You Got to Have a Dream . . .

You got to have a dream, if you don’t have a dream, how you gon-na make a dream come true . . . Happy Talk, South Pacific

I have news.  It goes with Musica.

My news has something to do with this enchanting little English cottage.  But first we have to get into the way-back machine.  Are you in?  Comfy?  OK, here goes:

Twenty-six-ish years ago, I was sitting on a red leather stool, talking to my girlfriend, at a clam bar in a wonderful restaurant here on the island (gone now) called the Ocean Club.  I sat at the bar, across from an aproned bartender who was shucking oysters, placing them on a plate of crushed ice, in front of a huge gilt-edged mirror that went to the ceiling, reflecting tall open windows that went all the way around the room.  I was wearing a long, narrow, pin-striped skirt with a wide leather belt, high-heeled boots, and a white linen, high-collared shirt.  I know what I was wearing because the person I met that night remembers; he’s one of two guys who sat down on the empty stools next to us.  I leaned past the tall one to say hello to the one I already knew; he said hello and, over restaurant clatter of silverware, conversation, and music, he introduced me to the stranger.

His name was Joe. We were sitting almost shoulder to shoulder and were rather instantly simpatico; he seemed to be a very nice person.

For a little background, this pleasant encounter took place at about the same time I had decided I was finished with men forever. My heart had become so tattered by life; a sad divorce that left me feeling identity free and minus any personality; and then, from years of trying to find love again in all the wrong places; I had finally given up.  It was all just too fraught with danger.  No more, I said to the wall in my kitchen, toasting myself with my teacup in the reflection of my kitchen window.  It wasn’t the way I’d thought my life would go; but obviously I was meant to be alone.  I’d come to terms with it.  I had a tiny little house in the woods with a wonderful garden where wild blueberries grew; I was painting a cookbook; it almost substituted for love.

Joe seemed nice, he was very friendly; it wasn’t long, that first night, before he was feeding me from his plate, which is what he does.  He seemed harmless too.  He was five years younger than me for one thing.  A baby.  A very cute, tall, baby, but still, a baby.  Even though I had been told by two different forseers of the future, a palm reader and an astrologist, that I was going to fall in love with a tall man with a beard; I did not recognize him.  I discounted what they said because I was not a beard person.  Even though, years before, I had asked my diary for a 6’2″ Leo who could cook and even though Joe told me he was a Leo and he ran a restaurant and cooked there, still, I did not recognize him.

Our conversation, that night, went everywhere.  I learned that he loved Fred Astaire, (have I told you that I love Fred Astaire?  I do!!) which was unheard of in any of my relationships with any men ever, they didn’t even know who he was.  Joe had Fred Astaire albums!  He’d sailed on a ship to England with his mother when he was twelve.  I dreamed all my life of sailing to England!  All the Fred Astaire movies had such things in them. We talked about that a lot.  The conversation was fun, but he was still too young for me; I had completely convinced myself there was never going to be any more love in my life; I felt secure because of it, my heart was now safe, protected from the ravages of caring about someone too much.  It was another five months before Joe and I had our first date.  Even then, I was surprised he asked me out, and almost didn’t go.  Then I thought, he’s a nice kid, he comes from a big family, he cooks, I have nothing else to do, it’s winter, OK; I’ll go.  I thought these were probably the same reasons he asked me out!  Nothing else to do. Just a friend.  Blah blah blah.

Luckily, that isn’t at all what he thought, and pretty soon, neither did I.

Which brings me to my news.  It’s almost my birthday.  Joe and I had our 25th anniversary in February.  That’s when Joe said, dreamily, “Let’s go back to England for your birthday.”  No!  Silence.  Can we?  More silence.  Thinking noises, ticking of clock, sleeping on it.   We’ve been trying this idea on for size ever since, mulling it over; doing the pros and cons.  There are big cons: we absolutely should not go.

We have kitties; our newest kitten is only eight months old; how can we leave them?  It will kill me.

I have to finish my Breakfast Book!

It’s too expensive, we shouldn’t be spending money right now.

If we go anywhere, it should be to see my parents, I miss them!

BUT, we thought pragmatically: we are healthy, my parents are healthy, the kitties are healthy and life is short.  Maybe next year my knees will give out, or Joe’s back, or Girl Kitty will get sick; something could happen.  We should go now, and go out west afterwards.

So, we are.  We called the Kitty Babysitter and asked what he was doing from May through July; he said he would love to come live in our house; he promised big love and ball-throwing for the kitties; so Joe bought the tickets at Cunard last week.

This is me on the last trip we took to England in 2004; we dreamed, saved, and planned for this trip since the day we met.  I look calm, but inside, every fiber of my being is jumping for joy because I’m standing on the deck of the QEII (which has since been retired).  We are about to sail down the Hudson, past all the twinkly-lit-up buildings of New York City; that’s the Queen Mary 2 in the berth next to us.  And come this May, we’re doing it again, for two months, from New York to Southampton, this time on the Queen Mary.  We have unfinished dreams to fulfill in England.  I haven’t been to Beatrix Potter’s house in the Lake District!  I want to fill my inspiration cup; to see all the gardens we missed the first time, to visit loved ones over there.  It’s been a long time since we took a vacation, all we seem to do is work. We need a moment to meander with no particular place to go!

For example, look at this place we found sitting on the side of the road last time.  We pulled in, drawn like magnets; stayed the night, had tea, then a room-service breakfast on a tray, propped on feather pillows in the flowery wallpapered, high-ceilinged room; afterwards we wandered through the garden listening to the bees . . . it was all serendipity, an accident.  If I saw a picture like this, I would think it wasn’t real.  But it’s real all right, just sitting over there, in clear view of anyone passing by.

Einstein said, “Creativity is the residue of time wasted.” We need some of that residue.

You need more Musica?  How about this one . . .

