Ray's terrier collection

But while I’m here, I think we should get a little fun out of life! One of our Girlfriends asked to see a close-up of Ray and Paul’s Terrier collection that was glimpsed in one of the photos in the post below . . . so here they are!  On a shelf in her kitchen. (Ray’s version of Beatrix Potter figurines!)  When we went to visit Ray and Paul in England, Joe and I brought the little dog on the far left.  He’s made of iron and very heavy for his size. Aren’t little collections like this wonderful?  No two alike!

It’s not in my DNA to do such a short post, I’ll be back soon, but here’s a little food for thought for your Sunday . . .

King of Intimate delights

pins border

Weather-wise we’ve had it all this winter on Martha’s Vineyard ~ sheets of ice on the kitchen porch, sleet and snow that “chill and bite,” wild winds beating at the windows ~ the temperature fluctuates wildly: my first house in the snowyesterday it was 20° with a misty ice-fog in the air, the foghorn blew all day; this morning it’s 40°, grey and raining.  Cars drive by, I hear their tires slapping the road. Joe made us a fire; he’s reading the paper in front of it with crackle and pop and ashes falling, tick of wind-up clock, rustle of pages turning; Foreign Correspondent with Joel McCrea is on the TV in my studio; Jack is giving himself a bath on my art table, Girl is curled on the back of Joe’s couch, and I’m saying hello to you and getting ready to spend the day painting; wending our way through life ~  “God’s in his heaven, all’s right with the world” here in Smallville.

O’ Winter, King of the MOST Intimate of Delights . . .

And tonight, Girlfriends?  For frosting on the cake and “continuous small pleasures?” Downton Abbey!  Be there or be square! Wob you, Me.

Lucky us

Want to be sure I am entered into the contest for the teapot, tea and A Fine Romance. We are lucky today in Rockwall Texas – sunny and 60 degrees. Been out pruning the roses and spreading compost. No wind – just a heavenly day. Waiting for Downton Abbey…

  2. Your Winter sounds a lot like ours in the Midwest. Although when I put a photo of the lovely snow surrounding us earlier last week, my Australian readers breathed a sigh of relief. I enjoy reading of their warmth and flowers. 🙂

And I always enjoy reading your blog (and books). You are such a blessing, you and your Hubby and kitties. My Maine Coon sends a rather uppity “Meow”.

  3. linda says:

Here in Iowa City, IA we are having ‘spring break’ from winter! Snow is/has melted so we wait for the next storm to cover the dirty snow & make it pretty once again!

  4. Did someone say frosting and cake? Count me in!
    I’m so easily led astray…

  5. mari1017 says:

Oh Happy Day! back to you & Joe & furkids XOXO We’ve run the weather gamut here today…pouring before sunrise…dark and foggy rain at daybreak…sun popped out through the stained glass windows during church…now sunny and warm walking weather! Who says you can’t have it all??? 🙂 What a happy and wonderful musical post! Can’t wait for the new batch of banners to arrive in your store – love those!!! Happy hearts just around the corner now ♥ Time flies – love spending some of mine here! ~hugs~ mari
    p.s. Go ♥ Patriots ♥ !!! :-)~

  6. Jean Tracey says:

Always a cozy treat to read your blog…it just makes my day!!! 20 degrees here today…almost a heat wave compared to a few days ago! Planning a Downton Abbey evening

  7. Heartsdesire says:

Oh, I’ll be there tonight for Downton Abbey. Wouldn’t miss it. Here in my Smallville, I awoke to a power outage because of high winds that have strewn branches and pine cones all over the lawn. Unfortunately, no coffee was to be had, but after about three and a half hours, on it came and everything went back to normal. Amazing isn’t it, how we are affected by not having the convenience of electricity? Luckily, the sun came out, the winds died down, and I was able to finish the book I was reading, Sense & Sensibility by Joanna Trollope. Her take on the original. I enjoyed it very much.

  8. Jerri Wheeler says:

    Hi Susan!

