The Moon, Redux

Because I just did a long post about the moon for New Year’s Eve, today’s post was supposed to be all about tea time and dishes and cups and teapots, to go with my Willard newsletter that starts going out today.   But, Sunday night, we walked into town to have dinner and even though it wasn’t the “official” full moon yet, the island was SO beautiful, the harbor was SO alive — I couldn’t help but show you!  We went home and checked the exact time the first full moon of 2012 would rise.  And last night, we were ready. We were moonchasers!  Reminded once again, it’s true, the best things in life are free!

Sunday night is what got us started; here we are, just three blocks from home, on the town dock at Owen Park. The thing about living on Martha’s Vineyard, is that you don’t just get the moon, you get island ambience! Shore lapping, rippling water, flags flying, people going in and out of the golden light at the Steamship Building, the salty smell of the sea.  A feast of beauty for the senses.

This bit of horn-blowing ambience is docked in front of the building in the first photo — when we got there, the ferry was loading up, getting ready for the forty-five minute trip across the sound to the mainland. The water rippled perfectly to catch the dazzling reflection from the boat windows . . . I can’t even believe we were standing right there, catching such a beautiful sight!

Water like glass for the sailboat masts too . . . this is supposed to be winter, but so far, it’s been hovering near the 50’s on most days; clear and cold at night.

And behind us, the lights were beginning to come on in the little houses that hug the shore.  But you are saying to yourself, where’s the moon?  Didn’t she say something about the moon?

Oh yes she did!  There it is!  And there goes the ferry.  When we left the house, we really weren’t expecting this, we were just going to dinner. . . but when we saw what was happening . . .

We needed to chase the moon, the ferry, the stars!  We got the car and drove out West Chop to the Meadow for a clear view of the sound in time to see the ferry steaming toward Woods Hole.  I think that’s one of the dippers up there in the sky on the right!

A little further down, we came to the West Chop Lighthouse and there was the moon, giving us a beautiful shot. All of these photos were taken without flash — for some reason, there is a very strong light shining on the front of this house.  This photo reminded us of an Edward Hopper painting.  But we wouldn’t want to live here . . . who could sleep?  See the stars?

Thought you might like to see a daytime photo of the lighthouse (built in 1817) . . .  just as wonderful!

Finally back home, and there’s the moon, peeking through the linden trees over the roof of our house.  And this wasn’t even the full moon!  I think you can see why, first thing Monday morning, we Googled “time of moon rise on Martha’s Vineyard,”  and planned our day around 5:10 pm last night.  When the time finally came, we got our hats, gloves, scarves, big jackets and drove to East Chop.  We got there early and waited, so excited, as it got darker and darker, scanning the water line, asking each other 10,000 times, “Where do you think it will come up?” And, “Do you see a little light over there?”  Trying to pinpoint the spot it would rise.  And then, finally, “There it is!!!”

Why is this so exciting?  I don’t know.  But most of what you’re seeing is reflection on the water; it’s really just a little sliver of a moon, so far, skimming the water line.

And then we were treated to a bit of a light show. . . sparking pink on the water . . .

Then turning yellow.  Hello.

Lighting the ocean on fire for one perfect moment in time; how could it get any better than this?

Here comes a fishing boat going home to Menemsha, about to cross the path of the moon; how must it feel to be on that boat?!!!  The put-put sound of the engine, the clanging of the rigging, the smell of the sea in the cold wind, the water rushing past the bow, and then, the moon.  Lucky!

I hope they did!

So, after taking about 200 photos of this view :-), we got back in the car and drove along the north shore taking more pictures as we went . . .

What a view — I wonder if the owners of this house are inside but turned off the lights to watch this???  I would.  And I’d be playing this music too!  Bella Luna!

This is the Edgartown Lighthouse . . . see the red light?  It blinks!  I got it!! 🙂  So wonderful that we are digital now . . . otherwise I would have gone totally broke on the film for this little outing!

And yet, I will publish an out of focus picture like this!  But how could I not?  We were “coming to” from being moon drunk, and began to notice how beautiful the Edgartown architecture looked in the moonlight, details gleaming white in the dark.

Edgartown is a very pretty little New England town.  But it’s a summer town; almost all the businesses close down in the winter, and many of the homes are occupied only during the summer.  If you are ever looking for peace and quiet, Edgartown in the winter is the place to go.  This is part of the Charlotte Inn, one of the prettiest Inns on the island.