I’m not going to tell you where we are going this time, because I want you to be surprised.  Yes, we talked it over and we thought we’d take you with us! Through the magic of the internet, a travel blog!  Maybe you’d like a little arm-chair view of the Atlantic Ocean over the ship’s rail?  Thought you’d enjoy seeing the English tea they serve everyday at four o’clock on board the ship?  Hoping you’ll like old houses and walking through very old and gorgeous English gardens (the bluebells will be in bloom!); and enjoy pictures of pub food, and probably pictures of English dogs and kitties; maybe some of you would like to go to the Lake District for a visit to Beatrix Potter’s house too?  Maybe even a weekend in London? Joe’s been working it out so we’ll have as much wireless service as possible (there will be places where there isn’t any; it’s going to be spotty, but I’ll do the best I can to update the blog with photos and video).  Our only real drawback is not being able to send fragrance through the internet.  The sea, the gardens.  But oh well; the Flower moon will be full the day after we sail; I checked.  Moon over the water.  Oooo la weee.

Remember this diary I kept on our 2004 trip?  To make up for the fact that the Breakfast Book is going to be late, I thought I’d keep another diary this time, sort of like it, only cuter; one that will go to print and be published just as soon as we get back.  In it, along with photos, watercolor drawings, recipes, garden views, and stories of this trip, I thought I’d tell the whole saga of meeting Joe, our first date, and how we decided to throw our lot together and try to make a go of it, since without him, who knows if this dream could have ever come true.

Now. Dream. Part II, the sequel. The countdown has begun.

Join us, on the other side of the bridge . . . for this story is proof that somewhere over the rainbow, skies are blue, and the dreams that you dare to dream, really DO come true.  XOXO

  1. We are all in awe….and so happy for you! A dream can come true for you….maybe it can for me, too! Enjoy this special time and I’ll savor every moment that you share with us!

  2. O HURRAH! You just went West; it’s **time** to go East and awweeeee you’ll go! The book is perfect, AAAbsolutely Perfect; was thinking and hoping that was in the making. Take it from someone who knows the brevity of life; there’s no time like the present to fall in love all over again and make warm, wonderful memories to hold close against the cold of aloneless.
O HURRAH! I am SO happy for both of you; well done!

  3. Sheryl from Chico says:

So many people want to connect with you through your blog and I am one of them. I am excited also to see England with you and Joe. I have been looking at photos of Joe for a long time, but really you were hiding how handsome he is/was, whatever. The trip, the timing of it, all your ideas from blogging to writing a new book with your journal of it are approved by me. haha I look forward to each moment. Big hugs and love, Sheryl from Chico aka Sheryl from Foresthill…CA

  4. Margot says:

Sounds like the way I felt when I met my Arnie in 2009. I guess I didn’t listen to the details of my own prayers, but God did. You go girl!!! The cats will be ok and the book can wait, the girlfriends will wait. I would love to see the inside of one of those stone cottages. Love Ms. Potter and Mr. Astaire.
I want you to know that I am using my blank books and I found new ones at the fabric store today. I will start a travel one.

  5. Treese says:

I lived in England for a few years and still own a Victorian house on the Tyne River in Newcastle-Upon-Tyne. I would go to the village of Cumbria as often as possible and then on to Beatrix’s spread. It is breathtaking. I even windsurfed on Lake Windomere in the summertime. The gardens there I am sure are made with the same flowers that grow in the fields of Heaven-they are so beautiful. Look for the Galloway Cattle that are raised there.

Most of all there is a little fish and chip shop. It is easy to find as it is in the town center (Cumbria). The road forks and it is dead center in the road where it has been for over a hundred years. It is nothing fancy they use to put the fish and chips in newspaper, but now it is in butcher paper. Don’t even think of going near it after the pubs close there are too many people in line!

This makes my heart ache for England, but I knew I would always come back to the family ranch in Colorado. Someday when I can’t rope or ride any longer I will head back to my little English home. It does have a beautiful garden that is kept up for me by a grounds keeper.
Enjoy your travels and I will be enjoying your trip vicariously.

    • Cathy in Golden, CO says:

Whoa Treese. Sounds like you have an incredible life! I am just amazed by the things I read here – in this SB blog!

      • Treese says:

Whatca doing up in Golden? Pretty country up there! Yes, I feel everyone has a special story and a interesting life. I love to listen to people tell me about their lives. The ones that are REALLY interesting are the people who say they live a boring life! LOL.

I must go and pack now and makes my thousand of lists of what I have to do before I start reading about what we are doing.

  7. Buzz'n Bea says:

  8. Terry says:

Susan, I am so happy for you! That is wonderful news! My oldest sister lives in England. She has been begging my husband and I to come for a visit. The problem is my husband won’t fly. Maybe some day we will sail over too. I will share whatever you share with us, maybe that will convince him.

    Happy planning!

    Terry

  9. Diane says:

Oh, I’m so excited!! I’ve really been looking forward to the Breakfast Book, but it’s okay if it’s a little late. It’s worth it to be able to see Beatrix Potter’s house and the Lake District through your blog. It will be the next best thing to going there myself. I know you’ll show it through eyes similar to mine. Now I’ll just have to sit down and watch our Beatrix Potter cd in happy anticipation of what you’ll show us. Have an absolutely wonderful memory making trip, Susan.

  10. Betsy says:

Well Susan…the beginning of your story sounds like my life…….except I had three wonderful children to try and forge ahead with. You have a great love story. Have a wonderful trip! Please, Please send us pictures of Beatrix Potters house. I will live being there through you. I am so excited for you and the chance to see pictures!!!! Your the best tour guide!

This is the type of trip my late husband and I talked of so many times, now I feel like I can take it with you and Joe. Thanks for making that dream come true for me too!

  13. Jody Gray says:

I am so excited for you and this dream vacation. I cannot wait…..thank you..thank you for taking us along…….

Oh! Oh! Oh! Take us with you!! I’m jumping up and down! I get to go to England (for free this time!). I’m sooooooooooo excited to go with you. I am wanting to go there as well – so this will help me imagine it even closer into my own life!

