PROUD MOMMY

Happy Monday Girlfriends! MUSICA . . . We’ve been busy-busy, as usual. How’s everything with you?  Joe and I are just getting “ready to GO” cross the country and meet everyone . . . doing little things around the house so I can feel proud that when we come home, nothing will upset us.  Like dirty curtains or something. Hate that.

IMG_6954

Joe repainted the downstairs bathroom, which needed it. We took all the pictures off the wall, cleaned them, washed and shined the glass, and put them back. And then I washed this little dresser scarf we have on a white painted table in there, oooooh, needed it bad.

Spring is for Dust Bunnies.

IMG_6950

I love old-fashioned starch you mix with water . . . crisp and white is the name of the game. Starched things stay looking fresh a LOT longer than unstarched things. By about a year I would say.IMG_6952So pretty. So happy here in . . .

domesticityIMG_6931

I did the little curtain in the bathroom too. Ancient though it is. But starched, you can’t tell. If this curtain could talk!

IMG_6933

When I first moved to the Island I brought lace tablecloths from California and made bedroom curtains from them. This curtain watched me write my first book! It saw Joe and I fall in love! It’s the last survivor of them all and I am babying it.

IMG_4587

Section-by-section, I remove dishes from the shelves, put them in the dishwasher, wash the shelves and put them back. The last time I did this was last fall . . . We’ll be gone two months and if I didn’t do it now, by the time we get home, this would probably reach out and slap me the moment I walked in the door. It’s all sparkly now, and I’m a proud mommy. My houseIMG_3098

As for spring, we’ve had a week of anything but, including rain storms, huge winds, and giant clumps of snow.

IMG_6986

Can you see it out there? It’s all melted now, but we’ve even had fires and made chicken stock. Gathering in the last bits of winter.

IMG_7016

Y U M

IMG_6928With just a soupçon suggestion of spring . . . because my kitchen is my favorite place.IMG_6916

We stopped by the nursery before the rain started . . . very cheery . . . the juxtaposition between the indoors and the out!

IMG_4240

Between snow drops and rain yesterday, I ran out and took pictures because oh yes, it is coming.  Yellow is the rightest color for spring. ♥

IMG_6387

Unless it’s pink. The buds for the magnolia and cherries are fat and swollen and ready to pop on the first sunny day. And we’ll still be here to make one of these bouquets. oh happy day

IMG_3935

Oh yes, and hang some laundry on the line. Fluff the quilts. We are happy!dreams

IMG_4990

I do think we will miss this . . . the Beauty Bush will have to bloom without us here to see it.IMG_4992

And likely we will be too late for this when we get home in July. Definitely the peonies will be long gone. But if it gets nice before we go, I will be planting the garden the best I can so it will be pretty when we get back. Home. My favorite place. Home, without a book to write, just a house to clean, a stove to cook things on, and a garden to dig in? Oh, you know, I am so looking forward to that.homeIMG_1043And these guys. I will miss them. Hardest thing of all to say goodbye to. Because I’m afraid they will think I’m abandoning them. But I’m NOT.

HOWEVER, there is a lovely exchange . . . I get to go see everyone, and put faces to the lovely comments I’ve received from my Girlfriends while creating books . . . As I’ve mentioned, there can be a real loneliness to book writing . . . but you make it much more bearable! So, as usual, I thank you from the bottom of my heart. If you are going to one of the signings, be sure to wear your Fairy Tale Girl Badge so we can know each other . . . You can get it Here . . .

Girlfriends at the Learned Owl

And Lookit how cute you are. I can’t wait. . . The funnest book signings in the world are what I get to go to. Joe loves them too. And we didn’t get to go for The Fairy Tale Girl . . . we stayed home so I could finish Martha’s Vineyard Isle of Dreams.  This photo was taken back in 2013 when we went for A Fine Romance . . . so this next book signing adventure is actually a double whammy.kissing boring goodbye

girlfriends

This was from the tea party in Wilamette (near Chicago) in 2013, and we’re going back for another one!  Who wouldn’t! These people are so happy because they have just been given the best tea in the world, cakes and everything! I’m telling you, I have the best Girlfriends!

girlfriends at booksigning

So often, it’s a family affair, mom’s and daughters and sisters come together . . . LOVE it.love

IMG_8806

You all know Chris Wells from Texas who leaves such nice comments on the Blog? There she is (on the left) in Ohio with her whole family! I have no words for how honored I felt that they came to see me.

get-attachment.aspxAnd some of my California Girlfriends . . . came from Palo Alto to San Luis Obispo. Honored again! ♥

exercise girl

So yes, I’m doing this . . . lots of it. Not that it’s helping in any visual way, but I’m feeling pretty perky on the inside with lots of energy, despite the ravages of time fully developed on the outside. Whatever.

Mas MUSICAIMG_6943

And I got this sent off to the printer . . . It’s the 30th Anniversary Edition of Heart of the Home with lots of new pages and art and recipes. SO exciting. The endpapers in the first book were blank, so I got to decorate them for this book, and lots of other things . . . and of course this one will have a nice bright red ribbon. I can’t help it. I have always loved books with ribbons.RibbonMVYankeeAdAnd I did a cute ad for Yankee Magazine . . . for the May-June issue. AND, I got an entertainment lawyer to work out the details on the option for the three books for either a movie or a TV series!  Remember that? It is still sort of happening! I don’t think it WILL happen, because it’s just too crazy, but it still could! It hasn’t fallen through yet, and until it does, I intend to enjoy the heck out of it! The first thing the lawyer asked me was who I wanted to play me.  That’s how I knew I would like him. Those are the fun questions!Birthday game

And I invited my Island girlfriends to a TGIT (uesday) Birthday Party next week ~ because it’s my birthday and I get to give THEM presents, which they deserve for having such a terrible MIA girlfriend like me for so long.  I promise to be better (as soon as I get home!). 🙂 Oh well.

