Ray's terrier collection

But while I’m here, I think we should get a little fun out of life! One of our Girlfriends asked to see a close-up of Ray and Paul’s Terrier collection that was glimpsed in one of the photos in the post below . . . so here they are!  On a shelf in her kitchen. (Ray’s version of Beatrix Potter figurines!)  When we went to visit Ray and Paul in England, Joe and I brought the little dog on the far left.  He’s made of iron and very heavy for his size. Aren’t little collections like this wonderful?  No two alike!

It’s not in my DNA to do such a short post, I’ll be back soon, but here’s a little food for thought for your Sunday . . .

King of Intimate delights

pins border

Weather-wise we’ve had it all this winter on Martha’s Vineyard ~ sheets of ice on the kitchen porch, sleet and snow that “chill and bite,” wild winds beating at the windows ~ the temperature fluctuates wildly: my first house in the snowyesterday it was 20° with a misty ice-fog in the air, the foghorn blew all day; this morning it’s 40°, grey and raining.  Cars drive by, I hear their tires slapping the road. Joe made us a fire; he’s reading the paper in front of it with crackle and pop and ashes falling, tick of wind-up clock, rustle of pages turning; Foreign Correspondent with Joel McCrea is on the TV in my studio; Jack is giving himself a bath on my art table, Girl is curled on the back of Joe’s couch, and I’m saying hello to you and getting ready to spend the day painting; wending our way through life ~  “God’s in his heaven, all’s right with the world” here in Smallville.

O’ Winter, King of the MOST Intimate of Delights . . .

And tonight, Girlfriends?  For frosting on the cake and “continuous small pleasures?” Downton Abbey!  Be there or be square! Wob you, Me.

Lucky us

It is right up your alley, if you haven’t seen I’m sure that you would enjoy it. Get the popcorn popped cuddle up and perpare for laughs and tears. Enjoy!

    Dear Susan,
Have been missing in action for three posts! Moving into town home and world is insane! No computers up, house a wreck but getting there, and just decided I had to stop tonight and catch up on IPad! Wonderful posts, loved the dog collection since there is a sneakly little Westie behind the “group”. Loved the watercolor of the birthday boy, loved the cardinal which is my fav and missing here in Colorafo, and more drawings to enter. Phew! Glad to be back. Glad you are here. Happy 2015!

  18. Sara says:

Hey, Susan, I had just finished cheering up a young friend who has her hands full with 4 little kids, and there you were to cheer me up, proving once again that what goes around comes around! These gray days of melting snow and mud everywhere have a way of turning smiles upside down, but you, my friend, are the perfect antidote!

This is the second time today someone has mentioned pancakes. My grandson said his daddy fixed them for him for breakfast, and then your suggestion to have them for supper… I’m thinking I have all the sign I need to have buckwheat pancakes smothered in butter & maple syrup for supper tomorrow night!

    🙂 Sara 🙂

  19. Debbie says:

    Hello Susan,
Just wanted to be sure that you know about The Great British Bake Off. On our PBS station it airs before Downton. Not sure if you get it on Martha’s Vineyard but you really need to see this show. Watching it is absolute heaven! I know all the girlfriends will love it too.
All of our favorite things, the English countryside, beautiful baked goods and even lambs. The next best thing to a trip to England. It’s available online in case you don’t get it there. Put the tea on and take a look.
    Debbie

  20. Terri Carpenter says:

  22. Jeannette from the CA coast says:

  23. Kathleen says:

Susan, recently my mother shared her love of your blogs with me and I have been hooked ever since. I do enjoy reading them and am so looking forward getting your most recent book but I thought I might try for the teapot and book here first then go with plan B if another blessed soul wins!! Thank you for the bright spot you bring to my email!

  24. Gail H. O. says:

I adore Emma Bridgewater pottery and have a large collection. There is nothing else like it and being handmade in England makes it so special!
Really enjoyed seeing Rachel’s terrier collection. I also have a collection of terriers as I have an Airedale Terrier named Willow.
Enjoyed this post for a winter day!

  25. Judy in Ohio says:

Good morning! I was so glad to see that you had done a new post for us this weekend! It is always nice to hear from you!

