Today we’re going to mix it up, a snow walk and a garden give-away all in the same post! MUSICA for slow dancing, Girlfriends. . .
Yesterday, for the first time in weeks, maybe even months, we had a sunshiny, lovely 42º. We scrambled into our boots and RAN ourselves out the door, for the first walk in all of that time!!! Our lawn is still covered in snow, but it’s quietly beginning to melt making a continuous little river down our driveway, joining the slightly bigger river on the street, and heading down hill to the harbor. We weren’t sure what the dirt road that takes us out to the ocean would look like, but we were willing to try, especially when we saw what was going on in the maple tree outside the kitchen window:
The photo isn’t clear, but that’s OK, those orange spots are Robins! If this beautiful day is good enough for them, it’s good enough for us!
so here we go
. . . walking very gingerly . . . It was melting, like a slushy in some parts (the good parts) but there were long lumps of shiny wet ice, and some nice stretches of mud. . . We plot which direction we should fall in case we need to, realizing no one brought a phone, if he breaks his leg, he lays there while I “run” for help. It would be sad.
The birds were singing, Joe’s trying to figure out where the sound is coming from . . .
See him? Way up top in the middle of the picture? He looks white but he’s a goldfinch, he can’t clap his hands so he shows his happiness with song.
The goldfinch has a really nice view! When we walked out of the canopy of the woods, we had our first view of the pond ~ we could see it was still partially frozen . . .
But I have to say, despite how cold it looks, the warm sun on our faces felt as much like spring as breathing into a bouquet of daffodils! Off came my hat and gloves, unzipped goes the jacket. THAT’S how nice it was out there!
I’m always behind him . . . he waits, as the ever-patient guy that he is, hands on hips . . .
Can’t just walk right by this little red fisherman’s shack and not stop for a photo . . . crazy man.
See those broken square-looking things on the ground (talking mostly to the Californians and Floridians right now)? They are giant ice chips. When a car goes through a partly frozen puddle, the ice breaks up and scatters. That’s something you don’t see all the time. See how patient Joe is while I take pictures of them?
We made it to the water, and I have to tell you, it wasn’t easy…. First we had to go through the deep snow in the yard of our friend’s house, then across their deck . . .
And down that very furthest set of stairs ~ see it back there? After that, finding a high-ish tide, we had to climb over each rock-piled breakwater, maybe five of them . . . yes, you’re right, I know what you’re thinking, it was heaven out there. (BTW, while we’re away from home, we had our bedroom windows wide open (for the first time this year); the ceiling fan was on full blast blowing out winter air and exchanging it for fresh spring air, and we knew we were going to sleep like babies after our walk to the sea!)
We discovered that others had been there first.
And then, beach booty! Big piece of dark blue beach glass!
More ice chips. I kind of love them. Like to break them with my toe. Makes a good noise. Two nature things happened out there that I didn’t take pictures of: A.) (Pat, you should probably skip this part.) Because some rather large animal was dead. I didn’t look because in my accidental half-second glance I could see it was all elbows, knees and feathers and other less identifiable furry parts, and despite my well-known interest in science, this was really not my cup of tea. Joe looked, he decided it was a coyote AND a turkey, entwined together on the beach. Wow! We skirt by it, my eyes covered with my hat, and we fall immediately into Morning Science discussion: First off “are there coyotes on the island?” I didn’t think so. Otherwise I’ve been living in a fool’s paradise thinking we had no kitty-eaters on Martha’s Vineyard. So, let’s say it was a deer. A deer and a turkey? “They don’t fight, they don’t eat each other.” So then here’s what must have happened: That thing (whatever it is, but it can’t be a coyote) killed the turkey, then, sadly, but deservedly, choked on a bone, fell over and died on top of it. (I just realized, this is kind of like talking about Downton Abbey.)
Anyway, lovely leaves embalmed in ice. The other nature thing we saw was a pair of birds mating on the road. That was a first, I have never seen birds do that. As a scientist, I had never thought about what those little devils did when we left them alone. We thought they were dead at first, they weren’t moving at all, we didn’t even know there were two of them, till Joe looked closer to figure out which side was up, because this was one weird looking bird. More Morning Science ensued when all of a sudden, the girl escaped! OK, I did get a picture of the chase . . .
