Downton Lovers . . .

OK, Downton Lovers, time to cuddle in for the finale.   MUSICA  Sob. Sob at the beginning, sob at the end. Sob in the middle.

adventure and tea

IMG_0243We are ready!  We are hunkered down in front of the TV for the finale of Downton Abbey, Season Five (Take this as fair warning, girlfriendsif you haven’t seen it, run away from here now!).

I would like to take this moment to thank all of our darling British Girlfriends for being so careful and not giving anything away.  I love you for that!  It must have been hard! I have to tell you, it was worth waiting for!

heart-spacer

Love Julian FellowesOff we go for Grouse Hunting Season (love this scene) . . . something I for one, would never miss. How ’bout you?  Who doesn’t love a big plate of Grouse and plenty of catsup?  But if you go, fair warning,  bring along your own butler, because the one that comes with the house is a real problem child.

oh brother

Stowell comes across immediately as worse than Dickie’s boys — mean to everyone and arrogant.  You would think he was an Earl instead of a Butler. He immediately demotes Barrow to footman of all things, and he has the nerve to call Tom a chauffeur ~ he has NO IDEA who he’s messing with. I pity him.

dinner

Perfectly lovely party in the most GORGEOUS green room . . . which Stowell ruins  . . . my grandmother used to have this saying, “there’s always a creep in the crowd.”  And around the folk of Downton Abbey, that seems to be true.  Can’t have a dinner without somebody doing something!

thank you so much

Because Stowell refuses to serve Tom.  Look at Mary’s face.  He doesn’t realize the Crawleys have a huge code of ethics when it comes to Tom:  Hurt Tom, hurt us, hurt you.  Right Mary?  Go get him Barrow.  Here is an opportunity for you to use your immense powers for good.

how dare heEl Jefe is not pleased, calls Barrow a stupid fool in FRONT OF EVERYONE! Big Mistake. Triple jeopardy.

Yikes

Hello?  Are we on time for the party?  Lord Sinderby’s mistress and out-of-wedlock child have arrived, courtesy of Barrow, via Stowell’s big mouth.  Stowell is his own worse enemy, “Loose Lips Sink Ships.”  What makes this scene really unfortunate is that everyone knows what high moral standards Lord Sinderby has.

you are so caughtClosing your eyes won’t help, we know you’re in there.  Everyone has watched how nasty you’ve been to  Rose and her parents because they are getting a divorce.  Mary even tried to talk you out of it.  But Nooooo.  You weren’t having it.  Happy now?

you better be niceDon’t cry, just tell me her name and I’ll save you. No need to look like a deer in the headlights, just tell me her name.

Diana and Daniel

Oh Diana, I’m so glad you could make it . . . Let me introduce you, . . . Lady Sinderby?  I’d like to introduce my friend . . .

HELP ME

MARY: What’s going on?

ROSE: Help me.

(This is that same wonderful dress Rose was wearing last week when her mother tried to sabotage her marriage.  No wonder she’s moving to New York.)

This is really fair

What’s your name little boy.  Daniel?  Fancy that.  That’s my husband’s name.

Oh you are too kindLord Sinderby tells Rose he’s sorry,  thanks her for her quick thinking, makes her day with gramophone in the Library!  She loves gramophones!   Robert says to the hypocrite: “She’ll love you forever if you let her.” Lord Sinderby does not deserve Rose, or his wife. Or the mistress either, for that matter.

Bootiful

But say goodbye to Rose . . . she is taking her good influence, her steel-trap of a mind, and her lovely husband and moving to New York to be Cinderella . . . from now on Lord Sinderby, you will have to fend for yourself, no Rose to save you.  Yes, but how about US, how will we live without the picture of open-minded, flapper-girl youth that is Rose? Not to mention her adorable outfits? I don’t like thinking about it.

dress trim

She’s been such a fun fashion plate to have around. Look at the trim on these two dresses!  The trim, the pleats, the collar on Mary, the fabric, the colors!

coat

But we still have Mary  and she never lets us down . . . this coat is too wonderful for words . . . what a scene it made when she walked into the prison to see Anna. Poor Anna.

front of coat

The front is as pretty as the back.  Anna on the other hand . ..

pitifulis a mess.  Though she did get out of prison due to her husband’s lying confession. These two!  Now he’s gone, she doesn’t know where, he’s alone and wanted for murder. She’s officially more morose than Edith on her worst day ~ too pitiful to even use the front door even when Lady Mary says it’s OK.  She’d rather sit around by herself staring at her wedding pictures.

shhhhhThen the big surprise…Bates comes in and sneaks up on her . . .

Oh BoyFor a big Christmas surprise, the best present she could ever get.

happy christmasHopefully all charges against both of them will be dropped by next fall and when we see them next January, they will have twins and their murdering days will be over. Do it for them.  Do it for us.

edith

Other happy news, Robert forgave his daughter with all the aplomb and warmth a good daddy would have for his little daughter and her lot in life, including the added bonus of respect for Gregson, the absent father  . . . he even asked her to forgive him! (The bedtime hair-do and garb is wonderful, she should find somewhere to GO in this outfit.)

happiness

Edith is the happiest I’ve ever seen her.  Tom let her know he knows about Marigold by telling her that where he came from there were many Marigolds, so now the only person that doesn’t know is Mary.  Let’s save that for next year shall we?  Dee-licious!

Edith

Edith’s looking fabulous!  She should be, she’s had years of problems, and lately, most of them have gone away.

edith

Look at this hat in the Beautiful English Countryside.  I don’t have a single complaint for any of the hats in this episode, love them all!

Isobel

Isobel looks wonderful

the front

and this one, I really like this one . . . want to see the back?

the back

It looks cozy for foggy grouse hunting.  And who is that guy they paired Edith off with  . . . isn’t he sort of a farm manager or something? I didn’t get that part. He must be OK, or they wouldn’t give him a gun and let him take up precious space in the Grouse Season Wagon.  Look at all the trouble they made for Tom.  Just making sure this man has social standing enough for a Crawley? And isn’t it interesting how none of the women get to shoot?  They were, what?  Like dinner partners?  The entertainment?  I don’t know, but I’d rather be in front of the fireplace with a good book.

tea time!

Cora

Wasn’t the ride on the train fun?

Mary

Mary looks about ten years old here. Nice hat.

nightgown

 Cora’s nightgown!  Gorgeous.

not that good eh?

Then this.  The Drama of the “Restorative Broth.” Denker goes to the experts for help, which is where they all find out Denker is a terrible cook!

nice

And Daisy’s secret fix, a bottle of her own homemade broth, goes awry . . . when Spratt finds it and pours it down the drain.  Spratt rhymes with Brat.  Is it possible he and Denker are attracted to each other?   Noooooo, too icky to contemplate.

shock and awe

No worries, Denker takes it quite well . . .

girlart

kindnessAnd the sweetheart that saves the day is our darling Violet.  Who was just the cat’s meow through this whole episode . . .

just as I imagined

She dresses up the Princess Eleana in her own clothes and says, go ahead and keep them.  The Princess is bitter.  Hasn’t got any luggage, hasn’t got the will to LIVE even ~ and the faces Isobel makes while listening to her are priceless.

still, the hairSeems to blame it all on Prince Igor who looks very nice in the borrowed Theater Royale Tuxedo . . . maybe the hair isn’t dirty? Maybe it’s product?  He’s off to Paris now with Mrs. Happiness, I guess we’ll never know.

our girlSo, honorable Violet breaks up forever with the love of her life. “Never complain, never explain.” (Think I’ll use that 🙂 )  Luckily she has her BFF Isobel to hash it all over with . . . flowery hatwe’re reminded of Royal Wedding Balls and midnight ice skating in St. Petersburg all those years ago.  When Isobel asked, Violet wouldn’t say definitively if she ever strayed again after Igor, “Remember, WE were the Edwardians.”  Not many people can say that.

“I will never again receive an immoral proposition from a man,” she says to Isobel, “was I wrong to savor it?”  NO Violet, you did it all perfectly!  Thank you for allowing us to be there for the savoring.

Good bye DickieAnd then this!  Two perfectly well-suited people, yearning for each other, kept apart by selfish children who should have a life of their own and get away from England.  But Oh well.  wah.  Very sad, this one.  I say, disinherit!

BFFBut these two make the best couple of all . . . Best Friends Forever.

friends

And so much more,

sisters, that TOM!

