Good Morning . . .MUSICA We are, right now, in the midst of a beautiful inspiring 
snowstorm here on Martha’s Vineyard, delightfully cut off from the real world, not just any storm, they’re calling it a blizzard. Sometimes, I have to say, working at home has its 
drawbacks. You forget to get out of your jammies (until someone drops in, then you think, OMG, L👀k at me!), you lay out your newly designed calendar pages all across the living room floor (generally making a mess wherever you go), you stand staring into the fridge and then eat it all ~ so excited about something you’re painting, that you just leave the open extra-crunchy peanut butter jar and the sourdough toast crumbs on the counter and run back to the studio ~ which means your house gets a little disgusting to match your darling self in jammies and shawl, BUT, on a day like today, I take it all back, I’m grateful because it is heaven to 
be cozy at home, listening to the crackling fire, smelling the smoke, in my jammies, warm in my plaid shawl from Scotland, laying out my calendar pages, eating everything in the fridge, drinking tea with honey and milk … and feeling pretty sure (and safe), that in the pouring snow, no one will stop by! Taking deep breaths, and wishing I could slow down time . . . I love winter, everything so much easier now, than in the summer when the windows are open and the birds are singing and all I want to do is run out and play!
Right now, it’s just counting my blessings, trying to make something out of nothing, blank piece of paper in front of me, never knowing for sure what I am doing, but trying hard to do it, snow falling outside the windows, squirrels hanging from the bird feeders, purring noises coming from my art table . . . the clock ticking on the mantle . . .saying hello to you here and on Twitter (you can go there and just look, you don’t have to join, just in cases😘), then knitting and TV and bed and then do it all over again . . .
This is the view from my studio window right now . . . snow pouring down, spirals flying off the barn, piling up at the tops of the picket fence, making snow flowers in the tree branches . . . 
I walk through my sleepy house to go to my Studio in the morning, as I have for so many years, the old floors creak here and there, muffled noises of snowplow come from outside, and I am overwhelmed for the moment, so grateful that I got to grow up and meet Joe and move here, to this old house I adore so much ~ a house that’s more like a parent, protective and safe, like a mom or a dad. 💖 So cozy, it’s hard to tear myself out of bed in the morning ~ I stay a while and listen to the house and the wind.
There’s my honey, a man and his castle, the barn. He was up early, “It’s snowing” he yelled as he ran out the door! The man loves to shovel snow. Don’t ask me why, he just does. Another blessing to be added to my very long list.
I do my part . . .
We kept a few lights in the kitchen ~ along with candles and the flames in the fireplace, they make a perfect cheery contrast to darker shorter days . . .
The lights are still on our kitchen porch too, we keep them year round, they looked good on the summer night of Joe’s birthday too . . .
This place is the perfect place for dreaming . . . and I’m definitely dressed to go dreaming . . . and no, I don’t mind if you come along…🎵🎶
I thought you’d like to see the photo the Sisters sent from the Holy Nativity Convent . . . Isn’t this just darling? This should be their Christmas card next year! Pure love. They have Hygge totally under control! Thank you all for your support of the Sisters ~ so many of you responded to that post by ordering candles and clocks and all the other wonderful things the sisters make… they are ecstatic, you’ve made their day/year, and filled those 17 little stockings with peace and good will. I just have to say, for the upty-ninth time, I love us!
