Snow Walk, and Garden Giveaway

Today we’re going to mix it up, a snow walk and a garden give-away all in the same post!  MUSICA for slow dancing, Girlfriends. . .

Martha's Vineyard

go outside and play

birds in the snow

Yesterday, for the first time in weeks, maybe even months, we had My House in the Snowa sunshiny, lovely 42º.  We scrambled into our boots and RAN ourselves out the door, for the first walk in all of that time!!!  Our lawn is still covered in snow, but it’s quietly beginning to melt making a continuous little river down our driveway, joining the slightly bigger river on the street, and heading down hill to the harbor.  We weren’t sure what the dirt road that takes us out to the ocean would look like, but we were willing to try, especially when we saw what was going on in the maple tree outside the kitchen window:

Robins!

The photo isn’t clear, but that’s OK, those orange spots are Robins! If this beautiful day is good enough for them, it’s good enough for us!

happy!

birds in the snow

 so here we go

Joe

. . . walking very gingerly . . . It was melting, like a slushy in some parts (the good parts) but there were long lumps of shiny wet ice, and some nice stretches of mud. . . We plot which direction we should fall in case we need to, realizing no one brought a phone, if he breaks his leg, he lays there while I “run” for help. It would be sad.

Joe

The birds were singing, Joe’s trying to figure out where the sound is coming from . . .

Yellow Bird

See him? Way up top in the middle of the picture?  He looks white but he’s a goldfinch, he can’t clap his hands so he shows his happiness with song.

The pond

The goldfinch has a really nice view!  When we walked out of the canopy of the woods, we had our first view of the pond ~ we could see it was still partially frozen . . .

pond

But I have to say, despite how cold it looks, the warm sun on our faces felt as much like spring as breathing into a bouquet of daffodils!  Off came my hat and gloves, unzipped goes the jacket.  THAT’S how nice it was out there!

Are you coming

I’m always behind him . . . he waits, as the ever-patient guy that he is, hands on hips . . .

Fisherman's shack

Can’t just walk right by this little red fisherman’s shack and not stop for a photo . . . crazy man.

a garden

flower border

mud is better

See those broken square-looking things on the ground (talking mostly to the Californians and Floridians right now)?  They are giant ice chips.  When a car goes through a partly frozen puddle, the ice breaks up and scatters. That’s something you don’t see all the time. See how patient Joe is while I take pictures of them?

the sound

We made it to the water, and I have to tell you, it wasn’t easy…. First we had to go through the deep snow in the yard of our friend’s house, then across their deck . . .

rocks

And down that very furthest set of stairs ~ see it back there?  After that, finding a high-ish tide, we had to climb over each rock-piled breakwater, maybe five of them . . . yes, you’re right, I know what you’re thinking, it was heaven out there.  (BTW, while we’re away from home, we had our bedroom windows wide open (for the first time this year); the ceiling fan was on full blast blowing out winter air and exchanging it for fresh spring air, and we knew we were going to sleep like babies after our walk to the sea!)

sea shore book

someone was here first

We discovered that others had been there first.

Eureka

And then, beach booty!  Big piece of dark blue beach glass!

Amazing!

ice chips

More ice chips.  I kind of love them.  Like to break them with my toe. Makes a good noise.  Two nature things happened out there that I didn’t take pictures of: A.) (Pat, you should probably skip this part.)  Because some rather large animal was dead.  I didn’t look because in my accidental half-second glance I could see it was all elbows, knees and feathers and other less identifiable furry parts, and despite my well-known interest in science, this was really not my cup of tea.  Joe looked, he decided it was a coyote AND a turkey, entwined together on the beach. Wow!  We skirt by it, my eyes covered with my hat, and we fall immediately into Morning Science discussion: First off “are there coyotes on the island?”  I didn’t think so. Otherwise I’ve been living in a fool’s paradise thinking we had no kitty-eaters on Martha’s Vineyard.  So, let’s say it was a deer. A deer and a turkey?  girlart“They don’t fight, they don’t eat each other.”  So then here’s what must have happened:  That thing (whatever it is, but it can’t be a coyote) killed the turkey, then, sadly, but deservedly, choked on a bone, fell over and died on top of it. (I just realized, this is kind of like talking about Downton Abbey.)

