Guess where we are?

Hi Everyone!  Guess where we are?  Here’s a hint:  MUSICA

New York

Yes, New York! This is the view from our room. It thrills the cockles of my heart.

anaffairtoremember

This was probably my first awareness of the Empire State Building. I watched this movie about a thousand times long before I ever saw New York in person. An Affair to Remember.  Cry your eyes out.

Our room is so comfortable!  We got here last night and I watched the Invasion of Normandy (OMG) under a blanket (a true nap blanket, came with room, on bed below) on that sofa while Joe sat next to me studying up on where we’re going to eat today!

Isn’t it just wonderful?  I love New York. Growing up I never imagined I would be the type to go to New York.  I was more the type to camp in Yosemite.

New York

Every window comes with a view.  See those cabs?  We’ll be getting into one of them this morning to careen wildly through the streets (because that’s what you do) to BEA, Book Expo America, at the Javits Center where we’ve been invited to sign Our book, “A Fine Romance” in the Baker & Taylor booth. So excited.

New York

We’re in the “Murray Hill” area of Manhattan, I’m sure some of you know where that is.  Lexington and 37th, lots of pre-war brick buildings, a real neighborhood with old trees.

The view from the bed. It’s really there!

Beautiful!

They call New York “America’s Home Town” and this strikes me as one of the reasons why, there’s a lot to love in this beautiful city.

But of course, we take “real” home along with us wherever we go.  I’m sitting here having tea this morning, listening to this musica, writing you and about to put pink polish on my fingernails.

Good Morning!

One more picture from the room with a view early this morning.

But, I hear you say, what about the kitties?

Love

Elizabeth & Diana

Never fear.  Girlfriends Elizabeth and (her cousin and best friend) Diana are visiting the island from California, working on Elizabeth’s new house, staying in my house and on the job for Kitty Love.  Kitties will be properly spoiled while we are away.

peanut butter cookies

I did my part and made Peanut Butter Cookies so no one would starve.  And this recipe has no flour ~ it’s so easy, I thought you might like to have it (so easy I memorized it! That should tell you something.) . . . preheat oven to 350°.  There are only 4 ingredients: 1 egg, 1 tsp. vanilla, 1 c. sugar, 1 c. peanut butter.  Lightly beat egg and vanilla together, whisk in sugar, then peanut better; mix well.  Roll into 1″ balls, place about 2″ apart on ungreased cookie sheet, press with fork to make tine marks across dough.  Bake 10-12 min until golden around edges. Cool on waxed paper. Makes 2 dozen.

Don’t worry, I haven’t forgotten our June celebration.  We’ll be celebrating five years with FOSB, Friends of Susan Branch, I love new yorkwith our wonderful Facebook Friends, and three years for my dear and darling Blog  Girlfriends with a very fun giveaway that I think everyone will like, quilters and non-quilters and just regular people.  I want to be at home where I can wrangle the comment section better than I can from here . . . so just a few more days.  Tell your quilter, sewing, or quilt-loving friends.  And Have a lovely day everyone.  Wish us luck at the Javits Center!  Love you! 1. Joan in Texas says:

New York looks so cozy. I love how you know to share with us even the smallest details so that we can feel like we are there with you. Amazing how the trees on the streets thrive and provide beauty amongst all the concrete. We are having a glorious Spring in North Texas. Rain finally and unusually cool days here lately. Makes me think what Spring must be like in your neck of the woods.

  2. Lynn McMahon says:

~ Good Morning ~ How fun! ~ Enjoy your visit to the Big Apple ~ Thanks for taking us along!! ~You and Joe are quite the tour guides! ~ Have a safe trip! ~

  3. Kathy G. says:

Good morning Susan! Have a wonderful day. I work in a library and deal with Baker & Taylor often. Great people! Maybe I can bribe them to sell me a signed copy of your book (which I am in the middle of reading for a second time)! Have plenty of cups of tea throughout the day (damp and dreary here in Jersey). I’m about 2 hr. drive south of you today. Have a wonderful dinner in the city tonite.

    • sbranch says:

You probably can, they love library people! Our sky is blue now. Still chilly, but sunny.

  4. Chris Wells Knickerbocker, W TX says:

Oh Wow, New York City! Isn’t it beautiful? But just to visit, I wouldn’t want to live there. I’m a country girl at heart. But when I was 19 I lived for a short time in Upper Nyack and traveled to the city often. It seems like a lifetime ago. Ha I guess it was!
Give my regards to Broadway, and have a great time at the Book Expo. And be sure to tell us about the food! I’m sure Joe is picking great places to eat. The best food in the world is in NYC.
Hi Elizabeth! Hi Diana! Have fun with the kitties and be sure to give kitty kisses daily.