I love him too. My kitty. Now when he rubs his head on me, I rub my head on him. We are simpatico together. I get him, he gets me, and all is well in la-la-land.
So here I am, painting away for the next calendar, thinking to myself, as I watercolor my letters to the tune of the ticking clock, “What will they like? What can I give them . . .” meaning you, and hoping I guess right . . . I do dream it . . .
Oh, and I was thinking, maybe I should make my own mugs? I mean other people have done it, I ought to be able to figure it out. So, for starters, I made a paper one. Just fooling around . . . but isn’t it cute?
As you know, my boy Jack hangs out in the Studio with me, sometimes asleep, but other times he’s going after something . . . like my new Scottish plaid heart (sent to me by Elizabeth) which was hanging on my “fridge.” This is his “you caught me” face. See the pillow on top of the fridge? It didn’t used to look like Jack, but I blacked in the nose and mustache with a black marker and now it does! Life and all it’s little bits and pieces, ahhhhh.
I do have to get to work though, we leave for California at the end of next month, I’ll be meeting (in person) the screenwriter who is still hard at work on the script for our (not-
going-to-happen-but-still-a-fun-thought-anyway 😜) movie or series or whatever it will be. It was just this time last year when I first heard someone might want to make a movie from my trilogy of books, and so we’re going to meet under the HOLLYWOOD sign when Joe and I get out to California ~ her idea! A place I’ve never been! So, how fun is that? And also, that book signing I mentioned? It is for sure going to be on March 18th. I don’t know the exact time yet, but 
I’m assuming it’ll be in the afternoon ~ at the Apple Farm in San Luis Obispo, CA. Did I hear someone mention road trip???? I hope so! Lots of wonderful EVERYTHING in the SLO-town area in March, Spring! Ocean, sunshine🌞, and beach restaurants, cute downtown shopping, antique stores, nearby towns filled with charm, wineries, farmstands and good restaurants . . . on and on. Put the Beach Boys Kokomo in your MUSICA, start learning the words, sing along in your car and and come on down (or over, or up)! Until then, dear friends . . . Enjoy! So good to hear from you today. I just finished reading “Isle of Dreams”. Loved, loved, loved it. It spoke to me in that I’m still finding my purpose in life and I was inspired by your journey. I loved knowing that Laura Ingalls Wilder wrote Little House on the Prairie when she was 65 years old. I’m not too old!!! I have to admit that I was disappointed that the book did not contain more of your courtship and love story with Joe. Maybe another book?Blessings, dear Sue.
No one is too old to make a difference. The littlest things, in this crazy world, matter. After Joe and I met, we got along so well, we were so happy, it has seemed to me a book of happy happy happy happy would get very boring after a while! Need him to leave me or something, a bit of ups and downs, but that wasn’t really how it was. I think better would be a book about our house. We’ve lived here since 1989 and if I wrote about the house, just naturally, Joe would be there . . . our house has had more ups and downs than Joe and I have!!
Yes! A book about your house. I have piles of journals about our “old house”, and I loved what you said about it being a parent to you. We were so careful to keep as much as possible, even painting around where the original family measured their kids every year. The new owners have done the same!! “Our” house is so happy loving people bought her.

