Shirley Temple was an American Valentine

Valentine’s Day is almost here . . . I hope everyone who wanted one got one of our Love Banners … I hung one on the door in my studio where I display some of the wonderful letters I get from kids.  Just seems to fit right in there.

Love

As lots of you know, a national treasure passed away yesterday.  Shirley Temple, in case you missed it, died at age eighty-five.

love nostalgicLike so many of you, my mom introduced me to Shirley when I was a little girl ~ we would watch her movies and sing her songs while we hung clothes on the line or did dishes; we knew all the words.  We could do a Shirley Temple singalong in our backyard.

Yesterday we started what’s turned out to be an unexpected memorial for Shirley on our Facebook page  — everyone is remembering how they “met” her.  I don’t think it’s slowed down yet today . . . in case you’re in the mood to read happy memories about the joy one little girl brought to the world, we have a lovely representation on FOSB.  Here she is dancing her heart out, as adorable as always . . .

She was and is a kind of fairytale hero to me.  Her movie characters were always brave, strong, wily, and self-sufficient.  In her films wholesome goodness won out girlfriendsover meanness and evil every time.  I liked the way life looked through her eyes.  If you have a young daughter or granddaughter, this would be a most excellent way to share something beautiful . . .  to give them not only Shirley, but wonderful old movies in general, for a lifetime of happy tears, romance, something to do on a rainy day and a lovely way to escape from harsher realities of life.  We all need to take a break sometimes, kids need to learn how that’s done and this is the perfect way to show them how to supply themselves with a world the way they want it to be. During the depression and even when President Kennedy was shot (among other trying times in our history)  . . . who was it that kept the home fires burning?  Shirley Temple, always there on film, filling us with her contagious joy.

miss-shirley-temple:</p><br /><br /> <p>Sassy Shirley Temple is Sassy.<br /><br /><br />

She went on to lead a fulfilling life and bring even more honor to her country.  This is Shirley when she’s around three or four in Baby Take a Bow, one of her first movies (Hasn’t he got everything . . .♫).

flowers

I met Shirley Temple in person when I was eight.  She was grown up and married, she was Shirley Temple Black and looked more like she did in The Bachelor and the Bobby Soxer.  I’d gone to work with my best friend Karen and her Shirley Templedad — he painted sets at NBC Studios in Burbank, it was Saturday and he had to go pick something up so he took us along.  Shirley was walking down the hall. In high heels and a suit with long curled hair, all grown up.  She  bent over to us to say hello.  I could hardly believe that the person I’d loved for as long as I could remember was right in front of me.  But the dimples were a giveaway. Of course I was awestruck and couldn’t wait to get home and tell my mom. ♥  Shirley sparkled through my childhood, for the world and now she’s gone.  But she left behind a lovely light.  Goodbye dear Shirley, and thank you.  You were the perfect person to grow up with.

Spring

“If winter comes, can spring be far behind?”

No, it cannot.  And look what I got yesterday, just a little reminder.  A preview ~ of course I had to show you . . . the new spring banners that Janie is making for us right now.  It’ll probably be a couple of weeks before we get them, but I had to show you, because LOOK, Lambs!  Adorable, with the little card and envelope —  don’t you think?

bunnies in spring

And Bunnies!  Which I immediately hung in my window, flinging spring right into the snow’s face!  The lambs are the normal size you are used to . . . the bunnies are quite a bit bigger — but they too have the cute envelope and card so you can send them to lucky friends and drape them in your kitchen windows.

Feb 2011 083

My bunny boy and I are going to be off island celebrating Valentine’s Day on old Cape Cod.   The next day (Saturday, the 15th) we’ll be at Costco in Avon, MA signing A FINE ROMANCE from 1 to 3 in the afternoon.  So if you’re a Costco member, come by and say hello!  Don’t leave me there alone!

isn't it romantic

arbor

We’re going on the ferry, even though it still pretty much looks like this outside.  I’ll be wearing my sea bands even for the forty-five minute ride, because we’re expecting crazy winds and more of everything cold, wet, drizzly, frozen, drenching and blowing.

I turned in my very last calendar just this morning.  In the nick of time.  But they are done!  2015 is buttoned up, calendar wise.  As soon as I have the artwork in bloggable form, I’ll give you a little preview!  I get to go write a new book!  As soon as I figure it out, I’ll tell you what it is!

Kitty Love

One more thing before I go . . . A quilt to brighten your day . . .

flower garden

Pamela, one of our Girlfriends wanted to see a bigger picture of the quilt I posted a few days ago in front of the snowy window in my studio.  So here it is.

flowers

flower gardenThis may be my favorite quilt of all the ones I have . . . or at least close.  Love this design called Grandmother’s Flower Garden and the colors and the way this quilter left a white space in the middle of the flower and used the same fabric all around it on every one of them …. and look at all the wonderful vintage fabrics.

little things

OK, gotta go pack and do kitty kissing for a while.  We’ve got a good kitty sitter coming to stay here while we’re away.  Big and brawny kitty sitter, but sweet as pie when it comes to kitties.  When we get home I’ll get busy on that promised giveaway.  I haven’t forgotten — just trying to be in a spot where I’ll be able to moderate, not in a Fine Romance Van out in a storm somewhere!  Wish us luck! Happy Valentine’s Day Girlfriends!

  1. oh my goodness gracious!!! i am the first to comment today! you must have just put this post up…
i am wondering what happened to the pancake book? i think that is what the working title was, or a variation of it maybe? i remember something about a breakfast themed book in the works back before “a fine romance”…

  2. Barbara in NC says:

Please do a Spring book to go with the others…I put each seasonal book on a book holder in my kitchen…you could use lambs, too!! Loved ShirleyTemple but she lives on in her movies for future children to adore, I hope. Have fun off island…have you ever had the frozen cream puffs at Costco…addictive! Love all your posts…thanks for keeping us in a happy mode this winter!

  3. i didn’t mean to bypass shirlie temple…i watched the reruns of her movies every single saturday morning on channel 20 here in maryland when i was little girl. she was and still is my absolute favorite! she was a very accomplished little girl/woman at every stage of her life and will be held in high esteem for a long time to come. a friend and i were just talking about her movies one day last week…odd how that happens sometimes. have a great day and weekend.

  4. mary spring says:

  5. Winnie Nielsen says:

I am one of those people who also grew up with Shirley Temple. There are so many memories of Mom and us kids(and neighborhood kids) piled in the living room on a Sunday afternoon and watching Shirley Temple movies. We laughed, we cried and we were glued to the screen. Sometimes Mom made popcorn which was a real treat back in the 1950s. Watching Shirley Temple movies with my Mom are some of the sweetest childhood memories because she loved the music and the beautiful endings. Back in the 1950s, moms were always busy and having her participate fully with us in a movie was just the best and a rare occasion. I am so glad that you did this tribute to her on your blog. Somehow, I just knew you would!! So, a big thanks from me in Florida!

Hope that Cape Cod journey was not too stressful. It all sounds very fun and exciting!

PS That Bunny bunting is just the absolute cutest! Can’t wait for them to come in.

  6. Marie (Long Beach, California) says:

Shirley Temple was one of my all time favorites growing up. She was a beautiful human being, who lived her life to the fullest. May she rest in peace. The spring banners are so cute, great job Janie! Wishing you and Joe a very Happy Valentine’s Day and safe travels. I’m sure your book signing at Costco will be wonderful! Have fun! ♥

  7. Ann says:

My favorite Shirley movie is Heidi. The scene where The Grandfather is running after the carriage she is in is heartbreaking. But all turns out well in the end. Enjoy your time off island and I know you will get a large crowd at Costco. So excited for the 2015 blotter calendar!

    • Elaine in Toronto says:

Heidi is my favourite too. Happy Valentine’s Day everyone. Be kind to each other and love one another.

    • Martha N. says:

I remember watching Heidi at school in third grade. Loved it! I wonder where all those old films and projectors have gone… Also loved “A Little Princess”. What a treasure those movies are!

