Because I just did a long post about the moon for New Year’s Eve, today’s post was supposed to be all about tea time and dishes and cups and teapots, to go with my Willard newsletter that starts going out today. ♥ But, Sunday night, we walked into town to have dinner and even though it wasn’t the “official” full moon yet, the island was SO beautiful, the harbor was SO alive — I couldn’t help but show you! We went home and checked the exact time the first full moon of 2012 would rise. And last night, we were ready. We were moonchasers! Reminded once again, it’s true, the best things in life are free!
Sunday night is what got us started; here we are, just three blocks from home, on the town dock at Owen Park. The thing about living on Martha’s Vineyard, is that you don’t just get the moon, you get island ambience! Shore lapping, rippling water, flags flying, people going in and out of the golden light at the Steamship Building, the salty smell of the sea. A feast of beauty for the senses.
This bit of horn-blowing ambience is docked in front of the building in the first photo — when we got there, the ferry was loading up, getting ready for the forty-five minute trip across the sound to the mainland. The water rippled perfectly to catch the dazzling reflection from the boat windows . . . I can’t even believe we were standing right there, catching such a beautiful sight!
Water like glass for the sailboat masts too . . . this is supposed to be winter, but so far, it’s been hovering near the 50’s on most days; clear and cold at night.
And behind us, the lights were beginning to come on in the little houses that hug the shore. But you are saying to yourself, where’s the moon? Didn’t she say something about the moon?
Oh yes she did! There it is! And there goes the ferry. When we left the house, we really weren’t expecting this, we were just going to dinner. . . but when we saw what was happening . . .
We needed to chase the moon, the ferry, the stars! We got the car and drove out West Chop to the Meadow for a clear view of the sound in time to see the ferry steaming toward Woods Hole. I think that’s one of the dippers up there in the sky on the right!
A little further down, we came to the West Chop Lighthouse and there was the moon, giving us a beautiful shot. All of these photos were taken without flash — for some reason, there is a very strong light shining on the front of this house. This photo reminded us of an Edward Hopper painting. But we wouldn’t want to live here . . . who could sleep? See the stars?
Thought you might like to see a daytime photo of the lighthouse (built in 1817) . . . just as wonderful!
Finally back home, and there’s the moon, peeking through the linden trees over the roof of our house. And this wasn’t even the full moon! I think you can see why, first thing Monday morning, we Googled “time of moon rise on Martha’s Vineyard,” and planned our day around 5:10 pm last night. When the time finally came, we got our hats, gloves, scarves, big jackets and drove to East Chop. We got there early and waited, so excited, as it got darker and darker, scanning the water line, asking each other 10,000 times, “Where do you think it will come up?” And, “Do you see a little light over there?” Trying to pinpoint the spot it would rise. And then, finally, “There it is!!!”
Why is this so exciting? I don’t know. But most of what you’re seeing is reflection on the water; it’s really just a little sliver of a moon, so far, skimming the water line.
And then we were treated to a bit of a light show. . . sparking pink on the water . . .
Then turning yellow. Hello.
Lighting the ocean on fire for one perfect moment in time; how could it get any better than this?
Here comes a fishing boat going home to Menemsha, about to cross the path of the moon; how must it feel to be on that boat?!!! The put-put sound of the engine, the clanging of the rigging, the smell of the sea in the cold wind, the water rushing past the bow, and then, the moon. Lucky!
I hope they did! ♥
So, after taking about 200 photos of this view :-), we got back in the car and drove along the north shore taking more pictures as we went . . .
What a view — I wonder if the owners of this house are inside but turned off the lights to watch this??? I would. And I’d be playing this music too! ♥ Bella Luna!
This is the Edgartown Lighthouse . . . see the red light? It blinks! I got it!! 🙂 So wonderful that we are digital now . . . otherwise I would have gone totally broke on the film for this little outing!
And yet, I will publish an out of focus picture like this! But how could I not? We were “coming to” from being moon drunk, and began to notice how beautiful the Edgartown architecture looked in the moonlight, details gleaming white in the dark.
Edgartown is a very pretty little New England town. But it’s a summer town; almost all the businesses close down in the winter, and many of the homes are occupied only during the summer. If you are ever looking for peace and quiet, Edgartown in the winter is the place to go. This is part of the Charlotte Inn, one of the prettiest Inns on the island.
The beautiful Federated Church . . . built in 1828; the congregation was established in 1642. But I digress. How can I help it. Sublime beauty calls.
