The Moon, Redux

Because I just did a long post about the moon for New Year’s Eve, today’s post was supposed to be all about tea time and dishes and cups and teapots, to go with my Willard newsletter that starts going out today.   But, Sunday night, we walked into town to have dinner and even though it wasn’t the “official” full moon yet, the island was SO beautiful, the harbor was SO alive — I couldn’t help but show you!  We went home and checked the exact time the first full moon of 2012 would rise.  And last night, we were ready. We were moonchasers!  Reminded once again, it’s true, the best things in life are free!

Sunday night is what got us started; here we are, just three blocks from home, on the town dock at Owen Park. The thing about living on Martha’s Vineyard, is that you don’t just get the moon, you get island ambience! Shore lapping, rippling water, flags flying, people going in and out of the golden light at the Steamship Building, the salty smell of the sea.  A feast of beauty for the senses.

This bit of horn-blowing ambience is docked in front of the building in the first photo — when we got there, the ferry was loading up, getting ready for the forty-five minute trip across the sound to the mainland. The water rippled perfectly to catch the dazzling reflection from the boat windows . . . I can’t even believe we were standing right there, catching such a beautiful sight!

Water like glass for the sailboat masts too . . . this is supposed to be winter, but so far, it’s been hovering near the 50’s on most days; clear and cold at night.

And behind us, the lights were beginning to come on in the little houses that hug the shore.  But you are saying to yourself, where’s the moon?  Didn’t she say something about the moon?

Oh yes she did!  There it is!  And there goes the ferry.  When we left the house, we really weren’t expecting this, we were just going to dinner. . . but when we saw what was happening . . .

We needed to chase the moon, the ferry, the stars!  We got the car and drove out West Chop to the Meadow for a clear view of the sound in time to see the ferry steaming toward Woods Hole.  I think that’s one of the dippers up there in the sky on the right!

A little further down, we came to the West Chop Lighthouse and there was the moon, giving us a beautiful shot. All of these photos were taken without flash — for some reason, there is a very strong light shining on the front of this house.  This photo reminded us of an Edward Hopper painting.  But we wouldn’t want to live here . . . who could sleep?  See the stars?

Thought you might like to see a daytime photo of the lighthouse (built in 1817) . . .  just as wonderful!

Finally back home, and there’s the moon, peeking through the linden trees over the roof of our house.  And this wasn’t even the full moon!  I think you can see why, first thing Monday morning, we Googled “time of moon rise on Martha’s Vineyard,”  and planned our day around 5:10 pm last night.  When the time finally came, we got our hats, gloves, scarves, big jackets and drove to East Chop.  We got there early and waited, so excited, as it got darker and darker, scanning the water line, asking each other 10,000 times, “Where do you think it will come up?” And, “Do you see a little light over there?”  Trying to pinpoint the spot it would rise.  And then, finally, “There it is!!!”

Why is this so exciting?  I don’t know.  But most of what you’re seeing is reflection on the water; it’s really just a little sliver of a moon, so far, skimming the water line.

And then we were treated to a bit of a light show. . . sparking pink on the water . . .

Then turning yellow.  Hello.

Lighting the ocean on fire for one perfect moment in time; how could it get any better than this?

Here comes a fishing boat going home to Menemsha, about to cross the path of the moon; how must it feel to be on that boat?!!!  The put-put sound of the engine, the clanging of the rigging, the smell of the sea in the cold wind, the water rushing past the bow, and then, the moon.  Lucky!

I hope they did!

So, after taking about 200 photos of this view :-), we got back in the car and drove along the north shore taking more pictures as we went . . .

What a view — I wonder if the owners of this house are inside but turned off the lights to watch this???  I would.  And I’d be playing this music too!  Bella Luna!

This is the Edgartown Lighthouse . . . see the red light?  It blinks!  I got it!! 🙂  So wonderful that we are digital now . . . otherwise I would have gone totally broke on the film for this little outing!

And yet, I will publish an out of focus picture like this!  But how could I not?  We were “coming to” from being moon drunk, and began to notice how beautiful the Edgartown architecture looked in the moonlight, details gleaming white in the dark.