This is the little father, in hot pursuit! Ah, spring. Quite the adventure!
Tire tracks become puddles . . . Look around, where is the best place to put your foot? Safest would probably be IN the water.
Time to go home . . . so far we have 100% not fallen down!
And we manage to keep it that way! Usually our walk is 45 minutes, yesterday it was an hour and a half. That’s from making sure we didn’t break our necks.
Front row seat to the melting of the snow. (OMG, is he not the most adorable thing in the world?)
So we all know the snow will go . . .
And waiting for us, under all the ice are our little snow drops (these are from last year, this year’s crop is frozen stiff right now, but soon). Because, it’s coming, only another week until official . . .
And in honor of the moment, when we are all teetering on the verge of spring, I would love for one of you to enjoy my favorite garden book of all time . . .
It’s called Kitchen Gardens, an unassuming little book wonderfully written by Mary Mason Campbell with illustrations by Tasha Tudor.
But it’s by far the most inspiring garden book I’ve ever read. There are other books with much more detailed information, and definitely glossier pictures, but no book has ever moved me into the garden faster and happier than this one.
It was published in 1971 and I was lucky enough to happen upon it as my first garden book. “I love how Mary Campbell wrote about the “sunshine, fresh air, and privacy of our gardens. . .”
I thought I would sign this book for you and also add a watercolor bookmark (I’ve been cutting up the bits of paper I use for testing my pen or watercolors and making bookmarks out of them).
If you want to be entered for this giveaway, all you have to do is scroll to the bottom of this post and look for the tiny word “comments” — and leave a comment. Your comment can be just one word if you like; that will be enough to enter you for the drawing. For those of you who get my blog via email, you will have to go to www.162.240.10.175/~susanbs3/susanbranch/ and scroll to the very bottom of this post and find that tiny word . . . “comments” ~ for some reason, they don’t seem to send a “comment” button in an emailed blog.
Last but not least. I told you I finished the new calendars for 2016? I thought I would give you a little preview . . . This is “October” for the wall-calendar, and don’t worry, there are pink pumpkins on the bottom part.♥ For thee, from me. ♥
Something else for thee: click on “shopping” at the top of the blog, scroll to the bottom of the column on the left, click on FREE STUFF! Spring-themed stationery, bookmarks, tags — and computer wallpaper!
And just one more thing I wanted to tell you: My (our, because I’m always thinking of you when I’m writing) new book is being edited even as we speak. That means the writing part is almost done, after that I’ll paint it and add the photos and hopefully we’ll have it in about six months, maybe by the time we make our first fires next autumn. I know the title. But I’m afraid to say it out loud yet. So let me get used to it, maybe next time! You’ll be the first to know!
Until we meet again . . . Love you, love us.♥ XOXO
P.S. Don’t forget . . . St. Patrick’s Day is coming!
Yes, your Jack is one adorable kitty. Would love to win the garden book!
I would love to win the book……and the BOOKMARK (of which I have quite a collection)! However, if I don’t I will be happy for the girlfriend who does…….the musica – Brenda Lee, singing “Will you still love me tomorrow”…… awesome, I loved her when I was a young teen, love the song……….the walk was fantastic, because I know I would not have done it (yet)……you capture everything so perfectly. Again, dear, dear Susan Branch, you have made my day by sending this blog my way and for that I have to say…..thank you! thank you! thank you! xoxo Love Jack, Girl Kitty and Joe too….they are all so a part of your specialness!
Spring is definitely here in Calgary, at least for this week. We have no snow and it was 16 C (61 F) this afternoon with the same weather expected for the next three days! I sat out in the sun reading a book for a couple of hours. It was heaven! Of course, the dinner menu is barbeque. The book in your giveaway looks lovely. Thanks for the chance to win it.
Hi Susan, love your blogs and you art work. So glad you are emerging into spring, it looks like you have had quite a winter!!!!
Love Jack’s new portrait!!
Oh my goodness, Susan, I know you enjoyed your lovely walk to the sea! This winter has not wanted to leave, but leave it will! I’m so excited for Spring! Before we know it, we will all be getting our hands dirty—I can’t wait.
I’m so looking forward to your new book. How exciting! And the calendar for 2016 looks adorable as always. Girl and Jack look so cute on the October page!