iced leaves

Anyway, lovely leaves embalmed in ice.  The other nature thing we saw was a pair of birds mating on the road.  That was a first, I have never seen birds do that.  As a scientist, I had never thought about what those little devils did when we left them alone.  We thought they were dead at first, they weren’t moving at all, we didn’t even know there were two of them, till Joe looked closer to figure out which side was up, because this was one weird looking bird.  More Morning Science ensued when all of a sudden, the girl escaped!  OK, I did get a picture of the chase . . .

Inlovewithnature

escape

This is the little father, in hot pursuit! Ah, spring. Quite the adventure!

tire tracks

Tire tracks become puddles . . . Look around, where is the best place to put your foot?  Safest would probably be IN the water.

Yikes

woods

Time to go home . . . so far we have 100% not fallen down!

Joe

And we manage to keep it that way! Usually our walk is 45 minutes, yesterday it was an hour and a half.  That’s from making sure we didn’t break our necks.

Loving the Day

Front row seat to the melting of the snow. (OMG, is he not the most adorable thing in the world?)

hearts and flowers

winter garden

So we all know the snow will go . . .

snowdrops

And waiting for us, under all the ice are our little snow drops (these are from last year, this year’s crop is frozen stiff right now, but soon).  Because, it’s coming, only another week until official . . .

spring

Kitchen gardens

And in honor of the moment, when we are all teetering on the verge of spring, I would love for one of you to enjoy my favorite garden book of all time . . .

flower border

Kitchen Gardens

It’s called Kitchen Gardens, an unassuming little book wonderfully written by Mary Mason Campbell with illustrations by Tasha Tudor.

Kitchen gardens

But it’s by far the most inspiring garden book I’ve ever read.  There are other books with much more detailed information, and definitely glossier pictures, but no book has ever moved me into the garden faster and happier than this one.

flower border

Tasha Tudor illustration

It was published in 1971 and I was lucky enough to happen upon it as my first garden book. “I love how Mary Campbell wrote about the “sunshine, fresh air, and privacy of our gardens. . .”

Kitchen gardens

I thought I would sign this book for you and also add a watercolor bookmark (I’ve been cutting up the bits of paper I use for testing my pen or watercolors and making bookmarks out of them).

If you want to be entered for this giveaway, all you have to do is scroll to the bottom of this post and look for the tiny word “comments” — and leave a comment. Your comment can be just one word if you like; that will be enough to enter you for the drawing. For those of you who get my blog via email, you will have to go to www.162.240.10.175/~susanbs3/susanbranch/ and scroll to the very bottom of this post and find that tiny word . . . “comments” ~ for some reason, they don’t seem to send a “comment” button in an emailed blog.
October 2016Last but not least.  I told you I finished the new calendars for 2016? I thought I would give you a little preview . . . This is “October” for the wall-calendar, and don’t worry, there are pink from me to you with lovepumpkins on the bottom part.  For thee, from me.

Something else for thee: click on “shopping” at the top of the blog, scroll to the bottom of the column on the left, click on FREE STUFF!  Spring-themed stationery, bookmarks, tags — and computer wallpaper!

And just one more thing I wanted to tell you:  My (our, because I’m always thinking of you when I’m writing) new book is being edited even as we speak. That means the writing part is almost done, after that I’ll paint it and add the photos and hopefully we’ll have it in about six months, maybe by the time we make our first fires next autumn.  I know the title.  But I’m afraid to say it out loud yet.  So let me get used to it, maybe next time! You’ll be the first to know!

dreams

Until we meet again . . . Love you, love us.  XOXO

P.S. Don’t forget . . . St. Patrick’s Day is coming!

Tulips, daffadills, snowdrops, signs of Spring! I’m ready!!