It was a wonderful drive back to our neighborhood . . . the moon shined its light on us the whole way. ♥
Full moons wake me up…. I think I have thin eyelids or something, because I’ve always been able to sense or “see” light even with my eyes closed! Here’s the moon around 2 am this morning.
If you have my calendar, you already know that Native Americans called the first moon of the year the “Wolf” moon. They had nature-inspired names for all the moons; next month it will be the “Snow” moon. I recently gave away a Bookmark that includes the dates of the full moons for 2012 and all the Native American names for them . . . in case you just came here from Willard and missed it, here it is again. Click on “bookmark” and you can print it out and become a moon chaser yourself. It was really fun; next time I’m packing a picnic! I think a soft little roast beef and lettuce sandwich, heavy on the mayo, lots of salt and pepper, would be very nice in the warm car with the moon shine. (Notice moon shine is two words! :-))
OK girls, you probably know by now, we have a special give-away today, Valentine’s Day is coming . . . I mentioned in the Willard that I was giving away a signed copy of one of my Love Books, but I’m really giving away two! To the same person! ♥ One for whoever wins the random drawing, and one for the winner to give away to someone they love! I hope one of those two books goes to YOU!!! All you have to do is leave a comment (just click on the little gray word “comment” at the bottom of this post), and that will enter you in the drawing. I’ll let you know who the winner is in a couple of days. Until then, have a wonderful day girlfriends, be good to yourself! ♥
Oh, I am in love with the moon, too! It follows me to work most mornings and I can watch it thru the window in our bedroom at night. Thanks for the fab pics!!
What beautiful photos! I loved seeing them! It’s so lovely to watch the moon rise over the sea. I was reading last night and enjoying a cup of tea, then glanced out my window to see the big old moon shining over my neighbor’s roof. I pulled back the curtains and Sweet Molly jumped right up on the windowsill to enjoy it, too! It was a relaxing evening! You are so fortunate to live in such a lovely place…the old buildings are fascinating, and so full of history!
I’m really keeping my fingers crossed for your latest giveaway. I don’t have your “Love” book (one of the few I do not have). It would be so nice to add it to my Valentine display on top of my cookbook shelf! Can’t wait to find out who the lucky winner will be. It’s such a thoughtful gift! You know we all love you, Susan! Have a wonderful day! ~xoxo~
Wow ~ great blog! I have been getting email Willards for quite awhile but never ventured to your blog. I am with everyone else, I ‘love’ your photos! Thanks so much for taking the time to document special parts of your life for all of us folks out riding the air waves!
Thank you!!
I also follow the Moon… and always notice that the Native American full moon names are on the calendar… THANKS!
Susan,
The moon has been astonishing lately hasn’t it? My 14 year old daughter LOVES taking pictures…especially of the moon! She gets up for school at 5:40 and sometimes goes outside in her jammies to take better pictures of it! I just love how the moon’s light is so bright and wonderful! Have a fantastic day!
Such beautiful shots. What is it about the ocean and the moon…or sun?
God, nature. xoxo
You have moon rises and here on Lake Michigan we have moon sets! It was still high in the sky on my drive up the lakeshore to Grand Haven where I teach but when I catch them, yes, they are breathtaking.
Would “LOVE” to be in the draw
One of my “DREAMS” has always been to visit the East coast including Martha’s Vineyard, NOW with your BEAUTIFUL pictures of your cozy island it is a MUST!!!
We are expecting a “blizzard” here tomorrow(Thursday) in central Wisconsin- maybe a snow day?! Enjoy the moon wherever you are girls!
Love your blog! Look forward to it every day. Lovely pictures of the moon. But I can always tell it’s a full moon by my vivid dreams!
Full moons are the best, and especially, imo, if it’s accompanied by scudding clouds on a cold, windy night. I always love to pause to see the bare branches of trees in front of the moon. On another note, I waited to post a comment today, my 50th birthday, as opposed to yesterday, because I am so inspired by you (Susan!), as are so many of us here, to create and dream (and watch good movies, cook yummy food, and share with our loved ones, among other things), therefore I wanted to mark my special day — for my own benefit — as a day to post on my very favorite heart blog. Thank-you, Susan, for sharing your thoughts, talent, and beauty with us all; you’ve added wonderful inspirational fuel to my rocket fire. Fifties, here I come full throttle 😀
♫ HAPPY BIRTHDAY DEAR FRANCES! ♪ (singing!) Hope it’s a wonderful day! Thanks for sharing it with us!