IMG_6958

And look, somedays I even find this on Amazon.  Not always, but sometimes, and it definitely cheers me up!  And this is because of you too, don’t think I don’t know it. We are all word of mouth Girlfriends, this I know. And I love that we are selling the book for less than they are! And ours our signed. Ha! And we have them, but they don’t!  Oh the power. Proud mommy.  And then, yesterday… this happened:IMG_6959

Oh yeah . . . the books came to the Island.  And today, the books arrive in California and the mailing BEGINS!!!

IMG_6859

And this is the first thing you will see when you open your book . . .

IMG_6960

Here they are on my table . . . I’m signing them for my brothers and sisters and best friends, and Tuesday Girls, and Diana, and Publisher’s Weekly and Little, Brown and everyone I have known for the last half century.

IMG_6961My kitchen is now complete.  It’s a strange feeling to see the book actually here. But a good one. And the other thing I’m doing is signing SIX of them for giveaways to YOU, right NOW. So this is your moment to leave a comment. ♥ If you already bought a signed book from us, that’s okay, this one will be personalized to you, with your own name, and you can give the other one to your best friend. It’s a win-win!art things

And Joe had a good idea . . . he said that I should save my worn-out paintbrushes, the ones I used to paint Martha’s Vineyard, Isle of Dreams with and give them away with these books, along with one of my paint-blotters-turned-bookmark.  So each book in this Giveaway will have a paintbrush and a signed bookmark . . . So sign yourself up for the drawing by leaving a comment below . . . I already warned Vanna about the extra workload of drawing SIX names this time, poor girl. She’ll need a vacation in Cannes after this one! Love you Girls, Happy Spring! Still working on fabric and Willard! . . . talk soon!come see usstripofflowers

  2. Melody says:

Oh, Susan, I can’t wait to get my hands on Martha’s Vineyard Isle of Dreams… I love anticipating a package in the mail. Your blog of Spring cleaning and domesticity is inspiring me to get busy and do some of that too. Lord knows things could use freshening up. Good luck on the book tour. I am hoping to get to one of your events. I’m shooting for the one in St. Charles, MO. Here’s hoping… Love, Melody

Halfway through… pg 189 … The Nor’easter…. SUSAN!!! IT’S JUST THE BEST! REALLY! I am not sure how one person could be more adorable, darling, or inspiring. I hate Cliff (The nerve of him calling to say let’s be friends. Dimmi is so great…) I can only think of strangling him (not really, but kinda) I’m so proud of you and I am at a point in my life where I need to do something new as I had to close my petsitting business due to my health issues and I have been a bit depressed (your painting of that little dog waiting for scraps made me cry) I feel inspired as I am sure everyone will. THIS IS JUST SOOOO WONDERFUL AND I AM SO HAPPY FOR YOU. YOU HAVE ANOTHER HIT ON YOUR HANDS!!! CHARMING COZY DROP DEAD GORGEOUS 🙂 Breaking for dinner then back for more. XOXO

    • sbranch says:

Oh Charissa! Thank you so much for taking the time to tell me. I really appreciate it. I’m a bit on pins and needles over here! 🙂 I’m so happy you are liking it!

    • Chris Wells From Knickerbocker, W. TX says:

Yay…and I just got a notice that my book shipped today! Thanks Charissa for the first review! I cannot wait!

      • sbranch says:

I feel like I’m a giant Las Vegas dealer and have just dealt out cards to everyone I know and now they are just about to look at their hands! xoxo

      • Charissa says:

Hi Chris Wells So nice to see your picture and have a face to go with a name:) The book is the best Everything you want it to be and more You will love it of course Are you going to Austin for the book signing? Hope to see you there

    • charissa says:

SWEET SUE, YOUR BOOK IS A MAGICAL TOUR DE FORCE! I hope I can come up with all the right words to do it justice. I stayed up to finsh it tonight. I woke my sweet hubby, Tom again and again from the laughter and the sniffles. Even though I knew the ending, I was still on the edge of my seat the whole way. The book is so gorgeous. The paintings are so exquisitely perfect and the photos made me feel like I lived it with you. And in some ways, I did. Our lives have a lot of commonalities and it was like a balm for the soul going over things with a friend. I loved learning more about the details of your life. Your hopes and dreams and how you worked through things. SO INSPIRING!!! I LOVED HOW YOU DID THE FIRST LETTER OF EACH PARAGRAPH AND HAD THE ART. I loved every little thoughtful detail you expertly placed. Did I mention that I LOVE THIS BOOK?!?! I feel like I need to recuse myself from the words hate and strangle I used earlier. They may have been to strong now that we are further away from that time(Sorry, Cliff;)) No wonder they want to option the movie/TV rights. THIS IS GOING TO BE A BEST SELLER JUST LIKE THE OTHERS AND YOUR NAME IS GOING TO BE IN LIGHTS! You are the nicest sweetest cutest coziest funniest enchantingest person I know. Everything I strive to be.

GIRLFRIENDS: THIS IS YOUR REMINDER. PLEASE REMEMBER TO GIVE BACK TO SUSAN BY LEAVING A REVIEW ON AMAZON or GOODREADS or ANYWHERE AND EVERYWHERE YOU CAN. TELL EVERYONE YOU KNOW. WE OWE HER.

I really could go on and on about the whole thing. You can get off the pins and needles. There is not a thing to worry about. Hugs to Joe for making you so happy. Xoxo You deserve the best .

