Snow Walk, and Garden Giveaway

Today we’re going to mix it up, a snow walk and a garden give-away all in the same post!  MUSICA for slow dancing, Girlfriends. . .

Martha's Vineyard

go outside and play

birds in the snow

Yesterday, for the first time in weeks, maybe even months, we had My House in the Snowa sunshiny, lovely 42º.  We scrambled into our boots and RAN ourselves out the door, for the first walk in all of that time!!!  Our lawn is still covered in snow, but it’s quietly beginning to melt making a continuous little river down our driveway, joining the slightly bigger river on the street, and heading down hill to the harbor.  We weren’t sure what the dirt road that takes us out to the ocean would look like, but we were willing to try, especially when we saw what was going on in the maple tree outside the kitchen window:

Robins!

The photo isn’t clear, but that’s OK, those orange spots are Robins! If this beautiful day is good enough for them, it’s good enough for us!

happy!

birds in the snow

 so here we go

Joe

. . . walking very gingerly . . . It was melting, like a slushy in some parts (the good parts) but there were long lumps of shiny wet ice, and some nice stretches of mud. . . We plot which direction we should fall in case we need to, realizing no one brought a phone, if he breaks his leg, he lays there while I “run” for help. It would be sad.

Joe

The birds were singing, Joe’s trying to figure out where the sound is coming from . . .

Yellow Bird

See him? Way up top in the middle of the picture?  He looks white but he’s a goldfinch, he can’t clap his hands so he shows his happiness with song.

The pond

The goldfinch has a really nice view!  When we walked out of the canopy of the woods, we had our first view of the pond ~ we could see it was still partially frozen . . .

pond

But I have to say, despite how cold it looks, the warm sun on our faces felt as much like spring as breathing into a bouquet of daffodils!  Off came my hat and gloves, unzipped goes the jacket.  THAT’S how nice it was out there!

Are you coming

I’m always behind him . . . he waits, as the ever-patient guy that he is, hands on hips . . .

Fisherman's shack

Can’t just walk right by this little red fisherman’s shack and not stop for a photo . . . crazy man.

a garden

flower border

mud is better

See those broken square-looking things on the ground (talking mostly to the Californians and Floridians right now)?  They are giant ice chips.  When a car goes through a partly frozen puddle, the ice breaks up and scatters. That’s something you don’t see all the time. See how patient Joe is while I take pictures of them?

the sound

We made it to the water, and I have to tell you, it wasn’t easy…. First we had to go through the deep snow in the yard of our friend’s house, then across their deck . . .

rocks

And down that very furthest set of stairs ~ see it back there?  After that, finding a high-ish tide, we had to climb over each rock-piled breakwater, maybe five of them . . . yes, you’re right, I know what you’re thinking, it was heaven out there.  (BTW, while we’re away from home, we had our bedroom windows wide open (for the first time this year); the ceiling fan was on full blast blowing out winter air and exchanging it for fresh spring air, and we knew we were going to sleep like babies after our walk to the sea!)

sea shore book

someone was here first

We discovered that others had been there first.

Eureka

And then, beach booty!  Big piece of dark blue beach glass!

Amazing!

ice chips

More ice chips.  I kind of love them.  Like to break them with my toe. Makes a good noise.  Two nature things happened out there that I didn’t take pictures of: A.) (Pat, you should probably skip this part.)  Because some rather large animal was dead.  I didn’t look because in my accidental half-second glance I could see it was all elbows, knees and feathers and other less identifiable furry parts, and despite my well-known interest in science, this was really not my cup of tea.  Joe looked, he decided it was a coyote AND a turkey, entwined together on the beach. Wow!  We skirt by it, my eyes covered with my hat, and we fall immediately into Morning Science discussion: First off “are there coyotes on the island?”  I didn’t think so. Otherwise I’ve been living in a fool’s paradise thinking we had no kitty-eaters on Martha’s Vineyard.  So, let’s say it was a deer. A deer and a turkey?  girlart“They don’t fight, they don’t eat each other.”  So then here’s what must have happened:  That thing (whatever it is, but it can’t be a coyote) killed the turkey, then, sadly, but deservedly, choked on a bone, fell over and died on top of it. (I just realized, this is kind of like talking about Downton Abbey.)

iced leaves

Anyway, lovely leaves embalmed in ice.  The other nature thing we saw was a pair of birds mating on the road.  That was a first, I have never seen birds do that.  As a scientist, I had never thought about what those little devils did when we left them alone.  We thought they were dead at first, they weren’t moving at all, we didn’t even know there were two of them, till Joe looked closer to figure out which side was up, because this was one weird looking bird.  More Morning Science ensued when all of a sudden, the girl escaped!  OK, I did get a picture of the chase . . .