Happy 50th Birthday Frances!!! Have a fun day and a great year!!
Happy Birthday, Frances! ….and welcome to the 50’s Club! …There are no rules in this club and by the time you make it here, you’ve already paid your dues…so now it’s time to enjoy life and celebrate the wonderful YOU! Blessings to you in the year ahead!
Hi Miss Sue, your pictures were just wonderful….I felt like I was along for the journey with both you and Joe. You know you are really making me miss New England even more that I already am. I’m going to take care of that by planning a trip this coming summer to Martha’s Vineyard. We’ll take the ferry over and stay at the Charolette Inn (I’d better pick a date and make a reservation now) and walk beautiful Edgartown. I’d so love to see it all. I’m going to make it happen. I’ll let you know how it all works out. Thanks again for calling to all our hearts with the simple aboundance of the free things in life that make is so much more enjoyable. And it’s even more wonderful to be able to share it all with all of the “girlfriends”. FOSB 4~Ever! ~ Doreen ~
Good for you Doreen!

Love, love, love your photographs, Susan! They bring back memories of a fun girlfriends trip to Rockport last year. Thank you for sharing your adventures!
Thank you, Susan, for being such a wonderful “virtual” friend – your blogs are often the highlights of my day. Isn’t it grand how some people come into your life and immediately make themselves at home! Have had my best friend Cindy since college and she’s the blessing of my heart … reading your blogs and Willards, we know we’ve found a soulmate … God Bless.
Thank you so much Deborah!
You are such a good friend to have a nice giveaway like this. Thank you for playing with us. I hope it brings you as much joy as it does us.
I love it!!
Dear Susan,
Thank you. What a lovely way to start the day.
Over the weekend the moon here in Ohio was so bright that it woke me up at 3 am. Got up and admired the wonderful serene view of the brightly lit woods.
What wonderful pictures of the moon, and your neighborhood! Makes me want to vacation there! Thank you for the opportunity to win your book! Can’t wait!

Oh, Susan! Thank you! My sister Ellen in Oregon sent me a link to your blog last week, and I am already enchanted with your love of life and all it holds for us to see and feel and do! In February, I will fly to visit Ellen at her home for the first time since I moved to Virginia, and I can hardly wait. We will be going to a Quilt Camp retreat, inspiring in itself, and I will be arriving there filled with creative ideas and inspiration from your blog! Thanks again!
How fun! Say hello to Ellen for me!!
Susan,
When I lived in California my hubby and I would chase out to the Pacific to watch the sun set and take hundreds of pics. We’d sit and watch until the last little flame would disappear “into the water”. This was our “free” date and just loved it!
Wonderful pics of the moon!
Thank you for the full moon adventure! I must come stay at the Charlotte Inn! I’ve only been to Martha’s Vineyard once. I was 15 years old and my sister, a college student at Framingham State, thought it would be fun to have a weekend camping trip on the vineyard. We drove to the ferry, parked the car and then unloaded bicycles and backpacks for our weekend adventure. I must say that I didn’t think it was much fun at the time. A Florida girl doesn’t do well riding a bike up and down all those hills! But it’s a great memory and I’m glad I have it.
We wouldn’t make you ride a bike if you came back!
Thank you for the lovely photos, the bookmark and your wonderful blog.
I look forward to reading it each day. You are a great person!
Yesterday we had a family emergency, hospital scare, but it seems everything may be okay now, Thank God. So to find, not only a new Willard, with so many wonderful Valentine’s Day ideas – one of my favorite holidays, I love decorating with hearts! And a new giveaway!! (This is the only book of yours I don’t own, since I secretly hoped my husband would give it to me.) And then that mystical Moon blog!! La Bella Luna!!!! My cup runneth over! Just looking at those pictures calmed me down, and who couldn’t be hopeful thinking of Valentine’s? Susan, YOU were just what the doctor ordered! You filled my soul! Thank you!! (And so glad Jack is doing well.)
So happy your emergency is better!!! Jack came through with flying colors!
Love the pictures of the moon! I was watching that very same moon on Monday evening, there was such a lovely ring around it. I was going from window to window staring at it and wishing on it! I,too, feel as though I was on your little moon shine adventure…thank-you for sharing.
Reminds me Goodnight Moon…”I see the moon and the moon sees me!” Beautiful post! xo, Nan
YOUR BOOK IS GORGEOUS!!!I hope I win it for me and my friend. I love all your creations, the garland ,sososososo cute!!!!