Make mugs, tons of mugs! Mugs of Jack, Joe, You, your House in all seasons (hey that’s an automatic set of 4), mugs of the path you walk on, all kinds of memory mugs and people will buy them. I know I want a set of four of the seasons of your home! Make Guest Books. I’ve been keeping a Guest Book in this home since 1995. We bought the home in 1992 and by 1995, I was keeping a guest book from friends and relatives from all over the world. I dearly love this book and love looking at all the handwritten signatures and little notes people scribble on the lines.
Guest books are wonderful, kind of like autograph books!

Heh, have you heard what happened to the Hollywood sign on the hill? Maybe someone will fix it soon however…or maybe the new spelling will hang in there? Have a fun trip…we have taken a couple trips (business ones that I and daughter too once, tagged along with hubby)…to SLO!!
Yes, I did hear, but I think it’s probably already fixed. That old sign is too loved to leave it for long!
The news channel said {while reporting on the Hollywood sign} that it is not easy to access the sign, very rugged terrain and quite a way’s from the top of that mountain. Susan I do hope you will make your own cup’s I would buy everyone you make. Please make them out of bone china and reasonably priced so all of us Girlfriends can get them.

Oh, please DO make your own mugs! That would make me happy. Also, many years ago I bought one of your baby books for my youngest daughter, and she’s now expecting twins! Her due date is when you’ll be at your book signing in Cali, although since she’s so very tiny herself (only 4’10” at age 23) we’re expecting them much sooner. Maybe she’ll choose SB baby books for the sweet girls she and her husband are expecting! Enjoy the Cali sunshine. I’ll be busy enjoying my first grands 🙂

I have been reading some of your older posts! I have never heard anyone else say anything about Mary and Tom getting together! (of course it is a mute point now) Except Me. !! Crrazy ! I love to read every blog and post on Twitter and Facebook but most of all I’m in love with the things that make people feel happy (Hygge as the Scandinavians say) your posts do this for me, all the pictures of your home and most of all the Snow and Jacks pics. I love the snowy pictures of the scenery and birds outside. Stay tucked up and enjoy every minute. I spent last night drinking fizz with the hubby and listening to old vinyl records, it was bliss… and I love my new present of a record player. I totally understand the cozy warm safe feeling of a home with a fireplace going and snow falling outside! The one thing we always loved to do was make snow ice cream from the fresh snow that fell on our back porch. So easy and so delicious in jammies by the cozy fire too!!

Stay warm Sue. They are forecasting cold weather and snow here later this week. At the moment we just have heavy rain. I’m enjoying myself sorting out some cross stitch patterns I want to make for Christmas cards this year. I try to stitch one a month although it doesn’t always go to plan.

Here in NW New Jersey we only got a dusting but the temp this morning was 8 degrees! BRRR! I put seed out for my feathered friends before the sun came up.
I also have a bad (?) habit of hanging out in my jammies a bit too long on winter weekends and would be mortified if company stopped in….but they’re so comfortable!
I love the paper mug you made — it’s perfect! (I would buy it!) This reminds me of the children’s book Grandma’s Promise by Elaine Moore; the little girl is staying at Grandma’s house and the power goes out so they cuddle up in front of the wood stove and Grandma makes hot chocolate. I love the mugs the illustrator created and have wished that I could find one just like it! Unlike you; I wouldn’t have a clue about how to have it made.
I hope things eventually move forward for a SB movie! How fun! Who would you want to play you and Joe?
I love when you share pictures of Jack. I got a new kitty the week before Thanksgiving and named her Annie although I think I should have named her “skitters” because that’s what she does — skitters here and skitters there.
She is very sweet and loves to sleep on my lap in the evenings. Are you thinking of getting Jack a companion? I’m so sorry to hear about Girl. I lost my beloved Tinkerbelle in July after 17 precious years. You never replace a kitty but make room in your heart for another one.

I could do it in a minute, but I don’t think Jack wants a friend in the house, I really don’t! Girl didn’t want one, but I didn’t really KNOW that, and got her Jack anyway (so she’d have a friend) and she punished both of us the entire time for that faux pas! Now I’m trying to do what HE wants instead of what I want, because I would get TWO if I could.
I hear you. We made that mistake with one of our Bassets. Turned out he wanted to be the only dog! You’re a good cat Mom, doing what you think Jack wants.
Yes, I’m a bonafide cat lady! I will never get only one kitty at a time again! If I would have gotten two when I got Jack, they would have played together, raised each other, and probably not bothered Girl Kitty at all! Plus I would now have two cats instead of only one! Lesson learned!
O my goodness do I understand what you are saying about getting a kitty companion for Jack! If we would get a kitty companion for HRH Thomasina The Duchess of Penny Lane, I am afraid that she would end up in Kitty Therapy!!! Not good at all.😑 When Kitty ain’t happy, ain’t NOBODY happy!!!

When you posted about Jack for the first time, you were wondering how Girl Kitty would take to him. I wanted to shout from the roof top NO NO NO (because of my own experience with doing the very same) but there were so many posts about how good it will be for Girl that I didn’t want to to be a downer. We all try to do the best we can, and learn from it.
I’m glad I did it because otherwise I wouldn’t have Jack! But, you’re right, now that I know, I don’t want to upset him. He’s only 3, I will be waiting a long time for new kitties. Hope I can do it.

I have your new calendar hanging in the dining room. My 5 year old grandson loves to look at it, and tries to read all the little messages and special dates. We look forward to the new page each month.

