HAPPY VALENTINE’S DAY!

Just a little Valentine mood MUSICA for some of my very favorite people . . . ♥

Yesterday most of our snow had melted, the grass was green, and I was having little pangs of Spring Fever . . . and today, as the sun began to come up, I looked outside to one of the prettiest snowstorms I’ve seen in a long time.

Just a beautiful day on the island.  My girlfriend Margot called at 6am to say, “You have to go look at the sunrise!”  One look and I burrowed right back into winter . . .

And now, the wind is blowing clumps of snow off roofs and trees and making it look like it’s snowing, but it’s not.

It’s just adding to the romance of an already romantic day…

As does this . . .

It’s the feet I love the most.

I took Joe his breakfast a while ago.  His Valentine’s present.

I made it in a cookie cutter.

Happy Valentine’s Day Girlfriends! I hope you’ve all received your Valentine Willards! Just as you read, we’re having a drawing for a pre-publication copy of my new book A FINE ROMANCE!

To be entered, just leave a comment (click on the tiny grey word “comments” just under this post). Sometime after the 20th, Vanna, our resident chooser-in-chief, will pick the winning name! When the book comes in, I’ll sign it and send it to the lucky winner. Until then, especially for today, I’m sending you virtual chocolate kisses and red roses and hope (sweetheart or no sweetheart, no one needs a sweetheart to celebrate Valentine’s Day) that your day includes something special just for you. xoxo Make all your Valentine dreams come true no matter what and be your own darling sweetheart!  Love you, THANK YOU!  I’m thrilled about the book, you just have to know … yesterday, I wrote the ending and I made myself cry!  Thank you for joining me on this book-writing adventure! xoxo P.S. Just in case you need it, you can view WILLARD here!

  6. Lisa @ My Ordinary Country Life says:

You don’t have to post this but you said you loved love stories and I wanted to share mine……..
My heart beat fast. I was sure he looked my way. But I was just an eighth grader and he was a tenth grader. But wasn’t he divine! I loved his curly hair.

It was homecoming week and he was a football player.

I had liked him since I was in the sixth grade.

It was hat day….everyone in school could wear any hat they wanted all day.

    I wore a baseball cap.

The bell was about to ring and we were walking through the school hall and he passed by me.

    And he stole my hat!!!!!!

    Oh I was so happy!

What did that mean? He did know I existed! Was he flirting?

He hurriedly said “I will give it back to you last period” and then he went to class.

I floated to my next class. I couldn’t concentrate all day. Does he like me? Does he know that I like him?

Finally the last bell rings. Will he show up?

He walks in as I’m gathering my books. (Swoon)

He says “Here’s your hat back…..I left something in it. I’ve got to go to football practice. See ya.”

My heart is pounding as I look inside the hat.

A little bitty candy wrapper is folded and tucked inside the hat.

I slowly unfold it and it says LW + ST

I am smiling from ear to ear….my heart is bursting with happiness!!!

That was 35 years ago and we’re still together
We have been married for 28 years.

He is the only man I have ever dated.
He is the only man I have ever kissed.
He is the only man I have ever loved.

  30. Karen Williams says:

How absolutely wonderful, not only to get your Willard today, but a blog post too! Had to tell you how romantic it has been here: when I was out at our local shop I heard the church bells ringing out…there was a wedding – yes! Happening today St Valentine’s Day…sooo romantic, I nearly cried!
Have decorated our kitchen with liddle red hearts and left two cards in different places for His Nibs to find…and the most delish chocolates in a cute British flag-designed box….and happiest of all, he shared them with me and gave me a cute card with knitted pigs on it! Lol for knitted pigs!
I am about to get a surprise dinner of sirloin steaks ready for him…ssh..not a word! He will be eating both as I don’t like steaks! But he is a great carnivore so will have a great time…oh and we have real champagne which I bought on my first ever trip to Paris with my dear friend
Bernie…we went last July…for the DAY!!
So with romantic Paris champagne, lovely cards, steak and knitted pigs…what a romantic Valentine’s day for us…our 32nd together, 28 of them married ones! Oh and I have checked…..because of the latest food scares…they are beef steaks and not horse!!

I am going onto your shop site next to see if your book might get to me over here in Blighty…and if I win, I will have one for my lovely friend Bernie to give one to as well!

Much love to you all over the pond and many thanks for the winter warmers that are your blogs…absolutely adore the pics of Britain – which make me appreciate our wonderful land even more…love the kitties, the stories and the amazing pics of birdies in the garden, especially the cardinals…so beautiful on wintry days, oh and loving your moving pics in the blogs and Willard! Ab fab to see the fire crackling or the snow falling – ve ve clever!
All the best with the final pieces in your book-jigsaw and hope it all goes well at the printers etc and look forward to seeing it!
Love to you on a loving day!