Tom, our bridge, and his prayer to Sybil, that brings the two sisters together . . . these three, the ones that “should have grown old with her” . . . beautiful.

family in motion

And this pretty picture of the future Lords and Ladies of Downton Abbey, Marigold, George and Sybbie.  I wonder how much trouble THEY’LL get into when it’s their turn?  How CAN Tom take Sybbie away.  I mean, poor Robert.  I’ll believe he’s going when I see he’s gone.

hello handsome

Well, what do we think about Mr. Henry Talbot, the “uninvited guest” that “fixed everything so that Atticus couldn’t join the shooting party?”  I thought he was nice.  He seemed sensitive, said, “Young widow.”  Was self-effacing.  But Mary?  Oh nooo.  Not that easy.

Hello handsome

But then she thought better of the whole thing. Maybe she liked the way he danced. She came out and apologized just as he was leaving . . .

fast cars, a little old In his very fast car. (I can’t help but think she would worry to see anyone zooming off in a fast car.) I would rather have Tom, but this guy looks OK.  He seems to be of her ilk.  Can give as good as he gets.  If that’s the way they want to live.

handsome groom to be

Through the whole show these two kept having private little wine tastings.

wee bit o sherry

Then he bought a house and put both their names on it . . .

I've got my love to keep me warm

What?

Then he shocked everyone by saying the magic words “I DO want to be stuck with you.  Will you marry me?”

love

Weal-we?

And despite the very obvious missing kisses (my whole self was saying KISS KISS KISS but it didn’t happen), we all cried, even our darling booby sweetheart Carson cried.  Did you know?  It’s Elsie and Charles.

my cup of tea

Please, please, please, can we PLEASE go to the wedding?  I would also like a tour of the new house and maybe just one little cup of tea and a biscuit with the newlyweds.

There is so much more that I didn’t even get to, but I think WordPress is going to kick me out if I make this much longer!  What a show, what a wonderful show.

flower border

say goodbyeAnd there they go!  Off away from us for another year.  My new Book design reminder cardprayer?  Downton Abbey, the movie.  In Juilan Fellowes’ spare time please.

And just so you know, when I’m not with you, I’m not dilly-dallying-doing-nothing, I am writing a romantic kind of book that I think might be just your cup of tea, a little history, a little creativity, a little love story.  And, it has come to my attention, that in order to fit everything I want into my new book ~ all the photos and watercolors and other fun things, and not have it be the size of War and Peace, I will have to make it two books!  What a relief to finally figure that out!  Which means, I am sending the first book off to the editor in about a week.  We are getting closer.

If you do it with heart . . .

The other thing, I have a special give-away for you, something I KNOW you will like . . . but it’ll have to go in the next post because this one is too crazy long. Love you Girls and Boys . . . Downton Abbey Forever! XOXO

I can’t believe it is over already. They really need to make it last another month or so and I can’t believe we have to wait until January 2016. Love, love, love Downton!!

  2. Janet in Rochester says:

As always, loved the “Downton” finale but, except for Isobel and Lord Merton, a lot of “situations” seemed to get tied up in neat little bundles and resolved a little too easily for me. No real cliffhangers to speak of, IMO anyway. Does anyone else think that’s a bit odd? Could Julian F actually have let someone else write this one?? I’m guessing that Isobel wasn’t all that head-over-heels for his Lordship, or she wouldn’t have let some would-be stepchildren spoil things. Does make me wonder what the next season will bring, though. Maybe this time, Cora and Robert will be murder suspects? Ooohh. Or even more exciting, Violet? Maybe she’ll develop dementia, think she’s a young Countess again, and off that miserable Russian princess. Maybe Robert’s illness will become slightly more serious, Tom will be convinced to stay & help out for a while and Mary & Edith will BOTH fall for him, provoking some wickedly-delicious sister/cat fights, before Edith finds out she’s pregnant with Tom’s baby. Then Michael Gregson will suddenly turn up out of nowhere. Dunh-dunh-duunnnnnh… I guess the possibilities are endless. Must be difficult for Julian. There are so many directions he could take things. Difficult, and lots of fun. For now we’ll have to get our Downtown fix from old episodes, and imagine… Have a great week, Sue and Girlfriends! Spring is officially only days away, and I doubt any Spring will ever be welcomed with as much enthusiasm and flat-out joy than this one. Tired of white – wanna see Green!

  3. CarolK says:

WoW! That’s putting it in a nutshell now isn’t it……LOL

  4. Monique says:

Perfect recap of the greatest show on erath these last few years and more♥
Sorry to see it go till next year.It made Sundays even nicer.

  5. Suzanne says:

I can’t believe our precious Downton Abbey is coming to an end. The characters have become like family and I know we are all heavily invested in their storylines and their lives. Saturday Night Live has been on the air for 40 years…why can’t Downton Abbey going on for decades…I don’t think any of us are ready to have these people gone from our lives. Last night I cried tears of sadness and happiness and so lovely to see Barrow becoming a good guy when just last year we were hoping something bad would happen to him. And the “love affair” between the Dowager and Isobel…so much fun to watch these two. My heart is breaking at the thought that after next January, we will see them no more. A movie would be fine but I’d be a lot happier if the series would just go on and on…

    • sbranch says:

What I love is that there are all sorts of personalities, just like a real family, and we more or less love them all!

  6. Bonnie says:

So glad for your commentary. It takes me awhile to pick up on the lovely British accent and I miss some things. I was tickled pink of Carson’s proposal, but I wish I had seen the wedding of Rose.

Like you I love the hats and it bothers me I can’t find any lovely hats here in my neighborhood. I’m not a teen so can’t wear what hangs at Target and Wal Mart. 🙂

    • sbranch says:

Rose had a low key wedding. . . they are not BIG on weddings as we would like, but her dress was glorious! She was all in gold. Yes, we need the good stuff!

    • Marie W. says:

Simply go to the PBS Masterpiece website and watch the episode
you missed again. It will be available for a week or two after airing—not
there forever—-but you can catch up on any of this season you may have missed there.

  7. Debby Suovanen says:

Delightfully delicious Downton! Did anyone else notice that there were five (count them -5!) marriage proposals this season?! Mary got one, Rose, Lady Violet, Isobel and finally, Mrs. Hughes. What a romantic season! It’s a credit to good storytellers that so many people are fans of this show. Great actors, great costuming, great producers and great directors! It all comes together quite well and no one wants it to end. Just like your books, Susan – we always want more because they are just what we love! Well, I think I speak for all of your fans when I say – I have plenty of bookshelf space, so keep them coming! When can we pre-order?!

    • sbranch says:

Wow, no I didn’t count them, love that — proposals are such wonderful things! Preordering, I’m saving until I make sure I have the book right . . . I want to have more of it done.

  8. MarySue Knight says:

Embarrassed to admit that though I was fighting my exhaustion I fell asleep during the 2 hour episode. I woke up so sad that I missed I didn’t know how much of our lovely show. I distinctly remember thinking Susan will fill me in! Thank you friend-I’ve-never-met.

    • sbranch says:

I hope it was OK, you know there are lots of places you can go to see it if you want. I think they replay it on the PBS website for about a week, and then there’s ON DEMAND if you have it, plus you can get the DVD’s . . . fyi. xoxo

  9. Sherry says:

I still think Tom and Edith ought to get together and raise their children in America where Edith can have a bit more freedom to be the strong woman she is. Tom would certainly let her be herself.

  10. Candy Charters says:

Oh, Susan – I’m new to your blog, but as an ardent Downton Abbey fan (I do have the “Keep Calm and Downton On” t-shirt from Anglotees….among many others….), I have to let you know how tickled I’ve been with your recaps of the previous Sundays’ episodes. You are so SPOT ON!!

  11. Renee M. says:

Dear Susan – Tossing DA aside a moment. Two books? About romance? I wonder if they are autobiographical? That is such the berries and good news. I can not wait to pre-order. Oh boy!

My predictions for next season’s Downton –
    There will be three weddings.
    A child will be born.
Another cast member will need to be written off because of movie/and or other commitments.
    Better not be Violet!
American will finally get her just due, Boston and New York I’d say.
Hopefully, that new pup will show up as it didn’t for Christmas!

Did you all hear Mr. Fellows is in discussion with NBC to write a series about The Gilded Age? I dare say, it would be pleasant to have first dibs for a change!

    Thank you Susan!
    Renee M.

My predictions are usually not in keeping with Mr. Fellow’s imagination. Ah well.
There was so much going on during Sunday’s finale, my head was spinning.

    • sbranch says:

I know, he goes six ways from Sunday. I’m THRILLED about The Gilded Age . . . trying NOT to be too excited, because so far, I only relate to it as a rumor, but I’ve seen some of the houses in Newport and New York, and if it really does happen, which we have every reason to believe it will, this could be a whole lot of fun.

