WEARIN’ O’ THE GREEN

Of course our blog is wearing green today, it would not like to be pinched!  But I am now on my fourth try to write a new post!  The first three failed because important memories or perfect descriptions have been crashing into my best intentions demanding to be added to the new book before I forgot them.  I will try my best to stay focused here!  This will help . . . MUSICA made in heaven.  First a little something to make your mouth water . . .

susan-branch-irish-stew Happy Saint Patricks Day Everyone!    How’s it going for you so far?  I don’t know if you have a special something you like to make in honor of the day, but this ↑ is our favorite recipe for stew.  It’s very different, it has raisins!  Irish BlessingAnd orange juice!  And cayenne!  And nutmeg of all things!  That’s because I got my hands on it, and thought, those creative Irish, they would forgive me for messing around with their stew.  Yummy, egg noodles, with butter.  Yes.

I know, it says Irish and the only potato is a sweet potato and there’s no Guinness but I would wager you (and that is Irish) that the flavor of this stew will make you jump up to do your own version of  Riverdance, from happiness.

For more wonderful Irish things that don’t make total sense to us go HERE and laugh.  And HERE, for a wee taste o’ some things that make Ireland so wonderful.  And here’s to a day of love and blessed luck for you all! ♣

jack in the basket

Had to show you Jack this morning!  He is in a very feisty mood.  Jack is never in any danger of getting pinched on St. Patricks Day because . . .

jackie

. . . he brings his green with him wherever he goes, he is always Wearin’ the Green.

JackHe knows what the camera is now, because he makes me chase him around and he rarely holds still anymore . . .

JackI get the camera and he begins to jump about or roll around so it’s difficult to focus on him.  I have to take LOTS of pictures before I can get one that isn’t totally blurred into oblivion . . . It’s those green eyes I love so much.

IMG_3930He gets bored with me very quickly though . . . Get that thing out of my face, he yawns  . . . (and please, WOMAN, stop kissing me, I am BEGGING you.  You’re messing with my DIGNITY.)

Bye Bye

Or else I will just leave.  Very spoiled, very sure of himself.

Gladys TaberSo I say, OK, be that way, and go into the kitchen to get my newest Gladys Taber Newsletter to show you.  I wanted you to remember that third thing down, in case you’re interested, and remind you to make your plans because I would love to see you there.

Jack 'n GladysI was trying to show you the article in the Newsletter about the Reunion where I will be speaking and signing copies of A Fine Romance, but of course the minute I don’t pay 100% attention to him, he is back.  Now he wants to play!  I take it any way I can get it.  Whatever Lola wants, Lola gets . . .Stillmeadow

And Lola wants to drape himself on just the parts I would like you to see . . .

Friends of Gladys TaberI hope lots of you are already a member of the Friends of Gladys Taber?  She has been one of my favorite authors for a long time.  The quarterly newsletters are always delightful, interesting, informative, fun and evocative,  I save them … ↑ here are a few of them from years past.  If you’d like to read more about Gladys Taber, find out how to become a member of her fan club, or get better information about the Reunion in June (and tour her house Stillmeadow),  I did a post about her HERE and put the dates and times at the bottom.

Jack the display catI finally got the Newsletter out from under Lola and on top of him.  He took it rather well before he tore out of the room and up the back stairs.  Like a nut.

spring tea

Let’s see … oh yes, well!   I asked my little-old tea-leaves blender for something Cinnamony and Green for spring, and preferably Caffein Free and they sent me a few packets, some more cinnamony than the others, some more flowery, but I think they got it just right with this one . . . it has body and balanced flavor and smells wonderful . . .

spring tea

Only three more days until the first official day of spring.  Last night after dinner, I sat in front of the fire (because spring-schming around here is the real truth) with a cup of my new Spring Tea and read my Newsletter and I almost didn’t care that it was 28 degrees.  (Ridiculous.)

Spring!

