A SURPRISE

I promised you “a surprise” in my last post (about a hundred years ago, oh my goodness, I’m so late)! MUSICA (nice old Frank)🎶 I don’t usually start things off with a photo of me, but I had to make an exception to add oomph to my explanation for why I’ve been away so long! In the photo, I’m dressed and on my way to give a talk at Island Writes, but you may notice something not quite right.

Yeah, why is she wearing that black glove? What an odd-looking glove. Hey, that’s not a glove! No. It. Is. Not. It is a (stupid) cast for a broken wrist. A broken right wrist. The hand that does everything. So anyway, I broke it a little over a month ago while packing up things for the yard sale. Tripped over bags, hand-to-floor, caught myself, the end. Which also ended the infamous yard sale for this year. Ended almost everything, because I had no idea what all this hand did until I lost it. Besides typing, writing, and painting, it opens cat food cans, washes hair, signs books, holds a freaking fork, puts on earrings, uses scissors, deadheads roses, DRIVES, and chops onions. Hello. At first I couldn’t do any of it, I gave my brain a new kind of workout by practicing writing with my left hand, but one-by-one I’ve been getting things back. And Look Ma, I’m typing! I think I MIGHT get the brace off Sept. 14, my Doctor keeps little secrets to himself, I’ve learned, but I am hoping! It wasn’t a bad break, no surgery; I glowed like a 7 year old when he called me a “good patient.” It’s the little things in life. Yes, physical therapy will follow, but I’ve been doing exercises to keep my arms strong, so I hope normalcy returns soon. Thank goodness for Joe! He’s been taking such good care of me!

But I promised you surprises, and you’re going to get surprises! 🌸 Our Courage Charm has arrived . . . isn’t it wonderful? Gold with a streak of pink that goes all the way around. Pink, the color of nurturing, for yourself, and for others. The color of love.💝

It comes on its own little card . . . the charm is engraved with the words “Courage, Dear Heart . . .”💞

Thought you’d like to see my bracelet . . . I think I have them all so far!

And this? This is not for sale! This surprise of all four-seasons of my cups (which are all sold-out and no longer available anywhere on earth), is for the lucky person whose name gets drawn by Vanna in the next post! I told you I would have surprises! Just leave a comment, and you’ll be entered! It can be for you, or maybe you’ll want to take it apart and make four Christmas 🎄 presents out of it! Leave a comment!’Tis almost the season! Here comes

And this? This is for everyone! A brand new bookmark for all my Anglophile, Corgie-adoring, Queen-admiring girlfriends and the people they love! Just click HERE, print it on card-stock, have it laminated if you like . . . it makes a very sweet stocking stuffer or book-gift accountrement.(In case you’re new here, the bookmark is tucked into a copy of my book A Fine Romance, Falling in Love with the English Countryside.)

And what else? Oh yes, for everyone that preordered and waited so patiently, I’m thrilled to tell you the new cups are scheduled to arrive in California TOMORROW, on Thursday! And yes, I ordered extra so we would have some to last through Christmas, just in cases. The heart cup is another Courage item. The world is so wild these days, we need as much of this as we can get. And there’s another secret about this cup . . .💞

I didn’t design it! I designed a red cup with hearts on it which Joe thought was a little boring, and said, “Why don’t you make it look like champagne?” I said, naturally, “What are you talking about?” He tried to tell me, but I couldn’t picture it, was running out to lunch with girlfriends, and said, willy-nilly, over my shoulder, “Draw me a picture!” Because I know Joe is an artist even though he never does it. But I didn’t expect THIS. Champagne bubbles made into hearts. Of course I fell in love with it. My boy is a genius!

Very appropriately, this is Joe’s first cup ~ Champagne Hearts! He will very likely never do another one, not sure I can figure out how I tricked him into this one!🙃

I designed the bottom and the handle, so it was a group effort. From the Heart of our Home.💖 You’ll have them by the end of next week!👏

This one too! The Martha’s Vineyard cup, arriving at the Studio tomorrow, and in case you’re coming to the Island, it’s already available in the shop that carries my things here ~ which, by the way, has changed their name to Vineyard Arts Gallery, it’s still in the same place in downtown Vineyard Haven, and Robin still runs it. And one more by-the-way . . . another reason for you to leave a comment ➡️ Yes! I’ll be sending some lucky person their very own Martha’s Vineyard cup too! It’s an Autumn extravaganza!

