Good Morning Sue. I couldn’t sleep so I popped on while my coffee is brewing and poof! Here you are! How nice. It’s a rainy morning here in up-state NY but that’s ok. I’m going to have my coffee and quilt while the house is quiet. Enjoy your day!
    Love, Mary B

    • sbranch says:

      You too Mary!

      • sondra fox says:

Like you Mary, I woke up early this morning, couldn’t sleep either. I “may” get sleepy once again & crawl into bed for a few more ZZZZZZZ’s. Those “Glory of the Snow” flowers are so beautiful. I’ve never seen them before. Are they the first flowers that come up after the snow? My new kitty is awake & crying at her bedroom door, for us (Jack & myself) to come in to see her. We were just in there petting her & holding her. She & Jack are becoming accustomed to one another, but I won’t let her into the entire house until I’m certain he won’t be rough with her. Today, he stood on his hind legs & whipped his front legs up & down, in front of her, which is his way of saying “let’s play.” I sure hope they’ll become friends. Our house would be such a happy place if they enjoyed one another. I’m taking their friendship in little baby steps, lots of patience in initiating a cat & a frisky dog.
        (Sandy from Chihuahua Flats)

        • sbranch says:

I think they’ll get used to each other. Usually the cat gets control over the dog and then all is well. Snow drops come up here first, and then the little blue stars.

          • sondra fox says:

Hi Susan, Your area is a little bit of heaven. Such a place for the unique. (Sandy from Chihuahua Flats)

  26. Marilyn Seals says:

Hello. I visit your blog every day for inspiration and joy to last throughout the day. My husband has cancer, and each day is dreaded without the sunshine you bring into my life. I can’t possibly put into words how much you are helping me through this ordeal. I am grateful for the sweetness in your personality.
    Fondly,
    Marilyn

    • sbranch says:

Oh my dear, I am so sorry. Love that you come here for sunshine, may it shine very brightly for you. . . My thoughts and prayers are with you and your husband. xoxo

      • Rhonda D. says:

Marilyn, so sorry to hear about your husband. I will keep both of you in my prayers. I had to deal with cancer last year and Susan’s blog kept my sanity….definitely a ray of sunshine in a very dark place. You are not alone.

        • Ann Jane Koerber says:

Marilyn, I will also keep you and yours in my prayers. Sometimes, during the dark days, brightness shines through with just a lot of ((((Hugs)))) from your girlfriends. Keep blogging.

        • Joan Lesmeister says:

Sending prayers, to your family Marilyn. Susan’s sweetness & sunshine brings me here too!

Away a few yrs ago, I came here to feel “normalcy” & received great comfort just reading all the comments & wrapping myself up in Susan’s creativity. I love this blog…

          • Sara says:

I know what you’re saying, Cathy. Susan is always so encouraging and makes me feel like I’m one of her girlfriends too. If you’d like to look me up on FB, I’m not particularly creative, but I love to ‘talk’!

            Sara McKeefer, Indiana

        • sondra fox says:

Hi Marilyn, I was in the same boat you’re now in, fighting cancer in my husband. I know what you’re no doubt feeling. Along with Susan’s wonderful blog, while my husband slept, I worked on puzzles while listening to the radio, or read some wonderful books. Anything to take me away from illness for a few hours. You’re in my thoughts & prayers. (Sandy from Chihuahua Flats)

  27. Sharon Smith says:

    Happy Spring from Kansas too!

  28. Ann Jane Koerber says:

Hello Dear Susan……On a rainy day, when I want to do something around the house, but don’t know where to start, I peek at your website and you give me all kinds of ideas and incentives! I can re-arrange things on the kitchen shelves……and dust them to boot!…………or, I can hang some wonderful pictures of friends on my bathroom wall…………or, dust off my bookshelves and peruse my books……..and maybe read one that I haven’t read in years (A Tale of Two Cities perhaps)…..or, write a letter or two, or three to dear friends far away or near…. of course, none of this will be done without a cup of tea to get me going or wind me down…….which will make me possibly try a new recipe from your collection. With my home and all of my treasures, I shall never be lonely……and I will have miles to go before I sleep! Thank you, thank you for all that you do!! xoxo

  29. Karen Williams says:

Welcome back Willard! Lovely to receive and cannot wait to try the lemon cake…it looks delish! I make a good version in chocolate, so I cannot wait to try this! Wish I had seen it sooner as I spent yesterday afternoon making scones, jam tarts and a good ol’ apple pie! Yum, scrum…in my tum!
Thank you so much Susan, as always you brighten every day and cheer all our hearts!