    • Karen P (Wisconsin) says:

Heidi has always been my favorite. I’ve seen it a hundred times. So much so, in fact, that when we had our firstborn daughter, I named her Heidi! She’s very much like the Shirley Temple Heidi character, too!….spunky, determined, loving, helpful!

    • evangeline says:

Heidi is my favorite too….how dear Shirley Temple is to me. I remember..my mom telling me she was named after her…very special indeed. ..

  8. Debbie P ~ Weedsport, NY says:

Thank you for the beautiful memories of Shirley Temple ~ presented in a way that only you could do! The sky is so bright and blue today…it’s got a different feeling even though it’s freezing out. Must be Spring :)…on its way.
Have a wonderful, romantic time away with Joe as you “shift gears” once again to get on the AFR super highway. You’re gonna make so many girlfriends so happy on the 15th! God Bless!
    xoDebbie

  9. Lori says:

My mom was a Shirley Temple fan – she named her cat AND her pet goat Shirley Temple! She introduced me to her movies and songs. They played such an important part of my childhood. My mom passed away a little over a year ago and now Shirley. I wonder if they will meet in heaven and my mom will tell her about Shirley’s namesakes? Happy Valentine’s Day Susan and to all the Girlfriends. <3

  10. Hi Susan: Let me re-introduce myself to you. I sent you a letter several years ago about my Father passing away and I how much I missed him. It’s funny how I don’t really know you, however, I reached out to you. And you replied with a post on your blog. It was very touching to my heart. A sincere thanks.
I have always loved Shirley Temple. She was my idol, my girlfriend. I couldn’t wait for one of her movies. Your tribute to her is very fitting.

  11. Janet in Rochester says:

Well-done, Sue. A beautiful tribute to Shirley. I hope she now knows – somehow – how very much she meant to so many people. That line from “The Wizard of Oz” has been rattling around in my head since I heard about Shirley yesterday – “A heart is not judged by how much YOU love… but by how much you are loved BY OTHERS…” Good night – sleep well, Shirley.

  12. How did I miss the Love banner? Was it a download? I’ll look around for a bit. And thanks for the beautiful post on Shirley Temple. She changed our world. Sweet hugs, Diane from Florida

  13. Christine Perica says:

Thank you, Susan, for the heartfelt tribute to darling Curly Top, Shirley Temple. I and my three younger sisters also grew up on her movies and I’m teaching “Animal Crackers” to my granddaughters right now!

One plea for your next book: Christmas of your childhood, which is the Christmas of so many of your followers, from what I read. I love you “Christmas from the Heart of the Home” but this could focus on blogs you’ve written over the years about your memories. Please…of course we will love whatever you choose! Thank you, friend.

  14. Christine from Covina says:

I too grew up with Shirley Temple movies and songs which I sang with my mother. My mother even went to one of Shirley’s birthday parties as she grew up in Beverly Hills and went to private school with many “show business” kids. She loved Shirley and especially admired her for her diplomatic activities in later life! It is hard for so many of our icons to pass! Aren’t we lucky we have dvds of her movies. I’ve watched them all with my granddaughters! Now they love shirley too!

    • sbranch says:

Imagine all the inspirational talents born before film or camera that are lost to us forever! We are so lucky!

  15. Elaine in Toronto says:

Susan, just had to ask – are those little hearts on Joe’s tie? Sweet but subtle!

  16. Sandra Mailey says:

I’m so spoiled by Facebook that I almost forget that I can’t click “Like” on other websites! As I read your blog I find myself ready to “Like” so many things!

I knew of Shirley Temple growing up, but wasn’t really able to see her work until we had a television station nearby – I grew up “way out back of beyond”. When her movies were finally available I spent many hours watching her sing and dance and “sparkle”. What a joy!

Have a wonderful Valentine’s Day, and a busy Saturday at Costco. I would love to be able to join you, but the distance is too great and the weather is too treacherous. I’m hoping that one of these days you’ll have a book signing somewhere within driving distance. XOXO

  17. peg says:

We watched the Shirley Temple movies every weekend when they were on. Though I never had the luck to meet her, still…I felt like I did know her. Didn’t we all?!! Thanks for the lovely tribute, Susan!

  18. Pat Mofjeld of St. Paul, MN says:

Have a fun get-away for Valentine’s Day! If you’d come to St. Paul to the Costco, I’d be there. 🙂 Will all of the Costco’s have your book?

  19. Carol Maurer~~~~ Kennewick, Wa says:

Susan ~~~ HAPPY VALENTINE’S DAY to you too!! I’m really looking forward to it. Frank and I, along with 2 other couples are going to celebrate by going out to dinner. Haven’t been to this restruant for 20 some odd years. It over looks the Columbia River, although we won’t be able to see it as it’ll be dark by then.

Our snow is justs about all gone. The temps have really gone up from what they were a few days ago. I believe it’s in the 50s right now. The wind is also blowing some. Remember the “Pineapple Express”? That’s what we’re having right now…. warm wind.

I bet you are really relieved to have ALL the calendars finished up now. That’s quite a project, but we all love them and look forward to them each year.

    xoxox,
    Carol M

    • sbranch says:

I know you do Carol, plus I don’t know what I would do with that bit of real estate on my own kitchen wall if I didn’t have my calendar!

  20. Sweet Sue says:

Just love the lambie note cards with matching envelopes…..I celebrate Spring and Easter in a big way sending out cards when it officially becomes Spring and then again just before Easter. Will have to place an order for 30 of your lambie “Spring” cards. Also love your “bunny” spring banner. Will order it for a seasonal get together we always have in April! Just keep creating new things…all of us girlfriends love all your creations!
May you and Joe have a most wonderful and sweet Valentine’s Day. My sweetie and I are getting away to celebrate the day as well!
By the way if we are in the SLO area can we stop by your office there to pick up goodies or do you prefer we place orders online? Just asking as we will soon be going up that way for some RNR.

    • sbranch says:

Just so you know sweet Sue, that’s a lambie banner that comes with a card with an envelope. We don’t have any of the “selling apparatus” needed at the studio, like ways to take money or make change so it’s really best to do it on line.

  21. katherine says:

Lovely tribute to a lovely girl/lady. My girls and I enjoyed Shirley as Heidi, we should ‘surely’ watch some more of her movies soon! Lamb update from our farm….we are up to 24 lambs…which is pretty good for us. We are just a small family farm. The kids do most of the barn work with the lambs and the girls sew lamb jammies for them all to help ward off the cold for their first 24 to 48 hours. We have a baby monitor in the house connected to the barn so we hear lamb sounds and tweety birds all day long. It was very cold this am, below zero outside and 1 degree in the barn….so we are ready for a bit of spring warmth. Thanks for sharing quilt pics, just lovely! Happy Valentines Day to all!!

  22. pat addison (cave junction,OR) says:

Hello Susan, its sad we have lost our childhood icon, our little curly top. I can still remember so many wonderful afternoons spent watching her movies with friends, grandma and sometimes mom. we laughed, cried and cheered for her, and of course there was always a tea party for “the girls” complete with cookies or popcorn and of course the signature Shirley temple drinks for all of us to have, a very special way to spend a fun afternoon. well I spent yesterday with my bowl of popcorn and tears in my eyes watching her movies, when my hubby got home, he saw the tears, but I just told him it was the onions I had been slicing and chopping for dinner… a good cover up I think. think I will spend another rainy afternoon watching the rst of her movies that I have and stuff my tummy like a goop with more popcorn and tonight in honor of Shirley I will mix me a Shirley temple and toast her. good bye little curly top, thank you for all the wonderful and warm memories of childhood. hugs…. 🙂

  23. KarenP (Wisconsin) says:

A perfect tribute to a perfect lady! In this world of young superstars who take very wrong paths in life, Shirley was/is a perfect role model for all young girls. Positive, kind, doing good for mankind! I, like you, could not love her more. Love, love, love Janie’s banners, too! She is quite brilliant, I think! xx

  24. Carol in Sierra Madre, CA says:

    Hi Susan,
Your post today touched my heart, remembering Shirley Temple movies watched on Saturday mornings with my little sister when we were young. You were so lucky to have met her, and the Beatles, too! Right place at the right time! I’ve wanted to comment on your previous few posts too, but you were receiving sooo many comments I was sure mine would not be missed! I bought the latest digital issue of Celebrating Everyday Life so I could have your interview. Loved it, as I do everything that concerns you! You are such an inspiration, Susan. Thank you for being such a wonderful “girlfriend” to all of us out here in Susan Branch Blog-land.

