WE MADE IT HOME!

Yes, we made it home.  But I thought you might enjoy some New York MUSICA and a few big city scenes before we go back to small world reality.

going home

We caught the Island Home for our return trip on the MOST beautiful day.  I must say, the weather for our whole trip was brilliant!  Cool enough for a sweater, warm enough for basking.

leaving The City

Here we are tooling along, we’ve just turned out of the city onto the FDR Drive going north past the east river toward Connecticut.

going home

Lots of I-95, the Connecticut Turnpike is very very ugly, which I’ve always found hard to understand because Connecticut is so beautiful, how did they let this hideous road run right along next to the shore???  I don’t know! (venting time)  But since Joe was born and raised in Connecticut he has this other “secret” road to take us on instead.  It’s not a very big secret, and it’s not a very big road, it’s called the Merritt Parkway.

Merritt Parkway

It’s famous for the beautiful bridges and overpasses built beginning in the 1930’s. Each one is designed in a different architectural style, all designed by the same person, and all built by the WPA — which it would be nice if we had again!  This country got some of it’s prettiest roads and buildings because of the WPA.

WPA

My favorite part about the bridges on the Merritt Parkway is that they are all too low for trucks. Wizardry in bridge building is what I call it. Hence, no trucks on this road!

Merritt Parkway

It’s so civilized, 37 miles of just-beautiful ~ it’s actually in the National Register of Historic Places!

Merritt Parkway

Like a street in Central Park.

Nature in NY

That’s not to say there is no “nature” in The City.  Just the opposite.  Besides the miracle that is Central Park where the city goes to drink in the trees and the sky and have picnics and play ball and run and walk, we had our own little miracle of nature ~ Joe took this picture of a dragonfly that landed just over our head where we were sitting at the time on the 16th floor of our hotel (the Affinia Shelburne, at Lexington and 37th, BTW). That is some wandering dragonfly.

16th floor

See the string of lights?  That’s where the dragon fly alighted.  This is the top floor of our hotel, where, on beautiful evenings like this one . . .

16th floor

They serve cocktails in this “room” with a view.

Joe

Joe loved it up here and so did I. Next time we want to bring our binoculars!

view from up top

From our stools we could feel the breeze (remember, we are still on an island) and look off in all directions, and down onto “roof gardens” such as this one.  These people must have worked late or were out of town, because no one in their right mind would have been indoors on an evening like this if they could have helped themselves.

Friday night party in NY

Just across from our rooftop was this interesting old building, with open roof and arched windows and green growing up inside the walls and lots of people inside celebrating TGIF.

the old and the new

Even though we’re on the 16th floor, we had to look up at these two.  It’s so wonderful to see the old architecture alongside the new.

night lights

Even more interesting when the sun goes down and the lights begin to come on.

night

And of course, right from our stools we could see the Empire State Building, all lit up.  Green this time.  The building lights up in all colors depending on the event being celebrated at the time.

Empire State building

Green was to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Police Athletic League, but they change it for the Fourth of July, Christmas, Valentine’s Day, for almost any celebration imaginable.

Les Halles

Saturday we had lunch in this wonderful French restaurant called  Les Halles (pronounced Lay Ahl).

music-note

Les Halles

The food was wonderful!!!  I had a Salad Niçoise and Joe had Steak au Poivre and both could not have been more delicious.

We took the whole day off.

Taxi

After lunch we hopped into a taxi and went to . . .

ABC Home

One of my favorite stores in New York called ABC Home ~  which is seven stories of gloriosity ~ everything you need to help you remember what a wondrous world this is.

ABC Home

It’s like a museum because everything is so artsy and special and one-of-a-kindish, but better than a museum because if you see something you simply can-not live without, you don’t have to just cry inside, you can buy it!

shop

They have beaded horses, elephants and lions, which I know everyone needs.  But that’s not the point, the point for me at ABC Home is looking and ooohing and aaaahing and taking pictures, and these fanciful colorful creatures are perfect for that!  I may not need them, but I still think they are wonderful and appreciate the creativity that made them.

abc homeEverything is artistically and carefully arranged. Someone really cares about the details in this store. This lamp is so fun, little pricks of light come out of it as you move around it.  The copper pots?  Yes, I know.

home cooking

abc home

They even make timers, whisks, and potato mashers look good.

abc home

There’s all kinds of beautiful bedding and towels, a whole floor of it, and lovely fluttery curtains too.

seven floors of heaven

And every so often, for no reason except to pleasure the eye of the beholder, eye candy like this.  They are real roses and smelled wonderful. The eye and the nose were pleasured to the nth.

pink border

abc home

Vintage dinnerware!  Silver candle sticks and serving pieces.  They have kept away from the dull, the humdrum and the mundane.

abc home

It’s anything but. They had antique and new drinking glasses in every color, some of them paper thin.  See the ceiling? The whole building is in an old warehouse.

salts

They believe in art . . . these little salts! Everything is so different.

abc home

And if you need a wooden-handled pestle and mortar or a sparkly carafe, you have come to the right place.

abc home

Lots of furniture too, in all styles, sofas and chairs, everything . . . useful and original too, like this cart on wheels.

baby department

Yes, they have a baby department that is truly hard to get out of.

flower border SB

little girl dresses

I just wished I could squeeze into one of these little girl dresses!  I would take the one with the big red polka dots.

Make me a child again

dinosaur department

Of course, they have the dinosaur division.

flower border SB

our big purchase

I know you want to know what we bought.  The only thing I needed was to fill up with inspiration and beauty and there was plenty cameraof that.  I just so enjoyed looking at everything and taking pictures.  The jewelry was made by designers, it was delicate and just gorgeous ~ I could never have chosen just one thing.  But, this  is what I bought.  It’s for asparagus and pasta among other things and we needed it.  Did I tell you I am pretty practical (not very practical, but pretty practical)?  Unless I need it, or I can’t live without it, I try not to buy it.

Xavier's new clothes

But I needed this hipster charcoal onesie and could not go home without it ~ for our new baby boy (my great nephew) Xavier.  The pottery X has a hole in the back; it can be hung on the wall.  A cool hip New York baby outfit for my Central Coast of California Baby is on it’s way.

baby

King Cole Room

We had drinks at King Cole Room, at the St. Regis Hotel, a place we accidentally discovered one lovely rainy night many years back when we could not find a cab.  We’ve always come back to see the amazing Maxfield Parrish Mural over the bar.