  32. Rhonda D. says:

It’s always such a blessing to come to the computer and find a new Susan Branch post awaiting me. Some people need tea in the morning, but tea and a new post is just over the moon! Loved the photo of your flowers “Glory of the Snow.” They remind me of the Bluebells of Scotland. Don’t know if you’ve ever done this, but I checked to see if Bluebells could be planted in this area. I did find bulbs in our seed catalog and I also found seeds available in Scotland (perennials). Could I get the seeds into my own country without a problem? (Just thinking on paper). Then we’d always have a bit of England/Scotland in the yard. Love this thought, good for the heart.

  33. K. Ross says:

As always, I would love to win a Susan Branch prize . . . but, as always, I won’t. Anyway I love your little personalized Easter bunnies. Really cute and unique. Happy Almost May!

  34. Yellow shells!…from the sea far away
to show our Montana blue bells, spring is here to stay!

  35. Send the Yellow shell, from the sea so far away
to Montana blue bells, to show spring is here to stay

    • sondra fox says:

Patricia, I remember “ohhhhh & awwww” at those MT Bluebells. What a fantastic display they put on each year. So many in one place! One of the nicest scenes from our trips across this beautiful country. Happy Spring. (Sandy from Chihuahua Flats)

  36. Elaine in Toronto says:

Hi Susan, all flowers are beautiful but none so beautiful as those we pick from our own garden and place in a wonderful whimsical precious little duck vase. It surely rivals the costliest of bouquets from a florist. They are lovely too, but not as endearing. Happy spring.

  37. Lori says:

always looking forward to your blog. I have told so many people about Susan Branch and all the wonderful things you write about………………..they also love all you do as much as me. Have a nice day. Lori Ragalis

  38. Michelene Thomas says:

  39. Anne Miller says:

    Susan,
.My sweet mother in law gifted me with one of your early calendars, 1992, I think. i I have been a fan/follower ever since. The little notes that I placed in my children’s lunch bags often included quotes from your calendars and books. All four of them are launched now but they have those notes and treasure them. I found this on my Yogi teabag the other day and it reminded me of you.
    “Live light
    travel light
    spread the light
    be the light.”
Thank you for sharing your lovely light!

    • sbranch says:

All except travel light. I’m a failure at that! The others are aspirations! Thank you Anne!

  40. Rae Ann R...back in Michigan...forever... says:

  41. Lynne Weliver says:

    Good Morning, Susan
A dreary Saturday morning was just brightened by your lovely windowsill vignette of yellow pears and blue snowdrops. My garden is beginning to thaw and I spy some daffodil stems and myrtle trying to flower beneath the winter blanket of leaves and pine needles. My favorite Spring display – dog wood blossoms – is still weeks away. Thank you for sharing the season on the Vineyard. Lynne

  42. Regina Knapp says:

After this winter I never thought I’d be inclined to remark on “Glory of the Snow” anything!!! However, those flowers are definitely glorious!!! And perfectly “paired” with the gorgeous yellow pears. Thanks for, once again, brightening my day! 🙂

  43. Monika says:

I just read your book A Fine Romance (I know ‘better late than never’). Beatrix Potter is a great influence in my life. It was such a wonderful book to read. In it you posted your web site, another great find for me. Thank you for sharing with the world your home, travels, thoughts and gifts. It is an inspiration to me. Have a wonderful day today. It is cloudy and rainy here so I will bake some lavender short bread for an afternoon tea beside a warm fire to chase away the rainy chills. Thank you again for sharing. I look forward to enjoying your web site.

  44. long island Rita says:

. I have all of your cookbooks,Susan. I put them up high before hurricane sandy. I lost (no exaggeration) 100’s of my coobooks. But yours were nice and dry. Is that a pencil you are holding in that adorable photo with your Dad?

    • sbranch says:

It is a pencil! I thought that was pretty neat when I saw that! What little kid has a pencil?

  45. Mary says:

Hello Susan! I first discovered your wonderfulness when I bought your calendar that featured a recipe for each month which, by the way, your recipe for split pea soup is my all-time favorite! I enjoy your website, blog and Willard of course, and look forward to all your terrific offerings. Please deep posting pictures of Jack for he reminds me of my cat, Max, from long ago! Have a beautiful spring day, Mary

  46. Renee Mumford says:

Oh boy, I wonder what you have in store for your alignment of pears standing at attention on your window sill. What a pretty site! Those flowers and vase are breathtaking! You have such an eye for beauty! Thank you! *Today’s Chicago weather is blustery and bright NE winds off the lake. The river tour boat people that glide by my kitchen window look anything but warm. They don’t seem any worse for the wear though! Take care.