Edgartown is a very pretty little New England town.  But it’s a summer town; almost all the businesses close down in the winter, and many of the homes are occupied only during the summer.  If you are ever looking for peace and quiet, Edgartown in the winter is the place to go.  This is part of the Charlotte Inn, one of the prettiest Inns on the island.

The beautiful Federated Church . . . built in 1828; the congregation was established in 1642.  But I digress.  How can I help it.  Sublime beauty calls.

It was a wonderful drive back to our neighborhood . . . the moon shined its light on us the whole way.

Full moons wake me up…. I think I have thin eyelids or something, because I’ve always been able to sense or “see” light even with my eyes closed!  Here’s the moon around 2 am this morning.

If you have my calendar, you already know that Native Americans called the first moon of the year the “Wolf” moon.  They had nature-inspired names for all the moons; next month it will be the “Snow” moon.  I recently gave away a Bookmark that includes the dates of the full moons for 2012 and all the Native American names for them . . . in case you just came here from Willard and missed it, here it is again.  Click on “bookmark” and you can print it out and become a moon chaser yourself.  It was really fun; next time I’m packing a picnic!  I think a soft little roast beef and lettuce sandwich, heavy on the mayo, lots of salt and pepper, would be very nice in the warm car with the moon shine.  (Notice moon shine is two words! :-))

OK girls, you probably know by now, we have a special give-away today, Valentine’s Day is coming . . . I mentioned in the Willard that I was giving away a signed copy of one of my Love Books, but I’m really giving away two!  To the same person!  One for whoever wins the random drawing, and one for the winner to give away to someone they love!  I hope one of those two books goes to YOU!!!   All you have to do is leave a comment (just click on the little gray word “comment” at the bottom of this post), and that will enter you in the drawing.  I’ll let you know who the winner is in a couple of days.  Until then, have a wonderful day girlfriends, be good to yourself!

Greetings from the San Francisco Bay Area. I left the house with my husband at 6:30 this morning and that beautiful moon was just magical! We couldn’t help but to comment and admire. It was the most wonderful way to start the day! YES! The best things in life are free! I love your kindred spirit, Susan Branch, and I love your BLOG!

  2. Joy says:

Oh how I would love to win. My sister’s birthday is in a few weeks and both she and I collect hearts although nothing as dear as your collection of heart rocks.

  3. Joyce says:

Hi Susan, I really love these moon pictures, everyone of them. I am moon happy too. Have you ever counted songs that have moon in the title? We did it on a road trip several years ago. I forget how many we came up with. I guess it is time to do it again and I will write them down this time. Love from another moonlover girlfriend. Bye, Joyce

  4. Cindy Holshouser says:

What a perfet Valentine’s Day gift:)

  5. Becky says:

Last night as I headed back to school for the PTA meeting I saw the most gorgeous moon and wished I could share it with someone. Little did I know you were looking at the same moon. Bella Luna for sure in the Midwest!

  6. Brenda says:

Your photos are so pretty. I enjoyed gazing at the moon with you. I do have my calender up and love how you point out things that we would not see on most calenders. Oh, I know just who I would give the second copy to if I won. Thanks!

  7. Melissa Leathley says:

How is Jack??? Hope he got through his surgery Ok.

  8. ♥Duff says:

another intoxicating (moon shine pun fully intended) post, thanks! I’m looking forward to making chicken stock tomorrow and soup the day after–I’ll let you know how it goes ♥

  9. ArlineLA says:

Loved the note in Willard about the “mistake” on the calendar! Did you know that quilters used to always make an intentional mistake in their quilts because “only
God makes things that are perfect”?. I’m going to go buy an extra calendar — it will be a collector’s item!

  10. Dina Meador says:

I love the moon full or not. When it is near full and full I can see it peaking thru the trees in my back yard while I’m washing dishes – which helps me get thru that chore! I follow it into my den which has traverse windows and you can really see it thru those windows.

Thank you for showing us your full month adventure!