First of all – you’ll be there for the Diamond Jubilee – THAT IS AMAZING. I love the queen so much. You must read (before you go) The new book by Sally Bedell Smith called Elizabeth the Queen – it’s fantastic. I just finished it last week and you’ll have a whole new appreciation and love for her and her sacrifices.

I want lots of pictures of a “real english tea” – you will have tea every day right? Can you go to Highclere (I think that is the name) where they give tours of the real house on Downton Abbey? Will you get to wave to the Royals during the 4 days of the jubilee? So much fun! Such a good decision. Joe rules.

  15. Carole K says:

Oh Susan!! This is FANTASTIC! I so enjoy your books and art and writing–and how generous of you to take us all along! I’ve never been, but everyone in my family has, and now, I’ll get to ‘go’ with YOU!

so glad you’ll put this in a book–can’t wait to order my copy!
    Blessings to You and Joe!

  16. Barbara T, Wolverine Lake MI says:

OH!!! I am sooooo excited for you! My own dear penpal of 22 years lives in West Yorkshire and having once gone to visit her let me recommend visiting Howarth (or is it Hayworth?) the home of the BRONTE’S!! the moors and the history and the romance of it all!! You will have the most wonderful trip, Joe is a doll and I am happy that you found each other! I can’t wait to share your trip hearing all about it as you have time. AND just think of the Emma Bridgewater delights you will find (OH! you could visit her as well!! fellow artist I’m sure she would love to meet YOU!!) Such a lovely trip! yeah for you, Susan!! you deserve it! you work so hard and you deserve an exciting vacation. 🙂

  17. Kristen says:

How wonderful for me! My health doesn’t allow for as much travel as I’d love, and here I will get to see all the beauty I would love to experience. Thank you so much for allowing me to experience it all through your travels! 🙂

  18. Vickie T. says:

How exciting!! I have never been to England but it’s on my list! My husband and I went to Germany, the Netherlands, and Austria about eight years ago and we can’t wait to get back to Europe! If I were going to England, I would want to visit Highclere Castle where the PBS show, Downton Abbey, is filmed! If you haven’t discovered this show, you must check it out! It’s fabulous! Enjoy your trip and I hope you keep us posted via Twitter and this blog!!

  19. Pam says:

I am so happy for you… and can’t wait to share in your adventures in England.
Loved the story of you and Joe…. kismet, serendipity, fate…call it what you will.. it’s out there and hits you square on when you least expect it.
Happy upcoming birthday and happy trip with your Joe to England.

  22. Rosemary says:

This is just wonderfully unbelievable and just a magical expedition. Two months in England! It is a funny thing. I have just in the last six months gotten a little bug to go to England. I want to read more about it and do research and get the best out of everything that we can and lo and behold, you will be our personal researchers and broaden my horizons and do all the WORK…such work :-}! You will have the time of your lives. I just mentioned this to my husband..how you are to embark on this adventure and he said…”I have always wanted to go on a ocean liner to England.” Watch out world! We are checking into this!
Dream a little dream with me! Thank you for sharing, Susan Branch!

  23. Linda Trokey says:

Oh Susan, I’m so happy for you and Joe. What a wonderful anniversary celebration! A trip to England is on my bucket list and I so look forward to traveling vicariously through your blog and pictures. The pictures from your last trip made me weep and yearn to experience the cottages, the gardens, the little tea rooms and those hidden bookstores with their treasures buried within. I know your trip will be wonderful and again, I look so forward to it that I almost feel like I’m planning the trip myself. Thanks so much for your willingness to share the details. I can’t wait!

  24. Peggy Cooper from Pueblo, CO says:

Hey, you are my kind of woman! Even if you have to put it on the “never never plan” (aka credit cards), it’s worth it. Life is very short, and I agree we gotta do what we gotta do while the body is able and willing. We can always do what we think we should do later. Now is the time to do what we feel we need to do. Sometimes these things just call to us, and we have to go. I’m not going to lie and say I’m not envious, ’cause I most certainly am. I have been entering a contest every day to win a trip to where Downton Abbey is filmed, and another to visit places related to Agatha Christie, so maybe I’ll get over there this year yet. I’ve been to London several times, but have never made it to the places you are going, which is a real dream for a gardener, and lover of all things English country. You two do know how to travel in style. Sigh :o)

  25. Sweet Mormor says:

Ohhhhh how I needed a boost like your story. My mother is critically ill and at the same time my significant other is breaking my heart – again! I think there is no hope – I’ve tried to be kind, nice and caring – I don’t think there is anyone out there that is sweet and old-fashioned – and I just need to tell myself – things will get better – don’t worry – I can do just fine myself…look at your beautiful dream! Maybe I can still have a dream come true someday …I must have faith! What beautiful pictures – follow your heart!

    • sbranch says:

Sending a prayer winging your way. xo

      • carmel says:

Another prayer winging it’s way. So sorry about your mother. Take care of yourself.

        • Victoria Miller says:

There is always promise in the future that things will get better. Keep your faith, and dream your dreams. Best wishes that life gets better for you soon.

        • Debi Hutchinson says:

I’m into sharing prayers and wanted to send you to you as well. Take care.

          • Cathy in Golden, CO says:

Oh my heart aches for you! Imagine your life – really see it – for the way you want it to be. Create it in your mind and it will come! Blessings to you and your mama! xoxo

  27. Oh Susan! I am so happy for you! The land of Beatrix Potter, oh my! I read At Home With Beatrix Potter by Susan Denyer, and enjoyed the story and all the wonderful art work of the land and all the Potter animals, and the homes they lived in! How exciting! What a special birthday and shall I say second honeymoon you both are going to have! You deserve it!
I am so excited! We will be envited to join you on this journey via internet!
    Thank you!
    Tweet! Tweet!

  28. Suzanne Larsen says:

I just wish I was going with you. I love England…Brighton, York (great place for tea at the Earl Grey tearoom), the Chintz china in Stratford-Upon-Avon, Bath, and the Cotswolds…love, love, love the thatched roof houses. The gardens there are to die for.

