HAPPY VALENTINE’S DAY!

Just a little Valentine mood MUSICA for some of my very favorite people . . . ♥

Yesterday most of our snow had melted, the grass was green, and I was having little pangs of Spring Fever . . . and today, as the sun began to come up, I looked outside to one of the prettiest snowstorms I’ve seen in a long time.

Just a beautiful day on the island.  My girlfriend Margot called at 6am to say, “You have to go look at the sunrise!”  One look and I burrowed right back into winter . . .

And now, the wind is blowing clumps of snow off roofs and trees and making it look like it’s snowing, but it’s not.

It’s just adding to the romance of an already romantic day…

As does this . . .

It’s the feet I love the most.

I took Joe his breakfast a while ago.  His Valentine’s present.

I made it in a cookie cutter.

Happy Valentine’s Day Girlfriends! I hope you’ve all received your Valentine Willards! Just as you read, we’re having a drawing for a pre-publication copy of my new book A FINE ROMANCE!

To be entered, just leave a comment (click on the tiny grey word “comments” just under this post). Sometime after the 20th, Vanna, our resident chooser-in-chief, will pick the winning name! When the book comes in, I’ll sign it and send it to the lucky winner. Until then, especially for today, I’m sending you virtual chocolate kisses and red roses and hope (sweetheart or no sweetheart, no one needs a sweetheart to celebrate Valentine’s Day) that your day includes something special just for you. xoxo Make all your Valentine dreams come true no matter what and be your own darling sweetheart!  Love you, THANK YOU!  I’m thrilled about the book, you just have to know … yesterday, I wrote the ending and I made myself cry!  Thank you for joining me on this book-writing adventure! xoxo P.S. Just in case you need it, you can view WILLARD here!

Happy Valentines Day! Your blog and Willard has LOVE written all over it. I have to get back to work, but I am making your stuffed pork chop recipe for dinner tonight, such a fabulous meal, my mouth is watering as I think about it. I would love to win your book, but I’m pre-ordering too, can’t wait, the months fly by so fast it will be in our hands before we know it. Thanks for the jolt of JOY.

  2. Suzanne says:

    Happy Valentine’s Day Susan!
I am so excited for the book, it looks like it is going be so beautiful, with so much information and detail. It’s like giving birth, something you and Joe created with your very romantic trip! I would so love to win that very special book as I know how much of yourself and the love you put into it. Willard was great and I can’t wait to try those recipes! Thanks Sue! ~ East Longmeadow, Ma.

Happy Valentine’s Day, Susan! you’ve made everyone so happy with the enchanting Willard and all of the excitement surrounding your new book…we all feel a part of it! What more could a person ask than to bring happiness to others? I have ordered a book for myself and one for my daughter – how special..lucky us!

  5. Pamela Jewett says:

    Hi Susan,
Loved the new Willard…it was filled with so much romance! We, us two, my honey and I, are celebrating by picnicing in front of the fireplace. Even though it is chilly outside and there are no flowers blooming. Doesn’t matter. What does is that we are together. I am so looking forward to your book. The small “teases” we have seen are delectable. Definately a cumfy chair, tea drink’in, kind of read.
Happy Valentine’s Day to you and Joe.
    xoxo Pam

  6. Gail Rose says:

  7. kristin headlee says:

    Susan,

I used your bookmark for a Valentine for my husband. My printer is black and white so I colored it with colored pencils and wrote all over the back of it and left it on the mirror while he was in the shower. He enjoyed it and I received a romantic big kiss in the return. How lovely! Speaking of lovely…I so enjoyed the pictures, every one. thank you.

  8. Debbie P ~ Weedsport, NY says:

How do I love thee? Let me count the ways…
I love: your child-like desire to HAVE FUN, your amazing talent both as an artist and a writer, your compassion, your spunk, your ability to always see the bright side of life, your sweet voice, your life-giving, uplifting spirit, your humor, your common sense, your generosity….
    Need I go on?
I just Love you, Susan Branch!
    Happy Valentine’s Day!