    Dina

  11. Andi M says:

Thanks for the marvelous moon photos. It reminds me of Carly Simon’s picture book, Midnight Farm. I hope, as others have mentioned, to someday visit Martha’s Vineyard in person. Enjoy the moon as it goes the other way.

  12. What wonderful ‘Wolf Moon’ photos. I too watched the moon rise from my tiny little lake cottage. Spectacular!

  13. Clairellen says:

Thanks Susan, for letting us know that Baby Jack is ok…we were all a bit worried, even if it is a common surgery for kitties. I love your moon photos, and live on Lake Huron; our full moon here last night had a halo around it; I wonder if there is a special name for that, around the Wolf Moon? Seeing the beautiful photos, isn’t it sad that beautiful houses go unoccupied all winter…I think it is the BEST season here in Northern Michigan…lots of time to read, see friends and sew.

  14. Sandy Perry says:

How beautiful the town looks I have aways wanted to go there but never have yet! Maybe someday. I would love to win the books I have it and you signed mine but I have 2 other people in mind that I could give them to and they would dance with joy. I just love all of my books and have been lucky enough to have them signed by you while I waited with beating heart. I am one lucky “Girlfriend”. Hope to see my Willard soon. I really look forward to them. I would love to see some of the olde ones(not the ones in the Willard book) because I bought that for my Aunt Betty Lou and now she wants more! Thank you so much Susan, tell Jack hello for me.

  15. Karen Wenzel says:

I love your stuff – and I have for years. Thanks for keeping it all coming. I also have my great grandmother’s quilts – and a little tuxedo kitty that undecorated as fast as I decorated for Christmas! One kitty behavior that needs eliminating is that he likes to climb up the quilt I have on display in my living room – made by my great grandma. Even though it’s really bad, it still makes me laugh.

  16. Teah Barrow says:

    Thank you!

  17. Sue Miller says:

I see the moon, the moon see me
the moon sees somebody I want to see
God bless the moon and God bless me
God bless the somebody I want to see <3

  18. Linda says:

Your pictures have made me realize how much I miss New England especially at the Holidays. I lived in Mystic Connecticut for years. California just doesn’t have the same ambience.

  19. Emily Merrill says:

I love the moon too! it seems to wake me up each night from my window. Now My kids are loving this years calendar and they all asked what a “Wolf Moon ” was now I can tell them:) and a give away oh yeah! I love holiday’s and my kids make it even more exciting….I think I may be wild and start Valentine’s Day decor, to lighten up the gloomy house. We are all in a bit of shock now that all the Christmas stuff is put away:) Oh I hope I win a book I soo Love them!

  20. Susan Sutherland says:

    Hello Susan,

I have been a fan of yours for a long time. I especially enjoy your cookbooks and calendars. The new year doesen’t start until I have your calendar hanging in my kitchen. I started reading your blog just before Thanksgiving. I found many of your topics so heartwarming. I had (happy)tears running down my face reading about your family, friends and cute little people in kitty suits gathering for the holidays. (my dad passed away three years ago and the holidays just are not the same with out him.) I did a double take when looking at your beautifully set table with the same china pattern that my grandmother used on her holiday tables. (memories, tears, memories, tears…) Your blog got me through the holidays with a few smiles, tears and wonderful memoriesof past holidays.

I just wanted to thank you for all of your talents that you share with your “girlfriends”.

Wishing you and yours a happy, healthy and wonderful New Year in 2012!

    Susan S.

  21. Sandy Perry says:

Well I will try again. I would love to win the 2 books and give them to 2 beautiful ladies I know. I am lucky that I have it and you signed it for me when I saw you here on the coast(west) in San Luis Obispo. I would love it if there is some way we could get the older Willards not in the book. I bought it for my Aunt Betty Lou(82 years young) and now she wants all of them! She doesn’t have a computer and she thinks facebook is foolish. I told her you have a page and now she wants a computer. My poor Uncle Gene. Hope Jack is doing well and please tell Joe hello from all of us. Thank you Susan for all of the beautiful things you show us that we may never have seen.

