LET’S DO OUR DRAWING TODAY

Well, there is SO much going on around here ~ I thought I better do our drawing today! Strike while the iron is hot! But first, let’s see, let’s go hang out in 1928 for a while . . . MUSICA!

toast girlfriends winter word

I’ve almost finished writing us a new WILLARD!  It will start going out on Tuesday morning and I hope you will love it! Is everyone is signed up? If not, and you’d like my newsletter delivered to your email box, just go HERE and sign up. And while you’re at it, sign up your mom and your sister too, and your kitty movesBFF, because it’s going to be chock full of good and fun stuff.  I’m also updating the blog on Tuesday! Very exciting! Love it when everything happens at once! Between the blog and Willard, us packing to go away on our two-month Book Tour, and the constant Kitty Kissing, there is A LOT going on . . . including, in this new Willard, more Giveaways, and even a Grand Prize Giveaway. Oh yeah. We’re doin’ it up big.🎉pink-flowers

So I thought I better step in now and announce the winners of the SIX books, with paintbrushes and bookmarks . . . so I can get them in the mail to the Lucky Winners on Monday and not get everything all mixed up with Tuesday! Hate it when that happens! Can’t believe how many people we have entered in this drawing. Wild eh, and what fun! Have you read any of the comments? Only the nicest people in the world! 💏 That’s all. You really don’t know how often you make me cry! Sometimes I can’t even answer because I don’t know what to say! That’s how nice you are.

IMG_7158

So, just a little reminder . . . our six winners will get a personalized copy of my new book, Martha’s Vineyard, Isle of Dreams, that one  up there, PLUS

IMG_7033

Each book will come with one of the worn-out paintbrushes I used to paint the watercolors in the new book AND these messy bits made into bookmarks from the blotters where I test colors and try to figure out what is wrong when my pen starts acting up. Little bits of book DNA from the construction site.from me to you with loveBut before I announce the winners, I thought you might enjoy a bit of Morning Science. For any of you with a Wisteria, this may be old news, but I find it endlessly fascinating, what a Wisteria does in the springtime, so I thought I’d show you one of my favorite harbingers of spring.🌞

IMG_7645

You know what a wisteria looks like in bloom, right?  And the smell? Floral heaven. Like the inside of a flower store ~ Ours were planted a long time ago, by the woman who owned our house from 1940 to 1980, the very much appreciated Mrs. Bowditch. They hang on an arbor over the kitchen-porch side of our house and the fragrance goes up through the second story windows (where I am taking this photo) and into the bedrooms, thank you very much.💛

IMG_7649They make May . . . in May the Island air smells like ocean mixed with lilac and wisteria.

IMG_7185

Here’s how our wisteria looks right now, not quite as lovely, despite the fabulous blue sky . . . but see all those dangling bean-like things? That’s what I wanted to show you.

IMG_7184

Here they are up-close. They are fuzzy like pussy willows.Inlovewithnature

IMG_7180

They drop in the spring in the first days of warmth from the sun ~ the porch and the driveway are covered in them. They make the most delightful cracking noise when you step on them because they are very hard. I go out of my way to step on as many as I possibly can. From what I saw on the driveway this morning, I’m about to be in crunch heaven.

IMG_7181They don’t really drop actually, they kind of split apart and explode . . .

IMG_7186The pods hit our windows, we can hear it happening, little ticks against the glass . . . A few of them get all they way across the driveway onto the lawn . . . they really do explode. We think it might be from happiness.happy?

IMG_7188

The daffodils watch intently, as you can see.  And see the little black dots on the driveway around them . . .?

IMG_7182The by-product! Free wisteria seeds!  Isn’t that fabulous?miracles

                                                   It’s our springtime miracle!Fairy2

And you might wonder, but is there anything actually blooming in your yard now? And I would have to say, Oh, yes there is!IMG_7138

Our Magnolia is in bloom.

spring!

Alright, that’s the end of Morning Science for today 🌷 . . . so here we go dear ones, I do so hope you win!!!!! But if you don’t, remember, there will be more chances in Willard, more chances in the next post, and lots of fun surprises coming. It’s spring, I have a new book, we’re going for a long ride, hill and dale across the country to meet all our Girlfriends, and we’re here to

celebrate!So here we go!

Vanna . . . darling . . . climb up there and dive into the vat won’t you? (Remember when it was only a basket she had to draw from? Now it’s a vat!  Filled with teeny weeny slips of paper, each with a tiny name on it!  So exciting! We are gaining Girlfriends, Girlfriends!)