This too! Leave a comment to win this Pumpkinhead cup! So far that makes three lucky winners and you only need to leave one comment to be entered for everything! Why you may ask? Because I can! (Writing now, from day after I published this post: Reading the lovely comments ~ can’t answer so many with bad hand, but reading 🤗, loving, sometimes tears, THANK YOU.💞 This is why. We are the world!) I detect a need for cheer and doing my best in this little world of ours, to make some of it for my Girlfriends! And, to make it more fun, the winner of this Pumpkinhead cup will also get a box of my Inspiration Notecards.

Hope you love them!

Jack also wanted me to let you know, in his own unique way (by draping himself on the thing I’m trying to photograph), that the 2020 calendars have arrived! If you preordered, you should have them!

Other good news, our teapot plates are back in stock! We’ve gotten lots of requests ~ sooo happy they’re finally here!

Great for holiday cookies, as a little serving dish and. . .

also looks great hanging on a wall!

And brand NEW, two night lights!

Blue dots on a scalloped porcelain shade!

And little flowers too!

You can read about them HERE.

I have soooo much more to tell you, but this is my first day back at typing and I’ve just been made a wee bit painfully aware, it’s time to stop! I’m only half done! Wah! Guess I will join Jack doing what we do best!

Still eating yummy whole food!

Have devolved to one-finger typing, left-hand ~ but one last thing, I’m reading this helpful book I think you might like.

Interesting book that reminds us of our lovely humanity . . .

We need to remember in our crazy world . . . also, from me to you💞, want to remind:

  6. Colleen says:

Oh Susan..I ‘so’ look forward to your letters! I read each and every one and always love looking at all your drawings and verses. So many things you write about and pictures you share, always brings back such pleasant ( and bittersweet) memories of days gone by. So many things I miss from long ago, but life chugs along and we must move along with it and savour each and every minute. One just can’t take life for granted! Thank you for always bringing a smile to my face and some joy to my day. ( take care of your broken/ mending wing!)

  7. Judy from KC says:

  9. pat addison (cave junction,OR) says:

Hello Susan, and Hello Girlfriends!! glad to see you are on the mend now and recovering beautifully, I can sympathize with you, I sprained my wrist, never turn your back on a rooster in the chicken yard. our overstuffed feather duster of a rooster tried to attack me and I had a bucket of feed with me. well the bucket landed on him and I hit the ground pretty hard and sprained my wrist… the left one!!! but the brace is off now and I am back to full speed after 2 weeks of healing. next time the rooster even gets near me I will have my bat ready for him….. WHAM!!! but the barnyard is busy, all the new babies are in the yard now and our rooster has been the center of flap and swat attacks by the youngsters, they flap up to him and swat at him with their wings and run for cover…. he hates that…LOL!!!! we have 6 wild turkeys hanging around so I throw some feed out to them, and our squirrels are busy gathering up nuts a bit early this year. that and their fur looks a bit thicker and darker now. the birds are all busy gathering seeds and eating, looks like everyone is getting ready for a long cold winter. the crickets are really singing and this weekend is the Labor Day festival… 2 days of Tuff Trucks and 3 days of my favorite burgers… Lion burgers. I don’t know what they do or how they do it but the Lions club makes the best burgers in the valley and I only get them once a year so I pig out a little…. YUM!!!! school starts next week, so the Labor Day festival is the last big hurrah for the summer and after that everything settles down a bit. the gardens have bees slow to produce this year but we are finally getting lots of eggplant, squash, tomatoes and peppers and my pumpkin patch is doing really well this year, lots of pumpkins for Halloween. for the Autumn decorations are slowly showing up around the house and my beloved Autumn towels are in the laundry and will be out on the line drying. pretty soon it will be time to stop watering the gardens and the lawns and roll up the hoses and hang them up, hang up the sprinklers and put the clothesline away…. I love my clothesline, everything smells so good after drying in the sunshine and fresh air. time to go hang up the last load of laundry for today and get those towels out in the sunshine to dry. time to also pull out soup and stew recipes and casseroles, hearty meals for Fall and Winter. have you heard the Fall/Winter predictions are out from the Farmer’s almanac….. going to a freezing, frosty, and bone-chilling winter this year and cold wet Fall. better get the sweaters, and warm jackets out and aired… Fall will be here soon. Have a great Labor day weekend everyone, Happy Labor Day. hugs……. 😀

  10. Carik J. Huebner says:

Oh Susan, that was not FAIR to fall during yard sale prep. You love to do lovely things and often requires work, so thank goodness for your Joe. Keep healing and sharing your positive attitude. Love your quotes, also write them down. Oh that Jack, I want to reach through and pet him. Hmm, kitties are particular about that. Reading this lights up my day. Now will continue prep for the grandchildren visiting this weekend. I always go back to read again. Love your photo outfit!