Love from a very rain soaked West Texas….7.85 inches over Memeorial Day Weekend. It was a blessing!
    Chris

  5. martha says:

New York! Love the City, but I am always ready to come home after a few days of museums, music, and goooooooooooddddddd ffooooooddddd! Have fun and take LOTS of pictures!

    • sbranch says:

Where’s your favorite place to eat?

      • Sweet Sue says:

My, my it sounds like you are definitely getting the “royal” treatment while in New York! A nap blanket….how cozy!
If you are in the Murray Hill area of Manhattan the best restaurants by far (in my humble opinion) are:

        1. For Breakfast…..NY Bagels….587 1st Ave., (212) 725-3777……fantastic bagels…..my favorite is the egg bagel with light veggie cream cheese :-)!
        2. For Lunch……2nd Ave. Deli….162 E. 33rd St., (212) 689-9000……definitely the best pastrami on rye anywhere in the city :-)……great selection of other deli favorites as well!
        3. For Dinner and/or Dessert…..The Shakespeare…24 E. 39th St.,(646) 837-6779..an authenitic British Pub right there in the city :-)……most delicious apple crumb with sour cream and ice cream ….a must have dessert….also great selection of beverages….whatever suits your fancy….

Enjoy the book signing and your time there together! Imagine being able to see the Empire State Building from your hotel window! Wonderful!
Girl Kitty and Jack look like they are in good hands and yes, I think they will get spoiled while you are away….yet they will miss you I’m sure and be happy to see you when you get home. Can hardly wait for your upcoming celebrations of your blog and facebook site and multiple drawings of such magnificent items like homemade quilts! Talk about spoiling you sure spoil us girlfriends!
        Have a joy-filled day!
        Sweet Sue

        • sbranch says:

We ate next door to the Shakespeare . . . at the Peacock! It was fantastic, I think it’s owned by the same people. But I didn’t see the apple crumb dessert there. Must go back! 🙂

          • Sweet Sue says:

Great! I forgot about the Peacock also being a British restaurant. Yes, the Peacock and the Shakespeare are both owned by the same person. The Peacock does have a Rhubard & Apple Crumble although not served with the Sour Cream Ice Cream yet it is the Shakespeare that has what they actually call the Pear & Apple Crumble with Sour Cream Ice Cream. If you have a chance to go back to that area and dine at The Shakespeare you will really enjoy this most scrumptious dessert. In any event NYC has so many fine restaurants that it boggles your brain just as the city itself does. Hope book signing went well and that you have had a most wonderful time! 🙂

          • sbranch says:

It does boggle the brain. Today we went to Les Halles for lunch. YUM! Profiterole for dessert.

      • martha says:

ANY pizza place! Especially if the guys are tossing the crust hahaha

Believe it or not, I also enjoyed the Museum restaurant at the Met. Brie? At a museum? What’s not to like!??

        • martha says:

OH! Forgot to add! If you have time, drop by Purl Soho! OMGoodness! Such delish fiber and fabric! A WALL of Liberty fabric to drool over is worth the trip!

  6. Lori says:

Have fun – I know you will! Thanks for the glimpse of NYC. Oh and one of my favorite movies too. ” If you can paint, I can walk.” Sniff, sniff, sniff.

  7. Elaine in Toronto says:

All the more reason to love New York – you and Joe are there. Have fun. So much to see and do and shopping – oh the shopping! Girl and Jack are in good hands. You’ll be back before they know you’re gone. Last time I was in New York was 1967 when I was 21. I’m sure it’s changed! Safe trip home.

  8. I had that same view from about 10 blocks south, when I was in NYC last summer. It is just a magical place in the summer time, especially in the early morning and I can’t wait to go back! Enjoy your lunch – so many wonderful restaurants to try 🙂

  9. What a great room with a view. Very romantic! I love that Emma came along to make it feel homey. Oh, yes, please share your food experiences – everything from the street vendors to the lovely restaurants. NY is for lovers – not dieters! You’ll walk off any unneeded calories. Be on the lookout for Kari Bradshaw for me too – you’ll recognize her by her five inch Manolo’s and her pink tutu. =)

    • sbranch says:

Don’t worry, if I see her, I’ll be sure to let you know! Wasn’t that show the perfect ad for NY!?

  10. Sue Rideout from Maine says:

Wow! Now you are in my old stomping grounds!!! Don’t forget to catch a show on Broadway, take a stroll down 5th Ave. and eat a hotdog at Nathan’s!!
    Have fun!

    • sbranch says:

It looks like a perfect day for strolling and hot dog eating!

      • Lorraine from White Plains, NY says:

Forget Nathan’s (unless you’re at Coney Island) and go to Gray’s Papaya at Broadway and 72nd!