  32. Debbie Johnson says:

    Happy Valentine’s Day Susan!
I am having a wonderful one..this morning I found 2 Valentine cards in my laptop. One from my sweet hubby of almost 35 years and another from our 3 dogs. Then when I opened my laptop there was the Valentine song from Sir Paul-sent from Paul through my Rob. Our second son called me, I love him so much. My youngest son (about to wed & leave the nest!) wrapped 2 gifts for me…Books!! Peter Pan (squeal) and Swiss Family Robinson!! And it is only 9:30 am!
Last Saturday Rob & celebrated with a very romantic Valentine dinner party with just the two of us. He was so sweet and gave me Emma’s LOVE mug (he ordered through your web store!)
    I am loved.
    Hugs,
    Debbie

Thanks so much for the romantic “musica” the Platters and only you. Those classic songs surely know how to create romantic moments. All your photos and art fill my heart with happiness as these winter days roll on. Valentine’s Day is like that “vacation” we all need between the cold frigid days of winter and the anticipation of the warm days of rejuvenation of spring. Thanks for always adding joy and cheer to my days. Kathy in CT

Well work came looking for me this morning and could not be avoid, I lost it!, not pretty, my poor man , in the mist of my drama He calls, I have a message MY FIRST WILLARD! everything was O.K. after reading it , I calmed down, apologized and realized the beauty we have in each moment and in each other. Dear Susan you have that magic that you share and I want to Thank you for it.

A trip to England is on our not too distant bucket list. I can’t wait for your book so I can start planning a wonderful adventure of our own. I don’t suppose you’d like to do another book on Ireland (hint, hint). Love the Willard’s and seeing the world through your eyes.

    • judy says:

Lynn in Eureka Springs, AK: You are in the most romantic place on this continent! I’d love to be there in that quaint little place. Victorian buildings just as they were so many years ago–ornate gingerbread cottages–just perfect on a day like today, on Christmas day, or any other day for people who want a peek at the past, still alive today! Enjoy that special place and never take it for granted. Learn all you can about it and what made it special………

  42. Marion Rose says:

“Happy Valentine’s Day” Oh what a beautiful day with the sun shinning on the new fallen snow. Joe is so lucky receiving a heart for breakfast, lovely. I haven’t received my Willard yet, I keep watching for it. Susan, I sent you a couple of posts last night but they didn’t show up on your blog. One was about our Valentine Party. Last night I ordered my copy of A Fine Romance, now the wait begins. I notice you will be giving one of the copies as a gift. If I am a winner I will have one to give to a friend. Enjoy this special day with Joe and your kitties

  45. Janie says:

Susan, received my lovely and inspirational Willard this morning here in North Carolina. Thank you. I hope that it is ok that I forwarded it to my 86 year old mom and brother to enjoy. I also wanted to put a “plug” in their ear. I am so.oo.. hoping to receive a copy of your wonderful book as a gift. You amaze me! Everytime I read a blog post or open a Willard I am always blown away by how you really live your life. You are so inspiring. I asked my husband last night while chatting before turning out the lights a question. I asked what was on his “bucket list”? Susan, he was so funny. He first asked me what I meant by a bucket list. After explaining..he said..I ‘ve tried to make everyday a day I enjoy and appreciate. This morning when reading Willard I realize that one does not have to have a bucket list, they simply need to Live each day fully and completely and take opportunities when they come and not wait for tomorrow. When I looked at the picture of Joe’s heart shaped egg I realized that you live your life in a manner that brings joy and happiness to you and Joe and that you do not worry about how other people are living their life today..reality tv??? I will admit one thing… I pray that I will be blessed to meet you in person and have a photograph together. What a joy it will be to post that photo in an album so others can see a picture of the person who inspired me to live fully and completely!! Happy Valentines to you and Joe!!

  46. Teresa in the OC says:

I love this day. My husband and I are heading to Paris in a week to celebrate a milestone anniversary – love is in the air! Can’t wait for your book, Susan. What a special gift that will be. A very sweet Happy Valentine’s Day to everyone here :-).

Although I am apart from my Valentine today (he’s in school so we live in different cities) he called me today and said that he’s is planning a trip for us to Boston & MARTHA’S VINEYARD this May while he is on break from school!!! I’ve never been to either place and could not be more excited! Happy Valentine’s day to you and Joe!