  9. Barb from Ohio says:

Happy Valentine’s Day! What a double treat; I got my Willard this morning and found this update on your blog on the same day! Really enjoyed the special Valentine edition of Willard, and am so glad the book is almost done. I pre-ordered “A Fine Romance” yesterday after I saw a hint on your twitter that it was available to order here. Something to look forward to this fall. I love all the pictures from the book and know it’s going to be wonderful. Thanks so much for sharing your traveling adventures in England with us. You and Joe are so blessed to have been able to live out your dream. Have a great Valentine’s day!

  10. Lynn says:

Beautiful post as always and I hope you and Joe have a very special day. I haven’t received Willard as yet either and I keep looking for it. Your new book looks so special – would love to add to my collection.

  11. Wanda says:

I get a rush for daily life as I read your stories or recipes! Today on Valentine’s Day I was particularly moved by your heart shaped egg you made for Joe! An egg which is so ordinary you made so extraordinary that it has inspired me with little ideas for the rest of the day! But, that is the gift you always give to me whenever I pick up one of your books or look at any of your good works! I have been on a cleaning out binge of my house and much to my surprise I found a Susan Branch treasure of two recipes I clipped out of Country Living magazine in 1987 and 1988! So I hope Vanna picks me to win! I am so excited about the new book. I love England and romance too.

  12. Bobbie G says:

I just read my Willard and can’t wait for my book! I have always had a fascination with UK because my mother had a pen pal from UK, Mags, from WWII until my mother’s death in 2003. They came to visit us in the US and my parents visited them several times in England. I will probably never get to the UK in person, but, as always, you bring things to life! Plus I am a History junkie, so I look forward to being an armchair traveler in your grand adventure. Thanks for compiling and sharing!

  13. Bonnie L says:

    Dear Susan,
Valentine WILLARD arrived in my mailbox today…..Thank You!
And, I was so surprised to see a Valentine Day blog from you, too! 🙂
Such nice surprises on a rainy, chilly Valentine’s Day!
I try at least one new recipe a year (they are usually the dessert ones!) and this year I am thinking it will be the toffee pudding…….looks and sounds delicious!
Have a cozy, comfy, Happy Valentine’s Day! XOXO

  14. Gail in N.H. says:

What a sweet Valentine breakfast! I love the pictures of you and Joe. I’m looking forward to a new Willard!

  18. Cris says:

LOVE LOVE LOVE my Willards!! You are so incredibly talented! THANK YOU for sharing your gift with us! I feel like I live vicariously through your writings & paintings!

  19. Barbara Farber says:

Happy Valentine’s Day to us all! Your pictures from landscapes to table settings, drawings and words are always romantic and inspiring. Not so sure I’ll make heart shaped eggs, but I will set a table with elegant dishes, silverware, tablecloth, napkins and candles! The simple things in life are the best – thank you! Think I’ll have a cuppa tea in my Bridgewater Pottery polka dot cup right now and read more of your blog. Too bad I don’t have any scones…..guess I’ll hafta substitute a piece of rum cake.

  20. Jana says:

Oh happy day! I confess: Willard’s arrival topped the visit by the President of the United States to the pre-school right at the end of my street where I take my daily walk. I made a cup of tea and sat down to read Willard while neighbors scurried down to the park for a glimpse.

I’m pre-ordering copies (plural) of the book. Cannot wait to savor every nook and cranny of every page very s-l-o-w-l-y. The blog-along as you’ve been writing it has been heaven to share in … thank you, thank you, thank you … for being YOU-WONDERFUL-YOU and for the comfort and joy you bring by sharing so authentically your “daily round.”

Big red hearts of love and joy for Valentine’s Day!
    Jana

    • Carrie says:

      Hi Jana,

Love Willard. Love Susan Branch oodles. Would have traded places with you in a minute to see President Obama, fortunate neighbors!

      Happy Valentine’s Day!

  21. Kay Lloyd says:

Happy Valentine’s Day! I have read parts of your blog almost every day this winter- Certainly a wonderful way to add a burst of delight into the day! Thank you for your beautiful artwork and thoughts! I would like to win the book. Since discovering you online, I have found your other books and love them! Your writing is joyful.