Inlovewithnature

escape

This is the little father, in hot pursuit! Ah, spring. Quite the adventure!

tire tracks

Tire tracks become puddles . . . Look around, where is the best place to put your foot?  Safest would probably be IN the water.

Yikes

woods

Time to go home . . . so far we have 100% not fallen down!

Joe

And we manage to keep it that way! Usually our walk is 45 minutes, yesterday it was an hour and a half.  That’s from making sure we didn’t break our necks.

Loving the Day

Front row seat to the melting of the snow. (OMG, is he not the most adorable thing in the world?)

hearts and flowers

winter garden

So we all know the snow will go . . .

snowdrops

And waiting for us, under all the ice are our little snow drops (these are from last year, this year’s crop is frozen stiff right now, but soon).  Because, it’s coming, only another week until official . . .

spring

Kitchen gardens

And in honor of the moment, when we are all teetering on the verge of spring, I would love for one of you to enjoy my favorite garden book of all time . . .

flower border

Kitchen Gardens

It’s called Kitchen Gardens, an unassuming little book wonderfully written by Mary Mason Campbell with illustrations by Tasha Tudor.

Kitchen gardens

But it’s by far the most inspiring garden book I’ve ever read.  There are other books with much more detailed information, and definitely glossier pictures, but no book has ever moved me into the garden faster and happier than this one.

flower border

Tasha Tudor illustration

It was published in 1971 and I was lucky enough to happen upon it as my first garden book. “I love how Mary Campbell wrote about the “sunshine, fresh air, and privacy of our gardens. . .”

I thought I would sign this book for you and also add a watercolor bookmark (I’ve been cutting up the bits of paper I use for testing my pen or watercolors and making bookmarks out of them).

If you want to be entered for this giveaway, all you have to do is scroll to the bottom of this post and look for the tiny word “comments” — and leave a comment. Your comment can be just one word if you like; that will be enough to enter you for the drawing. For those of you who get my blog via email, you will have to go to www.162.240.10.175/~susanbs3/susanbranch/ and scroll to the very bottom of this post and find that tiny word . . . “comments” ~ for some reason, they don’t seem to send a “comment” button in an emailed blog.
October 2016Last but not least.  I told you I finished the new calendars for 2016? I thought I would give you a little preview . . . This is “October” for the wall-calendar, and don’t worry, there are pink from me to you with lovepumpkins on the bottom part.  For thee, from me.

And just one more thing I wanted to tell you:  My (our, because I’m always thinking of you when I’m writing) new book is being edited even as we speak. That means the writing part is almost done, after that I’ll paint it and add the photos and hopefully we’ll have it in about six months, maybe by the time we make our first fires next autumn.  I know the title.  But I’m afraid to say it out loud yet.  So let me get used to it, maybe next time! You’ll be the first to know!

Good morning, Susan, this was a breath of fresh air. I’ve been wanting spring to burst forth so badly (in NC) and today is the day I open our windows up to whisk away the winter blahs. I enjoy the pictures of your kitties and have a black and white girl kitty that lives outside –my family is highly allergic 🙁 I so wish we could bring her in. Have a blessed day!

    • sbranch says:

I heard, don’t know if it’s true, that vets have a food additive that take away the thing that makes people allergic to cats . . . it’s for the cat to eat, not the humans.

  2. Denise from Reading, MA says:

Love to win that luscious cookbook! Thanks for the opportunity!

  3. Laura says:

Happy almost Spring! I have been out walking too and doesn’t the sun feel good? I love Spring…it’s my favorite season! Enjoy everyone! xxxooo
    P.s…morning science….LOLS!!!

  4. Tonya B. says:

Delightful looking book. Illustrations look even older than 1971. Thoughts of gardening are with us all. I just laid out all of my seeds to divide the begin indoor, plant early, and wait until last frost is over! Thanks for your blog filled with joy and love of life.

