Welcome to Happy Land . . . with Musica . . .
You might be wondering where I’ve been . . . I’ve been right here . . .
And I just finished page sixty of our book, the English Diary! Only two more gazillion pages to go, but we are getting there!
C R E A T I V I T Y
I’ve been focused like a laser, not letting myself get led down the primrose path; getting up really early, making tea, going through the house, flipping on lights, throwing the ball for Jack, and watching the sun come up, sometimes turning on a little French music to get me going — smoothing out a clean piece of watercolor paper, and in my imagination and through my paintbrush, I stand at the ship’s rail looking out over the Atlantic Ocean, or wander through English cottage gardens. Before I start work I draw my Angel Card and find out which wonderful word should guide my day. I loved this morning’s word!
I try to put my very best on every page . . . I want it to be something I can be proud of and something you will love. It is a little strange when you think that at one time these pages did not exist and now, here it is, slowly but surely, taking shape and becoming a book. Making something out of nothing. Kind of like cooking!
I thought you might like to see a little bit of it, although I hope you don’t mind if I don’t show it too close! I want it to be a surprise! But I also think you deserve to see that it’s really happening! You are so patient!
I’m handwriting it, like I’ve done with all my books, which is the thing that takes the longest. I actually kept the diary every day while we were in England, but I scribbled it quickly (and sloppily) so I could get it all down and not forget the details — I took my writing with me everywhere, always had it in the car, took it to pubs, even brought it along when we went on walks so I could write or sketch if we stopped for tea, and in the different gardens we visited; I painted too, especially in places like Beatrix Potter’s house where we weren’t allowed to take photos, so I would have it when we got home. Now I’m copying the words over neatly, in my “good handwriting,” painting borders and illustrating the pages, adding souvenirs and photographs. It’s pretty darn cute if I do say so myself.
My studio is filled with inspiration; especially books. I believe™ in the concept of “Book Osmosis,” where, if you surround yourself with the creativity and brilliantness of others, it will rub off on you; plus, I want to be sure I’m giving the correct name for the flowers we saw, the birds and the trees . . . And of course, wherever I go, so goeth Beatrix Potter. ♥ Because love is as love does. ♥
I’m having fun choosing and laying out the photos . . . more opportunity for the imagination to stay in England!
Lately the book is all I think about; I love it so much, I’m probably getting a little compulsive about it (this is where Joe would look up and say, “probably?”); I think about it all the time; that age-old question, “what do they want to know about, what can I give them that will bring them there?” I wake up every morning, with my foot wiggling, by brain clicking; sometimes, it’s the “AHA” ideas of things to add to the book that gets me bounding down the stairs. My life, in all other respects, has narrowed to the essentials. Eat (we still have lobster on beach every so often; this is not a forced-labor camp), sleep, walk, knit, read, and create. Notice what came first? (Not necessarily in that order, I should add!) I watched Miss Potter again last night, and knit. See, not all bad!
My “true treasures of home” . . . here the children are this morning, a rare moment in peaceable kingdom; and I did not order them into this position (like I even could) — But, this togetherness won’t last; already you notice Girl’s face is saying, “Take him back, I’m begging you; look at him . . . he’s looking at me again. Make him stop.” And he is repeating the same question over and over at a thousand words a minute, “What’d she say, what’d she say, what’s she saying? Tell me what she said!”
And while I’m consumed with my work, and Jack is consumed with Girl, the world continues to turn; fall arrived yesterday, and was crowned with a sunset rainbow last night, right outside our front door! I think I have never seen brighter colors on a rainbow! It’s supposed to be cool and dry for at least a week; I’m wearing a sweater right now; we had to put a down comforter on the bed last night (windows open, crisp ocean breeze coming in, heaven)! Joe and I just planned a leaf-peeping, four-day getaway for the end of this month for a surprise for us, since we have been working so hard. Meanderment (meandering wonderment) in the van . . . no plan! Back roads! New England!!! Leaves! Ponds! Oh my. Dreamy.
And, on the other side of the house from the rainbow, this was the sky . . . everything so beautiful on Martha’s Vineyard in the fall, everything except our kitchen.
Which I won’t show you, it is too much of a nightmare. Having an old house with lots of nooks and crannies, wainscoting, chair rails, window trim, scalloped aprons hanging from the ceiling and the like, are, 99.9% of the time, so wonderful I have no words. That other .1% — is when you have to paint them. Joe is doing a great job. He has the patience of Job.
It will never be done. But I don’t care . . . he does that; I paint; we plan our getaway; Girl plots revenge; Jack keeps us laughing; everyone is staying out of trouble. Life is good in the Heart of the Home. Hope it’s the same for you! ♥ Have a wonderful day!
P.S. Leave me a little message (be sure to mention where you’re from! Inquiring minds want to know, right Girlfriends?) and you’ll be entered into a contest for a FREE, signed copy of my (out of print) AUTUMN BOOK! You may already have it, but wouldn’t it make a wonderful gift for someone you love? ‘Cause it’s that time of year! ♥
The Autumn book is one of my favorites! A wonderful gift for anyone and everyone. Just got done making some rich, luscious chicken stock (pg 56 girls). Even though I’m in Florida, I still love making soup in the fall and winter months and this stock is a wonderful addition to my soupy creations. Hope your kitchen is done soon Susan! Love you, Jacqui
Thank you for the Chicken Stock review Jacqui!!