  22. Marge says:

I just came inside after seeing the Wolf Moon above my neighbor’s house. It is as beautiful here in Elizabeth, PA as it is on Martha’s Vinyard! I hope the light that shines on me shines on everyone that I love.

  23. miriam says:

I think that we’re ALL coming to Martha’s Vineyard!! 🙂 Oh my, your pictures are stunning…..and the moon too. Come to think of it, I don’t think I have ever seen the moon come UP out of the water!!! It is pretty cool that that same beautiful moon is shining down on all of us! Thanks again for sharing the beauty!

  24. Rosemary Kusak says:

I just discovered your website a few weeks ago – I LOVE it.
You already have me hunting for Beatrix Potter figurines (I now have 3).
Martha’s Vineyard is on my dream/wish to visit some day.
    Thanks so much for sharing.
    Rosemary

  25. Deb Huch says:

Thanks for the beautiful bookmark and for the “moon shine” tour. It was a nice ending to a very nice day.

  26. Jan from Michigan says:

You have given me so many gifts today! Loved the Willard! The blog with the breathtaking pictures. You are blessed with so many gifts! Thank you for being you. You are loved by many!

  27. Margaret says:

Looking at your beautiful photography shots makes me realize I need to be good to myself and finally get a nicer camera. I love photography and my current camera is “good enough” but I could do so much more with a telephoto lens and more options. I was opposed to digital photography and bought a basic camera to try out but now I “see the light” of digital and need something more adventurous. You do very nice work and it’s inspiring me to dip into my camera savings fund and treat myself. It’s always interesting to see how others literally view their surroundings. Keep up the good work.

  28. Susan Markoch says:

Hi Susan! Loved the moon shine pictures! Have never been to Martha’s Vineyard, but have high hopes of visiting some day. I sure would love to get your “Love” book in time for my very own birthday on the 13th. of this week :). It would be the most wonderful present ever.

  29. Mrs. Hall says:

My heart is throbbing from looking at the beauty of your moon pictures. I printed the bookmark and have it on my refrigerator so that I won’t miss a full moon this year.

  30. joyce price says:

The moon and as you always say the best things in life are free. Can’t wait to see who wins.

  31. Kathleen Morearty says:

    Hi Susan,

When I check my email I always get a huge smile on my face when I notice an email from you saying you updated your blog. Love it!

    -Kathleen

  32. Kathy McCue says:

Breathtaking photos. Living on L.I. gives me the opportunity to experience moon rise from th water. To be on the bay in a sailboat, motor shut down, surrounded by the silence of the evening, and then to see the moon rise from the horizon is mystical and magical! Ditch the car…you will be as close to heaven here on earth as you can ever get.

  33. Cocoa Fornelli says:

    Susan,
Just love going with you and your T.C. (traveling companion) on your field trips!
What fun!!! We also do little things like just driving around our area, you would be surprised at the folks who have never explored their own areas, or have gone home another way! What a loss for them!

  34. Karen R says:

I love the incurable romantic in you! You have such a wonderful relaxed way of looking at things and life. I love the fact that you make BIG events out of our everyday lives and many things that the rest of us take for granted. You have made me stop and look at my surroundings with new appreciation and I am grateful. Agetwell kiss to Jack!

  35. Andrea says:

I absolutely love your blog!!! I have been a fan of your books for years but just recently started reading your blog. I got my mother reading it too. It seems hard to believe that we don’t know each other because I feel like you could be one of my best friends. I love the way you think, write and your paintings, well, just adorable! I, too, was looking at the moon last night (on a trip to the bathroom) and wondering how many other people were appreciating the beautiful sky. Best wishes for a happy & healthy 2012! Andrea

  36. Jerri Ellen says:

    Hi Susan,

Hope this post goes through. Thanks for the “snapshots” of Martha’s Vineyard. We love to get a peek of your island life! Sounds so “romantical” as Paula Deen always says.

Glad to hear Baby Jack is home resting comfortably!