Hope all is well with Blog Daddy and he’s back to his ole self. Take care, sweet Susan. xoxo ♥
Dear Susan….my husband and I took our first walk yesterday, too! Surely not as much fun as yours, but it was so very good to get outside and just BREATHE! I’m taking physical therapy designed just for cancer patients, and my therapist’s name is Susan! She is the best therapist in God’s world! She has given us a routine that works, and is slowly but surely helping me regain my strength and endurance!
I have several Tasha Tudor books….just love her gentle art! Always wishing I could have just a tad of that talent! Her books sit on a shelf near your books, along with “In a Country Garden”, ” The Country Diary of an Edwardian Lady”, “The Brambly Hedge”, ” The Buttery Shelf Almanac”. There is a theme here, of gentle art that soothes my spirit. You do the same for me! Thank you for perking me up!
Good to hear that Mary Pat! That walk and air has to be wonderfully healthy for you too. xoxo
Love Jacks new portrait!!
One of my favorites too. Thanks for reminding me to enjoy it.
I’d love the book to share with my mum who is 94 . She was a great cook and baker all her life. We live in Ireland so happy St Patrick’s day to you and all you love.
Thank you and Hello to your mum, from all of us!
Love jacks new portrait
Want spring….my favorite season
You’re too kind, Susan! Love your trip to the sea – someday I hope to do the same. 🙂
Lovely giveaway Susan, thank you.
I love seeing all of your snow photos. We don’t get snow – ever – so I always look forward to seeing those photos… as well as your kitty. (I really miss having a cat about my feet). I love the illustration Tasha Tudor did of her cottage. It makes me want to recreate it in miniature! (I recently started making little fairy houses for fun). That book looks fantastic, so it looks like I’ve just added yet ANOTHER book to my growing list. (It’s 4 or 5 typed pages long already. I guess it’s good I don’t live anywhere near a book store).
My husband just created 3 long, long, long raised veggie beds. We’ve been filling them with rich garden soil and homemade compost just today as the weather is in the 70’s and the birds are outdoing themselves in song as I sit outdoors a 6:00p.m. and type this. The weather has been PERFECT in the Midwest and we are not complaining. Love days like this! And your book give-away, I almost ordered it last week; now I know why I didn’t! HA! Please draw my name. Thank you for such lovely posts.
Love Tasha! Would love to win! Love you, Susan Branch!!!! Oxox
Hello Susan, I’m at work reading this and I felt like I was with you on your walk! Love reading your blog! I get a warm and happy feeling reading it..thank you!
With love,
Roseanne
My gardens have always been a walk from the house, but this year I will truly have a “kitchen garden”, just a few steps from the back door!!!!!
I almost thought you were talking to me when you told Pat not to look at the picture of the goner duo as it would break my heart also.
I read somewhere that you used to live in Reseda, Ca. I was wondering if my dad (they called him Spanky for some reason and he was always whistling) ever delivered your mail that you could remember. I lived in Reseda from 1955-2008 then moved back to Decorah, Iowa. You and Joe should come visit sometime as we have a beautiful little town and a great indie bookstore named Dragonfly Books. Anyway, here’s hoping that I win The Garden Book” but I’ve never been real lucky at winning prizes but then there is always a first time.
PS I love all things “Susan Branch”.
They must have all had nick names! Our mailman was “Breezy.” You also have a pair of eagles living in a nest there in Decorah, which I’ve had my eye on at times (via the computer) . . . I’ve heard of Dragonfly! We should try for that next time.
Thank you for the inspiration! I’m definitely ready for spring after a long, cold winter!
I love books!
SPRING It is coming!
After the first real “springlike” day in Central Massachusetts, our power went out! Still out after about an hour. Must save my phone battery for the duration.
OK, here I go! I feel like gushing! Robins, snowdrops, tasha tudor, seashells, the beach, that bright red door in the post, Jack, calender page cuteness, and last but not least new book excitement…Shew I can t take , much more joy! I love how you two love life cause I love life in the same ways! Inspired. Love.
Susan,
I am waiting so hard to see my first Robin of the season. I would have jumped for joy if I saw those Robins outside my kitchen window!! We are also having wonderful weather here in Chicago..
Louise
My mind and heart are in gardening mode already, and this would be a perfect go-with!
What a beautiful book-just the thing to “inspire” us to the garden!