Down here in the Carolinas, we’ve had crisp mornings for a couple of days–but summer isn’t through with us yet! Sooooooooooo looking forward to October when the days stay crisp and crackling, not just the early mornings. And looking forward to your English diary–do you remember “The Country Diary of an English Lady?” (I think that was the title–I loaned mine to someone who was so entranced, she never returned it.)
I do have your Autumn book…and love it! But, a signed copy would be lovely! I promise to hand one of them down to one of my daughters!
–Dorothy from Paso Robles (You met me and my daughters and grandchildren at your store open house. It was such a honor.)
I think I remember, a big beautiful family, we took our picture together, is that you?
If I don’t win I will be ordering one! Love your blog. Read it almost every day. I’m here in Bakersfield CA and it’s going to be 93 today. I envy your fall weather more than you know!!!
Autumn in New England is unbeatable. We live on the North Shore (of MA) and this is the prettiest time of the year. I have most of your books, but not Autumn. How nice it would be to round out my collection! Happy Fall…
Redford, MI. The cider mills all opened last weekend, which is the first true sign of fall. You just can’t beat fresh apples, cider and donuts (hot out of the fryer, of course). I’m awaiting the English Diary with baited breath. Thanks so much for sharing it with all of us.
Susan,
So happy to read your words and know that all is well in your heart and home. I too, have rituals when I am writing and to keep the creative energy flowing. (I suppose all artists do. Perhaps I will give Hemingway’s and Fitzgerald’s methods a try and take a holiday in Paris, party all night long, sleep in most of the day… Hmm, minus Paris it sounds like my cats’ lives!) It is a beautiful day in the Garden State. Scout (my Rat Terrier aka the sturdy lil farm dog) have already been on our 2 mile walk around the property to the water. We saw a fox yesterday and a blue heron and eagles today. The eagles nest here! I am so excited about your new book and looking forward to it being published. Thank you for taking time out of your day to keep us posted.
Your Friend,
Deborah (NJ)
Hello, Susan and Joe…Girl & Jack…
Aurora, Colorado is not quite “autumnish” yet, but there is a wee bit of something different in the air that tells me FALL is right around the corner….
As always, I so enjoyed your blog today…thank you for sharing your writing journey.
I’m looking forward to seeing your new kitchen and reading your new book. : )
Have a great week…I would love to win your AUTUMN BOOK!
I just discovered your blog a few weeks ago. Love, Love, Love it. You are one talented lady. I read your blog and get a big smile on my face. Thanks for giving all the Girlfriends a chance to win a free, signed copy of AUTUMN BOOK. How excited I would be if I won. Have a wonderful week!
Autumn also arrived in Connecticut yesterday. When it was so humid again on Saturday morning, I thought we would just melt. Then voila, yesterday was a grand day with the most beautiful blue sky and puffy white clouds. I join the crowd of those eagerly waiting for your English diary. Hope you have many productive days in the coming weeks (along with a well-deserved road trip).
I’m back!! I feel like the Susan Branch stalker. Really, I am not a stalker, just a perimenopausing momma. I really have to say I love your blog so much it is like a book in and of itself. I’m still trying to win something for my sister. Yes, I am sure she has your book– but NOT a signed book. She is printing out my comments from my attempts to win everything you so graciously offer. She WILL probably deny she knows me about now. If she would only start to paint! …sigh…
I loved the previous Beatrix Potter quote about living in a cottage. My husband and I are buying a piece of land on Lake Erie to build our bungalow for two (or 5 when all the kids are around). . I would love to frame that. It is beautiful! Thank you!
Ann
P.S. Now that you read this get back to finishing the book girlfriend. I can’t wait!
OK :-)!
Hi Susan! The diary looks wonderful, it will be nice to see it completed. Even though we get a bad rap sometimes, AUTUMN in New Jersey can be pretty spectacular! Warm sunny days with a bit of crisp to the evenings we are lucky to have orchards for apple picking, mountains and beach close by for Fall weekends . Lots of good food and friends to share the time, it is my favorite season and this year I will be celebrating my 25th anniversary too! What’s not to like about all that?! Have a wonderful Autumn yourself!
I hail from historical Jacksonville in southern Oregon where we’re finally experiencing some wonderful Autumn-ish weather.
Thank you for the peek at your work-in-process……it’s wonderful to see (and anticpate~!).
XOXO
~Carolyne
hello from the neighboring county, Josephine county. isn’t it grand that the heat is gone and we can get a break from that heat????