      • Deb W says:

Newport……..doesn’t Cora’s mother have a house in Newport? If not a prequel, might we have some of Cora’s American ancestors cheekily appear in Julian’s new period drama?

Back to Downtown, I found myself strangely soft-hearted toward Cora’s brother at the end of season 4. I would like to see him re-appear in some manner, even if only in letters from Tom from America. Perhaps he could provide some capital to his nephew-in-law, and set Tom up in his own business?

        • sbranch says:

She must. Everybody who was anybody did! 🙂 (not real not real) Cora’s relatives could be a big help in America!

          • Renee M. says:

As I surf the web during lunch today, it seems Duchess Kate will be visiting the London set next week. Should be fun! I see Ms. Rivera, First Lady of Mexico visited with one of my favorite Royals, Sophie Countess of Wessex – I think it happened earlier today, London time.
Filming on location in Newport and New York would be fantastic!
            Cheers!

  12. marybeth says:

So excited over two new books! Would LOVE to pre-order if that becomes a possibility. Always so thankful for the joy of life shared here. What a happy group!! I was so inspired and encouraged by Vicki’s ‘long’ message!! So glad she shared!!

  13. LindaH (northern IN) says:

    Hi Susan,

I think I enjoy your commentary on DA about as much as seeing the actual episode! My favorite part of the last episode was the marriage proposal! Those two deserve some happiness, don’t they? I agree with you about Tom leaving. He keeps talking about it, but maybe that’s to build up the suspense, and he’ll really decide to stay next season, but because of which of his sister-in-laws, do you think? Also, do you think Anna really pushed what’s-his-name to his death? Of course he deserved it, but it doesn’t sound like the law back then would forgive a woman for any actions in such a circumstance. She and John really deserve some happiness and freedom from these nasty situations!

Really looking forward to your next book and I hope you go on another book tour and stop in northern Indiana!

  14. Patsy in Nixa, MO says:

I just heard that Violet’s house is actually a private home called Byfleet Manor in Surrey. They serve afternoon tea. Good website with photos.

  15. Mia Sophia says:

Thank you, Susan for sharing Downton Abbey with us all…frame by frame. I love that show and all I have to do is hear the theme music to start jumping for joy. Now the l-o-n-g wait until next season! I am already mourning the loss of Violet after season six, since she said she will not be returning to the show. 🙁 But, as the English say…Keep Calm and Carry On.

Beside, we will have your new books (2) to look forward to…YAY to that!

  16. Loved this episode even though I don’t love that it is the last one for another 9 months. The clothes in this episode were wonderful. When she walked into the prison in that red coat,,,,, breathtaking!! I truly loved the development of Robert this season. He is coming along with the changing times even though it was with abundant protest throughout much of the journey. I am so sad Tom and Sibby are leaving, but as you, I won’t believe it until I see it. And dear Isobel and the Dowager. Surely they are the picture of Best Friends Forever. I am so very sad the season is over. Somehow it helped us through this awful winter. It is like when we finish reading a wonderful book and we continue to think about the characters and wonder what they might be doing. A fine reason to look forward to the new bookSSSS we will soon be reading and loving…. can’t wait until you tell us the first one is here!!!! 🙂

  17. Cindy K. Beranek,from PA says:

Dear Susan, Did I miss an answer to my Blue White Tea Cup and Saucer on page 195 of A Fine Romance? Please tell us the story of this picture? I was away and just got back home. Sorry I know you are very busy. Thank You again.

    • sbranch says:

No, I did answer it . . . but I’ll tell you here too . . . they gave me that cup in a tea room in England and I took a photo of it. I didn’t really look at the bottom, I just thought it was so pretty!

      • Cindy K. Beranek,from PA says:

Thank You so much!!!!!!!!!! Hope all is going well with your dad! We are still praying for him!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

        • sbranch says:

Me too, it’s two hours earlier there. So Arizona time is 11:30 am, he’s in it now . . . only takes 2 hours each day, so we’ll hear from him (when and if he gets around to it . . . I know he’ll call, I will just be patient.) He stays in a hotel the whole three days.

  18. Connie From Abilene says:

Thank you Susan, I hope I didn’t spoil it for you!!! Soooo sorry

  19. Verla says:

Love the Downton posts. I was thinking…… and we need a new bookmark. How ’bout a Downton bookmark? Looking forward to the new book!

  20. Cheyenne Renard says:

Hello Beautiful Sue, I am so sad about Downton Abby. I cried it was so tender . I hope your staying warm. Just wanted to check in and comment. MY close friend of like 37 yrs passed away and i have been crying since last Thurs earily am. Her Name is Racquel Churchward and they live in Huntington Beach Ca where i lived before Henderson Nv. I will miss her all the days of my life. I mention this because you really have to treasure every moment. And when you have great Girlfriends like you are and the other girl friends never never take advantage thinking it will always be the same or its no big deal , Im here to tell you all its a huge big big deal. Im sure most of you are like me n Sue where you love and cherish your close girlfriends who are like your own sister or family member. I am trying to go to the funeral but its been so hard on me, but I have to remember its not about ME. I love her family , her child hood sweet heart Donald and her 4 wonderful great Children who are adults now. Sending my love to you all XXX Miss you love this latest post Love to Handsome Joe too XXX n kitties meow

  21. Cheyenne Renard says:

Oh Dear Sue, I was up set that the sweet dog died on the show, it made me cry and think gee couldnt Julian come up with a different story. Just wondered if any one else was up set at that idea, that he went through with boo hooo

    • sbranch says:

I think the dog had been on the show for 15 years of “show time” so they decided it didn’t make sense that it lived much longer than that, story wise — but we all hated it anyway!

  22. Melinda DeRouin says:

This season was so much better than last season. It was nice to Barrow become a decent person. I hate to have to wait until January 2016 for more and to know that will the end!!

  23. Cathi says:

What a fabulous recap of the last episode of what I think was perhaps the most enjoyable season! It is so sad to think that our Sunday evenings will be without Downton Abbey now until next January. Why, oh why, can’t we see it at the same time as it’s aired in Britain?

    • sbranch says:

That would make so much sense, then no one would be forced to keep such a fun secret for so long!

  24. Carol C says:

Yes, everyone is right, it was the best season ender they could have done!! I have nothing to add. Also so happy to hear that your new book will be out soon. Before internet and blogging I used to haunt the bookstores to get your newest book. Now we know when it is coming and can often pre-order!! Anticipation is a wonderful thing!!!

    • sbranch says:

It’s SUCH a wonderful thing! I hated it when I was a little kid waiting for Christmas, but now I love it.

  25. Pat Triska says:

I am sad that I have to wait all these months before I get my fix of “Downton”. I want it to never end!!!! The clothing on the show gives me inspiration of items to sew. I can see a pillow with lace, maybe an old handkerchief and white buttons. Hummm, maybe that will happen. I love the mostly soft delicate colors of the clothing. Now I will be on the count down until next January.

Also awaiting for your books to be finished!!! Glad to hear the first one is almost ready.

    • sbranch says:

I’ve been thinking about making myself a new linen suit! I used to make all my clothes, why the heck not! Of course I would need a clone to do it, but maybe someday!

      • Mary in Phoenix says:

Keep Dreaming Sista! It will happen some day! You seem to make everything happen 🙂 I used to sew my clothes, and quilt too. It’s a comforting thought … as is going in a fabric store. My best friend Mary (whom you met at dinner) designed and made my wedding dress. Sewing was such a big part of our lives. It can happen again … because we dream it will ♥ xo

  26. Gina P. from NY says:

Dear Susan: thank you so much for that Downton recap! What a great episode – so much packed into that 90 or so minutes! I will miss Rose and Atticus! You’re right, she is so beautiful, wears those clothes so beautifully – the hairpieces, the hats, dresses, plus that lovely English Rose complexion of hers – makes her all the more gorgeous! Lord Sinderby doesn’t deserve such a wonderful daughter in law! She truly is Cinderella! The scenes with Spratt and Denker were truly hysterical! Then when Violet came in to “sample” Denker’s chicken broth (made by hers truly) and loved it, the look on Spratt’s face was priceless! The Anna/Bates storyline really needs to be put to rest, right? Let’s let these two live in happiness… it would be nice to see them with little Bates’ running around the cottage! But is anything that easy on Downton Abbey? Hmmmm

Was happy that Violet rescued Princess Irina and that she acknowledged that the Princess had once rescued her from making a big mistake when she was young and had thoughts of running off with Prince Kuragin – who, by the way – needs to rid himself of that “mullet” pronto! The bonding between herself and Isobel is a delight to watch. I am also thinking we are going to see something more of Mary and Mr. Talbot! I think Mary likes those fast cars… LOL As for Mrs. Hughes and Mr. Carson – lovely! I too, was hoping for a kiss, but we had to settle for her calling him her “old booby” and him shedding tears of happiness.