Loved this blog, in fact I can’t wait for spring and all the flowers and green grass.
the walk looks great! And yes, your cat looks adorable! Can’t wait to see the whole calendar and the new book!
Oh thank you Susan! I feel as though your walk has taken us out of the winter doldrums and on to the path toward Spring!
Love my 2014 calendar!
How Wonderful that you were able to finally take your walk to the water! Thank-you for taking your camera and sharing it with us! (And for Joe’s patience!) So Cute seeing Jack sitting on the chair so he could look outside! The garden book looks like such a treasure! I Love Tasha Tuder’s artwork! I have already started broccoli seeds to plant outside in a couple weeks and plant to start tomato seeds soon, as well. I could have waited and bought seedlings, but I couldn’t help myself! I had to start gardening somehow! LOL! So, of course, I would Love to win the drawing! Keeping my fingers crossed! Sooooo Excited about your new book! So maybe by September?? Oh boy, oh boy!!
Hi Susan
Well that was a fun walk and so pretty. Ahhhh that book looks wonderful!!!! I just love Tasha Tudor. I have one of her cookbooks and adore everything about her. Hope I win.
Happy day Susan
deezie
Oh, my. Such a PLEASURE to read about your outdoor adventures. I’m so happy for you both. Nothing, absolutely nothing, like fresh air and sunshine to shoo away the cobwebs. Please enter me in the garden drawing; we’re preparing to do a new garden this spring at our cabin and can’t wait for your inspiring blogs to cheer us on!
Oh please pick me! I adore Tasha and gardening!
Susan, so glad you and Joe could finally go for your walk – and so very glad you made it safely:) Spring is coming!
Dreaming!
My husband and I also got out for the first time in weeks for some walks (much snow and ice in Ohio as well). It did so much for our spirits to see the melting snow and ice and hear those lovely birds singing!
Your blog, Susan, is always a cheery reminder to enjoy life to the fullest! Thank you!
Hi Barb! I’m glad your snow is finally melting there; my mother still lives in Ohio and keeps me in touch with what’s going on with the weather. I remember what it was like to finally be able to get out and take a walk without being afraid of falling on ice or into the snow!
I love old books and Tasha Tudor’s artwork.
Hey Susan….haven’t commented in quite a while but I am still here, loving everyone of your postings and hanging on to every single word and picture! I was so afraid for you and Joe, going for the icy walk!! Glad it went OK. I know it must have felt so good to get out there once again 🙂 Looking forward to the give away…keeping my fingers crossed.
So nice to catch up with you as you enjoy the first vestiges of spring! I will surely give this nice book a wonderful home if I’m the chosen one.
Hi Susan,
As a retired Kindergarten teacher, Tasha Tudor is a name that I know well and adore. This wonderful gal represent everything beautiful and natural in this world. I was not aware that she had illustrated Kitchen Gardens but I know it must be a dream of a book. I am now Nana of two granddaughters who know Tasha’s books and love to garden along with me. We spend many Summer days enjoying the flowers in the gardens and this year I am giving each one of the girls their own waist high raised bed to plant whatever makes their heart happy. This book would be a lovely one to share with them.
I enjoy your website and blog and have many friends who now also enjoy your peek in on your seaside world. Keep up the great work-you make more people happy each day than you will ever know.
Wishing you a break from your snow and the Spring we have all been waiting to see.
Until Later,
Pearl Gies
My love for Tasha Tudor cannot be measured. I once knitted a Tasha Tudor shawl. Would love the garden book.
Keeping my fingers crossed that I win the book.
Thank you for so graciously sharing with us again. I love the idea of your paintings as recycled bookmarks! Happy Spring!
I really enjoy your blog. Most of my snow is all gone so it was amazing to see yours.
Have been eagerly (impatiently?) waiting for a new post and feel so thrilled that the wait delivered such a charming glimpse into your days. Thanks for bringing spring into all of our windows this afternoon!
Would love to be included in the book giveaway … going to visit Tasha Tudor’s House is one of my New Year’s Resolutions … and now, I’m even more resolute.
Thanks so much for brightening this on-the-verge-of-spring day! The snow is melting, the sky is blue, and all’s right with the world!
Isn’t it a Glorious Gift to BREATHE in deeply the cool, fresh air of early Spring! Deep and restorative breathing….ahhhhh!…exchanged for winter’s choppy, short, dry heated breaths. And what lovely scenery as you saunter!!