I keep wondering if we’ll crash your whole system between your blog and Willard. I’ve been clicking, shopping, reading and having a marvelous time! 55. Carole says:

Happy Valentines Day Susan !! I happily discovered your blog two weeks ago and have been happily reading my way through it. I’ve started at the beginning and bookmark each time I have to stop. So wonderful to find it and to share your enthusiasm about making a home. I was inspired to take down and wash my grandmother’s thin glasses and bring the Beatrix Potter people from the back of the cupboard. Dear Miss Tiggy Winkle and the bunnies! I have told almost everyone I know – go to wonderful Susan Branch’s blog. I have loved every minute of it- the trip to England and train trips to California. Have won several of your books from ebay and am waiting for them to arrive. Would love to be the winner of your new A Fine Romance. If not, I will certainly be ordering it. I signed up for your Willard, but haven’t recieved it. Hope there was no mistake – can’t wait to read it. Thank you so much for sharing your life with your friends, whom I now count myself among. Carole

  56. Holly says:

Happy Valentines Day everyone! And… especially you Susan! Thank you so much for all the beautiful Willards, and blog posts you send my way. I appreciate them all so very much.

I had to smile when your lamb planter came up. I have the very same one, (I collect old, shapely white vases, pottery, plant pots with attached saucers) and love my little lamb.

This is a very special Valentines Day for me. Yesterday, my 27 year old son, who is autistic, gave me a gift. The very first gift– something he went out and especially purchased. I know it sounds like a small thing, but for him to step outside of himself, and actually think about a gift is huge. It makes me cry just thinking about it.

I hope all the girlfriends are blessed with lots of love especially today. xoxoxo

  57. I am so excited about your new book, count me in! I love reading your stories & cookbooks but most of all I love your art work & illustrations. As a treat for my dear friends I sent them a link to your Valentine page with lots of love to all!

Happy Valentine’s Day! On a visit to Asheville, North Carolina a few months ago, I bought a little pillow with the saying “Enjoy the little things, for one day you will realize they were the big things.” I love that saying and believe it is so true. Each time I read your blog, I can tell that you find joy in the “little things” because you know that they are the “big things” in life. As you write about the progress of your newest book, trips, your days at home, the snow storms, your cats, and the many other topics, your joy for life really comes through. I am so glad I found your blog!

  61. Chris Hecox says:

Like you, I love England! And when I was 9, I sailed across the Atlantic on the Queen Elizabeth I and returned on the Queen Mary I, so I loved following you and Joe along. Reading your blog makes my day – thanks!

  62. What joy! I really cant wait for your book to come out, and the thought of possibly winning a copy is too exciting to pass up! Your newsletter is one of my greatest joys to see in my inbox and savory every word and picture of it on those mornings that it arrives. Your charm and generosity of sharing your life through your paintings, writings, and your welcoming personality is like gettings letters from a dear best friend. Thanks for sharing them and you with us. And thank you for the little drawing too! What fun! <3

  63. Priscilla from So. Ca. in SD says:

Happy Valentine’s Day Susan and Joe!

Have you finished all the pages for “A Fine Romance”? Looking forward to this book and the other one that is on hold. I am in need of some enchantment in my life.

  64. patty scott says:

Love the blog and Willard! Would love the book, too! Remembering the beautiful red dress, with ruffles at the cuffs and neck that my mother made me for the Valentine dance in 1965–first date with my future husband. I am about to bring her, at age 90, to an assisted living near my home. She is looking forward to the socialization. She’s frail, but spunky. I tell her she is a pioneer of old age, setting an example for her 6 children, 9 grandchildren and 8 great grands.

  65. Lucia Donahower says:

Happy Valentine’s Day to you and Joe!

Susan – haven’t received Willard yet – (10 AM PST) – this happened once before and Kelly posted a link – any chance? No it’s not in spam, or hiding somewhere –
Thanks so much – I pre-ordered the book since I could tell from postings that it was available for order. Can’t wait! Thanks Beth

Happy Valentine’s Day! The best cries are the happy ones! Although I will admit, when I am sad and I don’t cry, I need to release. I try to hold it in but it never fails….a sad cry can also feel good!
I am a fairly new fan of yours and have to admit I am OBSESSED with reading every little part of this amazing website. Reading your sharing of your life with us “girlfriends” really brings that much more happiness to my life, and I am sure all of our lives! Thank you from the bottom of my heart!

Oh, and I wouldn’t want to forget the new drawing for the book!!!! So many explanation marks, but I can’t help it. I’m so excited! (and I just can’t hide it!) Thanks for making my day special.

One day will you please tell us just how watercoloring asked you to share your talent with us. I’d love to hear about your watercoloring adventures. I’d love to try my hand at watercoloring. Does drawing come first?