I also made us some “Celebrating Spring” cards (2nd row from top) that can be used as Greetings cards for spring or Earth Day, as postcards or Easter Dinner invitations,  or even recipe cards — they’re lined on both sides,  are 4″ x 6″ on nice, heavy, uncoated card stock and come in sets of 25.  Happy Spring!

but not least

Best of Stillmeadow

Even if there is no spring (yet) at your house, I can’t tell you how lovely it is to read about a New England Springtime through the eyes and heart of Gladys Taber.  I think this is my favorite of her books, probably because it was my first, but also because it takes you through every month and each season of the year.  Especially good if you can’t make it to the Friends Reunion for Gladys Taber, this is a little

surprise!

because I am going to sign this lovely book to the lucky one of you whose name is drawn as the winner of this vintage copy (in almost brand new condition) of this out-of-print title published in 1976.  Oh yes!  I found it on a back shelf in a dark corner of a group antique mall on our trip across country and have saved it for today.  Just leave me a comment and you will be automatically entered.

pink

One Last Thing, almost a PS:  There are always lots of fun ways to celebrate St. Patrick’s day, delicious recipes, lots of parades, prayers at church, and bagpipe music; they even dye the Chicago River green.  But for those of you that would like a more sober look at a piece of Irish history, this lovely MUSICA is practically an Irish National Anthem.  There was a story this Sunday in the New York Times  … my girlfriend Lowely (Finnerty) from two doors over, brought some of her famous (still warm!) Irish Soda Bread to help Joe and I celebrate this morning.  We smeared it with butter and ate it while we prayerread the article and listened to the words of this song together.  Then we cried.  I felt like I wanted to add something meaningful to the celebration, so here you go ~ it’s history we never want to forget.  (Spoiler alert: I must say I don’t agree with those that would politicize this subject as was done with this article, just so you know. There is nothing political about hunger and the story is important; as my mom used to say, there is a difference between right and wrong.  I try and think about it the way St. Patrick would wish for me to do and toss in a bit of common sense for luck . We can’t change the past but as Oprah put it so perfectly, “We did then what we knew how to do; now that we know better, we do better.”)  Blessings to us all dearest Girlfriends. XOXO  (Don’t forget to leave your comment for Best of Stillmeadow!)

I can’t wait to make your version of Irish Stew – it sounds yummy! And my girlfriend Donna shared her recipe for Irish Soda Bread, so I’m all set! Happy St. Paddy’s Day, dear Susan & Joe!

  2. Marilena says:

Lovely post as usual. I was invited to go to the event for Gladys Taber but am unable to go 🙁 I am saving up to move back to New England instead 🙂 It would have been an awesome trip, especially since I have the same birthday as you Susan and Gladys Taber!

  3. Laura Croyle says:

Happy St. Patrick’s Day! I have mostly French and German in me, but my Dad used to say we have a smidgen of Scotch-Irish in us! I think it’s funny how we all want to be Irish on St. Patrick’s Day! I would love to go to Ireland some day….
Love the photos of your silly Jack with his pretty green eyes! What a character! You’ll never get bored with him around!
How exciting that you are coming up with more memories to write about in your new book! Sounds like it’s all flowing together wonderfully! Can hardly wait for this one, too!
I love Gladys Tabor, too, and discovered her just before you wrote about her on your blog a few years back. I was lucky enough to find a bunch of her books at a local used bookstore! I started out buying one at a time. They didn’t have this one you’re giving away, however. I would Love to win it to add to my collection. I’ll keep my fingers crossed!
We are having wild March weather: rain, wind and hail, but no snow like in other parts of the country. I think we’ll be able to hear the whole country sigh deeply when Spring finally arrives! Ahhhh…….
    Blessings,
    Laura

  4. Laura Ann in Vermont says:

Not sure spring will ever come. It was minus nine degrees here this morning. But your latest post definitely has made my day better!

  5. Anne Lovell says:

Happy St. Patrick’s Day! I hope it has gotten warmer for you, it’s sunny here but cold, at least it’s sunny! Thank you for the book giveaway opportunity!

  6. Donnie Kean says:

Now you’ve got me curious, need to learn more about Gladys Taber. The give away book sounds wonderful.