I will be looking forward to your blog-bytes!

  29. Elizabeth says:

HOW wonderful! I love England; my parents took me for the first time when I was 8, and I’ve been four other times; in 1985 they took me to England, Scotland and Wales to celebrate my 21st birthday. Sadly, our last trip was made in 1991, after my dad was diagnosed with cancer, and I have not been back since. My husband and I want to go together; he has never been. Maybe your “kitty sitter” could take photos and videos of Jack so you will not miss out on his “growing up”. So happy for you, and thank you so much for taking us along!

  30. Christie Ray says:

How positively, absolutely wonderful!!! Yes yes yes…please take us all with you to miss beatrix’s house! I can’t wait!! My dear little Tailor of Gloucester came today…I had looked for him everywhere…and then, there he was…in your vintage finds! I gave my sweet sister in law, who just turned 50, a beatrix potter themed birthday tea party today, just us two…and I used the Peter rabbit napkins and cupcake kit, filled with your carrot cupcake recipe. We poured tea from a jemima tea pot, and ate off my rose chintz dessert plates. My books on Beatrix were stacked on the table as centerpiece…oh you would have just loved it…birdsong cd playing in the background. One of her gifts was an Emma bridgewater mug, the hedgehog, and she loved it! She had never heard of her…oh, but did I ever introduce her;)))
She loved my heart teapot and collection of cups. The setting was all so very
SB inspired;)) she is a long time fan of yours, so i sent her home with some packs of the spring and tea time stickers…The cupcakes were delicious! You are the queen, my dear, and
it is only fitting that you’ll be sailing on a queen’s ship!
What a beautiful love story you and Joe share….isn’t it wonderful when your prince shows up, just when you thought your daddy was the last one made? Can’t wait for the book, dear one…
Hugs and blessings to all there in your little piece of paradise,
    Christie

    • sbranch says:

What a wonderful party Christie! Please wish your sister a happy birthday from me! You made it so nice for her, you two are so lucky to have each other!

      • Christie Ray says:

I will tell her…her sister was married to my husband, and was tragically killed in a car accident 8 years ago. When i married Tim, I eventually came to be a part of his Nancy’s family, as he had been a part of that family for 25 years… So, we call each other sister-in-law. We have grown more and more like sisters every day…God has been so good to give us to each other. We are both such little girls at heart, and there aren’t many who would let someone share that side of them…so we “play tea party” every chance we get. Life is shorter than we think. Go get you some of that England for all of us and we’ll be forever grateful!

  31. Barbara says:

Im sooooo happy for you and Joe!! This would be my dream holiday, to cross the ocean on a ship bound for England. WOW!
Can’t wait for the adventure blog to begin! Have a grand time!
    Barbara

  32. Anna says:

I am so excited for you! And I can’t wait to read about your adventure. Thanks for taking us along. Wonderful. I don’t have to pack or fly.

  33. Linda from Lancaster, Co PA says:

Oh-My-Goodness!!! I can’t believe you are going to take us along! This will be much better than trying to stuff myself (secretly) into your suitcase at the last minute. Please tell Joe “thank you” for agreeing to include us and making it possible. I can’t wait! You (and Joe) are the best!

  34. Jennifer says:

    Hi Susan.
I can’t wait until you publish your and Joe’s love story. I have your Love keepsake book, Autumn cookbook and Book of Days. My favorite pages are the ones with photos of your friends and family. They bring the books to life and show me your perspective. Please include lots of photographs in your new book.

  35. Kathy says:

Omg! So happy for you and so excited to be going along! I’ve not been to England, but dream of going someday. Thank you for including us in the fun!

  36. Susan F. says:

Oh, how wonderful! My husband and I have been married 32 years and my dream trip with him would be to England. I’d most love to see London, a visit the outlying villages and beautiful gardens and cathedrals. I hope to get lots of ideas for my future itinerary while following your adventure:) Have an amazing trip.

  37. Maria says:

I’m so excited!! Can’t wait till “we” depart!!!

  38. Pat says:

    Susan & Joe,
Congratulations on being spontaneous, something I can never seem to be. Have a wonderful trip and know that I will be checking in every day to see where you are taking me!! By the way, I would be a terrific kitten sitter for a few reasons. I love cats, I love your home, and I took in a stray who was preganat and delivered me three lucious little fur balls at 5:02 this morning. I was so excited you’d think I was having another grandchild!! All life is precious and I am so glad you two are enjoying every minute of it!!
    Pat

  39. Karen P. -Wisconsin says:

Okay….one last question and then I’ll leave you alone. I looked through the comments first to see if someone else had asked but I didn’t anything. Where were the pictures taken of those two charming cottages that you have in the blog today? The first one looks a bit like Bibury but not exactly….must be in the Cotswalds someplace, maybe?

    • sbranch says:

The first cottage belongs to our friends who live in Tetbury, and the other one was a country hotel called Gravetye, somewhere around East Grinstead I think. We were out driving around on that one, not positive where it was.

  40. Liza Wolfe says:

My sister took me to England for my 70th birthday. We went in search of family but we did do the Lake District (I too am a Beatrix P otter fan), we walked the Cotswolds and we were guests at the Royal Ascot (oh my, such rules)

  41. Janet says:

OK, it’s official – I am PEA-GREEN with envy! AND looking forward to vicariously enjoying your travels with you – AND to hearing all about the Sue hearts Joe/Joe hearts Sue story.

Also just wondering when it was that you wrote that entry in your journal where you talk about what a doll Joe was? “He’s such a doll! He’s a darling darling doll!…” On and on something like that. It is THE cutest thing ever and something we can all relate to – when that first thunderclap of love hits? Was that on your first real date? Or later maybe? PS – I can wait until you start telling the story here on the blog [I think].

