Happy Monday!

HAPPY MONDAY GIRLFRIENDS!  MUSICA

The Fairy Tale Girl

Those are words from my new book, THE FAIRY TALE GIRL ~ I’m designing bookmarks for it now, I think I’ll put this on one of them . . . I am so excited . . . the book is at the printer ~ it won’t be long now!  I just received the color proofs . . . and thought you would like to see.

The fairy Tale Girl color proofs

The printer sent these sample pages so I can check the color and the cut-lines and make sure everything is being printed inside the borders.  They looked pretty good to me!  They wouldn’t let me keep them, wah, I had to okay them and send them back!   Thank goodness for cameras or I might not believe it happened.

Fairy2

I had to paint fairies for the new book, here is one of them, I love her.  We have these tiny blue butterflies here on the Island that come for only a couple of weeks in the spring and float down the dirt road with us in the mornings, two or three at a time.  Like magic. So I modeled my fairies after them, except of course for the hands and feet!  ANYWAY, I just wanted to say . . .

goodmorning

I’m still trying to catch up and get life back to normal.  I just finished designing the covers for the 2017 calendars.  The manufacturer always needs those first, for their catalog.  I have to say, painting “2017” was shocking.  I had to go check, I couldn’t believe I had the right date, but IMG_1459I did!  So they are done, and right now, I am deep in the throes of writing a new WILLARD ~ I figured it was about time!  You have all been so patient.  I checked with the Twitter girls last night and everyone said they wanted a long one, so prepare yourself.  You might have to take the day off.  After that, believe it or not, I will have nothing on my plate.  N O T H I N G, I can empty my trash and it will stay empty!  How do you like the sound of that?  I’m pretty excited.  I even got the title for the cover of book two of this Fairy Tale painted:

MVIsleOfDreams

That book is all written too, I’m way ahead of myself ~ I can work to finish it with art and photos more slowly and over time.  Right now, it’s time-out for fruits-of-labor enjoying! Already there’s more time for appreciating the little things that make life sweet, taking the camera out on our walk, having naps with old movies, eating lobsters, taking Jack out to the garden so he can munch the grass and I can admire things like this:

IMG_5318

The island is frothing over with hydrangeas these days . . . this one is growing under our bird feeders.

vineyard haven harbor

We went out to dinner the other night and watched the sun set over the harbor . . . such a gorgeous evening. Now you know why I call it Isle of Dreams.

Vineyard Haven Harbor

Hard to believe you can sit right there and have all that just for the price of a glass of wine and a plate of deep fried oysters.  Wow. Right?

August 2010 174

We went out for a walk after dinner last night, just as it was getting dark . . . middle of August and quiet, summer nights in our neighborhood, crickets cricketing.  You should hear what I hear right now, at 6 a.m. . . . . Not a sound from my studio window but birds singing, cool air flowing in and just the barest light in the blue sky beginning to show outside. My favorite time of day.

Count your blessings

That’s what I’m doing! There’s one of my blessings drinking out of the sink!

It takes me about four days to write and design a WILLARD, then I send it to Kellee so she can work her magic on it, which means we Jackplan to have it all ready to go by August 18th.  Once we push the “send button” it takes about three days for the whole thing to go, it has to be sent in batches (so we don’t destroy the Internets), so if you know anyone who would like to have a WILLARD, they’re free of course, and all you have to do is sign them up and boom, it will show up in their email box (if you don’t see yours, always check your spam folder because some computers might (rudely) block it).  And FYI, there will be a mighty fine Giveaway involved in this WILLARD ~ and all kinds of other surprises too. I’ve warned Vanna she might actually have to work when it comes out so she should plan for it! I’m a real tyrant with that girl.

  1. So nice to see another post from you here this morning Susan! Things are looking up! What a lovely teaser of the up and coming best seller! I, for one, cannot wait for it to fall through my letter box so I can devour it! I know we are all in for a real treat! Glad that the pressure is off for you now and that you can begin to enjoy some of what is left of summer. Happy Days! xoxo

  2. Pam says:

So exciting 🙂 . Have missed your science lessons on your walks and all the day to day goings on. I envy your closeness to the sea, we are in landlocked Leicestershire. We are off to Devon next month though so will have to stock up on coastal views and paddling in the rock pools!

  3. Karen says:

    Hi Susan,

That sunset looks magnificent. I love Martha’s Vineyard and the Cape. You are blessed to live in such a beautiful place. I didn’t realize that you had to proof the pages yourself, but it’s wonderful that you can see them ahead of time. I am in Sandwich, MA today and one of my favorite places to catch the sunset is in Woods Hole. There’s this cute little bakery called Pie in The Sky Bakery and Cafe. If you time it right, while you line up to buy their amazing pop overs the sunset shines in their window perfectly. Have a great day! Karen

  4. Winnie Nielsen says:

Yay, Susan!! So wonderful to hear that things are all coming together perfectly for you too. It has been a year of such dedicated work for you!! Of course, I cannot wait to see the new book and mine is on reserve from your opportunity to get in the queue for some of the first copies.

I am delighted to hear that Blog Daddy enjoyed all of our birthday wishes to him. He is special indeed and a treasure for all of us. Thank-you for sharing him with us too. I miss my Dad and love having another Dad to pamper and send hugs to. Enjoy your upcoming light work calendar and the rest of the gorgeous Summer at Martha’s Vineyard!

  5. Deborah in Odessa, Tx says:

Good morn’n. I have a little question….or request…I would love for you to print the other Willards for sale. I ordered the older ones love them. I like to have real literature in my hands…and your art work. I would buy for sure , for sure.

    • sbranch says:

There have been so many . . . go look HERE . . . all the old willards are there for you to read. I like things in my hands too, real books, but this book would be, with all the photos and things, REALLY FAT!

  6. Kathy T says:

Your book looks wonderful and so does the island. Here in Houston it has been over 100 degrees every day for at least a couple of weeks now AND humid! On my way to northern California to visit my daughters soon-looking forward to cooler weather, seeing the ocean and seeing them as well. Almost as good as Marthas Vineyard!