The beautiful Federated Church . . . built in 1828; the congregation was established in 1642.  But I digress.  How can I help it.  Sublime beauty calls.

It was a wonderful drive back to our neighborhood . . . the moon shined its light on us the whole way.

Full moons wake me up…. I think I have thin eyelids or something, because I’ve always been able to sense or “see” light even with my eyes closed!  Here’s the moon around 2 am this morning.

If you have my calendar, you already know that Native Americans called the first moon of the year the “Wolf” moon.  They had nature-inspired names for all the moons; next month it will be the “Snow” moon.  I recently gave away a Bookmark that includes the dates of the full moons for 2012 and all the Native American names for them . . . in case you just came here from Willard and missed it, here it is again.  Click on “bookmark” and you can print it out and become a moon chaser yourself.  It was really fun; next time I’m packing a picnic!  I think a soft little roast beef and lettuce sandwich, heavy on the mayo, lots of salt and pepper, would be very nice in the warm car with the moon shine.  (Notice moon shine is two words! :-))

OK girls, you probably know by now, we have a special give-away today, Valentine’s Day is coming . . . I mentioned in the Willard that I was giving away a signed copy of one of my Love Books, but I’m really giving away two!  To the same person!  One for whoever wins the random drawing, and one for the winner to give away to someone they love!  I hope one of those two books goes to YOU!!!   All you have to do is leave a comment (just click on the little gray word “comment” at the bottom of this post), and that will enter you in the drawing.  I’ll let you know who the winner is in a couple of days.  Until then, have a wonderful day girlfriends, be good to yourself!

Well this is a bit strange because last night when I left exercise class I couldn’t help but notice how gorgeous the moon was and I thought of you! And at that time you were busy chasing the moon! The picture from the dock took my breath away. So gorgeous. How is Jack?

    • sbranch says:

He’s good, but in no way is he going to nap right now. He’s seems just like his regular self — and I’m supposed to “keep him quiet” — Ha!

  2. Tamra Carraway says:

Oh no – your girlfriends are crashing your site with all our buzzing and I’m not sure that my first comment got through…he’s MORE crossed fingers and sweet anticipation…thank you for this fun wishery!

  3. Diana Lucas says:

Hi Susan, what beautiful photos-thanks for sharing them on your blog. I live in a landlocked part of the Texas prairie so never get to see Martha’s Vineyard except in books. It is truly breathtaking through all your photos. I have all your older cookbooks and I would love to have this one too. Thanks, Diana

  4. Amy Grossi Dzula says:

Ha ha Gala, I did too, a few weeks ago when I wrote a few comments. Then I remembered I am pretty much a lone wolf..:) It’s all good though.

i have always wanted to visit martha’s vineyard & your beautiful moon photos made me think of another kind of illumination there…the illumination festival with the lanterns on the porches. i can only imagine that you have painted many of the wonderful lanterns with their shapes and patterns and glowing colors! thank you for sharing life’s wonderful, simpler pleasures and allowing me to travel with you, from sea to shining sea! xo

It is a little bit crashed! I have over 200 comments waiting for “approval!” I hit “approve” and then a half hour goes by, while I wait for it to go through! Yikes! Oh well, hope everyone understands how these things work!

  7. Ritchie Saunders says:

Hope we can view the “Full Moon” sometime on Martha’s Vineyard.
Many times we drive to a spot in the Santa Monica Mountains and hike way up where we can see the moon rise over Los Angeles. We carry some champagne and toast her. Then by the time we hike down and drive to our house which is in a canyon she peaks over the hill and through the trees above our house. We are so lucky!!! It has been very very clear for the past few days so 2 days ago we had a Harvest Moon which was spectacular along with views of Catalina! Your pictorial is just fabulous! Cheers! Ritchie

    • sbranch says:

I’ve seen that moon rising over LA — it’s very pretty with all the lights! Glad you liked our moon in the dark!

  8. Christine Polkovitch says:

As I read your blog entry today, Susan, I kept thinking about the scene from Moonstruck where the older men were gathered in the park talking about the “luna bella” the night before. What a great movie – one of my favorites! And what a great blog entry! Thank you Susan – Happy New Year!!

P.S. – I hope all went well with Jack!!