  42. Wendy says:

Well if this is not just the cat’s meow, then I don’t know what is. Love, love England, my mother is from England, I have traveled there a few times, love your pictures and thoughts, your love story with Joe. Will so enjoy hearing from you during your stay. I love English countryside and what treasures/ ideas / inspirations you bring with you when you both return, to your kitties. Now that Downtown Abbey has finished up, this will be a fantastic replacement and so much better. Fred Astaire in the epitome of sophistication. My daughter filled our house with so much of his talents. You and Joe are definitely made for each other. So sweet! Can’t wait to read the next post. Thank you!

  43. Oh Susan, I will gladly join you on the other side of the bridge! and your trip!
You have a lot to answer for though….half way through reading the post I burst into tears and my eyes dribbled right through it, and I’m not sure why! I’m starting to wonder if it’s the ‘unfinished dreams’ though. Some sort of issue with that I’m thinking. Pathetic really! :))) x

Oh, Susan! You ARE taking my dream trip….do you have room for me in your suitcase???? Can’t wait for your book and all the images you will share as a result of this “dream” vacation. I know you will have a lovely time.

    Fondly,
    Nancy

  45. Beth Keser says:

Oh, I can’t wait!! What a wonderful thing, that you are taking us along with you and Joe. Thank you to Joe for making sure you will be as “connected as possible”. I cannot wait for this adventure. Thank you 🙂

  46. Andrea says:

How exciting! Can’t wait. Congratulations, Sue!
Shine on my soon-to-be seafaring pink diamond!

  47. Carla says:

Oh I have always dreamed of going to England, I have been a Royal fan for years! How special that you get to go the year of the Jubilee. My oldest daughter did a study abroad last Summer in London and I lived vicariously through her, now this Summer I get to go again with you!! How lucky am I! Thank you so much for sharing your trip with all of us!

  48. Susan A. says:

It will be a heaven sent time for u both and I am glad to be on the journey with you. May is just a twinkle around the corner! Check out the Olympic stuff for us too in photos!

  49. Laurie says:

Since my husband has been overcome with Alz. D. I am doing lots of looking backwards and SO, SO, SO thankful that he was a bit impetuous and we really enjoyed “spur of the moment” and somewhat “unplanned” trips. I’m the one that said, “Let’s check the travel guide. and can we afford it?” But Gary was the one that said, “Wonder what’s up that canyon…maybe a better view. If we camp out part of the time we can afford a longer trip.” Always the fun one, he filled my memory banks up. I’ve never regretted what we’ve been able to see and do together for 36 years. My dreams are not forward-looking but nonetheless, full of quiet vistas, and laughing children. Thanks for sharing your memory-making with us.

  50. Ann Cary says:

Oh my, oh my, oh my….. did I really just get a lump in my throat and a little tear in my eye listening to your dear love story? Yes, I think I did. Thank you for that unexpected love filled, beautiful England, romantic ship travel mini-moment ♥ AND to top it off, just as I was thinking ‘please write everything down so we can follow in your footsteps someday’, you said you were going to publish your journal from the trip. Did I read that correctly???
Your post today was like unwrapping a surprise gift that I didn’t even know I wanted. Thank you.

  51. Jennie says:

I cried (good tears) reading this post!
I am going through a very difficult divorce after 13 years of marriage and two wonderful kids- you actually made me laugh mentioning you had sworn off men- are you kidding? I was literally saying that to myself just yesterday. I said those same things- I must just be meant to be alone, and have actually started to be quite taken with the idea. Wish I had my cute little house in the woods, but I have a big old house I may someday loose and haven’t earned a paycheck since 1998, so I don’t have those wonderful things in place to fall back on- yet!
But I do have dreams- they involve a cottage in the countryside (preferably in England) and hours hunched over a desk in creative-inspiration land with my kitties and perhaps a gregarious next-door neighbor who comes by for tea every now and then.
    Female neighbor, of course. 😉
Have to finish raising these kiddos first though- but with only 8 years left, it will tumble by.

I am thrilled for you and Joe heading back to England. I agree with him on taking advantage of things going well when you can! Seize the day (or the ocean in this case!)
I have never been, but long to see it at least once! My Papa, who is in his 70’s traipses around Europe every year, but England is always his favorite. He haunts the countryside there. 🙂

    • sbranch says:

I’ll probably pass him! Just wanted to say that nothing ever stays the same Jennie, be good to yourself!

      • Cathy in Golden, CO says:

I was divorced after 13 years of marriage and 3 kids. Never wanted to meet a man or go through “that” again. I ended up with a love story very much like Susan’s and my 3 children love HIM! Married almost 30 years now with experiences I would never have had if I didn’t go through the pain – you WILL HAVE A WONDERFUL LIFE. I promise.

  52. Nancy says:

Just started hooking up with your website and I’m loving it! Every time I read it, a bad mood turns into a good one, a dry spell turns into creativity, and I feel really happy and ready to face the world! Thanks for sharing your little piece of paradise. I’m truly hooked!

  53. Marsha says:

    Dear Susan,
When I read that this morning, I, too felt like jumping up and down! How wonderful that you and Joe are such sweethearts! Love comes and finds us, doesn’t it?
I traveled with my college roommate last summer around the southwest, after having lost my husband to a heart attack the autumn before. Losing him convinced me, first of all, that while we are here we shouldn’t waste any chances to go do things and make memories together. He and I were scheduled to go on a trip to the Grand Canyon when he passed away, very suddenly.
Even though he didn’t get to see the Grand Canyon, I will hold that trip in my heart as one we might have made together, and cherish the memories of making the plans to do it.
    Still making memories, Marsha

  54. Janice R says:

    Hi Susan,

This is awesome! You will have the time of your lives. I wanted to tell you that we are HOOKED on watching Phoebe the hummingbird and also the Eagles in Iowa. Looks like action is starting at the eagle nest!!! Thank you so much for posting that. I will be watching for your trip updates…..
    Jan

  55. Harmony-Colleen says:

Knowing someone who can share their adventures (and discoveries, dreams, loves, knowledges and life-details) in such a fashion that it makes those they share it with feel as though they, too, have experienced the journey, is such an amazing gift. You have this beautiful ability (in spades!), as so many have said before me.

