I’m so glad we can find fairy lights in stores nowadays, especially the solar powered ones you can put anywhere that the sun shines during the day. One of these days I’m going to be brave enough to have a dinner party at night out under the stars. Of course, I’ll have to spray for ‘skeeters’ and probably use my mosquito plant as the centerpiece! Hahaha!

I do a ton of prep for skeeters (bug buckets, skin so soft [yuk}), but the very best thing is a big fan and a long extension cord. Mosquitos can’t handle any wind at all. They just blow away. My girlfriend sets a table in the middle of her lawn in the backyard, not under a tree, or any special spot, just the stars, but it’s perfect.

All great ideas. Lighting the night in Summer is magical. My favorite lighting spectacular is Illumination Night on the Vineyard!

    Hi Susan,
I love fireflies! When we’ve had enough rainfall, and have family here to enjoy, we set off a pretty good fireworks display over our big field on the fourth. Love summer too!

  4. I love your ideas, you make everything sounds so homey and romantic. May I come stay with you for just a while? Of course I would need to bring my Sweetie! Thanks for the wonderful feelings!

I saw a post on Facebook asking how we first came to know about Susan Branch. I remember it so well. I worked in a Hallmark store in the late 80’s and we got in a shipment of charming cookbooks. Susan’s Heart of the Home and Vineyard Seasons were among them. I was completely mesmerized by the hand lettering and whimsical illustrations. That was the beginning of my Susan Branch collection. I’ve been a big fan ever since and always be.

yes, I agree…light is magic!!! we are in our first Virginia summer…having moved from a lifetime in NH…and, every evening, @ dusk (or, twilight….whichever you prefer to call it…) our lawns, and all the fields surrounding us, are FILLED with fireflies who just rise up in droves and twinkle and sparkle and just give us such wonderment and joy!!!! never saw such a thing before. and, we are wow-ed. we don’t have our backyard built the way we want it yet…no arbor, no pergola, not yet…but, when we do the design….we will surely factor in getting optimum enjoyment of “our” fireflies. thanks, Susan, as always. yes, light is magic. you are a giver-of-light to all of us.

You have the best of the best. There are no fireflies where I grew up in California, of course I read about them in all my books, but I was also very wow-ed the first time I saw one. Another amazing detail of nature. What a world!

  7. These lovelies just make my day! My friend and I have enjoyed your work for years….I share these with her.

  8. We recently came into this century (kicking and crying) and bought cell phones that have APPlications. Dear Daughter showed Dear Dad an app. called ‘starchart’. Now we are out gazing at the stars almost every night. I prefer the app. that tells you what that plane is that is flying over. DH says I have a ‘limited vision’.

They are fun aren’t the Wanda? I have one that turns my phone into a flashlight — I can’t tell you how handy that’s been — who would have thought?

My husband and I love fireflies too. One night, coming home, he saw so many
fireflies he just had to pull the car over and watch in amazement — hundreds of fireflies were rising from the field! I wish I could have been with him, but I do like to sit outside in the evening and watch for them. We have twinkle lights on each of our market umbrellas and on the Mt. Laurel. Sometimes, when we have a campfire on the patio, the sparks rise to the sky just like our little fireflies.
I don’t know if I could be happy living somewhere where the fireflies aren’t.
They are a magical part of summer.
    JoAnne

It was magic to a reading child too, and so fun when I finally got to the island and saw them for the first time. They were out there last night.