  9. Cheryl says:

Thank you for this give a way. I like the idea of 2 copies of your book going to the winner, it would give me great pleasure to pass one on to someone, kind of like the feeling you get when you “pay it forward”. I love the read about your life, when my days are the most hectic, it calms me to read your blog.

  10. Lisa G says:

    ~Tina

  19. Lynne says:

I’d never thought about checking on a particular day for the moonrise time… today is a bittersweet day, as it is my brother’s birthday (who passed away almost 8 years ago). He would have been 44 yrs today. Perhaps I’ll got sit and watch the moon rise towards him in heaven this evening. Thank you for the lovely idea!

  20. EsSuzy says:

Susan, the moon photos are just breathtaking. Don’t you love how the tree branches sometime look like black lace against the sky? I have always been a sky watcher. Many times the moon on the rise surprises me as I drive home from visiting son, daughter-in-law, and sweetie-pie granddaughter. Love all the churches & buildings, houses too, thank you, as always, for sharing. SusanL xo
PS to Cara, it’s not a long time either. He’ll be out of the house in just a snap,so make every minute count! 🙂

  21. Pat says:

I enjoy your blog and am so happy to have found it. Every thing you write and show is a delight. Thank you. Pat

  22. Lynn says:

I spent 35 summers on East Chop and was so lucky to see many sunrises and moonrises. We were extra lucky because we could also watch the sunset over West Chop. I start all my seasons with your books! After Christmas, I open the calendars (I have three, actually 4 if you count the new desk blotter I bought, which is mildly funny because I never know what day it is so I must be enjoying them as art). When I have had my fill of the pages devoted to the month of January, I move on to my LOVE book. From there I will move toward Heart of the Home and then SUMMER and so on. I can always sneak in VINEYARD SEASONS and GIRLFRIENDS any time of the year. I love finding something new in each book, even though I have been reading them for years, a little drawing or a quote that I missed. For however many minutes I can steal away, it takes me to another place, and I love it. Thanks Susan (by the way I have five daughters and I have a Susan)!

  23. Gail says:

Susan, All I can say is how beautiful!!! Thank you again and again. Hope little Jack is doing ok!

  24. Dale Worness says:

You are so lucky to live near all those lighthouses. They have always fascinated me, along with castles and covered bridges. I also loved your photos of the Federated Church and Charlotte Inn. I’ve always admired historical buildings. If I lived in that area I would do nothing roam around and take pictures all day!
Your Love Book cover is so pretty. You are definitely my favorite artist. I have at least one of your books, prints or calendars in every room of my house. Who needs Picasso or Rembrandt when you can have a Branch? 🙂

  25. Kimi says:

    Hello Susan

Well I just want to say that I enjoy your work weather its about your home, art, Good food, Girl kitty, and Jack, and Joe too and your lovely town. I love coming back to your blog and getting the emails too and reading all that it entails… Your my comfort and I don’t mind telling you that ether! Ps Hows Jack doing? I know he was to go in today and have somethings removed! from the boy situation! cute little man xo

  26. Linda Steinhauer says:

I loved your post on the moon. Lastnight going to our daughters basketball game, my husband said the “moon” mezmerized him. He couldn’t stop looking at it. I was driving and glanced over at it and good thing he was watching the road because I almost ended up in the ditch! By the way, my daughters basketball team won the Ripley County Tourney and beat the Batesville Bulldogs. Seeing the moon and winning the tourney – it was a very special night!

  27. Sherry says:

Absolutely beautiful moon shots! My husband is an avid astronomer and he loves to look at the moon when it is full. He has to use a special filter because it is always so bright, but he has taken some lovely photos through the lens of his telescope. The lovely old white church with the tall steeple speaks peace to my heart. Thanks for the journey.

  28. Diane Stowe says:

Enjoy getting your blog posts, you are always so upbeat. you are so kind to have the Giveaway, who wouldn’t love a signed book from you. liked the moon pics.

  29. Jacquelyn Wirthlin says:

Love the moon pictures. We went out to walk the dog last night and the moon was so gorgeous … lit up the desert all the way to Las Vegas. Thanks Sue, hope Jack is doing well.

  30. Susan says:

    Thanks for the wonderful pix.

I’ve been watching the moon for the past few nights. It’s gorgeous. I can see it rise from my office window, and then get to see it when I get home (late). I tried to catch the meteor shower last week, but I missed it. I was outside at what I thought was the right time (2:30 AM) according to the radio, but I just didn’t see anything anywhere in the sky. I was very disappointed.