  5. Mary from Ipswich, MA says:

Lovely lovely pics. We were hoping Joe would take a picture of you but it appears that he was paving the way for his sweetheart- making sure the path was safe. 🙂
I love the pics of the birds. As the snow melts I’ve been wondering if I’ll find any “science”. It’s been a tough winter for the critters. Every morning I see the deer on the Ipswich River and it scares me to think that one might fall through the ice. Such beautiful creatures. Nice blue seaglass on your path!!
Anyway, spring is upon us. Would LOVE to win the cookbook. Thank you for making life sweet and taking us a mini vacation every week. God Bless and xoxo

  6. Autumn says:

Aaahhh, Spring! Little signs of it are appearing here in NC, too. My daffodils are up and the tulips are just peeking their little leaves out of the ground. So glad you were able to enjoy your walk with no mishaps. 🙂

Really…..it’s just too much pressure waiting for your new book to come out. lol. I can’t wait to hear the name of it, either!

Thanks for doing the giveaway! I love Tasha Tudor and have many of her books, but I don’t have this one with her lovely illustrations. Thanks for all you do to inspire us, Susan!

  7. Laurel says:

What a lovely walk with you this morning while at my computer, thank you. I love the gardening book, the illustrations are darling. So glad Spring is arriving in your neck of the woods, it is settling here too.

  8. Becky Daugherty says:

Susan, thank your for ‘our’ walk today! It was delightful! The peek into the October 2016 (does it seem possible that 2016 ISN’T that far away?) calender was fun as October is my birth month.
I will start some seeds in the next week or so and can’t wait until I set them out in the garden!
And then I wait and wait until I see some new growth! Ah, Spring!

  9. Patricia Opie says:

Love Tasha Tudor and Gladys Taber and gardens

  10. Sarah says:

Your walk looks beautiful and worth the treachery. I’m so jealous of it, and missing my own spring walks on my Vermont mountain. I’ve been spending the winter in Massachusetts taking care of my mother- Here we have all of the snow and none of the fun. But one nice thing has happened. My dog Kenzie has fallen in love with my mother’s neighbor’s dog Shirley. The snow has made it hard for them to get together; Shirley lives on the other side of a large field. But yesterday even though the snow was slushy and hard to walk through, little Shirley struggled through the field, bounding through snow as deep as she is tall to see her man. Spring is wonderful!

  11. Andrea Vlahakis says:

Susan, thank you for taking us on that lovely walk! We had 50 degree weather yesterday in CT, with tons of warm sun. I think you could almost hear the collective sigh from everyone across the state relishing this first spring-like day.

  12. susan segers says:

    lovely book

  13. Kathy in Illinois says:

I am so ready for spring also, Susan! I hung sheets on the line Monday. My husband had to shovel a path through the snow for me to get to the clothesline! Have a lovely spring!
    God bless, Kathy in Illinois

  14. cecelia says:

    Lovely walk, Thank you!
I am a Tasha Tudor fan from way back and have met her several times.

  15. Anna Barkley says:

This winter was unusually harsh, cold below zero days. Cabin fever is at an all time high here in ohio. I would so love to win that book, to inspire me to get out in the garden. I just love your blog, and your books. Always the highlight of my day when I see you have a new post. Keep up the great work!!!!

  16. Marty from NYC says:

What a lovely, uplifting blog for those of us experiencing similar weather. It is a great time of all things beginning to awaken and move out of the frigid gloom. I am sure it is not all over yet-but what a lovely promise.
I am so excited for you and the new book-I know that it will be wonderful and something for all of us to treasure. The empathy for one another within this blog is amazing-from all over and from disparate ways of living-thank you so much for finding the common ground and reminding us of so many of the good, small, beautiful things that we can share every day.
Best wishes to all-and special thoughts to Jack–will he ever share his secret grilled cheese recipe? Marty

  17. Kristen Garrett says:

    Lovely giveaway!

  18. Jayne Parsons says:

    Hi Susan,
My oldest daughter and I always have a race to see who sees the first robin. My mom and I used to do this too. Anyway, she called me very excited the other day to tell me she had seen not a robin but thousands of them in her back yard. She lives in a small town in northern Indiana. There is a woods in back of her house where she has numerous bird feeders. She was going out to fill them up and she heard a loud roaring sound. She turned around and saw thousands of robins swooping down from the sky. She said she could have reached up and grabbed one if she had wanted to. The noise was so loud her neighbors came outside to see what was going on. The birds stayed around all day, but were gone the next morning. I never knew robins flew in flocks like that. My daughter figures she won this year. I guess she is right. Nature is amazing, surprising us with delights for our eyes.
Can’t believe I missed a garden book with Tasha Tudor’s beautiful art work in it. Her books were well loved in our home. They have been passed on to grandchildren now who love them just as much as their mothers did.
Enjoyed the walk today. Signs that spring is on her way. Have a great day.
    Jayne from Indy

    • sbranch says:

I figure she’s won too! 🙂 I don’t remember robins flocking together in such large (what are they, groups? one does not wish to say flock twice in one’s sentence) anyway, you know what I mean. You have a great day too Jayne!