Latest rumors on the internet: Maggie Smith thinking about leaving after next season (she doesn’t want to age to 110); and Julian Fellowes saying that as far as he is concerned, he hasn’t heard that Downton is ending after Season 6! Anyway, he hasn’t been given this news to date – so perhaps there is hope that this wonderful addiction will continue?

  27. Carol says:

Wow.. I was so waiting for your Blog…to discuss the Show…I cried 2 times, and 3 thinking next season is the last…OMGosh….so sad. Susan you were right on with all that I noticed and heard…I was right with you. The hats make me crazy, they are so awesome. For the person who wrote the Blog that said she can never find hats like that.. go to Flea Markets and Antique Stores…they are there…New and Old…
Mrs. Hughes and Carson…wow…and it took a whole Season, from that famous Beach Scene..so happy for them. so much to know, what happens to everyones lives. I hope Mary is NICER this last Season..I wanted Mary or Edith to pair up with Tom..more so Edith.
I am already watching again, and I am sure you have Susan.
Thanks for all your thoughts and discussions…I have not been able to discuss with anyone else yet, and it feels soooo good to discuss this show..it is so awesome..all of it, the clothes, the Scenery, oh on and on, everything is fabulous. Now….MR. SELFRIDGE….ALSO A GREAT SHOW…

  28. Susan on Bainbridge Island, Washington state says:

I JUST NOW, read that Maggie Smith is not leaving Downton Abbey and she said she will stick with the series as long as they decide to keep it going….Officially, they will not make that announcement until series 6 is underway….SO, ok gals! it sounds as if the 6th season might not be the last..there is a slim chance that it may continue…..keeping my fingers crossed..That was the news I read today!!!! I hope I hope I hope..it keeps going!!!!! and going!!!!! What do you think, Susan? wouldn’t it be GRAND!

  29. Ann Keehner says:

Thought for sure you would include Violet and Isabel in the beautiful flower garden setting enjoying their tea.

    • sbranch says:

That’s the problem with a two hour show, I left out so much. Mary singing, the tree, the dancing!

  30. Kathie says:

Two books? That’s too delightful. Do hurry, dear, but take your time and enjoy the process….Well, Downton outdid itself, surely. Mary looked at Mr. Talbot in their last scene as if he were a Christmas present! Talbot and Mary, Edith and Lord Hexum’s cousin…..they could very ably run Downton. Oh no! Do I have to give up on Mary and Tom and Edith and Michael? Anna and Mr. Bates cuddled up on Christmas Eve, at last……the case will be dropped and they will have a little Bates to raise up. Well, we can dream, can’t we? I mean, we CAN. It’s just sooooooo hard to wait…….for your books and Downton.

  31. Zana Carter says:

    reporternews.com/news/local-news/weather/downton-abbey-finale-showing-at-paramount-theatre-an-escape-from-the-cold_81522593

This is a link to the Abilene Reporter News in Abilene, Texas. They had the finale on the big screen in a restored 1920 picture show and people came in costume. I live in Houston now and I wish I could have been in Abilene for this.

  32. Suellen Dehnke says:

I had heard Julian Fellowes say that next season was the last season too but did you see his interview in the NY Times this week? He says the show is now owned by NBC Universal and he has no idea when it will end. YAY!

    • sbranch says:

Yes, but wouldn’t they need HIM to make it go on?

      • Kathie says:

Oh dear. Will NBC turn Downton into a sit-com starring American 20-somethings and inserting their “special” brand of everything into it: more sex, fewer morals; more shock, fewer tender moments; more Hollywood/NewYork/San Francisco, no Yorkshire. I’m wringing my hands and my brow is furrowed…….Hang tight, Julian!

  33. Carol Maurer~~~~ Kennewick, Wa says:

TWO BOOKS!!! Love it!! Can’t wait to get my hands on them!
Your post of Downton Abbey was just fantastic! Taking pictures off the TV was a really good idea. One I’ve never thought of doing before.

A new give away is exciting! I’ll be sure to keep my eye out on the next post. Give aways are always so much fun.

    xoxo,
    Carol M

  34. Kathy Lloyd says:

Am so sad Downton Abbey is done for another season. Loved Robert in this episode…he can be so adorable when he wants to. Mary looks fabulous in hats..loved her red coat that she wore to visit Anna. All the clothes are perfection – country tweeds, ball gowns, etc. and to have people to care for all their stuff including shoe polishing, jewelry cleaning, it’s incredible! I like that Mary may have a new love interest who can keep up with her sassiness. The actor who plays him, Matthew Goode, was in one of my favorite movies, “Leap Year”, with Amy Adams and he played an Irishman in that..so cute. I guess. I’ll have to get my DA fix by re watching the DVDs. Too bad there’s only one more season..booo!

  35. Bravo! Lovely! I laughed out loud. You are adorable, Susan Branch. Thank you for the best-ever Downton Abbey recap.

  36. Susan Martin says:

Such a wonderful recap! 10 and 1/2 months is too long to wait…sigh.

  37. Susan Martin says:

OH! Mr. Carson and Elsie – how perfect! And Mr. Bates coming back to Anna! 10 & 1/2 months is soooooo far away!

  38. Faye Fern says:

I know this is off subject, but I just want to let you know how much I love turning the page on my Susan Branch wall calendar at the beginning of each month…and then I find that I miss the prior month. I still need to make the Feb. ribs. They sound delish!

    • sbranch says:

Nice to hear that . . . I know . . . every time I’m painting for a calendar I think, this will only be up one month and then gone! But that’s OK, I’ll use it again someday!

      • I commented earlier today for the first time – and here I go again already! Your calendar pictures last longer than a month – I tape my old favorite pictures to the insides of my cupboard doors, and they make me smile everyday all year!! Love all of your stuff – you are very talented.

  39. Penny H. from Oceanside, CA says:

Sigh…..! Just awesome, and we have such great things to look forward to! Elsie and Charles wedding, and Henry Talbot gets my vote for Eye Candy of the night and someone who definite looks like he could befuddle Mary (opposites attract?!), and Isobel and Violet beautiful women that they are, what will they stir up in the next season? Then there was a very soft and tender moment between Tom and Edith, hmmmmm. Much to think about and remember til next year! Thank you for your wonderful post!

  40. Patricia Dorwin says:

I love hearing Lord Grantham called “Donk” by his grandchildren.
Stowell is one of my favorite British actors. I remember him as the Inn Keeper on Les Miz.

  41. Diana from Ohio says:

So happy you are going to be giving us two books instead of one. Absolutely love your books. I know it takes a lot of work but they are worth it for us the readers.
As everyone else so sad to see Downtown Abbey end. I think Rose and Atticus will be back as they add so much for the younger generation in the great series. Plus the young man that plays Atticus stated on Manorly Speaking that they would not be in the first episode next year but indicated they would be in the following episodes. Don’t want to wish the year away but always look forward to Downtown Abbey for the last 5 years. Glad it is in January and February when need some great scenery with the winter blowing outside.

  42. Marianne says:

Just a wonderful Downton Abbey season. So enjoyed it. Intrigued by the new character who – with some hope – might be the new man in Mary’s life? We didn’t get enough information about him. Also – his friend and Edith? A possibility? I could see that. They just seemed like such a nice couple when they were talking. And – I’d like to say – I’m very happily looking forward to your book/s.

  43. Donna says:

I am so sad to see it end. Way too soon for me and January so far away. Thank you for sharing it all in pictures. Sigh…..

  44. Carla TePaske says:

    Hi Friend,
You are so fun. 🙂 I love talking Downton Abbey with you.

How exciting for you, great news. I can not wait for your next book.
    Love You,
    Carla

  45. Kirsten Anne Wichert says:

I was going to ask about pre-ordering the new book but you’ve already answered my question in Debby’s post. I really am trying to be patient.

Nine episodes doesn’t really feel like a full season, does it? I think there should be at least twelve! It will be so long to wait for Downton again! Your recap of the season finale was flawless. I love the photo of Petey watching snuggled on the sofa. Did he notice George wearing his sailor outfit? The watercolor of you as a child with your frightened face was perfect for Danker’s expression when the broth went down the drain! Your illustration made me laugh!

  46. Shannon (Pennsylvania) says:

Thoughts of Blog Daddy and prayers for his speedy recovery as he begins his stem cell transplant procedure today. Hugs, hugs, and more hugs.