THE WINNERS of the SIX BOOKS AND ETC. ARE:

I hate this part. Up till now everyone is a winner, as well it should be, since that is the bottom-line truth, but now all of a sudden, it’s narrowed down considerably. I always say this when Vanna is diving into the vat, and I always feel it. Oh well. Must. do. my. job. She’s UP!!! Handful of names are flapping in the wind.  Here we go . . .

Happiness abounds, joy bells ring, honking horns dinning, awesomeness reigns for:

Diane P. from Northern California

Rachael Anna

Kenna Morris!

I’ll send you each an email and you can write me back with your address and who you would like the book inscribed to . . . you, or perhaps you have someone else in mind! I will love to do it, and Joe will get them in the mail to you on Monday (or as soon as I hear back from you). We have our first French Person winner! How exciting!🌎We are the world, Girlfriends! 💞

Off I go, but I’ll be back so soon it’s almost ridiculous. Please don’t get sick of me!  Have a wonderful day, a wonderful weekend, breathe in some of that fresh spring air and know you are loved.  XOXO

I just finished combing thru Williard and there just aren’t enough words to express the happiness I get when I receive it in my inbox. Each issue of Williard is like visiting with a dear, dear friend. Enjoy your upcoming trip and I hope to see you in Memphis in June!

  2. Janet B says:

Your newsletter fluttered into my inbox like the first sweet breath of spring – and then to see those gorgeous images of the sunrise transforming your kitchen…just beautiful! They took me back to the kitchen of my childhood, where I would sit on the radiator on chilly mornings while Mom made Cream of Wheat. Thanks so much for that moment 🙂 !

  3. Rachel Angel says:

your book on England was enchanting to the point i would forget i was in wisconsin

  4. Jennifer Heft says:

I found the tiny comment section. Hooray!!!

  5. Tracy says:

I love your sparkly blog posts And your amazing books:) You are an inspiration. Have a wonderful book tour and trip to England!

  6. I was very disappointed in your book “A Fine Romance.” No details about your courtship with Joe. Also what happened to your adorable house in the woods?
Would like to have heard about your moving to your current home.

The tour of Britain could have been another book….not in conjunction with “A Fine Romance”.

  7. Margie Orr says:

Have a great book signing trip. Love Isle of Dreams, I laughed and cried and feel homesick for New England. I have see to hanging my oldest son’s diapers on the line in Maine and they froze immediately, but at the end of the day they were soft and fresh. Thanks Susan for all your wonderful and artistically made books…I have them all I think. I also used to get Willards in the mail many years ago….and I used to think of you and wondered what happened…now I know!

  8. Carmen says:

Love your website & your products.
    It always makes me smile…

  9. Judy D. says:

Brightens my day to see your blog. Enjoyed the Willard this morning. Love the new fabrics. So sad you aren’t heading down to San Diego with a book signing. My sweet daughter-in-law lives near Madison. Will try and get her there. Happy Travels. xoxo

  10. Loren M. says:

    Happy Spring, and safe travels!

  11. Carmen says:

Love your website & your products.
    It always makes me smile…
    Your artwork, etc is beautiful!

  12. I wrote articles on quilts (makers, festival, history) many years ago for a local newspaper in Washington State. I became fascinated with quilting during that time, but only as an observer of fine crafting.

  13. Jennifer says:

I am going to Spoonflower to purchase some of those adorable SB fabrics!

  14. Michele M. says:

Oh Susan! I CANNOT WAIT to not only make my own fabric but to get some of yours! Wondering if you will be doing a black and white gingham of sorts?? (hint hint teehee!) What a great idea! The price: sometimes it’s just worth having what makes you happy in life and if we get to look at what we made with the “special” fabric everyday?? Worth it!!! Happy Spring!!

  15. Pam says:

Can’t wait for the new book. I hope they have a box set at Costco,at Xmas time. It would make the perfect Xmas gift! love the new fabric too. i might have to make a quilt.

  16. Gail Russ says:

Well now I know how long I’ve been a fan of yours: 30 years! I have your very first book on my bookshelf here by the dining room table (along with so many of your other books) and I still look at and use all of them. I’m loving your trilogy and am looking forward to the third one. AND the updated version of your first book! Thanks for all the joy for all these years. You deserve such happiness, Susan! Happy belated birthday and many, many returns of the day.

  17. Gail Rose says:

Oh dear , 17 books I have and now maybe a quilt.!!! Too much to hope for. ?
    Tell Joe hi for me.