Love the moon! Thank you for sharing your beautiful moonscapes from Martha’s Vineyard! I have never been there and always wanted to go……this brings me closer to getting there.
I would love a chance to win a copy of your book! I love your work. 🙂
Those pictures of the moon coming up out of the water are simply magnificent. I love the orange reflection on the water. Thanks so much for sharing. You’re the ‘BOMB’!!!
Oh my gosh Susan, those pictures were just breathtaking!! And to catch the ferry at the right time, and then the little fishing boat crossing the path of the moonlight. That was fate for sure. You are just so good to us by doing all you do and always thinking of us. I know we have said it before, but I’m saying it again, we do love you so much for all your thoughtfulness and everything you do for us. And now another chance to win something, it just gets better all the time! I would really, really like to win that book.. My husband got me a couple of your books for Christmas, but the Love book was not one of them, so I would cherish it if I got it from you. Thanks Susan! FOSB xxxooo hugs, Sharon
Thank you Sharon, you’re a doll!
I love this post! Have had some beautiful moons this week… I am always amazed at God’s creation!
Lady Susan,
Just thought I would like to share with you and the others what I did with you little “Love” book, when it first came out. One of my daughters’s friends was getting married. We wanted to something fun and different. We had a bridal luncheon under the apple trees, which were blossoming. So much fun and we gave her your special little “Love” book. It was a big hit to the bride and those attending. See what happiness you bring to others! 🙂
See what happiness you bring to me? Thank you Glenda!
Thank you for the “bella luna” photos. Spreading such peace!
Good Grief Gertie!!! Your beautiful blog just blows me away!!! Sitting here loking at it is my eye-candy treat to myself each day!!!!
When I was a teenager and babysat for my neighbor, I was asked if I would like to be a “mother’s helper” for the summer at their rental cottage on Martha’s Vineyard. I was so excited about going and then…sadly — the ferry went on strike! The whole trip was cancelled. Such a disappointment! I’ve always wondered what Martha’s Vineyard was like and I never got another chance to visit the island. Through your beautiful photos and your website, now I can see what I’ve been missing. I’ve just recently retired (oops…age give-away)….and now I hope to be able to make up for lost time.
I’ve been able to get some of your older out of print cookbooks at used book stores; I would LOVE to have a signed copy of your book. Have I told you how much I.LOVE.YOUR.BLOG?!!!! Thanks for sharing your talents Susan and brightening my days. I’m your biggest fan you know. xoxo
That was so nice Dorothy, thank you! Terrible about the ferry going on strike, they must have made a law against it or something — it’s never happened since I’ve been here, thank goodness, we would all be held hostage over here! You’ll have to try again some day!
It was the early 60’s when that happened..I do hope I get a chance to visit MV and I hope to stay at that beautiful Charlotte Inn. PS -You’re a wonderful ambassador for the Island.
xox
Helps to love it so much!
Wow, so many comments. Put my name in the hat for the giveaway. Loving the moon photos.
I grew up in Hawaii where we had wonderful views of the moon and the stars. The local newspaper published sky maps which showed the constellations and I remember lying on the ground as a child looking up and trying to find the Big and Little Dippers and Orion and the Southern Cross and the planets. And, of course, the moon was always the Queen of the sky! I now live in California and we are lucky if we can see the moon and a few stars because of “light pollution” caused by the city lights. Thank you for posting such beautiful pictures of your little island!
I grew up in the S F Valley . . . back when you could still see the stars, and I would do the same thing, sleep out in the backyard and look at the stars. Such a good memory! Hawaii must be truly wonderful for stars!
Oh Susan – exactly just the thing I love about your blog – just getting to follow you around on your wonderful little island – the dearness of day to day life!
So glad little Jackie boy is doing fine!
I’ve already decorated for Valentines Day with both of your books – LOVE and SWEETS to the SWEET – Oh! and how could I forget – GIRLFRIENDS also. Gotta have the pink and red and white thing going!!
Whoever the lucky person is who wins your book will just love it!!!
I’m like you, Susan, I love nature and everything about it. I too take pictures of trees, the moon, clouds, sky, lakes, animals, old houses and barns…. Just about anything in the world around me.