  31. Tricia Staley says:

    Hi Susan,

Thanks for brightening my day with the post and photos of the moon, which is itself doing a fine job of brightening my nights this week!

Yes my life is as rich as the Golden Full Moon for having your blog a part of my life each day. John who is my better half is from England, also enjoys me reading to him your words, poems, also enjoying the meals from receipes, and the adventures that are always magical and fun journeys. Tea time and old movie time, or tea time and good book time, which by the way reminds me, I would so cherish your book that is being given away this time, I believe I would get so excited I would have to have more than tea time to settle me down. I cherish your blog, Willard, and all you have done to enrich my life with the beauty you have put into it. c

  36. Melinda in CO says:

The moon here in the mountains was captivating too. I loved your pictures of the moon over the water. Thanks for the giveaway.

  37. Cyndi Harp says:

You had two of my favorite things in the blog today. The moon and lighthouses. *L* It’s been tough since we had to put our dog to sleep on Friday and finding your emails has helped to brighten my day a bit. Thanks Susan.

  38. Patty says:

Want to make sure I am in the pot for the beautiful books so I am reposting in case I was dropped:

Oh how I love the moon pictures!! I am a moon lover too! Not to long ago the full moon was shining through my bedroom window. I just abolutely love that!!!! The neighbors must think me a nut if they see me, but sometimes I have been known to go outside just to be in the “moon shade.” We just have to look around us to see all of the wonderful blessings we have. Thank you for all of your wonderful pictures and for taking us sight-seeing around Martha’s Vineyard!!

  39. Donna says:

Thanks for sharing your beautiful East coast moon! I appreciate your talent and what is displayed through your art…Heart of the Home calendars have hung in my kitchen since 2000. I didn’t realize Love from the Heart of the Home was out of print until I saw it on eBay>< Should my name be pulled from the hat, my girlfriend since high school, who lost her son two years ago this month, will be getting that 2nd book. I once visited your store in Arroyo Grande. It was darling and I miss it! Happy New Year!!!

  40. Pat says:

I also took some pictures last night but yours are definitely better than mine. You made me feel like I was there with you. Thanks also for giving me an idea for Valentines day.

  41. tricia says:

I’m just “over the moon” about the moon – how nice to find a kindred spirit! Thanks for all the great pictures – I was stuck at home and not able to chase the moon – we go to the highest point in Arlington and watch the moon rise over Boston. How nice to see the moon rise in someone else’s back yard!

  42. sylvia faye says:

I love full moons as well. After a full moon, when on the wane, I have noticed that is when we have the worst weather. Took note that ‘moon shine’ was two words and not the moonshine to drink…by the way our landlord’s cat is named moonshine…one word!

Your pictures are outstanding and I enjoyed my ride with you following the moon around your Island.

You have a ‘heart’ for all things that speak to the ‘heart’ and what a lovely giveaway. I would like to point out that it is St. Valentine’s day…he was a real person and is a Saint in the Church…so maybe you can tell this to your blog friends. I thanked the chefs at Costco for putting St. Valentine on their cakes for this special day of the year…dedicated to the Saint who was full of love for his fellowman. He deserves a big ‘thank you’, n’est-ce pas?

Loved to win your St. Valentine giveaway book…it would be so special coming from you. I only have one of your older Christmas books which I treasure.

    Joyfully,
    ~Sylvia Faye

  43. Cori says:

Beautiful! Wish I could be there to enjoy the salty air and the sound of the sea…aahh!

  44. Connie Lowry says:

I made your bookmark for myself and my four school-age grandchildren. Four of my grandchildren live about 10 minutes from my house, but the other three are far away. The moon is something we all can share even when there are hundreds of miles between us. They are facinated with the Native American names. We were wondering if they change from year to year? Thank you for finding so many ways to keep so many people connected. It is a good feeling.

    • sbranch says:

They don’t change, but some of them have more than one name. I just chose the ones I like the best.

  45. barb a says:

LOL I’ve never been there- only got to Cape Cod when we lived in MA for a year, but it sure is on my Bucket List!! New England is one of the most beautiful places on earth. Thanks for the chance to win your books. I know exactly who would receive one as a gift. My sis would love it.