I love the mug idea and also the Trilogy! I just finished Isle of Dreams (loved it) and would love to see all 3 books on the big (or little) screen. I am a Michigander so know about snow and seasons but we are never as isolated as you (I am 20 minutes outside Detroit so a city girl). I have recently been able to work from home about once a week and I am loving it, even more so now that my husband is retired. I love working in my jammies and not having to brave the cold, though I tend to visit the refrigerator a bit too often when I work from home. I’ve decided if I worked from home very day, I would need to get a little more disciplined. Just typing that makes me want a mug of Hot Cocoa. Thanks for the lovely pictures and the lovely post. PS I can relate to Joe, I have always loved to shovel snow too; though these days my back doesn’t like it quite as much.

I’d love a book about your house~the history would keep me reading til I finished the book! Our cottage-next to our winterized house was built in 1906 and three of us have seen a friendly ghost…our son, our son-in-law and me! Have you or Joe seen a friendly ghost or spirit in your house? We got 18″ of snow last weekend and finally got out today…now there is some kind of storm coming tonight…isn’t the anticipation of a snow storm as exciting as the storm itself? I’m working through my pile of books~I’m enjoying Anderson Cooper and his mom Gloria Vanderbilt’s book ” The Rainbow Comes and Goes.” Can’t wait to read “News of the World” by Paulette Giles…can’t wait to hear about your life in pictures-in movie or tv form! I haven’t seen any ghosts, nor have I heard any poltergeist activity, all is peaceful here, but I do feel the history, and the pitter-patter of little feet running around upstairs from the four Bowditch children who grew up here in the 50s. All I have to do is think about it, and there they are! And as mother-of-the-house I want to yell upstairs, “You kids keep it down!”😊

I thought I had posted on here the other day but do not see it. Just wanted to say how much I enjoy not only your blog but your books as well. I’m just finishing A Fine Romance and I am enthralled with it! I read various parts to my hubby and he enjoys it, too. We have considered traveling to England and your book is just making us more excited to do so. However, questioning whether we should do this consider our world’s troubles now. Just so exited that you could one day (and I hope not too far away) soon have a movie. Also I love the idea of a mug all of us could purchase. Your paper one is delightful. Here in OH we have a layer of snow and temps were below zero end of last week and now in teens.
I’m always a little afraid to go away, and always SO happy that I did. Armchair travel is good too!
I spent a good part of the weekend holed up inside with a kitty on my lap, sipping a hot mug of tea, listening to classical music and looking at the pouring rain outside my living room window. As blissful as that was, I think I might like the coziness and beauty of your house and surroundings better though! But more importantly…please do make mugs!!! Immediately bought candles from the sweet nuns and they are wonderful!! They are wonderful to wrap two up with tissue and a nice ribbon to give as a nice gift!! Except I have a tendency to want them ALL for myself!! Your house is so cozy and wonderful and I’m so glad you enjoy it so much. We enjoy right along with you!! Ya know I missed buying the small 2017 calendar and had to buy it online!!! Wow….sold out fast! That won’t happen with me again because I’m going to put on my ninja feet (what is that??😝) and grab them as soon as they come out!! Also….going to try and make the apple farm!!!

What a fun post, all of it! The convent’s Christmas photo is amazing! All of those stockings tucked in together are too cute.
I love your mug idea, and that prototype design is adorable. I would like to say, in defense of Emma Bridgewater, what we all know – that her mugs are on the expensive side because they are hand-decorated in England by talented craftspeople, not machines. And that is the big part of their charm, at least for me. I haven’t read all of the comments, so I apologize if this has already been pointed out.

Oh yes, you are so right. I went to their factory when I was in England and wrote about it HERE . . . when you think about how much it costs to maintain that factory, the 24-7 commitment required, the investment in machines and accountants, all those talented employees that need to be paid (with benefits), those gorgeous mugs start to look like a deal and a half! If you want anything special these days (i.e. not made in China, not sold at Walmart) it’s expensive ~ but without handmade, without art, special and personal, we all become automodotrons (my own word, definition, I hope, self-explanatory) ~ those mugs are like buying “hyacinths to feed thy soul.” We feel what goes into them, it touches our hearts, defines love of beauty and love of home, and we want to support it, we never want it to go away. Maybe we don’t buy ten, but we can have one, and sometimes that’s all anyone needs.
Susan – your reply is something I wish we could shout from rooftops!! Handmade, art, “hyacinths to feed thy soul”……in our techno age, where some in power want to do away with libraries, bookstores, museums (they say, ” why, you can access it all online”)……thank you for the continual support for the arts….