Also, I have to give a shout out to all the women in the book. Most especially, Diana. YOU ARE ALL AWESOME!

Thank you for being brave yet again to share this with the world. You will help thousands, maybe millions, in ways you cannot imagine. Xoxo

      • charissa says:

Sorry for all the grammatical errors i`m sweepy:)

      • sbranch says:

NOW I WANT TO GO INTO ALL CAPS!!! The comment section of the blog does not allow my normal comfort zone of art to express my feelings ~ I would be digging into my file right now for some fireworks if I had the choice. Thank you so much dear Charissa. You just don’t know. Did you leave that fabulous comment on Amazon? Because it was my first one, and I could not believe it when I saw how beautifully written it was, and after reading this, I think it must have been you. Thank you is just too small. I am so happy to read your words. Tears. I’m saving your comment to show to Joe when I take him his tea this morning, he will love it too. Thank you, thank you, thank you. XOXOXOXOXO

        • Charissa says:

Oh no, Susan… It wasn’t me on Amazon:( Although, I am now the second:) I just couldn’t see straight last night and went to bed The first review is so very eloquent. I wish it was me. I could see why you thought it was me. I did my best on the second, but she had already said everything I wanted to say. Darn her, but really glad she did. I tried to add to it and promote the website with autographed copies;) I will write more other places. I know you will forgive me for not being the first and hoping my previous comment said what was in my heart:) xoxo

          • sbranch says:

OH, well, just before I came back to read more comments, I read the second review on Amazon (before I knew it was from you) and cried! I even wrote you back. Too much! You were PERFECT!!!! I could not ask for anything more. Thank you so much Charissa. Yes, I totally felt it came from your heart. Thank you a thousand times. xoxoxoxo

          • Charissa says:

            Yaaaaaaay — said like Kermit

        • Sarah in Tucson says:

Dear Susan, it was me that wrote the first review for your book on Amazon 🙂 I had just finished it and I did hold it to my chest and sigh with tears in my eyes. No words could do your beautiful book the justice it deserves and it means so much to me that you liked it! I’ve loved your writing since I was about 11 years old (I’m 32 now) and discovering your books will always be intertwined with the feelings of a magical Christmas or gardening with my Mom and Grandma. My Mom, my oldest daughter and I are all coming to the tea and book signing in Prescott and we are all so excited! I will probably cry since I get to meet one of my heroes! I hope you have a wonderful birthday and thank you again for your beautiful books.

          • sbranch says:

Well, that was wonderful Sarah, and I treasure it, I do, you just don’t know, it was beautifully written! You cried, I cried, so it all balanced out! Thank you so much. I’m so glad you, your daughter and your mom are all coming to the tea party in Prescott, that is just perfect. Be sure to remind me that you’re the one that wrote that first review so I can give you an extra hug. xoxo Thank you!!!

          • Sarah in Tucson says:

I’m so happy, see you there!

          • Charissa says:

Sarah in Tucson, you said it soooooo beautifully and perfectly. And much more eloquently than I ever could. When Susan thought it was me, I felt so bad that it wasn’t, but I was so happy that someone else loved her and the book so much too:) Well done! xoxo

          • sbranch says:

You should never feel bad Charissa! You are such a sweetheart!

          • Sarah in Tucson says:

Also, I’m reading it again! It’s just SO good!

          • sbranch says:

            😘

          • Sarah in Tucson says:

Thank you Charissa! You wrote a really good one too. Us Girlfriends love our Susan Branch books & want everyone to read them! 🙂

          • Charissa says:

            thanks, Sarah. 🙂

  6. Lindsey says:

Always such a treat to read your posts Susan. I am getting sadly toward the end of Fairy Tale Girl; what a joy to read and also important, as a warning for women who tend to give themselves away to their men. Thank you for writing it. It’s as enjoyable and funny as it is important and timely for this/my generation of women (who still don’t have it figured out…).
I would dearly love to win one of your signed books – really cannot wait to read this third one!! – so I am definitely leaving a comment on this post!!!
Hoping to see you at Denver’s Tattered Cover in late May.
    Best blessings,
    Lindsey

    • sbranch says:

There’s a fairy tale in so many of us, men and women, and I love that about us, despite what it does to us! See you in Denver Lindsey!

      • Lindsey says:

Wow, Thanks for your reply Susan! 😀
I used to think of my life as Charmed, but the charm sort of ran out and now I’m in a phase of “what the fairy tale’s doing to me” ha!, but I hope I will get to look back and see that it led me where I needed to go.
You’re a mighty inspiration. Thank you for that!
        See you in May!!
        Lindsey

        • sbranch says:

My fairy tale turned to disaster, which then turned back into a fairy tale, so it does seem to go around! See you then! xoxo

          • Lindsey says:

That is true! Your life is proof of it, which is so neat. That the charmed luck can totally disappear, only to reappear when it’s least expected.

In fact I’m glad you wrote A Fine Romance first, so we could read that one first, and know there is a happy ending down the line, and things do get better for you…before reading the ‘back story’ in Fairy Tale Girl!
And while I’m commenting I might as well tell you too, what an utter delight it was to read A Fine Romance. I raved to my mom that it was The Most Enjoyable Book I Have Ever Read, EVER. That was such a sweeping statement that she was intrigued and read it herself; about a week later I got a phone call from her practically screaming with joy and delight and we screeched for at least an hour over the phone about the book, and parts we loved, and how we both had to go on youtube to find out what a wood pidgeon sounds like…. and on and on and on.
Sure do love your books, and YOU!
            Happy Friday,
            Lindsey

          • sbranch says:

LOL “we screeched for over an hour” — oh dear, that is wonderful ~ mother-daughter screeching has GOT to be the best. Thank you a million times Lindsey and please say hello to your mom for me.