  22. Mona says:

I am SO looking forward to A Fine Romance. I’ve always wanted to go to England and not just for a few days–for a couple of months like you did. Your book will be the only way that is going to happen for me so I thank you in advance! ~_~

  23. Jane S. says:

Happy Valentine’s Day! I’m so excited about your new book I can hardly stand it. My first trip to England was in 2002 and I spent a few days in Yorkshire and then a week in Stratford-upon-Avon. It was heavenly, really the trip that memories are made of. That’s why I’m looking forward to your book. I love reading about and seeing photos of other people’s trips!

Cat feet are too cute! 🙂

  24. Kim says:

My daughter told me about the actress/comedienne Amy Pohler’s brilliant idea for “Gal-entine’s Day”, for all girlfriends, to be celebrated on February 13 th. Don’t you just love the idea, as well as the wonderful wordplay? We’re all happily anticipating your newest book, Susan ~ Meanwhile, I can’t wait to hear who wins the drawing for your autographed pre-pub copy! Hope springs eternal (and possibly a little selfishly?) that Vanna will draw my name! (That old Vicki Carr song keeps running through my mind: “Let It Please Be Me”!) Happy Valentine’s Day to All!

  25. Katherine M. in Austin says:

As always, I love your blog entry. Happy Valentine’s Day to you and your love!
And, of course, I would LOVE to win the book.

  26. Laura Ann in Vermont says:

Thank you, Susan, for the sunshine and joy in every one of your posts! You help make winter more bearable.

  27. Mary Brehm says:

Hi Susan! I am new to your blog! i just love everything about it! It always makes me smile and i always feels so happy when you post something new. We are having pink heart shaped pancakes for supper in honor of Valentines day. My two daughters age 22 and 19 will be here to celebrate. I always made them pink pancakes when they were little. It doesn’t take much… a couple of contruction paper hearts, some pretty paper chains a voila, instant celebration. The simple things are what’s always best. A very Happy Valentines Day to you.
P.S. I signed up for my first Willard, I can’t wait to see it : )

  28. Linda Kostecki says:

I just sat and cried at this post on Valentine’s Day, thinking I wouldn’t acknowledge this day as my husband has been laid off for 3 1/2 months and is so downhearted and feeling helpless so all this love and reading gave me a warm fuzzy with my morning tea. It was such a blessing to me as you always are. How timely and funny too as we’ve just finished watching The Tudors, World Without End, Game of Thrones and Elizabeth 1&2!! And….waiting to find out more….in the past year my family members working on our ‘tree’ have found an “Earl” !!!! Isnt that toe-tickling!!!!! I am excited beyond words for the release of your book. I thank God for you and the blessings you are to others and hope you continue to be richly blessed.

  29. Karen Connor says:

What a wonderful post. You have inspired me to dig out my Valentine’s decorations and decorate my house again. Thank you for giving me the “nudge” to get going and enjoy these festive days. I needed that. I even got a box of chocolates from a coworker. I think this thing is catching!
Kisses to the kitties and Petey too. Enjoy the day with Joe and congrats on your new book. I’m so excited!!!!

  30. Angie S says:

I can’t wait to see the book and would LOVE to be the winner – to relive our virtual trip! Not really expecting that to happen, but, it’s worth a try… Hoping everyone is having a much happier Valentines Day than I … Love to all!

  31. Charlene says:

I just pre-ordered your book too! Thank you Sue for the lovely Willard and blog post today. I so enjoy your posts! Happy Valentines Day!

  32. CarolK (NJ) says:

Wahoo! I finally got on your blog. I tried this morning but the whole world must have been trying to do the same. At that point there were 50 replies, now its over 200! That’s what happens when you are so popular, they jam up the internet. LOL Love your blog today, Happy Valentine’s Day. I’m making red velvet cake today. I’m so disappointed though, I had extra so I slathered crisco in little heart shaped tins and poured in the cake mix. Long story short, all the little cakes stuck to the tins and had to be pryed out. Boo Hoo Now I’ve got crumb cake. Maybe next time I’ll pay attentionn to the recipe and also put parchment paper in the bottom of everything. Valentine’s hugs from NJ. Now I need to find out where I get on the pre-order list for A Fine Romance. P.S. Did you know that there was a Brit-com years ago starring Judy Dench and her husband entitled A Fine Romance?