George Washington

We spent the morning at The Morgan Library and Museum.  Saw lots of paintings of romantic landscapes and other amazing and beautiful things ~ such as this.  This IS George Washington!  This life mask was molded right on his face in 1785 and the miracle is now we could stand in front of it and take a picture of it. That’s George Washington!  Can you believe it!?

Imagination

The Morgan

One of the ceilings in Morgan Library.  Talk about filling your inspiration cup . . . there is nothing like beauty and history and . . .

The City

the music of the night.

Mas Musica? Cuz we’re goin’ home . . .

passing ships

And here we are on the boat, heading home . . . passing our sister ship . . . skirting Old Cape Cod . . .

the sea

land ho

The light was especially beautiful as we drew closer to the island and the sun was getting low.

into the harbor

Here we are arriving into the harbor.  You can tell the season has changed, the sailboats are coming back!  (They put them away during the winter and the harbor is empty. Sailboats with flags flying are a harbinger of the summer season.)

cats waiting

flowers

Yes, we had our people waiting for us.  As we are emptying the car, they watch.  They were adorable, wriggling around on the floor to be petted, which we did happily.  Elizabeth and Diana took such good care of them.  While unpacking, we turned around in time to see the moon coming up . . .

the moon

summer night

yard sale

flowers

The next morning, Sunday, real life, we walked along quiet shady streets over to Elizabeth’s new house because they were having a yard sale in her driveway.  From left, that’s Daisy, she’s the darling daughter of Mimi holding the whale, then Amy in the stripes, I’m behind Amy, then Diana, and up front, that’s Elizabeth.  Elizabeth’s new house is on the left.

downtown

We walked downtown to have breakfast at the Waterside Market . . . then we window-shopped up Main Street.  I heard Mimi say, “Hey isn’t that your house?”  And I looked in the window, and by gum, yes it is!  Someone had painted it and the painting was for sale in the window of this gallery!  Pretty good eh? We thought so!

home

So then we went back home.  And put the flag away until Independence Day, once again making ourselves incognito.

ready to play!

And played with Jack, watered the garden, did laundry, made tea, and sat down to write to you.

teacup  flowers

And here we are, ready to begin life again.  Only twelve days from today and we go back out to Connecticut to Gladys Taber’s House!  Can’t believe it!  And the next time I post, it will be the celebration for our three years of blogging, five years of Facebook with fun giveaways for my Girlfriends!

heart of the home Hope you enjoyed New York!  It’s always fun to have you along.  ‘Course I think of you with every click of the camera!  Rabbit-Rabbit Girlfriends.  Happy June! XOXO

June! Rabbit Rabbit!

The pictures you took all gave me goose bumps! How wonderful all those places were – and the store, well, shopping heaven! Thanks for the tour. It was delightful!

  2. Kathy in Los Angeles says:

    Susan,

Your cute picture of the taxi cab made me immediately think of a Little Golden Book I had as a child called The Taxi That Hurried? Do you remember that one?

    Kathy

  3. Trisha K says:

Ahhh….I needed that. It feels good to get away for a bit! Missed the kitties though. Does ABC home let people camp out on the floor? I would pay rent…..

  4. Jane F. says:

All wonderful and nostalgic to see good old New York and Connecticut. My Dad liked to drive the Merritt Parkway, too. We enjoyed it a great deal. New Englanders know about these things!! Love the ramble through ABC Home. Almost like being there! Glad you had such a great time! 🙂

    • sbranch says:

So lucky to have Joe as my tour guide, having been born and raised in CT he’s very familiar with that neck of the woods and even New York, his old young-adult stomping grounds. Thanks Jane!

  5. Sandy from Kentucky says:

My sister and I are looking forward to seeing you in Connecticut next week. We both love Gladys’ and Susan’s books (also look forward to your blogs). When we saw the two of you together in one place, WELLLLL! My sister contacted Anne (Colby) many years ago and she graciously asked us to visit Stillmeadow. We did just that and it was wonderful!! Can’t wait to see it again. You and Gladys both have that “calming” spirit, what the world needs more of.

  6. Pom Pom says:

    Those kitty faces!
Thank you for sharing your trip. You are a good tour guide!

  7. Nancy says:

Thank you for this great post! Loved the ABC Home tour and especially Girl Kitty & Jack’s sweet faces waiting at the screen door!

  8. Brenda Caldwell says:

I loved my trip to New York, via your post! I had never been there before : ) The post from Stephen was hilarious…I’m sure there are more men reading your post, after all, men have good tastes too, lol.

    • sbranch says:

Yes, they do! I hope they feel welcome despite all our “Girlfriend” stuff! I know they are still kindred spirits if they are reading this blog!

  9. mari1017 says:

I know Summer has officially begun when Susan Branch includes Patti Page – Old Cape Cod in her post! Yeah!!! ♥♥♥ Time to put my summer song playlist on my ipod 🙂 Wonderful trip to Manhattan – ahhhhh…The St. Regis!…..and then the Merritt Parkway – the best road! Glad you had a great book signing and a wonderful time. Thanks for taking us along…
The faces of your furkids are priceless. That must have been quite a surprise to see your house in the gallery window. My mom was given a watercolor (painted a local artist) of her house where she lived for 56 years, and she gave it to the young girl who bought the house this past year. The girl started to get teary when we told her that my mom wanted her to enjoy it as much as she did. You might just have to rethink that picture since you have displayed so many other past pictures from your house and previous owners!
It’s good to “see” your dad back on the blog – he must be feeling better – big hugs to him!
Happy June & enjoy the FOGT gathering!!! Wish I didn’t have to change plans and cancel :-(, but it’s all good. Life truly is good ♥♥♥

    • sbranch says:

We have some really OLD photos of this house, taken in around 1880, and then newer ones as time has gone by. They came with the house. We’ll make sure to leave them for the future owners. In fact we have all kinds of things to leave for them. Yes, my dad is feeling really good! I’ll be sure to take photos at FOGT!

      • Elaine in Toronto says:

Were your Dad and Jeanie able to adopt a new little dog and cat? Your Dad mentioned they hoped to do this in one of his comments after getting out of the hospital. Hope so. Glad your Dad is doing so well. Finnegan, my friend’s new kitten, is ruling the roost, as is perfectly normal, lol.

    • Marie says:

My best friend was given a watercolor of her house that was made when her house was on a home tour, by a lady that had previously lived in the house. It was a lovely surprise and hangs over the fireplace in her dining room! Such a treasure and lovely gift.