          • Lindsey says:

            (Replying to your reply…)
Indeed, my mom is such a dear friend to me and I cherish her.
            I will tell her hi!
Happy Birthday to YOU tomorrow Susan!!!
            Bye for now,
            Lindsey

  7. Ellen Johnson says:

It’s the worst part. I’m never quite assured that they “understand.” Joe says to forget them and concentrate on him.😋

      • Judy Young says:

You can call home and have your friends put you on speaker phone and talk to your kitties! They will at least know that you haven’t “abandoned” them!

  27. Caroline Aicard says:

Oh my goodness, this post is bubbling over with excitement of all kinds!

    Anyway, happiest of trips!

  36. Susan McKenna says:

    Dear “Sweet Sue,”
I have/had a second cousin in Paris who just passed on in March to a better place at age 86. She was a former archeologist, but mainly an artist with paintings and sculptures in museums and parks throughout the world. She knew Chagall and Dali , to name a few. Her name was Terry (Terezie) Haass. Terry and I communicated for several years via letters, cards and telephone. Terry never had a computer or cell phone, nor did she want one. Because of other obligations, sadly, our three attempts to visit her at her home in Paris never took place. Her brother and sister-in-law were with her during her last few weeks. What did I ask her brother to bring me back to remember her by?…. One of her paintbrushes!!!! Great idea, Joe! Great fun and safe travels! 💕🙋

    • sbranch says:

The perfect thing. When my grandma died, I just wanted one of her wooden cooking spoons. I’m so sorry you lost your friend, what an interesting life she led!

      • Carrie says:

        Dear Ms.McKenna.,

What rich life experiences your second cousin had – knew Chagall and Dali!!! And imagine all the others….Such wonderful family history. I hope you share more abour your cousin as more stories unfold.

So sorry for your loss, Ms. McKenna.

      • Susan McKenna says:

Thank you so very much. Yes, yes! Your grandma’s wooden spoon … A treasure indeed. My treasures include my Grandfather, Karl Ludwig Grimm’s baking tools. He was a trained pastry chef in Vienna during the reign of Emperor Franz Joseph. When I use them I feel he is beside me. Also, another treasure is a petit point purse, hand-worked by my great-great grandmother in the 1800’s. It is framed and hanging in a shadow box in our living room. I am able to unlatch the box and remove it, and hold it from time to time. As as cousin Terry Hauss said, “Don’t just hold it…. Use it every now and then!” When I received it from Terry’s brother, the clasped frame was missing. I searched on eBay and found a beautiful sterling frame with six cherubs on each side; twelve was the number of children my great-great grandmother had. Perfect! Eagerly awaiting your New book! Happy Birthday Girlfriend! I turn 70 on June 25th! How did that happen? Where did the years
        go?

        • sbranch says:

What treasures!!! Wonderful stories. I am celebrating the “I’m still not 70 birthday this year” but not next! Thank you Susan!

  37. Becky Groff says:

Have a great trip-When I am having a crummy day; your blog always brightens it! Thanks you
    Becky

  38. Wendy says:

    Dear Susan,
Thank you so much for the lovely giveaways and thank Joe for the paint brush idea. Perhaps if I win it it will help my watercolor painting. I am not an artist but just have fun. Your work inspires me by its beauty.
Thanks for the spring cleaning encouragement. I love it!

    • sbranch says:

You are probably more of an artist than you give yourself credit for. It took me a long time to accept that moniker and I bet there are lots of people like me that way. xoxo

  39. RebyaFalk says:

    Have a Happy Birthday, Susan.
Also, may your trip be great.

  40. Joan Brosnan says:

I enjoy hearing about all the cleaning that you are accomplishing! After being sick for two weeks my greatest accomplishment today was throwing away old mail and cleaning off my desk. Could I win a book out of over 2000 entries???? I can dream about it!!!

  41. Belinda says:

Happy Day! Happy Day!! Happy Day!!! Wow…I can hardly believe my book is on it’s way……BUT to win a paint brush that you held to create the lovely pictures in your beautiful book asnd a bookmark!?! Oh my goodness Joe, what a FABULOUS idea!! We thank you! You are the MAN and we know why Susan fell in love with you! I cannot wait for the book tour to hit Georgia. I know it is a ways off…but I am soooooooo EXCITED!!!! The house looks lovely…..fresh starched linens!!! The pictures of an upcoming Spring are so pretty! I hope you see a bit of it before you leave but if not I am sure you will see it on your road trip. Fabric and Willard coming…oh my goodness…that is the kind of stuff dreams are made of!! Wishing you a FABULOUS and safe book tour!! ENJOY!!

    • sbranch says:

He made me save my stubby pencils too . . . I’m going to give those away in the next Willard! Joe is brilliant! Thank you so much Belinda!

  42. Wendy says:

Happy Birthday! Also I received an email that your new book has shipped! Yea!
PS… How does one use starch and water for That old fashioned starch look?

    • sbranch says:

You buy a jug of starch at the supermarket. It tells you how to mix it on the outside of the jug. But basically you shake the starch well, then mix 2 to 1 . . . 2 cups water to 1 cup starch, in a bowl. Then put your fabric in. Moosh it around, wring it out, and let it partially dry. Then either roll it up and put it in a plastic bag in the fridge to keep it until you want to iron it. Or, just iron it. SO easy. Good on white cotton blouses too . . . you use a stronger mixture, more starch, for things like curtains, dresser scarves, and damask tablecloths. A little less for napkins and blouses.