As we go into a week that will change our country’s climate, Susan, I will spend time reading, practicing water colors, reading with a 4 year old, hugging my dog, calling and writing letters to legislators on both sides of the wide aisle and delivering warm clothing and school supplies to a Woman’s Refugee Alliance…..thanks for your encouragement to live our lives with color, art, family, friends, love for ALL, and respect for how we express our love for our country….other ideas for us to hold joy close during the month of January? …..love you

I had that “Too Mean to Marry” tee-shirt and cannot remember if it was something I got from the Edward Gorey House or not. Anyway, I wore it out to threads!! At the same time I had a cat shirt that I purchased at one of Gorey’s plays in Woods Hole. Your illustrations can often make me fill with joy and memories….love that!
Ha ha, two Too Mean to Marry girls! I still have mine, but it’s also barely threads at this point. Was fun while it lasted! I got mine from a friend and I’m not sure where she got it. I probably never would have bought something with a mad dog on it if I’d seen it in a store, so I was lucky my girlfriend didn’t feel the same way!
It’s almost 2:30 in the afternoon and I’m still in my robe and gown…hmmmm, kinda late to bother changing into street clothes now ~ oh well! Let me throw in my opinion regarding SB mugs, yes, yes, and yes! A big one, ladylike, easy handle, and with your glorious art. The only problem I see outside of finding a USA based potter is deciding on art. What to choose? I’m of the opinion that just about every girlfriend would want Jack represented, sure some strangers might not get it, but that’s okay. I have to tell you that I adopted two tuxedo boy kitty’s this past year, Farley and Finnegan. They are beautiful, but WILD children! I’m pretty excited already thinking about how I would display my new mugs here, real estate has become quite dear now in my little kitchen. Keep warm Susan, and enjoy the comfort of home and hearth!

A house book? Hmm… Didn’t John Grisham do that in “A Painted House”? Your’s would have to be unique;perhaps a cookbook/housebook? We are snuggling into our little house and trying to fight off the cold. 11 degrees and less. Spring is 3 minutes a day closer each day. Not enough time left to cozy in: water colour painting for a newbie, quilting a new quilt, shopping online, getting supper out of the freezer, measuring snow depth on top of the Jeep…enjoying evergreen plants and trees and their silhouettes against white marshmellow world backgrounds. Did I mention I shut the heat off the upstairs bedroom and at bedtime snuggle under three (3!) quilts and never mind that it is 57 degrees in my room? Can’t do that in July!

Would probably have to do pajamas overseas if at all . . . and that’s another thing they require you to buy thousands of pairs of, I’ve looked into it. I wanted to make duvet covers, pillow cases and jammies. Would be so wonderful! It’s just the cost of everything these days!
Perhaps if you came up with a pattern and maybe design fabric we could make our own. And those of us who do sew could make pairs of jammies for other girlfriends. ??? Just an idea !

In the midst of reading your always inspiring blog, my sweet little granddaughter woke up from her nap too early! So, I settled down in my rocking chair in front of my fireplace, with her cuddled in my lap and the whole house napped together. Still in our pajamas, and loving the warm, cozy afternoon! Winter has its perks!