We have had crazy weather here in Ohio this winter, too. I say if it’s going to be this darn cold, we may as well have some snow on the ground, too! As it is, there is tonight icy rain (thank goodness I work from home and don’t have to drive in it in the morning…but I don’t get “snow days” either! :/ ) I love the winter, and all of the seasons as well, but in the winter, I have “excuses” to watch TV, play games, do puzzles, etc. 🙂 This evening I occupied myself with watching the movie “Here Comes Mr. Jordan” (that I had previously recorded)… have you seen that one?! I love it…and all of its “remakes”!! It’s one of those movies that you would like to have go on and on and on!

I know I thank you for this often…(and perhaps I get a bit tiresome)…but I just soooo appreciate how you remind us of the importance of the little things in life…and how life is what we make it! And the greatness of seizing each day.

And I am sure this will NOT be the LAST time I thank you!!

THANK YOU dear lady…for all that you do here!! 😀

    Stay warm!!

    <3

    • sbranch says:

You are a dear Judy, it is always nice to know you’re appreciated, when you hear nice things, it makes you want to do better, so thank you right back!

The post about your English friends was so interesting and the watercolor you painted of him is dead on!! I am sure they will treasure this forever. Now you need to paint Alice!!! You are so talented and warm hearted to boot. Thank you for making your wonderful life open to us girlfriends…..you truly are a friend. Thank you from Linda in Idaho where it has been cold and drizzly . I am trying to be lazy but after working 24/7 for the last 10years plus it is hard to do!!

    • sbranch says:

It is hard to do . . . I’ve tried it after finishing a book, taking time off. Very difficult. But I do think you get used to it after a while and then perhaps even fall in love with it!

  28. We had a very light dusting on Saturday, but the proper stuff is forecast for later in the week. That’s when good old England will grind to a halt and everyone enjoys an unexpected ‘snow day’!
Love the quotes and thoughts that help me appreciate the preciousness of life.
Keep warm and cosy over there.
    Rose from Oxfordshire

  29. Gladys Marie says:

Thank You. Another Visit. I enjoyed being by the crackling, popping fireplace. I enjoyed kitties napping and bathing. Once upon a time, I lived in the Poconos and I very much miss that cozy home in the frosty winter. Your visits are wonderfully welcome.

  30. paula cottrell says:

Susan, thank you for all the joyful, happy and interesting things you post on your blog. You are such an encouragment to all of us to see the good instead of the bad things in the world. 36. Joy Pence from Ohio says:

Happy Sunday to you! I watched the hgtv dream home just the other night, it show “The Black Dog” Restaurant, is that the one that Joe owns? I switched the show just to see the beautiful views of the haven on Martha’s

    • sbranch says:

Joe retired from the Black Dog about ten years ago, he was a partner there and ran it for twenty-three years. Haven on Martha’s, Oh Paul, you have started something!

  37. Alicia Hathcock says:

Somehow I missed this contest, so many thanks for keeping it open a little bit longer. My husband says tea runs in my veins instead of blood since I drink so much of it, especially during these winter months. But really, is anything more soothing to your soul or body than the thought, taste, pleasure of a cuppa? Your weather sounds right up my alley. I live in the south & we had a cold snap last week, but nothing like what you describe. Just low temps that caused my Yorkies to shiver & beg for their sweaters & blankets. But, oh how I enjoyed knitting by the fire, sipping my cuppa, hibernating & rejuvenating in peace. Hugs to you my friend & warm wishes.

  38. Rosinda says:

Happy Sunday, Susan! Wishing you a wonderful week ahead! xo

  39. Michele Washburn says:

The terrier collection is so cute! Lovely that you and Joe were able to add to it too!

  40. jane says:

My, oh, my, Susan – You have given us so many blog treats this week. Merci beaucoup! I just love opening your blog and finding new news, always so inspiring and it makes me want to hunker down and enjoy being in my cozy home. Todays’ assignment is to sort through and organize knitting patterns. I’m into my second cuppa and it’s only 4:43 a.m. here. Thank you for making each of us feel like your personal and best friend. You inspire me daily. Oh, and I had a feeling I wouldn’t be the lucky winner of your address book but I loved the organizing idea so much that I found one of Amazon. It arrived yesterday. I can’t wait to organize my websites and passwords and burn the dreadful four-page, scribbled papers of random information! I notice on the website that you are receiving more address books! Ladies, wait for the shipment — the book is just darling!, as usual.

  41. Lacy says:

Do hope I’m not to late for the drawing.

All is wet here in “Smallville” Portland OR.
But then again it is winter in the Northwest.