  11. Lori from Portland says:

I LOVE the champagne hearts cup! So charming. Thanks for your wonderful blog.

  12. Stefanie Price says:

you have been busy!…in spite of the broken wrist…so glad you are almost totally mended!!!

  13. Cindy says:

Oh, everything is so lovely!!! I could get very lost in your world, to be sure.

  14. Bobbie Jean says:

My favorite time of day is morning–when everyone who works is away working and the young people are either asleep or off to school, and there’s no artificial dryer sheet scent funking up the air. It’s all so quiet then. You’ll find me on the patio. I hear twigs falling from the self-pruning willow, leaves whisper as they brush against each other on their way down, and bird song is crystal clear. The wind sounds sweeter when it doesn’t have to compete with horns honking, tires squealing, dogs barking and people shouting. I feel deeply connected to everything when we’re blessed with peace and quiet.

We’re overstimulated all day, every day and into the night. I think it explains why we’re so cross and short-tempered with each other. Overcrowding makes us push back against those we used to embrace. We all need quiet time to disconnect and recharge.

I do that when I come here to read your most recent posts. I don’t subscribe. I make a conscious effort to check your blog. Choice is freedom.

    Thank you.

    • Carol says:

you are spot on regarding the NOISE, I feel its one of the biggest pollutants of this modern age and incredibly stressful.
We live up a hill from Lake Okanagan which is extremely beautiful, but sadly is ruined by the now constant roar of motorbikes and boats with extremely loud engines as well as light water aeroplanes, which gives me all the more reason to enjoy Autumn, especially Susan’s Autumn book, which my daughter gave me for Mother’s day this year and I’m waiting till its officially Autumn to read, can’t wait.

  15. Theresa says:

So sorry you have had to deal with a broken wrist. Times like this make you appreciate those “normal” days for how special they really are.

Maybe Jack can help. I love the last pic in the blog with Jack’s paws up front. Don’t you love kitty and doggie paws? So sweet!
I just bought the “courage” bead and I love it. I like the pic you posted with your charms on a wrist bracelet. I have been looking for a neck chain for mine. Take care, and for wrist therapy, watch lots of old movies and drink lemonade in the garden. Love, Claudia

  22. Jennifer from Kentucky says:

So sorry to hear about your accident. I will continue to keep you in my prayers. I speak from experience, though, when I say sometimes we have to look at these types of situations as an opportunity to slow down and really take notice of the little things. It also helps to be pampered by the ones we love.😉. I hope you are back to normal strength soon–just in time for the beautiful transition to fall. God bless.

  23. Sheila says:

Sorry for your accident…another turn on lives journey..

  30. I love the mugs and would love to win one 🙂
What a bummer about your wrist, I can imagine how difficult everything is having only one hand to use especially with your main job being a writer/artist. I hope you recover quick so you can get back to regular ‘ole life!

  31. Janet K Hellmann says:

Better late than never, always look forward to your Blogs and hope you are feeling 100% real soon.

    XOXO

  33. Roselin says:

Sorry for your injury. It sounds inconvenient. My right leg and your right arm may be bumbling cousins. I’m in an air cast and walking boot without a good story to tell behind. It happened at my favourite place – our cottage by the lake
Now I’m resting and being entertained my minx, mergansers, loons, Canada geese, bears, two cats, my dog Joy and my grown daughter. It is a wonderful world.
    As you quoted
“Come away oh human child to the waters and the wild”.
Any of your giveaways will be cherished in this special place.
May we both be granted quick and complete healing Susan.

    • Debbie Boerger says:

Roselin, Are you in Maine? Or any of the Northern Kingdom states? It is indeed a wonderful world with the call of the loon. I have been in those air casts, boots, for 2 fractures of feet….at different times within an 8 month period. I’d choose broken foot over hands. Having surgeries on both hands now, and I’m going nuts not being able to manipulate things.

      Debbie in Maine

I love to read your blogs. While traveling to Mich, I am reading A Fine Romance and sharing with my husband who is driving.

  58. Mary Ann in Mid-Missouri says:

Your comment, above, “I detect a need for cheer” is right on the nose for me. My husband had a heart attack last week while playing golf with some of his friends. Luckily, they performed CPR until the ambulance got there and they were able to shock his heart a couple of times to get it restarted. Plus, they just happened to be playing at a course just a few miles from the best hospital in Mid-Missouri. We have a long road ahead of us, but hope he will have a long life yet. I’m exhausted and emotional, but your post did cheer me up, as always. I was sorry to hear about your broken wrist. Didn’t you have a rainout the last time you planned a rummage sale? Maybe someone’s trying to tell you something.