  2. Kathy H says:

Thank you for sharing your walk to the beach. I’ll also be so glad to be walking outside again soon. The snow is disappearing, just hope flooding doesn’t come this weekend with the expected east coast rain. Tasha Tudor has been a favorite illustrator of mine for many years and I’ve never seen this gardening book. So nice of you to offer it.

  3. Angie B from Kentucky says:

I love the calendar sneak peek! Thanks for keeping us entertained! Stay warm and happy thoughts for spring to come soon!

  4. Ginny Evans says:

Loved seeing the sweet garden book with artwork by Tasha. When I was a young teen I learned to draw by copying her work. Still love it all today. And these were new to me!!! Precious.

Your blog warms my heart and makes me feel wonderful. Thank you!

  5. Merci says:

I love the ocean! I collect sea shells and sea glass! I would believe you picked up that beautiful piece of blue sea glass. I would love to walk on your beach and pick up tons of shells and sea glass, then I would need to ship it all home in a box. So love your blog, it’s always so inspiring! Thank you for bringing a special piece of happiness into my life!

  6. Ann Y in PA says:

Oh, Susan…doesn’t it feel good to get out there and walk ! And when I open the garage door to leave for school the last few days the birds are singing…hooray. Thanks for the chance to win the darling book. In a “garden” kind of mode – the little boys next door came out in the snowstorm while I was shoveling to ask if I could help them plant in the window box on their new garden shed ( CUTE !!!), and this weekend we are going to a community production of The Secret Garden. Thanks for sharing your walk, your book, your world !

  7. Kathleen Dull says:

I have only recently begun following you (online of course) and to my delight I look so forward to your blogs it’s a bit silly. I am plotting to get into the garden and also loving the Robins Herald of spring. Please enter me for the beautiful book….Kattxxoo

  8. Fran says:

As always, I love your blog and photos. It always makes my day when you post a new blog. The snow and cold looked inviting – it’s unseasonably warm here in Southern California – low 80’s today and more heat on the way! Guess we can all enjoy a snowy winter by reading your wonderful posts! Thanks for the opportunity to win the Garden Book.

  9. sylvia faye says:

I look forward to viewing the cover of your new book and cannot remember if you have given it a name. How many pages did you do this time? To be such a happy person your childhood with your mother and father was blessed as you must have been also a blessing for them.
My youngest daughter intoduced me to Tasha Tudor many years ago and I do think I could have lived her life. How we lack peace and quite these days. Everywhere one goes; even at home; seems filled with noise…airplanes, cars, motorcycles, mowers, machinery, haying, freeway, train, it seems endless. I wish my home was soundproof. We do not watch TV and seldom play the radio as there is no pleasant music there anymore.
Yes, I could have dressed as Tasha did and enjoyed the quite of her life…both of you are so willing to share your artistic talent with us; your girlfriends. I used to be an avid gardener but now in my 80’s I still garden but not anything like in the past. If I should win…it would be one of those sweet spots life lets us have from time to time.
I can remember the ice and cracking it..loved your post where you showed us the giant ice cycles as we had them on our house growing up. Loved to suck on them…no polution in those days.
How great to be able to enjoy walking each day. My dear one and I walk but more each our turns on the property when we find the free time between other jobs calling or beaconing………especially the books on the library shelfs.
Bless you for this delightful giveaway. I would love a bookmark. I have your large calendar right next to me and love the stack of books on the March page.
    With a delightful heart,
    Sylvia Faye

  10. Ann Keehner says:

    Love you and Tasha Tudor!

  11. Dawn Brock Belford says:

I love your blog! Thanks for sharing a part of you with me. Just curious did you ever get to meet Tasha Tudor?

    • sbranch says:

I didn’t. I really didn’t know much about her until later . . . after I had written a couple of books, my publisher published a book about Tasha, so I’m late to her, but my admiration runs deep.

  12. Emily merrill says:

Oh a garden book how fun! It’s a new one too me I may buy it if I don’t win it!