  33. Gerry says:

    -Karen

  36. Sue says:

Happy Valentine’s Day! How exciting that you are finished! It has to be like letting go of a child when they first leave the house without you – knowing you have to let go, but wanting that connection to stay in your palm! I can’t wait to see/read it. I have moments every so often when I start on one of your books, read it front to back and then pick up another one and read it also. The avalanche starts! Can’t wait to add this to my pile! Hope you have a lovely day. It is beautiful here in So Cal – about 70 and blue skies! Who can complain???

    Happy Valentines Susan,

Just finished reading all the wonderful things you’ve told us about your new book and of course your memories of England.
My husband and I celebrated Valentines Day this week by having Windsor Tea aboard the Queen Mary in Long Beach. It was wonderful and brought back many loving memories of England. My daughter and I visited England a couple of years ago and your new book will remind us, in full color, of all our wonderful memories of the glorious countryside. Thank you for bringing us back to England with your new book. I am looking forward to reading it.

  48. Heather says:

Love love LOVE reading your posts and your “Willards”! Can’t wait to read the new book. I lived in England when I was 11 — my parents rented a 400-year old stone cottage with a thatched roof, right down the street from the ruins of Lady Jane Grey’s castle — and have been an ardent Anglophile ever since. Happy Valentine’s Day to talented, delightful YOU (and your sweetie)!

  49. Barbara says:

  51. Deb from Dixie says:

    Happy Valentine’s Day! ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥
Cheers to Susan….what a journey filled with love and romance….the adventures in England….and then the adventure of writing about it all….and to finish the last pages just around Valentine’s day……well, just has to mean, extra magic!

I feel like us girlfriends have been given such a special gift to travel with you…and then cheer as you gave us updates, we are so excited for you……and we can’t wait to swoon over every page of the book!

Today especially, I want to thank you from my heart…..I know I have tried to express this to you in some of my comments before….and hope you know how you have touched so many of us deeply. For me, many days when I feel so depleted care giving, thinking I have given everything and still face so many challenges…..I read the blog, and my spirits are lifted….your kindness and light renew and remind us, that it is the little things that make a difference, that simple joys should be cherished…..and every day presents an opportunity to be grateful……..and that touches my heart.

Interacting with you and the girlfriends…is such a gift….sometimes we laugh, sometimes we cry….sometimes we remember things from our past, we thought we had long forgotten; sometimes we learn something new….and we share with each other, and support each other…..and we look forward to each and every post.

So…..on this special day filled with the celebration of the gift of loving…..each other, our furry friends, our planet, our lives…….I am grateful for you, Susan….you are a true Valentine to us all.
    Hugs and ♥ ♥ ♥
    Deb

Sea Bass with a knob of butter mixed with chilli/dill.Dessert was a chocolate mousse followed by crackers and apricot cheese .Heart shaped chocolates and a glass of Merlot finished it off nicely. Did I slave all day? Are you kidding me? Marks and Spencers provided the feast and tasty it was too. 28 euro in total a snip at the price.(the brown bread was baked by me ) Would love to win a copy of your book .Joe knows it’s on my book wish list. Happy Valentines’ Day Sweet Susan – and much love to you and the love of your life – Joe……..
Love from cold and gray Cleveland, Ohio !

  76. Laura C. says:

Happy V Day to all! My husband and I are alot like you and Joe! Hopelessly still in love after 26 years! We are so lucky!

  77. Dinahsoar says:

I’d be thrilled to win your book! The feet–love them too…my daughter always thought her kitty’s feet smelled like crackers. Happy “V” day to you and Joe–you make such a cute couple!!…from the hills of TN.

  78. Kate says:

Oh, my husband would have loved that egg for Valentine’s Day. Unfortunately, he had to go to work before I woke up! Made him an angel food cake with strawberry whipped topping though. Would absolutely die if I won your book. Well, maybe not die because I really want to read it. I can’t wait until it’s available.