  11. I have always wanted to visit NYC….but at Christmas to see all the eye candy!! I did get to see the NYC sky line when my youngest son got married across the river in NewJersey five years ago. Have fun!!

  12. Betty says:

Wonderful to see the Empire State building from your room! One day I would love to visit New York. I’ve seen so many movies set in that amazing city.
All the best for your book signing. I know everyone will love your book:)
    Betty (Melbourne)

  13. Robin Murray says:

First of all have fun and best of luck at the Javit Center! You will be amazing! Love NYC, have not been but a handful of times (3) but love the hassle bustle, sounds, people and really everything. My first time seeing Time Square, I swear my knees buckled!!! I was so blown away.
Enjoy all the excitement my dear, xoRobin
Please sign me up for the giveaway!

  14. Karen Holly says:

    Good morning, Susan!
Enjoy your delicious tea before you and Joe head off to the Javits Center for your book signing. It is good to know that Girl and Jack are in the best of hands while you and Joe are in New York. Have a great time, knowing all of the Girlfriends are there with you in spirit!

  15. Winnie Nielsen says:

So exciting to be in Manhattan with that view! Wow, what fun plus I love that you have another book signing for OUR book in the Big Apple! Whoop!! Let us know what Joe came up with on “must try” restaurants during your visit too. Can’t wait to see the pictures of your adventures.

    Have a wonderful visit!

  16. Debbie in Goshen says:

Oh, the fun you will have and the “places you will go”! The Murray Hill area is dear to my heart as I spent so much time there — 39th & Lex — back in the 80’s. Such a wonderful neighborhood. Of course, I’m sure it has changed many times over since I was last there…but the essence of the area must have remained the same. Your comments give me that sense. Thank you for the memory! Enjoy your time in NYC.

  17. So exciting to peek out your window! You will find the “cozy” little places in NYC. Enjoy meeting so many people at the Book Expo. It’s just perfect for our newest publisher! Enjoy every minute, Susan and Joe!
    Sending hugs,
    Dawn

  18. katherine says:

Thanks for this wonderful NYC post! I too never thought I would enjoy visiting big cities but I love them…..my husband always takes me with him when he travels to conferences. They are usually in big cities like Boston or Washington DC! So he goes to meetings while I explore the city. I never thought I would be able to walk by myself in the city either…but I do and it always amazes me that a small town Nebraska girl now small town PA girl has a bit of big city girl in her!! LIFE is Wonderful in its contrasts! But there is no place like home and wonderful furry friends just waiting for you to come home make it all the better! Cookies look great…I think I will try them soon! By the way…we have a baby duck in our house at the present time. The kids named him Mighty. He got left behind or was a late hatch as his mother and siblings were already down at the creek when I found him. We all became smitten!

  19. Cecelia says:

    Susan,
    Even your friends are cute!!

  20. Ann says:

Oh Susan, thank you for another wonderful blog post. This one brings back very happy memories for me of our trips to New York. Surely, one could never, ever get tired of visiting such a wonderful city. All I can say is, enjoy, enjoy, enjoy!
    With love from,
    Ann in Thame xx

  21. Dinahsoar says:

How wonderful, in NYC w/ a view of The Empire State Building!!! Wish I were there w/ you! I love the neighborhoods of NY, w/ the brownstones and old trees; like you see in the movie “You’ve Got Mail”. If I were rich, NYC is where I’d want to live, at least part time, the rest of the time I’d live somewhere in New England, preferably in the fall when it is so beautiful. A house on your island would be grand too! Kitties look like they are enjoying themselves and obviously in good hands. Have fun! from the hills of TN

  22. Cindy Maulin says:

hi susan!!! a delightful morning post .. shared the lovely Musica with my husband as we were both commenting how ” they don’t make ’em like that anymore!” I absolutely love the view from your room and from the movie… some things remain classic … thank goodness…I think if we re-arranged that room, it would be right out of the movie…so Mamhattan …lap blanket and all!!!! I am always carting around bits of home when we travel too., mug, wine glasses, special pillows … Used to drive Jerry crazy… but he has seen the light and appreciates the coziness it brings… Looks like you are in for a grand time in the Big Apple…..

  23. N Jean says:

I love the view from your window in New York. It is so America!

  24. Brenda says:

You’re in my favorite city on earth. We’ve visited about 15 times all the way from SK, mainly because we are theater nuts, but everytime I find new coffee shops, tea shops, vintages stores, little hidden parks and all the other glorious places the city offers. And the people! The people! No city has friendlier people.