    • sbranch says:

Yes, you are right Shannon and thank you so much for your thoughtfulness. It doesn’t seem like a difficult procedure, no pain, no side effect, non-invasive unless you count needles, and the outcome has so much good to it, but it’s still nerve-wracking when they are working on someone you love. Doing something so odd. And miraculous. Fingers crossed, he said he’d call me tonight.

      • Julia says:

Please let us know. I’ve already said prayers for his good
results today and will continue for the next few days but
he is so spirited that I think he’ll do great!!!!!!!!!!! (Those
        are for Blog Dad)

        • sbranch says:

Me too, Great. Can’t wait to hear from him. Keeping busy so I don’t think about it too much!

      • Susan P. says:

        Susan.

Prayers for your Dad. Also some for his wife and you and all of your family as you wait for the good news. Love, Susan P.

  47. Rosanna says:

Susan – there were just too many ‘moments’ in this last episode of DA that were ‘favorites’ – I had to watch it a second time online – thank you PBS – to savor them all again.
I’ve always been a great reader of anything British – in particular biographies, autobiographies and what I call ‘social histories’ of the various eras – late 1800’s to mid 1900’s — and I sometimes think that Julian Fellowes has been looking over my shoulder as he seems to pick up on details – even how there was even a ‘pecking order’ within the household staff where everyone ‘knew their place’ not to mention all the gossipy peccadilloes of the upper echelon of society – shocking! 🙂

I absolutely ADORED Mr. Carson’s proposal – asking Mrs. Hughes if she wanted be ‘stuck’ with him………….I wonder if it didn’t make some people think about giving or receiving their own marriage proposals – perhaps Mr. Carson wasn’t quite so ‘eloquent’ – but you must admit it was really from the heart.

SO many story lines that can come from this season finale – but touching on only one: I’m hoping that Edith gets matched up with that third cousin of Lord Hexham — he may be the lowly estate agent now – but we know how things could change when it comes to English inheritance! I think it is about time poor Edith gets a break and has a happier love life………….time she got away from being Mary’s verbal dartboard.
(Am I the only one in the world that doesn’t like Mary?)

    • sbranch says:

Yes, Julian Fellowes has a great eye! I hear that he grew up on the fringe of the aristocracy — his aunt gave him the immortal line “What is a weekend?” He’s also very good at anything to do with the heart! I don’t think you’re the only one that doesn’t like Mary, but for some reason she’s got something that makes me root for her to get better! Unlike the hideous Miss Bunting.

      • Rosanna says:

Oh I’m just waiting for some sort of dope slap to Mary’s prickly personality and then she will be nicer but I can’t for the life of me think what it could be………..maybe her father needs to yell at her like he did to Miss Bunting – now there is another unlovable personality if ever there was one!

        • sbranch says:

All that has to happen is for darling Julian to write the perfect little words to come out of her mouth and we will all fall in love with her. He’s got the power!

    • Kathy B. says:

No you’re not, I’m not a big fan of her either. Sometimes I think you feels she better than anyone else in the family.

    • Sylvia in Seattle says:

NO! You are NOT the only one.

      • Rosanna says:

Oh goodness! I feel like I’ve started a not so secret chapter of the “I Dislike Mary” club!

She just rubs me the wrong way – one of those personalities who seems to have it all – with the exception of warmth and kindness that is.

  48. Jack says:

Why do you have that big pile of raw hamburger sitting next to Petey in that first picture ?

  49. Nancy says:

Thanks so much for the recap, Susan. I did watch the show and loved reliving it through your summary. Thank you!

  50. Margot~~~Virginia Beach says:

I really liked your red and white checked pillows from IKEA, so when my sister was there on Monday she looked and couldn’t find them. How long ago did you pick your’s up?
We watched Miss Potter last night and I loved it! Arnie was impressed with her land purchases and donations! I could finally understand the process of watercolor painting and I thought of you!!! OOXX

    • sbranch says:

Maybe a week or two before I put them on the blog — they were in a big basket and on sale, so I bet they didn’t last too long. If you ever get a chance to read a biography about Beatrix Potter, you’ll be amazed at all she did! That movie, though, was wonderful . . .

  51. Julia says:

You know I’ve admired your work for a long time. Remember I still have all
of the pages from Country Living but I didn’t know about your books and
calendars until about 3 or 4 years ago. Anyway, yesterday I found the
Girlfriends book staring me in the face at the animal rescue thrift store.
Now I only need 2 more. Girlfriends is so wonderful, especially for our
age people. Love it. I knew about the Beatles but last night it reminded
me of when I was 15 or 16 my mom found out that Frankie Avalon was
coming into our airport so she let me skip school and took me to meet
the plane. Don’t know that he was too happy to see me but he did
autograph the polaroid shot that my mother took! What a mom, huh?

  52. Diane says:

Whatever will I do now that there’s no Downton to watch on Sunday nights?! Okay Susan, please hurry and write your new book. I can hardly wait. My husband and I are planning to get to the Biltmore Estates before their Downton clothing exhibition ends on Mary 25th. Hope you can do that too. Biltmore is great anytime, but with the Downton costumes, it ought to be even better.

Are you watching Grantchester that comes on right after Downton? It’s a good one, too.

    Diane in North Carolina

  53. Patti from California says:

Hi, Susan: My favorite parts of the episode – when Sybie tells Robert that Marigold should call him “Donk” when she leaves, when Bates says he would cut off his arm if it would help Anna and Barrow says “that wouldn’t be sensible, we don’t want you wobbly at both ends” (couldn’t stop laughing at that one), and, of course, when Carson finally ask Mrs. Hughes to marry him and she called him a booby and said YES! So much to look forward to next season. I think I’m going to have to pull out my Season 1 DVD in order to avoid Downton withdrawal . . . So looking forward to the new book (now to be two new books!). I’m rereading “A Fine Romance” and making notes for my own trip to England (a couple of years away yet), that my husband and I are planning for our 40th wedding anniversary! Blessings to you, Joe and the kitties.

  54. Christine Cerniauskas says:

Good Morning Susan! What a wonderful surprise to see a recap of downton. The photos were excellent! Did you watch The Great British Bakeoff? I live in New Hampshire and Pbs spoiled the finale by interrupting so many times for the fund raisers that I could not enjoy it! Thank Goodness they did not do that when downton was on! Can’t wait for your new books!

    • sbranch says:

They should save that stuff for the reruns! Thank you Christine!

    • chris consentino says:

oooh. where in NH?? we lived in Alton…on Lake Winnipesaukee….till sept. 2013. now in middle of VA….grandbabies in DC….and this very morning, on THE WEATHER CHANNEL..( HOW IMPRESSIVE!!) was a piece about our dear old Alton Bay…it has the only airplane runway….on water.(at the so. end of the lake) in the lower 48 states. sooo, hubby got to enjoy that piece, and then tell me about it. the ice on the lake is presently 24 to 30 INCHES THICK!!! wow. that has happened in the past, but this yr has been just amazingly cold, snow-y and icy, for sure!!!! our friends and family have had about 8 feet snow…AND more on the way. wow.

  55. Pom Pom says:

I loved it – when it was finally all sewn up. I kept thinking, “Why is it so “pins and needles” and how is it going to end happy for the season?” I cried. LOVED the whole thing so much! Isn’t it fun that Rose is the new Cinderella? YAY!

  56. Kathy B. says:

I totally love your blog, for one thing it’s so pretty, you are so talented and even though I’ve never met you I feel like we’re good friends. Downton Abby is my all time favorite TV show. I’m so sad this coming season #6 will be the last. What will I do at 9:00 on Sunday night?
Glad to hear about the new book and looking forward to reading it.
    Your friend…

  57. Elaine Koenig says:

Thanks for the wonderful remembrance of the last episode of DA. I have loved all of them. Does any one object to how quickly they go through the scenes? You don’t dare leave to make the popcorn, you will miss out on some crucial happening! I always have to watch the repeat broadcast to see what I missed! I want this series to go on and on! It is a long time till January!

    • sbranch says:

So true! The second watching is even better than the first, at least you have the lay of the land.

  58. Diane says:

First, lots of good thoughts for your Dad today as he begins his stem cell transplant.
Now, a question for you and the girlfriends: Why doesn’t Edith seem to have a lady’s maid? Cora has Baxter, Mary has Anna. Did Edith choose not to have one? Hmmm, my husband and I have obviously missed something somewhere along the way.

    • sbranch says:

VERY GOOD QUESTION!!! Hmmm. Does anyone know?

      • Margot~~~Virginia Beach says:

Come to think of it…Sybil didn’t have one either. Maybe it is a coming of age thing?