  18. Kathiellen says:

    Good Morning Susan!
I was so happy to get your new Willard this morning! Anything that you write, draw, paint, create…makes me happy! Your music is the music that I listen to every day and I devour it! I don’t believe that I could exist without music. Thank you for all that you do to make so many people smile! I am about a third of the way through reading Martha’s Vinyard, Isle of Dreams and I just do not want it to end! I can identify so much of what you have gone through and overcome that it gives me goosebumps. It all has a happy ending though!😊 I feel so bad for you having to leave your beloved kitties 😢. In June we will have to board our Thomasina for 11 days while we go on a fishing trip, and I am feeling very sad about leaving her! She is between 11 & 12 years old. She showed up on my doorstep on a bitterly cold November day in 2009, the day after my 9 year old Rosie-Kat died. She was so afraid! If she saw any movement she would take off! I put food and water out for her every day and she eventually moved in under my front porch. Still….she would run if I would try an approach her. She was beautiful…a buff colored plump cat, who appeared to be about 2 years old. I believe that she was ” left behind” by someone. It took 6 months to gain her trust and let me pet her and another month for her to venture into my front door when I would leave it open for her. One day when she came into the house, I closed the door and she has been with me for 7 years now. The vet said that she was between 3 & 5 years old at that time and was spayed. I named her: H.R.H Thomasina Moonbeam McDuhy, Duchess of Penny Lane…..after Thomasina and Mary McDuhy from the Disney movie: Thomasina ❤️ She is a Big Love!!!
Have a safe & wonderful trip, Susan! All my best, Kathie

  19. Carla says:

So many new adventures coming your way! Such fun and the best way to stave off “fuzzy” brain. I will be delighted to come along through your books.

  20. Elizabeth Roderick says:

Thank you for this lovely Willard…always good to catch up. I do love your drawings. My mother was a fantastic artist and I wish I had that talent. Your quotes and pictures brighten my day!

  21. Dawn Reed says:

I enjoy you and Joe so much! You have got such talent! Thank you from the bottom of my heart :)! I Love Willard!

  22. Noreen Krebs says:

Oh your Willard and blog has just made my day!! I love the quilt! Mine is fraying and finally falling apart. You can see through it when I whip it up in the air when making my bed! There is something so loving and comforting about a quilt! Nothing like it!

  23. Holly Schelin says:

Seriously…wisteria seeds?!! I am so in!

  24. Kathy Nagel says:

Sue, I just want to thank you (and God) for the influence you have had in my life – your spirit encouraged me in embracing my own whimsical authentic self and my life is so rich because of it!! I have been reading every recipe, your quotes and sense – satient description of seasonal splendor for about 29 years now! And being a kindred optimist – I have just purchased enough Of your original”DAYS” books to last until I’m 99. I already am on gratitude journal/diary #18. I wish you could be a real life girlfriend with me and my BFF Linda, but we are happy as clams in our fantasy friendship together! We called each other every night as we read “Isle of dreams” to double our enjoyment of your adventures!! (We are the red haired girlfriends that started reading “A Fine Romance” together on the patio with champagne and tea! 😉 Love you “girlfriend”. Kathy N

    • sbranch says:

Don’t think I could ever forget you two. Because that would not be possible. Any one who has told her life story in my DAYS books is always going to be remembered, that photo of you with the stack of them sealed the deal forever. See you and Linda at Hudson, can’t wait!!

  25. Pat W says:

Happy Birthday! Your art and books are sooooooooo unique and wonderful. Looking forward to reading the next trilogy….as I am ever the optimist.

    Cheers,

    Pat

  26. Helen Altman Stillwell says:

Never stop doing what you do. The world needs more and more of your spirit and appreciation of the beautiful things and people everywhere. it’s the fresh air of life.

  27. Susan says:

Just finished reading your Willard, enjoyed it very much. I certainly understand why they don’t come in the mail any longer but I really cherish the ones that did. It truly was like getting a present!

  28. Susan, your words are a fresh spring breeze blowing across the creek, ruffling the daffodils, and sending the sheets on the line in a slow dance of delight.

  29. Nancy A. says:

You are in such a good place in your life. I can feel you bubbling over in your posts. Fun to read. 😊❤️

  33. Bridget says:

You are a breath of fresh air Ms. Susan! My sister has been collecting your cookbooks for what seems like forever! Once shared with me (I am the baby sister) hooked me in as well!