    • sbranch says:

It will be fun to get away. We have RAIN today! Wonderful and cool and the garden really needs it.

      • pat addison (cave junction, OR) says:

be warned Kathy, its warming up in Northern CA. and look out for all the fires burning there, seems to be about 6 or 7 now, mostly burning near San Francisco, Redding or Sacramento and up in Tahoe.

  7. How LOVELY to hear from you! So exciting to see your page proofs – and 2017 calendars! A little intimidating to me that you’re already thinking so far ahead – LOL – Im barely planning into the next couple of months! Maybe I should try it ;0). Glad you’re taking some time to relax and enjoy that beautiful island while summer is still around and its so wonderful. Will be looking forward to the Willard! Sending love to you and Joe and the kitties!

  8. Lynn Cooper says:

I love your design of the fairy. Do you think you could use that design for a crown or tiara for young girls to wear? I never met a little girl that did not enjoy wearing fairy wings and wearing some kind of crown or tiara on their head.

    • sbranch says:

Me either . . . I don’t know, I haven’t thought about it too much yet. Just enjoying her new existence in the world!

      • sondra fox says:

My husband & I were in Vegas watching a Cher show & sitting in front of us was a group of five grown women, all wearing tiaras. So cute. Even grown girls love wearing tiaras! (Sandy from Chihuahua Flats)

  9. Cindy A. says:

Your opening graphic sounds just like what our youngest daughter, who is now 20, expects to do in life. She’s not yet married and as far as we know doesn’t even have a boyfriend, but she and her dad have planted the roses and she has a kitty that looks just like Jack! Hopefully, but not any time soon, her prince will come and she will indeed live happily ever after. Thank you for such a beautiful post and for photos that make me long to be at the beach again. So looking forward to getting my hands on your new book!

  10. lin rader says:

Oh, the lovely sunsets! The best things in life ARE free! Before I married, I grew up on the shores of Lake Erie. I loved lying in bed at night listening to the fog horns on the freighters as they sailed the lake. That lonesome, eerie sound was always a comfort to me. And then to awaken to the lovely sunrises over the lake. Peace supreme! Living there piqued my fascination with lighthouses. Have seen all of them on the Lake Huron side of Michigan, now shall start on the Lake Michigan side. They are haunting and lovely and mysterious, and I have a lighthouse room like you have a peter rabbit room. Visitors love that room, as yours do the bunny room. So happy your “siege” is over and shall be awaiting the new Willard! One of your fairies just zipped by beckoning me outside to enjoy the lovely smell after a rain. Isn’t God’s world gorgeous?! Blessings!!

  11. Lorene says:

I can hardly wait for Fairy Tale Girl! I get butterflies (or maybe it’s Fairies) whenever I think about it arriving in my mail. Meanwhile I am content to read A Fine Romance for the third time 🙂 What magical place you live in Susan!

  12. Pat Johnson says:

AHHHHHH & Thank God!!!! After reading the blog I found myself giving a sigh of relief – for YOU! You have worked so hard and every step of the way (even when we didn’t hear from you) we were cheering you on. I absolutely love the fairy! It provides that magical moment that is needed every once in a while. And the walks you were able to take are HEAVEN!! I have to admit I feel liberated since you have gotten back into the everyday things – I know you have a ways to go but hey you are on your way. The Busy Lady is back among the Active Life of FUN and ENJOYMENT! I am enjoying the cabin in Newport, Washington – and loving some of the rain – I say “some” because we really do not have enough here either. So sad…….but life goes on. I loved my trip to Moulton’s Ranch Cabins in Jackson Hole, WY. What a gift to myself (hehe). Sending you tons of hugs and smiles……….Pat

  13. Tara Baker says:

I’m so glad that you’re out from under all of those book deadlines and enjoying a bit of summer… walks, lobster, flowers, and kitties. My goodness you work hard! I love your blog so very much and I can not wait to read your book! Blessing to you, tara

  14. Mia Sophia says:

    Hi Susan…
Happiness is your beautiful correspondence updates…you make my heart sing!
I cannot wait to see the latest and greatest book from you. Another beauty is in the works! My S.B. bookshelf has a spot reserved. Enjoy some well deserved time off. Hugs to you and yours…

  15. I can’t wait for your book to come out!! I ordered a copy for my buddy in Concord, MA who I miss so much since moving to Kentucky. We read “A Fine Romance” at the same time and called each other just to share our delight. Bless you for being a sentimental sort just like us. Your books are magic!!!

    Thank you!
    Barb Bromley

  16. Kathie Ferko says:

    Hello,
How great reading another of your wonderful blogs. So glad the books are done…the proof pics look beautiful…as usual. It is so humid where I am…I can’t wait for cooler fall weather.
It is raining intermittently today, but really humid. Hope the storms cool it off some.
The pictures of the harbors ,being all pink ,were lovely. I hate living in a landlocked area of the country. All our vacations are near some body of water…whether the Finger Lakes, Cape Cod, Maine, or just a jaunt to the Jersey shore. Being around water refreshes and restores my soul!!! Looking forward to Willard in my email…always a joy to read.

Hope all is well with you and all the girlfriends(and Joe, of course) !!!! Have a great rest of the summer!

  17. Kathie Ferko says:

    PS…love the faires!!!

  18. You’re back!! Yippeee and Yaaaaay! 🙂 Missed you bunches! Can’t wait for the new book!!! 🙂 I’ve been re-reading A FINE ROMANCE because my son and daughter in law took a cruise for their honeymoon. It wasn’t to England, but it was a ship on water and the photos they took were so beautiful!
And I’m eager to read the new Willard. Thank you for writing that for all of us. 🙂

  19. Miss Marion says:

Not long now! This is so exciting and the proofs are fantastic! Like everyone else, I can barely wait!

