HAPPY VALENTINE’S DAY!

Just a little Valentine mood MUSICA for some of my very favorite people . . . ♥

Yesterday most of our snow had melted, the grass was green, and I was having little pangs of Spring Fever . . . and today, as the sun began to come up, I looked outside to one of the prettiest snowstorms I’ve seen in a long time.

Just a beautiful day on the island.  My girlfriend Margot called at 6am to say, “You have to go look at the sunrise!”  One look and I burrowed right back into winter . . .

And now, the wind is blowing clumps of snow off roofs and trees and making it look like it’s snowing, but it’s not.

It’s just adding to the romance of an already romantic day…

As does this . . .

It’s the feet I love the most.

I took Joe his breakfast a while ago.  His Valentine’s present.

I made it in a cookie cutter.

Happy Valentine’s Day Girlfriends! I hope you’ve all received your Valentine Willards! Just as you read, we’re having a drawing for a pre-publication copy of my new book A FINE ROMANCE!

To be entered, just leave a comment (click on the tiny grey word “comments” just under this post). Sometime after the 20th, Vanna, our resident chooser-in-chief, will pick the winning name! When the book comes in, I’ll sign it and send it to the lucky winner. Until then, especially for today, I’m sending you virtual chocolate kisses and red roses and hope (sweetheart or no sweetheart, no one needs a sweetheart to celebrate Valentine’s Day) that your day includes something special just for you. xoxo Make all your Valentine dreams come true no matter what and be your own darling sweetheart!  Love you, THANK YOU!  I’m thrilled about the book, you just have to know … yesterday, I wrote the ending and I made myself cry!  Thank you for joining me on this book-writing adventure! xoxo P.S. Just in case you need it, you can view WILLARD here!

Hi Susan! Can’t wait for your new book to come out so I can travel to merry ole England through your lovely artistry. I commented recently about how much I enjoy your Musica selections (especially the old songs). Have you heard Doris Day’s “I Got the Sun in the Morning”? I know you will love its lyrics.

How lovely a post! So romantic! Loved Jack’s feet, and Joe’s breakfast! A happy Valentine’s Day to you too, dear Susan!

  11. Cindy Davis says:

Thanks so much for the beautiful books you create. I so enjoy your blog, as well. After sending my Valentine off to work and three little Valentines off to school, I went to the hospital to be with my mom and dad. My parents will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary in June. My 77 year-old dad had knee replacement today on Valentine’s Day. My mom was there eagerly waiting when they brought him to his room after surgery. She was ready to help take care of him during his stay and in the weeks that follow. That is what love is. Isn’t it romantic? Happy Valentine’s Day! Can’t wait to see your new book!

  12. Kathleen Hirst says:

Hi Susan, Happy Valentine’s Day to you and Joe. Hope it was lovely. I just love Jack’s lil feet. Cats paws are the best. Love the heart shaped egg. I just love everything you do. Can’t wait for the book to come out. Ciao for now, Kathleen!

  13. Theresa Bjorklund says:

Would love to be considered as the recipient of the pre-publication copy of your book. Our family and friends have become fans of yours since I purchased 4 of your recipe books as gifts. We had our god-daughter and 2 daughters get married within a 5 month time-frame – whew!! . . . we included recipe cards in shower invitations for family and friends to share their tried and true family favorites with the newly weds – they have really enjoyed your beautiful illustrations that help to make the recipes even more special!! I’m anxiously waiting for your book move through the publishing process – Congrats!!

Oh, what a wonderful journey from the moment the spark of the idea popped into view, stepping on board the QM II, and taking paint brush in hand!!! Thank you, Susan, for bringing us along on the exciting, funfilled journey! All the girlfriends can’t wait for a copy of The Book!! Congratulations for coming to the last page!! I’ve needed your blogs to brighten my days since I lost my valentine a few weeks ago and it’s been a numbing effect to know I won’t have him near, but he’ll be in my heart always & forever!! May you and Joe cherish each moment and have a Happy Valentine’s Day.

  16. Marilyn says:

#830 here and I just know it is the number you will draw for the book. I just wish it would be coming out before my trip to England at the end of August. So I really must win it to be able to use it for the trip. Please! Pretty Please!

  17. Chris Olsen says:

    Your beautiful Blog has
given me a lovely day! I have been thrilled with your work ever since I picked up a magazine many years ago and saw pictures of your home with the beautiful wisteria growing in front. I loved the art work that circled the pages and have kept that issue all these many years. Good luck with your new book. I know it will be wonderful.