Thank you for your post today and the reminder that I needed to enter your latest drawing. You spoil us so, but don’t stop! We are having a beautiful, warm weekend (What’s a weekend?…hee hee) here in southern California. We enjoy going over to the Dana Pt. harbor for a stroll to watch the paddleboarders and whale watching boats. Cheerio!

  9. mary cunningham says:

Adorable little , biggish dog collection …winter is upon us , but Spring will come soon !Stay safe and warm !!!

  10. Tricia says:

My mother Ella is in her late 80’s and has always dreamed of visiting England. I just sent her a copy of your wonderful diary “A Fine Romance”. She and my father visited Nantucket Island often and she always kept travel diaries. Even now she reads pages from them to me when she’s feeling nostalgic. I’m sure she will think your most recent book is an absolute treasure.

    • sbranch says:

Oh how wonderful! She sounds perfect for it! After she gets a chance to read a bit, tell her I said Hello!

  11. ellen says:

    Hi Susan,
I am sitting here watching the rain drip off the icicles on the trees. Only your cozy blog can warm me up! When is spring again? Hope it is better weather on the Vineyard. Perhaps I will have to snuggle under an unfinished quilt top as I quilt it and watch reruns of Downton Abbey in preparation for tonight. Whatever shall we do when the season ends?
Keep up your cheery and inspirational poems, thoughts and drawings. They are an oasis of sunshine in this tedious winter!

  12. JoAnn says:

Hi Susan! Dreary day but temp wise in the upper 40’s! Counting my blessings today, and everyday. Drinking my Tazo Zen tea, delicicous, and knitting my only 2nd pair of socks! Life is good here in Virginia Shenandoah Valley!

  13. Judy Lowe says:

Love your blog. My grandchildren love having tea with Nana. My four year old grandson calls it a tea party whenever we have tea. It is all about being together that makes it a party!

  14. Diane M. says:

    Susan,
I LOVE your blog. Love all your stories and photos. Thanks for sharing your life with us.
    I also love Downton Abbey.
Stay warm in your cozy house!
    Diane

  15. Rain or Snow, it always bring a glow to my day to read about what you are about. Love seeing “Alice” no matter what form she takes and always love Jack and Girl as they make themselves very visible in your laundry or on the window sills. I heard a bird sing a spring song as I walked to the mailbox, so he or she must be as anxious for spring as I’m sure we all are. Love and Hugs from Ohio by Lake Erie.

  16. debra sewell says:

I love the blog. the whole website is wonderful. I feel very much apart of the trips, teatime and appreciate you sharing your life with Joe and kitties with all of us. Think spring. Enjoy warm jammies and tea while we wait. Bless you.
Debra please enter me for even a tiny drawing.♡

  17. N Jean says:

At my sisters house with a roaring fire, good food, and reading your blog! A perfect day.

  18. Kathy says:

It’s even a little cold here in Florida and thank goodness the sun is out. We haven’t seen it in several days. Standing in church this morning with my family singing praises to the Lord on this cold January day is a real blessing. I can feel a Sunday afternoon nap coming on later in the day. I love your post and look forward to reading them. I feel like you are a good friend. Bless you and your family.

Beautiful sunny day here in Atlanta, but we had a week of dreary, rainy weather prior to the weekend.

  21. Cheryl Walsh says:

What a perfect picture you paint with words!

I also collect wire fox terrier figurines- very cute! Started with 1 and now I think I’m up to 40-didn’t know there were that many different ones.
    Stay warm! :o) Cheryl

  22. Ginette Wheeler says:

FINALLY today was a nice enough day to open the windows and let some much needed fresh air blow throughout the place, how grateful I am! A good day to bang the dust off the curtains, polish the furniture, vacuum the floors and wash all the bedding. When given a beautiful day I feel I should improve on it. Got to sit outside with the pup for an hour and read your blog and continue a good book, tonight Chili and Cornbread, yum. What a great day to fuel the soul for the coming week! Love you Susan, you’re my happy place, lol.