  10. Jeannie S says:

Thank you for sharing these lovely photos…you sent me on a vacation I can’t afford right now. I grew up on Long Island right outside of NYC and consider it home. I went to high school in New Canaan CT and never new the history of the Merritt Parkway, it’s so beautiful, thank you, thank you, thank you! I’m a transplant to Texas but in my heart always an east coast girl!

  11. dmc says:

A nice version by patti “Old Cape Cod”. Nice photos of your trip…

    youtube.com/watch?v=s6mdiFvyqCc

  12. what a super trip you had~great weather and it seems you found some of the best spots. Drinks from high above, the Morgan Library-Central Park…love it all and the eyes you see it through. I love those places so it’s so nice to see that other do too.
Loved the music. Guessed what the second one would be. 🙂

  13. ChrisTea says:

What a fun trip! Of course, if it was me in the big city, I’d still be lost. haha.
I’m so glad we can enjoy these trips through you!

    • sbranch says:

Armchair travel is always a wonderful thing. You can have tea while you drive the Merritt!

  14. Sharon in Fresno, CA says:

Oh Susan, loved the New York tour you gave us. Loved everything, the ABC Store, the museum, George’s face, the rooftops–all! About the painting of your house-you should buy it. When I see something I love/like, I never ask myself where am I going to put it? I buy it and FIND a place to put it.

  15. Jennifer says:

Susan, such a lovely trip….so many things to look at and dream about. 🙂
I wanted to share with you….I finally found your HEART OF THE HOME cookbook!! I have looked and looked and it was in mint condition! Another happy dance for me!!

  16. Janet in Rochester says:

Sue, you are so right about the Merritt Parkway. All those wonderful old WPA projects! Built when they were desperately needed and by people who desperately needed the work. And [it seems to me] back when we seemed to care a little more about making things beautiful, even mundane things like bridges and highways. Now we’re at a point when these structures are in need of repair, renovation and updating – and it would be providing much-needed jobs again. PS – Love your new toast tongs. Are they teak? An excellent choice – they’ll only get more beautiful as they get used. I have wood tongs that I use fairly regularly but they’re not nearly as pretty as yours. ABC Home – what a feast for the eyes! I strolled around their website for a while this afternoon. Can’t imagine being there in person. Looks like they get it too – why CAN’T something as utilitarian as a potato masher be beautiful or interesting too?

  17. Susan Sherrer says:

My daughter is 10 and her name is MERRITT. When she was born, that name was almost unheard of and now, I’m hearing about more Merritt’s. Thanks for sharing your NYC trip with us — loved the pictures!

  18. Jack says:

Talk to your people about trimming your front hedge down to window sill level….

  19. Gina P. from NY says:

    Susan:

What a great post. I loved all the pictures of the NYC rooftops – beautiful. I was just thinking that since I live so close the City, I’ve never actually had a reason to stay there overnight. But now that I think of it, it would really be such a great idea. Like being away on a vacation, but not really – and I’d love to stay in a hotel with a lovely rooftop garden and eatery! Thank you so much for sharing those beautiful pictures. I know what you mean about the lights – they seem to twinkle on all the buildings at night.

I have driven on the Merritt Parkway many times. It reminds me of a parkway that’s here near me: The Taconic Parkway. There are no trucks allowed on the Taconic either. It is a beautiful road that begins in lower Westchester County and winds north just about to Albany. The more northern part is so beautiful, and winds through wooded areas, with farms in the distance and lovely views of the mountains. I always take that road when I go up to Vermont – or anywhere north of me really. Lovely. I know what you mean about I-95. When I was a kid and we made our summer pilgrimage to the Cape, we used to take that ugly, congested road. It was always crowded, and backed up in the summer. Ugh. My dad did change it up a bit and we’d take I-84 sometimes just for a change in scenery, although that too became quite crowded in spots, i.e. through New Haven.

I will have to check out ABC Home next time I’m in the City. Looks wonderful, and I loved those little girl dresses. This evening when I was leaving school, a dad had come in to pick up his son and had his little daughter with him – she couldn’t have been more than 3 years old. She had on the most adorable lime green sundress with white polka dots and little white sandals. Her blonde hair was in two wee braids. As they left school, she was skipping. Oh, the innocence of youth! I was so jealous, I almost skipped out along with her!!!

    Happy Summer Susan!

    • sbranch says:

I can picture the little girl and her braids! We’ve taken the Taconic too, you are so right, beautiful!

  20. Hollace says:

Okay, now the ABC Home Store is on my bucket list!

  21. Donna Claveau says:

SB – I knew we were kindred spirits – your travelogue and photos around NYC were so delicious but when you went to ABC Carpet and Home – it was Nirvana – I never miss a trip to ABC when I am in NYC. I start at the top of the building (I think it’s the 7th floor) and work my way down each floor exploring the lovely offerings and end in the cafe in the basement enjoying a lovely lunch. The Morgan Library is also a fav or mine. I now live in NH and am not as mobile as when I lived in Boston so your and Joe’s trip w/photos was a balm for my soul. I have tortiseshell kitties so those are the faces I see when I return home-Yum!

  22. Winnie Nielsen says:

What a fantastic photo tour of New York City! I think my favorite is the Green lit Empire State Building. Wowza! It has been a long time since I visited this city and your pictures makes me hope it won’t be forever till I can visit again. You can never get tired of visiting beautiful places and scouring unique stores. Thanks for another great opportunity to tag along with you and Joe to enjoy the sites. We are so lucky!

    • sbranch says:

One of the best things you can do in that city is walk. You can go forever, and every street has interesting things so there’s plenty of chance for serendipity.

  23. Elaine Erhart says:

What a great trip! Loved the drive you took on the Merritt Parkway. Wish I’d known about that when we were out east last fall; would have worth the trip to find it and take a drive. Hope you will share more about Gladys Taber. I found two of her books and have thoroughly enjoyed reading them. Will keep looking for more of them. Enjoy your summer!!!

    • sbranch says:

You too Elaine! Happy you’ve found Gladys Taber. Have you seen my story about her here on the blog? It’s HERE.

  24. JoyceG says:

I love the Merritt Parkway! I just drove from Boston to NJ, then back up north to NH – two weddings in less than a week – and took the Merritt both ways. It’s such a lovely road that I didn’t even mind the snail’s pace miles (due to “tree work”) on my return trip. Did you know that the Merritt turns into the Wilbur Cross Parkway at the Sikorsky Bridge/Housatonic River? I can’t help myself and have to say “Wilbur” in a Mr Ed voice every time I drive that piece of highway!