  18. Happy Valentine’s Day ~

  21. Pat Johnson of Paso Robles says:

I fell in love when I heard a knock at the front door – opened it to find Fred, whom I had only met a few days before – with his arms loaded with grocery bags, asking “Have you eaten breakfast yet?” The way to a woman’s heart is through the stomach, TOO! One month later we were married and it went on for 42 years!! What a ride that was! I found the last Valentine he wrote to me – 2008 – he went into the nursing home in 2009. It is treasured by ME!! He saw me writing cards to the kids & grandkids & borrowed one – spelled much of it wrong – but the message was loud and clear – “I will always love you! The King!” How lucky I am & was 🙂 Today I was at my daughter’s house and my son-in-law came through the door, delivering roses & candy to his wife (my daughter), my grand-daughter and ME! What a wonderful surprise! I got the chocolate covered strawberries!!!! Makes me get teary eyed just thinking about it once again. AND…….my neighbor left me candy and a card on my fence post before she went to work this morning! My what a day! To all of the BFF’s out there – HAPPY VALENTINE’S DAY!!! AND – I got my Willard, reading it in bed at 1:00am – only to jump out of bed and run to the computer and order A Fine Romance!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! How sweet it is!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! What a life we lead……….Happy Day to Joe & Sue & Kitties too……XXXXOOOO Pat

  22. Vicky Laney says:

Thank you so much for the beautiful photos of snow scenes and fireplace! I grew up near Lake Erie and remember winters just like that. Now I live in Georgia where snow is rare, but I enjoyed being taken back!

  23. Rita from MN says:

Happy Valentine’s Day! The book is finished? What a sense of accomplishment you must feel. Congratulations! Whether my name is picked by Vanna or not, I think I am a winner because I will be preordering the book for me and my niece. Shh, don’t tell. 🙂

  24. Robin in New Jersey says:

You are such a delight! I just finished reading Willard and you always bring a smile to my face. I am looking forward to reading your new book. Thank you for the bookmark. 🙂

    You are a blessing!

  25. Mady says:

So looking forward to A Fine Romance! Happy Valentine’s Day to you and yours!

  26. Mary A. Brown says:

I’m the 830th commenter! Wow! This has been a good Valentine’s Day for me except that today my sister lost her job! Don’t feel too bad as she has been talking of retiring and now she is. It’s an opportunity to go and explore life. I would love to be able to send her your new book to empower her to go explore and perhaps find “A Fine Romance.” Mary A Brown

  27. Rebecca Dexter says:

You always cheer me up…especially when you use a Gladys Taber quote. I treasure a letter she wrote to me years ago and always feel a connection to someone who loves her too.

  28. Sharon Scott says:

Happy Heart Day Susan. Thank you for the give~away. I can’t wait to read your newly finished book!

  29. Kathleen Clark says:

Oh, Susan, I have learned so much from you! Thank you for sharing your wonderful life with all of us. I was living in England when you were there last summer and I followed your travels faithfully. I’m back in Utah now, but while I lived in England for 18 months I absolutely positively fell head over heels in love with England. Now I can’t wait to read your book and remember that beautiful country. Did you go see Highclere Castle where they film Downton Abbey? I got to go there with my two daughters and three granddaughters when they came to see me last August. What a fascinating place! Now I’m hooked on Downton Abbey just like my girls are!

  30. Becky says:

I am the big sister in my family, and I’m going to say to you what I say to my sisters; I AM SO PROUD OF YOU! YOU ROCK! Truly, well done, Sue. When you spoke of getting teary eyed at the ending, I got teary, as well. I am not good at delayed gratification, so I am really going to have to deep breathe and wait patiently for your book to be released. Beatles said it best;”all you need is love.” I know you can feel all of the love we funnel back to you from your posts to us. Isn’t it a great relationship we all have!

  31. Suzanne says:

HAPPY VALENTINE’S DAY Susan and Joe. Can’t wait to see your new book. Vanna “p l e a s e” pick me.

  32. EJ says:

I would adore winning the drawing, however, if I do not, I will for a certain, purchase the book! I have always wanted to go to Miss Potter’s home in the Lake Country. I followed all you and Joe’s adventures. It WAS almost like we were there. I like your little tableau of the Calico cup. I collect Blue Calico and have purchased your blue calico note cards and the stickers that have the calico cup and tea pots. I never knew you REALLY had a calico cup. We ARE kindred spirits! Thank you for being YOU!

