HOMEMADE THANKSGIVING MAGIC

We’re talking Homemade Magic today.💖 Do come along, won’t you? MUSICA!

Thought I would talk about the magic of this season . . . We’re all going to be making some this next week (and month)!

We’re cooking up some magic at home and taking it to a friend’s house for Thanksgiving this year! I’m making my heavenly Pumpkin Cheesecake (you can make this gluten free by making one change in the recipe, use gluten-free ginger snaps for the crust, and voila!)I’m also making my Sweet Potato Casserole ⬆️ a wonderful recipe which I sometimes serve in mini pumpkins . . .

But this time I’m just baking it in a casserole dish so it’s easier for travel. (Like my apron? Quite the garment! No mistaking the holiday!)🎃

I’m also providing the cranberry sauce which I almost force them to let me do because I love this simple recipe so much, to me it sparkles ~ plus I’ll make extra for my must-have-for-the-holidays, Christmas Jam. Both recipes are below:I get to jump over it this year, because they are making the turkey!
And we’ll taste someone else’s “idea” of stuffing 😱 but we’ll be brave, it’s good for us, makes us better people. But Joe has gathered the ingredients to add some extra gravy to the general good.

I’m not making Rainbow Jell-O this year because we’ll be all adults (and one new baby!) but if you’re having kids at your table, this is a wonderful recipe for them to put in their forever memory banks. It’s kid food, and they know it and I believe, feel grateful for it. But trust me, big kids like it too!

This was our dinner last year, the leftovers looked almost as good as when we put the dinner on the table! We tried to make enough for every one to have leftovers to-go!

I thought you might like a few photos of Holidays-passed, of some of my decorated table ideas . . .

This was a casual dinner we had at the kitchen table using my old mix-and-match pottery collection, and the antique black-iron candlesticks I found somewhere along the way. (No marks on the bottom of these, I’m sorry to say, would love to tell you where they come from!)

Candlelight makes everything look better! More romantic, prettier colors, softer light, the food even tastes better in candlelight! And a little poem or a prayer written on a menu stand helps to set the tone. Because Thanksgiving is so wonderfully about gratitude and memory.

Cookbooks, wooden spoons, and recipe boxes (with mom and grandma’s handwriting on recipe cards) make evocative Thanksgiving table decorations. I love using stuff I have around the house. A table with lots of little framed photos works too. Makes for lots of happy conversation. Also, you can make placemats out of old photos (enlarge on copier), that’s fun too ~ you can even use them as place cards, “find your photo and that’s where you sit”. (I’ve forgotten to take pictures of my table settings in the past, I try not to let that happen anymore!)

Pile together a few of your favorite things, collections, or family memories, interesting things to look at that relate to you and yours . . . the little shoes, remember from my book? I wrote how I found them in the attic at Holly Oak, left behind by Agnes, my secret guardian angel. Now there she is, on our Thanksgiving table.

More found objects . . . Leaves and pinecones make perfect place cards!

Small low vases of flowers are good too, you can see over them! See the candlestick with the star bobeche? I found those bobeche years ago and LOVE them, I bring them out any time I need a starry night!🕯

I always use them for the holidays, but in the summer too, under the stars . . .

I looked for them for years to put in our web store, but never found them. Off and on, I’ve managed to get people to make them for us, but they’ve been very hard to get. See how you set the bobeche on top of the candle stick?⬆️

And then the candle slips through the hole and into the stick ~ 🕯

Voila! Anyway, I finally found a new manufacturer! And this time I had them made from lightweight acrylic, just like the ones I found so many years ago. In case you need some starry light on your holiday tables!🕯

Bobeche! Here’s how they look without the candles. And, something special, to celebrate this wonderful season . . .For YOU! YES, leave a comment at the end of this post, and we’ll have a drawing, and see who is going to be the winner of this pair of starry bobeche!