  25. Sharon Corey in South Carolina says:

In that first photo you added of Shirley Temple with her in the pretty blue dress and hair bow . . . I think you looked very much like her when you were that age. I love all the family photos that you add to your blog. It makes me feel like I have known you all my life. It is very snowy here in South Carolina today. Almost seven inches of snow so far. Something we just aren’t used to. More precipitation expected in the form of sleet and freezing rain and then . . . we will probably lose our power and be without for several days. Thank goodness I have all your books here at the farm with me. I hope you and Joe and a wonderful Valentine’s Day holiday.

One of your biggest fans from the time you published your first book!
    Sharon

    • sbranch says:

I can’t imagine myself ever looking like Shirley, but I love that you think so! 🙂 Stay warm and safe down there. The stories of stranding have already begun!

  26. Margot in Virginia Beach says:

I always thought it was a good idea for her to go from actress to ambassador with her personality. We ate popcorn and watched many old movies with our mother, that she saw in the theaters in the 30s and 40s. Some were so glamourous!
Have a nice Valentines! I wish I could run up to Costco, but the weather is NOT good. My Valentine is coming home and the end of next week!!!

  27. Shirley Temple was a delight; she once said her favorite co-star was Bill “Bojangles” Robinson. I bet he was delighted with her as well…she matched him step for step up and down those stairs, her 6 and him 57. She’ll always be a legend.

  28. Carilyn Wolski says:

Hello Susan! Have a safe trip off the island! Enjoy your Valentine’s Day, you and Joe!!! And, good luck at your book signing at Costco……you’ll shine!!!!!

  29. Sarah Maldonado says:

Yes, we all grieve together over losing “our” Shirley. My mom and I sang the songs together, too. My dear mom always identified with her since they were both born the same year.
And here we are at Valentine’s Day! My husband and I celebrated our 24th anniversary on Monday and we always remember that on Valentine’s Day that year, we were on our honeymoon and having dinner at a luau in Hawaii! This year we ‘ll be with friends and our Sunday School class participating in their version of the Newlywed Game! Should be fun! Hope you and Joe and the rest of the girlfriends have fun, too!

  30. Charlene H. (S.F.Valley) SoCal says:

I just knew you would post a tribute to Shirley Temple. I feel like there is such a hole in today’s life with her passing away. Yes, indeed, I liked “seeing life through her eyes”, too! My mother also introduced me to Shirley Temple and to Toni perms so that this little Japanese girl could have a head full of curls. I loved watching her movies on Saturday afternoons, singing and swaying in imitation. Smiling away as I type this and remember the smell of perm solution. Thank you for bringing back such good memories, Susan. And, of course, thank you, Shirley Temple Black, for sharing your talents and accomplished life with us. ♥♥♥

  31. Cara says:

Shirley Temple was an amazing performer, and so terribly young. But there WAS something exploitative about that level of performance for such a young child. It must have been exhausting and exacting. I’m not surprised that she got away from the business when she was old enough to remove herself. The talent though was indeed incredible. She looks to only be around 4 or so possibly younger. That to me is a time for children to be playing and not already earning a living.

    • sbranch says:

The especially good part about Shirley’s life is that she had a smart thoughtful mom who was totally there with Shirley all the time and believed in fun ~ they had a wonderful relationship.

  32. Jane F. says:

Thank you for the Shirley Temple tribute, Susan! Here is a special schedule of her movies on TCM for any who might light to see them on March 9th! tcm.com/this-month/movie-news.html?id=954728&name=March-Schedule-Change-for-Shirley-Temple-Tribute
Hope you and Joe have a lovely romantic Valentine’s Day off island, and good luck with Costco!! Glad you have your sidekick to brave the elements! Mmmmm! I can smell the fresh air, now!! 🙂 <3 xo

  33. chris consentino says:

as always…thank you, oh! thank you!!…for everything! do have safe travels!!! I am sure you’ll not be “all alone” at Costco! but, try to not start-in on the cream-puffs until finished with your signing & meeting folks. too gauche to meet & greet with cream all over your hands and mouth!!! hehe. but…mmmmm. have a great Valentine’s celebration! i will say what i ususally say about most holidays: EVERYDAY is …..Valentine’s Day…(same holds true for Thanksgiving, Christmas, Mother’s and Father’s Day as well.) enjoy! take care!!! and, safe travels!!!!! much love and…thanks!

  34. Karen chandler says:

Enjoy your postings….but do tell what is that fabric behind the lamb banner ? Is it the same as the Johnson bros. rose chintz? Where can I find it ? Must have !!

  35. Lorraine in White Plains, NY says:

So sad to learn of Shirley Temple’s passing. But just think of the millions of people, into whose lives she brought such hope and happiness during this country’s most difficult years in the 1930’s, who will be there to welcome her in heaven! Shirley take a bow! I loved her movies growing up and, between me and his grandmother, my now-grown son had (has!) a soft spot for her. And, surely, I wasn’t the only one who swung on my swing or skipped down the block, singing one of her songs, imagining being “discovered” and appearing in a movie with her! I had no idea she was a grown woman by the time I saw her films in the 50’s!! I was heartbroken! Isn’t it wonderful how we will always be able to share her with future generations through the magic of restored digital recordings. There will only ever be one Shirley Temple, God rest her soul.

  36. What a beautiful tribute to this lovely, accomplished woman! Shirley left us so much. And you got to meet her. How special! My favorite Shirley movie is “The Bachelor and the Bobby Soxer,” and I anxiously await its next showing on the TCM network.

That little video of “The Codfish Ball” is memorable for another reason, Susan; that’s a very young, handsome Buddy Ebsen (“Jed Clampett”) dancing with Shirley. Trivia: Did you know that Buddy was used for some of the animatronic dancing bears at Disneyland?

    • sbranch says:

I really wish she’d have danced with James Cagney … he was such a funny dancer — wonderful too — it would have been darling to see her dance in his stiff-legged style.

      • Janet in Rochester says:

Oh, gee – Shirley & Jimmy Cagney would have been awesome together, wouldn’t they! He’s my favorite [male] song-and-dance star from the Golden Age of Movies. I can just see him and Shirley tap-dancing down that long flight of stars in the White House at the end of “Yankee Doodle Dandy” – wow! Top 10 movie moment!

        • sbranch says:

That was great. Can’t you just picture her imitating him wearing a little satin Yankee Doodle Dandy suit? Would have been adorable.

  37. dee says:

    Hi Susan
What a great post. I just adored Shirley Temple, who didn’t right. Be safe traveling in this weather, I Have sea bands too!!!~ gotta have sea bands.
Have a wonderful Valentines day Susan, you and Joe
    deezie

    • sbranch says:

Until this blog I never realized how many people loved Shirley Temple … another wonderful thing about kindred spirits!

  38. Jill Dickerson says:

    Susan,
Forgive this idea if it has already been suggested or tried, but I’m hooked on a weekly “calendar” that has 52 sheets of paper in a “tablet.” All the sheets are the same; I tear one off at the end of the week. The 9 X 9 1/2 size has each day of the week written in a square down the left side–no dates–and four 1 X 2 inch spaces across in which to write. I fill in the dates as I change the page each week and can write in appointments and notes and to-do lists. I like a monthly calendar for a big picture but like this weekly calender to keep closer on my counter. I could certainly see your designs and words at the top and bottom of the page. The spaces are blank, but I could also envision a tiny critter or flower or kind word in the corner of a few squares. I think I have paid under $10 for mine, but they are harder to find now.