Beautiful fall-like day here in the Greenbrier Valley of WV too, Susan, if you’ve never visited WV, autumn is a wonderful time to do it! Stay in the Greenbrier Hotel, ride the steam engine drawn train at Cass, take a walking tour of quaint Lewisburg-I know you’d love it! This is the time of year I fell in love with the Valley, and my husband of 31 years too! So of course i love this time of year here. But I’ve always loves autumn, and I don’t have your Autumn Book-yet! 😉
Hi Susan,
Fall has arrived here at my home too….and as I type, I am taking a cleaning break. Today I began my “Fall-Spring Cleaning” and it is taking me a lot longer than I expected…lol. I am in Central PA….and loving this weather with all my windows open, the AC off and relishing every delicious moment of this humid free weather. Your new book about your trip England sounds so wonderful..I can’t wait to read it. Thank you for your cheery disposition and outlook. Your blog was just the break I needed today:) Erica:)
My very favorite time of year! Autumn! It means that winter is coming. The rain will be falling and the snow will be flaking! I LOVE it!
I can’t stand how much I love your blog! I open it each time it comes and I sit with my special cup of water…(I don’t like tea. I’m so sorry! But I do love ice water. Strange, I know.) anyway, I sit at my computer as the squirrels munch on the corn hanging from a “Squirrel Bungy”, quite cute I have to say, and the blue jays steal the corn, and the butterflies flutter around the butterfly bush that is still blooming far after it should be, and I read with a smile on my face. You are living my other life!! Thank you so much for sharing. I can’t wait for your book to be finished and out. It’s so beautiful right now!
Enough for now. Thank you again for your free spirit and open heart.
Melissa, Nevada City, California. Between Sacramento and Tahoe!
I’m from Duluth, Minnesota, Susan, where we’ve had our hottest summer on record, but autumn blew through the windows last night! Lake Superior (we can see it from our bedroom window, even when we’re in bed) is looking deep dark blue now, and the leaves are beginning to turn. Blessings…
Love Duluth and the harbor. Is Blackwoods still on London Road?
M-I-C-H-I-G-A-N…Lovely with warm days and Cool nights 😉
I’m glad to hear your working on the diary but missed you on your blog!! I don’t have the autumn book and would enjoy it immensely! My b-day is coming up, smile!
Love the sneak previews of the diary!! Oh and I’m in So. Cal where it’s to be 90 degrees.
You really inspired me with all your hard work today. I’m actually doing Joe’s kind of work. Painting trim in a 100 year old house with oil based paint. I am sooo slow with this job but actually enjoying it. The weather is beautiful. Perfect painting weather. Wouldn’t that Autumn book look great in my freshly painted living room???
Ohhhhhhhhhh, can’t wait for the wonderful Diary. Every single one of your books and posts are absolutely amazing! Love every dot, tittle, brush stroke, photo, musica, precious thought, idea–just can’t get enough of Susan Branch! Your blog is the most wonderful connection. I feel like I live right next door (or pretty darn close). Do I hear the crunchy leaves? Acorns hitting the ground? Smell burning leaves? My imagination rules . . . 🙂
i’ll send you some squirrels to come and stash those acorns for you.
Napa, California. I can’t wait for your new book!
I agree that Martha’s Vineyard is HAPPY LAND. I visited your beautiful island at the end of July. I wanted to stay forever; however I had to return to Lebanon, VA. The New England states take my breath away. Can’t wait to reserve a copy of the diary.
Temporarily living in the tiny community of McCammon, Idaho. Our house was destroyed by a wildfire in Pocatello, Idaho in June. We’re hoping for autumn to arrive since so much of Idaho, Wyoming, and the West is having such a horrible fire season. I love your photos of Martha’s Vineyard. It takes me away to a lovely place. Thank you.
So sorry to hear about your home, Tina—I’ll add you to my prayer list (under the heading “Rain, please!”). We’ve had a horrible, hot, dry summer here north of Chicago, too, but at least we don’t get wildfires—just burned-out lawns and thirsty plants all over. There are still some cornfields near where we live and it’s sad to see how small and shriveled they are. Autumn rains can’t come soon enough!
thank you, Libby. We can always use prayers.
Hello,Tina – and so sorry to hear about you losing your home. I can’t imagine how awful that must be. A former student of mine lives in Pocatello, although she describes her home as “up in the mountains” so I don’t know if that’s near you or not. Good luck with everything and keep on keepin’ on – things will get better. Take care! :>)
Greetings from winnie*world! (located in Kansas) Susan, today’s post brightened by day. The picture of your kitties is so sweet — don’t you wish they could love each other as much as you love them. Out crabby little Grace just tolerates the other kitties and I used to constantly have to tell Duncan to stop looking at her! (Sadly Duncan is now in Heaven waiting for us to join him.) Your rainbow photo turned out so clear and bright! Rarely do photos of rainbows show their true beauty. Today my Steve went to the Kansas State Fair with his 85 year old dad. We are having a beautiful day (when I walked with the puppy – Mercy Beth – this morning it was below 60 degrees!). Summer is having a hard time letting go, but yesterday after church it was so pleasant outside, I brought out the cushion for the chaise lounge and read a Gladys Taber book with Mercy Beth laying at my feet. It just doesn’t get any better than that!