I love it when they play Little Women on TV on Thanksgiving. It’s such perfect background “music.” Reminds me of simpler days and the things that really matter. The smell of dinner cooking is enough to set the entire mood of the day. And isn’t it wonderful, it’s not about gifts?! Only the little ones that really count. Like home. And P.S. Something special for PLU (people like us) . . . LOOK what’s coming this Christmas

Because magic can come in very small packages. It doesn’t have to be fancy. All this decorating is nice, if you have the time, and are in the mood, but there are no rules. Just one little pumpkin on a porch or a kitchen table is lovely and festive and says it all. That, a roasted chicken, a baked apple, a little candle, and a prayer is all we need. And the day after Thanksgiving, while filled to overflowing with gratitude and contentment and pumpkin pie, and blessed by everything we have, feed your soul in nature on Green Friday. I fear we are teaching our children greed by celebrating consumerism the day after Thanksgiving. Instead, teach magic, take your spirit and your kids to the sky . . .

Because God made the dirt roads, the woods, and the critters and gave them to us has His gift. And it’s our job to take care of them for Him. Honor them for Him.

Quiet places with wind and bird sounds fill your heart with thanks and wash the stress away. (Would you like to read my Love Letter to Martha’s Vineyard? In your spare time!)

A wonderful gift from the sea, free! And we didn’t have to stand in line under klieg lights to get it!

The pause that refreshes. The sound of snowfall is good for you!The gift that keeps on giving. Other things to do besides hugging trees that cause magic: have a turkey-sandwich, pumpkin-pie picnic outside, or surprise the lady down the street and have your whole family go to her house and plant bulbs. (I’ll give you my address!) Bring someone who’s stuck inside OUT, and take them to nature. Adopt a new petty pet! 💖 Or,

Cuddle in front of a fire . . .

Dreaming of a better tomorrow? Let it show in everything you do.💞 We are so lucky!

Here’s a Thanksgiving Prayer bookmark, for you to print out, just click there. I’ve memorialized the childhood prayer Joe “sang” to me when we first met. (Suzy, Nosey, Inky, and so on, were his family’s pets!❤️)

And don’t forget to leave a comment for the starry bobeches. Blessings on you and yours darling friends! Have the MOST wonderful Thanksgiving.🎃

Happy Thanksgiving Susan! Thank you so much for your uplifting messages and wonderful blog. I love to entertain and appreciate your suggestions which are typically easy and fun. I also have a handsome tuxedo kitty named George, so I also enjoy your kitty pics! Thank you for always being a bright spot in these trying times.

  2. Kathy Branch Spicer says:

Happy Thanksgiving! It’s my very favorite meal. I am convinced I could eat this meal twice a week forever and never tire of turkey, dressing (we never call it stuffing because it is not stuffed in the bird, and it’s bread and giblet and onion and celery and eggs and LOTS of pepper and it’s the very best, made for generations in my mom’s family), cranberries (I’m going to try your baked technique), sweet potatoes, masked potatoes and gravy, and pumpkin pie. Oh I’m happy just TYPING the list.

So, a couple weeks ago I ordered from your web store and it was just the most AMAZING experience. Everything was wrapped up in such beautiful ways and just delightful. The vintage tea towels were going to be a gift, but I love them so much I had to KEEP them. Oh how I loved opening that box of goodies.

With a grateful heart, I wish all the girlfriends here a wonderful holiday.

    Hi Susan,

I love your table settings and the way your home is decorated. I love Autumn too, so my home is nice and cozy as well. We are having friends over for Thanksgiving dinner so it should be a fun time. I’m trying a different recipe for my turkey this year…not the traditional way to fix a turkey, but hopefully it will be good. My husband likes to try different things, so we see if this recipe is a keeper. I posted a comment on your last blog, but for some reason it didn’t go through. I made a comment on how skinny you looked standing in front of Nancy Luce’s grave. You looked absolutely great!!!! It seems your eating healthy has really paid off. Hope you and Joe have a wonderful and blessed Thanksgiving. Thank you for all your blogs….I love reading them.

    • sbranch says:

Well, thank you Sharon! Very sweet of you to say, and thank you for being here too. Happy Thanksgiving, good luck with that turkey!