  7. Marcia Morse says:

Such a beautiful post to celebrate this day, Susan. I love the fun, Jack’s eyes and antics, the recipe, and the poignancy you bring us, as well, and most of all the Gladys Tabor book!! Thank you for always bringing such joy to my day.
Sure is a cold day over here on the elbow in Chatham today. The warmth is coming through soon!

  8. Becky in the mountains of West Virginia. says:

Have loved Gladys’s writings for years. Would be delighted to have the book. What a find you found!

  9. Jeanie Hans says:

Oops. I think I maybe wrote a response on the wrong page. If not..I don’t mean to write a double. Anyway, my corned beef is simmering and I have already peeled potatoes and a huge head of cabbage is awaiting the pot so the Irish stew will have to wait. It certainly looks yummy though! Have a Happy St Pats and give Jack a little pinch.

    • sbranch says:

Don’t worry, Vanna, our random number generator knows to choose from only one of each entry! xo

  13. Chris Wells Knickerbocker, W TX says:

Oh My, how could I not comment with a chance to win not just a book by Gladys Taber, but signed by you! You are the one who introduced me to Gladys!
I really had hoped to make my first Gladys Taber reunion this June and get to hear you speak, but my son and DIL need Grandma in July to sit with the grand kids while they go on a trip! How could I say no! So I will be flying to Ohio instead and hopefully taking my 91 year old mother with me! I think we are going to have a grand time!
    Happy St. Patricks Day girls!
    Chris

  14. Barbara Thomas says:

Oh Sue please enter me in your contest. You have converted me to a big fan of hers and I snap up as many of her books as I can, when I can! I have not read this one yet.
    Love today’s blog!
    Barbara

  15. Kathi Sanoba says:

I’ll be seeing you at the FOGT Reunion – can’t wait. I’ve stopped at Stillmeadow a couple of times over the years and kinda snuck around, not knowing if someone was there or not, but to actually get to be there “legally” will be a big thrill. Love Jack’s green eyes!

  16. Mary Eva Ross says:

Happy St. Patrick’s Day. Susan, do you happen to know what is green and sits outside in the rain? Patty O’Furniture! Hope you all have a GREAT day. No more Snow!

  17. Fran says:

At 6:30 this morning, we were shook awake by a little tembler. Not having had one in some time, it was quit a surprise. Nothing broken or off the shelves but what a way to start St. Patrick’s Day!
Loved the pictures of Jack. My tuxedo is definitely a cousin of Jack’s as he does many of the same things – likes to get in baskets, boxes, linens and anything else he deems interesting. He’s a character to be sure.
Thanks for the info about Gladys Tabor. I love her writing and would love to win the book.
As always, thanks for another great post! Always makes my day.

  18. Ann Waddell says:

    Dear Susan,

I love the pictures of Jack! I have a beautiful cat named Francesca, who is all black and tres elegant. She is almost 15 (this April), and she is the Audrey Hepburn of cats! Keep sharing Jack and Girl Kitty pictures, please!

    Warmly,
    Ann

  19. Tamar Time says:

That book looks like a gem. Nice!

  20. Suzie Wullschlager says:

I have found only one of Gladys Taber’s books (in an old book shoppe in Wisscaset , Maine)- it made my vacation! Being from California I dream of seasons. I would love to have “the Best of Stillmeadow”. Thank you always for your inspiration. Best- Suzie

  21. Tricia Neron says:

Happy St. Patrick’s to you and Joe. I am wearing my green today as this is my families tradition and I am passing it on to my 4 year old son. He went to pre-school today all dressed in St. Paddy’s day green. We are half Irish half Scottish, ooh, my Dad just turned over in his grave, he always told us we were 100% Irish. I didn’t find out I was half Scottish until I was in my late teens.

It’s 18′ here today, it feels like winter is never going to end. So a touch of spring from Glady’s Taber it’s just what the Doctor ordered. Bring on Spring.