  33. Pat C. says:

The front of your home is lovely, Susan! Are those paper hearts in each window? I know you have written about it but I wondered when the house was built and if it was first owned by a seafaring family?

Loved the heart-shaped egg for Joe. You always do such nice little touches for holidays and for celebrating special days.

  34. Bonnie Crawford says:

    Hi Sue!~~
Happy Valentine’s Day to you, and Joe!! =) I am so excited your book is almost ready to publish!!~ How fun is that? And to announce it on Valentine’s Day is PERFECT!~ Thank you for the sneak preview on a few of the pages….it gets us all even more anxious to read it. You are so gifted in everything you touch…..it will be a special treasure for us all!~~~ xoxo
    Love you, xoxo

Thanks for being so descriptive in your writing and for the fabulous photos! Also, please keep those kitty photos coming….they are a daily highlight for me!

  37. Elisabeth Breckow says:

Your Valentine breakfast for Joe looks great. I made my husband and me your orange chocolate chip muffins, and we both thought they were sensational — so light, and great flavor and texture (not to mention the fragrance in the kitchen). Thanks for all the great recipes (and posts). Know A Fine Romance also will be “devoured” by all your grateful fans!

  38. Laurie - from San Luis Obispo says:

I have to tell you about the special Valentine I received this morning. Due to a medical situation my husband was unable to purchase a Valentine card for me. Yesterday he asked if I had any construction paper and Valentine crafting supplies. He wanted to make me a Valentine. What a perfect card he made. I will treasure it more than any I have received before.

  51. Debbie Spence says:

I just spent my Valentine evening with 12 girls ages 9 to 16. We talked about the longings of their hearts which are awakening and stirring, and in some, raging. We decided that the longings are not bad, just when we seek the wrong things to fill those longings. So for this Valentine day, and hopefully till each of them are older, God is going to fill that longing. So glad He is my Valentine. (well, my sweet hubby of 30 years is my Valentine too!)

  52. Elaine from South St. Paul, MN says:

    Hi Susan ,
Thanks for your Valentine post……it is great! Cannot wait for your new book. I took my dream trip to England and kept a diary but it does not compare to what you are doing. Thanks so much for putting it together.

  62. Martha Lou says:

Your works were special to my aunt. She left this world recently. Today she and my uncle would have been married 71 years. A gift to me from her were some tiny feather birds to place among my indoor plants. I was enjoying them this morning when I noticed a commotion outside the window. A large bluejay was aggressively chasing tiny sparrows and cardinal couples out of our pineapple guava bush. He thought it was his own! That is OK, that bush produces blessed fruit. The jam I make from the fruit helps our family and friends enjoy their breakfast biscuits and pancakes. A cold front came thru
last night making the choice to stay inside and quilt today an easy one. However, I do miss the years we didn’t live in the South, when ice or snow
came in while we slept and transformed the world around us…it became all sparkly and pristine. I ramble…memories are good alone but satisfying when shared. Blessings Willard and Susan…..Martha L.

  63. Denise W. Jose says:

My sweetie and I had a wonderful St. Valentine’s Day.

  74. Joann says:

    Happy Valentine’s Day Susan!!!!

Rod and I don’t celebrate Valentine’s Day because my dad was buried on that day; however, we MET on my Dad’s birthday, which is 2/19, so THAT is our LOVE day….so we get Valentine’s cards (sort of), basically just super mushy love-love cards and celebrate on the 19th.

It’s a Fine Romance…..the one that has healed my heart from the time I fell in love with someone who truly broke my heart and a bit of my spirit. But it’s all back in one and stronger than ever now.

A Fine Romance is a great title for your new book, for we ALL have a romance in our hearts….from homes to kitties, to places far, far away, or just a little cozy spot by the fire.

    XOXO

    Joann

  75. Linda says:

Oh, gee all that mushy stuff!!! Maybe that is why I have no sweetheart–ha! Hope you have a wonderful Valentines Day although I think that every day for you is Valentines Day!! Glad your book is finished…..sure hope I win the drawing as I would be truly honored. Just another day here in Idaho but a sunny one and almost all the snow is gone….one little patch in the front yard which was where most of the snow was shoveled to. It was in the high 40’s and maybe hit 50 but not sure. A nice day for sure. Thanks for always being a bright spot in my day.