  23. pat addison (cave junction, OR) says:

Hello Susan, Girlfriends… awww I love this time of year. the wonderful scents of cooking, the peace and quiet and the lovely colors of the leaves, and the scent of wood fires coming from the chimneys. wishing everyone a Happy Thanksgiving and a fun, wonderful Green Friday. I refuse to participate in that barbaric custom of shopping after Thanksgiving, or the new one of shopping on Thanksgiving… BARBARIC!!! nope we have our turkey feast with family and friends, and enjoy the day after by working in the yard and getting settled down for winter. I hear you may be getting snow over Thanksgiving. we may be getting a mix of snow and rain.. hard to say right now. we all have a lot to be grateful for this year.. good health, good harvest from the gardens and 2 kittens training to be full fledged devils. they graduated from gremlins to devils over Halloween when they tried to help with carving the pumpkins… YIPES!!! hopefully they won’t try to help with the turkey, although they keep staring at it and trying to figure out what it is. that and they keep biting my potatoes, I have potatoes with teeth marks in them…. potato vampires. I’m waiting for the day they decide to bite one of the onions… are they ever in for a taste surprise… hehehe!!!! 😀 well off to the henhouse to get any eggs that have laid and keep an eye on that cockeyed hen who keeps on trying to peck at the eggs…. since I figured out who was destroying the eggs and getting to the eggs as fast as I can she has sort slowed down the destruction. hopefully I can get her to stop totally. plus I have to iron the table linen and polish silver. Thanksgiving day comes but once a year and when it does, its full of cheer. Happy Thanksgiving everyone. turkey hugs….. 😀

  24. Gaye Marie says:

Homemade is BEST for sure! Thanks, Susan, for reminding us what is most important. We girlfriends all totally agree with you. The beauty you see in nature around you in MV is so different from what we see here in New Mexico – and I simply LOVE what both have to offer this special time of year. When I look east and see snow on the mountain, I think of you, seeing the ocean. Both grand! Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours!

  25. Diana from Ancaster says:

Wonderful reminder of what is truly important… it’s always the simple things!

  32. Kassy says:

    Hi Susan!
Thank you for this post…..it brought to mind the first time I decorated for fall. I collected colorful leaves and branches, and put them in baskets, and placed some pumpkins on my stove (home grown by my sister-in-law). As you said, it was simple, yet festive, and made me think of loved ones. Now, I cover a table with velvet pumpkins (what else, for a Victorian home?) and acorns; with lots of etceteras, and I still think of loved ones. Your star bobeches are lovely; I’ve always admired them in past photos of your home (would love to win them). I found some small star shaped beads and made earrings with them. I have stars in my ears and eyes on these crisp November days.
Good health and happiness to you and yours!

  33. Nancy in Oregon says:

Hi Susan! Thanks so much for all the holiday blessings you bring to the party. Recently I found some old Christmas-time editions of Mary Engelbreit’s Home Companion magazine, and enjoyed some nostalgic browsing. Were you influenced by Mary? You are certainly birds of a feather, in the best possible way! Cheers to you and yours and fervent hopes for a Thanksgiving filled with grace and joy.

  39. Ann Williams says:

Your blog brings back so many happy Thanksgiving memories. In my eighties now so can’t do what I used to do, but coming from a family of 8 sisters there are so many wonderful Thanksgiving get-togethers to look back on. This year my granddaughter is hosting, so the tradition carries on, Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family.

  40. Eileen says:

I love reading everything you write about Marthas Vinyard, your home and the season you are writing about. I have only been to the Vinyard in the summer because it is a cooler climate than the summer heat in the south. Every time I read your newsletters about fall, winter, and spring on the island, I would like to experience that time of the year there also.

  41. Janet Freeman says:

I love your table decorating ideas! Thanks & happy Thanksgiving.

  42. Beth Wilson says:

Forgot to say, just ordered the pair of bobeches, can’t wait to use them!

  43. Judy says:

    Cranberries are in the oven.
I like the idea of making Jam for Christmas gifts.
    Thank you for the recipe.

  44. jeanie says:

Oh, isn’t this the perfect post! All the recipes and lovely photos of Thanksgivings past and the beautiful things in your world. Of course, I’ll read your love letter to the Vineyard. And sight unseen, I know I couldn’t agree more. Here in Michigan we will celebrate the first Thanksgiving with friends and the second with family and oh, both will be wonderful. Then perhaps time to clear the fall and get ready for the holly jolly times! Loveliest wishes to you. I am so thankful that you are generous and warm with sharing not only your talent (and kitchen!) but also your spirit and joy for life. And, for the Brandenburg Concerto! Oh, I love my Bach!

