissors, deadheads roses, DRIVES, and chops onions. Hello. At first I couldn’t do any of it, I gave my brain a new kind of workout by practicing writing with my left hand, but one-by-one I’ve been getting things back. And Look Ma, I’m typing! I think I MIGHT get the brace off Sept. 14, my Doctor keeps little secrets to himself, I’ve learned, but I am hoping! It wasn’t a bad break, no surgery; I glowed like a 7 year old when he called me a “good patient.” It’s the little things in life. Yes, physical therapy will follow, but I’ve been doing exercises to keep my arms strong, so I hope normalcy returns soon. Thank goodness for Joe! He’s been taking such good care of me!

But I promised you surprises, and you’re going to get surprises! 🌸 Our Courage Charm has arrived . . . isn’t it wonderful? Gold with a streak of pink that goes all the way around. Pink, the color of nurturing, for yourself, and for others. The color of love.💝

It comes on its own little card . . . the charm is engraved with the words “Courage, Dear Heart . . .”💞

Thought you’d like to see my bracelet . . . I think I have them all so far!

And this? This is not for sale! This surprise of all four-seasons of my cups (which are all sold-out and no longer available anywhere on earth), is for the lucky person whose name gets drawn by Vanna in the next post! I told you I would have surprises! Just leave a comment, and you’ll be entered! It can be for you, or maybe you’ll want to take it apart and make four Christmas 🎄 presents out of it! Leave a comment!’Tis almost the season! Here comes

And this? This is for everyone! A brand new bookmark for all my Anglophile, Corgie-adoring, Queen-admiring girlfriends and the people they love! Just click HERE, print it on card-stock, have it laminated if you like . . . it makes a very sweet stocking stuffer or book-gift accountrement.(In case you’re new here, the bookmark is tucked into a copy of my book A Fine Romance, Falling in Love with the English Countryside.)

And what else? Oh yes, for everyone that preordered and waited so patiently, I’m thrilled to tell you the new cups are scheduled to arrive in California TOMORROW, on Thursday! And yes, I ordered extra so we would have some to last through Christmas, just in cases. The heart cup is another Courage item. The world is so wild these days, we need as much of this as we can get. And there’s another secret about this cup . . .💞

I didn’t design it! I designed a red cup with hearts on it which Joe thought was a little boring, and said, “Why don’t you make it look like champagne?” I said, naturally, “What are you talking about?” He tried to tell me, but I couldn’t picture it, was running out to lunch with girlfriends, and said, willy-nilly, over my shoulder, “Draw me a picture!” Because I know Joe is an artist even though he never does it. But I didn’t expect THIS. Champagne bubbles made into hearts. Of course I fell in love with it. My boy is a genius!

Very appropriately, this is Joe’s first cup ~ Champagne Hearts! He will very likely never do another one, not sure I can figure out how I tricked him into this one!🙃

I designed the bottom and the handle, so it was a group effort. From the Heart of our Home.💖 You’ll have them by the end of next week!👏

This one too! The Martha’s Vineyard cup, arriving at the Studio tomorrow, and in case you’re coming to the Island, it’s already available in the shop that carries my things here ~ which, by the way, has changed their name to Vineyard Arts Gallery, it’s still in the same place in downtown Vineyard Haven, and Robin still runs it. And one more by-the-way . . . another reason for you to leave a comment ➡️ Yes! I’ll be sending some lucky person their very own Martha’s Vineyard cup too! It’s an Autumn extravaganza!

This too! Leave a comment to win this Pumpkinhead cup! So far that makes three lucky winners and you only need to leave one comment to be entered for everything! Why you may ask? Because I can! (Writing now, from day after I published this post: Reading the lovely comments ~ can’t answer so many with bad hand, but reading 🤗, loving, sometimes tears, THANK YOU.💞 This is why. We are the world!) I detect a need for cheer and doing my best in this little world of ours, to make some of it for my Girlfriends! And, to make it more fun, the winner of this Pumpkinhead cup will also get a box of my Inspiration Notecards.

Hope you love them!

Jack also wanted me to let you know, in his own unique way (by draping himself on the thing I’m trying to photograph), that the 2020 calendars have arrived! If you preordered, you should have them!

Other good news, our teapot plates are back in stock! We’ve gotten lots of requests ~ sooo happy they’re finally here!

Great for holiday cookies, as a little serving dish and. . .

also looks great hanging on a wall!

And brand NEW, two night lights!

Blue dots on a scalloped porcelain shade!

And little flowers too!

You can read about them HERE.