      • Rosanna says:

Well, I’m no expert on this – other than what I’ve read….but I think it might be that Edith has to get by with one of the housemaids — she’s not a married woman – and until someone reached that level, they were not ‘allowed’ to have a maid solely for their own. (And too, the family has had to economize of late – but perhaps with the sale of that painting they could loosen the purse strings enough to get Edith her own maid! 🙂 )

        • sbranch says:

Oh, I didn’t know you had to be married to get a Ladies Maid! Interesting, and once again, we see that in those days, without a man, thou art nothing! Yes, if they can get another footman (for Daisy and Barrow) they should be able to get Edith a maid!

          • Julia says:

My thinking is that Mary, being the eldest
daughter, with no male heirs, is of the
highest rank. Could that be it?
I think Tom will go to America with Edith.
It would get her out of her situation with
            Marigold.

          • sbranch says:

Her son George is actually the heir.

          • Rosanna says:

If you remember – way, way back in the very beginning all three sisters were given the services of Anna – who was also pulling duty as a housemaid. Poor thing even had to help ‘hide the body’!! Then when Mary married, Anna got a bit of a promotion to being the ladies maid for Mary.
Gets a bit complicated – but the ‘rules’ were that married women were the only ones served breakfast in bed – and it was their ladies maid who brought the breakfast, etc.

I know — probably much more detail than you needed………..but its still fun to know all these inconsequential things 🙂

          • sbranch says:

It really is, there seem to be rules for everything.

  59. Loribeth says:

What a wonderful recap of an amazing show. So bittersweet that we have to wait a whole year to see more. No one is used to waiting for anything these days but there is something to be said about the sweet anticipation. I am a doll maker and I think I will make a little family of Downton Abbey dolls to keep me going till 2016… complete with amazing hats!

  60. Ladyheartwell of Berkeley Springs says:

    Oh, Dearest Susan,
If we didn’t have you to comment on Downton Abbey, it just wouldn’t be the same! It’s like having you as our own fashion commentator from that era and it’s wonderful!!! (It would be difficult to comment on some of the fashions these days.) I’m right there with your thoughts of the one-of-a-kind hats, dresses, coats, etc. you wrote about. Each piece was so glamorous and yet elegant in a way that made each person look so well put together without undue attention to any one part of her ensemble. Mary and her mother seems to know just how to wear them splendidly.

As I think about their lifestyle I’m wondering how many times a day would they need to change clothes. No wonder they needed help!! Even so, I think we have learned how to dress better, even on a limited budget and a good imagination. Thank you, Susan for your blogs and I simply cannot wait for your next book to be published. By the way, I LOVE the photos of all the birds outside your kitchen window!!!

    Karen (who married Bruce)

    • sbranch says:

Yes, that changing clothes thing, it must have taken up their whole entire day. I wonder how often they took baths in-between — just wondering.

  61. Marianne says:

Today, while making breakfast, I glanced out at our grill where we put peanuts for the bigger birds and a squirrel was sitting there eating them. A cardinal flew down and started to land on her back! It immediately realized it wasn’t on the cold metal it was used to landing on and flew away. The squirrel just kept on eating. Didn’t faze her at all. So cute I had to share it with you. My niece said it reminded her of the picture that’s going around of the woodpecker carrying a weasel. I think I saw that picture online somewhere.

  62. jamie hopkins says:

    Downton forever! 🙂

  63. Karen V from CT says:

My favorite parts from the finale: Mrs. Hughes and Carson! Tears of joy at this happy ending! I also loved Mary’s gorgeous coat, the one you showed that she wears to the prison. I was a bit worried about Robert’s health, I was so relieved they weren’t going somewhere dark with that subplot. I also love the Molesley and Baxter relationship, two underdogs sticking together to do good. Love it!
So excited about your new book! Can’t wait!

  64. Amylisa says:

I agree, a Downton movie, please! Especially if next season will indeed be the last one. Don’t even want to think about that. All the best shows are leaving. I loved Carson’s proposal! I want a Carson, he’s like a big gruff teddy bear. He’d be the best grandpa for my kids. 🙂 I can’t wait to see “Rose” in Cinderella! It comes out next week!! Also can’t wait for your new book Susan!!

    • sbranch says:

Wishing you a Carson dear Amylisa, closing eyes and saying, a Carson for Amylisa. What a good name for a Movie!

  65. Susan, I have loved all of Downton Abbey too. I love all the costumes and the hats are gorgeous! So why don’t you design another hat quilt pattern? One with some of the hats featured on the show? I missed your first pattern before it left, but now it would be a lovely way for us to enjoy all these luscious designs. Thanks for your wonderful posts!! Hugs, Jane

  66. Krista Anderson says:

This isn’t really related to DA, which I also love, but I saw this Peter Rabbit-themed wedding post online, and it so reminded me of you! Enjoy!!

  67. Just checking in to see how your Dad is feeling today, Susan. He has been in my thoughts all day. I know how hard it is to be so far away. Sending big hugs!
    Love,
    Dawn
    ♡♡

    • sbranch says:

I just got off the phone with him. He said it was a piece of cake. No different than having blood drawn. He was there for about an hour and fifteen minutes . . . and felt nothing strange during it at all, afterward they decided they’d rather drive home than stay in a hotel, (1½ hr drive) so he’s home, in a really good mood, and going back for round 2 tomorrow. Thank you for asking!

      • chris consentino says:

oh, soooo good to hear of your phone-chat with your Dad!! whew! prayers will continue thru next few days. how typical of those in “that” generation….driving to get home….when we “squishies” would stay in the hotel just for the fun-of-it. thank you for keeping us all posted….blessings on dearest Jack. xo

        • sbranch says:

He was eating a grilled cheese sandwich when I spoke with him, half the reason to get himself home, I’m sure. Grilled Cheese, the RIGHT way (the way he makes it!) 🙂

      • Such wonderful news!! We are all so happy to hear that the treatment is going so well. Big hugs!! ♡♡

        • Jack says:

Hi girls — Today is Monday and the difference I notice so far is like a growing strength to be able to function in doing the ordinary everyday things ….such as making my breakfast , or working on the pellet stove … And getting dressed for the day
While staying awake and with it all day , I can go longer without oxygen too…so I’ m now feeling some improvements
I can deffinitly appreciate –all good news….Thank you all for your concern and good wishes , I will soon try to get back to being a total aggravation to Sue and we can have some fun.
Today’s styles aren’t really that bad compared to those on Downton …so uncomplicated ,,, no front , no back with a couple straps to hold up an almost no bottom . The beauty is they cost about three times as much and only use a third of the cloth.

          • sbranch says:

See? I told you, Girls 🙂

          • Tawni urrutia says:

Two big thumbs up to you Jack! You have an awfully big cheering squad here at Susan’s blog. I like to think of you as our Commander in Chief of the peanut gallery! Love and good wishes to you for continued strength and fiestiness!
            ❌⭕️❌⭕️,
            Tawni Urrutia in Lodi, Ca

          • sbranch says:

            LOL, Tawni!

          • Vicki says:

Big smile on my face right now. Love the clothes description. Glad the procedure helped. Strength is good! It’s a good week for good news. The oncologist told me yesterday that he doesn’t need to see me as often anymore; I’ll take that with an extra cube of sugar, please!! Maybe add a dollop of whipped cream, too!

          • sbranch says:

I’m with you Vicki! Sweeten it up!

  68. Paula A. says:

I was so afraid Robert was going to drop dead of a heart attack! Then so thankful he didn’t! I will miss Tom and his level headedness. Maybe he won’t go. Or if he does, maybe he’ll return because of the Great Depression that hits America. Will have to wait and and see.

  69. Isabel says:

    Hi Susan,

I must be one of the VERY few who did not get into Downton Abbey. I have tried to watch several times and have stayed for a while, but because I did not see it from the beginning, I am SO confused. There are SO many people, relationships, etc. that I really do not know what is going on. I do like anything English. I looked forward to the Great British Baking Show and miss it now that it is over.

I notice that you are on Facebook but you are making it longer until you post on your blog. Is that because you are trying to finish the book? Whatever it is, miss your regular blogs.

    Hang in there for Spring.

    • sbranch says:

Yes, I’m trying to focus, it’s hard when I also wish to be in lots of other places, but I have to do it.

  70. Gail connelly says:

What a great finale! Loved it all, I cried when Carson proposed to Mrs.Hughes. Then again when Bates walked in and surprised Anna, I wish them happiness and maybe a baby next season. I can’t believe we have to wait another year for the next season.

    • sbranch says:

I say that every year. By the time it gets here, I say to myself, oh it was probably a figment of my imagination ~ it can’t be that good! And then it is!