  37. Barbara says:

It just occurred to me, having logged in for the second time in as many days, that you and your readers see the world in the same way.
This struck me due to those lovely restorative (emotionally speaking) photos of the morning light in your kitchen. I have a feeling each of us stops in her tracks with delight whenever we are provided with such a sight.
Thank you for sharing with all of us.

  38. Jean Carrington says:

Susan, I am so glad to have found you years ago I have many of your books and have enjoyed them all. I am constantly recommending you to my friends, relatives and acquaintances.

  39. Denise says:

From one elf to another (what wonderful advice from your dad!), it is a pity about fabric designs. I am always searching for a fabric I have discovered that is no longer available. I am thrilled your lovely designs will be available on Spoonflower; I have ordered fabric from them before and they offer a great service and product! I am very excited and want to thank you for making Heart of the Home available again! Thank you also for sharing your art, photos and on point quotes as all are uplifting! Looking forward to your travels, most happy to be tagging along!

  40. Judianni says:

Dear Susan…I want to be you!!! Well, not really YOU, but me like you♥️ This is the first time I’ve left a comment, but I’ve been an avid fan for many (we won’t say how very many!) years. Your precious books have been in my home forever. Your adorable pictures and precious words touch my heart. I’m thrilled for you and you successes…you’ve worked so hard and you’ve earned and deserve them! CONGRATULATIONS ON THE MOVIE!

  41. Georgia in Kona says:

    Dear Susan.
Oh I can’t thank you enough for opening my eyes to the beauty that I was so blinded to. Your books, story, inspiration, quotes, I know will be in my heart for ever.
My life hasn’t been a fairy tale but it’s been quit a ride.
I cried at the end of “Isle of Dreams” finishing it yesterday. My daughter comforted me & somehow she understood.
Again I get to see you in Pasadena & I’m thrilled. Hope I don’t cry.
    Have a safe trip.
    Hugs & Aloha,
    Georgia

  42. Joyce Welch says:

I love your website. Thank you, so much, for sharing your life with us. I have enjoyed all three of your last books. Am looking forward to reading about your next trip to England. Wish I could sneak on board with you. I share some of your likes. Have always collected Beatrix Potter figurines, love every thing about The British Isles, wish I could have lived in New England, have always had Kitties( now have two- Abby and Arnold, and collect Antiques. Thanks again and enjoy your trip to England and Scotland. Oh, also was born in California but, still live here.

  43. Janie of Flagstaff says:

Love, love, loved Martha’s Vineyard – Isle of Dreams. What a wonderful story. There is just something about reading your books that is so cozy and comfortable – like an old shoe. It was over much too fast!

  44. Carmen J. says:

I have so enjoyed you books and look forward to the most recent Isle of Dreams. Thank you, I feel like I am there with you as I read every page.

I’ve loved the fun, charming and delightful products you miraculously keep creating!! Thank you for the music! Puts me in a dreamy mood. Also thanks for the fabric website. And I always enjoy the kitties:x) .

  51. Susan says:

After reading Martha’s Vineyard, Isle of Dreams I went back and re-read Heart of the Home (& Vineyard Seasons) as I imagine so many of us have and today I made the Potato Skins which I never have done before. They rank the S word for food–Scrumptious! Scrumptious is my go to word for super delicious food and since we have to eat often and it’s possible to have food be scrumptious I think every bite should always be so! These are so 80s but better than any I’ve ever had in a restaurant and a super fun flashback to everything old is new again as I don’t see them on menus much anymore, if at all. Love your sauce too Susan! Thanks again for being you!

  52. Sandy says:

    LOVE Wisteria!!

  53. Kay Lundgren says:

Do you need someone to go with you as you cross the pond, to sharpen your pencils, carry your bags, give you personal reader critics; if so I am that someone? Good luck on your book tour and be safe.

  72. Nancy Halsema says:

I have been so eager to write and say a warm and loving Thank You! I feel I found you by Providence alone. You see I went to the bookstore to get materials to help me plan our trip to Great Britain in Spring of 2017 (for our 50th wedding anniversary – I was a CHILD bride!) I actually had an arm full when I looked up and saw a section on true travel experiences and there was your book “A Fine Romance”! Magic Happened! My heart goes pitter pat just thinking of the first opening into your own adventure. I was lost, but now I am found. An avid reader all of my life I quickly realized I would much prefer HillTop & the Hampshire countryside to Big Ben. I am using it as my inspiration for the whole trip and it has me scurrying to find all of the other books you have recommended from Elizabeth to Vita. A National Trust pass will be a “must have” as I am becoming obsessed with English gardens & castles. I can’t wait to make reservations for a room in Hawkshead and will look forward to my first Pear Cider upon landing. I adore your writing style and your gorgeous art. I love the feel of the page and the darling red bookmark. Finding you was Serendipitious but now you are my your friend for life. I will see you in nearby Woodstock, GA on June 25th and look forward to owning your other books and whatever else you offer too. I’ve signed up for Willard, looked and enjoyed your website from edge to edge. Where have you been all my life (other than not yet born). What can I say, I’m a fan!