Thanks for you constant reminders of the good and important aspects of life, not to mention the fun stuff. I’m not close to meet you at a book signing but enjoyed every word and picture in A Fine Romance!

    • sbranch says:

Good idea Jill! I’m so happy you liked our book!

      • Janet in Rochester says:

As my dad would say: “another country heard from.” LOL. Anyway, here’s another vote for Jill’s idea – I think it’s great. I love a “tablet” type calendar too and one with all your special little touches would be SO CUTE! I’m picturing an “October” page with a bunch of those sweet little Fall leaves sweeping down over the page etc. Adorable.

    • Holly says:

I love using Susan’s Day book. I actually have one that is my weekly calendar, and another one I keep birthdays, special notable days, death anniversaries — all family stuff recorded to hand off to the next generation “family record keeper”. I love being able to look at a glance and see what has happened in the past. My mom kept those dates on her calendars, and a few years ago I went through all of them, and transferred the dates to my one book.

  39. Donna Klein says:

I am so excited to know about the FB page! I went right over and liked it and am very excited to have another way to chat with you and all the girlfriends! I hope your new book will be about how you got to Martha’s Vineyard and started writing books and lived in the cute little house! But whatever it is, I’ll be looking forward to reading it. Hope you and Joe have a fabulous Valentine’s weekend 🙂

  40. Heartsdesire says:

Oh Susan, this quilt is absolutely gorgeous. Love the vintage feel of it. I’ve always wanted to make a Grandmother’s Flower Garden, but so far, it’s still on my “to do” list. I’m not sure, but I think it might be a bit complicated, so when I feel like a challenge, then I’ll try it. Enjoy your Valentine’s Day in Cape Cod with Joe. What a wonderful place to be a very important day of the year. Congrats on finishing the calendars. Must be quite a load off your mind. Can’t wait for a new book idea.

  41. Tricia Debs says:

Hapy Valentines Day to Sue and Joe! Have a blast. Hope you found a great place on the Cape to spend this special day. Shirley Temple always brings fond memories of my Mom who loved Shirley and introduced me to her. Loved watching those movies when I was a kid.
This cold snow winter is going on way to long for all of us. Everyone stay safe and warm! Happy Valentines Day to all.

  42. marty kunkis says:

    Hi Susan:
Just finished “A Fine Romance” and enjoyed every minute. Your gift of description is captivating.
You spread so much love and good cheer that it is only right to wish you and Joe a Very Happy Valentine’s Day and a year of sweet memories ahead.
“oh the weather outsidei is frightful, but the fire is so delightful, Let snow Let it snow, let it snow!” Have fun. Marty

  43. Linda Pintarell says:

Rest in Peace, Shirley – you gave us many moments of joy! LOVED, LOVED, LOVED the beautiful quilt! Travel safe…sending love and hugs from the warm coast of Southern California to the blustery seas of the Atlantic!

  44. Sylvia in Seattle says:

You got to meet both Shirley Temple AND the Beatles!!!! Bookends to some fabulous growing up years I’d say. Loved the Shirley posting today which was so very nicely put together, and will enjoy all the links in a bit. Shirley was born 5 years before me, so her passing gives me A LOT to ponder. I’ll think about going to her movies with my parents as I drink my tea today and dredge up stuff from the old memory banks. Thanks for the close up of the lovely old quilt. Love all the old prints from the same time period. I’ve actually been quilting lately myself on a long neglected project. Yippee! So satisfying. You inspire me –so thanks.

Susan Branch appearing in Costco is not something I would have imagined, but what the heck. Folks living near by will be delighted I’m sure. Hope you have a fun time and take pictures to go with a full report. Safe travels! Keep warm and have a lovely Valentine’s Day.

    • sbranch says:

Not something I imagined either . . . but it’s “our” Costco, where we shop all the time, so I thought why not.

  45. Gloria L. Nugent says:

Thanks for the quilt picture & banner displays & especially the Shirley T tribute. When I was younger I met Patti Duke in hallway of pagent. This was when she had tv show. Got an autograph & was thrilled, of course! One of my list of lucky things. Another lucky thing is I was able to order some pear cider today! Have to wait for 2 weeks, but I am excited to try your cruise drink of choice. Happy V Day to you & the hunny bunny.

  46. A beautiful tribute to our sweet Shirley Temple Black. May she rest in peace. You cannot think of her and not smile. She was a treasure and her movies will continue to warm our hearts. Always looked on the bright side and ended happily ever after. I hope they play them this weekend in her memory so we can enjoy seeing her. I loved her dresses! The Spring and Bunny banners are 2die4. Oh Spring where art thou? Enjoy your Valentine Day with your Sweetie.

  47. Patty Lucas says:

My Mom introduced our oldest son to Shirley Temple movies. One day he kept asking me to watch a movie but he kept saying you know Grandma’s friend Shirley.

  48. chris (in Florida) says:

It just isn’t possible to choose a favorite ‘Shirley Temple’ anything. My childhood was full of her songs and movies but my sister got the Shirley Temple doll!!! My little girl watched her movies on tv as well but when her 3 girls were little I bought them and we spent hours singing with Shirley. Memories are a big part of love.

A windy, choppy ferry ride won’t keep you and Joe from having a loverly Valentine’s Day and rain won’t keep us from it, either. Enjoy your trip!

  49. shirley burt says:

Thank you Susan for your heartfelt tribute for Shirley Temple. What an icon.
Be careful on your travels. You and Joe be safe and enjoy your Costco crowd, I have no doubt there will be. Surely, they will let you do a little special treat shopping.
The banners, how lucky we are to have such a creative soul share. Must order them as soon as available.
And you, finishing the calenders and your creative spark ready to ignite and we will be the lucky ones, looking forward to another treasure to touch, read and absorb in our very souls. Thank you, Susan for thinking of your girlfriends. We love you.
    Love and bunny hugs, Shirley

  50. Debbie S., IL says:

One of my favorite books as a child was “Heidi” and when I saw it brought to life by Shirley Temple it was like magic to me. What a treasure she was, able to bring so much joy just by being herself! She was truly an “American Valentine” and I do hope a new generation will discover her movies and feel the same magic we all felt. Safe travels, Sue & Joe and Happy Valentine’s Day!

  51. Karen Saunders says:

So glad you and Joe are taking time to have a romantic moment. Makes me feel good. People become so busy with their lives nowadays they forget to take time for the things that really matter….your relationship. AND if you can do it as busy as you are……well there’s no excuse. Have a wonderful time….you both deserve it of course!! oh…and I LOVE the snow picture of your arbor. I could look at that all day long. I know people are tired of snow but I so love it.

  52. Lisa R (northern Az) says:

Such a sweet tribute to Shirley, Susan…..we have lots of little granddaughters who love her so! …..Have fun in old Cape Cod. Looks like you will be having a wonderful Valentine’s Day!

  53. Heather L. says:

My mom made sure we grew up watching Shirley Temple movies and hearing how my mom loved them when she was young! I was sorry to hear she passed away. I must find some oldies to introduce my girls to….

I hope your new book will have something about tea in it!!! Can’t wait to hear about it whatever the topics….

  54. Sue Rideout from Maine says:

Oh Susan, hard day today. We lost my dad on Jan 27 and then my mom on Feb 1. They had been together for 63 years and I guess mom just didn’t want to be without dad. Today would have been my dad’s 85 birthday (mom was 90) so we are celebrating with one of his favorites, pecan pie. Thank you so much for your advice on celebrating our last Christmas together. So many wonderful memories….
Getting ready for the storm that is coming our way. Planning to spend tomorrow sewing some doll dresses if we don’t lose power.