  23. Carole Woolery says:

We wob you too! Freezing rain here in CT this morning…read A Fine Romance AGAIN…heaven! And here in your post you have Ray and Paul’s terrier collection! And guess what? We adopted a sweet little terrier boy from a shelter in New Jersey yesterday…he loves our kitty…she’s not so sure yet.

  24. Gina P. from NY says:

    Hi Susan:

Strange weather day here… were supposed to have freezing rain until 10 a.m., then 12 Noon, then 2 p.m. It’s about 4:45, and I believe it has just turned to rain. Very bad roads here all day and lots of unfortunate car accidents. Needless to say, I haven’t budged all day. Been cooking, on computer, and reading. I also watched a wonderful PBS Masterpiece program, “The Manners of Downton Abbey”. Have you seen it? I DVR’d it and have been watching this afternoon. Goes through all the etiquette in dining, eating, dressing, both upstairs and down on Downton Abbey. So interesting!

I am sorry to confess that I am not a Downton Abbey watcher. Why, I don’t know… usually I love these “period” PBS dramas – but I guess I never started watching from the beginning, so now feel like I shouldn’t drop in at this point. My goal will be to try to catch up eventually with the series, then be all set to view Season 6 when it comes up. The absolute attention to detail in all the mannerisms, the clothes, the speech is fascinating! No wonder it has captured such a wide audience! The Historical Advisor on the series, Alastair Bruce, is the narrator, and is fascinating to listen to.

I just might drop in on tonight’s episode and see what I can catch up on. I had a brief idea of what is going on in this wonderful Masterpiece program I watched today.

Enjoy the program tonight, and happy painting!

I love Ray and Paul’s little terrier collection, it’s so much fun to collect things. It’s the thrill of the hunt that gets me going. Sounds like it is pretty cozy there in Smallville, even though it’s cold and wintery outside —- and Downton Abbey is on tonight, so what could be cozier! Thanks for your delightful blog Susan! Hugs from me-Sharon xx

In the meantime, we get to watch Downton Abby tonight! Yippee Skippee!!
    Hugs!

  35. CarolK says:

Icy rain most of the AM, warmed up and continued to rain all PM then about an hour ago it went quite dark, then every thing brightened up with an orange glow and now its pitch black out there. What crazy weather. My sister taught me how to crochet pinecones the other day and I’ve gotten four finished already. Next year they will dangle from the greens on the inside bannister. My motto ~ Busy hands are happy hands and you have got the happiest hands of all! Jersey hugs……….

  36. Mary Ann now in TN says:

  40. What a pleasant treat, a new post! The little figurines are sweet. Today I was officially a bum; stayed in my comphy clothes, watched romantic Hallmark movies; put pork and sauerkraut in the slow cooker and listened to the rain outdoors as I counted my blessings. Can’t wait to see who the lucky winners are.

  41. A cozy day for y’all —- how wonderful! Looking forward to “Downton Abbey” tonight. I saw a little of “Foreign Correspondent” while getting ready for church. Oh, how I love TCM.

  42. patti says:

Okay, I saw Downtown coming on the CW last night. Tell me how long will it take for me to catch up to the present??? I was just thinking today while in the grocery store, I need a new show to watch. Soap Operary type. Still working on getting out of the funk that I have been in for months now and I am working real hard on doing it. Took a spill the other day, I’m sure I broke a rib or something. So have to put my exercise classes on hold. It’s getting better and I am going to a dancing class this week. You always make me feel better, Miss Susan. I always read you blog because I know it will make me feel like doing something. I am trying to learn this blog thing. Yours is so good. I will get there, I know I will. I love you Miss Susan and Joe and your kitties. <3

  43. Bonnie says:

Waving hello from 70 degree F in San Antonio TX. 🙂 Few hours for PBS to bring me Downton. (spell check doesn’t like that spelling)

  44. Di Word says:

The weather in Waco, Texas is perfect. I’m on my screened in back porch reading your wonderful “Happy Sunday” entry. My day has been as perfect as the weather. I spent the afternoon reading and dreaming with Martha Campbell Pullen’s book, Antique Clothing: French Sewing by Machine. It got me all ready for tonight at Downton Abbey. The corgis are in the garden barking at a squirrel, God’s in His heaven and all is right in my world. Thank you for making me smile. Wob you back!!!