BTW, is that a FISH ??? nailed to a tree as Joe walks gingerly along the path?
And that precious red-doored cottage looks like your first ever home on MV??
LOVE the invitation to stroll along ***carefully*** with you and take it all in…
…gotta watch those bones! yikes! Thanks for including us!!! xoxo
Yes, the signs on the road identifying each house, they are quite creative! The red door belongs to friends Kitty and Ken. Darling house with a lovely little garden.
It is finally in the 50’s here in central Ohio and it is so nice. Time to start my spring cleaning. I have never had a garden so I might just try to plant something this year. Also Jack is just adorable!
Watch out, it’s addictive!
Hope springs eternal! Hoping for spring and to win your charming book!
A sun-shiney spring day AND a give away!!! Oh joy! One lucky person that is already dreaming of getting that garden ready soon will be able to do it with this lovely book!
I am a devoted fan of your website and especially enjoy sharing it with my grand-daughter, to inspire her love of painting and creating. Your work is truly multi-generational and brings joy to us all. We’re so lucky that you’re able to share your many talents, which enrich our lives and brighten up our homes!
Thank you Jan, truly, I’m humbled and grateful for every moment. xoxo
Love this blog post!! Looks like a wonderful book, you have the best recommendations!
I love Tasha Tudor so much! That book is beautiful. 🙂
Thank you, Susan, for sharing your life with us! The book in the giveaway looks so charming, especially with Tasha Tudor illustrations; good luck to me
Cannot wait for your new book! “A Fine Romance” is one of my all-time favorites. I’ve been blessed to go to England several times and sometimes feel “homesick” for it…your book helps a lot.
Also a beachcomber, before I read your words when I saw the blue on the sand I cried out ‘ah! blue beach glass—sweet!’ then read your caption “beach booty” and was very happy for you! Love those gifts from the sea!
I always love your walks! Spring is slowly coming to Michigan and a gardening book would be a delightful surprise!
Was just thinking today that I had not read of one of yours and Joe’s walk-abouts! Thank you for a beautiful one!!!
I love strolling along with you and Joe on your island walks! So glad that spring will be here soon, but I haven’t seen a robin yet – they all must be on Martha’s Vineyard 🙂
I wouldn’t doubt it!
Tasha Tudor? Hurray!
snow, sunshine and that brilliant blue sea glass…i can smell that wonderful martha air just reading your blog….what a wonderful gift you are Susan…and i agree about that book,,,i have it on my kitchen book case..how wonderful to have you and tasha tudor keeping me company when i cook!! thank you !!!!!
How nice the weather is finely warming up. Wish there was some way to send all that water to Calif!!
We could sure use it!
I may have already commented that when I complained to my daughter about the snow and melting snow and freezing mud and more snow, etc. She said in New England they call that “March”.
Cannot wait for that calendar page to appear! I love cats and books! Speaking of calendars, this year’s March calendar page is gorgeous. It makes me smile each time I pass it. Even with the melting snow and mud outside here in the Midwest.
Love, love, love your blog!!!
Already in the thick of garden planning, it was 54 and sunny here today :o).
Can’t wait til “mud season” is in full swing. looked like a lovely walk.
We just bought our first house and are hoping to start a kitchen garden this year! That book would really inspire me. Also, are snow is melting here too and thank goodness! I am ready for spring and those flower buds to pop up!
Last week we had 6 inches of snow & the temp. was 12. This week it is 60 and all the snow has gone & the green daffodil blades are 6 inches tall. Spring usually comes more gradually here in VA, but I am so happy to see it arrive! Thanks for sharing your winter walk pictures.
Love the pictures from your walk…felt like I was right there behind you…waiting to cushion your fall! Glad it didn’t happen! Oh and I love the kitty…so sweet.
Love Tasha Tudor !
love your blog, books, Tasha Tudor, and gardening (especially after this winter)
Our roads are beginning to widen, so soon there may be room for both an auto and a pedestrian. The banks of snow are still too high to allow a peak into the woods on either side, but there is a chorus of bird song all about us so we do look up. We have spotted a woodpecker, several robins, bluejays and cardinals, and our beloved chickadees. We are hopeful that the snow will have melted by the first of May.