    • sbranch says:

It’s good he doesn’t know! I was going to say by Irish Stew has a lot of Scotch broth in it! Because we are Stewarts and basically we cover the territory up there pretty good!

  22. Nancy Franson says:

i am 1/4 Irish, a McKeever Descendant from County Cork, Ireland. My Irish Nana was a lovely lady and she made such an imprint on my heart. Round and short, I remember her touch and voice. Now I am a Grammy with two grandchildren and another on the way (whoooopeee!!) and as I reflected on the warm memories of my own Nana it dawned on me that she poured into me during my first 7 years! RIght after my First Communion my Nana had a stroke and died shortly after that. It was a wake up call for me to how very important my time is with my little ones as we never know how much time we really have to love, bless, and influence their lives.

  23. Carol Reed says:

    Top O’ the Mornin’ Susan!
OHHH..how I would LOVE this book on Stillmeadow;I discovered Glady’s books as a new mom, 22 years ago!! MANY an afternoon was spent feeding and rocking my sweet boy to sleep, and then reading her wonderful tales.
She, and you, are a national treasure! xxoo, Carol

  24. Cheryl says:

Happy St. Patrick’s Day, dear Susan! You bring so much joy to my day with your lovely posts and inspiration.

  25. Nancy Beardsley says:

It’s green here in Oregon almost year round but especially so today!! Would love to read the Tabor book. Best wishes for EVERYDAY to you, Joe, Jack & Girl Kitty!! Nancy

  26. Marilyn the Nurse says:

Beautiful sentiment Susan as always. Happy Saint Patricks Day!!!!!

  27. Sylvia in Seattle says:

Jack – Aquellos Ojos Verdes – tra la — and now I have all sorts of songs popping up in my mind with Green in the lyrics 🙂 Well books are just about my favorite thing so I love having a chance of winning this lovely giveaway, but more important is that your “important memories and perfect descriptions” get down on the page. I like to think of you in “the zone” — that mysterious mode/mood when things are flowing freely from the Source — perhaps situated somewhere near the Irish in us 🙂 . Definitely thinking Green today.

  28. Robin Strong says:

Our daughters just returned from a wee tour of Ireland together. I’ve seen a few pictures…truly amazing…lovely stone relics in the midst of sheep and fuzzy cows. I hope to make it to the Emerald Isle myself someday.

I’m hoping our public library has some Gladys Tabor. Thanks for continuing to introduce new friends!

  29. Jeanette says:

    Susan,
Top of the afternoon to you!!! Hope you’re delighting in the festivities of the day, sounded like a wonderful start with Irish Soda Bread – yum!!!
Thanks for this most-generous opportunity!!! I’ve found a couple of Gladys’ books, not this one, though. 🙂 Always keep my eyes open when in an antique store and always ask just in case I missed it! 😉
Here’s to spring springing in a few days, fingers crossed. It sure doesn’t feel like it yet here in central IL as the wind chill was only 5 yesterday. Thankfully the sun is shining today and even though it’s still cold, feeling the warm rays of the sun is a gift!
    Sending warm hugs and thanks!
    Jeanette

  30. Sandy Barton says:

Happy St. Patrick’s Day. Spring will come….eventually.

  31. Valerie says:

Always happy to find a new blog posting! Love reading about the antics of cute little Jack! What a face!! We still have snow on the ground in Chicago! We’ll probably go from 18 to 80 overnight and skip Spring entirely!! Thanks for the ‘Spring-spriation’ and the give away!

  32. Darla B says:

I think I’ll try the Irish Stew, Yummy! And I love Jack’s green eyes!!!

  33. Sue Lamke says:

Loved Gladys Taber as a young girl as my Mother always had her books. Your entries make me feel refreshed and bring to mind lots of memories. Thanks

  34. Charlene says:

What a nice surprise this is, a chance to win a very nice book ! Thank you so very much! Baking some Irish bread now and had our corned beef last night when the clan could all be here. Enjoy this cold but sunny Saint Paddy’s Day ! My Irish eyes are smiling for sure.