  25. Mary Whiting says:

    Good Morning,
I am so glad you are loving in NYC. My husband and I have a Christmas tradition each year. We fly in to New York for four days and immerse ourselves in all the New York holiday offerings: Broadway plays, The Rockettes at Radio City, the Rockefeller Center Christmas tree, dinner at 21 and The Four Seasons, and, of course, Tiffany at Christmas. It’s magical. Enjoy, Susan!

  26. Marty from NYC says:

Welcome to New York! Once more, I am 22 stories up and not too far from the Javits Center. Wish I could spend the day looking for the two of you!

You are so close to the Morgan Library and Museum if you are by your hotel, maybe go to their Restaurant for lunch. The Morgan is small and unique in its treasures and a fascinating place to visit- even when there may not be too much time.

To foodies like You and Joe, I would recommend a stroll along Ninth Avenue -Greek, Italian and all other manor of treats, goodies to take home from all over the world.

There are so many choices for food, but we like Shun Lee- East side or West side for delicious dishes that make every day feel like a celebration. Try the Peking Duck, Mandarin Shrimp, dumplings.

If it is on while you are here, you must go to the Union Square Market. The most fresh and unusual produce from local farmers-and plenty of good restaurants near the area as well.

I guess if there is one place that I hope that you could go, it would be Central Park- so full of beautiful trees, shrubs, flowers (See especially Shakespeare’s garden), ponds. The perfect place to people watch and catch the flavors of NY- Sedate older couples, frisby playing young people and dogs, steel band drummers, big city hustlers, bikers, runners, people laying in the grass and catching the warmth of the sun, babies in their strollers. the carousel, ball parks , maybe a kite flyer or two-you cannot beat the variety.

I hope that Joe has picked up a Zagat guide–perfect for selecting restaurants in any area that you will be in , and based on reviews by people (not critics) who have been there, with guidelines to atmosphere, service and price. Usually cannot go wrong when you find something in Zagat that appeals to you.

Have a wonderful time in our most wonderful City! Marty

  27. Lorie Hartsig says:

We were just in NYC last week. Walked the High Line and saw Beautiful on broadway. Always special when we go…..ENJOY!

  30. Lacy Joy says:

A trip to New York early one winter is when I first new I was in trouble with my then-friend, now-husband. We went with my sister and his brother, 4 friends adventuring the Big City. We stayed in the cramped extra bedroom of a friend in Brooklyn. While we walked through the streets and visited various shops and eateries, I knew my heart for him was turning. When we came around the corner of a building and saw the Empire State Building, he playfully grabbed my hand and tugged me along, excited to see this famous stucture.
And he never really did let go.
5 years later, we recently visited and got to spend time at the 9-11 Memorial.
New York with always be a treasure to us.
Enjoy your time there! It’s truly magical.

  31. Debbie says:

I lived in Manhattan for two years in the late 1970s when I was in grad school. I had no money and the city was not very safe at that time, but in spite of that, I loved it. Our neighborhood was friendly and the local diner & deli took care of the students and made sure we had enough to eat. Have a wonderful time in NYC!

  32. Elizabeth Healy says:

Thanks for sharing some of New York — I really love how you are able to find or create some beauty where ever you wander and share it so freely!

  33. Sandy says:

I am waiting with baited breath!!! I’m a quilter so I’m especially excited about your giveaway. Enjoy New York enough for the rest of us who will probably never see it and enjoy the book signings. Have a wonderful day Susan and Joe.

  34. Patty in Redlands says:

    Hi Susan,
Yay, NYC! Enjoy every moment there! I always feel like it’s Christmas morning when I’m in New York. Such excitement, so many “gifts” to experience. Thanks for bringing us along.

  35. These photos remind me of what is so fascinating about New York: having so many lives and stories all around you. I remember being there years ago and looking across the street at all the apartment windows and feeling so plugged into the human race, in a way I don’t in suburbia. Enjoy every moment!

  36. Nora Cavic says:

Have a grand time in the Big Apple!

  37. Shannon (Pennsylvania) says:

Fun place for breakfast…Ellen’s Stardust Diner on Broadway and 51st. Great place for tea…Laduree in Soho. Their macaroons are heavenly. They also have a shop on Madison Ave., but they don’t have sit down teas there. Have you picked a place for dinner? Hugs!

  38. mary says:

I love New York!! {and my preferred movie is You’ve Got Mail, a relative of An Affair to Remember 🙂 }. I think I fell in love with NYC back in the 60’s while watching That Girl. I wanted to BE Marlo Thomas! I thought she had the cutest mod clothes and apartment. So nice that you are having a book signing there, it’s very exciting! They will love your book! Perhaps you will share pics of the book signing and maybe more trip details….have fun!