My favorite holiday is by far Valentines Day!!! I love love love it so very much. Way more than Christmas and more than my birthday. Mainly, because it is an excuse to celebrate those I love. I totally agree with you, it is not for lovers only, but Everyone we love. It’s all about LOVE! Thank you so much for this valentine blog and the beautiful pictures of the moon and your world. Lots of love and prayers to you.
Girl after my own heart!! ♥
Ahhhh… I have two very special teenage dughters in my life that I’d *LoVe* to share this Love book with on a cold wintery night…..
I am a new reader. Found you at Christmas time, and read your entire blog start to finish(not like I didn’t have a zillion things I should have been doing). It is a respite for the soul, here. Thank you, Susan. I would love to be entered into the drawing. Carly
Beautiful moon! It came up looking very ghostly last night (streaky clouds across his face), here in the San Gabriel Valley (Southern California), where it was also… 50 degrees.
I thought “Wow!” while reading your entry about the beautiful full moon we’ve had this week. Martha’s Vineyard is beautiful in moonlight. What splendor God created in the heavens for us on Earth to enjoy! My uncle worked at NASA as an engineer during the Apollo mission, so the moon has always held a certain fascination for me.
I have to add “Good night nurse!” in excitement about your Valentine’s give-away and a huge thank you for being so generous to your readers and fans. You are such a blessing to us all and I look forward to each new post.
Thank you Kay!!
Oh Susan, how you make my day….
When my son was small he thought the moon was his. Every evening he needed to go outside and see ‘his moon’. Where it was, what it looked like that evening, etc. Each year I bought him a moon Christmas ornament. Sometimes bears sitting on moons, as he was also quite fond of bears. So sweet.
I live on the north shore of Long Island, but I think I may be on the wrong East Coast Island. I think I really belong on your lovely Island.
Very likely! Email your son a link to the moons . . . and tell him you were thinking of him! 🙂
Oh, but we love you too, we really do! And for a cute aside, did you notice the skipped letter in this post? So charming of you to point it out on the calendar, probably not so charming of me to point it out here…but, it is the beauty of being human, no? Anyway, if you didn’t catch it, I’ll never tell. You have sustained me through my Persephone-like trek through the Hades that is retail over the holidays. So glad to be back and free to post. La – la – la! Happiest of New Years, dear Susan, and what a gorgeous moony post. Thank you!
Ha ha ha, welcome back! No, of course I missed it, but I think a missed letter is now going to have to be my logo!!
I enjoyed my armchair travels through your beautiful Martha’s vineyard. Your new little feline is too funny. Such a great kitten age- full of spunk and spontaneity.
Thanks for your most personal and warm writings.
Meg
Hello again Susan! I just showed my college age son your awesome moon chasing and lighthouse photos. He was thrilled and loved them all!! He couldn’t believe they were taken in the moon light, and not the day light! The moonbeam across the water is so inviting, you wish you could walk along it’s path and touch the moon! Give that little Jack a hug from us, he’s such a cute little kitten!!! Hope all is well with his recovery today.
He’s good Carilyn!! Sweet as pie!
Such beautiful photos! I love moon watching (and the ocean, and lighthouses – *sigh*)
Confession: I am one of those ladies who “hates Valentines Day,” but your Willard has inspired me to look at it another way. Just a little opportunity to do something special for those I love.
Thank you!
You can make someone’s day!!! ♥
Hi Susan,
I love this post!!! Wonderful, beautiful, inspiring!!! I have been looking at the moon too, just never thought of chasing it!! That’s a new thing I will have to do!
Thanks for the idea….Please enter me too! (I just noticed I “talk” in exclamation points!!)
I do too!!!
Loving the moon bookmark, loving the kitty pictures, loving the whole blog!
Leslie
What a lovely book. Please put my name in the hat!
God has blessed us with such beauty! Oh, happy day…..
Hi, Susan! I have most of your cookbooks…and LOVE each and every one of them!! My kitchen is not complete without your calendar…and I had not noticed the little “oopsie”…now I’ll have to check it out when I get home…but I agree…it adds to the charm of it all! Your “Heart of the Home” calendar is the ONLY one that is right in my kitchen…I’ve bought them for years now, and its always fun to look back at your wonderful artwork, recipes, and fun sayings!! Thanks for making my home a little more special!! <3 <3 <3
Thank YOU Marcia! (Hope this gets to you, blog is still acting up and not letting me answer comments! Here we go . . .)
love the pictures, I love taking pictures of the moon, too!