  47. Debby says:

So last Wed. I am waiting to get Willard when my ipad chimes. So fun reading and just as I am thru I hear the mail truck and my sweetie brings me a box from Susan Branch. I got Heart of the Home, Stillmeadow Daybook and a green towel. Right away, I look thru The cookbook, stopping and reading how to press flowers, thinking I should do this, my husband grows orchids and I have a giant dictionary. Then I start reading Stillmeadow Daybook, loving it so much, and THEN a beautiful little dried violet falls out of the pages! and I said the word of Ooooooh! That flower flew to my heart. Thank you for the very sweet surprise Susan I will treasure it for always. Xoxo Debby

  48. Ann says:

Love the pears on the windowsill. It’s so you. Now Carly Simon is singing in my head.

  49. Eloise in Dallas says:

Happy Spring! I always enjoy reading your blog. I was taking my granddaughter out to lunch this week and on her CD of children’s songs we listened to was “playmate come out and play with me…” It was fun to sing and share with her a song we enjoyed growing up. Thanks for all you share with us.

  53. Mary says:

What a beautiful picture of the pears, flowers and vase!!! I still have your winter picture (of your home with the snow!) as my “wallpaper”! It’s hard to change it because it’s so beautiful! I was wondering if you happen to have a spring picture of your home with all the blooms that I could use for my “wallpaper”? 🙂 Thank you! You are certainly a bright spot for all of us!

  54. Edie McAdoo says:

LOVE the blog. Now it is off to my garden to enjoy And weed!

  55. sherrill says:

Oh, Susan, I’m so very glad that you put in the photo of your ” Glory of the Snow” flowers!! I noticed them in Williard and wondered what they were. Now I know and they are so sweet and lovely.Thankyou so much for including them again.
It’s raining here in my part of CT now but hopefully by Monday we’ll have some Sun again.
Oh, before I say goodbye, let me just tell you one thing. Earlier in the week I was on the Vintage page of your website and saw the Pink Glass bowl; I had looked at it before many times and admired it, but couldn’t really get it at the time….and then it was gone!!! Imagine my disappointment! But then it came back on again…..Oh, how wonderful! Now I’m awaiting it’s arrival; it should be here early next week. So, thankful for finding it for me during your travels!
Enjoy the rest of your day~~ Sherrill in CT

  56. Edie McAdoo says:

Love the blog and the pictures of the Vineyard. Now I’m off to enjoy y garden and do some much needed weeding. Edie

  57. Margie says:

Thank you for the beautiful picture of you Glory of the Snow flowers. After such a long cold winter I am going to have to plant some of the bulbs this fall. Just feel like I can’t get enough spring this year. I need to get outside and do some yard work the sun is shinning and a little cool perfect to clean out some flower beds. I am going to plant some pots I have for the porch too. My plans are to use the violas and little daffodils. Unfortunately, I left the basket of violas out on the back step last night and I guess the deer thought I left them a treat. So for a little bit the pots will be filled with green leaves and stems but the daffodils will give them a shot of color. Oh well, at least everyone is happy! Have a wonderful weekend everyone.

  58. Edie McAdoo says:

Hi Susan. Love your blog and the pictures of the Vineyard. Now I am heading for the garden to enjoy – and to do some MUCH needed weeding. Edie

  59. Edie McAdoo says:

I don’t understand the “waiting for moderation” notation.

    • Elaine in Toronto says:

Hi Edie, when we leave a comment for Susan, it appears with the notation “Awaiting moderation”. We can see our post but no one else can until Susan “moderates ” it which means she okays it to appear so everyone can read your comment. Susan has to do this because of all the unwanted spam. It saves us from having to wade through pages of uninvited comments. Because we love to comment, it sometimes takes Susan a little longer to “moderate” as she enjoys reading all of our comments even if she can’t reply to each one, especially if there is a giveaway. Hope I’ve explained this so you can make sense of it. Good luck in the drawing, Edie.

  60. Marty Cotton says:

I love those blue flowers-they are everywhere around here right now and I never knew the name of them-now I do!! Thank you!!