  37. Lorie says:

Your pics are just fabulous…absolutely love them. Thanks for the bookmark..I too usually can’t sleep well during full moons. My husband says “close your eyes” ha ha…doesn’t work that way….Have a great evening….Give Jack a hug!

    Lorie

  38. Sharie Porter says:

    Susan,
I saw Willard arrived this morning but saved it for my tea time this afternoon and then was surprised to see a new entry on your blog. I feel like I took a little vacation this afternoon. It was a great afternoon with those beautiful pictures. Thanks you so much.

  39. Linda Morrison says:

I love looking at the moon also. So, so beautiful and it’s all of our’s for free!!! Glad Jack’s back and he’ll be his old self by tomorrow.Have a great day Susan!

  40. Tina says:

Love your blog…thanks! Anxious for Willard! You know what I’ll be reading tomorrow! Tina:)

  41. Judy Zuk says:

Wow, Susan, your photographs are breathtaking! The beautiful moon here in Ohio(okay, I know we all share the same moon-ha!) had a hazy ring around it. It has been said the Native Americans expect it to rain soon after this magical ring appears. Thanks for the island magic! Judy Z. umbrella weather tomorrow–no really.

  42. Judi says:

Thank you Susan for the gorgeous photos. Having never been to Martha’s Vineyard I just love seeing your images and hope I get there one day.

  43. Pauline says:

    Dear Susan
Last night I caught the moon just peering up above the row of olive trees to my east. Oh, so beautiful, – I said “charmed I’m sure” and curtsied. I think the other people at the rest stop on the Interstate were a little confused but how could I not – when Luna had shown up so luminously. I’m so glad you are such an enthusiastic moonographer (made up work I’m sure) your photos are lovely.
Your posts have given me a renewed love of all things – from washing my dishes to staring at the stars. (My Beatrix Potter figurines have even come out of hiding) Thank-you for blogging the way you do!

  44. Tasha says:

I love the extra winter tlc you are giving! One of my fav parts of the day is seeing what fun you have to share! Xoxo

  45. Jeanne Hedin says:

My husband and I are star-gazers and moon-lovers as well. He always wants me to go outside and look at the “lady in the moon” that his grandfather showed him as a young boy. Thank you for the beautiful pictures — such a treat! Glad Jack is doing well.

  46. Margaret Wheeler says:

Great big moon on the Central Coast also, plus beautiful sunsets! The moon bookmark is very fun also. How do you have time to do all the inventive things you do?

  47. Debbie Anderson says:

I love to watch the moon also. But alas, we had clouds and rain for this full moon. I’m not complaining – we needed the rain. So it was wonderful enjoying the moon in your part of the world. Thanks!!!!

  48. Bee Stevens says:

As always wonderful posts the last 2 days – my Grandmother was known as
Nonnie and one of the most loving people and such great memories. The
moon pictures are beautiful and I can’t get the “Bella Luna” music out of
my head. My birthday is Feb 13 – almost a valentine. Thanks for the Willard.

  49. alexis washnock says:

    Susan,
I never see the moon I don’t think of my childhood. It brings so many wonderful memories. We didn’t have a television as a child. My parents felt we didn’t need one. We were forever outside and the moon was always with us in the evenings. We played games by the moonlight, we sort of told time by the moonlight and it was our streetlight we played under. It always made me feel safe and never alone. I look at it every single night
and I always feel the thrill and yes it is hard to believe man has left his footsteps on its face. Unbelieveable111111

  50. Beth says:

I want to move to Martha’s Vineyard–preferably living in your barn or garage! Can you handle a lady with a cane, her grouchy (but sweet) husband, and their two cats, Maggie and Millie??

  51. Nena Wilt says:

Wonderful pictures! I enjoyed my virtual tour of New England!

  52. Cathy in Golden, CO says:

Beautiful pictures. “Bella Luna” – I always think of you when I look at the moon now!! The Vineyard is on my Buckel List! Beautiful old houses! – and I LOVE the sea smells and sounds!