Hi, Susan, from San Juan Capistrano, CA!
I’m so jealous you are getting a taste of fall now! It has been hot and humid here and no end in sight. I wanna wear a sweater and throw a quilt on our bed, too…sob, sob. Lucky you heading to New England soon! We usually go there to see family along the coast of New Hampshire. I love walking around Exeter and Portsmouth in NH and Newburyport, MA is nearby. Then we head to Maine for a couple of days…love, love, love Camden and staying at The Inn at Sunrise Point. (Each room is named after a New England author or artist.) So, enjoy for me this year as we are heading to Ohio for my 45th (yikes) high school class reunion next month.
Hugs,
Jerri
I love your autumn book and cherish my own copy. I did find one to give my sister-in-law, also an author, a few autumns ago when we visited her in North Hampton, NH. It’s a wonderful hostess gift!
Here from Meridian, Idaho. It’s just starting to cool off but not enough for me. I can’t wait to start wearing sweaters and put my down comforter on my bed. Strangely the leaves on some of the trees are turning yellow and dropping off, like they can’t wait for the cooler weather either. I think I have just about every book you have written, but would be a great present. Than you so much! Love the kitties!
This is one of your most wonderful posts yet! Seeing pieces of your creative process….and of course, the Cats!! I cannot wait til the book comes out. (And I don’t have a copy of the Autumn book….yet.)
I’m out here in Washington State living vicariously through your verbal meanderings! I so love every entry you post. Giggle when I read any of the “feline feud” you have at your home. I too have 2 cats that have the same cattitudes toward each other!! Hugs to you!
“Cattitudes” — perfect word!
It is just a perfect day here in Western North Carolina. The air is turning crisp and some of the leaves are already changing. Come October, there is nothing finer than being in Carolina! I can’t wait for the first snow fall. I am a Fall and Winter kind of person. Too hot for me in the summer. I followed you every day while you were in England and I really can’t wait for your book to be published. I have never been to England and after following you, I am going to go with my daughter. We will need your book for guidance. You start my day off every time you write.
Blessings to you!
Bernadette
Hello Sue,
I was so happy you posted today…….you are surely missed, was having SB post withdrawls. I know your one busy lady.
Thank you for the sneak peek into the writings of your English Diary. I am in such awe of the work you do. How intricate every detail is……from the writing to the painting. I love your selection of books you have to surround you along with your angel cards which I thank you for sharing a link for this….so nice. The picture of the Rainbow above the Steeple of the Church gave me chills……love that so much, am a very spirtual person so it was just one of those perfect pictures. Plus the cloud picture over the Vineyard Sky…….so nice. It got down into the forties last night her in MA…..yeah…..my type of weather….the cooler the better after the hot summer we all had. I am so excited for your NE adventure. I have so many suggestions for you as my husband and I always take Saturday rides somewhere off the beaten path as they say or on the path whichever we feel like. I will just tell you one as I could go on forever where to go. Try (RT 100) through Vermont the Scenic Route. There are so many different little towns, different fairs going on all over and if you get a chance go to The Old Vermont Country Store…both you and Joe would love it. I do have your Autumn Cookbook and its my favorite but a signed copy……well I would just Faint! Happy Travels and Have a Happy Week……and thanks for another picture of the kitties and Petey too! Hugs and Smiles Barb…..Ludlow, MA:)
Thanks for the suggestion!!
Hi Sue….. Your welcome. Thank you for the reply…Smiles all around here. I know where ever you choose to go in NE, whichever state…you just cannot go wrong this time of year.
Enjoy! Hugs&Smiles 🙂
The Old Vermont Country Store–I’ve gotten their catalog for years. If you go there, Susan, plan to spend a LOT of time! All kinds of treasures!!! When we go East to visit Sandy in Attleboro, maybe next year, we plan to make a side trip there! 🙂
Hello Pat, 🙂
I hope you finally get the chance to make it out to the store.
There are two different locations…one in Rockingham VT and one in Weston VT…….you will be in awe and its a trip down memory lane for anyone whom goes. Have a happy Day!:)
Pat, the catalog you told me about and I ordered came yesterday and you are so right there are things that look delicious, tempting, and some a little odd?? but, it was fun to look through!! The address on the back is from Rutland, VT…and I think you would have a blast walking through it.
Hi Susan!
I enjoy reading your blog. I am looking forward to your new book. Any idea yet when it will be published? Inquiring minds want to know… 🙂 What a beautiful rainbow. I so love seeing the pictures of your house and cats. I have been to visit once on Martha’s Vineyard, and hope to return again. Your kitchen will be beautiful when it is done.
I am from Galva, Illinois. I am a Librarian. I love my job.
Hi Susan! Your book is looking great! Blessings!
Hi Susan,
I have the same angel cards! Aren’t they great? You’ve inspired me to go find them… AND to go get out your Autumn book, which yes I have, but yes it’d be great to give one as a gift! As always, thanks for sharing your blog!
Pat
Hi Susan! Your book is looking great! Blessings from Nashville!