  67. R. Summers says:

For those of you who get up early to greet the day, remember that May 4 is Dawn Chorus Day. In honor of that, we offer the following:

    “Morning has broken,

    “Like the first morning . . .”

English children began singing the song in church services decades ago.

Folk singer/song writer Cat Stephens popularized it in the 70s.

    “Morning has broken . . .”

It is a song of spring.

    No matter the season.

Only hours into spring, shortly before morn was to break, we stepped out to get the papers.

Retrieved them, sat down in our front porch chair.

Waited for the sun to break the day, bless the day.

In a few minutes it did, initially bringing its special array of soft, inspiring colors.

    And hope.

A bird came. We didn’t get sufficient look at it to know what kind.

Might not have known even if we had gotten a good look at it.

It settled into the hedge in front of our porch, began singing.

Until it sang, we’d more or less assumed the birds about our place knew only a song or two.

    As do we.

On this morn, we learned otherwise.

This bird sang a different, extended tune.

After a little while, we realized this bird had what seemed to be an inexhaustible repertoire.

    No two songs were alike.

For several seconds, it would offer up one song.

Then, finished with that song and without hesitation, it moved seamlessly on to another song.

For an equal amount of time.

    Then on to another song.

    Then another.

    Then . . .

How many songs can a bird know?

    Sing?

Depending upon the bird, some say thousands.

    Some say tens of thousands.

Some say some birds sing with special energy at dawn.

    More loudly.

    More vigorously.

    More enthusiastically.

    More purposefully.

    Mornings can be like that.

    For birds.

    For people.

After a good while, the bird that came to delightfully break the morn for us, with us – and after we lost count of the many different songs it sang – it moved on.

Perhaps to sing for a neighbor.

    Then maybe another.

    And then . . .

    Bringing the morning.

    Cheerfully, optimistically bringing the morning.

    Presenting the morning.

As it deserves to be presented.

    Offering up its enviable repertoire.

Like the awakening sun, helping to bring the day’s blessings.

    Smoothing, soothing as it does.

    As morning breaks.

And, having been calmed, entertained, encouraged, delighted, stilled and yet at once enlivened by the countless, captivating songs it sings, we’ll be back tomorrow.

    Promise.

    Bright ‘n’ early.

Before darkness completes its assigned time.

Before the sun begins to sign on for the day.

We’ll be back, hoping this joyous, melodious songster comes again.

    To elevate the spirit.

    Captivate the heart.

    Embrace the soul.

    To say good morning.

    To smile upon us.

To offer up its delightful, limitless repertoire.

And all that comes with it.

    As morning breaks.

  68. LS LAUER says:

Marie from up north mentioned, “magic moments”. You do have a knack of tapping into magic moments from my past. I’m sitting in my favorite chair with my favorite soda-diet Pepsi. I needed a break from housework.

Keep your magic alive and keep sharing it with us! LS

  69. Patty Anderson says:

I live vicariously thru you and your lovely blog. Today it’s rainy and cool in Utah, my favorite kind of day, and I just want to hunker down with my puppy and think of things on my bucket list…such as seeing your little corner of the world!

  70. linda k. says:

Looks like the rain has taken a break for minute . . .yay! Always brings a smile to my face to see you in my email, Susan!

  72. Barbara Faylor says:

I love love love you, Susan…you always make me smile.

  73. R. Summers says:

For those of you who like to get up early, this is a reminder that May 4 is Dawn Chorus Day.

Any chance you will do a book signing in Laguna Beach as you were hoping to do before? I have your book, but I know some of my girlfriends would enjoy one, too!

Hi Girlfriends! Don’t tell anyone but it rained in Southern California last night. It actually poured! Right now it is beautifully sunny. I LOVE IT! I just finished planting a container garden on my front porch along with a cute picket bench and a small chest of drawers with flowers growing in the drawers. I hung a simple wreath with ivy on it over the bench. This is the kind of stuff that makes it MY house. Oh, I forgot to say that there is also a Susan Branch flag flying . My neighbor told me that she wants to do her front porch also. Oh, I have cute bunnies and that same bunny crossing sign that you have, Susan. How does it feel to cause so much inspiration?

We just arrived home from a tulips and windmills tour in Holland and Belgium. We left about a foot of crusty hard snow behind and came home to crocus and daffodils greeting us. The best gift ever. (Except for seeing endless fields of tulips, lambs on dykes, little homesteads with lambs and oh yes, the windmills.)