  53. Wendy says:

Susan, the way you describe things is just so awesome. Love your descriptions of the beautiful place where you live and love. It must feel like a perpetual vacation. I have always wanted to visit the east coast and someday, mark my words, I will! The inn you posted a picture of looks soooo cozy and beautiful. Maybe that’s where my hubby and I will stay. Ohhh it’s fun to dream!!
I want the valentine book! So tell that random number to pick meeeeee!!! 🙂 What a sweet giveaway!

  54. Linda P says:

A beautiful post, I love watching the moon also and trying to point the stars. One of my favorite field trips as a young girl was going to the Planetarium – so fascinating. I’m a little confused tho – I thought the moon set in the west, and your photos looked like it was going down on the east coast – yes/no?
I would love to give a copy of your book to my best friend, my daughter. She is such a perfect example of Love to her daughters. I love watching her, as a mother and wife. Some times I wish our roles were reversed – LOL!!!
    Big hugs to Jack. xo

  55. TJ says:

    Susan,

I love your photo tour of MV…most especially Edgartown. It’s a lovely little village and I enjoyed both of my visits there. My hubby and I stayed at the Charlotte Inn on an early September visit some years ago. Some years later, my friends and I vacationed in a charming third floor suite of one of the houses (facing the lawn and pool) on the Harborview Inn property across from the Edgartown Lighthouse.

So lovely seeing it all in the moonlight there…and I believe we were looking at the same moon as you that very night here in VA because my son, granddaughter, and I commented that it was very bright and beautiful but not quite a full moon yet!

    TJ

  56. Sharon Byars says:

Kindred Spirits…I was photographing the full moon from my roof top deck in Morro Bay,CA. It was rising over our hills with the beautiful Pacific Ocean roaring in background. In love with the natural beauty God has provided. Thanks

  57. Debbie says:

I thought of you when I saw the full moon when walking my dog. Beautiful pictures!

  58. jean shaffer says:

love your tour of the island and the beauty of the moon-what fun!

  59. jean shaffer says:

    oops! clicked too many times!

  60. Brenda says:

I was at my daughter’s home this afternoon and I was telling her about your blog and all the beautiful pictures and words and music and recipes and everything about you that is so wonderful and I just couldn’t stop talking. I just went on and on. It was like you lived right next door to me and we were best friends. She just laughed and told me to send your blog address to her. I did and now she can enjoy your site just as much as I do. Thank you so much for bringing beauty into my life through your blog and Willard!

  61. Thanks to your bookmark, my husband and I knew not to miss the Wolf Moon last night in Paso Robles. To me, both your photos and text here are among the loveliest in all your blog posts. Anyone who appreciates it as you do deserves to live in such a beautiful place, Susan. Happy New Year!

    Betsy

  62. The Handmaiden says:

Susan, I think I might just cry….the good kind that comes from sweet nostalgia. I moved to MV in 2000 because of YOU! (that’s a story too long to tell here, but one day I will write you a letter so you’ll know how far reaching your influence is.)
My first job was at The Charlotte Inn and those moons….well, there really is nothing like them is there??!!! I lived on MV for 5 years and all of my 4 children got to experience her beauty as well. So a heartFULL of gratitude for your beautiful pictures, your sweet spirit, the walk down memory lane and your own, moon size heart that gives so generously.

  63. Sandy Schaefer says:

    Hi Susan,
I have a pic on my iphone, from Sunday night (8th) , of the breath taking mr. moon shining on the largest freshwater lake in the world. Lake Superior. It was as gorgeous here as it was there. Isn’t that so cool??! I live in Duluth, MN. — and I love moon shine. Two words. 🙂
    God bless.

  66. Kelly J. says:

Such gorgeous photography, Susan…your town in the moon light is beautiful! Thanks for sharing that with us. We watched a pretty moon rise here just a while ago. Just wish we’d have a bit of snow to go with it. I really enjoy seeing silhouettes of deer in the fields at night when the full moon shines on the snow cover. It’s magical…

Beautiful moon tour. This is my favorite cookbook, whomever wins it will surel enjoy it. Xxooxxoo gg

  68. Barbara Thomas says:

Oooohhhh, this moon child would love to win two books!