Thanks for your post today. It was a comfort and reminded me to be thankful and to look for an appreciate the beauty that is still in the world. Hi Susan,
I love calling it Green Friday!! Excellent recomendation.
    Thank you,
    Susan (In snowy (today) Colorado)

  51. Cindy Benard says:

    Dear Susan,

Your newsletters are like a happy tonic…and a precious reminder that we can hold onto all the good things we want to…we can enjoy a simple, sweet and happy life if we chose to…I love the idea of taking children on a nature excursion after Thanskgiving instead of shopping! I, too, think we are teaching the wrong perspective when on Thanksgivinig we give thanks for all we have and the next day set out in hordes to shop, often losing our very humanity for the sake of a ‘bargain’. I have not shopped the day after Thanksgiving for decades now and I have never missed it for a second.
Thank you for sharing your lovely music, your life and stories, your home, your adventures and your art…I’ve been a fan for a very long time and want you to know what you do feels fresh and special as the first time I discovered you all those many years ago!!
    Many happy blessings this Thanksgiving!

Hope you and Joe have a very Happy Thanksgiving! Everything looks beautiful and sounds delicious. Yours truly, Julie

  57. dianne says:

i get to bake a coffee cake for Thanksgiving morning – and smell its deliciousness whilst watching for Santa to make his appearance at the end of the parade – it’s gonna be an awesome day … but i am gonna skip the recipe for White Castle stuffing that was printed in Sunday’s paper – bleck – ha ha ha!!!

Blessed Thanksgiving to you and yours.

    • sbranch says:

SO much has to do with our family traditions and which parts of the country we’re from. Although I was born and raised in California, my mom and Grandma grew up in Iowa, and some of their recipes are recognizable to our Iowa girlfriends! Love the sharing of traditions. xoxo

  62. Louise Weber says:

Hello Sue – I’m still following your excellent adventures from afar – as I did more than 25 years ago ! when we explored possible video opportunities… do you remember? Hi Susan,
For once, I am actually going to comment Right after I’ve read your post. This is a special treat today, lovely to read and look at and a welcome respite from the daily world out there.
I love bobeches and have a small box of eight plain glass ones which were my mother’s;I had no idea they could be so fancy! These star ones would look so beautiful on my mantel at Christmas with my “glitter village”.
Happy Thanksgiving to you and Joe and thanks for sharing yourself with us.

  70. Terri McGreer says:

Happy Thanksgiving 🍁 I’ll be cooking dimmer this year for my small family. In the past few years I have lightened the load of carbs and make fewer side dishes. But the family recipe for our cranberry relish is still a must have. I still polish the silver and use candles on the table. So to win those pretty bobeche would make my table be extra beautiful! Blessings to you and Joe and thanks for all of your inspiration.

  71. Jane Fideler says:

    Happy Thanksgiving!🦃🍁🌾

  74. Ginnie Judd says:

Love this post (but come to think of it, is there ever one I don’t love? No. Love them all). The rainbow Jello recipe is the reason I know you: my cousin from MA who moved to IL for a few years made it for a family gathering back in the day, and when we all exclaimed over it, brought out your cookbook, which we also exclaimed over! I was hooked. My darling cousin Jean died unexpectedly nearly two years ago; I still miss her but am so thankful for her presence in my life – and for introducing us to Susan Branch.

  75. Linda Lepage says:

Susan!!! This is my favorite time of the year; Thanksgiving!!!! Such a blessing. Oh! Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE CHRISTMAS, but it’s gotten so dang commercial, that it just get’s to be too much. I like a simple Christmastide. My family and I try to keep it as simple as we can, and make sure we are all together.
Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours! ( love your table settings)

  76. Rosemary, 9 miles North of Boston says:

Happy Thanksgiving Susan and Joe! This year our two boys–one with his wife, the other with his fiancé, and our youngest daughter will be with us next week, just missing our oldest, who’s out on the West Coast with her significant other. So while we’ll miss Emily and Phil, we’ll have a happy Turkey Day. Son Alex and fiancé Jenn will be in the kitchen, Will and wife Nina may bring something, young Irina will put the music together, and I may be relegated to sous-chef-overseer, and will be happy just to have them all at my table. I’m going to pour through your Autumn book for recipes to suggest, but will let the Master Cooks make all decisions. Will set a festive table and then sit back and thank the Good Lord that I can enjoy my family this year. So, have the best of days, Sue and Joe, and I’ll look for your next post–always, Always love them!
Bless you, and all of us!
    Rosemary

  77. Cathy MacNeil says:

A very Happy Thanksgiving and a Merry Christmas to you both. I so enjoy your wonderful blogs and all the creative art work. So impressive!