I’ve had cooler nights here in Lodi, CA, too. I noticed on my morning walk with my four dogs that I almost needed a jacket. Bring on the autumn please! I would love to have a copy signed by you Sue! Please Vanna, pick me!
Fondly, Barbara Thomas
So happy I discovered your blog! While it’s beautiful here in a lovely little valley in the middle of British Columbia, Canada, it’s so nice to be whisked along on your adventures. I love the way you slow moments down to truly appreciate them and how you share those moments with all of us. Can’t wait to hold your books in my hands and savour each page!
I’d love to see what you’d see & share if you came up this way and experienced a Rocky Mountain train adventure. I’m sure you’d love visiting the regal old CP (Canadian Pacific) hotels which are now owned by Fairmont. The Banff Springs and Hotel Lake Louise are two of my most favourite.
Hi Susan! As usual, enjoyed reading your blog today. Your life sounds so peaceful and it’s “leaking” into mine (which isn’t so much so at the moment!) My son left yesterday for college and while he can be a royal pain when home, his absence is another kind of pain. It’s starting to cool off here in SLO and the spiders are out and busy so Autumn can’t be far behind. Sorry, but you missed I Madonnari yesterday – I always love the drawings but hate to see them go when the street sweeper comes in on Sunday night! You’ll probably be heading West soon, so you can catch up on all the “haps” when you get back! Have a wonderful Autumn getaway and thanks for the sweet peeks into your island life!
You are SO inspiring! I’ve been working on a little book for a very long time – actually, I’ve spent more time NOT working on it but now that I read about your diligence and see how it’s paid off, I’m motivated to get back into my studio and get busy! Can’t wait to read about “our” trip – and thanks so much for putting it all down on paper for us! I would love to win your book, just so you know! xo, Nan
FALL is my FAVORITE time of the year…….more so since we moved to the resort area of Lewes, Delaware (permanently) some 5 1/2 years ago!!!!! Love to go to my favorite spot at our Cape Henlopen State Park and find my stash of bittersweet to cut and hedge apples near the local high school to pick and decorate the house…………..
Hi Susan! I love the idea of Book Osmosis! This is something I think I’ll try – a beautiful idea. The photos of the sky, of the kitties, and the simple and perfect bouquet are a shot of pure joy – thank you.
Writing to you from Pennsylvania, northern Chester county – wonderful clear and cool weather here too.
Best regards,
Mary Ahearn
I love autumn and can’t wait for your English diary!!! Chesapeake City, MD is my home. You are such an inspiration!
Fall is my favorite season and we have a taste of it today (I even mowed the lawn today w/o an ice pack around my neck). It was 59 this am when I awoke – fabulous. Since we had the hottest July on record, here in Central Virginia, I am sooooo ready for fall. I too can’t wait for the Diary and want to thank you for the sneak peek – must be a labor of love for you, and great anticipation for all of us!!
Everytime I read your Martha’s vineyard posts it makes me homesick for Mass. I now live in rural Louisiana, but originally i was from Springfield, Mass. Would love to win your book. I have been following along with the home restorations you are doing, you are right, your hubby does have the patience of Job. When you are finished, how about sending him here to do mine?? Just kidding. Enjoy Fall in New England, and I sure hope I win.
I love Autumn here in the Northwest, and this is a special year for me, since in November I will be celebrating my 60th birthday(deep breath)! I would love a copy of your Autumn book to give to another friend who also has a November birthday.
I love the pages of your new book that you gave us a sneek peek of, and always wonder what luscious paints you use for watercoloring?
I love every kind of paint, and really have them all, from tubes of color to children’s paint boxes . . . it’s all good.
Just getting green again here in Illinois after the long dry summer. Hubby’s fussing about the grass growing again, he’s been on a long non-mowing break. Not a bad thing, though, the grass growing again, I mean – I’ve missed it, and he’s missed having an excuse to get out his big new mower. Cleaned out my overgrown weedy flowerbed last evening, and now off to load up the pile of stuff in the little red wagon that goes behind the big new mower. Fall, here we come!! 🙂
Hi Susan! 🙂 Your blog always makes my day and puts a smile on my face. Thank you, thank you!
Ashlee
Farmington, Utah
PS…it rained in SLC today!! We haven’t gotten a drop of rain all summer. We all stared out the windows at work like it was our first time seeing rain…wonderful. 🙂
Oh my, Susan, I do empathize with your kitchen trials – the kitchen is the hardest room of the house to remodel, I think. It’s not like a bathroom, because you usually have another one to use. But when the kitchen’s out of commission, you have to be very creative (not necessarily in a good way!) about cooking, just so you don’t gain 20 pounds eating out!
I am so excited to see your diary! It looks wonderful – one of my favorite things about your work is your watercolors. I love to just sit and page through your books and look at the beautifully painted pictures, the colors are so soft (even the bright ones).
Oh, by the way, your spiced pecans are my very favorite recipe in the Autumn book. I make them every fall, and have to hide them so my husband doesn’t eat them all. I leave him out a few, and then he knows there’s more, so he starts looking high and low. I’m thinking of buying a safe!