  19. Lynette Morley says:

I have been waiting for a post from you other than talking about Downton Abbey. I’m currently not watching it but plan to soon! So yay!!! I was so glad for your post today. I look several times a day, everyday for a new post from you!!! Thanks for being the most wonderful person you are!!

  20. Christine Houk says:

So glad your melt is under way! The creek behind my home is now rushing with water, and the resurrection lilies are popping up out of the dark soil. How I love the sight of that vibrant green! Spring is coming…hooray!

  21. Rachel says:

I love hearing about your walk and “morning science”! It’s getting to be Spring in Wisconsin too. There are just little piles of snow in our yard and our last snowman is a little 5 inch heap. I think this is the day he disappears until next year!

  22. Carol Blanchet says:

And your reward for braving the cold and slippery path to the sea….beautiful blue sea glass. Such fun to find that treasure. Thanks for sharing the lovely sights that are in your neck of the woods. Btw – your blog makes me smile. 🙂

  23. Love your post. Wonderful pictures of all the snow. Thank you for the years of just talking to me/us one on one (it always seems)! Makes me 🙂

  24. Judy Ann from Georgia says:

Love, Love the post. I check it everyday to see if there is a new one. It makes my day. Thank you so much for the joy you bring Susan. Judy Ann from Georgia.

  25. Kedra says:

We’ve been thru an amazing winter too, here in the Ozarks – glad to see you back! :-). I love ANYthing that Tasha Tudor illustrated – hope Vanna picks me!

  26. Regina Carretta says:

Susan….thank you for your beautiful photo’s and I look forward to your spring musings! You have inspired me to schedule a trip to Martha’s Vineyard next fall…..a nice break from dear Seattle, where small cottages are giving way to techie boxes that pose as homes….you continue to inspire the love of friends, family, colors, history, animals, art, and the beauty of each season….thank you thank you….

    Seattle, WA

  27. Mary Ann Potter says:

Happy Springtime, Susan! It is another warm day here in NC, and my daffodils are a few inches high. Hooray! I loved going with y’all on your walk when I read this post. I know it’s going to be a fabulous day up there. Sending blessings from here on the farm.

  28. Connie T. says:

Susan, thanks again for a lovely “walk” with you and Joe! Always interested to see your Martha’s Vineyard and you point out the views and nature so wonderfully, I feel as if I’m right there with you two! Would love your garden book! I need to learn how to cook with fresh herbs and vegetables! Thanks so much!

  29. Jane Luellen says:

    I want!

  30. shari harniss says:

  33. shelly says:

    Love your bookmark idea.

  34. Janet D. says:

What a lovely book! I’m so happy to see Spring!

  35. Sharon in North Carolina says:

Love your garden walk photos and story. Found out in our first NC snow/ice how easy it is to fall. I was being so careful but still slipped bruising my ex CA. hip. No broken bones…now on to spring planting. Love these seasons.
The book is so sweet. It is old as am I …was married in 1971.

  36. Bev Brewer says:

What a lovely calendar page with your sweetheart kitties—perfect models for October (and year round)! So exciting about the new book! I remember when you gifted us with a little preview of AFR before it was published. It was a two page spread about Rudyard Kipling and his home and it was just the sweetest glimpse of the beautiful book to come—like a tasty appetizer before a sumptuous banquet!
Speaking of food, this Saturday is PI day (3.1415 in mathematics), so we should all bake up some scrumpie pies for fun!

  37. Brenda Brady says:

Thank you for taking me along on your walk to the sea. I live near the Atlantic Ocean and it is so refreshing to smell the salt air and the pine trees. How lucky are we!!! I would love to win the book to add to my gardening library.