  58. Kristina says:

    LOVE the LOVE Book! 🙂

  59. Sarah says:

Oh, those moon rise pictures took my breath away. We live surrounded by mountains, so we don’t get to see that, but our sunrises look much like your pictures. The sun literally “pops” up over the mountain ridge early in the morning. One morning last week we had a fluffy snowfall, and when the sun popped up, everything turned pink and I felt like I was walking the dogs in fluffy cotton candy! 🙂 Have you ever heard that song “Winter Moon” by Hoagy Carmichael? The lyrics are lonely, but beautiful. I always hear the words in my head this time of year when I look up and see the moon on a cold night.

I like your roast beef and “moonshine” idea. 🙂

    Sarah

  60. Carolyn says:

Greetings Susan, It was so fun to get my bookmark out and inform everyone that it was indeed a Wolf Full Moon last night. It, also, happened to be our son’s birthday. My mother-in-law will turn 90 years old on April 6, which is the Pink Full Moon. That seems appropriate!

  61. Deborah Winter says:

    Hi Susan!

Because of you I am more aware of the moon–looking forward to the pink one in April especially!!! So happy you too appreciate Valentine’s Day; it is my very favorite holiday of the year right up there and next to Thanksgiving.

Also, I saw “The Bishop’s Wife” for the very first time this Christmas and LOVED it!!! Thank you for the suggestion because I probably wouldn’t have checked it out otherwise.

Have a good evening and hugs to Mr. Jack during his recuperation.

  62. gayle neaves lyles says:

thanks so much…i love art, watercolors, oils, pastels, beautiful photography, hiking in the woods, mountains (especially the Blue Ridge), truth, beauty, goodness…kindred spirits…hope…the little dots could go on and on…gnl

  63. Chris S. says:

Thank you Susan for all your blogs…yes the moon is fantastic and it does too wake me up at night…it’s just too breath taking not to gaze at it in all hours of the night. Thank you for sharing with all of us Martha’s Vineyards views of the moon.

    Chris

  64. Kathy says:

    Susan,
A suggestion – a book of your photos. Actually, several books – a moon photo book, a flower photo book, a cat photo book, a dinner party photo book, a four seasons photo book, etc. With your lovely words included, of course.
Love the moon pictures – very well done. Thanks!

  65. Nicole says:

Hi Susan – I love reading your blog every morning when I get up. You inspire me to “slow down” and be in the moment. My kids are home sick from school today- we are cuddling up in my bed with some stories for me to read “Little House in the Big Woods” for my daughter, and “The Little Engine that Could” for my son, while your chicken stock is bubbling away on my stove. I’d also be soooo excited for your Love Book. Thank you so much for your blog and all the fun ideas you share! Nicole

  66. Julie Jenkins says:

I’ll even give you back my unsigned Love book if I win so you can do it again. The ultimate in recycling and sharing Love!!!! xo

Since the beautiful moon truly does “belong to everyone,” I’ve been enjoying it this week hundreds of miles away from Martha’s Vineyard, hanging in its full glory over the oak trees in our South St.Louis neighborhood. I’ve been on Martha’s Vineyard only once, for two days 45 years ago, but your pictures bring back its charm and beauty so perfectly. Thank you for this and every lovely post, Susan!

  70. Gail says:

Gorgeous photographs! I took a little walk last night and noticed the lovely full moon peaking through the branches of the trees. But nothing compares to the moonlight reflected on the water. I hope that someday you will put all of your lovely blogs into one big beautiful book:)

  71. Janie O says:

Oh Sweet Sue! Thank You!! This is my Favorite post Ever!!! Filled with Tears of Joy from all of the Beauty. I am a moon chaser too! The weather here in East TN has been overcast an rainy, and here you have brought me the Joy of watching the Wolf Rise. Sending a Girlfriend HUG across the miles!!

I get tickled when I see “Susan Branch Blog” in my email. Reading an entry is like a taking a mini-vacation while sitting here at my red ‘puter desk. Thank you so much for sharing your days, recipes, pictures, and even your kitties with all of us. I hope this enters me in the drawing for your book. All things Susan Branch are a delight!

  73. Vickie says:

Thank you for sharing your wonderful moon pictures. It is a rare winter night that we get to see it in Western Washington. Those darn overcast skies. There was a computer game called Where in the World is Carmen SanDiego? when my boys were young I could never win because one of the clues was, “eyes the color of the sky,” and I would always pick gray! LOL
One of your FOSB mentioned a Radiograph. Is that what you use to write your wonderfully inspiring artwork and books? I’ve always wondered what you used. Somehow Sharpies and crayons didn’t seem to fit the bill. :-))

    • sbranch says:

Ha ha, gray! Yes, if you look under About Me at the top of the blog, there’s a drop down and I think it’s in My Art Studio or Watercolors, you’ll find all the art supplies I like to use.