  81. This new version of Little Women was partially filmed in my hometown of Harvard, MA. The Congregational Church, which one of my ancestors helped found is in one scene. I can’t wait to see it. I have a couple of photos of the set they created in the center of town if you’d like to see!

  82. Katherine from the Canaan Valley in West Virginia says:

Happy Thanksgiving, Susan, to you and all your loved ones. Thank you for sharing your thoughts and ideas with us. You are a very special favorite of mine. Much of what you write reminds me of the writings of Gladys Taber, who I know you also admired. Your postings add joy to my days. I have several sets of bobeches for our dining room table. Would love to win a set of your starry ones.

I crave your New England pictures and this month you did not disappoint -cardinal on the ground, hugging giant trees, water, leafless path, and even a beach. Living on the plains of southeast Colorado I so appreciate these mini vacations reading your blog! Happy Thanksgiving🍂🍁

Love your Thanksgiving letter! You always bring our minds back to simpler things, good food, good friends, our little treasures we all collect! And my ❤️ is praying to win those starry bobeches*** My glass candle sticks are waiting to be dressed for Christmas!! I would treasure them ALWAYS🕯🕯
Have a perfectly wonderful Thanksgiving feast!

Thank you for another lovely cheering post – food for the eyes, ears and soul. My hat is off to all you women who have Thanksgiving right before Christmas. I don’t know how you manage it. We here in Canada get a nice long break between our Thanksgiving in October and Christmas, time enough to look forward to another turkey dinner. The starry-night candles are divine! Blessings to you and Joe.

You were right to keep them separate! Time used to go slower so they weren’t as close together as they are now! xoxoxo

Magic is such a delightful surprise. I love that it can be quiet like hugging a tree or grand like seeing your soulmate within seconds of eyes meeting. Thank you for reminding me of all the shades of magic available to me everyday! You are a blessing in my life with your music, words, and watercolors. Have a magical Thanksgiving!

    Susan,
Once again you are here to inspire, just in the nick of time. I am getting ready to bind a red and white wall
hanging quilt. So excited. My quilt bee is coming right after Thanksgiving, for our Christmas party. Thanksgiving at my oldest son’s home so am beginning to decorate early-shhhhh, please do not scold. I love Thanksgiving, and have turkey plates-two kinds and tureens to go with, so yes, I love Thanksgiving and all that goes with it.
Starry bobeches, I am excited, I always wanted some, and never ordered the others and then poof they were gone. She who waits, gets disappointed sometimes.
Thank you bunny bunches. Happy Thanksgiving, it sounds like you are going to have a new food adventure. Have fun. I know you will.
    Shirley

Thank you for this beautiful message. Thanksgiving has always been my favorite holiday – no pressure, no presents- just good food and good company. Since our family has gotten smaller and I’ve been working, our celebration has changed. But we still cherish what we’re sharing and all the love we still feel. Much love to you and yours and have a wonderful Thanksgiving.

Greetings from Arizona. This is the time of year I miss being “back East”. Colder days with leaves swirling around and the hint of snow in the air. Happy Thanksgiving, time to make the Corn Pudding!!

  96. Kitty Muse says:

This blog was endearing and showed what a wonderful and warm time Thanksgiving can be. I thank you for that!!! Our family, however, throws into this mix a bit of rivalry that comes with a good football game or two…

Happy Thanksgiving Susan. I want to let you know that you’ve inspired part of my Thanksgiving table. I make the “Ginger Crisps” with a beautiful leaf cookie cutter. Then with royal icing, I put my guests names and use them as place cards.
So cute! Thanks for all of the cozy, fall inspiration, my favorite time of year.
ps. Thanks to Kellee and Sheri and the rest of your elves. It’s always a treat to get a package from them!

    Susan,