    Brenda

  38. Joan Lesmeister says:

    JOY!!!
Too hard to only leave one word!!! You do give me great JOY, my dear! I can’t even tear myself away to get my 2nd cup of coffee to sip whilst enjoying this wonderful blog!!! Ice chips? I’m in CA, we just have those itty bitty ones in cold drinks!!! Morning science explains it all!!!! Every word, every picture, give-away, & comments fill my heart….a big huge bear hug & THANK YOU!!!!! xoxoxo

  39. Patti from California says:

Good morning, Susan! Thanks for the pics of your snow walk! It’s going to be hitting 80 degrees this weekend here, and I’ve got to pull out some cooler clothes! Not that I mind the sunshine, but what we really need in California is LOTS of rain . . .
I am enjoying watching a pair of mourning doves build a nest on my front porch. I love doves. I’ve been wanting to name my little gray cottage house, the way they do in England, and I think now I’m going with Dove Cottage!
The garden book is lovely — I am such a fan of Tasha Tudor. Enjoy your sunshine!!

  40. Donna Hamilton says:

Loved your post about your walk about with Joe. The dark blue beach glass is lovely and what a treasure. I have never seen beach glass since I live inland (Arkansas). The little garden book looks to be very lovely and with illustrations by Tasha Tudor make it something to treasure. Around Christmas 2015, I was tootling through my local Library book sale and discovered two children’s books by Ms. Tudor on sale for .50 Cents each. I grabbed those up quickly. When I was paying for my new treaures, I discovered that the books had been taken from the library shelves to be sold because they had not been checked from the library in a very long time. What a shame that younger children are not aware of what a treasure Ms. Tudor was.
I would love to win the garden book. I have been planning a new little kitchen garden all winter. Happy almost Spring!
    -Donna Hamilton

  41. Barbara Stillman says:

Would love to win the garden book!! Thank you, Susan!!
    Barbara from Cumming, Georgia

  42. Arnette Webb says:

Thank you for the walk thru the snow. It has already turned too warm for this time of year in Orlando. It’s been in the upper 80’s this week. I would love to own this book!! You have such nice giveaways!!

  43. Dolores Panzica says:

My 86 year old sister has been a Tasha lover and fan since I can remember. This book would mean an awful lot to her. We are both great fans of yours. We have been blessed with an early early spring and know what awaits you. Enjoy it to the fullest.

  44. Dana says:

The snow is nearly gone and we slept with the window open last night. Spring fever is rising in the kitty cats, and in us! Tulips and daffies are pushing up out of the dirt and the redbud is getting ready to burst. We can’t wait for spring and the smell of fresh-cut grass!

  45. Debbie Mason says:

Please please please let me win the book. I LOVE Tasha Tudor and Betty Crocker!!!

  46. Tatiana Sciancalepore says:

Oh my goodness, this isn’t the first time you mention that book! But the first time I read about it I become obsessed with finding one. I check every time I go into a used book store. Nothing yet. But winning one would be just as wonderful!

  47. ann says:

Thanks for the walk through the snow.

  48. Mary Bolton says:

Would love a Tasha Tudor book. My kitty..Tuxedo, says hi to Jack…we love hearing about his antics!

  49. Lynn McCormack says:

    Happy St. Paddys Day!!

  50. Fabienne says:

    Fabienne

  51. Lori says:

Spring is indeed coming! 🙂 Looking forward to your new book too.

  52. Janet W. from Mt. Lebanon says:

Happy spring, Susan! I can’t wait to see your photos of the spring flowers in your garden. They’re always so lovely and uplifting. — Can I “pre-order” your new book now? I’m *so* excited for it!

    • sbranch says:

I thought I’d wait a bit longer for preorder, just to get some of the art work done on it . . . makes me think it’s “really” happening. 🙂 (don’t worry, it is)

  53. Linda says:

As I get older my gardens get smaller but not my love of nature, organic veg freshly picked for that days meal or a bouquet of lilacs or irises to scent the house rather than some spray. Tasha Tudor and you both illustrate the homey things that matter in my life. Thanks for a chance to win this beautiful book.

  54. Ann says:

New to your blog, and enjoying it, but realizing I’m not new to your artwork. It’s nice to put the artist with the art : )

Thanks for the opportunity to win this book!

  55. Lynne says:

Love those robins, haven’t seen one in several years in my part of the South!

  56. Alexa McCabe says:

I love Tasha Tudor she ( besides you) is my favorite illustrator !!! I wondered if you liked her stuff …. All the sweet little details!!! I have many of her books even one sighned by her before she passed away. I haven’t ever seen this one and would love to add it to my collection 🙂 Love your blog and photos !!! I hope for more sunny days for you and Tasha for me 🙂

  57. Cindy says:

I recently discovered your blog and I am enjoying it very much. Your walk is similar to what I am experiencing . We live in the U.P. of MI. Would love to win your book.