    • sbranch says:

OH no, Sue, I’m so very sorry. What a sad time for you. Oh the memories of them and how they went together. Very heartbreaking. Love that you are celebrating with the things they love. Happy Birthday dear dad . . . Doll dresses .. xoxo

      • Janet in Rochester says:

Much sympathy, Sue. What a hard thing to cope with! We lost our father & mother without 16 months of each other – they didn’t want to be apart either I guess – and we thought that was awful. Can’t imagine what you’re experiencing. Many virtual hugs. Many real prayers. xoxo

        • Diana - Highland, IL says:

Oh Sue, please accept my condolences on your loss of your parents. I hope you have wonderful memories to cherish, but it is still so hard to let go. Blessings to you and yours and I am wishing/hoping you have loved ones close to you to share this time with. God Bless.

        • sondra fox says:

Sue Rideout, My heart cries for you. So sad losing both parents at the same time. One person in a couple passes, then the other one, which is amazes me. I’ve heard of this happening so many times. Glad you’re going on to do other things. That will cheer you. (Sandy from Chihuahua Flats)

          • Sue Rideout from Maine says:

Susan, Janet, Diana and Sondra. Thank you so much for your kind words and prayers. It amazes me that even though we don’t “know” each other you took the time to reach out to me. Yes, I have many family and friends who have been supporting my family. With God’s help, we will get through this and see happier days.

  55. Wendy Louise says:

Oh My Goodness ! I just love that you did a post dedicated to a most wonderful person ! I grew up with Shirley Temple and I raised my children with her and I will be sharing her with my grand-daughters now and if I have grandsons some day they too will know her,my boys loved her too. I have a collection of most of her movies, I still watch them with delight ! My sister and I always sang her song helping our Mom do housework too. That is so awesome that you met her, I would have froze in place. My mother in-law gave my daughter a porcelain doll of Shirley and it is a treasure ! My Mom used to put the sponge curlers in my hair to get the Curley Top look and I did it with my daughter. I wonder if I will do it with my grand-daughters, one is 7 months old and the other is due on April 1st,Ha ! We will have to wait and see. This Saturday I am giving a Luncheon-Tea Party Baby Shower for my daughter in-law and if I wasn’t you bet I would be at Costco to see you ! I’m not to far away ! I wish you lots of fun and happiness this Valentines weekend, Love is in the Air for sure ! OXOX

  56. Tina Mandeville says:

    Susan,
Such sweet sentiments about Shirley! My Mom loved her and she shared her with me. She really was so precious…..so much talent and was so unafraid, even at such a young age. I began dance class when I was very young….you can only imagine my Mother’s delight when my first stage performance was dancing to “On the Goodship Lollipop”! 🙂 Lots of sweet memories. I hope Shirley left this earth knowing she brought such delight to others.
Wishing you and Joe a wonderful Valentine weekend! Glad to hear you will be staying Capeside tomorrow and not venturing into Boston as you might have planned. We are sure in for some more messy weather. Spring can’t come fast enough!
Oh and before I say good-bye……I live in a quaint rural town…..our neighborhood is very picturesque with rolling hills, tracks for the railways that run through (Oh how I love to hear that whistle blow in the distance, especially at night! 🙂 …beautiful homes. It is very Robert Kincaidish! 🙂 So lovely in all seasons….but the reason I share this is because coming into where we are is a farmhouse with many acres and they raise sheep! I think of you always now as we pass them everyday. I will have to take a photo sometime to share. There are also range areas for horses, etc. Just love it! 🙂

    • sbranch says:

Sounds gorgeous. You are so lucky to live where you can hear the train! Must be beautiful there. Where are you?

      • Tina Mandeville says:

Susan, I live in Charlton, MA – that is exactly 2 hours from my other favorite place on earth, Cape Cod! We are an hour west of Boston, but you know where we are, you drive by us on the Pike when travelling west! We live right next to Sturbridge, MA and 20 minutes from Brimfield, MA and just miles from the CT state border…and I KNOW you know where all those places are! 🙂 I love when you share your travels to this corner of the world. It truly is a lovely area of New England to live – so rich with heritage! Oh, and joy oh joy! I have found the sheep farm website link: signalrockfarmlamb.com/index.html
So, here, go check it out….see that photo on the home page, that is the daily view in my comings and goings! Toggle the other headers and there are more photos! You can see road we travel in some shots and in one of the photos, you can even see houses in the distance. That is the nestle of homes where I live. It is so picturesque and quaint! Its been a great place to raise our family! So…..have I made you officially jealous now?! I sure hope so because you live in a home by the sea in my other favorite place on earth, so that would make us even! 🙂
P.S. FYI – Many new antique shops have sprouted in Sturbridge over the past year! So fun!!!!
P.P.S. When you go/do Brimfield, do you try to do all of it or is there a section you just narrow in on when you go? I have yet to master that! There is just so much it can be rather overwhelming! But I love it and have many treasures from!

        • sbranch says:

Yes, we are even on jealousy! You live in a gorgeous place! There are booths I go to every time when I’m at Brimfield, but there is no section I can imagine liking more than another because they’re all so good and who wants to miss anything. I always go to that one that’s right on the road with all the dishes. They’re too expensive and I hardly ever buy one, but I am drawn like a moth to a flame.

  57. Jan says:

    Susan,
I immediately thought of you when I saw last night on the evening news that Shirley Temple Black had died. I, too, used to watch her movies growing up. She was just so delightful. Will have to introduce her to my grandchildren. Love your quilt! I really like quilts. I have one I made with my grandmother when I was 13. We did it all by hand on a wooden quilt rack my grandfather had made from tree limbs. It was called Dresden Plate. CUTE Spring banners! Happy Valentines Day to you and Joe. Enjoy your time away!
    Jan

    • sbranch says:

Your grandmother introduced you to quilting, and now you introduce your grandchildren to things. And the beat goes on!

      • Jan says:

        Yes! So thankful I can.

        • sondra fox says:

Jan, I LOVE your quilting story. I’m a quilter as well. There are so many quilt stories on Susan’s blog, that I’m going to write them all down in my quilt diary, where I write all the things that I do, or have done, quilt shows I’ve attended, & so forth. Your quilt story is the one of best I’ve heard, as I think grandchildren are our treasures. (Sandy from Chihuahua Flats)

  58. Anne says:

I just saw “Bright Eyes” for the first time. It was on TCM a few weeks back. OMG – what a living doll she was! Playing an orphan and hiding the little doggie in her bed! She was so adorable 🙂 I see why she cheered up everyone during the Depression. She made me happy and I wasn’t even sad. Have fun on your Valentine weekend! Xoxox

  59. Ann Y in PA says:

What a beautiful tribute to Shirley Temple…and how fortunate you were to meet her. Adorable as a child and then as an adult she always seemed so poised and gracious. Last night we popped our dvd of The Little Princess in and enjoyed her charm….just tear up and love when Queen Victoria goes by and she salutes and says “My Daddy”! Rest in peace, Shirley…and know that we will share your magic with the future.

  60. Carol (Daisy) says:

A lovely post about a lovely little girl and lady. I like your comment “flinging spring right into the snow’s face!” That’s the first thing I am going to do when/if we finally get a taste of spring in S.E. Wisconsin! I hope you have a wonderful Valentine weekend trip. I did have to look up what ‘sea bands’ are. Used for travel or early pregnancy nausea!! I think you are a special Valentine to all of us girlfriends!

    • sbranch says:

I used them on the ship to England. Too late really, because I got a little bit seasick. They really work! They have a little button in them that presses into a point on your wrist that stops seasickness. Or at least they work for me.

  61. Mary K. says:

Hello Susan! Thank you for this wonderful post. The first thing I ever saw Shirley Temple in was the movie “Since You Went Away”. She was a teen then, and it was such a wonderful movie. Thank you for your tribute to her here. <3 … Quick question: Do you still receive snail mail? I remember a long time ago you put a Martha's Vineyard P.O. Box address in the back of one of your books. I've also seen a California P.O. Box address in the back of another later book. (I wrote to you once a very long time ago to the MV address and you kindly wrote back to me!). Thanks, Mary K.