Oh, Susan! The way you began this blog was like re reading Martha’s Vineyard~Isle of Dreams! I was picturing you in your jammies and shawl and recalling my picture of the younger version of you in Holly Oak doing the same thing, as a budding author. The continuity of YOU is very comforting! I do so love the way you write and describe life!
The mug: it is a given that you would sell many! I really like the shape you made, and since first seeing your blue and white border it has been a favorite of mine. I see we all have our preferences, so you might have to make quite an assortment, though we will most likely love any design you like! I like the cherry design and the blue/white floral border, but being the classical person I am, I would like them to each be on their “own” mug, with matching border and handle! I believe you have lifelong job security!
I still marvel that Burnell and I were able to meet you and Joe on the Queen Mary 2, and I cherish the memory. You are a delight on paper, on your blog, and in person!
I love the Apple Farm and would love to see you there, but the distance, the details of my life, and the date do not jive. sigh.
We are having record snowfall in Central Oregon, also. Our son has come three times to clear our long driveway, and 5 of his 7 little men do an amazing job of clearing our walks.
We all have so much in common and so much to be thankful for. Thank you for taking time to write to us~and read from us! Oops! I was so excited to communicate that I forgot I was going to refrain from responding because you have so much to do.

I would love to read a book about your house, it is so charming. I very shyly took a glimpse of the front and back while visiting Martha’s Vineyard last year and was amazed; it really is the perfect dream home. I was standing on the sidewalk in the back and was marveling that yes, I am looking at the house that I’ve seen a million times on your website, and yes, this is the house that Susan paints in, and contains all of the sweet things you’ve shared with us. I really had to pinch myself, it was such a thrill. Then a neighbor walked by, said hello, scared me to death at which time I turned mute. Felt like a real dope. But back to the house. Part of the loveliness lies in its story, the story of you & Joe and the life you have chosen to live in it. I SO enjoy reading about all of the special moments you’ve enjoyed in those walls, and a book that displays more of the lovely gardens, furnishings, pictures, colors, fabrics and rooms would be fabulous. You have just caught all of the essence of home I think. In this case, my home, but for everyone really. Thank you Julie. We just got lucky in 1989 when this house was up for sale, it was still during the days when houses like this one were affordable for one thing. And we didn’t “know” the house like we do now. She turned out to be a very wonderful person.
Wonderful idea, Julie. I think all of the girlfriends would love to see a book about “the house”. I know I go back again and again to photos of the rooms and the decor. Mary Engelbreit published a book about her home in 2004 called Home Sweet Home. It is a “happy book” for me, and I know Susan’s would be also.
Your blogs are special gifts and they always bring me smiles and warm fuzzies! I’m not sure your creative mind ever rests, but you bring such happiness to so many and I thank you for that. I’m so happy I found you, Susan! We spent part of our honeymoon on Martha’s Vineyard in September. My hunny spent summers there and I’ve fallen in love after visiting a few times. We rented a lovely house in Aquinnah and I found your book, Isle of Dreams, while visiting Edgartown Books on my birthday! Honeymoon + birthday + sweet book = magical times. I finished before we even left and then to my delight … 2 more books and so much more. In November, my dad unexpectedly passed away and I put away your stories for happier times. It’s been such a mix of emotions – happy, sad, happy, sad. On Christmas morning, there was Heart of the Home, wrapped under the tree – a surprise from my groom. You can imagine the tears – there were many. It got me thinking and feeling again… We went to Boston after Christmas to visit hubby’s parents and last minute I tucked, Isle of Dreams into my bag. I’m so happy I did. It’s helped me dream again… reading this blog – seeing, listening – its so delightful. Thank you for everything you do!