    • sbranch says:

I’m always wishing I could find styles I don’t see in stores . . . especially heavy linen things. I used to sew all my clothes when I was young, I guess I should think about doing it again!

  45. Helen Hougland says:

Hello From Kansas…. we had temperatures today in Smallville of 60 degrees! Of course a week ago it was in the single digits. That’s Kansas. ; ) I love, love the terrier collection belonging to your friend and I thank you for showing it up close at last. The finches, nuthatches, cardinals and others have been fun to watch at the feeders. This will be a winter long entertainment. Helped a daughter pack and assemble getting ready for a move into a darling house with 10 foot ceilings, pretty chandeliers (!!), lovely staircase, and interesting and charming little nooks and crannies in it. House is around 100 years old but sturdy and well….wonderful. Such fun! Looking forward to D.A. tonight and I’ll be thinking of you. Thank you for blogging today!

  46. Melinda Mary says:

I feel like a winner every time I see your drawings or read something you have written,You are a real blessing to so many, Thank you, thank you for your giving spirit. Mm

After Christmas at the Biltmore, I was more exited than ever to start watching Downton Abbey! I watched half of the first season today. Excellent! Don’t know if I will ever catch up, but I will eventually watch all. Your blog is my absolute favorite! Thank you! 70* in Oklahoma City today with some wind. Not complaining!

  51. Gail Buss says:

Hi Susan, I intend to “be there” and not be square!!! Just love Downton and can’t wait. We ate dinner early this evening to make sure we are ready. Joe is just as into it as I am. So much fun to watch together.

lOVE the little iron terrier you gave to your friend, Ray. So darn sweet!

Thanks so much for the Sunday blog. I always check just to make sure I don’t miss anything! Well see ya later alligator! With hugs, Gail xoxo

  52. Beth says:

We’ve “had it all” (weatherwise) here in central NC, too….and I realized I am a PURIST! Give me WINTER weather in Winter with all its brutal barrenness and snowy cold indoor days, …and SPRING weather in Spring with all its blooming anticipation of new life to come! But I hate when the seasons mix themselves up! Today it was in the mid-50’s, sunny, and BLUE skies–ROBINS were EVERYWHERE! Glorious but it’s JANUARY! Feels weird to me and such a Tease!
Whatever!…still putting on my Flannel Nightgown and settling in by the fire with a cuppa for Downton Abbey—and sweating bullets! haha!

    • sbranch says:

We had that too, it got up to 52* . . . we walked into town, the birds were singing. I imagined it to be a little recess. Very strange!

  53. AngieTink says:

  54. Lynn Winders says:

Susan, here in southwestern Utah, it’s 50+ degrees. While that may sound lovely to some, it also means we have very little Autumn or spring. But being born and raised in Missouri, I do remember snow and ice, the smell of crackling fires and “from scratch” hot chocolate and the warm, soft snugglieness of a sweater. Love having you share your life with us. Lynn

  55. Shelley says:

Happy Sunday back at you! Always enjoy your posts and especially your musica!

  56. Gert~Iowa says:

Sounds like a lovely, cozy kind of day! Here in the Midwest we’re finally having some warmer temps, with the sun shining brightly today! I will be taping Dowton Abbey to watch tomorrow! Stay snug as a bug in a rug…till we blog again! Luv u too!!

  57. Sherrie says:

I just read a comment where someone said they loved your little calendar–just wanted to let you know, so do I! I have to buy one every year and hang it at my desk at work. It’s always so colorful & lovely, it just makes me happy to look at it. And I always get comments from people about how pretty it is & how much they like it! So you help to brighten so many people’s days even with your little calendar.

  58. Pat Mofjeld says:

And, here anyway, following Downton Abbey tonight is Masterpiece Mystery’s “Grantchester” which looks pretty good. I love Sunday evenings on public TV in the Winter time! 🙂

    • sbranch says:

Yes, Grantchester looks good, but I’m sure I won’t be awake for it. Thank goodness for “On Demand” — I’ll watch it tomorrow. Let me know if you liked it!

