A SURPRISE

I promised you “a surprise” in my last post (about a hundred years ago, oh my goodness, I’m so late)! MUSICA (nice old Frank)🎶 I don’t usually start things off with a photo of me, but I had to make an exception to add oomph to my explanation for why I’ve been away so long! In the photo, I’m dressed and on my way to give a talk at Island Writes, but you may notice something not quite right.

Yeah, why is she wearing that black glove? What an odd-looking glove. Hey, that’s not a glove! No. It. Is. Not. It is a (stupid) cast for a broken wrist. A broken right wrist. The hand that does everything. So anyway, I broke it a little over a month ago while packing up things for the yard sale. Tripped over bags, hand-to-floor, caught myself, the end. Which also ended the infamous yard sale for this year. Ended almost everything, because I had no idea what all this hand did until I lost it. Besides typing, writing, and painting, it opens cat food cans, washes hair, signs books, holds a freaking fork, puts on earrings, uses scissors, deadheads roses, DRIVES, and chops onions. Hello. At first I couldn’t do any of it, I gave my brain a new kind of workout by practicing writing with my left hand, but one-by-one I’ve been getting things back. And Look Ma, I’m typing! I think I MIGHT get the brace off Sept. 14, my Doctor keeps little secrets to himself, I’ve learned, but I am hoping! It wasn’t a bad break, no surgery; I glowed like a 7 year old when he called me a “good patient.” It’s the little things in life. Yes, physical therapy will follow, but I’ve been doing exercises to keep my arms strong, so I hope normalcy returns soon. Thank goodness for Joe! He’s been taking such good care of me!

But I promised you surprises, and you’re going to get surprises! 🌸 Our Courage Charm has arrived . . . isn’t it wonderful? Gold with a streak of pink that goes all the way around. Pink, the color of nurturing, for yourself, and for others. The color of love.💝

It comes on its own little card . . . the charm is engraved with the words “Courage, Dear Heart . . .”💞

Thought you’d like to see my bracelet . . . I think I have them all so far!

And this? This is not for sale! This surprise of all four-seasons of my cups (which are all sold-out and no longer available anywhere on earth), is for the lucky person whose name gets drawn by Vanna in the next post! I told you I would have surprises! Just leave a comment, and you’ll be entered! It can be for you, or maybe you’ll want to take it apart and make four Christmas 🎄 presents out of it! Leave a comment!’Tis almost the season! Here comes

And this? This is for everyone! A brand new bookmark for all my Anglophile, Corgie-adoring, Queen-admiring girlfriends and the people they love! Just click HERE, print it on card-stock, have it laminated if you like . . . it makes a very sweet stocking stuffer or book-gift accountrement.(In case you’re new here, the bookmark is tucked into a copy of my book A Fine Romance, Falling in Love with the English Countryside.)

And what else? Oh yes, for everyone that preordered and waited so patiently, I’m thrilled to tell you the new cups are scheduled to arrive in California TOMORROW, on Thursday! And yes, I ordered extra so we would have some to last through Christmas, just in cases. The heart cup is another Courage item. The world is so wild these days, we need as much of this as we can get. And there’s another secret about this cup . . .💞

I didn’t design it! I designed a red cup with hearts on it which Joe thought was a little boring, and said, “Why don’t you make it look like champagne?” I said, naturally, “What are you talking about?” He tried to tell me, but I couldn’t picture it, was running out to lunch with girlfriends, and said, willy-nilly, over my shoulder, “Draw me a picture!” Because I know Joe is an artist even though he never does it. But I didn’t expect THIS. Champagne bubbles made into hearts. Of course I fell in love with it. My boy is a genius!

Very appropriately, this is Joe’s first cup ~ Champagne Hearts! He will very likely never do another one, not sure I can figure out how I tricked him into this one!🙃

I designed the bottom and the handle, so it was a group effort. From the Heart of our Home.💖 You’ll have them by the end of next week!👏

This one too! The Martha’s Vineyard cup, arriving at the Studio tomorrow, and in case you’re coming to the Island, it’s already available in the shop that carries my things here ~ which, by the way, has changed their name to Vineyard Arts Gallery, it’s still in the same place in downtown Vineyard Haven, and Robin still runs it. And one more by-the-way . . . another reason for you to leave a comment ➡️ Yes! I’ll be sending some lucky person their very own Martha’s Vineyard cup too! It’s an Autumn extravaganza!