  20. Mary, St.Louis says:

so good to be hearing from you again…I can’t wait to get the book ! Glad that you can relax and enjoy your Isle of Dreams again. You have been working so hard, and we all missed you. Beautiful photos, as always. I especially loved the hydrangea…my second favorite, just behind roses. kisses for the kitties ~ and you ! xxx

  21. Lisa Jorgensen says:

So excited to hear the book is done!! Can’t wait to read Willard and the new book. Bet the kitties are happy you are done, getting lots of attention.
Enjoy the rest of your summer moments, you deserve it.

  22. Judy in Ohio says:

Yaaaaaaaay, Susan!! How excited you must be to be done with at least this part of your loooooong stretch!! (As my husband always says, “Now you can sleep the sleep o the righteous!) 😉

And what a great idea you gave us to sign our friends up for “Willard”!…So now I have 5 more girlfriends who will be receiving a “surprise” gift from you…(and me!) 🙂

Hope you will soon be enjoying a complete and full and VERY well-deserved rest.
And we will be looking forward to reading about your adventures again! (And reading your NEW BOOK!!!…Can’t wait!)

    Take care, dear girl…
    And HAPPY TRAILS!

    <3

    • Judy in Ohio says:

P.S. I hope that Vanna is getting plenty of rest…
for all of her busy-ness that is coming up! 🙂

    • sbranch says:

SO exited about WILLARD — starts going out on Tuesday, thank you for thinking of your girlfriends, hope they like it! xoxo Judy!

  23. Wendy Louise says:

Good Morning Sunshine, even on a rainy day! The feeling you have is so contagious, just reading your words puts me right there. I have been busy redecorating a new guest room in my home. My daughter moved out in July and I am transforming her room into a fairy tale room. I just painted it a beautiful Benjamin Moore Goldtone, rearranged the antique furniture, and now I get to put lovely books that my little granddaughters will read one day. Starting with an antique Little Women illustrated by Tasha Tudor. Then I will put my collection of all the Jane Austin books. Oh I am just starting but I know it will be just as inviting as my Peter Rabbit guest room I made after the boys moved out years ago. So much life love to be filled with. I am over the moon so happy for you and us,your books will definitely be in my Fairy Tale room. Thank-you for all your Sunshine! Love, Wendy-Louise oxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxo

    • Wendy Louise says:

Hi Susan, I have written you a lovely note, well I believe it is lovely , about 3 days ago and it is still in “your comment is in moderation ” mode. Did you not get it or did it go out in never, never land. If you get this one I want you to know how excited I am for you and thank- you for sharing so much of a great thing! Can’t wait to read your book. Wendy-Louise

      • sbranch says:

You did write a lovely note, I remember answering it, I “approved” it . . . and it really should be there . . . Thank you dear, sorry about the gremlins!

    • sbranch says:

That room is going to be a treasured memory for your granddaughters someday . . . making magic Wendy Louise!

  24. Rosinda says:

Hello Susan! Eeek! I’m so excited for the release of your new book! I can hardly believe it. Seems like just the other day when I met you and Joe at the Fine Romance book signing in Michigan! Maybe this time, you’ll be able to make a few stops here in Canada! Here’s hoping! XO

  25. Marie (Long Beach, California) says:

So excited to hear from you, loved this post! C O N G R A T U L A T I O N S Susan… you must feel like you’re in a dream having your wonderful everyday life back. I’m so happy for you and can’t wait to read The Fairy Tale Girl. Life is crazy good! ♥

  26. vicki says:

So good to have you back….you were greatly missed. Can’t wait until the new book is in my mailbox! Wishing you a time of rest and simple pleasures after all your hard work. Tell Vanna not to sleep too late when the Willard comes out!
    Hugs! Vicki

  27. deborah t. norling says:

so much excitement and creative energy whirling and swirling around you and into our lives because of you.. .I love living the artist’s life through you !!

  28. Robyn Brown says:

I’m so excited to hear your book is at the printer. Makes me all tingly! I can’t wait to get mine in my hot little hands!! And you’re already done with the next one but for the artwork? WOW. I am very excited to get both of these books. You’re art is so inspirational.

  29. Marva says:

I am so glad you have finished your book. I am anxiously awaiting my copy and will enjoy reading it as soon as it arrives. What an accomplishment and now you can sit back and enjoy the end of summer before your next project comes along. Blessings!

  30. Paula says:

That is so exciting! Very happy for you (and us too 😉 That is such an accomplishment, I can’t imagine doing it, but for some reason it seems like I can imagine how happy and content it must make you feel. Enjoy your rest and some lazy summer days! I think if I was you I would have made some color copies of the proofs before I sent them back, just to keep looking at!! I wanted to ask you if you ever get the “Victorian Trading Co.” catalog? Or go on their website, they have some neat things, one reminded me of you, it was a “Pub Cookbook”. You may have one just like it but thought I’d mention it. Congratulations!!

    • sbranch says:

I have gone there, so fun! I’ll go look at the book, I do have one called Pub cookbook, but maybe it’s different!

  31. Monique says:

Still at a loss as to why your posts don’t get to me..so i have missed a few..HB to your dad:)
So lucky to have each other!
I cannot wait for your new book..
    I know I have told you before..but I Love MV♥

  32. Monique says:

PS wonder why TFG is available for pre-order at Amazon.ca but not .com..
October is the release date right Susan?

    • sbranch says:

Yes, it is ~ so good to have spies, I had no idea. I think because we wanted the distributors to have it for the Independent Bookstores, they are the ones putting it at Amazon. We are still learning how this works! But, even though I sort of wish it wasn’t there, I guess we have no control and on one level, it’s VERY exciting! I just finished writing WILLARD too. It’s a red letter day!