  62. Patsy in Nixa, MO says:

About that next book – if you started now, Spring could be finished by Christmas, which would make a nice gift. One for me, one for my niece, one for Katie, one for Bev, etc. etc.

If not Spring, then how about a trip? Do I hear it for France?

  63. connie says:

I can’t wait for the Sheep and Bunny garlands! Have a wonderful Valentine trip with your Honey Bunny!

    Connie

  64. Pamela C Betz says:

Dear Susan–Thank you, I was thrilled to see the Grandmothers Flower Garden quilt. I have made 2, but not with the white center and same fabrics all around. I really like it and plan to make a similar one . I have 11 “Grands” and they love getting my quilts.
    Happy Valentine’s Day

    • sbranch says:

      I bet they do Pamela!

      • Elaine in Toronto says:

My mom was quilter, too, and she did beautiful work. She and a dear friend were quilting on a wooden quilting frame set up in the living when a fire broke out. They lived on a farm and soon the neighbours rallied round and helped carry furniture outside before the fire trucks came. One man actually snapped the wooden quilting frames in half along the long edge to get them out quickly and save the quilt. The house had to be gutted and rebuilt inside but the cement block outside survived. My parents were in their seventies when this happened but they rebuilt and were so grateful that no one was hurt. My mom did finish the quilt. It has quite the story to tell. She made quilts for her three children, three grandchildren and five
        greatgrandchildren. Wonderful treasures to have.

  65. I watched Shirley Temple so much when I was a kid I wanted to tap dance just like her. I probably scratched up my mothers wood floors a lot trying to do those moves. I have three daughters but my youngest always loved to watch those movies with me and even dressed like and wrote a report about her when she was in grade school. She now has two daughters that like to watch her movies with her.
    The quilt is beautiful!

  66. Beth says:

    SHIRLEY AND SUSIE!!!
Girls and curls! Dimples and sparkles! Bows and songs!
I can just picture two little girls enraptured with the Hollywood Star…heels and a suit! (when’s the LAST time YOU wore high heels and a suit!!!??)
And THEN….Then, “She bent over to us to say hello.”
That says volumes of her true character aside from her cherished “image”…
SHE BENT DOWN…she acknowledged you, engaged you! She moved toward you!
None of which she needed to do unseen away from the cameras…
This was her lovely self reaching out to two young fans!
    An authentic kindness…
A quick moment in time with a lasting effect on all of us! Apart from stardom!
May we all be as kind and humble in our “unnoticed lives”….That’s a TRUE STAR!

Watch out for adoring young fans at Costco, Susan!! hahaha! Have FUN!

    • sbranch says:

I know, she was almost the one who stopped us. We’d been whispered to that she was there so we were already big eyed and had gone into shock … and I think she didn’t expect to see children there, so it was sweet for her to take that time and it all seemed so normal.

  67. Cyndi in NC says:

I have a Grandmother’s Flower Garden quilt that my great grandmother made. I’m 60 so that is an old quilt. *L* I love it and several years ago my mother gave it to me along with several others. I remember my Mom had that quilt on her bed when we lived in Virginia in 1970. The colors are still just as bright as then. *S*

  68. Susan in SC says:

Have loved reading all the Shirley Temple memories both here and on your fb page. I love that so many of us share the same memories and have such similar life experiences. My favorite Shirley Temple memory is the song “When I Grow Up, ” from the movie “Curly Top.” Looking back on the lyrics now, they read like an outline of my life: love to bake pies, became a teacher, had a beautiful wedding dress and will probably enjoy “rocking” in a few more years . . . but I never made it to a ball. 🙂 she certainly was a gift to all of us.
I’m hoping for a Spring book, as another girlfriend mentioned. I imagine there is a treasure trove of springy-things ticked away that you could share with us. That’s my vote, but I know whatever theme you decide on, the book will be charming.
Good luck on the boat! Sounds like rough seas ahead. Yikes!

    • sbranch says:

I would LOVE to write a spring book. I feel very inspired right now!

      • judy says:

I’m voting for a lovely Spring book. I have all of your books and enjoy putting each season on my bedside table for inspiration. We need something specifically for this time of year–looking forward to a beautiful new season (through your eyes and paints!) Spring cleaning, gardening, Spring cooking (with Spring veggies), shopping yard sales and flea mkts., prepping the pantry for the extra veggies, cooking for the freezer, airing quilts and rugs, laundering heirlooms, etc. It will be a HUGE book! Thanks, Judy in Nashville

  69. Debbie says:

I think I’ve seen all the Shirley Temple movies and still love all of them. Our Girl Scout troop put on a variety show and my piece was to sing “On the Good Ship Lollipop” dressed as Shirley Temple. I remember being very nervous, but all went well. The most difficult part was for my poor Mother when she tried to put a curl in my poker straight hair!
    I love the Spring garlands!

  70. You two be safe out there! The storm from the south hit us today, snowing all day, tonight and tomorrow through early afternoon, then more late Friday! It’s beautiful! We’re not going anywhere! I LOVE hunkering in! Going to make your blueberry cornbread pancakes tomorrow if I can find the recipe!
    Hugs, and Happy Valentines Day!

    Jeannie

  71. Jack says:

Susan — I highly recommend that you and Joe postpone this trip off Island. First – with the high winds with this storm …. the Ferry will have to shut down just when you will be wanting to get back home. Second – they are showing the roads empty in Alabama and the Carolinas — people are staying home, off those ice-caked roads. This would indicate a poor turnout at your book signing at Costco, so why be there all alone? Also driving from Woods Hole to Costco, will be extremely hazardous — not worth the danger involved on those icy roads — no sense messing up that nice van. So you best wait out the storm right where you are! Stock up on firewood and Twine, plenty of time for signings later on.

I remember when you got Shirley Temple’s autograph when we lived on Park Ave in Reseda, Calif, years before you snuck up on the Beatles — as I remember you met Arthur Treacher that night, too. Then you were off to meet Tarzan down in Mexico. What is it with you anyhow?

Do you Girlfriends remember the English guy who always played the Butler — Arthur Treacher? He was perfect for that part.

    • sbranch says:

I loved him! He played such a great butler! He was the guy married to the Russian Ballerina whose yard we needed to go through to get to the house with the Beatles in it. We had stopped to ask if we could go up their brick steps and through their garden and his wife had come out and was so sweet and was saying yes you can in her Russian accent, but at the last minute she said, “we should probably ask my husband.” And out from the back of the house looms the tall and craggy English actor Arthur Treacher! He takes one look at us 17-year-old teenagers, looked down that big nose and says in a gravel voice of doom, “Oh noooo, I don’t think so…” Then he turns, large and intimidating and recedes back into the house with big eyes boring into his back and peanut brains scrambling to think of a way around this.

The Russian Ballerina, still very beautiful and erect in her 70’s (or something like that — she was probably only 35 but to us she was ancient and he was a hundred and sixty-five) saw our crestfallen faces and said, “Oh Girls, he didn’t mean that ~ go ahead.” Could have Kissed her, but in reality we probably almost blew her over with the wind we made running past her and up those steps! She doesn’t know it, but she was our fairy godmother that night, holding the keys to the castle and the future of our memories.

We canceled our trip today, FYI and are watching closely as to whether we go tomorrow. xoxo Daddio!!

      • This part of the story is just as interesting as the Beatles part! I’m glad you decided to stay put, although it must have been a hard decision….you have plenty of other “stories” you can tell, you don’t need one more!

I love that your Dad is still giving you advice….he must be feeling pleased as punch that you’re following his advice, even though you made your decision without his help. 🙂 Us parents always love that little voice inside us when it can say, “See! I was right!” (because we’d never say it out loud!)