  13. Christy R. says:

I always look forward to reading your blog and I think Jack is amazing. I would love to win that book, I always look for one at garage sales and used book stores but haven’t found one yet. I suppose I could search on e-bay but that would take some of the fun out of the hunt. Until next time, think Spring = ^..^ =

  14. Bev Wiedeman says:

“The Road to a Friend’s House is never long…” And the path to a garden even shorter. Love your pictures and inviting us to your adventures!
    Love, Bev

  15. Nancy Anderson says:

I have admired and enjoyed Tasha Tudor’s art work for years. The little garden book would find a happy home with me. Your artwork is admirable and enjoyable, too. I really enjoy your blog.

  16. gurian6 says:

Spring IS coming! I love to get your emails so I can grab a cup of tea and relax…

  17. LindaB says:

Just when I didn’t think I could stand one more frigid day, spring arrived!! It’s been in the 50’s all week and the snow is melting!!! (Never mind the muddy mess, it’s so worth it) So glad spring has sprung for you too!!

  18. Heather says:

Thank you for taking us with you on that lovely walk! Here’s to spring!

  19. Betsy D. says:

    Hi Susan,

My first time commenting here. I have several of your books and other items and have enjoyed your artwork and writing for many years. I just started reading this blog regularly last summer after my sister sent me A Fine Romance for my bday. LOVE the book! LOVE English cottages and gardens, etc.

I haven’t seen this Betty Crocker cook book before. Tasha Tudor is a favorite of mine too. Thank you for offering it! I have Secret Garden that she illustrated, Around the Year and several others.

The Oct ’16 calendar pic is grand! My kitties are also black and white domestic shorthairs. Sophie Anne and Henry Ely are 3-yr-old sister and brother. I adopted them when they were 10 wks old.

A couple of high 40s/low 50s spring-like days here in upstate New York Tue and Wed, but we’ll be back to frigid cold for the next week. At least the thick ice in the driveway is finally melted and we do have lots of sunshine even if it isn’t warm.

Thanks for sharing the pics of your walk!

  20. Carolyn says:

I love your blog. And right now I am reading “A Fine Romance”. It is so charming and wonderful!

  21. bobbie Calgaro says:

Always loved to crack the ice shelves that formed on the sidewalk as a child to and from school. Sadly as an adult living in NC not too many chances to do that now. But spring is fast arriving here now so there are compensations! Enjoy the thaw!

  22. Beth K. says:

We have a crab apple tree that flocks of robins come to feast on in the middle of our Indiana winters! I’m glad you were careful on your walk! Loved hearing about but not seeing some of the things on your interesting walk! I would love that book! We love flower gardening and I’m in love with Tasha Tudor! I enjoy your blog and work so much because we are kindred spirits. Love you, Susan!

  23. Carol in NorCal says:

Love love LOVE your blog, would love to win the book too! Tasha Tudor is a great illustrator, just like you. PS–I really like your choice of putting the kitties on your October calendar page! Will look forward to that next year.

  24. Marilyn the nurse says:

Would love the book. Beautiful pictures today, Mother Nature at her best!!!!

  25. Jann says:

    Spring. Yes!

  26. Leigh Ulicny says:

Love your blog! Looking forward to my garden coming to life again soon. I always love when my hostas poke through the soil and let me know the warm weather is on its way!

  27. Love Tasha Tudor. The book looks wonderful.
Thanks for the walk this morning. The sea glass is beautiful!
Have you ever made a Day-by-Day calendar? I’m sure it would be a lot of work. I have your large one on my pantry door.
We are to be 65* tomorrow. The snow is pretty much all gone here. I think most of it went your way this year! But,,, we haven’t seen a robin yet. I keep watching.

  28. Heidi says:

The description of your walk brought tears to my eyes. I live in CT and we are so desperate for spring as you are. But, maybe this snow and reallllly cold weather was given to us so that we appreciate spring and summer so much more. I am a teacher and although I love a good snowfall and snowday, this was too much!!!!! It was so good to see the bits of brown grass when the snow melted and the stone wall!!! I’ve missed you stone wall!