  25. Thank you for sharing your New York adventures! I was hoping to go to BEA this year but could not make it happen. Next time! I missed getting to see you, though. Living in Connecticut, we pop over to the City every so often, but I love that you shared some places we had yet to discover. Every time we go we find something new, and now I’m adding some of your stops to my list for next time. Glad you had a great time. Aren’t those rooftop lounges incredible?!?!

    • sbranch says:

The City makes a stunning backdrop ~ jaw-dropping views! Maybe you are coming to Danbury for the Gladys Taber Reunion? I’ll be there the 14th of June to speak and sign books.

  26. Nellie says:

This was such a good post, Susan! I doubt that I will ever make it to NYC, and it was wonderful seeing all these amazing places! I’d definitely be tempted in the ABC Home store! Love that beautiful CT route! Smart planning not to make those bridges tall enough for semis!

How well I remember the ferry ride to MV! That’s something I’d love to repeat!

That is just about the loveliest welcoming committee I’ve seen.

Have you ever left your flag up for Flag Day? That’s June 14. This Friday, June 6, is also the 70th anniversary of D-Day. It shouldn’t matter very much if you are late getting that flag down.

    xo Nellie

    • sbranch says:

Sometimes we put it up on Labor Day and leave it until after the 4th of July. But we got energized, mainly because window washers came and did all the upstairs windows and the flag was going to be in the way. You should see our windows! We sparkle!

  27. Monique says:

Isn’ t it always so wonderful to come home though?
We just had a mini trip..loved it..but love coming home even note..
Ooh I think I would have forced myself to find a spot for that painting.
ABC. ..I would really enjoy that store!

  28. Susan ( an Ohio gal in SoCal ) says:

What a wonderful blog! I felt like I just had a mini trip myself. What fun to look at your pictures, right down to the dragonfly. Were you just a teensy bit tempted to buy the painting of your house?

    • Susan ( an Ohio gal in SoCal ) says:

I see that you didn’t buy it, but did you recognize the artist?

      • sbranch says:

No, I didn’t recognize the name. I’m also surprised I didn’t see them sitting out front — but maybe he did it from a photo.

    • sbranch says:

We wend downtown without any money! We’d only planned to go to the yard sale so we had something like fifteen dollars . . . This was probably the saving grace.

  29. Becky Farnsworth says:

I’m totally entertained that you included pictures of the Merritt Parkway. I have a niece who lives in New Haven and just dreaded I-95. Then I discovered the Merritt Parkway. It is a different world. It is nice to know that civilization and beauty can coexist! Thank you for sharing your adventures with us!

  30. Evelyn says:

Loved this post. Almost felt like I was there. and the life mask of George Washington! Amazing.

  31. shirley burt says:

So thankful that you and Joe are home safely once again. The trip was dream inspiring. You are so kind to share. The room location was perfection. Your windows are too important to give them up for wall space. And red, white and blue, nothing is better. I have just completed piecing a quilt with just those colors with a red wagon, blue tricycle, roman candles, top hats, flowers ,etc appliques with button hole stitching. Our anniversary is on the fourth of July. If I hadn’t sewn the top row on upside down-twice it might have gotten finished for this 44th year.Thank you again for all your sharing.
    Love and bunny hugs, Shirley

    • sbranch says:

LOL! But you have it now Shirley! Happy Anniversary (lots of fireworks!)

    • chris consentino says:

oh, Shirley! a VERY happy, 4th-of-july, 44th anniversary!!!! ours is on the 4th as well….43 yrs this yr….we had bought an old farmhouse, in salem, nh, a few months before we got married, and started renovating it….spent our first nite there…there was a family with sev’l children next door…well, wouldn’t you know it…ALL NITE long….boom, bam, etc…they were shooting off fireworks….wow!!! what a start, huh?? another funny thing…the tradition in my family….for sev’l generations was…thanksgiving day weddings….I had dreamt of that all my life….but, it’s a GOOD thing we didn’t plan for that because on thanksgiving, 1971….BLIZZARD!!!!!! sooooo, there ya go. hope you have had a wonderful 44 yrs, and wishing you many happppy, healthy returns-of-the-day!!!

  32. Donna Klein says:

Love love that Maxfield Parrish mural! I used to see his prints framed in beautiful old ornate frames while antiquing. So pretty. I spent a night in NY once only because I missed my connecting flight to Minneapolis. If I knew then what I know now, I wouldn’t have been so concerned with getting out first thing in the morning and lingered for the day. The hotel had signs offering a sightseeing trip: Statue of Liberty, Empire State Building, Twin Towers…..sigh. Loved seeing all your photos of NY 🙂

    • sbranch says:

The color in that mural is what you would love, it’s very powerful. Very big too. Next time!

  33. Terry says:

Thankyou Susan, so glad you’ve had a lovely time and are home safe..soon to go again! I’m so enjoying reading my Stillmeadow books – wish I could step into Glady’s old home but I know you’ll be sharing your visit there. How lucky we are!

    • sbranch says:

SO excited! She has something called the Quiet Garden. I’m going to try to be quiet in the Quiet Garden and hear her whispers.

  34. Terry says:

Oh, and I think your dad us right…you’d do a great painting of your beautiful home!

  35. Belinda Riffenburg, FL says:

Beautifully written and gorgeous pictures of your trip!! I must go back just to sit for a delicious meal in Les Halles…to check out the handsome President and visit all 60 bridges on the Merritt Parkway. Wouldn’t that make a delightful trip…Simply bbeautiful architecture! AND ABC Home store…don’t you just love it!?! Any idea what ABC stands for “Absolutley Beautiful & Charming” perhaps? I can only imagine the many rubber bands flying around in that home sweet home of yours!! Thank you!

    • sbranch says:

That is the perfect guess! Oh yes, we are rubber band city! Jack is on my chair in here right now, curled and asleep. What a person he is! Have I told you he’s found his tail??? Now he doesn’t walk, he whirls through the house. The worst is when he does it on top of my art table.

  36. Jane says:

    An ahh moment!! Thanks Susan

  37. Mia Sophia says:

    Hi Susan…
Glad you had a wonderful trip to NYC! I was on my two week 60th birthday vacation and visited Martha’s Vineyard last week! I recognized your lovely home with the big American flag across the front and Joe working on his truck in the driveway. I introduced myself and asked if I could take a few of my own photos. Joe said you were getting ready to leave the next day for NY. We had a nice chat and as I walked away, I was overcome with happy tears and emotions…to be so close to the place and person I have admired for a very long time. It was all a dream come true! This was a May I will never forget, between my under the sea/mermaid party and the trip of a lifetime to Hilton Head, Savannah, Charleston, Boston, Newport, Martha’s Vineyard, Nantucket, Cape Cod and more. I loved it all! Thank You!!!