      • Pat Mofjeld says:

I thought it was pretty good–like clever mysteries without a lot of blood or violence. What did you think? Do you ever watch Castle (ABC network) Monday nights? We really like that. Did, once again, think that Downton Abbey could have been run straight through–6 hours back-to-back–and everyone would have stayed glued to their televisions. It is hard to wait until the next episode… 🙂

  59. Linda Newport says:

I know how you feel about your friends in England. My daughter & son-law also have friends in England & I got to talk to them on face time. It was so exciting. They are a very sweet couple. ps love your blueberry cornmeal pancakes. Would go great with your tea.

  60. Joan says:

These days call for scones and tea. My husband and I are thinking of learning how to play cribbage. Does anyone enjoy this game?

    • sbranch says:

I used to have a friend who loved it . . . we played all the time until she moved away. It’s a wonderful game!

  61. Becky says:

A post from you and Downton Abbey too! Life is good!

  62. Sherry Moran says:

Temps are really nice here in the Dallas area. Finished binding my granddaughter’s birthday quilt at our guild retreat. Loved your post. Stay well!

  63. Jeanne says:

Thanks for a chance to enter for the drawing! I love seeing and hearing about your kitties. I have 2 sister kitties who live at my house, Delilah May and Talulah Fay! They love Downton Abbey, as I do!!

  64. Sherry N. says:

I ordered my first “Emma” mug recently. So much fun. But I have to say , my favorite teapot is one of yours. I love the green and white one .

  65. Patricia Ruehle says:

I absolutely love your birthday card surprise for your dapper friend in England. What a treasure! I am trying to dream up an original (handmade) birthday gift for two sweet girlfriends whom we will celebrate next Sat. It may be a simple bouquet of spring flowers which they can bring home and enjoy. I may tie it with a pretty “girlie” ribbon so it may qualify as “handmade”.
Thanks for continuing to inspire us with your heartfelt thoughts and ideas.

  66. Margie Basile says:

So happy to be entering for the drawing. Would love to learn how to play cribbage. Must take some time to learn that game.

  67. Robyn Genau says:

    Dear Susan
I was looking to see if my comment from this morning had been moderated, I can’t even find it. What could have happened ? I hope I said nothing to offend.

    • sbranch says:

I’ve been busy today working on the new calendars, am just getting to do “moderation” — I’m sure you said nothing to offend Robyn, I’m sorry ~ look for it soon (I have 231 comments waiting for me now!).

  68. jane says:

Oh my, it sounds as if you , Joe and the Kitties are all snuggled in. I have always loved a snow or ice day where you can’t go anywhere so you have to entertain yourself at home!

  69. Maggie says:

Cold winter days are best spent inside cuddled up with tea, a purring cat and a really good book. =)

    • Jan from Northern CA says:

Oh, I so agree. I found an old book I read as a young girl at the library called “Mount Joy” by Daisy Newman. It’s about a young college aged girl who loves Medieval history who goes on a pilgrimage in Spain. I hadn’t read it since the late 60’s. I curled up with it, the cat and a pot of tea this weekend……it’s been cold, wet, overcast and raining….and just perfect! Wonderful way to spend a sunday afternoon. Hope you enjoyed yours as well.
      Cheers,
      Jan from Northern CA

  70. Cheryl Harrod says:

I love the tea pot and the book. Your blog always brightens my day.

  71. Paula B. says:

I feel like I was right there by the fire, reading the paper and playing with a kitty! So warm and comfy…. crazy weather we are having: this morning there were warnings of black ice to be on the lookout for and this afternoon the rain still hadn’t arrived and the temps were hovering just over fifty degrees. Warmest we’ve seen in awhile! Lots of New England girlfriends have a big decision tonight, cheering on their beloved Pats or switching over to Downton. I have a feeling many will save Downton for tomorrow. Yes, life is good in these enjoyable small moments!