I love the pictures with the lighthouse and the one with the troller. Edgartown has so much history. This weekend we looked at a house built in 1746, the oldest two story brick house in NC. It has characteristics of homes built north of Maryland. It is of Flemish brick, which has some bricks that have a blue glow in the sunlight. I don’t know if we should go for it, as we would have to dedicate the rest of our lives to the property, no traveling. I wonder what it looks like in the moonlight.

    Have a great evening!
    Margot

    • Sarah says:

Oh, do it! Old houses are the BEST! Imagine what those walls have seen. We found all kinds of things hidden in places as we tore up our old house last summer, and continue to do so. But you’re right…you’ll never leave the house again. At least not for a while. 🙂

I have your calendar and new last night was the Wolf Moon. Got a text from my young adult daughter just learning to appreciate the subtleties in life – she said “Have you seen the moon yet”. It was 6PM and bright orange just rising in the sky, just like the one in your picture. Funny how it can be the same three hours later, 6,000 miles away. I texted her back – “I have now – and it’s the Wolf Moon. Thanks for reminding me to look.” I was so proud of myself. And thank you always – Susan – it’s the simple things in life that bring true joy! (Though what you manage to do in a week — doesn’t seem so simple to me.) Thanks for all the joy!

  76. Lynn Bontrager says:

I eagerly check every day to see if you have done a blog posting–can’t wait for them. They put a bright spot in my day! I would LOVE to have your book on LOVE.

  77. Missy Moore says:

Thanks for sharing those breathtaking photos of the moon!

  78. Bobbi says:

I also woke up around 2am and was happy to see the Bella Luna smiling at me from my bathroom window.

  79. Victoria Robertson says:

I SEE THE MOON AND THE MOON SEES ME!
GOD BLESS THE MOON AND GOD BLESS THEE!

  80. Pam says:

Susan, your moon photos are great. As kids we loved to go sledding on the moon shine nights.

  81. Bobbi says:

I also woke around 2am to see the Bella Luna smiling at me from my bathroom window. Which is pretty unusual in Portland, OR because it’s usually cloudy and raining.

  82. Stunning wolf moon photos! It was beautiful and bright here in PA too, and warm enough you could almost feel the moonlight shining down.

Thanks for such a generous giveaway! I’ve gifted this book several times over the years, as well as “Girlfriends Forever”, and they’re always a huge hit! The thing I love so much about your books/art/writing is that it’s always so positive and optimistic. Your blog is the same, and never fails to make me smile. Thanks for that. 🙂

  83. Kate says:

Thank you for taking us along on your moon chase. In one of the pictures it looked like the moon was melting into the sea. Just beautiful.

  84. Marilyn says:

Wow…gorgeous pictures of MV in the moonlight! I think the fact that you and Joe are able to walk so many places gives you front row seats to so many magic moments. You two really do stop and smell the roses, which is something I aspire to do more of in 2012!!

Thank you for stopping to snap pictures and for sharing these moments with us!

I completely agree…….the best things in life are free! 🙂

Dear friend, I too am a Moonwatcher. I love looking out to see the big full moon casting shadows through the midnight woods. To think we all sleep under that same moon, with those same “dippers” pouring starlight down upon us. Comforting thought.
    Thank you for sharing!

  86. Toby says:

I made the moon bookmarks for myself and my daughters. My favorite thing is to be woken up in the night by the light of the moon. This time, because of your bookmark, I was ready and waiting for the Wolf Moon and it did not disappoint! I grew up in Boston, on the North Shore, and moved to Southern California in my late twenties and have been in Huntington Beach, Calif, now for more than 20 years. I discovered my first Susan Branch book (your Christmas book) in a small shop in Carmel, CA, when I first moved out here and now own almost every one of your books. My dream is to live six months on Cape Cod and then six months wherever my husband wants. I am living vicariously through you!!! Thank you for living in the moment and sharing it with all us girlfriends :).