  58. Lee says:

Good morning, Susan, The weather in N.C. is showing great signs of spring. I am driving with my sun roof open!
I live in a condo, but use my porch as my garden space. Lots of plants and annuals. This year I am actually planting a blueberry bush…I read there is a dwarf variety. Wish me luck. Would love your book. Thanks for being you. Blesssing, Lee

    • sbranch says:

Blueberry, if I may put in 2cents, loves acidic soil. In California we plant them directly into Peat Moss. Here on the island, they grow wild because of our soil.

  59. Becky says:

Thank you for the snowy tour/walk! It was wonderful to breathe in the crisp, dry air from your neck of the woods. I have adored Tasha Tudor’s illustrations and life style since I was a newly married “hippy type” in 1970. When I saw a photo of her barefoot, milking her goats, I was hooked. My first purchase was a children’s book called “A is for Annabelle” and I named my daughter….Annabelle! I continued to happily collect her books and even if I am not chosen, I’m going to do my best to track down this one for her illustrations. Thanks and have a wonderful day! Oh, btw, what have you been cooking lately? Most recent menu?

  60. Rebecca Walsh says:

Good Morning and glad to see spring is slowly showing up somewhere in the country. More wet weather for Denver this weekend. I finally figured out the disconnect in your Downtown Abby posting, our PBS station is a week behind what you are seeing, so you will get the new episodes in January before us. LOL.

  61. Kathy Korb says:

Hi, I love that little garden book! I saw it at the library! Thank you for the drawing.
    Kathy

  62. Valarie Adams says:

Thanks so much for the tour to the sea! Just so you know, I absolutely adore your book A Fine Romance. And all your other books too!

  63. Candice OHIO says:

    Hi Susan,
I just returned from my visit to England to attend my God-daughters wedding and it was gorgeous early Spring there! Snowdrops and Primroses everywhere, Hellebores, Daffodils, Winter Aconites and Crocuses and Daphne shrubs that smelled so lovely. All the trees were greening-up and some early ones were blooming. So after arriving back home in Ohio and Winter is still all about, I so much enjoyed your inspiring blog today to remind me that Spring is just around the corner here and I will be blessed to experience another dose of Springtime!! Lucky ME!! I have some little bits I picked up over there that I am going to be sending to you through snail-mail. I thought they would be of interest to you. Hope that you enjoy them! I will look forward to the give-away!! What a lovely book to have! Have a wonderful day and thank you for sharing you and Joe’s late Winter/Early Spring walk with all of us girlfriends!!
    Hugs,
    Candice

  64. Ann says:

    I love your cat!

  65. Susie says:

Ahh, Spring! We are lucky in Kentucky- first snowdrops, crocus, and daffodils are appearing. I also can hear Spring Peepers!
I used to get that book at my library. Love it.
Looking forward to my trip to Martha’s Vineyard in June! Can’t wait for flowers to bloom!

  66. Karen L. from Memphis says:

Our snow has gone and the rains are upon us. Right now we have MUD and puddles. We have had a winter experience of a couple of days paralyzing snow which is nice. The Red-tailed Hawks are out hunting and the geese and ducks are pairing up for their family season….love the science of the season’s change!
Hope you continue to have above freezing temps and sunny days! Love your seaside walks and science!

  67. Denise W. Jose says:

The weather has been glorious in central NY the last few days. Smells like spring. 🙂

  68. Ellette says:

As always I love the photos of your walks! I too take a walk every day. I say it’s because I need to get the dogs out moving but I know it’s for me and my peace of mind. I find “science” on our land all the time!

  69. Lizz Tucker says:

Thank you for the fresh air and inspiration! You are a marvel and a blessing – I love being a Girlfriend, so much more than just a “fan”! Sun shining brightly and everything starting to bloom quite early up here in Idaho! Shine on!

Over by the golf course, under the eucalyptus trees, surrounded by hummingbirds? Is that where you are? Go to Bayside Cafe, have Tres Leche Cake and think of me!