  33. Donna Bradley says:

    Hi Susan!
Let me just say, I think you have out done yourself once again by the look of the proof pages of the new book! I can hardly wait to turn every lovely page! Now, you must take time to enjoy the little things in life that make each day special. Thank you so much for wanting to share your thoughts and artist talents with all your girlfriends! You’re AMAZING!
    Love from Texas,
    Donna

    • sbranch says:

Oh thank you Donna! You don’t know how wonderful it is to share it all with you and our Girlfriends!!! Means the world. xoxo

  34. Susan Dear, when you gave the quote right at the beginning of your post that comes straight from your new book, I had a deje vu feeling, because I could have said the very same thing for my own life way back when. And I got the idea from those very same movies (not to mention a very Harlequin romance novels — hehe)!

Perhaps that’s why I feel such a kinship with you, as many of your blogging girlfriends admit, we all seem to be cut from a similar cloth.

It’s wonderful to share these moments of life together.

Sending hugs and cheers for success and completion, and for time to enjoy fruits of your labour with all those near and dear to you.

Brenda (btw, I go by Bren over on Twitter when you see me there)
    xox

    • sbranch says:

It’s always been my favorite part of book writing, and the more I’ve done it, the stronger the feeling has grown that we all have so much more in common than we do differences. For some reason our culture concentrates on the latter, but I love the former.

  35. Monique says:

    I will keep checking:)

  36. Shannon says:

Yay! Susan! You will be able to blog about fall and Christmas! Those are my favorite blog posts! I read and re-read those and live vicariously though your posts. Southern California has a drought and seasons kind of pass us by

  37. Frances Fowler says:

Hooray, a new Willard! And new books to look forward to, and new 2017 calendars! Which I will look forward to as much as the 2016 one I haven’t bought yet! Summer on your island must be beautiful. I like to read Glady’s Taber’s Stillmeadow Road by month; August is wonderful to me because it means we will start to see the first transitions to fall towards the third week, and for those of us in North Georgia, that’s good news — we’re tired of the worst of the heat and humidity! I would think Martha’s Vineyard would be like those at Stillmeadow — cooler nights and sunny days that don’t have the AC straining and fighting battles with the humidity. Most of the French hydrangeas here bloom their biggest and best before now; yours is such a delicate blue! And what is it with cats and sinks! Enjoy your very well deserved time off after long weeks of ultra focus mode. So looking forward to seeing it all!

    • sbranch says:

I know, it’s 2015 . . . the 2016 are for sale, and I’m working on the 2017. Yikes! I agree, Gladys by the month is perfection! Thank you Frances! Stay cool!

  38. Janice says:

I’m not sure what Willards are but I signed up for it.. lol.. The hydrangeas are beautiful in color.. The fairy tale girl pictures look wonderful from what I can see.. hopefully will be able to get a copy.. so love my visits with you they always make me feel better with love Janice.. Have some good me time..

  39. Debbie Ferguson says:

Oh I am so glad that You are back! I’ve missed the less than famous Susan we all grew to love. Longing for the Pics from the garden, walk’s, quilt’s,dish towels, kitty’s, table settings………. reminders for what we might want to get done that month etc….oh the little thing’s in your world.

    Debbie in Ca.

    • sbranch says:

I’m still not famous, just working hard. We’re still needing to produce an income in this house, so in-between Willards and posts on the blog, I need to try and do things that pay the bills. Someday, if everything goes OK, I’ll get to retire and be a full time blogger!

      • Tawni urrutia says:

Good morning Susan! I’d like to chime in on this…now that you have a publicist(YAY!), I think your first three books should be marketed to brides to be. Available on registries at places like Williams Sonoma or Sur La Table! I mean let’s get real, those books are right up there with good knifes and cloth napkins! I was so blessed to get those books in my first year of marriage, they are tightly woven into the Urrutia family fabric. Once The Big Three(that’s what I call them) are in someone’s home, they are heart bound to have all of their companions!
        ❌⭕️❌⭕️,
        Tawni Urrutia, in Lodi, Ca

  40. Elaine McGuire says:

to happily quote and misquote Leslie Gore… “Sunshine, lollipops and rainbows, everything that’s wonderful is what I feel when reading your blog dear”!!!
thank you for brightening up my day, I can’t wait to read the new book. Love the art, the photos and the inspiration that you so generously share. xoxo

  41. Gert~Iowa says:

Oh how exciting to see your post!! And I saw that word Willard! Eeeks! I’m so happy!! Your pages are so sweet!! I can see why you’d like to keep them…. The sunset is gorgeous…doesn’t God give free beauty? smile… How blessed you are! (Love that picture of Jack having a drink of water!!!) Enjoy your down time…finally…lol

  42. Deborah in Odessa, Tx says:

Thanks for answering my previous ??s about Willards….it’s okay. I will read them here….can’t have a really fat stack of Willards. Looking forward to the next one….and the book will be here soon. My fall reading fun.

  43. Jack says:

Egad, Yoiks and Gadzooks ….what to my wondering eyes should appear – in my mail , but a most wondrous “Birthday Book” as prepared by girl friend , “Saint” Mary Heiland ! Can you imagine , a “one of a kind” composition of all that was on your blog , celebrating my 92nd Birthday .
My neighbors called it “awesome” and Joe Baxley called it the “Holy Blog” and believe me it was beautiful , with the pictures and all 300 some odd comments from all the girlfriends
printed out and bound with such a Happy Birthday decorated cover!
I may have to go with you on your next signing tour , to hand out signed copies of this
    gorgeous tribute, Dad

    • sbranch says:

Thank you from me to all the Girlfriends and to you Mary H, for your creative thoughtfulness! Woweeee, he read the whole thing to me!