    • sbranch says:

Look at you Mia Sophia, what a wonderful 60th Birthday trip! Making your dreams come true. You went to some very gorgeous places. Joe told me he’d been talking to someone, but I didn’t know it was YOU! Happy Birthday! xoxo

      • Mia Sophia says:

Thank you Susan…the month of May was truly magical! You should have seen the photos of my party!!! Unbelievably beautiful! It included my depiction of the ocean floor of a mermaid’s haven. We also did fun crafts of making bath sea salts and glittering seashells. The Survival Guide for Landlocked Mermaids was also proudly on display. 🙂
        Cheers!

Mia Sophia, That sounds like a wonderful trip! I live in Georgia and have been to Hilton Head, Savannah and Charleston and long so very much to go to Martha’s Vineyard, Nantucket and Cape Cod! Such wonderful places! Happy birthday by the way!

      • Mia Sophia says:

Thank you, Marie…we also had fun in Bluffton and Beaufort, SC if you have the chance to go. Everyone was so darn nice…family oriented, relaxed, dog friendly. And…oh my how I love Newport and all the islands! I am the happiest with a view of the water! It’s all good! 🙂

  38. Cindy Tuning says:

Martha’s Vineyard and NYC must be polar opposites except when it comes to being magical! Even though I live in NY, I’ve only been to the city twice and I never felt so alive in my life!! So much energy there that you just can’t find anywhere else. Maxfield Parrish is my favorite artist. Thanks for the tip on the alternate route. That Joe is the man!!

    • sbranch says:

I feel the same way, something very ALIVE about that city! It’s a good thing to feel, and a good thing to come home from.

  39. Laura Ann in Vermont says:

We came across a painting of our house in an art gallery once and we passed it right by. No regrets here… we didn’t especially care for it and it also seemed silly to us to have a painting of our house that we see every day.

    • sbranch says:

I know, it’s funny, but it would seem strange to have a picture OF the house IN the house…I think I might wish we had it if we moved into another house! But it is all a moot point now, because I found out this morning, one of our Girlfriends (who shall not be named) has bought it! It’s hers now! A little piece of the Vineyard will be hanging on her walls.

  40. Stephanie says:

    Susan,

Thanks, for sharing, I am such a country girl but love seeing pictures of the city. Always love your MUSICA choice. Would love the ABC Home store too. Love the sweet kitties waiting at the door, that is a sure sign of “home”.

  41. Denise W. Jose says:

Great pictures of your travels to NYC. Your comment about the deserted balcony made me smile. The reason why the folks were not enjoying the evening on their balcony was because they had migrated to the Hamptons for the week end along with hundred of others escaping the city.
I can attest to it as I was visiting Sag Harbor and had to deal with the crowded roads and stores. Not complaining, just a sign of the summer season. I just play tourist too and enjoy the beaches and the great restaurants.

  42. Martha B says:

Loved seeing the photos of NYC as we, too, will be headed there soon. Last time I was there was about 50 years ago-!

  43. Rayma Halloran says:

Thank you, thank, thank you for giving me new places to explore the next time I visit NYC! All the places you took pictures of, are the kind of places I love to visit!

  44. Kay - North Central Texas says:

You’ve done it once again! You’ve not only entertained us writing about your NYC trip, but imparted a bit of a history lesson as well. I enjoyed reading about Washington and his life mask.

My son has his BA in art and through a recommendation of one of his professors got a job in museum services. I love hearing about my son’s encounters with antiquity/art as I do yours. My son described Lincoln’s masks (at the Smithsonian) as very surreal. I’ve told him for a long time he needs to be journaling.

Well, thanks again for taking all of us “girls” along. Enjoy your time at home with kitties!

    Kay

  45. Vivian in TN says:

Thanks for sharing your trip and your coming home! I really enjoyed this post, and look forward to the next one.

Happy June! May and June are the most beautiful months of the year.

  46. Jane Grayson says:

    Hello Susan,

What fantastic pictures! Thank you! It’s a dream of mine to visit the USA one day and when I read your posts and see your photos I almost feel as if I’m there!

Love Jane, Manchester (it’s raining here as usual!) England.

    • sbranch says:

If I do enough of this, you’ll be able to pick the places you like the best! It’s raining here too. Cool, wet, and dark. But we think sun tomorrow.

  47. Cheri Plant says:

SB, Your travels are a wonder. You enjoy every aspect in everything you see and best of all you bring it home to us. Right here sitting at my computer I’ve just been to New York via your love for sharing. One of my favorite things you do is take a little of home with you. I’ve done the same thing in my travels. I always take one of my vintage table cloths with me. No matter where I’m staying its pulled out for evening or morning snack time, putting it on the coffee table or if I have a balcony it goes on the outdoor table in the morning. Now I must take along a tea cup and saucer to make it even more delightful. Your picture taking has encouraged me to put together a travel book of my own as I have so many beautiful snaps. I do take lots of my scenery pictures and make greeting cards out of them. Yes, I still do snail mail. I find there is nothing more soothing than to open that mail box and find a loving hand written note from someone, so I will never stop sending in return. Happy days, Cheri

  48. chris consentino says:

Susan….as I most always say…thank you! oh! thank you!!! a wonderful “visit”!!!! we also travelled the merritt pkwy many times….did not know the details of it, tho. and, yes!!!! we surely could use a WPA again. many say “it couldn’t be done now, in these times…..wouldn’t work out” HA! I say. it could well have worked!!! sad. CCC would have been good as well. too bad no one asked us, huh???? can’t wait for your next “visit”….ALWAYS so wonderful !!!! what did we EVER do without you!!!! thank you.

  49. CarolK says:

I really enjoyed going to NYC thru your eyes. I didn’t know there were rooftops you could actually sit on and enjoy the city. We live only an hour away but I can’t budge hubby in that direction. He’s a country boy through and through and I think a big city scares him. Don’t say I told you.

  51. Such fun! (or as in Cold Comfort Farm- amusing and diverting 😉 )
You make me long for a trip to NYC- it’s been years since I’ve been.
That ABC Home store is so amazing- I think I drooled right on my keyboard.
You would never get me out of there. Oh and I love the Parrish mural at the St. Regis so very muchly!
The kitties in the window are so adorable- so lovely to come home.