    • sbranch says:

Just reading your words I know you are going to have the BEST time!!! I’m already vicariously along for the ride! See you in Woodstock, Nancy!

  73. I’m enjoying the new book. We have some things in common, although at different times in our lives. Who would have guessed? I’m 61, single, and just moved from California to North Carolina, where life is really different! I’m waiting to see what comes of my dreams! I started a blog with the subtitle: California Girl Moves to the South. I’m having fun with it.

  74. Donna Kathryn says:

Hi Susan ! I love your work ! It is always a delight to visit your blog !
So happy for your latest project … Can’t wait to read it cover to cover !

    Thank you,

What a fun Willard read today. Your writings are always such a treat. Happy belated birthday!

  80. Nancy Perry says:

    Dear Susan,
Reading your blogs and Willards are such a joy to me. It’s like sitting in a comfy chair and having a cup of tea by the fire (or sitting under a tree in springtime). You inspire with your enthusiasm and creativity. After I read your posts, I just want to go and paint something!
I have been savoring your new book and I know I will be sad when it is done.
Cheers to you! And Happy Belated Birthday!

We are sitting in line right now, watching sunset, behind ferryboat, getting ready to cross the water to home, and I have to agree, what a beautiful day. I’ll blow some of it north! Thank you Deb!

  83. Kim Irey says:

Susan, I believe a movie or maybe a TV series would be simply fantastic! Of course, if it WERE 1982 I would definitely vote for Diane Keaton too! Enjoy your adventure!

  84. Marie Fell says:

    Hi, Susan!
What a lovely surprise to find your latest Willard in my email today! First, you solved the name of the mystery tree by our garage in our recently purchased home! It is a wisteria! I absolutely couldn’t figure that one out. Also, I was soooo happy that you brought up the topic of who would play you; Susan Branch, the main character in a tv series or movie. And of course, I’m still keeping my fingers crossed for the tv series, as that would be great for all of us Gilmore Girls’ fans. I can totally see it! Zooey Deschanel, of course!
And, as I’m reading chapter eight of “Martha’s Vineyard” today, you answered the question, “Where does Susan get all of her quotations, for goodness sakes?” Now we all know. How fortunate you were to live in Agnes’ house, don’t you think? It might have been tiny, but that house gave you lots of inspiration.
Finally, I have suggested to my friends that when they read Chapter Four, they need to find a quiet spot where there are no interruptions! It was such a good read, and again, may I suggest that a movie would not do justice to your life’s story?
Looking forward to seeing you in Hudson, Ohio, on May 5th and I can’t give enough praise to you for writing such a wonderful book. It’s turning out to be rather inspirational for me in many ways, and I thank you for that! Marie from Avon Lake

    Susan,
My girlfriend and I are SO excited about your book signing tour! Since we live down here in Texas, we don’t have too many chances to make the New England get-togethers. We will meet you in Austin in June girlfriend! I’m also SO excited about the fabric line. My sister and I and several friends are all getting into quilting. Love it!! You are an inspiration to me. Thanks for sharing you life and art!!

Just got my Willard today so adding a comment will not get me in the drawing as it already has happened.
Did receive my Martha’s Vineyard Isle of Dreams today and cannot wait to start reading, right after dinner. Nothing good enough on TV to keep me from the book!

    Susan,
I thought I had put my sewing machine away but when I see your material out it comes! I love to sew and I love your prints! I tried a quilt once but it fell apart. Maybe I will have to give it another try. I am encouraged by your words! Thank you many times!

  100. Suzanne Lee says:

Loved the book!!!! Stretched it out as many nights as I could and read many parts twice. I was pretty nervous about you going with Cliff the last time even though I knew how things ended. I made the wonderful Jiffy cornbread mix pancakes and they are a keeper. Who da thunk it! Can’t wait for my trips in the suitcase. So glad we have you!