I have soooo much more to tell you, but this is my first day back at typing and I’ve just been made a wee bit painfully aware, it’s time to stop! I’m only half done! Wah! Guess I will join Jack doing what we do best!

Still eating yummy whole food!

Have devolved to one-finger typing, left-hand ~ but one last thing, I’m reading this helpful book I think you might like.

Interesting book that reminds us of our lovely humanity . . .

We need to remember in our crazy world . . . also, from me to you💞, want to remind:

When I read your words, I am reminded that we all have the moral obligation to lift each other up, to connect on a personal level and to remind ourselves that all we have is each other and the small moments of beauty in the world. Those moments may not be visible at first but wen we pause and allow ourselves to just be, they appear like mist rising from the sea

  2. Mindy says:

Thank you for the kindness you give to us. With everything going on in the world it is a relief!

  3. I love your blog, and your posts, and even your beautiful font that my computer is typing with right now! And I love your cat, and the mug that Joe designed, but all of the mugs are very nice. Just saying hello and hope that your wrist heals up soon. XO

  4. CMT says:

    Hello Susan,
Sorry to learn of your broken wrist. As soon as I saw your picture, I knew you had a cast on your wrist. How did I know, here is the story of my grand-daughter (age 6) wearing the exact same fashion statement. First day of summer and no school to attend. Irene is going outside to do what she loves to do, swing on her swing set going as high as she can. Only she is standing on the swing as she is trying to fly like the birds and finds herself flying through the air towards the ground because she slips off the swing. Same injury as yourself. She is finally all healed but it took all summer. When the doctor placed the cast on her wrist she started to cry and the doctor asked her if she was in pain and she said: “No, I am sad because I cannot go swimming in the ocean on our vacation to North Carolina.”
So, it seems the two of you had an “off” summer with your injuries and challenges. Thankfully you had Joe to help you. Irene had her Mom, Dad and brother to help her. Her brother is 4 years old and for the first few days, he was cutting up his sister’s food and helping her to eat. He was so kind.
I am happy that you are on the mend and doing well.
    Blessings to you and Joe!

Well here I go I guess…never have left a comment here! I always love seeing your blog posts pop into my inbox! I found an brand new Days Book in the free book section of my high school in 10th grade and fell in love with the illustrations so much that I didn’t even write in it! I gave it away in college and have regretted that ever since; it used to cheer me up every time I opened it. I hope to buy as used one soon. I hope your wrist is right in no time Susan, and I’d love a tea cup if my name ever was pulled from the raffle 🙂

  49. Pam says:

    Dear Susan,

So delighted that your healing is going well! I’m recovering from a sprained right ankle (just a wee missed step). I was quite lucky that it did not keep me from attending the amazing July 3 performance of the touring company of “Hamilton” in Kansas City, MO (“….not going to miss my shot”🎶). The play was healing in itself.

Thanks for the “gifts” that your blog provides—-art, whimsy, music, hope, just to name a few.
With appreciation and wishes for continued healing,
    Pam

  50. Wanda Ritter says:

I know what a challenge writing with your left hand can be when you are right handed. I broke my right elbow and was unable to use that arm for much of anything. Hang in there, it will get better and they say that switching up your dominant hand, to eat, to write, etc. , really improves your brain! 🙂

  51. Care Woodard says:

Oh Susan! When I saw you so casted and still so happy, I wanted to tell you to get a wonderful PT on the island and if you need a girlfriend for a PT, I am happy to come over some weekend:) It is VERY wonderful for your brain to do things with your left hand… Plasticity and flexibility for BRAINS.. what could be lovelier. Glad you are taking good care of yourself. I am thrilled to be receiving the gifts of the joint effort, champagne hearts cup and my beloved annual desk blotter calendar so soon!!!! It all adds to the thrilling turn of the season with geese announcing their take offs and landings! Keep on being yourself on twitter and here; truly you make the world a better place. Just yesterday, I delivered the tiny pitcher of courage to the doorstep of a friend in need. How miraculous your artistic and inspired self, through your ART, travels through the world! 🙂

  52. Cathy Mirda says:

Susan, best wishes for a very quick recovery! I love your blog and have been a big fan since I purchased my 1st cookbook eons ago. Your positive outlook is inspiring. Take care.