It will be wonderful to read your tales of England 2012, the ship and the crossing, the Lake District, Beatrix Potter’s Hilltop Farm & Wordsworth’s Dove Cottage…Consider the Bronte’s moorish Haworth (as previously suggested by another literary landscape lover), Jane Austen’s Chawton home, Shakespeare’s Stratford upon Avon, the Cotswolds, Rupert Brooke’s Orchard Tea Room in Grantchester, Cambridgeshire, DuMaurier’s haunting Cornwall…I could go on and on but, your list is probably already massive. (We won’t even mention those summer Olympics!) What a glorious time you will have.

Thanks Susan for having the heart and generosity of spirit (as well as creative talent!) to share all the beauty & happiness & adventures you experience. Reading your blog, like reading your books, is always so calming and joyful.
A real light in this world. Have a brilliant time in England.

  56. Nancy Carreiro says:

congratulations! looking forward to the travelog. thank you for your blog. N.

  57. Cindy Maulin says:

hi susan…soooooo very happy for you and joe!! i teared up while reading your post about England and the QM trip…. it’s a rare find to see people who really understand and appreciate how special and short life is and how much better it is to be able to share it with the love of your life…. i remember when i got my husband his cell phone (which he adamantly did not want)…i programed my contact as “love of my life” instead of Cindy so each time i call or text him.. “loml” shows up!!!…it’s the little things!! But this is really BIG!!!! I know it will be a trip of a lifetime…and how sweet of you to think to include us…you are the BEST!!! Bon Voyage ( in May )….love, cindy

  60. Cynthia Nolan, Cheraw, SC says:

I love Beatrix Potter and can hardly wait for our trip. Thanks for taking us along for the ride.

  61. Barbara from SoCal says:

Oh my gosh! I was talking to my sister last week and said “I wish Susan Branch would tell the story of how she and her husband met. Maybe I can request it. No, she’d never do it.” And you did! And I didn’t even have to ask! I’m so glad you did. When I started reading, I thought “NO WAY”. Thank you so much for sharing and I am thrilled you get to go back to England. I can only dream ………………….
Start packing. It will be here before you know it! 🙂

  62. Tammy says:

I was told in July that I would be laid off in 2012 so we cancelled a trip we had planned to go to Boston in autumn. I am now living vicariously through you! England in the spring…lucky girl!

    Tammy

  63. Lesley Baker says:

    Lesley.

  64. Rettabug says:

♫♫ Lucky-Dog, Lucky-Dog! ♫♫ I’m thrilled for you Susan & that hunk of a husband you have there! I’m also thrilled that we’ll get to go along, vicariously, because it is one country we’ve never traveled. Italy, Ireland, Scotland, Greece, Turkey, yes…England…not YET!! I look forward to reading your delicious accounts of every aspect of the trip.
We’re heading to Maui in Sept. for our 2nd honeymoon & to celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary, which was also this past Feb., like you guys. It nice to plan & think about any vacation trip, I think. Half the fun is the a-n-t-i-c-i-p-a-t-i-o-n. (ala Carly Simon)

    Hugs,
    Rett

  65. Sherri Fabbri says:

    Dear Susan,
Please tell me where that cottage is that you’re in the doorway of at the beginning of your blog today! It looks just like the cottage that Kate Winslet’s character stayed in – in the movie- “The Holiday”! Is it a B&B? I have dreamed about it ever since I first saw that movie! I wish I could go there!! Have a wonderful trip! I ‘m looking forward to following it! -Sherri Fabbri

    • sbranch says:

It’s the guest house on the property of friends! Just your average, run of the mill, ridiculously cute 4 hundred year old cottage!

      • Joan Lesmeister says:

When I saw that picture, my heart stopped………..that cottage is, well, not enough adjectives in my storehouse, and you’re pretty cute too!!!! I think Victorians are so wonderful, then I see a cottage, so fabulously wonderful. Why is that? Domiciles in previous lives? Although, not sure I really believe that!!xoxoxo

  66. Victoria Miller says:

What a delightful place, this blog! A love story with a very happy ongoing (even better than happy ending), and a dream come true trip to England! The story of you and Joe meeting and “the beginning” is so sweet, it could be it’s own film. And two months in England! How wonderful! “Oh to be in England, now that April’s there…” April, May, close enough. Last week a friend and I roamed all over the South Coast Botanic Garden for hours one day, and that evening I watched Mrs. Potter (because we saw bunnies at the garden). A lovely film, even with the good cry. This lovely blog, lovely stories, photos, recipes…and then all the lovely little bits shared by the girlfriends. I love this space! And you give us so much to look forward to. The Adventures of Susan and Joe; the Adventures of Jack and Girl Kitty; Travels with Sue and Joe… It just gets better and better! An inspiration to us all. Thanks so much!

  67. Rita from MN says:

Sounds wonderful! If I can’t do it myself the next best thing is “doing” it via you and Joe. I knew I liked Joe. A Fred Astaire fan? Unheard of now-a-days. I love Fred! And five years younger than you? My guy is nine years younger than me. And even though he doesn’t know who Fred is or cook he makes me as happy as your Joe makes you. Can’t wait for the travel book and will wait for the breakfast book so that you can enjoy your travels.

  68. Julie Cavrich says:

How wonderful! I am so happy for you and Joe. What a wonderful guy you have. I will be with you all the way. I have to tell you that my Dad looked a lot like Fred Astaire, and had that same sleek style. You don’t see that anymore. The kitties will be fine. Have a great time! Kisses to the kitties.

  69. Charlene says:

This is wonderful news – I’m so happy for you! I lived in England for a year, the man I was dating took me to see Beatrix Potter’s home, that evening during dinner, he proposed to me! I’ve been happily married to a romantic Brit for almost 15 years. I’m looking forward to reading about your adventures!