  35. Simone says:

Love, Love, Love your blogs Susan and all your art and writings, oh and did I mention recipes? Thank you

  36. jeannine leonard says:

Happy St. Patty’s Day! The corn/beef and cabbage is slowly bubbling away on the stove, and the Irish Soda bread is already done. A little cold in our neck of the woods, but the sun is shining…

  37. Frances Fowler says:

Spring has sprung here in north Georgia, though today is chilly and rainy. If I were going to tour Stillmeadow, I would think I was blissfully dreaming. You must be so excited! It would be second — or perhaps tied — only with visiting Tasha Tudor’s Vermont home and gardens. But I gotta say that the picture of the Prime Kitty Feet draped across the paper (because if you are occupied with something and it can be sat upon in some fashion, it must be claimed, for this is feline rule) is my absolute favorite. Happy St. Patrick’s Day, even though I don’t think he swept through the Southeast and took our snakes with him :-/

  38. Grace says:

My father, a son of Irish immigrant mill workers, served in the US Army Air Corps in WW2 in Europe. He married my mother, a US army nurse in England, where they were stationed. Her grandparents had left Ireland during the famine. He became a well respected lawyer and NH state senator. After raising 4 daughters, my mother served for many years as a NH state representative. My parents taught us, by example, that we should give to others, who were not as fortunate as our family. In doing so, we honored our Irish heritage.

    An Irish Blessing

May Joy and Peace Surround You,
    Contentment Latch Your Door
And Happiness Be With You Now
    And Bless You Evermore!

  39. nancy says:

After the green of St Pat’s Day, will be the yellow of daffodils.

  40. Jaime says:

What your article fails to state is the British were taxing the Irish to death, what little they had was being sent to Britain in the form of taxes.

BTW, republicans, as a whole, give much more to charity than democrats, even after taking into account differences in income and net worth.

    • sbranch says:

Unfortunately the total of all charity contributions made by Republicans, Democrats, Independents, and Agnostics together doesn’t come close to covering the need, and of course it’s a world need, not just an American need.

      • sondra fox says:

Republicans aren’t the devils the media makes them out to be. I only believe half of what the news media supplies us with. Reporting the news used to be, reporting the news, not giving their (reporters & news media) own ideas about how we all should think. (Sandy from Chihuahua Flats)

        • sbranch says:

Republicans are not devils at all. Neither are Democrats. They are all human, some (on both sides) are good with the most wonderful of intentions and some (on both sides) are more about power and influence, but they are all being influenced by money. As long as lobbyists can have the ear and controls the pursestrings of the congress person more than we do, they will do what the lobbyist wants and not us. It’s the system. And in order for those “good” or “bad” congress people to get what they need, ie, change the world for the better, or get more power for themselves, they all have one thing in common, they have to get elected and reelected. And right now it’s mostly the lobbyists that pay for those elections and not us.

      • Jack says:

I like the broad scope of your concern and knowledge Sue — but you can see this perfect example of it working just as the politicians want it to — instead of the subject matter (because they politicize everything), we end up focused on who is bad and who is good, who gives the most, who gives the least, instead of who is hungry and how to fix it. It defines the tunnel vision that hampers progress necessary to improve the “overall” conditions that exist! Until we take a big giant step over this constant manipulation nothing will ever get done.

        • Mary S. says:

And my dream is that we never talk politics on this wonderful, happy blog!!! 🙂
          Mary S. in Fresno, CA

  41. Gina D. says:

    Oh Susan,
Planning a dreamy 25th wedding anniversary/50th birthdays trip to you-know-where. Was the great antiques store, where you found your teapot, actually in Wirksworth proper? Can you remember the name? So much fun planning! Referring to your book and choosing places (the sadness of leaving so much out!) and thinking of you. –Gina
p.s. were any of your peeps near the so. cal. earthquake this a.m.? -fellow valley girl

    • sbranch says:

Yes, you can’t miss it. I can’t remember the name but it doesn’t matter, it’s right at the crossroads in the center of town and it has big windows you’ll be able to see inside. Are you going to stay there? My mom is down near Long Beach, but she didn’t feel it. And everyone else is further away. So good!