  39. Patty from Michigan says:

Good Morning Susan and Joe! Love New York City. I, too, enjoy the camping life, but I fell in love with New York when my husband and I visited – 2 times. Beautiful view from your room. So romantic, right!!! I’m jealous of the ladies getting to take care of kitties. I would just love that job, anytime!!! One of my daughters is on a gluten-free diet, so we’ll have to give those yummy cookies a try! Enjoy your time in the Big Apple!!!!

  40. Jocelyn says:

Wonderful post! I was born right in the heart of Manhattan 🙂 Lived there until my early teens. I would love to go back and visit, as it has been many, many years since I’ve been there. Enjoy your time in the Big Apple.

  41. Vivian in TN says:

Taxi cabs in NY ‘careening wildly’ is absolutely correct. I haven’t ridden in them, but my husband and I were on a tour bus, and the taxis in front were so wild that in my frantic state I had almost pulled my husbands cardigan off his shoulder, just hanging on. haha No accidents luckily. I love to look at NY in movies or pictures, but being there takes courage for this small town gal.

Good luck today and hope everything turns out the way you would like.

  42. Susie says:

Susan, I love the view. I love NYC. I stay in an old hotel 1/2 block from times square…I love that old place, you could hear other people talking while you were in the bathroom, because of the old ductwork. So nice someone will entertain the cats while you are away. Blessings to you and Joe, xoxo,Susie

  43. Robyn Genau says:

    Dear Susan,
Lucky you! The only time I visited New York we were only able to drive around a short time. Did see Times Square. Love the pics. Have a good time! Robyn

  44. Mamey Brown says:

OH I LOVE NYC!! I’m about 4 hours north of you!! We visit at least a couple time a year. We must see my beloved NY Yankees and Derek Jeter!! I wish you a splendid time. One on my favorite places is STARDUST DINER. To be honest, it’s regular diner food, but the waitstaff sings and does little skits. It’s just really fun!! We used to go there late at night for dessert, after we saw a show or whatever the fun of the day was. If I’m not mistaken, I believe they are still open til around midnight….(way passed my bedtime nowadays but when you are in NYC, sleep isn’t needed!!!)
    ENJOY!!

  45. Doreen Strain (Florida) says:

Hi Sue…take it from a NY’er…you have to stop and get a pretzel from one of the street vendors. It’s going to taste better than any other pretzel you’ve ever had. I just love them. Miss NY so much. So different here in FL. Enjoy, and have a good time “people watching”! LOL! FOSB 4~Ever! ~ Doreen ~

  46. Vicki says:

I love the Spring time. I love New York. Now you put the two together..nothing better. Enjoy the day.

  47. Yvonne Shafer says:

Thanks for the eye candy look at NYC! Love your intimate views. I’m going to try your cookie recipe and am wondering at what temperature to bake them? Enjoy every minute of your trip!

  48. Lisa G. says:

There’s that tulip bowl again, the one I also have! It’s a great size and very cheery. Enjoy your New York time!

  49. What a beautiful view. I’ll be cheering you and Joe on while you are at the signing of “our” book! With a happy good morning from one with an almost view of Yosemite!

  50. carmel says:

If you and Joe have time, try Sara Beth’s restaurant for breakfast. How great is that for you both to be invited to the book signing. More proof of success! Couldn’t happen to two of the most wonderful people. Continue to enjoy the wonder and fun of New York! xoxo

  51. Wanda in Louisiana says:

Oh My !!! What fun you are having!!!! My husband and I LOVE to go to New York every year or two. Here’s a favorite eat place – Dean & Deluca (check your website for which location is close). They have awesome tea, sandwiches, etc. I know your book signing will be a great success – how could it not be with your adorable book that makes one wish to go right back to see everything possible in England. We were there last year, but didn’t have time to see enough! So fabulous! BUT, NYC – now that’s wonderful for sure!!! Got TKTS for a Broadway show? Hope you have time for that! Have an awesome trip!

  52. Fran says:

It’s been a long time since I was in New York City, but oh what a fun place to visit – the sights, sounds, and yes, the friendly New Yorkers. I hope to return one day, but will enjoy it now through your wonderful blog and photos. Good luck at your book signing and have a wonderful trip!! Looks like the kitties have friends to play with while your gone, so no worries!

  53. Chris says:

    “Give my regards to Broadway
    Remember me to Harold Square

That Sue and Joe are there……..”

    Oh, I LOVE NY!
    Have lots of fun, girlfriend!
    Chris in Florida

  54. Debbie Noyola says:

I have never been to New York myself. I must admit I’ve never had a strong desire to visit. That is until I read your wonderful blog & you ignited a desire in me to go there. I truly am a country girl at heart also, childhood years in Kentucky, but I’m adventuresome. I wouldn’t mind strolling the streets of New York & gazing upwards at all those amazing buildings. Well best of luck to you at the Javits Center. I hope you & Joe thoroughly enjoy your visit to the Big Apple. Be safe, your Northwest fan, Debbie.