  71. Mary Whiting says:

I dislike the thought of Sunday nights without Downton. My wish is to bring Tom back….Tom and Mary? Tom and Edith? Tom and Daisy? Just bring hime back, please. I will miss them all. Until 2016……

    • sbranch says:

Exactly how I feel, Tom and anybody, we just need Tom’s steadying influence, but of course, Tom, and anybody who will be nice to him! NOT Ms. Bunting.

  72. Kim says:

We just finished watching the finale last night. Oh, so many wonderful twists and turns! I want to slap Spratt! That man is errrrrrr!!! Enjoying your post going back over that episode! Julian Fellowes came through!

  73. TeriGrace says:

    Dear Susan,
I stumbled upon a themed wedding and instantly thought I must send the info onto you….. It’s a Peter Rabbit Wedding! pinkparasol.org/peter-rabbit-tea-party-inspire-bridals/
Thoroughly enjoyed the DA finale….. But not liking Tom and Sybbie moving away. I was hoping he and Edith would get together!
    Happy Writing, TeriGrace

  74. Barb says:

    Hello Susan,

Thank you for such a wonderful recap of all the episodes……I have enjoyed them so much! I am a big DownTown Abbey Fan……and love every episode and the last one was fantastic!

Yes……here is a little excitement we can all look forward to: The British release of the Movie “Cinderella” will be comming out on March 13th and guess whom has the starring role of “Cinderella?” While it’s (Lily James aka Lady Rose) and one of the Evil Stepsisters…….is being played by (Sophie McShera aka Daisy).

Excitment is building for your new books and many well wishes to your Dad!

    Hugs & Smiles
    Barb, Ludlow MA 🙂

  75. I just watched the last 35 minutes again (!!!) on the PBS website. And I cried again. Pure wonderfulness!

So much has been said about this last episode already, but I want to point out the artistry and flawlessness of the camera work here. Very, very impressive. I especially liked the sweep of the camera as Anna looked at the picture of herself and Bates – so much symbolism here.

It just gets better and better. Headed on the web now to see what I can glean about season 6. I want this to go on forever!

  76. Julia says:

Do you have a line of recipe cards? I had some note cards with the
cookie jar on the front that I always used for passing on recipes and
now they are all gone. Want more! Also, saw Shakespeare In Love
last night and there was Carson playing the old woman actress and
also Father Brown and Doc Martin were in it. I was really surprised.

    • sbranch says:

Yes, we do, go to the top of the blog where it says “shopping” click there and look for categories in the left hand column. It’s a little club over there in England! Luckily for us!

      • Julia says:

Thank you, didn’t think of that.
        Doing it now. Julia

        • sbranch says:

It became so difficult for me to tell people where to find things (in the stores, so much is “here today-gone tomorrow), it just seemed a lot easier to make our own store! Hope you find what you’re looking for, Julia!

  77. Jennie says:

I can see that I am jumping in at the wrong place, since I have not watched any Downton Abbey. I know, gasp! Especially considering my love for all things English, and especially tea time. But what I wanted to tell Susan is, I am about half way thru A Fine Romance and I love it! 🙂 It is, however, costing me quite a lot of money. So far I have bought 2 books about Beatrix Potter, the movie Miss Potter, and a music box that plays Home Sweet Home. I don’t blame you for this! In fact, I thank you (although my husband might not) for reintroducing me to Beatrix Potter and all things beautiful and British. And your book is so beautifully presented! I will be back when I have more spending money, to explore the wonderful world of Susan Branch. Thanks so much!

    • sbranch says:

Exactly what I hoped would happen! I’m so glad you like it Jennie — thank you for telling me!

  78. Dolores says:

How delightful this show is and how much I and many others will miss it until next year!!!! Boohoo!!!! And then after that I surely want to make the wish also for a movie too please. But what a joy it all has been, the characters, the clothes, the homes, the lovely stories…. I even have the opening theme song as my ringtone on my phone. It has been a lovely visit in the past.

  79. lin rader says:

What a show! Wow, I too love the hats…wish they would come back in fashion. Diane Keaton was the last gal to really emphasize hats as fashionable. I used to model hats in the sixties for the Macy store in Toledo, Ohio, my home town. At that time artists actually sketched hats and clothing for their newspaper ads. I still have some of the newspaper ads with little ole me modeling the latest in hats for the artist sketches. Best part was I got to keep the hats I modeled!! Wish I had them now. You have a great face for hats…believe me, I know! Get some and wear them. Let’s show the fashion world what they are missing! LOL Hats off to Joe (our beret fashion plate) and your sweet kitties. Love ya from 13 degree, snowy Rochester, Michigan.

  80. Ruth says:

Sob, sob, sob! Our cups run over. What a wonderful finale! As always, LOVE your comments. I see and hear it all again! Cannot wait for your new book–books! You have had a prosperous winter. I just read Caleb’s Crossing and thought of you and our visit to the Vineyard several years ago. Wonderful book. Rereading Annie Dillard’s The Maytrees. I am vicariously enjoying Cape Cod and the Vineyard!

  81. Sarah D. says:

I’ve had to avoid your blog this whole week because I only just now had a chance to watch the last episode. It was so wonderful and reading your recap was just as fun!

  82. Annelies says:

Oh my…..in a very busy week I finally find the time to catch up on one of the most wonderful DA episodes. I lost my trust of the “Christmas Special” when Matthew died. How cruel was that…..and this episode was also a three hanky!!!! Sipping tea, wishing we all still wore hats and missing Tom and Sybbie already. Time for another hanky. XXX

  83. Joy Harper says:

Okay, why is no one talking about my favorite character, Mr. Molsley? (Sp?) I just love his eagerness to help Bates and Anna, his chivalrous support of Mrs. O’Brien, and his accidentally drunk dancing a while back just cracked me up! He is just an unexplored deep character I would love to see more of. Anyone else?

    • sbranch says:

I adore him too. I almost expected a little something between — him and Daisy!

      • Joy Harper says:

Of course I meant Baxter, not O’Brien! I love his kind heart and always look at him with a smile!

    • Karen P. - Wisconsin says:

Yes, I love him, too! He and Baxter are perfectly suited for each other. Perhaps next season love will blossom for them. Daisy kind of had a little smirk on her face over the new young footman….can’t remember his name. Romance is thriving at Downton! And maybe Edith and the nice man from the hunt that she was paired with? I loved seeing her arm-in-arm with Papa! Sunday evening sure was lack-luster without The British Bake-off and Downton. Soon Call the Midwife and Mr. Selfridge, though.

      • Alice says:

Not sure why, I didn’t know there would be more episodes of Call the Midwife!!! My absolute favorite from that program is Chummy!

  84. Sharon Avinger says:

Love your comments on the DA finale! It’s fun to think about how all those loose ends will be tied up next season. And two books? Hooray! Can’t wait for those. I savored reading “A Fine Romance”. Surely I had a second life as an English woman! I am a tea-drinking-England-loving gal!

  85. Gail Buss says:

Hi Susan……..First I have to tell you that yes I loved Mary’s red coat but thought to myself if those buttons went all the way down the back they might chip and break when you sat down but at the very least would be uncomfortable sitting on them. I was so happy for Anna and Bates…….loved it. Then I cried with Mrs. Hughes and Mr. Carson…………so much love and not even one little kiss but that was the way it was back in the day! That’s how it should still be today. Get the know the “person” before you fall for them and certainly no hanky panky. (I don’t think I belong to this day and age sometimes.) I’m glad Rose is moving away since I don’t care for her, but I wish Tom Branson was staying on. Maybe he will come back since he will miss the family. I’m so happy Lord Grantham was so kind to Edith about accepting little Marrigold. He is a softy I think. I must say that Barrow outdid himself bringing the mistress there, but I think we all enjoyed it because no one likes Lord Sinderby at all. I guess his wife didn’t put 2 and 2 together when the child’s name was Daniel! I’m glad Violet didn’t marry Igor. I didn’t like him nor did I trust him. I think he wanted an easy life with her and I also think Isobel made the right decision not to marry. I also think Downton is so popular because now we have to wait again until January which we can’t wait to arrive. Well spring will be coming and we’ll be outside more and perhaps won’t miss it too much. Then we’ll be getting ready for all the fall activities, Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas. Then in January we can once again cozy up on Sunday evenings to Downton Abbey! Hugs, Gail xo

    • sbranch says:

I loved how Violet was grateful to the Princess for saving her from a huge mistake, and paid her with kindness all those years later. Such a decent thing to do!

      • Karen P. - Wisconsin says:

That is exactly what I thought! Violet and Isobel have grown to be such good companions. I have loved watching that progression.