This too! Leave a comment to win this Pumpkinhead cup! So far that makes three lucky winners and you only need to leave one comment to be entered for everything! Why you may ask? Because I can! (Writing now, from day after I published this post: Reading the lovely comments ~ can’t answer so many with bad hand, but reading 🤗, loving, sometimes tears, THANK YOU.💞 This is why. We are the world!) I detect a need for cheer and doing my best in this little world of ours, to make some of it for my Girlfriends! And, to make it more fun, the winner of this Pumpkinhead cup will also get a box of my Inspiration Notecards.

Hope you love them!

Jack also wanted me to let you know, in his own unique way (by draping himself on the thing I’m trying to photograph), that the 2020 calendars have arrived! If you preordered, you should have them!

Other good news, our teapot plates are back in stock! We’ve gotten lots of requests ~ sooo happy they’re finally here!

Great for holiday cookies, as a little serving dish and. . .

also looks great hanging on a wall!

And brand NEW, two night lights!

Blue dots on a scalloped porcelain shade!

And little flowers too!

You can read about them HERE.

I have soooo much more to tell you, but this is my first day back at typing and I’ve just been made a wee bit painfully aware, it’s time to stop! I’m only half done! Wah! Guess I will join Jack doing what we do best!

Still eating yummy whole food!

Have devolved to one-finger typing, left-hand ~ but one last thing, I’m reading this helpful book I think you might like.

Interesting book that reminds us of our lovely humanity . . .

We need to remember in our crazy world . . . also, from me to you💞, want to remind:

    Hi Susan!
Happy that you are on the mend and managing (with Joe’s wonderful care) to
    survive your fall.
My daughter, Nikki, (another fan of yours) & I just started Weight Watchers
2 weeks ago and we are doing well & feeling great. Thanks for the push
towards healthier eating… it really does make a difference!
One quick question… What’s happening with the possible movie of your life?
The thought of it just flitted across my mind, so I thought I would ask and
see if it’s still a possibility. Sending love your way from California.

  10. Martha says:

You’re the one mending, yet giving US gifts! How like YOU, dear Susan. Healing thoughts headed your way. Thanks for the beautiful blog post!

  11. Elrica in Virginia says:

Democracy! I have always loved your blogs and tweets. I enjoy and appreciate them so much more now that you speak up on the important (urgent, even) issues of the day. You put honesty and integrity above profit…oh, if members of Congress would learn from your example! Bless you, Susan Branch.

Heal well, Susan! I love your “courage, dear hearts” message and I wonder if you’ve ever seen my favorite sign in the world. An abandoned brewery near Borough Market, Southwark, London. Every time I see it, my heart is lifted. “Take Courage” was such an inspired early advertisement to encourage people to drink beer! Whatever works …. Hope this link goes through. tripadvisor.co.uk/LocationPhotoDirectLink-g186338-d5001466-i255805076-Ghostsigns_Walking_Tours-London_England.html

  15. Nancy R. says:

    Hi Susan,
I know what you are going through. Back in November 2 days before Thanksgiving, I fell backwards down the stairs after vacuuming them. I put the vacuum cleaner away and went back up the stairs to get the attachment I left on the 2 step. I stepped backwards to turn around and I guess I was not on a step. I went to the landing hoping to hit the wall and sit down there on the landing but was airborne and hit the floor in the family room. Broke both wrists. My husband was not in the house so I called the neighbor with my left hand and they both came over and one went to the barn to get my husband and the other came into me which I was still on the floor because I was dizzy from hitting my head. So my dear husband did everything for 6 weeks. Including bathing. feeding and toilet duties for me. It takes the marriage vows to the next level. ( we are married 33 yrs). I too had therapy after the casts were off. My right wrist was worse then the left since that was under me when I fell. I am right handed. It still hurts when I use the mouse and vacuum the floor. But I am back knitting and painting and doing all housework. So you well get there. But therapy will be slow, just hang in there.
God Bless, Nancy R. from PENNA.