Also your little Jack is so cute, he looks so debonair, I think he should have my Grandfather’s name, Giaochinni, which is Italian for Jack. Just imagine calling him with an Italian accent, ” Giaochinni my sweet kitty man”!

    Barbara : )

  69. Christine from Lafayette, CO says:

Thank you for the peaceful blog – such a nice way to unwind after work. You captured the magic of the moon perfectly!! The moon rising over the water, the adorable town, the Inn, the water, the lighthouses… all of it! Just beautiful! (and the dipper too!) BTW, how is little Jack? I’ve been thinking of him all day. Hugs!

  70. Jane alexander says:

Last night I mentioned to my husband that a friend in Pa mentioned on Facebook about the moon, then the next post was a photo from Florida about the moon. When I got up this morning, there was the moon in New Jersey. Then I see your blog from Martha’s Vineyard about the moon! How wonderful that it is there for all of us to enjoy. I asked God one time why do we have the moon? Then I found in the Psalms somewhere, i think, that the moon is there to light up the night… Your photos were SO wonderful.
    Love,
    Jane Alexander

  71. Kristi says:

It’s evening in the Pacific NW and I opened your blog post tonight to find over 500 comments. WOW! I’m leaving a comment just in case I’m lucky and my number is chosen. I love your posts about Martha’s Vineyard, etc. I’ve vacationed there twice but would love to visit again.

  72. Candy says:

Susan where did you get the wooden tags with the letters?

  75. Donna Valentine says:

Dear Susan…Thank you so much for sharing your beautiful photos with us! I, too love the night sky and your pictures were just perfect! Especially with the water and the lighthouses, also some of my favorite things, which I miss alot , being a Massachusetts native, transported to the wilds of Montana 🙂 about 20 years ago, with my husband and growing family. I still miss it alot and thankfully can goback now and then to visit. Someday I want to go back to the Cape, and maybe even to Martha’s Vineyard! Would love to see it and meet you!!!!! Well, so thank you again for sharing so many wonderful things! You are truly a woman after my own heart!! I also hope Jack is doing well…Love, Donna

The moon rises over the Wasatch mountains east of Salt Lake City and slowly moves across the valley. It’s breath taking much like your moon photos are by the water.

  77. Joan says:

Are you playing “Susan Nightingale” to Jack? Giving him lots of hugs and kisses?
I would “LOVE” to win the books!

  78. Sharma J says:

Thank you, Susan. I visit your blog and life is once again magical. And your pictures of the moon make it more so.

I’m glad Jack is doing well — I just know he and our Stuka kitty would get along famously. Give him a kitty hug from us.

    Hi, Susan,
I so loved your pictures and post about the beautiful Full Moon. Your pictures are breath taking. The other night I called my beloved to come outside and look at the beautiful Full Moon, we even found ourselves walking around the house/yard just to capture its beauty. You see, my beloved’s name is Badr, which means Full Moon(he is from Egypt). So, every time I see a Full Moon, I get soooo excited. I was a labor and delivery nurse for over twenty years and Full Moons meant a lot to us, it always meant a very very busy night of “birthing babies”, but who can complain about that! Oh, I forgot to mention that Badr and I are engaged, me for the first time at age Fifty, I found true love at Fifty. I am very blessed. One last comment…how is sweet, sweet Jack, I love looking at your pictures of HIM, just adorable. Thanks for all of your posts, Susan, especially during the Christmas Holidays.

Susan , Great job of raising our conscienceness about our wonderful free moon showand pictures, I have always prided myself on seeing and appreciating the wonderful free things in life but I missed the moon. Maybe it’s because the church failed to see the difference between moon worship versus moon appreciation.
The following is a little poem I wrote that I thought you might enjoy.

    How Rice am I

I own a piece of Canada,
    On a winding country road;
A wide green lawn, a maple tree
And a blue sky to behold.
    T’is rich am I.

I own a little lattised deck,
    With wicker chairs covered in blue;
A purple finch sings at my feeder,
    Ever reminding me it’ true.
    That rich am I.