Isn’t it amazing to think that thousands of people were probably watching the same moon you were that night? I know I was!!! 🙂
These are awesome pictures Susan! And your narrative is just delightful. What an exciting “dinner” outing for you and Joe! LOL! Thank you ever so much for the chance to win your sweet little LOVE books. I will give BOTH of them away if I win! You know, to keep spreading the LOVE!! 🙂 Thanks for your heartwarming blog. It is a treasure, as are you!
I just received and, of course, immediately read Willard. Thank you, thank you for the wonderful Valentine’s Day inspiration! I may just have a girlfriend’s Valentine party again. It has been years since I hosted one, and I can’t imagine why. Why do we allow time and tasks to distract us from the truly important things in life, like girlfriends, tea, talks and everything pink, red and lovely? Thank you for the reminder! (maybe your book would make a lovely “door prize” for a dear girlfriend??)
Also, your moon photos are so lovely. How beautiful it is where you are. It’s beautiful here too, but again, I find myself in need of a reminder of that occasionally. Just last evening as my son (17 yrs. old) was heading home, he stopped to call and tell me to “Hurry, look at the moon! right now!”. It was huge and gorgeous and orange with clouds blurring the edges. And in my heart a “Hooray!” All those times shuffling him out the door to “just look!” have been rewarded. Now, through the wonders of technology, he can pick up his cell phone and call his mom to say “just look!”. What mom doesn’t love that? Thank you again, for the reminder. Reading your blog helps to keep me connected to the things I might be too busy to remember otherwise. What a blessing you are!
Thank you Pam — what a good son you have!!

Thank you for another travel-logue, Susan…it has been warm here in MN…yesterday it was 50* and people were golfing…not so much today…a winter storm watch til tonight…I’m actually enjoying the snow that fell last night…will winter stay this time???…only time will tell…
I have been chasing the moon the last couple of days, too. Gotta keep that battery charged
The wolf moon is as special this week as I have seen it in years.
I like to take every opportunity I can to thank you for your blogs and the anticipation of Willard. You are a part of my life and I thank you.
Linda fleming
Thank you for another travel-logue, Susan…warm weather has graced MN too…however, snow arrived last night and it is colder today…will winter stay with us this time???…only time will tell…I can tell you are readying your house for Valentine’s Day…you inspire me to get my Christmas decorations put away and get the “hearts” out…

I love the moon…I’ve been drenched in the “moon-rays” in the evening of these last few days. How can I not actually feel the wonderment for the mysteries night sky from the ancient ones who are my ancestors. I can actually see the rabbit’s ears perk up as he listens to the native people talk about him and remark how beautiful he shines. (you know the rabbit who lives on the moon don’t you?) I am and always have been a night owl and am most comfortable creating in the dark of night and with the brightness these last few nights…it’s not hard to want to create by the moonlight itself. I love the moon!
These photos were amazing! Sight unseen I have had a fascination with Martha’s Vineyard and one day hope to visit. I am now able to answer my daughter’s question – “What’s with you and Martha’s Vineyard?” – thank you!
🙂 LOL
Hi, Sue! Loved your pre-Valentine Day blog entry and all the wonderful new things that say ‘l♥ve’ in your web store! I did order the darling neck-a-lace (that’s what my son called necklaces when he was little. Gotta love that.) and the dish towel, though I have to admit, I may have it framed. Too darling to dry dishes!!! Love all of your books…truly, the publishers simply do not know what they are doing when they let your books retire to the out-of-print status. Breaks my heart…I find myself ‘rescuing’ your books when I find them in used bookstores or online….love to share them with all of my girlfriends. My friend, Mary, received a surprise package in early December with gently used copies of Heart of the Home, Vineyard Seasons and Christmas from the Heart of the Home. She moved to Washington state and need a little cheering up. ☺
She was so surprised! I am slowly helping her build her collection of your books…she loves your work! I love the idea of your Valentine drawing…an autographed book and Valentine….love, love, LOVE it! Can’t wait to see who wins! xoxo peg
We should have grown up next door to each other, I keep thinking that!! Thank you Peg!!
Great moon pics!! I hope one day to visit Martha’s Vineyard!! What a beautiful place! It’s a gloomy day here in Apopka, so I just pulled out your “Love” book, gonna grab my babies(chihuahua’s!!) & get snuggly under the covers!! Thanks Susan & I hope Jack’s doin’ good! ;0)
He’s great! Thanks Monica! Stay cozy!