Happy snow day Susan! I was wondering if you had snow on Martha’s Vineyard. We got wonderful fluffy snow here in the Maritimes from the storm you had, only a day or so later than you. I actually went snowshoeing with my girlfriend this afternoon…my first time. It was awesome, the day was so crisp and fresh. Love the photo of the convent. So many beautiful stockings. My Mom knits socks and I’ve been getting her to knit me Christmas stockings in all kinds of festive colours. I didn’t respond, but I enjoyed the tour of the convent you blessed us with. It put the icing on the “Christmas Cake” for me. So inspiring I think I want to move in. I so wish we could buy the dishes you have designed. And books….I think we could keep you writing for eternity to fill our tanks…trip to Scotland, all about your lovely old house, oh my, so many. My Mom keeps telling me how much she likes Heart of the Home. We gave it to her for Christmas. I hope all goes well with your meeting with the screenwriter. Can you imagine buying DVDs of Susan Branch like Little House on the Prairie?
I spoke to the screenwriter yesterday. She’s almost done with the script and will send it to me soon! Can’t wait! I bet you have the cutest Christmas stockings ever!
Awesome, exciting news Susan!! I am going to start praying about this. Almost sounds too good to be true, but it is. Yes, our whole family has a complete wardrobe of wonderful Christmas stockings knit by my Mom. They are pretty special. I knew she knit socks, so I asked her to make the legs and feet longer, and knit them in gorgeous Christmas colours, and she did. Now we all have heirloom gifts from her. In fact, I have two new ones on her list for this year already. I thought, well the sweaters and such the knitters make eventually go out of style, but Christmas stockings are timeless. Great idea if anyone has knitters in their family. You can fill them on Christmas Eve, or use them to decorate.
Timeless. My mom “made” our stockings. She bought printed fabric at Penneys, way back when, flannel printed with stockings on them, all she had to do was cut them out and sew them together, but she had to make LOTS of them … and we still treasure those stockings. Brilliant, knitted stockings as heirlooms!
My daughter and her husband bought a beautiful old Victorian home, and she has all these gorgeous Christmas stockings hanging on the railing going upstairs in her front entrance. Quite a nice display to see as you enter her home. I’ve often thought that I could have had a business going for my Mom just knitting Christmas stockings because so many people wanted them. I even have a couple knitted by my grandmother. Someday I’ll pass them on to my granddaughter, her great great granddaughter, who was born on her birthday. Pretty cool, I think.

I have written to you about the tea party I am chairperson for each year at my Rebekah Lodge. I have made paper tea cups and saucers for the tables, they hold the sugar packets :-). If you are willing to share your pattern, I would love to even just be able to make my own paper mugs with your pattern and your paper…. Just a thought.. you know like paper dolls!

All our mugs have a story behind them, from the handprints looking like fish from a grandson to a hand thrown mug from a friend in gorgeous aqua glaze, from an English Rose pattern saying grandmother to a black cat licking it’s whiskers, and a Devon motto mug–so each cup of coffee or tea brings back memories. It would be wonderful to add one of your mugs to our collection!

I’m a lifelong New Englander and can also appreciate the peacefulness of a winter storm (as long as we don’t lose electricity). I can also relate to working in my pjs for I own a very tiny business for which I make quilts and fabric items for others to enjoy. I’m not certain if even those who know me well can completely understand but I can get far more done in my jammies than I do throughout the rest of the day.
I’ve enjoyed your artwork and books for years. Please don’t even hesitate! Make your mugs…or anything else that you’re inspired to do! I’m sure many of us would enjoy them.
We awoke to a SNOW DAY on Saturday here in VA, too. Gotta love it even when you’re retired if the pantry is full, a variety of tea and soups are at hand, and ingredients are available in case you need oatmeal, chili, Santa Fe soup, Brunswick stew, or a loaded baked potato. Bliss! I got dressed, but in the baggiest layers of fleece, Cud’l Duds, and wool socks. Our two cats were miffed by the frosty change in their world.
Today nature is having an actual meltdown, all is soggy, the icicles are getting shorter (some are falling), and the snow is retreating.
Yes, please, make some mugs for sale in perhaps boxes of 4 similar but different designs?

Our snow melted yesterday in a nice 50 degree rain storm. Then the sun came out, and we went for a walk, so it was perfect. I wish we could have that every week. Snowstorm, 2 days to love it, rain, then 3 days of sun. Then another storm!