  52. Dawna Chapman (Edmond, OK) says:

This blog just might be one of my very favorites, Susan! I felt like I was on the trip with you, seeing all those beautiful sights. I’ve never been to NY but now I am going to plan a trip with a girlfriend and go to all the places you did. Fabulous picture of your beloved Joe sitting in the “room” with a view! So handsome! Loved the Merritt Parkway, the Morgan Library & Museum, and the ABC Home store. I found their website and bookmarked it (at least I think it’s theirs). As soon as I post this message, I am going shopping! Oh…and seeing those furry little faces that greeted you upon your arrival home brought joy to my heart!

Thank you so much for sharing your trip with us. It was truly wonderful!

    Dawna

  53. Beverly Brewer says:

Hello to Susan and Joe from the English Rose Tea Room, perpetually thanking you for sweet post after sweet post to delight us all! What would we do without you to embellish our lives with your illustrations, trip details, photos, recipes, kitty “tales” and endearing what-nots of life you so graciously share time after time? Thank you!
Jo and Hilary (tea room manager who was off the day you and Joe came) just came back from a quick tea convention near the Queen Mary and they stayed on the beautiful ship overnight (reminded me of you and Joe taking your Mom there and how you shared that with all of us GFs).
Do you and Joe remember meeting Jane, our sweet English lady? She has an older, plumpish, sedate cat who likes to “plunk” herself down here and there—
Jane and her hubby affectionately nicknamed her “Sandbag”! So funny!
So loved the quote about the smiling crescent moon on the sapphire throne; loved the rooftop dining; glittery city at night; ABC shop of eye candy and the beautiful way you put it all together for us to savor. Thank you, Susan!

    • sbranch says:

Hi Beverly! LOL, Sandbag! Nice to hear from you, be sure to tell everyone we said hello. Thank you!

  54. Mary Ann W. says:

I’m sure someone has already asked this, but I didn’t have time to read all 313 posts to find the answer…Did you buy the beautiful painting of your house? I wouldn’t have been able to resist. )

  55. Mary - in Phoenix says:

While you and Joe were away, Susan. and after my panicked call, your lovely girlfriend-team in SLO (both Kellee and Sheri!) rushed two books to me in time for my granddaughter’s birthday! Sweetly wrapped in tissue; it involved red hearts …and SSB birthday stickers!! All I had to add was red ribbon! And all to make a darling girl, a now and future Girlfriend (and her Gran) happy. Please convey my special thanks for their extra effort. Meanwhile… another wonderfully happy blog! Which always make us smile. For which all of us Guy- and Girlfriends thank you, Susan! XO

  56. Gert~Iowa says:

Oh, I loved your pictures of New York! Just like being there…smile… Of course everything was fun..but I love the rooftop room! To me that would be just amazing!! Especially on a night like you had. Wow! And that store…my oh my! Who wouldn’t just have a grand ole time just looking! smile.. The baby gifts are adorable! Perfect! Well now I can actually say, I really know what George Washington looked like..lol Very cool! So glad you made it home safe and sound to your awaiting family! Ha..ha! Looks like your friends took very good care of them…

Oh, I know you have to be excited about visiting Gladys Taber’s house! Looking forward to seeing your pictures from there!! (Did I mention I love her? Lol) I got my newsletter the other day, I can’t wait to finish reading it!

  57. Elaine in Toronto says:

Hi Susan, you probably know that Emma Bridgewater has written a book titled “Toast and Marmalade and Other Stories”. I believe it is available this week. It is filled with beautiful photos of Emma’s life and pottery designs with stories about her and her pottery business. I fell in love with the cover (a charming stack of small bowls) so have ordered a copy. I know you shouldn’t judge a book by its cover but I did and I don’t think I’ll be disappointed. Perhaps you’ll be carrying it in your store. Thought the girlfriends might be interested.

  58. Susan Austin says:

Your words, photos and artwork were just the medicine to sooth my soul today! Also, being the non-baker that I am, made your blueberry cobbler for company last week…SUCCESS! Thanks so much for enriching my life Susan.

  59. Mary says:

We have driven the Merritt from Boston to my sister Joanne’s house in NJ for close to 40 years and never noticed the bridges were different. Joanne reminded me that a traffic jam on the Merritt can test one’s patience to the nth degree but the beauty of the road is worth it. And there are plenty of opportunities for when you might need a potty stop or a bag of M&M’s (that for my other sister who is also a Susan).
Joanne stayed at the Shelbourne and loved it and now your blog has inspired to plan a sister weekend there complete with a trip to ABC Home and the Morgan Library and Museum. I’ll be sure to bring my binoculars when we go to the rooftop bar at the Affinia. We’ll have a toast to you and Joe!
Glad Jack and Girl Kitty faired well in your absence. 😉

  60. Ruth Thomas says:

Maybe I can stowaway in your trunk on your next trip to New York!!! What lovely pics and I’d go crazy in that store!! It is lovely to visit but there is no place like home! I lived in Connecticut when I was born – on Broad St. in New London. I was actually born in Quonset Point, RI at the Naval Hospital but we lived in New London until I was 18 months and we moved to Newport. Thank you for sharing your trips with us, Susan. And seeing the ocean as you go home – just delightful.

  61. Terrie Trebilcock says:

LOVE the Morgan Library, and would love to come up with a reason to get a research license there.
Les Halles was Anthony Bourdain’s restaurant before he wrote his books and became a Food Network star! I would love to eat there.
    Love the photos!

  62. Joan Lesmeister says:

Out with the ugly, in with beautiful, roads that is! Golly, what a pretty drive! NY, NY, gorgeous at night! Handsome Joe peeking in the picture! Thanks for the trip home, & nice to visit with the girls at the sale too! Nice painting of your beautiful home my dear, but, know your painting would be even lovelier! Your kitties probably heard your car, and streaked to the window when you got home! Hi to Blog Daddy Jack – nice to see you back in the swing of things!!!! Best get movin’ along to pack – 5 days with 3 BFFs for a mini vacation (whoopee!) then shoulder repair for me, I guess for awhile, Don will be making comments as I dictate!! Hope he likes !!!!! as much as I do!!!! Thanks for your bloggin’!!! xoxo Joanie

  63. Rhonda D. says:

    **SOS GIRLFRIENDS**

Please pray for Moncton, New Brunswick. We have an armed and dangerous killer on the loose. Three police officers have been killed and two wounded. This city needs your prayers to find this guy. Please pray!!