  60. Claudette Simms says:

Susan….how wonderful for you & happy that you’re back to typing!
Speedy recovery wishes to you! It’s true…we don’t realize all we do
until something happens. Sorry to hear you broke your dominant wrist
but boy doesn’t it make you appreciate your wrist all that much more?
Last winter I sprained both ankles & broke a leg….I too as so thankful for
my lovely & helpful husband along with many helpful & caring family
and friends. And my accident made me not only appreciate my normally
Good health but also gave me a glimpse into the life of folks who have
handicaps and what they deal with on a daily basis. It’s a lot…and certainly
Can be tiring & frustrating….especially navigating bathrooms in a wheelchair…
when many bathrooms may ‘meet code’ but really are not functionally designed.
    Oh dear…I’ve gone rambling on.
All the best to you in your recovery & PT Susan & thank you for being so generous
Love you to Maine & back!

  61. Linda Kammerzelt says:

So thankful you were not hurt worse and healing in time for fall celebrations.

  62. Jane says:

Thank you for passing on your optimism and strength, even in your time of healing! I hope you feel better soon.

  63. Sandi says:

Once again I don’t see my comment from 8/19. Hope you’re receiving them!

  64. Donna H. says:

So sorry to hear you broke your wrist. I hope you heal well and fast. Lovely post and great to hear from you. I love the little night lights; the blue one reminds me of blueberries-which I love. And, you and Joe should collaborate on more mugs, that Champagne hearts is very cute.

  65. Kathy Cronberg says:

You are love and light! Saying a little prayer that you are free of your cast on the 14th, and back in the swing of things soon after. Thank you for a cheerful post that reminds us of the joy to be found in the world. And as I’m reading your post, I’m sitting on my front porch on a 60 degree morning (!!) watching the hummers at the feeder and the deer grazing in the front yard. And reminding myself of what is truly important in life!

  66. Linda G. Kammerzelt says:

I am so thankful that you were not hurt worse, and that you are healing in time for fall celebrations !

  70. Jackie says:

You wear that odd-looking glove quite well. . .

  71. Christine Riha says:

Susan, I was fortunate to meet you once upon a long time ago in Braintree, MA. Love you, your works, yes, everything. We lived in Braintree for over 20 years prior to moving to Cape Cod where I am originally from. Long story short, after many years living there, we made the decision to move to Central Florida. Too many snow storms in 2015 helped make the decision for us. Had an Estate Sale and sold just about everything except all of your beautiful books. So a part of you and Cape Cod are always with me. Miss the Cape and hope to visit.
Keeping up with your wonderful creations. I hope you are on the mend. ♥️🌴

  72. Nancy Kilner says:

  73. Karen Horrigan says:

I’m so sorry about your hand/wrist! Praying for a speedy recovery! Oh how I’d LOVE to get my hands on the season mugs!! I’ve searched EVERYWHERE and you’re right, they’re nowhere to be found!! I’m teaching the four seasons in my second grade class right now. What a great visual they would be. Can’t you hear Vivaldi playing in the background?? Blessings to you and Joe!

Lovely post Susan. The cups, dishes, and little lights are very pretty, and I adore the pumpkinhead cup.

  76. Kathryn Phenix says:

Keep healing! I know your pain and Joe’s. Many years ago my sister broke her wrist in an auto accident (could have lost her life but was blessed). I had to wash her thick hair which was almost to her waist. What a job! Be sure to follow thru with your therapy and you will never know you broke it.
Thanks for the gorgeous pictures of Jack. I needed them. Today I have to take my 18 yr old Chuck (Seal-point Siamese) to the vet to be put down. He is no longer eating and can barely move about. So please give Jack a big kiss and hug from me and Chuck.

  77. Bonnie Wright says:

  79. Chris H says:

We don’t seem to notice how much we actually use different parts of our amazing bodies until we cut, bruise or break something……I empathise with you and hope and pray you heal quickly. Give Joe a big hug from all the girlfriends for looking after you so well. God Bless

  80. Mary Wilson says:

Love our blog- please enter me in your drawings.

Thank you so much for the great post, typed with an ouchie wrist. You’re so good to all your Girlfriends! I’m so glad to hear that you’re doing better. Hope you can rest and get all healed up!

  82. Sharon Silva says:

“The Sound of Silence”…I love quiet; it allows my thoughts or unease to lessen in volume. I love what the Bible says, “Be still and know that I am God”. How often are we “still” these days? Not very I think as the world is always in a state of rushing life by. Joe the artist! Who knew! Time for me to do some shopping-charms, teacups and more! Prayers for complete healing. I chuckled when you said you “glowed like a 7 year old”, lol 3 cheers for the arrival of Fall!! 90 degree temps are to be banished! Thanks for being our No 1 Girlfriend!