        • sbranch says:

My dad is brilliant! I always listen to him. Maybe I’m not smart enough to do everything he says, but I always listen!

          • mary spring says:

…good advice that your father gave you and glad you are able to stay put at home !..alas, Providence and Westerly (and that whole area) is under a winter storm warning right now !..even tho I’m sure your “map man” could do alright in it; still better to play safely..

          • Donna Klein says:

I LOVE that your dad chimed in with his wisdom and it brought up a whole new story 🙂
            Made my day!

          • carmel says:

I’m so glad you cancelled that trip. I couldn’t imagine it being safe. And Jack, I was not only relieved to see your message about the book signing (I was worried too) but loved the fun memories. Susan, thanks for the Shirley Temple tribute. You’re certainly right about how she represented goodness and how that eventually overcomes the bad. “Captain January” is one of my very favorites of her movies. Thanks for posting that wonderful number w/ Buddy Ebsen. I do remember Authur Treacher. Wasn’t he also a “sidekick” for the Merv Griffin Show?Whatever book you write and whenever it’s published, I’ll love it as I have all of yours. No rush as we know you must enjoy all the big and little things in life in between writing and illustrating. Take care everyone.

          • sbranch says:

Yes ma’am, life is for living!

        • sondra fox says:

What a wonderful, amusing story!!!! Arthur Treacher was a marvelous actor, & yes, I was remembering him on a TV show, but couldn’t remember who hosted the show. YES, it was Merv Griffith! He was Merv’s sidekick. He had this wonderfully funny, snobby attitude. Merv got a kick out of Arthur’s humor. Susan, you are so very lucky to have a father that loves you that much.(Sandy from Chihuahua Flats)

  72. martha says:

Spring book, please?? I would love love love to have one for every season! When it is the midst of winter, I pull out my “Summer” book, tuck in bed with kitties and tea and dream of sunshine and wearing only ONE layer of clothes.

In NC we are having a terrific snowstorm! It is beautiful beyond all words and, because I have no neighbors for several miles and am the only house on this end of the road, no tire tracks At All. The lane is like a fairyland.

And, we are having baby goats. I came home today from work just in time to find one Just Born on the ground (instead of the stall, silly Momma!). I tucked him in my jacket to warm and dry him. He has been christened “Chillie.”

Have fun on old Cape Cod!

  73. Carol Ann says:

My mother and grandmother introduced my sister and me to Shirley Temple and I smile when her name is mentioned. Last year I found a scrapbook my mom (who will be 89 on your birthday) made of Shirley when she was probably around 9 years old. She had cut out any newspaper picture or movie ad that was in the newspaper and made the scrapbook. I got it out yesterday and mom and I sat and went through it together. What a special memory.

  74. Joanna Lyn says:

Please do a Spring book, like the Summer and Autumn ones, and then a Winter book. Same size, to match the others. I have all your cook books and would love those 2 to add to my collection. 🙂

  75. Kathie says:

Please have a lovely, careful, journey, Valentine’s Day, etc. Our weather is frightful, too. The old earth is trying to change her seasons, isn’t she? It’s time to put on a new dress…..

  76. RIP Shirley . You were truly one of the greats!
I imagine her tapping with Mr Bo Jangles and the joy continues….

    P.S.
    Recommend;
The chocolate croissants at Trader Joes
Put them out before you go to bed to rise and bake them in the morning.

  77. Sheila Weakley says:

So many things to comment on, but it’s late, so I’m going to be short & sweet-just have to share! When I come to your website to read your blog (because it shows up better on my cranky old phone!) usually I am just about finished reading when that cute little birdy “tweet-tweets” across the top of the page, and without fail, my little kitty-boy Chester (if he is within hearing range) will pop out of wherever he is hiding and look at me, as if to say, “Where do you have that bird, Mom??” It’s hilarious, and I laugh, every time!! Love the happy kitty snoozing on top of that beautiful quilt, too! Safe travels to you, wish I could be at Costco too!

  78. Lisa Jorgensen says:

I knew you would be thinking about Shirley. How wonderful how many lives she touched and how many happy childhood memories she left us. The songs from the movies made us so happy too. We were blessed to grow up in a much more simple time. My favorite is “The Little Princess”, when she finds her father. She seemed to never have a mother and father and yet they always had a happy ending. “Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm” and “Poor Little Rich Girl” are my other favorites.
Have a very fun, safe trip, and a lovely Valentine’s Day!! XOXO

  79. Marian McKeehan says:

Happy Valentine’s Day to you and Joe. Can’t wait to hear about your new book!

  80. evangeline says:

Enjoyed the post today…or tomorrow as it is now past midnight. I loved being reminded of Shirley Temple…what a delight it is to watch her old movies. My mom, Shirley, was named after her. I hope your weekend is filled with lovely memories…can’t wait to hear about your next adventure… ! Happy Valentines day. Happy book signing too…evangeline

  81. After reading about those Costco frozen eclairs, I am wishing I had a membership to Costco! I’ll have to find a friend who has I guess!

I have always adored Shirley Temple. I will never ever in my mind see Heidi as looking like anyone other than Shirley Temple. I loved all her films when I was a girl and watched them as often as I could. When I grew up and had my own girls, a favourite “Girlie” activity was watching Shirley Temple films together. Happy memories. She was a special child and a very special woman. If you can end this life having blessed the lives of others in some way you have lived a very special life. She blessed so many with her talents and her inspirational example. She was a treasure.

  82. Kathy Thompson (in Rialto CA) says:

Hi Susan: What a lovely tribute to Shirley Temple. My Mom told me years ago that my older sister, Annie, used to walk down the sidewalk with her stroller and sing, “Little Shirley Temple…coming down the road.” Too cute. What sweet memories she has created for so many of us. You were right. We lost a national treasure! For your new book…I still say, “Spring Has Sprung…from the Heart of the Home.” Infinite possibilities for our domesticity cities. Happy Valentine’s Day. Kathy T.

  83. Sylvia in Seattle says:

You met Arthur Treacher too!!! Lucky. — I’m really glad you cancelled driving for the day at least. The weather news out of the East seems quite treacherous. Hope it clears up in time for your Costco appearance. We actually had one day of snow in rainy Seattle last weekend. It was beautiful while it lasted :-). I stayed up into the wee hours just staring at the trees frosted and sifted with white stuff. A real treat for us “moss backs” especially that it happened on Saturday night and most folks didn’t HAVE to drive in it.

  84. judi says:

LOVED the picture of the sun shining on the fresh snow – such beauty from nature.

Hoping your signing at Costco is rescheduled. You have worked so hard on AFR and it is the perfect book for a special gift. I think you should continue to promote it often for the next 6 months – (and forever, of course)!!! I tv appearence in Boston would be nice too:) You deserve a T.O. from writing for a while. Would love to see you & Joe cooking up a storm in your kitchen again and all your creative entertaining ideas. xoxo

    • sbranch says:

The writing is my favorite to tell you the truth — that alone and quiet time is what I love. But I know it’s right to go out, and I also love meeting the Girlfriends. Once again, so tragic, no clone! 😉

  85. Pamela Jo says:

Thank you so much for your tribute to Shirley Temple, Susan. She has always been a favorite here. My nana named my mom Shirley because she enjoyed her films so much. My mom has always enjoyed her name and has quite a nice collection of Shirley Temple collectibles…dolls, glassware, etc.

I also enjoyed the little bit of Spring in your post! Can’t wait for it’s arrival! We are in the middle of yet another winter storm here in Bucks County, PA today! I know the storm is causing problems for many along the east coast. Hoping all goes well for everyone who is having to deal with all of this white stuff!

  86. Asha says:

Oh Susan! Thank you so much for the tribute to Shirley. I can’t imagine her at 85. I will always remember her as the dancing, singing blonde curly haired Shirley Temple. My idol as a child! On another note, Trader Joe’s has an absolutely wonderful corn bread mix. Comes in a box. I know, I know, it’s not scratch but you will LOVE the texture & taste. You add an egg, milk & oil. Great quick bread to go with your chili or for a breakfast brunch. Can’t wait for the lamb & bunny banners! I have all the rest. My BEST collection! Love ya!