  72. barbara lassiter says:

A miserable day here, all together…..freezing rain and very slippery roads leading to lots of accidents in the area. I had promised to be the liturgist for our eleven o’clock church service, filling in at the last minute for someone. Away we went and no problems. We stopped for brunch afterwards at a little café near us and the thick slices of French toast with crispy bacon and hot tea, more than rewarded me. My husband had his usual of 2 eggs, over light, with grits, bacon and whole wheat toast. He felt rewarded, too! It was still a miserable day, but we made the best of it!

  73. Arlene koktavy says:

Happy Sunday susan, thanks for the beautiful cozy winter art. Stay snug arlene koktavy

  74. Judy Jennings says:

Oh! What a sweet, sweet terrier collection! You post the most wonderful things to make me feel good inside.

  75. Deborah Baxter says:

Love your post. Got my first calender. Love it. I ordered your past Willards. Can hardly wait for them to arrive. Enjoy your evening.

  76. Vicki Gray says:

Just made scones and devoured a couple w. pear jam for tea. Earlier had “Sunday Roast” with a fig/garlic chutney I brought from The Garlic Farm on the Isle of Wight, my ancestral home. Today’s a beautiful day in Iowa and we must savor those when they come in January. Thanks for making things warm and cozy — no matter the weather — with your blog..

  77. Karen Volinski says:

Oh, Susan, thanks for another chance to comment! I was saving up your last few posts to savor with some tea. When I checked, you were talking about tea and teapots! I always admired your Emma heart teapot, and like you said, it goes with everything! So I’m wishing for Vanna to bring me good luck and enjoying a cup of tea as I catch up on what you’ve been doing, that’s the real prize! Thanks!

  78. Sue Stoodt says:

It’s Sunday evening and we’re getting ready for Downton, and behold, a lovely post from you. What a beautiful way to enjoy the end of the weekend. Thank you, Susan, for bringing so much love and light to our lives! XOXO

  79. Julie says:

Looking for to Downton Abbey tonight from Michigan. Weather here in the mitten has been mild today…..mid 30’s. Felt like Spring!

  80. Donna says:

As always you delight. Loved the collection of Terriers!

  81. mary says:

Due in part to your wonderful blog and encouraging travel, my granddaughter and I will be traveling to Scotland in May.

  82. nellie says:

Loving that terrier collection, and you and Joe gave a really nice addition to it!

It sounds like the perfect Sunday where you are! Just the image of contentment!

Winter brings along some special treats and pleasures. Let’s be sure to enjoy them! That includes that PBS presentation tonight! Enjoy!

    xo Nellie

  83. Carol Johnson says:

So enjoy your posts long or short! Makes me want to move to your neck of the woods maybe one day… You must look up Big Crosby singing “Oh you must have been a beautiful baby.” I played this and sang it to my kids as they were growing up, they loved it. I have now used it on my “baby sons” Senior page instead of some mushy thing recalling all his years in a kind of obituary state. Can’t wait for him to see it! What a surprise, pictures from his life ending with a very large picture taking up the whole page, of him in his white tie and wing tips looking like the Great Gatsby! And baby look at you now!!!

When you were only startin’, to go to kindergarten, I bet you drove the other child’s wild . . . My mom used to sing that too!

In my next life, I want to live in the little cottage pictured in your post. It gives ‘charming’ a whole new meaning. Eagerly awaiting Downton as well. Have you ever been to Biltmore Estate in Asheville, NC? Wonderful place. Starting Feb. 5, they’re having an exhibition featuring costumes from Downton Abbey. I’m so there!

How I would love to spend a Sunday in your house. It sounds devine on a cold winter’s day. It started out very cold this morning and ended up in the 40’s and raining. Don’t know what to wear these days.
    Happy Downton Abbey watching.

I first discovered Emma B. in England more than 25 years ago and it’s been love, love, love ever since. For those of you who do not have your own mug, order one! Why do we have “favorite” mugs? It’s not only the color, pattern, size but also the weight of the pottery and the way it feels in your hand. I have tea every day out of one…
Very fun, gals, to read all your comments. I feel like I know you.