A “heartfelt” Valentines Day due to a post my daughter had on her facebook remembering as a child tea parties on Valentines Day at home! Also a message wishing we were drinking tea and eating chocolates together. She is serving in the Peace Corp in Africa and we wont get to see her until September of 2014! She truly is “changing hearts”. Your blogs and Willards give me comfort:)

  78. Collette T. says:

What a DOUBLE DELIGHT to receive BOTH the Willard AND this post on this SPECIAL day 🙂 I’ve pre-ordered A FINE ROMANCE, and am thrilled with the PERFECT bookmark to complement it! Can’t think of anything that could TOP the JOY I’m experiencing – unless it would be to WIN a pre-publication copy of your LABOR OF LOVE 🙂 Thank you for who you are and for all you do to make this world a happier place XOXOXO

Thank you for letting us come on this journey with you, we are having a blast. It’s so exciting to get a little taste of what is going to be in the book. Love the cover, it’s so beautiful.

  82. today is the day for love…love of everyone and everything. i love…the heart shaped egg…the beautiful snow…the anticipation of a wonderfully warm and inviting new Susan branch book…and the chance to possibly win it! my guys (hubby and two sons) were greeted with cards and homemade chocolate candy (my grandmothers recipe). my little guy (8 yrs old) told me he loves all the things i make for him…knitted items to keep him warm, good dinners, but what he loves best is my homemade chocolate candy! he doesn’t know it, but that was my valentine gift from him…the simple love of and appreciation of all the things i do out of love for him and his brother, and their daddy. have a lovely and loving Valentines Day!!!

  83. I received your Willard on the first day and didn’t even get it read through before I was off ordering my copy of A fine Romance, and now I see you have Finished it. Yeaaaaaa.. Now your life can return to normal in time for Spring. 🙂 I did read the Willard through right after ordering you book and now this wonderful post. The Beatles Sang “All We Need Is Love.. but I think all we need is YOU. Congrats on the Finished book and THANK YOU FOR YOU and all the Joy you bring your Girlfriends.

  85. queenmum says:

Happy Valentine’s Day Susan and Joe! I cannot wait to read the new book, and…I think you SHOULD put the “tryout” page you showed in the last post in the book. I think that I love it because I wonder where the woman is heading (she reminds me a bit of myself), and the cat looks like our Mr. Magoo, who lived until the ripe old age of 19 and 1/2 years…we miss him dearly. If you include that page, I will think of him every time I read the book! Enjoy your day; I like being able to see how you have decorated for V Day.

Happy Valentine’s day to a true romantic. It takes one to know one! It was very fun to get a quick peek into A Fine Romance. The cover is beautiful and the book seems quite unique – photographs and information for practicality, hand written and with your lovely watercolor painting for whimsy. Perfect!
It passes the test of being beautiful and useful.;) I am making my hubby’s favorite chocolate chip cookies today, and for me, a massage!

  87. Rosanne (Oregon) says:

Oh yes, forgot to say, I pre-ordered your new book as soon as I read Willard!

Happy Valentine’s Day! Thank you for the recent Willard…I enjoyed reading about your book and wish I could get a copy right now! Thanks for the chance to win a copy!

  91. Carole Fuchs says:

I am so thrilled to have found your website. I have collected many items with your name on them over quite a few years (HOTH, Summer Book, Christmas Book, Recipe Binder, etc to name a few) and I shame myself to think I never searched your name online, considering I spend waaayy too much time online. Imagine my thrill when I saw your link on a friend’s facebook!
At least 10 years ago, I constructed about 10 totebags for friends, and for myself, that were pre-printed on fabric; they were a garden theme, and I hope I am correct in remembering that it was your artwork, which I have loved ever since. I lined them, and embellished them, and even had a couple requests for replacements when the first ones “wore out”. But I have not been able to find anything similar since then.
I, too, am a true anglophile, thru & thru, and have been fortunate to have visited England and Wales 3 times (still hoping for Scotland, too).
I am a quilter, also, and enjoyed the tour of your collection.
Thank you for sharing your lovely, and sometimes whimsical, world with us!
    Carole

  98. carol says:

willard arrived – love from the east! with arm in sling as i try to type, i can totally relate to the velcro sound. after smoked salmon on homemade bread for breakfast, and elevenses of pumpkin-from-the-garden bread, i have the perfect caretaker valentine. looking out our windows the view could be of the island, snow clouds blocking our CO mountain view. the only things missing are the cardinal valentines! thanks for the healing moments, in my case, wrist & mind!

Your books a great way to travel! Looking forward to it and the Willard. Cheers!