  42. Marty from NYC says:

Getting some fun out of life, indeed! It is the little moments that add up into happiness. A crackling fire and “Foreign Correspondent”. Such a great and clever movie. What a wonderful way to spend a Sunday! Thank you for sharing it. Marty,

  43. martha says:

Your weather sounds like the weather in North Carolina (I guess we send it to you, sort of)! My joy of the day is sitting in my living room, by the fire, just as the sun comes through the front windows in the morning. All year long, it marches from window to window in the bay. It is dangerously close to the far right window which means we are nearly ready for it to start back left and to spring… The promise of the 200 -plus bulbs I planted in the fall have kept my heart singing all winter… and doses of Smallville! Have a glorious week!

  44. Linda Metcalf says:

The Great British Bake Off, then Downton Abbey, then the new Grantchester, then Doc Martin…..PBS is my favorite! Such good telly. Our weather just a week or so ago we were 18 degrees and today are to go to 62 degrees…crazy Kansas weather!

  45. Nancy K. says:

    Hello Susan,
I sent a response to be entered for your signed book and teapot (would love a signed copy! I tried to come to a book signing, but plans were changed on me and I couldn’t come that time….hopefully will get to hear you in person some time!), but I went back to look at my posting, and I couldn’t see it. My computer has been acting funny, and I wasn’t sure you got it, so I am sending this again to make sure! P.S. You have talked about Downton Abbey so much, and up until now I don’t think I had the channel that it was on (although now I heard this season is on channel 13), so I took the first 3 seasons out of the library. My mom and I just finished watching season 1 and we are glued to it! We are going to watch the others to try to catch ourselves up. Hope you are having a good day 🙂 Thanks, Holly

I’m the transplanted New England girl. We have a home in Arizona, and one in Plain, Washington. Just got back from a wedding on the Big Island of Hawaii where it was a balmy 80 degrees. Here in Plain, it’s 30 degrees with a foot of snow. Brrr! I’m finding comfort in my favorite cup of chai tea, and alternating with lovely green tea while perusing pictures of the wedding on Facebook. Beautiful memories are the scrapbooks of the heart. Stay warm and busy in your studio, Susan. “If winter comes, can Spring be far behind?” I think not! Loving your artwork and Musica on a wintry day. Patricia

  92. ann weston says:

You have Downton Abbey AND Grantchester ?? I am suffering withdrawl symptoms, we do not have either right now in UK, even The Antiques Roadshow is having a rest while we have a new series of Call the Midwife (do you see that?)
also we are having cold weather – could have snow, dark early evening time. Enough moaning from me it will soon be Spring – that means sweet lambs to spot in the fields. Another good thing – we have “Mr Selfridge” third series later this month, have you seen “The Paradise”? I know you would love it.

    • sbranch says:

Yes, we’ve had Call the Midwife for at least a couple of years. Last night was our first night of Grantchester, it looks good, like a keeper! But you had it all before us, while we were suffering and alone, so it’s only a little bit fair! Yes, we have seen the Paradise, kind of wishing Downton would go shopping there and try on LOTS of dresses and hats!

Hi Susan, I’m thinking of Sylvia right now, a relatively newly married young lady. Once again, I shared your website with her Saturday night (as I have with many gals throughout the years). We had Sylvia and her husband to dinner, and lots of talk about her new life’s chapter ensued.
You offer such stability to women. Who wouldn’t get excited about homemaking with your wonderful ideas, encouragements and the list goes on? I was employed at the Institute for Research on Women and Gender, Stanford University. We addressed women’s issues globally; when you see despicable treatment of women in all parts of the world, think of the Institute for they are grass roots for developing and implementing solutions to unexceptable treatment of women everywhere.
Only to say, that not having “met you yet”, I figured out even then, that what every woman in the world needs is a heart’s return to the home, no matter what horrible things may be going on in her life. That the nest she keeps for her family needs to reflect love, peace, fun, and growing in order to reach a sense of fulfillment in her life- namely family bonding. When I found YOU, I immediately knew that Susan Branch was the Number One mentor for women’s homemaking development! Thank you Susan, for the millions of hearts you have touched over the years; your love and support help in so many ways to bring back the treasures of serving as a wife, mother and soul nutritionist for women everywhere. No other woman came close to what I imagined that women needed in their lives. I know, because I was hunting for you for years. You meet women’s needs in so many, many ways. Thank you for sharing who you are with all of us! We girlfriends are so blessed!