Hi Susan! Oh my heart….. mugs!!! I have to confess to being a little mug, dishes, pottery, tea towel, Susan Branch anything obsessed!!! :-)…. PLEASE make mugs and I would LOVE it if they were more than an 8 oz size… You know, a good handful size mug!! Home book would be sooooooooo awesome!! Loving this post with your beautiful snow. We have only gotten a couple of small coverings but love to sit on the couch with my MUG of tea and watch those beautiful flakes float on down…. I am a lover of winter also with all its delights. I am sadly in the minority with most of my friends. Maybe it is because I was born in February or that the lifestyle of winter just suits me best… slow and homey and lounge-wear-filled!….luckily I can get away with that since quitting my job (ie. retiring) a couple of years ago….when I have to get really dressed I sometimes regret it!! LOL..I also love that it gets darker sooner and that makes it more cozy and gives me an excuse to quit doing whatever I’m trying to accomplish and just settle in with a crossword puzzle, book, crocheting, or well, nothing at all…. Thanks for sharing your beauty in your neck of the woods and also your talent…. Take care and enjoy the cozy season…oh, I think seasonal mugs would be great!!! o.k… that is all… for now!!

Our weather in Texas has been bumpitty, so I have been reading a lot.
I must ask if you have ever visited the other islands around you? I have been reading Elin Hilderbrand’s books which take place mostly on Nantucket and one took place on the outermost island ( sometimes part of Whale Island)…..I believe it is membership only.
Then along came Alice Hoffman writing “Illumination Night” which takes place on Martha’s Vineyard.
Guess the question is do you ever visit the other islands near you?

We’ve been to Nantucket several times … and Cuttyhunk, another nearby very small island. Tuckernuck is part of Nantucket, another tiny island very close to it, but I haven’t been there. It’s sailboat heaven around here with our Islands, the craggy coastlines of Rhode Island and Maine, lots of places to stop and visit!

Did you see the video from the Portland Zoo with the polar bears loving their 10″ of snow? So adorable! I love snow days and the feeling of isolation…for a day or two, then I need to get out! Now we have a UV rating of ZERO in western PA!! on a scale from 1-10. That tells you how thick the clouds are! We need lights on in the house during the day…so depressing…so that’s when I need some sunshine and read your blog, listening to Bonnie Raitt (love her) and going to make chicken noodle soup.
My calendar subject wishes: Flowers of the month, whatever perennials/flowering shrubs are in bloom that month, birds, colorful ones and objects of the month, bicycles, beach umbrellas, leaf piles, Christmas trees, whatever are the iconic elements of beauty for that month. For a mug, I love bluebirds. Dogwood blossoms. Yes, please!!
You’ll be in CA at the Apple Farm on my husband’s 70th birthday! He acts 26 so he’s NOT old!! I’m trying to come up with a unique way to celebrate his life.

Love to hear your calendar wishes… Hope I’m doing right by you! Have you ever done a photo album for your husband? I did one for Joe one year, not really me, but I got an album and extra pages and sent one to each of his friends and family and asked them do do a scrapbook page with photos for Joe. That album is priceless. They all signed their pages, and got Joe in every aspect of his life, from childhood to now, along with significant events ~ sometimes people wrote letters or drew a picture, and each page was truly unique no matter what they did . . . it is really such a fun thing to look at. We did one for my mom for her 80th birthday and she probably looks at it every day now.
Love this idea Susan! I am a scrapbooker so it makes total sense to me! We did one for my daddy for his 70th and then he passed away five months later, so I’m a little superstitious about doing one for Doug. But he’s much healthier than my dad was. <3
But imagine if he would have passed away without that wonderful memory book! I have one, Joe does, and my mom does and so far we are all still here 💖, so have faith . . . xoxox

Love all the comments on this post. I splurged on an Emma Bridgewater cup a few years ago and use it every day. I LOVE IT, the one with tulips all round. So cheerful and sturdy, almost impossible to tip over. BUT I would LOVE yours as well or even better I’m sure. Probably a real time consumer to get that project going though. I’m excited about the possibility of a MOVIE 🙂 EEEK. I can see you and Joe standing in front of the HOLLYWOOD sign on the hills of La La Land. I hope something happens.

Oh, did you get the picture of the pussyproject knit hat? Take that DJT!!! my girlfriend who is making them just had breast cancer surgery Wednesday, but feels great and is marching in Park City, Utah on January 21. She is exactly our age!!! Planning her 100th birthday party. 😉