  43. Terri Hoppes says:

You bring such happiness to my world, thank you!!!!

  44. Joan Hutchins says:

    Hi Susan,
Your comment on making curtains from those beautiful lace tablecloths so long ago, reminded me of how I did the same . I didn’t have lace fabric , but used a sweet tiny floral . There’s something about walking into a fabric store and a plant nursery ……they both hold so many possibilities ! Both sweet fabric prints and small potted flowers , can turn a house into a home for very little expense …..just our time …..and it’s exciting to spend time creating something cozy for our home sweet home . Thanks for dusting off those happy memories , from so long ago …..a time of promise and hope , somewhat like Springtime !
Have a wonderful birthday and book tour . Happy trails !

    • sbranch says:

They are both like paint brushes . . . you can make magic with fabric stores and nurseries! Thank you so much Joan!

  45. Anne says:

The happiest of birthdays for you!
Thank you for sharing yourself with all of us..all my 5 daughters are in love with your books..me too!
We can hardly wait to see you at Vromans..safe travels..
    anne

    • sbranch says:

I know how it feels to share things with your mom, makes me very happy to hear that Anne! See you at Vroman’s!!

  46. Dottie in Pa says:

    Susan,
Wishing you a safe trip on your booksigning tour. To bad I’m not close enough to one of your stops. Hope to have one or two of your books in my hands very shortly.
Best wishes for a Happy Birthday.

  47. Lee Rose says:

Happy Birthday Susan. You are adorable.

  48. Susan Stout says:

Susan, have a wonderful birthday! I was so excited to get an email today saying my copy of your newest book has been mailed to me!!! The only problem is it’s a Mother’s Day present so I cannot read it until May! Something wonderful to look forward to! Thank you for your lovely and fun to read books!!! Again happy birthday!

    • sbranch says:

I couldn’t decide whether it should come out Mother’s Day or for my Birthday, and I think you can see what won . . . but it’s really a Mother’s Day gift, so you are doing the right thing!

  49. Charlene Mattheews says:

    Hi Susan,

I am so excited just to know you have another great read for all of us to enjoy!! You take us with you to an enchanted place! Can hardly wait!!!

  50. Merci says:

YIPPIE!!!! Received my book in the mail today!!! Way to excited to read; wouldn’t put it past me to stay up til 3 in the morning! Love the jacket, sooo many pictures and lots to say! Here I go!

  51. Kathy Ross says:

Oh, I want to win too! Been following Susan for years and years (and years). A personalized keepsake would be wonderful.

  52. Shirley says:

Susan, I have all of your books and can’t wait for this new one. I’ve been collecting your work since I fell in love with the art work on your recipe pages published in Country Living Magazine. Happy Birthday! I’m a spring baby, too!

  53. Marilyn S says:

It came! It’s here! It was sitting on my porch when I got home today. I unwrapped it and very carefully opened it – first the back cover and then the front cover and then a few places in the middle so the spine doesn’t break, just as my 1st grade teacher taught us as the proper way to open a brand new hardback book. Lovely ribbon, lovely artwork, just lovely everything. It is sitting on my bedside table, just waiting. Maybe I will have to take just a small peek tonight. :))

    • sbranch says:

Your first grade teacher, how sweet that she taught you that little piece of information.

  54. Ladonna says:

Dear Susan, Spring Fever of 101 !! And so happy to be near delirious with colors & birds & books & bunnies & kitties & lambs & blue sunny skies with warming breezes & green grass!!! Now fabric too?!! Our cups run over!! Your art, words, photos, & sharing of happiness– PLUS giveaways– well, you’re cookies & cake & brownies & candy & pie — the best of sooo sweet!!!!

  55. Candi, Long Beach, CA says:

Can hardly wait for the new book! Received the email today that it’s been shipped. Thank you so much for all the happiness and joy you bring to all of us!

  56. Rosarito says:

Can’t wait to get my copy. Good luck to everyone.

  57. Jane says:

My book arrived to Maine today! Alas your signings never make it up here to my dismay! But I am very much looking for some free time (that’s an oxymoron with six children and a house full of furry friends!!!, to read the book! thanks! And here’s hoping I win!!! Blessings,

    • sbranch says:

Yes, I understand about the free time. You have none. But you have memories! We’ll come up sometime, and I hope you win too! xoxo

      • Rhonda D. says:

Oh yes, please come to Maine sometime Susan. Then those of us in the Maritimes and surrounding parts of Canada can get to meet you. What a treat that would be. I got my email yesterday that my book is on the way. I’m so excited just reading the comments from those who have already received theirs. I love Christmas, but I think this is better! I’m on pins and needles.

        • sbranch says:

Well, you know, you are not the only one! 😳 I’ve been on pins and needles ever since I finished writing it. We are all in it together!

  58. Joan says:

Was so surprised to receive my book so quickly. Can’t wait to read it. Couldn’t help myself just had to thumb thru it. Can’t believe all the artwork and photos. Congratulations. It is evident that you put so much of yourself into this book. Other people write books but no one hand writes it, has quotes that perfectly fit, and then adds watercolor artwork it is unbelievable!! I was happy to hear you were going to give signed copies to some lucky girlfriends but WOW as an artist and calligrapher when I found out Joe came up with the idea of your brushes and bookmarks I was beside myself. I can’t imagine to be that lucky to win. I will frame it and hang it in my studio!! Oh well enough begging!
One thing for sure – will have fun meeting u in New Hope as I have mentioned in previous blogs. Safe traveling and you will love the area. Joan🌷

  59. Mary Lou says:

There’s nothing like a book to revive one’s soul. Happy trip!