    • sbranch says:

I love the recommendations from Trader Joe’s — I’ve never had anything there that wasn’t good, but I get stuck in my ways getting the same old things, so thank you!

      • Holly says:

Trader Joe’s has great sparkling pomegranate juice (other flavors too). Their granulated garlic is the best, much better than a garlic powder. When I lived on the west coast their cottage cheese came from Alta Dena Dairy, but not here in the Midwest. There isn’t anything that compares here!

        • sbranch says:

I used to love Knudsen cottage cheese in the yellow container … it was much dryer than the kind they make today, you could use an ice cream scoop on it and it would stick together in a ball and not leak milk … it made the nicest creamy noise too. But I can’t find it anywhere these days.

  87. Jeannine from SC says:

So wonderful that you were able to meet Shirley . . . and Arthur, too! Anyone else??? Love hearing about such ‘serendipitous’ acquaintances. Though most of us don’t have the opportunity to meet some of our favorite celebs, it’s always fun to meet them through a friend’s eyes. Recently had a chance to meet with Johnny Mann at one of our elderfolk (The Hilltoppers) church gatherings, and he brought with him slides of lots of the celebs he met along his life journey which included Joey Bishop, George Goeble, Regis Philbin, and a host of others, even including president Nixon. Johnny and his wife now live nearby, so it was a treat to see and hear all the wonderful stories he had to tell of his early days in the limelight. Thanks for sharing your stories, too. So uplifting for many of us.

I had a boyfriend who was the wild animal trainer for the Tarzan show on TV … that was a whole adventure full of excitement, elephants, tigers, and baby lions too, not to mention Boy and Cheetah.

  88. Candice says:

My mother saw Shirley and Buddy Ebsen filming that dance sequence from Captain January in person. She and her playmates were out riding bikes and came across the production. They were peeking through a wood fence watching whole Shirley and Buddy danced!

  89. Kerry S. from San Pedro, CA says:

Congratulations on completing all the calendars! Can’t wait to see the new blotter!
So sad to say “good bye” to Miss Temple! All our touchstones from the past are leaving us! I guess that’s life but it’s still hard! Makes our current friends all the more precious to us!
Have a safe journey and a wonderful Valentine’s adventure!
    Cheers!
    🙂

  90. Mary of Pa. says:

hello Susan, Shirley Temple what a gift she was! I to will be singing her songs for a long time. Our granddaughter is two, Ken and I will introduce her to Shirley’s movies, and many others. Another favorite of mine is “Anne of Green Gables.” Your, grandmother’s flower garden quilt is beautiful. I’am binding a quilt now that I just finished in earth tones. Have a nice Valentines Day with your sweetheart and be safe in this weather.

  91. Lori Montgomery says:

Good-bye Shirley Temple. She was the prettiest little girl. I love the Grandmother’s Flower Garden quilt. Beautiful!

  92. Frances Fowler says:

I wonder if Shirley were not Buddy Ebsen’s favorite dancing partner ever! Loved these videos. My, her intelligence and talent were astounding even when she was little more than a baby (and I can just imagine someone reminding Shirley to “shake her head” during her Baby Take a Bow routine!). I was reminded of how very smart she was when I saw a black and white picture of her taken as an ambassador, earphones on for translation, with eyes that reflected she missed nothing. Happy Valentine’s day, your favorite holiday, to you and your love 🙂 I think people everywhere are getting spring fever!

  93. sondra fox says:

Hi There………Loved all the happy words about Shirley Temple. What a memory that child must have had, to remember all of those dance routines. I loved her pouty face, which would turn any decent human being into a blob that would do anything she asked for. I’m so glad she had a wonderful life, full of family & duty to country. We will love you Shirley forever & always.

The Grandmother’s Flower Garden quilt is one that I hopefully will make before I meet my Creator. One of my favorites. I know you cherish yours Susan.

I will be concerned (not worried) until you return from your little trip, knowing the weather’s so horrible. I won’t’ worry, as I trust that you & Joe know how to take care of yourselves. I’ll just be concerned about the weather & you two being out in it. I won’t tell you what the weather’s like here in CA.

Happy, safe journey. (Sandy from Chihuahua Flats)

    • sbranch says:

We’re being careful. I have the chicken gene in me which keeps both me and Joe (who seems to have the wild wolf gene) safe.

      • mary spring says:

… the “chicken gene” and the “wild wolf gene”.. so funny and fun !!.. I believe in you two that no matter where you two end up, you both will be quite well and very happy !!….

  94. Gina P. from NY says:

Susan: Shirley Temple was adorable. Adorable her entire life. Here is someone who never went through an “awkward” stage. She was beautiful as a child, as a teenager, and as an adult. I thought she was so pretty in the “Bachelor and the Bobby Soxer”, and also in the movie, “Since You Went Away”. Between Claudette Colbert, Jennifer Jones, and Shirley, beautiful, lovely women were certainly represented! My two favorite movies of hers were “Heidi” and “The Little Princess”. I always hoped that at the end of “The Little Princess”, where she finally finds her “Daddy”, that they would go back to the school and scoop up “Becky”, adopt her, and live happily ever after!

It is snowing here again today. We are supposed to get 8 to 14 inches! Yikes! Where will we put all this white stuff! I have to tell you that yesterday, when I was driving home, I passed a local church. I glanced at the sign in front of the church, which is always lit at night, with an inspirational message, or the times of their services, but yesterday, the sign read like this: “WHOEVER IS PRAYING FOR MORE SNOW – PLEASE STOP!” Isn’t that great? Happy Valentines Day to you and Joe!

  95. Tisa @ Seattle Retro says:

Can’t imagine a world without Shirley Temple in it, she’s been in my consciousness my entire life! Your posted photo looked a little more like Shirley today than Princess Leia 🙂 Have fun at Costco, I’ll email them & ask for your book to appear in Seattle too, why should we be shortchanged! (I’ll cite alllllll the girlfriends too, in case it adds persuasion….)

  96. Wendy says:

Old Cape Cod – that sounds like a perfect place to celebrate Valentine’s Day!
Our church is having a dealio where you bring your kid to church and they have games and movies and pizza for them….$5 for three hours….and hubby and I will find somewhere to go on a DATE! This does not happen nearly often enough. We get to have a Valentine’s DATE!

  97. Joy Pence from Ohio says:

I loved Shirley Temple too. I would “tap dance” in the living room right along with her. Never mind that I couldn’t dance a lick. In my little world I was right there with her! She was so, so pretty. Speaking of books, during your book signing, you mentioned bringing he Autiumn book back into print, is that still something we can look forward to? Hope you and your hunny bunny have a wonderfully romantic Valentines Day!

  98. Happy, happy Valentines Day to you and Joe, dear Susan!! I hope your voyage is calm and smooth so that you won’t even need those wrist-bands!

  99. Rosalina says:

Susan, thank you for remembering Shirley Temple. Those who grew up during the time when she was a big star will always be affected by her example. When I compare the “stars” that are so famous today it makes me so sad. It seems like they don’t have the slightest idea of how a proper young lady should behave, their terrible examples of behavior are the example that so many of our youth are following. Whither they like it or not with great fame comes great responsibility. And what’s happened to the “responsible” guidance from the adults in their lives that should be guiding them, I guess they are too afraid of being cut off from all the money they’re earning. These are things I’d been thinking about since I heard of her death. Thanks for letting me air these thoughts. Love your blog, have most of your books, have collected them for a long time.

  100. I am sure that many others have probably said: your picture sure looks a lot like Shirley Temple’s! A nice tribute and lovely upcoming products. A blogger (Lady Katherine’s Tea Party) has lots of new baby lambs – I asked her to send you pictures!