  70. What a wonderful love story, and a beautiful way to celebrate a special birthday! My husband and I sailed on the Queen Mary 2 in her maiden year in 20004 for our 30th wedding anniversary. We went on a 14 day trip to New England and Canada…stopped at Newport. RI, Portland, ME, Halifax, Nova Scotia, Cape Breton, Cornerbrook, Newfoundland, and then down the St. Lawrence River to beautiful Quebec and then the return trip back to NYC. It is a gorgeous ship! I loved the library, the afternoon tea in the ballroom and the wonderful wool tartan plaid coverlets we used to snuggle under on the wood deck chairs.
I have always wanted to visit England so I look forward to all you will blog about while there, Susan. Wishing you and Joe a most magical and enjoyable trip!

    Hugs,
    Pat

  71. Paula A. says:

Oh Susan I’m so excited for you and Joe! I can’t wait to see England through your eyes. My husband and I are going to tour the UK in Sept. for our 35th anniversary. We haven’t completely decided just what to see yet. We are going on our own and not with a tour group. We didn’t want to be rushed. So maybe we can get some ideas from you and Joe. Enjoy your love for one another and make special memories together.

  72. Danielle says:

Susan, I’m so happy for you! What an exciting trip you are about to embark on. And I’m even happier that you are taking us with you. I can’t wait to see what high tea aboard the sea looks like, and could you really show us a real English garden? My heart is racing. You have no idea how much I would love to visit England – and now I can, though you. Thank you~

My eyes were filled with tears as I read your story. It was fate that you and Joe found eachother. Somewhere over the rainbow maybe my dreams will come true too : )

  73. Liz says:

Oooo, I’m so excited! I’ve always wanted to go to England! Can’t wait!

  74. Samantha says:

That is so fantastic and romantic and wonderful!! 🙂 I hope that you two have a blast, and I very much look forward to being able to “journey with you” as you go. What fun to be had for all!

  75. Tam says:

awwwww……. Can’t wait for the book!
I am so envious. I would love to go to the UK. My very favorite author, Rosamunde Pilcher, is from Scotland and her novels take place mostly in England and Scotland.

  76. Nicole Brake says:

You will never regret taking a vacation.

  77. Denise says:

    Dear Susan,
I am soooo happy for you! I can’t believe you would include us all in your travels! Can’t wait to see where we go! Thank you-Thank you – so happy for you, Joe & us! 🙂
    Denise
    Happy Birthday!

  78. Bee Stevens says:

OK, two more copies of your travel book sold – one for me and one for
my good friend. What a delight – so nice of you to do so much work to
share your trip with all of us. I am so excited for you and will follow
and check your blog daily. Love your “love story” too.

  79. Pat C. says:

    Susan,
What a joy to read about how you and Joe met! I love hearing how couples met. And you seem so perfect for each other. I’m glad you both are heading for England again. I love it there, too, especially getting out into the country. Keep us all posted on those beautiful treats you’ll be eating, trifle, scones, elegant cups of tea with sugar. Just think of us as suitcase stowaways!
    Have a wonderful time!
    Pat

  80. Bon Voyage ! And Happy Birthday! 🙂 Sounds like a wonderful romantic holiday! These are the moments in life to cherish . Enjoy and we’ll be waiting in anticipation to see England through your eyes!

  81. Lori says:

Hooray for you! Books can wait, dreams, NO! While you are in the Lake District, check out the Ambleside area. There was a 19th century teacher by the name of Charlotte Mason. She ran a college for teachers in that area. She was a woman who revolutionized teaching/learning! Her philosophies are used today by many, including our homeschooling family. There are Charlotte Mason schools all around the U.S. now. A remarkable woman…just like you!

    Blessings,
    Lori in TX

  82. Jan says:

    Susan,
Done with my test today and on with living my everyday life – glad that’s over with until I do it again in 2014. (If I don’t retire before then. ) Your trip sounds WONDERFUL!!! Sounds fantastic that you are taking us along!!! Can’t wait!!Would love to see the Beatrix Potter pictures!! You are sooo lucky!

  83. Isabel says:

You must be psychic, Susan Branch. I was having a down day and when I read the title of your blog, you gotta have a dream, it brought tears to my eyes. Like other “girlfriends,” I have ALWAYS wanted to go to England and love all things Beatrix Potter, but thought it might never happen. Until I read your blog. I am so glad to be able to see everything I love through yours and Joe’s eyes until I maybe get a chance to make my dream come true. You make me think it CAN happen. You and Joe, a beautiful love story. You both are very lucky. Can’t wait to see your travel journal. Have a wonderful journey.

  84. Chris H says:

I’ll be following your every word, photo and thought on this journey to England. You see my husband and I were to be in England this May (maybe we would have met up somewhere!!!!) we’d even set the dates and bought and paid for the tickets from Australia and now we find we can’t go. We’d planned on going to the Devon coast, the Cotswolds and the Lake District (for Beatrix Potter’s home and farms) then over to Nthn Ireland to see where Tim was born. I’m SO disappointed as you can imagine. So, for all of us who can’t visit this beautiful place…….have a wonderful time and send as many posts and photos on your blog as you can possibly manage. It’ll be fun to see some quaint, charming and breathtaking places through your eyes. We won’t get sick of them, we promise!

    • sbranch says:

Oh I’m sorry Chris . . . things happen, we won’t believe it until we are really out the door!

  85. Joanie B from San Diego says:

Soso glad that you are going, life is uncertain, so we all have to take our joy whenever and wherever. You are inspiring me to plan a little trip for me and my husband, not as far but just as important, as some of the other writers have mentioned. Have fun in the anticipation! It’s part of the journey. What new stories and experiences are “over the bridge!” Can’t wait to hear and thanks for sharing it with us.

  86. Dina Steele says:

If your housesitter falls through, I’m your gal! I love kitties ( I have two as well) and know all kinds of fun amusements for them. I would also take tender loving care of your home and garden and enjoy some time on your island. I would love to take your morning walk, take in all the island sights and places you have shared, and enjoy being “Susan” for a while. Just an idea – I look forward to vicariously going abroad with you on this wonderful beautiful journey. Thanks for including us.