  60. Carol JOLLY says:

    Hi Susan and Girlfriends..

I know I am a little late to the game, but I just finished “The Fairy Tale Girl” two days ago (in THREE sittings..) and absolutely loved it. I so identify with your upbringing and love of Massachusetts! It is one if my favorite places, too!

I am a frequent Woods Hole visitor (The Landing and Sleepy Hollow Motor Lodge being two beloved haunts)….so I cannot wait to read your new book about Martha’s Vineyard.

My husband and I traveled to the Vineyard for the first time last September, and to my chagrin, never got farther than the Black Dog and the beach (where I got the most beautiful sand for my sand jars). We have talked about going back to see more of the beautiful island and possibly visiting Nantucket, as well!

I wish you and your “Joe” lots of blessings during your time away from home. Getting to meet lots of new friends will be your consolation for missing late Spring on the island! I am sure your kitties will be awaiting your joyful return …

Hope to see you in Ohio…

your friend, Carol and her “Joe”

    • sbranch says:

Well, at least you’ve been here, and the beach in front of the Black Dog, tiny though it is, has been a center of boating excitement around here for a very long time, the ferry is right there, the schooners too . . . you had a very nice “island experience” in that little spot. You just have to come back someday and stay longer! Did you know Louisa May Alcott is buried in Sleep Hollow Cemetery on “Author’s Ridge?” I’ve always loved that name, Sleepy Hollow. Hope to see you in Ohio, Carol!

      • Carol Jolly says:

I intend to be there, Susan. I am excited to meet you, as well!

        Carol

Ps….can’t wait to travel back and see the grave of Ms. Alcott…and to visit my Nobska lighthouse, once more…

        Pss….just started reading A Fine Romance today…

        • sbranch says:

Her house is open to the public too . . . it’s wonderful, especially the little owl painting over her bedroom fireplace. See you soon!

  61. Barb Murphy says:

Spring is on the way. Your new book looks wonderful. And it’s Friday. Triple combo! Here’s to a great day and a fabulous weekend.

  62. Maria Embree says:

Your blog is delightful. Have a fun and safe trip.

  63. Natalie says:

Happy Early Birthday Susan! I received an email saying my book shipped and should arrive April 12 which happens to be my birthday too!!! What a fantastic present for me 🙂 I would love to have one of your watercolor brushes and bookmark–true treasures. Thanks to Joe for excellent giveaway idea! So sorry you aren’t stopping in Washington, DC on your book tour but I am going to try for Asheville, NC since family lives near there. Best to you on your birthday and the upcoming cross-country trip.

    • sbranch says:

That birthday, it’s going to be a good one this year! Give we get to meet in Asheville! Thank you so much Natalie!

      • Natalie says:

It’s here! Your book just arrived. Early birthday present…of course I won’t be able to wait until the 12th. Can’t wait to get off work so I can start reading. Thank you again!

  64. Pat W. says:

Susan, bought your book last fall but have saved it to read now with the anticipation of the new one arriving any day. (This was not easy to do . .) Can’t wait to hear the rest of your story! Thanks for sharing . .

  69. Donna Bradley says:

    Good morning Susan!
Yesterday was a red letter day for me! I went to get the mail and there in my mailbox was your beautiful new book! Oh Susan, it’s so lovely! I know it was a labor of love and I’ll treasure it, especially since it was signed by you! Thank you for giving your heart and soul in book form for all your girlfriends to LOVE! I hope you and Joe have a great book tour! Keep us updated on all your adventures along the way!
    Love from Texas,
    Donna

  70. Joan Lesmeister says:

Such a thrill yesterday afternoon, open, open, open, I waited an hr – I was busy hanging up my freshly washed lace curtains! I thought I could wait & sit down, with tea of course – I couldn’t – tore open the pkg! Then, I ironed the drapes, and the beautiful book cover was taunting me! Argghhh! Had to open to read everything but starting the 1st page! Tortured myself until American Idol ended & then read the 1st page! So far, I love it….I know I won’t be able to last much longer…truly wanted to save it for a special setting, sitting…too hard…I’m diving in after dinner! Congratulations, dear sweet Sue! XOXO

  71. Elizabeth G. says:

Thank you for sharing your life with us, Susan! I look forward every week (give or take) to the peek into Martha’s Vineyard and your exploits.

I would love to win a doodle bookmark! And of course, Isle of Dreams!

    See you in St. Charles!

  72. Barbara Kujawa says:

I have been a fan for along time. I never get tired of your blog and look forward to every post. I just got a notice my book is on the way to Virginia!!! I would love to get another one to give to my Granddaughter. It would be so exciting! One of my bucket list items is to visit Martha’s Vineyard. Also Happy Birthday!!

  73. Andrea Giesemann says:

    Dear Susan,

You are the best! You inspire me in so many ways! I would love to win one of your old brushes! And doodles — I would frame it! I’m a self taught artist/crafter and your blog and books uplift me.

  74. Elizabeth says:

My book arrived yesterday along with a bookmark! Thank you!

  75. Carolyn from Pittsburgh says:

I,m very late to the party. I’ve been reading old blogs to try to catch up. I thought I better read my first current blog in case there was a give a way. There is. I hope I’m not too late. I just got “A Fine Romance” two days ago from your shop on line. I’m trying to save it for my hip replacement recovery at the end of the month. It’s been 19 years since I was in England and I know you can take me back there in between physical therapy sessions. So to keep me out of my new book I’m watching you write it. Stickers and calendars have kept me happy for years. How did I not know there was a blog?