I own a sea of dandylyons,
    All shining the colour of gold;
    Where forget-me-nots and hearts ease,
    Argue for space to hold.
    Yes, t’is rich am I.

    I own a swing a long one,
    That hangs right there in my view;
Where my grandbabies twirl in the sunshine,
    Ever reminding me anew.
    How rich am I.

    I own a clothes-line,a blue one
    Where pink towels wave in the breeze;
I’ve time to sit and wave back,
Thanking God for my life of ease.
    T’is rich am I.

Oh yes! I’ve a new pair of glasses,
    And libraries all over this land;
A flowered cup to drink tea from,
And a brand new book in my hand.
    Awe! t’is rich am I.

Love the pictures of the moon gliding over the water. We are lucky to have large window in our bedroom that the moon likes to shine it’s face in.

  89. Kathleen Smith says:

Thank you for the beautiful moon pictures and descriptions of Martha’s Vineyard! Have only visited there once during the busy summer season–you must savor the quiet of the winter there! Such a beautiful little paradise…you are so fortunate– and so are we to read of all the island joys you describe. Also, LOVE the pictures of your new kitty! What a sweetheart!

  90. Treese says:

I always thought the moon was one of God’s gifts to make us happy. I took my horse out into the Rockies for a ride while the wolf-moon was rising last night. I swear the moon was so close I thought I could touch it.

I got my Willard today it made me appreciate the simple joys in life, I got new ideas and loved just sitting in front of the woodstove and savoring it.
    Thank you, Susan!

how different The Vineyard is in the winter. I have to show this post to my husband who thinks I am crazy for wanting to retire there! That’s ok, I’ll retire there and he can visit me in the summer! Ha!
Heading up for a week in August. Hope to be able to run in to you then!

  93. Jo Ann F. says:

I loved your moon write up! The moon was hovering this morning over the Hudson River on my train ride to work. Cold, crisp evenings lit by the moon are awesome.

  94. Karen C says:

    Hi Susan,

Loved the road trip on MV, I mean” moon”trip. After reading all the comments I see that I am not the only lunar lover out there. I know I drive my husband nuts making him come outside and look at the moon, the stars etc. I have even gone to the http://www.Nasa.gov page and found out when the space station was coming over, and have found it streaking across our night sky. Back when I lived in Florida, one of the neatest things I have witnessed was the space shuttle launching at night. It was unforgettable. Oh the things one can see on clear night. ” Keep your feet on the ground and keep reaching for those stars! ” Hugs to you and yours, and kisses if allowed to Jack!

  95. Yael says:

Do your cats get goofy (goofier?) during the full moon? Ours has been out in the moonlit yard every night. His fur smells of moon and cold…

  96. Lisa Hay says:

I just love the moon too! Thank you so much for sharing the beautiful photos! I wake up to moonlight as well and could just lie and stare at it forever or just bathing in it makes me sleep better having really great dreams!
    Love,
    Lisa xoxoxoxo…

  97. chris says:

Wonderful post, Susan! I too have sat in the car, waiting for the moon to rise over the mountains here. So exciting to see the horizon begin to color, then glow, then ta-da! Moon! I am mesmerized by the full-moon light most months and find myself staying up too late to gaze out the window at the yard and the woods, all lit up!

  98. Bobbi says:

I just love opening my email and seeing one from you, always feels like a little present and I know I’m going to enjoy the little break in my day.

  99. Karin R. says:

Susan, you’re absolutely right, the best things in life are free. Thank you for sharing your beautiful photos…cannot wait for the next full moon to enjoy!

  100. Carole says:

My husband and I just took a drive to check on a new house we are building, and we enjoyed the big, white, full moon on the drive. When I got home I put on my pj’s to get cozy for the evening. I thought I’d check things on the computer before I settled in for the evening, and there is your post with lots of photos of yesterday’s full moon in Martha’s Vineyard. I didn’t get to see it’s reflection in the ocean as you did, but it was still really pretty to see it shining over the winter cornfields here in Iowa.