      • Mary in Phoenix says:

So happy that you’re happy:) … and he’s happy:) … with the birthday book ♥ NINETY seemed like a milestone !!! … as did 300+ birthday greetings (OMG) from the girlfriends !!! So why not print off the greetings, add a cover and back page with your adorable artwork (was sure you would approve 🙂 ) … and have it spiral bound with a clear cover at Kinkos. Easy peasy … especially compared to your books … haha … and something he can read over and over and share with his friends 🙂 Wasn’t sure who was calling me from “Sedona” and then lo and behold … “Hi Mary, It’s Jack Stewart” 🙂 The kindness and caring comes through in the voice and the conversation as it does on the blog. Such a fine man … his advice, humor, thoughtfulness, concern and loving nature … all beyond compare. He loves the girlfriends as much as we love him ♥ And I LOVE the idea of him coming along on your next book tour .. you might have to book a stadium for that one 🙂 xoxo P.S. Heard it’s 100 degrees in Cottonwood today. Stay cool Jack! Phoenix is a blistering 112 degrees and only getting hotter tomorrow 🙁

  44. Joan Lesmeister says:

“Oh what a beautiful morrrrrning!” All the words to that old song, flitting around in my head as I read this new blog! Lovely to have you “coming my way”…….!!! Wonderful, book to the printers, my book in my hand soooooon!!! I’ve been rereading “A Fine Romance”, again (which I’ve done many times!), getting warmed up for the “Fairy Tale Girl”! A trillion x&o’s & congratulations on your new book! Lots of “airing” time now, you certainly deserve it – more beautiful sunsets & sunrises for your full enjoyment! And, much love!!!

  45. jackie bienemann says:

I love your fairy! So glad you can enjoy the rest of your summer, so glad to hear a new Willard is on it’s way. You are too good to us! Cannot wait to get my hands on your book, those pages are beautiful. The sunset was so pretty and peaceful looking, enjoy many more, you so deserve it!

    • sbranch says:

Thank you Jackie! I’ve been busy working on the WILLARD . . . but today we are going OUT to celebrate Joe’s Birthday and F R E E D O M!

  46. jamie hopkins says:

I can’t wait for the new book! So I read that Jack was in the grass, does this mean he gets to go outside now? I thought he was only an inside kitty. 🙂

    • sbranch says:

I carry him. I sit down with him and hold him while he eats grass. He loves it. It’s our new thing. Hopefully he’ll forget all about it next winter!

  47. Oh, the endless delights of your post, Susan! Your dad’s comments here blessed my soul — and made me miss my dad just a little, even though I know that heaven is unspeakably glorious. Loved your photo of the house with its lights on —- perfectly cozy and lovely. Sending blessings from here on the farm.

Thank you Thank you Thank you! Looking forward to the Willard! Would love to get my hands on this new one! I pre-ordered a Fairy Tale Girl for myself and one for my Aunt Margie who is 90 years young this year. She loved the last book and will be thrilled to get the new one!

Freedom! from so much work. I am getting close to finishing a quilt I started in Feb.,2015 as a BOM. I can’t wait to wrap it up and get it quilted. 3 months left and then assemble the whole thing. Then off to quilt it! Don’t get me wrong; I love the whole process but…I want it finished. Haven’t selected a new one for next project but there are a few UFO’s to complete too. Thank heavens for the rain! The garden was parched and the green beans are almost ready to can. Yum!

    • sbranch says:

I know, we love the process, and won’t give up, but can’t wait to see the finished thing! Good for you Susan! A treasure for the ages.

  53. Hi Susan! What a treat to find a new post today. Wow! You are indeed one of my blessings in life and for that I am grateful. Such joy you bring. I am so excited about the up coming book and now, Willard too? I just knew August would excite me this year. Did I read right: you bring Jack into the garden? How? With a leash? I know how protective you are of your littlest guy. Off to hang a washed quilt out to dry (don’t we love that?). Thanks for being you. xo

    • sbranch says:

I hold him, now I set him in the grass, and he munches and I pet him. He doesn’t try to move. I’m not letting him just go, and I don’t think he wants to, but he thinks the grass is DELICIOUS!! The boy needed his veggies!

  54. Elaine in Toronto says:

I saw Joe and Jack’s picture on twitter. My goodness, don’t they both look full of mischief! Happy birthday, Joe. Hope it’s been a lovely day full of surprises. Hugs.

Hi, Susan! Hi to everyone! Just wanted to pop in and say “Congratulations!!!!” to you on ALL that you have accomplished… a book at the printers, calendars for 2017 (that really is hard to believe) and another book ready to be finished! Wow. That is absolutely wonderfully amazing and phenomenal. I am sure you are SO ready to relax and enjoy those gorgeous summer evenings on your Isle of Dreams.
I am sure your dad had a fabulous birthday; what a blessing to be able to celebrate it with him.

Have a fabulous Friday evening… it’s 90 degrees here… true summer weather! Again, congratulations to you and Happy Birthdays to your dad and Joe!

    • sbranch says:

      • Susan Hammersley Simon (in Illinois) says:

SO very glad to hear that… I am already looking forward to it! Hope your birthday dinner with Joe was wonderful. We spent yesterday celebrating our 5 year old granddaughter’s birthday with lots of laughter, giggles and joy. She starts Kindergarten on Wednesday… where does the time go????? She got a new “kitchen” for her bedroom and all kinds of pots, pans, a tea kettle and food, and we had a tea party, just the two of us. (And that made me think of you!) It was so special and wonderful.
Have a beautiful day… another summery, hot, humid day here… enjoying each and every one.

    Happy birthday, Joe!

  57. Judy in Ohio says:

Good morning, Susan! So excited that your major part of your work is done and you will be able to enjoy at least part of your summer! Still some left…but can fall be far around the corner? (I did hear that we here in the East will be having a milder winter this year! 😀 >Yaaaay!!< Although I LOVE the snow, my roses do not so much…and I miss them…So less cold & more flowers is something I can live with…a least every so often!)

I have a question that is completely unrelated to any of your recent blogging, but I am hoping you can possibly help me. I remember a quote that you had written (somewhere!) and I cannot find it anywhere. I have even tried to "google" it for the last half hour or so…and it is preventing me from sleeping! (I know…kinda pathetic…This is how my little mind works! :0) It is a quote something along the lines of "she cries…heart is full of happiness" …that is kinda the idea…A beautiful quote, though my thinking (& so description) is not too clear.I just lost track of it…and if it is not too much trouble, could you please help me?(If it is too much trouble, please don't concern yourself…I just thought you might know…right off the top of your head!..Thanks so much!!)

I am so excited about your new Willard also! I signed up about 5 of my friends to receive it too! (Great idea…Thanks for giving it to us!!) 😀

Have a great weekend…and thanks for all the hard work that you do to bring joy into the hearts of all of us!! We appreciate it more than we can ever express.

“Food, glorious food…” Your blog is food for the soul, and the proofs of your new book are a true feast for the eyes! You always make life look better and brighter…

As with everyone else, I’m anxiously awaiting my pre-ordered copy of the new book. I only hope when you plan the book tour that you’ll include The Woodlands, Texas’ Barnes & Noble on the route. The Woodlands is a wonderful community on the north edge of Houston, and by the time you’ll be doing the tour we’ll have probably cooled down to a nice, fallish 80 or so… :). Yep — right now, it’s Houston…it’s August…it’s hot, humid and miserable. In other words — business as usual. My grass is extra-crunchy, but your blog is a breath of cool ocean air. THANK YOU!

Enjoy your newfound freedom as long as it lasts — it’s never quite enough, is it? And a big happy birthday to your number 1 boyfriend!

  59. Peggy Cooper, Pueblo, CO says:

It’s always so wonderful to read a new post! I can’t believe it took me until Saturday to read it since you posted on Monday. I haven’t been writing a book or anything, so don’t know where the time goes. But when you’re retired, you tend to think, maybe I’ll do that tomorrow, and tomorrow never comes. I just finished my term as president of a social group of 140+ ladies who meet for a luncheon program attended by about 70 of us each month, plus many satellite groups. Every month I wrote a president’s message in the newsletter, and have to thank you so much for being an inspiration for these. I didn’t plagiarize anything, but did use your calendar for ideas of what to write about each month, and it gave me a starting point away from writer’s block. I’m looking forward to the new books!!!!! Enjoy your new more leisurely time – especially with fall coming up before we know it. And Happy Birthday to Joe. I know you couldn’t do all you do without his love and support.

  60. Elizabeth in Montana says:

Hello Susan and Girlfriends. I haven’t been here in a while, it’s been a very sad and difficult few months for me. My mom left for Heaven. She was 91 on November 14 and passed away January 11. I miss her so and there is a big hole in my heart. I still have all the cards so many of you sent her for her 90th birthday. We looked at them often and she was so touched by your kindness. My husband filed for divorce in October and I’m still in the midst of that ugliness. I was very ill after my mom died and was pretty sure my life was over. I’m finally better, living with a friend and 4 of my beloved cats. I have a job interview next week and hopefully will be back teaching in September. I’m looking forward to catching up on all the posts I’ve missed. Thank you Susan for being a “bright spot”. You do more good than you’ll ever know. Love, Elizabeth

    • sbranch says:

Oh Elizabeth, I’m so sorry!!! Very sad times. Sending love and wishing only good things for you from now on.

      • Rhonda D. says:

So sorry to hear this sad news from you Elizabeth. I will keep you in my prayers. Things will eventually get better, but in the meantime keep your faith strong and find peace in Susan’s blog and the girlfriends. I have found so much strength and healing here in Smallville as I’ve walked the trenches in life. Sending hugs your way.

    • Chris Wells In Knickerbocker, W TX says:

      Elizabeth,
Saying a prayer for you. Changes are so hard! But please remember that the opposite of change is stagnation. It is how we pick up the pieces and move on that is SO important. Believe me when I tell you that we have ALL been there in one way or another. We are here for you whenever you need us! Find the joy in your life, that I know your mother would want you to find and count your blessings……like those 4 wonderful cats!!
      Chris

      • sbranch says:

Perfect, opposite of change is stagnation. Plus, the whole thing about not really having a choice, such is life in all it’s amazing ups and terrible downs.

        • lin rader says:

Oh, Elizabeth, you shall be in my prayers. In 2011, in January, I too lost my wonderful mom. She was 91 also. Grief is a strange thing. The pain can often be unbearable, but the more we go on with life, the easier it is to bear. Time is healing in and of itself, so we must make time our friend, not our enemy. Fill your time with loving thoughts, friendly smiles and being all that you can be, using the gift of teaching that God so blessed you with. Soon the pain of loss and love shall fade into the new life you have made for yourself. As Blog Daddy said, there is no one youer than you! Blessings!
P.S. Kiss those kitties for me.

    • Susan Morgon ( an Ohio gal in SoCal ) says:

What a hard time you’ve been through! It’s so nice that you have that wonderful friend to be there for you, along with those four sweeties. Fingers crossed that you’ll be able to be back in a classroom in the coming year. Please keep us posted. If not that, though, God will have something else just for you. Saying a quick prayer for you!

    • Tawni urrutia says:

      Oh Elizabeth!
I’m heart sick for you. I pray for peace, and love and joy for you. You sound brave, I so admire that! Please keep us posted on how you’re feeling. Best of everything to you my fellow girlfriend!

Susan, what I wouldn’t give to see the contents of the waste can in your photo – all clever and pretty bits and pieces of your talent I’m sure! More blogging coming soon. Had a computer glitch yesterday which resulted in accidentally upgrading iPhoto — don’t let this happen to you!!! Waiting on the phone right now for Apple Genius to come save me.

      • Mac vs PC says:

        Dear Obi-Wan Kenobi,

For the love of Mike, still waiting on Apple. Oy vey. This has given me even more pause as I consider making the big change f/PC to Mac.

After much research, a bit less hair and more fluffy adipose to my body and I have yet to buy a new laptop. Paralysis by analysis.

Daresay, I am compelled to start writing, properly that is.

May I please ask if your predominant reason for going with a Mac is because of your art or are there other reasons? I have a specific project planned and it may include photographs.

I believe you know how special AFR has been to me. It has brought exponential joy. It IS my go-to book for all seasons. Nearly all x3 cases of AFR have been given away. The last one I gave away was to a young, vibrant and animated woman who helped me navigate my way through purchasing a cell phone. Give me a root canal without Novocaine anyday.

If you would please be so kind as to keep this anonymous it would be greatly appreciated.

Power to the moxy that IS Susan Branch.

        • sbranch says:

I love Mac. I just don’t like changes! Re-learning, isn’t my cup of tea, but once I do it, and it’s done, I’m happy. Mac, yeah! Especially for photos. They teach you how, for free. Don’t analyze, go for it, I think you will be THRILLED. It’s a wonderful thing. Thank you for your kind words! Power to the Moxy that is Mac vs PC!

      • Chris Wells In Knickerbocker, W TX says:

Most of my upgrades have never been that!

        • sbranch says:

Well it’s out there lurking. There are some REALLY good things about it. I just spent time with Apple on the phone, have it figured out. More work for the way I do it, but at least I CAN do it, and I get the really good new things too.

  62. Rhonda D. says:

Such an exciting post Susan. It’s good to have you back. Wonderful photos of MV, your beautiful Isle of Dreams, and pages from your new book (and Jack too). Be still my heart….blue hydrangeas, a lit house at dusk, sunset at the beach, and a sneak peek of The Fairy Tale Girl. Makes me feel like I just had summer vacation and Christmas all in one. Looking forward to seeing you enjoy the rest of your summer and fall season, getting some much needed R & R. You’ve been working so hard to see this dream come true for all of us. I don’t think I have to put anything else on my Christmas list this year. So thankful for all you bring into our lives. Sending love and hugs your way. xo

Hi Susan! I am SO happy for you and The Fairy Tale Girl! I am so looking forward to receiving my copy!! I read A Fine Romance over and over! Just this past weekend, I took A Fine Romance with me to tea at The Talking Teacup in Chalfont, PA. Just me, myself and I – and you and all your lovely adventures! I was seated on the porch overlooking the garden and had the loveliest time having tea while reliving the magic of your book! The darling young girl who brought me my tea commented that she loves to bring her book to tea and wished more people would come to tea to enjoy a book on their own. It’s so wonderfully relaxing! Looking forward to taking The Fairy Tale Girl out to tea soon! 🙂
    Hugs, (another) Sue 🙂

  72. Claudia says:

Good morning Susan. I decided to go to my “happy place” this morning, and have been made even happier by the discovery of your new post and the anticipation of a new Willard! I can’t wait to read Fairy Tale Girl, and get ready for 2016 with your new calendar too. Martha’s Vineyard has been calling to us; we hope to visit in 2016 and experience its magic first hand.

  73. Good Morning Susan, So lovely to read your blog this morning! I too have been spending time reading. I’m currently halfway through Doris Kearns Goodwin’s, No Ordinary Time, about Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt. One quote, in particular reminded me of my own upbringing and perhaps yours too? “… Roosevelt grew up in an atmosphere where affection and respect were plentiful, where the discipline was fair and loving, and the opportunity for self-expression abundant. The sense of being loved wholeheartedly by his parents taught Roosevelt to trust that the world was basically a friendly and agreeable place. “. And even when it’s not, when I read your blog, your stories, and your books I have a sense of this feeling that the world can be friendly and agreeable place – if we choose to live in such a way where we love others. You have such a lovely following a strong, smart, funny girlfriends. Thank you for sharing your creative spirit with us. Best, Lisa

    • sbranch says:

So nice to see you here Lisa . . . just clicked onto you over on Twitter so I know just who I’m talking to right now! xoxo

      • Such an interesting world these days to sit in our own rooms, enjoying a second cup (I know you are a tea drinker but I prefer a strong cup of coffee), snuggle up with our babies (mine is a blonde little spaniel, Lily), catch up on all the latest happenings, and connect with people individually, all over the planet. Love the the connections!

  74. Kathy Birling says:

I can’t wait to see the book, something fun to look forward to!

  75. Ikwig says:

One of the things I always love about your blog posts is that, nearly every time, somewhere there will be something that takes me back to my childhood. Sometimes it’s a photo or bit of art, but most often it’s words. Today it was your description of how lovely it was at 6 am as you sat writing this. I read those words and suddenly I was 13 years old again (an early riser even then) throwing open the window to the dawn world, simply to revel in the bird song and sniff the fresh air! Thank you!

By the way, you’ll be selling at least one extra 2016 calendar this year; the October page stole our hearts and, as my six-year-old daughter noted, “we must have it,” so have it we shall! Thank you again for your continued hard work!

  76. Nancee Hudson says:

Susan, you must be an amazing person because your art sure is!!! I’ve always enjoyed it ever since I purchased my first package of Susan Branch stickers. As a matter of fact, I’ve been working on my Susan Branch recipe binder in the last few days!! I received it as a gift (I kinda asked for it). :)). I can’t wait to read your Fairy Tale Girl book when it is released.

  77. Katie Saw says:

    Hi Susan,
Both my boys just drove off to their first day of high school. The house is quiet after a busy summer and I sat down in front of my computer and read Willard all the way through with no interruptions. Thank you. Katie Saw

  78. Carol Spence says:

I love your e-mails and your wonderful recipes! I sew and I also love your fabric – I make children’s aprons, both regular and crayon, and tote bags and they are really unique! Your books are really good. My sister (who lives in CA and I live in OH) and I took a trip to the New England area and just loved it! We went to antique shops and quilt shops and loved every minute of it!!!

  79. Carol Cameron says:

What a lovley way to start my morning by reading your new Willard. Have missed you and can’t wait for your new book and for the new calendar to add to my collection.

    • Carol Cameron says:

By the way – another wonderful Masterpiece series from across the pond to watch is Mr. Selfridge if you haven’t already. The 4th and final series I believe will follow Downton Abby next year.

  80. Dar says:

looking forward to your new book. Woke up to fog this morning on the Central Coast of California (I’m sure you remember those foggy morns). It will be a beautiful day despite the huge fire just over Cuesta Grade

  81. Sarah says:

Loved the Willard. We watched TURN last season and just found it too slow. We stayed with it until the end, but we wanted a faster mover. 🙂

Now, POLDARK. Ah yes. My daughter and I call him “Pol, dark, and handsome.” 🙂 We likey. It’s not Downton, but it sure has made the summer easier to get through while we wait for January.

  82. Diana Hartman says:

You just reminded me to get my Autumn Book off the shelf. The appetizers are so good !!!!!!! I have all your books Heart of the Home, Vineyard Seasons, Christmas Book and others. Whenever a season changes your books come out. Your blogs and Willard plus all your books are a pick me up. I can’t wait to receive my copy of Fairy Tale Girl. i just read Elizabeth’s post and hope everything gets better for her. I will say a prayer for her. Blessings to all.

  83. Valorie Joyner says:

Congratulations! i always feel that same way when i finish a quilt and put all the left over pieces, thread bits and such away. i do tend to leave it all out as i work, you never can tell if you might just need that itty bitty piece of black polkadot.
of course your “finish” is a much bigger deal, but i do know the feeling!
your Jack cat is the spitting image of Cleo my neighbor’s cat; sadly Cleo just met her demise via coyote. i can’t send your wonderful photos to my neighbor, just too soon. But… i do love to see him, and almost makes up for my being “cat-less” at the moment. Black & white cats Rule!

    • sbranch says:

A quilt is a huge big deal! I am always so impressed with every single inch of a handmade quilt. Coyotes! Really bad. So sorry. Hug her for me. xoxo

  84. Colleen Starr says:

I am so thrilled about your new book and cannot wait till it arrives on my doorstep.

  85. Diane Fogleman says:

    Hi Susan,
Just received your Willard posts and had to tell you how much I’ve enjoyed receiving them. I am a retired Acquisition Librarian and I remember many years ago, opening the box of books that held a copy of your new book, Vineyard Seasons, and falling in love with that book. Then racing to the local bookstore to get my own personal copy.
I read and reread that book…then waited anxiously for your next book to be published.
I can’t begin to tell you what a joy it has been to read, look at and use your recipes over the years. I love every single book of yours that I own.
So needless to say I will soon be at my local B&N ordering your new book.
Congratulations on your great art, writing, recipes and publishing career.
Keep those great books coming and I’ll keepng buying them.
    Diane

Hi Susan! What a wonderful surprise it was to see you on my computer this early morning here in warm, sunny, northern California! You are a perfect way to start the day! I can’t wait to read BOTH of your new books! Good for you and thank you very much! I have so enjoyed your books, recipe binder(I would still love one for the boys, as my son and 3 yr old g.son both love to cook:) goodies and EVERYTHING OF Susan Branch over the years! Your BEAUTIFUL watercolor artwork and writing are sooo inspiring! Thank you from the bottom of my heart for your awesome(and I use that word VERY seldom) site. It has to be in the top 5(you being # 1 of course)
on the internet! Really!! Now, for my order:) Hugs from Oakdale, on the way to Yosemite!

So looking forward to the Fairy Tail Girl book.

  89. Debbie Adams says:

Looking forward to the new book

  90. Sheila Hebert says:

I’m so excited for your next book. I bought Heart of the Home when it was first published. I kept an eye out and bought Vineyard Seasons as soon as it hit the book stores. I’ve been hooked ever since. My house doesn’t feel like home unless there’s a Susan Branch calendar hanging on my kitchen bulletin board. Holidays and special occasions wouldn’t be special without cooking something from one of your cookbooks! Your Best Biscuits recipe is a family favorite and the excitement is palpable when I announce that I’m making a batch (or two!). And now my boyfriend is a Susan Branch fan and addict. He’s constantly scouring used bookstores for copies of your books. If there’s a Twelve Step Program for this addiction, I DON’T want to know about it! 😉

Thanks for the joy and happiness you spread!

I always fill my own stocking at Christmas with your calendar. There is a spot on the fridge where nothing else is allowed to be! Ha! Still miss the days when you published a mini dessert calendar! Loved it! Looking forward to your new book!

I want to go buy school supplies with you. Even though I’m 65. Having read all your books and using your recipes as my old “stand-bys”, I feel like we grew up together. And, in a way, we did. Your memories of Fall and pictures of the Vineyard give me butterflies that I almost can’t stand!!!! I can smell the leaves burning in a pile by the street…jeans and sweatshirts, corduroy and tweed…pumpkins and gorgeous sugar maples. Long walks with my girlfriend kicking the leaves in from of us, talking about boys. Sigh.
    Thanks, girlfriend!

Ooh, this blog and the Willard were just what I needed today! Thank you!!! Also, I’ve come to realize recently that September is my favorite month, too. As an adult, I love the *idea* of Summer, more than the actual season itself (although who am I kidding, I still love it). Anyway, here’s to cooler days and a lot less humidity! I’ll make something from the Summer book tonight, as a gearing-down, last hurrah.

Susan, I love your books! My daughter has purchased them for me for my birthdays for the past several years. I have several but would love to have your new one to add to my collection. I love the handwritten script in them! Thanks so much for being so creative!

The world needs more positive input. Thank you for making all of our lives happiers. I cannot wait for the new book.

  99. Becky Baugh says:

Susan…an emailed Willard from you was the BEST thing to happen to me today. My husband passed away this spring and today he would have been 70 years old. Don’t fret, we had over 45 wonderful years of marriage and those memories sustain me. And it’s the kind, gentle life, like that you offer with your heart in your books, that means so much as shadows grow long. I have all your books…you even signed them for me long ago at a QVC outting.
So let’s play this day super happy! Cake, candles and kittens? Works for me.
Thank you for everything, Susan. Mostly for just being Susan.