  76. Carol Le Blanc says:

    Hi Susan
I am writing to you from Ojai, Calfornia. It is one of our favorite places to visit. I am on the waiting list to see you at the Unlikely Story…I kept checking for the details and missed the sign up by a day or 2 and it was already sold out…good for you. I am so excited about The Fairy Girl and just know that when I arrive home from this trip I will find the books waiting for me❤️Hope to see you and Joe at one of your stops in New England❤️Love Carol❤️

    • sbranch says:

Oh, I didn’t know Unlikely Story was sold out! That’s a surprise. Thank you for telling me. I’m sorry to miss you there! Love Ojai, it must be wonderful this time of year!

  77. Faye W Meyers says:

I have all your books but have not read them!! It’s because I feel I have an unopened present! It cheers me up to think I will one day sit down to read them! Weird but true!
    Enjoy your travels~~

  78. Joyce J says:

You are sooo talented, Susan! Thank you for brightening my days with your beautiful drawings and stories!

  83. NANCY JO says:

    Hi Sue,
Got the book today. well I was about as surprised as you were!!! The Sat. night live crew. what!! ?? I can only read a few pages at a time because I don’t want the book to end. Thank you for writing and drawing.
    Nancy Jo

  84. Linda phillips says:

I have always admired water color/colored pencil artist and love and collect children’s books with water colors. oh happy day your work makes my heart sing! Thanks so much for sharing your talent and love! Linda P

  85. I’ve been trying really hard to tell myself, “Oh, it’s going to be quite a while til the new book comes out. Don’t worry about it right now.” Because otherwise every day when I go to get the mail, I sort of secretly think to myself (even though I know better!), Maybe it’ll come today! and it’s just a little sad when it doesn’t. But NOW it really could be any day and I can start being excited when I go to the mailbox. And for every day that it’s not there, it’s just one more day of excited “maybe tomorrow.” Can’t wait to go check the mail. 🙂

  86. Thanks you for this opportunity to be in the drawing. I love you and your work and feel as though we are besties. I can’t wait to meet you at ‘The Kings English” in Salt Lake City. Your books have enthralled me and your commentary on Downton Abby was SO perfect! Keep doing what you are doing please. You make so many people happy.

  87. It’s here, it’s here!! I’m so happy, it is just beautiful, and the quote on the back cover brings tears to my eyes, even though jeeze louise I live on the coast of Maine and the ocean and a lighthouse are just down the street – but you always seem to say what is in our heart of hearts… I have been revoltingly good this week, accomplishing lots of complicated and difficult tasks every darn day, and my reward is this very afternoon and many quiet hours of reading, Hodge the cat napping in a sun patch nearby, tea and snacks, and your book. Life is magnificent. I hope the same for you, always!

    • sbranch says:

Love “revoltingly good!” Happy rewards of the day! xoxo Thank you Sarah!

      • Just have to say that I’m in the middle of a slow second read, after reading it the first time too fast (though I tried to linger! honest!), and I will write more when I make some notes and gather my thoughts – but, for now, OH, such a satisfying story. Love reading about you finding your way, through self-trust, solitude, meditation, and sheer day-to-day-ness in your wee house: who am I, and what do I want most, in this life. I love how you made your list and carried it through, beautifully. Nature and fate rushed in to meet you, too, which is also beautiful, and affirming. You get not just one, but a huge constellation of gold stars, from this reader! Thank you for this wonderful book, and for your honesty and generosity in writing it. YOU are the lighthouse, on the back cover – showing the way. More soon.

        • sbranch says:

If you could hear and see me. The little squeaks, the shaking of the head, the laugh, the watery eyes. Thank you Sarah!

          • Finished my second reading! *SPOILER ALERT*, IF YOU HAVEN’T READ IT!
I was again weepy during your divorce and Pooh kitty… (Nooooooo!) then cheering for you, all along but especially when you were treating yourself to tea at the Ritz after delivering ‘Heart of the Home’ to LB, and again at the end of the book when you said “No, thanks” to Prince Charming/He Who Shall Not Be Named (Yessssss!). Love all your themes, throughout – making commitments to yourself, lovingly; keeping appointments with fate and destiny, even if you didn’t know you had made them until they happened; self-education through wonderful books; pursuing happiness however it best suits you; making the life you dream of, yourself; trusting your gifts, however small they seem at first. I loved you looking up at your old geranium painting, and saying “in a galaxy far, far away” because it made me think that ‘Fairy Tale Girl’ and ‘Isle of Dreams’ were kind of like Star Wars. Goofy but true? In the first three movies – Nooooo! evil afoot! dark days! no hero! bodies everywhere! And in the second three movies – Yesssss! the force is real! light and goodness prevail! hope! ;O)

Speaking of which, I saw an ad today for Mary Oliver’s forthcoming book of essays, and thought of you – it is called ‘Upstream’ because, she says: “Up, it’s the only direction worth pursuing.” Amen to that.

This comment is already too long. I will mention one more thing, though – I think so many people love you and your books because they see themselves in your experience, because you are so open and honest. Not an easy thing to be. I know I identify with what you write – I had a fiance who left me, I tried to make a home for myself and find my way, and did, then met the man I’ve been with for 24 years. And now I say THANK YOU to fate and to the fiance, because I wouldn’t trade the life I have now for anything. Overwhelming gratitude for the way things turned out. I see that in your books and it reinforces my own experience. Fairy tales are universal metaphors, after all, at the same time that they are very, very specific! That is the joy of your trilogy. THANK YOU.

And, hope your birthday was cozy and wonderful…

  88. Kendra says:

Oh pick me, pick me !!! I want to read your new book sooooo badly.