      • sondra fox says:

Felt the earthquake in the San Fernando Valley. I must be a fairly calm peep however, ’cause it takes more than that to shake me up. The news went on & on about it, as though the quake was horrible. (Sandy from Chihuahua Flats)

  42. Patty says:

Tasha set such I nice example of simple living, something I think of more and more each day.

    • sondra fox says:

Have you ever read the magazine, “Simple Living?” It’s wonderful if you’d like to live simply. Lots of ideas on living simply & staying organized. (Sandy from Chihuahua Flats)

  43. Kristen G says:

Oh what a lovely giveaway! I have become a fan of Gladys Taber because of your enthusiasm for her writing and just finished Stillmeadow Seasons last week. I’ve got the library holding another of her books for me which I’m to pick up soon!

  44. Lacy Joy says:

Happy Spring, Ms. Suzy Q! Thank you for your lovely post today. Happy St. Patrick’s Day! Pick me!
    <3

  45. Debbie R from Valencia, CA says:

Good morning Susan, and girlfriends. Happy St. Patty’s Day. I am not Irish but I must wear green since I work in the offices at our elementary schools and every student is always wearing green so must we. Love the pics of Jack and his beautiful green eyes. We have a black kitty that likes to chase my birds away from my feeders and he sits on our stone wall and stares at us through the kitchen window. Everytime I try to take a pic of him he runs, just like Jack. Too funny. Have a beautiful day and enjoy your stew or corned beef and cabbage everyone.

    • Debbie R from Valencia, CA says:

P.S The black kitty that sits on my wall has green eyes just like Jack. Forgot to tell the most important thing about the kitty 🙂

  46. Tatiana Oleksy says:

I love Gladys Taber! I would love to win this book 🙂

  47. Robin Strong says:

My apologies…Gladys Taber…misspelled her last name on my original post. Once I spelled her name correctly, I discovered that we DO have many of her books in our library system! I’m happy to add to my Spring Break reading plans. Thanks again for the intro!

  48. Penny says:

Coincidence! I just finished making a big pot of Irish stew and after it was bubbling away on the stove I thought I’d have a little ‘Girlfriend’ time on the blog!

  49. Amanda Peak says:

Thank you for a touching St. Patrick’s Day post- very enjoyable read on the couch with a couple kitties, a couple doggies and a warm cup of coffee on this rainy Tampa day! Love the article link and also the wonderful kitty pictures!! XO Amanda Peak

  50. Joy Breedlove says:

Please do enter me in the book give-away, that sounds delightful. Spring is finally beginning to creep into the North Georgia mountains although I say that as I sit here with my little space heater warming my feet, it has been a chilly, raw day. But the daffodils are blooming and the trees are beginning to think about budding out – the buds are starting to swell a bit – and one day, it really WILL be spring!
Happy St. Patrick’s Day to you.

  51. Betty says:

Good Morning to you. Happy St. Patrick’s Day and thanks for the new blog post. I love reading your posts. They are fun and full of little tidbits. I would love to win your giveaway. Blogging is such great fun and the wonderful fellow bloggers are amazing.
    Have a great day,
    Joyously,
    Betty @ My Cozy Corner

  52. Marsha MacLean says:

What a great post for this day, when we all feel a bit Irish! I found the NY Times article fascinating and was so glad you included the link. My late mother-in-law always said that “the Quiet Man” was her absolute favorite movie. I am going to try to find it today.
Thanks, sweet Sue, for including me in this giveaway. I purchased one of Gladys Tabor’s books from your website last year and would love to have this one!
    Happy St. Patrick’s Day!