      • nancy says:

Yes- I love to wander the town while my husband is golfing, its a perfect weekend trip for us. Love Bayside Café but I left before hearing about The dessert- oh well, I will just have to go back again- challenge accepted 🙂

        • sbranch says:

They are famous for it! I used to beg them for the recipe, but Noooooo. I just love the way it smells in that campground. Have you followed the trail up the hill at the back of the campground? It’s a nice walk, with nice views.

  75. Jane Grayson says:

Lovely blog post! I adore Tasha Tudor’s work and found how she lived fascinating. Hard to get her books/work here in the UK though.

Good morning, Susan! It was wonderful to take the walk to the water with you and Joe, a real early spring experience. Here in old southern California we’re jumping right into summer. 🙁
It will be in the 80s and 90s for the next few days. We spent time yesterday in the amazing Huntington Library gardens yesterday – breathtaking but my oh my, my allergies went crazy.

Thanks for the opportunity to win that lovely book!

I love the photo of the robins in the tree,,,,even if it IS blurred! Spring and Hope springs eternal. Thanks for the opportunity to win such a fine book!

  82. Mary Farrington-Edwards says:

Oh what wonderful pictures of melting snow, the beach, and spring coming. Thank you. Here in Texas, where winter is either muggy and hot or muggy and chilly, seeing a place where the world goes to sleep and then wakes up is a lovely tonic.

  83. Winnie Nielsen says:

Oh Susan, this was the best morning science walk ever! Robins are my favorite and they were here in MY Florida yard devouring all the grubs and worms before leaving to points North. Maybe some of them were at my house just a few weeks ago?? Wouldn’t that be fun? Science mornings are some of my favorite posts you do. Isn’t it fun to see what is happening a few states away?

It is good to see the photos of the melting snow. Golly, you all have had a tough Winter this year! I am so looking forward to that post, however, where you show us your yard all abloom in daffodils. It is coming, I know it and I can’t wait! Till then, continue your very careful morning walks. Thanks for sharing!!

  84. Kathy Wagner says:

Hi Susan. I’ve been looking for Kitchen Gardens in every antique store I and my husband went to this winter, but no luck. Maybe I’ll get lucky in your give-away. Thanks so much.

  85. Debbie, NM says:

I have loved digging in the dirt and watching things grow since I was a little girl. What a wonderful treasure 🙂

  86. Amy says:

    Ohh! Beautiful Spring!

  87. judy says:

Dear Susan, Your illustrations have always reminded me of Tasha Tudor’s art with a bit of Joan Walsh Anglund thrown in too. But then, you are an original and I love to see what you are drawing at the moment. Thanks for taking us on your walk and thanks for the chance to win such a dear book.

  88. Karen Nelsen says:

Some of my very favorite posts of yours are the walks you and Joe take on that path. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for sharing it with us. Here in Chicago waiting on Spring as well, be still my heart!!! It’s coming.

Really like the neat book that you are giving away, thank you.

  95. Vivian Price says:

Glad you could finally go for a walk…it won’t be long until they will be a part of every day. This winter has been especially brutal for the Northeast….and one of the worst for the Middle South. Everyone is so longing for sunshine and warm weather.

My daffodils and crocus are blooming, so I do have a sweet view out my window.

Love hearing from you, and I’m like you, it’s probably a good idea to have a cellphone with you on treacherous walks.

  96. Marva says:

Susan-I am glad you are finally thawing out and hope spring is just around the corner for you. We haven’t had nearly the snow you have this year and have been enjoying temperatures in the 70’s this week in the Midwest. Sending blessings your way!

  97. Starr miller says:

    Good Morning Susan,
So happy to see Martha’s Island is melting and birds are appearing.
Weather in Chicago is warming up also.
Love your photos and thoughts. Can’t wait for the new book!
I read an old one that you would love, if you haven’t heard of it before.
“The Moonflower Vine” by J. Carleton. It’s simply wonderful.

  98. Pam F. says:

Oh i love Jack and Girl Kitty! Thanks so much for sharing your walks with all of us.

  99. Karen Schumacher says:

I’m visiting family in southern California & it’s going to be 90 degrees today! What a blessing I can cool off by reading about your snow walk.

  100. Jan says:

    Susan,
Spring is definitely in the air here too. Snow has been melting the last few days and I can finally see my dirt driveway. Waiting yet to see the first robin though. Picked up my matted and framed “Grandma’s Fruit Bowl” picture and it’s beautiful! Am so happy with it. Looks perfect in my kitchen. Well, must get moving and get some work done around here. Have a great day!