  16. ann in E. oregon says:

  17. Cecelia White says:

    Susan,
I often wonder if, when we don’t hear from you, something has happened. I guess this time it was true. It’s difficult to be without just one part of our bodies working properly, isn’t it? I’m glad to know you are healing and glad to see your new goodies for sale.
    Cecelia

  18. Christabelle says:

We have missed you, and appreciate “seeing” you again. Wishing you complete healing very soon.

  19. I’m so sorry to hear about your arm. I’m on a dream vacation in Europe and the other day I missed the bottom stair in our Medieval house. I laid there and cried a bit but nothing is broken. I’m thankful for me and sad for you. I’ve thought of you as I visit France, Italy Austria and Switzerland. I’ve been sharing photos on FB and writing blogs when I have internet and it’s made me think of you and when you’ve been on your England journeys. Do you remember when I told you that my girls were using your book as a text book for travel writing? It’s been a few years. Well, now they’re 18 and have been blogging about our trip. You’re a good teacher. Check out their blog if you want. They’re hard-core kitten lovers too. thetravelingtwins.travel.blog/ Get well soon!!!!

  20. Joan Henry says:

Our Dear Susan! I am sorry about your wrist :-(. And thank you for the courage and the great book recommendations. I fear my grandchildren will think that of their parents, ‘why is the phone more interesting than me?’ .
    Love ya,
    Joan
    PS: Got my calendars already!

  21. Debbie Mc says:

So very sorry to read about your wrist. Oh yes when we can not use our hands it is so difficult to do every little important thing in our day…arthritis in my fingers can be painful. Hope your therapy is going well. The artwork on your seasonal cups are delightful!

  22. Shannon Parnall says:

Courage is just what I need today. Thank you for your inspiring words and heart warming art.

  23. Barbara Sheet says:

You are a light in the world and your words remind me of the sisterhood of women (and brotherhood of men) that help spread love and healing. Only love and light can drive out hate and darkness. I love all your designs and still smile when I look at the picture I had taken of me with you (in Saint Charles Mo. on your tour) that sits on my desk. I am always glad to see your blog and wish you speedy recovery. Garage sales are hazardous!

  24. Katherine M in Austin says:

Another lovely post from a lovely girlfriend! Here’s hoping that September 15 is your magic removal day. Please take care of yourself and do your physical therapy. You will recover faster! Thank you for your sweet generosity; as always your new pretties are delightful. Yay, Joe! Wishing you many wonderful days to come, my dear!

  25. Joyce Tanner says:

Isn’t it amazing how our bodies can heal, with time and God. It’s great that Joe helped design a cup and he’s so cute too. Blessings

  26. Sharon M. says:

Hugs and get well wishes are being sent your way. I hope your wrist continues to heal well. I’m head over heels in love with Jack and look forward to pictures and stories of his escapades. Thank you for your blog. It’s always a day brightener.

Cups are darling, would love any of them.

    Heal fast!

  28. Helen says:

Feel better soon! Until you have an injury, you have no idea how much you count on your body! 💕

  29. Carol Johnson says:

I have just found you and your blog and have started reading all your books! I can so relate to your life of fairy tale and just taking care of a house, because that was our job and we were told it was!!! It still is mine! Although I have an empty nest now. I asked my husband what was I suppose to do now, he looked at me and said take care of me! Still praying for my direction and inspiration. Still no answer but…. we shall see hopefully someday it will fall in my lap. I envy you and your strength to run away. Would love to live on Martha’s Vineyard. Thanks for putting it all in words so I can say, yes, I understand that and now, I know why I feel this way! Such inspiration. Hope this is the right place to enter the contest. Thank you again.

  30. Jenette Fetzner says:

Somehow you managed to look fabulous even with your “black glove”! I’m glad the break wasn’t worse! It seems as if that yard sale just wasn’t supposed to be this year.

  31. Janette Willis says:

Hope you’re good as new very soon. Thank you for the blog! I always know where to go when I need a bright spot!