  29. Chris H says:

    Hi Susan,
For some reason sea glass is very rare here in Australia at least in the areas and beaches I’ve lived near……..maybe we love plastic too much! I’ve found a few pieces over the years but most of the bits I have came from one little beach on the South Coast of England that we visited nearly two years ago now.
Thankyou so much for the talk through your walk :). I can only imagine what it’s like to live in a place where it snows and your descriptions always bring your life and region to life for us all.
That little gardening book looks so enchanting and as I’m also a huge fan of Tasha Tudor’s illustrations and work, to win it would be such a joy! ……just have to ignore the months of the year written about and work on seasons here in the Southern Hemisphere.
On behalf of all the girlfriends thankyou for your generosity in offering so many giveaways. Blessings as always, Chris

    • sbranch says:

Thank you Chris . . . we live, as you know, on an island ~ it’s only seven miles off the coast of the mainland by ferry (only three miles as the crow flies) — lots of sailing goes on around here, lots of boats — I think you have a bigger deeper ocean down there, and less chance of bottles! Thank you dear, xoxo

  30. Emma Cook says:

Awww the book was written in 1971…the year I was married! Sweet husband died 3 yrs. ago. I’m glad you put Jack in the 2016 calendar. He seems like such a joy!

  31. Terri G. says:

Books like yours and the Mary Mason Campbell/Tasha Tudor book are
    so inspirational. Thank you.
    Happy spring!

  32. Tina Oldham says:

I always love everything you give away, but oh, to win this one would be special. I love Tasha Tudor and have many of her books. Not this one though. Fingers crossed.

  33. Debby says:

What a lovely garden book! And the anticipation for your new book makes waiting very exciting!

  34. PeggyAnn Smith says:

I know I have a very Fat Chance of not getting this Wonderful Give Away…
as I never win anything…but I must Try (again, and again and again) because
I would so love to win this Charming Book. Tasha Tudor is one of my all time
favorite Illustrators and second only to Susan herself. I adore them both!!!

So…here goes Wishing Upon A Star!!!
    Smitten by all thing Beautiful,
    PeggyAnn Smith

  35. I love seeing your snow. Although we did not get any in the Pacific Northwest, a couple of hard freeze nights a while ago made mush out of the flower buds of my paperwhites, so I only have greenery. BUT the tulips survived fine and one bloomed all pretty and pink yesterday. Just waiting for the rest and also for a visit to the fields in Skagit Valley up north. Of course, I would love to win Kitchen Gardens, who wouldn’t. Thanks for the chance in your giveaway!

  36. Linda says:

Thank you for taking us on a walk with you! Believe it or not it is very “springy” here in Idaho! We had a very mild winter. A neighbor is out walking her dogs with capris on at the moment! I haven’t brought my warm weather clothes out yet. I do have crocus blooming and birds flitting about. A woodpecker drilled our roof vent this morning trying to attract a mate, I think! I ran out to shoo him away!
Your garden book looks lovely! I have doing some container gardening and had quite the harvest last year so I’m excited to plant again!
    Wishing you a beautiful spring!

  37. Debbie from White Bear Lake says:

You’re so lucky! I never find beach glass.

  38. Gina P. from NY says:

    Susan:

So nice of you to take us along on your walk! Imagine, 42 degrees, and we think it’s warm – taking off scarves, opening coats… After all those 5, 10 degree days we had up until a week ago, this is heaven, right? I’ve been kicking off the covers at night too! I truly hope we will have a Spring, and not go from cold to hot right away! I am not a fan of HOT and humid – so to have some lovely days in the 60’s would be wonderful for awhile. I also have been opening the windows and doors to get some fresh air in – so refreshing!

I love that garden book! The illustrations by Tasha Tudor are so beautiful – you just want to jump into the picture. I’m keeping my fingers crossed!

Happy trails Susan! (but be careful)… : )

  39. Mollie Corcoran says:

Tasha Tudor is my favorite illustrator. I would be thrilled to win the Garden Book with Tasha Tudor’s illustrations.