    • sbranch says:

Oh dear Rhonda . . . for anyone who wants updates on this:

      Be safe. xoxo

      • Joan Lesmeister says:

        Prayers!

        • Rhonda D. says:

Prayers have been answered, God is good….this guy has been captured overnight and is now in the hands of police. Life is slowly returning to normal. Thank you for the prayers.

          • sbranch says:

From the moment you wrote, I have watched your police Twitter account and been waiting and looking to hear from you. How AWFUL. How scary. Were you in the closed off part of the town? They got him! Thank goodness. When they told everyone to turn on their outside lights I shivered!

          • Rhonda D. says:

Thankfully I was not in that part of the city, but I have a lot of friends who live and work there. You could leave the lockdown area, but you couldn’t get back in. The pics, video, eye witness accounts were surreal. He was being spotted in yards all over the place. People living in the area were told to stay and sleep in their basements. I really didn’t feel well by Thurs. evening. There is a huge christian presence in this city, and I knew most of the city was on their knees…it would only be a matter of time before they caught him. God answered at 12:10am on Fri. morning. They caught him with a plane and infrared type equipment…huddled under a tree in someone’s backyard. He came out without weapons, surrended, and said “I’m done!” I don’t think there is going to be any psychiatric assessment. I had an appointment in that part of the city on Fri. at noon…traffic was insane, still a heavy police presence there, and you could actually feel the evil, heaviness in the atmosphere. Attended my niece’s wedding, 6 hour drive from here, and it just felt good to get out of here. The funeral for the 3 police officers is tomorrow at the coliseum. My husband was asked to help direct traffic, but I think the RCMP officers are now going to do it. We are going to RCMP headquarters tonight to look at all the flowers everyone is leaving. I can’t believe we are actually living through this. What is happening to our world? Thank goodness for you Susan for helping to keep us sane and focused on the good things in life. I sure hope you realize the importance of all you do for us. Thank you. xo

          • sbranch says:

All these good people and one bad (sick) guy. Keep your mind knowing that. It’s just that bad really weighs so much. I’m so sorry Rhonda, and you know, this too shall pass. I love infra red. That’s twice I saw it do something — just like Boston. Prayers for your community for healing. xoxo

  64. Another Susan says:

Ahhh…the Merritt Parkway. It’s the way I’ve been traveling to New England from PA for many, many happy NE vacations! It’s the best!! Can’t wait to travel it again in a few weeks!

  65. Linda says:

When I was in my 20’s I did a fabric collage of the family home and framed it (about 36″ x 40″) and presented it to my parents for Christmas. It hung in the family room for 40 some years until I had to sell the house for Mom and the new owners asked if they could have it……….I was flattered and gave it to them but now would give anything if I still had it as it is where I grew up and now with Mom’s dementia it would be something I could have hanging up for her to see. I’m sorry you did not buy the painting but maybe the girlfriend will give it to you! Thanks for the trip pics………..and I agree with you on the red polka dotted dress…..too cute!!! How did the book signing go? I don’t recall you mentioning it. Happy Linda from Idaho where the weather is perfect for sitting in the dirt in my garden and getting ready to make a fairy garden! (low 80’s with a cooling breeze!)

    • sbranch says:

I know, I should have put up a photo or two — Joe definitely took them, I just forgot. It was wonderful, met lots of nice people, as usual — signed over 300 books in about an hour and a half. The show was exciting, hustle and bustle of the book business and something like 200 authors signing their books all over the Javits Center.

      • Paul Zelinsky, children’s book author/illustrator, was there. He posted several photos on Twitter. I kept looking to see if I could see you!

      • Georgie says:

The Javitz Center is definitely all hustle and bustle!!! I remember going to Data Processing Trade Shows there years ago. It was always exciting just to walk through the streets of NY to get there. I know your Girlfriends were glad to see you and Joe!

  66. Marie says:

My girlfriend and I must go to the ABC store! I loved your word “gloriosity”! I love spring cleaning and washing and “pettying” my pretty things! And you do have that “calming” spirit that Sandy from Kentucky speaks about! I am about 3/4 the way through “A Fine Romance” and I am loving it!!! Really taking time to notice the things around me that I never noticed before. Taking time to calm down and look around. Congrats on 3 years of blogging and 5 years of FB! Excited to celebrate with you!

  67. Mary Lou Cummings says:

Thanks again for another wonderful post! It’s always hard to choose the places to visit in NYC because the choices are endless. But loved your photos of ABC Carpet! Many years ago, there was talk of one coming to New Haven when our Macy’s left for the suburbs. But it never came to be. Can’t get over the selections they offer! The limo driver (in March) to JFK took the Merritt Pkw. instead of I-95 because of less traffic. But you should know that sometimes it tends to flood in low areas during those torrential rainstorms, and is slow to being plowed in the winter. Otherwise, the scenery is much appreciated and No Trucks or commercial traffic. How good is that!!!

  68. Kay Johnson says:

I so enjoy your photos of the VH. I am in Vineyard Haven for several weeks. My evening arrival on the ferry was like your photos…gorgeous. I am off to visit Bunch of Grapes to gather up what items they have of yours. I love your latest book and can’t wait for your next!

  69. Marie (Long Beach, California) says:

Welcome home! From the beautiful pictures, I’d say you and Joe had a fantastic time in New York. If I ever make it to New York I will have ABC Home at the top of my “to visit” list. I could spend days in that amazing store! Hope Elizabeth’s yard sale was a big success. 🙂 The Merritt Parkway is so beautiful, and I loved all the history of how it came to be. It’s so nice to have you home again and I’m certain Girl and Jack feel the same way. ♥

  70. sondra fox says:

    Mornin’ Susan & Gf’s,
It appears that, after viewing your NY pictures, & hearing about all the fun things you two did in NY, I’ll have to go there. I know I’d love having a drink way up high on some fantastically tall building, while the lights of the city came on. And, gardens in the sky! A novel idea. We took our grandchildren to a concert at the fairly new Disney concert hall in downtown Los Angeles. We went on the rooftop of this unique building, where we viewed the lights of downtown Los Angeles coming on. There were tall buildings all around us, not as many as in NYC, but worthy of note. Being a gardener, I loved seeing the garden on the Disney rooftop. My husband took our grandchildren up a staircase where they could stand & view many more buildings with lights on. The design of the Disney building is one that once you’ve seen it, you’ll never forget it.
The thing that peaked my interest the most, on your blog, was the ABC store. I think you’d really enjoy a show I watched on PBS, about a man named Selfridge. It’s a series on PBS, about an American who went to England & built an empire by developing this marvelous department store. A true story. He had all this wealth, yet died penniless. Heartbreaking. Have any of you seen the series? Almost as good as Downton Abbey. I’m reading more these days, even more than I usually do, due to the TV being very uninteresting to me. I’ll patiently await the arrival of the new Downton Abbey, immersed in my books.
And, the mold of Washington is so remarkable! Imagine if we had each & every president in a mold. Priceless to see George Washington’s face, right there in front of us.
And, your cats, sitting there patiently waiting for you to be “theirs” once again. They look like they’ve warmed up to one another. So glad for you. My beautiful Sheeba, a Himalayian kitten, (long haired Persian who looks, & talks, like a Siamese), was spayed this week. I’ve secluded her to our guest bedroom, where she can heal & be away from Jack who loves to play with her & lick her face. They now love one another. Sheeba plunks down in front of him, rolls over on her back, to look up at Jack’s cute face. I love watching them.
Wish we’d have known about the Parkway you talk about, when we were on one of our cross country trips (took three cross country trips within the last five years).
I love hearing about all the things you do Susan. When you first came to Martha’s Vineyard, I imagine you had a few difficult moments when you were adjusting. I came across this saying that reminded me of some of your adjustment time, of “everyone’s” adjustment times. “ENDURE and save yourself for times of HAPPINESS.” I’ve been adjusting to being without my dear husband. I’m feeling much more comfortable with being alone now. I’ve always known I’ve been a good companion to myself, & I really enjoy being alone. I’m involved in so many interesting things. Friends are all around when I get really lonely. Friends are my flower garden. Speaking of flower gardens, I must go to the garden now, as I have a date with some weeds. (Sandy from Chihuahua Flats)

    • sbranch says:

I love your positive words at the end Sandy, you are an inspiration to others, living life as it is given. xoxo

      • sondra fox says:

Dear Susan, Coming from you, that my words somehow help others, is a very endearing comment from you, to me, as I know how others think of you as a dear friend & one who uses her life to bring such joy & happiness to all of us. You’re the best. I do wish you lived close to me though, so we could “really” be friends in person. I imagine a lot of the GF’s wish for the same thing. I shouldn’t get greedy though, as I’ve had two
GF’s (sadly they’ve passed) who had been very close to me my entire adult life, & one who has been my friend since childhood, with two GF’s that I’ve been close to my entire adult life, who I do a lot of fun things with. We’ve recently taken up horse races! Fun, fun, fun. Each GF has brought their own gifts of friendship to my life & have been like sisters to me. I do cherish our online friendship dearly, Susan. You are an important relationship in my life. (Sandy from Chihuahua Flats)

        • sbranch says:

Thank you Sondra! Love your horse races — you must be waiting for the triple crown! That gorgeous California horse!

  71. Georgie says:

    Oh Susan!

You made it home! After a wonderful trip, soaking everything up, you headed home. Your 2 adorable kitty “kids” were there with purrs :), and your newest child was waiting with open pages!

The ABC store looks just fabulous. I could get lost for hours, looking at everything. I was expecting you to write that you filled up your AFR van with more treasures. LOL.

I always enjoy sitting down for a cup of tea and catching up for a while 😉

Thanks for your contagious JOY my friend,
    Georgie from NJ

P.S. Dad made it home too… his journey was complete with greetings from many familiar smiling faces.

  72. Janet Rowlnad says:

What a lovely trip! I could almost feel the energy of New York through your pictures! Oh, I could never go in ABC. You have some strong willpower to come away with wooden tongs!
    Thank you.

  73. Judy says:

I love the Maxfield Parrish mural. I have a framed print of “the Young Prince of the Black Isles” hanging in our study. I often have to explain that it existed long before Enya used it as a CD cover. So many people have seen his work used as cover art for entertainers that they don’t realize that there is so much more to it.

Good thing that ABC Home is not near my home. I would go in there at least everyother week!
I really wanted to go to Gladys Taber’s House, but I don’t think I could find or afford a hotel room.

I need a cup of coffee!

Ahhh…I always love NYC. I’m jealous of Elizabeth–wish is was MY new house. Lucky girl she is! I wish her the best. Your welcoming committee was adorable. And the pic of your house was awesome. Although I might feel a bit odd that someone painted my house and was selling it w/o my knowledge….looking forward to seeing Gladys Taber’s house..I’m a great arm chair traveler…wish I did better in real life..I love new sights…from the hills of TN.

    Hi Susan!

Gee, no wonder I’ve been confused most of the week. I lost a day, ever do that? Guess it ‘cuz the calendar you posted on the bottom of the post is last year, 2013. That’s my story, and I’m stickin’ to it! lol.

Loved the shopping trip to the department store! So much ohhhhh-ing and ahhhhh-ing sounds coming from my front room. I’m a lookie-loo….love to look, not necessarily buy.

Have a great weekend! It’s GORGEOUS here!

Susan..I purchased some of your very first line of fabric and have incorporated the pieces in the quilts I have made as gifts. If I included some of of your fabric that meant that the ‘giftee’ was special to me. The only pieces I have left are in the scrap basket and I still dig through them for my applique work.

Susan, since the first time I saw your book Heart of the Home, I’ve been addicted to any and all things Susan Branch! We seem to be kindred spirits, we do. You’ve given me the opportunity to touch so many lives through the use of many odds and ends. Receivers of your calendars can hardly wait to stop by my home in December, waiting on baited breath to see if they will be blessed with your wall calendar. Of course, you also help me amaze them with adorable wrapping treatments such as stickers. My 2 kitties also love sleeping (or just napping) on my grandmother made quilts in an antique pie safe with no punched tin or glass coverings. Why would anyone want to cover up the gorgeous fabrics, except for when a kitty is napping on top of them! Some may say I’m old fashioned, yet I couldn’t be prouder. I know I’m a basket case, and I only wish my grandmothers and great-grandmothers were still alive to stop by and share a cup of tea and conversation. I know they would be your fans too, Susan!

  93. Susan Murges says:

I love your fabrics…always have! Bought the bolt ends of your red and blue “plaids” and won’t use them on a quilt unless the person is “quilt worthy.” Truly, I love your fabrics in my quilts and love the mostly white background with pastel blocks…they just light my fire! Your quilt collection reminds me of my own meager collection!!! Thanks so much for showing us yours.

Have you ever thought about the idea of making a jigsaw puzzle? What a wonderful treat to do while sipping a cup of tea!