  32. Gini Gould says:

Hi Susan, I just learned of your accident! My face immediately grimaced in disappointment! So very sorry, and am praying for a full recovery for you. Keep us posted through this challenging chapter. We’ve got your back. Thank you.

  33. Kathy Thompson says:

Hi Susan ~ Sorry about the fall. Take care and heal fast. Great news that my Vineyard mug is on its way. Already received the matching book. It’s to be a matched set for my lovely niece for Christmas. She had her own breakup (kinda like yours so many years ago) and she needs to focus on what can be her future, so I thought your lovely story would point her to her own Martha’s Vineyard (so to speak). Take care. Do what the doc says. Kathy (in Rialto, CA)

  34. Barbara Peavler says:

Love your cups and the inspirational notecards. Best wishes for a speedy recovery for your wrist!

  35. Sharon Engel says:

I also fell 3 weeks ago and dislocated my right thumb and pulled muscles in my wrist. But no break, and a splint. I used to say I was ambidextrous, well let’s test that theory, hehe. Heal soon. We are in the same boat.

  36. Maureen W says:

    ❤️ to you!

  37. Susan says:

Hoping you get better very soon!

    world.

  39. I love all your work. You put so much happiness and inspiration into so many lives!
So sorry to hear about your wrist. Be well!

  40. Chris says:

I wondered where you were. I looked for you every day after August 19th because you post about every 20 to 30 days or so. Sorry about your wrist, been there done that, walking up steps after getting mail. Not looking where I was going, boom! stubbed my toe. Missed you, glad to have you back.

  41. Charlotte Wilson says:

I love all the things you create. One of a kind. Thanks for making magic for the rest of us!

  44. Erin Middlebrooks says:

Hoping against hope that I win something from you. I am preparing for a whole new life at 63 and that would be so special. I’m using Isle of Dreams as a guidebook. 😉
Still inspired and following your healthy diet advice. Now walking 3-5 km a day. Every day. And loving how strong my 63 year old body feels now. I’ve lost about 30 pounds almost effortlessly. You were so right!!!
Susan, thank you for everything you do. This planet is a much better place because you are on it.

  45. Teresa Dean says:

Hope you have a speedy recovery. Always enjoy reading your blog, it brightens my spirit..

  46. Cyndy R says:

Oh, Susan, I can relate! I tripped and fell at my grandson’s preschool and broke the top off my left humerus – had surgery where it was reattached, and am living with this huge sling that is driving me crazy. I was planning to create and stamp my Christmas cards and have them done before the end of September. Well looks like I’ll get my sling off any then, but…guess the busiest time of year will be even busier this fall. So glad you are able to do more with your hand but be sure to follow the PT advice!
Great job, Joe, on the heart cup. It’s lovely.
Aren’t we lucky to have such special partners to take care of us in our ‘hour’ of need? My hubby has been wonderful these last few weeks, taking over grandchild care duties, meal chores, laundry, etc. It certainly makes one feel special.

  47. Shannon(Pennsylvania) says:

Love to you, dear Sue. Loads of wishes and prayers and general good vibes being sent your way. Hope your recovery is speedy and complete…meanwhile, please don’t rush the healing process. We are a very, very patient bunch! We’ll wait for you❤️

  48. Carol-Ann Weiss says:

  49. Helen says:

Glad to know you’re on the mend. I’ve missed you!

  50. Shirley Kay says:

Hope your wrist heals quickly. I did the same thing two years ago and still have “flash backs” about how difficult it was!!! Yikes!! Love all your cups and beautiful things! I am filling my home with those GORGEOUS mugs!!!

  51. Luanne Coats says:

Hope your wrist will heal soon. We all take our wonderful, functional bodies for granted, until we really need them. You are blessed to have Joe and Jack to help.
A good girlfriend drove me to an eye appointment yesterday in Kansas City (about 45) miles away, since I knew they would dialate my eyes. I saw a neurological-ophthalmologist for double vision. Unfortunately, he suspects I have Myasthenia Gravis. She was so helpful to also take me into the mess of buildings that is KU Med Center to give a blood sample.
Unfortunately, over night we had an hours long violent thunderstorm, and my friend, Phyllis, emailed me this morning with the dreadful news that the little country church she belongs to, had burned to the ground earlier this morning, probably from a lightning strike. So sad! The church was begun in 1866, but this present building was 102 years old. The previous building was destroyed by a tornado! Please pray for her and the small congregation—-her friendship is such a blessing to me and others.