  59. Mary Pyle says:

Yikes, Susan, so sorry about your wrist. And, of course, it’s your right wrist. I’m just glad you are able to do a few of the things you like to do while you are healing. I myself fell about a year ago. I was walking with my husband and dog and the next thing I knew, I was down in the middle of the street. I had broken my right arm, but it was a clean break and I didn’t even have to wear a cast. Thank you for taking time to update us on everything – we miss you. I hope you heal quickly and that you are back to normal ASAP. You are definitely an inspiration.

  67. Brigitte says:

Thank you for this giveaway! I’m praying that the Lord heals your hand and you’ll soon be back to doing all the things you love.

  68. Mary Lorenz says:

Susan, so glad that you are on the mend. I love reading through your newsy letters to see what you and your creative spirit have been up to! Have you considered designing a line of washi tape? My journal and I would be very happy if you did! I am working on making my journals look like your wonderful “A Fine Romance” book. Just thought I’d send that little idea to you…

I am inspired by you…thank you for sparking my creative spirit…

Your cups look even better than on the website. I have found many reasons to celebrate with my “Red Letter Day!” Cup!

  70. Melinda Parkman says:

I’m so sorry to hear of your wrist problem. I am having a problem with my right wrist too. I never realized how much I depend on it. Greater appreciation now for sure. Wishing you good (and fast) healing.

  71. Lynne says:

So sorry about your wrist! You do find out how important different body parts are when something goes amiss. I can relate a little as I have a pinched nerve in my right foot, yup the right one. The one that drives the car, and starts you walking and dancing and tapping to music and everything in between. Injections into a nerve is really a joy too! LOL. I need 6, one every two weeks and it feels like a drill right through my foot. How did I get such a thing? Sitting crossed legged on my bed, by scrunching my right foot under my legs! Everyone asks so I thought I’d just put it out there. After the injection pain wears off, I always laugh at myself. Only I could have a pinched nerve from just sitting! If there’s a way to get hurt by seemingly doing nothing, I’m your gal! As my husband says each morning before work, don’t hurt yourself today. I hope you enjoyed my funny tale of my one right foot LOL. HEAL FAST SUSAN WE ADORE YOU!

  72. Meredee Walsh says:

    Love the cups!

  73. Carol Neill says:

Posted a comment on August 28th and cannot find it; so will say again how sorry I was about your wrist and hope it will continue to heal quickly. Loved all the new items and I especially love your beautiful Jack. I have two black and white cats and they are both such a joy. Marley boy helps my husband with his exercises every morning; and my Lily girl provides lots of hugs and kisses. Thank you for this wonderful blog, always a special addition to my day.
    Heal well, Carol

You know Susan, as a fellow illustrator, it always been great fear of mine to hurt my right hand as I use it to do! I appreciate your sharing though, as it helps me get a feel for what it is like should this ever happen! Be patient with yourself as you want to heal well! I am in love with Jack and always makes me smile when you add him to your blog! Also I am so proud of Joe for stepping out of his comfort zone and yes he is an artist you can tell! That is so sweet and he did a great job! I’ve been meaning to ask you though, have a cup size is changed since your old ones as they seem smaller to me. I really want to Martha’s Vineyard one but refused to buy it unless I visit it! Some day soon I hope! As I mentioned in a previous comment, I so love how you dress and this outfit that you are wearing is so charming! A true artist! Please let us know how you are healing up!!

  87. Liz Thompson says:

Congrats to Joe on his first cup! I think he had an excellent, artistic idea.

Love all your beautiful designs and looking forward to your post that always offer a bright side of life and a cheerful nod to the rhythm of the seasons. We adore the flowers and feathered friends in our yard each day and your art reflects so many of those scenes. Thank you Linda P.S. So sweet are the Champagne Heart! Hats off to Joe!

So excited to see the season mugs as a give-a-way! I’m sure you don’t remember but I asked if you would ever sell them as a set? I would love to have them! So sorry about your fall! I can relate as I have had numerous falls but, thankfully, haven’t broken anything…yet. Prayers for speed healing! As a friend of mine once said, “nobody’s got time for that!”

Sorry about your wrist Sue… must be so difficult not doing stuff we take for granted. Especially for you being an artist. As long as you can sip wine using your left hand! Happy healing! 😁

Greetings from your partner in pain in CA. I fell on my way to a wedding no less and now have a matching splint on my left hand…broken bone below my pinky. I always love your posts and look forward to each. Enjoy your imposed rest as much as possible.