LOL! Too funny, I have the same problem with those nuts and Joe! (And me too, to be honest!)
Our family of four LOVE those spiced nuts!!!!!
We too, are having fabulous Fall weather, on the South Shore in Massachusetts! Not so far for the wonderful Autumn book to travel, if I should be the lucky winner! Thank you for your lovely blog…
Autumn??? We here in Scottsdale, Az are looking to at least 6 weeks more hot weather before the cool breezes arrive. Our youngest sons birthday is Oct. 21st and that is my guideline. It has to reach that date before the weather changes. But then we are blessed with WONDERFUL days of Autumn and Spring. Your writings bring it a wee bit sooner (to my mind, at least) and that is refreshing. Thank you 🙂
I just took Autumn down off the cookbook shelf, and have been perusing it for inspiration…..which means I decorated the front porch early this morning…with pumpkins, and a lovely wreath for the front door….and in the backyard (near the swings) there are more pumpkins, and a scarecrow for my grandaughter to discover next time she comes to our house. Thank you for encouraging, and inspiring me today!
I too wish it were Fall here in Torrance, California. Warm and a bit humid which luckily is rare. So enJOYed a peek at your new book and I can’t wait to join the pre-order list! Also looking forward to seeing your kitchen “Ta-DAH” pictures!
Love following the kitchen face-lift progress! We did a similar kitchen project a few years ago. Lots of cleaning painting and sorting to do. But once it’s done, it is soooo worth and a gentle nightmare in the past! Enjoy the process that will result in a wonderful gathering and work station. Love also seeing the book in progress. Keep us updated as we love the journey too! Hugz…Linda S from Nevada
Thank you Susan for reminding me to breathe today (it has been THAT kind of a Monday!). Enjoy the kitties so much. Weather here in Arkansas finally giving us some hope for cooler weather. Have a wonderful week!
Susan, so glad to see a post today. California, in the northern end, is finally getting some blue sky…with a little breeze, only a haze of smoke this morning. Fires certainly have had us surrounded and we’ll be glad when the fall rains come and give some assistance to those who protect our public lands and property of those who live near the National Forests. I am feeling ‘fallish’ this last weekend, canning tomatoes, making zucchini bread, and getting out the little sewing machine to work on projects. I’m a spring person but, do enjoy the first feel of fall and the slower pace it brings. Also, thanks so much for letting us peak into your diary, I’m excited to see what adventures we can relive. -r-
Oooooh, the English Diary is looking so good! I’m glad for the sneek peeks, but also glad that it’s not too much or too clear because I want it to be a surprise, too. Anticipation…
Even here in hot Texas, we’ve had a couple of days of fall preview. Wonderful weather! I love even the tiniest hint of autumn in the air. Our version is leaving the ceiling fan “off” all night.
I love that boy and girl in Happy-Land. So sweet. Is that illustration from the Happy Book for Children in your stack?
And bless Joe for not throwing in the paint brush. I know it will be beautiful when he’s done.
Thank you for another generous give-away. Someone’s going to be happy. Hope it’s me.
Linda from Sherman, Texas
Hi Susan,
It is Tammy from Nebraska who is really needing a cup of tea. I am a teacher and well my little butterflies have wings that won’t sit still and I am sure they would love Autumn when it comes and we enjoy the many blessings of God
Thank you for sharing your heart with us…I always smile when you have popped into my mailbox
Thank you for reminding us gals in Bemidji, MN what we have to look forward to in the Fall. We cherish it every year, before the snow flies, and we have to put TWO comforters on the beds!
Hi Susan, Thanks so much for sharing your world. I so look forward to your blog! Today has been an especially trying day and turning on the computer and seeing that you have written “me” a note is wonderful. It is officially autumn here in Deerfield, IL when I change the Summer Book with the Autumn Book on my kitchen counter.
Patty
Ahhhh…I love this time of year. I am enjoying the cool breeze and warm sunshine in Bethalto, IL today. I headed to the park and ate my lunch and upon my return I opened my email to your beautiful post1111111111…oops sorry, my kitty stretched out over my keyboard pressing the 1 key. Thank you, as always, for sharing…enjoying each and every moment of our day makes our world a brighter place to be.
Hi Susan, It is even feeling like Fall down here in the South. So wonderful! I would love an autographed copy of the Autumn book. Thanks and good luck with the kitchen. So excited about the travel journal book. Can’t wait!
I love reading your blog. It is always so cheerful and charming and cute. I just makes me feel happy to read it. Thanks for sharing your time.
Hello from Horsham Pennsylvania. It is a picture perfect day here today, 75 degrees, small breeze and big white fluffy clouds in the blue sky!! We love everything Susan Branch. Remember when my daughter Jessica wrote you a letter and tried to do drawings like you do! The Autumn book is my favorite! Can’t wait for your new book. Thank you for all your inspiration!
My daughter is moving into her own apartment this weekend. It would be so terrific to give her your Autumn book!