  53. Mary Brehm says:

Hi Susan. Happy Saint Patricks Day to You! It seems you always have such perfect timing when posting a new blog and know when I need a bit of up-lifting in my day. The corn beef is simmering and I have some irish music playing. My very irish Dad is coming over for dinner tonight. I am making your pinapple upsided down cake for desert (i know it’s not irish, but i had a craving and thought it would be fun!) Guess what…I was poking around in my local thrift shop and I found a copy of your vineyard seasons cookbook for 1.99! I was so excited I almost gasped! There were some other lades looking at the books and I had to be cool….I reached in and grabbed it and hugged it to my chest. I swear my heart was pounding a bit. I came right home and made myself a cup of tea and commenced to reading…sigh, so much fun. I don’t think you know how happy you make all of us girlfriends! Now I have two cookbooks in my collection and will continue to hunt for more treasures. Once again I will say…Thanks for being you. Mary Brehm <3

    • Mary Brehm says:

Hi Sue. I posted a comment yesterday and it still needs to be moderated. Sorry to be a pest…i know you are busy with your book. Thanks again, Mary Brehm

  54. Miss Marion says:

And a Happy St. Patrick’s Day to you Susan and everyone here!!
We always have a very, very special celebration because it is my mother’s birthday!! She is 87 years old today. And is she ever proud of her wee bit of Irish blood! Happy Birthday Mom!!!

  55. Pamela from NYS says:

It brings me so much joy to read your blog posts! Truly one of my fav things I take the time out to read these days. Its always makes me feel happy ~ like when you see the first crocus or enjoying the splendor our first spring blooms! Im not familiar with Gladys Taber. But trusting in your taste and talents, Im sure I would love. Happy Spring Susan!

  56. Barbara Watins says:

I would love and treasure this book. Thank you so much.

  57. Cindy B says:

Happy St. Patrick’s Day Sue! Even here in Louisiana it is 47 degrees today – we want Spring too! Going to a huge book sale Thursday and hope to score a Gladys Taber book – found 2 last year – or maybe I will be lucky and get one you have signed. Top o’ the morning to ya!

  58. ElFe says:

    Dearest Susan,
Years ago when I was a young mother living in the desert of Arizona and missing the green rolling hills of Ohio I used to treasure reading “Butternut Wisdom” in bed after everyone else was asleep. Reading of all she enjoyed in her part of the country helped me to not feel so very far from my roots and the lifestyle I loved. It was my own special treat to ME!
Later, when my husband and I were traveling one summer, we made a quest of hunting all the old Gladys Taber books we could fit in the car. She helped me through to retirement.
Now I live in Oregon and much of what Gladys shared with me I enjoy first hand. But she was my lifesaver and companion for almost 50 years–and each thing of beauty I witness keeps her alive in my heart. I will always be grateful.

  78. peg says:

Happy St. Pat’s Day, Sue! Years ago, before my best girlfriend moved, we would go to her home for the traditional corned beef and cabbage dinner complete with soda bread! Great memories! Tonight, in true non-traditional Outpost form, we are having baked spareribs, steamed broccoli and multi-grain sourdough bread.

It sounds like you are on a roll with your new book…very exciting! Always fun to have something new to look forward to!

  83. chris consentino says:

thank you! oh! thank you, Susan. you make a good day quite great!!! I was very pleased to read the post by Grace, from NH, having recently moved from a lifetime of nh to va. I don’t know who her folks are, (or, were), but I can say this: if they taught her to share with folks who had much less, then that is the best gift they could’ve given her and her sisters!! it’s a true SHAME the way some are so hateful towards those who are HUNGRY and need some help!!!!!!!!!!!! one can never know how much hunger hurts till one has been hungry….not JUST from a skipped meal…but, by having NO FOOD!!!!!!!!!!!!! my folks always taught to “put yourself in the other person’s shoes”!! I totally agree with the nyt article!!!!!!!!!! well said and heartfelt!!!!! those to whom MUCH has been given should have a little HEART towards the rest of the population. come on, people!!!

  84. L.S. says:

I love the ingredients of the Irish stew. I love St. Pat’s. My favorite uincle was born today almost 100 years ago. Bless his heart. He passed away at 80. He was an Irish Blessing for sure.

Faith and begorah, your site always cheers my heart!