  86. Gert~Iowa says:

Finally got to watch this final show…you said it all. So many great things happened!!i laughed, I clapped and I cried. Can’t wait for it to return!

  87. Lisa aka Jessies mom says:

So many emotions! First of all, as I read your post, I am re watching the finale, I was so stressed out Sunday that something horrible was going to happen to Robert I couldn’t enjoy it…silly me! I am now relaxed and enjoying the finale once again. So many tears of joy, thrilled that Carson and Mrs. Hughes are an official item, tears of sadness for the loss of Tom, and so touched by his Marigold story to Edith. Glad Edith’s special story is getting out there. I am now looking into the series Upstairs Downstairs…I heard it is a good one, have you seen or heard of it? Stay warm!!

    • sbranch says:

Yes, I think there are newer versions — we saw one way back — which one are you looking at Lisa?

  88. Kathy Wagner says:

I’ll be having major withdrawals between Downton Abbey and The Great British Bake Off coming to their end. I got such enjoyment from both of them. But thank heaven, we still have your blogs to look forward to. Kathy Wagner

  89. Marianne says:

How is your Dad doing, Susan? Hugs to both of you.

    • sbranch says:

He had the last day of his procedure yesterday . . . He sounds great, very positive, happy he doesn’t have to drive an hour and a half this morning! His health should improve over the next few months, he says he already feels better. Thank you for asking Marianne.

      • Carilyn Wolski says:

Great news!!! Prayers answered!!! Keep getting better and better “Susan’s Daddy”!!!

      • Marianne says:

So happy to hear he’s feeling better this soon. I have to giggle every time I come on your blog and see Petey sitting next to what – yes – at quick glance – looks like raw hamburger. I can’t say I noticed that until Jack said something but I think I would have just thought you were cooking up some delicious meal!

      • chris consentino says:

oh, how very wonderful !!!!! your dad is truly a strong fellow…a jolly-good-fellow…and, so say ALL of us!!!! and…my other sentiment…yes, prayers do work!! just listened to our President speak @ Selma….I remember 3-7-65, and will remember 3-7-15….this being the far, far better memory of the two….and, all I can say is….wow!!!! I got more tear-y than last sunday @ downton. take care and keeeeep cozy!!!!xo

  90. Marianne says:

DA … How will we spend Sunday evening without the Crawleys? Loved your post and all the pictures. Loved all the clothes, hats, dancing and dinners. And that dining room in green. Loved that. The final episode did give us wonderful moments of happiness and relationships to look for next year. Wish we didn’t have to wait so long. Love your blog Susan.

  91. Joan says:

First of all, all best get well soon wishes and prayers for “Blog Daddy”. Hope his procedure was a tremendous success and that he’ll start to feel much better soon.

Now is seems that we are not the only ones who enjoy Downton Abbey. Even those who are living in the glittering real-life world of royalty and nobility are attracted to the Downton characters. Here’s a link to an article that recently appeared in the Daily Mail about the first-lady of Mexico who after receiving the full royal treatment on her state visit to the U.K. – from arriving by carriage at Buckingham Palace to a sumptuous state dinner – dashed off the next morning to meet all the Downton actors.

    dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-2979999/Buckingham-Palace-Downton-Abbey-Glamorous-Mexican-Lady-returns-acting-roots-set-visit-elegant-Sophie-Countess-Wessex.html

And next week our Downton friends can expect a visit from Kate, Duchess of Cambridge! I’m confused. In this case does life imitate art or art imitate life? 🙂

  92. Bernie says:

Just dreaming here…..IF “The Gilded Age” does happen, and IF they film some in Newport….I’m all over it. My son just moved there, and since the chances of me getting to Highclere are slim to none, visiting a location shooting here is a lot more plausible. Fingers crossed.

  93. Asha says:

Hi Susan! So happy to hear Blog Daddy is doing well. Prayers are answered. Thank you for the wonderful recap of Downton! I agree with all the girlfriend’s comments for hoping it continues. Would be very sad if next season were the last! On another note, I need to tell you that I made the recipe from your little calendar for March, Lemon Shortbread cookies. My oh my! They are the best! Everyone I shared them with went crazy for them! That recipe is a keeper! Thank you for sharing your recipes with us! You are the best! Love ya!

    • sbranch says:

So happy you liked them Asha! That’s a recipe my girlfriend Rachel gave me when Joe and I were in England.

  94. Joan Lesmeister says:

Just popping in to check on Blog Daddy – I see a comment that he already feels better, that’s so wonderful! Thanks for posting the update! How’s the other patch job coming along – the ceiling? Take care, xo Joanie

    • sbranch says:

The leak came from the bathroom upstairs. Joe just re-tiled, painted it, even the floor! He’ll check to make sure the leak is gone, THEN he will patch up the hole!

      • Joan Lesmeister says:

Wow, he’s amazing! Good thinking on waiting on the ceiling patch……perhaps you should take a nice long, hot, bubbly, wine sipping, romance novel reading baaath for the test! 🙂 !!! xoxo

    • Vicki says:

Joe is a handy guy! I love guys who know how to do stuff. And girls who know how to do stuff. My girlfriend, who got divorced 35 years ago and refused to ever marry again, has learned to fix ANYthing in her house. Me? I struggle to pump my own fuel at the gas station. I shouldn’t admit that. I’m lucky I’ve got a weekend-warrior husband myself. He just built four raised-bed planter boxes for me out of strong wood and high enough so that I don’t hurt my back bending over to tend veggies. So far, we’ve planted bell peppers, lettuces, herbs, cucumbers, tomatoes, chard; beans, spinach and peas…also strawberries…to follow; oh, and melons and squashes. We can do that here in SoCal in March…that is the SoCal which didn’t (again) get enough rain nor snow pack this year (not good for our drought). I’m probably being insensitive talking about this when there are readers here snowed in. The weather on either coast seems crazy.

  95. Rosemary says:

Since I did not watch Downton…the last two episodes..on the proper night, and since my husband and I watched the recorded episodes just yesterday due to being with the Grands in NC…I waited to read your post about it. Very long sentence! Anyhow, I absolutely laughed out loud at your analysis and comments. You are so spot on with your viewpoints…at least I agree with them…and your critique of the wardrobes, etc. that I could say I enjoy reading your post almost as much as watching the show. It is like a bonus! My husband says…Turn it up, please, so I can try to understand what they are saying. So funny…and true. It is almost unbelievable that we have to wait till January to see the next batch of delight. So, a book from you will certainly help to ease the pain. We are not going to Highclere Castle while we are in England due to the fact that we won’t exactly be on our own “whilst” there and actually, I do not even really want to see it. Too much fun in the fantasy world of it all.
Hope you are beginning to be able to think about spring. My daffodils are opening up after a discouraging snow/sleet storm last Thursday here in Texas.
Thanking you ever so much for your Downton report! I love it!!!

    • sbranch says:

I know how you feel about the fantasy . . . it is often better than the reality! Have to be careful! Thank you Rosemary!

  96. Tatiana Sciancalepore says:

When you don’t put up a new post in a while, I read your old ones. And wouldn’t you know it…today is “I love Cursive Day!” You said so yourself in 2012…”So I’m declaring this day, March 10th, “I Love Cursive Day,”

So Happy I Love Cursive Day, Susan! Thank you for your beautiful blog and books!

p.s. my daughter’s school doesn’t teach cursive anymore 🙁 Guess I have my work cut out for me.

  97. I finally watched the final episode. Late as usual, but oh how fabulous it was! I was cheering them all on… It was perfect in every way.

…and Two books? that is even more fabulousness! I think I need to go have a cup of tea and a biscuit.

  98. tracy batchler says:

I love reading your blog…..and love your books and artwork! I went to see Tasha Tudor’s home and saw her speak once in Cincinnati at the Garden Show one year. Your art and the way you live and love life reminds me of her! I collect her books and my collection of yours is right next to my Tahsa books! You are an inspiration and you remind me to take joy in the simple things. You add to the joy of my life! Thank you for being you! Maybe one day I will get to meet you!

  99. Mary from Maine says:

Thank you for this wonderful post Susan! I look forward to your DA commentary almost as much as I look forward to watching the show! Here in our little town in Maine our local theater plays DA episodes. If you missed the show on Sunday you can catch it the following Friday for free at the theater. What a great way to see it (on the big screen) and meet other local DA fans! In your commentaries have you mentioned Isis passing away? I cried when we all lost Robert’s beautiful beloved faithful companion. And she died in bed between Cora and Robert. How sweet is that? Farewell Isis, we all loved you. <3