  79. Gloria Groza says:

Thank you Susan for a chance to win your new book! So excited for you! I have all your other books, so hoping I am the one Vanna picks! Have a wonderful Valentines Day! You are an inspiration to me in so many ways! My latest project is to find a Tuxedo Kitty – one that looks just like Jack would be wonderful! Been checking with the shelters, but so far no luck. The one closest to us told me that in a couple of weeks there will be lots of kittens that need homes so maybe just the right one is gonna be out there! Wish me luck! This is a big step as our last cat, a grey Tabby named Mazie disappeared and that was 6 years ago. I miss having a kitty so much!

  80. Barb Mc says:

Can’t wait to see the book. Am pre-ordering it for my daughter. Reading your blog always makes me feel happy. I also like getting Willard. It’s like a little letter from you to me. Thanks for taking/making the time for both.

  81. Jan from Northern CA says:

Happy Valentine’s Day to two of the most romantic people!! Thank you for all the inspiration you two give. It reminds us to enjoy each and every day and most of all, each other. My husband and I have been married 37 years, and we still give each other cards and a big kiss on Valentine’s Day. We may even get to dinner tonite. I have a pile of cards we have given each other through the years, and laughingly told him the other day, “We should just go through it and pick out a favorite and give it to the other one again!!” Some are just so good. Well, stay warm out there. It’s supposed to maybe get to 70′ here in Northern CA, but we have our wind today…ugg. Makes the wind chimes sing, good thing. Please let Vanna know that I would love to have a signed copy of your book. I also hope that you will be stopping somewhere near in Northern CA when you do your tour. I would hope that CA is on your list…..knowing that you used to live down near SLO. I do have a friend in Morro Bay….hummmm, good reason to visit if you’re going to be touring close by. Well, thank you so much and enjoy your Valentine’s Day!!
    Cheers,
    Jan from Northern CA

Oh dear, I wrote a few comments and I think I erased them by accident! So I will try to remember what I first wrote! LOL I loved the heart egg! You turned an ordinary daily egg into something extraordinary for a Valentine’s Day gift for Joe. You inspired me with that as you always do. I get a rush for daily life from reading things you write or looking at any of your books or other good works of yours! I have been on a cleaning out binge in my house and the other day I ran across two Susan Branch treasures of recipes with art work in a 1987 and 1988 Country Living magazine! I love them so much I am going to frame them. I hope I win the new book but if not that will be okay as I have pre-ordered it and just can hardly wait. I love England and romance too!

  83. Sharon says:

Had trouble leaving a comment but I persevered! Would love a copy of your new book. Hope I win!

  84. Jan says:

Happy Valentines Day! What a wonderful post and I loved the “Willard” that I opened this morning first thing! I’m so blessed by you!

  85. Lisa from CT says:

Hi Susan, Happy Valentine’s Day. I already pre-ordered A Fine Romance, but please, please enter me in the drawing. I would love to have 1 to give away. Thank you!!!

  86. elizabeth says:

I really think that “A Fine Romance” is going to become a bedside table book. One too precious to read and place in a book case…..one that sits close by and is there in the middle of the night when one can’t sleep, or if you just want to spend a few minutes looking at beautiful pictures and drawings, just because. Thank you.

  87. Mary Daly says:

Thank you Susan for all your hearts year around not only on Valentines D

  88. Gloria Dotzler says:

Susan , I think you a romantic at heart, even when it’s not Valentine’s day. You and Joe are meant for each other, I think he’s as romantic as you. I would absolutely love to win an autographed copy of your book, so Vanna be good and draw my name.
I spy a reallly cute bookmark on your shelf, the one with the wooly sheep wearing his Union Jack bandana. Does that come with the book or will you share it with us sometime?
Lucky you to have another snowstorm, in my part of the world (southern Minnesota) we have had more freezing rain than snow. Not so much fun trying to keep upright.
Happy Valentines Day to you, Joe and the kitties.

Your creativity always amazes me and also reminds me of my mother. You are blessed to have the energy and time for such amazing creativity. Between home-schooling my son and trying keep up with everything that needs to be done around the house, I have little time for anything else. Your posts are a refreshing break from reality. It brightens my day. Thank you.