Vancouver, Washington. We just moved from Orange County, California and it’s exciting to be back in the Northwest and to see the season change. A few trees are starting to drop leaves and the air is cool and damp at night. We had our first good rain in over 50 days. I love Autumn, it’s my favorite season. My girls (ages 6 & 9) and I would love your book.
Please share what camera you use to take our gorgeous pictures?? I’ve lived in Texas my whole life; growing up in the Piney Woods, we actually experienced fall foliage, usually in November. Regrettably, Houston, where I live now does not have much seasonal distinctions. An absolute dream trip of mine is one day getting to tour New England in the fall. Can y’all pick apples, from a tree? I pick my apples at the grocery store!
Dearest Susan, I love your blog so much! I am from Minnesota but am currently lovin in Salt Lake City Utah. I miss the traditional Midwestern fall and winter so I am living vicariously through our writing.
I love your blog…There is just something about all things Susan Branch.
I thank you for that.
Here is my info
Chris S from Pasadena, California
My fingers & toes are crossed for this one since I don’t have the Autumn Book, it would so wonderful to have one from YOU!
Have a beautiful day Susan!!!
Las Vegas, Nevada
I am thrilled you are making a book about your trip to England, I enjoyed the blog, and looked forward every day to see if there was an entry, you got me through a long hot summer. Thanks, Patty
Temple, GA
We too are feeling Autumn approaching! We have the windows open and are planning a trip to pick apples this weekend! I love the smell in the air! It was 54 degrees this morning when I went for my walk! I LOVE IT!!! It is warming up to 83 degrees today but that is ok with me. It will be back down to 55 tonight and I am feeling another bon fire in our future!
Your Autumn book is my favorite so far 🙂 I am consulting with it for this weeks shopping list! I would love a copy to pass along to someone I love!
Ive been intrigued reading about your English experience. When we lived there, I wrote and illustrated a journal to capture memories of our village.
I’m sure yours will be wonderful to read when you are finished – I’m looking forward to it.
If you would care to see mine, you can find it here: pwsnwjournal.blogspot.com/p/lavenham-suffolk-uk.html
I don’t have a copy of your Autumn book, but would love to have one. Please enter my name in your drawing.
Thanks for many hours of enjoyment.
Hello Susan,
I enjoyed reading your post this evening when I got home from school. We have had a wonderful weekend here, temperatures of 26 Celsius, (not sure what that is in Fahrenheit but nice and toasty!) However, today is far more autumnal and I think it won’t be many more days until I light the fire in my little cottage. There is always something special about the first fire of the season, isn’t there. I am planning an assembly for my little ones this week around the theme “Signs of Autumn”, so it is very much on my mind. Please enter me in the draw for your book, fingers crossed!
Virginia Beach, VA, where today is the first day we’ve had under 80 degrees! I ride my bike to work and it was wonderful. Better yet, last night was the first we’ve been able to sleep with the windows OPEN! Pure Heaven. Sadly, this is only a teaser because we will be having plenty of hot summer days for the next 4-5 weeks which is typical for this area. We won’t be putting on sweaters or comforters until well into October/November.
Hi Susan,
We too are re painting the kitchen. I agree, it will be great to be finished and have a place to cook and eat again. In beautiful Bel Air, MD, we also have a touch of autumn, highs in the low 70’s and a wonderful breeze, no rainbows though. Looking forward to your new book!
Greetings from St. Charles, MO – Fall is my favorite season and I hope it is around the corner after our hot, hot summer! I am looking forward to your English Diary and thank you for giving us a sneak peek. I look forward to your posts and for sharing your life on Martha’s Vineyard with your fans.
Here today in Charlotte, North Carolina, it is 78 degrees with low humidity–wonderful for early September. Hope it will last the week. I’m so ready for fall!
I also love Fall!! My favorite season of the year… We just had the annual Mushroom Festival in our town, Kennett Square, PA this past weekend. You would love it here, charming, quaint town. Can’t wait for the England Book!
Hi Susan! Can’t wait for your England book! So fun that you share your progress with us! I’m here in a small city 35 miles East of Los Angeles up against the San Gabriel mountains, it’s a beautiful place to live! I may never make it to England, but at least I’ll feel like I have been after reading and re-reading your book! Your books are always kept in my dish cupboard because they are so delightful to read and refer to over and over. It must be so satisfying knowing you’ve created beautiful AND useful books! 🙂 Tami
Hi from Palo Cedro, Ca. My favorite season approaching after the harsh summer. Looking forward to the first fire in the woodstove but have awhile.
Oh Susan!!!! Every picture you post of or around your house I fall more in more in love!!! A church steeple from the front door?!? Love it!
Finally had a few cool days here, but back in the 90’s today. But at least it’s been cooler at night, and the light – oh the beautiful fall light. And we are finally supposed to get some rain this week for the first time in months.
I understand it taking so long to get the painting of the kitchen done since I own an older home too. Not as old as yours, but it too has its challenges. But I’ll take an old home over a new one any day. And just like you, I have a wonderful husband who does most of the hard work taking care of this place. Bob is my Joe.
The Autumn book is my favorite, and I’d love to have another copy to give to someone I love.