A new book to look forward to…lovely! So glad Spring is on its way, but wonderful to join you on your nature walk. 🙂

Oh, Susan! Thank you for encouraging us to dream.
Can’t wait for your new book!!
i enjoy your books and posts so much!
I’m hearing birdsong these mornings, our snow has melted, and I wore a raincoat instead of my wool coat today. Spring is coming!
Glad Joe waits while you take pictures for us. A blue beach glass what a find for your walk and a spring mating of birds. Need I remind you birds do it, bees do it even educated fles do it.
Yes I got that! 🙂
Think SPRING & WARM weather !!!
your blogs always make me happy!!!
Spring is arriving in Illinois! We have crocus starting to bloom after having temperatures in the 60s today. Our snow is almost gone, hopefully until next winter!
Enchanted! That’s how I feel after reading today’s blog.
“Despite the forecast, live like it’s spring.”
― Lilly Pulitzer
Love reading your entries and seeing your photos!
Breath of fresh air!
Enjoy the days of warmth (compared to what you’ve had) and the early signs of spring. We have been in full (early) bloom here in Seattle. I have followed your posts and know how anxious you are for spring. I love this season, but then I love every season.
“If winter comes, can spring be far behind” ~Percy Bysshe Shelley
Love your blog!! 🙂
Thanks for taking us on a walk to the beach, Susan and Joe. Loved seeing the Robins in the tree and blue beach glass, too. Yes, Spring is coming, even in Michigan. No Robins yet, and a yard full of snow and a driveway full of ice, but there is hope with the warming weather, that Spring is definitely on the way.
Wonderful pictures. I love the way you write…I feel like I am there. Also the music is perfect… 🙂
Our snow is melting here in Colorado, but I know we’ll get more. In the meantime, the dogs, squirrels, bunnies and I will enjoy the sunshine.
love, love your blog!
Our snow is nearly gone, leaving behind mush for a yard. Making my way to the chicken coop was a squishy experience. Enjoyed reading about your walk Susan. Thanks for sharing all the pictures too.
I was treading gingerly through the snow and ice right along with you, taking time to break up those thin pieces of ice – so much fun!
I just came in from work (teacher) and have put up my feet and am relaxing by reading a few blogs. Yours is always a favorite.
I’d love to have my name thrown into the hat for the drawing. Love books of this sort!
It seems every walk includes a treasure. Your cobalt blue sea glass was a true find. Still waiting for mine. The garden always cultivates hope in its anticipation of the treasures it presents.
Oh dear!!! I had no idea there was a third Mary mason Campbell and pasha Tudor collaboration ..my dear MIL, may she rest in piece, years ago bought the buttery shelf cookbook, and the buttry almanac. She so adored them that she wrote to Mary mason Campbell and had them signed… By both Mrs Campbell and also Tasha Tudor!!!
Fast forward years later,I had had my first and second daughters and came across 6 Tudor books and I loved them, sharing my excitement.. because as a young mother I had just discovered Tasha Tudor, she pulls out the two books and shares her story and then insists on GIVing me the books.
I simply absolutely love gardening and have loved Tasha Tudor work since then. I f I don’t win I am going to do an exhaustive search for the Mary Mason Campbell and Tasha Tudor book on gardening.
Finding those books was on the heels of me discovering Susan’s beautifully illustrated, charming and downright enchanting books. I still can not get enough of them!!!
Oh please please please pull my name!!
dear Mary.. I just read your comment and wanted to say that if “Vanna” doesn’t pick your name that this wonderful gem of a book is offered now in Susan’s web-store…that’s where I found my copy quite awhile ago and I love this book…’just had to tell you …
I love all your posts and adventures in natures, the robins, birds outside your lovely home. The squirels and your lovely cat by the window.
Susan, Here in North Dakota, we had below-zero temps two weeks ago but today it was 52 degrees! Loved the pictures of your walk; it is nice to get outside, isn’t it? We have had hardly any snow this winter, but would not be surprised to have a March or April blizzard. Thanks for the chance to win the Betty Crocker book and bookmark; would treasure them both.
Spring will be here soon. 🙂
Snow is melting, robins are here, and a single dandelion bloomed in my garden. Spring is here!
Susan Branch, Tasha Tudor, gardens…..fabulous!