    • sbranch says:

It never occurred to me to find a kitty sitter here! If ever I need one, I know where to look!

  87. Melissa R (UT) says:

OK, I am totallly smitten and waiting to hear the love story of Susan & Joe! He is as adorable as you always describe! Can’t wait to vicariously join you- when I first saw the picture of the cottage I knew where you were off to! My husband and I are recent fans(fanatics) of Downton Abbey for whatever that’s worth! Have soooo much fun-we all can’t wait! xoxoxo Love Melissa

  88. Ahhhhhh!!!! Sooo excited for you – and cannot wait to live this trip vicariously! England!!!!!

  89. Jamie says:

Oh.my.goodness. Can I tell you how utterly jealous I am? In 1967 and 1968, my family was lucky enough to live in the Lake District. I am slowly saving my pennies for a return trip some day. Cockermouth was home, actually 17 Brigham Road…and so many wonderful memories were made there. I’m dreaming of the day I can visit again, and I’m hopeful that I will be able to locate an old friend or two.
Have a wonderful enough time that all of us feel we’ve been there with you!!
Please share all of the details … we’ll be waiting!!

  90. Tiina says:

Susan you’ll just love Beatrix Potter’s house. My husband and I went in 2001 and it was so cute and quaint. The Lake District is amazing. It’s no Yosemite ( where I’m near) but it’s still nice. I can’t wait to see all the amazing pictures. What a fun journey you and Joe will have. Looking forward to your adventure.

  91. Joann says:

Oh Susan….this all sounds so wonderful….as you know, I have a similar meeting experience of finding the love of my life…..it is a wonderful story and my motto is: Dreams Do Come True!!

I am delighted that you’re going…..I went to a funeral today….my son-in -law’s father passed away of cancer and he was only 64. It really makes you think. Go….have fun….you deserve it!!

    xoxo
    Joann

    • sbranch says:

That’s the kind of thing that gave us the final decision Joann, to make hay while the sun is shining, for however long that is.

  92. Brenda from Saskatchewan, Canada says:

I’m excited for you, Susan, and excited for all of us who will live vicariously through your blog. I blog my travels so that my kids and my few fans (mostly quilt guild friends) can keep up with what we are doing. As well, it’s an excellent way for me to process our experiences. Thank you for being willing to share your experiences with us.

OT, I was at a bookstore in the city on the weekend and bought both your “Grandma, Tell Me a Story” and your cookbook for daughters. I can’t wait to fill both of them.

  93. Diane from Washington state says:

I am so moved by your blog that I actually had tears in my eyes! I really did! Your journey to find true love with Joe, and all that you suffered to get to that place of finding him and then to hear of your dreams….to hear of your feelings and thoughts about taking this dream vacation of a lifetime…..! I just want to say that I am so thrilled for you and Joe! It sounds like the perfect dream come true! I cant tell you how much fun it is to go along with you on your travels! I just love the pictures and all that you share and it feels like I am right there and I get to experience the joy of a trip or vacation too! You deserve to have fun and be with the one you love. And you are so right….NOW is the perfect time…..you just cant tell what next year holds…so live it up! Jack and GK will be fine at home and it will do you good to get a break. I cant wait until “we” all get to go!

  94. Charlene H. from So. Calif. (S.F.Valley) says:

Hello Susan! I. AM. SO. HAPPY. FOR. YOU! (I see the teens using the period/dot for extra emphasis). (Big smile on my face as I type this…)

  95. Debi Hutchinson says:

OMG, girlfriend! You are SOOOOOOO lucky! I can’t wait to live vicariously through you during your trip to England. And the thought of a new book after your journey just excites me to no end! You have such a way with your writing that you bring a place alive. Thank you for giving me so much to look forward to. I can’t wait for the fun to begin!

  96. judi says:

What delightful news! Your timing is perfect. I needed something to look forward to as all my “best crafting friends” are returning north and it will be a bit glum here for a bit. A well deserved present for you, Susan, for your “special” birthday and your handsome prince. Wish I lived closer….would love to “love up” your sweet kitties whilst you’re gone. Happy trails ahead:)

  97. grandma glenda says:

OHHHHHHHH!! how wonderful. Fully deserved. Count me in; i’ll be waiting for all the pics and stories. relax and enjoy every moment!!

  98. Kirsten Anne Wichert of So. Calif. says:

Yea!!!! I’m so excited that you will finally give us your “real life love story”! I’ve actually seen Joe in person at one of your book signings. Actually, he was downstairs in the book store looking around. We didn’t want to bother him. He was so cute back when you met him and he still is! How excited are you to be going back to England!!!! I can’t wait to see the Beatrix Potter home. You are so great to share with us. March 25th is “Fancy Rainbow Day” so named by my granddaughter, Elizabeth Anne, who died of Pancreatic cancer 5 yrs. ago. This is the day to wish on rainbows and keep hope alive. Elizabeth didn’t waste any of her short 6 years she spent with us. Her close friends and family still celebrate in her name every year. So I sincerely wish you a most happy Fancy Rainbow Day!

    • sbranch says:

Thank you so much, I wish you a wonderful Fancy Rainbow Day too … in Memory of Elizabeth Anne and you.

  99. Marie says:

Oh you will have such a wonderful time!! I know that dreams can come true because I day dreamt all through my childhood of living in Enid Blyton land and here I am doing just that! You must visit Chester! It’s a beautiful city, not so big that you would get lost in it, small enough to have plenty of personality. Oh it would be a joy to serve you tea here in my little terraced house on the edge of Chester. Not a possibility I know, but like you said, you got to have a dream in order to have a dream come true. I loved reading about how you and Joe got together. It is so sweet. Happy journies and stay safe. xxoo
PS – Really looking forward to your holiday journal.

  100. Debbie in Vermont says:

Oh, how wonderful and exciting! This sounds soooooo romantic and blissful. I’m already looking forward to your blog and traveling with you. All the girlfriends are happy for you both!