Susan, just delightful to get a sneak peak of your beautiful upcoming book! I’m here in Southern California….hot and humid. Definitely still berry popsicle days!
mmm, a berry popsicle sounds kind of good!
Hello and Happy September from Georgia! It was lovely sleeping with the window open last night but again we are back in the 80’s today. Some say that is cool. I am not happy above 78….Enjoy your runaway and I am so looking foward to your English dairy.

You should find it very easy to find homes for your little kitties!
Still looking for signs of Autumn here in Burbank, CA. So happy to see the snippets of the new book and hoping that personalizations will be possible when you do the upcoming book tour! My California girlfriends will “need” one. We’ve had the Autumn book for ages — and those spiced pecans are terrific decorating a pumpkin pie. Finally, my daughter has reached the time in her life to want her own copy so it would be great to win!
Guess my name gives it away:):) We are near Green Bay, enjoying some lovely Fall weather….don’t want to rush winter tho, as I’m not a fan:):)….however last winter was FABULOUS!!! Hardly any snow….moderate temps….I’m hoping we will have a repeat this year::):)
Love your friendship…you are so generous to all of us:):):)
Thank You♥♥♥
Greetings, Susan, from Madison, Ct. It is a glorious fall day here also. I have been working in the garden all morning and pulled your autumn book off the shelf to read with lunch. I would love to win another copy to send to a dear friend in Oklahoma.
oh yes- and please enter me for the Autumn Book too….

Kathy Fletcher from Wilmore, Kentucky.
The diary looks like it’s coming along fabulously! I’ll be in line to get a copy when it comes out. It’s good the kitchen is coming along and that you’ll have a autumn break in a few weeks. The pictures of Jack in the kitchen were a riot!
Greetings from Bethel, CT!
It’s a beautiful day here — cool, nice, and breezy.
My heart sings when I see there is another blog account of your everyday life. Both you and Joe weilding your brushes – both jobs requiring attention to detail and a sence of the finished whole. I think I can even smell the fresh air mingled with the scent of fall and, yes that is fresh paint. I am amazed by your process and focus. Do we get to pre-purchase the book you are working on?? If so, when. And meanwhile, I would love to be honered with a signed Autumn. Having only discovered you in the last year I am slowly hunting down each of your volumes. I’ve got to dash – teaching beginning watercolor class at the Senior Center – I will show them your blog as insipiration!
Oh thank you! And yes, we’ll have a pre-order — After I have a few more pages done . . . I’ll be sure to announce it on the blog! Joe just came to a really small corner in the kitchen and borrowed one of my watercolor brushes! It’s a painting day alright!
Hi, Susan. I so love your blog and all the wonderful flowers. I also have a tuxedo kitty named Skeeter so I love to see your kitty pictures. Since I seem to be so full of love today, I’d also LOVE LOVE LOVE to have a copy of your Autumn Book to complete my collection!
Thanks
Jonnie
Greeting Sue, from your neighbor to the north – New Brunswick, Canada – where evidence of Autumn is in full view. Why don’t you head up this way on your four-day getaway? We’d love to have you!!!!
Can’t wait to read your book on your trip to England. I have several of your books, but not Autumn. I would be one happy Maritimer if I had my name drawn to win it.
You are an inspiration Susan Branch 🙂
Hi from Kansas City, MO. It has been a long, long hot summer, so I am so looking forward to Fall!! Thanks for a chance to win your Autumn Book.
Susan,
We could use a little autumn here in Florida. It’s still in the 90s during the days and our lows are in the low 70s. I do love Florida but I miss fall the most. I’m getting the urge to get out the fall decorations but I’m trying to wait a couple of weeks. 🙂
Sue in Florida
I spend so much time here on your blog. When I’m ready for a cup of coffee in the afternoon, I settle in to see what’s going on in your part of the world. I live in central Florida and it’s been a beautiful summer! Thanks for sharing your life and your art with all of us! Sweet Southern hugs, Diane
As usual, enjoying your kitty stories that are so similar to my own… LOL
Just hope you know how impressive and amazing it is to know that you HAND WRITE and DRAW and PAINT all of your books! I wish I had half your talent and patience!
Of course, I would LOVE a copy of the Autumn Book…one of the very few I don’t have. 🙁
Have a gorgeous Autumn day! XO
Kristina

Hello Susan,
I love your blog and books ( and your cats!!) Autumn has always been my favorite season ( I just bought three big pumpkins yesterday).I hope to find some wild bittersweet soon. Thanks for sharing your trip to England!!!
Hi Susan,
Have been a fan forever and have all of your books which I love each and every one. Been anxiously awaiting your book, “Pancakes”. Is that something I made up? Were you working on that book or am I dreaming?
Hi Susan! I’m dying to see your new kitchen when you’re done with the renovations. I just know it’s going to look even better than it did before, which is hard to imagine. ;~)
And I can’t wait for your new book! It sounds like a lot of work, but I’m sure it must be very rewarding and a great way for you to cement those memories in your mind.
Have a blessed day everyone!