  85. Mary Madden says:

  87. Kelly Paquet says:

I enjoy your blog so much, and appreciate your sense of the beautiful in daily living! I’d be pleased to win the book by Gladys Taber. I’ve read some of her writings, and find she, too, is a kindred soul. Keep seeing and creating and sharing, Susan. You are helping make the world a better place.

  88. Sharon says:

Corned beef and cabbage with soda bread last night. Cottage pie tonight. Just went to an Irish mass — what a baffling language! Love Gladys Taber — my dad and I went to a reunion years ago on Cape Cod and then toured Stillmeadow — wonderful memories and even more so since we just lost my wonderful Dad.

  89. judi says:

I really must try to find some Gladys Tabor books – I know I would love them!

The house smells delish as my onions, corned beef, carrots, cabbage along with apple cider, spices, orange peel, brown sugar & a touch of mustard went into the crockpot at 7 a.m. should be ready about 5:00 🙂 I’ll cook a few potatoes separately as I ran out of room.

The celebrating spring cards are adorbs!! Nose xx’s, ha, to the sweet kitties and have a delightful day to ALL!

  90. Kathryn Rehrig says:

Thank you for such a nice St. Paddy’s Day blog…greatly appreciated by me whose maiden name was Murphy! My reservation is in and I’m so looking forward to hearing and meeting you at the FOGT Reunion. It will be great fun. See you then…

P.S. Just finished “A Fine Romance” over lunch and absolutely love the way you ended your book. So perfect!

  91. Janet W. from Pittsburgh, PA says:

This book would be a wonderful accompaniment to your Fall Moons bookmark; how nice to learn about the seasons and moons. My mom and I saw the “Worm Moon” yesterday and we couldn’t believe how large it was. We referenced your bookmark to find the name. Thank you, Susan. We learn so much from you and come to your site for enjoyment and pick me ups when needed.

  92. Susan ( an Ohio gal in SoCal ) says:

It’s a beautiful spring day here in SoCal; just returned from a walk and then sat down to read your blog (always my favorite!). I’m reminded that I wanted to get the Gladys Taber Newsletter again. I used to get it years ago – why did I let it lapse???? Susan, I hope you and all the Girlfriends will take and share lots of pictures from the day. I know there are many others like myself who would absolutely love to get to Stillmeadow, especially when you are there. But I know we’ll all enjoy making the trip vicariously with you.

  93. Deborah Winter says:

Happy St. Patrick’s Day! I love seeing everyone wearing green and being in the spirit. I went all through grade school to a Catholic School and most of my friends were Irish but only those who were Irish were allowed to wear green so I always wished I was Irish. Now I decorate and celebrate the day like other holidays so I no longer feel left out. Just finished a smallish Shamrock Shake (tradition); I am so glad they now make a smaller size! Your Spring cards are adorable!!!

  94. Sandra M. says:

I have green eyes too, just like your sweet kitty. Happy St Patrick’s Day to all!

  95. tracey renfro says:

Headed to my library’s website now to see if they have any Gladys Taber.

  96. Pam G says:

Happy St Paddy’s Day to you Susan and Joe. I am definitely going to make your stew and some Irish soda bread I saw on FB. However since I haven’t the ingredients it will need to wait til the weekend, something to look forward to! The sun has been shining here for days but we think 20 degrees is warm now. Oh, I cannot wait until the yard is snow free for good. I miss digging in the dirt.
I would absolutely love to win the G. Taber book.

  97. Kathy B says:

So-o-o-o-o-o ready for spring too!! I always smile when I see your drawings of little sheep – – spring personified. Also wanted to say how happy I am that there will be blotter calendars for 2015 – – we love them around here. Sun in Syracuse area today, hope you will get some too……tons of snow still on the ground, but hey – – every day is closer to warmer weather and green things popping up!! Happy to be an entry for the book, Thanks!!

  98. Tricia Staley says:

    Hi Susan,

    Loved today’s post.
We made soda bread yesterday; corned beef cooking for tonight—a long- standing tradition to honor the Irish forebears.