The Wolf Moon was on my birthday! Here in N. California it was beautiful…& still is shining brightly! Love my (your) new calendar for 2012…Happy New Year!
Perfect birthday gift!!! Happy Birthday Cheryl!
I so look forward to your blog and the great pictures that you include for those of us who live in “the other Washington”. Martha’s Vineyard has now become a destination to visit. My Willard just arrived. Yipee!
Thanks for sharing such great pictures.
I did not miss the “s” in reasons on the calender AT ALL!! 🙂 Little things like that keep us all human and connected. Never dull or ordinary! I would cherish the “love” book.
Thank you for the moon pictures and the bookmark. You have picqued my interest. I now cannot wait for the next one.
These pictures are just wonderful, I can hear the beach sounds, and smell the salty air! I need a beach fix, and this is a close second!
Thank you so much for sharing them. And what a wonderful way to spend your time– chasing the moon!
I’ll always remember when my new husband and I were on a road trip in 1957 making our way East from California and, in the dark of night, I spotted a full moon in New Mexico! I asked him to stop so I could take a picture and he graciously did. I treasured that full moon memory forever. Thank you for the great memory you brought back to me that my late husband and I shared on our honeymoon. I love your letters and what a great idea you gave me to share with my friends on Valentine’s Day. You’re right you know, Valentine’s Day is for everyone and a special time to let all your BFF know you care about them!
Yes!!
My friend Carol opened her MV summer home to me many years ago and also shared her love for Susan Branch. I fell in love with the island and have returned many times. I would love to be able to share a signed copy with my dear friend so I hope my name is a winner. Love your blog, FBook and Williard. -Sharon
My heart belongs in Martha’s Vineyard and your photo’s prove it. I wish I could talk my hubby into it 🙂
Love LOve Love the moon pictures- I never seem to get good pictures when I try but I will keep trying- yours are beautiful! My 9yo niece and I recently “chased the moon” as we were traveling home from Nutcracker in the Castle and watched as the moon seemed to disappear into the horizon. It looked as if it went down to the town and the town swallowed it! I took the wrong exit because we were so intent on watching the moon! Thankfully we were in familiar territory and I didnt get lost!
Ha ha ha!! That’s what the moon does to people!
I just love reading your blog posts! They are ALWAYS so uplifting! Thank you for the delightful giveaway!
I love your writing and your photographs! I could imagine myself there with you going through the town, taking photos of the moon and the homes there. Beautiful!
Just finished reading Willard and wanted to tell you about our Christmas tea. We each brought a “special” teacup and a story about what made the teacup special. The twist was the story could be truth or fiction. We laughed and cried and had the best time. It was an evening we will never forget!
What a smart idea! Love that!
I have been watching the Moon here in SLO, Ca and it’s beautiful. Thanks for sharing your view of the Moon as well. Your new Love book looks great. I really enjoy your blogs! xoxoxo

Hi, Susan!
Love all your lovely art work and the great items you stock your web store with.
Please add me to your list for the drawing. I would love to receive the lovely book.
Happy Valentines Day!
Best regards,
Cynthia
WOW! Totally “Moonstruck” here now–thanks to your terrific photos! Susan, you have a marvelous talent for taking everyday things, creating “cuteness on paper” and sharing your contagious love with us. Personally, I thank you for making me smile whenever I see your work. Don’t ever retire!
I’m going to try very hard not to! 🙂
I too *love* to watch the moon.
Thank you for the lovely trip to your island world!
♥♥loves to You
Wow, Susan!…. I guess it’s safe to say that you have your finger on the “pulse” of what interests and moves a lot of women! Your sharing is such a refreshing respite from the problems in our world…and there are many…that can’t be denied; BUT, I firmly believe each one of us can choose our perspective on life…we can choose happiness…we can choose gratitude….we can choose to live in the present moment. I’d dare say that this “little” blog of yours..(near a thousand responses on one post!!!) is doing wonders in awakening the hearts of many, many women around the world….including mine. Wouldn’t it be just lovely if we all carried that new awareness and appreciation into our daily lives and brightened our little corners of the world? I can feel it happening, Susan…I can. Thank you! I know you are a very modest and humble woman but by simply being “real” and “shining your light” for others to see…you are really making it not only easier for others to follow your path but almost impossible NOT to!
I never meant this comment to be so philosophical…it just came out…oh, well…it needed to be said, I guess.
I hope you’re having a wonderful day….hope this blog doesn’t pull you away from the other things you’re doing in your life….after all, you’re just one woman (even though you have the heart of 10)!
Love you…
Debbie

Now look at that. I’m not often at a loss for words!!! I don’t know what to say . . . It isn’t me alone, it’s all of us kindred spirits together! But you made a tear come to my eye, so touched by your words, thank you Debbie . . . just like all of us, to think that we help, even a little bit, is such a great feeling!!! People tell me, you shouldn’t reply to the comments! But they are impossible to ignore!!!!!!! Dear hearts, that’s what comes to this blog! Thank you so much Debbie! Lucky lucky lucky! xoxo
You’re welcome! Lucky lucky lucky!
I would love to have signed copies of “Love” to give to my daughter for her valentine gift. Thank you for the opportunity to be in the contest.
I love this book. I would be such an honor and joy to have one and especially signed by you. I want to share with you that I love Valentine’s Day even though there is good and sad things about it for me personally. Good is that my birthday is on 2/13 the day before VD and my sister Wanda is so lucky her birthday is on Valentine’s Day. We are not twins we are 16 years apart and never raised together but are very much the same in looks and personality. The sad thing is that our Father passed away on 2/15 so it is hard for us to celebrate our birthday and the day of love Valentine’s Day every year. This books would be a joy to both of us. Susan, you really inspire everyone with all the good things you say and do. God bless you always.
I understand. . . certain dates just make us sad. Wishing you Happy Birthday — a day of love, and say hello to Wanda for me!
I understand Karen, some dates just make us sad. Sending best wishes for a Happy Birthday filled with love! And hello to Wanda!
I love the moon the days leading up to and after the “actual” full moon! It shines in my bedroom window at night (around 1:00 – 2:00 am) and I just can’t bear to close the blind even though it is fairly bright! Your books are wonderful – what a fabulous gift!! Thank you for sharing with all of us on a regular basis… 🙂
My pleasure, as I’m sure you can tell! Thank you for being here–taking the time to comment!
I wrote a comment yesterday but didn’t see the post comment sign so sorry .
I was telling you about my wonderful kitties like your Jack, so fun and full of trouble, but I love them so. I live in Texas and our moon scapes are beautiful
thanks for your time and joy in life. JoAnn
Thank you JoAnn, don’t know what happened, but here you are!!!
Dear Susan:
I love you! You are so sweet and all you do for all of us is so appreciated. Love your blog, books, recipes, drawings, bookmarks, stationery, wallpaper, kitties-EVERYTHING! We are lucky to have you in our lives and thanks for the beauty you bring into it! HUGS!!
Debbie
Thank YOU Debbie, for being here!
I just found your blog. It is truly beautiful! I just am having kind of a blah day, and it is hard to find true genuine friends for some reason when you’re a grown-up sometimes…but reading your notes today cheered me up! Thank you!
This is a very good place to find kindred spirits!! xoxo
and thank you for the bookmark! I’m going to print them to include for my sweet little Valentines who love to read…my two gorgeous girls!
I love all of you calendars, but the “Love from the Heart of the Home” was my first one and the one that made me fall in love with all of your things. I buy your calendars for all my girls’ night movie friends. And I love to curl up with Willard and a cup of tea from my own Christmas teapot.

I was reminded of a favourite from the wonderful “Evangeline” by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow as I read this post……I had to hurry and look it up for you!
“Meanwhile apart, in the twilight gloom of a window’s embrasure,
Sat the lovers, and whispered together, beholding the moon rise
Over the pallid sea and the silvery mist of the meadows.
Silently one by one, in the infinite meadows of heaven,
Blossomed the lovely stars, the forget-me-nots of the angels.”
(sigh)♥
How beautiful!!! I want to paint this!! thank you Carolyne, sigh….is right. ♥
My in-laws had a home in Edgartown for 25 years. Seeing the photos of Martha’s Vineyard, the water and the moon brought back wonderful memories of a very special place. Thank you! I have enjoyed your books and emails for many years.
They put a smile on my face and are beautiful reminders me of life’s simple pleasures.
Wow. Last night during a bout of insomnia I saw 500 something comments, and now you’ve doubled. I told myself not to comment, because I worry that we are keeping you too busy! I’m sure you have other things to do, like playing with Jack and Girl Kitty, or moon observation. Because we really need you to remind us about these most important things! But here I am….commenting. But I would love to give this book to my friend, and I wouldn’t mind one for myself too…. I’m SO selfish.
xoxo No you’re not! 🙂