  40. Debbie says:

A giveaway that is part Susan Branch and part Tasha Tudor. What could be more perfect? I am wishing for Spring and reading your post today was a reminder that it will return. I am holding on to the promise of those snowdrops!

  41. Marian from Orange, CA says:

I enjoyed your walk, almost felt as though I was there. Loved seeing the broken ice, the remaining snow, and the leaves in the snow. I know you’re good and ready for spring, but it was 90 degrees this afternoon here in Orange County, CA, and it’s just too soon for summer!

  42. Ellen Johnson says:

    Hi Susan,
    Love you.
    Happy spring!
    Happy snow drops!
    and happy give away.

  43. Sandra Graham says:

Loved going along on the walk with you through pictures. It is 85 degrees here today in Orange County, California but I appreciate seeing all the snow and ice and what it looks like as Spring approaches! Enjoy your blog so much.

  44. Heather says:

That’s so cool, I love it…Thanks for the entry:)

On a trip to Maine a few years ago while discovering some old gardens my husband and I came across a book called The Golden Circle by Hal Borland (1977). A nature book of months. It is a beautiful read.

Thank you for your sparkly attitude that spreads it’s light far and wide. My day is lighter and brighter when your post arrives.
    Keep shining!

  53. CarolK says:

Sea Glass!!! I just finished perusing our Maine brochure and I was drooling over the Cross Jewelry sea glass bracelet. One of these days its going to be mine! Enjoyed your winter walk because I’m too chicken to walk in the snow just yet. Don’t want to fall and damage my new knees. And….you don’t have to mention books to me twice……….here’s my entry.
P.S. Have a great weekend and Happy St. Patty’s Day to you & Joe. I’m making corned beef and cabbage, boiled red potatoes, carrot coins AND Irish soda bread.

  54. Ruth from Pennsylvania says:

Yay! The robins are flying around, checking out every blade of grass in the yard. Finally, grass is visible. And the car got a much needed sudsing today out on the driveway, amidst warm, glorious sunshine. Can you tell I’ve been cooped up inside for too long? Happy spring, right around the corner.

Omg, snow, ice, beach glass, birds, and spring flowers getting ready to bloom. That was some morning walk! Looking forward to the new book. Thank you for the great blog. It should be called Martha’s “Heavenly” Vineyard.

  75. Kelli L says:

I’m looking forward to spring!! Would love the garden book. I’ve already began planning my veggie garden.

  76. Gill K says:

Thank you for a lovely post – it was good to smell the ocean by proxy. The garden book looks wonderful – thank you for the opportunity to win a copy, not forgetting your bookmark.

  77. Diane Thompson says:

Thanks for all your lovely posts Susan. Can’t wait for your new book to come out. You’re give away is something I’d love!

Spring is a glorious time of year!
Thanks for the pictures of your walk, complete with ice chips…

  79. Donna says:

Your walk in the spring snow and ice reminds me of growing up in rural Manitoba stepping into puddles and crunching the fragile ice. We just had to make sure the puddles weren’t knee-deep !!

  80. Anita Bryant says:

    Spring Spring SPRING!!!!!

  81. Barbara K. says:

I love that little Martha’s Vineyard cup with the pear. It’s sweet…so are you and Joe:)

  82. Donna W says:

Darling looking book–I tried to find it when you showed it before (guess it’s out of print). It would be a fun read and help my garden planning during breaks in jury duty. We’ve got temperatures in the 70’s here in the Central Valley (CA) and everything is blooming.

Cats & Gardens and all they entail!

  84. Carol Ney says:

I do believe my granddaughter, Ellie is your youngest “fan” since we have been looking at your blog for over a year and a half. She loves two things: the bird that tweets across the top of your blog and Jack! She is 3 years old and absolutely loves to see him chase rubber bands or just lay around and look “booful”. It is a very sweet time of the day for us when one of your “letters” comes and I call her to come and see the “tweet-tweet” as she first called them because of the sound of the bird and now we look at all the animals in your yard, the kitties (esp. Jack) and the wonderful cakes and cookies and so on and then talk about what she would like to do. She has been telling all of us that she wants “to paint”. It is a very lovely thought indeed.