  55. Rosanne Murphy (Oregon) says:

Oooooh, loved waking up this morning and finding myself in NYC!! Got to frolic there a few weekends in the 1970’s while a young, single girl working in D.C. What a treat for you and Joe to be there now in that wonderful room with a view. Have a fab, fun time!

  56. Nellie says:

Definitely wishing you lots of luck at the Javits Center. I’ve never been to New York. The thought of going is just a bit scary, though one of our daughters is heading there for a bit of vacation next week.

It’s difficult to see who would be the most spoiled – Jack and Girl Kitty – or the cat sitters! Luscious homemade peanut butter cookies! Yum! Plus that lovely home with the gorgeous views!

    xo Nellie

  57. LindaB says:

I make those cookies all the time. An absolute favorite at my house. Enjoy New York, Susan!! Can’t wait to hear all about it!!

  58. Have fun in NY! (Did you wave to me across the LI Sound?) Your view is spectacular and so perfect for you and Joe. Any place is an excellent place to eat in the city. I love Carmine’s (Italian). I would suggest going there right before you leave the city because you will have to take most of it home with you. No kidding. You will then be able to live off of that one meal for the next month. Delish! Jack and Girl Kitty will have a blast with your bffs. Everyone wins. Can’t wait to hear and see more of your Big Apple experience. Have fun! Be sure to eat a warm pretzel from a street vendor. And, oh, catch a slice of pizza somewhere, anywhere.

  59. Barbara Sturtz says:

What a view you have, Susan and the music makes it all the more romantic! I loved that movie when I was a young girl and it brought back a lot of fun memories of my own…..have fun in the Big Apple 🙂

  60. Debs OBrien says:

New York New York! Oh, how I loved my all too short a time in New York, just passin’ thru ~~~ I’ll never forget stopping {the car} to ask two adorable gentlemen for directions ~~~ and they were adorable ~~~ who nearly ended up having fisticuffs with each other because they couldn’t agree! They were so obviously BFF {is that how you say Best Friends For Life?} and you knew they’d be off for a coffee and putting the world to rights once more the moment I was out of site.

Oh, even though my heart is in the country, there is a beauty in every nook and cranny of cities, a different kind of beauty, you just have to look for it, and like all magic, it is there!

Enjoy your day, enjoy your time in New York New York, we’ll all be peeking over your shoulder, squished in to that taxi cab, lookin’ out the window!

Waving wildly from Across The Pond in west Wales! 😀 Debs xoxo

    • sbranch says:

When I came here the first time with a girlfriend, we drove into the city, but when it was time to go, we could not figure out how to get out. We asked directions from a cab driver, and he said, “Follow me!” And took us to where we needed to go. How about that!

  61. Dee Dee Osborne says:

Susan, so much fun waking up to your posting of your trip to New York. Our children gave us a trip to NYC for my birthday present this year and we are right in the middle of planning our trip for this September. Fun to see how excited you and the girlfriends are about visiting the City. Please pass along any and all tips for a successful visit. Loved peeking out your hotel room window! Think you two should make a career out of taking trips and writing books. Your excitement and enjoyment are so contagious! Continue having a wonderful time! Dee Dee Osborne (Carmel Valley, CA)

  62. Pam Higgins says:

Ooh! Love NYC! It is such a perfect place for a weekend get away! There is too much to see and do, so you leave knowing you have to return!
    Have a wonderful time! 🙂

  63. Carmenbea from Southern Oregon says:

OK…that’s it! Have seen that Peanut Butter Cookie recipe at least a dozen times, just gonna have to give it a try…just ’cause Susan said! So glad you are having fun in NY…too much city for me…lol!

  64. Vickie in Cleveland says:

Oh, how fun, and what romantic view. My husband’s cousin is there now, too. Hope you have a wonderful time. So glad the kitty babies are so well taken care of!

  65. Deb W says:

Oh!!! The bowl with the tulips!! It was made by the Anchor Hocking company (It may say Fire King on the bottom) in Lancaster Ohio, my hometown. 3 generations of my family worked there – truly a “company town.” Recently closed, suddenly and unexpectedly…..passing of an era. There are large salt and pepper shakers in that pattern that I have looked for for years…..and will probably not be able to afford when I find them. 🙂 Back then, we all grew up with kitchens, basements and attics full of that stuff.