  89. Cindy Rhodes says:

    Hello, Susan!
I enjoy your blog so very much! It has cheered me when work was
terribly stressful and through the illness of a family member.
Loved your book, A Fine Romance, and enjoying, Fairy Tale Girl.
Looking forward to Isle of Dreams!
Hope to see you in Georgia or North Carolina during your book tour!

    Cindy Rhodes

  90. pat addison (cave junction, OR) says:

Good morning Susan, big hello girlfriends. well our obnoxious neighbor is going to be getting lots and lots of nasty fan mail from the county… he is well known in nearly section of the county administration building from county planning to building safety to DEQ ( dept. of environmental quality) to law enforcement. he has violations stretching the range and width of the county building codes, safety codes and lets just say a few phone calls from some pretty tired and fed up neighbors did the trick and he will be hearing from them all very soon. now I have a question for anyone who lived in Southern California in the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s ….. does anyone remember a place up in Lake Arrowhead called Santa’s Village?? there was also a Santa’s Village in the Santa Cruz mountains that was closed long time ago. well the Santa’s Village up at Lake Arrowhead has reopened, it reopened Memorial weekend of 2015and yes it has a lot of the original buildings plus a lot of new rides and features for the family. its called Santa’s Sky Park with the village incorporated into the theme park. it now features mountain bike riding, zip lines and a wedding chapel and reception area and of course Mrs. Claus’s kitchen, and the Witch’s bakery and Santa’s workshop and some of the old rides like the Cinderella’s pumpkin coach and many others, just a thought. I think it is wonderful that someone bought the old place up and revamped it and is open for business. I remember the old village from my childhood, took my kids there, and now they can take their kids there and remember. may just have to go back there and see it all again for myself and see if Mrs. Claus’s hot chocolate is just as I remember it… heavenly. I remember the brownies from the bakery and the gingerbread from the Gingerbread house. wonder if that is still as good as ever??? may go see for myself. off to go check on the peeps and chickens, just had to let you know something old and wonderful came back and better than ever. have a great day…… hugs….. 🙂

    • sbranch says:

I have pictures of me and my brothers and sisters up there at Santa’s Village in the snow . . . yes! It was a wonderful place!

    • Lisa Jorgensen says:

I remember Santa’s Village very well, went there many times as a child in the early sixties. It created many magical memories!! I have pictures of my sister and I in our Santa’s village tee shirts!! So happy to hear it is open again, but probably wouldn’t be the same as it was back then.

      • sbranch says:

Not quite! We are so much taller now!

        • pat addison (cave junction, OR) says:

we may be taller but the memories linger. I can remember being chased by the little goats in the petting area, but they were so much to chase as well. I remember the pumpkin coach ride, and the bumble bee monorail, that was fun. I am just glad it is back and better than ever. it looks to have more for the families to do. whatever, its and its here to stay!!! 🙂

  91. mari1017 says:

I just had to stop my Spring cleaning and say how just much I love your new book! I did tweet that it arrived yesterday, and I’ve now had time to savor the opening and glance at the pictures. The first quote I read was on the back cover, and that set the tone for a wonderful read! You outdid yourself, Susan. Maybe because I’m partial to the Cape and MV or maybe because I’ve been along for just about all your journey, but this truly is your most wonderful book. Thank you from my heart ♥ Happy traveling…hope you tweet your adventures! Happy Spring!!!

YAY Susan! It’s funny: I am not your typical girlfriend I don’t believe and I could list all the reasons why…BUT I am your typical girlfriend in the sense there is a portion of my heart and soul dedicated to you, your art and blog always. It is where I can escape back to reality and what really matters in life. I will always be so grateful I have you to thank for the grounding you provide me with. I am also grateful my soul allows this space to exist! Cannot wait for the next book!!!!!!! xo

  93. Janet in Pittsburgh, PA says:

You have the most wonderful give-a-ways. I already ordered a book, but if I win, I will share one with my best friend/cousin, Michelle. We will be seeing you in Hudson, OH, in May. I cannot wait! Thanks for everything you do for all the girlfriends! : )

I cannot wait for my copy to arrive! And my dear bestie has one on its way as her happy birthday surprise from me 🙂 sending out the little card you had on your site gave me double the gift-sending pleasure, just as I hope it gives her double the mail-receiving fun! I would so wish to see you on your great Tour of Bookstores but I don’t think it will work out due to time and distance (I’m smack in the middle of fly over country out here on the prairie) but I will be there in spirit. Enjoy seeing the Land and its wonderful people!

    Hi Susan,

If you have an Amazon, you can get it. Otherwise, you can get it from us, but shipping is expensive I think. Sheri or Kellee can help you figure that out ~ [email protected]/~susanbs3/susanbranch/ I didn’t know you had a new baby Willemien! I am so happy he is better! 🌷 I love forget-me-nots! Have a wonderful day!

    Dear Susan,

Dear Susan, I have loved your books and your artwork and your joie de vivre for so very long. I think after all these years, through some sort of osmosis, I’m feeling brave enough to venture into the art journaling world. This is big for me. I so appreciate art but have never felt I could create it. Well, I’m taking baby steps and am having fun with it (and learning to shush that self-critical voice). And I’ve been so enjoying the new-to-me world of art supplies so I think Joe’s idea of including your old paint brushes in the give-away is brilliant. I hope to see you on your book tour at Vroman’s!

That voice is truly a pain, I know, I’ve been trying to step on mine all my life, so just keep fighting it, and then do exactly what you want to! For years I would see my paint brushes and art things and forget for a moment and think, who could those belong to, and then remember, oh yeah, me! Good luck with it, I’m proud of you for trying! Life is so very short. xoxo Hope to see you at Vroman’s!