What delights ~ a new blog AND my very first Williard! Your calendars have given me smiles for years, but I only recently discovered your website (while trying to find your calendar sold out of the local bookstores) and am trying to make up for lost time. Thank you for being an indefatigable joy spreader!

Susan, thank you so much for letting us into your world. As I followed your journey, I fell in love with the photos you posted and the tales you told. Family lore says we’re decended from Mary, Queen of Scots, so I think the longings I feel may require an actual visit, but I truly look forward to seeing the country through your eyes first.
Love the little “Dalmatian” spots on Jack’s paws.
    Happy Valentine’s Day, my friend.

  86. Karen says:

I have a small row of books about England that I have collected through the years thinking – or imagining that one day I might go there. But I know that will not be possible. So, I plan to order your new book when it comes out and take an armchair trip to the land from which many of my ancestors came. I will take the trip in a comfy chair sitting in the sunshine with a nice cuppa tea.

  89. Kelly Machnov says:

I love and adore the whimsical artistic creations by Susan Branch, all things Emma Bridgewater related, lovely images and stories from Beatrix Potter and the anticipation of this new book with the very same title as one of my new favorite finds ‘A Fine Romance’ featuring my all time favorite actress Dame Judi Dench!

p.s. How about that for the world’s longest sentence?

All the best to you Susan,

    Kelly Machnov

  90. Nancy Ciminello says:

I am so excited for the book – to see the sheep. We went to Ireland in September – that’s where I fell in love with them. I would love to go to England and compare these dear, dear animals.

Congratulations on completing the book! How exciting! Now what will you do all day long? 🙂 Oh I know, spring is around the corner and you will have plenty to do then. 🙂
Thanks for the chance to win a copy of your book.
Also I did not receive my Willard. I’ve never had problems with getting it before……………hmmmm… wonder what’s up.

Susan, I can’t wait to have a copy of the book and find myself loving England! I so enjoyed your updates to us and to have it as a keepsake would be just wonderful! You are a kind person, one of the few “popular people” that takes the time and effort to kabits with your on line girlfriends! I talk about your website all the time.

Many wonderful and happy winter days for you and your Joe.

    Happy Valentine’s Day Susan!!
Loved the Willard! It’s so exciting you are finishing the book, I can’t wait to get my copy. It will arrive in my favorite month, October.
There is nothing cuter than kitty feet, except maybe kitten feet. Or kitty whiskers, or kitty noses.
    Have a lovely day!!

I thought I left a comment this morning but I don’t see it, and I do not want to miss my chance to win your book, even though I did pre order a copy 🙂
I bought Heart of the Home when it first came out, and most every book you’ve written since. I was then a young mother living in a very cold place with snow. I’m still a young mother, even though my son’s are grown men, but I live in the desert now. I read your Christmas book every year at that time, but this year found your blog as well. Happiness for me every time I see a new one, and my first Willard today too!
Happy Valentine’s day, I love your work 🙂

I cannot wait for the new book to be published! Its been too long since your last book–at least from my perspective. I will be buying a copy as soon as they are available. I’m sure it will be a big success for you.

  99. Happy St. Valentine’s Day to you Susan. I am sending you this comment to tell you how much I have been enjoying your blog. Also, I MUST tell you. My very very first cook book was from you (many years ago) and I still have it!!! I am so happy to have found you.

I, too, love England and I decided to move to an island too but it is on the west coast. I really wanted to move to England but since my son is in college on the west coast and since I am originally from CA, I thought it would be safer to move to an island off the beautiful state of Washington. I am in heaven. We do not get that much snow here – nothing like where you live – but we did have a couple of days here and there. Many gorgeous rainy days and clear sunny skies in the summer. I even built an English/French (Normandy) home.

Anyway, now that I have found you, I must purchase your book from England. I cannot wait to get it and enjoy a fabulous read with a cuppa.

Awwww, Happy Valentine’s Day Susan! (and Joe and kitties!).
The day is almost over here on the west coast, but that’s okay…my sweet love often says EVERY day is Valentine’s Day, and he truly makes it feel that way! (yes, I know how lucky I am!)
Reading your post, I was smiling a giggling but, when I read that the ending of your book (which I can barely wait for!) made you cry, it made me tear up too! (my kids and I used to call this the “laugh-cry”) 🙂
Thank you for another wonderful, generous giveaway! I will fall asleep tonight dreaming of England, with visions of your magical trip dancing in my head. xoxo