My thought when I saw the photo of the hotel room – it may be comfortable, but so bare! I wondered if you travel with some of those 12 bags you took through England, in order to make your hotel room more like home. That was answered as I scrolled down…..leave it to Emma.

    • sbranch says:

Yes, we brought it all, this place does not look bare anymore! Toast crumbs everywhere!

  66. Janet in Rochester says:

What fun you must be having! As “eating cities” go, New York is [IMO] second only to my soul city Boston [third place is a tough call but I think I’d have to go with San Francisco]. There’s so much to choose from!! As tempting as it might be, try not to visit anywhere you’ve already been. And Sue, you could make wallpaper paste sound appealing, so I can’t wait to read about where you do go. PS – Jack may be black [and a little blue] and white when you get home – because isn’t Elizabeth the Jack-squeezer? Have fun in NYC!

  67. Lynn McCormack says:

    Love your blog!

  68. Lori C. says:

You’re Never Too Old For Fairy Tales – absolutely love it!
Susan – do you know (of if any of the girlfriends out there knows) if there is a radio station that you can subscribe to that carries all these old wonderful tunes that you let us listen to while we peruse your blog?
I have Sirius in my car – but I haven’t found anything that really matches.
    I so appreciate your help!

    • sbranch says:

I haven’t heard of anything matching either. Even though I have Tommy Dorsey radio on Pandora, it’s really not just Tommy Dorsey, they throw in lots of other things they “think” are the same, but to me, they aren’t. I think we may need to make our own playlists.

  69. Kathryn says:

Hey! Stop by my house, I’m right across the river in NJ!

Will you be in NYC tonight? There is a phenomenon called Manhattanhege. The sun will be setting right between the buildings at 8:18 pm. Look west down 42nd street. And a few others in that area. Beautiful sight!

  70. Lauren Naudain says:

Hi Susan….It’s so wonderful to be back in N.Y. through your magical eyes & heart. I grew up in New Jersey and my wonderful Aunt Florence took me on train trips to “the city” many times. I think the most memorable was to see “My Fair Lady” with Julie Andrews & Rex Harrison…I still get shivers thinking about it ! So back to reality… I am thrilled for you & Joe to be having this wonderful & richly deserved experience & you do not need luck….you will be swamped with admirers. Have a blast, Susan…..oh & thanks for the kitty reassurances…Elizabeth & Diana look like the perfect sitters!

  71. barbara miller says:

it has been a very long time since I visited new York city. the first time was my senior year in high school. went to united nations but the high light for me was the rockettes and the debut of ‘how to succeed in business without really trying’! have fun!

  72. Sue Francoeur says:

NYC is the best – have a great time and I KNOW you will be mobbed at Javits – everyone loves you and Joe!

    xo,
    Sue from Simi

  73. Barbara Kaplowitz says:

I am very glad that you & Joe are enjoying my city. I used to work at a company that was located at 38th St & Madison Ave back in the late ’70s. My son is at the expo today. Hubby told him to remember to look for Susan Branch for your mother. (I have your lst edition of A Fine Romance which was signed.) So if you see a young man in his late 20s with long sideburns & glasses & press credentials for Nerdvolution or The Fight Nerd (which are 2 of his websites), just say, “Hi, Matt!”. It would be great if he could do an interview & video with you. Be well, be
happy, enjoy Life! Best wishes, Barbara, NYC who lives in Queens

  74. Laura C says:

I just had a visit in NYC in April. I went with my daughter, her husband, their middle son (his special trip) and we went everywhere on the subway! A first for me. I almost felt like a real New Yorker. We bought our passes our first day and used them multiple times every day. We even went to Brooklyn for pizza and a trip out to the Statue of Liberty. My grandson was in heaven! Of course we also saw 3 Broadway shoes and took a Food and Culture tour near Little Italy. It was fabulous. I highly recommend these tours (there are several). Have a great time!

  75. Christine from Covina says:

Good Morning and how lovely. I am sure you will be a hit at Javits!!!
Have a most wonderful time!! Such a great friend, you always remember us!

  76. Sharon Suzanne says:

Oh! The view! I do hope you both have a grand time! I don’t envy you the taxi ride! Been there done that…and the buses, believe or not, are WORSE! Maybe you’ll get some nice sightseeing weather soon. Enjoy!

  77. Joy B says:

Love your room and the view! Have a wonderful time in New York. I wish I could be there, too – TWO of my favorite authors are signing books at the Javits Center tomorrow: you and Sharyn McCrumb. (And maybe others, I just don’t know of any more.)