  52. Cathy says:

Grateful for your happy blog. Love everything you write or make!

  53. Cynthia says:

Thank you so much for this bright spot in my day… It can be soooo depressing reading and listening to the headlines, and along comes your blog of positivity and love! Thank you, Susan, and be well. I hope that you mend quickly and thoroughly.

  54. Marilyn Knodel says:

Dearest Susan, So sorry to hear of your very important right wrist being broken. And all due to a yard sale, yikes ! I’ve been delaying doing one that I need to do. I will have to watch my step, so I don’t repeat your tragedy.
I love your beads and have every one except “kitty” one, sadly because my kitties are dear to me but I have yet to put them on a bracelet. Where or what have you for the bracelet you’re wearing them on ? I’ve thought of Brighton as a bracelet to put them on.
Thank you for your time and your lovely blog and art and pics. Much care sent your way. Have a wonderful Sept. , Fall is coming, I can feel it at moments. Acorns are starting to fall and cooler in mornings.
    TTFN Marilyn

  57. Along with thousands of others, I’m sending good wishes for full and complete healing. Also sending thanks for the wonderful guidance for traveling in England that I gleaned from A Fine Romance. During 5 weeks in April-May, we followed your footsteps (car tracks?) and fell in love with many of the places you described. What lovely memories!

  58. Sally Maubach says:

Love the photo of you, Susan, (except for your poor wrist!)–just delightful! The adorable photos of Jack make me think of a picture frame I have of my cat Floyd–the frame says “Nap Like You Mean It.” Jack seems to take that to heart! Thank you for your cheerful words–your posts always make my day!

  59. Mary Revercomb says:

    Hello Susan & Joe,
Wish you a speedy recovery and hope you have a wonderful & warm Autumn!🍂🍁 Love Joe’s champagne hearts cup 💕🍾 I am heading your way again for the last week in September and staying at the same home on the pond. Hope the corgis come to visit us again this year. Looking forward to the walks to the ocean with the crowds gone and the beaches to ourselves. Happy Trails from one islander to another!⛴🦞🥰

  60. Mary Whiting says:

    Hello Susan,
Are you looking forward to Autumn as much as I am? We are heading to Concord, Mass. in mid-October to celebrate our 16th anniversary. We love that town and visit every other year. Louisa May Alcott and Orchard House, a visit to the cider mill, a walk around Walden Pond…a lovely way to spend the day. I love your photos of Martha’s Vineyard in Fall and look forward to what you have coming this year, also. Blessings for a good healing.
    Mary

  63. Donna Morgan says:

    Just lovely and uplifting.

  64. Lorraine from White Plains (again) says:

Hi Susan — This may be a little late, and maybe someone (or many someones) have mentioned it, but have you tried using the “accessibility” function on the computer to dictate to “Siri” (or who/whatever) instead of typing? You have to remember to dictate punctuation, but you get used to it after a while.
Best wishes for a speedy rehab. (My elderly great-aunt had a similar break and surprised the doctor who removed her cast two weeks earlier than expected — and she credited her recovery to her daily intake of bee pollen! Good stuff!)

  65. Sue Connelly says:

Just be careful with your wrist and baby it!

Dear dear Susan, I pray your wrist heals stronger than ever. Praises for Joe’s care. What a precious description of two special people. Thanks so much for suggesting it.

Oh dear one, every time I go to my “Favorites” and click on your blog, I close my eyes… I want, I will a new post to be there and when there is, like today, I sit back, smile and drink it in. I’ve never won one of your cups or giveaways, please Vanna have mercy on a lonely elderly gramma – I can’t afford to buy these incredible cups but one day, my time will come… I just know it, I do. Please do all your therapy, look upon your cast time as time to think, to visualize your next project, to relax and to allow that dear man to take care of you.