  87. Gert says:

Oh my gosh Susan…I don’t think you can post a better blog…AND then…you put up one like this!! Your moon photo’s are just postcard perfect! I know it took a lot of ‘shots’ to get these but they were worth it! smile…

Oh how exciting to possibly win one (no two) of your signed books! I’m speechless, there are no words to tell you how excited I am!! And I know just what loved one I would give the second copy to….

    Blessings my dear friend,
    Gert

  88. Karen Skutt says:

I, too, have had a longstanding love-affair with the moon! I think it’s because it reminds me that we are part of such a vast universe -and I always liked the idea that we are moving (on this planet) all the time! Thanks for sharing these!

  89. Heather Smith says:

Am I too late? Hope not!!!! 🙂

  90. I love to receive your emails. I have never been to your part of America and love the journeys you take me on. It’s like a perfect afternoon outing with a dear friend and I enjoy it so much. Thank you, I love your work…..ALL OF IT!!! Recipes, Painting, Printing, Art, Even leaving the S out of Reasons, yes, it is part of the charm.

      Where are you from Janet?

      • Out West. I currently live in American Fork,, Utah. I was born in Colorado, raised in New Mexico and have lived in Arizona, Texas, California, Nevada and Oklahoma. I have also enjoyed living in some beautiful states in the south ie: Louisiana, and Georgia. I have lived in Utah now the longest, but have met the finest people on earth in my travels.

    Hi Susan
Oh my your pictures are always amazing. The moon is pretty fabulous isn’t it.
I think the girl who wrote the first comment is right, you should write a book on your photos they would be so much fun to look at.
I always know its a full moon because I can’t sleep that night. For some odd reason on a full moon I am wide awake. Oh well its okay then I can watch it and take pictures like you do 🙂
    hope I win that book.
    Happy day Susan

Love your blog and all your interesting, fun and sentimental postings! Sweet, simple things in life are so wonderful!

  93. Pam Bengier says:

Always enjoy your blog, but this one sang a song! I was there with you – chasing the moon, feeling the cool air, hearing the water. For a few brief moments I was literally transported from my desk in Florida to Martha’s Vineyard. Thank you for a wonderful evening. I’ll think about it more when lying in bed tonight.

  94. Dorothy says:

I also watched the moon many times last evening here in Jamestown, NY. I was “on call” for my work and do not sleep well, but it was beautiful and gave comfort. I survived the night. And as an operating room nurse and an animal lover, I do hope that Jack’s surgery went well.
I plan to give the 2nd copy of the book to my little sister, as she gave me my first Susan Branch book, many years ago. Boursin stuffed mushrooms remain a family favorite.
I am glad that I found your blog.

  95. DebbyMc says:

In the exact diagonal corner of the country from you, in San Diego, my son and I were enjoying last night’s full moon, also! He was leaving our house to drive home and I walked him out to his car. It was gloriously bright outside and when we looked up at the moon there was the most perfect and most gigantic ring around it! It was right around midnight, and it was so hushed outside…perfectly magical! I was so excited and so happy to have shared it with my sweet (30 yr old) child. Isn’t it fantastic that people share such a love of the moon across the world and the eons… Great post!

  96. Beth Keser says:

First of all, how is Jack doing today? Did everything go ok? Hope he is resting comfortably (it is the nurse in me!) Thank you for the beautiful moon pictures. You could write about dirt and I would love it 🙂

  97. Stephanie from Nevada says:

    Hi Susan.
Love your creativity. While driving in the early morning hours this past Sunday morning through the Nevada desert, the biggest moon I have ever seen lit up the highway. It was as if God had turned on his flashlight to light the way (even though there were headlights). I thought of you and your blog from last week about the moon. It was absolutely wonderful.
Reading your blog gives me a “time out” each day and allows me to drift into another time and place.
    Stephanie

  98. Robin in New Jersey says:

So much fun! Thank you fro taking the time to write this post. I will NEVER look at a full moon the same way again. What a gift! I can’t wait until the next full moon. I intend to enjoy it to the MAX!

  99. judyCinNC says:

I am so giddy with excitement – wonderful giveaway and so generous of you to include a gift to pay it forward. Love the concept. Chasing the moon, a picnic dinner with you and your sweetie – a beautiful combination. So romantic. We have clouds, rain and no moon – what a disappointment – but Susan saved the day. Thanks. Judy C

  100. Marsha McGinnis says:

Susan these are beautiful. I love the idea of you “chasing the moon”. Edgartown is so charming. Thank you so much for sharing ~