  78. Cindy Zuch says:

Hope you are having a great time in NYC! Thank you for the peanut butter cookie recipe – I’m always looking for gluten-free recipes to make for my daughter! 🙂

  79. mari1017 says:

You do make New York sound wonderful, Susan! I rarely get there now, but my aunt lived on West 55th Street, across from LeBonne Soupe and a fabulous, the best! French bakery – it might have actually been called The French Bakery at the time 🙂 I think it’s gone now, but Le Bonne Soupe is still a wonderful place to catch a bite! labonnesoupe.com/

Best wishes for a continued fabulous time & a successful signing at the Javits – we are all pulling for you – it’s a wonderful book!!!

  80. Karen Saunders says:

My motto is you can just never have too many quilts!! They are so useful…need them for guests, they look great stacked, can sit on them for a picnic, use as a tablecloth….and more. Isn’t the Empire State Building the epitome of New York?? I wonder if it really lights up a heart on Valentines Day like it did with Meg Ryan in Sleepless in Seattle? (I want it to!) Isn’t it nice that your friend is buying a house on your island? How neat!!

    • sbranch says:

I have no doubt it does that, they turned it green last night!

Oh yes! The way I met Elizabeth was through friends, and soon after she bought my first house from me. We’ve been friends ever since. (No she doesn’t own it anymore.)

  81. Lee Rose says:

Will you have a chance to get to Tea & Sympathy? Love their Welsh Rarebit.

  82. Sherry Svoboda from Maryland says:

Hi Susan & Joe..you are so lucky to be in New York its a glorious place and so exciting I love it there. A great place to eat is “Sarge’s Deli” on 3rd Avenue they are known for their legendary and might I mention “huge” Corned Beef Sandwich’s to just die for and the place is so nostalgic and quaint. Enjoy your stay.

  83. Irene Talaasen says:

Wow! You get around! Such an honor for you doing the book signing there. And I loved your friends at the table taking care of Girl Kitty and Jack. The peanut butter cookies sound delicious; what a fun and easy recipe.
Have fun!! Are we in comments now for the quilting treasure giveaway?
    Hope so 🙂

  84. Paul says:

We just moved to 36th and Park Ave. in Murray Hill so welcome to the neighborhood. So glad you like NYC! It is a great place to visit and to live. Don’t forget to look for the Chrysler Building and the facade of Grand Central (42nd and Park). Both so beautiful.

  85. Janis says:

  88. salve says:

  89. Pat Mofjeld says:

Don’t know much about New York but want to know if Elizabeth and Diane would like to doggie-sit in Minnesota sometime…LOL! 🙂

  90. Sarah Maldonado says:

Well, what an absolutely perfect view! That’s just too sweet. And your Emma heart mug made me smile. I, along with the kitty-sittin’ Girlfriends enjoyed my breakfast on my Emma heart dishes! I eat my oatmeal in my heartbowl and have my tea in my “Darling” heart cup. It was so fun thinking all of us are doing the same. :-). Have fun in NYC!

  91. nancy says:

I love that Joe is researching places to eat. It’s comforting to know I’m not the only one who does that when I travel. Enjoy New York!

  92. Heartsdesire says:

Good luck at the Centre, and hope you get a chance to enjoy New York and perhaps do a bit of shopping. I’ve never been there, but maybe someday. Looks like the kitties will be well looked after, but I’m sure they will be very happy when you return.

  93. Gwen Barath says:

My first time in New York City was taking a group of exchange students to the Westminister Dog Show. Such a fun trip exploring museums and Central Park and of course the dogs. Hope you have fun loving the sites.

  96. Lorrie says:

Your lovely day in NYC is drawing to a close as I write this just after 1pm on the west coast. An Affair to Remember is one of my favourite movies. Sob. I’ve never visited NYC. Maybe someday. It’s not on my list of places I definitely want to go, but I love reading about it. Seems like a vibrant microcosm of the world.

  97. Cindy in CA. says:

Hi Susan! Try Katz’s Deli and enjoy a gigantic pastrami sandwich with all the fixins- to die for!! It’s also where a famous “When Harry Met Sally” scene was shot – ha! Must see a broadway show too… any of them will do 🙂

  98. Francine Werlinger says:

Ahhhhhh……what a life you sweet Sue!

  99. Gaili Schoen says:

if you have time, visit a wonderful restaurant my daughter manages at Park and 60th called Amali. If you ask for Kylie she will take good care of you. She’s a big fan of Susan Branch art!

I put it on our list (which gets longer by the second), but you tell her I said hello!

  100. Heather L. says:

New York and the Book Expo — what could be better??!!! (Well, maybe England) So happy for you!!!! I visited NYC properly for the first time three years ago, staying with a dear friend. I had to go back the next year. Last year I skipped because of our UK trip but I’m hoping to go again next year. I also never thought I’d be the type to LOVE NYC but it really is just an amazing place. Enjoy your time!!!!