  83. Just got back from a week in the deep woods. Oh my, so wonderful and peaceful❤️

  87. Susan Mcenerney-Brasier says:

Lovely blog, I can relate with your wrist. I sprained my right hand last fall, and it still hurts. Yes, it made life rather difficult, but inventive ways to do things. I love your art work and all the beautiful mugs you have made. Enjoy the day, and the remaining days of summer.

  88. Janie Osborne near Cumberland Gap National Park says:

Susan, So happy to see what you have been up to.. I hope your hand feels better soon. I saw Joe‘s cup and my heart leapt, and then I saw the story about the cup and my heart soared ♥️🌈! All of the cups are lovely, and the corgi bookmark is adorable. Give Jack a kiss and a squeeze for me he looks just delicious in that last picture! Oh and one of my most favorite things about this post is the watercolor heart with the wings I just love love love it! Sending love to you and all of the girlfriends and your sweet Joe and Jack.

  89. Claudia M says:

Well, you lived up to my promise to my sewing group gals (those who didn’t already know you)! Someone commented that they don’t expose themselves to the morning news anymore – just too much aggravation to start the day with. I told them that I go to Susan Branch’s blog and also browse the website while I have my first cup of coffee. It always starts my day off cheerfully with all the happy stuff inside – kitty pictures, gardens, art, and so much pretty “stuff”. I said, “What do you mean, you didn’t know about her except in the Country Register?” And then I said, “Go to her blog tomorrow morning, listen to her ‘Musica’ while you read and browse; I promise you’ll be all smiley and happy!” And then there was your latest blog this morning! Except for your “black glove” , I’m all smiley and happy. I hope you get back to normal soon. Love all the new cups, BTW. : )

I love your latest post. I, too, was wondering what wonderful summer trip you and Joe were on. Now I know! I just finished your book, Isle of Dreams again for the fourth time. Each year I read it in the month I went to Cape Cod and bought it at Titcomb’s from Elizabeth. It still amazes me how everything in the book just fell into place and you survived. Coincidence?? Thanks for all you do.

Good Morning Dear Sue! I’m so sorry about your darned wrist and your (stupid cast). You cracked me up with the freaking fork comment! We have all had those moments in life when you say, what an idiot I am. I wish I could take back those last 3 seconds (all it takes to break a wrist). Those three seconds end up lasting weeks and weeks. Maybe it was the universe telling you to slow down a bit.

I adore the new mug with the champagne hearts! Joe did an amazing job designing it! I am going to order one for my daughter Sarah’s birthday. She will be 26 in September. Remember I told you about her? She is getting her PhD at the University of Michigan. She has had a rough year with her boyfriend of 4 years breaking up with her (the day after Christmas) and then Her grandmother passing away two days later. My older Daughter, Jessie, and I both adore you and have been trying to get her to read your books but she was just so busy with school. She finally did this spring and they were a revelation to her. Now she loves you too!

It has been deliciously cool here in up state NY. It gives me more energy and the wish to do everything all at once! Cook, clean, sparkle, bake, quilt, garden etc.. It will have to wait this morning as I have to go clean (that’s what I do) for an elderly gentleman. He is 93 and his lovely wife of 69 years passed away in June. She came here from England when she was a little girl via an ocean liner to escape the war(WWII). She was lovely. Classy, genteel, elegant and sweet. I will miss her dearly. She loved Downton Abbey and we used to have our weekly discussions about each episode. Now I feel like I want to swoop her husband up in my arms and take care of him. He is lost with out her and doesn’t even know how to make a pot of coffee by himself. I make his bed and fluff the pillows for him. I wash his little load of laundry and then fold his cute little boxer shorts at the dining room table while he sits in his chair. I play Pandora Rosemary Clooney Radio on my phone to keep us company. Anything to make the house cheerful and happy. I think he likes it. I always feel sad when have to leave and see him in the window sitting in his chair. Reminds me to be grateful for my life and husband and daughters and my happy home. Really that’s all that matters isn’t it? I’m trying hard to stay positive and happy during these crazy times we live in right now. I have decided to watch less news and stay off my phone more. Feed my soul with good things. You are a good role model for that and I love you for it. Have a wonderful day <3

Hi Susan, So sorry about your wrist. Especially being your dominant hand. Understand completely – been there done that. As they say in the fullness of time you will be all better. One of the books I read this summer was “Summer of 69” by Elin Hilderbrand. Although most of the story was in Nantucket some of it was in Martha’s Vineyard. Absolutely delightful. Now Martha’s is on my bucket list to visit.
Love all the mugs, plates etc. but the night lights are so lovely!!! Take care, Sharon