  85. Karen says:

I love your October 2016 Calendar page of kitty love! Plus pink is my favorite color but I have never seen pink pumpkins. Happy Spring.

    • sbranch says:

They were a special request from some of our Blog Girlfriends because October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month . . . despite the pinkness of the pumpkins, I think they came out pretty good!

  86. Linda Neal says:

I am a retired elementary school librarian.
We had many books illustrated by this artist. I just love her work! Know why you love her, too!

  87. Moonlit Lake says:

Love all your photos, especially the gray cottage with the red door (behind Joe), the cobalt beach glass, and Jack, with the “about time you returned” expression on his face. Thanks for another lovely post!

  88. Christabelle says:

OH, comment, comment, comment!!!! Love all things Tasha Tudor! (Have 2 of her Christmas books – can you believe those treasures were found as library discards???)

  89. Susan says:

    Heaven 🙂

  90. Kate says:

I am so happy to discover your art ant you blog. Wish I could send you a handful of the daffodils blooming out here in Oregon. <3

  91. Nancy G says:

Tasha Tudor is one of my favorites, right up there with you, Susan. I would love to win this book. Tasha and gardens, you can’t get any better than that, except maybe your books and blog! SPRING IS COMING!!

  92. Jana says:

I, too, like many of your readers have books by Tasha Tudor and a couple of signed prints (Valentine card and a Christmas scene … so sweet!). I just finished re-reading A Fine Romance (and yes, it was better the second time around, just like L-O-V-E!). I gushed over that photo of Jack. Surely that’s one of your best to date. What a handsome, talented boy. Here in the Peach State spring is springing! A few trees have leaf buds peeping out, daffies have been up at least a week, crocus and hyacinths are in bloom. The birds are singing their wee heads off and the robins are flocking about (that may not be correct but it is what they’re doing). Still using heat indoors, but a few days have been able to fling the windows open! It’s a good week and a good life. Love you and your work in the world, so much, dear Susan.

  93. Paulette Watton says:

Love your blog, pictures and your Musika choices. My favorite picture of Tasha Tudor is of her walking barefoot in her garden with her Corgis. Waiting for spring!

  94. Milanya says:

So many things to love about your post. And I thought ice chips were just for when you are ill! I commented yesterday but I can’t find my comment anywhere within the 1000+ comments, and I don’t want to lose a chance to be in the drawing so I’ll try again. Did you ever hear from your friend in England for whom you drew the charming birthday picture?

    • sbranch says:

I still have 335 comments to read and “approve” — so don’t worry, anyone who isn’t seeing themselves here, it’s just me!

  95. Cheryl Walsh says:

Glad spring is finally trying to come your way! You guys have really had a tough winter- but nothing keeps your sweet spirit down for long!
Love the book- hope to win-we’ll see…. :o)

  96. Sherrie says:

Susan, I just love it when you take us on your walks! I love seeing the beach in different kinds of weather, and the white snow and blue sky and red robins breasts are beautiful! Thanks so much.

    • sbranch says:

Wait till we go to Scotland “together” — I’ll take you on some really good walks then!

  97. Sue G says:

Ahh it has been a long winter and for much of it I was homebound recovering from neck/back surgery and today was my first day back at school. Here in WI we have a warm week in the 40’s and yesterday and today the 50’s with talk of the 60’s tomorrow. I am glad you braved the elements to venture out and of course that you took us along with you. What an interesting post loved how you wove your story and the great pictures and commentary.

The Kitchen Garden book is so sweet. Love the illustrations from Tasha Tudor. Looking forward to spring coming through too in my yard, one of my students brought me a bunch of tulips today and it has made me even more eager to see new growth. Thanks so much for sharing yourself with all of us.

  98. Eliza Waters says:
