ALMOST TURKEY TIME

Almost Turkey time!  MUSICA ~ you have to watch the little dance that goes with this one! So sweet! Then play it again and come read . . . xoxo

Hello Everyone

Free range turkeyTurkey dinner anyone? Yummy! Our “free range” turkeys are very calm, considering the date and all, milling around our backyard.  All white turkeysThat’s because they know they’re safe, culinarily unattractive with nothing to worry about. Not like these crazy babies that came running to see us a couple of years back when we pulled over to take pictures of them.

Maybe you remember them? So cute! Our wild Island turkeys are not grain fed like these cuties (except of course at our house, where they get bird food), they are mosquito and fly fed, and look pretty much inedible to me. Whenever I see these guys up there  I always think maybe we will have salmon for Thanksgiving! You can’t imagine how sweet they were, and curious about us.

willard

I just finished writing a brand new Willard (this photo is from the last one) . . . I have so many fun surprises for you! A  preview of how the new book is coming along and MUCH more! It should start going out next Tuesday, so watch your mail box ~ it usually takes about four days for them all to go. Hope you love it!

drying sheets on the line

We have been sleeping so well. And this is why ~ the sheets! They are so cozy and crisp because we’ve gotten into the habit of drying them on the line.’Course that home-sweet-homewill stop when it starts freezing out there, but it’s been HEAVEN, a noticeable difference, they way they feel and smell, even inspires conversation between Joe and I when we’re on our walk, saying how delicious they are. If you can do it, if it’s not already snowing on you, and there are no rules against clothes drying on your line, try it!

nature

And while I was out there I had to take a picture of the ground. So pretty under the maple tree ~ SO gorgeous despite dastardly worm-bites from killer worms we’ve managed to attract here on the Island. But we are going to get rough with them this year and put some oil on our tree trunks where they lay their eggs to keep them from ever hatching. Still pretty, if a bit gnawed.

cozy fire

I had to get the sheets in before it started raining . . . rainy daywhich it did, all day yesterday. It was perfect Willard-writing weather, tires slapping the street outside my window, raindrops pattering on the glass, while I thought about what would be the perfect new Giveaway to celebrate this Willard (a surprise!) ~ it was a delightful rainstorm which inspired us to light the first fire of the season last night.

Thanksgiving table

We’re having people to dinner tonight (which is why this is going to be a short post ~ I have to go cook!) I’ve been looking at some of my dinner-party table settings . . . and starting to think about Thanksgiving, which always makes me think about my grandma.

My grandma taught me how to set the table when I was little.

Looking at the Chinese version of one of my favorite books is amazing. I would like it even though I can’t read the words in Chinese. Your posts are always uplifting and inspiring. You remind me of things I may not have taken the time to see. Thank you for the blog, the books and the inspiration.

  2. Julie says:

Love your books, my daughter who shares my home, gets mine and I am in the process of collecting and giving my daughter-in-law as many as I can find! Come to Lincoln, Omaha or Grand Island on your book tour! We’d love to have you and Joe!!

  3. Lisa Champion says:

    Dear Susan,
I have loved your art and recipe books forever! I grew up in Maine, so I know the magic of Autumn in New England and I miss being there, especially this time of year! I live in Kentucky now, but my heart is forever in Maine. The reason I love your art so much is because it reminds me of simpler times and the love of family and friends. I have your Autumn recipe book which I will treasure until the day I die. Please don’t ever stop bringing joy and beauty into this world! You are a ray of sunshine! Thank you so much!

  4. Carol Gibbs says:

I just put down my copy of The Fairy Tale Girl to check my email and there was Willard. You need to know that after reading a few pages of the new book, I had to order copies for my sisters and daughters. I promise not to make that mistake again. From now on I will order enough for everybody the first order. Thank you, Susan, for your wonderful art and stories.

Thanks again, after a busy day I delight in walking down the lane with Joe and you, or almost being able to smell the baking happening in your kitchen, seeing what is happening early in the morning as the sun comes up, lovely little moments to calm the soul, blessing those minutes spent with you.

  9. Kitty says:

This is my first Willard email and I have loved reading it. I have been in love with your books and everything else you glory in since I first saw a cookbook in 1988. One of my very best friends and I have been exchanging Susan Branch every Christmas since I moved back to the mountains in 1993 and I showed her my Susan Branch cookbooks. She has given me one of your calendars every year since and I surprise her with something I’ve found that you made with love. She has journals, personal cookbooks, stationery, lots of goodies. I already have a special treat ready for our gift exchange this year and look forward to your new calendar on the kitchen wall. Thanks for enriching our world with your art, wit and wisdoms. Hope to see you in North Carolina someday soon!

  10. Susan Chicas says:

We have a new Chinese neighbor I would love to gift with A Fine Romance in Chinese! She is multi-lingual and I’m sure would be able to read it. Blessings to you at Thanksgiving, and thank you for sending us such cheery posts…and the possibility of surprises, to boot!
California finally had a tiny bit of rain, and now a little chill to the air to match the turning yellow and brown (and not just from the drought!) leaves. Yay!
    Happy Thanksgiving.

The walk you and Joe take everyday looks Beautiful!! My husband, myself and our dog Gus take a 5:00 a.m. walk 365 days of the year. A lot of the year we have our flashlights. See deer(sometime resting) hear owls depending what time of year and coyotes that sound like they’re going to charge us but we never see them. Also beautiful stars and the moon. We have wonderful walks!!

  21. Dottie in Pa says:

Susan, just read the latest Nov. Willard and loved it as usual. I’ve read your blog for many years now and so look forward to it. Check for it everyday and very sad when it’s late, but I do understand. I Love to see wash hanging on the line and used to hang mine until I started to get dizzy when I was looking up. My Mother always hung her wash out even in cold weather and it would get stiff as a board.
Love the type of writing you do and discovered Gladys Tabor in the 60’s when I read Woman’s Circle magazine. I wrote to the ladys who had books to sell and have almost all of hers. Also bought her newest ones. I like to read Faith Baldwin,Tasha Tudor. Love the artist Mary Engelbriet also. I do so love art and heartful homey writers.
Looking forward to reading your work for many more years. I’m 76.
Best wishes and Good luck in your travels next year. So sorry you will not be stopping in Pa.
    A loving fan!

  24. Pat Harmon says:

I loved Fairy Tale Girl soooo much! I bought A Fine Romance at the same time and am having the hardest time saving it until the new one comes. I just pre-ordered it. I want to read them in order. Keep them coming or I will die of withdrawal! 💗💙💜❤️💛💚😍 Pat

  28. Jackie Whitnack says:

I have all of your books and every year I get every calendar you make….now Im hooked on the blotter size. It is startling to read in your books how much it seems our lives are parallel. Heartbreak, I believe can make you kinder. I like to think that my difficulties and disappointments have made me more empathetic and I see that in you also. Thank you again and again for your clever artwork and your lovely penmanship, also, your revealing yourself to us. All of us who were fortunate enough to have found in you a bosom friend and kindred spirit just like Anne Shirley and Diana Barry from Anne of Green Gables. How exciting that women in China can have a lovely book, maybe you will be asked to be an ambassador.

  29. Alisa McGrath says:

    Hi Susan,
I had a storage space that was sold before the 30 days was up to pay. The only thing I was upset about was the crate with all my favorite cookbooks in it. All of yours and the ones my mom gave me. I was devistated. My mom is gone and so were her recipes.
Low and behold, 10 years later as we are moving I opened a box marked “books”. And there are all my cookbooks. I cried. A lot. I was so happy to have my moms hand written recipes and books. And your books. I love your books. And I’ve made so many of your recipes.
So now I have all but the 2 new ones. I would love to win them.
Happy Thanksgiving and a very Merry Christmas!!
    God Bless,
    Alisa McGrath

I have all of your books except the 2 new ones. I would love to win them.

  30. Barbara A. Stewart says:

    Hi Susan,
Once again reading your blog has just brightened my day! I love all those same things you do and it’s such a pleasure to be able to share it all together. What a thrill to have your book about your England trip translated into Chinese! What could be next? I discovered you years ago with your cookbook “Heart of the Home” and I’ve loved seeing everything else you’ve done ever since. Thank you for all the pleasure you’ve given me over the years!
    All the best,
    Marlene

Love the new Willard!!! A little sunshine in my inbox!!! Can’t wait to hear all about your travels in the next year… and I’m hoping the Cincinnati book signing works out.. I just may get to see you there!

  33. Kim Rose says:

I am in the middle of A Fine Romance (a birthday gift to myself) – today is Friday and I now have the weekend ahead to read again… it has been and is just one big HUG! When you were in England, I was in Tuscany fulfilling my life long dream with my fine romance called Steve. We got married the year after in 2013. I know he has been sneaking and reading your book while I am at work (he is retired), I know this because yesterday he said to me that ‘perhaps a couple of days on an ocean liner wouldn’t be too bad’ – this has always been his absolute ‘no no’. My middle daughter has announced a new babe on the way and so we have had to postpone our trip to England to April 2017 this will be my first time (Steve is from there) and your book has inspired me to make special time for footpath walking that we would otherwise not have done. Wishing you a wonderful festive rest of the year and much enjoyment for all your exciting future plans. Kim Rose – Johannesburg South Africa.

  34. Linda says:

My first Willard and a giveaway. How grand! Thank you for all the lovely, comfy words and pictures.

I loved watching the British Bake Off this year and they will be having a special show after Thanksgiving for you and me. Did you know there is a young lady named Merry Christmas on the show Alaskan Bush People. My daughter Michelle told me, on that note I will sign off.

So nice to know a “kindred spirit” that loves all the things I do, teapots, tea cups, flowers, quilts, cooking, reading, old movies, growing up in the 50’s and 60’s, family and on and on! Looking forward to new book in the Spring! Love, Susan

  52. Charly Fowler says:

Being away from wifi and my laptop was sooooooo hard this week cuz I knew there was a blog post and a Willard waiting for me! They did not disappoint. You make life so full of promise. I’m always in such a happy mood after reading what you write! Thanks!

  53. Judy Chihak says:

I just wanted to tell you about MY “secret” language…it is called egg talk and the rules are the same as Ark and Arfy, just insert the word egg after the first letter and between syllables. Since their aren’t as many words that start with an “e” you don’t run into the same words that start with F troubles ;o) My Jr. High friends and I used to talk on the phone like this so our families couldn’t understand all our devious plans. I have loved your books and art since you started publishing, I have them all and set them out as part of my seasonal decorating. Yeggour Freggiend, Jeggudeggy

  54. Marsha Sega says:

  55. Rosemary Olson says:

    Dear Susan,

Thank you for such a nice surprise. It’s always a big treat getting new stuff from you. Thank you and Joey for the salmon recipe. I would like to see more recipes and hope that you would consider a good old fashioned snail mail postcard pen pal section. It would be nice to get and give postcards from around the world.
Southern California is hot this week. It doesn’t seem like Fall weather for Thanksgiving, so, it’s nice seeing the Alcott House.
Please have a mini-Calender or Purse Calendar giveaway?! Be careful out there…my sister fell on a AAA battery and broke her leg. She will be fine, but it’s a reminder to take it a little slower and watch your step.

    Enjoy your Turkey Day!!

  56. Joan says:

Received A FINE ROMANCE as a gift while recovering from surgery. After every page I thought, “I love this book”. I have since given it as gifts to friends so they can share the experience-my copy is too precious and I am afraid someone will “forget’ to return it to me-lol!

I just got a new kitten and named him Dickens and then read the quote in Willard by Charles Dickens, “What greater gift than the love of a cat”.

Thank you for the warm feelings and the smiles as I read Willard….

  57. Wendi DeClercq says:

Thank you for sharing your talents and inspiring joy from all the little things in life!

  58. Anthea Milton says:

    Susan,
I cant believe it, I started crying when I saw the china on the table….it was my grandmothers table, which isnt so strange until you realise that she had it on her table in the 60’s and in Cardiff, S wales, UK!!!!
She died many years ago and I dont know what happened to her china other than a saucer that I begged my mother to let me have as that pattern is one of my favourites and would conjure up my “Nanna” whenever I saw it. Unfortunately many moves over the past years, the final one to Seattle in 2001 made my saucer disappear in a box one day never to be seen again, so again it was wonderful to see the pattern, enjoy the memories and know that in some small way my grandmothers spirit lives on in you’re house!!!! Hope that doesnt spook you out, but if you ever hear a little welsh voice singing that old song,,”If I can help somebody,,,,”….Its her!

  59. Karen Lewis says:

    Dear Susan,
I sew enjoy reading your blog and viewing your beautiful artwork. It inspires me to get quilting. I love you bow tie quilt draped over your charming kitchen chair. Your family pictures flood me with my family holiday memories.
May your Thanksgiving be filled with treasured memories!

  60. Cerene Larson says:

Hi Friend!! Congrats on your Chinese book success. It truly takes more than one would think to get a book translated the with the same spirit and ” feel”! I once tried to translate my chocolate chip, browned butter pretzel cookie recipe in Italian so I could share with a sweet italian lady in the village we visited . What a comedy of errors ;). Anyhow, I’ll be sending you a wave and a smile on thanksgiving .. Hope you have a good one,

    Best,
    Cerene

  61. Becky Nexsen says:

My sister and I were so disappointed that your book signing tour doesn’t include a South Carolina destination. The closest place on the map is Atlanta, Georgia. Perhaps another time, another tour. Wishing you a perfect Thanksgiving!
    Becky

  62. Kathy tomaino says:

I just finished reading your latest book and I must say, I really related to it. I also grew up in that time era. I couldn’t believe how you tapped into that time perIod. You grew up in the west coast and I in the east coast but so remarkable the same. I also went thru a romance and marriage and then a devastating divorce. As you, I recovered and met my true love! I went on to have two daughters. My youngest admires you so and for her birthday, her husband took her to Martha’s Vineyard to meet you when you had started your book tour for “A Fine Romance”. I hope also to meet you some day. Continue doing what you are doing. It gives so much pleasure to everyone who reads and enjoys your books and art work!

    Yay for Williards!!!

Hope I can make it to you book tour. I work 45 minutes from home and barely have time to read your blog, so I still need to contact Aaron’s books, an independent bookstore in Lititz, PA. Lititz was Voted the coolest small town in America and is the home of the famous Wilbur bud which is like a Hershey kiss, but with extra chocolate These are kept mostly secret. There is a wonderful Inn to stay at there as well.

    Have a wonderful Thanksgiving 💕

  68. Nancy D'Alessandro says:

Thanks for your warm and cheery writing. I have two secret languages, one from childhood and one from college. One is ‘idigi’ and the other ‘ala’. I had so much fun with those. Your site really cheered me up. I’ve been fighing a big bug, and your MUSICA and words soothe the soul. Thank you, Susan! xo

  70. Diedra Lanphear says:

Hello dear Susan! As usual, you have brought me much needed Joy at a time when I really could use some! Too long of a story so I will have to send you an email. I have longed to have that Joy mug for a long time, as I collect mugs from all over, and no matter what I go through, I always have Joy! I believe in magic (and serendipity) so I’m believing I will be the lucky (and joyful) winner. Love and joy from the cancer surviving flight attendant who met you at Rainy Day books and you posted our pic on your website after — and who went on the QE2 this spring with my husband just like you and Joe! I will send you pics of me posing all over the ship with your book in my email. 🙂

  71. Diedra Lanphear says:

    Oops! QM2! 🙂

  72. Nancy says:

Susan, I love how you honor your Grandfather, by sending us Willards. Your family story is priceless. Also, I like your Thanksgiving table setting and immediately noticed the pattern on your plates. We have only three small plates, but of the same pattern, which we treasure.

There is a Barnes and Noble in Appleton, WI – I would love it (and I am sure a lot of others would too) if that was a stop on your upcoming book tour! Thank you for all the color, inspiration and joy you bring! God Bless You Susan…

Thank you for the incredible investment you’ve made in the lives of so many, many women (men & families, too).
I so appreciated reading the latest Willard and then seeing all the new things here, it’s all so sweet and encouraging to me. I just wanted to say thank you… from the heart of this home. 🙂 And thank you for the many, many years you’ve been part of my kitchen… through recipes and ideas in so many of your books on my shelves. Thank you and God bless you. ♥

Dear Susan! As always, your giveaway is awesome and I would looooooooove to win these books, especially the out-of-print Christmas from the Heart of the Home. Congrats on the Chinese edition of Fine Romance! But, please promise me one thing: if you ever consider publishing one of your books in Hungarian, you’ll ask me to translate it (Hungarian is not only my mother tongue, but I’m also a translator). 🙂

I learned a simple trick when you are setting the table as to which side the silverware goes on. The knife and spoon go on the right b/c the knife and spoon have 5 letters as does the word “right”. Fork has 4 letters as does the word “left”. Helped me a lot back in the day. Love your blog, it’s my favorite. Happy Thanksgiving to you and Joe and your furbabies.
